Port of Estepona (Malaga, Andalusia)

Estepona, on the world-famous Costa del Sol, conserves all the charms of a typical Andalusian town, with its peaceful squares bedecked with colourful flowerpots and little white houses. It is also a holiday resort offering all the latest modern amenities, golf clubs and sporting and recreational areas.

Its 21 kilometres of coastline are home to a number of beaches that have been awarded the European Blue Flag. Highlights include the areas along the seafront promenade and the marina (which every Sunday is the site of a street market offering traditional products and arts and crafts). Right in the centre is the beach of La Rada, the perfect place for a dip.

The lovely old town centre fits the classic image of Andalusia, with restored streets of whitewashed houses, crowded with pots of bright flowers. There are several art routes around the town, such as the Murals Route, with over 40 works of art, the Sculpture Route, with over 30 pieces by different artists, and the Poetry Route, with works in several languages. Notable buildings include the Clock Tower, the 18th century church of Los Remedios, and the former San Luis Castle. Also worth a visit are the megalithic necropolis of Corominas, the original bullring, the Plaza de las Flores, Casa del Aljibe (home of the Archaeological Museum), and the Botanical Gardens and orchid house.

Estepona’s numerous restaurants run the gamut from traditional Mediterranean dishes to innovative, international cuisine. We recommend the salt-baked fish, 'fritura malagueña' (mixed fried fish platter) and char-grilled sardines.

Nature, sport, and countryside

Nature lovers will enjoy a side trip to the S ierra Bermeja natural park , where they can climb the Pico de los Reales (1,449 metres) for views over the western Costa del Sol, the Rock of Gibraltar, and the north coast of Africa. Estepona is also home to several golf courses, the Costa del Sol School of Equestrian Art, and the Selwo Aventura leisure park, where over 2,000 animals live side by side in semi-freedom. Another worthwhile excursion just a few kilometres away is to Manilva, which has seven kilometres of beaches along its coastline. Nearby is the historic-artistic site of Casares, presided by the church of La Encarnación and the Torre de la Sal tower. Continuing on along the coast you'll come to Marbella, one of the most important holiday resorts on the Costa del Sol, and Fuengirola, a town boasting a profound Andalusian heritage with magnificent beaches.

Overview of Estepona

With an population of 70,000, Estepona is one of the few coastal towns that has succeeded in maintaining its pueblo charm and character. Notwithstanding, all the tourist facilities are here, including hotels, restaurants, leisure and cultural activities, and shops.

The numerous street cafes and tapas bars still serve traditional Spanish delicacies. In the 'old town' the steep, narrow streets are pedestrianised and decorated with different colour flower pots.  It is a delight for photographers.  You will find bars and small shops in Estepona, where you'd least expect them, all very inviting and friendly.

Planning a trip to Estepona? Here are our top picks...

Stay : Hotel Casa Veracruz

Guided tour : Estepona Old Town

Experience: Estepona Bay sunset cruise

Watch : Flamenco Show

Day trip: Gibraltar

Estepona is a traditional Andalusian town on the sun-kissed Costa del Sol in Southern Spain. It has the perfect summer combination of sandy beaches and well-serviced resorts, while still retaining much of the authentic character of the old Pueblos Blancos - white villages.

While it may have gotten some bad (drug-related) press a few years ago, its reputation has quickly recovered - and for good reason. With a blend of traditional Andalusian character and modern amenities, Estepona offers a unique Spanish experience away from the usual tourist crowds.

The town is earning its name as one of the most popular hotspots on the Costa del Sol, so don't be tempted to skip Estepona and head straight for Marbella (the more popular option). Not only is Estepona less busy and touristy than Marbella, but you also get much better value for money. Here are just a few more reasons why you should add Estepona to your Costa del Sol itinerary.

Flowers in red pots in Estepona's old town

1. Estepona's Old Town is incredibly charming

The historic centre in Estepona surpasses all expectations with its charming Andalusian village vibes that transport you back in time. Imagine wandering through a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, white-washed houses adorned with colourful flower pots, and charming plazas.

You can explore the narrow and tranquil lanes, smell the flowers, stop by a fountain and take a break at a local tapas bar. Two top historic locations in the old town that you should check out are San Luis Castle and Plaza del Reloj town clock.

Estepona is known as the ‘Garden of Costa del Sol’, and in the old town, you can easily see why. No street is left without a beautiful flower display, and colourful pots decorate the walls of each home, bodega or shop. The pots are also colour-coordinated, so one street is a display of blue pots, then the next is filled with pink pots, and so on...

Estepona’s old town is the perfect place to wander around, admire the scenery and sit down for a drink with a view. If you only have one day to see Estepona, you should definitely spend it in the old town!

The entrance to the Estepona orchidarium

2. You can see orchids from around the world

The Orchid House in Estepona, also known as El Orquidario by the locals, is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the town.

The large collection of plants housed inside boasts an impressive display of 5,000 specimens and over 1,300 orchid species sourced from all around the globe. You can marvel at a stunning waterfall tower at 17 meters as well as traverse your way through a vertical garden designed to showcase the rich diversity of plant life.

Whether taking a peaceful stroll or seeking more knowledge on unique orchid varieties and their captivating traits, this spot is an ideal destination for nature lovers.

The exquisite Orchidarium sits right in the heart of Estepona's historic centre and is easily accessible for vistors. Admission fees are €3 for adults, and €1 for children aged 4-11 years.

