Should I Drive Iceland’s South Coast or the Golden Circle?

I n recent years, Iceland has emerged as a must-do on travelers bucket list with a vengeance. Some aren’t even sure why they desire to go there with such a feverish passion. All they know is that it’s one of those places you “have to go” because it’s “amazing”. Once you’ve taken the big leap and decided to go, another vital question comes up. What is there to see and do in Iceland? You’ve probably heard a lot about driving around the South Coast and the Golden Circle. These are both plausible options due to their proximity to Reykjavik. If you can only choose one, let’s see what both have to offer in order to make your decision process easier.

You’ve picked up your rental from Keflavik or the city center, you’re ready to head out into the great beyond. Now it’s up to you to take your preferences and priorities into account when making your decision. Time is also a major factor to consider, so let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages choosing either the Golden Circle route or Iceland’s South Coast.

Day Trips from Reykjavik

There are a lot of different options available for day trips from Reykjavik. One of the most popular is the Golden Circle. Not only is it close, but you’ll also find some of Iceland’s best highlights. The circular route takes you around Thingvellir National Park, the famous Strokkur and Geysir geyers, and Europe’s most powerful waterfall: Gullfoss . You can explore all of these sites in the span of six to eight hours.

Advantages of Exploring the Golden Circle

One of the best things about the Golden Circle is that it’s perfect for a day trip from Reykjavik. If you’re short on time or your trip to Iceland is only a flying visit, this could be your perfect option. You pack in some of the things Iceland is most famous for (geysers and waterfalls) while also getting to explore the country’s history and geology at Thingvellir National Park . Adventure seekers can also go scuba diving in the park’s Silfra fissure.

Disadvantages of Exploring the Golden Circle

While there are some pretty interesting things to see on the Golden Circle route, some would argue that you miss a lot if you only spend time touring this area. The South Coast of Iceland is much more diverse and offers what are arguably more impressive spots.

Advantages of Exploring the South Coast

The South Coast has a lot to offer in terms of the sheer number of cool things to do. From glacier hikes to abandoned plane wrecks on black sand beaches, it’s hard to believe that so many amazing activities are all packed into an area so small. The sites that are farthest away from each other are all within a day’s drive, and it’s up to you do decide where you want to stop. Some places of interest along Iceland’s South Coast include Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfall, the DC-3 plane wreck at Sólheimasandur beach, the small town of Vik along with the black sand beaches and basalt columns in Reynisfjara peninsula, and all of the wonders of Vatnajökull National Park.

At the park, you can hike on a glacier, explore an ice cave or a glacier cave, or even take a boat ride among a sea of icebergs at the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Last but not least is the Diamond Beach, with remnants of icy glaciers. They range in size from medium size rocks to ones as large as an SUV! And all of these sights are contained within a 235-mile (380 km) radius of Reykjavik. Hard to believe, right?

Disadvantages of Exploring the South Coast

The main disadvantage of traveling on the South Coast is the constraint of time. Because there are so many cool things to see and do, you’ll really need more than just a simple day trip from Reykjavik to take it all in. If you try to see everything in one day, not only will you feel rushed and not dedicate enough time to each location, you’ll also be exhausted after driving so many hours while trying to cram everything in. It’s pretty much impossible to do everything on the South Coast in a day unless you keep driving and never leave the car. And where’s the fun in that?

You’ll want to do things on your own schedule while leaving plenty of time to hike and walk around each of the sites, take pictures, and participate in any tours or excursions that pique your interest. Vatnajökull in and of itself will take at least a day! If you’re pressed for time on your Iceland trip, I recommend driving to Vik and stopping at the sights along the way on day one. Day two can be used to hike the glacier at Vatnajökull , visiting Diamond Beach, and going for a boat ride in the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Of course, we recommend more than two days but if you have a major time crunch, then a couple of days is the bare minimum. Some people spend their entire 5-day itinerary here while others make it a stop on a 7-day itinerary around Iceland’s Ring Road.

Other Itinerary Options in Iceland

If you have some extra time, try driving to the Snaefellsnes peninsula. We’ve written a post about popular activities and attractions in the peninsula. The zone in western Iceland lies two hours north of Reykjavik, also making it ideal for a day trip from the capital. All international travelers land in Reykjavik and many will simply stay here the whole time and use it as their base.

Whether you choose to drive the Golden Circle route or along Iceland’s South Coast will ultimately come down to two factors. How much time do you have and what do you want to see and do? If seeing some highlights in a short amount of time is fine for you, go with the Golden Circle. There are definitely some impressive sites along the way. If you’re looking for more adventurous activities and have the time, definitely go for the South Coast. You won’t want to miss hiking Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall and Europe’s largest national park. Whichever you choose, you’re sure to have a great time.

The total duration of this itinerary can be around 11 hours. If you only want to experience the Golden Circle, that is about 8 to 9 hours.

This itinerary takes about 10 hours.

There is another itinerary that will take you all the way to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon , which is the longest one day tour from Reykjavik to the South Coast, and it goes like this:

• 3rd stop: Stjórnarfoss waterfall, it captivates with its two-stage cascade, featuring a symmetrical dome-shaped rock formation and a mysterious atmosphere.
• 4th stop: Vík Village and Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks.
• 5th stop: Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Begin your return journey to Reykjavik, reflecting on the extraordinary sights and experiences of the day.

This itinerary takes about 14 hours as it’s a long drive from Reykjavik to Jokulsarlon and back.

Are you planning a trip to Iceland and wondering whether the Golden Circle or South Coast is the best route for you? Then you’re in the right place!

The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most popular driving route that connects Thingvellir National Park , Gullfoss , and Strokkur . Consider the Golden Circle like a highlight reel , offering a concentrated taste of Iceland’s geological features that’s perfect for those short on time.

