25 of The Cheapest Countries To Visit

Travelling to cheap countries is one of the ultimate goals for budget travellers and here are some of the cheapest countries to visit.

These are great starter countries for the budget traveller. Although some of them can be quite hardcore for the beginner, such as India, which is sensory overload!

All these countries are around the same price to travel in.

You can get by on an average of $15 a day for simple accommodation, cheap food, and local transport. And maybe a beer or 2. You could get by on even less if you wanted to. This is just an average number.

For the basics these countries are cheap, however, just like everywhere else as soon as you start doing more activities the price will jump up.

For example, Ethiopia is dirt cheap, but if you want to do a tour into the Danakil Depression, which in my opinion is one of the best things to do there, then you will be spending over $100 a day for it.

Also if you stay in the more popular tourist areas in the cheapest countries to visit you will most likely spend more as the temptation to go out more will be strong.

Like I said the $15 a day is just an overall average.

One moment you could be in the city spending $25 a day, and the next spending $10 a day living cheap in the countryside.

These make some of the cheapest countries to visit in the world.

Cheapest Countries To Visit In Asia

I’ll start with one of my favorite countries in the world to travel to and a backpacker’s paradise. Thailand!

It easily makes one of the cheapest countries to travel to and is well set up for travelers to visit and get around.

The famous Thai food, friendly Thai people, white sand beaches, jungle trekking, and the superb cultural city of Chiang Mai in the north make it the best destination if you’re looking for not only one of the cheapest countries to visit but for a great vibe overall.

This is the big one. The ultimate budget travellers destination and easily one of the cheapest countries to visit.

It can be full-on and is a huge place to discover many different things. From the Himalayan Mountain range to the hot beaches of the south.

I spent a lot of time spending only $5 a day! Granted it wasn’t the nicest way to travel, but my funds were running low. $1 a night for a seedy, shitty, truckers hotel room.

Eating street food for fuck all, and taking local buses around. But hey I got to see the place!

It’s most likely the cheapest Asian country to visit.

As India is on this list, so is Pakistan!

Pakistan is more overlooked by people due to the whole image of terrorism in the country etc.

I’ve actually lived there for over a year as well.

My wife is from Islamabad in the north of Pakistan and highly recommends it for the food, culture, diversity of people, the weather being four seasons, and the mountain hiking in Pakistan.

It’s really sad more people don’t go, as Pakistan has so much to give to the budget traveller.

This part of the world is great for travelling cheaply in general and if you do it right Pakistan can be one of the cheapest countries to visit.

Flights into Islamabad tend to be more expensive than Lahore (it fluctuates and sometimes is less than half the price).

The best option if you’re on a budget is to fly to Lahore instead and then take a four-hour bus journey to Islamabad.

Keeping with the South Asian theme Nepal has to go on the list and is also one of the cheapest Asian countries to visit.

The main reason to go is to get out trekking in Nepal as that’s what the country is famous for.

It’s dirt cheap and full of adventurous activities along with cultural history, especially in the capital Kathmandu.

This one is slightly trickier as it consists of 17,000 islands, each offering its own vibe. Transport costs can add up if you move around a lot as you will need to take boats or budget flights.

But staying in just a few areas you can get a beachside wooden bungalow for $7 a night and eat good seafood for $5.

What more do you need on a beach? If partying it up in Bali it will cost you more than chilling on a quiet beach somewhere.  Elsewhere you can travel into tribal regions or go exploring the jungles and rivers. So much to experience.

Part of the “golden backpackers circle” (as I call it) of south-east Asia of Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos.

The northern city of Luang Prabang is one of the most culturally rich cities in the region and makes an excellent base to explore the countryside.

Cambodia is dirt cheap, along with Laos and Thailand.

If you visit Thailand then I strongly suggest keeping a bit of time to explore Cambodia, especially the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat

It also has white sand beaches and jungle trekking to do.

Kyrgyzstan is an often overlooked country for budget travellers, yet is perfect. It’s small, so easy to get around, has stunning mountains and lakes, you can stay with nomadic people, and it won’t cost you much.

Riding up into the mountains with nomads and living in traditional yurts with them is one of the best travel experiences you could have.

If you don’t know much about Mongolia you may be surprised at how big it is.

That can be a problem as transport around is not the best and if you end up doing tours it will cost more to travel in.

But just for generally getting by it’s a cheap destination and has some of the most beautiful landscapes, and visiting the Gobi Desert to stay with nomads is an unforgettable escape from the modern world.

Cheapest Countries To Visit In Europe

Due to the current conflict in the east of the country, the local currency has seriously devalued making it a great place in Europe to get by on a cheap budget and makes it one of the cheapest countries to visit.

Head to historic Lviv city and the Carpathian Mountains in the west, or go chill/party on the Black Sea coast.

It’s a very good place to consider. You can get a tasty rib-eye steak for just $3! Beer is on average $1 in the cheaper bars. Brilliant. Of course, there’s lots more stuff.

Ukraine is definitely one of the cheapest countries in Europe to visit.

Another cheap European country to visit is Bulgaria. I only visited the capital Sofia when I was there but loved it and have sworn to go back and see the countryside.

From what I briefly experienced there and along with advice from other travel blogger colleagues who feel the same way, I had to add it here as the perfect budget travel destination.

It’s probably, along with Ukraine, the cheapest of the countries to travel to in Europe.

Romania is right next to Bulgaria and continues the journey of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe.

Hiking in the Carpathian Mountains, medieval castles, and a lot of history it’s a must-see country in Europe.

A perfect budget travellers trip is to visit Ukraine then come down into Romania before getting into Bulgaria and then continue into Turkey (see below).

Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania)

The Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are some of the cheapest European countries to travel in and their small sizes make it easy to get around and see a lot of things.

If you are going to one of these countries then I would recommend seeing them all as they are next to each other and have a similar history.

I hitch-hiked through them and went camping everywhere on a trip across Scandinavia into the Baltic States.

Turkey is the dream destination for many backpackers and for good reason. I’ve visited several times now and never got bored.

The buzzing city of Istanbul to historic ruins and countless opportunities to get into nature, such as in Cappadocia, makes it great to visit.

It’s not the cheapest country to visit on this list but it’s not expensive either. If you are in Europe it’s very easy to get to as well.

I spent 2 weeks in Georgia and Armenia (see below) and loved it. They are cheap to travel and being reasonably small in size they are easy to get around and have a lot to offer the traveller.

Lot’s of history and beautiful mountain and lake landscapes.

Technically Georgia and Armenia are not part of ‘Europe’ as they are based in the Caucuses but they are very close to Europe and easy to reach from there.

Armenia goes hand in hand with Georgia as they are right next to each other and both make some of the cheapest countries to visit in the world. Perfect!

Armenia, like Georgia, is small and packed with history and stunning landscapes.

The country is dotted with ancient churches against a backdrop of mountain vistas. It’s probably one of my favorite countries in the world to take photos in.

Backpacking in Armenia is on my highly recommended list!

Cheapest Countries To Visit In Africa

Ethiopia is not only one of the most fascinating countries in the world but luckily enough also one of the cheapest and one of the best countries to visit in Africa overall.

There’s so much to see and do, with its changing landscapes, history, tribal regions etc.

Travelling around can be hard, but the buses are cheap. The roads were being improved when I last left so should be better now.

More travellers need to visit this place! It seriously blew me away.

I’ve travelled twice from Ethiopia to South Africa and starting in cheap Ethiopia, you then enter slightly more expensive Kenya, then more expensive Tanzania, then a lovely surprise awaits in Malawi as it’s not only one of the cheapest countries to visit but also one of the cheapest African countries to visit.

It’s also brilliant for chilling out after what can be hard travel in Africa, as just chilling by Lake Malawi on a beach and eating fresh fish is the best tonic to relax.

The great thing when just taking it easy on beaches in quiet areas with not so many tourists is there’s not really much temptation to spend money on stuff, except maybe the occasional beer.

Morocco is cheap and has so much to see and do, and only a stone’s throw from Europe with enough cheap flights coming in.

So if you happen to be travelling around Europe and want an exotic destination close by, then just take a quick flight over to Morocco.

One of the best meals I’ve ever had in my whole life was there and only cost $2. It was a delicious fresh fish tagine.

I actually lived in Egypt for a while in the late 90s’ and visited again years later just for travel and can say it’s a cheap country to travel around, especially if you love historical places.

It’s also easy to visit and get around as it’s a massively touristed country. Don’t expect and off the beaten path adventure there, but it’s a very fascinating country to visit.

Along with Ethiopia, Kenya is one of my favourite places in Africa and can also be one of the cheapest countries to travel to on the continent, if you do it right.

I say “if you do it right” because things will get expensive if you decide to do a lot of safaris.

But as far as budget backpacking goes Kenya can be done cheaply and has a decent setup for backpackers with hostels etc.

South Africa

Not the cheapest of the countries listed here but for a modern country it is definitely good for the budget traveller and has an excellent backpackers network and lots of great things to see and do.

Then there are the wine regions! And plenty of safari options especially at Kruger National Park.

Cape Town is a must-visit city at least once in your life and the surrounding Garden Route leading along the coast to the Indian Ocean is a superb road trip.

Cheapest Countries To Visit In The Americas

I would be amiss if I didn’t have Bolivia on this list as it’s generally regarded as the cheapest country to travel to in South America.

It’s the only country I haven’t been to on the list but comes highly recommended by fellow budget travellers and had to be included.

It also has everything from the Amazon jungle to the high altiplano plains, salt flats and mountains. I will definitely get there someday! Hopefully, you will as well.

Columbia is easily one of the most beautiful destinations in South America and with a rich cultural heritage.

I explored around the mountain areas there and some small towns or cities with a more laid back vibe.

One other country on this list that I haven’t visited but gets raved about in backpackers circles and is perfect for travellers from the US or Canada as it’s so close.

Ancient culture, white sand beaches, jungles, deserts, Mexico has it all.

Travel tip: Take travel insurance!

You never know what might happen so play it safe and get travel insurance. I have been robbed on my journeys and had a serious medical incident and thankfully I had insurance to cover it.

