Hassan - 182 Km from Bangalore

Another attraction which is a must-visit for you near Bangalore under 200 km  is Hassan. Hassan is found 187kms from Bangalore lying in the Malnad and Maidan regions of Karnataka. The city gets its name from its managing deity Goddess Hassanamba which in Kanana dialect signify 'Grinning mother'. Inferable from its old structures and landmarks, this city is frequently called as the sanctuary - engineering capital of Karnataka. The place is called Hassan after the Goddess "Haasanamba", the goddess and directing god of the town. Lalbagh is one of the oldest botanical gardens in India and is also a major tourist attraction in South India. Located in South Bengaluru, the Lalbagh Botanical Garden is not only one of the largest botanical gardens in India, but also the first of its kind, with planned routes, glasshouses and ornamental flowers growing throughout the property. The garden itself is spread over an area of 240 acres and its construction was commissioned by the famous ruler Hyder Ali. It was finally completed by his son- Tipu Sultan- who designed the gardens keeping in mind the beautiful gardens of Sira in Tumkur District in Karnataka.Lalbagh is home to exotic flowers that were imported by the Sultan from countries like France, Persia, Arabia, Afghanistan, etc. Therefore, flowers that were previously never seen in India were first witnessed in this historical garden. Trees that were imported by Tipu Sultan from all over the world can still be found growing here.Apart from the exotic trees, visitors can also catch sight of some rare birds such as the Myna, pond heron, purple moorhen, parakeets, Brahminy kites, the common egret and much more. Apart from the stunning flora and fauna of the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, it has another striking attraction, which is the Lalbagh rock. This rock, which is said to be over 3000 years old, is one of the oldest rocks in the world and can be found in the center of the garden.

Bangalore Palace

In the technology-driven, futuristic Silicon Valley of India, monuments of historical significance boasting of a glorious past are also abundant. The historical heritage of the city is so magnificent and eminent that it rises to prominence on its own. One such landmark is the Tudor style Bangalore Palace. The Palace is a perfect representation of the lavishness and splendour with which India's most resilient dynasties ruled. Famous for its opulent architecture and amusement activities, the Palace is visited by several visitors every day. The colossal Palace boasts of massive courtyards, bright interiors, kingly grounds, splendid spiral staircases, stately towers and a luscious garden in a proud display of posh regality.Anyone who admires classic architecture and artistry would be delighted to experience it first hand at this Palace. It also houses an amusement park in its enclave to the delight of many younger visitors. Having been a private residence to the Wodeyar family, Bangalore palace offers a linear perspective into the royal life of the forepassed era. It is plush with a vibrant and varied collection of ancient royal artefacts, paraphernalia, hunting trophies and family photos. The Palace houses some of the most famous paintings of the 19th Century, including the works of one of India's most celebrated artists Raja Ravi Verma. The Palace grounds very often become venues for concerts and festivals. World-renowned artists like Enrique and Guns N' Roses have graced the palace grounds with their talent and presence. The Palace hence combines the richness and luxury of royal history with the vivacious and exuberant demeanour of the youth. Bangalore Palace HistoryOriginally a property of Reverend J Garrett, the principal of a school in the cantonment town at that time, the area where the Palace is now located was purchased from him by the British Guardians of Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar for 40,000 rupees. The construction of the palace began in the year 1874. Mr John Cameron of Lalbagh was assigned the task of landscaping Palace along with its surroundings. The complete construction of the palace was completed in the year, 1878.The Palace saw many additions and modifications in its architecture in subsequent years. Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added a few portions like the twin external staircase, the platform for musicians etc. outside the Durbar Hall. In 1970, HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar transferred ownership of the property to two companies, Chamundi Hotels and Shree Venkateshwara Real Estate Enterprises. However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. The ground floor also contains a beautifully decorated ballroom. The first floor of the Palace has a distinct chamber known as the Durbar Hall attached to an ornate staircase. This hall is famous for the enormous elephant head that is mounted in it and its gothic style tinted glass windows.

