In the inland areas of Fethiye, there are lush valleys and beautiful plains, and the shoreline is golden in color, bordered by turquoise Mediterranean water. With many Lycian rock tombs, historical sites, and ruins of ancient cities , Fethiye is a heavenly place.

The oldest settlement in the area is an ancient city called Telmessos, which dates to the 3rd millennium BCE. Until Alexander the Great captured it, Telmessos was an important trade center and a member of the Delian League.

Although the names Telmessos, Makri, and Anastasiopolis were all used interchangeably to refer to the settlement, the title Makri replaced the others and became the region’s name after the 10th century.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Makri was a thriving community. The enormous city walls , a lucrative perfume company, and a commercial hub indicate a flourishing city.

The area was known as Meğri by the Ottomans, who conquered the area in 1424. Until the nineteenth century, the area was inhabited by Greeks who lived in the nearby villages surrounding the Telmessos ruins. The ruins of those villages and the ancient city of Telmessos can still be seen in Fethiye today.

2. Blue Lagoon – Kumburnu Plaji

Everyone has seen pictures of this beach! It’s the most famous part of Oludeniz and one that everyone must visit at least once. Locally known as Kumburnu, this national park has the impossible blue sea on one side and the sheltered, unbelievably clear lagoon on the other.

You can swim on either side, and plentiful sunbeds and amenities are available- although you have to pay. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes (even a Starbucks!), and the beach stays open until 7 p.m. throughout the summer.

However, a word of warning – tiny jellyfish are in the lagoon side at certain times of the year. While these don’t cause a severe sting, they can still be quite irritating!

3. Belceğiz Beach

This is the main Oludeniz beach that is open for everyone to use. You can take your towel and lay it on the sand for free, or you can pay for a sunbed. The water here is always quite wavy, which can be good fun; however, it quickly goes from shallow to deep.

The good news is that the water here is super-clear, and it’s a scenic beach to sit and enjoy while watching the paragliders land.

Only accessible by water, Butterfly Valley hosts over a hundred species of butterflies. Although it is challenging to spot butterflies in the summer since they aren’t often around, Butterfly Valley still promises a memorable experience with its serenity and peacefulness.

5. Kabak Beach 

Are you ready for a real adventure? Then add Kabak Beach to your list! A truly unspoiled paradise, Kabak Beach has yet to be invaded by resorts and hotels . You’ll need to bring your own food and drinks as there are no cafes, but a few sunbeds are available for a fee.

9. Kidrak Beach

You can easily reach Kidrak Beach by car or taxi from the town of Oludeniz, which takes less than ten minutes. You pay a minimal entrance fee, but once you’re in, there is a large cafe, a picnic area, a vast beach, plenty of sunbeds, and even small open bungalows for rent. You get a fantastic view of the huge, soaring mountains behind you and back over to Oludeniz.

While the beach is a little rocky at the shoreline, it’s a popular spot to escape the hustle and bustle for a few hours.

10. Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is the perfect spot if you want to kick back and relax away from mass tourism. The only downside is that it takes an hour by boat tour to get there, but once you do – it’s incredible! This is an excellent place for anyone who loves to snorkel and check out the underwater world – it’s literally packed with all manner of marine life. The pine forests also give plenty of shade, and the water is as clear as clear can be.

You will need to bring your own refreshments to this beach.

11. Help Beach/See Me Beach

Around 10 minutes away from Fethiye Marina by car, you’ll find the comically named Help Beach. This is a private beach club, but anyone can visit as long as you pay the small entrance fee and buy drinks/food during the day.

If you’re more into chilling out, consider hiring a private boat and crew for the day and sail around the countless islands more peacefully. You can also visit Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi) without going on a full-day trip that takes you all around the islands. A taxi boat leaves Ölüdeniz beachfront every hour and returns several times throughout the day, with the last service back at 5 p.m.

This is ideal if you only want to go to Butterfly Valley or you want to spend more than half an hour there, which is all a regular boat trip will allow you before you head to the next spot.

19. Kayaköy Ruins

21. Visit Calis

Calis is located ten minutes from Fethiye town or around half an hour from Oludeniz. It’s a fantastic place to go for the day. We’ve already mentioned Calis Beach and the sunsets, but the town itself is a nice change from the busy nature of many other local resorts. It’s also a little cheaper here for some reason!

You can enjoy a traditional meal on the beachfront and check out the sunset, or you can take a short walk right down to Fethiye Marina if your feet allow it.

22. Explore The Rock Tombs Of Tlos

The Rock Tombs of Tlos are an extraordinary complex of ancient ruins that include an acropolis, an Ottoman fortress and stable, a necropolis, a stadium, a massive theatre, a Christian-era Basilica and a temple, many school complexes, and an agora.

The ruins are 30 kilometers from the ruins of Xanthos. So, take a day to visit these ancient cities and immerse yourself in Fethiye’s archaic surroundings.

23. Fethiye Castle – Fethiye Kalesi 

Fethiye Castle is perched majestically on a hill overlooking the charming town of Fethiye in Turkey. This once-imposing fortress, also known as Fethiye Kalesi or Paspatur Castle, offers you views for days. Said to have been built by the Knights of Rhodes in the 16th century (but some say otherwise), the castle has witnessed centuries of conquests and changes in rulership.

Today, its crumbling walls and towers provide an excellent vantage point for sweeping views of the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the bustling marina below. It will take you around 1-2 hours to hike up – depending on your abilities. 

24. Walk The Lycian Way

The Lycian Way is a famous long-distance walking trail that runs from Hisaronu, close to Oludeniz, to Antalya. That’s around 520 km long. Don’t panic; nobody expects you to walk the whole way, but you can walk just a little and check out the sights along the way. Remember to take plenty of water and sun cream with you during the hottest months.

The trail is clearly marked and will take you around what was ancient Lycia, with countless ruins to pass by and explore. This was formerly the trade route of the Lycians, a civilization that dates back to the 14-15th centuries BC.

The walk isn’t challenging in terms of terrain for the most part, but the length is obviously what makes it stand out! With that in mind, walk a little of the coastline and say you’ve been on this famous trail!

25. Gizlikent Waterfall

Gizlikent Waterfall is a Turkish hidden gem waiting to be explored. This natural wonder is a refreshing escape from the bustling city life, offering a tranquil oasis in the heart of nature.

As you venture into the gorge leading to the waterfall at the end, you’ll find yourself wading through crystal-clear waters and towering canyon walls – go slowly so as not to fall.

Even if you don’t like the idea of paragliding off the massive Babadag Mountain in Oludeniz, that doesn’t mean you can’t go up there and check out the views from the top.

There is also a lovely restaurant at the 1700 meter mark, where you can have breakfast, lunch, or dinner, a coffee, ice cream, and check out the view. It’s incredible at sunset, too.

I am at the end, and I know I already mentioned the Fethiye Bazaar, but then I had a thought – this should really be an item all on its own.

These bustling local markets are so vibrant, located in the heart of Fethiye’s Old Town. As you step into this lively and colorful maze of stalls, you’ll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and aromas. The bazaar comes alive with a symphony of voices as friendly vendors enthusiastically peddle their wares, from handcrafted textiles and intricate ceramics to aromatic spices and fresh produce.

It’s the perfect place to practice your haggling skills ( find my guide on haggling here ), as bargaining is not just encouraged but expected. As you wander through the labyrinthine lanes, you’ll discover an array of treasures, including traditional Turkish carpets, unique jewelry, and a tantalizing assortment of street food vendors offering mouthwatering local delicacies.

Alternatively, you will find both Hisaronu and Ovacik around a ten-minute taxi drive up the hill. These hilltop resorts do not have a beach but offer a cheaper holiday experience with countless bars, restaurants, and shops. It’s also effortless to get down to Oludeniz beach by taxi or by dolmus.

These two resorts are ideal for groups, families, or those who want to save a little cash. Hisaronu, in particular, is very lively during the evening hours!

Fethiye, including Calis, offers similar holiday vibes, albeit more spread out and in a more city-like structure. Fethiye offers cheaper accommodation than Oludeniz, but you will need to get a bus or taxi to the beach in most cases. Calis is a great spot for families and couples, while the rest of Fethiye is an all-around kind of deal!

Most people don’t realize the sheer scale of the Fethiye region. So, make sure you double-check the area you intend to stay in so you do not have to spend a large amount of cash on buses and taxis to visit the beach or a particular site regularly.

How To Get To Fethiye

Flying to Dalaman Airport, around 50 kilometers from Fethiye, is the quickest way to get there. It would be best to take a taxi or public transportation to Fethiye once you arrive at the airport .

Ferries from Greek islands are another option for getting to Fethiye.

10 Best Things to Do in Fethiye, Turkey

Looking for the best things to do in Fethiye? I utterly loved my time in this Turkish market town so, here are all of my top tips and things to add to your itinerary.

My trip to Fethiye was towards the end of my second time visiting Turkey . After a wonderful time exploring Izmir and Istanbul, we headed south to the beach for some well-deserved relaxation.

And it was brilliant – there’s no shortage of things to do in Fethiye. Beautiful scenery, fascinating history, and great beaches, plus some unexpectedly beautiful natural wonders that blew me away.

Whether you are after adventure, relaxation, or local culture, Fethiye is one of the best places to visit in Turkey.

10 Incredible Things to Do in Fethiye, Turkey

So, without further ado, here are my favourite things to do in Fethiye.

1. Visit the Amyntas Rock Tombs

Of all the activities in Fethiye, the Amyntas Rock Tombs were one of my favourites. This group of ancient rock-cut tombs is carved into the cliffs overlooking the city.

They are believed to have been built for members of the Lycian aristocracy in the 4th century BCE. 

The tombs are located in the city centre of the town. You can reach them either on foot or by bus depending on where you are staying in the Fethiye area.

When you reach the area, it’s a rather steep climb up a hill to actually get to the tombs. You also have to pay a small fee of 12TL (about £0.5) to enter the area.

Once you’ve entered the tomb complex, there’s yet another hill to climb to reach the tombs themselves. On a very hot day, this can get pretty tiring! However, it’s worth it once you reach them.

The tombs are fascinating and incredibly well-preserved considering their age. The elaborate and well-preserved design features carved columns and reliefs depicting scenes from Greek mythology.

They also provide insight into the ancient Lycian people’s religious and cultural beliefs and are undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Fethiye.

Top Tip: I recommend bringing a bottle of water with you when you visit here. There is a small cafe opposite the stairs though where you can grab a drink after exploring the tombs.

2. Wade Through Saklikent Gorge

Another of my absolute favourite things to do in Fethiye, Saklikent Gorge is a natural canyon located near the city. It is one of Europe’s largest and deepest canyons and a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. 

To get to the canyon, you can either take a bus or get a private taxi. I recommend taking the bus (this is what we did) because it’s very affordable, and doesn’t take too long.

The journey from Fethiye bus station was around 45 minutes.

When you arrive, you’ll find a few restaurants and cafes surrounded by plush seating overlooking the river. You’ll also find signs advertising water sports such as river rafting, kayaking, and canyoning.

We decided not to do this, however, and simply paid the small entrance fee of 10TL (£0.44!!), and entered the gorge.

Inside the gorge

The first part is easy – boardwalks along the edge of the cliff. Then, you’ll reach another stopping point with a cafe, and places to sit. But then, and this is the good part, you get to the gorge itself. 

Formed by the rushing waters of the Saklikent River and surrounded by towering cliffs, the gorge offers a dramatic and scenic setting. We visited in June and the water was still fairly high.

To get into the gorge, we had to wade through some pretty fast rapids that came up to our knees. But, once we passed that bit, the water was much calmer. 

The gorge was beautiful, and a thankful break from the midday sun. The deeper you got into the gorge the cooler it got and the prettier it got.

The tall walls shut out the world and created a peaceful environment that was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle. It’s without a doubt one of the best things to do in Fethiye.

3. Explore Kayakoy Ruins

Kayakoy Ghost Town was one of the more unique things we did in Fethiye. It was also one of the least touristy and we hardly saw any other people exploring the village.

You can get there by bus from the bus station, and it takes about 30 minutes. Once you’ve paid the small entrance fee of 10TL, head up the small slope into the village. 

When you enter, the sight is pretty impressive. Kayakoy is completely abandoned. Built in the 1700s by Greek Orthodox residents, it was abandoned in the early 20th century during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. But the ruins that remain are surprisingly well preserved.

The village offers a unique glimpse into the way of life of the former Greek residents. The abandoned stone houses, churches, and schools set among the hillside are very peaceful, albeit a bit eerie.

You can also see the impressive pillars and columns of the former church and the large bell tower of the former Greek school. It’s really strange to walk around, but also incredibly fascinating.

Top Tip: There’s a lady right outside the entrance to the village who has a little stall selling homemade soaps. You’ll also find another small cafe opposite selling gözleme (Turkish pancakes) .

4. Visit the Blue Lagoon

Arguably one of the most famous places in all of Turkey, the Blue Lagoon is a stunning natural lagoon located in Oludeniz .

