Tour Highlights

sunrise at Haleakala

As an AUTHORIZED PARTNER with Haleakalā National Park , Haleakalā EcoTours will treat you to Maui’s premier Haleakalā Tour. Some call Haleakalā the Eighth Wonder of the World. Nowhere else can you climb from sea level to 10,023′ in less than an hour. At the summit, the 3,000′ deep crater you peer down into is 7 miles long, 2 miles wide, and 21 miles in circumference.

Encounter the elegant Silversword plant, found nowhere else in the world as well as Hawaii’s state bird, the Nene goose. Haleakalā is home to hundreds of rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Learn the importance of protecting their habitats and upholding the National Park mission of Preservation and Conservation.

Haleakala Sunrise Tour Crater Sights

Maui’s rich farming and ranching history is still evident by the vast pastures that line the side of the mountain. Kula’s cool weather and rich volcanic soil make the area an ideal spot for a number of Lavender, Protea, and Macadamia Nut farms.

Haleakala Sunrise Tour Makawao

The Hawaiian Cowboys or Paniolos have roots set deep in the town of Makawao. This small town still has hitching rails at storefronts just as the locals once used to tie up their horses.

haleakala crater sunrise tour

Today Pa’ia is a popular surf destination, however, Pa’ia’s history is as intriguing as it is fascinating. Learn about how the Sugar Plantations shaped this town and the culture of the island, and how this small north shore town was once a gathering place for entertainment and fun.

Haleakala Sunrise Tour Haiku

Like Paia, Ha’iku has its roots in agriculture. The Pineapple industry built this small, rural town, with the pineapple cannery as the center of the action. Ha’iku also played a pivotal part in World War 2 by being the home of the Fourth Division Marines during the 1940s.

Ancient Hawaii

Haleakala Sunrise Tour Hawaiian History

The impressive voyaging skills of early Polynesians changed the course of history by spreading their culture across the Pacific. Learn about this ancient evolving people and culture, and the myths and legends that inspired them. From the first arrival of the Marquesans to the second wave of Tahitians, see how they established a civilization and birthed monarchies, including the Kamehameha dynasty which united the Hawaiian Islands.

Description of image

Greeting the sunrise in Haleakalā National Park is one of the most popular things to do on Maui. Experience perhaps the most beautiful sunrise on earth with our professional, local guides on our Haleakalā Sunrise Tour.

For almost 150 years, visitors to Maui have ascended Haleakalā to experience the miracle of demi-god Maui’s efforts. But for over 1,000 years, before those early missionaries climbed the mountain, Haleakalā was considered sacred by Hawaiians. Known as wao akua, or “realm of the gods,” Haleakalā’s summit was visited only when necessary, and only then by certain individuals such as kahuna (“priests”). Learn how Haleakalā’s animals, plants, and rocks all developed a special meaning and purpose.

Come with us as we explore the stories of this enchanted realm. Be inspired by the National Park landscape, and immerse yourself in the sacredness of Haleakalā’s summit.

TESTIMONIALS

The Road to Hana tour was, in just one word, SPECTACULAR! Our tour guide and driver, Travis, was so welcoming and knowledgeable. He taught us so much about the history of the island and about how the locals live their lives. I loved Travis' passion for his home and how much pride he took in giving the tour and showing us all a wonderful time. The views were absolutely breathtaking. It was an experience that I will honestly never, ever forget.

We found this tour to be much better than driving the Hana journey ourselves. The guide, Paula, was knowledgeable and the lunch was delicious. I appreciated her sharing the details on how to drive safely. The van was just the right size, 12 passengers. The chosen stops were spot on. The turtle siting was a nice surprise and the spectacular sunset capped off a wonderful day.

We did the Road to Hana tour with tour guide Yvonne and it was absolutely incredible!! Yvonne was so knowledgeable about the native plants, animals, and local culture. It was really terrific to be able to be guided by a true Hawaiian who has so many fun and interesting stories to share along the way. We stopped at Uncle Harry’s tacos and they were truly the best tacos I’ve had in my life.

Haleakala National Park Summit Sunrise Reservations

HaleakalĀ National Park

Haleakala National Park is home to Maui's highest peak. Rising 10,023 (3,005 m) feet above sea level, Haleakala means "house of the sun" and is where demigod Maui lassoed the sun, slowing its passage so people had more time to dry kapa (cloth) and grow food. The dormant volcano's "crater" is actually a valley carved by erosion. Sunrise at the summit of Haleakala has been a visitor attraction since the late 1800s when Samuel Clemens wrote: "It was the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed, and I think the memory of it will remain with me always." The park's Summit District begins at 7,000 feet (2,134 m) of elevation and reaches 10,023 feet (3,055 m). The summit's high elevation, the lack of light, and environmental pollution, and dynamic weather patterns make it an ideal and popular place to view the sky. Due to the popularity of sunrise viewing at the summit and limited parking, Haleakala National Park now requires reservations for each vehicle entering the park before sunrise (3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.).

