The Visit Ending, Explained: What’s Wrong With the Grandparents?

of The Visit Ending, Explained: What’s Wrong With the Grandparents?

In M. Night Shyamalan’s 2015 horror film, ‘The Visit,’ the audience accompanies a pair of young protagonists on a trip that leads to more menacing outcomes than one expects from a visit to Grandma’s house. After their distant grandparents, Nana and Pop Pop, reach out to teenage sibling duo Becca and Tyler, the pair takes the former up on their invitation for a week-long stay. However, upon arrival, armed with several cameras for Becca’s documentary, the two quickly begin noticing the strange happenings that seem to occur at the house after nightfall. Thus, the kids find themselves fending for themselves as each day unravels more erratic behavior by their aging grandparents, with the night bringing something more sinister.

The found footage film builds a compelling thriller narrative that gradually boosts its suspense until the final act delivers a startling and much-anticipated plot twist that fans have come to expect from the filmmaker. Nonetheless, the same conclusive twist may have left some of the viewers with a few questions. SPOILERS AHEAD!

The Visit Plot Synopsis

In her late teens, Loretta Jamison ran away with a substitute teacher from her high school, Corin, causing a rift between herself and her parents. As a result, years later, after Corin has abandoned his family, Loretta’s 15-year-old daughter, Becca, and 14-year-old Tyler have never met their grandparents. However, their distant relationship stands to change when the old couple reaches out to their grandkids, extending a home-visit invitation. Even though Loretta is against the idea, she doesn’t try to stop her children after they decide to visit her childhood home.

As such, while Loretta leaves for a cruise with her boyfriend, her kids take the train to visit their grandparents with promises of routine Skype calls. Becca, an aspiring filmmaker, decides to document the entire thing in hopes of learning the specifics about her mother and grandparents’ falling out. Consequently, Bella and Fredrick Spencer arrive at the train station on Monday morning to pick up their grandkids with enthusiastic smiles. Their first day together goes smoothly, and as it comes to an end, the kids’ grandpa, Pop Pop, instructs them about a 9:30 bedtime rule.

Although the kids don’t think of it much at first, Becca learns the merit of following through with the rule after she ventures out for a midnight snack and witnesses her Nana, sick and frantically throwing up. Even more frightening, the morning after, the woman abruptly and manically chases the kids under the house’s crawlspace during an impromptu game of hide-n-seek. Throughout the day, the kids’ concern grows further after noticing a few disturbing things about Pop Pop, such as his lack of bowel control and tendency to attack strangers in a fit of paranoia.

The following night, Tyler’s worries grow after he spots Nana wildly scratching at the walls outside the kids’ guest room in a stark state of undress. However, after Becca asks Pop Pop about the older woman’s condition, she receives a plausible answer about Nana’s sundowning issue, establishing her concerning after-hours behavior is similar to sleepwalking.

The explanation satisfies Becca, who attempts to return to her mission to learn about her mother’s relationship with Nana and Pop Pop. Still, she doesn’t make much progress since the topic seems to trigger a violent episode in her grandmother. Meanwhile, Tyler remains weary of his grandparents’ actions and insists they should spy on them by setting up cameras in the living room. Although Becca is initially against the idea, she agrees after walking in on Pop Pop with a rifle’s barrel in his mouth.

Even so, the plan backfires when Nana spots the camera on her nightly manic episode and attempts to break into the kids’ room armed with a knife. Once Becca realizes their lives may be in danger after reviewing the night’s footage, she decides to ask Loretta to pick them up on account of the dangerous circumstances. However, the kids are in for a big surprise when they show the elderly couple to their mother from a window, only to learn that the people they have spent the past few days with are not their grandparents.

The Visit Ending: Who Are The Old Couple? What Did They Do To The Real Grandparents?

As a slow burn of mourning suspense and horror, the film reveals Nana and Pop Pop’s concerning attributes in slow bouts. At first, the behavior that the couple exhibits can be easily explained as a condition of their old age, with sundowning, memory issues, and paranoia forming the baseline. Yet, as the film progresses, the old couple becomes more and more dangerous— first toward themselves and then the kids.

Due to Loretta’s dramatic exit from her parents’ house, the woman seldom speaks to the couple, even as she regularly calls the kids. Furthermore, a seemingly innocent accident damages Becca’s webcam, robbing the mother of any visual cues. Therefore, it isn’t until Thursday morning, when Becca and Tyler have begun fearing for their lives, that Loretta glimpses at the old couple. Consequently, she realizes all this time, her kids have been living with a pair of strangers who are pretending to be their grandparents.

The revelation immediately sets Loretta into action, who tries to contact the cops and reach her kids as soon as possible. In the meantime, she advises her kids to seek help from the neighbors to put distance between themselves and the imposters. Nevertheless, the old couple prevents Becca and Tyler from leaving the house with the idea of a family game night. Thus, with tension in the air, the kids find themselves enduring a game of Yahtzee until the old woman’s incoming mental episode gives Becca an excuse to slip away.

Using the opportunity to explore the house and learn about the imposters, Becca ventures into the forbidden basement, where she suspects her actual grandparents to be. Inside, she finds all the answers to her questions as Becca’s hunch turns out to be true in the worst way possible.

As it would turn out, the imposter old couple is a pair of psychiatric hospital patients, where the actual Bella and Patrick Spencer volunteered. The psychotic couple believed they were from an alien planet, Sinmorfitellia. As such, the pair drowned their own kids inside a well that they believed to hold a passage to the alien planet. For the same reason, they were being under monitoring in the psychic hospital.

Nonetheless, the couple escaped their bounds after the Spencers revealed their plans for a family reunion with their grandkids. Envious of the other couple, the imposters, Claire and Mitchell, killed the former pair and overtook their identities to spend the week with Becca and Tyler. Consequently, the duo managed to evade outsiders anytime they came looking for them at the house and ultimately killed their neighbor, Stacey, when she realized their reality.

Soon after Becca learns this truth, Mitchell locks her up in a room with a psychotic Claire, undergoing her violent episode. Despite their earlier attempts at domestic bliss, the couple’s instincts compel them to harm the children. Nevertheless, before the older woman can choke Becca to death, the girl manages to get her hands on a mirror shard and stabs her attacker to death. Afterward, she rushes to her younger brother’s aid, whom Mitchel is psychologically torturing.

However, with his sister’s element of surprise, Tyler manages to overpower Mitchell, unleashing raw rage and bashing the older man to death by slamming the refrigerator door at his head. Ultimately, after killing the old couple pretending to be their grandparents, Becca and Tyler make it out of the experience alive and reunite with their mother.

Why Did Loretta Stop Talking To Her Parents?

By the film’s end, Loretta’s sore relationship with her parents remains the one last mystery. Arguably, the woman’s reluctance to speak to her parents played a part in the kids’ entrapment since the latter had no point of reference to distinguish their relatives from strangers. Furthermore, part of Becca’s curiosity about her grandparents stemmed from Loretta’s refusal to speak about them to her own kids.

As such, after Becca and Tyler have returned to the safety of their home, Loretta sits down for one last interview for her daughter’s documentary, where she speaks about her past with her parents. When 19-year-old Loretta tried to run away from home with Corin, her high school teacher, the former’s parents wanted to stop her. Nevertheless, the same only resulted in an altercation where Loretta hit her mother, followed by the former’s father hitting his daughter.

Therefore, Loretta’s last day on the farm gave birth to several familial complications. Although Loretta’s parents tried to apologize and solve things afterward, the woman continued to avoid them years and years into the future. For the same reason, Loretta imparts a lesson to her daughter to never hold grudges so hard that they end up ruining things. In turn, Becca, who despises her father for abandoning them, decides to learn from her mother’s mistakes. Unlike Loretta, who refused to speak to her parents, leading to regret after their death, Becca chooses to include home videos of her father in the documentary to close the narrative as a sign of her forgiveness.

The Big Picture

  • In M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit , the main characters discover that the grandparents they are staying with are actually dangerous imposters.
  • The twist is revealed when the children's mother realizes that the people claiming to be their grandparents are strangers who have assumed their identities.
  • The climax of the film involves a tense and dangerous confrontation between the children and the imposters, resulting in the reveal of the true identities of the grandparents.

M. Night Shyamalan is considered a master at delivering drop-your-popcorn-level twisty conclusions to his haunting films. People still talk about the end of The Sixth Sense as perhaps one of the greatest twists in the history of modern cinema. The jaw-dropper at the end of Unbreakable ranks close to the top as well. But there is another pretty decent curveball that the director tosses up in a lesser-known movie that is currently streaming on Max. In 2016's The Visit (which is currently streaming on Max ) he plays on the hallowed relationship between children and their doting grandparents. How could Shyamalan toy with the innocence of this? It is an excellent film that deftly blends found footage with the director's signature slow-burning tension to leave audiences with yet another "WTF?" moment . Let's dig into what exactly happens at the end of his underrated movie, The Visit .

Two siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents' disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation.

What is 'The Visit' About?