Visit their Facebook page for information about upcoming events, concerts or exhibitions.

3. Estepona has incredible street art

Art enthusiasts will certainly be mesmerized by the stunning murals in Estepona. These captivating pieces of street art are on display all around the old town, on sides of apartment blocks and reach impressive sizes.

The 'Mural Route' is a collection of over 50 large-scale murals, beautifying the buildings across the town. The highlight is the largest mural in all of Spain, sprawled across six towering apartment blocks. An arrow painted on the sidewalk of the first block guides you to the perfect vantage point for capturing this monumental piece of art with your camera.

As you meander through Estepona, you'll encounter many unique murals, each one a testament to the town's creative spirit. This initiative has not only revitalized neighbourhoods but also encourages exploration off the beaten path. The art is diverse, ranging from abstract to hyper-realistic, each telling a unique story.

You can book one of the dedicated street art walks with a local guide, or simply pick up a map from the local tourism office and check off all the street art locations on your own.

4. The beaches in Estepona are uncrowded

Spain is a country with beautiful beaches, but during peak season, popular destinations can get very crowded. For those seeking a quieter experience in the sun, Estepona is an excellent option.

The towns is relatively unknown to tourists and is a welcome respite from the crowds in other coastal cities. Even during summer months, Estepona's popular Playa Rada beach is less crowded than those found in other Costas combined.

Located just a short stroll from the heart of the old town, this beach area has a row of lively chiringuitos and seafood restaurants, making it a popular spot to indulge in local cuisine. Estepona also has a unique coastal promenade with has bars and restaurants along one side, and colorful flowers and benches perfect for taking in the breathtaking views of the beach on the other.

Several beaches in Estepona are well worth visiting. La Rada, mentioned above, is a Blue Flag beach located within walking distance from the town center. This long stretch of sandy coastline caters to families with its abundance of sun loungers, exceptional lifeguard services, and a variety of beach bars serving fresh seafood delicacies and refreshing cocktails.

Families with young children looking for a great beach option can head to Playa del Cristo. The beach is perfect because it features warm, shallow waters and gently sloping sand. It's also in a protected cove making it ideal for families. There are two lively chiringuitos located on the beach that often play live music on the weekends, adding to the overall experience.

Playa Bahía Dorada is a long beach on the western side of town. Strolling along the shoreline is made easy thanks to its well-developed promenade, which also adds to a car-free environment. For those seeking variety, nearby options include Playa Costa Natura, a nudist beach, and Playa El Cristo with a picturesque cove and two fantastic chiringuitos (beach bars).

5. Estepona's marina is a hub of activity

The Marina Puerto Deportivo de Estepona is worth visiting even if you aren't into sailing. Just take a stroll along the marina, soak up the atmosphere and admire the sleek yachts docked there - and, of course, the gorgeous views.

The marina is also known for its vibrant nightlife and restaurant selection - all with stunning views! Thee restaurants and lively bars serve a range of cuisines, perfect for a seaside lunch or a romantic dinner under the stars.

The Sunday market held at the marina is a must-visit, teeming with local produce, crafts, and clothing from local businesses.

The Marina is also the departure point for sailing tours , fishing trips and dolphin-spotting excursions. So if you’re looking for water sports or boat rentals in Estepona, the marina is a great place to go.

6. Estepona has excellent beach hotels

Estepona is a great option if you're looking for luxury accommodation. There are several 5-star hotels in town, making it an excellent alternative to the popular Marbella.

Ikos Andalucia is one of Estepona's finest 5-star hotels, situated on the peaceful shore of Playa de Guadalmansa. Guests can explore and enjoy endless miles of unspoiled beaches here - it's a real paradise and perfect if you want to switch off and relax. The hotel also has more than 21 acres of manicured gardens and offers numerous leisure activities.

If five-star hotels aren't your thing, you can also choose to stay in one of the charming boutique hotels located in Estepona's Old Town area for a more authentic experience. The Hotel Casa Veracruz is a favourite, housed in a beautiful building with an Andalusian-style patio and close to the beach and restaurants.

Malagueta Beach in Malaga on a sunny day

7. You can explore the Costa del Sol from Estepona

There is enough to do in Estepona to keep you busy for a long time... That said, if you want a change of perspective, there are plenty of other towns in the region just a short distance away.

Gibraltar makes an excellent addition to your travel itinerary and only 45 minutes' drive from Estepona. The charming town is a fascinating fusion of British and Spanish cultures that is well worth seeing for yourself.

The major attraction is, of course, the renowned Rock of Gibraltar, which dominates the skyline andis home to a tribe of wild Barbary macaques. If you don’t fancy a drive in a car, or using local transport, you can book the Estepona to Gibraltar day tour from a local travel company at a very affordable price.

You also can't leave the Costa del Sol without visiting its sunny capital - Malaga . Birthplace of Picasso (and Antonio Banderas), home to the ancient Alcazaba, Roman Theater and Gibralfaro Castle, Malaga has so much to offer even for a day trip!

You can get to Malaga from Estepona easily using public transport or by booking a day tour with a local travel company.

Estepona 3 day itinerary, Tapas

There are three things you can always count on in this town: the temperature in Estepona is perfect more than 300 days a year, there’s always buen rollo (good vibes), and the tapas are delicious!

