NOT A TOUR TO MISS – SIMPLY DELICIOUS!

We had a wonderful day with Mattia, he was extremely friendly and knowledgable. The food places we visited were all equally delicious and we would’ve missed them as tourists!

THE ABSOLUTE BEST LOCAL FOOD TOUR IN BOLOGNA

We had a fantastic Nightfall Food Tour with Mattia in Bologna. I am a real foodie – I hate tourist trap kind of places and this tour could not have been more perfect for someone like me.

MAKE THIS A PRIORITY FOR YOUR BOLOGNA VISIT!

Mattia lived up to his reputation as a knowledgeable and personable guide to Bologna gastronomy. The limit of only a few people per group, enhances the enjoyment of this tour allowing for much more personal interaction. Clearly his love for the food, people, and history of the city he lives in shines through.

DELICIOUS IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!

We learn about food, taste the dishes and, even better, meet some of the people who make a living in food related businesses. For me, the absolute highlight of this tour, was visiting an artisanal factory where a team of lovely people were making pasta from scratch.

Bologna Food Tour

If you’ve planned to visit the Emilian capital, a Food Tour of Bologna is certainly one of the experiences you must try during your trip!

By now the whole world is aware of it, our city boasts a culinary tradition of excellence : tortellini in steaming capon broth, handmade tagliatelle accompanied by a tasty ragù cooked for at least two hours, mortadella IGP … and we are just mentioning the great classics.

There are so many delicacies waiting for you that we cannot continue writing this article without making our mouth water , perhaps it’s better if we have a snack first. 😃

Yes, today we are definitely inspired (it often happens when we talk about food) and we apologize in advance for the language we will use: imaginative and at times witty. However, we will not feel guilty if, in reading this page, I have to eat as much as I can and gain some weight.

The arduous dilemma: which food tour to choose?

Food tours are not all the same , on the contrary, there are very different ones and each one has its advantages.

From the choice of dishes to the place in which to enjoy them, there are many differences and small details that can make the choice fall on one solution rather than another. All this without thinking about simple personal taste .

What we are sure of is that we have collected for you a mix of unique experiences that only a fantastic city like our “Grassa” (The Fat) can give you.

1. Traditional guided food tour in the center of Bologna

Piazza Maggiore bologna italy main square

A great classic: you eat, drink and walk with a local guide and some fellow adventurers, all set in the heart of the historic center .

Entering the mysterious and ancient alleys and then sitting at the table is the ideal way to spend a few pleasant hours in the warmth of conviviality and good food .

The absolute protagonist of the activity is the traditional Bolognese cuisine that will be offered to you through 5 tastings. In addition to satisfying your appetite, you can satisfy your thirst (for knowledge) thanks to the expert guide who can tell you some unusual anecdotes and curiosities about the recipes and dishes you will taste.

The reservation requires a minimum of two people and two time slots are available.

2. Voucher for tasting

This type of solution is perfect for those who love being independent .

No stress, no autopilot, you will have the reins and decide which route to take or where to stop.

The biggest advantage is certainly the excellent quality/price ratio of this type of proposal. In addition to the tasting vouchers, you will be provided with an exceptional weapon : the map with suggestions and points of interest.

This specific option includes a series of vouchers that you can use for :

  • Savor the fabulous tortellini, a tasty crescentina with mortadella and a tasting of traditional cold cuts.
  • Cool off with a nice ice cream and try some homemade chocolate

For adults , a tasting of Parmesan cheese, a glass of wine and a coffee are also included.

As mentioned at the beginning, we recommend this mode to those people who like to move freely or perhaps have special needs and prefer not to have to follow a guide or a group of people.

3. Excursion between Balsamic Vinegar, Parmesan and Wine

Bologna food tour - parmesan and balsamic vinegar excursion

“Excursion” or rather “immersion”, as we like to call this opportunity to spend a fantastic experiential and sensorial day .

This is not a simple walk, you will leave the city center to enter the countryside of Bologna in search of the truest flavors of our land . What to answer the call of the ancient aromas if not: “When do we leave?”