You’ll find crystal clear turquoise waters and a sandy beach, surrounded by lush green hills and the Babadag mountain range. Its close proximity to the mountains means there are several ways to see the lagoon – from the beach itself or, for the best views, from the mountains above. 

As it’s protected by the Turkish government as a nature reserve, there are strict rules in place to ensure its preservation. Nonetheless, the lagoon is popular for swimming, and sunbathing, with the parameters set out on the bay. 

The beach is also surrounded by small cafes and restaurants so you can grab a drink or a bite to eat while taking in the breathtaking scenery.

The Blue Lagoon is widely considered one of the most beautiful spots in Turkey and is well worth a visit if you’re in Fethiye.

5. Go Paragliding

Speaking of the Blue Lagoon, I mentioned that one of the best views of it was from above. Well, how about circling the bay while paragliding back down to the sandy beach below ? 

Located just a short drive from Fethiye, most people looking to paraglide in this area jump from the top of the Babadag mountain. From there, you can see gorgeous mountainous scenery and great views of the Blue Lagoon below.

Paragliding in Oludeniz is incredibly popular, mainly due to its stunning natural scenery. In fact, it’s one of the best places to do it in the world.

Several experienced and certified paragliding operators in the area offer tandem flights, which allow visitors to fly with a professional instructor. The flights are usually around 20-30 minutes long and offer a unique and thrilling way to experience the region.

This is definitely a bucket list experience!

6. Take a Cable Car up Babadag Mountain

Of course, jumping off the mountain isn’t the only reason to head to the top of Babadag. You can also take a cable car up the mountain to view the gorgeous scenery from above. 

The cable car ride takes about 20-30 minutes and offers breathtaking views of the scenery below. Once at the top, you can explore the summit, take lots of photographs, watch the paragliders, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. 

There are also a few cafes and restaurants at the top of the mountain, where you can relax and enjoy refreshments while taking in the views.

We stopped here to have a smoothie and enjoy the views, which was very relaxing.

7. Visit Fethiye Museum

The Fethiye Museum is a great place to visit for anyone interested in the history behind this Turkish market town. Housed in a historic Ottoman building, it showcases the early settlement, the Ottoman period, and the more recent cultural heritage of the area.

The museum features a range of exhibits, including artefacts, manuscripts, paintings, and photographs. There are also exhibits dedicated to the local wildlife, geology, and geography of the area.

The museum is easily accessible from the town centre and is open to the public throughout the year.

8. Explore Fethiye Market

The Fethiye Market , also known as the Tuesday Bazaar, is a weekly market that takes place in the town centre. As you may have guessed by the name, it takes place every Tuesday and is popular with both locals and tourists.

You’ll find a wide range of goods in the market. There’s a fresh food section where we saw locals stocking up on vegetables and meat. There were also plenty of specialities, like spices, herbs, and cheeses. We also found souvenirs, like magnets, towels, statues, and homemade Turkish delight.

The market is a lively and colourful place and a great way to experience the culture and local atmosphere of Fethiye.

9. Take a Boat Trip to the Butterfly Valley

One of the most popular trips from Fethiye is to the popular Butterfly Valley. This remote cove is located along the Aegean coast, surrounded by towering mountains and lush greenery.

The valley is named after the thousands of rare and colourful butterflies that live in the area and is a great destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

You can catch the boat to Butterfly Valley from Oludinez. We got the bus from Fethiye and then, bought our tickets from a vendor on the beach. The boat journey itself took about 20 minutes.

We went in the early afternoon which was actually a good time to go because it meant we had the beach almost to ourselves for a while before the big tour boats arrived. 

Alternatively, if you’d prefer to book a tour boat, you can easily arrange these online. This is usually a full-day trip and they’ll take you to a few different spots along the coast, including Butterfly Valley.

Once you arrive, you can swim in the ocean, relax on the sandy beach, grab a bite to eat from one of the few food vendors or take a hike through the valley to the waterfall at the end.

There was a small price to pay to do the hike, but, if you visit at the right time of year, you can see some beautiful butterflies on the trail and explore the lush vegetation in the valley. If you visit around June, you should be able to see a few.

Then, once you’ve had your fill of butterflies and sunbathing, catch the boat back to Oludinez beach. 

Top Tip: The boat ride can be a bit rocky, so I recommend bringing tablets if you’re prone to motion sickness. Even though it’s a short journey, the waves can be brutal.

10. Sunbathe on Calis Beach

Calis Beach is the longest beach in the Fethiye area. With coarse sand, clear turquoise waters, plenty of sunbeds, and distant views of the nearby mountains, Calis Beach is a great place to relax.

The beach is surrounded by a promenade that is lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, so it’s also a good spot for dining and shopping. We had a lovely meal here at one of the restaurants and it was lovely to be able to sit on the oceanfront and watch the waves.

Plus, in the evenings, Calis Beach comes alive with live music and street performers.

Whether you are seeking a relaxing day at the beach, an active day of water sports, or a night out on the town, Calis is one of the best places to visit in Fethiye.

What is Fethiye like?

Situated in the Mugla region of Turkey, near Dalaman and the oh-so-popular Oludinez , we opted for Fethiye because we wanted to experience more of an authentic Turkish town. 

Fethiye is, by definition, a market town. Located in southwestern Turkey, it’s known for its turquoise waters, historical ruins, and outdoor activities such as paragliding, kayaking, and even hiking (have you heard of the famous Lycian Way ?). 

There’s a range of things to do there and a mix of modern life and traditional Turkish culture. You can order a piña colada at a beachfront restaurant if you want. But you could also buy spices at an authentic Turkish market and visit an abandoned ghost town.

It’s also a very beautiful place. I wasn’t exaggerating when I said there was stunning nature near Fethiye. The town is surrounded by scenic hills and the famous Oludeniz beach is located nearby.

Of course, this is pretty touristy these days, but it’s still a natural beauty. We had so much fun in this part of the world and there iI definitely recommend visiting Fethiye.

Where to stay in Fethiye

This was something we wondered for a while. We debated between a harbourfront hotel, a private villa or a more affordable guest house type accommodation. Overall, there are several different options, depending on what you’re looking for.

Here are some of the best areas to stay in and around Fethiye:

• Oludeniz – for beach access and outdoor activities. This is the town connected to the famous Blue Lagoon. It has a great beach, but we found the town itself to be rather touristy with fake English shops and places trying to lure you in with ‘English Breakfasts’ and ‘Sky Sports’. Nonetheless, if you’re after a home-from-home stay, Oludinez could be just what you’re looking for.
• Calis Beach – for a more relaxed, beach-oriented stay. Calis Beach is the largest beach in Fethiye. Alongside that beach is lined with high-rise hotels and all-inclusive resorts. The beach itself is a long strength of slightly coarse sand, but it’s still great for sunbathing and hitting the waves.
• Fethiye City Centre – for proximity to restaurants, shops, and historic sites. The city centre is a great place to stay if you want to surround yourself with the historic side of Fethiye. You’ll be near rock tombs, the market, and plenty of restaurants. It’s also where you’ll find the main transport hub to the surrounding areas, so it is the perfect place to base yourself to go exploring.
• Hisarönü – for a livelier nightlife scene. A small, touristy resort, Hisarönü is great for those who want to explore the nightlife of the area. Consisting mainly of small hotels and private villas, it’s ideally located between Oludinez and Fethiye. You’ll also have great views across the Taurus Mountains.

We chose to stay on the outskirts of Fethiye city centre. We rented a villa and it was perfect. Walking distance to the town, close proximity to restaurants and public transport links, and easy to explore other areas of Fethiye.

What airport is near Fethiye?

The journey from the airport to Fethiye city centre itself was a fairly long one. The nearest airport to Fethiye is the Dalaman International Airport which is located approximately 30 miles (50km) from the city centre. The journey will take around an hour.

The airport is very well connected, however, with direct flights from many cities in Europe as well as international flights from elsewhere in Turkey.

From the airport, the best and easiest way to get to Fethiye is to take a taxi or arrange for a private transfer in advance.

Final Thoughts on the Best Things to Do in Fethiye

Fethiye genuinely has something for everyone. You can go sunbathing one minute and then paraglide off a mountain the next. You can see historic rock tombs that have been carved into a rock for thousands of years, explore abandoned villages, and walk through beautiful canyons that will take your breath away.

Plus, I think it has something for every kind of tourist too. Families will love the peaceful Calis beach, those who like a home-from-home will love Oludinez town, adrenaline junkies will love Babadag, and people who enjoy immersing themselves in history will love the rock tombs and museums.

So, whether you are a history buff, an adventurer, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, be sure to add Fethiye to your list of must-visit destinations in Turkey .

If it's all about location, Fethiye is one of the best places to visit in Turkey's Mediterranean region. This harbor-front town is the perfect launching pad to explore the many tourist attractions and things to do along the famed slice of lush coastline known as the Turquoise Coast.

As well as being a major destination for boat day trips and the starting point for yacht multi-day tours, Fethiye is in a prime position to use as a base for days spent relaxing on the region's beaches or heading into the surrounding hills to explore the ruins of this area's ancient Lycian culture.

Fethiye itself is a prosperous but laid-back kind of place; just what you need to return to after a day's hectic sightseeing of mighty rock-cut tombs and mountain-top, UNESCO-protected ruins or sunbathing bliss, boating, and paragliding action.

Fethiye is home to one of the most beautiful natural harbors in Turkey and is known as a base for setting out on a yachting trip. The most famous of these trips is the Blue Cruise, a three-night yacht journey along the coast from Fethiye to Olympos with stops at Kaş and the Kekova Island area along the way.

Blue Cruise trips set out daily during the summer months. They're a great way to experience this beautiful and rugged slice of coastline, with plenty of time for sunbathing onboard and swimming stops.

If you don't have time for this journey, though, there are plenty of one-day cruise options offered from Fethiye harbor.

The most popular of these is the 12 Islands Tour, which cruises around the islands of Fethiye Bay, with plenty of swim stops along the way.

Turkey's most famous beach is 15 kilometers south from Fethiye. The calm turquoise water, sheltered from the sea, with its white-sand beach rimmed by dense pine forest, is impossibly perfect, which is why people have been flocking here for years now.

Some of Ölüdeniz's sheen has been shaken off over the past two decades, as package tourism arrived on the scene, but the lagoon area has not seen the construction development of other tourism hot spots, and the village attached to the lagoon is still a low-story unobtrusive affair.

If you don't want to swim or sunbathe on the beach here, the other big activity is tandem paragliding.

Mt. Baba (Baba Dağ) dominates the scenery inland, and paragliders launch themselves off the peak throughout the summer months.

The aerial views of lush forested hills and turquoise blue water have made Ölüdeniz one of the most renowned tandem paragliding destinations in the world.

The popular paragliding at Fethiye experience offers the typical Ölüdeniz tandem paragliding trip, with fully-qualified paragliding pilots and a choice of departure times from their Ölüdeniz office.

Up until the 1920s, Kayaköy (ancient Karmylassos), eight kilometers south from Fethiye, had a thriving mixed population of Greeks and Turks who had lived together for centuries.

The 1923 Population Exchange changed all of that, uprooting ethnic Greeks across Turkey and sending them to live in Greece while making ethnic Turks who lived in Greece abandon their lives there.

The exchange created heartbreak and much trauma among those who were forced to leave, and the somber results of this are no better seen than in Kayaköy.

The dilapidated, eerie stone village that snakes across the hillside here has been left to slowly decay since its Greek population left.

Among the ruins are the Katapongagia Church and Taxiarchis Church, which both still have some beautiful interior decoration.

This lovely beach, secreted between two sharp cliffs, is home to the Jersey Tiger Butterfly.

One of the joys of Butterfly Valley is that it is unreachable by road. You either have to trek here from Faralya village, high above on the cliff, or take a boat. During summer shuttle-boats depart for Butterfly Valley a couple of times daily from Ölüdeniz beach.

There are great hiking opportunities in the lush, forested gorge behind the beach, though most people are happy to just spend the day soaking up the sun on the sand.

The Butterfly Valley boat tour offers a full-day cruise from Ölüdeniz, visiting Butterfly Valley to relax or hike, as well as anchoring at other coves for swim stops. This is a great opportunity to take in the coastal views of the area. Lunch is included.

This ravine, 30 kilometers southeast from Fethiye, is cut deeply into the mountains of the Akdağlar mountain range. Most visitors come to admire the scenery of soaring cliffs on a hike inside the gorge.

The trail into the gorge follows a wooden boardwalk along the cliffside, set high above the river. The last section of the trail is reached by fording the swift-running river itself and then walking through the narrow fissure to the waterfall at the end.

Cushion-strewn teahouses are set beside the river, both at the entrance to the gorge and inside the gorge at the base where hikers ford the river.

There are also canyoning and rafting trips along the river for the more actively inclined visitor.

Xanthos was the capital of ancient Lycia, sometimes called "the oldest republic in the world."