Casa del Rey : Delight on a great assortment of tapas at the Casa del Rey in Calle Rafael , a tiny side street just off Plaza de los Flores .

With its cozy indoor patio sporting a decorative mural of a tree, the restaurants’ casual chic visuals will spur the appetite for seafood crepes, shared platters of Jamon Iberico , and other specialties.

El Toque: On the other side of town, close to the Puerto Deportivo (Estepona’s harbor), you’ll find the El Toque restaurant in the Calle Guadiaro .

Translated, “ el toque ” means “the touch” – and boy do they have that special touch when it comes to quality and beautifully prepared tapas.

From gourmet burgers to fish wraps, you can’t go wrong with any of the choices on the menu.

Visit Dolmenes de Coromínas (Archaeological Museum)

Estepona 3 day itinerary, Dolmenes de Coromínas

This underground museum chamber situated in Los Pedegrales is home to five original dolmen stones.

To this day, no one is completely certain why they were built or what purpose they served, though most archeologists believe they were funeral structures, i.e. tombs of some sort.

Estepona was one of the first resorts to attract foreign residents and tourists almost 50 years ago and, despite the surrounding development, the centre of the town still has a cosy, old-fashioned feel. There's good reason for that: Estepona’s roots date back to the 4th century. Centuries later, during the Moorish era, the town was an important and prosperous centre due to its strategic proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar.

Ten Top Things To Do in Estepona, Andalusia

Estepona is easily one of my top favourite places in Andalucía – so much so that I actually convinced my parents that it was an ideal place to move to! Estepona is a small city that is ideal for a getaway, whether for a weekend, a week or even longer, or a place to visit as part of a larger trip in Andalucía. There are so many things to do in Estepona and every time I visit I always discover more places! This is a selection of my top things to do in Estepona and recommendations for spots that you just can’t miss when you visit.

Ten Amazing Things to do in Estepona, Spain

What's In This Article

Explore the Centro Histórico

The Centro Histórico, or old town, of Estepona is my favourite part of the city. Admittedly, I am a total sucker for narrow calles lined with colourful flowerpots and brightly painted balconies. There are so many beautiful little streets that are the perfect spots for photos or just for exploring and enjoying the views.

In order to make the most of exploring the Old Town, I would recommend starting either at the northern or southern end and working your way through the town. You can make the most of stopping off in cafes, restaurants and bars on the way!

The streets of Estepona, Andalusia are lined with houses with whitewashed walls and brightly coloured flowerpots on their walls. This shot shows a narrow street in the city with bright red flowerpots overflowing with blooming flowers, contrasting with the whitewashed walls of the houses and the bright blue summer sky.

If you’re starting from the southern end of the city, I would recommend walking from Avenida San Lorenzo and up Calle Chorro (which I always misread as Calle Churro…), a beautiful street lined with vibrant pink flowerpots. At the end of Calle Chorro, you will reach the Museo Arqueológico de Estepona . This museum is located in an elegant yellow building that was constructed in the 19th-century and originally housed the town hall. Entrance to the museum is free and, as well as the archaeological exhibits dating back to 5,000 years ago, you can enjoy the beautiful Andalusian interiors.

From here, you will pass the Torre de Reloj (Clock Tower) as you head towards the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios , located in the Plaza de San Francisco. This is also where you’ll find the start of the Ruta de la Poesia, or the Route of Poetry.

You can then head to the Plaza de las Flores , which is a beautiful central square. It is also where you’ll find the Casa de las Tejerinas , an 18th-century building that was a charity hospital for the poor. The central patio is surrounded by columns and a balcony with aches. Casa de las Tejerinas also contains the tourist office and the Garó Art Collection.

After visiting the Plaza de las Flores, follow various streets such as Calle Antero or Calle San Miguel . Calle Caridad is a beautiful street lined with a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. One of my favourite streets in the city is Calle Concepción , a narrow street where the whitewashed houses are decorated with blue flower pots.

The streets of Estepona are full of flowerpots with in bloom flowers, taken care of by the homeowners. The wall of this house is decorated with red flower pots, some with white spots, and full of red flowers.

Visit the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios

While exploring the old town of Estepona, you shouldn’t miss taking a peaceful break at the Parroquia – or Parish Church – Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. The church originally formed part of the old convent of the Terciarios Franciscanos (Franciscan friars), which was constructed at the end of the 18th-century. It was used by the Friars until 1835, when the monks left due to the Disentailment Law.

The celebration of the Virgen de los Remedios Onomástica, or Saint’s Day, takes place annually on the 15th August and is usually celebrated with a procession through the streets of Estepona. Semana Santa (Holy Week) is also marked with a big celebration at the church and holds an important role during these Easter celebrations as it is where the images of the Brotherhoods of Santa Maria de los Remedios, el Captive and la Veracruz are venerated.

The church’s façade combines multiple styles of architecture, with a Baroque stone front with Marian, Franciscan and colonial elements. The style is considered to be somewhat similar to many Hispano-American churches.

The bell tower is topped with a pyramidal roof with blue and white glazed tiles, an iconic part of Estepona’s skyline that you can spot from many places around the city.

The bell tower of the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, Estepona's main church, is visible from various different streets in the old town. Here the bell tower peeks out above the houses on the street, with the bright yellow brick of the tower and the blue and white tiled roof standing out amongst the whitewashed houses.