Reservations. A reservation is required for each vehicle entering the park from 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Beginning April 7, 2021 you may book a reservation up to 60 days in advance and 2 days in advance of the start date.

Reservation Tip! Login to your account or create a new account before Haleakala National Park Summit Sunrise tickets go on sale. You can only add a ticket to your cart and proceed with your reservation if you are logged into your account.

Please Note: Tickets are per vehicle, not per person. Tickets are limited to one per customer every three days.

Please click here to access Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the Haleakala Summit Sunrise reservation process.

Need to Know

Be prepared to show your reservation confirmation email on your device when you enter the park in your vehicle and a photo ID matching the name of the reservation-holder. If your confirmation is accessible on your device, you do not need to print out a copy.

Reservations do not ensure a parking space at any particular parking lot. Reservation holders may be directed by park staff to available spaces. Each driver of a non-commercial vehicle in any of the four highest elevation parking lots (Summit, Haleakala Visitor Center, Kalahaku and Leleiwi) must have in their possession a sunrise reservation during sunrise hours (3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.). There are no sunrise reservation refunds due to inclement weather.

Save time in line by paying the vehicle entry fee on rec.gov after making your reservation! Visit Haleakala Site Pass for more information. The vehicle entry fee is separate and also payable via credit card on the day of your visit. The park does not accept cash or check. The park honors the Annual, Senior, Access and other Interagency Passes as well as the Annual Hawai'i Tri-Park Pass with appropriate photo identification. There is no pass discount for sunrise reservations.

The Summit is remote and is high altitude. Emergency medical assistance is at least one hour away. Fill up your gas tank and bring food. Neither is available in the park. Visitor centers may not open until after sunrise. Visit the park Operating Hours and Seasons page, https://www.nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/hours.htm, for details.

Always respect speed limits. The park road passes through endangered species habitat.

Be prepared for all kinds of weather. Temperatures at the Summit are at least 20 degrees colder than at sea level and often drop below freezing. Dress warmly or in layers. Bring water, sunscreen, and wear sturdy shoes.

Please respect natural resources and cultural artifacts, rocks, and structures. Stay on trails, and leave everything where you find it.

Remove plants, seeds, animals, and mud from boots, gear,

pets, and vehicles. Clean your gear before entering and leaving the recreation site. Stay on designated

roads and trails, and follow local guidelines for firewood. For more informatio n visit the National Invasive Species Information Center .

Haleakala Volcano, which fittingly translates to House of the Sun, is an amazing and awe-inspiring place to watch the sunrise. Head up to the summit of Haleakala in the dark and wait for the first break of sun to light up the crater. This is one experience that (when the conditions are right), really lives up to the hype. It makes the list as one of our top things to do on Maui.

While you can do this early morning adventure yourself, doing it with a tour is so much more enjoyable. Not only do they take care of everything for you (no need to try to get a reservation yourself) it is a true luxury not having to drive yourself up the mountain in the dark. Especially if you head out with one of the best Haleakala sunrise tours that we have included on this list.

Bring a jacket (and maybe a blanket) and head out with one of our recommended tour operators.

The Best Haleakala Sunrise Tours

While there are plenty of great tours to choose from, these are our top three picks for a great trip! We are including the breakfast restaurants which are correct at the time of publishing, though they may change.

Valley Isle Excursions Sunrise Tour

We had the opportunity to experience sunrise with Valley Isle Excursions , and it was a pretty epic morning. Dare we say, worth the 2:30 am wake up.

We were picked up very early and driven up with 16-ish new friends. Thankfully, our guide knew we wanted to continue sleeping so he kept things quiet and we were able to sneak in another hour of sleep as we went up the mountain. As soon as we reached the entrance, we woke up excited!

We made it to the summit visitors center approximately an hour before sunrise. While this felt very early, I was happy to be there so early as we were able to get a great front row spot.

After the stunning sunrise and chant, we headed back to the van. We made one additional stop in the park before heading down the hill. We drove through upcountry Maui to breakfast at the Mill House in central Maui.

Receive 10% off your booking by using promo code HVG10 at checkout. You must use our direct booking link when using the code.

You can see a video of our tour experience with Valley Isle Excursions below. We had an amazing time!