I use World Nomads and find them to be excellent.

So if you’re in need of some of the cheapest countries to travel to then these are 10 countries you should definitely consider.

There are others out there, but I selectively chose these not just because of their cheapness, but also the great experiences that they offer you as well.

Mongolia isn’t really cheap, considering you’re almost forced to take a tour to travel around, due to the fact that the whole country is basically a massive desert with no roads.

And you forgot about Iran: ridiculously cheap 😉

Armenia was by far the cheapest on my list. But I suppose it depends what type of travel you get up to over there.

Despite the expense of the islands in the south, Thailand remains an excellent value destination, especially outside of the aforementioned region. Can’t wait to get back next winter!

Yes Thailand, especially in the north around Chang Mai is still good value. Maybe i should have made a “Top 15” list and added more countries!

Mongolia is cheap if you have the time. I know people that hitch-hiked everywhere, including into the remote regions where mostly tours go! If you’re short on time then is more of a problem. And yeah I loved my time in Iran in 2012. Was thinking I may need to expand this list to “top 15” !! 🙂

Nice list Jonny! Just what I need after almost a year in Australia. I’ve done it on the cheap here which I guess comes down to ones travel style. Hitchhiking with tent, eating cheap, using online resources for free accommodation. I think that what’s important for people to consider in any country and as you rightly mention, it’s about how you stretch your budget and tackle the temptations. All the best!

Yep! I did Scandinavia on $10 a day doing just that. This list was for countries that are so dirt cheap you can get around without looking to camp or free place to stay and will still be sooooo cheap 🙂 There are other countries I should add to this list as well. Or maybe I’ll just do another one hahaha. Safe travels.

I been to all the countries on that list except Bolivia, I went to Pakistan last year, absolutely amazing country, and I felt 100% safe all the time, but one country that´s even cheaper than Pakistan is Bangladesh.

And Nepal is not dirt cheap anymore, I been there 7 times over the years, Nepal was dirt cheap up to last year, but I went back again earlier this year and the prices have skyrocket there.

Glad to see Malawi on your list! It has been on my radar for a few years now, but I was never sure how expensive or cheap it was given its location within Africa. I’ll have to put this one on my “Top 10” list now.

Are Armenia and Georgia almost as cheap as the above 11 countries? And where’s Vietnam?

Armenia and Georgia are cheap to travel. I am trying to keep the list to “10” countries and tried to do it so it represents different parts of the world, so hopefully one of them wouldn’t be to far from someone maybe wanting to visit.

How would a person get the information to stay with locals? Or in the yurts, like mentioned in Kyrgyzstan, for example? I love visiting places and getting the local experience as compared to doing the very touristy things.

All these places would be fine for a couple. I would say what is it more that you would like out of your holiday and what time of year? What time of year is important obviously because some things you would be restricted to doing. How long would you have? Then I can narrow down my recommendation. For example if you want somewhere in July/August/September and love hiking and culture then Kyrgyzstan would be perfect, but freezing in winter!

im from karachi and take offence when u said its “not a great city anyway”. its the cheapest city for tourism in the whole of Asia also if u tell anyone you are a tourist by tradition you are treated like a guest, given free lodging, dinner and hosted by locals.

and its great for shopping considering all the sports good for professional sports players such as soccer, cricket and tennis as well as bags and dresses you buy from HnM and Zara are manufactured here u get the original goods for 3 dollars or less at local bazaars and sunday market.

and for only $400 you take a greenbus tour from karachi all the way through lahore and islamabad to the northern areas for river rafting, trekking and mountain hiking and its only possible if you are in karachi.

and the food is amazing, a mix of indian and middle eastern cuisine the flavors are unique and distinct where you can taste all the flavors from every corner of the country as its a metro city it has different cultures and flavours. from chapli kababs, live BBQ to unani and shushi u find everything here.

so bitch please. its the most non racist, more welcoming city in the country and tourists are treated more like respected family members than strangers.

Pakistan is among cheapest countries. u can have a flight from Karachi to Islamabad in 75-80$. Uber/careem available in all major cities. u can enjoy a variety of local food at a very low cost. weather hottest to coldest from south to north. Pak is attracted by tourists attracted by historical architecture. u can find signs of one of the most ancient civilizations(Moen Jo Daro and harappa). i wont recommend foreigners to stay in cheaper hotels. u can get a 4-5star hotel room in 150-200USD/night.

There maybe a lot of political reasons behind a metropolitan city that generates 70% of revenue for the whole country, being made that way by political forces. This may be a sensitive topic for the natives which you might know nothing about. The least you can do and should do being a writer, for the sake of manners if you were ever taught any, is to understand your reader’s sentiment, offer a polite apology and say that you didn’t mean offence but you unfortunately couldn’t find a lot of attractive things about their city but you’re open to change your views if you ever get a chance to learn more. That’s what people with an open mind and better communication skills do.

The 20 Cheapest Countries to Visit in the World in 2023

Long before I made money blogging , I was a super-budget backpacker. And finding the cheapest countries to visit in the world allowed me to start my journey to visit all 197 countries . I started my journey in cheaper regions, often on $5 to $10 a day. And, having been to EVERY country in the world, I feel like I’m in a good place to judge the cheapest countries to visit.

And we all know that traveling the world , learning about different cultures , visiting breathtaking places , eating wonderful food, and experiencing all sorts of amazing activities is one of the most rewarding things a person can do in their lifetime. But also traveling can be a very expensive undertaking. And those of you, like I was, on a limited budget are often looking for ways to explore on the cheap in order to extend our time on the road.

• How much does it cost to travel the world?

That’s the big question. How much DOES it cost to travel the world ? Somewhere between $10 a day and $5k a month!? Not very helpful I know. I spent $10k going from Cape Town to Cairo on a tight budget. But then I spent $20k running the North Pole Marathon , for just a couple of days! So it depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

But, for this blog post, we’ll assume you’re doing it on the cheap. Serious cheap. So how much then does it cost to visit the cheapest countries in the world? You can squeeze by on $500 a month.

Some people work as they move around. Either trying to pick up odd jobs on the road , like me teaching English. Or doing work exchanges for food and accommodation. Or working online . Others save up as much money as they can and do their best to stick to a strict budget. And many people do some combination of the two to be able to get as much out of a trip as possible. Travelers on a budget will always be on the lookout for the cheapest countries to visit and that’s where my list of cheapest countries to visit comes in.

So, we compiled a list of 20 of the cheapest countries to visit in the world so you can make your money stretch further and extend your travels while still seeing some of the most amazing places on the planet.

If you’re planning to travel in Europe and think it’s going to be mega expensive everywhere you go, think again. Eastern European countries are still of great value. And Bulgaria is one of the most affordable. It’s also a place that hasn’t yet been totally discovered by the masses so you might have a lot of the tourist attractions totally to yourself, depending on when you visit.

Travelers can usually find a bed in a dorm room for under $15 per night. And often quite a lot less than that. Also, food and alcohol here are also affordable. If you opt for Bulgarian cuisine, meals are often hearty with filling stews or grilled meat with sides. If you plan on taking public transport, staying in hostels, and cooking most of your own meals from food bought at the supermarket then thrifty travelers should be able to get by here on around $35 per day.

One of the best parts about Bulgaria for nature lovers with an adventurous streak is that wild camping is legal. This means that, if you’ve got the gear and are willing to venture into the countryside to pitch your tent, you could end up spending very little. Yet you still get to explore some of the most beautiful areas of the country while stretching your budget very far.

If you’re traveling north from Costa Rica, Nicaragua will be a pleasant surprise on your budget. Especially if you head to the less-visited east coast of the country. Here you’ll find sleepy towns and islands and pristine beaches to bum around on.

Small towns also line the west coast and it’s a great place to chill out, go slow, and spend very little money while soaking up surf culture. Places like this really allow a traveler’s budget to stretch because the beach is free. And people who are content to chill on the ocean with a good book will really be able to make their money go far. With volcanos and hike s plenty you won’t be bored.

If you aim to eat in small local places, buy a lot of your food at grocery stores, and stay in hostels then visitors can spend as little as $35 per day here. You can find a bed in a dorm room outside of Managua for under $10 per night. And you can expect to pay a bit more for everything in the capital city. Simple meals can be found very cheaply at simple local restaurants for less than $5. The bus network might not be the most comfortable experience. But it covers most of the country and it’s cheap. And can be fun for those with an adventurous spirit. Bus trips won’t often cost more than $5, even for long journeys.

The Philippines is slightly more expensive than nearby Southeast Asian countries. But it’s still one of the cheapest countries to visit in the world. With some of the best deals around for travelers who can stick to a budget. You’ll need to pay a bit more to get there. But there are plenty of flights and you can usually find great deals. It’s worth the effort, though. Filipinos are warm and welcoming and there’s just so much to see and do.

Food in The Philippines is, unfortunately, nowhere near as amazing or as affordable as in other Southeast Asian countries. But it’s equally as cheap. Rice, noodles, and skewered meat dishes are plentiful and affordable. You should be able to eat for under $5 per day if you look for simple restaurants and for accommodation where breakfast is included.

You’ll find hostels all over the country of a good standard. And a bed in a dorm won’t usually cost more than $10 per night. The Philippines is a popular place for affordable diving courses. So if you plan on exploring underwater, make sure to add this to your daily budget.

Transportation costs in The Philippines can add up as you hop around the islands. And this is another island nation where it will benefit your budget to stick to one region. But many of the longer-distance ferries have bunks and you can save yourself a night on accommodation if you plan your travels well. There’s really nothing better than going to sleep at your starting point, waking up at your destination, and sometimes doing it for less than you’d spend on a night in a hotel or hostel!

This tiny Central American country is often overlooked when people are choosing a travel destination in the region. And it doesn’t attract the same numbers of tourists as other nearby countries. El Salvador has a sort of off-the-beaten-path appeal while still having so much to offer. And remaining incredibly affordable. Backpackers can easily get by here on under $30 per day if they stick to eating and drinking at local places.