This league of 20 cities was governed by a popular assembly and a president who ruled from Xanthos, and the ruins of this grand city are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although many of Xanthos' most beautiful monuments were taken to England in the 19th century, some fine mosaics are still in situ, and the theater, agora, and acropolis can still be seen.

Beyond the Roman theater, to the left of the road, is the plinth that once held the Nereid Monument, an ionic temple with rich sculptural decoration (now displayed in the British Museum).

To the right of the road is the Hellenistic city gage. The city walls, considerable stretches of which are still visible, probably date from the 3rd century BCE.

Patara (70 kilometers south from Fethiye) is home to Turkey's longest beach, so it's the perfect spot for a sun and sand break.

This was also once an important city in the Lycian League, and the rambling ruins of Ancient Patara lay just behind the sand. Set off to explore them before cooling off in the sea.

Ancient Patara's ruins are entered through a Roman-era triple-arched gate near a well-restored bouleuterion, a colonnaded street, theater, and baths complex, as well as plenty of tombs.

The city was used right up to the Byzantine period, and a basilica can also be seen.

Patara's other claim to fame is it's also the birthplace of Saint Nicholas of Myra (modern Demre, near Kaş), the 4th century bishop who became 'Santa Claus'.

Perched high up amid the surrounding hill country, Tlos (35 kilometers east from Fethiye) is one of the Turquoise Coast's most interesting Lycian city ruins.

Mostly known for its glut of Lycian rock tombs chiseled into the rock face of the acropolis hill, Tlos also has an agora, necropolis, baths, restored theater, a Byzantine basilica, and the scattered ruins of houses and public buildings to explore.

The remnants of an Ottoman-era fortress also crown the acropolis hill showing that the Lycians weren't the only ones to appreciate a good mountain stronghold position. This fortress was used by various local brigands during Ottoman rule.

Usually visited as part of a Xanthos day trip, Letoön was the religious sanctuary for Xanthos and shares its UNESCO World Heritage status with the Xanthos ruins.

The religious sanctuary here was dedicated to the Greek goddess Leto who, according to local mythology, was banished to Lycia by Zeus' jealous wife Hera after an affair with the great Greek god.

There are three shrines here, one for Leto and one each for her twin children by Zeus, Apollo, and Artemis.

The site is incredibly atmospheric and a wonderful accompaniment to a visit to Xanthos, the ancient capital of Lycia. In particular, check out the well-preserved mosaic in the floor of the Temple of Apollo.

Letoön is 63 kilometers south of Fethiye and six kilometers south of Xanthos.

The Lycians ruled over this stretch of Turkey's coast from 200 BC, and Fethiye stands on the site of the important Lycian city of Telmessos. There are monuments scattered throughout the city, but the most famous is the rock-cut Tomb of Amyntas in the cliff face overlooking the city.

On Kaya Caddesi, as you walk up the hill towards the tomb, you can see Lycian sarcophagi along the way. More Lycian sarcophagi are also by the town hall in the city center.

When the Romans conquered Asia Minor, they allowed the independently minded Lycians self-rule, but that didn't stop them making their own mark on the Lycian cities.

Fethiye's small and only partially excavated theater, in the harbor area, was built in the 2nd century BCE, when Telmessos had become part of Rome's Asia Minor dominion. It would have originally seated 6,000 spectators.

Climb up to the top tier of seating for great views across town and over the sea beyond. The park opposite the theater is a good place to relax and seek some shade on a summer's day.

It may be small, but Fethiye Museum is an excellent place to get a grip on Lycian history, especially if you're planning to head on to attractions such as Xanthos, Tlos, and Letoön.

Plenty of information panels clearly explain the history, culture, and importance of Ancient Lycia and the exhibits, ranging from ceramics and jewelry to inscribed stele and statuary, are beautifully displayed.

The museum's most important artifact on display is the Trilingual Stele, which was unearthed during excavation work at Letoön.

The stele holds inscriptions in Lycian, ancient Greek, and Aramaic and so (just as with Egypt's Rosetta Stone) helped archaeologists finally solve the Lycian language.

In the hills south of Fethiye, the ruins of the Lycian city of Pınara are chiefly interesting for their honeycombed cliff of more than 900 rock tombs and monolithic house tombs. The site was so inaccessible that the tomb-builders had to be lowered on stages secured with ropes.

The mountain scenery that surrounds the ruins is lushly stunning, especially around the theater area, overlooked by snow-topped peaks and rimmed by verdant forest.

This is one of the quieter Lycian sites in the area and rarely gets busy with tourists.

Pınara is 33 kilometers southeast from Fethiye. If you hire a car, it would be easy to do a drive day trip to Pınara, Xanthos, and Letoön.

Luxury Hotels:

• The central Alesta Yacht Hotel has plenty of boutique hotel style and is within easy walking distance of all of Fethiye town's restaurants and sights. There's a rooftop pool overlooking the harbor, a restaurant, and spa, and breakfast is included.
• Jiva Beach Resort is an all-inclusive resort on the beach, out of town. It has a natural lagoon setting and a pool with waterslides, a Mediterranean restaurant, and a spa with a Turkish bath.

Mid-Range Hotels:

• Yacht Boheme Hotel is a boutique hotel with individually decorated rooms that exude bags of character. Breakfast is included, there's a good-sized pool, and the location by the harbor is excellent.
• Minu Hotel , right in Fethiye's bazaar area downtown, is a great choice if you want to be in the heart of town. Rooms are swish and modern, with balconies. Breakfast is included.

Budget Hotels:

• Harman Hotel has a quiet location close to the beach, out of the town center. There's a big pool area, a restaurant, and breakfast is included.

More Coastal Towns: Head south to Kas for coastal village ambience, kayaking tours, and boat trips and then on to Olympos for the ruins that tumble down to the sand. Fethiye is most famous for its strikingly beautiful Ölüdeniz beach, which attracts thousands of tourists every year both locally and internationally. However, this charming coastal city located in the southwest of Turkey is full of other gems to discover.

Get cultured at the Fethiye Museum

If you are a history enthusiast, you should visit Fethiye Museum that displays Trilingual Stele  dating back to 338 BC.

There are exhibits of statuary and votive stones like Stelae of Promise and Grave Stelae as well as pottery and jewelry. There is a mosaic featuring a floral center, a bow and arrow, and a lyre from Letoön’s Temple of Apollo.

This small museum has also a garden where you can see Roman tombstones and Lycian sarcophagi. Get your museum pass card ready! The museum can be visited between 9 AM and 5 PM.

Grab a bite at Yeşil Asma Yapraği

Tired of walking around? You can try Yeşil Asma Yaprağı restaurant, a “lokanta” favorite of locals. The menu concentrates on Turkish cuisine like roasted chicken, “sarma,” spinach “börek,” and meat casseroles.

The restaurant has air conditioning so that you can escape the hot weather for a while, especially important if you are visiting during summer. The restaurant is open between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM

Shop with locals at the Weekly Market

If you really want to get to know the culture of a city, you should definitely visit local weekly markets, and Fethiye is no exception.

Taking place along the canal next to the stadium every Tuesday, this enormous market offers vegetables, fruits, clothes, house equipment, food…everything you can think of. It is the cheapest way to shop, as well as the richest in its diversity of offerings.

Are you a Daniel Craig fan? Remember the scene James Bond was waking up in a cozy place by the sea in “Skyfall” with actress Berenice Marlohe? Well, the scene was shot in Çalış Beach!

The props were taken from Güven’s Bar and Restaurant while Daniel Craig stayed at the Yacht Classic Hotel on the beach – which, incidentally, is a fantastic place to stay when in Fethiye .

The Best Things to Do Around Fethiye

Visit the marvelous ölüdeniz beach.

Meaning “dead sea” in Turkish, Ölüdeniz is far away from being dead! Rather, it is full of life thanks to thousands of tourists coming to visit this heavenly blue sea.

Being one of the most famous beaches of Turkey, 15 kilometers of white soft sand lays rimmed by dense trees. The sea does not get deep quickly, therefore you can walk a lot till you can dive in the water completely.

That’s why families with kids also prefer the lagoon, which gives them a safe environment to play. The sand is so fine and thin — great for walking on the beach, but it also means that you take a lot of it home!

Jump from the peak of Baba Dağ

Ölüdeniz is also famous for paragliding! If you head to Baba Dağ, you can find paragliding facilities. Be careful to go with a reputable tour company! We recommend this paragliding company as they are the best-rated in Fethiye.

You might change your mind when you encounter the heights… so you can have a few drinks at Zirve Bar & Restaurant next to the takeoff area if you chicken out. You can watch people taking off every 5 minutes, and maybe you pluck up your courage to paraglide yourself (just don’t let it be liquid courage – it’s definitely not safe to fly while intoxicated!)

At this altitude, the air can get cold pretty quickly, especially as it gets closer to sunset. Don’t forget to take your coat with you in case you decide to hang out at the peak for more drinks to watch the stars sparkle overhead.

Walk around the abandoned village of Kayaköy

Once ancient Karmylassos, today’s Kayaköy is an eerie, mostly abandoned stone village located just 8 kilometers from Fethiye.

Until the 1923 Population Exchange was signed, this was a village full of Greeks and Turks living together. The law changed everything, making the people depart from the village to Greek islands and other parts of Turkey.

Today, this abandoned village attracts tourists who would like to see the ruins from that time, Katapongagia Church and Taxiarchis Church (two Greek churches) being some of them.

Visit the majestic ancient city of Kaunos

Dating back 3,000 years, the Ancient City of Kaunos has made to UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List with its rock tombs, temples, and theater. The ancient city is located in Dalyan, a one-hour car drive away from Fethiye city center.

If you are interested in the history of the region, Kaunos is a must-see, where merchant ships once departed to the Mediterranean and the Aegean Seas. To best experience Kaunos, take a boat ride by the Dalyan River in order to see the tombs with temple facades.

Take a mud bath

By the way, do not forget to take a mud bath on Iztuzu Beach! The mud is famous for healing skin ailments, and locals often come to the area to relax.

The gray mud dries on the skin, quickly working like a body mask to heal the irritated areas. It doesn’t smell that nice, just saying! The smell comes from the sulfur in the mud, which is part of what makes it so healing.

There are plenty of boat operators that work in Dalyan, therefore you don’t have to book in advance. Just be spontaneous!

Visit sea turtles

Iztuzu Beach is also home to the Sea Turtle Rescue Center (DEKAMER), a facility that helps injured turtles, as well as newborn sea turtles, reach the sea. You don’t have to pay anything to see the sea turtles in the conservation. Note that feeding and touching them are strictly forbidden.

Be careful with the season! Iztuzu Beach is a nesting site and closed from 8 PM to 8 AM during nesting months. If you’re visiting in the non nesting months (which vary by year), you can visit in the evening freely. The 5 kilometer-long beach is also fantastic during sunset time.

Take a safari tour at Saklıkent Gorge

The ravine is located in the mountains of Akdaglar and 30 kilometers away from the city center. The area is famous for trekking on the wooden boardwalks built above the river. The water is extremely cold, therefore do not consider swimming… unless you are from Russia or Sweden! You can go rafting, however, along the river.

There are safari tours starting from Saklıkent, a full-day activity diving into the deep forest areas, hiking through the gorge, having lunch by the river, and then heading to Patara to relax on the beach. The final destination of the safari tours is the ruins of Tlos. The tours include transfers from and to the hotel you are staying.

Check out the longest beach in all of Turkey

Being Turkey’s longest beach, Patara is the idyllic spot for a sunbathing break. Once a significant city of Lycia, you can also see several ruins by the beach in Patara, a perfect combination of history and seaside. Legend says that St. Nicholas of Myra who is “Santa Claus” as we call it today, was born in Patara in the 4th century!

The nearby archaeological site Pinara is less populated with tourists, compared to other Lycian sites in the region. There are more than 900 monolithic house tombs and rock tombs in the ruins of the Lycian city of Pinara. The area around the antique theater is fantastic, as you enjoy the mountain peaks and dense forest that surrounds you.

Visit the historic cities of Letoön and Xanthos

Letoön is another UNESCO protected city in the Fethiye region. The legend says that it was dedicated to the God Leto, who had an affair with Zeus. Leto was sent to exile to Lycia by Hera, Zeus’s wife. There are three temples in the religious center dedicated to Apollo, Artemis, and Leto.

You should also check out Apollo Temple in Xanthos, once the capital of Lycia, supposedly the oldest republic of the world. The city walls by the Hellenistic city gate date back to the 3rd century.

While under UNESCO heritage listing, unfortunately, the city’s most stunning monuments were sent to England in the 19th century. What remains are acropolis, the theater, and the agora.

Get some peace and quiet in the Butterfly Valley

Do you want to break free from all humanity? Then we have good news for you. Butterfly Valley is only reachable by boats that take off from Ölüdeniz or hiking from the cliffs of Faralya. Either way, it requires effort to get there… meaning tourists often don’t go there.

Going by boat from Ölüdeniz is the safer choice. We encourage you not to choose the trekking option unless you are an expert. There have been fatal incidents reported in the area due to losing concentration during hiking because of hot weather and the steep cliffs. Don’t forget to check out the schedule of the buses that will take you to the boats, as they are limited in number.

