Planning a Trip to Hawaii: The Ultimate Guide

Planning a trip to Hawaii doesn't have to be stressful - it can be great fun! Follow those simple steps to experience a once-in-a-lifetime holiday in the Aloha State.

  1. Know the Best Time to Go to a Hawaii Vacation

planning a trip to Hawaii helicopter tours

The best things about Hawaii are its balmy weather year-round, the abundance of outdoor activities, and, of course, the white sand beaches. Each island (there are 4 main islands) has a distinct evolution history with different atomic terrain, which results in varying environmental conditions.  This is why there is no such thing as "the best time to go to Hawaii" but rather when you should go to each Hawaiian island instead.   Here's a guide that explains when you can expect sunny skies and lush greenery on Oahu , Maui , Kauai , and the Big Island !

Where: Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean halfway between North America and Asia. It is made up of 92% mountainous volcanic surface with a few sandy beaches on its perimeter. When to go: Winter for surfing, summer for swimming and snorkeling Weather: Oahu is the most populated island in Hawaii with a tropical climate characterized by mild temperatures throughout the year. The average temperature hovers around 80°F (26°C), while humidity levels are generally high. Despite this, it rarely rains on Oahu, which averages only 50 days of rainfall per year! It's best to begin your trip during the winter months when there are more chances of sunny skies and warm ocean waters ideal for surfing or playing in the sand. During summertime, trade some warmth for cool Hawaiian breezes while exploring natural wonders on land or under sea level.

planning a trip to Hawaii Black sand beach located on the road to hana on Maui

Where: In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, about 30 miles northwest of Oahu  When to go: Winter for whale watching and summer for swimming Weather: The climate is a cross between a tropical rainforest and a semi-arid desert. It's rainy most days, but it still only rains an average of 66 inches per year! When you go to Maui, expect temperatures around 78°F (26°C) with high humidity throughout the year. Fortunately, there are very few days when it rains in Maui despite its reputation as a "rainy" island. In fact, this popular tourist destination averages only 24 days of rainfall every month. Visitors will be able to spend most of their time outside enjoying all of the island's outdoor activities!

Where: The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest island in the United States. It's made up of four separate shield volcanoes named Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, and Kilauea. When to go: Winter for sunny days and summer for whale watching Weather: This part of Hawaii has a tropical climate that features warm temperatures throughout the year with dry periods when trade winds are active. Temperatures range from 60°F during winter months when should expect more rainfall to 80-85°F during summertime when rainfall is scarce. It's much dryer on the Kona side of the island and wet on the Hilo side of the island. The Big Island averages over 60 inches of precipitation every year so expect wet conditions especially on the north and east coasts where rainfall can reach up to 200 inches per year!

Kauai

Where: This island is located on the western edge of Hawaii and features a mostly mountainous landscape. It takes up 552 square miles (1,456 square km), which makes it the fourth largest Hawaiian island. It is also the oldest of the main islands. When to go: Winter for dramatic views and summer for hiking in Waimea Canyon State Park or Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge Weather: The climate of Kauai changes depending on where you are on the island and what time of year you visit. There is no "dry" season but rather dry areas such as Poipu and Kaumakani while other regions get more rainfall throughout the year. The weather is mostly affected by trade winds, but it's also impacted by the mountains that surround most of the island and how much rainfall they receive throughout a specific period.  The northern part of Kauai, where the famous Na Pali coast is located, sees more rainfall from November to April with average temperatures around 77°F (25°C). The western side of the island, which is exposed to high humidity levels, sees less rainfall from May to September with average temperatures around 80-81°F (27-28°C). In Kauai, we recommend visiting the southern and eastern parts of this charming Hawaiian island during summertime for hiking and exploring nature trails filled with beautiful tropical flowers!

Note: Avoid Golden Week

Golden Week is a time where people in Japan have four-holiday breaks without work. Hawaii has hundreds of Japanese tourists. Avoid Golden Week because it will be difficult to find hotel rooms and beaches, which will be crowded. You also probably won't be able to do all the tours or attractions you want. The price of hotel rooms seems to rocket during summer vacations in Hawaii, so don't come to Oahu this week. Golden Week is scheduled to last from the end of April to the beginning of May.

2. Pick the Best Accommodation in the Hawaiian Islands Source

planning a trip to Hawaii ocean view

As a vacation rental and self-catering accommodation, Airbnb has opened up a whole new world of accommodation possibilities, and you may be able to sleep in unique rooms from treehouses to cottages and even RV parks in Hawaii. You can also cut back on some expenses since you can make your own meals. However, you'll generally find places listed here are slightly more expensive than traditional hotel stays. Also, with recent laws put in place, the number of these rentals has gone way down.   If you're traveling solo or don't mind sharing a room with strangers, hostels are the cheapest way to go. They are also great fun and can sometimes be even better than staying in a hotel as you get to meet lots of other like-minded travelers who are often keen for company on upcoming adventures!   Don’t have a lot of cash? For your Hawaii vacation, consider using sites such as Couchsurfing or go for house sitting in websites such as Mind a Home or Trusted House Sitters. Keep in mind that while you can get a good deal since it's free accommodation, you will still have to spend on other things like food. Couchsurfing may not be the most comfortable way to sleep either when you’re in the islands.

3. Plan How to Travel into and Around the Islands

planning a trip to Hawaii car rentals

Unless you travel on a cruise, the only way to reach Hawaii is through air travel. However, flying is an expensive business, especially to an out-of-the-way destination like Hawaii, even if there are many international carriers and domestic planes that come here. If you want to save money, here are some tips on how to fly to Hawaii on a budget:   Book Off-Season Direct Flights for Your Hawaii Vacation

Booking flights at times when there is less demand will result in lower fares. In Hawaii, the peak season runs from December to April. You can compare flight prices between the low and high seasons for this purpose. The cheapest days of the week to travel vary depending on where you're flying from and where you're flying to, so do your research before buying tickets. Also, bear in mind that weekends could be more expensive than weekdays since many people tend to fly during this time. The same goes for public holidays.

Choose a Flexible Ticket if Possible

Flexible tickets always come with an added cost, but they also allow you to customize your travel plans and can save you quite a bit of money in certain cases.  For example, if you happen to know when and where you want to fly beforehand and there happens to be a cheap flight departing at exactly those times and places, no problem! However, if you’re not completely sure about your travel plans, it doesn’t make sense to get a ticket that is not flexible.  In looking at this, the additional cost is almost never worth it, with one exception. Southwest Airlines has a flexible ticket by default. We are not affiliated with Southwest, but they are one of our favorite airlines because of this feature. Because of Southwest, we have left this tip on our list.

Fly during Weekdays to Get the Cheapest Fare

planning a trip to Hawaii Hawaiian Airlines

Use Loyalty Programs

Many airlines like Southwest have created their loyalty programs to reward regular travelers with free or discounted flights and other perks. The more you fly with an airline, the more benefits you'll receive from them - without having to pay an additional fee! Some credit cards also offer similar services where you earn points every time you make purchases using these cards, which can be redeemed for flights. Some airlines also offer a special called "Saver Fares," which is a last-minute sale on seats that are normally refundable. Most arrivals should be to Honolulu International Airport, while other airports include Kahului Airport on Maui and Lihue Airport on Kauai Island. You can also take inter island flights, but you have only two options: Hawaiian Airlines and Mokulele.

Rental Cars in Hawaii

Family relaxing during road trip

Car rentals during your Hawaii trip are usually more affordable than buying or leasing your vehicle. The availability of public transportation is limited, but there are several choices when it comes to renting a car in the state. You can either rent at the airport or book online for efficient travel .

You can also roam around by booking a vehicle through Uber and Lyft. But if you want to support the state’s economy, use the Turo app . It is a peer-to-peer car rental service that involves owners renting out their cars. It can provide cars and even other vehicles like RVs for as little as $100. However, make sure to check the condition of the vehicle before arrival, during the reservation period, and soon after you begin using it. It might be worth comparing rental rates elsewhere first.

Rental Car Rules and Tips in Hawaii

planning a trip to Hawaii rental car road trip

When planning a trip to Hawaii, learn both spoken and unspoken rental car rules and driving in the  islands:

  • When reserving a car in Hawaii, make sure that you understand all local traffic rules about when children must be seated in the proper child seat. Car hire companies usually offer assistance with instructions on where to find these seats in each vehicle before departure
  • Driving in Hawaii poses some challenges because of all the street signs written in Hawaiian. Although they are not too hard to figure out, you have to drive on the right side of the road just like in mainland America.
  • Drivers should take note that most streets are curvy and windy with narrow roads that only accommodate one-way traffic.
  • Road conditions vary. Some roads are paved while others are still dirt paths, which make driving hazardous during bad weather or when visibility is low.
  • If you plan to rent a car in Hawaii, especially for rough road traveling, it would be best to have a four-wheel-drive vehicle. This makes it easier to maneuver through rough terrain if ever an emergency occurs. Renting four-wheel-drive vehicles is also good for places with steep roads where horrendous landslides are common during the rainy season.
  • Four-wheel drives can also cross shallow rivers so they are ideal for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who might wish to camp in remote areas away from traffic and civilization. You can also opt to use two-wheel drives but this will limit your itinerary selection because of the place's rugged nature, which only four-wheel drives can handle.
  • Those under age 25 may incur additional charges headed by surcharges for young drivers while car seats required for infants are also subject to extra charges. You can bring your own child seat or rent one from the company where you acquired your car rental package deal free of charge.

4. Plan Your Hawaii Trip Activities

planning a trip to Hawaii hiking trails

Hawaii has a lot of great things to do from the lush tropical jungle to the beautiful beaches. There's never a shortage of fun things you can do in this amazing place. Read on for some of our favorite things that you can do when you visit Hawaii:

Arts and Culture   What better way is there to experience culture during your Hawaii vacation than by visiting local arts and cultural institutions? Hawaii is home to many museums, theaters, concert halls, festivals, and more. You will have no problem finding an activity that suits your interests here! Here are some examples:

  • The Bishop Museum: We're not talking about just any museum. This is THE natural history museum in all of Hawaii! The Bishop Museum has been open since 1889 and today boasts more than 24 million artifacts, treasures, and specimens. Need we say more?
  •   The Royal Hawaiian Center: Shopping is a favorite pastime for many people, so why not visit a shopping center that's themed after the royal family of Hawai'i? The Royal Hawaiian Center has been around since 1977 and hosts some truly upscale shops.
  • Hawaii Theatre: There are few things as classic as watching a show at an old-fashioned theater! The Hawaii Theatre has been hosting shows since 1922 and is just as popular today as it was back then. Music, drama, and dance performances make this theater truly unique!

