‘A Different World’ Hits the Road to Help Historically Black Colleges

The beloved series was set at a fictional historically Black university. Now, cast members have reunited to visit and support real-life schools.

Picture a pampered socialite ostentatiously putting her generational wealth on display. Or an outspoken teenage activist leading a climate change protest. Or a charismatic opportunist luring people into his latest scam.

These descriptions apply equally to characters from “A Different World” — a sitcom that ran from 1987 to 1993 — and to today’s social media influencers. So it’s little wonder that the show, which streams on Amazon and Max, resonates with Gen Z.

The series began as a spinoff of “The Cosby Show” centered on Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet), and it became a hit in its own right .

“A Different World” broke ground by giving high visibility to an ensemble of aspirational Black young adults, following an eclectic cross-section of coeds attending Hillman College, a fictional historically Black university. There they dealt with typical collegiate growing pains — studying, partying, falling in love and stumbling into adulthood — and also with more serious subject matter, including racism, domestic abuse, gun violence, homelessness and mental health struggles.

“These things mattered, and these are issues which are still relevant today,” said Darryl M. Bell, who played the Hillman huckster Ron Johnson.

Now, more than three decades after the series finale, Bell and other core cast members, including Charnele Brown, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer and Glynn Turman, have reunited for a campus tour of historically Black colleges and universities . Their mission is to raise awareness and enrollment for such institutions, to establish a “Different World” scholarship fund and, of course, to give newer, younger fans a chance to see their parents’ hand-me-down TV idols in person.

“The kids can watch it on their phones,” said Hardison, who played Dwayne Wayne, a gawky math whiz turned professor. “They can really tap in anywhere — that has given us a whole different life with it.” The show premiered 37 years ago, he noted, “so to think that it’s still doing good work is a bit of a dream.”

Bell said, “There’s nothing new under the sun: Everything has its cycle, and it comes back and you find it’s new again.” (That sentiment certainly holds true for many of the show’s wardrobe staples, like oversize blazers, baggy denim overalls and bomber jackets, all of which are back in style.)

The spark for the tour came in 2016, when several cast members made an appearance at Norfolk State University in Virginia. In the years that followed, Bell courted potential backers to fund a full-fledged college tour. (Guy, who played Whitley Gilbert, the show’s resident diva, playfully calls Bell the “office manager” of the group.)

Getting the stars on board was relatively easy. “This is family,” Summer said. “The majority of us hang out on purpose .” Teaming up with Cisco and Wells Fargo, and the nonprofits Student Freedom Initiative and Minds Matter , Bell lined up six tour stops this year at schools like Spelman College in Atlanta, Howard University in Washington, D.C., and, later this fall in Alabama, Tuskegee University and Alabama State University; he hopes to schedule 10 more visits in 2025. The events are free for students, faculty and alumni, and Bell said the group is considering opening some events to the public because of demand.

Jaden Jackson, a senior at Tuskegee, has seen every episode of “A Different World” and recently started rewatching them, inspired by the tour announcement. “It’s a classic,” she said. “It’s a show I’ll never get tired of.”

“When people think of H.B.C.U.s, they already have a picture of the type of people who go there,” she said. “But it’s such a diverse group of people, and the show does a good job of encapsulating that.” She has a particular affinity for Summer’s free-spirited character, Freddie: “To see someone like me onscreen — who acted like me, who I would often be compared to — that really appealed to me and made me excited to go to my H.B.C.U.”

The tour kicked off in Atlanta on Feb. 29, with cast members giving talks at Spelman, Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College. Instagram posts from the events show crowds giving standing ovations, snapping cellphone photos and, at Clark Atlanta, greeting the cast with a marching band performance.

“The Spelman panel that we did at Sisters Chapel was off the chain,” Guy said. “I was shocked at their excitement, their verve and their vigor. I kept looking at everybody like, ‘Yo! They are treating us like rock stars or something. What is going on here?’”

Hardison likened the reception to an experience he had while accompanying his friend Lenny Kravitz on a concert tour of Japan in the late 1990s. “It took me back to when he went out onstage and the Japanese kids were screaming,” he said.

The Spelman chapel, which holds 1,000, was at capacity during the event, according to a spokeswoman. Helene D. Gayle, the president of Spelman, moderated a talk with the actors and a Q. and A. session afterward.

“When I first took on the role of president of Spelman, people would ask me, ‘What’s it like? How do you feel?’” Gayle said in an interview. “And I’d say, ‘Well, I feel like I am on the set of “A Different World” every day.’”

She said many of the students had heard of the show from older relatives and had watched it on streaming platforms. Adrian Crick, a Spelman freshman, said audience members were well versed in Hillman lore. One student serenaded the cast with her own version of the theme song.

“I hadn’t watched the show, but my mom said it’s an important cultural touchstone for Black people,” Crick said. “The level of production that Spelman, Morehouse and Clark put on for them indicated to me this is something to pay attention to, this is kind of historic .”

When the tour visited Howard last week, the campus was abuzz with “Hillman at Howard Day” activities, including step performances by fraternities and sororities and a fashion show in which students dressed as their favorite characters. (There were, of course, multiple pairs of flip-top sunglasses, Dwayne Wayne’s signature accessory.)

