7 of the Best Places to Cruise in December

Last updated: November 29th, 2023

St. Kitts, one of the best places to cruise in December

  • Find a Cruise

December is one of the best times to take a cruise. Whether you’re looking to escape the winter cold or just prefer to celebrate the holiday season at sea , the end of the year is the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind on a ship.

So what are some of the best places to cruise in December? Considering the winter season, year-round beach destinations like the Caribbean land at the top of the list. Unexpected locales, such as New Zealand and Patagonia, are worth considering, too.

Whether you’re looking for family-friendly cruises, are planning a romantic couples’ getaway, or looking for a unique adventure, here are some of December’s best cruise destinations.

1: The Bahamas

Clear waters of Blue Lagoon Island

Blue Lagoon Island, Bahamas

One of the best places to cruise in December is to The Bahamas , where the pristine white sand and turquoise water will melt away any thoughts of chilly weather back home. Kids will enjoy snorkeling around coral reefs, while adults can relax and read a book while swinging in a hammock.

In December, days drift by with clear skies and warm sunshine. Enjoy the perfect weather by kayaking off Balmoral Island Beach, or bathing in the clear waters of Blue Lagoon Island.

Atlantis Resort in Paradise Island, Nassau

Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas

If you’re looking for holiday gifts, stop by the Nassau Straw Market, which offers plenty of items made by local vendors such as straw hats, jewelry, and souvenirs. For upscale shopping, head to Paradise Island.

Sleepy Bimini is a wonderful contrast to the bustle of Nassau, with dreamy white-sand beaches and superb snorkeling. If you’re seeking thrills, join a snorkel tour among reef sharks, or try your hand at game fishing.

Clear waters of CocoCay, Bahamas

CocoCay, Bahamas

Speaking of thrills, many of our Bahamas cruises call at CocoCay , our award-winning private Bahamian island. Here, you’ll find everything from hair-raising waterslides and ziplining to a blissful lagoon pool, stylish beach clubs, and even overwater cabanas in the style of the South Pacific.

2: The Caribbean

Flamingos walking along the shores of Aruba island

Aruba, Caribbean

The Caribbean , with its picture-perfect beaches, is another wonderful winter escape. There is no better place to cruise in December than the Caribbean, as the weather is generally perfect everywhere. It’s simply a matter of choosing the individual islands that appeal to you.

Take a Southern Caribbean cruise and admire the Dutch-built waterfront of Willemstad, Curaçao’s rainbow-colored capital. Snorkel over colorful reefs and shipwrecks in Aruba, or rest and recharge at Castries in St. Lucia, which was once called “the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean” by novelist James A. Michener.

Family swimming in Stingray City

Stingray City, Grand Cayman

Plan a Western Caribbean cruise vacation and stop in Cozumel, Mexico, where beachside restaurants and bustling bars beckon. Swim with stingrays (don’t worry, they’re friendly!) in the warm waters off Grand Cayman.

Enjoy fresh seafood and piña colada in the artsy port of Key West , or discover an astonishing variety of marine life as you dive or snorkel the enormous Belize Barrier Reef in Belize City.

Picturesque landscape of St Maarten

Watch: Eastern Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Cruises

If you choose to go east, there’s St. Maarten , divided between France and The Netherlands. Here, you can sunbathe on Orient Beach and take in the restaurants and patisseries of Marigot, the capital of the French side of the island.

In the British Virgin Islands , take a break from lounging on the sand on Tortola and enjoy a rum tasting at a local distillery. Or visit St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, where you can board a catamaran and sail towards the idyllic Honeymoon Beach, regarded as one of the most beautiful in the region.

3: Baja California

Beautiful landscape of Land's End in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Sail south to the sunshine and glittering blue seas around Cabo San Lucas , the glamorous town at the tip of Mexico’s long, thin Baja Peninsula.

There are gorgeous beaches in Cabo to explore, along with dramatic coastal scenery like El Arco, a towering rock arch at Land’s End.

Man on an ATV Ride in Cabo

ATV Ride in Cabo, Mexico

Some of the best things to do in Cabo include heading into the desert on an ATV or admiring the landscape from above on a parasailing trip. You could even spot whales and schools of dolphins from above.

Cabo has a fine culinary scene where you can sample anything from pan-fried lobster to tasty fish tacos, washed down with a margarita.

4: South America

Street view of Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina

If you want to explore further south, consider a cruise around South America with stops in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. Here you’ll find summer temperatures, extraordinary scenery, culture, and cuisine, making this one of the best places to cruise in December.

Soak in the sophisticated vibe of Buenos Aires by visiting the city’s museums, taking in a show at the Teatro Colon, or enjoying a dinner featuring Argentina’s world-famous steaks and red wines. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, take your partner to a milonga and schedule a tango lesson for two.

