The larger ones consist of two pump bottles with a removable clip to prevent accidental deployment, two spray bottles, and two flip-cap bottles. The smaller ones are miniature cream jars. All eight are made from clear PET plastic, which we found durable yet lightweight enough for travel. We also liked that we could easily see how much product was left.

We appreciated the thoughtful inclusion of a pipette, a funnel, and a spatula to help with decanting products from their original containers. They made the bottles relatively easy to fill, although we did experience some spillage when decanting thick body lotion. Nevertheless, there was no leaking or visible wear and tear after our intensive testing process. The set also includes a sheet of labels and a clear plastic toiletry bag. The only real drawback? None of the bottles are particularly big, making this option suitable for short trips only.

They’re also 100 percent leakproof, waterproof, and airtight, as proven by our testing process. We found them incredibly durable and can’t imagine a scenario that would result in them being punctured or crushed. They are small (each one carries just 0.56 ounces), which could be a drawback. However, a capacity calculator on the brand website suggests you can carry approximately a week’s worth of products, depending on how regularly you use each one.

We were particularly impressed with the bottles’ no-drip valves, which successfully prevented leaks. All four bottles use the same shape and dispensing method—a pro for those who want lots of capacity for fewer products, and a drawback for those with a more complex personal care routine. 

Having said that, we did feel that this set is so reasonably priced, there’s nothing to stop you from buying multiple sets if you have more products to pack. Instead of labels, the bottles come in four separate shades to distinguish between them. We also liked that their wide opening makes them easy to fill, even with thicker liquids and gels. And when it comes to cleaning them, the bendable silicone easily accommodates a bottle brush. All colorways include a transparent carry case.

We were impressed by the capacity of the largest bottles, which we felt could easily hold at least four washes’ worth of shampoo and conditioner. 

The bottles are made of durable yet flexible food-grade silicone, with wide mouths for easy filling and cleaning. We appreciated the inclusion of two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush to help with these tasks, as well as a sheet of labels. Most of the containers held up well to our durability tests with no leaks or spills. The only exception was one of the jars, which suffered a broken lid. The set comes in a transparent carry bag and could fit into a quart-sized Ziploc (a TSA requirement) with some skillful maneuvering, although it was tight.

The INSFIT set is ideal for those who like to keep things simple with only a handful of essential products but also tend to travel for longer and need as much capacity as TSA will allow. It features four identical 3-ounce silicone bottles large enough to hold at least one to two weeks’ worth of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and sunscreen (or similar). The bottles are squeezable, which makes dispensing simple, although we found that thicker lotions and gels were easier to squeeze if the bottle was at least half full.

Other highlights include fully removable caps and wide mouths for mess-free filling and easy cleaning, and three-layered lids that are essentially leakproof. Even during our pressure test, caps remained securely in place, and afterward, the bottles still looked brand new. In fact, we were shocked to find out how affordable this set is given its evident quality. We also liked the stylish, see-through carry bag and the fact that there’s a special place on the caps to stick the included labels so that they adhere properly.

Made of waterproof 30D Cordura ripstop nylon with proprietary welded construction, the Matador FlatPak Toiletry Bottles are by far the most technical option on this list. With their flat-pack design and sturdy quality, they’re designed especially for adventures and expeditions where saving on space and weight is a priority . With a capacity of 3 ounces each, they’re five times lighter and 3.5 times more compact than standard silicone bottles, and pliable enough to fit into tight spaces: the ultimate backpacking companion. 

We found them easy to fill with any liquid that was the consistency of shampoo or thinner. Thicker gels and lotions were tricky since the mouth wasn’t as wide as that of standard travel bottles. Still, any mess is easy to clean off the waterproof exterior. They fit easily into a quart-sized Ziploc, and we love the snap hook for attaching to the outside of your backpack for on-the-go use. The loop also features a spot for writing a description of the contents with a permanent marker. As expected, the packs survived all our tests with zero leaks or signs of damage.