If you want the feature-length film , then you’ll want to travel the South Coast. This area showcases more of Iceland’s natural diversity, including black sand beaches, dramatic cliffs, and vast glaciers.

If you only have 24 hours in Iceland, the Golden Circle is the best option – especially if you’re staying in Reykjavik. The South Coast is simply too far from the capital city, so trying to squeeze it into a short trip would result in more driving and less sightseeing. This is ultimately what I ended up doing during my 30 hour layover.

On the other hand, if you want to experience more of Iceland’s natural beauty and your trip is at least 5 days, then you’ll love the South Coast. And with that amount of time, it’s possible to do both! I ended up driving the Golden Circle and the South Coast in the first half of my 10 days in Iceland and it was incredible.

⭐ BEST SIGHTSEEING: South Coast , primarily due to its sheer breadth of natural wonders. Although the choice was tough, especially considering how incredible it is to snorkel in Silfra and experience Gullfoss up-close, the South Coast and its diverse landscapes comes out on top as the ultimate winner.

The Golden Circle is a year-round travel circuit that houses Iceland’s most popular attractions.

The route typically starts with a visit to Thingvellir National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s famous for being the birthplace of Iceland’s parliament and the convergence of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It’s also a must-visit for Game of Thrones fans who want to see the Bloody Gate in real life.

Next stop is the Haukadalur Geothermal Area where you can see Strokkur shoot hot water up to 30 meters in the air, once every 8-10 minutes.

The final highlight of the Golden Circle route (and my personal favorite) is Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic and powerful waterfalls. Often referred to as the “Golden Waterfall”, Gullfoss is where most visitors get their first glimpse into the sheer raw power and beauty of Iceland’s natural landscape.

The South Coast offers a different type of scenic beauty with black sand beaches, towering waterfalls, and glittering glaciers .

The route usually starts with a stop at Seljalandsfoss , famously known as the waterfall you can walk behind. While its cascading falls are beautiful anytime of year, it’s especially incredible in the summer months when there’s unending sunlight.

Close by, you’ll find another waterfall named Skógafoss . This waterfall curtain has a dramatic 60-meter drop that cascades all year long, but is particularly stunning in winter when it’s surrounded by snowy cliffs.

Near Vik, one of the main villages in South Iceland, you’ll find Reynisfjara black sand beach and its towering basalt columns. If you drive past Vik to Skaftafell , you’ll find the crown jewels of Iceland’s South Coast- Vatnajokull (Iceland’s largest glacier), Jökulsárlón ( Glacier Lagoon), and Diamond Beach .

Activities in Golden Circle vs. South Coast

⭐ BEST ACTIVITIES: The South Coast of Iceland simply has more things to do compared to Golden Circle. Snorkeling in Silfra and the Zodiac Boat Tour in Jökulsárlón are tied for my favorite activity in Iceland but I also loved walking to Bruarfoss, hiking Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, and horseback riding in Hverargerdi, all of which are found on the South Coast.

One of the best things to do in the Golden Circle is snorkeling in Silfra where you can swim in the fissure between the North America and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The glacial waters here are so clear and pure that it can’t sustain marine life. While you won’t see any fish, you will be able to swim through crystal clear waters admiring the underwater landscapes formed by the tectonic plates. You can do this activity year-round but is one of my favorite activities to do in Iceland in the summer.

Aside from snorkeling, here are some other activities to do in or close to the Golden Circle:

• Snowmobile at Langjökull Glacier : After visiting Gullfoss, head to Langjokull and experience the thrill of riding over one of Iceland’s largest glaciers. If it’s cold enough, you can even do a combo tour that includes snowmobiling and exploring an ice cave.
• Relax at Laugarvatn Fontana: Soak in the warmth of natural hot springs and geothermal baths after visiting Thingvellir National Park.
• Visit Friðheimar Tomato Farm: Get off the beaten path and head to Friðheimar for a unique opportunity to taste and learn about cultivating tomatoes in a geothermal greenhouse.
• Hike the Rim of Kerið Crater Lake: If volcanic craters are your thing, then consider walking the outer rim of Kerið Crater Lake for a panoramic view of the bright blue lake surrounded by red volcanic rock.

Beyond sightseeing, there are plenty of things to do on the South Coast of Iceland to immerse yourself in the stunning landscape of this region. Here are some activities to consider, most of which center around hiking , waterfalls , and glaciers :

• Horseback Riding: A horseback ride through the stunning landscapes near Hverargerdi, Vik, or elsewhere on the South Coast is a great way to take in the region’s unique landscapes. I remember our ride through the woods in Reykjadalur Valley felt like entering a European enchanted forest but I’m confident every region will have its own charm.
• Take a Dip in Reykjadalur Hot Spring: Relax in the natural hot springs near Hveragerði while taking in the beautiful surrounding views. The hike to the hot springs is relatively easy and can be done in about an hour.
• Hike Bruarfoss: Known as Iceland’s bluest waterfall, Bruarfoss is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The hike to Bruarfoss takes you through beautiful landscapes, culminating with the stunning view of the icy blue water itself.
• Hike Skógafoss: If you can’t get enough of Skogafoss, then consider hiking upriver from Skógafoss waterfall and spend as long as you like exploring the surrounding greenery, canyons, and waterfalls.
• Hike Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon: Featured in Justin Bieber’s music video, this ancient canyon with its steep sides and winding river provides great views of untouched Icelandic landscape that is worth visiting.
• Explore Skaftafell National Park: Skaftafell is an area within Iceland’s Vatnajökull National Park, Europe’s biggest glacier outside the arctic. The park offers a wide variety of activities catering to different difficulty levels and interests, including paved trails, waterfall hikes, glacier hikes, and more.
• Take a Zodiac Boat Tour in Jökulsárlón : Experience the Glacier Lagoon via zodiac boat and ride between the floating icebergs. Every day is a different experience as the Lagoon grows and changes with each visit.