An estimated 1,400 attendees were at the main event at the school’s Cramton Auditorium, with many screaming and waving cardboard cutouts of the characters as the actors took the stage. Kim Coles, a star of “Living Single,” moderated a panel that included appearances by Karen Malina White, who appeared in the final season of “A Different World” (and was Miss Howard 1985), and by the “Cosby Show” actress Tempestt Bledsoe, who is Bell’s partner.

Sinbad chimed in via video and so did Debbie Allen, a Howard alumna who overhauled the series in its second season. Allen told the audience that “A Different World” mirrored her own college experiences and described the show as a vital voice for young Black America.

While the cast members were in Washington, they visited the White House to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris and appear in a video promoting the Biden administration’s student loan debt relief efforts .

Summer, who grew up in Canada, was unfamiliar with predominantly Black campuses before joining the cast at 18. She said getting the Hillman experience was the next best thing and now considers herself a champion of the schools.

“There’s a reason we’re on tour right now,” she said, noting that it was imperative to remind people that an H.B.C.U. “is an incredible place to get an education and an incredible place to secure and dive deeper into our culture.”

Gayle, the Spelman president, said that the Supreme Court’s 2023 affirmative action decision , which barred race-conscious college admissions policies, had made H.B.C.U.s even more indispensable.

“We’re at this moment where I think what we provide young people is perhaps more important than ever,” she said. “I hope that the tour can be part of that, as well — showing young Black people and their communities how important it is to be grounded in institutions that value them, that reflect who they are and reflect the excellence that is resonant within the African American community.”

'A Different World' cast reunites as HBCUs see a new peak in admissions

Interest in historically Black colleges and universities is surging.

For example, Howard University, among the nation’s top HBCUs, received a record 37,000 applications for its upcoming freshman class.

But this isn’t the first time Black colleges have seen a spike in interest. Though HBCU enrollment increased more than 25% between 1976 and 1994, according to the National Center for Education Statistics , a big leap in admissions coincided with the run of the college-set sitcom “A Different World.”

Premiering on NBC in 1987, the “Cosby Show” spinoff was set on the fictional Hillman College campus and ran for six seasons. Its majority-Black cast provided a bold injection of cultural flavor and a counter to many of the stereotypical depictions of young African Americans in the 1980s and early ‘90s.

Now, as the world of higher education continues to shift, the cast is coming back together to celebrate the show’s lasting legacy, 35 years after its premiere, with a tour of HBCUs across the country .

This explosion of interest is happening as racial strife continues to affect students’ lived experiences, alongside the undoing of affirmative action in college admissions; an attack on diversity, equity and inclusion programs; and student uprisings over America’s foreign policy.

“We tackled all the issues you see college kids attack, because it’s usually in college where you come into your own self-awareness,” Darryl M. Bell, who played Ron Johnson on “A Different World,” said in a recent interview.

Through the lives of its eclectic ensemble of characters — including the bougie Whitley Gilbert; the cool mathematician Dwayne Wayne and his charismatic girl-chasing best friend Ron Johnson; the free-spirit Freddie Brooks; the hardworking Kimberly Reese; the older “sister” of the bunch Jaleesa Vinson; and Col. Taylor, the tough-as-nails math professor and commander of the campus ROTC — the cast tackled some of the most pressing social and political issues of the day. From apartheid in South Africa and domestic violence to AIDS and police brutality, the show took elevating the voices of and issues facing young Black America seriously.

Fast-forward decades later to President Joe Biden’s commencement address at Morehouse College, where he praised the school’s history.

“The founders of Morehouse understood something fundamental. Education is linked to freedom. Because to be free means to have something that no one can ever take away from you,” Biden said, before announcing $16 billion in new investments for historically Black colleges and universities.

Still, in true historical fashion, a number of students at the commencement ceremony committed acts of silent protest, drawing attention to the country’s foreign policy and the U.S. government’s support of Israel’s bloody war in the Gaza Strip.

Some things change, some things don’t.

“We were protesting apartheid. … Kids were protesting apartheid and censorship on the radios, and now you have Black Lives Matter,” Bell said. “It changes over generations, but the struggle is always real.”

Earlier this year, the cast reunited for its HBCU tour to raise awareness about the institutions, establish a “Different World” scholarship fund and connect with a new generation of young, gifted and Black students.

Image: A Different World

It’s also the perfect opportunity, said Dawnn Lewis — Jaleesa on the show — to remind young Black Americans of their collective power.

“I think the point is to keep talking, to keep having the conversation, to let them know —  give them the permission to know — that they are empowered to have the conversation,” she said.

In the face of book bans and the rollback of DEI initiatives and ever-present racism Lewis urged, “you need to vote. You need to read. What’s happening in the world today is an all-out assault on the truth of history, on the rights that we have fought and earned. So you’ve got to know who is who and if for no other reason, vote for the future.” For more from NBC BLK, sign up for our weekly newsletter .

A Different World ran on NBC for six seasons, from Sept. 24, 1987 to July 9, 1993. The series, a spin-off from The Cosby Show , centered on Denise Huxtable ( Lisa Bonet ) and the life of students at Hillman College, a fictional HBCU in Virginia.

Bonet left the show after the first season, as did Marisa Tomei and Loretta Devine . Future stars who appeared on the sitcom included Jada Pinkett Smith and Karen Malina White, among others.