Our overall favorite was the LiquiSnugs Premium Travel Bottles set. These bottles stood out for their durable, leakproof silicone construction and thoughtful extras including adjustable labels and individual suction pads. For the most budget-friendly option, choose the small yet sturdily versatile Vitog Travel Bottles Kit .

Upon receiving the bottles, our first step was to examine their overall quality and design and note any unique features. Then, we filled at least three of the bottles in the set: one with lotion, one with micellar water, and one with shampoo. For each one, we noted how easy it was to fill without spilling, how easy it was to clean if spillage did occur, and how appropriate each bottle would be for holding different types of liquid. We also tested how easy it was to open the bottle and dispense the product inside. 

Next, we compressed the bottles in our palms to mimic pressure. We shook them, rolled them, squeezed them, and threw them to stimulate rough handling in transit, noting how well they withstood this treatment. Our final test was to put all of the bottles from the set into a quart-sized Ziploc bag, and then inside a toiletry bag. Then, we dropped them from waist height three times, always from different angles, to see whether any breakages or leaks occurred and whether the bottles showed any signs of wear and tear. 

Each set was scored on a scale of one to five for ease of use, quality, design, performance, and value. Average scores were used to determine our category winners.

Other Travel Toiletry Bottles We Tested

GLOBEGEAR Travel Bottles : This nine-piece set features a solid range of containers and tools made of hard plastic that doesn't feel flimsy. We deducted points for the skimpy capacity of the bottles, which would only last a few days or applications (and made filling the bottles difficult), though the affordable price makes this a good option for the infrequent traveler.

Kitsch Travel Containers : Fans of variety will appreciate the range of products included in this compact kit. It won't set you back much and, accordingly, we feel it also won't last long. We like the idea of the flat containers but found them somewhat difficult to fill.

Cosywell Travel Containers : The Cosywell Containers are all the same shape in 10- and 20-milliliter capacities. We found the plastic and silicone jars easy to fill and well-designed, but they're more suited to thick liquids such as gels and creams.

What to Look For in Travel Toiletry Bottles

Durability is key when choosing travel toiletry bottles since containers that are easily punctured or cracked will result in a mess that’s at best inconvenient and at worst potentially expensive or upsetting depending on how much product is wasted and whether any other items in your carry-on are affected. Look for options made out of sturdy hard plastic or thick, flexible silicone, then check user reviews to get an idea of how the construction holds up under real-life travel conditions. If you’re planning an extreme adventure, technical options like the waterproof flat-pack bottles from Matador may be worth the extra expense.

Leakproofness

A bottle doesn’t have to break for leaks to occur—all it takes is a poorly constructed seal or lid. Look for bottles with a triple-layered leakproof cap and jars with a secure screw top. Pump bottles should come with a removable clip that prevents them from being deployed accidentally. Again, user reviews help check how efficient these measures are (it’s easy for a brand to advertise their product as leakproof, even if it’s not). Some brands, like Cadence, actually guarantee the efficacy of their leakproof design. Just in case, we always recommend storing toiletry bottles in a waterproof bag or Ziploc as a second line of defense. 

If you plan on packing your toiletry bottles in your carry-on bag, you must make sure that none of them exceed the TSA-approved limit of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Some sets are made up of identical large bottles of around 3 ounces, giving you the maximum allowable capacity for each of your products. However, because all bottles must fit in a single quart-sized Ziploc bag, this limits the number of bottles to around four. 

If you have more products to pack, you may prefer a set that divides this capacity between a greater number of smaller bottles and containers—especially if you only require some of your liquids in very small quantities. The length of your trip will also dictate how big you need your bottles to be unless you only plan on using your carry-on liquids as a backup in case the full-size versions in your checked luggage get delayed. 

Toiletries can be stored in opaque, translucent, or transparent bottles of any color as long as each individual bottle does not exceed the maximum capacity limit. For carry-on bags, most authorities including TSA set that limit at 3.4 ounces. Liquids can be in their original container or decanted into any container of your choosing (even one that’s labeled incorrectly), as long as these size restrictions are adhered to. 

