Fischer Travel Club Uluru

It’s official: Internet booking sites are the worst. Which means travel agents are back in a big way, to such a degree that the crème de la crème among them are so selective that they’ll work with only a small group of card-carrying members.

We talked to the top dogs at four very different membership travel companies to find out what kind of VIP hook ups they’ll get you—and how much hand-holding you can expect along the way.

Fischer Travel

Fischer Travel Club Capella Lodge

Source:  Stacy Fischer Rosenthal, president

The Gist: Founded almost 54 years ago by her father, Bill Fischer—who got his clients into sold-out spots like the Hotel du Cap in Antibes in the ’80s—this family-run business is as exclusive as a club gets. “We have a very serious vetting process,” says Fischer Rosenthal.

The Membership: You might want to sit down for this: a $100,000 initiation fee, plus an annual $25,000 renewal fee, plus service fees for all trip planning. And that’s only if you’re accepted. Right now, Fischer has just 175 members.

The Claim to Fame: One-on-one tennis lessons with John McEnroe, a private tour of the Egyptian pyramids, Christmas dinner cooked by a Michelin-starred chef—you name it, Fischer Rosenthal can do it. If she told us her team could move mountains, we’d almost believe her.

Hand-Holding Quotient: Next-level. “My clients will never check in at a front desk, they will never fill out any forms, they will never have a moment when their trip isn’t absolutely seamless.”

Essentialist

Essentialist Travel Club Iceland

Source: Joan Roca, founder

The Gist: Former Travelocity exec Roca ditched digital and went private bespoke in 2017 after realizing travelers didn’t need more choice—they needed more curation. His cabal of experts includes more than 75 journalists and editors specializing in various destinations around the world.

The Membership: A flat fee of $1,400 per household per year includes unlimited travel-planning services by a designated “travel designer” who knows everything about you, from what you like to eat to what you like to drive.

The Claim to Fame: Ultra-insider experiences are the name of Roca’s game, whether it’s the best paella in Majorca at a secret restaurant few locals know or a private dinner in a Venetian palazzo. “It’s not about the price tag,” he says. “It’s about discovering things that are under the radar and unique.”

Hand-Holding Quotient: Minimal. “Our client doesn’t require a lot of hand-holding,” Roca says. “They don’t want people standing at the door of their hotel room every morning. They just want to go.”

Marchay Travel Club

Courtesy of Marchay

Source:  Karl Backlund, cofounder

The Gist: With partner Jon Ein of private equity firm Foundry Capital, Backlund devised not an agency but a “travel community of like-minded individuals,” in which pay-for-play travel agents wouldn’t be welcome.

The Membership: $4,500 for a full annual membership with unlimited bespoke trip planning , or $1,750 for a one-trip planning fee. “We admit limited members to make sure the service standards are maintained,” Backlund says.

The Claim to Fame: Seamless execution of even the most complicated itineraries, whether it’s an island-hopping extravaganza in the Caribbean via private jet and yacht or a Scottish golf spree with 11 tee times in 11 days.

Hand-Holding Quotient: That’s up to you. “Our clients appreciate a significant portion of discovery—the thirst for exploration is definitely there,” Backlund says. But he’ll still hold your hand if you ask.

Inspirato Pass

Rose Hall Half Moon Iris

Source:  Brent Handler, founder

The Gist: Handler is like the Thomas Edison of travel clubs . He invented the destination club with Exclusive Resorts in 2002, then went on to create Inspirato , a similar but more affordable club in 2011. The Inspirato Pass , his latest brainchild, is a subscription app.

The Membership: $2,500 per month gets you household booking rights to exclusive trips, events and accommodations—all at no added cost. The catch? After booking a trip, you have to take it before you can reserve another.

The Claim to Fame: There’s the usual hotel suites and over-the-top villas, but what gets really interesting is Inspirato Pass ’s access to marquee events and experiences, from US Open seats to a European river cruise.

Hand-Holding Quotient: Surprisingly high, for an app. “All Inspirato Pass trips include pre-trip planning by our expert travel designers, including custom itineraries,” says Handler. Impressive.

World’s Most Exceptional Experiences

The world is an extraordinary place—filled with breathtaking landscapes to be explored, vibrant cities and cultures to be savored, and exhilarating adventures to be had. Traveling opens the doors to these splendors, which is why every travel experience is, in some sense, magical.

Still, as the most discerning travelers know, there exists a category of journeys that is more enchanting still. It is these extremely special, rarefied experiences—often available to only a select few—that can be considered not just remarkable, but transcendent and truly exceptional.

SCENIC ADVENTURES

South Africa.jpg

South Africa: Safari + Rhino Encounter

Set at the western edge of South Africa’s Kruger National Park, the 36,000-acre Ngala Private Game Reserve is home to a dazzling array of wildlife—including lions, cheetahs, and elephants, as well as a population of magnificent—and endangered—white rhinos.

Travel to Ngala and search for these amazing creatures with luxury safari company &Beyond . In addition to extensive wildlife-viewing opportunities by game drive, bush walk, and horseback riding, itineraries to South Africa include stays in sumptuous tented camps, lavish meals, and visits to tribal villages and wine estates. You can also add a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: The chance to actually touch a rhino . After the conservation team anesthetizes the endangered animal, you’ll assist with the important work of checking and ear-tagging the rhino for security and research, then releasing it back into its natural environs.

When to go: The dry season runs from May to September (when animals tend to be easier to spot); rhino conversation activity is subject to availability between April and September.

Australia: Outback Magic

The literal and figurative heart of Australia’s Red Center is Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a 512-square-mile, UNESCO World Heritage site of deep cultural significance for its traditional Aboriginal residents that’s best known for its colossal red-sandstone monolith, Uluru (also called Ayers Rock).

Travelers who make Longitude 131° their home base in this remote and sacred territory will enjoy a truly extraordinary experience. Offering the most opulent lodgings within the national park—16 tented pavilions whose floor-to-ceiling glass panes provide uninterrupted views over Uluṟu—the property also arranges unique excursions that include camel rides, visits to Aboriginal art centers, and evening trips to Bruce Munro’s astonishing Field of Light art installation , with its 50,000 glowing spindles that illuminate the desert night.

When to go: Between May and September, when daytime temperatures are typically below 90°F (they can be much higher during the rest of the year).

Scotland.jpg

Scotland: Luxury Rail Journey

The Scottish Highlands are a natural paradise of majestic mountains, sweeping moors, verdant glens, and rugged coasts—all punctuated with historic castle estates and distilleries that produce the region’s world-famous whiskies.