The show was consistently ranked first or second among Black viewers during most of its run, and is often cited as the defining reason as to why many decided to attend a HBCU.

That's part of the reason the cast from A Different World is getting together now. The tour will not just be a nostalgic trip down memory lane for the Different World family, but also a chance to raise money for scholarship funds. Per the website, Cisco and premiere finance partner Wells Fargo will sponsor the tour "ensuring that more students can access the transformative experience of HBCUs." "The cast of A Different World has come together to celebrate our 35 year legacy and make more history with today's HBCUs and tomorrow's leaders!" Darryl Bell tells PEOPLE.

"Our mission goes beyond nostalgia. We're on a quest to raise awareness and enrollment for HBCUs nationwide. By leveraging the star power and cultural impact o f A Different World, we aim to inspire a new generation to choose HBCUs as their academic homes," the website states. One by one several of the main characters of what many consider the best representation of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in television history made their way into the Marcus Bar & Grille on Wednesday night.

Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown and Glynn Turman were at the Old Fourth Ward restaurant for a tip-off dinner for a national HBCU tour in honor of the impact that iconic NBC television series, “A Different World” had on generations of Black youth.

For many people, Black or not, “A Different World” and the fictional Hillman College was their first look at an HBCU campus, and most importantly, the culture, sound, and feel of an HBCU.

The first stop on the “A Different World HBCU College Tour” , which is presented by Cisco and sponsored by Wells Fargo , is in Atlanta and begins Thursday night in the Atlanta University Center. The cast will meet with students, faculty and guests from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. The 10-stop tour will then move on to the nation’s capital at Howard University, and to Alabama at both Alabama State University and Tuskegee University in April. The remainder of the tour stops and dates will be announced at a later date, according to the tour’s I nstagram page and website .

The first episode of the show, which was created by Bill Cosby and producers Susan Fales and Debbie Allen, aired on September 24, 1987. Asked what the show’s legacy, impact on HBCUs, and this tour mean to him and the rest of the cast, Bell, who played Ron Johnson on the show, said it meant a lot.

“It means everything to us. We’ve spent the better part of 35 years as the preeminent representation for HBCUs in film and television,” Bell said. “The number of engineers, lawyers, doctors, HBCU presidents that have come up to us and said, ‘I am who I am today because I went to an HBCU and watched “A Different World”. It’s what matters.”

The cast and the show remain synonymous with HBCUs decades after airing its final episode on July 9, 1993. Bell acknowledged that impact and seemingly timeless connection with people that weren’t even born when the show came on the air or went off the air.

“For us to have the opportunity to carry that message to the next generation, it’s a blessing,” said Bell. “We want to get to as many schools as we can. That’s why we all do it.”

A Different World Reunion Tour: Celebrating Legacy and Education at HBCUs Across the Nation

Mail

Growing up in the 90’s, A Different World gave many of us a look into college life our families had never known. As a pre-teen I wondered what life would be like at ‘Hillman’ and years later graduated from college heavily influenced by the same television show that would shape my young mind. In a much-anticipated reunion, the beloved cast of the iconic college sitcom “A Different World” is embarking on a 10-city tour, celebrating the rich legacy of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across the nation. This historic reunion comes 35 years after the show first aired, promising a nostalgic journey for fans and an impactful experience for students and communities alike.

different world tour

According to a report by The Wrap, the tour will kick off on Feb. 29 in Atlanta, Georgia, a city renowned for its vibrant Black culture and home to several prominent HBCUs. Atlanta’s status as the “Black mecca” sets the perfect stage for the reunion, with its historic institutions like Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Morehouse School of Medicine comprising the Atlanta University Center—the first stop on the tour.

The star-studded cast includes Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Cleofis Wayne), Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson), Charnele Brow (Kimberly Reese), Jasmine Guy (Whitley Marion Gilbert-Wayne), Glynn Turman (Colonel Bradford Taylor), and Sinbad (Walter Oakes). Joining them are “A Different World” producers Susan Fales and Debbie Allen, adding their expertise and insight to the tour.

different world tour

The reunion tour is not just a celebration of the groundbreaking sitcom but also a platform to highlight the importance of higher education, particularly within the Black community. HBCUs have long been pillars of academic excellence, nurturing generations of students and playing a crucial role in shaping African American culture and history.

Throughout the tour, cast members and producers will engage with students, faculty, and local communities, sharing stories, insights, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes from their time on the show. From panel discussions to meet-and-greets, the tour promises a blend of entertainment, education, and inspiration.

For fans of “A Different World,” the reunion tour offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with beloved characters and relive memorable moments from the show. For students and HBCU communities, it’s a chance to celebrate their heritage, embrace their potential, and be inspired by the achievements of those who paved the way.

As the cast of “A Different World” takes to the stage once again, they carry with them the spirit of unity, resilience, and empowerment that defined the show. The inspiration they gave to a little black girl like myself who dreamed to be as smart as Kim and as loved as Whitley until it became true in real life. Through this reunion tour, they continue to champion the legacy of HBCUs and inspire future generations to pursue their dreams with passion and purpose.

Stay tuned as the “A Different World” reunion tour travels across the nation, spreading joy, knowledge, and a whole lot of nostalgia along the way.

