Churchill Downs Behind the Scenes Tours

Location Icon

Derby Day comes just ones a year, but a variety of tours take travelers behind the scenes of Louisville, Kentucky ’s legendary horse-racing venue.

Visitors at one of the Churchill Downs Behind the Scenes Tours in Louisville, Kentucky (photo courtesy of Kentucky Derby Museum)

As May arrives each year, excitement stirs among horse-racing fans for the annual running of the Kentucky Derby, but you can visit the race’s iconic home of Churchill Downs in Louisville throughout the year. The on-site Kentucky Derby Museum runs a variety of tours inside the legendary venue, providing tour takers behind-the-scenes access to parts of the property they couldn’t normally see.

The popular Barn and Backside Tour explores the expanse of 47 barns that hold up to 1,400 horses, some of which can be spotted going to and from the track, getting baths or relaxing in their stalls. Should you take the early-morning version of this tour, you may have a chance to spot horses training on the famous racetrack. For a more extended watch, sign up for the Thoroughbred Workout Tour, where guides focus on the intricacies of training a racehorse.

The Superstars and Spires tour provides special access to Millionaire’s Row, private dining rooms and balconies where notable figures watch the Derby. During the Bourbon and Bridles Experience, enjoy a bourbon tasting and learn how to make a mint julep with the racetrack as your backdrop. To see the horses in their element, travel off-site for the Hermitage Farm and Museum Tour. For about two weeks before the Kentucky Derby each year, special Derby Season tour offerings are available.

Allow time to visit the museum exhibits where you’ll enjoy mock betting, see galleries about Derby traditions and watch footage of past races. A 20-minute film includes everything from a foal taking his first steps to breathtaking footage of horses racing right at you. 704 Central Ave., Louisville, Kentucky 40208, 502/637-1111, derbymuseum.org

What makes Churchill Downs so special? The quirks, traditions of the Kentucky Derby’s home

What makes Churchill Downs so special? The quirks, traditions of the Kentucky Derby’s home

The Athletic has live coverage of the 2024 Kentucky Derby , the 150th anniversary.

Saturday’s running of the Kentucky Derby is the sesquicentennial anniversary of the longest continuously held sporting event in America. Although Churchill Downs has undergone many renovations and changes throughout the years — including a $200 million renovation to the paddock this year — its twin spires still overlook the iconic track.

It’s a bucket list item for any horse racing fan to attend the Kentucky Derby and take in a day of races at Churchill Downs. More than 165,000 people should be there on Saturday to celebrate the 150th Run for the Roses.

When the horses walk from the paddock to the track on Saturday evening, “My Old Kentucky Home,” a song written in 1852 by Stephen Foster, will play across Churchill Downs. Fans in their Sunday best, crowned with over-the-top hats and with mint juleps in hand, will celebrate long-standing traditions as the clock gets closer to Saturday’s 6:57 p.m. ET post time for the 150th Kentucky Derby .

Whether you’re new to the Kentucky Derby or a longtime fan, let us be your virtual tour guide around the storied track at Churchill Downs.

The Run for the Roses

The “Run for the Roses,” as the Kentucky Derby is often called, is 1 ¼ miles long and the first race in the Triple Crown each year, a feat completed by also winning the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. For 37 years after Affirmed won it in 1978, the Triple Crown throne sat vacant. Then, in 2015 American Pharoah broke through and then Justify did it just three years later.

Only three-year-old thoroughbred horses are eligible to run in the race, and a series of qualifying events narrows the field to the top 20. Owners pay $25,000 to enter their horse into the Kentucky Derby and another $25,000 if or when that horse enters the starting gate. Everything done to support these horses, from breeding to birth to development, is to create a horse that can win the Kentucky Derby.

Three years old is a relatively young age for a thoroughbred horse. Some horses, like Flightline (foaled in 2018), may hit their peak after the three-year-old season, but winning a Kentucky Derby changes everything for your owner, trainer and family.

The winner of this year’s 150th Kentucky Derby will win $3.1 million. It is the second-richest race in North America, behind only the Breeders’ Cup Classic ($7 million). The inaugural Kentucky Derby in 1875 paid out only $2,850 to the winner and $200 to the runner-up. Today, that $2,850 winner’s purse would be worth $80,922.38 in purchasing power.

Aristides won that first Kentucky Derby, beating 14 horses. It was run at 1 ½ miles instead of today’s 1 ¼ miles, a length that was established later in 1896.

Secretariat still holds the Kentucky Derby track record at 1:59.40.The only other winner to break the two-minute mark is Monarchos in 2001 (1:59.97). The second-fastest time run in a Derby is by Sham (1:59.90), who lost to Secretariat by 2 ½ lengths.

The Twin Spires

Churchill Downs opened in 1875, and the famous Twin Spires grandstand was built in 1894-1895. The spires were designed by Joseph D. Baldez and were originally created for ornamental purposes as part of the grandstand. The Winners’ Circle is located directly below the grandstand, which is updated every year with the dates of the Kentucky Derby.

While the spires have not been there for every Kentucky Derby, they have become the iconic image tied to Churchill Downs, horse racing and the city of Louisville itself.

The Spires were part of a restoration project in 2002. Scaffolding was built around each spire, and interior walls were removed so engineers could access the structural support and determine how the structures had aged over 107 years. Only minor work was required to stabilize the existing supports.

The restoration cost $209,000 — which is far more than the original $40,000 spent to build them.

Casual race fans may wonder how the jockeys get their uniquely colored outfits for the Kentucky Derby. Their “silks” are designed by the horses’ owners, which helps fans and broadcasters easily identify horses during the race.