Young Becca Jamison ( Olivia DeJonge ) and little brother Tyler ( Ed Oxenbould ) are sent away by their divorced mother Loretta ( Kathryn Hahn ) to finally meet and spend some time with their grandparents , Frederick, or Pop Pop ( Peter McRobbie ), and Maria, better known as Nana ( Deanna Dunagan ). They have a nice rural estate away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and it feels like this is going to be a heartwarming story of two generations of the Jamisons getting to know each other. It seems a bit odd that these two preteens have yet to meet their maternal grandparents, but Shyamalan explains that nicely in the first few scenes: Loretta has had a years-long falling out with her parents after leaving the family farm at the age of 19.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Eerie Found Footage Horror Movie Deserves Another Look

The 2015 film is currently scaring viewers on Max.

Loretta is still estranged from her parents but she wants her children to have a relationship with them — she only wants to go on a cruise with her new boyfriend and needs someone to watch the kids. So, the children have no idea what their Nana and Pop Pop actually look like. And you can feel something amiss from the very beginning of the film as the two precocious but excited kids set off to meet their grandparents. The entire film is told through the kids' (mainly Becca, an aspiring filmmaker) camcorder, as they have decided to document their trip. It's clear right away that Becca resents her father as a result of his abandonment, as she refuses to include any footage of her dad in her film.

Shyamalan Expertly Builds Tension in 'The Visit'

Upon the kids' arrival, Nana and Pop Pop seem like regular grandparents with regular questions like, "Do you like sports?" and "Why are your pants so low?" Nana tends to the chores like cooking and cleaning while Pop Pop handles the more rugged work outdoors like cutting wood. Naturally, Shyamalan tightens the screws immediately when the audience discovers that there is little to no cell phone reception, so he can isolate our four players into a single space. The Grandparents seem fairly easygoing but they have one strict rule — the kids must not come out of their bedroom after 9:30 pm. The very first night, Nana exhibits some bizarre behavior, walking aimlessly through the downstairs portion of the house and vomiting on the floor. However, the next morning she seems to be just fine.

Pop Pop explains to Becca and Tyler that she suffers from "sundowning" which is a very real diagnosis that usually affects the elderly . He tells them that at night Nana gets this feeling that something is in her body and just wants to get out. Pop Pop is clear and coherent, and yet again, we, along with our two young lead characters, assume the grandparents, while odd, are nothing to fear. A Zoom call with Loretta further assuages their fear by explaining away all the strange behavior as part of getting older. It's a back-and-forth that Shyamalan expertly navigates by pushing the audience only so far before reeling it back in with a logical explanation. But soon, things become inexplicably dire and dangerous.

"What's in the shed?" Tyler asks as he looks into the camera while contributing to Becca's documentary . "Is it dead bodies?" What he discovers is a pile of used, discarded adult diapers filled with Pop Pop's excrement. The smell sends Tyler reeling, and he falls out of the shed onto the snowy ground. This time, it's Nana who explains away Pop Pop's odd behavior. She tells her grandson that Pop Pop has incontinence and is so proud that he hides his waste in the shed. At this point, everything seems very odd to say the least, but there is nothing to suggest anything sinister is afoot . Not yet anyway. Even after he attacks a random stranger who he believes is watching him out on the streets on a trip into town, you still just think that maybe Pop Pop may just have a loose screw. However, the sense that these elderly people are something more than doting parents is intensified when Nana leaves Becca inside the oven for several seconds.

What Is the Twist at the End of 'The Visit'?

"Those aren't your grandparents?" Get the heck out of here! What?! Loretta finally sees the two people claiming to be her parents and tells Becca and Tyler via Skype that they aren't their beloved Nana and Pop Pop, but two complete strangers who have assumed their identities. Loretta immediately calls the police, but it will take hours for help to arrive at the remote farmhouse. Becca and Tyler are going to have to play along with these dangerous imposters. After the most tense and awkward game of Yahtzee in the history of board games, things get really, really ugly. Nana and Pop Pop haven't laid a hand on either of the kids in the movie so far. You can feel the slow and excruciating tension that Shyamalan is building . He knows that the audience is waiting for that "point of no return" moment when it is crystal clear that Becca and Tyler's lives are in danger. Becca manages to escape to the basement to discover the dead bodies of two elderly people murdered. Nana and Pop Pop are escaped mental patients from the nearby psychiatric hospital and have killed the real Jamison grandparents.

What Happens at the End of 'The Visit'?

Pop Pop realizes their cover is blown and becomes physical with Becca. He's upset that Becca is ruining Nana's perfect week as a grandmother. He tells her, "We're all dying today, Becca!" pushing her into a pitch-black upstairs room. Meanwhile, he grabs Tyler and takes him into the kitchen, and does one of the most foul and stomach-turning things ever in a Shyamalan film . He takes his used diaper and shoves it in the boy's face. He knows that Tyler is a germaphobe, and it is the most diabolical and traumatizing thing he could do to the boy. Becca is trapped upstairs with the sundowning Nana, fighting for her own life. After a struggle, Becca grasps a shard of glass from the broken mirror and is able to stab Nana multiple times in the gut.

She breaks the lock on the door and runs downstairs to help Tyler. She pulls "Pop Pop" off her traumatized younger brother. Suddenly, Tyler snaps out of his stupor and releases the pent-up anger of his football tackling lessons with his estranged father. He knocks Pop Pop to the ground and slams the refrigerator door on his head over and over . This is significant because earlier in the movie, Becca ribs Tyler about how he froze up during a big play in a youth football game, and this time he comes through to save Becca in the final kitchen scene conquering his biggest fears.

Loretta and the police arrive and the kids run frantically out of the house. The final scene has Loretta setting the record straight for the documentary about the traumatic moments surrounding her running away from home. 15 years before the events of the film, before Becca was born, Loretta fell out with her parents over her decision to marry her teacher. The argument led to Loretta and her parents getting physical with each other, and she left home that night and never responded to their attempts and pleas to reconnect. It's the most emotional scene in the film as Loretta is feeling a huge amount of guilt at never getting to say she was sorry for the strained relationship between her and her parents or getting to possibly hear an apology for the wrongs they also committed. Loretta tells Becca "Don't hold on to anger! You hear me?" The two then share a meaningful embrace. And the final shot is of the two kids with their dad on a birthday when they were much younger.

The Visit is available to stream on Max in the U.S.

6 Best Horror Games To Play If You Love A Quiet Place

Bosch: legacy season 3 - will maddie cover for harry bosch if it turns out he ordered dockweiler's death, the lord of the rings: the rings of power season 2 unleashes new terrifying beasts from middle earth.

M. Night Shyamalan's twist endings are the hallmark of his career, and his 2015 movie The Visit has one of the most exciting ones. Olivia DeJonge, beloved for playing Ashley in the twisted Christmas horror film Better Watch Out, stars as Becca, a teenage girl who stays with her grandparents alongside her brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould). What should be a fun and peaceful family vacation becomes a perplexing and mysterious nightmare and the teenagers must scramble to discover the dark and haunting truth.

The M. Night Shyamalan horror movie has an exciting ending that shifts the audience's perception of the story, proving once again that the filmmaker is great at providing surprising moments that no one sees coming. The final scenes of The Visit make this one of the most unnerving horror movies of the 2010s.

What Happens At The End Of The Visit, And What Is The Twist Ending?

Becca falls into the final girl horror movie trope when she makes an important discovery that is key to the ending of The Visit . When she discovers the dead bodies of her and Ed's grandparents, she also sees uniforms from the hospital where they were employed. This helps her see that "Nana" and "Pop Pop" were patients who ran away, killed their grandparents, and pretended to be them. This is a huge plot twist that was hard to see coming.

The satisfying horror movie ending has the siblings fighting back, but the final scenes are tense and scary, and their survival never feels like a guarantee. Pop Pop locks Becca in her room and hurts Tyler, but Tyler kills Pop Pop and Becca kills Nana. The teenagers are able to get away and talk to the police about what just happened.

The Visit ending works on two levels: a fast-paced, thrilling example of a good horror movie plot twist and also an emotional story about family bonds and problems. Becca and her mom Loretta (Kathryn Hayn) have a tough conversation about how Loretta never talked to her parents after a fight 15 years prior. Loretta wants Becca to stop feeling anger about her own dad's decision to leave the family behind, and the two characters share a sweet moment that helps Becca move forward.

This adds an extra layer to the movie and makes Becca a more fully formed character. It also makes both Becca and Ed feel real since they may be dealing with this out-of-this-world situation, but they are also regular teenagers who feel the pain of a parent who doesn't show them the love that they deserve. While Shyamalan's movie Old is a bad adaptation , The Visit shares that sometimes, it can be difficult to get along with family and it can be tough to move on from past hurts. The movie may have a fun and flashy twist, but it has some deep moments as well that can't be ignored.

How Does This Twist Compare To Others In M. Night Shyamalan Horror Movies?