Watch A Different World cast sing the show’s theme song while reuniting at the White House

Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown Cree Summer, Sinbad, and Glynn Turman were a few of the Hillman alums in attendance.

The cast of  A Different World is still showing off their Hillman College pride – 35 years later.

A few notable sitcom alums reunited for a national tour of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). During their latest stop in Washington, D.C., hosted by Howard College, they made an appearance at the White House to meet Vice President Kamala Harris and Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

The Grio ’s April Ryan shared a snippet of their White House visit on Instagram, which included Jean-Pierre leading the cast in a sing-along of the show’s iconic theme. While the show featured three different arrangements of the song across its six season run — with Phoebe Snow performing it in the first season and Boyz II Men stepping in for the final — the group opted for the version featured throughout the majority of the sitcom’s run, sung by the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin .

The tour, which kicked off on Feb. 29 in Georgia, features A Different World alums Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson); Charnele Brown (Kimberly Reese); Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert-Wayne); Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne); Dawnn Lewis (Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor); Cree Summer (Winifred Brooks); Glynn Turman (Col. Bradford Taylor); and Sinbad (Walter Oakes). The stars are joined by producers Debbie Allen and Susan Fales.

Per the tour’s official website , the purpose of their reunion goes far beyond "nostalgia." The tour's goal is to raise scholarship funds at participating HBCUs. "By leveraging the star power and cultural impact of A Different World , we aim to inspire a new generation to choose HBCUs as their academic homes," says a statement from the group.

A spin-off of The Cosby Show , A Different World initially follows second eldest Huxtable child Denise ( Lisa Bonet ) after she leaves home to attend Hillman College, a fictional historically Black university in Virginia. There she meets an eclectic group of schoolmates. Bonet departed the series after the first season when she became pregnant with daughter Zoë Kravitz (the now-disgraced series creator Bill Cosby reportedly objected to the idea of a pregnant Denise). Still, the sitcom ran for six seasons between 1987 and 1993, refocusing to center Guy’s Whitley and Hardison’s Dwayne.

'A Different World' cast reunites for HBCU tour kicking off in Atlanta

Kenny Murry | WABE

February 28th, 2024

different world tour

On Thursday, students of Atlanta-based HBCUs are in for an experience bound to place them in “a different world.”

The Atlanta University Center — home of Historically Black Colleges and Universities Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College — is hosting the kickoff to a 10-city college tour that reunites the cast of the groundbreaking NBC sitcom “A Different World” over 35 years after the series premiere.

In addition to Emmy-winning Atlanta actress and director Jasmine Guy, the event will feature former cast members Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, Charnele Brown, Glynn Turman, Dawnn Lewis and Sinbad.

Susan Fales, showrunner for the sitcom’s later seasons, and producer, director and five-time Emmy winner Debbie Allen will also be in attendance.

The hit series followed the academic and personal lives of students of the fictional Hillman College, an HBCU located in central Virginia.

Originally premiering as a “joke per minute” sitcom focused more on dormitory shenanigans than HBCU life, the series saw a revamp in its second season with the introduction of Allen as the show’s principal producer and director.

“Having come from Howard University. I knew what to do with the show. I had lived it and breathed it. So I knew the stories that they needed to be telling,” she said in an interview with Netflix’s “Strong Black Lead” in 2020.

“[Allen] sent the writers to go to Howard, Morehouse, Spelman, and she was like ‘Do your research like for any other show’,” Guy said in 2023 interview with The Tower . “[Allen said] ‘Go to classes, see what the differences are.”

Under her wing, the sitcom morphed into a topical home for subject matter including sexual assault, racism, AIDS, apartheid, domestic abuse and the importance of higher education.

Other notable cast members of the show included future Academy Award-winner Marisa Tomei, actress and producer Jada Pinkett Smith and veteran actress Loretta Devine (they will not be in attendance for the HBCU tour).

“A Different World” wrapped in 1993 after six seasons, four of which were spent in the top five in the Nielsen ratings. The show has continued to impact new generations of fans in syndication.

Proceeds from the HBCU tour will go towards helping to raise scholarship funds for HBCU students.

“Our mission goes beyond nostalgia,” the tour’s website states. “We’re on a quest to raise awareness and enrollment for HBCUs nationwide … to inspire a new generation to choose HBCUs as their academic homes.”

The event on Thursday is exclusively for Clark Atlanta, Morehouse and Spelman students. More details about the event will be sent after attendees register on the tour website .

The outlet reports that the crew will partake in events and live panel discussions surrounding the show’s enduring legacy, academia, and, of course, Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The collegiate tour will commence on Thursday (Feb. 29) in Atlanta at the Atlanta University Center. The Atlanta University Center is home to Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University.

Other cities featured on the tour include Montgomery, Ala, hosted by Alabama State University and Tuskegee University, and Washington, D.C., which Howard University will host. The outlet reports that both D.C. and Bama’s tour dates are scheduled for April.

A Different World  premiered in September 1987. The show ran for six seasons on NBC until ending in 1993. The show originally began as a spin-off of the uber-popular  Cosby Show . Lisa Bonet was the original main character, reprising her role as Denise Huxtable. It followed Benet in a coming-of-age story as she matured along with the various students of Hillman College, Virginia’s fictional HBCU.