Travelers can usually find a dorm bed in a hostel for under $10. And for folks who want a bit more privacy, guesthouses often have single rooms available for just a little more. Salvadoran food is simple. But very tasty. And you can pick up a snack from a street vendor for as little as $0.50. Make sure to try a pupusa (stuffed tortilla), El Salvador’s national dish because if you like them, you’ll be able to eat cheaply anywhere in the country. If you’d prefer a meal in a restaurant, you can eat for under $5 at local places.

If you want to maximize your time in the country while spending as little as possible, El Salvador is a great place to explore beach bum culture. Dropping off the radar for a while in any number of its amazing little beach towns and hanging out on the sand for free.

Honduras isn’t a hugely popular travel destination due to ongoing and ever-change safety and security concerns. It’s home to the most dangerous city in the world, San Pedro Sula. I was terrified when I stayed there, truth be told!

But for the intrepid traveler who makes sure to be aware of the current situation, this tiny Central American country has a lot to offer on the cheap. Just don’t go without proper travel insurance eh? Those who visit the country as backpackers should be able to travel here for around $35 per day. If they’re careful. This means eating local food, staying in hostels, and spending a bit more time outside of the capital city, Tegucigalpa.

You can find a single room in a simple hotel for under $15 per night. And you’ll pay less for a dorm bed in a hostel, though they’re not consistently found all over the country. Eating meals even at simple restaurants can add up but street food is, as always, an awesome way to save. You can get a baleada (a type of soft taco usually with beans, cheese, meat, and sour cream) for around $2. And they’re filling and delicious. A beer costs around $1.50 which isn’t the cheapest compared to other places, but it’s still a bargain!

Most people head north to the islands, it’s safer up there. I recommend you guys do the same.

Bolivia is one of the most affordable and most beautiful countries in South America which makes it a popular destination for budget travelers as they venture around the continent. There’s so much to see and do here. From visiting the surreal Uyuni salt flats to exploring La Paz to hanging out at Lake Titicaca to traversing the Death Road by bike or bus. So it’s good news that your money will go far in Bolivia!

Accommodation options are varied and affordable in Bolivia. You’ll find backpacker’s hostels all over the country and a bed in a dorm room will cost around $10 per night. You can often find doubles for around twice that price. So couples or friends sharing can take advantage of a bit more privacy without spending much more. Or for solo travelers who want a bit more comfort, single rooms at a budget hotel are sometimes only slightly more expensive than a dorm bed.

Bolivia is one country where eating out is so cheap that it often makes more sense than buying groceries and cooking for yourself. A set lunch and a beer in a simple restaurant will cost around $5. And even if you want to splash out on a nicer meal, you’ll rarely be paying more than $10 or $15. There’s so much to see and do in Bolivia. But activities are generally quite affordable with entrance fees to museums usually costing a few dollars, and short tours around $10. And even an organized tour to the Uyuni salt flats is only around $30.

Georgia is a country in the Caucasus region located on the Black Sea where Eastern Europe meets with Western Asia. And it’s not commonly on people’s travel lists. But it really should be. And like Pakistan below, it’s about to blow up in the travel world.

Not only is it a stunningly beautiful and interesting place. It’s also a lot more affordable than you might expect. Traveling into the region could be expensive depending on your starting point, but once you’re in Georgia, you’ll be surprised at the prices.

The budget travel scene isn’t quite as developed in Georgia as in other places but you can still find hostels with dorm rooms in the main cities and a bed can cost as little as $5 per night! Where hostels don’t exist, guesthouses do. And they’re incredibly popular and cheap with a single room costing around $15 and doubles $20. Guesthouses often offer filling meals for incredible prices so if you’re trying to save, make sure to take advantage of that.

Georgia is a large country with many things to see and do that will be great distances apart. If you’re hoping to see most of the country then transportation costs will add up. Luckily, those costs are quite affordable and most places are serviced by minibus. They leave when full (but are never overpacked) and the price depends on the length of the journey. As an idea, a 90-minute trip will cost less than $5. They’re not exactly luxury, but for what you pay they’re better than adequate. Within Tbilisi you can get around on a few dollars per day by using public transport and the occasional taxi.

Even Bali is an affordable place to visit. But if you venture away from the popular island to other parts of Indonesia, you’ll find even better deals!

Indonesia is a vast country of islands so if you want to visit and stick to a tight budget, your best bet is to choose a region to focus on. Bali is very far from Sumatra, for example, and trying to go everywhere will mean the costs of flights and boats will add up quickly. By sticking to visiting places that are relatively close together, travelers could get by here on around $30 per day.

Hostels are plentiful all over Indonesia and will rarely cost more than $10 for a bed in a dorm room. As a nation made up of over 6,000 inhabited islands (of 17,508 total) there’s plenty of opportunity here to find a beach to hang out on and that’s free! Don’t miss Komodo Island when you’re here too!

If you want to get way off the beaten path but still stick to a budget then Kyrgyzstan could be the country for you! This mountainous, landlocked country in Central Asia probably isn’t on most people’s ‘must visit’ lists. But it’s a unique place that it worth a look. And, as a bonus, it’s budget-friendly as well, especially if you head outside of the capital city Bishkek and into the stunning mountainous areas. The people are friendly. You can trek through some of the most beautiful and pristine parts of the world, witness ancient nomadic traditions, and so much more.

Guesthouses and homestays all over the country are affordable. But for the cheapest option you can find in cities is a bed in a dorm room for under $10 per night. If you’re into camping and trekking you can travel incredibly cheaply here during the summer months since free camping is allowed almost everywhere. Just be sure to bring cold-weather gear since, even in the summer, things will get chilly at night in this mountainous region. A large, filling meal at a restaurant serving simple local cuisine can be had for $5.

Plus the US State Department has Kyrgyzstan listed as a ‘Level 1’ country which means that they consider it to be one of the safest countries in the world. Along with places like Canada, Norway, and Singapore. So if you have any safety concerns about traveling to a place that you rarely hear about and seems quite mysterious – fear not!

Nepal seems like a very exotic and therefore expensive place but it’s actually one of the cheapest countries in the world to visit! Unless you’re going there to do some expensive mountaineering (like me climbing Mount Everest in 2023 ), Nepal is an amazing place for travelers who are on a budget.

Getting to Nepal itself could prove costly if you’re not overlapping. But once you’re there, you’ll find amazing bargains on accommodation, food, and local transport that will allow you to stretch our budget. Public transport by bus is very affordable. Even if you choose to take the larger, safer ‘tourist buses’ between cities. Rather than the smaller local buses which take longer and don’t have a great safety record.

Street food in Nepal is excellent. And if you acquire a taste for momos (a sort of local-style dumpling) you’ll eat cheaply everywhere. Even meals in restaurants are of great value a trip to Kathmandu .  A visa to enter Nepal will cost $50 for visitors from most countries.

According to statistics released by the Nepalese Tourism Agency, the average daily amount spent by tourists was $44 which means that plenty of travelers come to Nepal and get by on much less per day. This daily amount has actually fallen from $54 per day in 2017, much of which  is due to the weakness of the Nepali rupee as compared to the US dollar. Budget travelers who stay in hostels and eat local meals could expect to get by in Nepal on around $30 per day.

Also, trekking in Nepal doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, arranging a multi-day trek on your own can be one of the cheapest ways to spend time in the country. Like the Poon Hell trek or Gokyo trek . Or If you want a guide and a porter things start to get expensive. But for adventurous types willing to go it alone, you’ll be in nature spending very little each day. You will have to pay for a TIMS permit card for hiking which costs around $15 for individuals, depending on the exchange rate.

Sri Lanka is often overshadowed by its massive neighbor to the north, India, and overlooked as a destination except for the more intrepid travelers. This is a shame because Sri Lanka has so much to offer visitors ! It’s a relatively compact island nation where you can see a lot of things in a small space and, like India, it’s also a very cheap place to visit. Unfortunately, the cost to enter many of the main attractions will add up so if you’re planning on seeing all the sites on a cultural trip, you’ll want to take this into consideration. But if you’d rather explore nature and enjoy beach life and maybe try your hand at surfing, then Sri Lanka is a place where your money will go far.

Travelers can usually find a bed in a hostel for under $15 per night and food for the day is around the same price. You’ll find simple meals of roti, rice, curries, and more (make sure to try hoppers!) for under $4 per meal and often for even less. Transportation around Sri Lanka is incredibly affordable with many bus and train rides for as little as $1 or even less! Or you can race a tuktuk in Sri Lanka instead .

Vietnam is a fantastic country with an amazing coastline to explore, wonderful, bustling cities, and a wide array of activities and natural wonders. It will keep history buffs, beach bums, nature lovers, and foodies alike very happy.

One of the best things about being in Vietnam is pho! This delicious noodle soup is available everywhere and it’s crazy cheap at under $1 (depending on the ingredients) for a huge helping. Banh mi (a sort of Vietnamese meat and pickle sandwich) is also cheap and delicious and you’ll find lots of other options for amazing, affordable street food, too. Coffee lovers will be happy too because you can get an amazing cup for around $1. Hostel accommodation is a pretty good standard and you’ll find them all over the country. You can get a bed in a dorm for under $10 in cities like Hanoi or Phu Quoc .

Getting around Vietnam by bus is cheap but it can be time-consuming due to traffic. There’s a country-wide train network that’s around the same price as the bus but offers a calmer experience. Longer train journeys usually have the option for a bed in the sleeper section which is usually a comfortable way to get from A to B while also saving on a night’s accommodation.

8th. Cambodia – $25/day   

Southeast Asia as a whole is one of the cheapest regions of the world. And Cambodia is one of the most affordable places to visit within this region. It’s a wonderful place with a heartbreaking history, incredible temples, a fascinating culture, and friendly people and a visit here will stay with you for long into the future. Careful travelers should be able to get by on as little as $20 per day but make sure to budget extra for entrance fees to Angkor Wat and other temples and attractions.

