10 Best Things to Do in Heerenveen (Netherlands)

A city of 30,000 in Friesland, Heerenveen has a sporting prowess that belies its modest size.

Thialf, the Netherlands’ top speed skating arena is here, and this is big news in a nation that leaves all competition trailing on the ice.

The local football team , SC Heerenveen will forever be synonymous with the famed striker Abe Lenstra, but has also helped produce some modern hotshots like Ruud van Nistelrooy and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

In the same municipality, Oranjewoud was founded as an estate in the 17th century by Countess Albertine Agnes of Nassau, widow of the Stadtholder of Friesland, William Frederick.

In the 19th century a few prominent families in the region set up their own, smaller estates at Ornanjewoud.

These opulent mansions are private but there’s an excellent art museum, and the 17th-century park is open to the public.

1. Museum Belvédère

Devoted to modern and contemporary art, the Museum Belvédère is in Oranjewoud and named for a 1920s lookout tower in the park.

In an award-winning low-impact building straddling a canal, the museum was opened in 2004 by Queen Beatrix and deals mainly with Frisian artists, including the likes of Jan Mankes, Gerrit Benner and Thijs Rinsema.

The exhibition brings you from the 19th century to the present, via Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Constructivism and New Figuration.

When we wrote this article in late 2018 there were shows for Dick van Arkel and Tjibbe Hooghiemstra, respectively inspired by the Frisian polders and the bocage landscape of the Friese Wouden.

Speed skating is a Dutch forte, and over the last 35 years this nation has taken twice as many ISU Speed Skating World Cup (986) as its nearest rival the USA (436). One of the cathedrals to this speed skating is Thialf, a 12,500-seater arena for ice sports, opened in 1986 and renovated in 2016. The outdoor rink beside it goes back to 1967 and was inaugurated by Princess Christina.

Thialf is the top venue for skating in the Netherlands, hosting two World Cup events a season as well as home matches for the Friesland Flyers ice hockey team, competing in the Eredevisie.

The track is noted for its speed, and world-records in various distances tumble here each season.

Check the opening times, and from September to March you can come to test the ice, either on the famous 400-metre track or the casual Krabbelbaan.

Skate rental is available, and there’s a special 30 x 30 metre rink for younger skaters.

3. Crackstate

A municipal building since the 19th century, this Baroque mansion was ordered by the grietman (roughly equivalent to a mayor) Johannes Sytzes Crack in 1648. In the Frisian tradition the name of the house is a portmanteau of the owner, Crack’s name and state (estate). The Crackstate is protected by a moat, crossed by a bridge built in 1775, with iron gates dating from 1819. Climbing above the pediment is a lantern, believed to have been used as a watchtower, which has held the Crackstate’s ring of bells since the 1960s.

In 1890 a prison was added to the basement and used as a torture chamber during the Second World War.

On a lighter note, the Crackstate is now a wedding venue set next door to a new city hall built in 1993.

4. Oenemastate

This magnificent villa dates to 1640 and was built as a residence for the grietman Amelius van Oenema.

After being handed down two local noble families the Oenemastate became the official office for Heerenveen’s grietman in 1828, and then a town hall for Heerenveen from 1876. On the balustrade below the fine central dormer there are panels recording the building’s construction and its restoration in 1876. After being sold off in the 20th century villa is now a grand cafe, worth visiting so you can check out the exuberant ceiling paintings.

5. Museum Heerenveen

You can get the lowdown on Heerenveen’s history at this local museum, which has a display of historical objects, archaeological artefacts and works from regional artists like the Symbolist Jan Mankes.

There’s an exhibition about the distinguished families that resided at Oranjewoud, as well as their poorer peat-cutting counterparts, and a highly detailed scale model of Heerenveen as it would have looked in 1830. You can track the life and career of the prolific Heerenveen striker Abe Lenstra (1920-1985) and learn about the town’s long ties to industry, and famous Dutch manufacturers like the bike brand Batavus and Koninklijke Smilde.

There also a sculpture garden, changing displays of contemporary art and a museum shop designed like a 19th-century Heerenveen pharmacy.

6. Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis Museum

Part of the Heerenveen Museum, but officially a separate attraction is this biographical collection dedicated to the first socialist in the Dutch parliament.

Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis (1846-1919) represented the Frisian People’s Party and was elected in 1888, lasting three years in the House of Representatives, after which he leaned towards anarchism and revolution.

During his incumbency he proposed universal suffrage, an eight-hour working day, an introduction of a minimum wage, ending the Netherlands’ war in Aceh, and many other policies that were a little too progressive for the period.

In four areas you can view some personal possessions, uncover his private life, read excerpts from letters, view his library and assess his impact on the Netherlands at the turn of the century and today.

7. De Overtuin

The Oranjewoud’s parkland has been open to the public since 1953. Dating from the 17th century, this as old as Oranjewoud, and was updated to stay fashionable, first in the Baroque style in the 18th century and then as an English landscape park in the 19th century.

The park is a Dutch heritage site in its own right, and its canals and oak and beech avenues survive from its foundation in the 17th century.

In the landscape garden there are meandering paths through groves and around a kidney-shaped water feature.

The mass of rhododendrons here goes back to the 1800s and are spectacular in June when they flower.

To the east you can scale the 18-metre concrete Belvedère tower (1924), 18 metres tall and giving its name to the museum nearby.

8. Welgelegen Windmill

The handsome smock mill on Tjepkemastraat was erected in 1849 and has been millling flour by wind power once more after a restoration in the early 1970s.

The upper floors containing the mill’s machinery are thatched, while the lower levels are composed of brick and were heightened by six metres in 1898 to raise the sails above the surrounding buildings.

Mill aficionados can pay a visit on Saturday mornings to inspect the Burr and Cullen stones, cogs, shaft and gears, all in action if the wind is blowing.

At the shop you can peruse a variety of flours, from spelt to six-grain bread flour, all produced at this 170-year-old mill in the old-fashioned way.

9. SC Heerenveen

The local football team is one of those sides that like, say Athletic Bilbao, Bayern Munich or FC Barcelona, conjures a real sense of regional identity.

SC Heerenveen’s crest is the flag of Frieslad, with diagonal blue and white stripes dotted with the “pompeblêd”, heraldic water lily leafs that look a lot like hearts.

The Frisian national anthem, De Alde Friezen, is sung before every home domestic game at the 27,224-capacity Abe Lenstra Stadion.

Opened in1 1994, this is named for the club’s greatest player, who had a scoring ration better than 1 to 1 in his 18-year association with “De Superfriezens”. SC Heerenveen’s average attendance is 20,000, so there’s a good atmosphere but also means you should be able to get tickets provided you first register for a free club card.

10. Frisian Lakes

Heerenveen is on the eastern flank of a lake district, the Friese Meren, cherished in the Netherlands, but little known among visitors from overseas.

These 35 lakes, intertwined with rivers and canals are in fact man made, having been created by peat cutting starting in Medieval times.

One thing you could do is ride there, through easy-going countryside, passing herds of Frisian cows.

You can hire a bike from Heerenveen Tweewielers in the centre of town and the tourist office at the Heerenveen Museum has plenty of maps and leaflets.

In summer a world of water activities opens up at the lakes, be it tours in heritage vessels, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, kite-surfing, windsurfing or kayaking.

You can also use the canal network to reach the lakes from Heerenveen.

There’s a hire centre, Bootverhuur Kalf on the Heeresloot canal boasting a small armada of motorboats, some of which don’t require licences.

Taylor Swift is feeling all the feels after her beau, Travis Kelce , joined her onstage Sunday during the Eras Tour .

On Monday, the "Bad Blood" singer took to Instagram to reflect on her three-show run at London's Wembley Stadium, which began on Friday. One of the biggest highlights came on night three when the Kansas City Chiefs tight end surprised the crowd when he joined her onstage.  

"Wembley Stadium round one was so surreal. Looking out into crowds of 90,000 fans each night and hearing that VOLUME… Those were some of the loudest crowds I’ve ever heard," the 34-year-old singer wrote. "Acoustic sections went OFF. I got to sing 'Castles Crumbling' with @yelyahwilliams for the first time - hadn't performed with her since 2011 and man my heart was just so full of love for her and our friendship. Then the impossibly gifted and wonderful @gracieabrams came and surprised the crowd with the first performance of our song 'us.'"