The Visit ending has one of the best and most unpredictable horror movie plot twists , which makes sense given M. Night Shyamalan's reputation for having shocking moments in most of his films. When comparing the reveal of the identity of "Nana" and "Pop Pop," it's fun to think about the other big reveals in the filmmaker's career. Of course, the standard will always be the twist in the important horror movie The Sixth Sense when it turns out that Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is actually dead and that's one reason for his sweet bond with Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment).

The twist at the end of The Visit might not be quite as stunning as the one in The Sixth Sense , which will always be one of the best horror movie plot twists as it creates such a compelling atmosphere of shock and awe.

However, The Visit still has a fresh and different ending and the final scenes prove the strong character development of the movie. At first, Pop Pop and Nana seem perfectly normal and innocent, and no one would think that grandparents would be evil. And even when Becca and Ed start noticing weird things, it's hard to think that these characters might not be who they are claiming to be. That would mean that they are truly evil and diabolical, and they seem so naive.

The Visit twist ending also works because it's so creepy. Like Pearl (Mia Goth) and Howard (Stephen Ure) in X and Pearl , the patients lying about their identities are definitely unsettling. The movies make sure that the characters are odd and mysterious, but they never seem like they could be killers until audiences finally see them causing havoc.

Let's Talk About the Twist in M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Visit' (Spoilers!)

Olivia DeJonge in ‘The Visit’ (Universal Pictures)

[Warning: We’re going to spoil the big twist of The Visit in the very first paragraph and then discuss the ending, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, look away.]

For someone who was at one point regarded as the Master of the Mind-Blowing Plot Twist, it’s funny to think how almost every one of director M. Night Shyamalan’s surprise endings are essentially summed up by a single line of dialogue. Think, “ I see dead people ,” in The Sixth Sense , “ They called me Mr. Glass ,” in Unbreakable or “ Swing away ,” in Signs . The director’s new film, The Visit (in theaters today) tosses another one sentence-wonder on the pile: “Those aren’t your grandparents.” Uttered at the pivot point between the second and third acts, those words provide an otherwise formulaic movie with a much-needed kick in the pants as it enters the climactic home stretch.

But let’s back up a minute to explain why that sentence pulls the audience back in at the moment they might otherwise check out. Made in The Blair Witch Project found-footage tradition, The Visit depicts a family reunion that’s being documented by a pair of precocious youngsters, 15-year-old Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and 13-year-old Tyler (Ed Oxenbould). In order to give their single mom (Kathryn Hahn) a chance to take a much-needed vacation with her new boyfriend — her first steady beau since their father split — the kids have volunteered to spend a week with the grandparents they’ve never met. How have they gone this long without receiving a birthday phone call or even a card from their Nana (Deanna Dunagan) and Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie)? Well, as Mom tells it, she fled their household nearly two decades ago under contentious circumstances and has deliberately refrained from seeing or speaking to them since. She’s clinging to that resentment so fiercely, she doesn’t even have any pictures of her parents around…a plot point that will become important later on.

Deanna Dunagan in ‘The Visit’ (Universal Pictures)

After years of silence, the old folks have taken steps to heal this rift by asking to meet their grandchildren. Becca, the budding filmmaker of the two siblings, sees the potential for a heart-wrenching documentary to be made from this week-long vacation and eagerly equips herself with two digital cameras. But rather than teary confessionals and family secrets laid bare, she ends up capturing some truly disturbing behavior not long after she and Tyler pass through the doorway of Nana and Pop Pop’s isolated Pennsylvania farmhouse. On their very first night, Becca records her grandmother roaming about the house, vomiting all over the floor. And at roughly the same time each subsequent evening, Nana is out of her bed doing something bizarre, whether it’s crawling around the floor on her hands and knees or moaning and banging on cabinets and doors. Pop Pop blames her problems on “ sundowning ,” an actual medical condition affecting dementia patients. Meanwhile, he’s got his own problems, including a shed where he keeps poop-filled diapers (he’s incontinent, you see) and a penchant for cleaning guns by sticking them in his mouth.

Much of this potentially paranormal activity has already been teased in the movie’s trailer , which is designed to make you think that: A) The grandparents are demons; B) The grandparents are possessed by demons; C) The grandparents have been replaced by body-snatching monsters from a parallel dimension. As it turns out, though, their crazy behavior is due to the fact that they’re both legitimately crazy. They’re also — big twist! — not Nana and Pop Pop, as Hahn’s character belatedly reveals when Becca and Tyler surreptitiously film the elderly couple during a Skype session on the last day of their stay. (Estranged daughter that she is, she has conveniently not wanted to speak with them in earlier video calls.) Because Mom is hours away by car and the local police aren’t answering, the kids have to stay in the house with these strangers for a full day pretending like nothing has changed.

Watch the trailer:

Too bad for them that Pop Pop decides to prove that being crazy isn’t the same thing as being stupid. Aware that the ruse is up, he fills in the backstory behind the twist. Prior to taking up residence in the farmhouse, he and “Nana” were patients at a nearby mental hospital where the real Nana and Pop Pop were regular volunteers.

Jealous at their happiness over the impending visit of their grandkids, the frauds forced their way into the home and murdered the couple with a hammer, stashing their bodies in the basement. (Throughout the movie, other folks from the hospital have been stopping by the house to check up on the popular duo, but their replacements have conspired to be “out for a walk” during these visits.) They then went to the train station to pick up Becca and Tyler who were none the wiser because, remember, no pictures! Also, no Mom around to warn them otherwise. (Not for nothing, but this twist really does elevate Hahn to Worst Mother in the World status.)

Peter McRobbie in ‘The Visit’ (Universal Pictures)

Of course, now that the kids know, they’ll have to die — a fate they manage to avoid by killing the escaped mental patients instead. As the siblings stumble outside, the cops and their mother finally show up and whisk them away to safety. In a final coda, Becca finally gets the on-camera waterworks she’s been searching for when Mom reveals that she had the opportunity to mend fences with her parents years ago, but decided to hold onto her grudge instead — a choice that indirectly led to their deaths. She tearfully tells her daughter that forgiveness is essential, which in turn allows Becca to let go of some of the lingering anger she feels towards her own father for ditching their family.

In the past, some of Shyamalan’s twists have deepened his movies, turning, for instance, The Sixth Sense into a parable about grief and Unbreakable into a real world exploration of comic-book mythology. With The Visit though, the big revelation cheapens the movie to a certain extent. When you step back and think about it, there’s something deeply unpleasant about the way he’s using the mentally ill as routine horror-movie boogeymen. In the moment, however, the twist achieves its goal of catching the audience off guard. During the screening I was in, a wave of loud gasps swept through the packed house when Hahn said, “Those aren’t your grandparents” — the same gasps I heard 16 years ago in the final moments of The Sixth Sense when everyone figured out at the same instant that Bruce Willis had been dead all along. Shyamalan may no longer be considered “ The Next Spielberg ,” but that reaction to The Visit indicates that he’s still capable of some Spielbergian surprises.

1. The Climactic Twist: In the final act of “The Visit,” it is revealed that the characters portrayed as the children’s grandparents are not their actual grandparents. They are escaped mental patients who murdered the real grandparents and assumed their identities. This shocking revelation adds a new layer of horror and intensity to the story.

2. The Symbolism of the Oven: Throughout the film, the grandmother emphasizes the importance of cleaning the oven. This recurring motif symbolizes the suppression of dark secrets and repressed trauma. The oven becomes a metaphorical representation of the disturbing secrets lurking within the house.

3. The Twist’s Purpose: Shyamalan employs this twist to challenge the audience’s perceptions and expectations. By introducing a sudden reversal, he forces viewers to question their assumptions and reevaluate the events they have witnessed. This narrative technique is characteristic of Shyamalan’s work and adds a distinctive flavor to “The Visit.”

4. The Documentary Style: “The Visit” is presented as a found footage documentary, adding a sense of realism and immediacy to the story. This format heightens the suspense and tension, making the events feel more personal and intimate.

5. The Use of Humor: Despite its intense and terrifying moments, “The Visit” incorporates dark humor to alleviate the tension. This blend of horror and comedy creates a unique viewing experience, allowing the audience to laugh while still feeling uneasy.

6. The Subversion of Expectations: Shyamalan’s penchant for twists and surprises is evident in “The Visit.” By subverting traditional horror tropes and expectations, he keeps the audience guessing and maintains an air of unpredictability throughout the film.

7. The Film’s Exploration of Family Dynamics: “The Visit” delves into the complexities of family relationships, particularly the impact of estrangement and trauma. Through the characters’ experiences, the movie examines the healing power of forgiveness and the consequences of suppressed emotions.

Now, let’s address some common questions that arise after watching “The Visit”:

1. Q: Who is the father of the children?

Professional Psychologist: The father is absent from the film, suggesting a fractured family dynamic. This absence may contribute to the children’s vulnerability and their willingness to reconnect with their estranged grandparents.

2. Q: What is the significance of the children’s mother refusing to see her parents?

Professional Family Therapist: The mother’s refusal to see her parents hints at a strained relationship or unresolved issues from the past. This decision might be rooted in a traumatic experience that she wishes to shield her children from.