Iconic hand sculpture in La Mano in Punta del Este, Uruguay

La Mano in Punta del Este, Uruguay

In Punta Del Este , surf at Playa Brava and enjoy a cocktail at one of the many bars in La Barra neighborhood. Don’t forget to take a photo at La Mano, a massive hand-shaped sculpture that emerges from the sand on the beach.

Beautiful landscape of mountain lake in Ushuaia, Argentina

Ushuaia, Argentina

Adventurers will love Ushuaia , a town at the southern tip of South America that is considered the gateway to both Antarctica and the jagged mountains of Patagonia.

Hike around Tierra del Fuego National Park, where the snow-capped peaks will take your breath away, or hop aboard a catamaran to the Beagle Channel, where you can spot Magellanic penguins and sea lions.

5: The Galapagos

Sea lion enjoying the sun in Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Thanks to its location on the equator, the Galapagos archipelago and its unique flora and fauna can be enjoyed year-round. In December, the cooler season is approaching its end. Sometimes, as cool water and warm air meet, the islands are draped in a light mist, creating an almost mystical feel.

December is the best time to visit the Galapagos to see the endemic plants and animals that inhabit this volcanic archipelago. This being the equator, the sea will be warm enough for swimming, and the sunny days are perfect for hiking and exploring by Zodiac inflatable.

Family looking at Galapagos tortoise

Galapagos tortoise

Spot a wide variety of Galapagos animals , from giant tortoises to land and marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins, lava lizards, and Darwin’s finches, named after scientist Charles Darwin, who formulated his theory of evolution by natural selection based on his time here.

December is the last month when you can usually see blue whales, humpback whales, and whale sharks in the Galapagos before they migrate to different feeding grounds, which is another reason to visit then.

6: Southeast Asia

View of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam

Ha Long Bay in Hanoi, Vietnam

December is a great time to take a cruise to Southeast Asia because the humidity of the summer and the monsoon rains have abated, leaving tropical but pleasant temperatures that give you plenty of energy for sightseeing.

A December cruise to Southeast Asia will take you to the best ports in the region. Explore the wonders of Hanoi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and cruise on a traditional junk boat among the limestone rock stacks of Halong Bay.

Gate leading to the Imperial City in Hue, Vietnam

Imperial City in Hue, Vietnam

In the ancient Vietnamese city of Hue, tour the walled Imperial City and Citadel, built over 200 years ago when Hue was the country’s capital.

In the south, cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City shimmers with energy. You’ll find thought-provoking museums, sizzling street food, and serene temples wafting incense, all against a backdrop of futuristic skyscrapers. End your stay with a warm bowl of pho or a full-body massage before returning to the ship.

Exterior of Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand

Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand

See the landmarks in Bangkok , where there are dazzling floating markets and lavish temples to discover. Explore lush Phuket, where you can shop, sunbathe, or cruise the dramatic karst scenery of Phang Nga Bay. Take in the ultramodern architecture of Singapore and snap pictures of the city’s jaw-dropping giant “trees” at the Gardens By The Bay.

Street view of George Town in Penang, Malaysia

George Town in Penang, Malaysia

Some itineraries visit Malaysia , with a chance to visit mystical, mountainous Langkawi and historic George Town, the capital of Penang. Indonesia is another thrilling destination, and a chance to take in Lombok’s volcanic beauty, where forested slopes give way to dreamy golden beaches.

7: New Zealand

Scenic landscape of Milford Sound, New Zealand

Milford Sound, New Zealand

December is one of the best months of the year to visit New Zealand , when the weather is warm and sunny and locals head to the beaches and out into the lush countryside for hiking and cycling.

The scenery is truly spectacular, especially in Milford, Dusky, and Doubtful Sounds, where mountains and ribbon-like waterfalls plunge straight into the still water.

View of the wines on a Wine tasting in New Zealand

Wine tasting in New Zealand

New Zealand is known for its fantastic food scene, whether you want to taste the famous lamb, learn about artisan coffee, or tour the cellar doors around Hawkes Bay to sample the region’s prized wines.

There’s a lively culture here, with plenty of opportunities to learn about the history and traditions of the Māori people, or to explore the Scottish influences around Dunedin. Visit art galleries and museums and take in the otherworldly beauty of “Middle Earth” and the associated famous movie locations.

8: India & Sri Lanka

A selection of spices at a spice market in Goa, India

Spice market in Goa, India

Escape the cold northern winter for the balmy shores around the Indian Ocean, cooled by tropical breezes. You’ll be dazzled by the vibrancy of Goa’s colorful markets, a riot of sounds, sight, and scents.