Wearing silks dates back to 1700s England. At that time, the uniforms were actually made out of silk, though they’re now mostly made of nylon and other fabrics that breathe easier and are more aerodynamic. But the name stuck.

Silks must be registered with The Jockey Club and renewed every year. No two silks can be the same, and navy blue cannot be used as it looks too much like black from a distance. Even with these stipulations, more than 30,000 designs are currently registered.

churchill downs tours 2023

Triple Crown winners Gallant Fox (1930) and Omaha (1935) both wore red polka-dots on their silks because they both had the same owner.

Secretariat’s blue-and-white checkerboard is famous in horse racing and is also used on the jerseys of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team.

Barbaro Statue Outside the Main Gate

Barbaro won the 2006 Kentucky Derby by 6 ½ lengths — the largest margin of victory in the Derby since 1946. He was only the sixth undefeated horse to win the Kentucky Derby at the time.

He suffered a broken leg in the Preakness Stakes and went through numerous surgeries in an attempt at rehabilitation. Tragically, his owners eventually had to euthanize him on January 29, 2007, after complications led to the decision that he couldn’t manage the pain anymore.

The statue in his honor was unveiled on April 26, 2009.

• The 400 roses are individually hand-sewn together to create the winner’s garland, which is 2.5 yards long, 14 inches wide and weighs around 40 pounds. There are more than 2,100 roses in the Winner’s Circle, and 250 rose bushes around the facility, along with 12,000 tulips.

• Three fillies (young females) have won the Kentucky Derby, but none have won since Winning Colors in 1988. Genuine Risk (1980) and Regret (1915) are the other fillies who have won the Kentucky Derby.

• Justify, who won the 144th Kentucky Derby, was the first winner in 136 years who never ran as a 2-year-old. He went on to win the Triple Crown.

Power Rankings: PGA Championship

Power Rankings

Change Text Size

Not unlike how many of the horses arrive for the annual Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs some 15 miles to its west, Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, is poised to host numerous thoroughbreds in top form for the 106th running of the PGA Championship.

A review of the course and other information is below the ranking of those projected to contend.

It’d be a curious opinion to want the sport’s top talents to descend at the second major of 2024 in form other than the current, so it’s a timely bonus that Valhalla will give all 156 entrants a terrific opportunity to stretch and showcase what they got.

This is the fourth edition of the PGA Championship on the Jack Nicklaus design. After testing as a par 72 in 1996 and 2000, it’s been a par 71 since Rory McIlroy prevailed in 2014. The field’s average that week was a modest 71.539, but that’s when the tournament was contested in August.

It’s late enough in the growing season this year for Valhalla to present its fully formed self, but it does so now capable of extending to 7,609 yards. That’s 151 yards longer than a decade ago, but the expectation is that it will again provide a fair and consistently strong exam. While visually striking in places, Valhalla’s setup as a proper stage is the narrative. The prepared will be rewarded on an exceptionally balanced course.

Because it’s a Nicklaus design, long hitters will be licking their chops off tees. With five par 4s tipping at 484 yards or longer piggybacking three par 5s, the driver will be a busy stick. Yet, in 2014, Valhalla surrendered just 278 yards on average in distance of all drives. That was 11th-lowest of all courses measured that season and respectful of the fact that greens average only 5,000 square feet. The formula favors course management over all alternatives. This is major, after all.

But make no mistake, confident drivers will feast. McIlroy prevailed in 2014 at 16-under 268 and was among five with four rounds in the 60s. He led the field in distance of all drives, total driving, Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and par-4 scoring.

McIlroy is among the 34 in this week’s field who competed here 10 years ago. The then-new, heat-tolerant T-1 bentgrass on the greens held its own in the muggy conditions at the time. It was a big deal because it was the first time the strain hosted a major. The darker-green surface is ready to touch 13 feet on the Stimpmeter this week; that is, if it wasn’t subject to persistent rain immediately in advance of and during the tournament.

There’s at least a slight risk of precipitation every day, although Thursday and Sunday are the early clubhouse leaders for cooperative conditions. Wind won’t be a significant factor at any time, so it’ll simply be a matter of dodging lightning and cloudbursts. Daytime highs might not hit 80 degrees until Saturday. Even with a warmup for the finale, it won’t be sweltering. If it’s soft, fairways will play wider but a blend of bluegrass and fescue trimmed to four inches will grab wayward strikes on either side.

In addition to a lifetime exemption into the tournament, the winner of the Wanamaker trophy will receive exemptions into the next five editions of each of the other three majors. He’ll also secure spots in the last two Signature Events of 2024 and the 2025 editions of The Sentry and THE PLAYERS Championship. His PGA TOUR membership exemption also will extend to the maximum five seasons through 2029.

7:00 p.m.: Mystik Dan wins Kentucky Derby 2024

Mystik Dan , trained by Kenny McPeek, has officially won the historic 150th Kentucky Derby.

In a photo finish, the horse — who entered the $5 million, Grade 1 race with 18-1 odds — covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.34.

Behind Mystik Dann were Sierra Leone and Forever Young. It was the first nose margin in a Derby since Grindstone beat Cavonnier in 1996. Sierra Leone also nosed out Forever Young — the Japanese contender — by a nose for second place.

The $5 million purse was the richest in Kentucky Derby history , surpassing the $3 million purse from 2019-23. The winner earned $3.1 million.

Shortly after the race, Mystik Dan trainer Kenny McPeek called jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. "one of the most underrated riders" during the NBC broadcast. "But, not anymore," he said.

