GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS TOURS

Travel into nature’s workshop.

Snorkel with sea lions, soak up the sun with iguanas or marvel at the natural beauty that surrounds you – just a typical day on a Galápagos tour! Situated 965km (600 mi) off the coast of Ecuador, this isolated haven of biodiversity remains nature’s greatest science laboratory, home to a dazzling array of birds, reptiles, fish and mammals that you won’t find anywhere else. Small Group Tours and Founders Safaris

While almost all our Safaris are bespoke, and tailored to accommodate our guests’ interests and dates, we do organize the occasional small group tour with fixed departure dates and itineraries.

These Small Group Safaris offer great value and are a wonderful way to discover the islands and meet other wildlife enthusiasts, while still having the space and freedom of the Camp to indulge in some ‘me time’ at the end of each day, if and when required.

Upcoming Galapagos Small Group Tours

To view upcoming Galapagos Small Group Tours, including our Founders-led Safaris , please refer to the tabs below.

Founders’ Safari

Led by the Camp’s co-founders, Stephanie and Michael Mesdag, along with one of our expert naturalist guides, our exclusive Founders’ Safari is designed for a group of up to 16 guests.

Combining elements of our signature Classic and Family Safaris, this wildlife adventure includes one excursion to an uninhabited island, one fishing and snorkeling experience and various tours on Santa Cruz Island. Additionally, it provides the added opportunity to learn firsthand about the founders’ story, their motivation for creating the Camp and how their deep love and appreciation for the islands continue to inspire their ongoing efforts.

The Founders Safari is held annually, with upcoming tours scheduled for November 2024 and November 2025.

SECURE YOUR SPOT ON THE FOUNDERS’ SAFARI

SANTA CRUZ HIGHLANDS AND THE GIANT TORTOISE

Welcome to the Galapagos! After leaving the VIP airport lounge you will meet your bilingual naturalist guide who will be with you for the duration of your stay with us (according to the level of privacy chosen).

To maximize your first day in the Galapagos Islands, you will be taken to a number of visiting sites on the way to Galapagos Safari Camp.

The first stop is Los Gemelos (The Twin Craters); two colossal, volcanic sinkholes. On a gentle hike around the rim, your guide will point out the birds of the endemic Scalesia forest such as Galapagos doves and Darwin’s finches.

From Los Gemelos you continue to a reserve for giant tortoises. Your tour of the reserve will follow a gentle circuit trail where you get within meters of these iconic Galapagos creatures. Keep a look out too for short-eared owls, as they are occasionally spotted in the trees. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

The tortoise reserve also contains a network of underground lava tubes, formed centuries ago when lava flows cooled at the edges but kept flowing in the middle, leaving cave-like tunnels in their wake. To fully appreciate the uniqueness of the Galapagos Islands, and its wildlife, it’s important to first understand the archipelago’s geology and volcanic history.

End the day at Galapagos Safari Camp, enjoying uninterrupted views of the National Park and the shimmering blues of the Pacific Ocean, without another human in sight.

EXPLORE NORTH SEYMOUR ISLAND

Sat just north of Baltra (the airport) Island, North Seymour is one of the closest uninhabited islands to Santa Cruz and easy to reach by boat. What makes this small island so special is its populations of birds. Your tour follows a flat trail around the western side of the island, cutting through a forest of Dwarf Palo Santo trees and past nesting colonies of boobies and frigates.

Both birds are known for their curious courtship rituals; with the blue-footed boobies performing a little ‘dance’ and the male frigatebirds inflating their scarlet gular pouches. (Breeding is opportunistic and can take place at any time of year, usually when there is an abundant food supply). Land iguanas also frequent the area and sea lions are often seen snoozing under rocks on the final stretch of the trail.

Snorkelling is offered in the waters surrounding North Seymour. (Note: if the sea is too rough, the snorkelling will take place at Bachas beach instead).

Lunch is served on board the boat during the navigation to Bachas beach, on the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island. This pristine stretch of white sand is only accessible by sea and is a nesting ground for Galapagos green turtles during the breeding season (Mating usually takes place in November and December. The females come ashore to lay their eggs at night from December to June, and the eggs incubate for about 60 days. To avoid being eaten, the hatchlings usually make their dash to the water at night).

Your visit begins with a guided tour along the beach to a brackish lagoon where flamingoes are sometimes spotted. Look out for the partially hidden remnants of a WWII barge ship, left behind by the American army.

After your tour, you can explore the shallow, warm waters of Bachas bay, before the return boat ride to Itabaca Channel.

Evening at Galapagos Safari Camp

SANTA CRUZ: THE EAST

Your Safari will begin at Cerro Mesa, a private reserve on the eastern side of Santa Cruz Island that is rich in endemic flora and bird life, including the elusive vermillion flycatcher and seven unique subspecies of finch. Explore the various trails with your guide, ending the circuit at a viewpoint where, on a clear day, you can survey the lush landscape of Santa Cruz as well as nearby islands.

Afterwards, you will make your way to Garrapatero Beach, either by car or by bicycle. In contrast to the thick, green vegetation of the highlands, the coastal terrain is made up of black lava, white sands, turquoise waters and dense mangroves.

The picturesque, white-sanded beach of Garrapatero is an ideal spot for a picnic and secluded swimming, set far away from the cruise ship crowds and visiting sites. Kayaking can also be arranged here and is a fun way to explore the coastline and its wildlife.

Set behind the beach is a small lagoon where flamingoes are occasionally spotted.

On your way back to the Camp you will visit a working farm in the highlands that produces sugar cane liqueur and Galapagos coffee. Learn about the different methods used to refine sugar cane, including the use of a mule-driven press (note: the mule may be off-duty during your visit). There is also a demonstration of how artisan coffee is produced, from picking the berries to roasting the bean.

Santa Cruz Experiential Fishing

Spend the day with a local fisherman exploring the waters around Santa Cruz. This experience has become a firm favorite with our guests, as it combines wildlife experiences with cultural exchange, swimming, snorkeling and a visit to a secluded beach. It is also part of an initiative with the Galapagos National Park, to provide fishermen with an alternative means of livelihood while reducing the impact of overfishing.

Once aboard the fisherman’s simple, yet fully equipped motorboat, the captain will navigate to a spot where the best fishing can be enjoyed. After a hands-on lesson, you can try your luck at catching lunch. The most common species caught on this Safari are Yellowfin Tuna and Palometa. If you are successful, the crew can prepare sashimi on the boat for you to enjoy for lunch.

Note: The National Park no longer allows visitors to take their catch off the boat for later consumption.

In between fishing you will have the opportunity to snorkel and explore a secluded beach on Santa Cruz’s coastline that can only be accessed by sea.

This is a chance to experience the wild beauty of the Galapagos, exploring spots that are only accessible to local fisherman, and not to all visitors. Relax on the beach, or snorkel in the clear waters with rays, colorful schools of fish, and sea lions. And if you’re lucky, dolphins might even follow you in the boat’s wake.