Elephants in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Try the local food, which blends Indian and Portuguese influences. In Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka , you can learn about Buddhism while admiring shimmering temples. Nearby Hambantota is where you can embark on a safari to the Yala National Park, with a chance of seeing elephants, leopards, and sloth bears.

9: Canary Islands & Morocco

Cable car going up Teide in Tenerife, Canary Islands

Teide in Tenerife, Canary Islands

Basking in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa, the Spanish-owned Canary Islands enjoy year-round sun and make the perfect winter escape. Each island is different, although they’re all volcanic.

In Tenerife , you could take the cable car up Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, and throw a snowball before descending for evening beers on the beach in the sunshine.

Black sand vineyard of La Geria in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

La Geria in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote is almost desert-like, with vines and potatoes thriving in the black, volcanic soil, where they’re grown in pits to protect them from the winds that make this such a great spot for wind and kite surfing.

You can also admire the work of Cesar Manrique on Lanzarote. This famous architect created graceful, whitewashed forms that are the perfect contrast to the stark scenery.

Beautiful shades of blue in Chefchaouen, Morocco

Chefchaouen, Morocco

Discover the ancient culture of Morocco , where the cities bustle with colorful markets, and graceful minarets pierce the sky. Visit Chefchaouen, a town that’s painted entirely in brilliant blue, or shop for colorful ceramics and hand-woven rugs in Tangier.

These cruises also call at ports in Spain , where the North African Moorish culture is still evident, especially in glorious Seville. The city’s historic center is packed with exquisite palaces built by the Moors, and narrow alleys where the sounds of flamenco music are carried on the breeze.

Our Favorite Destinations for Winter Cruises This Year

By Zachary Laks

Phillip Island Australia

Swapping blizzards for trade winds, winter cruises can be the tonic to your seasonal downswing. Not unlike birds, cruise ships head south for the winter, chasing the sun, sand, and appeal of tropical paradise. Though with an increase in expedition travel, shifting routes are leveraging the winter months as prime time for glacial destinations, from the northern lights to Antarctica. If you’re going to travel to the ends of the earth, 2019 was the year ships stepped up to take you there in luxury and style. This past year alone saw 10 new expedition builds hit the seas, including the ultra luxury flair of Scenic Eclipse , complete with two helicopters and a seven-person submarine, and Hurtigruten's Roald Amundsen , the industry's first hybrid ship powered by LNG and electric battery. Whether the destination is a remote island or an iceberg, these winter cruises are your best bet for the season.

Caribbean

The Caribbean

From Boston to Miami , ports swell throughout the winter months with ships headed south to the Caribbean. This season’s mega-ships joining the fray include Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas , the world’s largest cruise ship; Norwegian’s newest and largest ship, Norwegian Encore , and the design-forward Celebrity Edge . Narrowly avoiding extensive damage from Hurricane Dorian , the cruise-favorite ports of The Bahamas are all back and operating at full capacity. As for determining what Caribbean itinerary is best for you, the cruise line and ship should take top priority. There’s not too much variation in beach quality at destinations along the eastern and western Caribbean routes, and nearly all islands offer comparable thrills such as zip-lining, scuba diving, and liquor tastings.

Private cruise line island stops help distinguish Caribbean itineraries, where well-kept beaches are steps from the ship and the shore-side BBQ lunches are included. New this year, Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day CocoCay enhances the private island experience. The Bahamas-based outpost features an expansive water park featuring North America’s tallest water slide, a helium balloon that takes adventurers 450 feet high, and floating cabanas available to rent for the day.

For smaller ships, Viking has three of its sister ships traversing the Caribbean this winter , sailing seven to 21 nights from Miami, San Juan, and New York. Silversea continues its annual Caribbean winter itineraries spanning five to 24 days, with highlights that include swimming with the pigs of Exuma Island, a day in the remote Mayreau Island with a population of 200, and the remarkable 365 beaches at Falmouth, Antigua, and Barbuda.

Antarctica

Topping the bucket list as the final frontier for the world’s most avid travelers, Antarctica has never been more accessible, as a surge in expedition cruising has chartered new ways south. Only a select few vessels in the world are outfitted with ice-strengthened hulls strong enough to forge through the waters and iceberg-flanked passageways of the sprawling continent. The range in cruises spans small, expedition-focused ships that can accommodate 50-100 passengers to larger, 200-passenger five-star vessels. Voyages originate predominantly from Argentina’s Buenos Aires and Ushuaia before crossing the choppy seas of the Drake Passage, where whales can often be spotted frolicking in a ship’s wake. Temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula (where most cruise ships frequent) are warmest December through February, with averages in the 30s. Nearly 24 hours of daylight makes up for the climate, with endless hours of sightseeing and sporadic excursions from the ship by way of guided Zodiac boats and kayaks.