Before we go on we have to tell you: this is probably the most expensive food tour among those we have selected and yet every penny will be well spent !

We will not be here to give you the full account of what is included in this eating day but, just to give you an idea of what awaits you, know that:

  • You will be picked up and taken back to your accommodation (pss… if you have not yet booked you should definitely read our advice on where to sleep in Bologna) . All with great comfort and in full compliance with the anti-Covid regulations in force.
  • You will visit places of production of the Emilian culinary excellence , namely Parmigiano Reggiano , Balsamic Vinegar and Lambrusco .
  • Maybe it’s obvious, but food is made to be eaten, that’s why you will taste the delicacies just mentioned and much more …
  • In fact, after having awakened your appetite, lunch awaits you . Do not worry, it will be “light” so your excursion should not be counted among the twelve labors of Hercules!

We wanted to save a few words but we couldn’t move on to the next point on our list without giving you some more details on the stages that await you.

Here you will find just some information, we don’t want to spoil too much:

  • The first stop is the dairy where you will find out how our delicious aged cheese is made, you can visit the production site in the company of an expert guide.
  • Then you will leave for the vinegar factory to taste what many call the gold of Modena .
  • From the vinegar barrels you will move on to those of wine . In the cellar Lambrusco and Pignoletto will be the protagonists and will fill your glass with full and lively notes.

4. Fico Eataly World: ticket and tasting

The Fabbrica Italiana Contadina better known as FICO is a unique project of its kind: a food and wine theme park where you can find every aspect of Italian culinary culture.

The visit to FICO is for everyone but if we had to recommend it to someone in particular I would say that it is perfect for:

  • all those who want to admire the complex and multifaceted panorama of this world. From production to tasting, up to the kitchen accessory.
  • Families with children . In fact, the whole park is designed to accommodate and respond to the needs of children. Plus, Luna Farm is a real farm-themed amusement park designed to captivate and engage children of all ages.
  • Those traveling by car or planning to rent a car . In fact, it will be necessary to reach the place independently. Alternatively, it may be convenient to reach FICO by taxi .

The online purchase of this “ticket and tasting” combo includes admission, access to the amusement park, a guided tour and 4 tastings as well as the cost of parking for the whole day .

The 10 best things to do in Bologna

F ood, food and more food – Bologna's role as Italy's gastronomic capital is very much in evidence with markets, delis and eateries every which way you turn. Raise your eyes from the goodies, however, and you're rewarded with one of Italy's best preserved medieval centres with a wealth of majestic palazzi and towers, including the distinctive pair that is the city's most iconic symbol. Another feature that characterises Bologna  are its porticoes, a collective Unesco World Heritage site measuring nearly 62km altogether (including the world's longest) and ensuring protection from the rain and snow as well as from the hot summer sun.

For further Bologna inspiration, see our guides to the city's best  hotels ,  restaurants  and  bars .

Find things to do by area

City centre, borgo panigale, climb a medieval tower for a bird's eye view of the city.

A couple of dozen of the 100 or so towers that defined Bologna's medieval skyline, built both for defence and prestige, are still standing. The privately owned 60 metre-high Prendiparte tower is open to visitors each Sunday afternoon while the 97 metre-high Asinelli, the city's tallest, is currently closed due to long-term stabilisation work on its neighbour, steeply-leaning Garisenda. The iconic pair, the Due Torri, are a distinctive city symbol.

Insider's tip: For more tower-top panoramas go up the San Pietro cathedral bell tower, the clock tower of Palazzo d'Accursio in Piazza Maggiore and Torre Prendiparte (open the second and fourth Sunday of each month).

Tuck into tasty market treats

Bologna's colourful food markets are more than just for buying supplies, they're ripe with atmosphere and flavour. Just off Piazza Maggiore the knot of alleys of the Quadrilatero has sold foods since medieval times; nowadays the delis, butchers and fishmongers serve their specialities too. The more spacious Mercato delle Erbe, where produce stalls take centre stage and eateries occupy the wings, is the locals' choice.