Driving Time in Golden Circle vs. South Coast

⭐ SHORTER DRIVING TIME: The Golden Circle can be completed in a single day (including stops), making it the best way to experience Iceland’s natural beauty without spending too much time on the road.

Navigating the Golden Circle is a relatively quick journey, typically taking around 1 hour to drive the entire route without stops and about 3-4 hours including stops at the 3 main attractions.

In contrast to the South Coast which can take up to 5-6 hours of driving time alone not including stops or activities, the Golden Circle is a more efficient option for those with limited time in Iceland. This is especially true if you’ll be based in Reykjavik, as its proximity makes it an ideal day trip for those based in the city.

Driving the South Coast of Iceland is a considerably larger undertaking than the Golden Circle. Without stopping, the drive alone can take 5-6 hours without stops, but to truly appreciate the region and enjoy all the amazing activities it offers, a day trip will barely scratch the surface.

Unlike the easy accessibility of the Golden Circle, the South Coast simply requires a longer time commitment. While it’s possible to do a day trip from Reykjavik, it’s much better to have at least 2-3 days to truly explore and experience the region fully.

Golden Circle vs. South Coast in Winter

⭐ GOLDEN CIRCLE VS. SOUTH COAST IN WINTER: While the Golden Circle is easier to navigate in winter, the South Coast is simply more picturesque. If you’re a comfortable winter driver and can remain flexible in your plans, then the raw, unspoiled beauty of the South Coast in its winter cloak of snow is an experience you won’t want to miss.

During the winter months, the Golden Circle and its 3 main sites transform under a blanket of snow. In particular, Gullfoss becomes a stunning snowcape, with its cascading waterfall flowing through ice-fringed canyons and plunging down into the frozen river.

It’s also easier to drive the Golden Circle in winter, as the roads are well maintained and experience less icy conditions compared to other areas.

The South Coast in winter is simply enchanting. Not only do popular sites like Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss take on a whole new level of beauty amidst their snowy surroundings, but winter is the best time to explore nature-made ice caves or take a glacier hike across Vatnajokull .

However, planning a trip to the South Coast in winter requires confident driving skills and flexibility in your plans. Compared to the Golden Circle, driving in the South Coast is more susceptible to snow-laden roads that required skillful navigation and sudden weather changes that can disrupt travel plans, especially as you head east.

If you’re looking to visit both the Golden Circle and Iceland’s South Coast (which I’d personally recommend), then consider completing the Golden Circle in 1 day and then spending 2-3 days in the South Coast. Here’s a sample 3-day Golden Circle and South Coast Itinerary that allows you to experience both in the same trip:

• Day 1: Start your drive along the Golden Circle , with Thingvellir National Park as your first stop. Afterwards, head to Geysir in the Haukadalur Valley to see Strokkur erupt before ending the day at Gullfoss.
• Day 2: Drive along the South Coast to Vik, where you can explore Seljalandsfoss , Skogafoss , and Reynisfjnara Black Sand Beach. Depending on your interests and time, you can also add horseback riding and hiking Bruarfoss as additional options.
• Day 3: Continue your drive along South Iceland and head east towards the land of the glaciers. Depending on the time of year, you can spend your time hiking in Skaftafell National Park , glacier hiking or ice caving in Vatnajokull , or visiting Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and the nearby Diamond Beach . You can also add Fjadrargljufur Canyon as an option if you have enough time.

Final Thoughts: So Which is Better? Golden Circle or South Coast Iceland

Choosing between the Golden Circle and the South Coast of Iceland primarily depends on how much time you have .

If you have little time and want a taste of Iceland’s most famous sights, the Golden Circle route offers a quick and convenient option. Here, you’ll get to travel to the Geysir geothermal area, see the cascading falls of Gullfoss, and walk through Thingvellir National Park, home to the first Icelandic parliament.

On the other hand, if you have more time and want more adventure, then the South Coast is the way to go. This route along the famous Ring Road takes you through a diverse range of landscapes, from waterfalls to black sand beaches to glaciers. Between Vik and Hofn, you’ll be able to walk behind Seljalandsfoss, stand at the base of Skógafoss waterfall, walk on the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, and bear witness to the incredible Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

This is why I’d highly recommend spending at least a week in Iceland so you can see both the Golden Circle and the South Coast, as well as East and North Iceland .

The Golden Circle

Start your journey by visiting the Golden Circle’s three most prominent natural attractions. At the Geysir Geothermal Area, witness the eruptions of boiling water up to 25m high every 5 to 10 minutes from Strokkur, Iceland’s most active hot spring. Then, in Thingvellir National Park, step between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and witness Iceland’s oldest still-existing parliament, founded in 930 CE. The first day of the tour takes you to the renowned Golden Circle. First up is Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Icelandic Parliament, the Alþingi, was established in 930 CE, making it the world’s oldest continuously operating parliament. This historic location is situated in a geologically fascinating area with a rift valley between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The magnificent Law Rock, where the Law Speaker would make speeches, offers stunning views over the beautiful Þingvallavatn lake and its unique surroundings.

Afterward, you’ll visit the Geysir Geothermal Area to witness the energetic Strokkur geyser erupting every 5 to 10 minutes, spouting boiling water up to 25 meters high. Although Geysir itself is dormant, the nearby geothermal features are still an impressive sight.

The last stop on the Golden Circle is the majestic Gullfoss, the most-visited waterfall in Iceland. Here, the mighty Hvita River cascades down two tiers of cliffs into the rugged canyon below, creating a stunning golden mist that will leave you breathless.