3. Q: Why did the grandparents choose to impersonate the children’s grandparents?

Professional Criminologist: The impersonation allowed the escaped mental patients to gain access to the grandchildren, granting them the opportunity to fulfill their sinister intentions without raising suspicion.

4. Q: Are there any clues throughout the film that hint at the twist?

Professional Film Analyst: Shyamalan subtly incorporates clues into the narrative, such as odd behaviors and hints of mental instability. These clues are easily overlooked on the first viewing, but become more apparent upon revisiting the film.

5. Q: What is the significance of the children’s fear of germs?

Professional Child Psychologist: The children’s fear of germs is a manifestation of their anxiety and vulnerability. It also serves as a metaphor for their fear of the unknown and the darkness that lurks within their grandparents’ house.

6. Q: Is forgiveness a central theme in the movie?

Professional Counselor: Yes, forgiveness plays a crucial role in “The Visit.” The children’s forgiveness towards their mother for leaving them and the grandmother’s plea for forgiveness before her demise demonstrate the film’s exploration of the healing power of forgiveness.

7. Q: What can we learn from “The Visit”?

Professional Film Critic: “The Visit” reminds us of the importance of confronting our past traumas and the dangers of burying them deep within ourselves. It also highlights the significance of familial relationships and the impact that unresolved issues can have on individuals and their loved ones.

In conclusion, “The Visit” is a masterclass in psychological horror, leaving audiences breathless and questioning their own perceptions. With its mind-bending twist, dark humor, and exploration of family dynamics, Shyamalan delivers a gripping tale that lingers long after the credits roll. This film serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting effects of trauma and the importance of forgiveness in our lives.

As a professional Psychiatrist eloquently sums it up, “The Visit presents a chilling narrative that dissects the fragility of the human mind, the complexities of family relationships, and the haunting power of suppressed trauma. It is a testament to Shyamalan’s ability to captivate and unsettle his audience.”

What is the story of The Visit?

The Visit :What is it about?

The Visit is well-nigh two kids visiting their grandparents for the first time. They are moreover going there to hope and rebuild a underpass between their mom and grandparents and help their mom heal without a painful divorce. The movie is in documentary form.

The Visit is one of the most unnerving and realistic horror stories. A good thing well-nigh archetype horror movies is that, without the movie ends, you can switch it off and go to bed,  knowing that you’re safe . Vampires, ghosts, and demonic powers don’t exist, and plane if you are prone to these kinds of esoteric beliefs, there are safeguards. If your home is not built in an Indian solemnities ground and you haven’t bought any creepy-looking dolls from your local antiquary, you’re perfectly safe.

However, what well-nigh the idea of two kids spending five days with two escaped psychiatric ward patients in a remote farmhouse? Now, this is a thought that will send shivers lanugo your spine. It’s a story that sounds not just realistic but real. It’s  something that might have happened in the past  or might happen in the future.

This is  what  The Visit  is all about . This idea, coupled with documentary-form storytelling, is why the movie is so unnerving to watch.

The Visit: Plot Explained

Loretta’s past.

As a young girl, Loretta Jamison fell in love with her upper school teacher and decided to skip her hometown with him. Before leaving, she had a heated wrangling with her parents and hasn’t seen them since. At the movie’s start, she is a single mom of 15-year-old Becca and 14-year-old Tyler, and she  hasn’t spoken to her parents in 15 years .

What really happened on the day Loretta left?

Loretta’s mom tries to stop her from leaving the house, and Loretta hits her mom, and her dad hits her. Soon after, her parents try to reach out to Loretta, but she refuses to take their calls, and years go by.

Meet The Grandparents

Years later, Loretta’s parents reach out to  meet their grandchildren . The grandparents are, seemingly, wholly reformed and now plane help at the local psychiatric hospital. Although initially not too fond of the idea, Loretta is persuaded by the insistence of her children. While she had no intention of visiting the parents, she permitted her children to pay their grandparents a five-day visit.

At The Grandparents’

Their first meeting with Nana and Pop Pop starts on the right foot. They start getting to know each other, and other than a simple generational gap, nothing seems too strange. The only thing that seems off is that they are warned  not to leave the room without 9:30 in the evening .

The kids unravel this rule, and on the first night, they notice  Nana vicarial erratically , projectile vomiting, scratching wallpaper with her yellowish hands, and running virtually the house on all fours. Grandpa appears paranoid and hides his sultana diapers in the garden shed, and the situation escalates each day.

The Visit Ending Explained: What happens in the end?

Tyler Becca mother ending explained

The ending of Visit has the kids finally showing the elderly couple to Loretta. She, completely horrified, states that  those are not her parents . The pair posing as Pop Pop and Nana are escaped psychiatric institution patients who murdered their grandparents and took their places.

The kids survive, skiver their captors, and are found working and well by their mom and the police. Becca kills Nana with a shard from the mirror, thus symbolically overcoming her fear of her reflection. Tyler kills Pop Pop by repeatedly slamming him in the throne with a refrigerator door without overcoming his germaphobia and uneasiness well-nigh freezing.

The Sense Of Dread

The elements of horror in this movie are just  perfectly executed . First of all, the mucosa is shot as a documentary. Becca is an aspiring filmmaker who records the unshortened trip with her camera. From time to time, we see an interview of all the characters, which just serves as the perfect vessel for characterization.

No Ghouls or Cults

Another thing that evokes dread is  realism . There are no supernatural beings or demonic forces. It’s just two kids vacated in a remote farmstead with two creepy, deranged people. Plane in the end, when Loretta finds out what’s happening, it takes her hours to get there with the police. The scariest part is that it’s not that nonflexible to imagine something withal those lines really happening.

The  house itself is dread-inducing . The place is old and rustic. Like in The Black Phone soundproofing a room  could have prevented kids from hearing Nana rummaging virtually the house without a well-spoken idea of what was happening, but this was not the case, as the old couple weren’t that capable.

The  characters  themselves  are perfectly played . Something is unnerving well-nigh Pop Pop and Nana from the very first scene. It’s the Uncanny Valley scenario where you finger that something’s off and shakes you to the core, but you have no idea what it is.

Separation, Remorse, and Personal Fears

Suspecting the grand parents

What this movie does the weightier is explore the  ugly side of separation, old grudges, and remorse . The main reason why kids are insistent on visiting their grandparents is out of their desire to help their mom.

They see she’s remorseful for never  working things out with her parents . In light of her failed marriage and the topic that caused it to end, she might live with the doubt that her parents were right all along. This makes her visualization and wrangling with her parents plane worse. Reconciling when you know you were wrong is harder than forgiving the person who wronged you.

The Kids’ Perspective

There are personal fears and  traumas of the kids . Tyler, in his unwise naivete, is convinced that his father left considering he was disappointed in him as a son. Tyler tells Becca that he froze during one game he played, which disappointed his dad so much that he had to leave. While this sounds ridiculous to any sultana (and plane Becca), it’s a matter of fact to Tyler. As a result of this trauma, Tyler moreover ripened germaphobia. In Becca’s own words, this gives him a greater sense of control.

On the other hand,  Becca refuses to squint at herself in the mirror  or stand in front of the camera if she can help it. Both kids  had to overcome their fears to survive , which is a solid and well-spoken metaphor for how these things sometimes turn out in real life.

  • I understand  Suspension Of Disbelief  in horror films, but neither kids waif their cameras despite the terror they go through only so we, the audience, can get the unshortened narrative?

The Surprise Visit features a small ensemble of actors who seem to be challenging each other.  Only they’re not inspiring each other, they’re competing against each other for who can exaggerate the most.  And director Nick Lyon is letting his cast “duke it out”.

Actors are usually the ones getting caught in the crosshairs of a bad movie, but the performances in The Surprise Visit  make Lyon’s movie borderline unwatchable.  The over-the-top southern drawls, the high strung emotions, the deliveries that enunciate the wrong words and cut other people off.  It’s an actor’s masterclass on what not to do.

The story is driven by a would-be robbery by a drug addict named Casey (Rob Riordan) and his pregnant girlfriend Annabelle (Jacqi Vene of Netflix’s  Fear Street Part Two: 1978 ).  Upon learning about the pregnancy, Casey desperately begs his father (Eric Roberts) for money or a job.  Dad offers neither, although he’s successful in getting his boss ( Dopesick’s  Tricia Hawn) to give Casey the benefit of the doubt.  However, the job offer is never delivered to Casey.  The next time the two reunite is when Casey and Annabelle are recovering from their botched robbery, and trying to locate the kidnapped wife (Serah Henesey) of the husband they inadvertently murdered.

The plot has a “snowball effect” approach as new people become roped into Casey and Annabelle’s get-rich-quick scheme, but Nick Lyon’s loose directorial vision undermines the danger and intensity that should be fuelling this home invasion thriller.  By allowing his actors to flub their way through the movie, the director shows he’s either not in tune enough with his production or he’s completely tuned himself out.  Stephen Meier’s screenplay, allegedly “based on true events”, also feels insufficient;  almost as if he provided a skeleton of what the final script would resemble and never returned to his draft, allowing the actors to practically improvise their way through this tense material.

