longest golf players on tour

With new drivers being released left, right and centre, you'll start to see the biggest names in the world with a new driver in their hand. Bryson DeChambeau leads the way in the driving distance statistics, but which other players make up the current top 10?

DeChambeau has been on a quest for more speed and distance for a while now and his success at the US Open and rise in the world rankings have led a few other big names to start thinking about their own distance.

Reports have been circulating that Rory McIlroy has upped his swing speed in an attempt to leave every other play behind him, but how far does the Northern Irishman currently drive the ball?

Take a look below at the current top 10 longest hitters on average on the PGA Tour, starting with the 10th and leading down to No.1, Mr DeChambeau.

Rory McIlroy was the PGA Tour’s longest driver in 2022-23 after leading the circuit in average driving distance. It was the first time McIlroy had led the Tour in that category since 2018, when he averaged 319.7 yards per drive. Cameron Champ and Bryson DeChambeau had each led the Tour for two seasons since.

No, this isn’t the top 10 in SI’s pro golf ranking, but rather here are the 10 longest players on the PGA Tour during the 2022-23 season – and the shortest, too:

10 Longest Drives In PGA Tour History

Since 2003 every shot on the PGA Tour has been laser measured. So who on Tour has boldly gone where no man has gone before?

Longest Drives In PGA Tour History: Davis:Love III drives at at Plantation Course at Kapalua in 2004

10 longest drives In PGA Tour history

The most extreme of the longest drives in PGA Tour history is the 787-yard tee shot by Carl Cooper on the third hole at the 1992 Texas Open. It finished beyond the green. The 12th green that is. His shot had hit a downhill sloping concrete cart path on the 456-yard par-4 and bounced along. Cooper took another three shots to get back to the green.

So some drives are counted as official by the PGA Tour and some are not. The peculiar circumstance of Cooper’s shot means that his mammoth hit is excluded from the long-drive records. So, too, Dustin Johnson ’s 489-yarder on the 12th hole at at Austin Country Club during the 2018 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. In this case it was for being in matchplay .

In 2000, the PGA Tour started using the laser-based ShotLink system at some of its tournaments to record and measure drives and since 2003, the PGA Tour has used ShotLink at all its tournaments to measure the golf shots.

On the 18th hole in the third round of the Mercedes Championship of 2002 at Plantation Course at Kapalua, Tiger Woods’ drive was recorded at 498 yards. The 15 longest drives of that season were all recorded on that hole during that round. All these drives were later excluded from the official records. If they were not, then Davis Love III's official longest drive would merely be the joint-ninth longest drive.

The official 10 longest drives in PGA Tour history:

  • 477 yards by Max Homa (2023) on the 7th hole at Kapalua (Plantation)
  • 476 yards by Davis Love III (2004) on 18th hole at Kapalua (Plantation)
  • 473 yards by Jeff Sluman (2003) on 14th hole at PGA West (Palmer)
  • 467 yards by Charley Hoffman (2009) on 1st hole at La Cantera (Resort)
  • 463 yards by Dustin Johnson (2011) on 7th hole at TPC Boston
  • 460 yards by Scott Stallings (2022) on 15th hole at TPC Scottsdale
  • 459 yards by Luke List (2023) on 7th hole at Kapalua (Plantation)
  • 457 yards by Justin Thomas (2019) on 10th hole at Club de Golf Chapultepec
  • 455 yards by Ryan Brehm (2023) on 18th hole at Kapalua (Plantation)
  • 455 yards by Bubba Watson (2019) on 2nd hole at Pebble Beach Links

The longest hole in professional golf measures 773 yards, but the furthest drive in PGA Tour history would've went over its green.

Who Hit the Longest Drive in PGA Tour History and How Far Did it Go?

How far can you hit a drive if you really give it everything you have? 200 yards? 300 yards? 350 maybe? Tiger Woods , Rory McIlroy, and the rest of today’s longest hitters consistently knock it past the 300 mark, but what’s the longest drive ever recorded on the PGA Tour and who struck it? The answer is probably longer than you think.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka are all incorrect

The best golfers in the world today can absolutely crush the ball. Rory McIlroy averages 320.2 yards per drive this season. Yes, you read that right. He’s not even the longest hitter on Tour either. Bryson Dechambeau leads the PGA Tour in driving distance with a 321.3-yard average.

A total of 86 golfers average more than 300 yards per drive for the 2020 season. For comparison, John Daly hit the longest recorded drive of the 1992 season , and it went 308 yards. That’s a pedestrian figure in this day and age.

The longest drive of the 2020 season was a 449-yard bomb by Justin Thomas. Tiger Woods’ longest poke this season is 335 yards. Huge, right? Actually that’s tied for the 306th longest on Tour in 2020. Brooks Koepka hit one 348, but that wasn’t even enough to crack the top 200.

The newest golf technology allows players to mash drives farther than any year in recorded history, but the Tour’s longest drive didn’t come from this bunch.

The honorable mention longest drives in PGA Tour history

Dustin Johnson is a frequent visitor to the world’s longest drives list. He owns two of the longest drives ever recorded. Johnson crushed one 463 yards in 2011 and another 489 yards in 2018 . He also almost aced a 433-yard hole two years ago. The ball was in the whole way but stopped inches short of the hole.

Tiger Woods might not be one of the longest hitters this season, but he does own one of the biggest drives of all time. In 2002, Woods unleashed a 498-yard bomb on the 18th hole at the Mercedes Championship at Kapalua’s Plantation Course. It holds up today as the longest recorded drive of the 21st century.