Water Activities in Hawaii Island

planning a trip to Hawaii best beaches surfing

What do you think of when you think of the Hawaiian islands? You probably think about beautiful beaches along with fun water activities like surfing or snorkeling. This is definitely the best side of Hawaii! Here are some activities you can try in the water:

  • Menehune Ditch: Get out your inner explorer when you visit this unique spot. Menehune Ditch is a series of stone walls that run for 23 miles all along the Waimea River. No one knows who made these walls or how old they are, but they make for an interesting sight to see!
  •   La'ie Point: La'ie Point is a great place to snorkel if you don't have time to go out on a tour or if you don't want to rent equipment. A reef just offshore means that the water is calm and clear, perfect for novice snorkelers!
  •   Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve: If you're a beginner surfer or just looking to learn during your trip to Hawaii, Hanauma Bay is a great spot. The waves here are small and rolling, so it's ideal for quiet surfing lessons. It's also one of the best spots in all of Hawaii for learning how to surf.
  •   Lanikai: If you want to catch some rays in total privacy, book a spot at the many resorts along Lanikai Beach. This beach has powder-soft sand and beautifully clear water just steps from the shore, so it's perfect for lounging all day long.
  •   Surfing: Surfing was born in Hawaii and if you don't mind getting your feet wet, it's fun to learn how to do it while you're here! Classes are commonly offered at many beaches on Oahu, including the famous Waikiki Beach. You'll be standing up and riding waves in no time!
  •   Snorkeling: Snorkeling is a must-try activity while you're on Oahu, Poipu Beach, Waikiki Beach, and the black sand beach of Awahua Beach in Molokai. Many tour companies offer excursions where you travel to different snorkeling locations and scuba dive for a small fee. You can even book a private tour if you want to explore the waters at your pace. Experienced swimmers can also rent masks and fins from many tour companies to explore the nearby reefs on their terms.

On days when you just want to do nothing, then just relax. Sometimes it's nice not to have any scheduled activities at all. Besides the beaches like Poipu Beach, there are also several spa treatments throughout the islands where you can relax in luxury.

We can't leave out Oahu's nightlife! Honolulu is undoubtedly one of the best cities in the world when it comes to having fun at night. There are plenty of clubs for dancing and drinking as well as theater and music performances if you're looking for something more laid back. When it comes to clubbing, the North Shore is home to many popular bars and clubs with their own unique style and atmosphere. If you're looking to dance, head to Haleiwa Joe's. If you want to catch some live music, try the Pipeline Bakeshop and Creamery.

5. Enjoy the Food during Your Hawaiian Vacation

One of the important Hawaii travel tips is to try their food. Food is so important in Hawaii that they have their own cuisine: Hawaiian. The most popular dish in Hawaii would probably be Spam musubi. Spam musubi is basically spam sushi. It's simply rice topped with Spam. Different variations of this dish include using different types of meat instead of Spam usually teriyaki beef or grilled chicken. Another famous dish on your trip to Hawaii is loco moco.  Loco moco consists of white rice topped with a hamburger patty with brown gravy and a fried egg. Other popular dishes are things like chicken katsu (fried chicken), milkfish or "mahi mahi" (dolphin fish), and saimin. It’s a noodle soup consisting of eggs, green onions, sliced pork, barbecued pork, and chunks of ham. Some of these are already available in local food trucks. Meanwhile, a plate lunch is a popular dish found in Hawaii. It's served in restaurants and poi stands. You can also make it at home (if you’re staying in an Airbnb) to take out from the supermarket or get from a drive-thru window. The most common ingredients in a plate lunch are white rice, macaroni salad, and some sort of meat that's been cooked in soy sauce or teriyaki style. Traditionally, you would eat this meal with your bare hands.

Fruits and Coffee in Hawaii

planning a trip to Hawaii food tours harvesting

Hawaii is the only state in the United States that grows coffee commercially. In fact, coffee is one of Hawaii's biggest exports now. It would be pretty accurate to say that Hawaiians love their coffee!

Coffee has always been readily available in restaurants and hotels for visitors who want it 24/7, but now local Hawaiian chains have opened up where locals can get their coffee fix. While some locals say that these chains don't compare to Starbucks, some people like it because it's more local and less expensive than going to Starbucks every day.

Part of what makes "local" food special is that there isn't much locally grown produce in Hawaii. Since they're surrounded by water, most of their produce has to be imported from another island or country. Because of this, almost all fruit in Hawaii is imported!   It can get pretty pricey depending on the season, though, and since tropical fruit has a short shelf life, it's usually very fresh. The most popular fruit in Hawaiian cuisine is the pineapple. Other fruits like bananas, mangoes, and guavas are also frequently found in dishes.

As you can see, planning a trip to Hawaii doesn't have to be stressful. Follow these simple steps to make sure you’ll have a grand time in the Aloha State!

If you still feel overwhelmed by all of this information and Hawaiian culture, don’t worry! Hawaiian Planner has got your back with their detailed vacation planner that will take care of everything from flights and hotels to activities and excursions.

Tips for Planning Your Hawaii Vacation

Pick the right time to visit:.

Hawaii, a tropical paradise, is a dream destination for many. Our Hawaii Trip Planner will help us to help you! Traveling to this beautiful archipelago can be expensive, especially during peak seasons. If you are looking for a budget-friendly option, the least expensive times to visit Hawaii are after Easter break until mid-June and from September through the middle of December. During these periods, the crowd is thinner, and the prices for accommodation and activities are generally lower. When we receive the information from this Hawaii Trip Planner, we’ll start looking for the best bundle deals, and if you are flexible with your dates, we can do even more research!! All this is FREE; we do not charge for our quotes! When is the best time to visit? It’s worth considering traveling mid-week. Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday usually offer the lowest airfares. Most people prefer to travel on weekends, causing a surge in demand and, consequently, higher prices. You can significantly reduce your travel costs by choosing to fly on one of these mid-week days. Also, don’t forget to compare airline flight prices; some may offer better deals than others. Remember that direct flights may be more expensive than those with layovers, so you could save money if you are willing to spend more time in transit. Consider traveling mid-week. Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday usually gives you the lowest airfares.

Bundle and Save!!

Taking advantage of bundled deals in our all-inclusive packages is another excellent way to save on your trip to Hawaii. Many travel companies and agencies, including ours, receive discounted rates from vendors for flights, hotels, meals, and activities. We then pass these savings on to you. The more you book with us, the more you save! This means that you can secure a much better rate by booking your airfare, hotel, meals, and activities simultaneously than booking each component separately. Our bundle packages are designed to take the stress out of planning and to provide you with the best value for your money. We can include everything you need for your trip, from when you step onto the plane until you return home. Not only does this make the planning process much easier, but it also ensures that you won’t encounter any unexpected costs during your trip. For example, a ‘Bundle’ could include round-trip airfare, a seven-night stay at a beachfront hotel, daily meals, and activities such as a luau, snorkeling, and a guided volcano tour. By booking these components together, you could save hundreds of dollars compared to booking them separately. Moreover, we work with a wide range of vendors, so we can customize your bundle to suit your preferences and budget. Whether you prefer a luxurious resort or a budget-friendly hotel, fine dining or casual eateries, adrenaline-pumping activities, or relaxing beach days, we can tailor your package to meet your needs. In summary, bundling your travel components can lead to significant savings. We offer a range of bundle packages that can be customized to suit your preferences and budget. You can save money and simplify the planning process by booking your airfare, hotel, meals, and activities simultaneously. Remember, the more you book, the more you save! So why not let us take care of everything for you so you can relax and look forward to your trip to Hawaii?

Pick the right accommodations.

Certainly, the type of accommodation you choose will significantly impact your trip’s overall cost. In Hawaii, as in many popular tourist destinations, accommodations are available in various price categories, from budget to luxury. Budget accommodations may include hostels, budget hotels, or vacation rentals. These options typically offer basic amenities and may be farther from popular attractions or beaches. However, they are a great option for travelers on a tight budget. Moderate accommodations may include mid-range hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals. These options often balance cost and comfort, with more amenities and better locations than budget accommodations. Luxury accommodations may include high-end hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals. These options usually offer the best locations, top-notch amenities, and exceptional service. However, they also come with a higher price tag. Another big factor in determining the price of your accommodation is the room category you choose. Hotels and resorts often offer a range of room categories, from city-view rooms to oceanfront suites.

  • City View: These rooms usually have the lowest rate as they do not offer a view of the ocean. However, they are a great option for travelers who plan to spend most of their time outside the room and are looking to save on accommodation costs.
  • Partial Ocean View: These rooms may offer a glimpse of the ocean, but it may not be a full, unobstructed view. They are usually priced higher than city-view rooms but are still more affordable than ocean-view or oceanfront rooms.
  • Ocean View: These rooms offer a clear view of the ocean, but they may be located farther back from the beach or on a lower floor. They are usually priced higher than partial ocean-view rooms.
  • Oceanfront: These rooms are located closest to the beach and offer the best views. They are usually the most expensive room category.

When choosing your accommodation, it’s important to consider what is most important to you. A city-view room may be sufficient if you plan to spend most of your time at the beach or exploring the island. However, if you plan to spend a lot of time at the hotel and want to enjoy the view from your room, it may be worth splurging on an ocean view or oceanfront room. Additionally, consider the hotel or resort’s amenities, as this can also impact your overall experience.

In summary, bundling your travel components can lead to significant savings. Check out this podcast to learn more about basic planning for your Hawaii vacation.

The Ultimate 7 Day Maui Itinerary | Plan the Perfect Maui Vacation

Planning a trip to Maui, Hawaii and looking for a solid Maui 7 day itinerary …!? Well, look no further, because I’ve put together the ultimate guide to a Maui trip. You’ll find the best things to do, where to stay, food recommendations, the best day trips, and so much more!

With its scenic coastal roads, dozens of beautiful beaches, wondrous luxury resorts, gorgeous national parks, and pristine marine biodiversity – there truly is a little something for everybody on the island!