Once you are in the valley, you will find yourself surrounded by lush forest and spectacular beaches to discover. There are tree houses and humble accommodations here and there. Local and international visitors to Butterfly Valley make it a tradition to come here for the campfires at night, and the community spirit resembles the 60s hippie movement.

There are more than 85 different species of butterfly live in the valley, hence the name. The best time to see the butterflies is in June. If you really want to see the butterflies at rest, be careful not to be noisy and avoid crowded groups.

There is also a waterfall at the end of the valley. The road to the waterfall involves climbing, so get your water-resistant, well-tractioned shoes ready because you might slip with your flip-flops!

Spend the night in lovely Faralya

I have saved the best gem at the end of this article. A hidden hilltop village, Faralya is home to spectacular boutique hotels. Locals prefer these hotels for their honeymoon. Other people come to visit them for their yoga lessons that take place either by the Mediterranean or in the depths of the forest. You can only imagine how fresh the air is here!

Kabak Bay is a beautiful body of water that is under state protection is located just beneath Faralya. This is a valley of clean beaches and lavish nature with campsites. There are different kinds of animals and plants in the region. If you like camping, there is not a better camping atmosphere around! You don’t have to come ready with your own tent; there is equipment available for camping if you have a change of heart!

The locals of Faralya are really into bees and making organic honey. The honey here is a premium quality, so be sure to buy a few jars on the way back home!. If you are into cooking, you should also buy some sage. If you get a cold, you can consume in in the form of tea in winter, as well – it’s very good for you!

Since you are into the heart of the Aegean region, don’t leave before you have breakfast or dinner. The ingredients used are all organic and hence healthy. You can also buy olive oil produced from the local olive trees!

If you hike all the way up to Faralya, you have earned watching the sunset from the cliffs. Just take your time to relax, enjoy the views, and think about your life as you gaze into the hypnotic view of the Mediterranean!

What to Pack for Fethiye

The Lonely Planet Turkey :  a good guidebook can help you with the kinds of safety tips you need if you’re out in the city and feel a bit lost, especially if you don’t have internet or a cell signal. These also have specific neighborhood information that will help you in different parts of the city, and it’s a great supplement to blog posts like this one!

Unlocked Cell Phone:  Stephanie and I both have unlocked cell phones that we bought in Europe (Stephanie uses a  Samsung  and I use an  iPhone ). This allows up to get sim cards when we travel so that we always have the internet. This has gotten us out of so many jams! If you don’t have an unlocked cell phone that can use a Turkish sim card, you can buy a cheaper  unlocked phone online  and bring it with you!

Pacsafe Citysafe  or Other Anti-Theft Bag:  This is the bag both Stephanie and I use for all our travels. It has a pouch with RFID technology so our credit cards can’t get scanned from afar, interlocking zippers to make it harder to pickpocket, and it’s roomy enough to be a perfect sightseeing day bag, yet it’s still quite stylish for all of its security features. If you’d rather bring something smaller, you can pack a  money belt   instead. 

Grayl Water Filter :  While the water is *technically* safe to drink in much of Turkey, I would still avoid it. If you don’t want to be buying millions of plastic water bottles, you can get a reusable water bottle that comes with a water filter so that you can stick to the tap water and reduce your plastic waste. If you’ll be traveling outside of the major tourist centers, check if the water is potable locally.

Seabands:  If you get seasick easily, pack some Seabands or   seasickness pills  so you don’t miss out on the best parts of Turkey – being on the water! A trip to Turkey isn’t complete without a cruise or at least a quick boat trip, so make sure you’re prepared to enjoy it to the fullest!

Where Is Fethiye and What are the Best Things to do?

Fethiye is a city and district located in southwestern Turkey in a bay along the Turquoise Coast . This port city is situated on the site of ancient Lycian city of Telmessos and gained its modern day name of Fethiye under Ottoman rule.

Given its ocean-side location, the most popular activities in Fethiye involve relaxing on the beaches, exploring the islands and bays by boat and enjoying water-sports such as snorkelling and scuba diving. Fethiye old town is filled with Ottoman charm with ancient monuments such as Lycian sarcophagi scattered around the city. Further outside the town there are more ancient cities to explore which display remnants of the Lycian, Roman and Greek civilisations.

Those interested in picking up some local bargains should head to Fethiye market whilst adrenaline junkies should make a beeline to Babadağ, for a tandem paragliding flight over the regions prettiest location, the Blue Lagoon.

How to get to Fethiye

Fethiye is served by Dalaman Airport (DLM) which hosts domestic and international flights . It’s roughly a 45 minute drive from Dalaman to Fethiye. Regular buses are on hand to provide transport to the city or this can be pre-arranged by your accommodation.

The transport system in Turkey is amazing. There are buses that run between major cities and smaller dolmuş (minibuses) that link up to the towns and villages. You can pre-book bus tickets using Busbud from other major Turkish cities including Istanbul , Izmir, Antalya , Ankara and Göreme ( Cappadocia )

Car rental in Turkey is straightforward and very affordable. If you plan to visit many of the popular destinations outside of Fethiye, you may save money on transport through renting a car. Driving in Turkey can be a little different from driving in the UK or the States, so be sure to check out this guide to driving in Turkey first.

1. see the rock-cut tombs of amyntas.

Fethiye’s rock-cut tomb of Amyntas is a must-see for anyone visiting the region. This is a unique and fascinating relic of the Lycian civilisation, which flourished in this area over two thousand years ago. The tombs are located on the outskirts of the city, just a short walk from the old town. On the walk from the old town you will see sarcophagi dotted around the local neighboured, there’s even one in the middle of the road!

The tomb of Amyntas was initially built as a burial chamber for Lycian nobility and is carved directly into the rock face. The entrance to the main tomb is particularly impressive and is supported by four columns with intricate carvings adorning their capitals. Inside the tomb, you can still see many original decorations, including vibrant frescoes, inscriptions, and sculptures (along with plenty of local graffiti!). There is an entrance fee to access this tomb.

The tombs provide an insight into the lives of the Lycian people who once inhabited this land, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to appreciate some of the incredible architecture and artwork they left behind. Be sure to add this site to your list of things to do while in Fethiye!

2. Visit Fethiye Museum

Fethiye Museum is an excellent place to learn about the history of the area and the perfect place to visit before a trip to the nearby archaeological sites of Xanthos, Letoon and Tlos. Located near the old town, this small museum houses a wide range of artefacts and artwork dating back to the Bronze Age. Here you can find a variety of objects from all over Turkey, such as pottery, tools, coins, jewellery, and statues.  

The museum contains various artefacts from ancient civilisations, such as the Lycians and the Greeks, as well as from the Ottoman Empire. One of the most important artefacts is the Trilingual Stele. The inscriptions on this stone helped decipher the Lycian language and is comparable to Egypt’s Rosetta Stone. It is an ideal place for visitors interested in learning more about the region’s past.

3. Stroll the Old Town

Fethiye’s old town, Paspatur, is a great place to wander and explore. It’s full of character and history, making it a perfect spot to explore on foot. The narrow streets are lined with small shops, cute cafes, and restaurants, and the atmosphere is lively and bustling. 

You can also take in the sights of some of Fethiye’s historic houses and buildings, including the 18th century old mosque. After taking in all the sights, be sure to sample some of Fethiye’s local cuisine at one of the many eateries. If you want to dine on fresh fish, head to the fish market off Belediye Caddesi.

4. Take a Boat Trip from the Harbour

One of the best ways to experience Fethiye is to take a boat trip from the harbour. The stunning views and warm climate of the Mediterranean coast make for a truly memorable experience. You can either rent a private boat or join one of the many organised boat trips from the harbour.

You can explore some of the most picturesque islands and stop for lunch or a swim along the way. Remember to bring your camera as you’ll be able to capture some stunning pictures of the coast. 5. Relax one of Fethiye’s Beaches

Fethiye district is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the Mediterranean. For those who enjoy water-sports, pebbly Çalış Beach north of the old town, provides perfect conditions for windsurfing and kiteboarding. It doesn’t offer a particularly local experience since the promenade is lined with British bars and restaurants, however it is a great spot to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Oludeniz beach is arguably the most beautiful beach in Turkey, with its crystal clear turquoise waters and white sand. It is also home to the picture-perfect Blue Lagoon, which I talk about in more detail later. Local dolmuş (minbus) also serve popular beaches around the Fethiye Peninsula, including Help Beach and SeaMe Beach.

A little further away from the city is Patara beach which is another must-visit, as it has been declared a protected natural area and is one of the longest beaches in the country.

If you are looking for something more secluded and adventurous, head to Kabak Bay, located in a hidden corner of the Fethiye gulf, further along the road from Butterfly Valley Lookout Point. Here you can find an isolated spot to enjoy the sun and tranquil surroundings. 

6. Walk Umbrella Street

One of the most popular spots in Fethiye is Umbrella Street, a narrow pedestrian street in the old town. It’s filled with colourful umbrellas that hang from the roof along the length of the street. This vibrant area is a must-see for anyone visiting Fethiye and is especially popular for its photogenic setting.

Umbrella Street is home to many small boutiques and cafes, where you can find unique souvenirs and refreshments. There are plenty of places to sit and relax away from the heat of the sun or take some photos of the charming umbrellas.

If you’re looking for delicious local food, try one of the many restaurants and cafes that line the street. You can even find traditional Ottoman-style cafes in this area, which are great for experiencing the city’s culture and history.

7. Ignite Your Senses at the Fethiye Market

The Fethiye market is a great place to buy local produce, handicrafts and souvenirs. Located on the riverbank that runs along the central streets of Fethiye, this open-air market is the largest in the Fethiye region. Whether you’re looking for spices, fruits, vegetables, clothes or souvenirs, you’ll find them at the Fethiye market.

This market is a vibrant place full of colour and life. You’ll find vendors selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to homemade cheeses and locally picked olives. There is also a selection of textiles, bags and ceramics and is an ideal place to pick up a unique gift or souvenir to take home with you.

Fethiye’s main market day is Tuesday and this is a great opportunity to haggle with the locals. (Don’t worry, haggling is expected!) Also, be sure to try some classic Turkish street food such as simit, Gozleme or the classic doner kebab.

8. Visit Ölüdeniz  

One of the most popular Fethiye attractions is the stunning Ölüdeniz lagoon, located 15km south of the city. Attached to a long stretch of white sand beach, the lagoon’s turquoise-blue waters are sheltered by the Mediterranean Sea’s currents, making it a popular spot for swimming, boating, and snorkelling.

The other main activity to enjoy in Ölüdeniz is a tandem paraglide from Babadağ, the mountain which towers over the town. The paragliding flights launch from nearly 2000m, making it one of the highest commercial take-off sites in the world and the flight time lasts around 30-45 minutes.

9. Hike a Section of the Lycian Way

The Lycian Way is a hiking trail that stretches across the Mediterranean coastline of Turkey. It is considered one of the most beautiful and challenging hikes in the world, with stunning views of the Aegean Sea and surrounding mountains.

I’ve walked several sections of the Lycian Way over the years and it always wows me with the views on offer. I can definitely recommend walking sections near the pretty seaside town of Kas and further along towards Demre .

The trail starts near Ölüdeniz and goes all the way to Antalya, spanning 540 km of stunning scenery. You’ll find beautiful beaches, hidden coves, and charming villages along the way. You can even take a break to explore some ancient ruins.

The easiest way to get to the start of the Lycian Way is through taking a taxi. They’ll be happy to wait or you can call them to pick you up once you’re finished. The start of the trail is a gradual climb and after 30 minutes offers some of the best views of Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon. Perfect for those not wanting to take the paragliding leap off Mt Baba.

The trail is best avoided in the hot summer months and is, instead, better suited to the cooler months of spring and fall. In the fall the ocean is the warmest after heating up all summer, so is perfect for enjoying swims in the glorious turquoise waters.

10. Explore Xanthos

Xanthos is an ancient Lycian city located in the Fethiye district of Turkey, around 1 hour from the city. It was the capital city of the Lycian civilisation and has many remarkably well-preserved ruins, including an agora, a theatre and a colonnaded street which still has grooves left by Roman chariots.

The Xanthian Obelisk found close to the theatre, is a huge pilar covered with the longest Lycian inscription known to exist. I was fascinated by this pilar and spent a long time studying the unique Lycian scripture!

Another notable structure on the site is the Xanthos Necropolis. This is a complex of tombs with intricate designs, some dating back to 500 BC. Visitors can explore the necropolis and find out more about Lycian culture and architecture.

11. Visit Letoon

Letoon is an ancient city located 65km from Fethiye. It was the religious centre of the Lycian civilisation and is now a popular tourist destination. Letoon consists of three temples dedicated to the Lycian gods, Leto, Artemis and Apollo. The site is a mix of Hellenistic and Lycian architecture, and you can explore the ruins of the city, including tombs and courtyards, as well as the main temples.