The ultimate betrayal in The Surprise Visit is the movie’s surprising indifference towards its characters.  The ending makes a halfhearted, last-ditch effort to empathize with Annabelle after she makes a random and rash decision.  The decision is supposed to imply some ambiguity, but to even hint towards the violent choice she makes is a misstep;  especially when it’s followed up by an upbeat celebration.  Are we supposed to cheer for Annabelle?  Or, feel sorry for her?  The filmmakers don’t even know!  It’s a sloppy ending that follows a poorly paced and overlong chase, that follows some of the most embarrassing character work I’ve ever seen.

The only surprise the movie offers is its early contribution to my year-end worst-of list.

The Bear Season 3 Ending, Explained: What Happened?

The FX series pulls out every stop—cameos included!—in an ending that sees a definitive swerve for Carmy’s future.

preview for The Bear's Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Matty Matheson Talk the New Season | Explain This | Esquire

Clearly, Sammy’s (man)childish bit is meant as a pretty on-the-nose metaphor for how Carmy deals with pain. He has no real coping mechanism aside from work, so his problems never really go away. They stay. Linger. Follow him around. And you know what thwarts a haunting, right?

An exorcism. That’s obviously the moment The Bear was leading us to all along. As in a good horror flick , th e monster shows up in the final act and the protagonist must face their greatest fear if they want to live. In The Bear’ s season finale, the big bad is Chef David Fields (Joel McHale)—the anti-mentor who has tormented Carmy in flashbacks for three seasons now. He shows up at Ever’s funeral dinner and wastes no time in glaring at his former student. After an entire season of Carmy in a fit of especially dissociated rage, the finale makes it plain that confronting Fields is the one thing that can set him free.

Carmy Loses His Shit (but in a Relatively Productive Way This Time)

Welcome back to Ever, chefs. Whereas season 2’s “Forks” episode positioned the real-life Chicago restaurant as Richie’s glow-up dojo, Ever serves a different purpose this time around. In short: Its staff is everything that The Bear’s pained heroes are not. For one, they don’t argue! They clearly treasure each other as chefs and humans. And they look like they sleep at least six hours a night. The contrast isn’t lost on the struggling crew. Richie uses the time to reacquaint himself with people who don’t make his blood boil, while Sydney and Carmy sit with a legion of real-life chefs who basically tell them: We came, we saw, we struggled, and now we’r e okay!

the bear

Sydney seems especially disturbed. Keep in mind that she’s been in Carmy’s orbit for a decent chunk of time and doesn’t have the same network as him. Ever so slowly in the finale—meeting a handful of nice-seeming chefs who very much don’t have Carmy’s glazed look of terror—she’s realizing the weight of her time at The Beef and The Bear. Regardless, Sydney tells Adam Shapiro that she still doesn’t have an answer for him. She can’t bring herself to leave The Bear. Yet.

Meanwhile, her chronically avoidant boss actually tackles a problem head-on. Fields leaves his table, Carmy chases after him, and the showdown begins. “After ‘fuck you,’ I don’t have much,” Carmy says. Fields tries to exit the chat before Carmy blurts, “I think about you too much!” Oof. Meanie Chef quips that he doesn’t think about Carmy, who should really express some gratitude. “You were an okay chef when you started with me,” Fields says. “Now you’re an excellent chef.”

This stupefies Carmy, who seems...relieved? Maybe even happy? Even if Carmy sought his mentor’s approval all along, I’ll take it if it gives the man some peace. Consider the exorcism a success. More of this for Carmy, please.

Party at Sydney’s!

First of all: It’s a hell of a power move for The Bear to needle-drop the American Pie song. “Laid,” by James—remember it? Either way, prepare to have EEEEEE-EEEEEEEEE! stuck in your head for a month.

Anyway, there’s an after-party at Sydney’s new apartment. Here, Olivia Colman’s Chef Andrea Terry finally becomes an Olivia Colman Character. She whirls around the apartment, sprinkling coffee grounds on burned waffles. Side note: Colman is downright incredible in this entire episode, making Chef Terry a damn convincing case for life beyond The Bear for Carmy and Sydney. Arguably, the episode’s best moment is Carmy and Chef Terry’s not-smoke break outside Ever. (“You have no idea what you’re doing and are therefore invincible.”)

At the after-party, Sydney walks to her fridge and notices a newspaper clipping that highlights her time at The Beef. You can almost see whatever haunted Carmy entering Sydney—she sees flashes of her best and worst moments there. She runs outside and suffers a panic attack. It’s brutal. The Bear is telling us that just as Fields hurt Carmy, Carmy hurt Sydney, and the cycle of pain continues to damage yet another chef.

Now You Look at Your Phone, Carmy?

At the end of the finale, we see Carmy walking the streets of Chicago, finally resembling the somewhat upbeat dude who used to sell denim from his oven again. Of course, it’s a perfect time for that Chicago Tribune review to drop. Carmy pulls out his phone and opens it, but his anxiety takes over—he starts plucking individual words from the piece. Some are good. Some are bad. My colleague Josh Rosenberg pointed out that Carmy had a ton of missed calls from Computer (Brian Koppelman) and Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt), who were both waiting on the review, good or bad. Plus, when Carmy’s anxiety montages pop up, we’re meant to understand that he’s become an unreliable narrator. The review could’ve said anything—let’s just hope it’s not negative enough to make Uncle Jimmy pull his funding entirely.

Then...TO BE CONTINUED. Damn! We knew that The Bear would return for season 4, but the series really hit us with the Marvel-esque title stinger, à la THOR WILL RETURN. Let’s hope that we only have to wait another year for season 4— Chris Storer , we can’t wait any longer than that.

The Leftovers

I have a few more thoughts about the finale, so I must turn to a familiar vehicle for the extremely minuscule cross-section of my True Detective and The Bear readers : the emoji bullet point.

🐻 Carmy doesn’t call Claire after all. The constant—and I mean constant —nagging of Carmy by just about every character on the show actually did lead me to believe he’d smash that call button. Maybe that’s what our shoulders-relaxed chef would’ve done had he not pulled up the Chicago Tribune review. Really, I’m just bummed that Molly Gordon didn’t get the chance to fully reprise her delightful season 2 turn.

🐻 The Bear was such a flirt this season! While everyone was out and about ’shipping Carmy and Sydney, it feels like we left season 3 with two could-be-somethings: the first being Sydney and Luca. They share a late-party glass of wine and a friendly chat about only-childhood that you could read however you’d like. Richie and Jessica (Sarah Ramos)? Yeah, she’s his date to Tiffany’s (Gillian Jacobs) wedding.

🐻 Who do I have to call to get John Mulaney’s Stevie a bottle episode next season? We can’t relegate this man to Carmy odor-control duties!

🐻 I’m willing to put a Ted Fak–style parlay on at least two of Ever’s former chefs finding work at The Bear.

🐻 The focus of this episode—exorcising demons at Ever’s funeral—means that we don’t get one last check-in with a few of The Bear ’s main players. We’ll have to wait until season 4 to see Sugar (Abby Elliot) and Baby Berzatto, Sweeps (Corey Hendrix) continue to level up his sommelier game, Tina’s (Liza Colón-Zayas) next chapter, Marcus’s (Lionel Boyce) masterpiece in the making, and how Ebraheim (Edwin Lee Gibson) is holding up at the sandwich outpost.

🐻 Honestly, it was a delight to see EVERY SECOND COUNTS morph from a hustle mantra to a message of appreciating the people you love.

That’s a wrap on season 3, folks. Thank you, as always, for reading Esquire—and order yourself an Italian beef for lunch today. You deserve it.

All 109 Movies & TV Shows Leaving Peacock This Month

10 great classic shows you didn't know were on peacock, 10 hidden gem tv shows on peacock from the 2010s.

  • Sam and Violet are alive, having been preserved in stasis for 15 years.
  • Emma's pursuit of Pasaje is a way for her to reconnect with her past and find closure.
  • The Resort explores the destructive pull of nostalgia and the consequences of trying to recapture one's youth.

The 2022 Peacock sci-fi mystery series The Resort ending explained many of its biggest questions while raising a few more. The Resort' s main cast includes Cristin Milioti and William Jackson Harper as Emma and Noah, a couple celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary with a vacation at a luxury resort in the Yucatán. The show quickly makes clear that all is not well with the marriage, but the relationship is rekindled by the mystery of Sam (Skyler Gisondo) and Violet (Nina Bloomgarden), a teenage couple who went missing 15 years earlier.

What begins as a potential criminal conspiracy involving the immensely influential Frías family becomes a mind-bending temporal conundrum as the parallel stories of Violet and Sam and Emma and Noah become increasingly intertwined. In the finale of The Resort , all four characters reach the fabled Pasaje. It becomes an Eldorado for the grieving Violet in 2007 and the grieving Emma in the present day. After a treacherous journey, Emma finds Sam and Violet afloat in a pool, having not aged a single day since their disappearance. It's through this discovery that the final pieces of The Resort ending begin falling into place.