Lunch is served on board the boat as food is not permitted on the beach / in the National Park.

Our Responsible Fishing program can be enjoyed by guests young and old, no matter if they’re seasoned fishermen or complete novices.

RELAX BEFORE MORNING DEPARTURE

Enjoy the serene nature and peace of the Camp this morning. Relax, walk, swim or enjoy the sunrise from our viewpoint before departure to the airport and your next destination.

...OR EXTEND YOUR TRIP

This Safari can be extended with our 2 day/3 night Isabela Island Safari Extension , a Scuba-Diving Extension or any of our Mainland Safari Extensions . Please be aware that while our Extension Safaris are still led by expert guides, they are not hosted by the Founders.

Small Group Tours

Aside from our Founders’ Safaris, we do not have any Small Group Safaris scheduled at present. If you would like to be notified about future tours, please contact one of our Safari Designers who can keep you updated on upcoming opportunities.

Day 3: Sunday, April 6 – Quito to Baltra Embarkation

Day 4: Monday, April 7 - Gardner Bay & Suarez Point

The beach at Gardner Bay, with its sparkling white sand, offers one of the best places to relax and swim in the Galapagos. It’s home to one of the most important colonies of sea lions in the archipelago, and is also a nesting site for sea turtles. Three species of Darwin’s finches and Española mockingbirds may also be seen here.

At Suarez Point, be greeted by a colony of sea lions upon arrival. This area is also home to nearly the entire world population of Waved Albatross—though they’re graceful in the air, their clumsy behavior on land is a sight to see. A cliffside hike leads to a natural lava fissure that spews water like a towering geyser.

Day 5: Tuesday, April 8 - Cormorant Point & Bahia Post Office

Floreana was the first capital of the Galapagos, and where Charles Darwin met the islands’ Governor. It’s small brackish lagoon is often home to flamingos, stilts, and white-cheeked pintail ducks, and one of its beaches is a highly used nesting site for sea turtles. Check out the green-hued sand where you land.

group tours galapagos islands

Day 6: Wednesday, April 9 - Moreno Point & Urvina Bay

Composed of five coalesced volcanoes, Isabela is the largest island in the Galapagos and the most recently active, the latest eruption having occurred in 2015. Here we will see large land iguanas, finches, and if lucky, a giant tortoise or two. In 1954, the intrusion of magma below one of the island’s volcanoes caused part of the bay to be uplifted some 6 meters, and today we can walk through the remains of what was once a thriving underwater reef.

Day 7: Thursday April 10 - Espinoza Point & Vicente Roca Point

Fernandina is the youngest island in the Galapagos and, as Darwin wrote, it is “covered with immense deluges of black naked lava”. Along with its extraordinary black lava rocks, this point of land hosts the largest colony of marine iguanas in the Archipelago, along with sea lions and a nesting site for flightless cormorants.

group tours galapagos islands

Day 8: Friday, April 11 - South Plaza, Daphne Island, and Dragon Hill

A small uplifted island just off the northeast coast of Santa Cruz. The island’s low-lying landscape is covered with colorful saltbush, scrub, and giant prickly pear cactus. A subspecies of land iguana is found on the island in plentiful abundance and sometimes can be seen munching on the cactus. The southern cliffs are steep and rocky, and home to numerous seabirds as well as a bachelor colony of sea lions. Looking down into the clear blue waters, schools of surgeonfish swim by as birds shoot in and out of the holes in the cliff.

Daphne is a satellite volcanic cone located north of Santa Cruz Island. The crater floor is an important breeding site for blue-footed boobies. The cliff shore of the island is home for sea lions, pelicans, blue-footed boobies, and tropical birds which can be observed during the circumnavigation of the island.

Dragon Hill, or “Cerro Dragon” is named after its population of land iguanas. The site offers a beautiful view of the landscape and two small brackish lagoons where flamingos and other shore birds occasionally feed. Along the trail, we’ll cross a beautiful “white forest” of Palo Santo (incense) trees and Galapagos cotton plants.

Day 9: Saturday, April 12 - Puerto Ayora

This is the main population center of the islands, and home to the National Park Service tortoise-breeding center and the Charles Darwin Research Station.

Galapagos Discovery

9 days | meet sea lions and bunk on the best islands.

Blue footed booby looking out to sea, Galapagos Islands

Take in the highlights of the unique flora- and fauna-rich islands of the Galapagos on this eight-day adventure. From rubbing shoulders with giant tortoises to gazing up in wonder at the spectacular blue-footed boobies’ synchronised fishing technique, the Galapagos offers the chance to see an abundance of rare creatures at close range. We’ll show you the best islands, coves and natural wonders, and give you plenty of time to explore (with local advice!) so you can spend your time the way you want. Snorkel with sea lions, swim with sea turtles and relax in paradise.

Trip overview

  • Get your blood pumping as you scale Sierra Negra Volcano during an epic hike, then cool off with a swim in the perfect waters of Isla Isabela’s beaches.
  • Many come to Isla Santa Cruz just for the giant tortoises. Get up close and personal with these enormous animals as they drag themselves through the sand.
  • Learn about the unique habits of the marine iguana. This dinosaur-like little creature has an iridescent sheen and is only found on the Galapagos Islands.
  • Birdwatching at the Galapagos is quite an experience. Watch the aerobatic routines of blue-footed boobies and the death defying stunts of the frigate birds as they whizz through the air.
  • This trip combines plenty of must-try activities and islands with generous mounts of free time, so you can explore the Galapagos at your own pace.
  • This trip begins in Quito, where elevation can cause altitude sickness regardless of age or physical health. Please see the ‘Medical and health information’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
  • This trip includes a 17 km hike (approximately 6 to 7 hours) on rocky terrain. We recommend bringing sturdy, comfortable hiking or trail shoes with good support.
  • This trip involves a lot of travel by speedboat between the various Galapagos Islands. The rides can be quite bumpy at times, but the good news is that seasickness can often be managed with medication. Please consult a health professional to assess your suitability for such medication.
  • From June to August the water in the Galapagos can be rougher than usual. Consequently, travel times will be longer than usual. If you suffer from seasickness you may want to reconsider travelling during this period.
  • Proximity to the equator means the sun in the Galapagos is incredibly strong. Ensure you are prepared with sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. We also recommend a rash guard.
  • This trip includes snorkelling on multiple days. Confident swimming skills are required to take part. Alternative activities will not be available.
  • Many travellers express interest in diving in the Galapagos. We are now able to assist with booking this activity, but only through a provider that meets our internal safety policy. Speak to your agent at the time of booking for more information.
  • The Galapagos is a great place to switch off and take a break from your phone, as internet access can be patchy and wi-fi is not always available or reliable.
  • Hot water can be sporadic in some parts of the Galapagos, so there may be a few cold showers on the trip.
  • If you would like a trip that starts and ends in the Galapagos, please search the website for our trip Galapagos Experience (GGRX).