6:38 p.m. More than 150,000 race fans in attendance for Kentucky Derby 150

It's official: 156,710 people are in attendance for the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter, from Churchill Downs communications director Darren Rogers.

The total makes it the most attended Derby since 2018. According to previous Courier Journal reporting, 157,813 people were in attendance that year.

5:30 p.m.: 21c's Steve Wilson: 'This is the time when we can really show off Kentucky'

Steve Wilson, owner of 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, was sporting an iconic suit for the 150th Run for the Roses, made by Louisville designer Gunnar Deatherage, a previous contestant on “Project Runway.”

The suit features a lining that depicts drawings of past Derbies. The sleeves are decorated in a 3D floral design made from recycled bottles, Wilson said.

After the Derby, the suit will be sent to the Kentucky Derby Museum where it will be on display.

Wilson, who was seated in the Churchill Downs Racetrack Mansion, said he loves the Derby because it’s an experience that makes people happy.

“This is the time when we can really show off Kentucky,” Wilson said. “This is the moment. I love Kentucky, I want it to be an iconic travel destination, you can taste good food, good bourbon and see good horses.”

4:20 p.m.: Celebrity spotting in the most exclusive areas of Churchill Downs on Derby Day

Looming high above the packed infield and the grandstand, celebrities took in Derby Day races from exclusive suites and clubs accessible only to the ultra-wealthy and well-connected.

In a tour of several of those exclusive areas, Courier Journal reporters spotted people influential in the worlds of politics, sports and entertainment.

At the Turf Club Terrace, country rock icon Kid Rock could be seen mixing with guests while first wearing a pink suit and later, a black tank top. His outfit was rounded out by a gold and a bedazzled belt of a steer’s skull.

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers could also be seen inside the Turf Club wearing a navy suit over a white shirt and sunglasses.

In a burst of yellow, legendary singer, songwriter and producer Smokey Robinson arrived in the club with his sunshine-colored entourage. Heads turned as they poured into the terrace flanked by security guards.

Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph , who stars in the ABC comedy “Abbott Elementary,” took her seat alongside a wall of windows overlooking the race track.

She was joined by country music singer Mickey Guyton.

University of Louisville football coach Jeff Brohm was also at the Turf Club, as well as UofL’s new men’s basketball coach Pat Kelsey.

U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey was inside a suite at the Finish Line Suites.

Each suite, which can hold up to 40 guests, starts at $295,000 per year for Oaks and Derby for a “multi-year agreement,” according to the Churchill Downs website.

Derby City Gaming Downtown, 401 W. Market St., is showing the races on a big screen and people can bet, drink, eat and have fun.

For $50, people get $25 in free play for slots machines, two free drinks and a 150th Kentucky Derby Program.

3:55 p.m.: Kentucky should reconsider use of 'My Old Kentucky Home' at Derby, McGarvey says

In an interview with The Courier Journal ahead of the 150th Kentucky Derby, Louisville Congressman Morgan McGarvey said the event's use of “My Old Kentucky Home,” a 19th-century song inspired by the abolitionist novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” that has, in recent years, faced controversy from critics over racist roots, should be reconsidered .

3:45 p.m.: U of L coaches make their Kentucky Derby picks

University of Louisville football coach Jeff Brohm and University of Louisville men's basketball coach Pat Kelsey shared their Derby horse picks in an interview with The Courier Journal ahead of the race.

"Well, this year for the Derby — I haven't been in a few years - I'm going to go with Dornoch," Brohm said. "I think it's going to start strong and finish strong and come by with a victory."

His second choice is Mystik Dan.

Kelsey, who was just named the new Louisville men's basketball coach in March, has a different selection.

"I'm heavy on Sierra Leone," said Kelsey. "I like Domestic Product and Just A Touch."

Kelsey added that he is already excited about next basketball season and is filling the roster now. Kelsey can already "feel the energy in the city."

- Eleanor McCrary

3:30 p.m.: Emmitt Smith: 'All the training comes together today'

Emmitt Smith’s outfit was adorned with some family flair. The interior of his light blue plaid suit jacket included photos of his children, mother and father. “They’re with me today,” he told on the Courier Journal on the 150th Kentucky Derby red carpet.

Smith, known as a NFL legend, has made the Derby a bit of a tradition, and shared a sense of admiration for the preparation from horses, trainers and jockeys that goes into a huge race.

“All the training comes together today,” he said. “And today we get to see some of the finest animals on the planet run around this track.”

3:21 p.m.: Rep. Morgan McGarvey makes Kentucky Derby 150 pick

U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey's Derby race pick is close to his family's heart.

"This one for us is all emotion this year," he explained, glancing at his wife, Chris. Her grandmother was an “incredible woman” named Marie. Chris and the McGarvey’s daughter have the middle name “Marie,” he said.

"So for us this year, the easy pick is Honor Marie."

The McGarveys are enjoying the 150th Derby at the Finish Line Suites. He also attended Kentucky Oaks, and said some of his friends on the U.S House Committee on Ways and Means gave him money to place bets.

"I went along with it,” he said, laughing. “None of us won."

3:20 p.m.: Kentucky Derby 2025 tickets now on sale

It’s never too early to start planning for next year’s Kentucky Derby.

According to a post on X, formerly Twitter, tickets for the 151st Run for the Roses, which will be on May 3, 2025, are available now.

People can pre-register for Derby and Oaks tickets at https://www.kentuckyderby.com/sign-up/ .

3:15 p.m.: 'I just want people to come and experience our great city and all the traditions'

Gia Combs, Miss Cosmos United States 2023 and a former Kentucky Derby Queen, and her mother, former University of Louisville basketball player Valerie Combs, were near the Clubhouse Gate just before Race 9 on the 150th Kentucky Derby Day.