While food is slightly more expensive in Cambodia than in neighboring Thailand or Vietnam , you can still eat for a few dollars from street vendors. And alcohol is incredibly cheap here, with local and backpacker bars offering beers for around $0.50. Transportation around the region and within the country itself are both affordable. And if you want to fly to Cambodia from elsewhere in the region, there are plenty of affordable budget airlines servicing Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Cambodia has some of the world’s cheapest accommodation if you’re open to staying in hostels, guesthouses, or homestays where you can find amazing deals. Homestays in rural areas can be had for $10 per night including food (and sometimes even less, depending how rural your destination is). Even though accommodation is already very affordable, if you travel in the low season between April to October, you can save even more. If you want to hang around in a place for longer, it’s also often possible to negotiate long stay discounts with your accommodation so Cambodia is an excellent country for digital nomad types who want to stay put for a while and enjoy what this amazing place has to offer.

African nations aren’t usually part of the ‘cheapest countries to visit’ conversation because of the great expense to get to the continent. The staggering cost of flights between countries, visa fees, and the need for expensive vaccinations are crazy. Plus, many African countries target wealthy tourists with five-star safari experiences and game drives. While mostly ignoring travelers on a budget. Ethiopia is one of the few African countries where you won’t need a massive budget and visitors can expect to pay around $25 per day if they plan carefully and travel overland.

And there are so many things to see in Ethiopia . The hyenas in Harar , Lalibela, the Blue Nile falls. And Ethiopian food is one of the most interesting and tasty international cuisines. And it’s available affordably all over the country. Especially if you’re in a group as it’s often a more communal experience. Vegans and vegetarians will love the food here. It’s a part of the Ethiopian Orthodox religion to observe vegan fasting days regularl. Where suitable dishes can be found easily and cheaply, usually for less than $3 per meal. Accommodation in a hostel dorm room will also be around $5 per night but it’s more common to find budget hotels that will be around twice the price for a private room and shared bathroom.

Ethiopia is a massive place. But internal flights with Ethiopian Airlines are surprisingly affordable and you can often find good deals, especially when you fly into the country with them. Adventurous budget travelers who prefer to save money by taking the bus will have long travel times. But the experience and money saved will make up for that! Beware that taxis within Addis Ababa are quite expensive but the local bus system covers most of the city, it’s safe, efficient, and actually, a fun way to get around.

Note. If you want to visit the Danakil Depression, that doesn’t come cheap !

Located in Southeast Asia, one of the cheapest regions in the world, Laos is likewise a very cheap place to visit. In fact, it’s probably one of the most affordable countries in the world. And budget travelers could realistically get by here on under $20 per day.

If you don’t mind places of questionable quality, a bed for the night can be had for just a few dollars a night. If you want something slightly more comfortable than dorm beds cost between $5 and $10 per night. And couples or friends sharing can often find private doubles for the same price as two dorm beds. Laos is a dream country for anyone who loves to sample local street food. Not only is it incredibly tasty with a vast selection of things to sample (be sure to try ‘sin dad’, a type of Laotian BBQ) it’s also mind-bogglingly cheap. It often found costing less than $2 for a meal.

Laos is a small country but getting around can be surprisingly time-consuming. Buses and boats will service most places very cheaply but you’ll need to be patient. Within cities, getting around on foot is free and enjoyable. Or for distances that are too far, you have tuk-tuks and taxis. Tuk-tuks will be cheaper. But always negotiate on the fare and it’s not uncommon to start at half of the asking price to see where it goes from there.

Laos often gets overlooked by travelers in favor of Thailand and Cambodia, but this little nation is definitely worth a stop and your wallet will thank you! Take note that the local currency, kip , can’t be exchanged outside of the country so be sure to trade in what you have before you depart.

India is one of the most interesting and diverse countries in the world and it’s long been popular with travelers, especially those who want to do things on the cheap. It’s one of those places where travelers will go to bum around the country, seeing as much and stretching their budgets as far as they can. It’s a huge place with so many different regions and a huge variety of experiences to offer that it’s the perfect place for wandering.

Luckily, India is still one of the cheapest countries in the world to visit, especially if you spend more of your time outside of the major cities and especially if you’re willing to haggle! If you want to make your dollars go as far as possible, you can’t be shy about bargaining over prices – it’s a part of the culture!

India is huge and prices will vary, but no matter where you are there will likely be an option for very cheap accommodation, sometimes for as little as $5 or less. But you get what you pay for and India could be a place where it might be worth stepping things up just a bit for accommodation. The same goes for food in India – Delhi Belly is real and food is affordable and delicious everywhere so perhaps going for the cheapest of the cheap isn’t always the wisest choice.

During my Cape Town to Cairo trip, I spent 2 weeks in Malawi in east Africa. And it blew me away. Most of the country borders their gorgeous lake, Lake Malawi. That means endless beaches, water activities, little chill beach towns and still very cheap prices.

If you check the 2nd photo below, you can see the menu. Here, a bean dinner cost $0.15! With guest houses for $5, and transport often including hopping on the back of trucks, Malawi is a difficult place to go over budget. $20 a day is more than impossible, even in 2023.

Cape McClear, Monkey Bay, and Lilongwe are all popular spots. Then you can hop on a ferry and cross into Tanzania. True travel, and on a tiny budget. The dream.

3rd. Moldova – $18/day

Without a doubt, the cheapest country to visit in Europe, and it’s a winning one at that. Moldova.

Moldova has been independent of the Soviet Union since 1991. However, there is a region in Moldova called ‘ Transnistria ‘ which modern Russia recognizes as a separate country. Almost no country recognizes Transnistria as one of the 197 countries in the world , but Russia maintains its presence because of it. With rumors of a potential invasion gathering pace since Ukraine.

Politics aside, Moldova is a great country to visit. With an endless supply of outdoor activities, from Caving to mountain biking, Moldova is a great spot for an active holiday. And if an active holiday isn’t what you’re after? Don’t worry, Chisinau, Moldova’s charming capital has a lot of wineries!

Pakistan is just waiting for its ‘Iceland’ or ‘India’ moment where it becomes an absolute staple of the travel world (much like The Faroe Islands tbh). What do i mean by that? I mean it’s beautiful, interesting, friendly, captivating and a true travel experience. Everyone should be flooding there. But with Islamophobia and negative media stories holding it back, it’s struggling to break through into the mainstream.

You can take advantage of that in 2 ways. One, you’ll have most of the country to yourself as a tourist. And two, it’s cheap. Like REALLY cheap. Like $0.50 for dinner cheap. $3 for a guest house cheap. Cheap. Cheap.

And it’s wonderful. From Islamabad to Karachi. And even more so in the northeast, the Gilgit Baltistan region is open of the most beautiful regions of the world. Go there before everyone else does!

The first country I ever truly traveled to, and therefore one very close to my heart. When I backpacked through Bangladesh , I spent $7 a day. Food, accommodation, transport, activities, everything!

Bangladesh is also one of the least visited countries in the world by Westerners. Historicaly the visa has been difficult, and there aren’t that many flights in and out of Dhaka from major airport hubs. However, that shouldn’t dissuade any would-be traveler.

Bangladesh is beautiful. From the longest beach in the world to the ancient Forts, there are some amazing tourist places in Bangladesh . And if you have the chance, be sure to hop on the traditional rocket steamer from Dhaka to Khulna . It was one of my favourite ever travel experiences.

If you don’t mind local guest houses, and local restaurants, you can easily travel around Bangladesh for $500 a month. In 2023, there aren’t many countries in the world you can say that for. In fact, it’s probably just Bangladesh, Pakistan and maybe Malawi.

Throughout my list of Cheapest Countries to Visit in the World, the daily budgets listed assume you’ll be traveling backpacker style. And of course eating mostly from grocery stores or street vendors, staying in hostels, and getting around by public transportation.

If you want to eat out, take taxis, or stay in nicer places then the budget will obviously go up but these countries are all still amazing bargains. And that’s even if you decide to treat yourself on occasion. Likewise, if you look for opportunities to Couchsurf, do work exchanges, camp, and hitchhike then you can reduce these costs even further.

Please note too that none of the daily budgets include things like flights, travel insurance,  souvenirs are included. Or for actually going on tours and excursions and paying entrance fees. So make sure to account for those before you plan your trip to any of these cheapest countries to visit. Still, they’re all as serious bargains regardless.

Also there is a difference between a country which is GREAT value (like Thailand). Where you can get 4* hotels for $50 or so. And a cheap country where a hotel may be $5, like in Bangladesh. But it’s not exactly luxury! So this list of the cheapst countries to visit is based on the ACTUAL CHEAPEST COUNTRIES TO VISIT. Not countries which are great value. I should write a separate blog post for that actually! Egypt, China, Malaysia, Morocco, Romania, Portugal, Estonia, Turkey. They’d all make that list!

There are many factors to consider when planning a vacation, from finding cheap places to travel and the safety of your intended destination to hotel options . But like it or not, there’s one thing that influences our travel decisions more than anything else: money. All those resort fees, plane tickets , and life-changing meals add up pretty quickly—so at the end of the day, we really want to prioritize places where our greenbacks have the most spending power.

We did a little digging to find the countries where the U.S. dollar goes the furthest, based on current exchange rates. And while our fickle global economy means those rates can change at any time, certain places have consistently offered more bang for our buck over the years—and, fingers crossed, they should stay that way well into 2024 .

Without further ado, here are 21 of the best cheap places to travel around the world.

Budapest, Hungary

1 USD = 351.21 HUF

Hungary’s favorable economy is great news for anyone planning a trip to Budapest , where a growing scene of Michelin-starred restaurants and high-tech spas are calling to us from across the globe. The city just celebrated its 150th anniversary in November 2023, which means there are even more reasons to visit during the next calendar year, including the newly reopened Chain Bridge and the brand-new House of Music Hungary . Be sure to book a room at the art deco W Budapest —formerly a palace and on a UNESCO World Heritage-listed street—which opened in July 2023 opposite the Hungarian State Opera.

South Korea

While other travelers head to the popular tourist destinations of Seoul , Busan, and Jeju Island, we have our eyes set on another South Korean city:  Mokpo , located in the Jeolla region at the southern tip of the peninsula. The port city offers some of the most interesting dining in the country, and specialty dishes like  hongeo (a naturally fermented, extremely pungent skate-fish dish) attract food lovers from around the world.