Bienvenidos! Welcome to Quito, Ecuador. Your trip begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive with some time to spare before the meeting, consider exploring the city on an Urban Adventure like the Quito Market Discovery.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Cotopaxi - National Park Hiking Tour - USD95
  • Quito - La Ronda Walk - Free
  • Antisana Trek Full day from Quito - USD120
  • Quito - Papallacta Hot Springs (Full day) - USD70
  • Quito - Bellavista Cloud forest (Full day) - USD110
  • Urban Adventures: Condors and Culture in Otavalo - USD756
  • Quito - Urban Adventures: Legends and Culture Tour - USD50

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

We recommend not partaking in any strenuous activity until you have time to gauge your reaction to the city’s high altitude, as some people experience mild symptoms of attitude sickness such as dizziness, shortness of breath and sleeplessness.

Please note, some optional activities require a minimum of two passengers to operate and prices listed are subject to change. For more information on Urban Adventures in Quito, visit urbanadventures.com/destination/Quito-tours.

Transfer to the airport and board your flight around midday (an Intrepid representative will provide detailed flight times on the evening of Day 1 during the welcome meeting). Arrive in Isla San Cristobal and meet your leader at the arrivals lounge. Meet the travellers who began their journey in the Galapagos Islands and get straight into it with a visit to the Interpretation Centre to learn about the human and natural history of the archipelago. Afterwards, go for your first snorkel at Tijeretas, a small cove where you can swim with sea turtles, rays, and sea lions!

  • Isla San Cristobal - Interpretation Center (45 minutes)
  • Isla San Cristobal - Snorkelling in Tijeretas Hill

Enjoy a free day on Isla San Cristobal. You may also like to take an optional boat ride to Kicker Rock or Isla Lobos – one of the most recommended activities. You'll be able to observe the famous Galapagos marine life along the way as well as the opportunity to go snorkelling with sea turtles, eagle rays and the harmless Galapagos shark, just to name a few.

  • Kicker Rock excursion - USD120
  • Frigate Bird Hill - Free
  • Mann Beach - Free
  • Snorkelling gear rental - USD5
  • Isla Lobos. - USD80

Please note the Isla Lobos optional activity can only be booked with eight or more passengers.

Early in the morning, take a 2.5-hour public speed boat ride to Isla Santa Cruz. On arrival, have breakfast and settle into the hotel before a mid-morning visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station. The station's visitor centre and museums contain information about the islands and the conservation efforts being made to preserve the unique ecosystem here. It's also a great place to have close encounters with giant tortoises. In the afternoon, head to the higher part of the islands to observe these giants roaming in their natural habitat.

  • Isla Santa Cruz - Highlands Visit (1.5 hours) - Dry Landing
  • Isla Santa Cruz - Charles Darwin Research Centre (45 Minutes)

Today you’ll travel to Isla Isabela where you’ll check-in to the hotel and enjoy breakfast. The island is the largest in the Galapagos and one of the most volcanically active places on earth. You have a free day here to explore at your own pace. A worthwhile optional activity today is an excursion to Las Tintoreras, where white-tipped sharks rest during the day and marine iguanas nest.

  • Isla Tintoreras - USD47
  • Isla Isabela - wetsuite rental - USD15
  • Kayak rental - USD50
  • Isla Isabela - Snorkeling in Concha y Perla - Free
  • Isabela Island – Snorkelling gear rental - USD5
  • Tunneles Snorkelling - USD120

Start the day with a visit to the Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre for a close encounter with these placid giants. Here you can see tortoises in different stages of development as well learn about the preservation program of this unique species. Take a bus to the highest part of Isabela Island where Sierra Negra Volcano is located. Weather permitting, go for a hike up to the crater to enjoy spectacular views and the possibility of sighting the rare vermillion flycatcher. The challenging 17-kilometre hike takes between 5—6 hours, but at the top you'll be able to enjoy spectacular views. After the hike, make your way back to town in the late afternoon for some free time to curl up with a book or venture down to the water for a relaxing swim before dinner.

  • Isla Isabela - Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre (1 Hour)
  • Isla Isabela - Sierra Negra Volcano Hike (5-6 Hours)

Please ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes that offer good support for today’s rocky climb.

During the rainy season it can get quite muddy and there is an option to hire gumboots locally should you wish to do so. It can also get quite hot and there isn't much shade along the way, so be sure to come prepared with your reusable water bottle, hat and sunscreen.

Unfortunately, recycling isn't available on Isabela, so please take your plastic rubbish with you.

Travel back to Santa Cruz in the morning and enjoy some free time. Consider taking part in some of the optional activities available, such as an excursion to Tortuga Bay, an immaculate natural paradise where you can go kayaking, observe marine iguanas and birds or swim with harmless sharks in an alcove. After lunch (own expense), jump on a boat to La Loberia where you can swim in the waters that the area’s sea lions call home. Then, it’s off to Punta Estrada to observe birds like blue-footed boobies and pelicans. Finally, visit Playa de Los Dogs to see a large number of iguanas, the only sea-going lizard in the world that lives in these volcanic landscapes.

  • Santa Cruz Marine Reserves - Half Day Boat Tour
  • Isla Santa Cruz - Tortuga Bay walk - Free

Say goodbye to these enchanting islands and your Galapagos leader. The flight back to Quito leaves at midday and stops in Guayaquil en-route to Quito. You should arrive in Quito in the early evening (4-5pm). A representative from Intrepid will take you from the airport to your hotel. Enjoy a free evening in Quito.

  • Quito - Market Discovery Urban Adventure - USD99
  • Quito - Sweet & Culinary Experience - Urban Adventures - USD103
  • Quito - Old Town & Gastronomic- Urban Adventures - USD99
  • Quito - Condors and Culture in Otavalo Urban Adventures - USD156
  • Quito - Otavalo Indian Market (Full day) - USD70
  • Quilotoa - Quilotoa Lagoon (Full day) - USD100

There are no activities planned for the final day. If you want to spend more time in Quito, speak to an Intrepid booking agent to secure extra accommodation (subject to availability). You can get to know the city on an Urban Adventure. See urbanadventures.com for details.

Dates and availability

Important notes.

1. Due to limited hotel availability, a single supplement is not available on this trip.

2. Full passport details are required at the time of booking. The passport you travel with must match the booking details provided to us. This information is necessary to purchase entry permits to certain sites. Delays in providing this information could result in additional booking fees or changes to your itinerary.

3. All visitors to the Galapagos must have a Transit Control Card. We will use your passport details to complete the application process on your behalf. At the Welcome Meeting in Quito, you will be required to pay your leader US$20 in cash to cover the fee.

4. The Galapagos National Park fee (US$100) and Isabela Port fee (US$10) are payable upon arrival to the islands (cash only). These amounts are in addition to your trip payment. From the 1st of August 2024 the Galapagos Islands National Park fee will be increasing from US$100 to US$200.