The most famous temple is dedicated to Leto, the mother of the twins Artemis and Apollo. It contains an altar, an odeon, and a podium with carved reliefs depicting scenes from Greek mythology. Other highlights include a sacred spring, where sacrifices were once made, and a small but intact theatre.

Letoon is great to combine with a visit of nearby Xanthos. Here’s a short video of our trip to Letoon where we had the whole site to ourselves.

12. Wander Kayaköy Ghost Town

Kayaköy is a picturesque abandoned village just outside of Fethiye. Initially founded by Greeks in the 1700s, the village was largely abandoned during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the early 20th century. Now, all that remains are several hundred crumbling stone houses and several churches.

The site has been designated as a protected area due to its historical and cultural significance, and is possible to visit and explore. Although the village is no longer inhabited, visitors will get an insight into how life used to be here. The area also offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

There is a small entrance fee to visit this sprawling site which is set onto the hillside. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes to explore this ghost town and avoid visiting during the hottest part of the day. Signposts guide you along the narrow cobbled streets.

13. Visit the Ancient City of Tlos

Nestled on a rocky plateau in the Taurus Mountains, the ancient city of Tlos is a must-visit destination if you’re exploring the region of Fethiye. This 5th-century BC city was one of the oldest settlements in Lycia and has a complex history of rule spanning thousands of years. 

This site is split across several areas with a road passing between them, however there is only one portion open to the public which is accessed via the ticket gate. At Tlos, you will find the remains of a Hellenistic gate, a theatre, a bath complex and many tombs. As you explore the site, you will encounter several historical monuments, such as an acropolis and a castle.

Climb to the top of the Ottoman era citadel and take some time to soak up the incredible views of the surrounding countryside. Be sure to look out for the Lycian rock tombs on the cliffs near the ticket office and the stunning mosaic floors at the ancient Roman stadium. This is another ancient site we had all to ourselves.

Tlos is 37km from Fethiye so consider renting a car or joining a guided tour like this one .

14. Enjoy Beautiful Butterfly Valley

Butterfly Valley is a secluded cove with a white sandy beach backed by a valley of lush vegetation and surrounded by steep cliff faces. It’s one of Turkey’s true paradises and even though it’s no longer a hidden gem , it’s still a destination to add to your Fethiye bucket list.

The easiest and most popular way to visit Butterfly Valley is via a boat trip. Shuttle boat taxis run every day from Oludeniz through the summer which have designated drop off and pick up times. Alternatively, join a guided boat tour which often includes a visit to St Nicholas’s Island. If you’re looking for a party, join one of the infamous pirate ship cruises.

15. Get Wet at Saklikent Gorge

One of the most fun things to do in Fethiye is to explore Saklikent gorge. Located in the foothills of the Akdağlar Mountains, the gorge is a spectacular site to behold and a great way to get out and enjoy the natural beauty of Turkey.  

The gorge is one of the world’s deepest canyons, with its walls towering up to 300 meters in places. The best way to explore it is by taking a guided tour, which usually starts at the canyon’s entrance and takes you along the shallow river. As you make your way up through the river, you’ll marvel at the gorge’s sheer size and beauty, with its towering walls, lush vegetation and crystal-clear water, culminating at a beautiful waterfall.

At the beginning of the gorge it is also possible to enjoy some tubing or to simply jump in and enjoy a swim. The shady canyon is a great place to cool off on hot summer days and after you’ve finished you can enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants located near the entrance. 

If you have your own transport you can drive to the gorge, otherwise consider joining a tour. Bring water shoes to help navigate the slippery rocks.

16. Relax at Patara

Patara is an ancient city located around 1 hour from Fethiye, Turkey. It was once a major port in the Lycian region and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Patara is one of the most important archaeological sites in Turkey and has a wealth of history and culture to explore.

When visiting Patara, you can explore the ruins of the ancient city, including the remains of a bath complex, theatre and a restored council chamber where Lycian leaders met to debate important matters of the region.  

The city sits behind the sand dunes of Patara beach, which is home to the longest stretch of sand in all of Turkey. On the beach there are plenty of restaurants to buy food and drinks and sun loungers for hire.

17. Go Scuba Diving

The waters around the Turquoise Coast are notoriously clear which means the visibility for scuba diving is second to none. If you want to explore what lies beneath the water then opt for a scuba diving trip. Scuba diving tours from Fethiye are available for beginner and seasoned divers alike, with tuition, skills tests and practice dives to get you up to speed.

This is a great way to have an underwater adventure in Fethiye.

Accommodation in Fethiye

To experience the real charm of Fethiye I recommend staying in or around the old town. This also makes visiting most of places on this list easy to do. If you’re looking predominantly for a beach vacation then I recommend staying near to your beach of choice.

The Best Time to Visit Fethiye

Fethiye has a Mediterranean climate, meaning the summers are dry and hot and the winters are wet and mild. If you’re looking for a summer vacation to enjoy the beaches and warm waters, then the best time to visit is between June and September. These are the peak months around the Turquoise Coast where prices are at their highest and crowds at their biggest.

The spring months of April to June and the fall months of September to November are a little cooler and attractions less busy. In the fall months ocean waters are still warm and this is my favourite time to visit Fethiye.

During the winter, Fethiye is at its quietest but not everything is open. For example, Saklikent Gorge is closed due to high water levels and popular boat trips such as those to Butterfly Valley don’t operate. Archeological sites are open year round and if the weather is right, paragliding flights still run. On our most recent trip we visited the archaeological sites around Fethiye in January and we had the cities all to ourselves.

Turkey’s Turquoise Coast is a prime sun-and-sea area, so it’s no surprise that this is where you’ll find Fethiye.

While you could while an entire week in this small resort town strolling around the Old Town and lounging on the beach, this 2-day itinerary for Fethiye will allow you to see all the highlights of this Turkish paradise.

Fethiye, Turkey is on Turkey’s southwest coast around 200 km west of Antalya on the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.

It is a port city with a beautiful natural harbour, a long stretch of beach, blue waters, and a long, varied history with ruins and caves dating back to the 4th century BC. There are many things to do in Fethiye, Turkey no matter what kind of trip you take want.

This part of Turkey has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. The best time to visit Fethiye for the hottest weather is June to September when temperatures often climb to 35°C (around 95°F). This is also Fethiye’s busiest and most expensive season. 

May and October are the shoulder seasons with warm weather and cheaper prices. Avoid visiting in the winter months as Fethiye is a resort town and many restaurants and attractions will be closed.

Day 1 in Fethiye

Start your 48 hrs in Fethiye with breakfast at Kamkat Cafe , a relaxed restaurant near Fethiye’s Çalış Beach.

They have a covered outdoor terrace and serve a range of local Turkish and Mediterranean dishes as well as more classic breakfast dishes (bread, preserves, pastries, etc.) that you might be more used to back home.

Lake Koycegiz is 100 km up the coast from Fethiye but it’s totally worth travelling the distance. Plus, there are other things to do in this area that make the journey worthwhile.

Lake Koyegiz isn’t just a beautiful lake, but it also has natural mug baths, a sandy lake-side beach and beautiful views of the surrounding area.

You could also take a boat ride on the lake or simply stroll around the promenade if you don’t feel like getting wet (or getting muddy).

There are many great beaches in Fethiye but some are better than others. While Fethiye’s local beach Çalış is long and sandy with great waters for swimming in, Iztuzu Beach has something that it doesn’t: loggerhead turtles! Plus, it’s just a short distance away from Kale Koycegiz.

These turtles lay their eggs from May to October and access to the beach is usually prohibited during the night at this time to protect the eggs. Hatching season is from November to April. 

While you’re at Iztuzu Beach, stay for lunch at the local beachside restaurant . It’s a relaxed seafood eatery with excellent reviews. You can either consume your catch in the restaurant or get your food to take away and eat on the beach.

Head back to Fethiye and discover one of the most important historical ruins in the town. The Anyntas Rock Tombs of Fethiye are similar to the Lycian Rock Tombs of Myra which are much further down the coast. 

These rock tombs are much closer to Fethiye as they literally overlook the harbour so they’re in a much more convenient location at the end of the Fethiye Kordon hiking trail. Or you can take this day tour to see Anyntas Rock Tombs .

They are the remains of the Greek ancient city of Telmessos dating back to the 4th century BC. Like Petra in Jordan, they are hewn into the cliff face.

They are one of the ancient architectural wonders of Turkey and are well worth visiting up close. Not to mention the view of Fethiye from where the rock tombs are is spectacular.

Back in Fethiye, enjoy eating dinner at Middoor . It’s located right on the beach and has a relaxed, covered outdoor terrace overlooking the coastline. They serve a mix of local Turkish dishes and seafood.

Fethiye is a beach town that really comes alive at night. Take the opportunity on the first night of your 2-day itinerary for Fethiye to get lost in the winding cobbled streets of the Old Town. Stop by Fethiye Market to see if you can source any cool, local items or souvenirs to take home with you. 

Instead of eating right on the beach for breakfast on your second day in Fethiye, head into the heart of the Old Town and stop by Gogo The Eatery . This café has a cool vibe and serves artisanal coffee with western breakfasts like eggs benedict. They have a beautiful, upmarket outdoor terrace too. 

Yesterday you explored the coastline west of Fethiye, today it’s time to explore the cool spots along the eastern coast. The first stop on your itinerary will be the ghost town of Kayakoy . 

Kayakoy was first inhabited during the time of the Ancient Greeks and remained inhabited until the 20th century during the Greco-Turkish War. All Greek Orthodox residents (which was most, if not all of them) were exiled and therefore left the village abandoned.

It’s an incredible sight to see so many old houses left completely empty and it’s a must-see when staying in Fethiye.

After visiting Kayakoy, head further down the coast to the Oludeniz Blue Lagoon. Unlike the Blue Lagoon in Iceland , this is simply an area of coastline near Oludeniz that is an incredibly vibrant and vivid blue.

Part of the coastline is almost totally enclosed due to the shape of the beaches so this part, especially, is Oludeniz’s Blue Lagoon.

You can swim in it as the whole coastline is very clean and calm or you can just admire how blue and beautiful it looks! Visiting in summer is key because only then will you see the vibrancy of the water.

Before leaving the area, enjoy lunch at INCI Restaurant on Oludeniz Beach which is also near the Blue Lagoon. It’s in an easy-to-reach location and serves standard western food alongside seafood stews and Turkish dishes. It’s relaxed and the view is lovely.

There are several ways to reach the Butterfly Valley nature reserve, but the easiest is to take a ferry or water taxi from Olundeniz as it’s right on the coast. Otherwise, you’d have a long, arduous hike as there are no main roads that access this largely untouched area! Another option is joining this tour .

Hiking through Butterfly Valley will allow you to be completely surrounded by over 100 species of rare and diverse butterflies. Some of the rare species are the orange, black, and white Jersey Tiger varieties.

In total, the Butterfly valley is around 86,000 sqm. You’ll only be able to see a small fraction of that on your trip but you won’t regret making the effort.

Finish your 48 hours in Fethiye with a bang by braving one of the most popular adrenaline-inducing activities in the area: paragliding! It’s the best way to truly appreciate the vivid blues of the Blue Lagoon and the stunning Fethiye coastline. 

There are lots of tandem paragliding companies by the beach so you’ll have no problems finding one with availability and great reviews.

Take the ferry back to Olundeniz and dine at The PineHill A La Carte Restaurant . It’s a beautiful stone building that serves Mediterranean food and has a great wine selection.

No Fethiye itinerary is complete without taking a tour, half-day, or full-day trip to somewhere in the local area.

There are just too many awesome things to see and experience! One of the top activities for travellers to do outside of Fethiye is to paraglide over Olundeniz .

The harbours, the nature reserves, the beaches… It’s just such a beautiful place! The weather allows for paragliding almost year-round and it’s much cheaper to paraglide here than in many other places around the world.

River Cruise and Dalyan Mud Baths

There are lots of natural wonders around Fethiye and this tour combines many of them. You can take a cruise up the River Ortaca, visit Turtle Beach (its official name is Iztuzu) and explore the Dalyan Coast. 

This tour also includes a visit to Köyceğiz Lake and the Lycian tombs so if you’re short on time you’ll be able to many of the wider Fethiye area’s highlights in one go with a knowledgeable, local guide on hand to explain a lot of the local history too.

Scuba Diving Experience

Fethiye’s calm, clear turquoise waters (it is the Turquoise Coast, after all) make this a fantastic place for a diving experience if you’re a scuba diving newbie and want to try it out. This half-day tour will give you the perfect taster.

You’ll explore coral reefs, submerged caves, and lots of colourful fish on this at least two epic dives. Safety is paramount and lunch is also included.

Day Trip to Saklikent National Park

Turkey has 45 national parks and Saklikent National Park is only 45 km/28 miles or a 50-minute drive from Fethiye. It’s the perfect place for a half-day or full-day tour!

You can hike up the deep river Saklikent Gorge and visit the ancient Lycian city of Tlos near the national park.