See the Torre del Reloj and Castillo de San Luís

The Plaza del Reloj is home to the Torre del Reloj – an easily named place to remember, the Clock Tower in the Clock Square. The Torre del Reloj is another part of Estepona’s skyline that is easy to spot from various places around the city, with its rounded red and white tower.

In the spring and summer, the square is surrounded by beautiful flowers blooming all along the walls. The clock tower itself dates back to the 16th century, when it was part of the old Church of Los Remedios. An earthquake in 1755 destroyed the majority of the church, leaving only the tower still standing. The even older origins of the tower date back to Moorish times, when it functioned as a minaret.

Next to the Torre del Reloj are the ruins of the Castillo de San Luís . Here you will also find the Mercado San Luís , or Mercado de Abastos, which is a great spot to enjoy some of Estepona’s gastronomy.

The Castillo de San Luís dates back to the early 16th-century, when the Catholic Monarchs (Ferdinand and Isabella of Aragon and Castille) ordered its construction. The castle was built in order to defend the Spanish citizens of the city against Berber pirates from North Africa. Only some parts of the castle walls still remain, but heading to this area to check out the parts that do remain is definitely something to do when in Estepona.

The castle was also built in order to replace the former fortification of the city, which was Arab of origin. The name ‘Estepona’ actually comes from the Arabic name for the settlement, and has nothing to do with the word ‘este’ or ‘east’ as I had originally assumed. The city’s name is believed to have originated from the Moorish/Arabic name ‘Estebbuna’ (also written as ‘Istibbuna’ or ‘Astebbuna’), dating all the way back to the Caliphate of Cordoba in the 10th century.

Follow the Poetry Route through Estepona

The Poetry Route, or Ruta de la Poesia , is a beautiful route that takes you on a winding journey through Estepona’s charming and fairytale streets. The route incorporates verses of poetry from various poets, including both Spanish and foreign poets. It’s great fun to see what you can find and, if you aren’t fluent in Spanish, how much you can understand!

Currently, the Poetry Route has 39 different plaques around the city with verses from poets such as the Andalusian poet Ángel Garcia López, Polish poet and Nobel prize for Literature winner Wisława Szymborska, French poet and novelist Victor Hugo, as well as many, many more.

The tourism office of Estepona has a handy flyer for following the Ruta de la Poesia , or you can just see which ones you stumble upon in your exploration of the city! The Poetry Route is easily one of the best things to do in Estepona, whether you do all of it or just a few parts.

Marvel at the street art on the Ruta de los Murales

While much of Estepona appears very ‘quaint’ and traditional, the city also has an incredible array of street art scattered throughout. I have seen some seriously impressive street art around the world and Estepona is definitely up there in the top!

The city is home to more than 60 murals , including brand new ones painted just last year. The largest mural in Spain (and in Europe, I believe!) can even be found in Estepona. The mural Día de Pesca , or Day of Fish, is an incredible 1,000 square metre mural that is spread across six façades. You need to stand in just the right spot to get the perfect shot of the entire mural – it’s definitely a feat to achieve but it is possible!

The idea of a route of murals began in 2012 and the route was inaugurated in September that same year. By 2013, there were 10 different murals and the number increased significantly in 2014 and 2015. In 2017, an international contest was held in Estepona and sponsored by the La Caixa foundation as well as the Ayuntamiento (town hall) of Estepona. 11 new murals were created and presented as part of the competition, including from Spanish artists such as Lalone and Dadi Dreucol and international artists such as Mina Hamada.

By 2018, the official route had expanded to 45 murals, and is now at 62. March 2020 saw the second International Contest of Murals in Estepona and artists from around the world took part, including those from Russia, Brazil, and South Africa.

Just like with the Ruta de la Poesia, the tourism board of Estepona has a downloadable brochure so you can locate the various murals , as well as learn the names and the artists! You can visit just a few, such as the many located close to the Orchid House, or you can try to see them all during your visit!

Personally, I believe that the Día de Pesca by José Fernández Ríos can’t be missed (Barriada Isabel Simón), as well as the beautiful flower murals that surround the Orchid House and nearby streets.

Around the area of the Orchid House, you will find multiple murals, such as this flower mural that looks like a pencil sketch the entire facade of a building.

Admire the Orchid House and Botanical Gardens

Estepona’s Orchid House or ‘ Orquidario ‘ is the largest orchid collection in Spain and one of the biggest collections in Europe. Whatever time of year you visit, you will see a spectacular flowering display!

The building itself is eye-catching, with three huge glass domes, reaching 30m, 16m and 6m high respectively. The Orchid House is home to 5,000 plants and 1,300 species and the building even houses a 17m high waterfall ! The Orquidario has a variety of different environments throughout, including tropical and rocky environments.

Inside Estepona's Orchid House you will find a beautiful 17m-high waterfalls, which cascades down into a pool below. The waterfall is surrounded by lush, tropical green plants and there is a small bridge crossing the pool it flows into.

You can take yourself on a self-guided tour of the Orquidario in Estepona, with explanatory plaques on the route in both English and Spanish. There is a small entrance fee charged to visit, only €3 for adults and €1 for children. I didn’t manage to visit on my first trip to Estepona since I didn’t know the opening times – don’t make the same mistake!