“With this being 150, I just want people to come and experience our great city and all the traditions,” she said. “It’s great to welcome people who have never been here before.”

They’d just come from their Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority brunch with their friend Sharon Swisher, who was in town from San Antonio, and had watched more than 30 Kentucky Derby races at Churchill Down.

“I wouldn’t have missed this one for anything,” Swisher said. “Each Derby has a different vibe and a different feeling … There is nothing in the world like this.”

- Maggie Menderski

2:10 p.m.: Wynonna Judd arrives to sing National Anthem

Wynonna Judd stepped into Churchill Downs wearing a full white suit and top hat, ready to perform the national anthem ahead of the big race.

“I’m so excited,” Judd, who grew up in Ashland, told the Courier Journal on Friday during the Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala. “This is the 150th year. So, they knew who to pick in terms of patriotic and being a proud Kentuckian. It’s just number 1 on my list.”

The performance is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on NBC.

Previous singers of the national anthem at the Derby include Martina McBride, Rascal Flatts and Jo Dee Messina.

- Amanda Hancock

2 p.m.: 'So much more than I expected'

Roberta Tengerdy of Sarasota, Florida, had come to the 150th Kentucky Derby as part of a girls trip. Her husband, Tom, hadn’t come along, but he was very present in her first Run for the Roses. He’d helped design her whole look. He’d gone to Hobby Lobby and bought an assortment of ribbons and flowers to embellish her hat. He fastened more than a two dozen flowers on the underside of the brim, and he’d bedazzled a cigar box style purse with pictures of cherubs, small flowers, pom poms and beading. Since he couldn’t come to the Derby with her, he tucked two roses — one for each of them — inside the interior pocket of her purse.Tengerdy was enjoying the view from the upper deck of the new paddock just before the seventh race of the day. The whole morning had just been wonderful, she said.“It’s just more than I could have ever imagined,” Tengerdy said of the experience. “I don’t know what I imagined, but it’s just so much more than I expected.”

- Maggie Menderski

1:35 p.m.: Health professionals on hand for Derby 150

Dominic Morales started his Kentucky Derby Day hours before the first horses ran in Race 1.

Morales is one of half a dozen Norton Sports Health athletic trainers serving as trackside medical professionals available on race day.

This is the first year athletic trainers and physicians are required, as part of a regulation by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority . HISA is the agency that oversees the health and safety of horses with uniform rules across the thoroughbred racing industry.

Athletic trainers, considered the health care professionals of sports sidelines, are at Churchill Downs to support the health care of jockeys, as well as also Derby 150 attendees. There are three first aid tents — in the clubhouse, the executive gate and the infield at the fourth turn — for basic first-aid care.

Morales, a former collegiate AT, as well as Tiffany Haub, contributed in the creation of Churchill Down's emergency action plan, or what to do in the event of an emergency, which the world saw in action when Damar Hamlin collapsed during a Monday Night Football game in January 2023.

1:20 p.m.: Travis Kelce spotted in crowd at Churchill Downs

Super Bowl Champion Travis Kelce is officially at Churchill Downs for the 150th Kentucky Derby — but so far there's no sign of global superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end was seen arriving at the track, wearing a lightly-striped white suit, navy floral tie and coordinating navy hat, complete with a feather. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, a photo shows Kelce amid a sea of attendees.

There had been speculation for months over whether the NFL star and “Shake It Off” singer would saddle up and attend the "Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports."

1:10 p.m.: A crowing achievement for Derby 150

Chris Lowber is one of many people who went all out for 150 years of Derby. As Lowber walked around the infield, he wore a cardboard replica of the Twin Spires on top of his head to celebrate this year’s anniversary.

It isn't his first Kentucky Derby though and said he's been to many as a Louisville resident. Lowber said that he’s worn this replica for many years because he wants to embrace the festivities and celebrations.

The cardboard replica also features artwork from Lowbers’ students, and he said it took almost 10 hours to complete the piece. When asked how he wears the replica on his head all day, Lowber assured that he takes breaks.

Like many Derby attendees, Lowber is placing his bet on tonight’s big race and hopes that Forever Young takes the Triple Crown.

1 p.m.: Ted Cruz appears at Churchill Downs for Derby 150

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz was spotted at Churchill Downs for at least his third time at the historic track.

The Texas Republican previously attended the Kentucky Derby in 2016 after dropping out of that year’s presidential race. And he was back the next year with his wife, Heidi.

In a post on X , formerly Twitter, Cruz called the Derby “a great American tradition.”

12:50 p.m.: 'It's just incredible'

Ken and Sandy Kunkel traveled to the Kentucky Derby to celebrate Ken’s 70th Birthday with Sandy’s wine group “The Swirl Girls.”“Thank you so much for coming to the party,” their group said, anytime someone spotted his birthday sash and wished Ken a “Happy Birthday!” He said he couldn’t ask for anything more for his birthday, but a kiss from his wife — who promptly gave him a smooch just outside the Clubhouse Gate. Ken felt “spoiled” for having such a wonderful birthday.

“It’s the 150th and today is my 70th birthday,” he beamed, while holding a mint julep cup. “It’s just incredible.”

12:30 p.m.: Firefighter Bryce Carden honored at track

Two months after he helped rescue a woman from her truck as it dangled from the George Clark Memorial Bridge , Louisville firefighter Bryce Carden was honored at Churchill Downs ahead of the 150th Kentucky Derby.

Carden was invited to the race as a special guest of WDRB-TV, which produced a presentation that played from the track's video boards Saturday morning.