2 Days in Gokarna, Karnataka: Top Things to Do in Gokarna

Last updated on

Gokarna, a small village by the Arabian Sea in northern Karnataka, is a revered pilgrimage site for Shaivites and sees both domestic tourists and foreigners in search of spirituality and beach vacations. Spend 2 days in Gokarna for a taste of this small town. To find out about the top things to do in Gokarna, scroll down!

GOKARNA, KARNATAKA / INDIA

There are two sides to Gokarna: one, the pilgrimage side which devotees from around the country visit to offer prayers at the revered Atmalinga of the Mahabaleshwar Temple, and the other, the touristy side teeming with young Indians and western tourists looking for a quieter, more secluded alternative to Goa.

The sandy beaches of Gokarna are hidden beyond the folds of the lush Western Ghats. Trails of rich red soil thread through tropical jungles and meander over beaches and cliffs overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the Arabian Sea. Autorickshaws, your only mode of transport if you do not have a car, zap up and down the single strip of asphalt that winds through jungles and scrubland, past eateries and lodges, and runs into the little town with its clutch of temples, shops, and traditional settlements. There are not many things to do in Gokarna, and perhaps that is what draws travellers to Gokarna. Laze on the beaches, swim in the tropical waters, hike along the cliffs and beaches, explore the temple town, search the many mythological stories that this town is steeped in, and indulge in local meals and glorious sunsets: welcome to Gokarna.

WARNING! Gokarna has a documented drug problem. Be wary of peddlers who target unsuspecting tourists, especially Westerners, around town. Most beaches are patrolled by the local police who conduct random spot checks.

ETYMOLOGY OF GOKARNA : Gokarna literally means cow’s ( go ) ear ( karn ). It is believed that Shiva emerged from the ear of a cow here. The cow is a symbol of the earth and represents nourishment and sustenance. It is also possible that the name was derived from the ear-shaped confluence of the Gangavali and Aghanashini rivers.

2 Days in Gokarna: Itinerary

Day 1: beach trek, sunset from kudle beach, day 2: visit the mahabeshlwar temple, explore the town, how to reach gokarna, when to visit gokarna, where to stay in gokarna, where to eat in gokarna.

2 Days in Gokarna: Top Things to Do in Gokarna

AM // Beach Trek

The beach hike is perhaps the most exciting thing to do in Gokarna and whether you are spending 2 days in Gokarna or more, you must absolutely hike all or part of this route! The trail threads along the hillside and promises stellar views of the Arabian Sea. The palette— the lush greenery of the Western Ghats, the dusty brick-red soil, the black rocks that jut along the coast, the ochre sands, the cloud-flecked blue sky dipping into the azure waters— is mesmerizing.

From north to south, the primary beaches of Gokarna are the Gokarna main beach , Kudle beach , Om beach , Half-moon beach , Paradise beach , and Belekan beach . The trail that skirts the mountains and threads through jungles, up slippery rocks, and through gorgeous beaches lined with swaying coconut trees will take you all the way from Kudle beach to Paradise beach and onwards to Belekan beach. If you are interested, you can go all the way to Tadadi Port and then hire a boat to Nirvana beach on the other side of the Aganashini’s estuary and then finally back to where you are staying.

We did the stretch from Om beach to Half-moon beach one morning; we had attempted to trek all the way to Paradise beach but were unable to find the proper trail. It goes without saying that it helps to have a guide. Zostel, Gokarna organizes guides treks along this trail; check with them if they allow non-guests to join. The next day, we did the Om beach to Kudle beach stretch. The views are magnificent— sparkling blue-grey water skirts the monumental mountainside and melts into the bright blue horizon– but the tropical sun is unforgiving.

If you intend to do the whole route, start at dawn. Pack enough water and some snacks because the shacks on Om beach and Half-moon beach do not serve breakfast before 8:30-9 am. Wear trekking shoes with a good grip because you will have to navigate steep slopes and slippery rocks along the way. If you go all the way to Nirvana Beach, you can have lunch at one of the shacks there. Else, there are a few shacks on Half-moon beach and Belekan beach. On the way back to Kudle beach or Om beach, you might be able to spot dolphins near the lighthouse! We spotted a couple of them and the boatman mentioned that they are usually spotted in the morning and around sunset.