The Orchid House is open from Monday to Sunday 11am – 2pm, and Sundays to Thursdays it is also open from 5pm – 9pm. Friday has longer afternoon opening hours, from 5pm until 11pm! Don’t try and visit on a Saturday afternoon like I did, though, since the Orquidario is only open from 11am – 2pm and is closed during the afternoon.

The Orchid House truly is a must-visit in Estepona so don’t miss out on a visit to this spectacular gem!

The Orquidario Estepona is a unique building with three massive glass domes, one of which is seen here peeking out over the trees of the surrounding gardens.

Meander along the Paseo Marítimo

Estepona has a beautiful Paseo Marítimo, possibly better known to most English speakers as a promenade . The promenade stretches for around 3km, all the way from Estepona’s marina and almost up to (but definitely not including) Carrefour Hypermarket. Walking the entire length of the seafront would take you around 30-40 minutes, or longer if you’re like me and are always stopping constantly for photos. Taking a walk along the promenade is definitely something you can’t miss in Estepona.

Better still, explore a little bit of the seafront and the promenade at a time and make sure you enjoy a few breaks at a chiringuito , a classic Spanish beach bar or restaurant. You will find chiringuitos dotted throughout Andalucía and, of course, Estepona has some excellent ones! Some chiringuitos will only be open during peak season, while others are more permanent and open year-round.

The promenade is especially pleasant to wander along on a spring or summer’s day, preferably when temperatures aren’t TOO high. It’s a great way of seeing a bit of seafront Estepona, especially when punctuated by breaks for delicious fresh fish, seasoned and marinated tomatoes, or even a glass (or jug, I’m not judging) of sangria. Many chiringuitos also serve good coffee, perfect for when it’s just a little early in the day for some vino !

Walking along the Paseo Marítimo is one of the best things to do in Estepona. You will find multiple chiringuitos, or beach bars, along the route, such as Chiringuito Paco. The boardwalk from the restaurant leads down through the sand and ends a few metres before the sea. Each side, straw umbrellas shade beach loungers.

Go café hopping through Estepona

For a relatively small city, Estepona has a great concentration of good spots to get your caffeine fix. Whether you’re looking for a simple café con leche or you’re hoping for a steaming pot of chai, Estepona definitely has you covered.

Two of my favourite cafes are located very close to each other: Cafe de Theresa and Honoré. Cafe de Theresa , run by a lovely Dutch lady, is a small cafe where you can enjoy an excellent café con leche and also try one of her salads or sandwiches. I highly recommend a slice of the apple tart with cream, it’s definitely my favourite thing to have! Delicious. Honoré Pastelería is a French-style patisserie with lots of fresh bread for sale, as well as great coffee and a huge selection of pastries.

If you’re looking for a pot of chai, Tolone Bar and Cafe is the best place! They make a big teapot of chai for you and it’s absolutely delicious.

A large traditional teapot of chai sits on a tray with a cup at Tolone Bar Cafe, one of the best cafes in Estepona.

Visit a chiringuito (or two)

As I mentioned above when wandering along the Paseo Marítimo, you can’t visit an Andalusian seaside gem like Estepona without visiting at least one chiringuito . While you probably can’t go wrong with just visiting whichever takes your fancy, my personal favourite for a refreshing drink and the tastiest cazón en adobo has to be Chiringuito Paco , located on the beach opposite Avenida Juan Carlos I and Avenida San Lorenzo.

Other popular chiringuitos along the seafront include Chiringuito El Madero, Lio Beach, and Chiringuito África (which has, you guessed it, decent views of Africa).

You can't miss out on visiting a chiringuito when in Estepona! Chiringuito Paco is shown here, a large beach hut on the beach with tables covered with umbrellas to keep them shaded. A boardwalk runs down from the cafe onto the sand.

Eats lots of fresh fish and seafood

Aside from anyone vegan, vegetarian, or allergic, if you’re in Estepona then you have to try the amazing fish and seafood. The same goes for the entirety of Andalucía, in all honesty, but certain locations along the coast are prime for the best fish.

Some of my favourite dishes from restaurants around Estepona include cazón en adobo (my two favourite places being Chiringuito Paco and Los Rosales), fried calamares (calamari), boquerones and so much more.

If you’re looking to enjoy some of the best fresh fish or seafood in the area, then Los Rosales , Chiringuito Paco , Restaurante El Pescador and Restaurante La Escollera (arrive promptly around 8pm – it’s popular!) are excellent bets for a delicious meal.

Estepona has many beautiful cafes and restaurants, including this chiringuito on the beach that is surrounded by green palm trees!

There is so much to do in this beautiful and charming Andalusian city and I could go on for even longer with things to do, places to go and spots for food and drink. If you are thinking of visiting, then these are definitely the top things to do in Estepona.

Where would you visit first?

Estepona is a seaside resort city of 67,000 people (2018) on the Costa del Sol in Spain . Remnants from prehistory have been excavated in Estepona. The Romans, Phoenicians and Moors left their mark on the city.

Estepona lies on the Mediterranean Sea with the Sierra Bermeja mountains over 1000 m high in the background. The beaches are 21 km long.

Estepona is one of the few coastal towns that has succeeded in maintaining its pueblo charm and character, despite the onslaught of tourism. Notwithstanding, all the tourist facilities are here, including hotels, restaurants, leisure and cultural activities, and shops.