4.Strict rules apply in the Galapagos Islands to protect and preserve its unique biodiversity. Intrepid supports these rules, which range from times of the day that a destination can be visited to the distance kept between people and wildlife. In particular, not removing anything from the environment (shells and corals, for example). All rules will be explained in more detail by your leader when you join the trip. Not adhering to these rules can lead to hefty fines for travellers and Intrepid losing the license to operate in the Galapagos Islands. Failure to adhere to the rules can result in your removal from the trip without a refund. For more information: http://www.galapagos.org/travel/travel/park-rules/

Accommodations were top-notch and our local guides incredibly knowledgeable. I can't say enough wonderful things about our tour leader. Super, super funny, patient, caring, thoughtful, diplomatic, organized - he made all of us feel included and taken care of."  - Nora, Galapagos '21

group tours galapagos islands

The Galapagos is an expensive, "up-market" destination but we've created something special at an amazing value! Take a look at the details below and you will see that our small group trip is arguably the best deal out there when you factor in everything we have been able to include!

Part 1: Santa Cruz Island & Her Nearby Gems

Santa Cruz is the most important island in the Galapagos archipelago with the only substantial port town of Puerto Ayora. The "bustling" town is home to the vast majority of all residents of the islands combined topping out at a staggering 12,000 people. This offers insight into the amount of conservation and protected land on the island despite having the only major town in the whole volcanic island chain. From white sand beaches teeming with endemic marine iguana, lush highlands where some of the only giant tortoises in the world still roam, turtle coves, thriving reefs, ancient calderas, & of course, Darwin's Finches all live in harmony with the small human population here (for once!).

Day Boat Excursions

*For our two full days staying on Santa Cruz, we'll head off island on exciting day trips via yachts in search of biological wonders!

group tours galapagos islands

The largest of the Galapagos islands came to be from the merging of 6 different volcanoes (5 are still active!). Well known for having the second biggest active crater in the world, Isabela is located on the western side of the archipelago and has one of the richest marine ecosystems. Penguins, Flightless Cormorants, Marine & Land Iguanas, and many Marine Birds reside on Isabela and offer a picture of the evolving process that these species went through. As you can see on the right, the island is shaped EXACTLY like a seahorse!

is-las-tintoreras

* The tours to all islands listed above are subject to availability and regulation guidelines. The park service sometimes changes regulations and rotates the islands that tourists are allowed to access with little or no prior notice. The above islands are the most likely places we will get to visit but may be substituted  with other nearby sites/islands which have similar and/or different flora and fauna.

Part II: Private   Luxury Yacht Island Hopping

Our next experience is special and one that is sure to wow friends and family with the images captured and stories to share. We'll board our very own private cruising yacht and embark on a journey throughout the eastern Galapagos Islands. Aboard the Coral II, we'll live in the perfect combination of classic beauty and exquisite style. Built in Holland, the ship surpasses all the standards you would expect from a high-class yacht,  providing a slightly larger than average (and therefore more stable) cruising vessel while maintaining the friendly atmosphere of a small expedition yacht.

Coral II Galapagos tours

Every cabin features handsome wood decoration, along with air-conditioning, a private bathroom, safe deposit box, telephone, and your choice of background music. Additionally, the Coral has plenty of room to relax with three sundecks (some shaded), a jacuzzi, comfortable dining room, and lounge. Our very own naturalist guide, captain, and full board service staff will pamper us throughout!

coral cabin

*Since we are chartering this amazing boat just for our travel club, there are two cabin categories: standard plus, & jr. suite. The Jr. Suites have a total supplement of 275.00 USD per person (a ridiculous steal!) and first to submit a deposit & request these cabins will get them. *More cabin details within the daily itinerary- E-mail us!

Exctint Tortoise

* South Plaza Islet, Land of Red & Yellow:   An impressive cactus forest where colorful yellow and red land iguanas live will be our introduction to this small landmass. Another peculiar thing to see in South Plaza is the unique, hybrid iguana (sea and land). During the time of year we'll be here, the landscape should be gleaming with the vegetation's glow of reds, greens, and yellows (Great landscape shots!).

South Plaza Island Colors

*Lobos Islet:   A small population of blue-footed boobies and great frigatebirds nests here, along with a colony of sea lions. Our walk will introduce us to these colorful species to admire and photograph.

sea lions galapagos

* Mosquera Islet, Land of Sea Lions: This flat, sandy island has a huge colony of sea lions and is also an excellent site to observe & photograph shorebirds such as herons and lava gulls. Hop into the water for a snorkel to discover the sea lions and unique water creatures not found on the land!

Galapagos news: lonesome george could have offspring.

Amazing Galapagos

After 36 years of exhaustive efforts, “Lonesome George”, the last survivor of the Pinta Island giant tortoise species (Geochelone abigdoni) would be able to reproduce. Park rangers in charge of the “Fausto Llerena” Captive Breeding Center found a nest with eggs laid by one of the two Wolf Volcano females that have shared a pen with him since 1993. Out of nine eggs laid, only three were intact. These were placed in incubators, at different temperatures to obtain 2 females and 1 male. There will be a wait of 120 to 130 days before it is known if the eggs are fertile and George will have offspring. * Source: Communication Process – Galapagos National Park

What people love about fully guided tours in galapagos islands.

This was a great tour, the galápagos is amazing! G-adventure has a well organized tour. There are some early morning days but they don't matter because you are in the Galápagos! The rooms are basic but have air conditioning which is good since it is very hot there. José was a fantastic guide and had so much knowledge about the islands. Definitely choose the add-on snorkeling trips they are worth it. I think the Galápagos needs to be on everyone's list.
Amazing experience, and our guide was so knowledgeable and resourceful.
This tour is intended for people who are physically fit, able to walk 6 kilometers a day, love to kayak/snorkel/swim/bike, and still have plenty of energy to enjoy the wildlife. I cannot cope up with the group, but luckily our CEO offered me options like museum visit, tour to Tntoreras. I still was able yo see all the wildlife I need to see exvept the cormorant. I did not expect to stay in a 5 star hotel. I find the accommodation suitable enough for my needs: comfortable bed, air condition, water, electricity, wifi. Special thanks to Sandra, CEO. She is one of the best tour guides I met in my years of travel. She is a great listener and teacher. She was born in Santa Cruz. She knows Galapagos like the palm of her hand.