Included in the tour: transportation, a knowledgeable guide, entrance to Haleakala National Park, the sunrise reservation, breakfast. Gratuity for your tour guide is not included.

Since 2002 they have planted over 20,000 trees and have given over $1.8 million to environmental and community nonprofits. So this is a company you can feel good about supporting.

Their tour begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or resort. They provide jackets for the sunrise viewing (though wear warm layers and socks…trust us!). After sunrise you’ll get an informative driving tour to learn about the history of Haleakala, the flora and fauna, and more. Breakfast is at Kula Lodge in upcountry Maui, and then you’ll be back to your hotel with the rest of the day ahead of you!

Polynesian Adventures

One of the largest and most trusted tour operators in Hawaii also offers a great Haleakala sunrise tour . Like the other tours, you’ll be picked up from your hotel or resort very early in the morning. The tour bus will take you up the hill (feel free to nap!) and you’ll arrive at the summit visitors center with plenty of time to spare. Once you watch the spectacular sunrise, you’ll be escorted back down the mountain while your guide entertains and educates you. Honestly on all of these tours you’ll learn a lot about Hawaiian history.

You’ll drive through upcountry to reach a local favorite spot, Kula Lodge, where you get impressive views of Maui as you eat breakfast. After breakfast you’ll enjoy the remainder of the drive back to your hotel or vacation rental.

Haleakala Eco Tours

Take a drive with Haleakala Eco-Tours. They take care of everything. After pickup from your hotel or vacation rental, they whisk you up the mountain in their 24 passenger van. You’ll arrive in plenty of time to watch the sunrise and listen to the sunrise chant.

After the tour, you have time to visit the Haleakala Visitors Center before you head out of the park. On your way down, your guide will talk story and give you the history of the volcano and ancient Hawaii. As you drive, you’ll get to see the towns of Kula, Makawao, and Haiku.

Breakfast is in the north shore town of Paia (currently at Island Fresh Cafe). After that, you’ll continue the drive back to your hotel or vacation rental so you can enjoy the rest of your day!

Haleakala Sunrise Tour FAQs:

Can you see the haleakala sunrise on your own.

You sure can! But there are some things to know before you do. First, you’ll need a reservation. These reservations are available through the National Park Service and are only $1, but they do sell out quickly. So plan ahead and set your alarm to buy!

You’ll also need to pay the entrance fee upon arrival to Haleakala National Park . The current entrance fee is $30 per vehicle.

There are no streetlights in the national park and the drive up the mountain is winding. Take care and drive slowly. And be sure to give yourself more than enough time to get there. You’ll want to arrive to your viewing point at least 30 minutes before sunrise, if not before. There will likely be a wait at the park entrance and you’ll want to take parts of the drive slowly, so factor that into your drive time estimates.

If you do plan to go on your own, we recommend downloading the Shaka Guide to keep you entertained during your drive.

We also have a Haleakala sunrise day in our itinerary , which will help you plan your route, where to watch the sunrise, what to do after the sunrise, and where to stop to eat on the way down. See more of the great things to do in upcountry Maui .

If you don’t want to do a tour but also the prospect of driving up this dormant volcano at 3 am isn’t exciting, you might want to consider heading to Haleakala for sunset .

Best Haleakala Sunrise Tour

Is a Haleakala sunrise tour worth it?

In our opinion, a tour was 100% worth it. We’ve visited Haleakala many times, but heading up for sunrise is another experience. We needed to leave our house at 3 am and being able to sleep on the drive up was such a luxury. Also, not being stressed about driving in the dark or getting there on time was a huge perk.

And there were other parts of the tour that made the whole experience worth it. We loved our tour guide and though we know a good amount about the history of Maui and Haleakala (it’s our job), we learned so much new, great information. And having the extra warm parkas to help keep us warm as we were waiting for the sunrise was hugely helpful. Those extra layers were important!

What to expect on a Haleakala sunrise tour?

All good tours will provide the same basic things:

  • Transportation from your hotel or vacation rental
  • A sunrise tour reservation
  • Entrance to Haleakala National Park for sunrise
  • A knowledgeable guide

Make sure you dress warmly (layers are your friend!) because it is unbelievably cold atop Haleakala before the sun comes up.

What is the best place to watch the sunrise on Haleakala?

There are a few places to enjoy the sunrise, but we really enjoy watching it from the Haleakala Summit Visitors Center, which is 9,740 feet above sea level. It is closed, but standing outside of it you can get a view of Haleakala Crater which is magical as the sun rises. Don’t go to the headquarters visitors center, which is only at 7,000 feet elevation and doesn’t provide any sort of a sunrise view.

Is sunrise better than sunset?