According to  Entertainment Weekly , Benet was let go from the show after she became pregnant with then-husband Lenny Kravitz ‘s baby. Marisa Tomei , who played Maggie Lauten, was also booted from the show after one season.  Showbiz Cheat Sheet  reported that, after Debbie Allen took over, she wanted to include Tomei in a  Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner -type storyline featuring Kadeem. However, NBC executives were not receptive to the interracial couple and ultimately fought to remove Marisa from the show.  Loretta Divine , who portrayed the housemother, also left the show after one season.

Seasons 2-6 would then platform numerous future stars, including Jada Pinkett Smith , Tisha Campbell , Whoopi Goldberg , Tupac Shakur, Raven-Symoné , and more.

Sinbad returned to the spotlight for the first time in over three years , making a virtual appearance at the A Different World HBCU College Tour event on Feb. 29.

The comedian appeared on a large screen in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and spoke to those in attendance via video conference call.

The introduction of the celebrated comic was met with a resounding cheer from the audience of mostly college students, who excitedly applauded the star as he made his first appearance since suffering a major stroke back in 2020.

Sinbad was something of a surprise guest at the event, which saw the cast of the famed sitcom,  A Different World, reunite to raise money for HBCU scholarships and promote college enrollment.

The comedian -- who appeared in 77 episodes of A Different World as Coach Walter Oakes between 1987 and 1991 -- took to Instagram after his appearance to share his appreciation for the support from the students in attendance.

"Man, that was so cool. A Different World going to Atlanta, going to Morehouse College and on campuses and getting a chance to be on Zoom and say something to the kids," Sinbad marveled in an emotional video message. "It's wild that the kids even know who I am. That's beautiful."

"Thank you for your prayers, support, and positive thoughts. They've carried me this far and will see me through to the finish line," Sinbad captioned the heartfelt post. "It really is a different world out here!"

Sinbad's  stroke occurred in October 2020 . At the time, his family released a statement saying they were "faithful and optimistic that he will bring laughter into our hearts soon."

Then, in November 2022,  ET got an update from one of Sinbad's close friends from college, Phyllis Johnson , where she detailed the comedian's condition and recovery efforts.

"He's in the process of rehabbing from the stroke and learning to enunciate words and get his mobility back, at this time," Johnson shared at the time. She went on to explain that while Sinbad's current condition is not dire, it is incredibly debilitating, stating, "Just learning to walk and talk, and do all the things he could do for himself that he needs assistance with now."

Sinbad is best known for his television work on such classics as  A Different World  and  The Sinbad Show . His latest projects were his work on the television series  Rel  and appearing in an episode of  Atlanta.

He was having a quiet holiday season last December when he got a call: Pearl Jam were hoping Sheridan, who has a close relationship with the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails and designed several of their CD covers and tour visuals, would be interested in designing a visual component to their upcoming tour in support of their latest album, “Dark Matter.”  (The tour includes two nights at Climate Pledge Arena May 28 and 30.)

“I always thought I’d go back [to live visuals] someday if it was the right creative connection, the right artist,” Sheridan said from his hotel room last Thursday in Las Vegas, where the band was set to play that night. “Aside from [Pearl Jam] being legends, I grew up in Seattle. They’re part of my DNA.”

The only catch was the tour was just months away from kicking off and Sheridan would have to get to work immediately.

“Ed [Vedder] and I really hit it off and had a creative synergy, which was exactly what I was hoping for and I could tell what the band was hoping for,” said Sheridan, who now lives in Tacoma. “It was right around Christmas and everything was chaotic. All of a sudden, it’s like, ‘I guess I’m doing visuals for Pearl Jam now.’ ”

Pearl Jam’s longtime lighting director Kille Knobel and production designer Spike Brandt were looking to switch up Pearl Jam’s live presentation — which had always been known for being stripped down or even austere by today’s flashy standard — without going overboard.

A lot of modern trappings like huge LED screens and holoprojectors simply didn’t make sense for a band like Pearl Jam and risked coming off as inauthentic.

“All of that just felt like the wrong thing to me for Pearl Jam,” Sheridan said. “Pearl Jam isn’t a bright, cold LED screen; it’s a warm, incandescent light. We talked about, ‘What if we did this with a really analog feel?’ What if we used a projection screen, and some ways to help bring the visuals into the space with the band but not be fighting for attention with what is one of the greatest live bands, in terms of musical performances, of our generation.”

Sheridan settled on a 155-foot-by-35-foot projector screen, bigger than the iconic Cinerama (now SIFF Cinema Downtown) screen, which measures about 90 feet by 32 feet. He and his wife and business partner, Stephanie, set up a “lab” of sorts using a high-speed camera called an Ember, developed by Freefly Systems in Woodinville.

The camera allowed them to capture chemical reactions and light interactions at 1,000 frames per second and was easy enough to use that it encouraged experimentation, enough to fill more than 50 terabytes of hard drive space over two months of intense work.

“The band was very into this idea of setting up a lab with a very lean team and just playing with where these thoughts and ideas and experiments took us,” Sheridan said.

The resulting imagery evokes everything from microbiology to outer space, fitting for an album called “Dark Matter,” which references the invisible substance in outer space that binds the galaxy together.