Paradise and Half-moon beaches are totally secluded and can be reached only by boat or hike.

PM // Sunset and Dinner at Kudle Beach

Camping is another top thing to do in Gokarna! If you are planning to camp, you have to book ahead with a team. If you are camping at Paradise or Half-moon beach, chances are your trek guide has organized dinner for you but if you are staying at Om beach, skip the overhyped restaurant of Namaste Café and head to Little Paradise Inn on Kudle Beach. Settle down with a bottle of chilled beer and watch the sunset. Then order dinner! We had the butter garlic calamari, a plate of falafels, and some spicy chilly chicken and each dish was delicious! Autos are available until 11 pm if you are lodging elsewhere.

AM // Temples of Gokarna | Laze

Start day two of your 2 days in Gokarna trip with a swim. Gokarna is increasingly becoming popular with domestic tourists— it has been a fixture on the neo-hippie map since Om beach with its characteristic Om-shaped outline spilled the secrecy of the region— and if you want to swim in peace, arrive early before the tourists and of course, the headache-inducing sun. Sunbeds are a rarity on all the beaches but if you are on Om beach, you can lounge under the broad leaves of sea-grape trees.

A visit to the revered Mahabaleshwar Temple which is known for the Atmalingam , is one of the many things to do in Gokarna. Head there after breakfast. There are many legends, such as this one, as to how the Atmalingam , atma means soul, came to reside here. Nearby is the Koti Teertha, a tank whose holy waters are said to absolve one of all sins.

John Fryer’s account of the Koti Teertha dates back to his travels in India in the 17th century. He writes, “ We were carried by the Tide of the People that bore that way out of this place, to a large oblong stone Tank, with Descents to go down all about it ; in the middle a neat Pagod supported on Four Marble Pillars ; here during this Festival at Evenings, are blazing a Lecque of Lamps. In this all of both Sexes Wash and Present Rice and Mony to the Brachmins; and the Fish which Swim here frequently receive their Benevolence, being so Tame you may catch them with your Hands; to be the death of one of these is considered piaculare “. Even the rath that he described can still be seen in Gokarna. He wrote, “ At the upper- end of the’ High-street were two great moving Pageants drawn on Wheels, two Stories high, with a Cupulo on the top, which was stuck round full of Streamers of Orient Colours .”

Note that if you are not Hindu, chances are that you won’t be allowed inside the temple premises. You can either explore the town— stop for a second breakfast of South-Indian style dosas and a glass of fresh pineapple juice— or practice your flânerie skills at a beach shack. The beaches— with their coconut and sea-grape trees, the bunches of bright red hibiscus unbothered by the heat, the cacophony of selfie-clicking tourists and children enthralled by the vastness of the Arabian sea, hawker stalls selling colourful knick-knacks and handicrafts (the kinds associated with hippies in Goa’s flea markets), the colourful boats bobbing in the cheerful heat, the stands of pineapple and tender coconuts— throb with life. You can often spot artists and yoga enthusiasts on the beach.

PM // Lunch at Fishland/Halfway Home, Sunset at Gokarna Main Beach

Our favorite thing to do in Gokarna was to try the local food! If seafood is your jam, head to Open House Fishland where a local family will treat you to Uttara Kannada-style seafood preparations. We had the Tori Rava Tava, Crab sukkha, and Kalwa (oyster) sukkha and everything was mouthwatering. Locals flock to this establishment during lunch hours; the fish thali here is very popular. Everything is reasonably priced and you can get local specialities like kane (ladyfish) and dodi (croaker).

For vegetarians, there is the amazing Halfway Home where for INR 150, you can get a local thali with rice, roti , papad , sambar , rasam , two curries, pickle, and a vegetable fry, a sweet, raita , and curd. Order a sweet lime soda on the side and you will never want to eat anywhere else! Everything is simply perfect.