The flip side is that the numerous street cafes and tapas bars still serve traditional Spanish delicacies and the steep, cobbled, narrow streets seem more suited to horses than cars. You'll also find unusual shops and bodegas in Estepona, where you'd least expect them, all very inviting, very friendly - and very cheap!

In addition to the old town of Estepona, a lot of urbanizations for vacationers were built in the fifteen years before the real estate bubble burst. Between the old town and the city limits of Marbella, the “New Golden Mile” was created along the Mediterranean Sea in competition with the “Golden Mile” of Marbella. The New Golden Mile includes the districts of Rio Padron, Villacana, Cancelada, El Saladillo, Benamara, Isdabe-Atalaya, El Paraiso. West of the old town towards Algeciras, the districts of Bahia Azul, Valle Romano and Buenas Noches emerged. Overall, the city now offers space for more than 100,000 residents.

The nearest airport is Malaga airport, more about flight arrival on the airport page. The journey time by car to Esepona is about an hour. From the UK, Estepona can also be easily reached via Gibraltar Airport.

Estepona is on the A 7 and AP 7 motorways, which connect the provincial capital Málaga with the port city of Algeciras on the Strait of Gibraltar. The Autovia AP 7 is a toll route. You can drive 120 km/h. The A 7, the former N-340, can be used free of charge. In the summer months there are traffic jams caused by accidents on the A 7 almost every day. There is often only one connection between neighboring towns on the Costa del Sol, the A 7.

Estepona has no rail connection. The nearest train station is in Algeciras.

From the bus station there are at least three daily connections from Algeciras to Madrid (9 hours) with Daibus and one night connection with Alsa on the coastal route to Barcelona (19 hours). There are direct buses from Malaga , Marbella and Algeciras . The bus station is between the marina and the town centre.

Regional lines serve Comes and Portillo.

There are three city bus routes (2018: €1.10-1.40):

  • 1 (minibuses) daily 07:30-21:30 every half hour: Urban. Beverly Hills (2 km west of the center) along the sea along Avenida del Carmen and Avenida de España to the American hamburger roaster at the motorway exit.
  • 2 daily 07:00-22:00 every half hour: between Estepona Puerto (in front of Edificio PuertoSol or Plaza de Toros) and the Urb. Mar y Monte. Numerous hotels are along the way.

Noteworthy are historical buildings such as the clock tower, watchtowers, the fortress San Luis Castle, and the church Iglesia de los Remedios at Plaza San Francisco.

Estepona

Estepona , in a privileged setting, captivates its visitors in every nook. Its refurbished old town, one of Andalusia's most beautiful, offers tourists the chance to enjoy a real urban garden, “The Costa del Sol Garden” .

Its labyrinth of white streets, adorned with picturesque flowerpots in bloom, give it the essence of a coastal Andalusian town. It conserves its customs and traditions in perfect, harmonious coexistence with its more modern, tourist appearance.

The Best Things to See & Do in Estepona

Estepona Guide and Tourist Information

Why Choose Estepona?

The Garden of the Costa del Sol

Estepona is known as the “Jardín de la Costa del Sol” thanks to it’s year round abundance of flowers displayed throughout the town, especially in the narrow, pretty streets of the historic Old Town. However there is much more to this charming Spanish town which is surrounded by the Mediterranean one one side and the Sierra Bermeja mountain range on the other.

Far away from it’s noisy neighbours in Marbella and Puerto Banus, Estepona aims to offer a different experience and way of life; long sandy beaches dominate the coastline, it’s old town invites you to get lost in it’s flowerpot lined streets, the avenues and plazas are filled as equally with bars, cafes and restaurants as they are with flowers and the friendly and relaxed people of the town.

Take a look below at some of Stay At Estepona’s top choices, including where to eat, drink and sleep in Estepona or click below for to view our blog for the complete guide to the prettiest town on the Costa del Sol.

Where to Eat, Drink and Sleep in Estepona

Estepona Port

Puerto Deportivo de Estepona

At it’s heart, Estepona is a fishing village and nowhere is this more obvious than the town’s fishing port and the neighbouring fisherman’s cottages.

Just a short walk from the town centre along the wide “Paseo Maritimo” next to the beach. Estepona’s port offers a wide variety of restaurants, bars & cafes as well as shops and services. It’s also home to Estepona’s popular Sunday Market as well as the heart of Estepona’s bustling late night scene.

The area before the lighthouse is home to charming old Fisherman’s cottages, adorned with flower pots and also home to the beautiful Nuestra Señora del Carmen, home to the statue of the Virgen del Carmen the town’s patron saint, which every year is taken out to the sea in one of Andalucia’s most iconic ceremonies.

The Estepona Murals

Ruta de Los Murales

The “Ruta de Murales Artísticos” has converted Estepona into a open-air gallery and museum by converting facades of buildings into giant creative and diverse paintings. There are over 50 murals in the town and the tourism department produces a map with an enjoyable walking route around various neighbourhoods of the town.

The Beaches

Estepona counts on 21km of coastline, most of which is lined with beautiful beaches. The main beaches in town and the most popular are Playa de la Rada and Playa del Cristo . La Rada runs along the beachfront promenade and is a wide beach with stunning views over to Gibraltar and Morocco, whilst the Playa del Cristo is located at the far side of the fishing port and it’s sheltered bay and shallow water make it the perfect family beach.

The other beaches stretch along the coastline in the direction of Marbella and include some of the area’s most popular beach restaurants or “Chiringuitos” where many an hour can be idylled or partied away right on the beach front whether in Summer or Winter.