group tours galapagos islands

  • What is the best time to visit Cuyabeno? Every month offers ideal wildlife watching and great experience, but the big difference between Cuyabeno and other parts of the Amazon is the flooded lagoon. It is best to try and avoid dry season (December-February) as the lagoon may be dry.
  • Can I start my trip to Cuyabeno anyday of the week? Yes, we offer a wide variety of lodges with different operations each, so depending on your starting day we can offer a lodge that fits into your travel itinerary.
  • Can you arrange my transport from Quito to Lago Agrio and back? Yes we can. We work with a third party company that offers a private touristic bus route Quito-Lago Agrio-Quito for a convenient price. $22pp per way.
  • Are all the lodges the same? No, we have visited most lodges in Cuyabeno and know the differences between them. We will send you to the best quality/price option for you within your budget and travel dates.
  • How far in advance should I book? We recommend to save your spot at least two to three months in advance (specially during High season from June to September)
  • Can "Last Minute Tours" be arranged?" Yes, at Smart Galapagos we search for availability on all the lodges in Cuyabeno. Please try to book with at least 1 week in advance.
  • Can I change my travel date once booked? Yes, we can arrange a date change this without charges depending on availability on the same lodge. If there is no availability on the changed dates and you decide to cancel, there will not be any refund.
  • I'm traveling alone, can I go?" Of course! Solo travelers are welcome to travel to Cuyabeno or Galapagos with us. We don’t charge single supplement unless you prefer a private single room.
  • Can children go? Yes, there is no age limit for Cuyabeno tour, but we recommend it for children 4-5 or more since we will be enjoying walking tours. Children must be accompanied by their parents or an adult.
  • Can I pay with credit card? Yes, you can pay via transfer to our Ecuadorian bank or if you prefer with Credit Card for a small extra fee (2.9%, lowest in the market). Paypal is also accepted but fees are higher.
  • Do you have clean energy? Yes, we do work with renewable and clean solar power that works from 6pm until 10pm.
  • Are there communications & internet in the jungle? This is deep jungle, no internet is available except on one big tree in the middle of the lagoon that catches a very low signal :) For emergencies we do have telephone on most of our lodges.
  • Is travel insurance recommended? Yes, before traveling to Ecuador, please get a travel insurance.
  • Vaccination and insects? It is recommended to bring a repellent high in DEET. Precaution against yellow fever is recommended althought it is not mandatory to get vacinated for this part of the Amazon. Sleep with the mosquito net.

Truly one of the best trips I’ve ever had. It was my first time ever doing a solo trip. Himanshu gave us an itinerary and a list of good traveling tips for Egypt months in advance. He is very organized and responsive so I never had any concerns. Everything was already taken care of. All I had to do was show up. The scenes in Egypt were breathtaking and I saw places that I never thought I’d see.

Had a great time in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. Land in Salt Lake City & the rest of the trip is taken care by BLGT.. you have absolutely nothing to worry about.. logistics, campsite booking, tickets, planning is all done by them. We had a great guide with us through out the trip. Would definitely be going with BLGT in future.

The trip was to the Galapagos and it was wonderful Quito was also a beautiful City.

This was a trip of a lifetime, been wanting to do this for a long time. All planning done right and price was great can’t wait for my next trip, unfortunately I can only do one a year

Had a great experience through BLGT recently in Alaska; appreciated the trip leaders’ ability to handle logistics so you could focus on the experience and having fun. It was just like traveling with a group of friends, with the added bonus of the itinerary being all taken care of.

Galapagos Islands group tours for solo travelers

Travel solo as part of a group tour to The Galapagos Islands and experience a vast array of wildlife, from sea lions and sharks to turtles and penguins.

Why travel solo to the Galapagos Islands?

On our Galapagos Islands groups tours for solo travellers, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with an awe-inspiring biodiversity.

These are the very islands where Charles Darwin conceived his groundbreaking theory of natural selection – and you’ll see why. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, you could think of these islands as a living museum of evolution, like no other on earth. Home to giant tortoises, sea lions, penguins and iguanas – among countless other species – wildlife lovers among you will be in your element here.

The islands’ landscapes are just as impressive. Located at the axis of three major tectonic plates, this is a region shaped by intense volcanic activity, with Sierra Negra boasting one of the world’s largest calderas. Your adventure to the Galapagos Islands will immerse you in nature’s wild magic.

Top places to visit in the Galapagos

The largest of the Galapagos Islands is also one of the least inhabited. A volcanic and biodiverse island, Isabella is ripe for exploration and a great spot for anyone looking to immerse themselves in nature. Here, you’ll find volcanoes, colonies of flamingos and a huge array of marine life, all on one island.

Tintoreras islets

The calm turquoise waters of this beautiful bay are home to sea lions, sea turtles, marine iguanas and rays. At low tide, the entrance to the bay closes and there’s a shallow crevice where you’ll find reef sharks swimming along. Catch a boat over to this small bay, keeping an eye out for penguins and blue-footed boobies along the way.

Itabaca Canal

Explore the Santa Cruz coast from the water at Itabaca Canal. If you hop in a kayak, you can paddle through red mangrove forests and along cliff banks formed through ancient lava flows. It’s also home to sea lions and reef sharks, so keep an eye out for wildlife along the way.

North Seymour Island

Head over to this beautiful uninhabited island for a day trip to observe native Galapagos birds in their element as they fish at one of the most important spots for local birds. This island is a great spot for hiking and snorkeling, but make sure you bring a picnic.

Then, you’ll visit the colonial side of the city where you'll see attractions like the Cathedral, the Viceroyalty of Peru, the main places of Lima's Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the Government Palace, the City Hall, and other important monuments.

Day 3 Paracas Ballestas Islands Paracas

This morning, enjoy a tour of the spectacular Ballestas Islands by boat.  Inhabited by amazing marine life, with over 200 types of migratory and resident birds, including Peruvian Pelicans, Peruvian boobies and turkey vultures, among others. In addition, you will also see hundreds of sea lions resting at the beaches, sleeping on the rocks or swimming nearby. The islands also provide shelter to the shy Humboldt penguins which are usually seen at the entrances of small caves near the cliffs.

Following our tour, we return to the hotel where the rest of the day is at leisure to take advantage of the hotel’s facilities.

Alternatively, you may wish to book an optional tour to see the incredible Nazca lines by air.

The mystery surrounding the Nazca Lines enigma continues to go unanswered. Buckle up and get ready to be amazed by the splendour and magnificent art of the Nazca lines in the comfort of a fixed wing Grand Caravan Cessna aircraft . Unfolding beneath you are dozens of animal figures, trapezoids and hundreds of ruler-straight lines that lie across the rocky Nazca plateau, visible only from the air. Some say it is an ancient solar calendar. Others suggest the Lines acted as ritual pathways for religious processions. Still others believe it was just an ancient culture’s way of asking for water during a long drought.

Note: The Ministry of Culture touristic entrance ticket for the Nazca Lines must be paid locally. The current charge is PEN 47.00 (approx USD12.00) per person.

Day 4 Paracas Lima Arequipa

In the morning, after breakfast, you will be transferred approximately 4.5 hours by road to Lima airport in time for your included flight to Arequipa. A delightful colonial city, Arequipa is situated at the foot of El Misti Volcano, a snow-capped perfect cone of 5,822 metres. Known as the White City, Arequipa is teeming with fine Spanish buildings and wonderful natural landscape.

On arrival you will be transferred to your historic hotel located in front of the main square of Plaza de Armas.