The first drive over 500 yards came from Mike Austin in 1974. Austin smashed one 515 yards deep at the National Seniors Open Championship at Winterwood Golf Course. The most impressive part? Austin was 64 when he unleashed the bomb. The Guinness Book of World Records still recognizes Austin’s drive as the longest official shot in golf history, but there’s one that traveled farther.

The unofficial farthest drive ever traveled almost 800 yards

The Korn Ferry Tour featured a hole last season that measured 773 yards . It’s a par-5 at the TPC Colorado Championship. The longest drive ever recorded on Tour would’ve rolled over the green on this behemoth.

That’s right. The farthest unofficial drive in history traveled 787 yards before finally coming to rest — 330 yards past the intended hole.

Carl Cooper, a 31-year-old at the time, smoked the historic drive at the Texas Open in 1992. Cooper uncorked the drive on the 456-yard third hole. The ball landed on a downhill cart path and took off. It continued its journey along the cart path past the third hole and all the way to the 12th green. Cooper’s caddy calculated the distance at 787 yards from the third tee.

Cooper might be thrilled with the record-setting drive today, but he definitely wasn’t at the time. He went on to record a double bogey on the hole.

Guys- like most people you tend to focus on what a pro is using- not me- I want to know who that 70 year old is doing to hit 350 yard drives, and 9 irons 200 yards! Me I am 70 years old in July 2017, I use a Taylor Made 2013 head with my replacement shaft which is an EXTRA stiff graffalloy x65 gram extra stiff shaft. I hit it 245 yards with a 5 -10 yard draw, nine iron 135 stiff shaft yards made by yards Gigagolf , TRX PowerMax Slot Irons. with a solid 8 handicap. Who give a rats behind on all the million dollar precision clubs which , except touring pros can obtain. Where the news on my style of Golf that real golfers need. not bragging, but I ain’t half bad. Plus I use A U S MADE TAPE MEASURE ( real feet) ((not a Chinese foot) TO CHECK MY YARDAGE, NOT TV HYPE!

Bad attention to detail by Golfwrx. Not a big deal, but I wanted to see where both Day and Johnson placed the movable weights on the M1. Then I noticed the photo shown is the same photo, most probably a TM stock photo and not the actual M1 head of either golfer. And I here I thought Golfwrx was into full and complete details and real, true photos of the actual clubs. The Cleveland photo shown is most likely a stock photo as well, although not as objectionable because of its nature.

Eight different drivers among the 10 longest hitters. Further proof that it’s the “Indian, not the arrow”. These 10 guys could play any one of those 8 drivers and still land in the top ten longest.

It is the Indian with a team of fitters for each one….as for we armatures it is up to how you feel about the company who’s name in on the product. IE, if your a Callaway guy or a Ping fan you will find the Cleveland and Taylormade a piece of junk, as if your a Cleveland guy you find Ping and Callaway nothing but a waste…….that is the fun of golf play what you like because that is what your going to play best with (unless your under 18 years old with a lot of professional swing coaches leaning you to one club or the other, the Country Club kid with access to every club on the planet).

it should be noted how the PGA tour calculates “Average Driving Distance”, Two par fours or fives are selected for each round. The holes chosen are ones that play down wind and down grade. The tour takes the average distance of those two drives, Not saying that the above players don’t bomb it, but the numbers are slightly distorted to help sell equipment and advertising.

That’s interesting. But it’s still very hard to average 300 yards. Occasionally bomb a 300 yarder possible, but average!

Nearly right. The figures are collected for various reasons. One of them is to better inform golfers about performance. If the manufacturers failed to capitalise on the better results, it would be unusual. In my view, there is nothing wrong in trying to sell golf equipment. Golf instructors, for instance, use data collected to help inform their clients. Club fitters use the data to assist golfers get fitted with the best clubs for them. Measurement is two holes but they need to be wider faiways on a good driving hole where the players are most likely to use the driver. Data becomes complex if it’s a narrow par 4 and half the field hit 3 wood, hybrid and longer iron for position.

Dec 24, 2015 at 9:36 pm

Well unless they’ve changed the way they choose the two measuring holes you’re wrong. As I’ve always understood it they try to choose two hole in opposite direction so one is down wind and one into the wind and generally they try to choose flater holes where the majority of the field will hit driver.

That is somewhat of an eclectic mix, especially with Cleveland having to representatives in the mix and Callaway with just one. The one item I would like to know is the playing length of these drivers. How many are 45″ and under? Or 45″ and over?

Not that I count for much but I gamed a few Cleveland Drivers recently including the 588 and the Black. They are great drivers, especially for the money and especially for lower swing speed golfers. The only problem I see is that a some of their recent offerings are not adjustable and although they come with very good stock shafts-Matrix Black Tie and Mitsubishi Bassara E Series they do not offer the wide variety of stock shaft options that are offered by the big sellers. They are also not a big presence in big box stores. But I see a few in guys’ bags and any Senior or low SS player should seek them out.

I always pay respect to other golfers on the course and praise their good drive with whatever big stick they have at the time.

I also do that in the parking lot when people bring classics to the courses. Nice driver, I always say, And you will hear a lot of interesting stories and make a lot of friends.

Dec 22, 2015 at 9:47 pm

Are these more what we shouldn’t be using then? Yeah I know we need to get fitted etc to be sure, but I’m pretty sure most of us’ swings are nothing like the pro’s. I went to an indoor range last night (don’t know how accurate but it’s close) I can max out 260 in no wind, flat conditions, but my average is only 220. Yeah those mis hits and hooks count too. These guys all average over 300. I used to tell people that I hit 250 when people ask (but of course they didn’t say average LOL). But max and average really is not the same thing. Changing up my swing so hopefully will get some consistency and distance gains.