This is something that comes down to personal preference, but we have a whole article dedicated to the pros and cons of Haleakala sunrise vs sunset . Really what it comes down to is getting reservations (sunrise only) and if you want to be up at 2 or 3am.

If you aren’t a morning person regardless of jet lag, we recommend this private Haleakala sunset tour . Of course, you can DIY it but the drive down in the dark is a bit intimidating the first (few) time(s).

“My husband and I recently took our very first trip to Hawaii (and first trip without our 3 young children) to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We stayed in Maui and used your Maui Classic Itinerary . It made planning our trip so easy! We never had to worry about driving directions, finding bathrooms or parking lots, where we were going to eat a meal, the best spots to spend our day, or even details like when to leave to make the Haleakala sunrise and what trails to hit afterwards. Every single day of our trip was just about perfect, and your guide was a big determining factor for that. We even used it up until the last hour of our trip to find a good beach and great food in Paia Town before we had to be at the airport! So we just wanted to say THANK YOU for helping make this a very special trip that we will remember for the rest of our lives! ” Adam and Alyssa

For many first-time travelers to Maui, a visit to the island is not complete without experiencing a Haleakala sunrise.

It’s one of those magical Maui bucket list experiences that you’ll remember long after your trip, especially if you are lucky and have great weather and visibility for your Haleakala sunrise.

Despite the need to wake up at an ungodly hour on vacation and the chance that the summit could be socked in, more than two million visitors to the Valley Isle make the journey to the top of the crater each year.

Sunrise at Haleakala summit in Maui, Hawaii

So high is this experience on travelers’ wish-lists for things to do in Maui that Haleakala National Park, within which the summit of Haleakala is located, has introduced a parking reservation system to manage visitation for sunrise.

We’ve visited Haleakala for sunrise twice so far, once with perfect conditions: colorful skies and a spectacular sunrise, and a second time with a great sunrise and perfect visibility but without the blaze of colors that makes a sunrise (or sunset) epic for us.

In this article, we tell you everything you need to know to plan a trip to the summit of Haleakala for sunrise, including what to expect, where to go, how to make parking reservations, tour information if you don’t want to drive, and more.

Excited? Let’s get started discovering how to visit Haleakala at sunrise!

Sunrise at Haleakala: What to Expect

Sunrise at Haleakala is magical.

When the weather gods smile on you, the experience is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Haleakala National Park .

The summit of Haleakala, Maui’s dormant volcano, tops out at 10,023 feet, way above the clouds. Haleakala means “the house of the sun,” and the association between this Maui crater and the sun is in fact the subject of a famous Hawaiian legend.

But legends aside, a Haleakala sunrise is an almost religious experience.

Especially if you are lucky and have those colorful skies at dawn.

As you drive up in the dark, you will be treated to a night sky with millions of stars. Walk to the lookout, where you’ll be awed by the beauty of the still dawn as the sky gradually lightens and gets dressed in shades of pink and orange.

Then the sun emerges in all its brilliant glory, bathing the crater and its cinder cones in warm gold.

Colorful skies at Haleakala just before sunrise

You may hear collective “oohs” and “aahs”, or a smattering of applause, as the waiting crowd takes in the mesmerizing sight.

And if you are very lucky, a ranger may perform the sunrise chant — E Ala Ē — to awaken the sun and imbue everyone present with energy for the new day.

It moved me almost to tears when we heard it, in conjunction with a great sunrise, our second time at Haleakala for sunrise.

Haleakala Sunrise Reservation

A Haleakala sunrise reservation is required if you need a parking spot at the summit.

So if you plan to visit Haleakala for sunrise independently, you will need to make an advance reservation to be able to enter the park for sunrise (between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m.).

Reservations can be made online at recreation.gov, up to 60 days in advance of the date you plan to visit.

Slots are released at 7 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time 60 days in advance, with a second batch being released 48 hours in advance of any given date, also at 7 a.m. HST.

There is a reservation fee of $1.00 per ticket and you only need one ticket per vehicle. The ticket is only valid for the day reserved, and you can only buy one sunrise reservation in any 3-day period.

Refunds or exchanges are not issued due to weather or for any other reason.

Once you’ve made your reservation, download the confirmation email or print it. You will need to show it, along with photo ID that matches the reservation, and a park entry pass, to be able to enter the park.

Note that tickets for sunrise viewing are not available at the park and you cannot obtain one in person. The reservation HAS to be made online in advance!

Sunrise at Haleakala is a very popular Maui activity and slots do sell out, especially in high season. To ensure your spot, make your Haleakala sunrise reservation as soon as your date becomes available.