Perhaps the finest way to experience this enchanting realm is by traveling aboard one of Europe’s most exclusive and elegant trains, the Belmond Royal Scotsman . It accommodates just 36 guests who sleep in plush, wood-paneled cabins with private en-suite bathrooms, dine on epicurean Scottish fare, and enjoy decadent treatments in a deluxe spa car. The classic, Edwardian-style train makes stops at many of the region’s most treasured highlights, such as the castle estates at Eilean Donan, Ballindalloch, and Rothiemurchus; glittering Loch Lomond; the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis; and the storied Glenfiddich distillery, maker of superior single-malt Scotch whisky.

When to go: Between April and October (train tours are only offered during these months, to avoid cold and inclement weather).

Antarctica.jpg

Antarctica: Unique New Cruise

Perhaps the ultimate bucket list destination, Antarctica is no doubt the toughest to reach of the seven continents. It’s also, many would say, the most alluring, with otherworldly glaciers, icebergs, and vast penguin colonies.

Now you can visit Antarctica in extreme style, thanks to luxury purveyor Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours . The company’s new Scenic Eclipse is a super-swanky, all-suite discovery yacht that brings some amazing toys to the continent—namely, helicopters and a submarine, allowing you to travel far inland and go deep underwater. (The ship also has more traditional Zodiac boats and kayaks.) The 11-night voyages to the White Continent from Ushuaia, Argentina are also over-the-top in their pampering. On board, you’ll find eight gourmet dining venues (unprecedented for a vessel of this kind) and a signature Whiskey Bar with more than 100 bottles, plus a cooking classroom, full-service spa, and yoga studio.

When to go: Sailing season in Antarctica runs from November through March.

New York City: Behind-the-Scenes Broadway

For generations, theater enthusiasts from around the globe have made the pilgrimage to New York City’s legendary Theater District—where 41 illustrious professional theaters are centered around a 14-block stretch of Midtown Manhattan and known simply, of course, as Broadway. Most of the world’s best-loved musicals, from Rodgers & Hammerstein classics to Andrew Lloyd Weber extravaganzas, have originated here.

It’s a rare treat to step behind the curtain of these elaborate productions and meet the actors who work together to conjure Broadway magic. But Signature Travel Network offers travelers the opportunity to take a private backstage tour of a show of their choice, where they can meet and take photos with cast members. Or, for an even more special experience, you can arrange (with lots of lead time) to sit in on a rehearsal for select shows.

When to go: Year-round, but especially September through January, as Midtown Manhattan is especially alluring in the autumn and winter holiday seasons.

Rome.jpg

Rome: After-Hours Sistine Chapel

The Vatican Museums—a vast complex of galleries, salons, and gardens that contain a trove of precious artworks by the likes of Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, and Leonardo da Vinci—are among the most beloved art destinations in the world. The site’s crowning jewel, of course, is the Sistine Chapel, whose frescoed walls and ceiling are widely considered to be Michelangelo’s most glorious masterpiece.

For travelers seeking intimate communion with these artistic treasures, Context Travel offers the ultimate tour of the museums and Sistine Chapel—in private and after hours, when the museum galleries’ crowds empty out. Plus, the tour is led by an expert art historian, whose knowledge enriches an already-divine experience.

When to go: Anytime—with enough advance planning. Since these highly coveted tours are only offered on a very limited basis each year, bookings are typically made months ahead of time.

Japan.jpg

Japan: Hidden Art Island

The remarkable and somewhat surreal “art island” of Naoshima, tucked away in Japan’s inland Seto Sea, is like its own five-square-mile, multi-dimensional art installation.

A bespoke tour of the island with Jacada Travel allows travelers to fully immerse themselves in this wondrous world, which is populated with fantastical outdoor sculptures and architect-designed museums that seem to have grown out of the surrounding landscape (or into it; some galleries are subterranean). An art-expert guide helps them navigate through the rotating cast of exhibits and international art shows, displayed in the ever-evolving collection of art spaces. Along with art appreciation, multi-day tours can include hikes and bikes around the island, beach visits, and stays in the stylish Benesse House, a museum that’s also a boutique hotel.

When to go: Between April and October, when rainfall is minimal.

Los Angeles.jpg

Photos courtesy of Vespertine

Los Angeles: Outré Dining

Chef Jordan Kahn doesn’t refer to his wildly unusual, deeply artistic dining establishment as a restaurant; rather, he prefers to describe it as a multisensory gastronomical experience. Since Vespertine first opened its doors in 2017, it’s been hailed as groundbreaking by critics and mobbed for reservations by intrigued diners.

Occupying a futuristic, latticed four-story tower, which appears to be undulating and hums with its own muted musical score, Vespertine offers a multi-course tasting menus whose dishes are so sculptural in presentation they’re not easily identifiable as food. Many incorporate surprising flavor combinations (scallops with smoked bone marrow, salted plum, and burnt onion) and rarefied ingredients like giant kelp, madrone bark, coastal redwood, wild yucca, and coastal halophyte plants. Nearly every guest lucky enough to dine here has agreed: a meal at Vespertine is alluring, baffling, and like no other in the world.

When to go: Anytime, but with advance booking only.

Copenhagen.jpg

Copenhagen: Dinner as Theater

The world’s most talked-about and over-the-top dining experience right now is the 50-course, outrageously operatic tasting menu served at Alchemist , chef Rasmus Munk’s Copenhagen restaurant.

Appropriately occupying a former set-building workshop of the Royal Danish Theatre, where bioluminescent imagery is projected above diners in a planetarium-style dome, the restaurant has been described as something akin to haute-cuisine-meets-Burning Man. A team of 30 chefs, along with a team of costumed dancers and actors, lavishes their attention upon just 40 guests per night, creating marvels of molecular gastronomy (employing foams and cryogenically frozen components) and culinary camp (a course of lamb’s brain comes coated with a cherry glaze). A meal here may not be for the faint of heart—but it is unforgettable.

When to go: Anytime, but with far-in-advance booking only (the waitlist is typically months’ long).

Mexico.jpg

Photos courtesy of Rosetta

Mexico: In-Depth Culinary Tour

From its time-honored home-cooking traditions to its fine-dining restaurants, Mexico is a country with remarkably diverse—but uniformly delicious—cuisine.

Explore these gastronomic delights on a private, 10-day culinary journey from Oaxaca to Mexico City with Artisans Of Leisure . The itinerary invites guests to explore regional farmers’ markets, where they can sample local produce, chocolate, and cheeses; private cooking classes, where they can learn to prepare specialties like mole poblano ; tastings of street-food favorites like cemitas and tacos; and reservations at some of the country’s highest-end restaurants, like Mexico City’s Rosetta. The trip includes stays at luxury hotels, as well as cultural excursions to archeological sites, like the Great Pyramid of Cholula, via private car.