On trend is the new fly-cruise experience, optimizing your time cruising the Antarctic coast by flying over the trying swells of the Drake Passage, normally a two-day trip by sea completed in two hours by plane. Having launched just last month, Antarctica21's Magellan Explorer is the region’s newest ship purpose-built for the operation of Antarctic fly and cruise expeditions. If you prefer your white ice caps with white glove service, Silversea’s newly announced Antarctica Bridge will be the first to bring an ultra-luxury touch to the fly-cruise experience. An all-business class private charter jet will transport passengers from Punta Arenas, Chile to the Silver Explorer , ready to cruise through the remote paradise (slated for its first expedition December 2021).

Bagan Myanmar

Southeast Asia

Ocean and river cruises continue to expand their routes throughout Southeast Asia, with ports in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore showing significant growth in cruise traffic this past year. Avoiding the heat of the summer, most cruise lines focus their itineraries on the region in the fall and winter months. Singapore is a major hub for ocean liners as well as a popular stopover for smaller ships passing through. The island city-state is a seasonal home to Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas from October through April, sailing mostly four- to five-day trips north to Malaysia and Thailand; Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess from December through February sailing a wide variety of Southeast Asia itineraries; and Costa Cruises’ Costa Fortuna , which does primarily week-long tours of Malaysia and Thailand.

River cruises are most predominantly found on the Mekong in Vietnam and Myanmar’s Irrawaddy river . Viking Mekong has a seven-day Mekong river tour that shifts from a northbound to southbound river expedition weekly, with the most temperate weather found in the low 70s from December through March. December and January are best for Myanmar’s river cruises as it’s one of the sunniest and driest times of the year, with temperatures along the river banks averaging from 75 degrees in Mandalay to 80 degrees in Bagan. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours’ year-round Bagan and Mandalay river cruise on the Scenic Aura adds the comforts of luxury as you explore one of the world’s most remote destinations.

Phillip Island Australia

The most popular port in Australia is the coveted Sydney Harbour, home to the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. January and February are the warmest months to head down under, averaging temperate 72-degree days with an average of nine hours of sunshine. Royal Caribbean has invested heavily in the market, steering four ships with more than 80 sailings throughout their 20/21 season. Ovation of the Seas returns for its fifth winter homeport in Sydney with two- to 19-night itineraries that include the South Pacific. Opting for a more intimate and luxurious cruise of the Tasman Sea, Seabourn Encore ferries passengers one way between Sydney and Auckland on a 14- to 16-day New Zealand & Australia itinerary from December through March. (One warning: Come prepared with layers and rain gear, as it’s not uncommon to experience a swell of weather patterns in a matter of hours.)

Hurtigruten Norway

As elusive as they can be magical, the Northern Lights are the primary drive for opting to coast along the frigid waters of Norway in the winter months. Drastically dropping below zero as you near the Arctic Circle, temperatures will rarely peak above 20 degrees. Add in an average of five to six hours of daylight (or even less in the Arctic Circle as polar nights bring days without the sun). But the discomfort is tamed by the majesty of a Northern Lights sighting. Among the most dependable guides to the region, Hurtigruten’s Norwegian-owned and operated history with the coast dates to 1893. Predominantly known as a ferry line that shuttles locals, Hurtigruten welcomes expedition travelers on no-frills Northern Lights tours. The 12-day sailings run October through February. With their experience and northernmost-reaching itineraries, they’re so confident you’ll glimpse the Northern Lights during this time that if you don’t, they offer compensation by way of a six- or seven-day cruise free of charge. Of the larger lines, British-based P&O Cruises offers only one to two itineraries each year in search of the phenomenon, while Royal Caribbean offers a single itinerary that reaches the Arctic Circle this year on Jewel of the Seas . Select smaller lines that traverse the Arctic Circle with a little more regularity during the wintery months include Cruise & Maritime Voyages, Saga Cruises and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines.

NCL Cruise Line Pride of America Na Pali Coast Kauai Hawaii

Regulations prohibit foreign-flagged ships (a.k.a. nearly all major cruise lines) to sail a U.S.-based itinerary without stopping at one foreign port. Cruise lines have skirted around this issue by creating Hawaiian voyages that originate in Vancouver , make a pit stop in Ensenada, Mexico on the way to Honolulu , or make Hawaii a destination on a transpacific crossing. Hawaii’s winter temperatures average in the high 70s and cruises that sail the island waters January through March are timed for a chance encounter with humpback whales . Norwegian Cruise Line currently operates seven- to 14-day itineraries roving the Hawaiian islands and making its way to the South Pacific in the spring. Go for the seven-night “greatest hits” cruise that hits up ports including Maui, Kona, and Kauai. If you’re looking to sail from the mainland, Princess Cruises’ Star Princess and Grand Princess feature round-trip 15-day itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver .

Silversea Galapagos

Galápagos Islands

Cruises are the most practical and immersive way to experience the natural wonder of this archipelago of volcanic islands, which straddles the equator in the Pacific Ocean. Smaller, intimate ships sail uniform routes approved by Galápagos National Park . December through March marks the high season on the islands, as the temperatures average in the upper 70s and low 80s, and endemic species enter into breeding and nesting season. Choosing a Galápagos cruise comes down to what kind of adventure you want, and what standard of luxury you’re seeking. Sailing its inaugural winter season, Celebrity Flora has arrived in the islands as one of the most high-tech and luxurious ships to navigate the islands in years. The 100 passenger ship is sailing 10- to 16-night itineraries. Silversea’s Silver Galápagos seven-day trek continues its all-inclusive sailings as capacity demands lead to the line’s expansion with Silver Origin , set to debut summer 2020. For a more intimate and eco-conscious expedition , Ecoventura sails luxury yachts with capacity for only 20 passengers on 7-night itineraries.

Austrias Schlögener Schlinge Horseshoe Bend AmaMagna

Prioritizing the romanticism of strolling Piazza San Marco in Venice with room to breathe over a beach is a real consideration—especially as European cruise ports continue to manage overcrowding issues in the high season. Cruising Europe in the winter months adds a convenience factor that’s hard to find any other time of the year, as restaurants welcome you in off the street, winding lines for top museums and attractions are almost non-existent, and bargaining at the deserted markets is in your favor. The Christmas market river cruises are among the most popular of the season, alighting at each frankincense-filled pop-up along the Rhine and Danube rivers. It’s important to note for ocean cruises that the seas can be rough, especially the Bay of Biscay. Weather conditions can often lead to last-minute itinerary changes and canceled excursions. Also, some of the port highlights use the slow season to close for break or refurbishment. Plan ahead and come prepared with a few options for each port.

Among the new ships making their way through Europe this winter season, AmaWaterways' 196-passenger AmaMagna is turning heads as the first-of-its-kind, extra-wide river ship. The ship is nearly twice the width of standard riverboats, increasing capacity but also adding more interior space for dining venues, a heated pool, and a water sports platform from the back of the ship. The ship will roam the Danube year-round, including an annual November and December Christmas Markets on the Danube tour .

What’s the Best Month to Cruise? Pros & Cons of Sailing Each Month of the Year

Let’s get one thing straight right at the start. There is no bad time to cruise . Whether you want to have a summer vacation or a winter getaway, the weather somewhere in the Caribbean is always warm and welcoming.

cruise late december

That said, with our experiences having sailed seemingly every month on the calendar, we have found there are definite advantages and disadvantages to sailing each month of the year. For example, cruises in August offer the ability to sail when the kids are out of school (meaning entire families can travel together). On the other hand, August is also notorious for hurricanes disrupting travel to Caribbean ports.

As you’ll see below, there are trade-offs with each time of year to sail. No month is perfect. However, many of the potential downsides are manageable in our opinion — and shouldn’t deter you from taking a cruise when it fits your schedule and budget.

Taking a Cruise in January

Pros : We like sailing in January as one of the biggest advantages of cruising this time of year is price. During this time of year school is in session and many people are back at work after a holiday break. That means it’s difficult for many to cruise. Cruise lines typically have discounted rates to fill up the ship in January; the same cruise departing at the height of the busy summer can cost hundreds of dollars more than in January.

As well, when winter has gripped most of North America, the Caribbean still offers a warm getaway with lots of sunshine. It’s a welcome change from the snow and cold see in most areas.

Cons : If you are a family, it might be tough for you to take a January cruise. It will usually mean the kids have to skip a few days of school to take the trip. In addition, if you have to fly in for your cruise, there are chances of winter weather causing delays to your schedule. You’ll want to make sure you plan your flight to arrive the day before your cruise, just in case.

As well, this time of year trips from the West Coast will still be cool and Alaskan cruises don’t start sailing until April/May.

Taking a Cruise in February

cruise late december

Pros : February offers the same advantages to sailing as you see in January. Fares are normally discounted, with the ability to save hundreds on a cruise by sailing in February versus the height of the summer season. It’s also cold in most of the United States and Canada, making a warm getaway awfully enticing.

Cons : Like January, you might find it difficult to take time off after the holidays to enjoy a cruise. Doing so means spending vacation days early in the year and/or having the kids miss school. There are also still strong snowstorms in many parts of North America during February, meaning it’s possible that getting to the port can be an adventure if you have to fly in for your cruise from a northern city.