Mexico is consistently one of our favorite places to travel on a budget. In Mexico City , with a street food culture rivaled only by its forward-looking restaurant scene, you’ll be spending most of your money on eats. But make sure to leave some bucks to visit all the cultural wonders the city has to offer, starting with the iconic Museo Jumex . If you’re looking to go a little farther afield, head to Jalisco to see tequila being made at the source, or Isla Holbox for a sleepy beach scene.

We’ve long been fans of Mongolia for its seemingly limitless expanses and adventure camps—and the fact that travel here costs as little as $75 per day (including accommodations). The country is on a mission to lure even more travelers into its borders in 2024, with upcoming initiatives like its first-ever direct US flight and visa-free travel for dozens of nationalities. You can also expect even more offbeat cultural experiences next year: Local operator Breanna Wilson is expanding her 2024 tours to include a digital nomad week, a women-only retreat in Orkhon Valley, and a three-day archery training session.

Plenty of countries in Southeast Asia are great deals for dollar carriers right now, but we recommend a trip to Vietnam—in part because of the steadily increasing exchange rate, but mostly for the country’s mind-blowing beauty. Hanoi is arguably the most romantic city in the region, but don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten track during your next visit: Places like  Ninh Van Bay and Phú Quốc island have pristine beaches and intimate resorts you won’t find in the more touristed areas.

Like much of South America, Brazil is a good place to visit if you don’t want to break the bank. But the fact that a dollar gets you nearly five Brazilian reals means you can get even better value than usual. Rio de Janeiro is the most obvious place to spend time and money, with incredible restaurants—like  Lasai , a 2023 Hot List winner—just steps away from some of the world’s  best beaches . But don't forget to visit  São Paulo , too, where a younger generation has introduced hip galleries, museums, and bars to several long-neglected neighborhoods.

South Africa

1 USD = 18.30 ZAR

The value of the South African rand has fluctuated a lot over the past few years, but we’re pretty happy with where it is today. (To compare, one U.S. dollar only got you 8.57 ZAR 10 years ago.) Stretch those bucks on the  Test Kitchen ’s 21-course tasting menu in Cape Town , then head into the wilderness at  Singita Castleton Lodge in the Sabi Sand game reserve.

The Sri Lankan rupee has slowly gotten more and more favorable over the past couple of decades, but it completely skyrocketed starting a couple of years ago (a dollar converted to 200 SLR in February 2022, and now look where we are). We’re more excited than ever to explore this incredible island nation, where you can see leafy tea plantations, Buddhist temples, golden beaches, and 200-mile hiking trails in one memorable trip.

The Costa Rican colón has depreciated a bit in recent months, but it remains favorable for US travelers. Then there’s the fact that the country’s best asset (i.e. its natural beauty) is mostly free to enjoy. From trekking through the tropical cloud forests in the mountains of Alajuela to surfing off the coast of Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica is one of the world’s best countries for outdoor adventure. (And the  hotels are pretty great , too.)

Philippines

1 USD = 55.89 PHP

We’re never not dreaming about island hopping in the Phillippines. It’s hard to believe that places like Palawan and Siargao are so economically accessible, given that they are some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Even five-star resorts like  Shangri-La Boracay can be reserved for under $350 per night, which is all the incentive we need to book a trip right now.

For your next tropical island vacation, skip pricey, popular locations like the Maldives and Bora Bora for inexpensive Madagascar—an Indian Ocean treasure filled with breathtaking rainforests and lemur-filled national parks. Plan your visit around the opening of Namoroka Tsingy Exploration Camp ( scheduled for mid-2024 ), which will feature seven luxury safari tents inside the essentially unvisited Namoroka National Park. Alternately, swing by the island nation as part of a cruise itinerary: Luxe cruise lines like Silversea , Lindblad , Swan Hellenic , and Seabourne have all added the country as a port of call on new voyages.

Following in the footsteps of pharaohs in Egypt feels like it should be expensive, but the Egyptian pound has skyrocketed this year—that means touring the Pyramids, cruising the Nile, and exploring Cairo has never been more affordable. We’re excited to check out relatively new openings, like St. Regis Cairo and the beach villas at Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria . And we’ve been anxiously awaiting the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum for years now, but it looks like it might actually happen in 2024.

Your cash will stretch far in Malaysia, especially if you fill up on street food and explore cities like Kuala Lumpur on foot. It’s also inexpensive (or in some cases, free) to visit the country’s pristine beaches, limestone caves, and some of the most beautiful tea plantations. If you’re ready and willing to shell out the big bucks, however, we highly recommend shacking up at  The Datai Langkawi —it’s definitely expensive but wholly worth it.

India has always been a cheap travel destination; now that you can get 83 rupees to the dollar, however, the country is more affordable than ever. Hotels run the gamut from $60-per-night bungalows to pricy Oberoi and Six Senses outposts, plus hundreds of options in between. But as long as you don’t hole up in your resort the entire time, you can visit plenty of attractions and dine at local restaurants on an extremely tight budget.

Belgrade continues to emerge as one of Europe’s most exciting cultural epicenters, but it’s massively less expensive than, say, Paris or Berlin (at least for now). It’s relatively easy to find hotels under $100, though accommodations aren’t all that important when you spend all night dancing in clubs around the city. But you will want to get some rest to explore Belgrade’s wealth of museums and contemporary art installations, many of which just opened in the  past few years .

Perhaps it’s because the coastal countries get all the attention, but North Macedonia remains one of the most  criminally underrated (and therefore affordable) countries in Europe. The landlocked nation is a sleeper hit for those in the know, especially if you head to the charming city of Ohrid. It has all the cobbled streets and quaint churches one would expect from a European town, with the added advantage of being right on the shores of the incredibly gorgeous and biodiverse Lake Ohrid.

Nepal is one of the cheapest countries to visit for all travelers, but the U.S. dollar is particularly strong there right now. Most people immediately associate Nepal with Mt. Everest, but the tiny nation has much more to offer than bucket-list climbs. Kathmandu is overwhelming at first, but it hides some great hotels and museums once you start digging. Bhaktapur and Patan—both close by in the Kathmandu Valley—are a bit more low-key but still packed with culture.

It may be continental Africa’s smallest country but don’t you dare overlook the Gambia . The ultra-affordable nation has long been a coveted spot for wildlife enthusiasts, but it’s starting to rise in the ranks as both a  food destination and luxury cruise  port of call .

Despite the post- Eat, Pray, Love influx of tourists, Indonesia remains an affordable vacation spot overall. While millions of people flock to Bali (where resort prices are steep in response), you can enjoy a much cheaper and more peaceful trip on  the islands of Sumba and Lombok. And don’t forget about Jakarta, where a solid day includes filling up on greasy noodles and  nasi goreng gila  from makeshift street stalls—all for just a couple of US bucks.

Albania is much less expensive than other European countries—and it’s a bit under the radar as a tourist destination, which means there’s still a chance to visit before the word gets out and the crowds descend. One of the most enticing reasons to plan a trip is the food: Picture tables filled with rosemary-scented lamb, tart mountain cheeses, blackened sea bass, and bottles of fruit juices. In Tirana, book a stay at Agroturizëm Gjepali , a restaurant turned hotel with river views and doubles starting at just $70.

Uzbekistan is still on the up-and-up when it comes to foreign travel, which makes it one of the most exciting and affordable destinations in Central Asia. The major cities are filled with both intricate mosques and brutalist monuments—all free to explore—and you’ll be hard-pressed to spend more than $5 per meal at restaurants. There aren’t too many name-brand hotels set up yet, but even places like the Hyatt Regency Tashkent have nightly rates below $170.

Despite the effects of inflation on everything from eggs to electric cars , there are many places where your dollar will work in your favor, getting you an exotic trip for less than you might expect.

Our ranking is based on the average total daily cost you might pay once you reach your destination, and shows the daily prices for accommodation and food for one person. Obviously, the missing element is the cost of airfare, but flight costs vary so much depending on the time of year you're traveling, and where you're flying from, and to, that it's not helpful to factor those into our selection. Only a two-hour flight from Miami and less than four hours from New York City, Americans are frequent visitors to this sunny, year-round Caribbean destination. Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic makes up half of the second-largest island in the Caribbean (Hispaniola), French-speaking Haiti makes up the western half. With white sand beaches, lagoons, and rainforests, there’s plenty to explore while enjoying the natural beauty of the country.

America’s neighbor Mexico is home to the fifth largest city in the world . Not only does Mexico have several urban oases, but the North American country is also known for its beautiful beaches that are regularly listed as some of the best in the world. 5. Costa Rica

With fresh food and fruit in abundance, you can truly enjoy the “pura vida.” Just recently, a new study named Costa Rica as the best country to retire in 2024 .

At the crossroads of Europe , Hungary has managed to keep its quaint villages, while Budapest — the “city of lights” — still reigns as a metropolitan center. 12. Bulgaria

Many people don’t think of Europe as a super cheap place to visit . Scandinavia is extremely expensive, and most of Western Europe is quite pricey as well. But eastern Europe is often just as cheap as Central America or Southeast Asia. 

Bulgaria is actually one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe. It’s not very touristy, so the locals are extremely welcoming. 

In Sofia, the Bulgarian capital city, locals host daily free walking tours for tourists so they can teach you all about their culture and history. 

Hostels in Bulgaria cost around 5-9 USD per night, and you can treat yourself to an amazing meal at a nice restaurant for less than 20 USD. Bulgaria has lots of amazing historical architecture as well as natural beauty, so I think it should be on more people’s European travel bucket list.

For history lovers, Poland is a great place to visit. Full of museums and historical sights, you most likely won’t have to pay more than 5 or 10 USD to enter some of the country’s most popular attractions. 

Poland is also home to lots of colorful, photogenic architecture, which you can obviously admire and photograph for free. 

