  • How To Get HM04 Strength & the Gold Teeth in Pokémon FRLG

Standing near the Warden's House in Fuchsia City (Pokémon FireRed)

In FireRed & LeafGreen, you can get HM04 Strength by returning the Gold Teeth to the Safari Zone Warden in his house in Fuchsia City.

The Gold Teeth are located deep within the Safari Zone, near the Secret House where you get Surf.

You will need to pay 500 Pokédollars every time you enter the Safari Zone, but you can enter as soon as you reach Fuchsia City.

We’ll show you exactly where to find the Gold Teeth, and then how to return them to the Warden so you can get HM04.

Gold Teeth Location (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: To find the Gold Teeth, start in Fuchsia City and head to the Safari Zone. This will be north of the Pokémon Center.

Step 2: Enter the Safari Zone and pay the 500 Pokédollars for entry.

In the Safari Zone, you are only allowed 500 steps until the timer runs out. When the timer runs out, you’ll be returned to the entrance. Our guide here will teach you how to reach the Gold Teeth with plenty of steps to spare.

Step 3: Once you’re inside the Safari Zone, head north-east until you reach the loading zone going to the next area.

Going right when entering the Safari Zone / Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

It’s worth noting that you can use Repels while inside the Safari Zone. This can help you reach the Gold Teeth faster by avoiding wild Pokémon.

Step 4: In the next area, keep heading east past the bushes.

Step 5: Once you reach some grass and a set of stairs, go up the stairs and head west to descend the staircase on the other side.

Step 6: Go down the stairs here and then turn to north.

Step 7: Keep moving north and eventually you’ll see another set of stairs. Go up this set, and then turn east to go down the stairs on the other side.

Step 8: Go down the other set of stairs, then circle around so you’re behind the large rock platform.

Then start running west through the tall grass.

Step 9: Continue moving west until you enter the next area.

Step 10: Keep heading west past the 1st set of stairs (you’ll enter some tall grass here).

Step 11: Go through the grass and you’ll see a 2nd set of stairs. Go up these 2nd stairs onto the rocky platform.

Step 12: From here, go down the other stairs to your left, then start going north past the rocky platform.

Step 13: Eventually you’ll reach some bushes and trees. Turn east to follow this dirt path.

Step 14: Then turn up and go around the corner, now going towards the western side of this area.

Step 15: Eventually you’ll see another large patch of tall grass. At this point, turn south and run through the grass (past the trees and pools of water).

Step 16: Keep heading south until you find the exit to the next area.

Step 17: In this new area, walk a few paces south and you should see an item on the ground. These are the Gold Teeth.

Step 18: Collect the Gold Teeth on the ground.

Now you can leave the Safari Zone any way you want, but the simplest way is to choose to leave from the menu.

But if there’s more you want to do here then you can run around a bit longer!

Also the Surf HM can be acquired in a house directly west of the Gold Teeth. So if you haven’t picked that up then now would be a great time to snag that as well.

Getting HM04 Strength (Step-by-Step)

To exit the Safari Zone quickly, you can open the menu and choose the retire option to return to the entrance immediately.

You can also use Fly or Teleport while inside the Safari Zone to travel to the Fuchsia City Pokémon Center for a faster exit.

Once you’re back out in Fuchsia City, you’ll need to deliver the Warden’s Gold Teeth back to him and he’ll give you HM04 as a reward.

Step 1: Exit the Safari Zone.

Step 2: Head south from the Safari Zone gate.

Step 3: Directly to the right of the Pokémon Center will be a couple houses.

Enter the first house you see (with the mailbox).

Step 4: Talk to the Safari Zone Warden inside this house and you’ll automatically give him back his Gold Teeth.

He will then give you HM04 Strength as a reward.

Note: To use HM04 Strength outside of battle, you must have beaten the Celadon City Gym Leader Erika and received the Rainbow Badge.

Generation I, FireRed, and LeafGreen [ ]

The player can return the Gold Teeth to their owner, the Safari Zone Warden, in exchange for HM04 (Strength) .

Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go! Eevee [ ]

The player can return the Gold Teeth to their owner, the Safari Zone Warden, to have him teach the Secret Technique Strong Push to their partner Pokémon.

Where to get Strength in Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow

To get the Strength HM, you need to find the Warden's Gold Teeth in Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow!

Did you know that Golduck is 5ft 7" tall? I don't know about you, but I'd back a giant blue duck that's the size of an adult man to move a big rock.