I just recently returned from an amazing weeklong stay, and it really was an unbelievable vacation that I’ll never forget. I’m completely hooked on Hawaii travel now, and can’t wait to return to paradise in the near future!

While it may be difficult at first to decide which island to visit in Hawaii, I’d say you’ll be more than happy with your decision to make it down to Maui! It’s a paradise for sun-seekers, road trippers, aquatic lovers, food fanatics, and lots of family fun. I’m sure you’ll find this “7 days in Maui itinerary” helpful. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you’ve got!

Maui Itinerary

The Best Time to Plan a Trip to Maui

One of the best parts about a Hawaii vacation is that you can pretty much go any time of the year! For Maui weather, you can simply expect the beautifully warm tropical climate, and it’s pretty consistent all year long with daytime highs around 75-85°F (23-29°C). Bear in mind that Maui does receive a lot of rainfall especially during the winter months of December, January and February. This can bring some cloudy days and heavy showers in certain areas…

“Rain showers are typically short and are quickly followed by more sunshine, and, if you’re lucky, rainbows. Rainbows are always said to be a sign of good luck in the islands, meaning you’ll return one day if you spot one.” – Hawaii Travel Guide

Do you need a Rental Car in Maui?

To get the full Maui experience, you’ll 100% want to rent your own vehicle! I found the rates to be surprisingly affordable for Hawaii (I was expecting much worse), and it’ll provide for a lot more freedom. Besides, if you add up the costs of taxis and shuttle costs to the island’s main highlights, it’ll honestly be more than the entire car rental fee.

While gas prices on the island are expensive (it’s an island in the pacific ocean after all), it’s such an amazing feeling to drive along around these gorgeous highways at your own pace. Maui is the second biggest island in Hawaii, so there’s definitely a lot to explore, and some fun roads to drive along!

While it can be easy to just sit back and chill at the resort pool the entire trip (which I’ll admit I did quite a bit during my recent Maui vacation), I’d strongly recommend getting out and exploring everything the island has to offer!

Where To Stay on Maui Island

There really are dozens of incredible accommodation options to choose from on Maui Island, and it really just depends on where you want to be located, the price you’re willing to spend, and what you want to be close to.

I’d personally recommend staying on the west coast of Maui , which consists of the major hotel/ resort hubs of Kapalua , Kaanapali , and Lahaina. This is easily the most scenic region on the island and is packed with tons of pristine beaches, coves, restaurants, and resorts. While it’s about a forty-minute drive from the airport, it’s the most lively and beautiful area and should be included in any Hawaii trip planner!

There are a lot of different resorts and condos down from Kihei all the way down to Wailea, but I wasn’t impressed by the beaches that much. While they are a bit more centrally located, I’d definitely recommend staying up in Kapalua or in the Lahaina area.  While you’ll need to do some research and find the best place for you, here are a couple of solid options that would provide for comfortable and enjoyable stays!

My main recommendation for accommodation in Maui is by booking a VRBO, as there are tons of incredible options available and can be more affordable than the expensive hotels. Here are are a few of my personal favorites:

  • Luxury OCEAN FRONT Condo Truly 5 Star
  • Stunning Views From Only Double Lanai Penthouse Unit
  • Direct Beachfront Spectacular Ocean Views Newly Renovated!!

Ritz Carlton Kapalua: The Best Luxury Resort

During our most recent trip to Maui, we stayed at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua for five nights on Maui, and it was absolutely spectacular! Staying at the Ritz really turned our trip to Maui into an “ultimate vacation” experience, and I was blown away by everything the resort has to offer.

From its unbeatable customer service (seriously, all the staff are super friendly), luxuriously comfortable rooms, an award-winning full-service spa, relaxing multi-tiered pool, fantastic dining options, beach access, helpful concierge desk, and lots more – it’s essentially got everything you look for in a 5* Resort in paradise!

While it may be one of the more expensive options in the area, the Ritz Carlton will provide an unforgettable stay for your Maui vacation, and is absolutely worth every penny!

Napili Sunset Beach Front Resort: Best Budget Resort

If you’re looking for a more affordable option in the area, then book yourself into one of the beautiful apartments at the Napili Sunset Beach Front Resort .

The units are clean and kitted out with everything you may need. Fully equipped kitchens, free wi-fi, an outdoor pool, and quick access to some of the best sandy beaches in the Kapalua area – this place would be a fantastic budget option!

You are just a few steps away from the Napili Bay beach, you can’t find a better location at a better price. Enjoy long days on the beach or get active with the water sports and snorkeling activities offered by the hotel.

The service is exceptional and it’s a top-pick for Maui,  also rated for the best value in Lahaina, so ideal for couples, families & solo travelers who are looking to save a bit of money!

Maui Vacation Planner & Travel Accommodation Tips

One important thing to note about staying on the west side of Maui is that it is a considerable distance away from the starting point from the Road To Hana (one of the island’s major tourist attractions).

Some people recommend to split up the entire journey into two days and actually stay out there at the Travaasa Hana Resort (which you’ll want to book well in advance as it sells out frequently). While it’s definitely possible to do the Road to Hana in one day, it’ll be a LONG day on the windy roads if you do the self-drive option, and it’s just something to keep in mind.

Depending on how long you have on Maui, it could be nice to break up where you stay. For example, if you’re following this 7-day Maui itinerary, you could choose to do 4 Days in Maui in one area, and 3 days in another.

But without further ado, let’s get started…

Best Places to Stay - Maui Itinerary

Maui Itinerary Day 1: Helicopter Views & Iao Valley State Park

There really is no better way to start your Maui vacation than getting a bird’s eye view of the island. Prepare yourself for a magical experience as you soar over this pristine and unspoiled Hawaiin landscape on a helicopter tour!

Scenic Helicopter Tour - Maui Itinerary

It was one of the highlights of my trip, and I loved how it’ll give you a much better understanding of the sheer size of the island, all the different areas there are to explore, and a full appreciation for the rugged coastlines.

Several different companies offer scenic helicopter tours and lots of different routes. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with Maverick Helicopters, and doing the Molokai Voyage tour!

I loved flying over TWO islands, and the waterfalls along the tall coastlines of Molokai were incredible to see in person! As well, you’ll get to fly over the resorts on the west coast of Maui, and fly across the channel which I really enjoyed.

Two Island Hawaii Helicopter Experience Over Maui and Molokai : “This Hawaiian helicopter tour lets you explore the beauty and scenery of two Hawaiian Islands on this multi-island expedition. Begin your adventure departing the Kahului Heliport on your way to the world’s largest sea cliffs, located on Molokai, also known as the Friendly Isle.

Molokai’s waterfalls, including Kahiwa Falls are the tallest among all the Hawaiian Islands . Get bird’s-eye views of the remote north shore, Halawa Valley and the vast Molokai fish ponds.  Fly over the Pailolo channel featuring some of the most scenic waters between the islands including Elephant Rock.

Over Maui, get intimate views of the western portion of the island including the famous lao Valley State Park, a vegetation-covered lava rainforest.”

Helicopter Flight - Maui Itinerary

Iao Valley State Park

Once you’ve landed back on the ground, it’s only a short drive from the airport to the Iao Valley State Park ! You will have just flown over this stunning green landscape, and now it’s your chance to walk (and swim) through it!

With a short scenic lookout trail, several swimming holes, and being surrounded by tropical gardens – it’s the perfect place to spend a couple of hours escaping from the Maui heat!

It’s also home to one of Maui’s most recognizable landmarks, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle. “This iconic green-mantled rock outcropping overlooks Iao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.”

After taking a dip in the streams, and learning all about the historical significance, head back to your resort for the rest of the day, as you’ll probably be ready for some rest if you’re experiencing any jet lag!

Iao Valley State Park Maui

Maui Itinerary Day 2: Haleakala National Park [Sunrise or Sunset]

While it may require a rather long drive to reach the summit, it’s absolutely worth it! The Haleakala National Park is home to Maui’s highest peak, and no visitor to Maui should leave without being mesmerized by the views from up there!

“This special place vibrates with stories of ancient and modern Hawaiian culture and protects the bond between the land and its people. The park also cares for endangered species, some of which exist nowhere else. Come visit this special place – renew your spirit amid stark volcanic landscapes and sub-tropical rain forest with an unforgettable hike through the backcountry”

Haleakala National Park - Maui Sunrise

One of the most popular tourist attractions on Maui island is watching the sunrise from Haleakala National Park, but if you decide to do that you’ll need to wake up and be ready to go by around 2-3 A.M!

It’s quite the experience, and comes highly recommended! There are plenty of companies that offer sunrise tours, but I’d just recommend making your own Haleakala Sunrise Reservation, and saving the money for other day tours on the island!

If you decide to sleep in every day of your vacation (which is perfectly acceptable, lol), make sure you still get up there for a visit.

You can take a read through this article the “ Top 10 Things to Do on Haleakala ” for some more information, but I’d definitely recommend taking a hike through the park!  You’ll be amazed at the views, but just bring plenty of SPF as you’ll be in lots of direct sunlight!

While you won’t need ALL day at the national park, I won’t include anything else as I’m sure the drive and hike will take lots of your energy!

Haleakala Crater

Haleakala Crater

Maui Itinerary Day 3: Pool Day & Kaanapali Resort

After two pretty eventful days so far in Maui, spend some time in “vacation mode” and soak up your resort or accommodation amenities!

I’d also recommend taking a drive over to Kaanapali Resort and taking a stroll through there! When I visited I really enjoyed my time down there, but I was also pretty happy that I wasn’t staying at one of the resorts there (as it’s quite busy)!

There are tons of amazing shops, restaurants, and beach bars though, and you also find plenty of beach chairs to rent (if you’re staying at an Airbnb that doesn’t have beach access)!

Just try and take it easy today and relax, because what’s next on the itinerary is going to be a long but amazing day!!

Maui Itinerary Day 4: The Road To Hana

“it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”  ―  ralph waldo emerson,.

Road to Hana - Maui itinerary

The “ Road To Hana ” is a world-famous highway that is carved into the coastlines of Maui, and provides some of Hawaii’s most jaw-dropping oceanfront views! When it comes to scenic coastal road trips, it really doesn’t get much better than the Road to Hana, and it’s become one of the biggest tourist draws to this lush green Hawaiin island!