If this helps you as much as it’s helped me you can check out an iPhone app (also works on newer iPads) from the app store: Perfect Form Golf. For the price of a bucket of balls it helped me to acquire tempo (since mine was crap), this allowed me the timing to finish my shoulder turn, get my hands extended but with relaxed wrists, then get my elbows in front on the down swing with the net result I got huge distance gains. But since the effort level had dropped I could also keep accuracy. Your mileage may vary but I went from 200-220 to 285-300 (yeah, I know, my golf buds didn’t believe me either until they saw it for themselves). I then used the app to compare my irons, chipping/pitching, and even putting to a 3D motion capture avatar of a pro swing against mine in slo-mo, and got improvements there as well. For whatever reason actually seeing the differences overlaid, versus being told about them seem to be the key to getting really fast improvement. My swing is a work in progress and winter up here slows things down, but I was pretty much blown away at how far from a decent swing mine actually was, and how quickly I could start bringing the pieces together for decent tempo and kinetic sequence. Like I say, your mileage may vary but I guarantee there will be some significant component that you will be able to modify to get closer to your goal.

Did Rory McIlroy inspire Shane Lowry’s putter switch?

longest golf players on tour

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report.  Head over there for the full article.

The timing of Lowry’s putter changeup was curious: Was he just using a Spider putter because he was paired with McIlroy, who’s been using a Spider Tour X head throughout 2024? Was Lowry just being festive because it’s the Zurich Classic, and he wanted to match his teammate? Did McIlroy let Lowry try his putter, and he liked it so much he actually switched into it?

Well, as it turns out, McIlroy’s only influence was inspiring Lowry to make more putts.

When asked if McIlroy had an influence on the putter switch, Lowry had this to say: “No, it’s actually a different putter than what he uses. Maybe there was more pressure there because I needed to hole some more putts if we wanted to win,” he said with a laugh.

To Lowry’s point, McIlroy plays the Tour X model, whereas Lowry switched into the Tour Z model, which has a sleeker shape in comparison, and the two sole weights of the club are more towards the face.

Lowry’s Spider Tour Z has a white True Path Alignment channel on the crown of his putter, which is reminiscent of Lowry’s former 2-ball designs, thus helping to provide a comfort factor despite the departure from his norm. Instead of a double-bend hosel, which Lowry used in his 2-ball putters, his new Spider Tour Z is designed with a short slant neck.

“I’ve been struggling on the greens, and I just needed something with a fresh look,” Lowry told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. “It has a different neck on it, as well, so it moves a bit differently, but it’s similar. It has a white line on the back of it [like my 2-ball], and it’s a mallet style. So it’s not too drastic of a change.

“I just picked it up on the putting green and I liked the look of it, so I was like, ‘Let’s give it a go.’”

10 Longest Drives in PGA Tour History

Fact Checked By Ben Jenks

Max Homas has the longest drive in pga history in 2024

The longest drive in PGA Tour history is 787 yards, by Carl Cooper in the 1992 Texas Open. However, we may need to pump the brakes on that as the “official” longest drive in TOUR history.

The PGA TOUR has adopted some parameters to quantify the true, official long drive in its record books. I will explain this more if you read on…and trust me, you will want to!

Officially, according to TOUR records, the longest drive in PGA TOUR history goes to Max Homa, with his 477-yard bomb in 2023 on the 7th hole at Kapalua’s Plantation course .

So what makes Homma’s official and Cooper’s not?

Why isn’t Tiger Woods’s 498-yarder in 2002 on the 18th hole at Kapalua even on the official Top 10 list?

I’ll explain the answers to those questions and the official parameters for including a tee shot on the list of all-time bombs. Additionally, I will reveal the official list as it stands today and some of the biggest drives in 2023.

Check this out: What is The LPGA Average Driving Distance?

Longest drives in pga tour history, longest drives on the pga tour in 2023, dechambeau drives for 377 yards in 2021, mike austin drives for 515 yards in 1974, kyle berkshire drives for 579 yards in 2023, what is tiger woods’ longest drive ever, what is john daly’s longest drive ever, who is the straightest driver in pga tour history.

Here are the official longest drives in PGA TOUR history as of early 2024.

The list of longest drives on the PGA TOUR was revamped in 2003 after ShotLink  became the TOUR’s official date and record-keeping system. Because of this, drives like Tiger’s 498-yarder in 2002 on the 18th hole at Kapalua during the Mercedes Championship have been kicked off the list.

Other drives have been discounted and not marked as official for other reasons.

For example, Dustin Johnson’s 489-yard drive  on the 12th hole at Austin Country Club at the 2018 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship did not count because the event was a match play format.

And drives like Carl Cooper’s, way back in 1992 at the Texas Open, are no longer “official” due to the circumstances that led to his mind-boggling 787-yard poke. You see, a ball that hits off of a concrete cart path continues to stay on said path and rolls forever downhill on it can surely give you a yard or two extra…or a few hundred yards, for that matter!

Are you curious about the longest official drives on the PGA TOUR in 2023? Have a look below for the answers. Then stay tuned for the longest drives in the PGA Tour in 2024.

Traditionally, the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort, which hosts the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January each year, serves up some of the longest drives we see all season.

Read on: The Longest Driver Shafts: Does Length Add Distance?

More notable long drives in pga history.

bryson dechambeau is one of the longest drivers in PGA history

Countless other famed drives throughout golf history are not on the official list of longest drives and should not be discounted.

I was on hand to witness one recent storied drive. At the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational, I witnessed Bryson DeChambeau hit the longest drive ever on the signature par 5 sixth hole. His 377-yard bomb was almost all carry as he took a crazy aggressive line of the dogleg left par 5 with a massive pond down the left side.