Insider's tip: If you're around on a Saturday morning (Monday evening in summer) don't miss Mercato Ritrovato, a farmers' market with more, including cookery and craft classes, children's activities and streetfood that's anything but run-of-the-mill.

Absorb the history of Bologna with a multi-sensorial experience

Housed in the imposing Palazzo Pepoli, medieval home to the Pepoli family, former local rulers, the innovative Museum of the History of Bologna provides an engaging and immersive experience into local culture and history from Etruscan times to the present day and beyond. There's no room for boredom with interactive, multimedia and virtual reality displays; the city of water room is spectacular.

Insider's tip : The interior of the palazzo itself is attractive with original decorations and frescoes. One area is dedicated to mortadella, Bologna's famous aromatic sausage, that's been made here since ancient times, with production first regulated in 1661.

Discover world-class art and history

Often overlooked despite its exceptional art and history, the Basilica of San Domenico was built by the Dominicans over the smaller church where their founder died. Artworks include the 'Mystical Marriage of St Catherine' painted by Filippino Lippi and the tomb of St Dominic richly sculpted by Nicola Pisano with three sculptures by Michelangelo added later. The young Mozart played the organ still present in the Rosary Chapel.

Insider's tip: The church's magnificent inlaid wooden choir by Renaissance friar Damiano da Bergamo depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments was described by contemporaries as the eighth wonder of the world.

Learn pasta perfection

What better souvenir than a new skill? Bologna's deeply engrained passion for fresh pasta is thriving, with more professional pasta makers than ever before – many locals continue to make their own at least for special occasions. An abundance of courses are available in private homes, cookery schools and professional kitchens; Atipico Bottega offers hands-on pasta-making lessons, demonstrations and tastings. They also sell their pasta and traditional cakes.

Insider's tip: The official versions of more than 30 traditional recipes, including tortellini and green lasagne, are registered at Bologna's Chamber of Commerce; there's even a strip of gold showing the ideal dimensions of tagliatelle (8mm wide after cooking).

From piazza to piazza

Piazza Maggiore is the hub of city life as in Roman times when the forum was here. The huge San Petronio basilica dominates, while Palazzo d'Accursio houses the city hall and municipal art collection. Opposite the church, the arches of Palazzo del Podestà host whispering corners and link to Piazza Nettuno with its grand 16th-century Neptune fountain and Salaborsa library, which has an underground archaeological site.

Insider's tip: While Neptune's trident provided inspiration for the Maserati sports car logo, the dialect name for the giant statue, Zigant, has been adopted by local winery Lodi Corazza for their Pignoletto Superiore DOCG.

Explore the Seven Churches

Legend has it that San Petronio, the city patron, built the hexagonal Basilica del Sepolcro, one of the succession of adjoining churches that makes up the Santo Stefano, or Sette Chiese, complex, when he was Bologna's bishop in the fifth century. Other features include a two-tier Romanesque cloister, supposedly a favourite spot of Dante's when in Bologna, and the curious tomb of a tailor, bearing real scissors, in the courtyard.

Insider's tip:  From the cobbled, triangular Piazza Santo Stefano, where a popular antiques market is held the second weekend of each month, walk through the elegant Corte Isolani arcade to Strada Maggiore, coming out under a high portico which, according to legend, has three arrows in its ceiling.

Take the pilgrim's trail

A city symbol and beacon to homecoming Bolognese, the round baroque basilica of San Luca stands proud on a hill south-west of the city. If you have the time and energy walk (or run!) the steep, three-mile route from the centre which includes the world's longest portico, with 666 arches; alternatively take the land train from Piazza Maggiore.

Insider's tip : Just beyond the church the Vito bar and pizzeria is the perfect place to relax and refuel at the top before making your way back down the hill.

How to Tell If Your Wine Has Gone Bad

Does that glass of wine smell off? It's probably not just you — here's how to tell.

Vicki Denig is a freelance wine and travel journalist who divides her time between New York and Paris. She is a certified wine specialist who has worked in the wine trade since 2013.

Faults and flaws exist in all aspects of life, and the world of wine is no exception. From cork taint to oxidation and beyond, a number of flaws can arise during the winemaking process, and some of these faults can make it into your bottle.