While the distance traveled on this legendary road is only 52 miles, don’t let that fool you ― this is an all-day adventure, and will require an early start! The journey can take anywhere between two to five hours one-way (depending on how many stops you make), and is filled with narrow one-lane bridges and hairpin turns!

Road To hana - Best Maui Itinerary

“The Hana Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. The road leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools, and dramatic seascapes. Please keep in mind that you’ll encounter challenging turns and narrow bridges along the way, so it’s important to exercise caution and take your time. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the lovely views, so get an early start and take your time on your drive. While it’s all about the journey, once you reach the beautiful and quiet town of Hana, you’ll see why it’s worth the trip.”

Check out this article by Matador Network titled, “ The ultimate guide to the Road to Hana, Maui ” for some more information and how to plan for the adventure!

The Road to Hana is seriously a MUST-DO while you’re in Maui Hawaii, because you’ll love the journey to Hana, which is considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers!

Road to Hana Waterfall

Maui Itinerary Day 5: Molokini Crater Snorkeling Tour

While there are tons of places around Maui that are great for a quick snorkeling session, there’s no better snorkeling in the area than Molokini Crater! Located just a quick boat ride away in between the islands of Maui and Kahoʻolawe, the Molokini Crater is a crescent-shaped volcanic crater that has unbelievably crystal clear water and fantastic marine life!

If you’re a certified Scuba diver, I’d definitely recommend looking into booking a fun dive here as well!

“It’s world-famous due to the wall and drift dives available. The backside of Molokini drops nearly straight down to 360 feet. The inside reef of Molokini also offers great diving opportunities. We suggest only advanced divers dive the backside of  Molokini , where you’ll likely see many different types of shark, moray eels, many species of tropical fish, manta rays, dolphins, and vibrant reef. Within the crater, search for octopus, moray eels, sharks, and hundreds of exotic fish.”

Check out this Instagram video below to see what I mean about the water!  It’s truly spectacular and definitely worth the snorkeling day-trip!

View this post on Instagram The devil is in the details ? (swipe to see dem, and don’t forget to follow @shangerdanger for more epic underwater imagery) on this day we got to this popular dive site in the afternoon and had to wait for the tour boats to clear out so that we could tie off to a mooring ball. From above and below the blue of the water was the most amazing I had ever seen. I would guess the visibility was over 200ft, but what’s funny is that it’s almost always like that at Molokini Crater. It’s located far from the south coast of Maui and is a protected nature preserve. #hawaii #underwater #boomerang #freediving #molokinicrater #makena #kihei #maui #southshore A post shared by Shangerdanger (shane) (@shangerdanger) on Jul 20, 2019 at 10:07am PDT

Maui Itinerary Day 6: The Aquarium of Hawaii, Maui Brewing Company & Lahaina

Selected as one of the Top 10 Aquariums in the world, no visit would be complete without a visit to Maui Ocean Center!  Head over here in the morning after breakfast, and spend a few hours learning all about Hawaiin marine life! With over 60 different interactive exhibits, shows, naturalist presentations, and cultural activities – there really is a little something for everyone!  It’s open daily from 9 am – 5 pm.

Tickets can be purchased there, but you can save $5 per ADULT ticket if you book in advance online.

Maui Aqaurium - 7 Day Itinerary

Maui Brewing Co

After you’ve had your fix at the aquarium, make the quick 20-minute drive around Maalaea Bay and arrive at the Maui Brewing Co in Kihei for Lunch.  This is Hawaii’s Largest Craft Brewery, and has become a hotspot among tourists and locals!

There’s a full-service restaurant and tasting room where you can take a 45-minute guided  Brewery Tour  for $15, which I personally loved! You’ll get to learn all about the history of the company, sample lots of beer, and learn about the brewing process (and what makes MBC unique).

The burgers at the restaurant are delicious, but the main reason to come here would be to try out a beer flight or two (as the beer is incredible).

If you’re making decent time, you could also drive along the Kihei Road down towards The Shops at Wailea! It’s a nice cruise along the beach, and it’s the other main touristy area filled with vacation condos and luxury resorts.

Exploring & Sunset Dining in Lahaina

Once you’re done with your time in Kihei, make the short drive back to the west coast and stop in Lahaina! It’s my favorite major city on Maui, and a fantastic place to just walk around, watch surfers, enjoy a sunset, and have some dinner/ nightlife.

I’d strongly recommend enjoying a meal at the rooftop bar at  Fleetwoods on Front Street !  We had dinner there one night (which was incredible), and the vibe really was awesome up there. Beautiful ocean breeze, sounds of waves hitting the beach, and beautiful sunset views of Lanai in the distance!

“Owned by Mick Fleetwood of the popular band Fleetwood Mac, this Front Street staple offers some of the best views possible from its stunning rooftop deck. Not only did they win the 2014 Aipono Gold Award for Best Cocktails on Maui, but they won our vote as well! Grab an ocean-view seat on the roof for happy hour, daily from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and enjoy live entertainment while sipping a specialty cocktail. We recommend the Fleetwood’s Pimm’s Cup with muddled strawberries, mint, and cucumber, Pimm’s No. 1, Grand Marnier, Lemon, Orange Juice and Ginger Beer, or the Starshine with Ocean Vodka, Local Starfruit, Housemade Vanilla & Mint Simple Syrup, Fresno Chile and Li Hing Mui salted rim.” – Lahaina Own

Maui Itinerary Day 7: Relaxing Spa Day & Hawaiin Luau Dinner Show

So it’s the last day of the week your in Maui itinerary, and I personally think you can’t end your vacation without a bit of pampering! Whether you’re looking for just a basic 60-minute massage or a full-day spa package, check out this article for the Top Spas on Maui and find something you think sounds good to you.

During our stay at the Ritz Carlton, I thoroughly enjoyed their 80-minute “Man’s Massage”, and it really set the tone for the rest of the day!

Maui Itinerary

Hawaiin Luau Dinner Show

For your last night in Hawaii, I’d recommend soaking up the culture at an iconic “Hawaiin luau”.  There are tons of different options available, but I’d recommend this one:

Old Lahaina Luau Maui : “Soak up Hawaiian history and culture at the 3-hour Old Lahaina Luau in Maui. Enjoy hula dancing, an oceanfront setting, and fresh island fillets, as well as other traditional dishes. You’ll be greeted with a Hawaiian lei and tropical drink from the bar before settling in for a lively performance against the Maui sunset. Traditional Lahaina Luau on Maui Enjoy local cuisine, cultural dancing and island crafts Learn about the rich history of Maui Take in fabulous ocean views Watch traditional and contemporary hula performances!”

OR – if it’s not your first in Hawaii or you just aren’t interested in a Luau, you could always reserve a spot at the award-winning restaurant Banyan Tree , because they’ve got a fire show every night which was super fun to watch.

More Things to Do & Places to Visit on Maui

While I do think I outlined a pretty amazing Maui itinerary, there really is a lot more to explore on this island! Here are few more epic things you should get up to while on the island!

This is one of the last major towns located towards the beginning of the Road to Hana, and is definitely worth a visit!  It’s got some really great shopping, fun restaurants, a few lively bars, and a top-notch health food store! It’s got a great relaxing surfer vibe, and this is probably where I would lIve if I moved to Maui. I ended up eating at several of the shops in town, and everything was delicious, and this is the perfect place to stop for a classic Hawaiin shaved Ice!

Maui Itinerary - Paia Town

Waihee Ridge Trail

If you’re feeling extra adventurous and looking for a good hike, the Waihee Ridge Trail is particularly awesome!  It starts off with a pretty intense climb, but the views you’ll get of the Maui mountains, as well as the coastline, are well worth it.  I only hiked this for the first mile or so (and then had to circle back since I had forgotten to bring a water bottle and it was super hot), but will definitely be completing the circuit when I make it back to Maui!  You’ll definitely need your own car to get to the start of it though!

Waihee Ridge Trail - Maui Itinerary

Kapalua Coastal Trails

This flat and breezy 1.76-mile walk along the various beaches of Kapalua is an absolute must for people staying in the area! It’ll only take about 30+ minutes or so, but you’ll get some really stunning viewpoints, and might even be able to spot some turtles and dolphins out in the water!  The trail leads from the Ritz Carlton all the way to the scenic Kapalua Bay, a famous place for snorkeling with turtles, and also the location of  Merriman’s Maui – which regularly wins awards for having the best Mai Tai!  If you’re a big fan of hiking though, you could also check out the other hiking trails in Kapalua !  I’ve heard great things about the Mahana Ridge trail, but it just sounded a bit too intense for me on a hot day!

That would be a great way to add a bit of fun to your vacation! Also, I didn’t get up to too much nightlife, but I’d recommend you read up on this article The 10 Best Nightlife spots for Maui if you’re looking to drink and dance a bit more.

Also, I’d definitely recommend picking up a guide book before your trip! While I do hope I’ve helped you tremendously with your trip planning, having a guidebook while you’re in Hawaii can be a really great resource! Here are a couple solid options to pick up:

Tips on Finding Hawaii Vacation Deals

Facebook

Save time and money by booking your rental car, hotel room, and airfare together and make planning your vacation easier.

How to Find the Cheapest Vacation Packages

Understanding Hawaii’s travel seasons will make it easy for you to book an affordable trip to the Rainbow State. With summer and winter being peak travel times for the islands, you can find vacation deals by booking during the “shoulder” seasons—spring and fall. Fortunately, Hawaii is just as beautiful and magnificent during fall and spring as it is in summer and winter, so aside from the cost of travel, nothing will change about your trip to Hawaii.

Should You Book an All-Inclusive Package?

Planning a trip is, what we call in Hawaii slang “humbug.” It’s a bother, a nuisance—even stressful. But it doesn’t have to be. By booking an all-inclusive vacation package, the hard work is done for you. Cars are rented, hotel rooms are booked and it can be cheaper to book a package versus booking everything ala carte.

Best Areas to Stay on Each Island

While there are no bad choices for places to stay in the islands—you are in Hawaii after all—there are some areas that are very well suited for travelers. Waikiki on Oahu has a variety of accommodations, malls and restaurants all dotting the golden shores of Waikiki Beach. On Kauai, Hanalei and Poipu are perfect for visitors who want to be close to the beach during their island stay—and in a similar vein, Kaanapali on Maui is a perfect blend of resort luxury and island living that will truly make visitors feel like they’re in paradise. On Hawaii Island, also referred to as the Big Island, both Kona and Hilo will provide travelers with convenient accommodations, activities and dining options.