Then there is Mike Austin’s legendary drive. Guinness recognized Mike Austin for having the longest drive in competition. His world record was set with a 515-yard drive in 1974 at the Las Vegas U.S. National Seniors Open Championship. Mike was 64 years old at the time!

However, as we all know, records are meant to be broken…

You can not talk about long drives without mentioning the king of the long ball, Kyle Berkshire.

Kyle consistently hits drives with ball speeds over 230 mph. His longest drives in World Long Drive Championship competitions are usually in the neighborhood of 500 yards.

Recently, Berkshire hit a drive that claimed the spot of the longest drive, according to Guinness. His 579-yard drive  holds the new mark for the longest of all time. That’s right, I said 579 yards!

More from GolfSpan: 10 Best Golf Drivers For Distance

Tiger Woods’ longest drive ever recorded in competition was 498 yards. This drive occurred during the 2002 Mercedes Championships at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Hawaii, on the 18th hole known for its long downhill and downwind layout.

John Daly claimed in an interview his longest drive was 806 yards . But this wasn’t on a golf course; it was at the LA International Airport, and he got a lot of help from concrete. He also drove 414 yards at the 1994 B.C. Open .

Calvin Peete is the straightest driver in PGA Tour history. Over his career, Peete was renowned for his accuracy off the tee, leading the PGA Tour in driving accuracy for ten consecutive years from 1981 to 1990. His precision helped him secure 12 PGA Tour wins.

Who are the longest drivers on the PGA tour? List of power hitters

The pga tour features big personalities, elegant finesse, and mammoth drives. let’s take a closer look at the longest hitters on the tour..

Jeffrey May

The PGA Tour began keeping records of long drives back in 1980, and that has been one of the marquee criteria by which we judge golfing champions.

For the past two decades, the high-water mark was a tour average of 321.4 yards, set in 2003 by Hank Kuehne. Then, as the world settled into pandemic mode, Bryson DeChambeau broke it with a 322.1 yard average, before trumping that mark the following year with an average of 323.7 yards.

Rory McIlroy

While monster drives are no guarantee of success, as we can see in the top 3 of the 2024 rankings: Cameron Champ, Chris Gotterup and Kevin Dougherty, it does help to hit it long as long as you can keep it in play as Rory McIlroy usually does, who comes in at fourth place on the list .

2024 Golf Ball Guide: 48 golf balls reviewed and recommended for your game

Learn all about the 48 best new golf balls on the market below.

Jeffrey Westbrook; Styling: Miako Kato

There’s a good chance you’ve heard it before, but it still bears repeating: The golf ball is the only piece of equipment in your bag — save for your grips — that sees action on every shot you take. Think about that for a second.

In a world where golfers are spending more time (and money) than ever before on clubfittings to optimize their setup, the golf ball remains the forgotten piece of the gear puzzle — an all-important aspect that some leave up to chance.

If you’re a high-spin golfer blindly playing a ball designed to induce more rpm , you’re likely sacrificing distance and consistency on the course. It’s akin to grabbing a suit off the rack and expecting it to fit like a well-tailored Cesare Attolini.

It’s time to change how you look at the golf ball. With a myriad of models, colors and visual tech options available, we can guarantee there’s a ball for your game. Continued improvements in technology and materials have made it easier than ever to decouple launch and spin and find a winning offering that truly does it all from tee to green.

With the help of our 2024 Golf Ball Guide, our goal is to make you smarter and better informed about the options in the marketplace as well as the materials used to bring these high-tech offerings to life. As you’ll quickly notice, a lot goes into crafting the materials and models offered by leading equipment manufacturers. We also give leading gear experts in the industry the opportunity to answer some of your most pressing golf ball questions. Consider this your guide to the ultimate golf ball.

But first, here are 48 of the best new golf balls available for purchase and the essential info you need to know about each model, including how they’re categorized:

Premium: These golf balls use top-of-the-line materials to offer distance and maximum short game control. Premium value: The golf balls offer high-end materials and technology but at a lower price point. Distance value: These are golf balls designed to deliver maximum distance and reduced shot dispersion off the tee. Soft spin value: Golf balls are designed to offer a soft feel and more short game zip than distance focused golf balls.

Brooks Koepka, PGA Championship

This year’s PGA Championship features plenty of compelling storylines, stemming from Tiger Woods’ return to Valhalla to whether or not Michael Block can replicate his success from Oak Hill a year ago.

World number one Scottie Scheffler enters as the odds-on favorite as he eyes his second straight major victory. This year’s PGA Championship comes only days after he and his wife Meredith gave birth to their first child.

Brooks Koepka , meanwhile, hopes to win his second straight Wanamaker Trophy. Should he do so, he would become the first player to repeat at a major championship since he won the 2018 and 2019 PGA Championships at Bellerive and Bethpage Black.

Then Rory McIlroy , fresh off his dominant victory at the Wells Fargo Championship, is looking for his third straight win and continue his success at Valhalla, where his last major triumph came in 2024.

Here are the current PGA Championship odds.

PGA Championship Odds:

Here are the current odds for players to win, provided by DraftKings:

  • Scottie Scheffler +400
  • Rory McIlroy +750
  • Brooks Koepka +1200
  • Xander Schauffele +1600
  • Jon Rahm +1600
  • Ludvig Åberg +1600
  • Collin Morikawa +2200
  • Bryson DeChambeau +2200
  • Max Homa +3000
  • Viktor Hovland +3500
  • Patrick Cantlay +3500
  • Joaquin Niemann +3500
  • Cameron Smith +3500
  • Wyndham Clark +4000
  • Tommy Fleetwood +4000
  • Justin Thomas +4000
  • Cameron Young +4000
  • Hideki Matsuyama +4500

Brooks Koepka, PGA Championship

PGA Championship Predictions

Out of all four major championships, the PGA Championship employs the strongest field every year. Every one of the top players on the PGA Tour will compete this week, as will 15 players from LIV Golf.