When to go: Between September and May, when temperatures are typically between 60° and 80°F and rain is minimal.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

Bhutan.jpg

Bhutan: Private Sanctuary

Famed for its remote Buddhist temples and fortress-like dzongs (monasteries) perched high among the peaks of the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan has long drawn travelers seeking spiritual retreat. Only recently, however, have visitors to this breathtaking country been able to combine their exploration with opulent modern comforts.

At Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary , the level of luxury attains new heights. Opened in 2018, this boutique resort set high in the Neyphu Valley treats its guests to peerless “inspirational hospitality”—including guided hikes and monastery visits; daily meditation, yoga, and mindfulness sessions; a serene spa offering traditional Himalayan wellness treatments; a lavish farm-to-table restaurant; and plush rooms whose private terraces offer sweeping views over the surrounding mountains.

When to Go: Either in autumn (September to November), when skies and clear and temperatures aren’t too cold; or spring (March to May), when wildflowers bloom along the mountainsides.

Maldives.jpg

Maldives: Underwater Hotel

Comprising 26 different coral atolls and more than 1,000 individual coral islands, the Indian Ocean nation of The Maldives is home to one of the most astoundingly diverse marine ecosystems in the world. Some 2,000 fish species—including manta rays, moray eels, and whale sharks—make their home in the crystalline waters here.

At the private-island resort of The Conrad Maldives , a truly unique new lodging option allows travelers to experience this underwater wonderland beyond snorkeling and diving trips. The resort’s one-of-a-kind Muraka residence, a two-level bungalow whose glass-walled and glass-ceilinged master suite sits 16 feet below the surface of the ocean, surrounds lucky guests with unparalleled all-around views of the vivid natural aquarium outside. Muraka guests also enjoy a plethora of extravagant perks, from a palatial private deck with an infinity pool to a 24-hour dedicated butler and private chef.

When to go: Between November and April, during the region’s dry season.

Chile.jpg

Chile: Desert Stargazing

At the base of the Andes Mountains in the northernmost reaches of Chile, the Atacama Desert is the world’s premier stargazing destination. The region’s extreme dryness, altitude and freedom from light create near-perfect viewing conditions—which is why the globe’s most extensive astronomical observatories are located here.

Even amateur cosmologists, however, can experience the thrill of charting the night sky here—thanks to the exclusive stargazing tours offered to guests of the Atacama’s most luxurious boutique property, Awasi Atacama . By day, each guest at the 12-room lodge can arrange bespoke excursions to see volcanoes, geysers, llama herds, and ancient petroglyphs with a private guide and 4x4 vehicle. By night, astronomer-led trips to Awasi’s dedicated observatory reveals the celestial wonders above.

When to go: Anytime. Throughout the year, skies here are relentlessly clear, with daytime temperatures around 70-80°F and nighttime temperatures around 30-40°F.

Jet Journeys.jpg

Russia - Private Travel

Packed with Imperial palaces, domed cathedrals and superb museum collections, the historic cities of Russia cast a seductive spell.

East Russia offers the perfect off-the-beaten-path escape, particularly for nature-lovers hoping to catch sight of the famous black bears.

The pull of its fascinating history is what draws visitors to Russia, lured by the grand architecture, modern cities, luxury hotels, bucolic countryside and the stoic pride of its people. Moscow is the economic, cultural and political powerhouse, and the capital city since the 15th century. Beginning with the famous Red Square, you run the gamut of incredible architecture masterpieces and iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Kremlin and its cathedrals have come to be the visual cue of the nation’s image, as has Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Private luxury tours will take you down pedestrianized Arbat Street with its shops, restaurants and street performers and along Tverskaya Street for some upmarket shopping. The Tretyakov Gallery – the most visited in Moscow – is the supreme spot for absorbing classical Russian art. Many visitors to Moscow also manage the Golden Ring, a route through nine ancient towns in the northeast that have managed to hold onto their 14th-century flavour. Sites here are mainly religious – UNESCO-listed cathedrals and monuments. The cities include Ivanovo, Kostroma, Pereslavl-Zalesskiy, Rostov, Sergiev Posad, Suzdal, Uglich, Yaroslavl and Vladimir. St. Petersburg – founded by Peter the Great and commemorated by countless artists and writers – is a seaside paradise. It was only founded in the early 1700s – fairly young compared to some of Eurasia’s other significant cities. Thrillingly, it is Russia’s cultural heart, filled with art museums, opera houses and ballet stages. The State Hermitage Museum is the largest in the world at more than 700,000 square feet, its 120 rooms visited by one million people every year. A visit to Russia isn’t complete without a taste of the fresh air. The Russian countryside is primarily made up of rolling, treeless plains called Steppes. Four climates zones make for an interesting melange of plant and animal species, not to mention the various sporting activities: skiing in Rosa Khutor, mountain climbing in Caucasus, white-water rafting Altai Republic and hiking around Lake Baikal.

#TheLIST: The World's Most Extravagant Experiences–And Why They're Worth It

From vacationing on a private sandbank in the Maldives to glamping above sea level in Canada...

When you think of the world’s most lavish experiences, it’s no doubt that mega yachts, private transfers and traditional decadence immediately come to mind—but we'd argue that true luxury is instead defined by the exclusive access to some of the world’s most prized gems. The ultimate in luxury entails experiences so transformative that you cannot help but to leave them a changed person. From the far flung, remote Himalayas to the Rococo splendor of Paris, true luxury takes you to new heights, granting unheard-of insight into new perspectives, cultures, landscapes, cuisine and, even, landmarks. Whether it’s inhaling crisp mountain air in Canada at a luxurious camp set up 4,500 feet above sea level, or exploring the Komodo Islands in an antique, iconic yacht, these incredible experiences all offer a unifying theme: once in a lifetime. Here, the most lavish experiences worth planning the world over.

An Ultra-Luxe Sailing Experience in the Komodo Islands

Body of water, Nature, Sky, Coast, Water, Sea, Natural landscape, Mountain, Lake, Bay,

This luxurious experience is perfect for intrepid families. Cruise around the remote Komodo Islands on a lavish, antique vessel sleeping up to 14 travellers, the Dunia Baru . This unique vantage point allows travelers to experience the very best of these islands with a plethora of tailor-made experiences to boot, from hiking volcanoes with photography experts to diving lessons in remote coral atolls without a soul in sight. Inside tip: start each day with paddleboard yoga and conclude with a night dive, where the sea is positively luminous. This lavish experience has something for everyone, and for cultural immersion, a must is a village visit to learn traditional weaving (even taking a stab at it yourself). It wouldn’t be a trip to the Komodo Islands without getting up close and personal to the mighty Komodo Dragons; while hard to spot, you’ll have the best guides on hand to track these majestic, prehistoric creatures. And while you're up for adventure, swimming with whalesharks here is pretty memorable as well.