“When you’re looking at it all at 1,000 frames a second and through a macro lens, it’s like two layers of things you can’t see with the human eye,” Sheridan said. “At that scale and at that speed, you start to see water starts to look like smoke, starts to look like fire — you start to see all the interconnected similarities. And that’s the theme of Pearl Jam … their shows are very communal.”

7:30 p.m. May 28 and 30; Climate Pledge Arena, 334 First Ave. N., Seattle; limited tickets remain starting at $182.53 through Pearl Jam and Ticketmaster’s face value exchange;  ticketmaster.com

Metallica Launches 2024 Tour: Photos, Video and Set List

Metallica kicked off their 2024 tour with an emphatic performance in Munich, Germany on May 24.

The concert officially launched the latest leg of Metallica’s M72 World tour. The trek, which began in April 2023, sees the metal giants playing two nights at each stop, with completely different set lists from one performance to the next.

In Munich, Metallica came out of the gates firing with “Whiplash,” the powerful lead single from their 1983 debut album Kill ‘em All (see a clip of the opening song in the tweet below). The band followed with one of their best-loved tunes, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” before delivering a rarity, “Of Wolf and Man.” The latter song, released on Metallica’s eponymous 1991 LP (known as the Black Album), hadn’t previously been performed during the M72 tour and was last played in 2021.

What is the Bandai Card Games Fest 23-24 World Tour?

The Bandai Card Games Fest is a series of nine large card game events held around the world. All of them will be held for multiple days, allowing for tournaments, collecting, and other activities. There will also be vendors, cosplay, and more. There’s also a limited amount of free giveaways at each event.

When Is the Bandai Card Games Fest?

Here are all of the dates for the upcoming events:

  • November 11: Hong Kong
  • November 26: Jakarta
  • December 2: Bangkok
  • December 16: Singapore
  • December 23: Shanghai
  • January 13: Kuala Lumpur
  • January 27: Los Angeles
  • February 3: Taipei

Then, the Tour Final will be held in Japan on March 2.

While it’s being touted as a World Tour, some fans have expressed frustration over the announced locations. Most of them are in Asia and one, Los Angeles, is in the United States. The lack of events in Europe have left a bad taste in some competitors’ mouths.

What Games Will Be at the Bandai Card Games Fest?

Bandai is hoping to “share the emotions the cards bring forth and connect people around the world” with World Tour.

Bandai Card Games Fest promos

To do so, they are bringing all of their card games together for every event, meaning fans from all over the world will hopefully come together to compete, collect, and hang out. The card games are:

  • Dragon Ball Super
  • Union Arena
  • Battle Spirits
  • Battle Spirits Saga

The largest card game in the mix is clearly One Piece. The fast-paced card game features all of the popular characters from the anime. It’s become one of the best-selling card games in the world, starting to catch up to Pokemon , Disney Lorcana, and Magic: The Gathering.

How to Attend the Bandai Card Games Fest

Head to the official Bandai Card Game Fest website to find more information about each event. Right now, the Hong Kong event is the only one with further information, including a schedule and exclusive items for sale.

Best call of duty game reveals, ranked, street fighter 6: 8 possible season 2 characters, quick links, where to find every world tour master in street fighter 6, 'missable' masters in street fighter 6, dlc masters in street fighter 6, how to change master assist in world tour mode.

Street Fighter 6 introduces several new game types, one of which is called World Tour mode. This effectively serves as a sort of Street Fighter RPG, with players able to create their own avatar and then use it to take on some of the toughest street fighters from all over the world. As they do so, they'll run into quite a few familiar faces, with the main cast of Street Fighter serving as masters from whom the playable character can learn and grow.

Street Fighter 6: The Best Master Gifts in World Tour Mode (SF6 Gift Guide)

Figuring out the best gift for every World Tour mode Master will make it much easier for players to reach the maximum bond and unlock Outfit 2.

There are 22 World Tour mode Masters in Street Fighter 6 , though not all of them can be encountered right away. Players will run into most of them as they make their way through the main story, though some can only be encountered through exploration and side quests, so players will need to keep their eyes peeled for any extracurricular opportunities that might come their way. Each master will teach players new moves upon meeting them and will also provide unique missions and costumes over time.

Updated May 22, 2024, by Tom Bowen: It's been almost a full year since the release of Street Fighter 6, during which time, four DLC fighters have been added to the game. Regardless of whether players pay to unlock these new combatants, A.K.I., Rashid, Ed, and Akuma are all available in World Tour Mode, bringing the total number of SF6 masters up to 22 as of the time of writing. The locations of these new Street Fighter 6 World Tour mode masters have been added to the table below, with detailed instructions on where to find them available a little further down the page.

Strictly speaking, none of the masters in Street Fighter 6 are really missable, as players will be able to meet with all of the optional masters at any time after their initial unlock point. That said, it's entirely possible to play through the entirety of the main story without encountering some of them, while others will need to be spoken to multiple times before they will agree to become the player's Master. With this in mind, players might want to refer to the cheat sheet below to get a better idea of when and where they should be looking.

Where to Find Lily in World Tour Mode

From the beginning of Chapter 4, players will be able to trigger a side mission called "The Spirit Guide" by speaking with an NPC called Ana in the Hong Hu Lu Chinatown area of Metro City. This will eventually lead them to the Thunderfoot Settlement in Mexico and an encounter with Lily.