Lots of Pokemon are canonically larger than you'd think, so it makes sense that many of them can learn HM 04 Strength in Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow.

The original Pokemon games are a lot less linear than some of the newer games, and they can be very light on clues for how to proceed too.

Strength is vital for story progression, unlocking the start of Victory Road, as well as optional dungeons like the Seafoam Islands. But up until you need it, it's very easy to totally miss where you're supposed to find the HM. Plus, Strength not only lets you clear paths by moving boulders, but is also a powerful Normal-type move which is useful on lots of great Pokemon!

Here's where to find the Warden's Gold Teeth and get the Strength HM (yes, really)!

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow Strength location

To get the Strength HM in Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow, you need to return the Safari Keeper’s lost golden teeth in Fuschia City.

To find the gold teeth, make your way up to the Safari Zone. From the entrance, walk up and to the right, then right a bit until you reach the raised platform.

Red walking through the first area of the Safari Zone towards the Surf HM in Pokemon Red.

Now go up onto it and left, then up until you reach a second platform you can use to continue around the top of the area until you can go left.

Red walking through the second area of the Safari Zone towards the Surf HM in Pokemon Red.

Go left on the next screen, then up through the grass and use the raised mound to go over to the left.

Red walking through the last area of the Safari Zone towards the Surf HM in Pokemon Red.

From here, turn back on yourself and go up towards the top of the screen, turn right, go up, then go left until you reach the line of trees. Go down and past the scene transition, then the first pokeball below you will be the Gold Teeth!

If you go to the left of the Gold Teeth you can also find the secret house for the Surf HM .

Now wait for your Safari Zone session to expire and head down to the Pokemon Center at the bottom of Fuschia City. In the house to the right of the Pokemon Center, after hopping over the ledge, you can find the Warden's house.

Speak to him and after popping his golden teeth back in his mouth he will reward you with the Strength HM!

You need to have defeated Erika to use Strength outside of battle, but shouldn't be an issue by the time you've reached Fuschia.

Which Pokemon can learn Strength in Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow?

Most Pokemon can learn Strength in Generation 1. Some of them, like Onix, Exeggutor and Arbok, don't even have arms. Normal-types that aren't even vaguely buff, including Chansey, Clefairy and Jigglypuff, can learn Strength. As can some Water-types like Slowpoke, Psyduck and Krabby.

Krabby, in fact, is actually one of the best HM users in the game, since it can learn Surf, Cut and Strength. You can catch one with a fishing rod .

Saffron City

gold teeth safari zone yellow

Saffron City is a sprawling metropolis located in the heart of the region between Cerulean City , Celadon City , Lavender Town , and Vermilion City . The Silph Co. headquarters dominates the city skyline, and two Pokémon Gyms stand in the northeast district. It is the most populous city in all of Kanto .

Mr. Psychic's house

The southeast house belongs to a man known as Mr. Psychic. Speak to him and he claims to know exactly why you are here, and gives you TM29 ( Psychic ).

The Silph Co . is the leading manufacturer of items like Poké Balls, Potions, and TMs. Their products are supplied to every Poké Mart in the region. The company has been a target of Team Rocket , first for their Silph Scope prototype, and now for a top-secret development project. The Rocket Grunt posted outside the building has fallen asleep, leaving a perfect opportunity to sneak inside. The building holds eleven floors, with warp tiles allowing the workers to quickly move around. This convenience ends up acting as a maze for anyone trying to reach the top floor.

It is not possible to open the electronic doors yet, so step on either warp tile to teleport to the eighth floor.

Battle the Scientist and the two Rocket Grunts, then take the elevator down to 3F.

Take the northeast warp tile back to the second floor. Speak to the woman here in the northwest room to receive TM36 ( Selfdestruct ), then warp back to 3F.

Fight the Rocket Grunt and take the warp tile in the southwest to reach 5F; pick up the TM09 ( Take Down ) from the southwest room before returning to 3F.

Climb up the stairs to 4F.

Battle another two Rocket Grunts and climb to the fifth floor.

Fight the Rocket Grunt near the stairs and the Scientist to the west. Follow the hallway southward to reach another Rocket Grunt standing next to a warp tile. Defeat him, step on the warp tile, then warp right back. Turn eastward to find a Card Key , which is used to open the building's electronic doors. Pass by the warp tile again and unlock the northwest room to reach a Protein . Take the stairs up to 6F.