As well, even if sailing to the Caribbean, the pools and water on a ship may still be too cool to enjoy fully. Don’t plan on spending much time in the water in our experience.

Taking a Cruise in March

Pros : With warmer weather and Spring Break, a cruise is on many people’s minds come March. In fact, if you are a Spring Breaker, this is a great time to sail as a cruise offers an affordable getaway to the beach without having to worry about flights or hotel. Just hop on the ship and start your vacation.

As well, if you’re headed to the Caribbean, March can be warm — but not too warm compared to the heat of the summer months.

Cons : If you aren’t a Spring Break fan, then this might not be the best month to sail. Cruises — especially shorter trips (3-5 days) — will have a younger crowd and more of a party atmosphere. You’ll also see a spike in prices starting in mid-March as cruise lines raise prices for trips that coincide with Spring Break.

Taking a Cruise in April

cruise late december

Pros : April represents one of your last chances to get a deal on a cruise before the busy summer sailing season. Discounts and deals are still available up until about mid-May, giving you the chance to save a bundle on a trip compared to sailing just a month or two later. As well, the threat of snow is diminished in northern parts of the United States and hurricane season isn’t here yet for port cities. It’s hard to find better weather than what you get in April.

Cons : After Spring Break, it’s back to school and work for most people. That means many have a tough time taking a trip at this time a year. That’s unfortunate because April is the “Goldilocks” of cruise months for the Caribbean — it features affordable prices, good weather, and is before hurricane season gets cranked up, which always adds a wildcard to travel in the Caribbean.

Taking a Cruise in May

Pros : Heading into May, cruisers hitting the Caribbean can start to experience some warmer weather both at home and on their cruise. While the water and beach are typically warm enough for swimming and laying out even during the coldest winter months, it is a few degrees warmer in May, which can make it more inviting to hit the beach. For example, Cozumel’s average high in January is 83, compared to 91 degrees in May. If you’re the type who loves warm water, May is when things start to heat up.

Cons : If you wait until too late in the month, you’ll start to see higher prices for your cruise. The end of May marks the start of the summer cruising season, and fares start to jump up. One place where you can save? Cruises to Alaska typically start their season in May, and it’s the cheapest month to sail to that region . We’ve sailed Alaska this time of year and highly recommend it.

Taking a Cruise in June

Pros : If you want a summer getaway with warm weather and water, June is a great choice. Hurricane season starts June 1st, but it’s still rare that you’ll have a chance of a hurricane this early. Meanwhile, the Caribbean is starting to heat up so you can have a true beach summer vacation without worrying about it being too chilly either on the ship or in port. Also, with the kids out of school, you can take them on your trip without worrying about absences.

Cons : With schools out of session and the popular summer vacation season, fares spike for June and through the rest of summer. You’ll usually be paying more for the same cruise compared to taking it earlier in the year. As well, if you aren’t the type that likes to cruise with families on the ship, then keep in mind that summer months typically see an influx of kids.

Taking a Cruise in July

Cruise in July

Pros : Like June, you’ll find warm and sunny days filling July. And with the kids out of classes, you’ll have the opportunity to sail without missing school, making it an ideal time to cruise if you are traveling with kids. While it is warm in the Caribbean, regular afternoon “pop-up” showers can help cool things off during the heat of the afternoon. This also represents the height of the Alaskan cruise season, offering the most options (albeit at higher prices) of the year.

Cons : The biggest negative with sailing in July is hot weather. On sunny days, it can get downright hot in many Caribbean ports. If you aren’t used to the heat and humidity, it can be draining. As well, you should start to look out for hurricanes and tropical storms during July — especially if traveling later in the month. While cruise ships will avoid any storms, they can be unpredictable and cause changes to your itinerary.

Also, just keep in mind that you should expect the highest cruise fares of the year during this time.

Taking a Cruise in August

Pros : Consider August the last hurrah if you want to be able to cruise with the kids out of school. While the weather is hot, being able to travel as a family without missing school days is the biggest draw of sailing in this month. If the kids don’t start back until September, then you can sometimes find deals late in the month that can save you considerably on your cruise fare.

Cons : Similar to July, you can run into weather issues in August. Specifically, the heat and humidity is at its worst in the Caribbean during August. While afternoon showers can cool things off, they are not a guarantee. You also have to start worrying seriously about hurricanes. Late August is reaching the peak of hurricane season. While the chances are low that your specific cruise will be hit by a storm (cruise lines steer clears of storms as much as possible), it could disrupt your trip if a hurricane hits a port of call.