Day 5 Arequipa

After breakfast, meet your local guide for a walking tour of the main historic sites of Arequipa. Visit the Plaza de Armas (Main square), one of the most beautiful and stunning of Peru. Here you will visit the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa with its neo classic style with French influences. We then take a visit to the Compañia de Jesus church, with its interior adorned with beautiful colonial paintings and golden altars. Finally, visit the local market of San Camilo as we taste our way through its exotic fruits, vegetables, and prepared dishes to get a better understanding of the culinary culture of Arequipa.

This evening enjoy a traditional dinner, Peruvian style, at a local picanteria. The restaurants in Arequipa are known as “Picanterias” a word that comes from “pick”, as people come together and sit around a table and “pick” from a large sharing plate filled with local specialties.

Day 6 Arequipa Colca Canyon

Leave Arequipa behind as we travel towards the Colca Canyon this morning. On the way we make a stop at Pampas Cañahuas (3,500m/11,482 Ft), a National Reserve where you may spot some Vicuñas and Alpacas that can be seen running freely on these high plateaus.

Continue your journey to the Colca Canyon as we ascend to the highest point of the trip (4,800 m /15,748 Ft). From here look over the incredible landscape across the Andes with the volcanoes Ubinas, Mismi, Misti, Chachani, Sabancaya (active) and Ampato all dotting the background. Arrive this afternoon at the quaint village of Chivay (3,600 m /11.811 Ft) where you will check into your charming hotel made up of rustic stone cottages located at the edge of the Canyon.  The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to explore the village on your own.

Day 7 Colca Canyon Puno

After breakfast, we travel towards the “Cruz Del Condor”, a natural lookout point where you can see Condors flying over the canyon and spectacular views of the canyon with hundreds of ancient agricultural terraces carved onto the slopes of the mountains.  Afterwards, you will return to the village of Chivay and travel approximately 4 hours towards the city of Puno, crossing the Altiplano (high Andean plateau).

Upon arrival into Puno, you will be dropped off at your hotel located in the historic centre of the city.  Located between the shores of Lake Titicaca and the mountains surrounding the city, Puno is the gateway to the famous floating islands of the Uros, an amazing archipelago of Totora islands, inhabited by the Uros, descendants of one of the oldest cultures of the continent.

Day 8 Puno Lake Titicaca

Start the day with a tour of Lake Titicaca. Sitting 3820 metres above sea level, it holds the title of highest navigable lake in the world. Hop in a motorboat and learn about the spiritual significance the lake holds for the Quechua while cruising across its waters. Stop off at Uros Titinos, a floating man-made islands made entirely from reeds and home to several families. Later, head to your homestay in the Lake Titicaca region. To get a better understanding of daily life, why not help your host family with some of their daily activities. Your hosts will be happy to teach you a few words of their language, Quechua, and a friendly game of soccer may also be on the cards!

Day 9 Lake Titicaca Puno

After breakfast, take a 1-hour boat ride to Taquile Island. The locals here make their livelihood out of textiles, with the women doing the spinning and men doing the knitting. Browse the handmade goods sold here including warm, high-quality items. Next, take an uphill trek for about an hour to visit the main area of the island. After a brief stay, the boat will take you back to Puno (about 3 hours).

Day 10 Puno Cusco

We’ll set off for Cusco today, a ten-hour bus journey. This is a gorgeous scenic journey where along the way, we’ll visit charming landmarks rich with natural beauty and history including the Pukara Museum, and "La Raya" the highest point on this route at 4335 metres high. Afterwards you will descend towards the picturesque "village of Sicuani", where you will enjoy an included buffet lunch at a local restaurant, which is served with native products of this region. Later on, you’ll continue your tour at the famous "Inca Temple of Racchi", considered the only Inca place where visitors can see circular constructions, and walls of mud bricks, something you won't see anywhere else on your trip. Then, continue to the traditional town of Andahuaylillas, where you will visit an impressive Cathedral built in the colonial era. Finally, you will arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon.

Cusco is the continent's oldest continuously inhabited city and was the home of the Inca Empire for two centuries before the Spanish built their first capital here. Today Cusco is a fascinating combination of both cultures. Inca-built walls line the central streets and many of the elegant colonial buildings are built on or around Inca foundations. This is a city steeped in history, tradition and legend and is a perfect base for explorations into the Inca world or to enjoy a range of outdoor activities.

Day 11 Cusco

In the morning, set out to discover some of Cusco's lesser-known sights on a guided walking tour. Visit the facade of Qoricancha temple, San Pedro market, the main square, 12 Angled Stone, Regocijo Square and San Blas Square. End the walking tour at Xapiri Café where you will be able to taste traditional snacks

Day 12 Cusco Sacred Valley

In the morning, travel approximately 2 hours through the Sacred Valley on the outskirts of Cusco. Known as Wilcamayo to the Incas, the lush, fertile valley has long been the main source of food for the high Andes. Maize crops can be seen surrounding the river and covering the terraces carved high into the valley walls. You will head to a community in the Valley to learn about local lifestyle and activities and if our visit coincides with market day you can spend time browsing the stalls in search of hand-painted beads or warm ponchos and maybe practising some of the local language, Quechua. You will enjoy regional lunch with the community. Later you will continue the tour visiting the town of Ollantaytambo which has been built over an ancient Inca town. This is a magnificent example of Inca urban planning and one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish. Ollantaytambo's archaeological site is located to the east of the Plaza de Armas. The upper terraces of this site offer great photo opportunities of the squared grid town below.

By the afternoon, you will be transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Day 13 Sacred Valley Moray Aguas Calientes

Today enjoy a guided trip to Maras Salt Ponds and the circular terraces of Moray. On the way you will see some of the most scenic spots in the Sacred Valley. First, visit the ancient salt ponds near the village of Maras, where salty springs emerge from the hillside and the Incas built terraces to capture the flows and harvest salt. Continue to Moray, where huge circular agricultural terraces were built by the Incas on limestone sinks served to plant various crops. It is said to have a cosmological significance, however, the Incas used the terraces as an agricultural laboratory to determine the optimum conditions for each species in varying altitudes.

After your tour, head to the local train station to board the tourist train towards Aguas Calientes, a modern little town close to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. The train ride to Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful journeys that visitors can experience in Peru. After passing the Sacred Valley of the Incas the train starts to descend gradually along the edge of the Urubamba River, till finally reach the cloud forest.

After approximately 1 hour 45 minutes you will have arrived in Aguas Calientes town, where you will be taken to your hotel for the night.

Dinner is included at the hotel.

Day 14 Aguas Calientes Machu Picchu Aguas Calientes Ollantaytambo Cusco

After breakfast, you will be taken to Machu Picchu, the impressive Lost City of the Incas. Upon arrival, we’ll enter the archaeological zone of Machu Picchu and the tour guide will show you the most important sectors of this great Inca City, such as the great Intiwatana (solar clock) and the Sun Temple, among others. Machu Picchu is divided into two sectors, the urban sector in the northern part and the agricultural sector on the south-east side.