If you wait for the 48-hour slots to verify weather conditions, make your reservation as soon as slots go available. These tickets tend to get snapped up very quickly.

As I write this, there are no tickets available for the near term dates, but there are tickets available for the further out dates.

Getting to Haleakala for Sunrise

Sunrise time at Haleakala varies by time of year: it can be as early at 5.35 a.m. or so in the summer and as late as 7.00 a.m. in the depths of winter. If you visit Maui in winter , you can wake up a little later and still make it in time!

You can look up exact sunrise and sunset times for the date of your visit here .

You should plan to be at the summit at least 60 minutes before sunrise, so you can settle down at a good spot to watch the whole show, from dark sky to gold.

The colors in the sky, the pinks and oranges, appear before the sunrise, and they are an integral part of the show, making for the best photos.

Plus, the earlier you arrive, the higher the chance that you get your top choice of viewing spot at the summit (see more below about the various viewing areas at the Haleakala summit).

And there may be a line of cars at the entrance waiting to pay and get in, plus it takes time to park and walk to your viewing spot, so allow for possible delays and parking time.

If you want to arrive JUST to see the sunrise, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled sunrise time. It will already be light by then, but it’s still fabulous watching the golden ball peek out from the clouds and take over the skies.

Once you’ve figured out what time you need to arrive at Haleakala to be at your viewing spot at the time you want, you can use Google Maps to calculate when you need to depart from your hotel or vacation rental.

Note that it can take from an hour and 30 minutes to over 2 hours to get to the park entrance at the summit of Haleakala from resort areas in west Maui like Kihei, Wailea, or Kapalua.

From the park entrance to the summit, it is a drive of about 30 minutes. We suggest setting Google Maps to the Red Hill Summit when calculating drive times to decide when to leave.

If you’re based in Paia, or in upcountry Maui, your drive time will be less.

What’s the drive up Haleakala like?

It’s a 37-mile drive (along Highways 377 and 378) from sea level to the top of the 10,023-foot volcanic crater. That’s the most elevation gain in the shortest distance on the planet.

Haleakala Highway (also called Crater Road) is paved and well-maintained.

Crater Road features lots of switchbacks along its 20-mile stretch to the very top of the crater (see map ). Some of the bends are tight and steep, with drop-offs.

There are no guardrails, and the road is not lit, so be very cautious driving up in the dark!

Obey the speed limit signs, of course, but don’t be afraid to drive slower if weather conditions are unfavorable — you may encounter fog en route any time of the year, although the clouds usually roll in later in the day.

In winter, the road may be icy, so you may want to skip driving in favor of a guided tour if you are not experienced with driving in wintry conditions on icy roads.

Note that cows and nene (Hawaiian geese) can meander onto the road, so always be on the watch for animals and birds as you drive.

The road to the top of Haleakala can cause queasiness if you are prone to motion sickness, so bring some motion sickness medicine if you think you will need it.

Where to Go: Haleakala Sunrise Spots at the Summit

There are four sunrise parking areas at the summit of Haleakala, and, depending on when you arrive, park rangers will direct you to one of the parking areas.

Each parking area is close to a sunrise viewing area. And if the weather is good, any of the four Haleakala sunrise spots offers fabulous views of sunrise over the crater.

When a parking lot is full, it is closed for sunrise parking. It is imperative to arrive early if you have your heart set on the true summit!

From highest to lowest elevation, the four areas are:

  • The Pu`u Ula ula or the Red Hill Summit (at 10,023 feet, the very top of the crater)
  • The Haleakalā Visitor Center (at 9,740 feet)
  • Kalahaku Overlook (at 9,324 feet)
  • Leleiwi Overlook (at 8,840 feet)

Puʻuʻulaʻula, or Red Hill

Puʻuʻulaʻula , or Red Hill , is a popular spot for sunrise viewing at Haleakala.

You can walk up a few steps or a ramp to the small building at the top, which offers protection from the wind. It has large windows to allow for views in every direction, including over the crater.

Of course you can also stand just outside the cabin if you want photos without glass.

The Haleakala summit Viewing Cabin at sunrise

After you view the sunrise, you can catch the mellow golden light of golden hour on the rare and endangered Haleakala silversword plants that grow here.

Note, however, that you may not be able to see the full crater from the Red Hill Summit.

Haleakala Visitor Center

The Haleakala Visitor Center offers two locations for sunrise viewing.

Many visitors line up at the railing outside the visitor center building, from where you can get spectacular views of the sun rising over the crater. This is possibly the most popular (and crowded) sunrise viewing spot at Haleakala.