After lunch, trod to Gokarna Main Beach where Chez Christophe with its sea-facing swings and irresistible desserts awaits you. Catch a quick nap, if you wish, on their low cushions and wake up to welcome the pink and fuchsia of the setting sun. For dinner, indulge in their French-inspired menu cooked with local ingredients. Then hike along the beach, for a kilometre or so, to the auto stand for a ride to your hotel.

Gokarna Quick Guide

BY AIR  // The nearest airport is the Dabolim Airport (140 km) in Goa. Taxis from the airport will bring you to Gokarna.

BY TRAIN  // The nearest railway station, Gokarna Road, has very little connectivity. Your best bets are Ankola (27 km) or Kumta (32 km). There are direct railway links from Madgaon (Goa),  Bangalore ,  Pune , Kochi, and Mumbai. Autorickshaws and public buses are available from the stations to Gokarna market.

BY ROAD  // Overnight buses, both sleepers and non-sleepers, are available from cities like Bangalore, Pune, and Hyderabad. You can book a trip on RedBus or AbhiBus.

Gokarna is an all-season destination but if you are wary of the tropical heat, avoid the summer. Winter sees a lot of tourists and you might have to book in advance as accommodations are often fully booked. Monsoon sees a lot of rain but the lush hillside is mesmerizing. Plan your trip depending on your list of things to do in Gokarna; for example, if you want to do a beach hike, it is best to choose milder weather.

Gokarna has a variety of accommodations catering to every budget.

We stayed at Namaste Cafe (one of the three properties owned by this group in Gokarna) on Om Beach and it was a lovely experience. Unlike Kudle Beach, where most of the accommodation options are located, Om Beach is quiet and not crowded. If Om Beach is completely booked, you can check Shantidham Cafe which also has good reviews. If you want to stay at Kudle Beach, check with the restaurant owners; most of them offer lodging. Zostel is a good bet if you are looking for hostels.

For a luxurious experience, there’s a CGH property, SwaSwara . CGH is known for being eco-friendly and sustainable and it is no different at Gokarna where they offer yoga and Ayurveda on a property overlooking Om Beach. You can also opt for Kahani Paradise , a boutique hotel housed in a holiday home owned by a British family, located in the hills above Paradise Beach.

If camping is your jam, check with travel companies like Thrillophilia who arrange tents and other facilities on Paradise Beach and elsewhere.

2 days in Gokarna gives you just enough time to explore the delicious local cuisine! Our top picks are Halfway Home (vegetarian), Fishland, Chez Christophe, Little Paradise Inn, and White Elephant. See  Best Places to Eat in Gokarna, Karnataka  for more.

2 days in Gokarna makes for the perfect weekend getaway. If you have more time, head to Murdeshwar or Karwar. Have you visited Gokarna? What are your favourite things to do in Gokarna?

So interesting that this is a pilgrimmage site! It looks like an interesting place to visit for a couple of days – thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Never heard of this place but it sounds interesting . Thanks for the detailed information.

Sounds lovely. Beautifully written. I was lost there for a moment in jungle rimmed sun baked sands dreaming of oceans and sunsets at delicious restaurants.

Thanks, Martin! It really is a lovely place.

beautiful photos and lovely description. I went only to om beach and Kudle beach onour trip to Karwar. Gokarna is charming.

Karwar is on our list! & so is Udupi. A drive along Karnataka’s coast would make for an awesome trip, won’t it?

Amazing post! I feel Gokarna as a place is still so unexplored and untouched.

My heart nearly dropped when I read the words butter garlic calamari. The food enough seems like a good reason to visit but that scenery?! I don’t know why we don’t see India marketed more as a beach destination this place looks heavenly and without the crowds of other asian beach destinations. Plus, I really like the idea of seeing cows on the beach, they are kinda cute huh?

Right? India has 7,516.6 km of coastline and some of the beaches are stunning. Beach No. 7, Radhanagar in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is regularly voted in the list of Asia’s best beaches! Hopefully, they’ll find more takers 🙂

Love India, I have not been to this part of the country but it looks and sounds beautiful. Also, I love it when cows just hang out basically wherever they want in India. Your photo with cows sitting in the shade on the beach cracks me up lol

Cows are everywhere in India, aren’t they? This trio was just lazing in the shade! They were kinda funny in their nonchalance.