Now the most recognisable icon of the Inca civilisation, Machu Picchu was long thought to be legendary. Then, in 1911, explorer Hiram Bingham stumbled upon its remains. At 2430 metres above sea level, Machu Picchu is in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing creation of the Inca Empire at the height of their reign. The stonework has to be seen up close to truly comprehend its intricate beauty. Giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments.

After the tour, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes by bus before taking the tourist train back to Ollantaytambo town, followed by a transfer to your hotel in Cusco.

Day 15 Cusco Puerto Maldonado Amazon Jungle

Today you will be transferred to Cusco airport for your included flight to Puerto Maldonado, your gateways to the incredible Amazon Jungle and coined the Capital of Biodiversity. Begin your authentic Amazon adventure with a 25-minute boat ride navigating the clay-coloured Madre de Dios River to reach hidden jungle lodge, Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. Settle into your stylish stilted wooden cabaña built in a former cacao and rubber plantation located in an enchanting and serene lush setting within 819 hectares of natural rainforest. Enjoy lunch at the lodge before exploring the depths of the jungle on foot. Take a walk along the Concepcion Trails, winding through the property’s nature trails for an immersive introduction to the intricate ecosystems of the Amazon basin. Backed by the protected Tambopata National Reserve, Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion harbours primary and secondary rainforest teeming with exotic wildlife and tropical plants. At dusk witness the enchanting transformation of the rainforest from a diurnal to a nocturnal environment on a guided Twilight River boat ride, as animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the shadows of the night. See if you can spot caiman lurking on the riverbanks and stars of the southern hemisphere.  In the evening enjoy à la carte dining, drawing on local Amazon ingredients for inspiration. Retreat to your cabaña room to listen to the curious calls and croaks of the rainforest at night.

Day 16 Amazon Jungle

After an early breakfast, we make the most of our day by heading out to visit Lake Sandoval, a glassy, ox-bow lake located inside the protected Tambopata National Reserve, reached via a sun-dappled rainforest trail. Board a dug-out wooden canoe to quietly paddle through a stream and glide onto Lake Sandoval, surrounded by picture-perfect palms. This lake is home to many species of birds, the endangered giant river otter, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles, black caimans amongst others. Return to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion in time for lunch and a rest.

In the afternoon we recommend climbing the exhilarating Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. The Canopy Walkway is a sophisticated 344 metre (1,135 feet) network of seven ecologically constructed hanging suspension bridges, strung between eight treetop observation platforms above the forest floor. This is an unforgettable opportunity to observe the rainforest from the rooftop and gain a sense of its size. Keep an eye out for bright toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth. It’s possible to extend your elevated stay with sunset drinks from atop a tower – or spend a once-in-a-lifetime night in a specially-designed treehouse cabin with surprising comforts (additional cost applies).

After dinner, you can venture out onto the Hidden Forest excursion. Armed with flashlights, as your senses heighten to the movements and sounds in the undergrowth of the forest, keep an eye for species that only emerge during nighttime.

Day 17 Amazon Jungle Puerto Maldonado Lima

Enjoy your last morning waking to the sounds of the rainforest as parakeets chatter away in the trees and monkeys swing through the treetops. After breakfast we travel by boat for the 25-minute return trip along the Madre de Dios River until arriving at the airport for your included flight to Lima.

Upon arrival at Lima, you will be transferred to your hotel where the rest of the day is at leisure

Estimate time of the walking tour: 2 hours   Note: The complementary city tour will be available to those whose flights arrive before 1500hrs

Day 19 Guayaquil Santa Cruz Island

This morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to the Galapagos Islands.  (Flight tickets and departure time will be advised locally on your arrival in Guayaquil). The research station plays a crucial role in the conservation and preservation of the Galápagos Islands' delicate ecosystem. Here, you'll learn about ongoing research projects, breeding programs for endangered species, and the conservation efforts to protect the islands' biodiversity. One of the main highlights of the Charles Darwin Research Station is the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center. You'll have the opportunity to see these magnificent creatures up close and learn about the conservation efforts to protect and reintroduce them to their natural habitats.

Note:  Please note a US$20 per person transit card is payable on departure at Guayaquil Airport.  Galapagos National Park entry fee is payable on arrival on the islands (for arrivals until 31 July 2024 the fee is US$100 per person. From 01 August 2024 the fee is US$200 per person) Both payments are made in USD cash.

Day 20 Santa Cruz Island outer island excursion Santa Cruz Island

After breakfast, you will embark on a full day tour to one of the beautiful uninhabited islands of Santa Fe, South Plaza, North Seymour or Bartolomé (subject to scheduling).   Your excursion will travel by speed boat - the trip takes approximately 2 hours each way.

Your expert naturalist guide will introduce you to the islands unique wildlife which may include endemic species such as Galapagos penguins, land iguanas, Darwin's finches, blue-footed Boobies and many more.

You will have the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Discover the marine life and vibrant coral reefs.

You’ll then return to Puerto Ayora by late afternoon.

Day 21 Santa Cruz Island San Cristobal Island

After breakfast, visit Tortuga Bay.  You will take a guided walk (45 minutes each way) to take in the scenery and wildlife.  Visitors can often encounter marine iguanas, Galápagos crabs, sea lions, and a variety of bird species such as pelicans and finches.

Once you reach Playa Brava, please be aware that swimming is not allowed here due to the presence of hazardous currents. For those wishing to swim, continue walking along the beach until you discover a trail leading through the mangrove forest. This path will take you to Playa Mansa, a sheltered bay where you can safely swim and relish the cool shade provided by the mangroves.

This afternoon, transfer to the pier and board a speed-boat to San Cristobal Island (approximately 2.5 hours ride). Upon arrival, you will enjoy a walking tour in the beautiful Puerto Baquerizo to enjoy the local life.

Day 22 San Cristobal Island Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido) San Cristobal Island

This morning you will visit one of the most iconic sites in the Galapagos Islands:  Kicker Rock or “Leon Dormido”, an amazing rock formation just 90 minutes from San Cristobal Island. This incredible landmark is a remnant of a vertical tuff cone formation with an altitude of 500 feet from the Pacific Ocean, it is considered as one of the best snorkelling sites in the Archipelago.

Erosion has given the formation its characteristic shape of a shoe (hence the name Kicker Rock) and others see a sleeping lion from above, the reason why in Spanish it is called “Leon Dormido”.

Snorkelling in the vicinity of the rock is truly an unforgettable experience! You will be able to spot marine iguanas, sea turtles, rays, Galapagos sharks, schools of colourful fish and, with some luck, hammerhead sharks. Also in the crevasses of the rock, you can encounter blue-footed boobies, masked-boobies and frigate birds.

Return to San Cristobal and your hotel for a well-deserved  short  resting time. In the afternoon, visit  La Loberia beach, a scenic beach filled with large colonies curious sea-lions, marine iguanas, frigate birds and more.

