Get behind the scenes of Cable News Network (CNN), which is based right here in Atlanta, Ga. A 50-minute guided walking tour lets you peek into the newsroom, control room and much more. Be sure to keep your eyes wide open; there’s no telling who you might see while walking the halls.

Reasons to take the CNN Studio Tour

  • Your tour begins on a long ride up the world’s largest freestanding escalator (which, before CNN, used to take visitors up to “The World of Sid and Marty Krofft,” an indoor amusement park). In fact, during the Sid and Marty Krofft days, the space that is now CNN’s main newsroom was a human pinball machine. The escalator is 196-feet long and eight stories high.
  • You’ll see how a teleprompter works.
  • You’ll find out how the weather map works.
  • You’ll watch the action inside Studio 7, the largest studio CNN has ever built anywhere in the world.
  • You’ll get a better understanding of how newsman John King moves things around on the touch-screen on election night.

Insider tips

  • Although the tour is permanently closed, you can still see the iconic CNN sign outside CNN Center. It is a popular photo spot.
  • The food court at CNN Center provides many options for dining.

Atlanta › Attraction

Cnn studio tour.

3 star rating

This tour of the world's largest newsgathering organization is lots of fun and a uniquely Atlanta experience. The CNN Center is headquarters for CNN, CNN International, and Headline News. During 50-minute guided walking tours, visitors get a behind-the-scenes look at the high-tech world of 24-hour TV network news in action.

You'll find the tour desk in the main lobby near the base of an eight-story escalator. While you're waiting for the tour to begin, you can have a videotape made of yourself reading the day's top stories from behind a CNN anchor desk. The tour starts in an exhibit area where you'll find timelines covering the history of CNN and Turner Broadcasting, interactive kiosks where you can surf the CNN websites or access clips from the top 100 stories that CNN has covered, memorabilia from some of those events, and a journalism ethics display. A theater that re-creates CNN's main control room allows you to experience the behind-the-scenes elements of a news broadcast.

Next, you'll enter a special-effects studio and get a glimpse of the technology that goes into the production of global news. Here you'll discover the magic of a high-tech Blue Chromakey system (it's what's used to broadcast that big map behind the weather folks), see how on-air graphics are made, and learn the secrets of the TelePrompTer.

On another level, visitors get a bird's-eye view of the main CNN newsroom from a glass-walled observation station. From here, you'll see the hustle and bustle of writers composing news scripts. If a live broadcast is in progress -- and chances are good that one will be -- you can see CNN newscasters at work. Tour guides are knowledgeable and can answer virtually any question.

The longer, more extensive VIP tour allows visitors to actually step out onto the main CNN newsroom floor and explore production areas not normally accessible to the public.

After your visit, stop by the Turner Store, which carries network-logo clothing and gift items, along with MGM movie paraphernalia. For sports fans, there's the Braves Clubhouse store, featuring the Atlanta Braves logo on every item you can imagine. There are several restaurants and numerous fast-food outlets in the atrium of the CNN Center, as well as a few shops. Remember that the tour includes quite of bit of walking and a very steep escalator ride, which carries you to great heights to begin your visit. Those afraid of heights might want to consider skipping the tour.

The 50 minute tour is very educational. We had a great tour guide. Control rooms are like what you see on NASA TV. Everyone has several monitors. The 8 floors of stairs wasn't too bad. You don't do them all at once.

The CNN center itself is pretty inpressive. Lots of fast food in the food court and one "sit down" restaurant- Dantanna's.

Parking at CNN Deck is the closest and costs $10. It is uncovered but easy walking distance.

Trump vs. Biden: Atlanta announced as location for first presidential debate of 2024 campaign

cnn visit atlanta

Trump Bden Getty Images.

ATLANTA — President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will debate right here in Atlanta. It will be the first debate of the 2024 presidential campaign, and it will be held at the CNN Atlanta studios on June 27.

CNN said no audience would be present and the moderators of the debate would be announced at a later date.

On social media, Biden said he accepted the invitation and put the ball in Trump’s court.

“Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, anytime, anyplace,” Biden wrote.

I’ve received and accepted an invitation from @CNN for a debate on June 27th. Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place. — Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) May 15, 2024

It didn’t take long for Trump to respond on Truth Social, saying:

“It is my great honor to accept the CNN Debate against Crooked Joe Biden,” Trump wrote.

Both said they have also accepted invitations to the ABC News debate scheduled for September.

Political experts told Channel 2 Action News that Georgia will be a key player again in November.