Most airport authorities—including TSA—rule that bottles containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes cannot exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) if you wish to pack them in your carry-on luggage . In addition, all of these bottles must fit inside a quart-sized Ziploc bag and be screened separately from the rest of your luggage at security. Containers that exceed this limit will not be permitted, even if the volume of the product inside is less than 3.4 ounces (for example, if you have a half-used bottle of conditioner). Note that these restrictions do not apply to checked luggage.

Although toiletry bottles don’t have to be labeled from a legal perspective, many people like to do so to ensure they don’t end up brushing their teeth with expensive moisturizer, or vice versa. Some travel bottles come with waterproof stickers, especially for this purpose, and you can also purchase them separately online. This is a better option than writing on a standard office label by hand since toiletry bottles frequently get wet and ink can run and cause staining or become illegible. Alternatively, a permanent marker applied directly to the bottle could be an option if you’re always going to use the same container for the same product.

Consider these wisely and you’ll be stoked on the investment you made into your anywhere-anytime water drinking experience.

Your Water Bottle’s Material

You’ve got three (hah, see) basic choices with this each with their own pros and cons:

• Plastic – But you said plastic was the antichrist and- Hey! Not all plastics are equally evil – some have just committed offences considered especially heinous. Pretty much any filtered drinking bottle (unless they’re particularly terrible) will be constructed from BPA-free plastic. The especially good amongst those will be constructed from Tritan which is both BPA-free and durable as all hell. The down shot to plastic is that there is almost no insulation (so your water will be life-nourishing but not at a refreshing-cool temperature) and they’ll still never be as durable as steel.
• Stainless Steel – Tougher and stronger than plastic, a stainless steel filter water bottle will survive all the calamities of travel and is the optimal choice for clobbering someone. If you’re ever in the situation where you need to beat someone up with a water bottle, go for stainless steel. But at the cost of all that extra toughness (and insulation) comes the extra weight. Water goes in the outer sleeve, you push the filter in, and the water filters into the inner container ready to be drunk without murdering your stomach lining. It’s a simple yet highly effective method of water purification.

You see, the Grayl water purifier removes just about anything that’s out to ruin your day 24-48 hours after ingestion and the following incubation period. That was on one filter straw, mind you. Not a single replacement was needed. One LifeStraw water filter lasts for approximately 1000 gallons (4000L) of water so it comes with the peace of mind that you’re not going to suddenly be filter-less mid-adventure.

Of course, there has to be a caveat with the LifeStraw Go Water Bottle to make it runner-up. There is and that’s in your protection coverage. The LifeStraw bottle falls short in this area filtering out only protozoa: no viruses, chemicals, or heavy metals. For this reason, it falls behind in the race of the LifeStraw vs. the Grayl.

But if full coverage isn’t something you need, then the LifeStraw Go is an excellent choice. Coming in at a much more digestible price, the water bottle is a good size (22 fl oz/650 ml) and weight (10 oz/285 g). It’s also durable; I watched a mate drop his down a few mountains in the Himalayas and he just kept sipping water from it like it was no problem.

3. Epic Water Filters Epic Nalgene OG -Best Cheap Filtered Water Bottle

We have all probably owned a Nalgene at some point. This Epic Nalgene OG filter bottle by Epic Walter Filters takes the same classic bottle we all enjoy up a few notches by adding the cleverly designed water filter element. Practical, easy to use, and very importantly – this bottle won’t break the bank either.

The Epic Nalgene OG uses their patented  Everyday Filter  system – and as the name implies – it is intended for everyday use. Like any filter bottle, the filter does not have an endless life span and the filter will need to be replaced after roughly 75 gallons. Speaking from experience – I typically end up filtering 3-4 liters of water per day when I am traveling or backpacking so one filter can get me through almost two months on the road or in the mountains.

If you are going to be in countries with ultra-sketchy water sources, keep in mind the Epic Nalgene OG is not a complete purifier.

I told you Grayl bottles made the list twice. This is Grayl’s ultralight option for all the gram-counting fiends. It’s smaller than the Geopress holding only 16.9 fl oz (500 mL) and weighing in at 10.9 oz (310 g).