On day two of your tour, we will travel towards the magnificent Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. The lagoon is a dreamlike procession of icebergs of various shapes and sizes, gliding towards the Atlantic’s salty waves. The ice compression causes multifaceted colors that are truly stunning.

At Diamond Beach, many icebergs are washed ashore, glittering like diamonds on the black sand. As you walk on the beach, sunlight illuminates the bright blue tones of the icebergs, and you might be lucky enough to spot playful seals and abundant ocean birds. Your hotel for the night will be in the Skaftafell area, which is a great base for Northern Lights viewing if you are traveling during the September to April months.

From Jokulsarlon, we’ll head to Skaftafell Nature Reserve for an exciting adventure. From October to April, our certified glacier guide will take us on a beautiful glacier hike, and we’ll explore the mesmerizing world of the Vatnajokull Glacier. Afterward, we’ll enter a natural ice cave where you’ll have time to explore and take photos. Expert guides will explain how these glacial ice formations came to be, and photographers can capture the rare chance of mysterious blue light passing through the glacial ice. From May to September, we’ll visit the only natural ice cave you can visit all year – the Katla Ice Cave tour near Vik.

The ice cave we visit will be chosen based on current conditions. Our adventure will include both ice cave and glacier hike exploration, and we’ll spend approximately two hours on the ice. This tour is suitable for people who can comfortably walk for around two hours on easy outdoor terrain. Ice cave temperatures are well below freezing, so don’t forget to dress warmly. You’ll stay at the same hotel for the night – Adventure Hotel Geirland.

Day 3 of the itinerary begins with a wholesome breakfast before we hit the road to Reykjavik, taking our time to explore various attractions en route. If the roads are clear, we’ll make a quick stop at the stunning Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon before moving on to Eldhraun lava field. We’ll then head to Reynisfjara black beach, where you can witness the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean as it crashes onto the black sand. Be cautious though, as the waves can be unpredictable, and it’s essential to heed your tour guide’s advice.

Before leaving the beach, be sure to visit the black basalt cave and take a moment to marvel at the Reynisdrangar basalt columns just off the shore, which are believed to have inspired Icelandic troll folklore.

We’ll then proceed to our next stop, Skógafoss, a magnificent waterfall cascading 60m into a serene pool. Though the climb up the 527 steps to the top is steep, the panoramic view is worth the effort. If visibility is good, you may catch a glimpse of the famous volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, towering above the waterfall.

After our last stop at Skógafoss, our 3-day tour of Iceland’s South Coast concludes, and we’ll head back to Reykjavík, expecting to arrive between 16:00 and 19:00, depending on the weather conditions.

Day 1 - The Golden Circle

Day one of your South Iceland tour is an exciting exploration of the attractions on the Golden Circle sightseeing route.

After meeting your guide and boarding the bus in Reykjavik, you'll leave the city ready to see some of Iceland's best-known natural attractions.

Your first stop is Thingvellir National Park, a place of great historical and geological significance.

Here, you'll witness the remarkable sight of two tectonic plates pulling apart. The national park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where the North American and Eurasian plates meet. You can walk between these massive plates, feeling a unique connection to the earth.

Day 1 | Golden Circle & Kerid Volcanic Crater

Your three-day tour will begin with a convenient collection from your accommodation in Reykjavik and a delightful drive out of the capital city through striking scenery, passing Mount Esja on our way to the Thingvellir National Park, the first stop on the Golden Circle.

Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir is Iceland’s most important historical site, a place where Viking chieftains declared laws and made alliances for nearly a thousand years. Home to the Althingi, thought to be the world’s first democratic parliament, Thingvellir is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s a superb natural setting too, as immense fissures in the Earth’s crust have been splitting the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here for millions of years. That means that you can stand with one foot on each continent at the same time!  

Geysir & Haukadalur Geothermal Area

Our next stop is the Haukadalur Geothermal area, where you’ll find Geysir, the original hot-water spout after which all other geysers around the world are named. Strokkur sits nearby, a reliable “old faithful” spout which sends cascades of super-heated water up to 30 meters into the sky every six or seven minutes in a dazzling display. Just remember to stand upwind to avoid a shower! There are lots of hissing hotpots and bubbling streams to see here too.

Gullfoss - The Golden Waterfall

The Golden Circle is also the home of Iceland’s most famous waterfall, Gullfoss. “The Golden Waterfall” is a roaring double-drop waterfall, with millions of glacial gallons continuously cascading into a deep ravine. Sheets of spray hang in the air and on sunlit days, sparkling rainbows make Gullfoss an unforgettable sight. Powered by meltwater from the nearby Langjokull glacier, it’s possible to see Gullfoss from several viewing platforms at varying heights.

Kerid Volcanic Crater

As an added extra to the standard Golden Circle tour, you’ll next see the colorful Kerid crater. Kerid is an unusual Icelandic volcano because it’s streaked with red earth and green mosses too. Combined with the blue-water caldera lake, the stunning mix of colors makes it a magnificent sight to see. It’s even possible to walk down to the crater’s bottom for a closer look.

After exploring four incredible attractions located on the Golden Circle Route you will arrive in Hveragerði, a town renowned for its vibrant geothermal activity. Not only will you have the chance to witness a smaller version of Geyser, but you can also indulge in a relaxing dip in the warm, naturally heated waters.

Be sure to pack your swimwear and end your day in the famous Icelandic geothermal pools! There is no better way to enhance your evening! Hot Tubs are located at or by your hotel and entrance is included.

Day 2 | South Coast Waterfalls & Black Beach

The second day of our tour will take us on a glorious drive along the famous Ring Road through the farm country of the South Coast. We’ll pass through the little towns of Selfoss and Hvolsvollur, where we’ll take a short break. On the way, you’ll be able to see the Atlantic Ocean, and on bright days the Westman Islands will be visible too. Inland, there will be impressive views of mountains and glaciers to catch the eye, as well as the brooding presence of Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano.