“Georgia is just that important. It’s a must-win state, I think, for both Trump and Biden. I can’t imagine winning the presidency this year without carrying Georgia, it’s that important,” Kennesaw State University political professor Kerwin Swint said.

Both Trump and Biden have been to the state several times already this year and will likely be back several more times before the election is over.

Biden won the state of Georgia in the 2020, election over Trump. It was the first time a Democrat took the state since Bill Clinton was elected in 1992.

What transpired after that election led to Trump and several of his allies being indicted on charges that they conspired to overturn the election here in Georgia, which will likely be a hot topic in the upcoming debate.

Trump has been pushing for more debates and earlier debates, arguing voters should be able to see the two men face off well before early voting begins in September. He has repeatedly said he will debate Biden “anytime, anywhere, any place,” even proposing the two men face off outside the Manhattan courthouse where he is currently on criminal trial in a hush-money case. He also has been taunting Biden with an empty lectern at some of his rallies.

Trump’s campaign on Wednesday challenged the Biden campaign to agree to at least two other debates between the two candidates, beside the June and September dates. The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Biden’s campaign has long held a grudge against the nonpartisan commission for failing to evenly apply its rules during the 2020 Biden-Trump matchups — most notably when it didn’t enforce its COVID-19 testing rules on Trump and his entourage.

Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon on Wednesday sent a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates to say that Biden’s campaign objected to the fall dates selected by the commission, which come after some Americans begin to vote, repeating a complaint also voiced by the Trump campaign. She also voiced frustrations over the rule violations and the commission’s insistence on holding the debates before a live audience.

“The debates should be conducted for the benefit of the American voters, watching on television and at home — not as entertainment for an in-person audience with raucous or disruptive partisans and donors,” she said. “As was the case with the original televised debates in 1960, a television studio with just the candidates and moderators is a better, more cost-efficient way to proceed: focused solely on the interests of voters.”

There was little love lost for the commission as well from Trump, who objected to technical issues at his first debate with Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 and was upset after a debate with Biden was canceled in 2020 after the Republican came down with COVID-19. The Republican National Committee had already promised not to work with the commission on the 2024 contests.

The Trump campaign issued a statement on May 1 that objected to the scheduled debates by the commission, saying that the schedule “begins AFTER early voting” and that “this is unacceptable” because voters deserve to hear from the candidates before ballots are cast.

The commission said in a Wednesday statement that “the American public deserves substantive debates from the leading candidates for president and vice president,” adding that its mission is “to ensure that such debates reliably take place and reach the widest television, radio and streaming audience.”

The Biden campaign also proposed that the Biden-Trump debates this year be hosted by “any broadcast organization that hosted a Republican Primary debate in 2016 in which Donald Trump participated, and a Democratic primary debate in 2020 in which President Biden participated — so neither campaign can assert that the sponsoring organization is obviously unacceptable: if both candidates have previously debated on their airwaves, then neither could object to such venue.”

Those criteria would eliminate Fox News, which did not host a Democratic primary debate in 2020, and potentially NBC News, which did not host a GOP one in 2016 — though its corporate affiliates CNBC and Telemundo were co-hosts of one debate each that year.

In teeing up the debates, both Biden and Trump traded barbs on social media — each claiming victory the last time they faced off in 2020.

“Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020, since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate,′ Biden said in a post on X, the site formerly known as Twitter. “Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal.”

Trump, for his part, said Biden was the “WORST debater I have ever faced - He can’t put two sentences together!”

Morehouse faculty approves honorary degree on President Biden ahead of visit

President will deliver 140th morehouse commencement address sunday.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Ahead of President Joe Biden’s Sunday Morehouse commencement address, the White House held a two-hour meeting with students and faculty at the nationally acclaimed HBCU.

Steven Benjamin, senior advisor to the president, met with the school Friday morning. In the early afternoon, Benjamin said Morehouse faculty voted to confer an honorary degree on the president.

Last month, Morehouse announced it had invited Biden to become the second sitting American president to deliver Morehouse College’s commencement address, following in the footsteps of his former boss, Barack Obama. Biden is scheduled to deliver the school’s graduation speech on Sunday, May 19, at 9 a.m.

In 2013, then-President Obama — under whom Biden served as vice president — delivered Morehouse’s commencement address for that class.

But almost immediately after the announcement, students, faculty and alumni began expressing concern over Biden’s visit to the campus. It was over Biden’s unwillingness to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. An online petition was also started seeking to persuade Morehouse College to rescind its invitation to Biden.

During a White House press briefing on Thursday Benjamin said that Biden will be able to hear directly from those at Morehouse College on Sunday.