That’s about your only difference though because all of the high-quality badittude of the Geopress still carries over. The Grayl Ultralight still filters out all the terrible beasties, it’s still made of high-quality materials, and it still kicks ass.

It comes in at a lower price than the Geopress and doesn’t hurt as much if you drop it on your toe. Its lower weight and smaller frame make this the best filtered bottle for hiking and anything outdoors where the bulky choice doesn’t cut it.

5. Seychelle Extreme Water Filter Bottle – Best Filtered Water Bottle for Extreme Conditions

When I say extreme conditions, I’m mean extreme conditions. The Seychelle water filtration bottle does it all. It does your bacteria, your viruses, your protozoa, your radiological contaminants… wait, what?

6. Clearly Filtered No.1 Filtered Water Bottle – Best Stainless Steel Filtered Water Bottle

If life was a Jackie Chan movie where you partook in a series of increasingly zany fights using household objects as weapons, then this would be the bottle to bitchslap some generic henchman with.

It’s stainless steel: that means you’re going to have a seriously difficult time breaking it no matter how many Himalayan mountains you drop it off! That also means that the bottle has some insulation to keep your water refreshingly cool (or heart-meltingly warm) while you adventure.

The Clearly Filtered also filters out all the nasties (with a disclaimer): viruses, bacteria, and metals begone! It’s even a water bottle that filters fluoride!

So what’s not so awesome? Well, its construction just isn’t as tight as many of the other entries on this list. It doesn’t feel as well put-together as a lot of other water filter drinking bottles with the lid having some noticeable threading difficulties.

Now, mind you, I don’t know why you’d want a glass filter bottle for travelling. If we were graphing drops off Himalayan mountaintops survived by filtered water bottles, then the Escape Bottle would certainly come last.

But, it’s still a good filtration bottle that comes with all the bells and whistles you’ve come to expect from the best water purifier bottles. Replaceable filter that protects you from the whole shebang ( BUT (and here’s that disclaimer), not with the stock filter; you have to buy the Outdoor filter separately), and it comes in a silicone sleeve (to counter that whole ‘made of glass’ thing). One of the best parts of testing a variety of toiletry bottles is discovering that the least expensive set can still rival a pricier alternative. This 11-piece kit has spray, pump, and screw-top bottles so you can fill each one with various liquids or use the two jars for jewelry and medication. The clear bottles are ideal for being able to see how much product is in each container and when it needs to be refilled. 

We had no issues filling each container with micellar water and shampoo but we had a bit of trouble getting the thicker lotion to filter through the funnel. However, once everything was filled up, these budget-friendly bottles stood up against our drops and tosses without even the tiniest droplet escaping. All of the bottles are 1.3 ounces so we wish there was a bit more variety in the capacities but, considering this set is under $1 per bottle, we’re plenty satisfied with the durable and easy-to-use selection.

With the wide-mouth openings, it was a breeze to fill up each bottle with shampoo, micellar water, and thick lotion. These aesthetically-pleasing magnetic capsules are the most unique set of toiletry bottles we tried. The small capsules each hold 0.56 ounces and the set comes with six hexagon-shaped containers that conveniently stick to one another via magnets on every side. This allows travelers to alter the shape of the set as needed to fit it into a toiletry bag. And, after six months of near-constant use, the magnets and labels are all holding up. The capsules remained completely sealed when we dropped them onto the floor several times and the thick plastic material wasn’t dented or damaged at all. We love that when you order the set of capsules, you can customize the label printed onto each removable tile so they can be switched between the capsules as needed. Our only gripe is that the capsules are very small so you may need to use multiple to bring enough of the same product for a week-long trip, or opt for one of their larger options instead.

Other Toiletry Bottles We Liked

While the containers below didn’t leak badly, the biggest issue we had with these still-high-scoring toiletry bottles is that their quality felt a bit lower than our top performers. 

Cosywell Travel Containers : These ultra-compact screw-top containers are ideal for thicker products like gel or creams but the micellar water leaked ever so slightly, and we wish the set came with a few other bottle types for variety.