Carden is a member of Rescue Company 2, which responded to the bridge call around noon March 1. Authorities say Trevor Branham of Jeffersonville was driving a Chevrolet truck at an excessive speed and "weaving in and out of traffic" when he struck several vehicles on the bridge, including the tractor trailer that broke through the guardrail and hung over the Ohio River for about 40 minutes before its driver was rescued.

Watch WDRB's presentation for Carden here .

12:15 p.m.: NBC, Churchill Downs extend broadcast partnership

Churchill Downs Incorporated and NBC Sports on Saturday announced an extension of their partnership that will see the Kentucky Derby televised by NBC through 2032.

NBC Sports first televised the Kentucky Derby in 2001.

“As we celebrate the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs is proud to extend the relationship with NBC Sports,” Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen said. “As our media partner for the last 23 years, NBC has artfully captured the most exciting two minutes in sports and the spectacle of the senses that surrounds it.”

The extension includes multi-platform rights to the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks and Derby and Oaks Day programming, which will be presented on NBC, Peacock, USA Network and other NBCUniversal platforms.

National coverage of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby will begin at 2:30 p.m. on NBC and Peacock.

Noon: More celebrities walk the red carpet for Kentucky Derby 2024

Dozens of famous faces are expected to walk the red carpet at Churchill Downs Saturday ahead of race time. Follow along with our reporters in the field.

11:40 a.m.: 'Call Her Daddy' host Alex Cooper, 'Hot Mess' host Alix Earle talk Derby in the Infield

Alex Cooper, host for the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, and Alix Earle, the podcast host for “Hot Mess,” talked to Kentucky Derby attendees on the Infield’s main stage on Saturday morning. The two programs operate under the “Unwell” podcast network, and a few dozen people gathered around the stage to listen to their Q&A.

It was the first time coming to Derby for the two high-profile influencers and have been here throughout the week to interact with fans. Earl also attended the Sports Illustrated Revel at the Races party on Friday.

Earle said she’s placing her bet on Sierra Leone as the Triple Crown winner, while Cooper said she still didn’t know where she would be placing her bets.

- Hanna Pinski

11:30 a.m.: Celebrities start to walk the red carpet at Churchill Downs

Andrea Canning of "Dateline NBC" was the first celebrity to walk the red carpet Saturday ahead of the big race. Canning said she loved the intimacy of the Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala on Friday night and wanted to get to Churchill Downs early Saturday to look at all the fashion.

"There have been some hits and misses but overall, the fashion is amazing,“ she said. “I am definitely investigating the fashion, not so much the horse racing.”

- Kirby Adams

11:22 a.m.: 'There’s nothing else like this in the country'

Denise Bautista, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, wore dress and purse made of fabric roses and a necklace featuring the Kentucky Derby symbol, as she stood in the Woodford Reserve Paddock Plaza just before the first race on Saturday. The Kentucky Derby has been around for more than half the history of this country, she explained, genuinely thrilled to be back beneath the iconic Twin Spires for this historic moment.

"You see first timers and old timers, and everybody has that look of just ‘oh my God, we’re here,’” she said. "There’s nothing else like this in the country."

A few years ago, Bautista lucked into Kentucky Derby tickets just two weeks before the event. She had always planned to go at least once in her life, but what she didn’t plan for was falling in love with Kentucky. This year marks her fourth Kentucky Derby. She and her husband have enjoyed Louisville, the bourbon culture and the Kentucky Derby so much over the past few years that they’re hoping to buy a home here.

She had traveled to Kentucky three other times this year to participate in festivities leading up to the 150 milestone.

“If you miss some of that, you’re missing the warm-up to the event,” she said. “I love it, I actually talked him into it this year, we’re going to start looking for a place out here.”

11:01 a.m.: Puppies predict 150th Kentucky Derby winner with Jimmy Fallon on 'The Tonight Show'

Sierra Leone was predicted to be the winner of the 150th Kentucky Derby during a special edition of Puppy Predictors on NBC's "The Tonight Show" on Friday.

Host and comedian Jimmy Fallon, who will appear at Churchill Downs Saturday to help Ford give away a vehicle to a lucky fan, had to review slow camera footage since the race was tight between two puppies representing contenders Sierra Leone and Dornoch.

Even though he was not the winner, Resilience, who Fallon described as “the longshot,” stole the comedian’s heart.

“That is the most chill puppy I’ve ever seen in my life,” Fallon said of the pup. “I love you, Resilience.”

10:27 a.m.: Rain could be in the forecast again for Derby Day

Just hours ahead of the race, the National Weather Service in Louisville predicts Louisville has a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m and patchy fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, skies will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 80 degrees. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon, according to the seven-day forecast.

Saturday night has a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 p.m. The area is expected to be partly cloudy, with a low around 64 degrees and a southwest wind around 6 mph.

'The Derby Dozen': With racing deaths in mind, what to know as horses return to Churchill

churchill downs tours 2023

The count of horse deaths rose until it hit a dozen.

A Derby dozen.

That's when Churchill Downs made the historic decision to shut down racing on its track and review its surface.

Now, nine months after the famed track's halt, horses return to training on the dirt this week ahead of the 150th Kentucky Derby.

What happened prior to the Kentucky Derby with horse deaths?

When the gates swung open on Derby Day 2023, the race marked 50 years since Secretariat's Kentucky Derby victory and the beginning of his eventual Triple Crown title.

But it was overshadowed by the death of seven racehorses leading up to post time for the "fastest two minutes in sports," including Derby contender Wild on Ice during a training accident on April 27 , and two horses that suffered catastrophic injuries on Derby Day.