How many days do you need in fethiye.

When deciding how many days in Fethiye you want to spend, you need to know what kind of trip you want. If you want a relaxing beach break, you might want to stay for a week. 

However, if you’re looking for a fun coastal city break or are visiting Fethiye as part of a backpacking trip, you only need two full days in Fethiye. There are plenty of tours and excursions you can take around the local area if you’re spending three or four days, though.

Is it worth going to Fethiye?

It is absolutely worth going to Fethiye! Fethiye has so many historical and natural wonders that it offers something for all types of travellers. Plus, Fethiye is a cheaper alternative to other Turkish resort towns like Antalya.

Is it better to stay in Fethiye or Oludeniz?

Oludeniz is another small, coastal resort town in Turkey only 20 km/12.5 miles along the coast from Fethiye, which is only a 20-minute drive. Oludeniz is a more typical touristy beach resort town with more people, high-rise resort hotels and a busier beach. If you prefer a more typical beach resort town, Oludeniz.

However, most travellers would probably prefer staying in Fethiye. It’s less touristy but still has all the amenities you need and lots of gorgeous resorts and accommodation options to choose from. Plus, you can easily take a day trip to Oludeniz so by staying in Fethiye you will get to explore both Fethiye and Oludeniz.

In a nutshell, it’s better to stay in Fethiye than in Oludeniz!

Fethiye Old Town

Fethiye Old Town is the beating heart of Fethiye. It has a labyrinth of narrow streets filled with market stalls, shops, bars, restaurants, and even Turkish baths. At any time of the day, the old town is an eclectic mix of tourists and locals. However, on an evening, it really comes alive. Unlike some of Turkey’s tourist towns, we found Fethiye Old Town to be rich with culture and tradition.

It’s a great place to buy handmade clothes, bakery sweet treats, spices, house decorations and other wares that Turkey is famous for. Explore the old town during the day and then on an evening for a completely different experience. We recommend heading straight to the central market and then exploring the streets that lead off it.

Amyntas Rock Tomb / The Ancient City of Telmessos

If you look closely at the Fethiye town skyline from the harbour area, you’ll see stacks of ancient rock tombs carved into the north-facing side of the mountain. There are a lot of these tombs cascading across Fethiye’s mountains, with Amyntas Rock Tomb being the most famous. The intricate structure dates back to the 4 th century BC and depicts an Ionian-style temple.

You can visit Amyntas Rock Tomb via a short walk from Fethiye Town centre. On arrival, take time to look up and marvel at the many tombs, then climb up the stairs for a closer look at Amyntas. This  captivating structure has one of the best views of the town. Additionally, the wider historical area is known as The Ancient City of Telmessos and is well worth exploring on foot. It holds some of Fethiye’s oldest buildings.

Fethiye Promenade

If you’re like us and love a long walk with scenic views on an evening, the promenade is one of the best places to visit in Fethiye. Starting at Fethiye harbour and stretching all the way to Calis Beach, it’s a beautiful area of town that comes alive on an evening. Tour boats dock at one side of the promenade, with views of the calm bay as a backdrop. You then have an endless selection of water-view restaurants and bars.

Fethiye promenade is pedestrianised so you can enjoy a leisurely stroll before or after dinner. We personally enjoyed ordering an ice cream from one of the promenade vendors for a post-dinner treat.

Calis Beach

The main town centre of Fethiye doesn’t have a beach. Therefore, many people visiting for a relaxing beach holiday choose to stay in the area known as Calis Beach, a short drive from Fethiye’s Old Town and harbour area. As a typical Turkish tourist resort, it has plenty of facilities, shops and restaurants for beach lovers.

Calis Beach lacks the cultural appeal of other areas of Fethiye but it’s still worth visiting for its long stretch of white sands. We highly recommend catching the water taxi over from Fethiye harbour for a scenic arrival. You can then go for a long walk on the Calis promenade, relax on the beach or enjoy a drink in a sea-view café.

The Fethiye Beach Clubs

In addition to Calis Beach, Fethiye has a number of small beach coves spread out around the peninsula. Some are only reachable by boat; others are home to some excellent beach clubs. Help, Hillside and Sea Me are just a small selection of some of the best beach clubs to check out in the area.

Unlike public beaches, which can get pretty crowded, beach clubs are privately owned venues where you have to reserve a sun lounger for access. Capacity is limited, so they never feel too busy. Spend the day relaxing on the beach, bathing in the sun or grabbing a bite to eat or drink. We personally recommend Help Beach Club. It’s only a 10-minute drive by taxi from Fethiye marina and the bohemian design makes it an idyllic beach retreat. It has more of a relaxed vibe over an upbeat party atmosphere.

The abandoned city of Kayakoy, also known as a ‘ghost town’ due to its eerie, abandoned buildings, is only a 15-minute drive from the centre of Fethiye. The town was founded by the Greeks in the 18 th -century and was formerly known as Levissi. After the Greeks were forced to leave town in 1923 as a result of the Greece-Turkey ‘population exchange’, the town was occupied by Macedonians and was renamed to Kayakoy. The new inhabitants didn’t like the town and it was then abandoned again, sitting as a ‘ghost town’ ever since.

As one of the world’s top 10 ghost towns according to National Geographic, it’s well worth stopping by to explore the decaying ruins. Rows upon rows of old house ruins sit on the side of the mountain, and you can climb to the top of the hill for amazing views of Kayakoy below. There’s something very cool about exploring such a large area that has been completely abandoned! The open-air museum is home to over 500 buildings, including an impressive Gothic-style church.

Oludeniz Town, Beach and Lagoon

The widely known tourist town of Oludeniz is famous worldwide as being one of the best places to paraglide. On less windy days, waves of paragliders descend on the town after taking off from the huge Babadag Mountain above. It’s a popular place to stay on the Turquoise Coast, but it makes a great daytrip too.

Venture into Oludeniz Town for scenic sea-views from the promenade and plenty of café, restaurant and shopping options. Afternoons are best spent on the long and sandy Oludeniz Beach, or if you really want to see something cool, walk further along the promenade to Oludeniz Lagoon. Often crowded with tourists but still breathtakingly beautiful, the lagoon is an idyllic place to relax. Go for a swim in the shallow waters or hire a sun lounger and kick back on the pebble beach.

Oludeniz Lagoon is no doubt one of the best places to visit in Fethiye.

Paragliding from Babadag Mountain

Speaking of paragliding, if you’re a keen adventurer and want to take part in something exhilarating, this is a must. Amateur and pro paragliders flock from across the planet to experience the scenic views of Oludeniz Bay from the sky. Paragliding experiences can be booked with one of the many companies in Oludeniz Town.

Once you book, you’ll then be driven to the top of Babadag Mountain. This is where you’ll be strapped in tandem to a paragliding instructor. Your paragliding journey will then begin with a short run and jump of the side of the mountain runway, where you’ll proceed to glide, twist and turn in the sky, descending slowly to the beach town below. The scenery you’ll see on the way down is stunning!

Fethiye Marina

Fethiye Marina is one of the best places to visit in Fethiye on an evening. From the yacht marina by the south-west of the bay, to the long promenade lined with tourist and fishing boats, it’s a great place to go for an evening walk. It’s also one of the best places to eat! Choose a restaurant with a sunset view and enjoy a the traditional Turkish meal of your choice. We personally recommend the upmarket Mori Restaurant . After dinner, take a long walk along the promenade and enjoy one of the many Turkish dessert treats from the street vendors.

If you visit the Fethiye Marina area first thing on a morning, you may even see one of the giant sea turtles feeding in the bay. We were amazed to stumble across these guys on our first day in Fethiye!

Tlos Ancient Ruins

Out of all of the amazing ancient ruins sites we visited in and around Fethiye, we found Tlos to be the most impressive. It’s said to be one of the most important religious sites for the Lycians, with areas of Tlos dating back 4000 years. The hilltop location and beautiful valley scenery sets the scene for a true piece of ancient history.

Tlos sits on the mountainside, with intricate tombs carved into the side of the rock face, and a grand citadel at the top of the hill climb. You can explore the ruins on foot, hiking up to the top for scenic views and then venturing to the lower depths of Tlos to see the Roman amphitheatre and remnants of one of the most important Lycian cities. As Tlos is located a 15-minute drive from the next attraction on our list, Saklikent Gorge, we recommend exploring both areas in one day.

Saklikent Gorge

Currently rated as the number one best thing to do in Fethiye on Tripadvisor, Saklikent Gorge is located around 50km from Fethiye, deep into the Turkish wilderness. Saklikent, which means ‘hidden city’ in Turkish, is one of the deepest gorges in the world. It’s open to visitors that want to trek through the gorge by themselves, or join a guided tour that ventures deep past the touristic area of the gorge.

Wade through the stream, clamber over boulders and experience Turkey nature at its best. Saklikent is one of the best places to visit in Fethiye for those that love adventure. It also suits those will all levels of hiking experience. Our key recommendation is to bring a sturdy pair of water shoes as the rocks will hurt bare feet.

Butterfly Valley

The appropriately named Butterfly Valley is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Fethiye. It’s a small cove with a beach, which is surrounded by a towering cliffside. Butterflies flutter around as you relax on the beach and can also be seen at the top of the Butterfly Valley viewpoint.

There are two main ways to see Butterfly Valley. This first is an organised boat trip from the nearby town of Oludeniz. The trip usually involves a couple of other cove stops, a freshly cooked lunch on the boat and some time to relax on the beach.

The second, and our preferred option is to drive to the top of the Butterfly Valley viewpoint for the best views of the valley. You can then choose to admire the view from afar or take the challenging climb down to the beach.

The Lycian Way hike

The Lycian Way is an epic, 500km+ hiking route that stretches from Fethiye, all the way to Antalya. Whilst the full route will take you many days to complete in full, you can sample a small section of the trail in Fethiye. Beaches, mountains, ancient ruins and some amazing viewpoints of the Turquoise Coast can all be seen on a short trek.

Complete 2 hours, 3, 4, or a full day if you’d like. The Lycian Way is a hiking route that appeals to all levels of experience. We recommend embarking on the hike first thing on a morning whilst the temperatures aren’t too high.

Explore the coves of Fethiye by boat

As a popular yachting destination, Fethiye marina and harbour have countless boat excursions on offer. What way better way to explore the stunning Turquoise Coast of Turkey? The peninsula around Fethiye has some excellent beaches, coves and snorkelling spots. If you’re lucky, you might even see the giant sea turtles that make region their home.

We personally recommend booking a full day boat trip with Rastapus Tours . Most tours offer similar itineraries, exploring the nearby coves, with snorkelling spots and a lunch feast onboard. If you want a more luxurious Fethiye boat adventure, why not charter a private yacht for the day?

Discover the ancient ruins of Xanthos and Letoon

The ruin-filled sites of Xanthos and Letoon are some of the best places to visit in Fethiye for those that want to sample more ancient Lycian history. Letoon was an important sanctuary for the Lycian people, dedicated to the three national deities of Lycia, Leto and her children Artemis and Apollo. It has a number of temple ruins, which were built in homage to the family. It also features an impressive amphitheatre and host of other building remnants.

A 10-minute drive down the road from Letoon is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Xanthos. It was the centre of culture and commerce for the Lycian, later conquered and occupied by the Persians, Greeks and Romans. The site has equally as impressive structures as Letoon. You’ll see a grand theatre, traditional Lycian standing tomb, and other ruins that span the history of its many conquerors.

Along with Tlos and Patara Ancient City, these form the best ancient ruins to explore whilst in Fethiye.

Visit Patara Ancient City, sand dunes and beach

According to Greek mythology, the Ancient City of Patara was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. It has a history that dates back to being conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 BC, onward to the Roman and Byzantine Empires. The ruins at Patara were discovered in the 18 th century and a significant portion has been uncovered and restored. However, as the area is so vast, there’s still a lot of ruins that are yet to be excavated.

Once you’ve paid entry to the Patara Ancient City, you can explore the many ruins at your leisure. A  Roman Triumphal Arch, ancient necropolis, a selection of temples, the Patara city gate, a lighthouse, an amphitheatre, churches, bath houses and many more sites are all to be explored. Any lover of history will be impressed after spending time here.

In addition to the ancient ruins, Patara is home to the longest beach in Turkey. Spanning a length of 18 kilometres, the beach is a protected area and nesting ground for sea turtles. Tourists occupy the soft white sands on one section of the beach in the busy summer months. However, much of the beach is completely empty and free to explore.

Before heading to the beach to relax, be sure to stop at the vast array of rolling sand dunes for some breath taking viewpoints.

Pro-tip: Letoon, Xanthos and the attractions of Patara are all located within a short drive of each other. Therefore, we recommend planning a visit to all destinations in one full day trip.

Wander around Sehit Fethi Beyp Park

Sehit Fethi Bey Park isn’t just any park; it’s one of the best parks you’ll ever experience, seriously! Neatly manicured gardens overlook the seaside promenade, showcasing statues, artwork, a fitness track, ponds and a number of cool adventure attractions. Many tourists miss this park off their itinerary, but it’s well worth exploring, especially if you have children.