Swift ended her post by reacting to her boyfriend's big Eras Tour debut. 

"And I'm still cracking up/swooning over @killatrav's Eras Tour debut 🥰 Never going to forget these shows. Can't wait to do it 5 more times in August. Up next: Dublin!! 🇮🇪 📷: @kevinmazur / @garethcattermole / @hogieaaa__ / @gettyimages," she wrote.

The "Bad Blood" singer's post began with a picture of Kelce -- dressed in a tux and top hat -- onstage with her and other dancers during the skit ahead of Swift's "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart." It also included photos of her and Hayley Williams and Gracie Abrams performing their separate duets. 

Swift rounded out the post with a video of Kelce's big moment. 

A source tells ET that Swift was waiting for the right moment for her boyfriend the join her onstage, and he nailed it after just one night of rehearsal.

"Taylor and Travis have recently discussed Travis making an appearance onstage at the Eras Tour, when timing was right, and they finally made it happen," the source says. "Travis was so excited to support Taylor onstage, and Taylor couldn't be happier to feature him, especially during such a fun, pivotal scene in the show. Travis only had one night of rehearsal, the evening before he performed onstage, and didn't miss a beat. Taylor was beaming from ear to ear as Travis took on the dapper role. The two are hoping he can make a cameo again in the future."

The Super Bowl champion -- who was spotted in the VIP section -- surprised fans when he took the stage. For his bit, Kelce carried his girlfriend in his arms before the other dancers stripped her of her dress and revealed a white two-piece set underneath, all as Kelce watched from afar, fanning himself and smiling from ear to ear. 

Before running off the stage, No. 87 adorably pretended to apply makeup to his  lover 's face, grinning as Swift -- acting like a rag doll of sorts -- pretended to be over the whole situation. 

After the moment, Kelce was greeted by Swift's other notable support system, her mother Andrea Swift, and friends Sophie Turner and Gracie Abrams. Kelce, along with his brother, Jason Kelce, and sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce , were on hand for all three performances. 

Swift and Kelce kept the party going -- until four in the morning -- after the show as they hit up hot spot Chiltern Firehouse and partied late into the night with Turner and  Ellie Goulding , who were also at the show.

The couple was spotted holding hands outside of the venue and sporting coordinating outfits. Swift turned heads in a colorful crochet mini-dress featuring long, slightly flared sleeves. She accessorized with yellow open-toe chunky heeled sandals and a brown shoulder bag. As for Kelce, he embraced a casual chic style, donning a white shirt paired with matching pants and a blue bucket hat. 

Swift's IG post comes after she and Kelce went IG official on Friday. Following her first show at Wembley, the "Lavender Haze" singer took to Instagram to share a selfie featuring her, Kelce, Prince William, Princess George and Princess Charlotte -- who attended the concert on the future king's birthday .

"Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start 🇬🇧🇺🇸🤝 @princeandprincessofwales," she captioned the photo. 

Swift's weekend in London was a star-studded affair as her three shows brought out some of the biggest celebrities including Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Tom Cruise and more. 

In May, a source told ET that Kelce and Swift -- who began their love story last year -- have family and friends suspicious of an engagement. 

"Taylor and Travis are doing amazing, and their loved ones see an engagement coming sooner than later," the source said. "They make a great match and there's no question about that."

Taylor Swift may be famous for evolving her personal style to suit each of her musical eras , but Roberto Cavalli’s been a constant in her sartorial storytelling since the start.

So it’s no surprise that when it came time to create the costumes for her blockbuster Eras Tour , Swift turned to the brand’s creative director, Fausto Puglisi, to put a fresh spin on some of her most iconic looks — like the gold fringed Cavalli minidress from her 2011 “Speak Now” tour, which inspired the similarly swingy style she wears for the “Fearless” section of the show.

“When Joseph [Cassell Falconer, Swift’s stylist] and Taylor started talking about the fringe [look], we went back to the archives. It was a very 2000s moment, but I proposed something a little lighter,” Puglisi tells Page Six Style, adding that there’s far more to this metallic mini than meets the eye.