Seljalandsfoss & Gljufrabui Waterfalls

Our first stop on the South Coast section of the tour brings us to Seljalandsfoss, which will have been coming into view as we head eastwards. We’ll take you first to the “hidden” waterfall of Gljufrabui, which cascades into a concealed cave that many other visitors miss altogether. It’s an extraordinary feeling to be so close to a waterfall like this. The waterfalls here are all fuelled by Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano whose last great eruption put a stop to air traffic for weeks in 2010, making Iceland famous all over the world. A few minutes away lies Seljalandsfoss itself, a much larger waterfall that gracefully plunges from a 60-meter high cliff-face into a deep pool. Seljalandsfoss has featured in many films and music videos, including one for Justin Bieber.

Skogafoss Waterfall

Skogafoss rivals Gullfoss as the most famous waterfall in the country now. Probably one of the most recognized waterfalls in the world, Skogafoss is a sensational sight at any time of year. It has been seen in “Game of Thrones”, several Hollywood films and many music videos too. Skogafoss faces directly south, which means that there’s a great chance to see rainbows arching over the 60-meter-high cascade. It’s possible to climb some stairs right up to the top to see the Skoga river fall into the plunge pool and then make its way out to the sea.

Black Beach of Reynisfjara

The last stop on this second day of our tour is the fabulous black sand beach at Reynisfjara. Here dark volcanic sands stretch for miles, with powerful Atlantic waves crashing into the Reynisdrangar, a collection of brooding rock formations that lie just out to sea. There’s also an astonishing cliffside stack of basalt columns resembling a church organ that has to be seen to be believed. The stone arches of Dyrholaey can also be seen far out to sea. Watch your step as you explore and take pictures – the waves are often faster and stronger than you think!

OVERNIGHT STAY ON THE COUNTRYSIDE

If we are lucky with the weather and if the aurora is active, we will make the best use of the low light pollution in this area to try to see them. Remember though – the Northern Lights are not “switched on” every day!

Day 3 | Glacier Lagoon & Blue Ice Cave

The third day of our South Coast adventure takes us further east into the Vatnajokull National Park. 

Diamond Beach

First stop stop is the astounding Diamond Beach, where the glittering fragments of icebergs are slowly being sculpted into weird and wonderful shapes by the wind and waves. Lying on the vivid black sand beach like diamonds on a velvet cushion, the ice formations here are incredible. We will bring you here first, to make sure that you get the best photos, before taking you to the place the icebergs come from – the Glacier Lagoon at Jokulsarlon.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Just a few hundred yards inland lies the spectacular glacier lagoon of Jokulsarlon, a place featured in Batman and James Bond films. Here, enormous multi-colored icebergs tear themselves away from the Breidamerkurjokull glacier and then spend as long as five years making their way slowly out to sea, swaying back and forth and ever-changing in shape and size. Some of the bergs are striped with volcanic ash from ancient eruptions, so you’re seeing geological time on display here. Seals and seabirds make their home here too, so look out for them as they bask in the sun.

Blue Ice Cave exploration

The highlight of our South Coast tour is a three-hour expedition to explore a unique natural blue ice cave. Jump onboard a Super Jeep with us to find this rare phenomenon deep in a glacier, something that really displays the tremendous forces of Icelandic nature. Blue ice caves are formed naturally in glaciers when fresh water freezes in the plunging winter temperatures, with new caves created each year as the glaciers freeze and melt in different shapes. It’s a mesmerizing sight to see, with fantastic shapes in a range of colors. Our local guides will take you to the most impressive blue ice caves to be found here in the Vatnajokull National Park. Once you’ve been there, that blue ice cave may never exist again, so this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Hofskirkja Church & Lava Fields

Hofskirkja is thought to be among the last turf churches to be built in Iceland, dating back to the 19 th  century. Layers of green turf lie on the roof of this story-book church, surrounded by moss-covered burial mounds, which makes it look like it’s melting into the landscape around it. Rebuilt in the 1950s, locals still worship here now, so this will be a quick stop for a photograph.

After visiting this unique place, we’ll begin to make our way back to the capital city. As we head west, the landscape becomes more desolate as we pass through the Eldhraun lava field, a flat coastal area filled with rugged rock formations. 

Vik Village

Vik is the most southerly village in the country and a busy spot for resting Ring Road travelers. There is a beautiful hilltop church which has fantastic views of the coast, including the Reynisdrangar. We’ll stop here so that you can take some great pictures from this vantage point.

Proper footwear when walking on uneven and slippery surfaces increases your safety and comfort. Please note, that you can be banned from participating in glacier activities when not wearing required shoes. If you do not own proper footwear (solid shoes reaching above your ankle) you can rent them during booking process

For your convenience and safety reasons, it is recommended that you pack lightly for this tour, in a small suitcase or backpack. If you have large luggage with you, please check with your accommodation if they offer luggage storage for your time on this tour. When you complete your booking, you’ll be asked to choose a pick up and drop off location. Where possible, we will collect you directly from your hotel .

Some parts of the city have traffic restrictions, so you’ll need to go to a designated bus stop for collection instead if your hotel is in that area.

There’s a 30-minute window for collection while we pick up other passengers from their locations.

At the end of your tour, you’ll be dropped off at the same place unless you choose to get off at another stop instead – that’s your choice! Drop off can also take up to 30 minutes.

Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable, so you’ll need to prepare appropriately, whatever the time of year for your tour.

That means choosing the right clothes (light layers), shoes (sturdy and waterproof) and coats (windproof & waterproof). And not wearing jeans, just in case it rains!