10 Best Shows Like Peacock's The Resort

From The White Lotus and Outer Banks to Bored to Death, Only Murders in the Building, and more, find the best TV shows to watch with The Resort.

Sam & Violet Are Alive

The missing teenagers transcended time.

The Resort ending explained that Sam and Violet were not murdered , which had become increasingly unlikely, especially given the lack of credible suspects. Both Baltasar (Luis Gerardo Méndez) and Alex (Ben Sinclair) are quickly discounted as potential murderers and instead become valuable resources in tracking down the missing teenagers and leading them all to Pasaje. The Resort ending briefly hints the couple may have drowned in a tragic accident during the 2007 hurricane, but it's then revealed that they've instead been in stasis for the past 15 years.

In the moments before they nearly drowned, Violet was drawn to a vision of her dead mother. This saved her and Sam from drowning in the cave during the hurricane, but it also led to them being preserved for the past 15 years. In The Resort, Cristin Milioti's Emma is also drawn to the pool, hearing the laughter of the child she lost and never got to see. However, just as she is about to join Sam and Violet in the pool, she relents and instead revives the young couple from their stasis in The Resort ending.

Waking up in 2022, it feels as if only five minutes have passed for Sam and Violet. The responses of their respective parents are vastly different. Sam's parents hang up on him, and Violet's father Murray is speechless from being reunited with his missing daughter. The past 15 years have been tough on Murray (Nick Offerman), as he moved from place to place, performing shady jobs for government contractors and never putting down roots. Finally reunited with his daughter, the scarred and bedraggled Murray can once again turn into the loving family man introduced in The Resort episode 1.

The 35 Best TV Shows On Peacock (July 2024)

Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming platform, is growing its library of exclusive content. Here are some of the best TV series the service has to offer.

What's Next For Emma And Noah?

In the previous episode, Emma and Noah's marital difficulties came to a head when she lamented how co-dependent they had become , as The Resort ending explained. Fearing they were both losing their individuality, she pointed out how, rather than reignite their spark, Emma's quest for Pasaje became another way for a concerned Noah to keep an eye on her.

In an emotionally raw performance by Cristin Milioti, Emma admits to Noah — via an overheard conversation with Murray — that she wants to find Pasaje, so she can see her daughter's face, as she had refused to when she awoke to be told her daughter had died after only living for an hour. Noah's concern for Emma, and her refusal to confront her traumatic experience, have driven a wedge between the couple.

Pursuing Pasaje based on the romanticized ideal of Sam and Violet, who — like Noah and Emma — fell in love at Christmas, is a way for Emma to reconnect with their relationship as it was before. When she finally reaches Pasaje, however, she decides not to enter the pool, later telling Noah that she " didn't want to lose 15 years ." There's a dual meaning to this statement.

On the one hand, it's an obvious reference to the time that was lost by Sam and Violet when they transcended time, as The Resort ending explained. More importantly for Emma and Noah, it also affirms that contrary to what she may have let him believe, she still wants to remain married to Noah. Her discussion with Violet about seeing her mother again confirms that Emma finally makes her peace with the death of her daughter and is ready to move on with her life. She still carries the pain of loss but no longer lets it consume her, as she tells Violet: " It's always there...but it gets better ."

New On Peacock: All 185 Movies & TV Shows Arriving In July

NBC Universal's streaming service Peacock offers a wide variety of movies, TV shows, and even live events, with much more arriving every month.

How Did Alex Know Everything That Was Going To Happen?

The Resort 's most intriguing character is the hotel's owner, Alex (Ben Sinclair). It was revealed in episode 5 that he was the one who placed Sam and Violet's cellphones in the jungle for Emma and Noah to find 15 years later. In doing so, he triggered their whole investigation of Sam and Violet's disappearance, even though they hadn't disappeared when he planted their phones. The clues as to how Alex knew how everything would play out, despite seemingly dying years prior, are contained in the mural on the wall of his penthouse, as The Resort ending explained.

The painting depicts Sam and Violet looking out of the penthouse window and also shows Emma and Noah in the jungle. The inclusion of the meteor and dinosaurs in the mural heavily implies that Alex experienced time differently from others. The mural depicts past, present, and future existing side by side, which is how Alex surely saw time, a perspective that caused his " memory leakage ."

The NBC/Universal affiliated streaming service Peacock features a revolving door of great shows and movies. Here's everything leaving March 2024.

Was It Worth Losing Time?

The resort's real meaning explained.

Luna best explains the show's real meaning when she observes that " They lost time [...] It's pretty on the surface, but if you squint, it's f***ed up ." The Resort is a story all about the destructive pull of nostalgia. Violet is so desperate to see her mother again that she abandons her father for 15 years. Sam and Violet's love story appeals to Emma because it's sort of like time travel. Through them, she can relive that time when " everything is so meaningful and the highs are, like, so f***ing high " before " the lows keep getting lower ."

The Yucatán location and references to Mayan iconography throughout The Resort plays into this theme of the problems with recapturing one's youth. Spanish conquistador Ponce de León is believed to have traveled to the same region in his search for the Fountain of Youth, which was said to restore the youth of those who bathe in its waters.

That's essentially what the pool at Pasaje is. In transcending time, Sam and Violet's youth is retained, but the price is devastating their family and loved ones for 15 years. Violet observes losing time to see her mother one last time wasn't worth it, because the loss still hurts 15 years later, and always will.

Peacock is a streaming service that is home to some of TV's most classic and iconic shows, even if subscribers aren't totally aware yet.

Is The Resort Setting Up Season 2?

Where is baltasar going.

Despite wrapping up the stories of Emma and Noah and Sam and Violet, there are a few loose ends left, as The Resort ending explained, that could lead to more from the show. At the very end of The Resort , Detective Baltasar Frias hands Luna a newspaper clipping and tells her that he will see her again soon. He says he's off to " an ocean very far away " because he's found something, or rather it's found him. He walks away, showing that the back of his jacket is stitched with a representation of three friends looking out to sea.

When Luna reads the clipping, she smiles a knowing smile and leaves the poolside bar. Depending on how well the show performs on Peacock , there could be a season 2 for The Resort , focused on where Baltasar is going. Given the handful of clues, it's clear that their time-sensitive friend and employer Alex may not be dead after all and is out there somewhere in an ocean very far away.

Peacock has some great shows from the 2010s, including nuder the radar gems like Covert Affairs, Necessary Roughness, and Kingdom.

What Resort Showrunner Andy Siara Says About The Season 1 Ending

The ending of the resort was deliberately kept ambiguous.

The Resort ending explained as much as it could, but there were still a few stones left unturned. Showrunner Andy Siara had a few things to say about The Resort season 1 ending, and its sequel potential. While the story of The Resort has been completed, Siara purposefully left things open-ended in case anyone wanted to take a crack at The Resort season 2. In an interview (via Collider ), Siara discussed The Resort ending, and how he keeps it just ambiguous enough to continue the story.

According to Siara, if Peacock wanted The Resort season 2, he has plenty of ideas for how the story would continue, particularly, with Luis Gerardo Mendez's Baltasar. "If Peacock wants to do another one, I know how to do that and have different paths forward and multiple seasons that might include some of the characters, might include a whole new cast and stuff."

It sounds almost like The Resort would end up mirroring The White Lotus in an anthology capacity if all of the new cast stuff is to be believed. That being said, Siara purposefully ended The Resort the way he did, just in case there won't be a second installment.

Created for the steaming service Peacock by Andy Siara, The Resort is a Comedy television series with dark elements. Starring William Jackson Harper and Cristin Milioti, the series sees a married couple heading to an island resort where they inadvertently become tied up in a missing person's mystery from fifteen years prior.

The Surprise Visit Ending Explained

  • UPDATED: November 23, 2023

the visit ending explained reddit

Table of Contents

“The Surprise Visit,” a suspense thriller directed by Nick Lyon, opens with a scene of a terrified woman in pajamas fleeing through the woods, setting the tone for a film that explores themes of desperation, class difference, and the consequences of actions taken in extremis. The story revolves around Annabelle and Casey, a couple expecting a child, struggling with meth addiction and financial hardship. In a bid to alleviate their financial woes, Casey overhears his boss, Mrs. Dixon, mentioning she will be away for the weekend. Seeing an opportunity, Casey plans to rob her house, knowing she possesses valuable jewelry.

However, the plot takes a turn when Mrs. Dixon’s daughter, Juliette, and her husband, Daniel, decide to make a surprise visit to the Dixon residence, coinciding with Casey’s planned robbery. The situation escalates when Casey kills Daniel, forcing Juliette to attempt an escape to avoid a similar fate. This twist propels the film into its final act, a chase through the woods, as Juliette tries to flee her pursuers.