Follow the western hallway past the Scientist and unlock the southwest room to get an HP Up and an X Accuracy . Climb the stairs to 7F.

Use the Card Key to unlock the east-central room and pick up TM03 ( Swords Dance ). Turn around and follow the central hallway to the southwest room. Battle the Scientist and grab the Calcium before taking the stairs up to 9F.

Defeat the Rocket Grunt at the south end of the central hallway, then open the door to the break room. Speak to the woman here, and she heals your Pokémon to full health as thanks for your efforts. Climb the stairs to the tenth floor.

Battle the Scientist and the Rocket Grunt, then pick up the Carbos , Rare Candy , and TM26 ( Earthquake ) from the southwest room. Ride the elevator all the way down to 3F.

Use the Card Key to unlock the central room. Open the door to the west-central room beyond that, defeat the Scientist, and grab the nearby Hyper Potion . Take the warp in the central room.

7F (Northwest)

When you reach the northwest room on the seventh floor, Blue is waiting for you.

Rival Battle 6

Blue has made some changes to his team since the previous battle in Pokémon Tower . He has swapped out his Fearow for a Kadabra , while his Shellder , Magnemite , Vulpix , and Eevee have all evolved.

If Eevee evolved into Vaporeon :

If eevee evolved into jolteon :, if eevee evolved into flareon :.

Afterward, he brags that he will be the world's most powerful Trainer before warping away. Once he leaves, speak to the nearby office worker. Realizing that you are here to save them all, he would like to give you a Pokémon. If you have room in your party, he gives you a Lapras . They had been keeping it in their lab, but he thinks it would be much better off with you. Take the final warp tile to the west side of 11F.

As soon as you move off of the warp tile, you are confronted by Jessie and James again. They claim that their boss is in a meeting and intend to defeat you so that he will not be disturbed.

Use the Card Key to open the door and confront Giovanni . He claims to be having some important business meeting with the company president and warns you to stay out of grown-up matters before drawing you into battle.

VS Giovanni

Giovanni 's Nidorino , Rhyhorn , and Nidoqueen all take serious damage from Ground-type attacks like Dig and Earthquake . The latter two are also vulnerable to Water moves. His Persian only takes super effective damage from Fighting attacks.

With Giovanni defeated, Team Rocket 's plans for Silph Co. have been thwarted. He vows that the group will never fall and promises to return. Giovanni and his underlings make their escape, while their co-conspirators also flee the building. Speak to the president, who is so grateful to you for saving Silph that he rewards you with the Master Ball prototype. This improved kind of Poké Ball has a 100% success rate, so be sure to save it for a hard-to-catch Pokémon.

Copycat's house

Now that the Rockets have left the city, the Grunt outside the northwest house is gone. A girl inside known as the Copycat likes to collect Pokémon dolls . Give her a Poké Doll to receive TM31 ( Mimic ) in return.

Fighting Dojo

gold teeth safari zone yellow

Saffron City is unique as the only city to have two Pokémon Gyms. The Fighting Dojo is located in the northeast neighborhood, next door to the Saffron Gym . The two clubs had once competed to determine which would become the city's one official Gym, and the Psychic Pokémon of Saffron Gym were victorious. There is no Badge to be won here, but defeat the Karate Master to earn the choice of two rare Fighting-type Pokémon: the hard-kicking Hitmonlee or the piston-punching Hitmonchan . Use Psychic- and Flying-type attacks here for greatest effect.

Saffron Gym

gold teeth safari zone yellow

SAFFRON CITY POKéMON GYM LEADER: SABRINA The Master of Psychic Pokémon!

The Saffron Gym specializes in Psychic Pokémon. Only Bug attacks deal super effective damage to them, but the few available Bug moves are relatively weak. Psychic Pokémon typically have low Defense , so it is better to use moves that deal physical damage, like Normal -, Flying -, and Rock-type attacks.

The Gym uses a series of warp tiles to confuse and disorient any challengers. Step on the tile near the entrance to reach the southeast room. To reach the Gym Leader by using as few warps as possible, continue by stepping on the northwest, southwest, and southwest tiles in the following rooms. This leads to the center room, where Sabrina awaits anyone up to the challenge.

After the battle, Sabrina awards you the Marsh Badge , which ensures obedience from all Pokémon up to level 70. She also gives you TM46 ( Psywave ) as a prize.

The next destination is Fuchsia City to the south. There are two paths that lead there: either take Cycling Road west of Celadon City , or follow the coast south of Lavender Town .