However, some of these imperfections aren’t as terrible as they may seem. We asked three industry experts to break down the most common flaws in wine, as well as how to spot them, experience them, and perhaps even enjoy them.

Cork taint, Brettanomyces, and volatile acidity

According to Dr. Jamie Goode, wine journalist and author of the book Flawless: Understanding Faults in Wine , the most obvious wine fault is cork taint.

“[Cork taint] occurs when fungal metabolites [often referred to as TCA, an abbreviation for 2,4,6-trichloroanisole] from the cork end up in the wine,” he says. This results in aromas that typically come across as musty, damp cardboard.

However easy it is to blame cork taint for off aromas and flavors in wine, not every issue is the result of TCA contamination. Goode highlights the equally common fault of Brettanomyces, which is often simply referred to as Brett.

5 Common wine faults

  • Cork taint: Aromas of musty cardboard, wet dog
  • Brettanomyces: Barnyard or band-aid notes
  • Volatile acidity (VA): Sharp, prickly, and acidic profile
  • Oxidized: Muted fruit characteristics, overabundance of earthy notes
  • Reductive: Sulfurous compounds that come across as matchsticks or eggs

“[Brett] is caused by a rogue yeast of the same name that finishes off the fermentation or grows after fermentation has finished, and creates savory, slightly medicinal flavors in the wine that can range from band aid to animal sheds and farmyard smells,” says Goode.

Edouard Bourgeois, wine director at Pressoir, a New York-based wine experience company focused on tastings and events, adds that it only takes a small concentration of Brett to contaminate a whole vat of wine — or even a entire winery — which is why winemakers generally need to act quickly if they detect its pesky presence.

Not every flaw is the result of yeast or bacterial contamination, though. More nuanced chemical reactions are sometimes the culprit.

“Another possible flaw in wine is volatile acidity, otherwise known as VA,” says Bourgeois. He describes the condition as a concentration of acetic acid in wine, noting that excessive amounts of volatile acidity can cause a wine to dance a fine line between tasting like wine and vinegar.

Wines afflicted by volatile acidity may taste sharper, slightly sour, or feel prickly, or lightly carbonated on the tongue. However, some winemakers, particularly those in the natural wine space, have chosen to embrace a touch of VA in their wines, as small amounts can sometimes add interesting twists to the aromatic spectrum of a bottle.

Oxidation vs. reduction

Two of the most highly debated faults in wine are oxidation and reduction. Goode explains that in chemical reactions, oxidation and reduction are opposites, but in wine, they aren’t.

“Oxidation is when oxygen adversely affects the flavor of wine,” he says. “Fruity characters are lost, the color fades, and the wine tastes savory, often with notes of apple and hay and even earth.”

Reduction refers to the presence of odorous volatile sulfur compounds in wine. “These range from the simplest, hydrogen sulfide, which smells of eggs and drains, to more complex ones, which have a range of different smells,” says Goode. He notes that some volatile sulfur compounds can actually be positive in small doses.

Some winemakers may choose to refrain from oxygen exposure and keep wines in a reductive environment to protect them from oxidation.

“While oxygen can be useful to open up and develop aromas in wine — it’s the reason why you swirl the wine in your glass or decant it to let it breathe — it can also become wine’s enemy [in larger doses],” says Bourgeois. Overexposure to oxygen can disfigure the aromatic profile of a wine, as well as affect its ability to age properly, reducing its lifespan.

Are wines with faults still enjoyable?

Christina Rasumussen, the co-founder of Little Wine, a U.K.-based platform focused on managing information and data, explains that some wine faults are more distinguishable than others, and all faults can appear on various sides of the spectrum, from barely noticeable to severe.

“People have different abilities to pick up certain tastes and smells, and this isn't just limited to wine faults; it's also the case for certain flavors such as pepper, which the compound rotundone is responsible for,” she says As a result, one person may not sense what another person is picking up.

This begs the question, is a perceived fault actually really a fault, and whose palate should we use as a measure?