“Every single fringe is made of very, very small beads connected to each other. It’s a work of couture and a work of craftsmanship. Taylor deserves the best!”

In order to “understand the best place to fix every single fringe,” the Sicilian designer worked off a mannequin with Swift’s exact measurements, arranging the strands in a playful zigzag pattern for maximum movement.

“It’s extremely fresh, extremely cool, extremely young and modern, but at the same time, a work of art that’s so intricate and so precise,” he says of the final look, which incorporates three different shades of gold for extra dimension. “It’s a lot of work, but she deserves this and more.”

While the “Fearless” dress (and its several variations) has been a constant since the tour’s April 2023 kickoff, Puglisi’s also peppered in new looks to keep fans on their toes; most recently, by replacing the fringed, geometric-patterned tops and skirts Swift wore for the “1989” portion of her North American shows with a series of colorful, crystal-embellished ombré sets for the tour’s European leg.

“I said, ‘Let’s go back to her roots.’ It’s about youth,” Puglisi says of the flirty, flared skater skirts and strappy bustiers. “The inspiration was Taylor herself.”

And while the designer whipped up the same top-and-skirt combo in “20-something” colors — “and there’s more coming,” he teases — it was Swift’s idea to mix and match them “like she mixes [musical] notes.”

“I designed [them] thinking about mixing orange with orange, turquoise with turquoise, purple with purple,” he explains. “But when we met in Paris, Joseph said, ‘She likes to mix [them] together!’ I start screaming from happiness, because I’m obsessed with color-blocking; it’s so ‘Miami Vice’ and it’s so colorful and it’s so fresh. There is this sense of freedom in mixing these colors.”

As for whether the big cat emblem adorning each of the tops is an Easter egg, as some fans have theorized ? They’re not entirely off; while it’s a brand signifier, it also nods to Swift’s well-documented fondness for felines.

“Wildcats are part of the DNA of Cavalli, so I said, ‘Why don’t we put the brooch here?’ And she loved it,” Puglisi says. “She loves cats, I love cats!”

The designer looked to a different animal for inspiration when dreaming up the perfect look for the “Reputation” portion of Swift’s show: the snake.

“When Joseph explained to me [that she’s] the queen of snakes, I thought that was a fantastic idea. And at the end of the day, it became so iconic,” Puglisi says of his asymmetrical catsuit adorned with sparkly intertwined serpents.

Fans have noticed that while Swift alternates between a few different looks for the other “eras” of her show, we’ve only seen one “Reputation” costume — and that, coincidentally, the superstar has yet to reveal the release date for her re-recorded version of that album. With an announcement looming, could new catsuits be in the works?

“You will never know,” Puglisi says with a laugh. “She loves to surprise people!”

Some Swifties have even joked about her “Reputation” look “shedding” like an actual snake — and Puglisi acknowledges that when outfits designed with delicate embellishments are being worn for hours-long performances night after night, wear and tear is par for the course.

“We have dictates, of course; the zipper must be one way, we have to be careful with crystal [placement]. There are so many secrets,” he says, adding that Swift’s stylist is “fantastic” at ensuring any snags or missing sequins are fixed in between shows.

“Joseph is the real genius behind the scenes. People like Joseph, they have the vision, and they know how to handle these dramas.”

And while he calls the experience of designing her Eras Tour outfits a “dream,” Puglisi points to the “Midnights”-coded navy crop top and maxi skirt the musician wore the the 2023 Grammys as his personal favorite Swift-related project.

“It really looks like a midnight sky,” he says. “So chic, but very strong. And that’s what she is!”

While Swift’s been a “Cavalli girl” for well over a decade — even sitting front row at one of the brand’s Milan runway shows in 2010 — her relationship with Puglisi dates back to before he joined the company in 2020.

“Before I started designing Roberto Cavalli, I had my own line, and she supported my collection since the beginning,” he notes of the star, who wore a look from his namesake label in her 2017 music video for “Look What You Made Me Do.”

“So many [fashion] houses want to dress Taylor because she’s the No. 1. I dress Taylor because I love Taylor.”