Where to Find Blanka in World Tour Mode

At the beginning of Chapter 6, players will unlock the Ranger's Hut area of Brazil and can go there to meet Blanka. To unlock Blanka as a Master, they'll simply need to speak with him again after the introductory cutscene.

Where to Find Dee Jay in World Tour Mode

At the beginning of Chapter 6, players will unlock the Bathers Beach area of Jamaica and can go there to meet Dee Jay. To become Dee Jay's student, players should speak with him again after the cutscene ends.

Where to Find Cammy in World Tour Mode

From the beginning of Chapter 7, players will be able to trigger a side mission called "Special Unit Del-" by speaking with an NPC called Alfred in the Beat Square Subway area of Metro City. This will eventually lead them back to King’s Street in the United Kingdom and an encounter with Cammy.

Where to Find Manon in World Tour Mode

From about halfway through Chapter 7, players will be able to trigger the "Extra" side mission by speaking with an NPC called Manager Oscar in the Beat Square area of Metro City. This will lead to them visiting Fete Foraine in France and an encounter with Manon.

Where to Find Ryu in World Tour Mode

Not long after the encounter with E. Honda in Chapter 8, players will need to visit the Genbu Temple in Japan. Here, they'll be able to meet Ryu and can speak with him to become his student.

Where to Find Jamie in World Tour Mode

Players will first meet Jamie in the Hong Hu Lu Chinatown area of Metro City at the beginning of Chapter 8. A little later on in the chapter, they'll be able to find him on the rooftop where they met Boluo in Chapter 2 and can speak with him there to become his student.

Where to Find Kimberly in World Tour Mode

Players will first encounter Kimberly as part of the main story in Chapter 8. To unlock Kimberly as a Master, they'll need to speak with her on the roof of the Metro City police station during nighttime hours from Chapter 9 onward. To get up there, they can use the ladder near the Hangout.

Where to Find Zangief in World Tour Mode

To train under Zangief, players will need to complete the "Hither and Thither" side quest, which can be triggered by speaking with the two fighters outside the Mike Haggar Memorial Stadium in Metro City from Chapter 9 onward, though this can only be done at night.

Where to Find Dhalsim in World Tour Mode

Players can meet Dhalsim by completing a side mission called "The Yoga Statue," which can be triggered by speaking with an NPC called Anik in the Bayside Park area of Metro City from Chapter 9 onward.

Where to Find Juri in World Tour Mode

Upon reaching Chapter 12, players will be able to trigger the "A Hardboiled Adventure" side quest by speaking with Govind in the central Bazaar area of Nayshall. They'll meet with Juri as part of this quest.

Where to Find JP in World Tour Mode

After completing the main story of World Tour Mode, players should return to the Suval’hal Arena Entrance in the Mount Vayshal area of Old Nayshall at night. There, they'll find JP hanging around near the stairs opposite the main entrance to the arena and can talk with him to become his student.

Where to Find A.K.I in World Tour Mode

If players head to Metro City during the daytime, they'll find an old woman named Lao Mao standing around near Chun Li. When given an energy drink, she'll direct players to a man named Fang Fei, who can be found hanging around near the stadium (his exact location is marked on the map). After speaking with him, players will then be able to travel to Tian Hong Yuan via the world map screen, and it's there that they'll find A.K.I.

Where to Find Rashid in World Tour Mode

To find Rashid in World Tour Mode, players should make their way to the Old Nayshall Central Bazaar at night. Right by the hangout, they'll find a guy named Azam, who needs help making an educational video. From there, players should fast travel to the Lowlands Commerce Plaza and then travel north to the quest marker, which is where they'll find Rashid. After beating him in a best-of-three fight, players can find Rashid near the train station during the daytime, and must speak with him there to become his student.

Where to Find Ed in World Tour Mode

Those hoping to find Ed in World Tour Mode will need to head to the the Haggar Stadium in Metro City at night and speak with an NPC named C. Raven to trigger the Neo Shadaloo's Leader? side quest. Completing this mission is relatively straightforward, with players simply needing to head down into the nearby subway and beat some Neo Shadaloo members. Next, they'll just need to ride the train and then talk to C. Raven again on the platform. Once the mission is cleared, Ed will appear on the platform near the stairs. Speaking with him will trigger another fight with some Neo Shadaloo members, after which, players will become Ed's student.

Where to Find Akuma in World Tour Mode

If players head to the SiRN building in Metro City during the daytime, they'll be able to trigger the Master of Styles side quest by checking a poster on one of the outer walls. From there, they'll need to speak with an NPC named Steven near the entrance to the building to be transported up to the server room. There, they should head up to the fifth floor and speak with SiRN Staff Liu, who'll ask players to defeat the copy fighters using certain moves. They'll need to use Luke's Flash Knuckle on the left copy fighter, JP's Stribog on the center one, and Manon's Manaege Dore on the one on the right. After doing so, players should speak to the researcher again and then travel to Genbu Temple and talk with Retsu (players will need to have completed the Monk Without a Cause side quest first), which will unlock Enma's Hollow on the world map screen. It's here that players will find Akuma, though they won't be able to become his student right away. Instead, they'll need to return to Retsu to trigger the Murderous Demon side quest, after which, they can make their way back to Enma's Hollow and fight Akuma. Sadly, he'll end the fight prematurely, at which point, players will need to speak with Ryu at Genbu Temple and complete the resulting fight (win or lose, it doesn't matter). They can then fight Akuma again, although just like last time, he'll walk away before the fight is done. To get around this, players should speak with Luke and complete the resulting fight (like the fight with Ryu, it doesn't matter if they win or lose) to get some more advice. Players can then fight Akuma one last time, which will result in them becoming his student.