While some people may find the matchstick notes found in reductive wines to be unpleasant, many wine lovers enjoy the added layer of complexity it can bring to a wine. This argument can be made for most faults, save for cork taint, which all experts agree is largely intolerable.

Goode says that small traces of flaws can be quite interesting in wines. “For example, the vinegary smell of volatile acidity isn't nice when it is obvious, but at low levels, it adds complexity,” he explains.

Bourgeois agrees, elaborating that there are many different levels of tolerance for faults. “A bottle can be obviously oxidized and then there is no question,” he says. “On the other hand, a wine can be slightly affected by volatile acidity which, in small proportion, may in fact provide an interesting aromatic element in the wine.”

Rasmussen says that she and many other drinkers enjoy volatile acidity in wine at lower doses, particularly in warmer vintages, as it can add an element of freshness to a wine.

“In high doses, however, it can be highly unpleasant, giving the wine notes of vinegar or nail polish remover,” she says.

While there is no health risk to drinking a corked or oxidized wine, the excessive presence of faults can cause the balance of the wine to be off, rendering the experience of drinking it rather unenjoyable.

“People differ in their sensitivity to different smells, so they don't all experience wine faults the same,” says Goode. “This adds another level of complexity.”

My new favorite happy place! M great wine. Food.and service. Beautiful patio, friendly staff. Beautiful spot for a romantic dinner or special occasion. Or just a peaceful place to enjoy the lake sunsets. Bravo Mike, Cindy, and Vincent ! Can't wait to book a weekend.

Photo of Jordan N.

Amazing. Idk how they did it. Finally an Ohio-grown red that actually tasted like a real dry red wine! Okay let me back up! This is a beautiful lakeside mansion, so of course it's already impressive in its own. The parking lot is a little far from the restaurant though, so keep in mind for those who have troubles walking. Inside, there are different rooms for seating. We got the best seat in the house: right by the window overlooking the lake. Amazing!!!! It looks like there's a huge beautiful patio when the weather is nice ! There's also a bar around the back too, separate from the restaurant // winery ! Our mushroom flatbread was delicious !!!!! Our gnocchi and burger were good, but nothing special. Overall, you HAVE to come visit and add this to your summer bucket list !!!!! The views, the space, and an Ohio red that is actually good !!

We came for a quick drink and bite to eat, just wanted to scope it out. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed to gorgeous view and great live music! We ordered the crab cakes (I love a good crab cake) and a glass of the Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. To be frank, I work in the wine industry so I am a little more "snobby" than most. The crab cakes were great! I can only imagine the menu inside (photos attached) is just as good! Wine wise, the Cabernet Franc was lighter than I prefer but overall had a good full body and berry forward palate. The Chardonnay was a bit more fruity than I prefer but on a hot day it was refreshing. Definitely a more buttery Chardonnay so if that is your preference you will enjoy this.

**Original Flesch-Kincaid Score: 62.7** --- When I heard about this new spot, it came highly recommended. I was looking for a great local place and had high hopes, but I think they still have room to improve. I took my girlfriend for Sunday brunch and we sat in the "Lake House" section, their bar area. She ordered a mushroom flatbread and a grapefruit mimosa, while I chose the croque monsieur with iced tea. The interior was bright and welcoming, and despite being busy, they seemed to have enough staff. We were quickly greeted and given menus, and our waitress returned shortly to take our order. Our drinks arrived quickly. However, the experience went downhill from there. The room was so noisy we had to raise our voices to talk. And we had plenty of time to do that as the food took about 10 minutes longer than the drinks to arrive. My girlfriend liked her drink and flatbread, which were fresh and well-prepared. My dish, however, was disappointing; the potatoes weren't as described on the menu and the sandwich used plain store-bought bread. A waiter checked in on us, and I pointed out the potato issue. The menu listed smashed potatoes but you can see what I got in the photo. He seemed puzzled, claimed those were their standard breakfast potatoes and asked if I was sure I saw them on the menu, and didn't follow up further. After finishing our meals, we waited another 10 minutes without seeing any staff before finally asking for the bill and leaving. We really wanted to enjoy this place--it's beautifully located by the lake--but it seems they prioritize appearance over substance. If the owners can improve staff training, ingredient quality, and reduce the noise, they could truly make the most of this wonderful location.