With 320 days of sunshine a year, Estepona is a watersports lovers paradise and there are no shortage of rentals for Kayaks and Stand-up-Paddles as well as Kitesurf and Surf schools.

Outdoor Activities

A Natural Paradise

The proximity of Sierra Bermeja mountain range and it’s rivers offer a wealth of outdoor activities for those looking for a more energetic visit

The Rio Padron and Rio Castor make excellent spots to cool off in the rivers crystal clear water during the summer months. The area’s around the rivers are home to numerous Horse Riding schools and Stables . The trails into the mountains offer excellent opportunities for hiking and mountain biking and for the really adventurous buggy tours and paintball centres.

estepona tourist office

Estepona’s Red Mountain

Sierra Bermeja

The 1,449m high Sierra Bermeja provides a dramatic backdrop to the Estepona landscape with it’s red rocks that give it it’s name. The mountain is home to the rare and ancient “Pinsapo” or Spanish fir, found only in a handful of places in Spain and Morocco and an emblem of the area.

It’s very rare for mountains to reach this height, so close to the sea and the breathtaking views from the summit are truly some of the best on the whole Costa del Sol. There are numerous hiking trails in the area, ranging in difficulty and most are easily accessible .

Coastal Path / Beach Promenade

Senda Litoral / Paseo Maritimo

Estepona’s beachfront promenade, the “Paseo de Maritimo” goes from the Port of Estepona at the western end of town and runs east for 3km alongside the beach. Lined with beautiful and varied displays of flower and plants and overlooking the beach, it makes it the favourite spot for a Sunday afternoon stroll and for joggers.

Many of the towns most popular bars & restaurants line the route which also runs right past the main entrance to the Old Town and the main shopping streets.

The Paseo also compromises part of the “Senda Litoral” or Coastal Path which is a magnificent plant to connect 14 municipalities along the coast, from Manilva to Nerja and running for approx. 160km. For Estepona’s part, the Path is continuously being extended in both directions with beautiful wooden bridges crossing the many stream and river mouths.

The Ultimate Guide to Estepona Old Town

Estepona Old Town is the most charming historic centre in the Costa del Sol.

There’s beauty in every corner of this Andalusian town – its cobblestone streets, coloured coordinated flower pots, lively squares surrounded by plants and fountains in the middle and sculptures. All of these things are within a short distance from Estepona’s golden sand beaches.

Estepona is less than an hour from where I live, and it’s one of my favourite day trips alongside other small pueblos blancos (whitewashed towns) like Frigiliana.

I’ve compiled everything in this guide, whether you want to know what things you can do in the old town of Estepona or where to eat or stay. I’m sure you’ll love this coastal town as much as I do.

About Estepona Old Town

a pretty white building with flowers in estepona, spain

Estepona Old Town is considered one of the most beautiful old towns in Costa del Sol.

It’s referred to as the Garden of the Costa del Sol (Jardín de la Costa del Sol) because of the numerous flower pots and plants in the area; you can see anything from bright pink bougainvillaea to begonia flowers.

Besides being a flower paradise, it’s very well-kept and pedestrian-friendly.

Marbella Old Town is my favourite because of its cosiness and picturesque streets, like Carmen Street, but I must admit that the Estepona historic centre is second on my list.

It’s bigger than Marbella’s old town, and it’s home to charming squares with sculptures and fountains, street art and very well-maintained cobbled streets decorated with flower pots.

Calle Terraza is the main street in the area, and it’s here where you can find many independent shops, but there are many other great streets to stroll along.

Things to do in Estepona Old Town

What I love the most about the old town of Estepona is the wide variety of things to do – from seeing impressive murals and charming whitewashed streets to visiting its orchidarium.

These are the things you can’t miss during your time in Estepona:

1. Do a self-guided tour of the historic centre

A beautiful street in Estepona old town.

The first time I visited Estepona, I had no idea I could do a self-guided tour of the historic town.

You can simply head to the town hall website and download the map with the key locations to visit in the old town.

Each street is decorated with flowerpots of different colours (yellow, purple, etc.) and these flowers, against the neat white-painted buildings, make them so picturesque.

There’s an opportunity for photos in every corner.

If you prefer to explore the old town without following the suggested route, don’t miss these beautiful streets:

  • Calle San Antonio
  • Calle Concepción
  • Calle Sirena

2. Stop by Plaza de las Flores

plaza de las flores, Estepona, Spain

Plaza de las Flores (Flower Square) is the liveliest square in Estepona. It’s the meeting point for locals and tourists.

You can find plenty of tapa bars and cafes with outdoor seating surrounding this beautiful square filled with flowers. There’s nothing better than sitting down, enjoying a meal, and people-watching.

However, I wouldn’t miss out on visiting Casa de las Tejerinas inside Estepona’s tourist office. It isn’t a very big space, but you’ll be amazed by the pictures and exhibitions located on the second floor.

I love the patio and discovering more about the local artists. I feel like they aren’t always recognised, so it’s nice to see their pieces of art.

Another lovely square next to Plaza de las Flores is Plaza Dr. Arce. I had an orange juice with my partner in the outdoor seating of La Italiana and loved the atmosphere.

3. Learn more about Estepona by following the sculpture and poetry routes

a poem in the historic centre of Estepona, Spain

If you’re passionate about Spanish literature, that is another reason to love the historic centre of Estepona.