Big plates of hearty local food usually cost less than 10 USD, and hostels generally cost around 8-10 USD. Poland has all the delicious food and amazing sights of western European countries but without the high prices and the swarms of tourists.

14. Romania

And finally, another cheapest country to visit in Europe is Romania. Not to use a cliche, but Romania is truly a hidden gem of Europe. 

It is a beautiful country with so many cool things to see, but it has very few tourists and it is extremely cheap. A highlight of the country is the Transylvania region , which is home to numerous impressive castles and lots of quaint, charming, colorful villages. 

You can also visit Romania to explore the wilderness, including the majestic Carpathian Mountains and the beaches bordering the Black Sea. 

Traveling on a budget through Romania means you’ll probably spend only 30-40 USD per day, so it’s one of the cheapest foreign countries to visit in Europe.

There are many tourist attractions in the Philippines that offers free entrance, public beaches, park, hiking spots, and many more. The Philippines deserve to be listed here. For now, I don't know an establishment or organization that offers and connects volunteers offering opportunities to work in exchange for accommodation and other benefits. Thank you.

A country's cost of living is determined by comparing local prices of basic goods and services to those in a baseline location, such as New York City; however, methodologies vary among organizations.

Three countries that appear on all three different organizations’ lists of the least expensive countries to live in are Egypt, Nepal, and India.

The cost of living is the amount of money needed to sustain a certain comfort level in a location. The cost of living covers such basics as housing, groceries, taxes, and healthcare. Some countries have a very high cost of living , particularly in areas surrounding large cities.

For example, in the United States , cities like New York and San Francisco have a very high cost of living, while such areas as rural Mississippi , Kansas , or Oklahoma may be notably more affordable . Some nations have a very low cost of living, which can make them attractive destinations for expats, retirees, and others interested in reducing their expenses.

As a rule, cost of living computations start by recording the cost of various needs, from rent/mortgage and health care to a loaf of bread, in a given city. Those costs are then compared to the price of the same necessities in a baseline location, such as New York City , U.S.A. or Prague in the Czech Republic . Finally, the numbers for each region in a given country are averaged to enable nation-to-nation comparisons.

When you’re talking about the cheapest countries to visit, there are three crucial things to consider. You need to take into account the cost of airfare from your home airport, the cost of accommodations, and the general cost of living at the destination. Generally speaking, the second two tend to go hand in hand, and for some destinations (like Mexico ) many travelers may opt for all-inclusive resort stays.

Finding cheap flights to different countries

Since the United States is an incredibly large country, airfare to specific destinations can vary widely based on your region and local airport. For instance, you may find super cheap flight deals from Miami to the Caribbean or from Seattle to Vancouver but not vice versa.

A good way to help narrow down low airfare costs from your home airport is to use online search tools like Google Flights or Skyscanner . With Skyscanner, you can enter your home airport and enter ‘Everywhere’ as the destination. This will show you the cheapest flights to other countries during your travel dates. Google Flights allows you to view a world map with the flight prices from your home airport to different cities around the world. Try entering ‘Europe’ or ‘South America’ as the destination to get started.

Cheapest countries to visit

Istanbul’s airport is a major hub which means you can often find cheap flights from across the United States. Once you arrive, you have your choice of cities, beaches, and incredible nature destinations to explore. Watch the hot air balloons rise with the sun in Cappadocia or wander the seaside city of Antalya.

🪪 How to get a visa for visiting Pakistan

Before May 2019 – Getting a visa on the road was not possible, but you could only get it from your home country or country of residence. 

After May 2019 – They have finally introduced an e-visa system and up to 176 nationalities can now apply for a Pakistani visa online.

How to apply for a Pakistani e-visa 

You can apply through this portal .

Things you need to know about the e-visa:

Visa length – Officially, you can get a visa for up to 3 months. The application says that you can get up to 12 months but so far, there aren’t any reports from tourists who have been able to get one. 

Multi-entry – You can also apply for a multi-entry visa valid for up to 1 year.

Price – I believe it depends on nationality and the length of your trip, but I hold a Spanish passport and a single entry 2-month visa cost me 35USD. Then, I tried to apply for a multi-entry visa and it cost 52USD. 

Timing – The application says the process may take up to 7 days but it also may depend on your embassy. One traveler claimed that he got it in one day, while others say it takes several days. It is recommended to apply in advance. 

Letter of Invitation – For most nationalities, an LOI is required for the visa application. Alternatively, the system also allows you to upload a hotel booking confirmation (instead of the LOI) but usually, they will reject it and tell you to upload an LOI, which you should get through a local tour operator.

After submitting your application, your embassy has the right to call you for an interview, which means that you would need to be in your home country. However, this only happens in rare cases.

How to make a visa extension

Would you like to spend more time in Pakistan? No problem.

Extending your visa while traveling in Pakistan used to be a confusing process, as everybody has different experiences and rules were constantly changing but, finally, you can get your visa extension through the regular e-visa portal, as long as you are already in Pakistan and in possession of an e-visa. 

If you traveled to Pakistan with a regular visa, you can only extend it at the passport office of any major city, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Chitral, Gilgit, and Skardu but, apparently, the easiest place is Lahore.

⛅ Best time to visit Pakistan

Pakistan has many different regions, ranging from sea-level, flat deserts to 8,000-meter peaks, so each season will present its own peculiarities.

Winter (mid-November to February)

The best time to visit the south part of the country, especially Sindh province. Those lands may not have the mountains Pakistan is famous for but this is the most religiously diverse region in Pakistan.

On the other hand, most mountains in northern Pakistan remain totally inaccessible in the wintertime. You can still get to the Northern Areas through the Karakoram Highway , but you won’t be able to visit any side valley.

Summer (June to September)

The best season for visiting the Northern Areas, especially if you like trekking in high altitude mountains.

Spring & Autumn

I personally traveled to Pakistan in April and May and the mountains were at their best, as the weather was gorgeous (most days), plus they weren’t busy with domestic tourism. However, if you travel to Pakistan in early spring, late autumn, the mountains may not be that accessible.

📰 What’s it like to travel in Pakistan today

Before 9/11, Pakistan used to be a tourist country. 

Well, not that touristic, but its breathtaking mountains were a popular stopover for backpackers going along the famous Hippie Trail .

In fact, in the Northern Areas, you can find a few backpacker hostels which somehow, are the remains of what used to be a popular destination for intrepid backpackers. 

The 9/11 attacks, however, along with a big bunch of unfortunate events, usually involving Taliban activity and loads of violence, put an end to the emerging tourism industry.

Fortunately, things have changed. 

In the last couple of years, the security situation in Pakistan has dramatically improved and the Northern Areas of Pakistan are, once again, filled with intrepid backpackers who want to visit some of the most jaw-dropping mountain scenery you will ever see, and experience the hospitality Pakistan is famous for. 

Nevertheless, despite this massive tourism increase, Pakistan still remains raw, authentic, and genuine, and it will stay like that for a very long time, especially because it is not an easy country to travel to: tourist infrastructure is in an embryonic stage, it is difficult to move around and you won’t meet many foreigners, so that’s why I personally believe that only experienced travelers should go to Pakistan. 

However, traveling in Pakistan is one of the most rewarding traveling experiences one can ever have.

🕌 Cultural behavior and facts when traveling in Pakistan

Urdu, which is like hindi, is the official language.

However, each region has its own (or several) local languages, so different from each other. English is widely spoken among educated people, like in India.

Pakistan is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse countries

From the South Asian-looking people of Punjab and Sindh; to the people of the Pashtun areas, closer to Iran or Afghanistan; the pagan culture of Kalash; the Shias from Gilgit and Nagar; the Ismailis of lower Hunza and the Wakhis (and also Ismailis) of upper Hunza. Traveling in Pakistan is like traveling in several, different tiny countries. It’s fascinating.

Remember, you are the guest

People tend to say that, in Iran , Sudan and Iraqi Kurdistan , you find the most hospitable people in the world. Well, clearly, they haven’t visited Pakistan. Whereas it’s true that these countries are very hospitable, Pakistanis bring it to the next level. In this country, you are the guest, which means that the locals strive for you to have the best possible time in their country or region.

The hospitality can even be overwhelming

During your trip to Pakistan, you’ll be invited for lunch, dinner and even to stay at people’s houses so many times that, on many occasions, you will have to refuse.

After your refusal, they will insist once again, over and over. They will also insist on carrying your bag and offering you food one hundred times even if you say that you are full. These are their cultural rules and you are the guest.

So overwhelming but just don’t get angry

One day, some random men who I had never seen before came to my hotel at 7:30 am in the morning, knocking at the door of my room, waking me up from a very good sleep.

Apparently, they heard that there was a foreigner in the village, so they just wanted to hang out with me. I got a little bit angry, continued sleeping but then I kind of felt bad, as all they wanted was to show me around the village.

Paying for meals

For some reason, Pakistanis always want to pay for your meals to the extent that it gets awkward. I personally didn’t like it, especially when I could see that the local people didn’t have much money. If possible, try to back them up.

Wearing a Shalwar Kameez

The traditional Pakistani dress, which 80% or 90% of Pakistanis wear, is called shalwar kameez. Should you wear it? It’s not compulsory but, if you do, the locals will really appreciate it, especially in the Pashtun areas.

Pakistan is the most conservative country I’ve ever been to. You should be careful and always respect their rules. If you do, they will also respect you and you will have the best time in their country.

⚠️ Security and safety when you travel in Pakistan

Pakistan is not dangerous but you should be cautious..

You might have read from other blogs that Pakistan is one of the safest countries in the world . Personally, I wouldn’t say that. Whereas I think that Pakistan is not a dangerous country, in some areas, it’s better to be cautious, especially in the region bordering Afghanistan.

Where are you going?  Unlike in other countries, in Pakistan, the police and military are pretty cool and, for your own security, they are commanded to ask you these questions.

You will have to register at more than 100 security check posts

I am not kidding. During my 56-day trip to Pakistan , I had to register more than 100 times at different army and police check posts. Sometimes, to get from one destination to another, I had to register more than 10 times! At each check post, you have to get off the car or bus and write down all your personal information in a notebook. This will slow down your journey considerably.