The Top 3 Hotels and Resorts on Each Island

  • Hilton Hawaiian Village
  • Turtle Bay Resort
  • Grand Wailea
  • Kaanapali Beach Hotel
  • Fairmont Kea Lani
  • 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay
  • Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa
  • Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
  • Fairmont Orchid
  • Hilton Waikoloa Village

On Oahu, the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, Turtle Bay Resort and the Halekulani reign supreme. Maui’s Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, Kaanapali Beach Hotel and Fairmont Kea Lani are popular choices amongst travelers. For Kauai, the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, The ISO and the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa are stunning accommodations that will make it hard to even leave your room—while on the Big Island you can’t go wrong staying at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Autograph Collection, Fairmont Orchid and Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Maui & the Big Island

Both Maui and the Big Island are great places for travelers looking to escape from their worldly distractions. Instead of waking up to traffic and city noise, on these islands, the soft sounds of birdsong and crashing waves will serve as your natural alarm clock.

Hawaii Travel Tips

You’ll want to hit the ground running—presumably to the beach!—once you’ve landed. Also be sure to pack a few jackets or hoodies along with your beachwear, as the islands typically has “passing showers” from time to time due to its tropical climate. Another major travel tip to remember is that, unless you’re staying on Oahu, you will absolutely need to rent a car to fully enjoy the best of each island, as public transportation options are limited on the out islands.

Do most use a tour company and if so, who would you recommend?

We don’t like to be rushed and would be open to spending a night in Oahu returning to Maui at the end of the second day. If we prefer this, would we be on our own or is there a tour company that would assist? We would travel very light using a backpack for essentials, keeping our hotel room on Maui the entire time.

Thanks for any and all advice.

You will also save money overall this way.

Live Aloha,

What area will you be staying in on Maui? Friday traffic on Maui tends to be heavy. There is no specific reason for this but it has become a tradition.

When making your plans try to avoid rush hours in Honolulu.

We fly to Honolulu from Maui quite a bit. We will usually book a later flight home to Maui. If we get everything done early we will go to a kiosk,, print a boarding pass, go thru TSA and walk right up to the Hawaiian Airline help desks. Think they are around gate 17. The desk can rebook you onto an earlier flight , if they have space. This can happen when you have no check in luggage and when an earlier flight has space. They have never charged us any change fee.

Waikiki would be fun for a night. We have found that the hotel prices are very reasonable there.

have fun studying all the Pearl Harbor tours. Make your selection as soon as possible.

Practice Aloha

The Getaways

Oh, forgot to add that you do not need any tour companies!!!

Thanks for the quick replies. All information and options are appreciated. It’s nice to know a tour company isn’t needed, which allows us a bit more flexibility.

Exactly, Jimta. Plus the extra expenses. If they can't add days just follow my previous advice.

Welcome to the vibrant tapestry of Hawaii, where each island is a unique brushstroke painting a picture of paradise. Let's embark on a whirlwind tour of the major players: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Big Island (Hawaii), Molokai, and Lanai.

Waikiki Beach:

  • Ah, Waikiki! A sun-soaked playground with a dash of nightlife that rivals the stars. Whether you're a beach bum or a water sports enthusiast, this iconic stretch of sand has something for everyone.

Pearl Harbor:

  • Pay your respects at Pearl Harbor, home to the somber USS Arizona Memorial. It's a history lesson and a humbling experience rolled into one.

Diamond Head:

  • Lace up those hiking boots for a trek up Diamond Head. The panoramic views from the summit are worth every step, and your Instagram will thank you later.

  • Sink your toes into the white sands of Hapuna Beach. Crystal-clear waters beckon, and it's the perfect spot to lose track of time.
  • Allow me to introduce you to Molokai, where tranquility and local culture reign supreme. It's the road less traveled, and trust me, it makes all the difference.
  • If luxury resorts, snorkeling adventures, and rugged landscapes sound like your kind of paradise, Lanai is calling your name. Embrace the serenity and let the Pineapple Isle work its magic.

Hawaii, with its perennially pleasant climate, might seem like a year-round destination, and to some extent, it is. However, savvy travelers know that timing is everything when it comes to maximizing your Hawaiian escapade.

High and Low Seasons:

  • Hawaii's high season, roughly December to April, boasts drier weather and attracts more visitors. However, it also means higher prices and larger crowds. If you're a fan of a quieter paradise, consider the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) for a more intimate experience.

Weather Considerations:

  • Each island has its own microclimate, so researching the specific weather patterns of your chosen destination is key. For instance, the windward side of an island tends to be wetter, while the leeward side is drier. Plan accordingly to make the most of your beach days.

Special Events:

  • Keep an eye on local events and festivals. Whether it's the humpback whale migration (December to April) or the Aloha Festivals (September), timing your visit with these unique experiences can add an extra layer of magic to your trip.

Budget-Friendly Options:

  • If you're looking to snag some deals, consider visiting during the off-peak months. Airlines and hotels often offer discounts to entice travelers during quieter periods.

In the next leg of our journey, we'll explore the plethora of accommodation options, from lavish resorts to cozy beachside bungalows. So, tighten your lei, folks; the best is yet to come!

Early mornings and weekdays are your golden tickets to beating the crowds. Popular attractions tend to be quieter during these times, allowing you to enjoy a more serene experience.

Absolutely! Many restaurants in Hawaii cater to diverse dietary preferences. You'll find a plethora of delicious vegan and vegetarian options that showcase the flavors of the islands.

While public transportation is available on some islands, renting a car provides the flexibility to explore at your own pace, especially if you want to venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems.

Absolutely! Keep an eye on events like the Merrie Monarch Festival, celebrating hula and Hawaiian culture, or the Aloha Festivals, which showcase the diverse traditions and spirit of aloha. Planning your visit around these events adds an extra layer of cultural richness to your Hawaiian experience.

How Much Does a 2024 Hawaii Trip Cost? (+ Budget Saving Tips)

W hat family doesn’t dream of a visit to Hawaii? The Hawaiian Islands hold incredible appeal and intrigue for families as a vacation destination. With spectacular beaches, incredible landscapes, and kid-friendly resorts, it seems easy enough to pack your bags and head across the Pacific for a Hawaii vacation. But how much does a Hawaii trip cost? We’ve crunched the numbers to come up with guidelines for a Hawaiian vacation budget.

Below is an outline of travel costs that families can use when visiting Hawaii for the first time . This includes the approximate cost of flights and accommodations, how much to pay when renting a car in Hawaii, what time of year to travel in order to save money, and how to plan for the cost of special experiences like a helicopter tour of Mauna Kea or surf lessons.

With the right planning, your family can determine how best to allocate your precious travel savings to design the Hawaii vacation package of your dreams. If you want to cut this budget down, check out these 105 tips for doing Hawaii on a budget . These are also some great tips for saving money to travel .

Hawaii Budget Assumptions

For calculating Hawaii trip costs, this post will outline pricing for two adults and two children between the ages of 6-11 , traveling from the east coast of the United States in the summer months , and spending 5 nights each on Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii , for a total of 10 nights, 11 days.

These islands were chosen because they offer the common introductory Hawaiian experiences: Oahu is home to Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, and the North Shore, while the Big Island of Hawaii has a laid-back vibe perfect for relaxing, and is home to six of Hawaii’s nine national parks including the best options for volcano viewing and hiking. You can use this guide to pick the best Hawaiian island for your family.

I have organized the costs of a trip to Hawaii by airfare, car rental/transportation, accommodations, food, and activities , including tips and ideas for savings in each category. If you want to skip to the bottom line, a summer trip to Hawaii for a family of four for 10 nights costs approximately $16,690, or about $417.25 per person, per day. But read on to see how this breaks down and where you can save money.!

Cost of Airfare to Hawaii

Note that this post contains affiliate links. If you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission.

The biggest cost differentiator when purchasing flights is whether your family is flying from the west coast of the U.S. or somewhere else (midwest, east coast, etc.) Expect to pay around $865-1,300 per person traveling from one of the east coast hubs in the summer months, while flights from California may be $700-900 in the summer.

Honolulu on Oahu has more flight connections to and from mainland U.S. airports than any other Hawaiian airport, so that is typically the point of arrival or departure. To maximize your vacation time, be sure to price out flying into Oahu and out of the Big Island (Kona is the largest airport on the Big Island) or vice versa.

This will save you another inter-island flight back to your initial destination for your return flight. If you choose Maui as your second island, you can often find direct flights from Maui to many U.S. cities.

Another huge cost savings can be gained by flying mid-week if at all possible. Flights in and out of Hawaii jump up in price on Saturdays and Sundays since it is primarily a leisure travel destination, not a business location.

Flight prices are also dependent on the time of year. The festive period, Thanksgiving week, and popular spring break weeks will price out similarly to summer dates, if not more. January and February are typically the cheapest time to fly to Hawaii if you have the flexibility to get away then.

For inter-island flights (like connections between the Big Island and Oahu), Hawaiian Airlines and Mokulele are your best bets. Hawaiian Airlines will feel similar to a full-service airline, and importantly, you can use or earn points on most of the major U.S. airlines like Delta and United when booking flights on this airline because of their mutual affiliation.

Mokulele is a typical low-budget airline. Expect limited service and no frills, but it certainly works and there can be significant cost savings, given that it is a very short flight time.

Prices for an inter-island flight are usually under $60 per person for a one-way flight and most flights are less than one hour in length. Do take note of flight departure times, though. It’s always best to schedule these inter-island flights for mid-day, so that your family is in the air between check-out time at one hotel and check-in time at the next hotel. Early morning departures may be a little cheaper, but then you’re stuck filling several hours before you can check into your next accommodation.

Be aware that Southwest Airlines does offer direct flights from several California airports to all the major Hawaiian Islands. Remember that Southwest prices aren’t published on flight comparison sites, so you must book directly with the airline.

For this post, I assumed that families would spend $900 per person to get to and from Hawaii, and then another $60 per person on a one-way inter-island flight. You’d want to budget for an additional inter-island flight if you need to get back to your island of arrival for your return flight to the mainland U.S., however.