Private Flying Safari Overlooking South Africa

Water, Vehicle,

You’ve likely heard the oft-repeated sentiment “it’s the journey, not the destination." It sounds cliché, but on a private flying safari over Southern Africa, there’s no more fitting description. Taking off from Namibia’s Atlantic Coast and soaring over rolling plains, thundering waterfalls and sprawling deltas to reach the sun-dappled waters of the Indian Ocean, this is an African adventure like no other. For those who’ve always wanted to do Africa and to do it in style, this is the answer. Not only will you take in Namibia’s famous deserts, Botswana’s luscious Okavango Delta, Zambia’s exclusive savannah, Malawi’s turquoise waters and Mozambique’s coral islands, but you’ll do it all with the most incredible view imaginable up in the air. Imagine following herds of migrating wildlife over never-ending plains, and it's easy to understand why this is one of the most unique safari experiences out there.

A most marvelous way to experience Christ the Redeemer in utter seclusion and luxuriously is a private, romantic picnic breakfast at the feet of Christ the Redeemer as you watch the sunrise over Rio and the breathtaking Sugar Loaf Mountain. Total privacy, convenience and unparalleled seclusion make this one of the world’s most lavish experiences.

Why Go To Moscow

Moscow's opulence and high culture is a sight to be seen. Forget what you learned about Russia in grade school. This lavish capital of a formerly communist nation has fully embraced the luxuries, excesses and decadence of Western capitalism. Like many former Soviet countries, Mother Russia struggles to successfully confront issues of widespread poverty, alcoholism, failing healthcare, and environmental protection. But Moscow has burgeoned into one of the most expensive, exclusive and largest travel destinations in the world. It comes complete with world-class museums, magnificent palaces, $1,000-a-night hotels, "face-control" nightclubs and internationally-renowned restaurants. Don't think you can afford Moscow? Don't be afraid. You can still find affordable deals if you are vigilant. This metropolis has a big and bold character and grandiose setting that's definitely worth getting to know.

Moscow Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Moscow is April and May, when the temperature creeps into the 50s and 60s, the sun begins to shine for significant portions of the day, and hotel rates have yet to skyrocket into peak ranges. Of course, the golden period is summer, when the city is warm and bustling. But if you want to (slightly) spare yourself from the perpetually expensive rates, try the shoulder seasons in the spring and early fall. Preferably spring, since fall experiences more rainfall and less sunlight. Winters are brutally cold, but this is when you'll get a true glimpse into the Moscow experience (A frost-bitten walk through Red Square seems to intensify the historical significance of this great capital city).

Weather in Moscow

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

A little Russian English is spoken only in major hotels and restaurants, and you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the less tourist-heavy areas. American visitors also struggle with the Cyrillic spellings and pronunciations. Practice some key Russian phrases on the long flight over.

A little tipping Unlike most other European cities, tipping (five to 10 percent) in restaurants is the custom.

A lot of vodka This Russian drink of choice (yes, they usually consume it straight) is found at any bar. But if you wish to taste it and learn about its origins, the Moscow Distillery Cristall is your best bet.

How to Save Money in Moscow

If it seems too good to be true It probably is. Take that proverb to heart in Moscow, and don't expect the Czarist medal you purchased off a street vendor to be worth anything more than a good memory.

If you're oblivious on the subway You'll probably leave several rubles lighter. Pickpockets prey on unsuspecting foreigners in crowded places, particularly metro cars. Beware!

If you're not scared of the dark You may be able to handle Moscow's long nights in fall, winter and spring, when hotels offer the lowest rates. December sees an average of 18 hours of sunlight … in total.

Culture & Customs

English is spoken in major hotels and restaurants, but you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the less tourist-heavy areas, such as at the market or in small inns. Some helpful Russian greetings include the informal hello (pronounced, pri-VET ); the formal hello ( Zdravst-vwee-tye ); the informal goodbye ( pah-KAH ); and the formal goodbye ( Dah svih-DA-nee-ye ). To thank someone, say " Spas-EE-ba ."

What to Eat

Traditional Russian fare focuses on hearty meat dishes and cold soup, a particularly Russian specialty. But don't arrive in Moscow thinking you'll experience only the old cuisine. Russia's new personality has been accompanied by a lavish taste for international cuisine, especially Asian food. Sushi and Asian fusion restaurants are among the most popular in the city, and other dining options include American and Italian cuisine. Eating out, like everything in Moscow, can be very expensive, but you can find cheaper restaurants in shopping centers and areas outside the city center.

Stay alert for pickpockets when using public transport and when visiting the main tourist sites. Many an unsuspecting traveler has been relieved of some rubles on the Moscow Metro and near Red Square. Also, make sure to exercise extra caution when leaving bars and clubs at night.

There have been cases of corrupt police asking for random fines -- if this occurs, get the officer's number and name and ask to go to the police station with him or her.

Getting Around Moscow

The best way to get around Moscow is the metro. Faster and more efficient than the trolley buses and trams, this extensive system has stations that contain beautiful ornamentation, sculptures and mosaics. You could rent a car, but it's best to use public transportation to avoid the city's perpetually congested roads. Plus, street signs are all in Russian. In fact, English signs are nonexistent in the public transit system as well, so it's best to quickly get familiar with a map. Most travelers arrive through Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), but there are several other airports that serve the metro area. Several buses and a metro line shuttle airport travelers to and from downtown.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Acquiring a visa to travel in Russia is a bit more complicated and expensive than visiting other countries. Every foreign traveler entering Russia must have a Russian-based sponsor (like a hotel, tour company, university or relative). In addition to a valid U.S. passport, you must also obtain a travel visa from a Russian embassy or consulate prior to arriving in Russia. If you plan to stay in Russia for more than seven days, you have to register your visa and migration card (the white paper document given by the border police on first entry to Russia) with the Federal Migration Service. Visas can cost anywhere from $160 to $250 per person, depending on the length of your stay. For more information on entry and exit requirements, visit the U.S. State Department website .

Red Square is one of the most famous squares in the world.

Guest reviews, this was a bucket list trip of a….

This was a bucket list trip of a lifetime for us. TCS far exceeded any and all expectations. All the personnel in the office, at each of the sites, on the tours, and in the air were professional, courteous and friendly. Everything about the trip was just over the top and we will likely go on another of their spectacular itineraries in the near future!