Bring one thousand passport & visa photocopies

It’s good to bring loads of photocopies because, at some check posts, if you have a passport copy, you don’t have to get out of the car. Otherwise, you are going to waste your time.

Occasionally, you get a personal guard, for free

Again, not kidding. For security purposes, in some areas, you will get a personal armed guard. Sometimes, you might have to pay for his meals but, according to the police, you are not forced to. It’s up to you. For more information, read my post: Is Pakistan safe?

Having a personal armed guard seems kind of cool but, to be honest, it’s not that much

The first time you get an armed guard you get kind of excited. However, after half an hour, you might start hating him because he will put you under a lot of restrictions.

Pakistani intelligence is one of the best secret services in the world

One of the reasons why Pakistan is not a dangerous country is thanks to the Pakistani intelligence, which is considered the best intelligence corps in the world, even better than the CIA.

Be aware that they are watching your steps and they will always know where you are. I remember that, while hiking around a remote area in the Astore Valley , a man wearing a salwar kameez (the traditional Pakistani clothes), came to me and said,  ”You are the Spanish, right? ” Yes, he was from Pakistani intelligence.

💃 Solo female travel in Pakistan

Women traveling solo is more common and safer than you think.

Women tell wonderful things about their experiences during their journeys through Pakistan, but they also say that this is a particularly challenging destination, home to a very conservative, patriarchal society who don’t really know how to deal with foreign women.

🛂 Bureaucracy and permits for your trip in Pakistan

Don’t trust any source of bureaucracy information, not even against the compass.

In Pakistan, rules are not written and things are constantly changing. Places that no longer require a permit, might require it overnight, by the next day it was changing it back again.

A military guy told me once that, when this happens, it’s because they are suspicious of some Taliban or terrorist activity.

This information doesn’t flow throughout the country, so you will see that everyone (including national police, local police, the Army, the locals, travelers, and blogs) will always have a different opinion. Don’t trust anyone. Check it yourself, once you’re on the ground.

In Pakistan everything is possible

If there is something valuable I learnt during my trip to Pakistan, it is that, as in any corrupt country, everything is possible and it all depends on your contacts. If you know the right people, you can do absolutely everything you want, including visiting forbidden areas without a permit.

What you need to know about NOC

• What is it? A No Objection Certificate, which is basically, a permit required for certain restricted areas.
• How to get? – The best way to get it is through a local with contacts. If you don’t know any local, contact your embassy, but it can take up to 4 or 5 working days to proceed. 
• When do you need it? – As I said before, don’t trust any source of bureaucracy information. During my trip to Pakistan, a friend of mine was required to get an NOC to use the road between Timargara and Chitral. One day later, I tried to use that road but the NOC was not required anymore. However, officially, you would need an NOC to visit Balochistan, the Khyber Pass, Tribal Areas and Kashmir (some areas of Kashmir).

💻 Internet and connectivity in Pakistan

Except in Gilgit-Baltistan, the internet works reasonably well throughout the country.

In the Northern Areas, the connectivity is awful or non-existent depending on where you go. 

I got a SIM Card from a Chinese company called ZONG which is supposed to be the best for pretty much anywhere in the country. In the Northern Areas, however, it barely worked and, apparently, you need to get a company named SCOM, which you can find in Gilgit, 

Pro-tip: Tell a local to get a SIM Card for you – The downside of ZONG is that, as a foreigner, you need to go to the central office and pay quite a lot of money to sign up for it (20 or 30USD). Tell a local to sign up for you, so you’ll just pay the local price and get it very quickly.

Get a VPN for traveling in Pakistan

You should always use a VPN when you travel, especially when you connect to public Wi-Fi networks.

Your connection will be much safer.

💰 Money in Pakistan

In Pakistan, they use the Pakistani Rupee (PKR) and approximately:

1USD = 262 PKR

Cash & ATMs – Pakistan is a cash economy, so better bring cash, especially in the Northern Areas, where. Of course, you can find ATMs in all big cities but not all of them will accept foreign cards.

How much does it cost to travel to Pakistan

But before, a few things you need to know:

• In Pakistan, everything is negotiable: Everything can be bargained for, especially the hotel rooms. Expect to pay different amounts from other guests.
• Always come with a reference: When you travel in Pakistan, contacts are very important and that’s why in either hotels or trekking tour companies if you come referenced by a local, you will get a better price.

In any case, this is a pretty cheap country and I think you can easily travel to Pakistan for less than 20 a day, sleeping in private rooms and eating 3 meals outside. These are the (approximate) prices of the most typical things:

• Local meal – 150PKR
• Local meal in a mid-range restaurant – 250-500PKR
• Meal in a fancy restaurant of Lahore – from 1500PKR
• Private room in a budget hotel – Up to 1500PKR
• Private room in a mid-range hotel – Around 3,000PKR
• Long bus rides (Islamabad to Gilgit) – Around 2,500PKR for a VIP ticket (you want to get a VIP, trust me)

🛺 Transportation for traveling around Pakistan

You’ll get used to the mountain roads –  Most mountain roads are very scary as they are extremely narrow and built on insanely high cliffs. Don’t panic. You’ll just get used to them!

You will learn to be patient – In absolutely almost every long bus journey I took, we had a breakdown. Sometimes, we were stopped for two hours! And one day, we stopped because the bus ran out of gas! Can you believe it?

Psychedelic trucks are a way of life – Everybody falls in love with the trucks in Pakistan, as they are so particularly decorated that they are a blessing to your lens.

Ways of moving around when you travel in Pakistan

Public buses & minivans go everywhere – Like in most developing countries where most people can’t afford to buy a car, buses and minivans travel to even the remotest areas in the country. In Sindh and Punjab provinces, Daewoo is the most luxury bus. For traveling to Gilgit from Islamabad, you should definitely take NATCO VIP Bus ( around 17USD). Don’t worry, is not that VIP.

Train – In Sindh, Punjab, and Peshawar, you can move around by train. There are different train companies but you should always take the private ones, as they are more punctual. Use AC standard, as it is the one used by the Pakistani middle class. It’s not expensive, not smelly and comfortable enough. For more information, check this train guide to Pakistan . 

Hitchhiking is too easy – It’s so easy, that sometimes, it’s faster and easier than taking public transport, especially on the Karakoram Highway (from Gilgit to Khunjerab Pass). Everybody will want to pick you up! As a general rule, on the KKH, I didn’t hitchhike on motorbikes (there are so many accidents) and cars with women inside.

Plane is pretty convenient – Traveling by bus from Islamabad to the northern areas, including Chitral, Gilgit and Skardu takes ages (from 15 to 20 hours). There are flights connecting Islamabad with all these cities. Book your flights here . Please note that, for flying to and from Gilgit, you must book several days (even weeks) in advance. Also, bear in mind that many flights get canceled due to the weather condition.

🍲 Food, drinks, and alcohol

Food is extremely oily.

Pakistanis love oil too much. They put tons of it in absolutely every meal, including in the steamed rice, which they will always fry afterwards. When you are in a restaurant, always ask for half fried.

It’s almost dry

In the Sindh province and Islamabad, you can find liquor stores. In the rest of the country, alcohol is only available on the black market, but most locals (who drink) can get it for you easily.

Expect to have ten cups of chai a day

Chai, which is tea with milk, is a way of life in Pakistan and a sign of hospitality.

Tap water, watch out!

Don’t dare drink tap water. In the northern part of the country, the locals will tell you that the tap water is good, as it comes from the mountains and glaciers. This may be true, but I still got sick when I drank from a mountain fountain. Always use a water purifier.

You’ll get sick

I don’t know anyone who didn’t get sick in his stomach when traveling in Pakistan. Try to avoid salad, food stalls with flies (they are hard to find) and don’t drink tap water.

🏨 Accommodation when you are traveling to Pakistan

There are all types of hotels across the country, from budget rooms to a few hostels and luxury hotels.

Booking sites such as Hostelworld and Booking.com are increasing in popularity but, depending on the destination you travel to, you may not find a lot of options or, at least, no budget hotels.

If you want to stay in a budget hotel or local guesthouse, you may have to read blogs or ask anyone online. In my Pakistan Itinerary , I give some options.

Anyway, there are a few things you need to know about accommodation in Pakistan:

Prices can be negotiated to the extreme

Whenever they tell you the price, ask if they have a cheaper room. Seriously, on many occasions, I managed to get half of the initial price.

If you are on a budget, always ask if they have a dorm

Surprisingly, many hotels have dorms and they don’t tell you until the end of the negotiation. The good thing is that, since there are not many backpackers, you are most likely to get the dorm just for yourself!

In most of Pakistan, you are covered

In Pakistan, there is a lot of domestic tourism, so most touristic areas are filled with hotels for absolutely every budget, from hostel to mid-range and luxury rooms.

But it may be harder to find decent accommodation in the rest of the country

In cities like Peshawar, Karachi, Multan, and basically anywhere outside of Swat Valley, Chitral, Northern areas, Islamabad and Lahore, finding decent (budget) accommodation may be challenging.

Couchsurfing is quite popular!

Hey man! hahaha, Let’s change ”best” by ”effective” if that makes things better 🙂 If it was not for the PK Intelligence, PK would have become a failed state, like Afghanistan. If, occasionally, they back up the Talibans, is always for their self-interest (for negotiations for example) not for supporting a terrorist group. All the country is pretty proud of this corp and I met a few agents who were always looking after me! But I am not an expert, so can’t say much more about it 😀 !

I wouldn’t doubt that they treated you well in Pakistan but you really need to do some homework on the subject: Pakistan, through the intelligence agency is one of, if not the biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world; it’s actions in Afghanistan have been one of the leading causes of making it a failed state and also the source of the blow back, causing terrorism in Pakistan, so they have done the complete opposite of making the country safer. haha, yeah, you said it very well. This country is nuts, mad, wild and surreal. That’s what all backpackers are continuously saying when you are in Pakistan!