That makes it somewhat challenging to predict, but this golf course, stretched beyond 7,600 yards, requires both distance and accuracy off the tee.

Valhalla also replaced its bentgrass fairways with Zoysiagrass three years ago, making the course play faster and firmer, diminishing the actual width of the fairways. The club also removed the rough between the fairways and the fairway bunkers, creating a style not dissimilar to that of a British Links course—where drives that find the short grass could easily roll into the sand.

As such, we like players who have precision off the tee to succeed this week.

Another close call for Xander Schauffele

After racing out to a commanding lead at Quail Hollow, Xander Schauffele lost his mojo over the weekend, settling for a second-place finish behind McIlroy.

The former San Diego State Aztec has grown accustomed to second-place finishes. He has 14 runner-up finishes in his career, two of which have come in majors. Schauffele also has recorded 12 top-10 finishes in majors since his first major in 2017, when he tied for 5th at the U.S. Open .

Xander Schauffele, PGA Tour, Wells Fargo Championship

His game has no weaknesses, except for the ability to close the deal on a major stage.

Schauffele will be there in the end, except he will not have the Wanamaker Trophy in his grasp. Instead, he will record his 13th top-10 finish in a major, which DraftKings has at +150.

LIV Golf will have two players in the top 10

It would surprise nobody if Brooks Koepka went on to win his sixth major championship this week at Valhalla. He recently won at LIV Golf Singapore, where, before the tournament, he expressed his frustrations for his poor play at Augusta National .

Koepka will arrive in Louisville with a chip on his shoulder, a dangerous sentiment for the rest of the field. His game is rounding into shape, too, thanks to his ball-striking returning to top form over the past couple of weeks. As such, we like Koepka to finish in the top-5 at +330.

Joaquin Niemann, LIV Golf

But another LIV Golf star will finish in the top 10.

Joaquin Niemann, the 25-year-old from Santiago, Chile, will record his first top 10 in a major this week. He missed the cut at Oak Hill last year, but tied for 23rd at Southern Hills—his best finish at the PGA. But Niemann has proven himself as one of LIV Golf’s best players this season. That, coupled with his extraordinary ability to shape the ball off the tee, will have the Chilean in the top 10 at the end. DraftKings lists Niemann to finish in the top 10 at +300.

Justin Thomas contends on home turf

After a disastrous 2023 campaign, Justin Thomas has rebounded somewhat in 2024. Yes, he missed the cut at The Players and The Masters—his two biggest events to date—but Thomas has three top 10s so far this season, including a top 5 at the RBC Heritage.

After a solid first round at Quail Hollow, Thomas faded during the weekend, settling for a tie for 21st at the Wells Fargo Championship. But he ranks 11th on tour in strokes gained: tee to green.

With his re-discovered form and the hometown crowd cheering him on all week, Thomas will finish in the top 10 at +400 at Valhalla—his first top 10 finish in a major since he defeated Will Zalatoris in a playoff at Southern Hills in 2022.

Jordan Spieth falls short of Grand Slam in big way

Since tournament officials disqualified Jordan Spieth from the Genesis Invitational for signing an incorrect scorecard, his results have been poor at best.

He tied for 30th at Bay Hill, missed the cut at The Players and the Valspar, then bounced back with a top 10 at the Valero Texas Open. But the 15th hole did him in during the first round of The Masters, leading to another missed cut.

Jordan Spieth, PGA Tour, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Spieth also missed the cut at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and failed to come close to contention at the RBC Heritage and Wells Fargo Championship.

Poor iron play has been the primary culprit of his struggles, but Spieth has not found many fairways either. He ranks 66th in driving accuracy percentage this season, finding the short grass only 64.64% of the time. Thus, we are avoiding Spieth this week, even though a win would have him complete the Grand Slam.

Tiger Woods makes the cut

Perhaps the biggest question of the week revolves around Tiger Woods and whether the 15-time major champion can replicate his success at Valhalla in 2000.

That year, Woods triumphed over Bob May in a showdown for the ages for his third straight major title.

The course has changed since then, but Valhalla's routing has primarily remained the same. Woods knows this golf course better than most, which will prove invaluable as the week progresses. But Woods’ ability to hit a golf ball around a major championship venue has never been a mystery—whether or not he can traverse the course itself is.

Tiger Woods, PGA Tour, 2024 PGA Championship

Valhalla does not have the severe undulations that Augusta National has, and Woods made it through 72 holes at this year’s Masters. As such, we believe Woods will battle to make the cut once again this week, knowing that this Kentucky track does not feature the extreme slopes and hills that others do.

Big Golf Course, Big Names, Big Storylines

Dottie Pepper of CBS Sports called Valhalla a “big test” on a conference call with media last week.

Going off that motif, we believe this big golf course will separate the best from the rest and produce a dramatic leaderboard filled with big names, thus creating big storylines once again.

Scottie Scheffler will contend once again. Since he tied for fourth at the PGA Championship in 2020, Scheffler has recorded seven top-10 finishes to go along with his two Green Jackets. He is too good of a player from tee to green to not consider him, despite the life-changing moment he experienced this past weekend.