Go for a long walk in Sehit Fethi Beyp to experience its tranquil scenery. Enjoy a picnic on a park bench or marvel at the interesting artwork. There’s something unusually different at every corner, so make sure you explore the park in its entirety. It’s located just south of Calis Beach and 30-minute walk from Fethiye town centre.

I’ve stayed around here on a few fortnight holidays, May and September. It’s absolutely wonderful,and with a week’s car hire have visited all the sites mentioned. This guide is superb and nicely covers everything. Never been in the busy season, but May and September are lovely and hot enough. I’m going back next week for my honeymoon,and can’t wait.

Fethiye was once known as the ancient city of “Telmessos”, one of the most important cities of the Lycian civilization. Telmessos was a culturally rich and flourishing city, and is home to a number of ruins that still stand today. It is located in the Aegean region in southwestern Turkey, about 4 hours south of Izmir and 3 hours west of Antalya.

Located on the southwest coast of Turkey, Fethiye is a wonderful blend of ancient and modern. Modern Mediterranean-style villas, ancient historical sites, majestic mountains, white sand beaches and turquoise waters will please everyone, from history lovers to sea and island enthusiasts, exciting activities.

Fethiye is the treasure trove of the Mediterranean coast. It is located close to popular tourist attractions such as the golden Ephesus ruins of the once Roman empire and the cotton castle of Pamukkale. Especially from Fethiye you can start to traveling around Turkey to explore all the beautiful places of this country. Or you can choose a short boat trip to Olympos, Rhodes, Blue Cave… Fethiye was once voted as the best tourist destination in the world by The Times and The Guardian in 2007.

With stunning lagoons, hidden caves and pine-fringed mountains, a stay in Fethiye promises to be full of heavenly sights. Located on the southwest coast of Turkey in the province of Muğla, this district is a wonderful blend of old and new. Fethiye is a destination that tourists often visit in spring, summer and autumn. Temperatures usually stay below 15 degrees Celsius between November and January, however the area receives about 300 days of sunshine a year, so you can count on great weather during the warm months. best. Summer is the busiest time to visit when the average daily temperature can reach 28 degrees Celsius. For a more peaceful and less stuffy experience consider visiting in May, June, September or October when attractions are quieter and average daytime temperatures stay below 25 degrees Celsius.

From June to August is the peak season in Fethiye, very crowded with tourists. April, May and September are the best times to come, the weather is perfect – warm and sunny, but not humid and not stuffy. Prices of hotels, resorts, tours also cooled down.

Getting to Fethiye (#fethiye travel guide)

From Vietnam you will have to fly to the Turkish capital city of Istanbul and from Istanbul you can fly domestically, take a bus or drive yourself to Fethiye.

The closest airport to Fethiye is in Dalaman Airport (IATA: DLM, ICAO: LTBS) and it takes about 45 minutes from Dalaman to Fethiye. You can also fly to Izmir or Antalya first, visit these two cities and then take a bus or drive to Fethiye. Turkish domestic airlines such as Pegasus, Turkish Airlines, domestic buses have Kamil Koc, MetroTurizm. Flight and bus fares range from USD 35-70 depending on whether you can book promotional tickets or not and depend on the specific time.

Getting around Fethiye (#fethiye tourist guide)

The best way to visit Fethiye is to rent a car, you can drive yourself (you just need to bring your driver’s license converted to an international license to rent a car) or rent a car with a driver if you are traveling in a large group. Parking is available (paid and free) at most attractions and it is very flexible when you move to places outside of Fethiye. If you go alone, there is a public bus, but it will take more time to travel.

Where to go and what to do in Fethiye

Explore the old town of fethiye (fethiye blog).

The old towns are always the best areas to explore. Fethiye Old Town is a cute little shopping district that includes umbrella street and the famous fish market where you pick your fish and a restaurant at the market to prepare it and it’s the perfect place to have dinner in town!

The old town of Fethiye (also known as Paspatur) sits at the end of a cliff-lined bay with Lycian tombs and is truly great for dining. There is also a market for local handicrafts which is quite nice.

Le Kordon is actually a promenade running along the sea from the old town near to Calis beach. It’s great for walking around or sipping a drink in the late afternoon when the sun goes down.

Rock-cut tombs in Kaunos

Kaunian rock-cut tombs is located in Dalyan, about an hour by car from Fethiye. The Ancient City of Kaunos is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and dates back more than 3,000 years with rock tombs, theaters and temples. The port city once held a particularly important strategic location for merchant ships traveling between the Mediterranean and the Aegean Seas. It is one of the best places to visit when travel to Fethiye if you are interested in the history of the region.

Rock-cut tombs with temple-like facades on the cliff edges are seen only in Kaunos, and are surrounded by the beautiful Dalyan River. Today, you can drive to the banks of the Dalyan River facing the rock tombs for a quick look at them from the ground, or take a boat on a half-day trip that includes a mud bath and a visit to Iztuzu beach.

Tomb of Amyntas

Fethiye in ancient times was the ancient city of Telmessos which was one of the most important, culturally rich and flourishing cities of the Lycian civilization. The remains of this period are the rock tombs of Amyntas built in the 4th century BC, carved into the slopes of soaring mountains. The Lycians believed that after death, the soul would be transported to the afterlife by magical winged creatures, so they placed tombs in high places on hills or mountainsides.

From Fethiye you only drive around 45 minutes to reach the tomb of Amyntas. The tomb is carved into the rock, at first sight, the lonian columns have attracted everyone’s attention. In the middle of the left column is the inscription in Greek “Amyntou tou Ermagiou” which means “Amyntas, son of Hermagios”. The uniqueness of this tomb is its size equivalent to a large temple while many other tombs are quite small in size.

Ruins of Ancient City of Tlos

The most important Lycian religious site was the ancient city of Tlos, which dates back to around 2000 BC. Tlos is located 35 km southeast of Fethiye on a hill with picturesque views of the river Esen. Tlos was the most powerful city of the ancient Lycia federation, then it was ruled by the Roman empire, then ruled by the Byzantine empire so in Tlos you can find a lot of traces of different dynasties. The Roman baths and theater can accommodate up to 20,000 people, the Lycian tombs and finally the Bloody Ali fortress of the Ottoman Empire. The most famous Lycian tomb is the Bellerophon tomb nestled in the foothills. It is believed that this is the family mausoleum of the Tlos royal dynasties.

The most famous tourist attraction in Fethiye is Oludeniz or otherwise known as Blue Lagoon. Oludeniz is so magical emerald green under the clear sky, floating clouds, white sand, mountains and stretching trees. The blue sea is surprisingly clear and vibrant. You can immerse and swim in the clear water all day, sunbathe in the gentle sunshine, rent a hotel on the high mountain with a direct view of the sea. From Blue Lagoon you can rent a boat to take you to the Butterfly Valley to enjoy the pristine beach, no electricity, no TV, no wifi, only a coffee shop, watching the wonderful sunset beautiful in this place.

Ölüdeniz is also known as Turkey’s “Blue Lagoon” because of its pristine turquoise waters. It is located near the foot of Mount Babadağ, about 20 minutes by car from the center of Fethiye city. Visiting the blue lagoon is one of the best things to do in Oludeniz.

To access the Blue Lagoon, which is separate from the main beach, you need to walk in. Inside you’ll find several small restaurants, shops, changing rooms and bathrooms, and you can rent a sun lounger for a small fee.

As one of the most famous beaches of Turkey, 15 km stretch of fine white sand surrounded by dense trees. The sea doesn’t get deep quickly, so you can walk for a long time until you can fully dive in the water.

You can also join a tour of paragliding over Oludeniz: From a great height, dropping yourself in the sky, you can capture all the beauty of the Oludeniz sea in sight. This is really a very Yomost feeling.

Saklikent National Park (#fethiye travel guide)

The national park including Saklikent Gorge is known to the whole world! Saklikent Gorge is recognized as the longest and deepest canyon in Saklikent Turkey and the second largest canyon in Europe. Its length is 18 km and the elevation at various locations is up to 1000 meters. Throughout its path, it features fascinating steep cliffs of natural beauty, waterfalls, and 16 caves. Altitude difference between inlet and outlet of Saklikent gorge in 720 meters!

Saklikent gorge stands out for its pristine beauty! Red pine forests grow around it and there is a river that flows at an amazing speed on its territory that even in summer is as cold as ice. The high cliffs of Saklikent gorge transmit almost no light into the canyon interior.

Saklikent National Park was established in 1996. It is an example of Turkey’s wild nature and a unique tourist center for those who love trekking, climbing and picnicking. Its area is 12,390 hectares and the word Saklıkent in Turkish means “hidden city”.

Hike through Saklikent gorge: You will hike through a gorge with soaring cliffs, wade through a fast-flowing river and then walk through a narrow ravine to reach a waterfall at the end of the gorge. With such natural conditions and weather and being in the upper reaches of the river, this Fethiye tourist attraction offers visitors a walk along the breathtaking gorge. The bravest who are about to reach the end of the Saklikent gorge should have a special outfit!

Butterfly Valley

Fethiye’s Kelebekler Vadisi, or Butterfly Valley in English, is a secluded beach accessible only by boat. The Butterfly Valley is located south of Oludeniz and is one of the best kept secrets of Fethiye. You can get there by taking a shuttle boat from Oludeniz main beach for 30TL both ways – boats depart from Oludeniz at 11am, 12:30pm, 2pm and 3pm and return back from Butterfly Valley in the afternoon.

Once you get into the valley, you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush forest and breathtaking beaches to explore. There are treehouses and modest accommodations here and there. Local and international visitors to Butterfly Valley make nighttime bonfires a tradition and community spirit much like the hippie movement of the ’60s.

There are more than 85 different species of butterflies that inhabit in the valley, hence the name. The best time to see the butterflies is in June. If you really want to see butterflies resting, be careful not to be loud and avoid large groups.

There is also a waterfall at the end of the valley. The way to the waterfall requires climbing, so have a good pair of waterproof shoes ready as you might slip while wearing flip-flops!

Shop with the locals at the Weekly Market

If you really want to learn about culture when traveling to Fethiye, you should visit the local weekly markets, and Fethiye is no exception. The market takes place along the canal next to the stadium every Tuesday, this huge market offers vegetables, fruits, clothes, home appliances, food… everything you can think of. This is the cheapest way to shop as well as the richest in the variety of services.

As Turkey’s longest beach, Patara is an idyllic spot for sunbathing. Once an important city of Lycia, you can also see some beach ruins in Patara, a perfect combination of history and coast. Legend has it that Saint Nicholas of Myra, “Santa Claus” as we call him today, was born in Patara in the 4th century!

Patara is 70 km south of Fethiye, is home to Turkey’s longest beach so it’s the perfect place to sunbathe and relax.

Coming to Fethiye, rent a boat to go along the bays to immerse yourself in the beautiful water, enjoy delicious dishes from seafood, beef and passionate glasses of wine, lie on the boat listening to music watching the sky. If you know how to scuba dive you can go free diving or be accompanied, the underwater world in Fethiye is very unique and interesting. Boat tours to the bays usually have two types: half-day and one-day, the number of bays to visit depends on the tour you choose.

The nearby archaeological site of Pinara is less touristy than other Lycian sites in the area. There are more than 900 monolithic house tombs and dolmens in the ruins of the Lycian city of Pinara. The area around the old theater is amazing, as you enjoy the mountain peaks and dense forest that surrounds you.

Abandoned Village of Kayakoy

Right next to Fethiye is a rather impressive site and obviously well worth a visit: the abandoned village of Kayaköy. This village was actually inhabited by Greeks before the First World War. But after the ensuing war between the Greeks and the Turks, the Greek inhabitants of Kayaköy were forced to leave Turkey. But unlike the village of Sirince, here, no Turks have settled in the abandoned village (especially since the area suffered a terrible earthquake in 1957). Only the ruins of a few hundred houses remain, left there as an open-air museum.

A village built entirely of stone formerly inhabited by Greeks and Turks. In 1923, after the ethnic cleansing, the people left this place, Kayakoy has been abandoned since then. Among the ruins left in Kayakoy are the Greek-style churches of Katapongagia and Taxiarchis, which are still relatively intact.

This beach is actually a lagoon in a national reserve park. A mighty mountain and green trees provide a background to the golden sand that meets the crystal clear turquoise waters.

Blue Lagoon, or Ölüdeniz as the locals call it, can make every type of beach-goer happy. The beach curves up to form a shallow seawater lake on one side, making the beach a safe playground for children.

2. Glide Over Belcekız Beach

Paragliding is a popular activity in Fethiye . The Belcekız/Belceğiz beach that’s right next to the Blue Lagoon lies at the Babadağ Mountain’s foothills.

Standing at the Belcekız beach in Ölüdeniz, it’s impossible to miss the big, black pirate ship right out of the Pirates of the Caribbean. The large figurehead invites you to a fun journey on the open sea, and the ship takes you on a daily cruise to the wonderful bays and coves in Fethiye.