“I’m sure the president will have a chance to engage with faculty, staff and students while he’s there,” said Benjamin

Biden’s Morehouse address is his second time delivering a commencement address to an HBCU. Last year, Biden spoke at Howard University, the alma mater of Vice President Kamala Harris.

When it comes time for Sunday’s commencement ceremonies, Morehouse College President David A. Thomas detailed what will and will not be allowed.

“We will allow silent non disruptive protest,” said Thomas.

He added, “we will also not ask police to take individuals out of commencement in zip ties, if faced with the choice I will cease the ceremonies on the spot.”

This weekend marks the president’s first visit back to the Peach State after a March campaign rally.

Biden’s schedule for Atlanta visit:

Saturday, May 18, 2024

12:30 p.m.: Biden departs Joint Base Andrews en route to Atlanta.

2 p.m.: Biden arrives at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

4 p.m.: Biden participates in a campaign reception in Atlanta.

Sunday, May 19, 2024

9 a.m.: Biden delivers the commencement address at Morehouse College.

11:30 a.m.: Biden departs from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Atlanta News First will stream the entire Morehouse College commencement, including President Biden’s remarks. Watch live at 9 a.m. by downloading the ANF+ app on Roku, AppleTV, FireTV or YouTube TV. Just search “Atlanta News First” anywhere you stream!

Biden and former President Donald Trump will also be in Atlanta on June 27, 2024, for a historic presidential debate hosted at CNN’s Atlanta’s studios.

The debate will air live on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español, CNN Max and CNN.com , at 9 p.m.

Both Biden and Trump are the respective, presumptive Democratic and GOP nominees for president, setting the stage for a historic rematch of their 2020 campaigns. They have been polling well within the margins of error for every poll thus far in the election season, making Georgia a virtual toss-up.

WASHINGTON — CNN announced on Wednesday morning that it will host a debate between President Joe Biden and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump at the network’s Atlanta studios on June 27.

CNN said  there would be no audience present for the debate and moderators will be announced later.

A second debate will be hosted by ABC News on Sept. 10 in which both candidates have agreed to partake,  according to ABC News.

Biden earlier Wednesday had called for two debates to be held before early voting for the November election begins — and Trump responded that he would do it.

On X, formerly Twitter,  Biden wrote  that he had accepted an invitation from CNN for a debate on June 27.

“Over to you, Donald,” Biden wrote. “As you said: anywhere, any time, any place.”

Trump has also accepted to participate in the June debate,  according to CNN .

Biden started Wednesday’s exchanges over debates when he wrote to the Commission on Presidential Debates saying he would not agree to a three-debate schedule  laid out earlier  by the nonpartisan organization, which has been organizing presidential debates since the 1980s. The first would have been Sept. 16.

“President Joe Biden believes the interests of the American people are best served by presidential debates that offer timely and relevant information to help inform voters before they make their choices — and that allow a head-to-head comparison of the two candidates with a chance of winning the election,” Jen O’Malley Dillon, the chair for the Biden campaign, wrote in a letter to the commission.

Trump then accepted Biden’s proposed debates, one in June and another in September, on his social media site, Truth Social. “I am Ready and Willing to Debate Crooked Joe at the two proposed times in June and September,” Trump wrote.

“Crooked Joe Biden is the WORST debater I have ever faced – He can’t put two sentences together!,” he also wrote.

Trump added that he wants to debate with Biden on immigration policy, electric vehicles, inflation, taxes and foreign policy. He also called for more than two debates.

In a response to the Biden campaign, the Trump campaign  is also proposing  additional debates in June, July, August and September.

“Additional dates will allow voters to have maximum exposure to the records and future visions of each candidate,” the Trump campaign wrote.

Breaking with precedent

By notifying the Commission on Presidential Debates that the president would not partake in its debates, the Biden campaign broke precedent and instead said that news organizations should host the debates.

The Biden campaign proposed that the hosting broadcast news organizations be any that held a Republican primary debate in 2016 that Trump participated in and any news organization that hosted a Democratic primary debate in which Biden participated in 2020.

That is so that “neither campaign can assert that the sponsoring organization is obviously unacceptable,” according to the letter.

The campaign proposed that the first debate be held in late June, “after Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial is likely to be over and after President Biden returns from meeting with world leaders at the G7 Summit.”

The second debate should be at the start of early September, the campaign argued, so that it is “early enough to influence early voting, but not so late as to require the candidates to leave the campaign trail in the critical late September and October period.”