The odds reflect that, too. Scheffler is +105 to finish in the top 10 and +400 to win, a preposterously low number.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, The Masters

Since changing to his mallet putter at Bay Hill, Scheffler has rattled off four wins in five starts and has a better chance than any to win again this week.

But Rory McIlroy has an excellent shot this week, too. He has won his last two starts, even though Scheffler sat on the sidelines for both. Yet, McIlroy won at Valhalla in 2014. He hits the ball a country mile, driving it better than anyone, a recipe for success on this golf course. He ranks first on the PGA Tour in total driving, which considers both distance and accuracy.

McIlroy will show up on this big course once more, with the question not being if he will contend, but whether or not he can break through again. The best bet for McIlroy is a top-5 finish at +175 since a top-10 does not yield a significant return at -110.

PGA Championship Longshot Winner

If you have watched the PGA Tour over the past two weeks, one name has quietly lurked on the front page of the leaderboard.

Thirty-one-year-old Byeong Hun An, who has yet to win on the PGA Tour, tied for fourth at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and then finished in solo third at Quail Hollow.

Byeong Hun An, PGA Tour, Wells Fargo Championship

Similar to McIlroy, An has a ton of power off the tee. He ranks fourth on tour in average driving distance and 16th in total driving. The Seoul, South Korea native is also 25th on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy this season.

His short game is his weakness, an issue on any golf course. But An changed that narrative on Quail Hollow’s new greens last week. He ranked first among the field in strokes gained putting, despite ranking 91st on tour this season in that metric.

Perhaps he has discovered something with his flat stick, and if he continues to roll the rock well at Valhalla, An will contend. DraftKings currently has him at +5500 to win and +1100 to finish in the top 5. A top 10 result yields a +500 payout—any of those is worth a shot on a player who has recently caught some fire.

He also tied for 16th at Augusta National this year.

2024 PGA Championship one and done picks, field, sleepers, strategy: Golf predictions, PGA Tour betting advice

Mike mcclure locked in his expert one and done golf picks, projected leaderboard, and top sleepers for the pga championship 2024 at valhalla golf club in louisville.

collin-morikawa-usatsi-cbs.jpg

For the fourth time in the event's history, Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky will host the 2024 PGA Championship. Play gets underway on Thursday, May 16, and the 2024 PGA Championship field is headlined by Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka. Scheffler is the 3-1 betting favorite in the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds, followed by McIlroy (6-1), Koepka (10-1), Xander Schauffele (12-1), Ludvig Aberg (12-1), and Jon Rahm (14-1). Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods is a 125-1 longshot. The field will be competing for a total 2024 PGA Championship purse of $17.5 million, with the winner taking home $3.15 million.

Koepka enters as the defending tournament champion after edging out Scheffler and Viktor Hovland by two strokes in 2023. Should you back Koepka again this week, or would it make more sense to target a longshot like Hideki Matsuyama (35-1) or Tony Finau (35-1) with your PGA one and done picks? Before locking in your 2024 PGA Championship one and done picks, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors, signature events, and big money tournaments critical.

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks.

McClure has been on fire with his One and Done picks in 2024. At The American Express he backed Justin Thomas, who finished in third place and took home $635,600. At the Genesis Invitational, McClure tabbed Patrick Cantlay, who finished in fourth place at the signature event, as his top OAD pick. At the Cognizant Classic, McClure's top one and done pick, Min Woo Lee, finished in a tie for second place. Finally, at the Arnold Palmer Invitation, another signature event, McClure recommended using Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris. The Result: Scheffler won the event by five strokes, and Zalatoris finished in fourth place.

His hot steak continued at the Players Championship, where McClure again recommended using Scheffler (if was still available) and Xander Schauffele. Both players were in contention until the end, with Scheffler coming out with the win and Schauffele finishing in second place! Then, at the Valspar Championship, McClure recommended using Cameron Young, who finished in second place, in OAD pools.

More recently, at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, McClure recommended using 50-1 longshot Alex Noren in One and Done pools. Noren would go on to be in contention until the end, before finishing in third place, two strokes off the lead.

Now, McClure has dialed in on the PGA Championship golf tournament and just locked in his one and done picks and PGA predictions. They are a must-see for any player looking for an edge in their One and Done pool. You can only see McClure's PGA Championship 2024 one and done picks at SportsLine .

Morikawa won the 2020 PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park to notch his first career major championship, The 27-year-old enters the PGA Championship 2024 ranked 29th in strokes gained off-the-tee (0.369), 38th in strokes gained tee-to-green (0.558), and 43rd in strokes gained around the green (0.229). Here Are All 16 LIV Golfers in the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club

John schwarb | 20 hours ago.

Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith, Talor Gooch and Jon Rahm are all players to watch this week at the PGA.

Golf’s second major of 2024 is here, and fans can rejoice in how PGA Tour-LIV Golf squabbles are put aside with players from both sides settling matters on the course.

And the PGA of America has helped LIV Golf bring a sizable contingent to Valhalla Golf Club.

A bit more than 10% of the field—16 of 156 players—is from the Saudi-backed league, up from nine players a year ago at the PGA won by LIV’s Brooks Koepka. Koepka and eight other players were exempt into the field based on various criteria, and seven accepted special invitations. The PGA of America has significant leeway to invite whoever it wants , and it saw fit to invite perhaps a larger number of LIV players than many expected.

Thirteen players from LIV Golf were in the field at last month’s Masters.

Here are all 16 in order of Official World Golf Ranking, with how they qualified, recent history and outlook.

OWGR: 5th How qualified: Won 2023 Masters Recent history: Second in 2024 LIV points standings, T45 at Masters Skinny: LIV’s seismic offseason signing hasn’t won yet but hasn’t played poorly either with four top-5 finishes and just one outside the top 10. Had a disappointing Masters defense but will have less pressure this week.