In all, a dozen horses would die before, in a historic move, the thoroughbred course shut down the track to racing to do a "top-to-bottom" review of its practices and its racing surface.

How often do horses break down in a 'normal' year?

There's a term for a horse collapsing on the track. It's called a "breakdown." The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) is the federal agency tasked with overseeing the health and safety of thoroughbreds.

Racing thoroughbreds at tracks within HISA's jurisdiction saw 1.23 racing fatalities per 1,000 starts in 2023. That's a slight decrease from the 1.25 deaths per 1,000 starts in 2022. Tracks outside of HISA's purview, though, saw a 32.5% increase in 2023, at 1.63 racing fatalities per 1,000 starts, according to the agency.

While racing fatalities have slowly decreased since the Equine Injury Database launched in 2009 (when it was a 2 per 1,000 starts), racetracks have continued to experience "clusters" of deaths, like at Santa Anita in 2019, when 22 horses died in less than two months .

The database includes only deaths of horses recorded while racing, not ones who may have died off-track, like when Code of Kings flipped in the paddock in 2023 after becoming fixated on lights from a DJ booth at Churchill and broke his neck.

What was done at Churchill Downs to ensure horse safety?

In June, before its announcement that it would shut down the track, Churchill Downs announced three safety initiatives. It would later reverse one : a payout bonus regardless of finish.

Two initiatives will remain in place heading into this year's lead-up to the Derby : restricting the number of starts per horse to four during a rolling eight-week period; and ineligibility standards for poor performance for a horse beaten by more than 12 lengths in five consecutive starts.

The track also created a backside safety committee, made up of trainers who meet weekly with the track crew to discuss any changes. Longtime trainer Tom Van Berg is on that committee.

"More than anything, it's trying to dial in some of the practices of the track crew to say 'This works for the horses, this doesn't' in response to various weather conditions," Van Berg said. "Whether it's wind, rain, heat, how can we try to get ahead of addressing a problem on the track instead of after the fact and kind of know why it became that way."

Did anything change with the dirt track?

Besides the safety initiatives, track superintendent Jamie Richardson put new harrows on the tractors that rake the track, following recommendations by HISA.

A report released by HISA in September confirmed the presence of rocks in the track.

Churchill Downs equine medical director Will Farmer said the track also instituted a "bucket brigade."

"We did have a daily crew that walked the racetrack every single day from there on out," Farmer said. "Our trainers have commented the vast improvement that they have seen on the surface."

The point of the bucket brigade, a trainer told The Courier Journal, has always been to pick up any rocks that find their way onto the track. Farmer told The Courier Journal, though, that the stoppage of racing at the famed track "had nothing to do with the rocks on the racetrack."

In the HISA report, Churchill Downs stated it believes it "resolved the issues of rocks on the racetrack" and would sift the dirt in 2024 "if needed."

"I know they were adding more material on as recently as last week, but didn't see if they had the sifter out," Van Berg said when asked about the dirt surface. "I think they're going by every safety measure you would want them to go through."

How is the new turf track at Churchill Downs?

Churchill Downs announced the installation of a new $10 million turf course , with a state-of-the-art irrigation and drainage system for the 2022 Spring Meet. When it launched, CDI suspended racing on the course for two weeks , following the breakdown of Gingrich, a 3-year-old colt, so the course could "develop its new root system."

Then in 2023, it continued to move turf races to the dirt in its fall meet before switching all races carded for the turf strictly to the dirt for the final three days of the meet when the thoroughbreds appeared to be losing footing on the surface.

"Whether it was the horses slipping on the surface or surface slipping away from them, I never did get a definite answer on that," Van Berg told The Courier Journal. "I didn’t run a single horse on the grass course last year because I wasn't comfortable with it."

Churchill Downs has spent the winter with lamps and tarps on the track hoping for accelerated growth.

Van Berg said he also spoke with the crew who said they did injections of sand into the turf because the roots were having "a tough time grabbing a hold of the surface so they're trying to put a little more grittier material, so the roots could grab on better."

As for the current quality of the turf track, Van Berg said, "you're never going to really know until you get horses to go over it and over it at speed. It can look as pretty as you want to the outside eye, but once you get a horse over it, you'll know what you're dealing with."

What are they saying about track safety now?

In January, Churchill announced Dr. Dana Stead as an equine safety and integrity veterinarian .

Stead previously served as the racing veterinarian for multiple California-based racetracks, including Santa Anita Park

Stead, Farmer and veterinarians across the nation will have access to medical records of different racing jurisdictions, a new rule under HISA.

Prior to 2023, veterinarians in Kentucky were not allowed to access medical records for a horse when they raced in, say, California.

For instance, trainers could race horses in Kentucky at Churchill Downs, Ellis Park in Henderson or Turfway in Florence, but those records wouldn't previously have been accessible to veterinarians at racetracks at Belterra Park in Cincinnati or Horseshoe Downs in Indianapolis.

"What we have seen on a pre-race exam is a moment in time," Farmer said. "Having access to medical records from across the country through HISA can complete the story on what you’re seeing in that moment of time. Many times, that’s to the trainer's benefit."

Ranking the Contenders in a PGA Championship Worthy of Another Kentucky Classic

Gary van sickle | 19 hours ago.

Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele co-lead heading to Sunday at the PGA Championship.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The man in red knew what he was doing.

Steve Buttleman is Churchill Downs’s official bugler and normally plays “Call to the Post” as part of the annual pomp and ceremony before the Kentucky Derby, the famous horse race held just up the road earlier this month.