I’d highly recommend signing up for Going to get alerts on flight sales to your dream destinations.

Total airfare cost: $3,840

Cost of Accommodations in Hawaii

Basic rooms that sleep four at full-service luxury resorts, like Disney’s Aulani on Oahu or Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island, price out around $700 per night in the summer months. You can easily spend $1,000 a night or more for more spacious accommodation, like larger suites or condos with kitchens at these properties.

For budget travelers, even three-star hotels in Hawaii price out at around $250-400 per night in the summer months. Often these properties sacrifice beach access or beautiful locations and expect rooms to be quite basic. But most will have that sought-after amenity of a great pool so they certainly work for families who don’t require a lot of frills.

For those who veer away from resorts and toward quieter, self-catering accommodations, expect vacation rentals to range from $250-1,500 per night in the summer. Prices on the Big Island tend to be a little lower and a better value overall than Oahu.

Keep in mind that having a kitchen may bring down your food costs, especially if you choose to cook some meals yourself, or simply prepare basic breakfasts and sandwiches and keep drinks and snacks cold. Resorts are not known for inexpensive food, after all.

Also, take note of what’s included when booking resort vacation packages in Hawaii. Some include the cost of all the on-site amenities, while others do not. Complimentary breakfast is not always a given here, either. Other properties have a big markup when it comes to daily resort fees ($30 per person per day is not uncommon). Reading the fine print is important for this style of accommodation.

Another cost-saving strategy is to book early, especially for peak summer dates. Many of the popular resorts are fully booked for July and August by February. So booking accommodation in the fall for summer travel makes a lot of sense just so you have access to all the room category options. Plus, many properties offer pay-in-advance discounts, though you’ll definitely want to invest in travel insurance should you decide to take advantage of those lower rates.

See the 9 best Maui resorts for families and the 7 best Oahu hotels for families .

I used the $700 average nightly rate for a lower category room at full-service resorts as my price calculation for accommodation costs.

Total Accommodation Cost: $7,000 for 10 nights

Transportation costs in Hawaii

Of course, if you want to get off the property of the resort and explore some of the natural beauty of the Hawaiian islands, you are going to need a way to get around. The cost to rent a midsize SUV is typically around $400 for 5 days, including taxes and fees.

Be sure to book early if you’re traveling to Hawaii during busy periods; rental cars often sell out a few weeks prior to peak travel weeks. When calculating total transportation costs, I assumed families would rent a car on both Oahu and the Big Island for the duration of their trip, plus another $150 in gas and parking fees.

Check car rental prices on Kayak

While both islands have public transportation by way of bus routes, most families find this method of travel prohibitively time-consuming to get to the various spots that interest them. For families that envision not leaving the resort much, but still want a taste of both islands, you can book a driver to take you around for the day for around $600 per day.

If you opt not to rent a car, you’ll also need to account for airport transfers. Private transfers price out around $70-150 for one-way service to various accommodations within a reasonable drive of the airport.

Total Car Rental/Transportation Cost: $950

Food Costs in Hawaii

There’s no way around it: eating in Hawaii is expensive. Many families who don’t plan ahead and take this into account have serious sticker shock when they arrive. Remember, a lot of the food has traveled by boat for over a week to get to the Hawaiian Islands.

One great rule to keep in mind, both when grocery shopping and dining out, is to look for food that is sourced locally. Not only will it be cheaper, but it will taste fresher and reduce your carbon footprint. For example, stop at markets and roadside stands for produce. It’ll be a fraction of the cost of what fruits and vegetables cost at the grocery stores and it makes for a great cultural immersion experience.

This is another example of why renting a car ultimately often saves money: because resort mini-markets are very overpriced. If you can get to a big box store to stock up on snacks or simple meal ingredients, there will be cost savings. That said, even grocery shopping is expensive. If you’re on a very tight budget, consider doing a little research in advance. Most of Hawaii’s grocery store chains are affiliated with a mainland counterpart. You may be able to use your loyalty card from home for discounts.

Naturally, dining out is also pricey. Look for accommodations that provide complimentary breakfast; this will be a huge cost saver up front. Next, aim for more reasonably priced lunches, like roadside stands or packed picnic fixings while you’re out exploring. This way, lunch will cost about $12 per person, instead of $25, which you can expect to pay at resort restaurants. Then you can indulge in lovely dinners with a little less guilt about the price tag. Expect dinner to cost around $50 or more per person, younger children who order off a kid’s menu will be significantly less.

Given that, we can assume that families of four will spend around $250 per day on food costs.

Total Food Cost: $2,500

Tours and Activity Costs

Undoubtedly the top reason families love coming to Hawaii is the natural beauty: gorgeous views, incredible beaches, and diverse landscapes. Fortunately, this is all completely free to enjoy once you arrive.

It’s quite easy to spend days exploring the islands without spending a dime other than on food and gas. Add in a few days of leisurely enjoying resort amenities, and it means activities don’t have to break the bank compared to other travel expenses.

That said, a trip here is often a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so families tend to want to do and see it all while here. A favorite bucket list activity can include surf lessons, which can cost around $100-200 per person for an hour or two. You may also want to visit Pearl Harbor. Most of the national parks in Hawaii are free to enter, but the three that do charge entrance fees are around $30 per car. Check to see if your resort will host a luau dinner during your stay, or plan to arrange to attend one off-site one evening. The cost is around $120 per adult and kids are usually half off (but this includes dinner).

The big ticket item is usually a helicopter tour. Costs can differ drastically based on where you go, how long, and your departure point. Generally, a tour that originates in Hilo, the rainier side of the Big Island, is a cheaper location yet offers incredible views of the volcanoes that dot the island. The cost for this for a family of four is around $1556.

Total Activity Cost: $2,400

Of course, for a vacation this expensive, you want to make sure you purchase travel insurance .

Total Cost for a 10-day Trip to Hawaii

The total cost for a 10-day trip to Hawaii for a family of four is about $16,690. This assumes nice, four-star accommodations and a few splurges on activities and meals. Of course, you may also want to budget for some souvenirs from Hawaii , we were very tempted by some beautiful paintings when we visited!

As we discussed above, families can save money on more budget accommodations, vacation rentals, preparing their own meals, staying at a resort to use the pool and beach and not renting a car or doing other activities. For West Coast families, it is also easy to visit for just a week or even five days. But if you are traveling from the East Coast and taking a 10-hour flight, you probably want to stay at least 10 days.

One of the best ways to save is to use airline, hotel, or credit card points to offset some of those expenses. If it is going to be a trip of a lifetime, save those points to make it happen!

Let’s recap the Hawaii budget breakdown:

There are cheaper locations to travel to, especially if your family merely wants sunny weather and sandy beaches. But Hawaii is one of the most unique locations in the world, with its indigenous culture, lush landscapes and rugged mountains, and incredibly luxurious yet kid-friendly resorts.

It has a correspondingly hefty price tag, but families unanimously consider a trip here money well spent, and many return year after year. Here are some tips for planning a budget trip to Hawaii .

Finding these activities on your own can be challenging, but Carter has you covered. Here are seven activities at a variety of price points and activities to enjoy on your next trip to Hawaii.

“For those seeking an unparalleled adventure, a helicopter tour to Molokai promises a mesmerizing journey through Hawaii’s untouched beauty,” she said. “As you soar above verdant valleys and cascading waterfalls, the island’s rugged landscape unfolds beneath you.”

No doubt, this view will be stunning, but there’s more to come.

“The pièce de résistance is a cliff landing, where you’ll step onto a remote, breathtakingly beautiful part of Molokai, accessible only by air,” she said. “This extraordinary vantage point offers a sense of awe and tranquility that’s simply unmatched.”

Kayak and Waterfall Hike Adventure

  • Average price: $150 per person

“Kauai’s Hule’ia National Wildlife Refuge serves as the backdrop for an unforgettable paddle and hike excursion,” she said. “Drift along serene waterways, flanked by lush jungle, before embarking on a scenic hike to a secluded waterfall.”

After the hike, you’ll have a chance to relax.

“Here, amidst the symphony of nature, enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch. This private adventure combines relaxation and exploration, allowing you to connect with Hawaii’s natural wonders in an intimate and personal way.”

Niihau and Napali Sailing Adventure

  • Average price: From around $200 and up

“Embark on a sailing charter towards the mysterious ‘Forbidden Island’ of Niihau, a journey that unveils the dramatic beauty of the Napali Coast,” she said. “The coastline, with its towering cliffs and hidden sea caves, is a spectacle best admired from the water.”

Enjoy taking in the beautiful scenery, while making lasting vacation memories.

“This sailing adventure offers a blend of serenity and excitement, as you navigate crystal-clear waters and marvel at the untouched splendor of one of Hawaii’s most picturesque regions,” she said.

Private Luxury Manta Ray Night Snorkel

  • Average price: From around $130 per person

“The Big Island’s waters come alive at night, and there’s no better way to witness this than on a luxury manta ray night snorkel,” she said. “Begin with a scenic sunset cruise aboard a state-of-the-art catamaran, where the colors of the setting sun reflect off the ocean.”

This will certainly be stunning, but the real adventure begins when nightfall begins.

“As night falls, dive into the warm waters and watch in awe as graceful manta rays glide around you, illuminated by underwater lights,” she said. “This surreal experience is both thrilling and serene, offering a unique glimpse into Hawaii’s marine life.”

Private Mauna Kea Night Hike and Stargazing Expedition

  • Average price: $300 per person

“Ascend to the summit of Mauna Kea, the highest point in Hawaii, with an expert guide by your side,” she said. “As you reach the top, the views are nothing short of spectacular, with the island stretching out beneath you and the sky above transforming into a blanket of stars.”

She described this night hike as a must-do for any stargazing enthusiast.

“This private night hike and stargazing expedition provides an unparalleled opportunity to explore the cosmos from one of the world’s best vantage points.”

Snorkel Boat Trip to Molokini

  • Average price: From around $179 and up

“Set sail for Molokini, a partially submerged volcanic crater renowned for its clear waters and vibrant marine life,” she said. “This chartered boat trip offers a snorkeling experience like no other.”

A truly magical experience, she said you’ll spend the day swimming among colorful coral reefs teeming with tropical fish.

“The stunning beauty of Molokini, both above and below the water, ensures a day of adventure and discovery that you’ll cherish forever,” she said.