You’ll come across poems from well-known Spanish writers like Luis de Góngora and Rafael Alberti . There are over 42 poems across the old town for you to discover.

Some of these poems are specially written for the town.

Equally, if you like sculptures, you can follow the sculpture trail . You can see over 50 sculptures in the old town and surroundings.

4. See the Castle Ruins

castle ruins in the historic centre of estepona, spain

During your visit to the historic centre of Estepona, you might want to add Castillo de San Luis. There is little to see from this Medieval fortress, only part of the walls.

Ferdinand and Isabella of Aragon and Castile ordered the construction of this castle in the early 16th century. However, this one replaced the former Arab fortress.

Nowadays, you can see two different walls that belong to the different periods. Local archaeologists have tried to recover more of the castle, but they haven’t been very successful yet.

You can walk through one of the arches that leads you to the other side of the castle decorated with bright orange flowers hanging down walls and see Casa Cañada Square, home to a pretty tiled fountain.

5. Visit Estepona Orchid House

orchidarium estepona

El Orquidario de Estepona (Estepona Orchid House) is a short walk from the historic centre, and it’s worth adding it to your Estepona itinerary.

As its name suggests, it’s a botanical garden with a wide variety of orchids from around the world. I love that you’re surrounded by beautiful tall trees and flowers from the moment you step into the orchid house.

It personally didn’t take me very long to walk around it, but if you’re passionate about flowers, where they come from, what species they are, etc. You’ll probably spend an hour there.

However, whether you’re passionate about orchids or not, it’s a great activity to do, especially on a rainy day in Estepona (luckily, there aren’t many rainy days!)

6. Check out Plaza del Reloj

torre del reloj, estepona, spain

It’s a pretty quiet square compared to Plaza de las Flores as there aren’t any shops or restaurants around, but you can see a gazebo and the clock tower, which is very important for the locals as it has always been the main point of time reference. It marks the rhythm of time in the streets of the centre.

One of the best times to visit this square is on New Year’s Eve. The locals gather here to have the famous twelve grapes, watch the fireworks and enjoy live concerts.

Things to do near the historic centre of Estepona

  • Go to Playa de la Rada
  • Do water sports in the summer
  • Go on a dolphin-watching cruise
  • Sip a cocktail at one of Estepona’s best beach bars
  • Visit Puerto Deportivo de Estepona (aka the port)
  • Enjoy the views of the coastline at sunset
  • See the bullring and bullfighting museum
  • Do the mural route
  • Discover the dolmens

Where to eat in Estepona Old Town

MaduBar restaurant in Estepona, Spain.

⭐ Best for non-traditional food, a fusion of Mediterranean and Morrocan cuisine

MaduBar, located in Plaza Dr. Arce, is one of the best places to eat in Estepona Old Town. They serve a combination of delicious Mediterranean and Moroccan dishes – from chicken couscous and tagine to wraps and Pil Pil prawns.

📍 Exact location: Plaza Dr. Arce, 23, 29680 Estepona, Málaga, Spain

Restaurante El Cortijo

⭐ Best for local food

Restaurante El Cortijo Estepona is an excellent option for trying Southern Spanish food . You can eat anything from berenjenas fritas (fried aubergines) and porra antequerana (cold tomato soup with savoury toppings) to fried fish and meat.

The food is high-quality, the staff are very friendly, and the location is perfect, in the heart of Estepona’s old town.

📍 Exact location: C. Caridad, 64, 29680 Estepona, Málaga, Spain

Tahona de Chana

Tahona bakery in Estepona historic centre.

⭐ Best for a quick sweet snack

If you fancy something sweet, go to Tahona de Chana. The smell coming from the bakery is what made me stop and check it out.

They have incredibly delicious pastries and cakes, so it’s a paradise if you have a sweet tooth.

📍 Exact location: C. Terraza, 21, 29680 Estepona, Málaga, Spain

Where to stay in Estepona Old Town

There aren’t many accommodation options within the old town; however, one of the best hotels to stay in Estepona Old Town is Hotel Estepona Plaza.

Hotel Estepona Plaza

City view from hotel Estepona Plaza room.

The hotel is in the heart of the city, so you couldn’t get a better location, plus it is also a short walk from the beach.

There are three different types of rooms: standard, rooftop or city view rooms. All of them have simple and neat decorations, comfortable beds, ensuite bathrooms and WiFi.

By staying at Hotel Estepona Plaza, your breakfast is included in the fee too, so you don’t need to look for cafes.

My favourite room is the city view room as you get an amazing sight of the old town.

🛏️ Check out Hotel Estepona Plaza availability and rates here

Other fantastic accommodations located outside the old town are:

  • Luxury: Kempsinki Hotel Bahía
  • Mid-range: Hotel H10 Estepona Palace
  • Budget: Veranera Hostel

How to get to Estepona Old Town

estepona coach station

From Estepona bus station

The bus station is situated outside the old town; therefore, if you’re travelling from Malaga or any other beach town, bear in mind that you need to make your way to the historic centre.

I travelled by bus and then walked to the town from the bus station as it’s a nice and short stroll ( about 20 minutes). As you walk, you can admire the seafront.

From the port

You don’t need a car to go from the port to the town. The traffic isn’t always great, so I’d consider walking, which takes 25 minutes.