Saturday, Buttleman delivered the rousing tune at Valhalla Golf Club instead. His prescient performance was a big reason the PGA Championship’s third round felt more like a horse race than a golf tournament. Plus, there’s something about that red jacket with the big black lapels. (It’s a primal thing that makes me want to get a bet down.)

The other reasons?

The race to the finish was a birdie- and eagle-fest as Valhalla offered little defense—15 players are in double-figures under par through 54 holes. (Which Korn Ferry Tour tournament is this, again?)

There was dramatic jockeying for position—top-ranked Scottie Scheffler fell off his mount by playing the first four holes in 4 over par while Shane Lowry shot 62 and narrowly missed a major-championship record 61 when his birdie putt stayed left on the final hole. Lowry came from nowhere to storm into a tie for fourth place while Scheffler vanished from the leaderboard’s first page. Other names vaulting onto the leaderboard included Lee Hodges, Austin Eckroat and Taylor Moore. (Which Korn Ferry Tour tournament is this again? Or did I already ask that?)

There are 16 players within six shots of the lead. This PGA Championship is still wide open. Who’s got the horsepower to finish it off? Let’s check our Racing Form …

The co-leaders

More Kawabell (Collin Morikawa, jockey): A putting grip adjustment revived this two-time major champion’s game this week. After a scratchy first nine, Morikawa finished strong, holing a clutch birdie at the 15th and another at 18 to get a piece of the lead. He’s been there, won that (2020 PGA, 2021 British Open). That makes him a slight favorite. Also, he exudes confidence.

Mister X (Xander Schauffele, jockey):  What do you do for an encore after an opening 62 ? Scrape out a pair of 68s and let the rest of the field back into the tournament, which is how you manage to not win a major. Birdies at 10 and 14 moved him strongly in front, then he made an ugly double bogey from thick grass behind the 15th green and the field closed ranks on him. A clutch birdie-birdie rally on the closing holes got him into Sunday’s final pairing. He’s got an Olympic gold medal but to get his breakthrough major, Schauffele has to outrun six of the world’s best. That 62 seems like a long time ago already.

The chasers

Celtic Pride (Shane Lowry, jockey): The hefty Irishman enjoyed the putting round of his life Saturday with nine birdies and 130 feet worth of putts holed. It’s always supposed to be difficult to back up a low round with another good one but Lowry became an all-time Irish hero when he won the Open Championship in Northern Ireland. A PGA Championship pales compared to that pressure, which was knowing he’d never pay for a drink again in his native country if he won. Trails by 2.

Pass the Pepper (Sahith Theegala, jockey): A college superstar at Pepperdine, Theegala has one win on the PGA Tour but shown signs of so much more. He looked recovered from a recent rib injury Saturday, especially when he holed a circus flop shot for birdie from the back of the 15th green. He’s a star in the making. Trails by 1.

Sahith Theegala with the magic touch! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/jYu5dZcig0 — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 18, 2024

Gargantuan (Bryson DeChambeau, jockey): A soft Valhalla was supposed to favor big hitters and no one in golf hits bombs like DeChambeau. He was merely lurking until a dramatic eagle chip-in at the 18th hole lifted him to within a shot of the lead. It’s easy to forget he won a U.S. Open fairly easily five years ago on a much tougher test, Winged Foot. DeChambeau has big game. Trails by 2.

Norway Yes Way (Viktor Hovland, jockey): Can a Norwegian guy make a Mongolian Reversal? After struggling this year, Hovland went back to his old swing coach and made a startling return to form this week, following his first-round 68 with back-to-back 66s. Just that quickly, he resembled last year’s FedEx Cup champ again. He birdied three of the last four holes to sneak into a tie for fourth. If the Best Player Who Hasn’t Won Major Yet isn’t Schauffele, it’s Hovland. And he’s got fewer bad memories than Schauffele. Trails by 2.

Top contenders

Just In Just Out (Justin Rose, jockey): It’s been 10 years since Rory McIlroy won a major but it’s been longer for Rose, whose only major title was the 2013 U.S. Open. He got sucked into a birdie vortex Saturday with playing partner Lowry and, indeed, looked 10 years younger as he racked up eight birdies. He’s a Ryder Cup warhorse and at 43, he’s not too old to pull this off. Phil Mickelson won a PGA at 50 … if anyone still remembers him. Trails by 3.

Left Turn On Green (Robert MacIntyre, jockey): Americans discovered this lefthanded Scot last year during his star turn at the Ryder Cup. He’s won twice on the DP World Tour and he, too, hits it long. He was eighth in driving distance in Round 3. This is his biggest exam—well, next to that Ryder Cup. Trails by 3.

The dark horse

Burma Shaver (Dean Burmester, jockey): Your obvious question: Who is Dean Burmester? He’s a 34-year-old South African who quietly won four times in Europe and once recently in LIV Golf. He’s been playing well on the LIV circuit, in fact, and he’s a big hitter, averaging 322.1 yards per drive in the third round, third-longest in the field. Can he really outrun the thoroughbreds on the leaderboard? This isn’t LIV. Trails by 4.

The long shots

Bluegrass Boy (Justin Thomas, jockey): Kentucky native Thomas has the crowd urging him on. He made the shot of the day, a thrilling flop at the 14th green that hit the pin with speed and dropped and sent the gallery into a frenzy. He is the crowd favorite and he’s riding the emotion. Good news: It’s doable. Bad news: He needs at least a 63. Trails by 5.