I’ve never been to India but always fascinated by how much beauty there is to see! Beautiful photos and tips for the 2 days!

I’d love to try those crabs! Stunning photos; I’d love to visit!

Wow! This tiny village surrounded by picturesque location looks amazing. With such lush greenery, dense mountain, and white sandy beach, Gokarna is a perfect place for a family vacation.

The dam is 58 meters in height, and 4692 meters long, impounding a reservoir of 8502 hectares. The reservoir has 6 large radial spillway gates. Hemavathi Dam offers a beautiful view to the visitors. The sight is more attractive when the gates of the reservoir are open and the water gushes down in a lovely manner. There is a garden covered in green grass right next to the dam which enhances the beauty of the location. The garden is often used by the locales as a picnic spot. An early morning visit to the dam .....

3 Shettihalli Church

2 day trip places in karnataka

At a distance of 16 km from Gorur Dam, 25 km from Hassan and 45 km from Sakleshpur, Shettihalli Rosary Church is an ancient church situated at Shettihalli village in Hassan district of Karnataka. It is one of the popular places to visit in Hassan and among the best places to visit near Sakleshpur. Popularly called as Floating Church, Shettihalli Church was built in 1860 by the French missionaries for the wealthy British estate owners. After the construction of the Hemavati Dam and Reservoir in 1960 the church was abandoned. Since then the church submerges in water every year during monsoon season. The church was built magnificently in the Gothic Architectural style. The uniqueness of the church lies in the fact that the church remains submerged in the backwaters of the Hemavathi River at all times of the year except summer. Even when the church is half under the water, tourists can go near it on a coracle. During the summer season the water recedes and visitors can pay a visit .....

48 hours in Hampi Karnataka | The Perfect Itinerary

48 hours in Hampi itinerary

Hampi, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, is an immensely underrated heritage town. It is drop-dead beautiful and awe-inspiring. Every nook has an architectural wonder, not unlike Rome or Pompeii, with scores of stories etched on its stone walls. The excavations are ongoing, and I can only imagine how many more treasures they will reveal. If you love ancient history and old ruins, Hampi should be right there on your list of places to visit. And there are some fantastic tours you can take.

Hampi stone structures

Visiting Hampi made me feel very proud, not only of our rich culture and heritage but also of the preservation efforts of ASI and the pride locals take in their city. Hampi is surprisingly clean and well-kept. A true pleasure to visit.

What to do?

Day 1: the temple side.

What to see

Hampi is rock-cut temples, looming boulders, and scampering monkeys everywhere. It’s a sight to behold. Walking tours like this and this can take you to the best locations easily.

Hampi stone structures historical UNESCO monument

What you cannot miss are:

Vitthala Temple

The 15th-century Vitthala Temple built by King Devaraya II and expanded by Krishnadevaraya is an expansive temple complex comprising the most fascinating structures. Its most famous attractions are the stone chariot (now part of the fifty rupees note), the Kalyana Mantapa (marriage hall) and the Ranga Mantapa with the musical pillars. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vitthala, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Each pillar and corner of a wall is a delight.

Hampi stone structures historical UNESCO monument

Virupaksha Temple

Built in the 7 th Century AD, Virupaksha temple is probably the oldest functioning temple in India. The top of the temple is coloured pastel yellow and stands out in the predominantly stone neighbourhood. Like the rest of Hampi, there are several stucco figures on the walls and the pillars are intricately carved. The main altar area has an impressive ceiling mural, and among other attractions are the temple elephant Lakshmi and the periscope effect (see the upside-down temple picture below). Be sure to sidestep the rats and monkeys running amok there. The latter can get quite aggressive.

Virupaksha means ‘the one with the oblique eye’. Lord Shiva, to whom the temple is dedicated, is the God with three eyes, hence the name.

Virupaksha temple is the central landmark for all things in Hampi…to get the ferry, to get the autos, to orient yourself in the town…because the yellow tower with cow horns at its apex looms over everything.