This Around-the-World by Private Jet…

This Around-the-World by Private Jet excursion will be my first journey with TCS World Travel. My initial encounter was with Rachael, who is extremely personable, knowledgeable, and accommodating. She was very patient in answering many questions and offering suggestions and guidance. I look forward to the next stage of planning for the exciting excursion.

Superb people making the trip wonderful

The Best of Africa is the Best

Great itinerary, great expedition team, great plane and crew, wonderful accommodations and exceptional service throughout makes for the Best of Africa.

What an amazing journey

What an amazing journey. Every step of the way was perfectly organized and stress free thanks to TCS. The trip, the jet, the staff, the hotels and restaurants were all top shelf everywhere we went. Fabulous experiences with great people. We will definitely be travelling again with TCS

This once-in-a-lifetime trip is the perfect way to spend quality time with your partner or to treat yourself to an adventure you’ll never forget. Adults of all ages take our trips, sometimes with a companion and sometimes by themselves. You will meet fellow guests with a curiosity about the world and come away with unforgettable memories and special friendships. It can also help you memorably mark a special occasion, whether it’s an anniversary, birthday, retirement, honeymoon or other milestone.

The minimum age to take our expeditions is 12, but we will consider younger guests on a case-by-case basis.

Shortly after booking, your guest services manager will email you more details about your trip. This dedicated professional will be your main point of contact. He or she will provide you additional information leading up to your departure and is available to answer any questions via phone or email.

Prior to departure, you will receive a set of amenities for your trip. These may include a wheeled bag, a backpack, packing cubes and other useful travel items.

Our trips are a unique opportunity for like-minded travelers who are interested in learning and exploring to come together. The strong friendships forged on our trips continue long after guests return home and open the door to more travel adventures.

On expeditions with 48 or more travelers, daily activities will be divided into intimate groups of 6 to 12, so you never feel like you’re part of a crowd. On all trips, we offer numerous activity options at each destination such as: guided small-group sightseeing, curated shopping, and exclusive visits to museums and landmarks. Other examples include more active options like hikes or snorkeling, as well as unforgettable moments like an intimate guided exploration of Angkor Wat and our hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti.

TCS World Travel is committed to maintaining the quality and safety of the expedition for all participants. Overall, our trips give you the freedom to set your own pace. Each destination on every itinerary offers a variety of options with different activity levels. In some, you may only be walking for short periods of time and have more downtime between excursions, while in others, you may spend the entire day touring or walking over uneven terrain. You may, of course, choose to have a day off and relax at any location.

On all our expeditions, you can expect the following:

  • Uneven ground/frequent walking up to one mile at any given time
  • Walking up the steps to the jet, as many foreign airports do not have jetways
  • Trip pace—only one to three nights in each stop with some late-night activities and early-morning departures
  • Time zone changes
  • High altitude (some expeditions)
  • Changes to your ‘normal’ routine: unique cuisine, frequent packing/unpacking

We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate participants with special needs; however, we cannot accommodate wheelchairs or walkers. If you require a slower pace, extra assistance, or the use of a cane or walking stick, arrangements can be made for private touring at each destination. Any extra cost for such arrangements will be the responsibility of the participant.

Trip Pace Definitions

These icons refer to the overall pace of the trip and not to specific activities at each destination. For example, an expedition classified as moderate or relaxed in overall pace can still offer active options such as hiking or snorkeling.

  • Active Pace: Almost every day fully scheduled, and/or longer flight durations; expedition crosses multiple time zones
  • Moderate Pace: Downtime opportunities every three or four days, and/or shorter flight durations; crosses fewer time zones
  • Relaxed Pace: Many opportunities for relaxation, and/or three-night minimum stays in most destinations

Destination Safety

Before TCS travels to any destination, we vet it for safety. We and our consultant medical advisors, Dr. Thomas Burke  and the BostonMD team, closely monitor all health situations. We monitor the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), the US Department of State, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and other third-party destination experts, and are consulting with our trusted local suppliers to evaluate travel to all locations featured on our expeditions.

The beauty of private jet travel is the ease of pivoting. If we need to change an itinerary for any reason, we can use our contacts in countries worldwide to assist us with making alternate arrangements for our group. These changes could be made well in advance of arrival or even while we are in the air en-route to a given location.

On-Trip Resources

On many expeditions, a trip physician will be available to consult with you at your request about general medical health issues such as upper-respiratory infections or gastro-intestinal upsets, which are not uncommon on this type of trip. Should you become seriously ill en route, the trip physician will be able to liaise with local physicians at your request and, if necessary, your medical providers back home, to assist in determining what further care you may require.

On-Trip Activity Level

This is an active program which requires a serious health assessment. There will be walking excursions at nearly every location, and you will need to climb stairs at some of the sites, as well as when you board and disembark the aircraft. There are some airports where you will be responsible for transporting your small wheeled overnight bag. We will have some early-morning departures and late-night activities, and may travel through multiple time zones.

To help counterbalance the carbon footprint that results from flying, starting in 2023 TCS World Travel is investing directly in measurable and meaningful sustainability projects that reduce the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere while positively impacting local communities and protecting local biodiversity.

Our luggage allowances are based on the type of aircraft on which the expedition is offered. On the custom Airbus A321, luggage typically is limited to two checked bags: the wheeled bag we mail you and one additional large suitcase of your own. On expeditions on smaller aircraft like the Fokker 70, guests are allowed the wheeled bag we mail you and one additional smaller bag due to weight restrictions. Bags will be stored in the hold of the jet during our flights, but you will be allowed to take your backpack and another small personal item, such as purse or camera bag, along with you in the cabin.

On many trips, a dedicated expedition staff member handles your luggage throughout the journey. In many destinations, our staff will transfer your luggage directly from the plane to your hotel room. In others, you may be required to walk your bags through customs before handing them over to our staff, but we take over from there. Secure vehicles accompanied by a dedicated expedition staff member are used to transfer luggage between the airport and the hotel on arrival and departure. Often times, your bag is in your room by the time you’re checked into the hotel.

We suggest you bring comfortable clothing that can be layered. One of your most important items is a pair of comfortable shoes for walking. Our guests generally dress up a little for the welcome and farewell dinners, but this is their choice and is certainly not required. Also, you will find slightly more formal dining options at many of the hotels where we stay. For this reason, you may want to bring a few nicer outfits. A more detailed packing list with specific clothing recommendations will be sent to you closer to the departure date. While you’re packing, please keep in mind that laundry services are available at most of our hotels. We also recommend you leave extra space in your suitcase to bring home souvenirs of your journey.