We’ve prepared a detailed guide for you to read, full of tips and tricks to help you know what to wear, what to bring and what to leave behind! 

If you’re booking a multi-day tour of up to three days, the maximum “carry-on” bag size is 22 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm or 22 x 18 x 10 inches)

If your multi-day tour is longer than three days, then your ticket includes “carry-on” (see above) and 24 inch “checked” baggage sized no bigger than 60 x 41 x 23 cm (24 x 16.4 x 9.2 inches)

For shorter tours, you can choose to add “checked” baggage for an additional fee during the booking process.

If you want to guarantee bringing a larger bag on a shorter tour, it is best to book in advance. Oversized luggages can not be taken on board but need to be stored prior the tour at either our office or at one of the public luggage lockers dotted across Reykjavík ( CHECK LOCATIONS & PRICES ).

You’ll enjoy a private room with en suite bathroom facilities and breakfast, WiFi, towels and, in most cases, a kettle for a morning brew.

Outside the capital, most Icelandic hotels are comfortable and unfussy, with friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable staff.

Hotel rooms are sold based on two adults sharing, so single-room occupancy is more expensive as a result.

If you are a solo traveler, we will not assign you a room with a stranger, so the single supplement fee becomes applicable.

If you are two people traveling together and staying in the same room but paying separately, the single supplement fee is not applicable.

Simply add the name of your travel companion in the “special requirements” section when completing your booking.

For couples or groups traveling together, rooms will be assigned according to the number of people who have booked together.

Depending on availability at each location, you may request twin beds if that is your preference.

Larger groups will be accommodated in combinations of triple, double and twin rooms – three people in a triple room, four people in two doubles or twin rooms, five people in one triple and one double, and so on.

If a person in your group would prefer a single room, you must select “single supplement fee” for them when booking.

Solo travelers must pay a single supplement fee in all instances.

Breakfast is included at each overnight location, featuring bread and butter, preserves, boiled eggs, cooked meats, fruits, yoghurts, tea, and coffee.

All other meals are at your own expense.

As the tour continues around the country, you can grab lunch and dinner at each of the scheduled stops, and we’ll offer recommendations if you want them!

Yes. We monitor the weather and road conditions on the tour route to maximize your chance to see Iceland’s attractions at their best.

That means we may change the order or timing of the stops to take advantage of the weather (avoiding rain or snow showers where possible) and “ golden hour” photo opportunities .

If we receive a weather alert from the Icelandic Meteorological Office or roads are closed by the local authorities, we must cancel tours for your safety.

Iceland’s weather is very changeable, meaning changes may occur quickly. If we have to cancel tours, we will send you an email notification immediately .

So please check your email inbox before heading out to the collection point, particularly if the weather looks bad in the city.

Sometimes the weather is worse outside the city, or vice versa!

We schedule our tours carefully to ensure you see Iceland’s natural marvels in daylight, even in the winter when there are more hours of darkness.

Many attractions are also illuminated, adding another layer of magic to the natural splendor! During shortest days, these places are usually visited at dusk or 

In the winter months, tours will begin and end in darkness, but rest assured, you will see all the places you want to see!

Everyone who comes to Iceland in the winter hopes to see the Northern Lights.

This mesmerizing cosmic spectacle is a bucket-list experience, with magical splashes of multi-colored lights dancing across the heavens.

But it’s important to remember that it’s a natural phenomenon, requiring certain levels of solar activity and clear, dark skies.

That means there’s no guarantee that you’ll be lucky enough to see them while you’re in Iceland. 

Our selected hotels are in the remote Icelandic countryside, ideal for spotting the Aurora Borealis, with far less artificial light than in the city.

Wake-up calls can be requested if the Northern Lights are spotted later at night.

On average, we will cover 200-300 kilometers each day, with four to five hours of driving.

We schedule our tours as evenly as possible, with driving distances between each stop varying from 45 minutes to a couple of hours.

You’ll have around 30 to 60 minutes to explore each location, with most attractions just a short walk from the parking lot.

As with everything in Iceland, the precise timings of the tour will depend on weather and road conditions on the day, as our priority is to keep you safe while exploring Iceland.

If you want to bring small children on our tours, we will provide booster seats to ensure their safety and comfort.

Important: bringing children younger than the minimum age stated for each trip is not permitted; please check carefully before submitting your booking.

After the final stop on the tour, we will return to the city. There is no specific time or drop off location – this can differ from the pick up spot. 

You’re free to ask the guide to drop you off in the city center, or back at your collection point, whichever is the most convenient for your evening plans.

You can expect to be dropped off within 30 minutes after the scheduled end of the tour.

All our scheduled group tours are guided in English. Though it is possible to book a private tour guided in other languages. We will try to accommodate your request the best we can!

THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

The Golden Circle is probably the most known route by tourists. It includes three famous attractions in Iceland - Geysir Geothermal Area, Thingvellir National Park, and Gullfoss Waterfall. 

JÖKULSÁRLÓN GLACIER LAGOON, SKAFTAFELL NATURE RESERVE, AND KATLA ICE CAVE

We’ll visit  Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon , one of the most famous glacier lagoons in the world. It is full of floating icebergs from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. Some of these icebergs are later washed into Diamond Beach  and create a beautiful contrast between black sand and ice crystals. 

Skaftafell Nature Reserve  is a beautiful wilderness area within the Vatnajökull National Park. It features the most diverse landscapes, including glaciers, majestic waterfalls, and black sand deserts. 

Katla Ice Cave  is a unique ice formation that lives under a volcano. This isn’t something that you see every day!