Cowboy-Style Sunset BBQ on a Working Ranch

  • Average price: From around $85 per person

“Immerse yourself in Hawaii’s rich ranching culture with a sunset barbecue dinner on a working ranch in the Big Island’s picturesque Upcountry,” she said. “As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, savor a delicious BBQ feast prepared with locally sourced ingredients.”

Enjoy feasting on authentic Hawaiian fare, while taking in the gorgeous scenery.

“This authentic cowboy-style experience provides a taste of Hawaiian hospitality and the rustic charm of ranch life, set against the backdrop of the island’s breathtaking landscapes,” she said.

You won’t regret spending money on any of these once-in-a-lifetime excursions. If you have the money to add one to your trip, do yourself a favor and schedule it.

Lodgify Lowdown

Lodgify Lowdown (May ’24): Shocking News for Hawaii Vacation Rentals

' src=

Happy belated Memorial Day!

We hope the long weekend and short work week have left you feeling refreshed and ready for the month ahead. But first, let’s dive into the latest industry news, including a major update on Hawaii’s proposed vacation rental ban, new legislation taking effect in California, and Airbnb’s Summer Release.

Plus, who doesn’t like a little industry gossip? Keep reading to the end of the post to get the scoop!

Your monthly rules and regulations roundup

Hawaii cracks down on vacation rentals.

Last month, we reported on two new bills being considered that could lead to the restriction or even prohibition of vacation rentals across entire Hawaii counties. Now, we can confirm that one of these bills, Senate Bill (SB) 2919 , has been approved.

SB 2919, which Governor Josh Green signed on May 3, will allow individual counties to set their own rules related to vacation rentals. Counties will now have the ability to designate vacation rentals as nonresidential use for zoning purposes as well as tax, regulate, and even ban them altogether .

We’re already seeing the effects of this new bill: Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen has announced plans to phase out vacation rentals operating in the apartment district , including 7,000 units overall and 2,200 in West Maui, specifically.

hawaii trip planner

Unsurprisingly, this plan is receiving considerable backlash, and Mayor Bissen even expects the county to be sued. However, the bill’s proponents are hopeful that it will make a positive difference.

“As we press forward with our ongoing wildfire response and recovery efforts, SB 2919 will be a pivotal tool to address Hawaiʻi’s housing crisis, while ensuring our essential housing programs for Maui recovery remain robust,” Governor Green explained in a statement .

For those who own a vacation rental in Maui, we recommend patience . It’s yet to be seen whether the county council will pass Bissen’s measure. And if it is passed, nothing will change overnight: The identified vacation rentals in West Maui would phase out by July 1, 2025 and rentals in the rest of the county by January 1, 2026.

New legislation heading hosts’ way in California

Meanwhile, California hosts should prepare for three new bills taking effect July 1:

  • California Assembly Bill 537 bans advertising, displaying, and offering rates that do not include all fees and charges for vacation rental lodging (except for fees and taxes that are government-imposed).
  • California Senate Bill 478 makes it illegal to advertise, display, or offer rates for any good or service that don’t include all mandatory fees (again, except for those that are government-imposed).
  • California Senate Bill 644 requires hosting platforms, third-party booking services, and hotels to permit cancellations for at least 24 hours after reservation confirmation with no penalty to the guest.

hawaii trip planner

The gist: Starting July 1, California vacation rental hosts will need to include cleaning and other “junk” fees in advertised rates in an effort to promote fee transparency. You’ll also need to allow free cancellations for 24 hours after reservations are confirmed.

If you own a vacation rental in California and haven’t updated your rate advertising and cancellation policy yet, you’ve got a month to get everything in order!

Airbnb news

In lighter news, May was another eventful month for the industry’s top OTA. Airbnb released its first quarter 2024 financial results , reporting its most profitable Q1 ever, and made several major announcements as well.

The 2024 Summer Release has arrived

The most important news came in the form of Airbnb’s 2024 Summer Release , which the company shared on May 1. The release has several new upgrades for hosts, including:

  • Earnings dashboard improvements: The dashboard is now more interactive, breaks down earnings by listing, and offers extra insights such as nights booked, occupancy rates, and average guests and nightly stays.
  • Listings tab updates: You can now edit the order of the photos in your Listing tab photo tour to prioritize the best parts of your home.
  • Quicker host-guest app transitions: Easily switch between the host and guest sides of the Airbnb app thanks to this new update.

While the release includes some new features for group trips, the biggest update for guests is undoubtedly “Icons,” Airbnb’s new category of extraordinary experiences hosted by the biggest names across music, TV, sports, art, and more.

Airbnb’s goal: to “take you inside worlds that only existed in your imagination—until now.”

hawaii trip planner

Of the 11 Icons that have been released so far, examples include the opportunity to sleep inside a recreation of the iconic floating house in “Up,” Prince’s Purple Rain house, and the Ferrari Museum in Italy.

Icons are featured on Airbnb’s homepage, are mostly free (those that aren’t free cost under $100 USD per guest), and will be added to throughout the year.

Goodbye to experiences

Shortly after unveiling Icons, Airbnb announced that it will be removing about 5,000 Experiences and tours that don’t meet its standards . Airbnb reached out to impacted hosts directly to let them know.

According to a statement sent to PhocusWire , Airbnb “regularly evaluate[s] Experiences based on the host’s expertise, the activity’s uniqueness and local relevance, and guests’ ratings and reviews and remove[s] those that continue to provide low quality experiences.”

If an Experience you host is being removed, you should have already been alerted by email. Listings will be removed on June 20, and reservations after that date will be canceled and refunded.

Hello to EV charging

In other news, Airbnb has partnered with ChargePoint , a leading provider of networked charging solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), to meet guests’ growing demand for EV charging .

hawaii trip planner

Thanks to this partnership, ChargePoint will now offer Airbnb hosts in the U.S. an exclusive package that will make it easier to purchase and install EV charging at their rentals. Guests can then use the ChargePoint app to charge their vehicles at Airbnbs with ChargePoint chargers as well as any of the 900+ thousand charging stations in their network.

Considering that listings offering an EV charger see more bookings and average income than those that don’t, this could be a great opportunity to add EV charging to your amenity list.

Lodgify’s latest report reveals top summer lodging destinations

Check out the report for the full list of the top 15 cities as well as the biggest trends to be aware of. If you haven’t already, now’s the time to be putting these findings to work to ramp up for summer bookings!

AI assistants: the future of trip planning?

It’s looking more and more like AI assistants may be the future of trip planning, with two new updates being released in May alone.

hawaii trip planner

At Google’s annual developer conference, the company revealed an updated version of its AI chatbot service Gemini Advanced , which will roll out this summer. With the new update, Gemini Advanced can now use spatial data and reasoning to make decisions and prioritize when planning trip itineraries.

The same day, Expedia Group unveiled Romie , its new AI-powered trip planning tool.

Unlike tools whose work is done after trip planning, Romie is designed to “roam” with travelers. It helps with researching, planning, booking, providing recommendations and personal advice, and shopping throughout your entire trip. And it’s not limited to the Expedia app, but can work within WhatsApp and text conversations to facilitate a seamless experience.

While these innovations may impact guests more than hosts, it’s important to know how guests will be finding you moving forward —and that may be increasingly through AI assistants like Gemini and Romie.

Want to try out an AI-powered messaging tool? All Lodgify customers have access to our cutting-edge AI Assistant , which offers intuitive responses to guest inquiries and requests to streamline your interactions.

Representing Lodgify at the 2024 Scale Show

We were thrilled to be able to attend (and sponsor!) the Scale Show in Barcelona in mid May!

The Lodgify team at Scale 2024

We represented Lodgify with an impressive booth stocked with candy, swag, and a digital photobooth. Members of our Sales Team offered product demos to anyone interested in learning more about Lodgify, and our SEO & Content Manager Alberto Fernández also gave free SEO consulting sessions to anyone curious about how to optimize their website.

Two of our team members even got the chance to share their expertise at the event. Alberto gave a Ted Talk on the “quiet website syndrome,” addressing common reasons why vacation rental websites don’t get enough traffic. And Carla Chicharro, our Head of Marketing, gave a presentation on actionable SEO to transform your rental into an online booking magnet.

Congratulations to everyone who made the Scale Show such a success!

The industry gossip is…

…all about the VRMA.

You’ve likely heard about the VRMA’s president and CEO, Kimberly Miles, stepping down at the end of April. While this is newsworthy on its own, given that the VRMA is the largest vacation rental association in the U.S., it’s even more so when you hear the rumors: According to Steve Milo’s podcast StraightFireVR , Miles was actually fired due to poor attendance at VRMA events in Paris, New Orleans, and Houston.

Apparently, numbers were so low that some vendors were considering boycotting future events.

Then, less than a month later, the VRMA’s board chair Dru Brown stepped down as well. Why? According to an open letter to the VRMA community from VRMA Vice Chair Michelle Williams, they’re simply “embracing this change as an important opportunity for us to chart a new path for VRMA.”

hawaii trip planner

Williams has been serving as acting chair during the interim, and the board was supposed to have elected a new chair at the May 29 association board meeting. However, there’s been no news on that front yet.

Meanwhile, the search for a new CEO continues as well, and interviews are currently underway.

So, what’s next for the VRMA? We can only hope a return to normalcy, as the VRMA International Conference in Phoenix is less than five months away.

See you next time!

Summer—and the start of peak season for many hosts—is less than a month away! Time to ramp up for busy booking calendars, higher temperatures and, of course, all of the updates above.

Best of luck in the weeks ahead, and we’ll be back soon with more industry news!

More : USI Affinity Travel Insurance Review

  • Superior coverage levels for medical expenses and evacuation.
  • Very good travel delay coverage of $1,500 per person.
  • High baggage loss coverage of $2,500 per person.
  • Baggage delay coverage is good at $500 per person but requires a 12-hour delay for benefits to start.
  • Has the second-highest average cost among top-scoring plans.

Cruise insurance can be any travel insurance policy that has the coverage features you want. It does not have to be a travel insurance policy with “cruise” in the policy name. It’s helpful to have missed connection coverage included in a cruise insurance policy, as the cost of catching up to a cruise can be significant.