Tyrrell Hatton

OWGR: 18th How qualified: T15 in 2023 PGA Championship Recent history: T5 LIV Golf Singapore, T9 at Masters Skinny: Fiery Englishman comes in off his best LIV finish. On a streak of nine consecutive made cuts in majors with five top-20 finishes.

Brooks Koepka

OWGR: 39th How qualified: Won 2018, 2019, 2023 PGA Championship Recent history: Won LIV Golf Singapore, T45 at Masters Skinny: The defending champion has his swagger back after winning two weeks ago and lives for majors . A third PGA would put him in rarefied air; only Tiger Woods has won as many in the last four decades.

Cameron Smith

OWGR: 61st How qualified: Won 2022 British Open Recent history: Second at LIV Golf Singapore, T6 at Masters Skinny: Indifferent LIV season got a boost in Singapore, the short-game ace has four top-9 finishes in last six majors starting with the 2022 win at St. Andrews.

Adrian Meronk

OWGR: 65th How qualified: Special exemption Recent history: T13 LIV Golf Singapore, missed cut at the Masters Skinny: The PGA traditionally invites all players inside the top 100 in the world, and Meronk remains there after three DP World Tour wins in the 2023 season. Was T40 in first PGA appearance last year.

Lucas Herbert

OWGR: 90th How qualified: Special exemption Recent history: T29 LIV Golf Singapore Skinny: The Aussie did not qualify for the Masters and only has one top-15 finish all year on LIV. Was T13 at the 2022 PGA.

Joaquin Niemann

OWGR: 91st How qualified: Special exemption Recent history: T8 LIV Golf Singapore, two-time winner earlier in year, T22 Masters Skinny: The Chilean got a special invite from the Masters for globetrotting that included an Australian Open win and played well off it. Now will make 14th consecutive major start, a streak that could be harder to maintain if he falls outside the top 100 in the world.

Patrick Reed

OWGR: 93rd How qualified: Special exemption Recent history: T15 LIV Golf Singapore, T12 Masters Skinny: The 2018 Masters champ remains inside the top 100 after a decent Masters but his LIV season hasn’t been notable as he’s 30th in season points.

OWGR: 109th How qualified: Special exemption Recent history: T27 LIV Golf Singapore Skinny: The 22-year-old Spaniard won twice in the offseason on the Asian Tour, which is looked favorably upon. His only other major start is a T39 in the 2023 U.S. Open.

Bryson DeChambeau

OWGR: 124th How qualified: Won 2020 U.S. Open Recent history: T28 LIV Golf Singapore, T6 Masters Skinny: Had a three-event stretch of top-7 finishes in LIV before a pair of T28 efforts, led after 36 holes at Augusta before fading on weekend. T4 at last year’s PGA.

Dean Burmester

OWGR: 133rd How qualified: Special exemption Recent history: T17 LIV Golf Singapore, won LIV Golf Miami Skinny: The Zimbabwean is third in LIV points and won back-to-back late last year on the DP World Tour, perhaps all of that factored into being allowed to make his fourth straight PGA Championship start.

Phil Mickelson

OWGR: 160th How qualified: Won 2005, 2021 PGA Championship Recent history: T22 LIV Golf Singapore, T43 Masters Skinny: The 53-year-old hasn’t shown much form this season, 34th in LIV points with one top-10 finish.

Andy Ogletree

OWGR: 220th How qualified: Top 3, International Federation OWGR list Recent history: T45 LIV Golf Singapore Skinny: The 26-year-old Georgia Tech grad had his best LIV Golf finish two events ago, a T5 in Adelaide, and now makes his first major start since 2020.

Dustin Johnson

OWGR: 392nd How qualified: Won 2020 Masters Recent history: T7 LIV Golf Singapore, missed cut at the Masters Skinny: The 2022 LIV Golf season champion won his third career LIV event in February in Las Vegas then didn’t have another top-10 until two weeks ago at Singapore. Has five top-10s in the PGA, the last being T2 in 2020.

Talor Gooch

OWGR: 668th How qualified: Special exemption Recent history: T4 LIV Golf Singapore Skinny: The most polarizing LIV golfer in the field said in February that a potential Rory McIlroy Grand Slam would have an asterisk for not being against all the game’s best. This could be Gooch’s only major start of the year as he wasn’t invited to the Masters and said he won’t qualify for the Opens.

Martin Kaymer

OWGR: 4,338th How qualified: Won 2010 PGA Championship Recent history: T20 LIV Golf Singapore Skinny: The 39-year-old German is set at the PGA thanks to his win at Whistling Straits but his last made cut was 2018. He’s 42nd in LIV points with a best finish of T14.

Not unlike how many of the horses arrive for the annual Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs some 15 miles to its west, Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, is poised to host numerous thoroughbreds in top form for the 106th running of the PGA Championship.

A review of the course and other information is below the ranking of those projected to contend.

It’d be a curious opinion to want the sport’s top talents to descend at the second major of 2024 in form other than the current, so it’s a timely bonus that Valhalla will give all 156 entrants a terrific opportunity to stretch and showcase what they got.

This is the fourth edition of the PGA Championship on the Jack Nicklaus design. After testing as a par 72 in 1996 and 2000, it’s been a par 71 since Rory McIlroy prevailed in 2014. The field’s average that week was a modest 71.539, but that’s when the tournament was contested in August.

It’s late enough in the growing season this year for Valhalla to present its fully formed self, but it does so now capable of extending to 7,609 yards. That’s 151 yards longer than a decade ago, but the expectation is that it will again provide a fair and consistently strong exam. While visually striking in places, Valhalla’s setup as a proper stage is the narrative. The prepared will be rewarded on an exceptionally balanced course.