Try to book your trip ahead during the high season. But don’t worry if you cannot book a trip on the Dragon , the famous pirate ship of Ölüdeniz. There are many other boats waiting on the beach to take you on a fantastic sail.

The daily boat trips depart at 10:00 am and offer lunch on the ship for its passengers. You’ll have the chance to visit five coves and beaches, each one more beautiful than the last.

The boats first head across to the world-famous Kelebekler Vadisi (Butterfly Valley). The next stop is Akvaryum Koyu (Aquarium Bay), which is perfect for snorkeling. Deve Plajı (Camel Beach) is an interesting stop named after the rock formations.

Soğuksu Koyu (Cold Water Bay) gets its name from freshwater springs coming out from the mountain under the sea. Gemiler Adası (Saint Nicolas Island) has a rocky beach with crystal clear waters and ruins of a church dating back to the 5th century.

The trip ends at about 4.30 pm. The daily boat trip costs about $15-20 USD, including lunch. Drinks, snacks, and swimming shoes are offered on the boat at an extra cost.

7. Take a Walk in a Ghost Town

Don’t worry, there’s nothing spooky about this town. Kayaköy (meaning “the Rock Village”) is an old village full of abandoned stone houses. Visiting this town will add a unique experience to your holiday and a lot of Instagram-worthy pictures.

You can take a minibus from Ölüdeniz or Fethiye center to get to this ghost town. But as you walk further into Kayaköy, you’re alone with the faint ghosts of the past.

This village was abandoned due to the population exchange in 1923, following the Greco-Turkish war. When a severe earthquake hit the village in 1957 and destroyed most of the buildings, the town perfectly blended into its surroundings, offering us a stunning view.

Stroll around the village and take your time to breathe in the serene atmosphere of this village that is frozen in time. The chapel at the top of the village presents you with a panoramic view of the valley and the sea.

Walking around the ruins in Kataköy, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about the memories of people whom you never knew.

If you want to shake off the nostalgia and return to the present day, and you’re in for a surprise, just follow the signpost that reads "Gemiler Adası."

After a relaxing walk among the trees, you’ll find yourself in a beautiful bay surrounded by pine trees. Swimming in the crystal clear waters of Gemiler Beach will be the perfect way to end this peaceful trip.

8. Trek Through Saklıkent Canyon

Trekking through the gorge in Saklikent National Park is a full-day adventure. Don’t forget to wear or bring along your swimwear, swimming shoes, or trekking sandals and make sure your footwear is nonslip as you’ll spend a lot of time walking in the water.

The ancient city of Tlos is believed to be the home of Pegasus. Here you’ll see the ruins of a large stadium for 3500 people, Roman baths, temples, tombs, and even a 19th-century Ottoman citadel.

It also has a swimming pool if you ever get tired of the amazing beaches in Fethiye. The hotel is surrounded by green hills but is very central. There are lots of restaurants and bars around but you’ll feel safe walking at night.
• Green Pine Beach & Bungalows (link to see availability on Expedia) is what you need if you want a hotel that is one with nature on a private beach. Sure, it doesn’t offer some of the usual luxuries, but you get to stay on the Blue Lagoon itself. These beach bungalows are for the young and the romantic.

Many people confuse Fethiye with Oludeniz and often think they are the same place. For transparency, Fethiye is the city, and Oludeniz is a small town just a 10-minute drive away from the city center.

Most of the attractions in Fethiye are in Oludeniz , such as the famous Blue Lagoon, the Cable Car to Babadağ Teleferik, and the trailhead for The Lycian Way. It’s also where you find world-class paragliding experiences that make this region so famous.

However, Oludeniz can be extremely crowded, especially in the summer. Oludeniz is a small town, so when it’s busy with tourists, it feels very busy. So Fethiye provides a bit of an escape from other tourists.

Because it’s only a 10-minute drive away, and there are regular dolmus (minibusses) that run between Fethiye and Oludeniz ( every 5 minutes ), it’s really easy to travel between the two places.

One of the main reasons to visit Fethiye is for the beaches. Nestled on the Mediterranean Sea, the beaches in Fethiye are known for their glistening, turquoise waters.

The beaches come in many shapes and sizes, some with soft sand and others with pebbly beaches. They are usually clean and well maintained since Turkey prides itself on having Blue Flag Beaches (a status given to beaches with impeccable cleanliness and environmental conservation efforts).

What’s more, is that the weather is usually always good for paragliding. It’s said that  80% of days are flyable .

Reasons NOT to Visit Fethiye

Although Fethiye is undeniably a captivating destination and has a lot of beauty, it can sometimes be hard to appreciate it amid the throngs of crowds.

During peak tourist seasons, such as summer, the popular attractions and beaches can become quite congested, especially on the beaches. Even when visiting quiet beaches, such as Butterfly Valley’s beach, the boat tours with their loud music and the sheer volume of people can diminish the tranquility of the place.

You can also expect long queues, crowded streets, and packed restaurants, which can make traveling stressful when take away from the serenity that Fethiye has to offer.

However, you can visit during the winter or Autumn and escape the crowds, though it may be too cold to sit on the beaches.

2. Not Relaxing

A consequence of the above – large crowds means less relaxation. While many praise Fethiye for its natural beauty, I must confess that it may not be the ideal destination for those seeking a truly relaxing experience.

The bustling atmosphere, especially during the peak tourist seasons, can create a sense of constant activity and energy. The vibrant nightlife, lively markets, and crowded streets may not offer the serenity and tranquility that some travelers desire.

The popularity of Fethiye means that certain areas can be crowded no matter what time of day or time of year you visit, making it challenging to find a peaceful spot to unwind. If you’re in search of a more secluded and tranquil getaway, then we recommend visiting Kas or Alanya on the East Coast of Turkey.

3. Expensive Compared to Other Turkey Destinations

Turkey is not expensive compared to other destinations in Europe, but Fethiye and other destinations on the coast are more expensive than other popular destinations inland, such as Cappadocia, Istanbul, and Izmir.

The reason for this is that being by the beach is one of the main reasons to visit Turkey, and these coastal towns are not short of tourists looking to part with their cash and enjoy a beach vacation.

The cost of hotels, transport, and food in restaurants, was more expensive than other parts of Turkey from our experience.

4. No Backpacker Vibes

While Fethiye is undoubtedly a popular destination for travelers, it’s more suited to families and groups of people, as opposed to backpackers and solo travelers.

The town attracts a significant number of tourists, which can drive up prices for accommodations, food, and activities.

We found the hostels in Fethiye and Oludeniz to be of poor quality (compared to other parts of Turkey) in terms of facilities and price. There are not too many hotels or experiences that cater to a budget-conscious traveler.

Additionally, Fethiye’s popularity means that it can be crowded, making it challenging to find available accommodation last minute, especially during peak seasons.

For backpackers looking to immerse themselves in local culture and travel on a shoestring budget, there are other destinations in Turkey that offer a more authentic and affordable experience whilst also allowing you to experience the beauty of the Turkish Coast, such as Antalya.

5. Highly Commercialized / Limited Local Experience

Fethiye may not be the ideal choice of destination for those seeking an authentic and non-commercialized experience. The town has become increasingly commercialized over the years, with a multitude of tourist-focused establishments and activities dominating the scene.

From bustling markets selling mass-produced souvenirs rather than locally made handicrafts to crowded beaches lined with sunbeds that you have to pay 100 Lira to use – the charm of Fethiye can sometimes get overshadowed by its commercial nature.

For travelers yearning for a more off-the-beaten-path experience, where they can connect with the local culture and traditions in a more genuine way, Fethiye is not for you. We recommend exploring destinations like Cappadocia or Konya where you can still get an authentic experience whilst still being tourist friendly.

6. Scorching Summer Heat

Summer is peak season for Fethiye, but it’s also the time when the scorching summer heat can get unbearable, which can be a deterrent for some travelers.

With temperatures soaring well above 30 degrees Celsius, the intense heat can make outdoor activities and exploration uncomfortable, especially during the peak summer months.

The relentless sun may limit the enjoyment of popular attractions such as the ancient ruins or hiking trails. While the nearby beaches offer respite, many of them lack shade (unless you pay for the use of an umbrella) and they can also be crowded during this time.

For those who prefer milder climates or are sensitive to extreme heat, it might be worth considering visiting Fethiye during cooler seasons when the temperatures are more pleasant for outdoor adventures.

Although there are some notable sites like the Lycian Rock Tombs and the Ghost Village of Kayaköy, the options can feel limited.

Although the issue can be managed with precautions, those who are particularly sensitive to mosquito bites or prefer destinations with fewer insects may want to explore alternative options.

It’s also not the best destination to visit if you want cultural experiences, since it has become highly commercialized and relies heavily on tourism, so you’ll find a lot of Western-style restaurants and bars.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle visit Nigeria, share mental health message with students

Harry and Meghan are spending three days in Nigeria.

Prince Harry and Meghan , the Duchess of Sussex, are no longer working royals, having stepped away from the role four years ago, but for the next several days, the Sussexes are on a trip that looks similar to their royal tours of the past .

On Friday, Harry and Meghan, who now live in California, kicked off a three-day visit to Nigeria, a country in West Africa that they are both visiting for the first time.

Harry and Meghan's visit has no affiliation with Britain's royal family , and is instead at the invitation of the country's Chief of Defense Staff, its highest-ranking military official.

Their three-day visit will have the couple interacting with not only military officials but also locals, including women leaders and servicemen and women.

On Friday, Harry and Meghan visited a school in the capital city of Abuja together, kicking off an inaugural mental health summit run by a local nonprofit, GEANCO, which is affiliated with their Archewell Foundation. The couple was serenaded with cheers and dancing by the children.

Harry spoke to the students and teachers about why it's important to break the stigma around mental health and acknowledge how you feel.

"Every single person in this room, the youngest, the oldest, every single person has mental health. So therefore, you have to look after yourself to be able to look after other people. And other people have to be able to look after themselves, to look after you. That's the way it works. And there is no shame to be able to acknowledge that today is a bad day, OK?" Harry told the crowd.

He added, "[If] you woke up this morning feeling sad, and you left school feeling stressed, and you've lost a loved one in your family, and you don't know who you talk to or who to speak to -- all of these things you may be led to believe are not for conversation, we are here today to tell you that that is not the case. Every single one of those things is completely normal. It is a human reaction, whether it's grief, stress, whatever the feeling is, it comes from an experience that you have had. You can have it. She can have it. I can have it. They can have it. Every single one of us is likely to have that on any given day. So, if you take anything away from today, just know that mental health affects every single person in the entire world."

While visiting a kindergarten class, the children had the couple on their feet again for a joyous game of "jump up, turn around."

Harry asked a student, "Is singing and dancing your favorite class?"

Meghan added that their daughter Lili, who is about to turn 3, also loves "all the jumping around."

They also visited a STEM class where students shared robot cars they'd built, and Meghan revealed her son Archie, now 5, liked construction too.

The couple were gifted a traditional wooden mask and books about Nigerian heritage.

What else to expect from Harry and Meghan's trip

Harry will also meet with injured service members at a local military hospital during the trip, a spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed to ABC News, and the couple plan to meet with the Chief of Defense Staff.

On Saturday, the couple plan to attend a training session for Nigeria: Unconquered, a nonprofit organization that is affiliated with the Invictus Games , a Paralympic-style competition for wounded service members that Harry founded in 2014.

Meghan is also scheduled to co-host an event on women in leadership with the director general of the World Trade Organization.

On Sunday, their final day in Nigeria, Harry and Meghan will attend a basketball clinic and a "cultural reception," according to their spokesperson.

The couple will also attend a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.

Just as they did during their days as working royals, Harry and Meghan are accompanied on the trip by a pool reporter and photographer, according to their spokesperson.

Couple drew big crowds on royal tours before exit.

On previous official visits as working royals, Harry and Meghan were known to draw large crowds and bring global attention to the countries they visited.

In late 2019, Harry and Meghan traveled to South Africa for what would be their last major overseas royal tour. There, they shone in public events interacting with locals, but also spoke candidly about the struggles they faced as newlyweds and new parents under the glare of the public spotlight.

"It's hard," Meghan told ITV anchor Tom Bradby for the documentary, "Harry & Meghan: An African Journey." "I don't think anybody could understand that."

Just months later, in January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced to the world that they planned to "step back" from their duties as senior members of Britain's royal family.

Shortly after that announcement, Buckingham Palace confirmed the Sussexes would no longer be "working members" of the royal family.

Since then, the couple has settled in California with their two young children, Archie and Lilibet, and become financially independent, taking on new roles in the entertainment and philanthropy worlds.

Harry and Meghan have returned together to the United Kingdom since their departure less than a handful of times, most recently attending the funeral for the late Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Prince Harry changes residence to US in company filing

Harry returned to London solo on May 8 to attend a 10th anniversary service for the Invictus Games held at St. Paul's Cathedral.

The duke did not see his father King Charles III nor his brother Prince William during his visit.