After raising their bond with a Master to a certain level, players will gain the ability to summon them in certain fights. To do so, they'll need to have at least one bar of their Super Art Gauge full, at which point, they'll be able to call for help by briefly holding down L1 and R1 (PlayStation) or LB and RB). This will cause the Master displayed in the bottom left or bottom-right corner of the screen to turn up and start attacking enemies, with the duration of the Master Assist determined by how many bars of the Super Art Gauge were full at the time that the assist was triggered. The more bars the player had, the longer the assist will be.

A lot of players will probably be wondering how to change the Master Assist in World Tour mode. Sadly, however, there isn't a way to do so at the time of writing. After unlocking the Master Assist option for a specific Master, they'll be added to a pool, with a new Master being chosen from this pool at random each time players use the mechanic. This means that there isn't currently a way for players to choose which Master will be chosen for Master Assist . That said, a new Master is only chosen from the pool when the currently displayed one is used, so players could technically save a Master for a specific fight if they so wished.

Frankie Stevens steps in for Eddie Low on NZ Highwaymen tour

The show must go on – when New Zealand music legends the NZ Highwaymen hit the highways of New Zealand in June and July this year the line-up will look slightly different to the one originally planned.

Eddie Low has withdrawn from the tour because of his ongoing health battle, but the show will go on with Eddie’s long-time friend, Frankie Stevens , stepping in for him.

Low said Stevens, who lives in Waverley, South Taranaki, was the perfect choice to join the tour in his place.

“Frankie is an entertainment veteran and I have full faith in his ability to deliver an incredible show. So much work has gone into planning this tour, and although I won’t be there physically, I’ll be cheering them on every step of the way. Frankie is a great showman, and I want the fans to support him and the rest of the band.”

Stevens is now preparing to hit the highway with fellow NZ Highwaymen Brendan Dugan, Gray Bartlett, and Dennis Marsh.

Gray Bartlett, Dennis Marsh, Brendan Dugan and Frankie Stevens will perform as the NZ Highwaymen in June and July this year.

Ilona Hanne caught up with Brendan Dugan to find out more about the tour, and what fans can expect from it.

Between all of you as individuals, collectively the NZ Highwaymen have clocked up many years of performing. When did your own career start?

I’ve been singing since I was about 7 , and then I recorded by first single when I was 13, and my first album when I was 14. My career really took off when I was 16 which is when I won New Faces, a talent show on TV, in 1968.

When you say your career took off, you don’t just mean in New Zealand do you - your singing took you overseas as well didn’t it?

Yes. I toured the USA, Canada and other countries. In 1973 I went to the Philippines and Hong Kong to perform for the troops who were stationed there. It wasn’t that safe there, I remember I was over there in the Philippines and one of the other artists was shot and killed on stage. That was the point I decided to go home, I said, “I’m only 21, I am too young to die, I’ve lots to do still”.

And you did have lots to do still, including those tours of the USA and Canada?

Yes, I toured about eight times in the mid 80s. Those concerts were so different to what I knew from New Zealand. We would have seven thousand people a night coming to hear us sing, that was a big crowd back then, and to think it was for me, this singer from New Zealand. That was really special.”

Fast forward through many years of performing, to big crowds here and overseas, and you are on tour again, as part of the NZ Highwaymen. How did the idea of forming a group like this come about?

It was an idea about three years ago now. I think lots have had the idea over the years, but no-one had done it. I had these good mates, all singers, and I thought, “there’s your New Zealand Highwaymen”. We all had the longevity in performance and the love of it. We spent about a year talking about it, setting it up, then we did the tour last year and it was a huge success. It was very cool, and we were keen to do it again.

And here you are, just about to set off on tour and do exactly that - do it all again. Do you have any plans to retire?

I’m trying to slow down, but it’s not looking good! All of us on this tour, we are all driven by a love of what we do, singing, performing and entertaining people.

Obviously this tour will be a bit different, with Frankie stepping in for Eddie. How do you feel about touring without Eddie, but with Frankie?

Eddie is a very great friend. We planned the tour together. At the time he felt he was up for it, but sadly that’s not the case right now. He’s a great guy, with a beautiful voice, and we will miss him on tour for both those reasons. We all think the world of Eddie. We are really fortunate to have Frankie stepping in though. He’s also a great friend of mine, and he’s the perfect fit. I can’t think of anyone else who could do it, he will be brilliant.

There’s going to be lots of great songs performed on this tour at every stop. Do you have a particular favourite or one you know fans will love?

I do a Kenny Rogers medley, and the crowd always seem to love that. It goes down a treat. New Zealanders love to sing, they love to sing songs they know, and they love performing with you, singing from their seats. We love that too, so come along, sing with us and enjoy the music.