But you can also walk the small trail up to the Pā Kaʻoao viewing area, also known as White Hill. This hike is just 0.2 mile each way, but it is uphill.

This viewing area is a stunning spot for a Haleakala sunrise. It’s where we watched the sun rise on our second visit to the summit for sunrise. It’s also the spot where we heard a ranger chant the E Ala E, the sunrise chant, an experience I will never forget.

If you decide you want to walk up to the Pā Kaʻoao viewing area, and want to arrive while it’s still dark out, bring a headlamp or flashlight, because the ascent is rocky and you need to be able to see where you are stepping.

Kalahaku Overlook

The Kalahaku Overlook offers an expansive view of the crater valley and is an excellent spot for a Haleakala sunrise.

You’ll likely have fewer people here than at the Red Hill Summit or the Visitor Center railing, which makes for a more serene experience.

And sometimes, when the summit is socked in, you may still have good visibility at the the Kalahaku Overlook (or the Leleiwi Overlook).

The Haleakala Crater at sunrise

Leleiwi Overlook

The Leleiwi Overlook provides excellent views into the crater and is a great lower-crowd option for Haleakala sunrise viewing.

But note that it’s a 0.15-mile walk from the parking lot to the actual overlook, over a series of steps. Bring a headlamp or flashlight to light your way if you arrive in the dark.

Tips for a Great Sunrise at Haleakala Experience

Plan your haleakala sunrise experience for early in your maui vacation.

The day after you arrive from the mainland is an excellent time to plan to head up to the top of Haleakala for sunrise.

Because at that stage of your vacation, you are still likely to be on mainland time if you are visiting from other parts of the US, and waking up so early in the morning won’t seem quite as much of a hardship as later in your stay.

Fill up your gas tank before you head up the mountain

There is no gas available inside Haleakala National Park. Be sure to fill up your gas tank before you head up the mountain!

The nearest town to Haleakala National Park where you can get gas is Pukalani, and Ohana Fuels along the Haleakala Highway opens at 4 a.m.

Golden hour at the Haleakala summit in Maui, HI

Dress warmly

BUNDLE UP!!!

Temperatures at the summit of the Haleakala crater are MUCH colder than at sea level. Think 30 degrees colder. You may even see snow in the winter.

And the wind can make things substantially more miserable from a weather perspective if you are not dressed right.

We went up in December one year, and even though we had thermal underlayers, jackets, beanies, hats, and gloves, we were still glad to be back inside our heated vehicle.

Also remember to wear thick warm socks and closed-toed shoes to keep your feet and toes from freezing.

Bringing a warm blanket, on top of dressing warmly, would not be a bad idea, since the experience can mean being outdoors for up to an hour at the summit.

Bring a thermos of hot coffee or hot chocolate

A hot beverage will be welcome as you are sitting (or standing) at the summit, waiting for the skies to lighten, signaling the start of the show.

Know where to find restrooms

Public restrooms are located at the Haleakala Visitor Center at the summit.

Even though the visitor center may not be open at sunrise, restrooms can be accessed from the outside 24/7.

There is also a public bathroom at the Kalahaku Overlook.

Golden sunrise at Haleakala in Maui, Hawaii

Carry food and snacks

The Haleakala sunrise experience lasts several hours from the time you leave your accommodation to the time you return, and even more if you stay on to explore after sunrise.

Come prepared with food and snacks!

There is no food available for purchase at Haleakala National Park, and nothing will be open en route at that time of the morning.

Arrange whatever food and snacks you need the day before.

Bring drinking water

The Haleakala Visitor Center does have a drinking water fountain, but the park recommends you carry drinking water.

Do not drink water from the taps in the restrooms, since that’s recycled water.

Colorful sunrise skies Haleakala National Park in Maui

Don’t forget a camera or charged smartphone for photos

If you are a serious hobby photographer, a Haleakala sunrise is definitely a photo op for which it’s worth bringing your “gear.”

But for most visitors, a smartphone is perfectly fine for capturing photos and shooting video.

Don’t expect great cell service

The Summit District of Haleakala National Park is remote. Cell service can be spotty or non-existent.

Download or print whatever maps, documents, or brochures you need, prior to setting out for your Haleakala sunrise experience.

Manage expectations!

Weather conditions at the top of the Haleakala crater can be less than perfect any time of the year, and conditions can change rapidly as well.

Be sure to check the weather forecast the evening before, and drive up if it looks good, hoping that visibility is great when you arrive!

But be prepared for any type of weather and know that you may not have the best conditions at sunrise on the day you visit. The summit may even be completely socked in, with poor visibility.

Sometimes, it’s possible that the overlooks, which are at lower elevations, have clear skies or better visibility than at the summit, so you may want to try there if those parking lots are not full.