TCS World Travel is committed to safeguarding the security of its guests on every expedition. The company has implemented a set of security processes throughout the journey – from before guests depart to when they touch down in a destination. These processes have been fine-tuned over two decades and more than 300 private jet expeditions and thousands of custom trips to help ensure peace of mind for everyone involved.

All guests must have valid passports to participate in this program. Passports must be valid at least six months beyond the end date of your expedition. If visas are required for the expedition, a visa kit will be sent to you approximately between 6 and 3 months prior to departure depending on destination requirements. We work with an expediting service that helps make getting your required visas easier. Although you’re still required to fill out your visa forms and cover the application costs, they will review the application to make sure it’s complete and liaise with the necessary consulates and embassies to process your visas.

We pre-fill your customs and immigrations forms at every stop—all you have to do is sign. Where possible, our guests enjoy special privileges, such as expedited customs and immigration formalities. We may have a dedicated customs counter for our group and are occasionally allowed to go through without individual clearance.

The price of your expedition incorporates large items like the jet, hotels, transportation and meals, but it also includes many other things, such as activities, top-of-the-line guides, private dinners in restaurants, beverages and every single tip (guides, restaurants, hotel staff, drivers, etc.). In addition, we give you some “walking around money” in the local currency at each stop. We also supply you with all the bottled water you can drink all day every day. We even provide you with postcards that we mail for you—all you have to do is write.

Your expedition includes:

  • Travel on a privately chartered jet
  • First-class accommodations
  • Ground transportation
  • All meals and beverages, including select beer, wine and spirits aboard the jet and group lunches and dinners
  • All sightseeing activities, from guided small-group excursions and private shopping to more active options such as snorkeling and hikes
  • Special events and private access
  • Top local guides and/or on-trip experts
  • A veteran expedition team who handles all logistics
  • On some itineraries, a trip physician who accompanies you throughout your journey
  • All gratuities
  • Luggage handling

Your expedition does not include:

  • Commercial airfare between your home city and departure/arrival destination
  • Optional and additional accident/baggage/cancellation insurance
  • Passport and visa fees
  • Personal expenses such as laundry, telephone and fax fees
  • All beverages not mentioned above as included
  • Hotel minibar charges
  • Meals not scheduled by TCS World Travel
  • Inoculation and medication costs of any kind

*Aircraft operated by Titan Airways Limited.

Reservation Process

To reserve your place on the Tour, you must complete and sign the Reservation Form and pay your deposit. The deposit can be made by wire transfer or by a major credit card such as American Express, Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card. To cover the cost of processing a credit or charge card transaction, and pursuant to applicable state regulations (including, with respect to Colorado, section 5-2-212, Colorado Revised Statutes), TCS charges a surcharge of 3.0 % for credit card payments. This surcharge is not greater than our merchant discount rate for credit card transactions and does not apply to payment via debit card, ACH or check or redemption of a gift card, or to credit card payments with a billing address in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Puerto Rico. Your place on the Tour is not reserved until the deposit and signed reservation form are both received.

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your reservation or change your plans, your right to receive a refund is limited, as set forth in the trip payment schedule. All cancellations will become effective as of the date of the postmark or email receipt. All requests for refunds must be sent to TCS World Travel in writing via mail, fax or email.

If you are traveling solo and prefer the privacy of your own room, you will be charged a solo traveler supplement. This ensures that individual travelers will get the same type and size rooms as our double occupancy travelers.

The Jet tour is operated by TCS World Travel, dedicated to delivering immersive, worry-free travel experiences for the globally curious and modern luxury traveler. The aircraft is operated by Titan Airways, an IOSA-certified airlines with over 30 years of experience in bespoke air charter travel.

We strongly recommend purchasing insurance to protect your travel investment. We offer a best-in-class trip insurance program available exclusively to guests on our group jet expeditions. Our program provides unique benefits that you won’t find anywhere else in the insurance market, including:

  • Insurance for your entire trip cost in a single streamlined plan
  • The ability to purchase the plan and waive pre-existing conditions any time up until final payment
  • COVID-19 coverage, with the option to cancel before your trip departs
  • Flexibility to pay in installments and insure your trip as you go

Our insurance program also includes these additional benefits for your peace of mind:

  • No-risk guarantee allowing you to cancel your plan within 10 days and receive a full refund
  • Coverage for trip cancellation/interruption, baggage loss, emergency dental and more
  • Option to add on Cancel For Any Reason (“CFAR”) coverage for up to 75 percent of your trip cost

If you would like a personalized quote, or have any questions about our insurance program, please contact our Guest Relations team at 800.454.4149.

Global health institutions like the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are now categorizing COVID-19 as an endemic disease, similar to other infectious diseases we live with daily. In response to this changing global scenario, most countries have now relaxed or dropped their COVID-19 vaccine and testing regulations – so TCS has adapted our policy as well.

  • While we highly recommend that guests be vaccinated, we are no longer requiring vaccines for guests to travel on a TCS group jet expedition, unless it is required by one of the destinations on the program.
  • There will no longer be required testing for COVID-19 either prior to trip start, at trip start or during your journey, unless it is required by one of the destinations on the program or recommended by the trip physician for treatment support.
  • We will ask any guests who are exhibiting symptoms of illnesses (such as colds or flu) to mask when they are around other guests, helping to reduce transmission and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. We look forward to embarking on an extraordinary journey together as travel gradually returns to normal. Please reach out if you have any questions.

7 of the most BEAUTIFUL churches in Moscow (PHOTOS)

exclusive world travel

1. St. Basil's Cathedral

exclusive world travel

The most beautiful church, probably not only in Moscow, but in the whole of Russia. According to experts, its appearance has shaped the aesthetic preferences of many generations of Russians (that's why we love bright and colorful things so much!). Officially, this 16th-century church is called the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God. And only one of the nine chapels inside the cathedral is dedicated to Basil the Blessed.

2. The Assumption C athedral of the Moscow Kremlin

exclusive world travel

This church was built in the 15th century by Italian architect Aristotle Fioravanti. And his name is known to every Russian schoolchild. It is believed that this main cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin is the oldest fully preserved building in the capital. And it has been a witness of great history, because, in it, the crownings and coronations of Russian monarchs were held.

3. Christ the Savior Cathedral

exclusive world travel

This 19th century Russian-Byzantine style church became infamous as a symbol of the Soviet government's fight against religion. In 1931, it was blown up and an outdoor swimming pool was built in its place. In the 1990s, the cathedral was reconstructed according to the original project and, now, it is officially the main cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church and the largest Orthodox church in Russia.

4. Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye

exclusive world travel

According to legend, Russia's Grand Prince Vasily III built this church in honor of the birth of his heir, future Tsar Ivan the Terrible. And this is the first stone tent-roofed church in Russia. Before it, only wooden tent structures of this type were built. It is one of the oldest churches in Moscow, a true masterpiece of the 16th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

5. The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fili

exclusive world travel

This church was built by Lev Naryshkin, Peter the Great's maternal uncle, on his estate in the district of Fili (then outside Moscow). The emperor, by the way, presented colored stained-glass windows for the church and donated a considerable sum for its construction. Now, this architectural masterpiece of the late 17th century is considered one of the most striking examples of the Moscow, or "Naryshkin", Baroque style.

6. St. Clement's Church

exclusive world travel

One of the most beautiful churches in Moscow is also a real symbol of Zamoskvorechye, a district south of the Kremlin, where foreign merchants used to come. The church is dedicated to the Holy Martyr, a Roman Pope St. Clement I, which was considered the patron saint of all those traveling by water. The church acquired its present form in 1769, rebuilt from an older church at the expense of Zamoskvorechye merchants. It is another beautiful example of the Baroque style.

7. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Khamovniki

exclusive world travel

This 17th century church resembles a large gingerbread house. The architectural masterpiece is referred to the style of Russian patterning, because of the abundance of colored decorative elements and arches and ‘kokoshniks’. The church is dedicated to one of the most revered saints in Russia, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. But, believers also flock to it to worship the main relic, the icon of the Mother of God ‘The Redeemer of Sinners’. A separate side chapel is dedicated to her.

World’s top climate scientists expect global heating to blast past 1.5C target

Exclusive: Planet is headed for at least 2.5C of heating with disastrous results for humanity, poll of hundreds of scientists finds

  • ‘Hopeless and broken’: why the world’s top climate scientists are in despair

Hundreds of the world’s leading climate scientists expect global temperatures to rise to at least 2.5C (4.5F) above preindustrial levels this century, blasting past internationally agreed targets and causing catastrophic consequences for humanity and the planet, an exclusive Guardian survey has revealed.

Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), foresee at least 2.5C of global heating, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit would be met.

Many of the scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck.

Numerous experts said they had been left feeling hopeless, infuriated and scared by the failure of governments to act despite the clear scientific evidence provided.

“I think we are headed for major societal disruption within the next five years,” said Gretta Pecl, at the University of Tasmania. “[Authorities] will be overwhelmed by extreme event after extreme event, food production will be disrupted. I could not feel greater despair over the future.”

But many said the climate fight must continue, however high global temperature rose, because every fraction of a degree avoided would reduce human suffering.

Peter Cox, at the University of Exeter, UK, said: “Climate change will not suddenly become dangerous at 1.5C – it already is. And it will not be ‘game over’ if we pass 2C, which we might well do.”

The Guardian approached every contactable lead author or review editor of IPCC reports since 2018. Almost half replied, 380 of 843. The IPCC’s reports are the gold standard assessments of climate change, approved by all governments and produced by experts in physical and social sciences. The results show that many of the most knowledgeable people on the planet expect climate havoc to unfold in the coming decades.

The climate crisis is already causing profound damage to lives and livelihoods across the world, with only 1.2C (2.16F) of global heating on average over the past four years. Jesse Keenan, at Tulane University in the US, said: “This is just the beginning: buckle up.”

Nathalie Hilmi, at the Monaco Scientific Centre, who expects a rise of 3C, agreed: “We cannot stay below 1.5C.”

The experts said massive preparations to protect people from the worst of the coming climate disasters were now critical. Leticia Cotrim da Cunha, at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, said: “I am extremely worried about the costs in human lives.”

The 1.5C target was chosen to prevent the worst of the climate crisis and has been seen as an important guiding star for international negotiations. Current climate policies mean the world is on track for about 2.7C , and the Guardian survey shows few IPCC experts expect the world to deliver the huge action required to reduce that.

Younger scientists were more pessimistic, with 52% of respondents under 50 expecting a rise of at least 3C, compared with 38% of those over 50. Female scientists were also more downbeat than male scientists, with 49% thinking global temperature would rise at least 3C, compared with 38%. There was little difference between scientists from different continents.

Dipak Dasgupta, at the Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi, said: “If the world, unbelievably wealthy as it is, stands by and does little to address the plight of the poor, we will all lose eventually.”

The experts were clear on why the world is failing to tackle the climate crisis. A lack of political will was cited by almost three-quarters of the respondents, while 60% also blamed vested corporate interests, such as the fossil fuel industry.

Many also mentioned inequality and a failure of the rich world to help the poor, who suffer most from climate impacts. “I expect a semi-dystopian future with substantial pain and suffering for the people of the global south,” said a South African scientist, who chose not to be named. “The world’s response to date is reprehensible – we live in an age of fools.”

About a quarter of the IPCC experts who responded thought global temperature rise would be kept to 2C or below but even they tempered their hopes.

“I am convinced that we have all the solutions needed for a 1.5C path and that we will implement them in the coming 20 years,” said Henry Neufeldt, at the UN’s Copenhagen Climate Centre. “But I fear that our actions might come too late and we cross one or several tipping points .”

Lisa Schipper, at University of Bonn in Germany, said: “My only source of hope is the fact that, as an educator, I can see the next generation being so smart and understanding the politics.”

Breaking news, i donated my kidney to my hero of a mom — now she can travel the world.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Joe Marie donated her kidney to her mother Theresa. Here they are pictured at Theresa's retirement party.

A daughter who considers her mother to be her “hero” came to her mother’s rescue by giving her mother her kidney.

“I was just one month short of retirement when I got sick,” 64-year-old New Yorker Theresa Bullicer told The Post.

Bullicer, a mom of three and a grandmother of nine, worked as a nurse for 42 years before her planned retirement in November 2022. However, just weeks shy of her farewell from St. Barnabas Hospital in The Bronx, she was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, hospitalized and placed on emergency dialysis, something she would need to have three times a week.

The mother and daughter said that the experience brought them closer together and that they plan to travel together.

“I asked the doctor, ‘Do I have to be on dialysis for the rest of my life?’ He said, ‘Yes, unless you get a kidney,’” Bullicer recalled.

Matching with a kidney donor may have taken five to 10 years. Instead, her daughter donated a kidney nine months ago “without hesitation,” Bullicer said.

“Faith is very important to both of us, so I was just crying out to God, ‘How can I help my mom?’” Bullicer’s daughter Jo Marie Palazzo, a 43-year-old nurse at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, told The Post. Palazzo has four children, one of whom is also a nurse.