Hazara Rama Temple

My favourite temple in Hampi. Dedicated to Lord Rama, it was once the private temple of the royal family of Vijayanagara. The temple has intricately carved panels with stories of Ramayana on its walls. And when we went, there were hardly any people. A good time to visit is either first thing in the morning or just as the temples are closing at around 6 PM.

Other monuments to see

2 day trip places in karnataka

  • Kadalekalu Ganesha Temple or peanut Ganesha – a gorgeous monolithic statue
  • Badavilinga Temple
  • Queen’s Bath
  • Achyutaraya Temple
  • Lotus Mahal, where the royal women-folk chilled
  • Elephant stables and Zenana enclosure
  • The Stepped Tank
  • Catch the sunset at Hemakuta Temple Hil l or the Matunga (also called Matanga) Hill

Entry fees of INR 30 (and INR 500 for foreigners) for three monuments to be covered in one day: Vitthala Temple, Elephant stables and Zenana enclosure. Most places close by 6 PM except for Virupaksha temple.

Where to eat

Eat at Mango Tree for the unlimited and quite sumptuous veg thali. Most eating places in Hampi favour on-floor seating, so be prepared to take off your shoes. And be warned, that the view of the mango tree and paddy fields which it was once famous for, no longer exists.

Where to stay

Stay at Clark’s Inn which is at INR 4000 per night is strictly satisfactory. It is central though, located at Kamalapur where you can find most shops, liquor stores, and ATMs. So handy.

Day 2: The hippie side (Anegundi)

Hampi stone structures historical UNESCO monument

About Anegundi and the monkey brothers

Anegundi means elephant pit in Kannada. This place was used for bathing elephants during the Vijayanagara era. Anegundi and Ramayana bear close links. Several monuments in Anegundi and Hampi sport vivid depictions from the ancient Indian epic.

In the Indian epic Ramayana, there are two monkey brothers – Bali and Sugriva . They both ruled over the mythical land of Kishkinda which is basically Hampi; Bali ruled first, and after his death, Sugriva. Hanuman, the monkey God, was Sugriva’s general.

The story goes that after the abduction of Sita, Ram and his brother Lakshman came to Hampi and was met by Hanuman. He took them to Sugriva who in turn, took them to a cave to show them some jewellery that he thought belonged to Ram’s wife Sita. Sugriva explained to Ram that Sita dropped them when the demon king Ravana abducted her on his flying chariot. This was also when Hanuman offered his help to find Sita and joined Ram and Lakshman in their voyage to Lanka, Ravana’s kingdom.

Meanwhile, Ram killed Bali, the older brother of Sugriva, putting Sugriva as the new king of Kishkinda.

Spots of interest

Spots of interest around Anegundi bearing remnants of these stories are:

  • Anjeyanadri Hill , the birthplace of Hanuman
  • Matunga Hill , named after sage Matunga, who cursed Vali with death on stepping to this spot) and is the highest spot in Hampi
  • The Bali cave and Durga temple
  • Gagan Mahal
  • Pampa Sarovar

The royal street

So, apparently, the king’s descendants live in Sanapur and we peeked into how they were living presently. Heere Deewan is a 250-year-old 9,000 sq ft restored mansion in Anegundi restored by Devaraya, the 19th-century descendant of Vijayanagara rulers. He is also a mechanical engineer educated in the US.

Hampi stone structures historical UNESCO monument

Sanapur Lake

No longer secret, the Sanapur Lake is a great spot for a picnic, swim or coracle ride. An irrigation reservoir fed by the Tungabhadra Dam canal, it is surrounded by boulder hills and is fairly tourist-free.

And no, there are no crocodiles here. That’s a ruse to prevent tourists from swimming in and generally create a ruckus, I imagine.

Hampi stone structures historical UNESCO monument

Sunset at Anjeyanadri Hill

The hill happens to be the birthplace of the Monkey God Hanuman, so auspicious to visit even for a sort-of-agnostic-believer-only-when-in-trouble like me. 576 steps lead to the top to catch the sunrise. We climbed it in 12 minutes!