The Biden campaign is also proposing that a vice presidential debate be held in late July, after the GOP nominee and running mate are selected at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

One unknown is whether an independent candidate such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. might also qualify for debates.

CNN said in a press release that to qualify for participation in its debate, ”a candidate’s name must appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold to win the presidency prior to the eligibility deadline; agree to accept the rules and format of the debate; and receive at least 15% in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters that meet CNN’s standards for reporting.”

The statement added that acceptable polls will include those sponsored by: CNN, ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, Marquette University Law School, Monmouth University, NBC News, the New York Times/Siena College, NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist College, Quinnipiac University, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.

“The polling window to determine eligibility for the debate opened March 13, 2024, and closes seven days before the date of the debate,” the statement said.

Biden and Trump to debate in Atlanta, announces CNN

cnn visit atlanta

A debate in a presidential rematch is coming to Atlanta. CNN  announced Wednesday that it will be hosting a presidential debate in June, with both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump confirming their attendance.

Georgia is a crucial battleground state for both candidates, with Biden eeking out a slim plurality in the state in 2020, and Trump narrowly winning in 2016.

The debate will be held at 9 p.m. June 27, and will be filmed at CNN’s Atlanta studios. Unlike many previous presidential debates, there will not be an audience present, a decision a news release said would “ensure candidates may maximize the time allotted in the debate."

Moderators for the debate have yet to be announced, according to the news release. It will be aired live by CNN, CNN International, CNN en Español, CNN Max, and  CNN.com .

The candidates have also accepted a second invitation from ABC to attend a debate on Sept. 10.

“Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020," Biden said in a video released Wednesday as reported by Capitol Beat. "Since then he hasn’t shown up for a debate. Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal, I’ll even do it twice."

“I am Ready and Willing to Debate Crooked Joe at the two proposed times in June and September,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social website, noted Capitol Beat. "Let's get ready to Rumble!!!"

Biden and Trump agree to debates in late June and September

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump agreed Wednesday to participate in general election debates on June 27 and Sept. 10, ending speculation about whether general election debates would happen at all.

CNN will host the first debate in late June at 9 p.m. at its studios in Atlanta, it said in a news release. ABC News said it will host the September debate.

The matchups between the current and former presidents quickly came about Wednesday after the Biden campaign proposed a new debate schedule ahead of the Nov. 5 general election.

"To ensure candidates may maximize the time allotted in the debate, no audience will be present," said CNN, which named Jake Tapper and Dana Bash as co-moderators.

The agreement came just hours after Biden challenged Trump to two debates hosted in a television studio ahead of the November election — a departure from the traditional system.

Trump quickly responded to that challenge, saying he disagreed with Biden's call not to debate in front of a crowd, but he accepted the proposed dates and indicated he, too, was eager to debate.

The public   agreement follows private back-channel discussions about possible meetings. Officials with the Biden and Trump campaigns have had informal conversations about debates in recent weeks, focused on meetings that would not involve the Commission on Presidential Debates, the organization that has coordinated presidential debates for decades, according to two sources familiar with the conversations, as well as a Trump campaign official.

The Trump campaign official told NBC News that “contacts” between the two campaigns related to potential debates began after Biden’s interview with radio host Howard Stern late last month, in which Biden said he would be “happy” to debate Trump. Afterward, the Trump campaign official said some brief discussions between the two 2024 teams took place.

“For months, President Trump has said as clearly as anyone can: any time, anywhere, any place,” this person said. “So that is the most important thing above all of this other speculation."

Biden's campaign chair, Jen O'Malley Dillon, referred to Trump's comments about his willingness to debate, saying in a statement that there would be "no more games."

"President Biden made his terms clear for two one-on-one debates, and Donald Trump accepted those terms," she said in a statement. "No more games. No more chaos, no more debate about debates. We’ll see Donald Trump on June 27th in Atlanta — if he shows up."

Preparing for a debate in just six weeks could be a challenge for Biden, especially as he is set to travel to Europe twice in the previous weeks — for the D-Day 80th anniversary in France and the G-7 Summit in Italy. But one senior Biden adviser said that “early prep is overrated,” while another said simply: “He’s ready to go.”

Ron Klain, Biden’s former chief of staff, said he expects to reprise his role in helping organize debate prep for 2024 as he did in 2020. Bob Bauer, a former White House counsel and now personal attorney to Biden, played the role of Trump in mock sessions four years ago; advisers would not yet say whether he planned to reprise the role.

After Biden and Trump made it clear Wednesday morning that they wanted to debate each other, Biden said on X that he had accepted an invitation from CNN to participate in the June 27 debate.

"Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place," Biden said.

Shortly after, a Trump aide said the campaign agreed to the CNN debate in Atlanta — and to the fact there will be no crowd for that first debate.

Biden and Trump said later in the morning that they had accepted an invitation by ABC News to participate in a second debate on Sept. 10.

“Trump says he’ll arrange his own transportation," Biden said on X. "I’ll bring my plane, too. I plan on keeping it for another four years.”

Trump said on Truth Social: "It is my great honor to accept the CNN Debate against Crooked Joe Biden, the WORST PRESIDENT in the History of the United States and a true Threat to Democracy, on June 27th. Likewise, I accept the ABC News Debate against Crooked Joe on September 10th. Thank you, DJT!"

In a subsequent Truth Social post Wednesday afternoon, Trump pushed for an additional debate on Fox News, which he said would take place Oct. 2 and be hosted by anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

Donald Trump And Joe Biden Participate In First Presidential Debate

CNN’s debate criteria leave open the possibility of other candidates’ joining the stage, but it would be difficult.

Independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has already hit CNN’s 15% national polling threshold  in  two qualifying polls , with just two more needed to fulfill the polling criteria. But the network also announced that for a candidate to participate, “a candidate’s name must appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold to win the presidency prior to the eligibility deadline,” which appears to be June 20.

Many state deadlines for independent ballot access are after that date. In Ohio, for example, Kennedy’s campaign has announced it has gathered the needed signatures to appear on the ballot.  But The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported last week  that the campaign would wait to turn in signatures for certification until closer to the state deadline, which is Aug. 7.

In a post on X, Kennedy wrote Wednesday morning that  Biden and Trump “are trying to exclude me from their debate because they are afraid I would win.”

Coordination of the debates developed Wednesday after O’Malley Dillon, Biden’s campaign chair, wrote in a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates that Biden wouldn't participate in any of its debates and would instead do only those hosted directly by news outlets.

"We believe the first debate should be in late June, after Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial is likely to be over and after President Biden returns from meeting with world leaders at the G7 Summit," O'Malley Dillon wrote.

She added that it should be hosted by any broadcast organization that hosted a 2016 GOP primary debate in which Trump participated and a Democratic primary debate in 2020 in which Biden participated.

"A second presidential debate should be held in early September at the start of the fall campaign season, early enough to influence early voting, but not so late as to require the candidates to leave the campaign trail in the critical late September and October period," the letter said.

Trump responded Wednesday morning on Truth Social that he agrees to the proposed times: "I am Ready and Willing to Debate Crooked Joe at the two proposed times in June and September. I would strongly recommend more than two debates and, for excitement purposes, a very large venue, although Biden is supposedly afraid of crowds — That’s only because he doesn’t get them. Just tell me when, I’ll be there."

"Let's get ready to Rumble!!!" he added.

O'Malley Dillon listed proposed rules: firm time limits for answers and alternating turns to speak "so that the time is evenly divided and we have an exchange of views, not a spectacle of mutual interruption." She added that a candidate’s microphone should be active only when it is his turn to speak.

The letter also proposed that the vice presidential debate should be held in late July after the Republican National Convention.

She said the Biden campaign opposes the Commission on Presidential Debates’ events because they are scheduled to "begin after the American people have a chance to cast their vote early, and doesn’t conclude until after tens of millions of Americans will have already voted." She said that the commission's debates have become "huge spectacles with large audiences" and that they should just be the two candidates in TV studios with the moderators. O'Malley Dillon also said the commission didn't enforce its own rules in 2020.

Along with the letter, Biden posted a brief video on X challenging Trump to debate him. He joked that he hears Trump is free on Wednesdays, alluding to Trump's New York criminal trial, which isn't in session that day.

"Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020," he said. "Since then, he hasn't shown up for a debate. Now he's acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal. I'll even do it twice. So let's pick the dates, Donald. I hear you're free on Wednesdays."

For his part, Trump indicated in Feb r uary that he wanted to debate Biden "immediately," saying: "I’d like to debate him now because we should debate. We should debate for the good of the country."

In a letter in April, Trump’s co-campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita said in a letter that the debates should be held as early as possible . “While the Commission on Presidential Debates has already announced three presidential debates and a vice-presidential debate to occur later this year, we are in favor of these debates beginning much earlier."

The letter made clear Trump's campaign is also in favor of moving up the debates because it would give voters a chance to see the candidates before they cast their ballots. They also said they would support adding even more debates, in addition to the three the commission had previously scheduled.