Pakistan can be rock concert loud. Highly amplified mosque speakers blare out the call to prayers five times a day from every which way-the first one being at crack of dawn. This can disturb your sleep pattern. Then there are cars and trucks one-upping each other with incessant honking. Some commercial vehicles have bone jarring air horns. Celebratory gun fire can erupt at any hour for as simple a reason as a kid passing his exams. Imagine that AK47 going off at 2:00 AM!

I thing which I want to add is you traveled in the month of Ramdan (an Islamic month). In this month local tourist do not travel that is way you got cheap hotels. Otherwise expect 3 time more expensive hotels than you mentioned above.

It must be exciting to visit Pakistan, but that said, if you live there I don’t think you will think it’s so safe and exciting, especially if your a Minority, and not Muslim, your chances of being killed increase a thousand fold, even the local Muslims are not spared, your chances of being killed are at an extreme level, people live in fear. Pakistan is notorious for Terrorist activity. But that said life goes on. Did you know about the Majority Punjabi’s are suppressing the Baluchistan’s, do you know what the Pakistan Army and Government are doing to the Baluchistan’s, find out seriously before you say Pakistan is a very safe nation? True everyone will give you their spin, but the Pakistan Military is notorious for carrying out all the terrorist funding and operations, they are the ones who set up the Taliban in Afghanistan to destabilize the nation, safe and peaceful, are they? Pakistani Military is known to fund terrorist organizations like Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) that carry out a proxy war with India, and the famous Mumbai Terror attacks. Not less than 45 terrorist groups operate freely in Pakistan with the blessing of the Military and Police, this is how safe Pakistan is. As a tourist, you see the superficial skin and not the real vermin that lays beneath. I also visited Pakistan in 2017 and stayed there for 3 months. It’s a wonderful place in the world to visit. In my opinion everything is OK with piece, security, culture, respect and hospitality etc. The biggest misunderstanding about PK is that some anti-PK wants spread the roomers about terrorism through media etc. I thoroughly studied most of the aspects about PK and then practically realized by staying there. I was in Pakistan this past year (December/January). It was lovely. The most friendly, hospitable, and beautiful country I’ve ever been too. I will say I wish I knew where the liquor stores were in Islamabad…everyone I knew said the only way to get liquor was the embassy clubs and bootleggers. We ended up meeting a bootlegger which was not too much of a hassle. Islamabad might be the greenest city in the world. It was stunning. I also gained 8 lbs the first week I was there from eating and luckily never got sick from water or food the entire month I was there. Every other one of our friends got sick though at some point.

Hi Matt, I also heard that there are liquor stores in Islamabad. In fact, my Couchsurfing host (local Pakistani) had plenty of beers in his fridge and said he bought them in a beer shop in the city! I don’t know, that is what he said and I actually never saw it! Yes, Islamabad is the greenest city ever, slightly different from the way Homeland TV show portraits it, right? Lucky you, that you didn’t get sick. I got sick on 4 occasions, within a 2-month period. However, since then, after 1 year, I have never ever got sick anymore of my stomach. I think I went through a very hard training and now I am immune! Cheers mate!

Great points. Karachi is not a tourist destination hence tourism never was developed properly here. That’s is why hotels which are budget friendly are hard to find. However if you do travel there you must try crabbing on Karachi seaport with ‘Salem seafood crabbing’ he has the best boats and only $9 to $10 per person in a group of 10. And definitely check out Kolachi restaurant at do darya or go scuba diving at islands like churna etc. You can even go buggy wheeler riding or camel riding on sea view beach best time is at sunset coz rides have amazing fun lights on them. Or book a hut on beaches like French beach or sand spit beach. Go shopping in zainab market for jackets and jeans which are usually factory rejects from brands like Zara or HnM lol or Gulf for cloth like silks, jamawar and fake ethnic jewellery. And then a shopping trip to dolmen mall for trinkets and souveniers. Quaids mazar, mohatta palace,lyari, frere hall and Danzo zoo are some touristy places for checking historical/recreational places. Also when in Karachi do not forget to try the cupcakes from Delizia Bakery, fishNchips from OPTP and some Tea with Parathas from Chaiwala.

If we may add some points regarding safety, the country is indeed safe in some parts and unsafe in others (borders with Afghanistan, China, Iran; Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province; as well as certain parts of Balochistan, Islamabad and Karachi), so fellow travellers please do be careful.

Also, a new scam that surfaced in 2018 was that of spray painted fruits in Afzalpur, do be wary! Also, take care of your passport and valuables, and avoid “faith healers”. Other than that, enjoy your time Pakistan! 🙂

Ok, so in a few years I will be planning a trip to Pakistan most likely on my own. I will be going to meet a local, but I am not sure I understand the process of getting a visa for Pakistan. Any tips? Obviously I’m not in any rush, so anything will be useful and anything might change. And is there anything else that might be vital to me? It will be my first trip to Pakistan and my first time leaving my home country on my own.

Come to visit Pakistan but be sure to have a proper guide as Pakistan is a big country with wonderful and amazing places to visit. Not to forget but many cultures and different races live within Pakistan. All the provinces in Pakistan have some kind of special places to visit like for example in Sindh you will find old traditional places and civilizations ruins, In Punjab side you will get to see rivers flowing and greenery, In northern side (KPK and Gilgit Baltistan) you’d find some great peeks like k2, Nanga parbat and other amazing places but make sure to have a proper guide of hire some company to do so. National level tourism is on peak now adays as now Pakistan is ranked among the top for adventure loving.

Guys – let’s be grown ups. no more negativity! Being born in Lahore and brought up in London I love going back and seeing the changes in Pakistan. Also to clarify i have been to India (mostly Delhi and touristy surrounding cities) and loved it too. The last few years social media and the internet it has really moved Pakistan and surrounding countries on, mostly for the better. In Pakistan I notice for instance that many more younger people speak English – I think it has become a necessity if you want to conduct your life on social media! There is also a better understanding and people over the borders are making friends with each other using these mediums and realising that the politicians are the puppeteers. Being in a privileged position of living in a third country (although London is home) I am so lucky to have friends from around the world and it is obvious that it is not the people who have problems with each other but the governments and those who buy the weapons and keep the armed forces in a strong position where so much of the GDP is used. Just enjoy the country and hopefully all your encounters will be positive ones. you can be in danger anywhere – just keep your wits about you and if you have any doubts then stay out of that situation. I am off to Pakistan on my now annual visitation in a few days and really looking forward to it.

pakistni visa is now available on arrival. kindly please update. its available on arrival for 175 countries effective from february 2019.

Pakistani visa is not available on arrival. They said that visa was available on arrival for those who booked a full tour, but apparently, not many people succeeded with that because they never published the list of authorised tour operators. What they did is introducing an e-visa system but you still need a Letter of Invitation. Basically, the only difference versus before is that now you don’t need to apply in your home country but you can do it online, but requirements are pretty much the same. However, I don’t know anyone who has tried it yet and since in Pakistan they always talk about new visa policies which tend to be BS, I prefer update to update it until the info is verified

The evisa begins next month, in June. Till then no one really knows how it will work. But news reports so far say no LOI will be required

As you enumerate months (mid-April to mid-October) to travel in Pakistan. Here I want to meddle for those who have aversion for summer season as allergic issues perturb them. More common symptoms are rashes, hives and itching on skin. Choose right clothes while travelling in hot and sunny weather. I suggest to purchase from local market rather than pack so much costumes because local market knows better the weather and design fabric accordingly.

The new government of Imran Khan has done away with the requirement of NOC for traveling to restricted areas, except for only a handful of places. Another thing i would like to mention is that the online visa platform, still in its infancy, is being improved with each day by incorporating feedback/suggestions from Pakistan embassies around the world as well as the local agencies.

I was considering the idea of fasting with the locals. My only concern would be strenuous hiking without water. You were there during Ramadan, yeah? Any advice?

Hi Sean. Just curious but, why do you want to fast with the locals? I mean, you can do it if you want, but don’t think that the locals will expect you to do it. Also, Muslim people are allowed to stop fasting when they travel, for the simple reason that fasting & traveling is a real struggle. Yes, I was there during Ramadan but only during the first week which I spent in Hunza area, and in that area, since they are Ismailis, they are pretty relaxed and most restaurants were open.

I have been planning on travelling to Pakistan again next year once this global epidemic comes under control. I went there last October 2019 and was truly amazed by the country’s beauty, its people and the incredible amount of love/hospitality I was shown. Definitely recommend Lahore, Islamabad, Swat and the Northern Areas (Baltistan, Gilgit and Deosai). I sure felt a lot safer than many of the other surrounding countries and I felt the country was a lot more cleaner with better infrastructure than many of its neighbours I had previously visited. Thanks for the article as it offered some helpful pointers but luckily I didn’t have any issues with my stomach and I was there for around 2 weeks. Looking forward to travelling to this hidden gem of a country Pakistan again!

The bus takes 15 to 20 hours Renting a car would be amazing, but it’s more expensive of course

Bus takes 16 to 18 hours and charges 15$ whereas renting a car costs you 40$ to 50$ per day (without fuel). And the fuel it takes for islamabad to gilgit is around 25 gallons costs 60$.

Regarding Kashmir – I’ve seen some youtube videos of a New Zealander (Karl Rocks) who’s blogged from the capital of Azad Kashmir, so the restrictions may have been removed. I’d definetly recommend adding AK (at least the northern parts) to your itentary – as it’s not too far from Islamabad.

Hello fellow travellers. I have just applied for an e-visa through the Nadra site. After a simple but painstaking series of questions you arrive at the penultimate stage of uploading your photo , passport details and …. a Letter of Invitation. I am a UK citizen . I have purchased an LOI with an extra attested certification from Karakoram Bikers who were very helpful and who’s info I used in the Sponsor’s section of the application. I thought LOI’s were a thing of the past but either the website hasn’t been updated or LOI’s are needed for some nations. I await the outcome of my application. I applied for my visa in July 2023 and it took 2 months to process, so be warned.

As of July 2023, non vaccinated travellers (COVID) no longer are required to have PCR tests to enter the country. My understanding is that The airlines may not be aware of this change of rule, so bring documentation to prove this.