At the top of the Haleakala crater in Maui at sunrise

Plan to stay on to explore if you arrive independently

If you arrive on your own for sunrise at Haleakala, plan to stay on afterwards to hike or to see the views from the overlooks.

The Sliding Sands Trail into the crater is of course a several-hour undertaking, but you can always do a part of the trail if you are time-constrained.

And there are shorter hiking trails, like the Hosmer Grove Trail, that you can do as well.

Bring sunscreen and wear proper shoes if you plan to explore

The summit of Haleakala is exposed, so sunscreen is a must once it’s daylight, especially if you plan to stay on for a bit to explore.

And wear closed-toed walking or hiking shoes with good grip if you plan to hike.

Should you go for sunrise or sunset?

While the Haleakala sunrise experience is definitely epic and gets all the hype, sunset at Haleakala is also spectacular if you have good weather.

Plus, sunset doesn’t require an early wake-up call on vacation and you don’t have to worry about reservations either.

AND you can stay on for stargazing if you are so inclined!

In the end, whether you choose a Haleakala sunrise or a Haleakala sunset is based entirely on your personal preference!

Remember your National Parks Pass if you have one!

You have to pay the park entrance fee in order to be admitted for your Haleakala sunrise experience.

At the time of writing, the entrance fee is $30.00 per car, $25.00 per motorcycle, or $15.00 per person for walk-ins.

The entrance is valid for 3 days, and valid for both the Summit District and the Kipahulu District.

Bring your credit card to pay at the automated machine if you arrive outside of the hours when the station is staffed.

Haleakala National Park accepts the America the Beautiful National Parks Pass, so be sure to bring yours if you have one!

Haleakalā is known as the house of the sun.

Haleakala National Park’s past is quite fascinating. Before you visit the area, you should familiarize yourself with the geological history, traditional folk tales, and cultural significance surrounding the area – that way, you can fully appreciate the park itself!

Historically speaking, Haleakala National Park is built on and around a massive dormant volcano that last exploded sometime between 1400 and 1680. It has exploded over ten times in the last 1,000 years. Some of the valleys and mountains were actually formed by past eruptions!

While the Haleakala volcano is not the largest or most destructive in Hawaii, scientists think it caused immense damage the last time it erupted, and predict that it’ll erupt again in 400-500 years. They carefully monitor the area, watching for signs of an unexpected eruption.

Haleakala National Park also has areas of significant cultural importance. There are too many of these to properly cover in this article, though. So if you’re interested, I’d absolutely recommend doing your research!

One of the most significant, though, is also incidentally what created the name for the park – “Haleakala” means the “House of the Sun” in Hawaiian. The name originated because of a myth involving Maui, who legend says lassoed the sun to watch it descend.

Now, the Haleakala National Park is open to visitors every hour and day of the year for tourists such as us to enjoy!

How to Get Ready For Haleakala Crater

My top recommendation for any tourist preparing to visit the Haleakala National Park is to fully plan your itinerary and activities before you start packing. You’ll be packing very different items depending on what you want to do.

For example, if you’re interested in hiking in the upper reaches of mountainous terrain, you’ll want to bring the proper gear and clothing – more on that later.

Haleakala National Park is well-known for its terrain and landscapes, which some find so unique that they describe it as otherworldly. Whether you’re looking for beautiful green meadows, volcanic cinder cones, immense mountains, lush valleys, or fields of lava rock, Haleakala likely has the natural setting for you.

Things to do at Haleakala National Park

Although one of the most popular activities here is doubtlessly watching the sunrise/sunset, there are a multitude of activites you should prepare for. For example, if you don’t manage to secure a booking to watch the sunrise, you can always schedule a hike before sunset.

Check Out Hawaiian Wildlife

Haleakala National Park is the place for you if you’re interested in learning about and viewing unique Hawaiian wildlife that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Designated as a sanctuary for many species of rare flora and fauna.

One of the best examples is Hawaii’s state bird, the Nene, also known as the Hawaiian goose. In 1967, this bird species was teetering on extinction with only 30 specimens remaining. This is due to overhunting, disease, and destroying their natural habitats.

Now, thanks to the protection of the Endangered Species Act and the hard work of scientists and park rangers, over 3,000 birds remain statewide, a large percentage of which find their home at the Haleakala National Park.

As you visit the park, you may be lucky enough to see the majestic and beautiful state bird for yourself. Additionally, you might see other species of native Hawaii birds. These include the peuo, multiple types of forest birds, and the ‘ua’u, also called the Hawaiian petrel.