Note: in some instances visits to Kicker Rock will be restricted.  For groups not able to visit Kicker Rock, a visit to Isla Lobos will be provided as an alternative.  Isla Lobos is named after the numerous sea lions (lobos marinos in Spanish) that inhabit the island.  You'll also have opportunities to observe a variety of bird species, including blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and brown pelicans. Once you arrive at Isla Lobos, your naturalist guide will lead you on guided walks through the island's unique vegetation and provide opportunities for close encounters with the wildlife. You will have time to do snorkeling with unique species and then sail to an isolated beach, to relax on its sand, or swim or do some more snorkeling.

Day 23 San Cristobal Island Quito

This morning visit to the Interpretation Center, which takes you through the history and settlement of the islands. Visitors can enjoy expositions on natural history, human history and conservation. The natural history explains the different natural facts, such as the volcanic origin of the islands, the distance between the mainland, its currents, the special climate, the arrival of different species, etc. The exposition room of Human History gives a chronological overview of the discovery and colonization of the Galapagos.

The second section describes the reality of today's Galapagos: the problems and the struggle of several institutions and individuals to conserve Galapagos. The Center also has an outdoor theater and a cinema.

At the appropriate time you will be picked up  and transferred to the airport in time to board your flight to the capital of Ecuador, Quito. Upon arrival, your guide will welcome you and drive to your cosy centrally located hotel.  The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore the surroundings.

Day 24 Quito

Today you are at leisure to enjoy the quaint city at your own pace. The Ecuador capital is constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city and is known for its well-preserved colonial centre, rich with 16th- and 17th-century churches and other structures blending European, Moorish and indigenous styles.

Alternatively, you may wish to join an optional full day tour of this fascinating city.

Explore Quito's famous Old Town, considered as Human Heritage Patrimony and the largest Colonial district in all of South America. Along the way you'll visit “La Compañia de Jesus” Church, surely one of the most beautiful churches in South America, and also the charming “La Ronda” Street, the most popular colonial street for centuries in the centre of the City.

Afterwards, you will head to the north of the city for about 50 minutes to the also famous "Middle of the World" with its symbolic Monument and Compound with many open-air exhibits, cultural displays, shops and typical food Restaurants. The Monument was built during the XVII century when a French expedition travelled to Ecuador to define the precise location of the Equatorial Line.

Your guide will tell you all the important aspects of the Compound and its importance to researchers and scientist around the World; you will enter the Monument where you find many displays of the Ecuadorian rich and ancient culture and human history, also visit the on-site “Inti-Ñan” Museum where you can witness and participate in active experiments that prove that you are indeed at the Centre of the Earth.

Day 25 Quito

Your tour comes to an end today after breakfast.  At the appropriate time, make your own way to the airport.

Check out: Check-out time is generally between 10am-12pm. If you have booked your departing flight later in the day, you are welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception and spend your final moments of free time exploring the area or alternatively please speak with hotel staff if you would like to extend your check-out time (extra charges may apply).

How to Explore the Galapagos Islands for Its Natural Wonders

V isiting the Galapagos Islands is a once in a lifetime, bucket list adventure for many travelers. The island group of the coast of Ecuador is renowned for its biodiversity as well as its significance to Charles Darwin’s theory of Evolution . Inspired by the subtle differences he observed between species on each island, Darwin theorized that the unique challenges of different landscapes led to changes in the development of the creatures he encountered. Such creatures have continued to enchant visitors ever since. But the environment is protected and carefully conserved making a tourist trip a challenging, but highly rewarding experience.

Each Island Is Unique

With almost 20 unique islands and islets making up the archipelago, it ca be difficult to know where to begin when planning a trip. 7 of the islands are protected and preserved for the native wildlife; however, that leaves 13 still to explore. When planning a trip, research exactly what you’d like to experience as each island is very different. For example, the iconic giant tortoises can be seen up close at the Charles Darwin Research Centre in Santa Cruz (Hyperlink to be created – Lonesome George link to my other Galapagos article . If you’re more interested in witnessing the huge colonies of seals then the islands of Isabela and Fernandina would be best to see them relaxing on the rocky outcrops in their hundreds. Isabela island also boasts the island’s highest peak: Wolf Peak (1707m) – one of several volcanoes strewn through the island group.

The Habitat Is Closely Monitored and Protected

While you may be daydreaming about swimming with sharks or sailing past sea turtles, a serious amount of planning is needed to fully enjoy your trip. This is mainly due to how well protected the islands are. The Galapagos Islands became a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, with the definition being expanded to include its 27000sq km ocean marine reserve in 2001 (second only in size to the Great Barrier Reef). With such a prestigious status comes close control. Park permits are needed to access most areas and several sites are only accessible with a licensed guide.

Choose Between a Land or Boat Based Trip

Being a diverse island group, the Galapagos offers a myriad of options for potential tourists. Almost too many options – where to begin!? The best starting place is to decide between whether to take a land or boat based trip. Land based trips offer visitors the opportunity to have more flexibility and time as staying on land past sunset means you can relax and get to know the local neighborhoods. Plus, several wildlife species become more active after dark including birds and bats. However, a boat based trip may suit you if you’re looking to get close to some of the more remote islets such as Bartolome Island, home to a colony of Galapagos Penguins. A boat based trip is also a more agile option to allow your guide to react more quickly to reported whale and dolphin sightings , as well as the obvious choice for those interested in SCUBA diving.

Give Wildlife Plenty of Space

The wildlife is the star attraction of visiting the Galapagos Islands. The creatures of the island are renowned for a natural curiosity and a surprising lack of concern for the human visitors. In addition to this, the islands animals have free reign over the territory, outnumbering the human inhabitants (only 30,000 people live on the Galapagos Islands). So it can be hard to avoid close encounters with a seal, iguana or blue footed booby. However, the general rule is to give all creatures at least 2m space and not to pursue any who are moving away from you. This applies even in the sea where you may be lucky enough to find yourself swimming alongside sharks, turtles and rays.

The Sun Is Strong; Come Prepared

The landscape of the Galapagos Islands is one of extremes. Active volcanoes, sheltered bays and mangroves, lagoons filled with flamingoes. It’s easy to get lost exploring and spend the entire day outdoors. To do so safely, you must come prepared. Situated on the equator, the Galapagos experiences average temperatures of around 30 C all year round. And the sun’s rays are extremely powerful even on a cloudy day.  Little wonder that the sun was a fundamental feature in Incan temples in Ecuador.

It Is Like Nowhere Else on Earth

In his 2006 series, David Attenborough described the Galapagos as ‘The Islands that Changed the World.’ Visiting the place, it is hard to disagree. The abundance of flora and fauna is unparalleled and what makes it particularly special is how close visitors can come to real wild life encounters. Partly due to the absence of large predators, the wildlife dominates the land with confidence. Whether kayaking amongst the shark nurseries or trailing after hermit crabs on a beach, the Galapagos Islands offer a richly rewarding wildlife lovers experience with the opportunity to spot almost 30 species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