SOUTH COAST SIGHTSEEING

South Coast offers a range of incredible highlights.  Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon , also known as “Bieber Canyon” among tourists, is a beautiful 2-kilometer long and 100-meter deep formation. This canyon became particularly popular after the famous singer, after whom the place is nicknamed, filmed his clip there. 

Next on the list is  the   Elhraun lava field . This iconic field formed after one of the greatest volcanic eruptions ever recorded.

Reynisfjara black sand beach  is a true South Coast marvel. It is also one of the most dangerous places in Iceland. The “sneaker waves” phenomenon is common and threatens unsuspecting tourists to pull them to sea.

South Coast is also home to some of the most iconic waterfalls in Iceland.  Skogafoss  and  Seljalandfoss  are some of the most renowned waterfalls in the area, and you’ll be able to visit them!

LANDMANNALAUGAR

Landmannalaugar  is a geothermal paradise of clear blue lakes, rambling lava flows, hot springs, and colored peaks. Its stunning hiking trails attract hikers from all over the world. Hiking through the diverse landscapes of Landmannalaugar is undoubtedly something you wouldn’t want to miss.

Day 1 - The Famous Golden Circle

Our 4-day tour begins with the famous Golden Circle attractions: Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss and Geysir.

Thingvellir National Park is considered to be the birthplace of the Icelandic nation. It is where the first Icelandic parliament gathered in 930 CE. The whole area is a fantastic geological site between the splitting North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It is worth seeing for anyone coming to Iceland who wants to understand this country better.

Next, we'll head to Gullfoss , the Golden Falls, probably Iceland's most known and visited waterfall. The water of the Hvita river thrusting down the two stages is an impressive sight to see. 

Geysir is home to the most active hot spring in Iceland. Strokkur, which is Geysir's "little brother," erupts in boiling water every 5 to 10 minutes!

After a day full of adventures, we'll spend the night near the small town called Kirkjubæjarklaustur .

Day 2 - jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, skaftafell nature reserve.

In the morning, we'll head towards the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the nearby Diamond Beach . The lagoon is filled with icebergs of various sizes and shapes that drift towards the Atlantic. Some of them are washed on the Diamond Beach and glitter-like crystals on the black sand.

After Jokulsarlon, we head to the nearby Skaftafell Nature Reserve . Here, we will visit the info center and watch a short film about the National Park to learn more about the park and the glaciers.

Then, we will hike to the nearby Svartifoss waterfall , one of the most unique waterfalls in Iceland and one of the most popular sights in the park. 

Our accommodation for the night will be at the Adventure Hotel Geirland .

Day 3 - South Coast Sightseeing and Katla Ice Cave

After a delicious breakfast, we'll make our way through the magical South Coast of Iceland. If the road conditions allow it, we'll kick off our day with a small detour to Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon .

Our next stop will be at the iconic Eldhraun lava field , where the powerful volcanic eruption once occurred. 

After this short stop, we'll go to Katla Ice Cave , the only ice cave that can be visited all year round. So, even if you come in the summer, you'll be able to experience what a real ice cave looks like. 

Since temperatures in the ice cave are below zero, we recommend you dress warmly.

Next, we'll head to Reynisfjara Black Sand beach , where you can see the waves of the Atlantic Ocean in their full power. The waves here can be very unpredictable, so you'll have to be extra cautious here. 

After Reynisfjara, we'll visit the impressive 60-meter Skógafoss waterfall . There are 527 steps leading to the fantastic panoramic view from the top. 

After enjoying the day visiting South Coast, we'll get to the Hotel Hella for the night's rest.

Hotel Hella

Day 4 - landmannalaugar hike.

After starting our day with a delicious breakfast, we will drive towards Landmannalaugar, where we will have our hiking experience in Landmannalaugar . The hiking trail is approximately 8-10 km, which will take around 4 hours to finish. This trail goes through the Laugahraun lava field, continuing to Vondugil Canyon, reaching up to Mt. Brennisteinsalda, a multicolored peak that is highly characteristic of the area. On our way back, we'll pass through the Graenagil Gorge, called Green Gorge in Icelandic because of its dominant green color. If there's enough time, we will climb to Blahnukur Volcano before finally soaking in the hot springs and enjoying the surroundings of Landmannalaugar.

We will arrive back in Reykjavik at around 9:00 pm.

Pick up is at 9:00 a.m. from your hotel or a nearby meeting point in Reykjavík. Picking everyone up can take up to 30 minutes. Your patience is much appreciated. Available pick-up points: Arctic Adventures's pick-up list .

Remember to bring: 

Warm outdoor clothing includes layers, thermal underwear (top and bottom), a waterproof jacket and pants, headwear, scarves, and gloves. Sturdy hiking boots are essential for glacier hiking since they are the only kind of footwear that fit ice crampons. Hiking boots for the hike to the ice cave can be rented in the booking process, we recommend renting in advance.

What if I don't own all of these clothing items? 

Don't worry, you can always rent sturdy hiking shoes, a waterproof jacket, and pants in the booking process. However, if you wish to rent extras for the whole duration of the tour then this must be added to your booking at least 48 hours before your tour starts.

The tour starts from Reykjavik, heading to Thingvellir National Park. We shall walk along the Almannagja fissure in the Thingvellir, where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge. Thingvellir served as a parliament place for centuries, from the early Viking settler’s time to the late 18th century.

We will then continue to the Gullfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most stunning landmarks. The falls are 32m/100ft high and are divided into two steps, the falling water flowing through a long, rugged canyon. The Hvita river forms the waterfall, flowing from the Langjokull glacier. In summer, when the amount of meltwater from Langjokull is exceptionally high, it increases to an average of 140 cubic meters per second.

The next stop will be in the Haukadalur, the Valley of Geysers, one of the main attractions of the route. Here, the Strokkur geyser spews a mixture of hot water and steam up to 20-30m/65-100ft every 5-10 minutes. While the other hot springs in the area, led by the great Geysir, are quiet but colorful.