Kitsch Travel Bottles : Designed for saving space and lying flat, these baggie-style containers are super easy to fill with product but the quality feels a bit flimsy and we worried that the bags could break open if too much pressure was applied while traveling.

We do some pretty serious testing in our New York City lab when it comes to determining the best of the best travel products and this toiletry bottle test was no exception. For this test, we poured travel essentials like shampoo, micellar water, and lotion into the toiletry bottles, tubes, and capsules to see how easy it was to fill each one up. Then, we squeezed, dropped, tossed, and shook the containers to simulate the rough handling and pressure when you travel by air, car, train, or even on foot with toiletry bottles. Did shampoo explode from one bottle and shoot several feet in the air? Maybe. But don’t worry, we didn’t recommend that one. 

After some rigorous (and occasionally messy) lab testing, we brought each set of toiletry bottles out on real trips to utilize over a six-month period. Arguably, the most important thing when it comes to toiletry bottles is that they safely contain the potentially pricey skin and hair care products held inside wherever you go, so we closely examined each bottle post-testing for any leaks or damage. Our favorite, winning toiletry bottles are easy to fill up, completely leakproof, and compact enough to pack in toiletry cases. 

Tips for Buying Toiletry Bottles

Prioritize leak-proof containers.

The most important thing to look for in a toiletry bottle is that it performs as expected which means all of the liquid remains sealed in the container. It’s hard to tell whether or not toiletry bottles are leak-proof until you travel with them so it’s important to read reviews and seal the bottles as tightly as you can before you pack them away for a trip. 

Know the types of bottles 

It’s amazing how many types of miniature containers there are for travel these days so it can be helpful to know which type of bottle you need depending on which products you’ll bring. There are silicone squeeze bottles that are ideal for shampoo or conditioner but if you’re packing any type of spray product, you’ll want a hard plastic bottle that comes with a spray cap. For pills, vitamins, or even jewelry, a capsule or container with a screw lid are a great option for storing smaller items. For face wash or lotion, a hard plastic bottle with a lockable pump lid can be helpful.

Consider the capacity 

The TSA restricts carry-on liquids to 3.4-ounce containers so if you’re planning to only carry a bag into the cabin, you need bottles at or below the size limits. Smaller 1- or 2-ounce containers can be easier to pack but that means you’ll have less product to work with so be sure to pack accordingly depending on the length of your trip and the amount of product you think you’ll need.

For carrying liquids onto a plane, the TSA requires all containers to be at or under the 3.4-ounce size limitations. All bottles must fit in a quart-sized bag and, if a bottle is larger than 3.4 ounces, it must be checked before going through security. According to the TSA, gels, creams, pastes, and aerosols, all count as liquids and must be in approved bottles.

In general, silicone toiletry bottles are more durable than hard plastic bottles, as they aren’t prone to cracking or breaking like harder plastic materials. However, when it comes to leaking, both can have the potential to expel liquids so it depends on the quality of each product. 

Cleaning out toiletry bottles can be extremely difficult depending on the style of the container. Bottles with wide mouths can be easily rinsed out and dried but other bottles with smaller necks or no cap can make it difficult to switch products. In some cases, it might be easier just to keep refilling the same bottle with the same thing but some sets will come with brushes or spatulas to clean out all of the product.

Buying overpriced water bottles is an option, of course, but who wants to throw away that kind of money and contribute to plastic waste in this day and age? And sure, you could just drink from the tap, but in many places that means risking foul, weird-tasting water — or worse, violent stomach illness.

But there’s a much better solution: reusable water bottles that come with their own built-in filtration system so you can have cool, clean sips wherever your travels take you. In fact, the best filter water bottles are a must-have when traveling to destinations that lack plentiful clean water, whether that's a far-away country or a wilderness camping trip in the next county over.

Once you have a filter water bottle for travel, you might even start using it for everyday use at home or in the office. Even when traveling within the United States, you can use these travel water bottles in hotels, as they make water taste extra-clean and fresh.