The film’s narrative attempts to blend elements of a home invasion thriller with a critique of social issues, particularly income inequality and the circumstances that drive people to desperate acts. However, the portrayal of the central characters as drug addicts seems to undermine the intended message about poverty and income inequality in America, inadvertently reinforcing negative stereotypes about the poor.

Despite its aspirations to delve into deeper themes, “The Surprise Visit” ultimately falls short in its execution. Critics have noted that the film, while presenting a somewhat interesting twist on the home invasion genre, fails to fully engage with its characters, leading to a lack of emotional depth. The ending, in particular, has been critiqued for its ambiguity and the seemingly random and rash decision made by Annabelle, which is followed by an upbeat celebration. This conclusion leaves the audience uncertain about how to feel towards the characters, particularly Annabelle, and reflects a disjointed narrative approach.

Overall, “The Surprise Visit” aims to be a gripping thriller that touches upon issues of desperation and social inequality but struggles to balance its thematic ambitions with effective storytelling. The film’s portrayal of its characters and their motivations, coupled with a plot that treads familiar territory, results in a movie that is more suited to a casual viewing rather than a profound cinematic experience.

Here’s why it would be tough for Democrats to replace Joe Biden on the presidential ticket

University of Michigan Presidential Debate Expert Aaron Kall calls President Joe Biden’s uneven debate performance on Thursday night “probably the worst performance of a candidate, certainly an incumbent candidate, ever.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s halting debate performance has led some in his own party to begin questioning whether he should be replaced on the ballot before November.

The latest on the Biden-Trump debate

  • The debate was a critical moment in Joe Biden and Donald Trump’s presidential rematch to make their cases before a national television audience.
  • Take a look at the facts around false and misleading claims frequently made by the two candidates.
  • Both candidates wasted no time sparring over policy during their 90-minute faceoff. These are the takeaways .

There is no evidence Biden is willing to end his campaign. And it would be nearly impossible for Democrats to replace him unless he chooses to step aside.

Here’s why:

Delegates Biden won in the primaries are pledged to support him

Every state has already held its presidential primary. Democratic rules say that the delegates Biden won should support him at the party’s upcoming national convention unless he tells them he’s leaving the race.

The president indicated that he had no plans to do that, telling supporters in Atlanta shortly after he left the debate stage, “Let’s keep going.” Biden campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt was even clearer, saying Friday: “Of course he’s not dropping out.”

The conventions and their rules are controlled by the political parties. The Democratic National Committee could convene before the convention opens on Aug. 19 and change how things will work, but that isn’t likely as long as Biden wants to continue seeking reelection.

The current rules read: “Delegates elected to the national convention pledged to a presidential candidate shall in all good conscience reflect the sentiments of those who elected them.”

Image

VP Kamala Harris couldn’t automatically replace Biden

The vice president is Biden’s running mate, but that doesn’t mean she can swap in for him at the top of the ticket by default. Biden also can’t decree that she replace him should he suddenly decide to leave the race.

The Democratic National Convention is being held in Chicago, but the party has announced that it will hold a virtual roll call to formally nominate Biden before in-person proceedings begin. The exact date for the roll call has not yet been set.

If Biden opts to abandon his reelection campaign, Harris would likely join other top Democratic candidates looking to replace him. But that would probably create a scenario where she and others end up lobbying individual state delegations at the convention for their support.

That hasn’t happened for Democrats since 1960, when John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson jockeyed for votes during that year’s Democratic convention in Los Angeles.

Other potential Democratic candidates would also face challenges

In addition to the vice president, others that had endorsed Biden in 2024 while harboring their own presidential aspirations for future cycles include California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Illinois Gov. J. B. Pritzker and California Rep. Ro Khanna.

Still others who Biden bested during the party’s 2020 presidential primary could also try again, including Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, as well as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

If Biden were to abruptly leave the race, conservative groups have suggested they will file lawsuits around the country, potentially questioning the legality of the Democratic candidate’s name on the ballot.

But Elaine Kamarck, a senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, who wrote a book about the presidential nominating process and is also a member of the Democratic National Committee’s rulemaking arm, said that courts have consistently stayed out of political primaries as long as parties running them weren’t doing anything that would contradict other constitutional rights, such as voter suppression based on race.

Here’s What the Court’s Chevron Ruling Could Mean in Everyday Terms

The decision is expected to prompt a rush of litigation challenging regulations across the entire federal government, from food safety to the environment.

Gray columns and a white flag on the front of a the Environmental Protection Agency building.

By Coral Davenport ,  Christina Jewett ,  Alan Rappeport ,  Margot Sanger-Katz ,  Noam Scheiber and Noah Weiland

  • June 28, 2024

The Supreme Court’s decision on Friday to limit the broad regulatory authority of federal agencies could lead to the elimination or weakening of thousands of rules on the environment, health care, worker protection, food and drug safety, telecommunications, the financial sector and more.

The decision is a major victory in a decades-long campaign by conservative activists to shrink the power of the federal government, limiting the reach and authority of what those activists call “the administrative state.”

The court’s opinion could make it easier for opponents of federal regulations to challenge them in court, prompting a rush of new litigation, while also injecting uncertainty into businesses and industries.

“If Americans are worried about their drinking water, their health, their retirement account, discrimination on the job, if they fly on a plane, drive a car, if they go outside and breathe the air — all of these day-to-day activities are run through a massive universe of federal agency regulations,” said Lisa Heinzerling, an expert in administrative law at Georgetown University. “And this decision now means that more of those regulations could be struck down by the courts.”

The decision effectively ends a legal precedent known as “Chevron deference,” after a 1984 Supreme Court ruling. That decision held that when Congress passes a law that lacks specificity, courts must give wide leeway to decisions made by the federal agencies charged with implementing that law. The theory was that scientists, economists and other specialists at the agencies have more expertise than judges in determining regulations and that the executive branch is also more accountable to voters.

Since then, thousands of legal decisions have relied on the Chevron doctrine when challenges have been made to regulations stemming from laws like the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act, the 1970 Clean Air Act , the 2010 Affordable Care Act and others.

In writing laws, Congress has frequently used open-ended directives, such as “ensuring the rule is in the public interest,” leaving it to agency experts to write rules to limit toxic smog, ensure that health plans cover basic medical services, ensure the safety of drugs and cosmetics and protect consumers from risky corporate financial behavior.

But that gave too much power to unelected government officials, according to conservatives, who ran a coordinated, multiyear campaign to end the Chevron doctrine. They believe the courts, not administrative agencies, should have the power to interpret statutes. The effort was led by Republican attorneys general, conservative legal activists and their funders, several with ties to large corporations, and supporters of former President Donald J. Trump.

“Overturning Chevron was a shared goal of the conservative movement and the Trump administration. It was expressed constantly,” said Mandy Gunasekara, who served as chief of staff at the E.P.A. under President Trump and has helped write Project 2025 , a policy blueprint for a next Republican administration. “It creates a massive opportunity for these regulations to be challenged. And it could galvanize additional momentum toward reining in the administrative state writ large if the administration changes in November.”

Still, Jonathan Berry, who served as a senior Labor Department official under Mr. Trump, noted that overturning the Chevron doctrine itself “doesn’t immediately blow anything up.”

Rather, Mr. Berry said, the fate of the regulations will be determined by what happens when they start moving through the courts without the protection of Chevron. “The mystery is exactly how much of this stuff goes down,” Mr. Berry said.

Here is a look at how the decision might affect various government agencies.

The Environmental Protection Agency

Environmentalists fear that the end of the Chevron doctrine will mean the elimination of hundreds of E.P.A. rules aimed at limiting air and water pollution, protecting people from toxic chemicals and, especially, tackling climate change.

Over the past six months, the Biden administration has issued the most ambitious rules in the country’s history aimed at cutting climate-warming pollution from cars , trucks , power plants and oil and gas wells . Without those rules, it would very likely be impossible for President Biden to achieve his goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by the end of the decade, which analysts say all major economies must do to avoid the most deadly and catastrophic impacts of global warming.

All of the Biden climate rules have already been the target of lawsuits that are winding their way through the courts.

Legal experts say that the reversal of Chevron will not remove E.P.A.’s foundational legal obligation to regulate climate-warming pollution: that was explicitly detailed in a 2007 Supreme Court decision and in 2022 legislation passed by Democrats in anticipation of challenges to that authority.

But the specific regulations — such those designed to cut car and truck pollution by accelerating the transition to electric vehicles, or to slash power plant pollution with the use of costly carbon capture and sequestration technology — could now be more legally vulnerable.

The result would quite likely be that stringent climate rules designed to sharply reduce emissions could be replaced by much looser rules that cut far less pollution. Experts say that could also be the fate of existing rules on smog, clean water and hazardous chemicals.

Labor Agencies

The elimination of the Chevron deference could affect workers in a variety of ways, making it harder for the government to enact workplace safety regulations and enforce minimum wage and overtime rules.