After visiting the three foremost attractions of the Golden Circle route, we head to the South Coast towards Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. Its height is 63 m/210ft, and it is stunningly beautiful. It offers walks along the trail behind the waterfall, which is especially beautiful on a sunny day when you can see the rainbow.

We shall then drive east along the farms at the foot of the former coastline in the Eyjafjoll area and arrive at the mighty Skogafoss, a 60m/200ft waterfall fed by Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glaciers. This majestic waterfall is one of the most visited places in Iceland, and for a good reason. After visiting the waterfall, we recommend stopping for lunch in Skogar.

Next, we continued our journey and stopped for a walk along the coast of Reynisfjara beach, near the village of Vik. It is considered the most impressive black sand beach in Iceland, with unique vertically shifted basalt columns reminiscent of a stone-stepped pyramid. In the water opposite the beach, you will also see the stunningly shaped basalt rocks of Reynisdrangar. Afterward, we will turn around and take the road back to Reykjavik.

Payments for day tours are collected online while booking. We accept major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Pick-up is included in the tour price and arranged from your lodging places or designated bus stops in Reykjavik. Please be ready outside the hotel or in a lobby at the pick-up time mentioned in the tour description. Please contact us, if you like to change a place or time for pick-up.

If your group is larger than 5 people and a minibus used for tour transportation, we have limited possibility for pickups in downtown Reykjavík due to driving/parking restrictions in the area. Then, we shall pick you up from designated bus stops or ask to meet a driver-guide at a nearby location, where we can pick you up. You can also preliminary e-mail us at [email protected] , and we‘ll figure out the best pick up location.

Drop-offs are provided at the same place as pick-up unless otherwise arranged with the driver/guides.

We arrange refreshment stops at cafés or restaurants on every day tour, where you can purchase your lunch and snacks. Therefore, you are not required to bring your food for the tour, however, if you prefer to bring some snacks or drinks, that is accepted. Please note that food and beverages are not included in the tour price.

Nearly all restaurants in Iceland offer some vegetarian food. There is no problem with purchasing vegetarian meals on tours.

The bathrooms are available at visitor centers at many stops on popular routes such as Golden Circle and South Coast. Some bathroom stops are available on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula tour. Your driver-guide will inform you about available places for bathroom stops on the route.

Flexible Policy for Cancellations and Refunds

All Top-Iceland day tours are fully refundable, up to the day of tour delivery. You will receive a full refund of the tour price:

• If you cancel a booking before the start of the tour for any reason. Please note you will not receive any refund if you do not cancel the tour and do not show. Also, timing is calculated following the time zone of the tour;
• If Top-Iceland cancels the tour;
• If You cannot take the tour because of an unforeseeable event that is out of your control (“Unforeseeable Events”).

Refunds will be sent back to the original payment method used in making the booking. Depending on the bank’s processing time, it can take 7 business days for the refunds to reflect in your bank account or card balance.

In general – the earlier, the better. Consider the fact that most of our tours are privately guided, and therefore an availability on certain dates might be limited.

Tipping in Iceland is not required but always appreciated.

Yes, it is requested by Icelandic law to have child seats/boosters. Some families are already traveling on their own, but if you would like us to provide child seats and/or boosters on the tour, please send us an e-mail.

Visit Moscow – Red Square

When people visit Moscow, they always go to Red Square right beside the walls of the Kremlin. Red Square is famous for the colorful spires on St Basil’s Cathedral, which makes the church the most photographed spot in Moscow. In addition to St Basil’s Cathedral, visit Lenin’s Tomb and the State Historical Museum.

Just a few steps from the State Historical Museum and still outside the walls of the Kremlin is the monument to the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame. The historic GUM Department Store faces Red Square on the opposite side from the Kremlin. In winter you can sometimes enjoy outdoor skating on Red Square.

Visit Moscow – the Kremlin

After seeing Red Square, step through the walls of the Kremlin. The Kremlin is a walled fortress that includes palaces, cathedrals, a museum and the office of the President of Russia. In the Kremlin you can see the Great Palace, the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Cathedral of the Annunciation, the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Church of the Deposition of the Robe, the State Armory and the Tsar Bell and Cannon. You can easily spend a full day seeing the sights at the Kremlin and Red Square.

Moscow Metro Stations

After the Kremlin and Red Square, the most popular thing to see and do is to visit Moscow Metro Stations. The Moscow Metro Stations are famous for their fabulous architecture, murals and chandeliers. You can start your own Moscow Metro Station tour at Revolution Square (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) just a short walk from Red Square.

Among the well known stations to visit on your tour are Mayakovskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya and Kurskaya. Craving more Moscow Metro Stations? Golden Circle

Outside Moscow is a beautiful series of Russian villages with traditional churches and kremlins. There are eight towns to visit in the Golden Circle: Sergiyev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Suzdal and Vladimir. You can reach Sergiyev Posad, Suzdal and Vladimir on day trips from Moscow. The other villages will require overnight stays in order to complete the full circle.

Get to Moscow

Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) is the way to get to Moscow by air for international travelers. The Aeroexpress train connects the international airport to Belorusskaya Railway Terminal. Domodedovo International Airport (DME) is also very busy, but concentrates more heavily on domestic flights.

Moscow Weather

Moscow weather is humid year round. June through August are the best months for temperatures, but these are also the months of heavier rainfall and the busiest for tourism. Expect average summer highs of 73 F (23 C) and average lows of 54 F (12 C). The coldest winter months are December – February when average highs are 25 F (-4 C) and average lows are about 16 F (-9 C). So, the summer months from June through August are likely the best time of year to visit Moscow.