Taking a Cruise in September

Pros : With the busy summer cruise season past, students back to school, and summer vacations in the rear view mirror, September offers a “shoulder” season of sorts. While the Caribbean is still warm — perfect for those that want to hit the beach and the water — cruise fares are heavily discounted versus the expensive summer months. In other words, you get the warm weather of the summer with the lower prices of the fall. As well, your cruise is likely to have fewer kids onboard. It’s also the last chance to sail Alaska for the season, when crowds are fewer and fares are generally cheaper.

Cons : September actually marks the peak of hurricane season. Historically, the first week of the month is the busiest for storms and then activity quickly drops off later in the month. Still, even if your ship isn’t directly impacted by a storm, it can cause issues at Caribbean ports.

Taking a Cruise in October

Cruise in October

Pros : If you’re not wanting to deal with heat, then October is a great time to visit the Caribbean. While the humidity is always a factor, October sees the start of a cooling trend in the weather. As well, while hurricanes can occur in October, the season is largely over so you don’t have to worry about them disrupting your trip as much. Finally, cruise prices also fall during this time of year, meaning you can book a solid deal without spending a bundle.

Cons : It shouldn’t be a surprise that April and October are two months that we consider great times to sail. Like April, the biggest con is that it can be difficult for people with kids to travel without taking their children out of school for a few days. Apart from that, the month sees good weather and cheaper fares, and it’s before the harsh winter hits many places in the U.S. and Canada, disrupting air travel to the port or the weather in the port city.

Taking a Cruise in November

Pros : By the time November rolls around, people are starting to think of warmer weather, especially if you live in a cold area. Taking a trip during this month can lead you away from the cold and gray to the warm and blue. It’s also a great time to find cheap cruises, apart from trips that sail during the Thanksgiving holiday (which are more expensive).

Cons : Scheduling around the Thanksgiving holiday can be tough, and if you have to fly to your cruise during the busiest travel time in the United States, it can mean dealing with long lines and delays at airports. Apart from that, November is a great time to book a cruise with cheap deals and nice weather in the Caribbean and The Bahamas.

Taking a Cruise in December

Pros : The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is one of the absolute cheapest times to sail. With many people not looking to travel between these two major holidays, cruise lines slash fares. It’s not unusual to see a trip costing 50% less than a comparable trip during the summer. Needless to say, cruising in December is also a big draw for people wanting to get away from the snow and cold of many places in the north.

Cons : Trying to fit a cruise between Thanksgiving and Christmas can be tough for many schedules. And while many people take a cruise during Christmas itself, those trips are more expensive. If you are traveling by air, be ready for the possibility of delays due to weather and holiday travel crowds.

What Are the Least Expensive Months to Sail?

If you want to sail for cheap, then we suggest looking at months like January, February, April, May, September and October . We find that rates during these months tend to be less expensive than for the same cruise if headed to the Caribbean. During these times fewer people are traveling, leading to generally lower cruise fare.

If headed to Alaska, then the months are more limited. The season runs largely from May through September. In this case the ‘shoulder’ months of May and September offer the lowest prices.

So Which Month Is Best to Cruise?

As mentioned above, there is no “bad” time to sail. However, if we had our pick, we would suggest either April or October if you need to fly into a cruise port . The generally good weather and low prices combine to make it a cheap and easy time to sail.

If you are within driving distance of a port, then you can expand these months to include early winter months and later fall months. During these times the weather on a cruise will be warmer than back home, prices are very affordable, and if driving, you can get to the port without worrying about airline delays.

Cool Cruiser

It seems like there are good prices on caribbean cruises early january. But i know last year was a mess with snow at airport in vancouver. This year you had the bahamas cruise that was diverted to east coast. Am i extrapolating based on recent events or is it a bad time to go?

Our September cruise to Bermuda wound up going to Nassau. Stuff occasionally happens, so while the odds are very strong that you will go where intended, you have to accept the possibility that a glitch might arise —- so it is important that you be happy with being on the ship, and not see certain arrival at advertised port(s) as essential to you.

We enjoyed the ship - and just stayed aboard in Nassau (which we had seen too many times) where the heat and humidity was unbearable.

When we lived in Florida we went in about a dozen January cruises. In general, the weather was good - certainly warmer than a lot of places. The first and last day were often chilly - like under 10C or 50ish F but after that it was nice. I would definitely cruise to the Caribbean in January.

We did a Mexican Riviera cruise last January out of LA and the weather wasn’t nearly as nice as the Caribbean. But that may have been a one-off with that weather system that whacked the western half of the continent in December.

We have done numerous Caribbean cruises in that timeframe and all have been excellent weather wise.  The Bahamas, which is much further north than the Caribbean, can be less predictable as it is essentially southern FL weather, so what is normal that time of the year there will be similar in the Bahamas.