Cruise insurance generally covers the following—up to your policy limits— if the expense is caused by a reason listed in your policy or not excluded from coverage:

  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Missed connections
  • Lost, stolen, damaged or delayed baggage and personal items

A cruise travel insurance policy may also compensate you if your cruise ship is disabled and you’re stuck on board without power, food or water for a specified amount of time listed in your policy. For example, the WaveCare plan from Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection provides a flat $500 reimbursement for cruise disablement if you’re stuck on the ship for five hours or more without one of these: power, food, water or a restroom.

Typically, cruise insurance also provides a 24/7 hotline for travel emergencies. You can also get a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver if you buy coverage within a certain period, usually within 14 to 21 days of your initial trip deposit. This means medical expenses related to pre-existing conditions that arise during your trip will be covered.

Cruise insurance is worth considering if you can’t afford to lose the money you paid in advance for nonrefundable trip costs if you have to cancel your cruise.

Cruise insurance can also pay for costs associated with medical treatment during your trip, emergency medical evacuation, trip delays, lost luggage and more.

The average cost of cruise insurance is $457 per trip , based on Forbes Advisor’s analysis of rates for 37 cruise travel insurance plans.

Cruise insurance costs will generally depend on your age and the cost and length of your trip.

Below you’ll see examples of cruise insurance costs for the best cruise insurance policies.

You can buy cruise insurance from your cruise line, through a travel agent or from a travel insurance agent or company.

Although you can purchase a policy right up to your departure, there are advantages to buying travel insurance right after booking your trip . One is that you can maximize the length of your trip cancellation coverage. For example, if you buy a travel insurance policy three months before your departure and get seriously injured a week before you leave, you can file a trip cancellation claim.

Buying cruise insurance within the first two weeks or so of making your first trip deposit also qualifies you for additional coverage. This can include a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver or a “cancel for any reason” travel insurance (CFAR) upgrade, depending on the policy.

CFAR allows you to recoup 50% or 75% of your forfeited, nonrefundable trip costs, depending on your policy. You must cancel at least 48 hours prior to your departure. CFAR increases your travel insurance cost by about 50%.

If the dates of your trip change, your travel insurance company should allow you to change the dates of your policy to match the new travel dates. You can also add items to your itinerary later—such as shore excursions—and then add them to your travel insurance coverage.

Whether it’s your first voyage or you’re a cruise veteran, having the right travel insurance is important. This is especially true if you’re a senior traveler who wants a high level of medical coverage while traveling.

Here are good starting points for coverage you’ll likely want in a cruise insurance plan:

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you 100% for the pre-paid and non-refundable deposits you lose if you have to cancel for a reason covered by the policy .

Trip Interruption Coverage

This will reimburse you for unused trip costs if your trip is cut short because of illness, injury, death, a family emergency back home or other reasons. Trip interruption insurance can also pay for the extra expenses of a trip interruption, such as a one-way plane ticket home on short notice. The reason for the interruption has to be listed in the policy.

Travel Medical Insurance

This pays for medical expenses associated with injuries and illness you get while on the trip. The top travel insurance plans have $500,000 in travel medical insurance , but you might find $150,000 to be sufficient for a cruise. If you’re a senior, good travel medical coverage is crucial.

U.S. health plans may have very limited or no coverage when you’re outside the U.S. And Medicare doesn’t cover medical care outside the U.S., with only very narrow exceptions .

Emergency Medical Evacuation Coverage

Medical evacuation travel insurance covers the costs to get you to the nearest adequate medical facility or even back home if it’s medically required. Your travel insurer’s emergency assistance team can also help arrange for the medevac.

Coverage for Pre-existing Medical Conditions

Many travel insurance plans give you a pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver if you buy the plan within two to three weeks after your first trip deposit. This is one of the advantages to buying travel insurance shortly after you book your trip. Without the waiver, medical expenses related to pre-existing conditions that flare up during your trip won’t be covered.

“Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) Travel Insurance

Canceling for reasons that aren’t listed in the policy isn’t covered, unless you have already purchased a CFAR upgrade. This typically reimburses you 75% of trip costs, as long as you cancel at least 48 hours before your departure. Adding it increases a policy cost by an average of 50%.

For example, you could make a “cancel for any reason” claim if you’re worried about being seasick—a reason not covered by standard trip cancellation insurance. Buy this coverage shortly after you make your first trip deposit or the purchase window for it will close.

“Interruption for Any Reason” Travel Insurance

Cutting a trip short for reasons that aren’t listed in the policy aren’t covered, unless you have already purchased “interruption for any reason” travel insurance. This coverage typically reimburses you 75% of trip costs. It usually adds 3% to 10% to your travel insurance cost. You generally must buy it within 15 to 20 days of making your first trip deposit. Benefits don’t kick in until you are a specified amount of time into your trip, for example 48 or 72 hours.

Only a few travel insurance companies currently offer “interruption for any reason” coverage, such as Nationwide, Seven Corners, Travel Insured International and WorldTrips.

Additional Types of Travel Insurance for Cruises

A comprehensive travel insurance plan will package additional benefits such as travel delay insurance , baggage insurance and missed connection travel insurance .

The best travel insurance plans offer high levels of reimbursement and short waiting periods for benefits to go into effect when things go wrong. A travel insurance agent can help you match your concerns to the right travel insurance package.

Case Study: Cruise Insurance Saves the Day, Again

I’ve unfortunately filed several cruise insurance claims in recent years, but I’m so grateful I had coverage. When my father passed away on the day we were set to depart, insurance reimbursed us over $3,000 for the trip cancellation. Later, my wife and I tested positive for Covid-19 in Paris right before our river cruise. We had to cancel and pay for a week’s stay in a pricey hotel, but insurance covered the entire $12,000 claim. Most recently, I was diagnosed with cancer before a cruise and had to cancel for surgery. The documentation was complex, but our policy paid the remaining $2,000 to $3,000 after refunds without hesitation. Travel insurance gave us peace of mind through it all.

– David R., Texas

Cruise insurance is worth it if you don’t want to risk losing the non-refundable money you invested in your trip if the unexpected happens. For example, let’s say you missed the boat. Cruise insurance can pay for you to rejoin the cruise if you can’t board on time because of an issue covered by the policy, such as severe weather.

The average cost of travel insurance is 5% to 6% of your trip cost, according to our analysis of travel insurance rates. That means cruise insurance might be worth it if:

  • Your non-refundable trip costs are much more than you can afford to lose.
  • You are traveling internationally and your U.S. health plan has limited coverage abroad.
  • You are traveling to a remote area with limited health care facilities and want insurance that will pay for medical transportation to an adequate medical facility.
  • You are traveling to a hurricane-prone area where your trip could be scuttled due to weather.
  • Your trip involves connecting flights or multiple destinations, which increase the chances of travel delays and lost baggage.
  • You want to be partially reimbursed if you decide to cancel your trip or return home early for any reason.

What Are the Travel Insurance Requirements of Different Cruise Lines?

Cruise lines departing the U.S. generally do not require travel insurance. But it’s a good idea to buy a policy that includes travel medical insurance and emergency evacuation insurance. That’s because U.S. health insurance is unlikely to cover you if you travel outside of the United States.

To find the best cruise insurance, Forbes Advisor analyzed travel insurance data to score travel insurance policies based on the following factors. We include only travel insurance policies that include missed connection coverage.

Missed connection coverage (up to 30% of score) : Plans with higher reimbursement levels for missed connections scored more points.

Average price (up to 25% of score) : We analyzed travel insurance quotes for a variety of traveler ages and trip costs to develop an average price for each plan. We scored the average cost for each travel insurance policy for trips to the popular destinations of Italy, Mexico, France and the U.K. for common traveler profiles:

  • Couple, age 40, for Italy trip costing $6,000
  • Family of four for Italy trip costing $15,000
  • Family of four for France trip costing $15,000
  • Family of four for U.K. trip costing $15,000
  • Couple, age 65, for Italy trip costing $6,000
  • Couple, age 70, for Mexico trip costing $3,000

Medical expenses (up to 10% of score): Travel medical insurance was evaluated by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with travel medical expense benefits of $250,000 and up per person were given the highest points.

Medical evacuation (up to 10% of score): Emergency medical evacuation/transportation coverage was evaluated by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 and up per person were given the highest points.

Trip interruption travel insurance (5% of score): Points were given if trip interruption reimbursement was 150% or higher.

“Interruption for any reason” travel insurance: (5% of score): Policies earned points if an “interruption for any reason” upgrade was available.

How do I buy cruise insurance for a long-duration cruise?

The coverage in many travel insurance policies will max out at 90 days, so you’ll need to look for a travel insurance plan that can provide coverage for a long trip length.

For example, Allianz Global Assistance ’s OneTrip Premier Plan can cover a trip up to 366 days and includes $200,000 in trip cancellation coverage and $1 million in emergency medical evacuation benefits. It also provides trip cancellation coverage in the event that there is an NOAA hurricane warning at your destination.

How do I buy insurance for cruise shore excursions?

If your shore excursions are pricey, insure the nonrefundable deposits for the excursions and the cruise. If your excursions are included in the cruise cost, you would simply insure the cruise trip cost.

Travel medical insurance can cover medical expenses you incur while on and off the ship. But if your excursions involve adventure activities or extreme sports, be aware that many travel policies exclude these from coverage. Still, there are adventure travel policies and optional upgrades that will cover injuries due to activities such as mountain climbing, parasailing, skydiving and hot air ballooning.

Review your policy to be sure the plan you’re buying will cover your adventurous fun. If it doesn’t, ask about an adventure sports add-on, or consider a company such as World Nomads that caters to the adventurous traveler.

Do I need a special cruise insurance plan?

You don’t need a travel insurance plan that’s specifically for cruises. Any good travel insurance plan with generous medical benefits and the other benefits you want can work well for a cruise.

Can you buy cruise insurance after booking?

You can buy cruise insurance after booking your trip, right up until just before departure. The downside to waiting is that you likely won’t be able to cover pre-existing medical conditions, and you’ll lose the option to add cancel for any reason coverage.

Buying right after you book also lets you lock in trip cancellation coverage right away.

Can I cancel a cruise without insurance?

You can cancel a cruise, but may have to pay a cancellation penalty for the cruise and/or flights. You could also lose the cost of pre-paid shore excursions. If you don’t have travel insurance for these losses, check the credit card you used for booking. Some credit cards include trip cancellation coverage.