We enjoyed an awesome dinner here with extended family last week. Our Uncle Frank had been here once before and it didn't disappoint. Our server Suzanne was super. It was Good Friday so most of us had the beet salad with salmon which got rave reviews. After dinner we walked the grounds and watched the sunset. Then we retired to the bar for after dinner drinks. What a gem on Lake Erie in Madison, Ohio!

First of all, the views are amazing and the building is gorgeous. However, the noise level was so loud it dragged down the whole experience. Took a long time to get noticed once we were seated, then took longer to get our food and drinks. Probably will not go back until weather is nice enough to sit outside so the interior noise doesn't ruin the experience.

Absolutely gorgeous building. Lovely layout. Our dinners and wine were very good. Service was good, especially for a "soft" open! This is a place that folks should check out for sure!!

I wanted to love it and I will try again in a few months once they get their act together. Me and 3 friends went on 4/27/24 and it was rough. It was so bad we thought we were there soon after opening. We even asked because of it, but they had opened in February. They don't take reservations for parties of 4 so we arrived and put our names on the list. The host took our number and said they would call when our table was ready. We headed to the bar and stood at an almost empty bar with an almost empty bar room for about 20 minutes and neither of the 2 bartenders ever came over to us. We got a call for our table and left the area without ever getting service. No biggie, we can get a drink from our own waitress.. But we were sat and we sat and we sat and for over another 20 minutes staff walked by us without anyone coming over. No water, no drink orders taken, etc. Finally a young man came by and apologized and said the waitress called for us to come but was not ready and was very busy. We waited another 15 minutes before she greeted us, still no water or drinks. Each table has its own refillable water jar and ours was never filled. When Alison came over she greeted us and we tried to order everything at once, by now we were ready after staring at the menu without drinks or service for over 30 minutes. We wanted the Brie but they were out. We ordered one of the flat breads and it was very good. Three of us ordered a drink from their speciality cocktail menu, the dirty martini. We were charged extra for the blue cheese stuffed olives. That is odd for specialty cocktail. Do not put it on your menu if you are going to charge extra for a main part of why the drink is special. The drinks were just ok for $15 each. When we got to place our dinner order, we kept it simple and all four of us ordered as is from the menu, no special requests. The food took a long time and our drinks were empty and our water was never refilled after we had to ask the first time for it to be filled. They were busy, so we got it, but the waitress never came by to say anything or to check on our drinks. Two of us ordered two different pasta dishes, one ordered with chicken. The waitress rang in two of the same pasta dishes (you can see on the receipt), one with chicken. My friend that got the wrong meal is very kind and didn't want to say anything but she strongly dislikes an ingredient in the meal she was served so I said something for her and the new meal was brought out after the rest of us were done eating. I ordered the scallops which were great but they were served with mushroom risotto which was hard/under cooked. We finally had to ask another server to find our server for us because we never saw her. We had to find her to get a second cocktail. By the time they came we had been there for almost 3 hours. At this point we just wanted to get up and move so we asked for the check. We got one, paid and tipped a normal 20% even though the service was not good, she was nice. Two of us were servers most of our lives so it is hard for us to tip less even when the service is not great. We paid and took our drinks outside to finish. The place inside and out is gorgeous. Big credit to the people that refinished this place, its beautiful. It was getting close to 9, which was closing time. We noticed the staff cleaning up around people as they sat and finished their meals and drinks. For $328.53, I think it is appropriate to wait to start cleaning up. My friend mentioned she wished she could have another martini but we knew they were packing up so I went to the bar. Asked an older gentleman bartender if I could purchase more blue cheese stuffed olives and some olive juice to go and he said "hold on, I have to ask the other bartender." She heard him and looked at him and said "ask me what?" He asked her if I could do what I requested and she said "no." No, explanation, no "I'm sorry, but.." just "no." She was cleaning up and there were still patrons at the bar and a large party in that room. I wanted to love it but it was subpar for over $300.