One recent example was in April, when the Biden administration raised the salary level below which salaried workers automatically become eligible for time-and-a-half overtime pay, to nearly $59,000 per year from about $35,000, beginning on Jan. 1. Business groups have challenged the Labor Department’s authority to set a so-called salary threshold and such challenges will have far better odds of success without the Chevron precedent, experts said.

The shift could also rein in protections for workers who publicly challenge the policies of their employers, according to Charlotte Garden, a professor of labor law at the University of Minnesota. The National Labor Relations Board often concludes that a single worker has the right to protest low pay or harassment or attendance policies without being disciplined or fired. But the relevant law refers to “concerted activities,” meaning the protection may now apply only to groups of employees who stage such protests, not individuals, Professor Garden said.

Food and Drug Administration

The Food and Drug Administration flexes significant power when it sets the standards for how new drugs must be studied and whether they are safe and effective before they are approved for use. Attorneys who worked at the agency said that companies chafing at that high bar for approvals might now challenge those regulations. Others said legal challenges could ultimately affect drug prices.

Challenges are also expected in the agency’s tobacco division, which authorizes the sale of new cigarettes and e-cigarettes with the intent to protect public health. “I would expect the industry to attack the F.D.A.’s authority to do premarket review at all,” said Desmond Jenson, deputy director of the commercial tobacco control program at the Public Health Law Center.

Others noted the Chevron decision could have a chilling effect, compelling the F.D.A. to proceed quite carefully, given the potential for litigation, if it moves forward with proposals to ban menthol cigarettes or make them less addictive by slashing nicotine levels.

Abortion opponents say the ruling could work in their favor as they seek to bring another case against the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of an abortion medication to the Supreme Court, which rejected their effort to undo the agency’s approval of the drug this month.

Kristi Hamrick, a strategist for Students for Life of America, an anti-abortion organization, said in a statement that such a case was likely to get a better reception “when the F.D.A. is no longer given the benefit of the doubt.”

Health Care

The court’s ruling could affect how Medicare, Medicaid and Affordable Care Act insurance plans are administered, health law experts said, as opponents gain an opportunity to challenge how these huge programs operate.

The health care system is governed by elaborate regulations covering how hospitals operate, what providers are paid for medical services and how insurance companies are monitored by the government. Much of that regulation is grounded in interpretation of laws that date back decades. Major industries could be affected if rules are changed.

“There’s an awful lot of regulation that flies under the radar that’s just about making sure the trains run on time,” said Nicholas Bagley, a law professor at the University of Michigan.

Rachel Sachs, a health law expert at the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, said that the complex set of rules devised and governed by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services could be challenged in new ways.

“There’s a lot of work to do in that process,” she said. “And therefore there are a lot of opportunities for challengers to pick at specific choices that C.M.S. and H.H.S. are making in the interpretation of these rules.”

The Supreme Court decision will require Congress to specify exactly what agencies like the C.D.C. can and cannot do, several analysts said. “Nobody has any confidence that Congress can get its act together to do that,” said Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association.

“I think the decision as written solidifies employment for lawyers and judges, and undermines the authority of experts,” he added.

Other scientists also expressed doubt that Congress or the judiciary could remain abreast of constantly evolving scientific evidence. “To keep up with that pace of change, even for a medical or scientific professional, is very challenging,” said Karen Knudsen, chief executive of the American Cancer Society.

The Biden administration has written health regulations anticipating a world without the Chevron deference, said Abbe R. Gluck, a health law expert at Yale Law School who served in the White House at the beginning of Mr. Biden’s term. For that reason, she thinks litigation over the most recent rules may be less influenced by this change than challenges concerning some older regulations.

“The Supreme Court has not relied on Chevron in quite a few years,” she said. “So the federal government, including H.H.S., has become accustomed to drafting regulations and making its interpretation arguments as if Chevron did not exist.”

“They’ve already adjusted,” Ms. Gluck said.

Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service

The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service both have broad mandates to interpret legislation when they write rules and regulations and enforce the tax code.

Since the Inflation Reduction Act passed in 2022, the Treasury Department has been racing to roll out regulations related to billions of dollars of clean energy tax credits that provide huge incentives for things such as the manufacturing of batteries or the purchase of electric vehicles. The Treasury Department has received pushback from some lawmakers who contend that it has not followed the intent of the law.

Although Congress creates the tax code through legislation, the I.R.S. has wide latitude in how the tax laws are administered. Accounting experts have suggested that the court’s ruling could complicate the agency’s ability to administer the tax code without specific direction from Congress.

A recent example is how the agency last year delayed enforcement of a contentious tax policy that would require users of digital wallets and e-commerce platforms to report small transactions. The new provision was introduced in the tax code in 2021 but was strongly opposed by lobbyists and small businesses.

The I.R.S. received criticism from some lawmakers for delaying the policy, but the agency defended its decision by arguing that taxpayers needed a longer transition period before the measure should be enforced to avoid a chaotic tax season.

Some Democrats start calling for Biden to step aside and 'throw in the towel' on 2024

Some Democrats began calling for President Joe Biden to step aside so the party can nominate another candidate after he stumbled badly in Thursday's debate against his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump.

"This was like a champion boxer who gets in the ring past his prime and needs his corner to throw in the towel," said a Democratic lawmaker, adding that he meant Biden should exit the race.

The options for a switch are limited : If the president doesn't choose to leave of his own volition, there would have to be a revolt among Democratic National Convention delegates, the vast majority of whom were elected on their pledge to nominate Biden. But that's what some Democrats were thinking after Thursday night's debate.

It's “time to talk about an open convention and a new Democratic nominee,” said a second Democratic lawmaker who has been a solid Biden supporter.

The fear among these Democrats is that the version of Biden that showed up to the debate — one bearing a likeness to the caricature Trump and his allies have portrayed of a man unequipped for the job — cannot win in November.

Even those who want a replacement candidate doubt that the party can move Biden aside, aren’t certain who could win the party’s nod in his absence and don’t know whether a substitute could beat Trump in November. Going into the debate, which was hosted by CNN, polls showed a close race between Biden and Trump.“There is a sense of shock at how he came out at the beginning of this debate. How his voice sounded. He seemed a little disoriented. ... There are going to be discussions about whether he should continue,” David Axelrod, a top adviser to former President Barack Obama, said on CNN. “Only he can decide if he’s going to continue.”

Axelrod predicted that Biden wouldn’t be inclined to leave the race, noting that “this is a guy with a lot of pride ... who believes in himself.”

The last time a president who was eligible to run for re-election didn’t appear on the November ballot was in 1968, when Lyndon Johnson, facing certain defeat in the Democratic primaries, chose not to seek a full second term.

Still, several Democrats predicted that calls for Biden to take the Johnson route would multiply in the coming days.

“The chatter of replacement is absolutely going to explode,” said a veteran Democratic strategist who has worked on presidential campaigns. “There is no coming back from this disaster.”

At the same time, top Biden allies dismissed the prospect of a change at the top of the ticket. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat whom many in the party see as a potential Biden alternative or a future presidential candidate, said “no” when asked whether he would urge Biden to end his campaign.

“This is just bad, no matter how you spin it,” said a veteran Democratic operative. “But everyone knows it’s too late to switch. But the donors will make those decisions, as they always do. Hence why we got Biden” in 2020.

Before Thursday's debate, Trump's campaign released an ad telling voters that if they elect Biden, they will end up with Vice President Kamala Harris as president — a suggestion that the octogenarian president would die in office or have to resign. The biggest question Democrats would have to resolve if Biden dropped out of the race before the convention is whether they would nominate Harris — whose approval ratings , like Biden's, are underwater. Others who were mentioned Thursday night include Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“I look forward to being in Chicago when Gavin Newsom is nominated from the floor,” a Democratic strategist said after the first 20 minutes of the debate, adding about Biden: “Should have gone on offense on abortion. Can’t keep his train of thought.”

A Biden departure would leave Democrats with a potentially brutal fight over whether to simply elevate Harris, the first Black vice president and first female vice president — one that could split key base constituencies at a time when the party needs to unite if it hopes to win. Still, the prospect of a bloody intraparty battle didn't stop some operatives from concluding Biden should go.

"They need to change nomination now," a Democratic operative said. "Or just put Harris on top of the ticket."

A Democratic strategist with ties to Capitol Hill said lawmakers will be reluctant to publicly call for Biden to give up his campaign.

"No one wants to be the first," the strategist said. "But everyone is brushing up on DNC rules and procedures right now."

The same strategist explained his own affection for Biden and his record, pointing to the president's responses to wars in Europe and the Middle East, his personnel appointments and his domestic record — along with Biden's 2020 victory over Trump. But the strategist also thinks Biden must exit.

"I am for the first time beginning to think calling for Biden to step aside isn't heretical; it's the only responsible thing to do," he said. "If we lose this election to Trump because we were too afraid to admit we were wrong about his age or too worried of an open convention, we can no longer call our party the defenders of democracy."

Several current and former Democratic elected officials chose to keep their powder dry when asked about Biden's showing Thursday night.

"The best thing I can do to help Joe Biden is to pretend I didn't get your text," said a third Democratic lawmaker.