“ I felt my husband was encouraging me and was supportive of me doing it. And so I was like, ‘Let’s go find out if I’m a match,’ because, if I can help my mom and help her … it’s like a gift of life, right?” she added.

The process

In order to give a kidney, potential donors must be tested to see if they are the right match for the recipient as well as whether they are healthy enough to give.

“Generally the main criteria is blood type matching,”  Dr. Dustin Carpenter , an organ transplant surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell who performed Bullicer’s surgery, told The Post.

He said that the hospital is sometimes able to transplant organs from a person with a different blood type but it requires a “more complicated immunosuppression regimen,” so it’s ideal if the blood type is the same. Once found to be a blood type match, donors undergo extensive health testing.

“We make sure that if they donate, it’s under the safest circumstances possible and that they have no untoward risk,” Carpenter explained.

Both Jo Marie and Theresa are feeling healthy after the surgery.

“We make sure that their renal function is basically perfect, so that they donate safely. You know, people can live a long and healthy life with only one kidney and not even really have any changes to their lifestyle or to their length of life,” he added.

Carpenter said that the surgical procedure lasts three to four hours.

“We have to make three new connections usually,” he said of the surgery to add a kidney.

“One is to the artery, which is what brings blood to the kidney. One is to the vein, which brings blood from the kidney back to the rest of the body. And then, a final connection is between what’s called the ureter and the bladder. That’s what allows the person to urinate again and to clear the urine that gets built up from filtering the blood,” he explained.

He said that people are generally hospitalized for around four days following the transplant and that they are fully recovered after around three months.

Bullicer said after her surgery, her tests came back normal and she was already feeling much healthier.

“I walked around the first day of surgery and I was discharged after the third day … I have doctor visits, but I feel so much better,” she said.

Mom is her hero

Palazzo said that seeing her mom healed after donating her kidney to her was “one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Prior to her mom getting sick, “we were already in the process of planning her retirement party because we were so happy that she worked for so hard for so long that she was finally going to be able to, you know, travel the world and enjoy her life,” Palazzo explained.

“She immigrated here from the Philippines by herself before my dad. My brother and I were left in the Philippines so she could build a life here and prepare for us to come,” Palazzo explained.

The transplant has given Theresa a chance to lead a normal life.

“While she was doing that, she sent all her siblings to nursing school in the Philippines so that they could have a better life in America as well,” she continued.

Her mom worked multiple jobs so that Palazzo and her two siblings could all go to private school, college and nursing school. Today, there are 15 nurses in their family.

Palazzo said it crushed her when she found out “my mom, my hero, isn’t going to be able to enjoy her retirement like she had planned.”

Traveling the world

After retiring, Bullicer planned to travel the world and go island hopping in the Philippines with her college classmates.

Her kidney disease put a damper on her plans — but luckily it was only temporary. She and her daughter already had the opportunity to explore the world together in February.

“We’ve been traveling together. We just came back from the Philippines [where we were] for a month,” Bullicer said. She plans to go back in June — and her travel plans don’t end there.

Palazzo said that when she was growing up she and her mother used to watch and listen to “The Sound of Music” together.

“So we are planning to do a ‘Sound of Music’ tour in Austria,” she said.

The mother and daughter went to the Philippines in February and Theresa plans to return in March.

Live donation benefits

“We are the busiest living-donor program in New York,” Carpenter said of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.

A major reason he advocates for living donation, meaning the organ comes from a living family member, friend or stranger as opposed to a deceased person, is that “the average lifespan for a living donor transplant is twice that of a deceased donor.”

Another plus is “it shortens that period of time that people have to wait and oftentimes, you can get someone transplanted before they’re on dialysis,” he said.

Donating an organ to someone in need can also be a bonding experience — something Bullicer and Palazzo experienced firsthand.

“ I think this experience has definitely brought us closer … We’re just so thankful,” Palazzo said.

How to become a donor

There are over 89,000 people on the waiting list for kidney transplants and “dozens of people die every day waiting for a transplant, because there’s always a continued organ shortage.”

He said he would encourage people to be organ donors due to the shortage and because it’s a “very safe operation.”

“People can live a normal life, you know, after donating, with basically no restrictions,” Carpenter said. “We’ve had people that have run marathons within six months of donating. We’ve had people climb Mount Kilimanjaro.”

Palazzo also urged others to consider saving a life.

“If you feel that tug in your heart … go for it,” she said. “You are giving somebody a chance to live a full life again.”

‘A Gentleman in Moscow' production designer Victor Molero on creating the show's labyrinthine set [Exclusive Video Interview]

In Amor Towles 's novel "A Gentleman in Moscow," the story's central location, the Metropol Hotel in Moscow, is described as having "rooms behind rooms and doors behind doors." So when it came time to create the elaborate set required for the novel's television adaptation, production designer Victor Molero was given no easy task – especially because finding an appropriate location in northern England, where the show was produced, proved impossible.

"We needed to recreate this location and the timing was tight. So I did the research in 10 days and used another 10 days to design the hotel set," Molero tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. "So it was really stressful. But we did it. I always say that the real Metropol Hotel in Moscow was built in five years. We built the sets for ‘A Gentleman in Moscow' in five months."

Based on Towles's best-selling book, "A Gentleman in Moscow" is about a Russian count (played by Ewan McGregor ) who is sentenced to life under house arrest following the Russian Revolution. That puts the count inside the Metropol Hotel for years and makes the location one of the limited series' main attractions.

"It's really a stereotype to say that the hotel is like another character, but in this case, it is completely like another character," Molero says. "It was really a challenge in a way because the hotel was crucial in telling the story of the count."

Molero built detailed sets for "A Gentleman in Moscow," including the count's bedroom and other areas within the residence. But he says he's perhaps most proud of his work in the hotel's lobby, the bustling open space with one piece of furniture tied directly to the character: a bench

"When I was thinking how to create the lobby in a hotel, it's like a station. People go in and out all the time. And the count is there, he's waiting for something," Molero explains. "So it came to me, that image of the count waiting on that bench for what will happen with his life. And that is an element that I added. You try to play with this element in the space to give a layer to the story and the character."

Molero has received acclaim for his work on the show, but there is one review that stood out to the longtime production designer: a stamp of approval from Towles himself, who came to the set during the first week of production.

"When he arrived and he looked around, to see his face was the most special moment in my career," Molero says. "He was our father in a way, the one that created the whole thing. So it was a really special moment to see his reaction."

"A Gentleman in Moscow" is streaming on Paramount+ With Showtime.