IMO yes, you are "extrapolating".   Stick to the Caribbean, plan at least a day travel in advance to help mitigate any weather related travel issues from the north, and enjoy your cruise.

BTW the reason some of the fares are lower then has a lot to do with peak vacation travel with Christmas and New Years, when children are out of school, and the weeks before and after when family travel is much more limited.

5,000+ Club

We have sailed out of Baltimore, to Bahamas or Caribbean, every winter for years.  We board in long pants, sweaters, and coats. Coats go under the bed the second day.  I don't think we've ever had a change of ports on these winter cruises, although we have, occasionally, in other months.

Not surprising as the Mexican Riviera, while very nice weather wise, is still considerably north of the Caribbean - more in the latitudes of the Gulf of Mexico, which is above the Caribbean. Still a pretty big difference weather wise that time of year.

Our January 17, 2022 on Navigator we were lucky and had great weather.

You could also  make the same case for traveling in the Bahamas from June 1 to Nov 30 because it is hurricane season.

clackey

We have had to bug out early twice because of bad weather.  Once we left 2 days early during an ice storm.  Then last year, we left 3 days early because of an impending storm and loafed our way down through Mississippi stopping at Clarksdale for a Blues fix.  Visited the Crossroads and then went to Vicksburg and toured the Civil War Battlefield. A day early in New Orleans let us look around the French Quarter.  It turned out swell.  I can understand the anxiety when one has to time a cruise around a work schedule or flights. Fortunately, we are retired and can go with whatever Mother Nature wants to throw at us.

That being said, winter is usually the best time to cruise if you are looking for cheaper cruises.

Vancouver winter flights are always a potential risk, as although we rarely get snow, a couple of inches can cause gridlock on the streets and flight delays at YVR. Really easy to mitigate this risk - leave at least 1 day early and stay at the port pre-cruise.

Our last World Cruise started in San Pedro in early January, so we flew down 2-days early,

Weather is unpredictable and what was experienced last year, or even last week is not what you may experience. The Bahamas is also further North than most of the traditional Caribbean islands. One benefit of cruising this region in Dec/Jan is that TRS (Hurricane) season is over.

Thanks

We love traveling during this time period. Caribbean/Bahamas cruises often have nice weather. Whether or not you can fly out of the area you live in January is another story.

Great Review

Have Cruised many times during this time frame and luckily have had great weather. If going out of Port Canaveral, expect high 60's to low 70s, Miami usually mid 70s. We have also Cruised out of New Orleans this time of year and temps in the 60's then by 1st sea day approaching 80.

We drive to the ports so we always head down at least one day earlier, but have left an extra day earlier to beat weather.

Not exactly what you asked, but I've sailed the first week of December ... sandwiched between holidays, it's often a bargain week.  The weather is typically chilly but not cold; you can count on wearing shorts during the day and (depending upon your personal thermometer) might need a light jacket in the evening.

Of course, temperature can vary widely.  I remember once we sailed on Thanksgiving, and it was very, very cold ... not typical at all for the Caribbean.

On 12/22/2023 at 2:53 PM, navybankerteacher said: Stuff occasionally happens

So true, so true.  Any week of the year, stuff occasionally happens.  I'd be okay signing up for a cruise at this time of year under these conditions:

- If the price were low, and -- excepting Christmas and New Year's -- they often are at this time of year.

- If I could drive to the cruise.  Okay, not a total deal-breaker, but you're more "in control" if you can drive to the cruise.

- I wouldn't want to make this a once-in-a-lifetime cruise.  The weather could mess things up, so I'd want to be sure all members of my party were coming in with a roll-with-the-punches attitude.

Bahamas cruises in January (which tend to hit uninteresting ports on short itineraries) in January can give you cool/chilly weather.

The Caribbean is completely different - it is generally tropical and almost certain to be warm, it offers a variety of ports, and generally involves longer itineraries - a week or so - which makes the effort of getting to the port worthwhile.  Lumping the two regions together when discussing January cruises makes very little sense.

SbbquilterUT

Love to cruise the first week in December - ship was decorated and prices were great.  January is very nice, particularly Southern Caribbean.  One holiday timeframe cruise made us realize not for us - high prices, loads of children, large family groups that took over public spaces preventing us from enjoying being out around the ship.

40,000+ Club

Dec-Jan is usually a great time to go to the Caribbean.  This year was a real outlier with a few weeks of awful weather (especially in the Western Caribbean) including rain, 3-4 meter seas, etc.  DW and I have been going to the Caribbean in early December for decades and this was the only year where we had multiple days of awful weather.  Such is life.