Because it’s a Nicklaus design, long hitters will be licking their chops off tees. With five par 4s tipping at 484 yards or longer piggybacking three par 5s, the driver will be a busy stick. Yet, in 2014, Valhalla surrendered just 278 yards on average in distance of all drives. That was 11th-lowest of all courses measured that season and respectful of the fact that greens average only 5,000 square feet. The formula favors course management over all alternatives. This is major, after all.

But make no mistake, confident drivers will feast. McIlroy prevailed in 2014 at 16-under 268 and was among five with four rounds in the 60s. He led the field in distance of all drives, total driving, Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and par-4 scoring.

McIlroy is among the 34 in this week’s field who competed here 10 years ago. The then-new, heat-tolerant T-1 bentgrass on the greens held its own in the muggy conditions at the time. It was a big deal because it was the first time the strain hosted a major. The darker-green surface is ready to touch 13 feet on the Stimpmeter this week; that is, if it wasn’t subject to persistent rain immediately in advance of and during the tournament.

There’s at least a slight risk of precipitation every day, although Thursday and Sunday are the early clubhouse leaders for cooperative conditions. Wind won’t be a significant factor at any time, so it’ll simply be a matter of dodging lightning and cloudbursts. Daytime highs might not hit 80 degrees until Saturday. Even with a warmup for the finale, it won’t be sweltering. If it’s soft, fairways will play wider but a blend of bluegrass and fescue trimmed to four inches will grab wayward strikes on either side.

In addition to a lifetime exemption into the tournament, the winner of the Wanamaker trophy will receive exemptions into the next five editions of each of the other three majors. He’ll also secure spots in the last two Signature Events of 2024 and the 2025 editions of The Sentry and THE PLAYERS Championship. His PGA TOUR membership exemption also will extend to the maximum five seasons through 2029.

You won't believe how much farther PGA Tour Champions players are hitting the ball now than in their primes

170830-bernhard-langer.jpg

Icon Sportswire

Dustin Johnson's prodigious playoff drive at last week's Northern Trust was the latest reminder that today's PGA Tour pros hit the ball a lot farther than their predecessors. The combination of better technology in golf clubs and golf balls, and a more fit golfer in Johnson, allowed him to take a line off the tee on the 18th hole at Glen Oaks Club that even the game's longest hitters 20 years ago couldn't have imagined.

It's not just today's players, however, who are hitting it farther. Yesterday's players—the guys playing the PGA Tour Champions—are hitting it farther than ever, too. And we don't just mean farther than previous generations of senior tour players, but farther than they ever hit it in their primes.

To find out how much farther, we went down the list of driving-distance leaders on the PGA Tour Champions this season and then looked up what some of those bigger-name players averaged off the tee during the PGA Tour season in which they turned 30. (We picked 30 because it's a nice, round number, but it also happens to be the average age of Johnson and Rory McIlroy, the PGA Tour's two longest hitters this year.) The results were eye-popping, even for the 60-year-olds on the 50-and-older circuit.

Let's start at the top with John Daly, who at 51, leads the PGA Tour Champions with an average of 299 yards off the tee. At age 30 in 1996 Daly only averaged 288.8 yards, which was part of eight consecutive seasons in which he led the PGA Tour in driving distance. To be fair, Daly had seasons with much higher figures, topped by a 314.3 average in 2003. Daly has always been freakishly long, so he's not the best guy to look at. Let's move on.

Kenny Perry ranks fourth on the PGA Tour Champions in 2017 at 295 yards per poke. In 1990, he had a driving-distance average of just 270.8 yards. That's not bad considering Tom Purtzer led the PGA Tour that season at 279.6 yards (for comparison, Rory McIlroy's 316.4 yards leads this season) but that equates to nearly a 9-percent increase in driving distance from the time Perry was 30 to his current average as a 57-year-old.

The increase is even bigger for Fred Couples, if we use his driving-distance average (a whopping 300.4 yards) from 2015, the last time he played enough rounds on the PGA Tour Champions to have official stats. In 1990, two years before Freddie won the Masters and ascended to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, he averaged a measly 272.6 yards on his tee shots. Of the players we looked at, Couples' 10.2-percent increase led the way. (It should be noted that the Callaway Big Bertha was launched in 1991 , ushering in a new era where driver heads grew to the size of small microwaves, giving a boost to driving distance stats.)

What about the senior tour's dominant force, Bernhard Langer? At 60, the German checks in at 25th in distance at 280.4 yards. But that's up 7.72 percent from his 260.3 average in 1987, two years removed from the first of his two Masters titles. That's right, Langer is significantly longer now than he was 30 years ago . We know the guy is a physical marvel, but no matter how much time he spends in the gym, those numbers are crazy.

Anyway, these examples go on and on, so we decided to make a list ordered from biggest distance increase (by percentage) to smallest:

170830-drivers-stats2.jpg

Earlier this year, the USGA asserted there's only a "slow creep" when it comes to distance increases across all tours in the past 13 years. But if this trend continues, it makes you wonder just how far someone like Dustin Johnson will be able to hit it when he's on the senior tour.

Chris Gotterup’s career earnings on the PGA Tour through 26 events was $837,558.

Gotterup led by four after 54 holes and ended up winning by six at the third opposite-field event on the PGA Tour’s 2024 schedule, which was held at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina.

Full prize money and FedEx Cup points only follow victories in the non-additional events, but, a win is a win and Gotterup banked $720,000 for his victory. He also earned a spot in the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in five days.