UNBELIEVABLE! Justin. Thomas. The Kentucky guy holes out for birdie! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/YVeNslCW37 — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 18, 2024

Hooray for Holywood (Rory McIlroy, jockey): That 2014 PGA Championship win 10 years ago looks as if it will remain McIlroy’s most recent major title a while longer. A second-round 71 was a dagger but he was poised to recover with five birdies in an eight-hole stretch. Then he bogeyed 14 and 16 and dug a deep hole. Another opportunity lost, probably, unless McIlroy does something truly Rory-esque … like shoot 60 or 61. Trails by 7.

Arrested Development (Scottie Scheffler, jockey ): A run at a Daily Double and a calendar-year Grand Slam evaporated by the fourth hole as Scheffler couldn’t bounce back from his second-round ordeal , still shaken by the experience. Or was it that jailhouse sandwich he downed? Hard to say. Trails by 8.

Punishment (Brooks Koepka, jockey): A LIV win following a dismal Masters showing earned Koepka a spot as a pre-PGA favorite. But on a Saturday when low scores were rampant, Koepka racked up three bogeys, a double bogey and no birdies in his first 12 holes and got trampled. His trainers worked him hard after his Masters disappointment . Guess who’s going to get a second helping of whip-ass? Fun times. Trails by 11.

Gary Van Sickle

GARY VAN SICKLE

Van Sickle has covered golf since 1980, following the tours to 125 men’s major championships, 14 Ryder Cups and one sweet roundtrip flight on the late Concorde. He is likely the only active golf writer who covered Tiger Woods during his first pro victory, in Las Vegas in 1996, and his 81st, in Augusta. Van Sickle’s work appeared, in order, in The Milwaukee Journal, Golf World magazine, Sports Illustrated (20 years) and Golf.com. He is a former president of the Golf Writers Association of America. His knees are shot, but he used to be a half-decent player. He competed in two national championships (U.S. Senior Amateur, most recently in 2014); made it to U.S. Open sectional qualifying once and narrowly missed the Open by a scant 17 shots (mostly due to poor officiating); won 10 club championships; and made seven holes-in-one (though none lately). Van Sickle’s golf equipment stories usually are based on personal field-testing, not press-release rewrites. His nickname is Van Cynical. Yeah, he earned it.

Preakness Stakes 2024 odds, horses, jockeys and complete bettor’s guide

An inside look at how the 149th Preakness Stakes will play out:

Current form: Broke from the gate last of 10 in the Blue Grass, spotted the field about 10 lengths before passing tired horses to be fifth at odds of 181-1, well back of Sierra Leone.

Worth a wager?: No. He’s 1-for-12 overall and that win was earned on synthetics. Believe in horse/jockey combos? It was the only time Joe Bravo was aboard. Working well in the a.m. It’s the p.m. that’s the problem. Last of eight.

Current form: Took the New York route to Kentucky but never made it to Churchill Downs. Won the Withers by a nose, then a distant fifth in the Wood Memorial.

Worth a wager?: Rider change to Irad Ortiz Jr. will stir betting interest but there are stronger stretch runners in here and his résumé is thin. Thicker when it is wet — 2-for-2 over the mud. He ain’t heavy, he’s seventh.

Current form: Won the Louisiana Derby after running last of 11 down the backstretch. That successful blueprint didn’t work in the congested “Run for the Roses,” and he finished a troubled fourth behind the three-horse win photo.

Worth a wager?: One of three who ran in the first jewel. Flavien Prat has made one Preakness start. Won it with Rombauer. No traffic excuses here with the field set at eight. We are giving him the green light. Winner.

Current form: Ran third, a half-dozen lengths back of Muth in the Arkansas. Five weeks later he won a photo finish for the ages . Took an inside trek and got his nose down to hold off the fast-closing Sierra Leone and Forever Young.

Worth a wager?: Pimlico officials were relieved when Kenny McPeek gave the OK to run back after two weeks. Muth wasn’t in Kentucky and he scratched here. Does his absence open the door for a Triple Crown threat? We’ve got Dan third.

Current form: Big rebound. Finished an up-the-track seventh behind Sierra Leone in the Blue Grass. Tightened to one turn and responded by winning the Pat Day Mile.

Worth a wager?: D. Wayne Lukas has won the Preakness six times. The first was when dinosaurs roamed the earth, way back in 1980 with Codex. This Arrogate-sired gray may have distance issues. We will place him fifth.

Current form: Broke sharply in the Kentucky Derby and argued the lead into the clubhouse turn. And then … he vanished. Thoroughly disappointing after his surprising second between Muth and Mystik Dan in the Arkansas.

Worth a wager?: Got an early call from track announcer Larry Collmus at Churchill Downs. Can’t recall if I heard his name again. Believe this D. Wayne Lukas colt will finish with his stablemate. A length back in sixth.

Current form: Lightly raced. Three starts. One win, but third, only 1 ³/₄ lengths back of late-kicking Catching Freedom in Louisiana.

Worth a wager?: Chad Brown has won this race twice. Cloud Computing and Early Voting were both lightly raced as well. With Muth out, Tyler Gaffalione, fined for putting a hand on Forever Young in the Derby, may dance with Imagination early. Shakes him off. Gets caught by Catching Freedom. Second.

Current form: Won the San Felipe by a head, then was a neck short in a thin edition of the Santa Anita Derby. The winner, Stronghold, was seventh, 11 lengths back of Catching Freedom at Churchill Downs.

Worth a wager?: The banned Bob Baffert revenge tour took a hit when Muth spiked a fever. But Imagination is more than a rabbit. I imagine Frankie Dettori will have him forwardly placed with Tuscan Gold before giving way. A respectable fourth.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

churchill downs tours 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

churchill downs tours 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

churchill downs tours 2023

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