2 day trip places in karnataka

Sunset drum circle

If you are in Anegundi during sunset, follow the bikes and walkers towards the peaks where hippies congregate to jam, beat on drums, and generally have a good time as the sun sets behind the boulders. It is quite an experience. I don’t know what the hill was called but merely follow the crowd.

Bouldering, trekking, and yoga

Several posters announce bouldering sessions (3 hours, 8-11 AM), yoga sessions (starting 8 AM, multiple classes in a day) and half-a-day treks that you can use to productively utilize your day.

2 day trip places in karnataka

Eat at Laughing Buddha to soak in the view and not exactly for the food. Actually, the food on the hippie side wasn’t to die for, although the fish (from the Sanapur Lake, I imagine) was nice and fresh. The toilets were terribly wanting.

2 day trip places in karnataka

  • Shanti guesthouse
  • Mowgli guest house
  • Jungle Tree
  • Peshagar Guest House

Most of them are interchangeable, to be honest. You don’t even need to pre-book, as we walked in the lane, several touts asked if we needed a room. Rooms are basic (no AC) but cosy, with plenty of open, green spaces to lie on a hammock and read, sip on a cold coffee, eat a sumptuous Israeli breakfast, and just generally chill and lounge.

How to go from the temple to the hippie side

Ferry : It is a five-minute ride from one side to another that costs INR 50 per head and involves stuffing you on a rickety ferry with 20 other people. The last ferry from the hippie side is at 5:30 PM and from the temple side is at 6 PM. Ferries start at 7:30 AM.

Car/ Auto: INR 1500 to 1800 to rent a car for a day (8 hours). For a car, contact Chetan (+91 90084 17777). For auto, contact Raja (+91 94494 20985)

Guide services: Guides quote an official rate of INR 2000 per day, but will negotiate for less. Guides are also available at every temple complex, but you may want to take one for the whole day who can optimize your travel and viewing pleasure. We used the services of Mallesh (+91 9480268053) who was good.

It is heart-warming how the locals love, appreciate and take care of their heritage. Our driver Aman told us more than once if something happens to a tourist, the government and police will hit us first and then ask questions. They understand and value their rich heritage and culture and look visibly proud when they talk of the temples and ruins.

Be warned of : people taking your picture without your permission. The locals were amazingly nice even the usually pesky guides, but other travellers (Indian ones) may take your picture surreptitiously, sometimes with them in it (like as a co-passenger on a boat, for example)

How to get to Hampi

From Bangalore: Hampi has neither an airport nor a railway station. The closest airport is Bellary which is 64 km away but by air is not the best way to get to Hampi. The recommended way to travel is to fly to Bangalore and take the bus or train to Hospet, the closest junction. Trains (Check www.irctc.co.in) from Bangalore start at 9 PM and reach Hospet at 6 AM. From Hospet, Hampi is about 20-30 minutes by car or auto. Costs around INR 300-400 to take an auto.

From Mumbai, you can take a bus to get to Hospet since direct trains operate only on Mondays and Wednesdays. The bus takes about 12 hours and is a fairly comfortable journey. KSRTC buses start from Bandra Kurla Complex.

Mumbai-Goa-Hampi route: Several people do this. Fly from Mumbai to Goa and take the bus from Goa to Hampi, after a few days of soaking Goa of course.

The ultimate travel itineraries: Cambodia , Morocco , and Croatia

  • First, I go to TripAdvisor and check out top things to do, top places, and experiences. I use this to make a rough itinerary.
  • From TripAdvisor I often go to Viator to book day tours. I love their user friendly platform and flexible cancellation policies. Compare their offers with GetYourGuide , which is great too.
  • I book my accommodations in Booking because of their flexibility and that the bookings are easily cancellable. The mobile app is great and the genius discounts are on point.
  • I recommend getting the Priority Pass . It gives you access to airport lounges and has helped me through many long waits. It’s definitely well worth the money.
  • And I am literally always on Skyscanner . I get to see the best airfares, and the airline / third party providers offering them. Try the “From: origin city” to “To: Everywhere” option to ignite your imagination on where to travel to next.