The ‘ua’u are small seabirds that navigate at night using the light of the stars. As such, they can often get confused by the lights of the city, and can exhaust themselves and become grounded as a result. If you ever find a grounded ‘ua’u, visit the NPS website for instructions.

Haleakala Camping

For those who truly want to experience nature first-hand, camping may be your activity. There is no better way to connect with, live in, and experience nature first-hand. This is especially true in a setting as beautiful as the Haleakala National Park.

For experienced hikers who wish to experience a difficult trail as much as camping, I’d recommend going to Paliku . This is roughly 10.4 miles down the Halemauu Trail. Or you can hike 9.3 miles down the Sliding Sands Trail . The Sliding Sands Trail is definitely the more difficult hike.

Holua is an option for those who don’t want to experience such a strenuous hike. Located 3.7 miles down the Halemauu Trail, it is just as gorgeous as Paliku. Plus it’s much easier to access for the average person.

For those who wish to experience nature without the inconveniences of overnight hiking, I’d recommend taking a scenic hike or biking. You can do this either on your own and at your own pace or with a tour guide.

Skywatching

Last but definitely not least of the three categories is skywatching. Haleakala’s skyscapes are unmatched in beauty, free of light pollution, and enthralling whether you’re observing the sunset, sunrise, or the stars.

The best place to admire the sky is at the Haleakala Crater Summit. Even along the trail, the view is unmatched if you veer away from the traffic.

Utop the summit, the horizon stretches uninhibited for over 150 miles. This allows you a completely unobscured view of the sky at any time of the day. From there, you can book tickets and enjoy the sunrise early in the morning. You can hike up and admire the sunset, or camp overnight and watch the stars.

Stargazing is often underrated and under-discussed, despite being one of the best activities to do on Maui at night. If you’re planning on doing so, stop by the Haleakala visitor center or search online for a map of the constellations!

Visiting Haleakala National Park can truly be a life-changing adventure. To ensure that you truly enjoy your experience, here are three tips for a perfect Haleakala adventure!

Haleakala National Park Tips

There are endless activities and sights for you to enjoy at the Haleakala National Park. I’ve done my best to separate most of them into three main categories.

Keep scrolling if you’re ready for a picture-perfect trip to Haleakala National Park!

Leave No Trace

One of the most important rules to respect when visiting natural treasure troves such as the Haleakala National Park is to leave no trace. Clean up any trash and camping materials to keep the animals and their habitats safe and clean.

Other essential principles are to never feed or get too close to the wildlife and treat the environment with its due respect.

If you’re interested in a chance to see these animals and more up close, book a seat on the Maui Haleakala Tour . If you’re interested, check out the latest prices and details !

Pack Smartly

That brings us to tip number two! If you’re planning on exploring the summit of Haleakala National Park, you must pack the proper items.

Although the warm tropical weather of ground-level Maui may convince you otherwise, you absolutely need more clothes than beach shorts and flip-flops.

If you’re planning on camping, I’d recommend bringing anything you can reasonably fit into your suitcase. Although there are rental shops for camping gear in the camp, it’s a costly investment that can be easily avoided. Remember, little fees pile up!

I’d argue that some other supplies are a must. For example, the weather at Haleakala can become suffocatingly hot. So I’d bring plenty of water to any excursion, reef-safe sunscreen , and a high-quality sunhat.

Finally, make sure you put together and pack a simple first-aid kit , especially for long hikes or overnight camping. Find the best prices and deals here !

Dress Warmly

A basic rule of tourism and travel is that the higher the altitude of the area, the colder it will be. Temperatures at the Haleakala Summit are on average twenty degrees Farenheit colder than at sea level.

If you’re planning on skygazing at the Haleakala Crater Summit, prepare for cold weather. Otherwise, the feeling of chilliness may ruin your experience!

Haleakala Sunrise reservations are only $1 a car but are absolutely required in order to see the sunset. Because of how quickly they sell out, I’d recommend buying tickets here at least two weeks before your planned date.

Without tickets, you will not be let in through the gate until after 7 a.m. , by which time the sunrise will be long over.

If you don’t manage to book tickets for the date of your visit, don’t worry – you can still experience a beautiful skyscape by planning to visit during the sunset, or even booking a Haleakala Sunset Tour .

Lots! You can hike, stargaze, camp, watch a breathtaking sunrise, go mountain biking, and talk to local park rangers!

Unfortunately, no! The area with the most easily accessible active volcanoes is definitely at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. However, Haleakalā itself is a dormant volcano, so there are multiple locations at the park where you can see lava rock formations.

With these three tips, your experience at the Haleakala National Park will doubtlessly be fun and memorable.