But how do these reusable bottles actually work? And what are the best filtered water bottles for travel? We consulted the hydration experts to find out.

What do water bottle filters remove?

Filtered water bottles are capable of removing lots of gross stuff from tap water and freshwater sources (think rivers, lakes, springs, etc.), but they’re not all made the same. As Chip Kilduff , associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute points out, it really depends on the types of water filters a manufacturer uses. The most common water filters for travel include activated carbon filters and membrane microfilters; some bottles have both while others only utilize one.

Generally speaking, a quality water filtration bottle should remove several contaminants from the water. According to Dr. Kelvin Fernandez, a physician and healthcare educator at Ace Med Boards , these include particulates like sand and silt, as well as harmful elements like bacteria, viruses, and certain chemicals. The vast majority of contaminants can be removed with a membrane microfilter, but you may also want an activated carbon filter to remove things like chlorine, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, pesticides and any weird flavors or odors.

Do water filter bottles remove bacteria?

The best filtered water bottle can remove bacteria from tap and freshwater sources, but it all depends on the size of the pores in the filters used.

“The filters are rated by the size of particles that they allow to pass,” says Jason Hitchcock, an expert survivalist and avid outdoorsman with a background in engineering, who is also the founder of the emergency preparedness website Survival Stoic . “For example, a 0.1 micron water filter will allow anything that is smaller than 0.1 microns to pass through the filter.”

For reference, protozoa are typically around 5 to 15 microns in size and bacteria are typically 0.2 to 10 microns in size.

Kilduff goes on to explain that the membrane microfilters commonly used in filter water bottles for travel have a pore size ranging from 0.2 micron to about 10 micron. He confirms that this is sufficient to remove particles, protozoans and bacteria with high efficiency.

Additionally, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has guidance for campers worried about common parasites and bacteria like giardia. If you're searching for the best filter water bottles for hiking and you're worried about giardia, look for filters with labels that include phrases such as:

• Reverse osmosis
• Absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller (this is not the same as "nominal pore size of 1 micron")
• Tested and certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53
• Tested and certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 58 for cyst removal

Do water filters remove viruses?

Bacteria removal is definitely more likely than virus removal, Kilduff says, but a water filter could provide some protection if it can filter 0.1 microns or smaller.

“Some of the best filters will filter down to 0.1 microns,” Hitchcock points out from his extensive research and personal experience with the top-rated water filtration bottles on the market today. “[But] viruses can be between 0.0004 and 0.1 microns in size… so some viruses may be allowed to pass.”

That said, most viruses do not survive in drinking water. However, if you are in an area with a heavy virus outbreak, Hitchcock recommends boiling your water to be safe. Learn more in Mashable's guide to water filters .

What should you filter out of tap water?

Just because a water filter can filter out a long list of impurities doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the filtered water bottle that you need for your travels; it really depends on where you’re headed.

“In a city, a basic filter that removes particulates and chlorine might be sufficient,” says Dr. Fernandez. “But for wilderness camping or traveling in certain countries, you might want a more advanced filter that can handle bacteria, viruses and possibly chemicals.”

What's the difference between a water filter and a water purifier?

It’s important to note that water filtration and water purification are not the same, but they do go hand-in-hand to create the cleanest water possible.

Filtration can remove the stuff you can see in water (and lots that you can't), such as sediment, microplastics, bacteria, parasites and more. Purifiers, however, remove impurities — such as viruses — that may be too small to be caught and removed by a filter. Water purifiers also kill other microbes, pathogens and bacteria in water — but they can't get rid of those larger particles like silt and sediment.

“Disinfection — or the inactivation of bacteria, protozoa and viruses — can be done using chemicals like chlorine or iodine, or using UV light (for example, the Steripen from Katadyn),” says Kilduff. “Combined with filtration, this can provide additional protection.”

Filtered water bottles let you create better-tasting water almost anywhere you go. After we tested five of them, our pick is the Brita Premium Filtering Water Bottle . Its activated carbon filter removes chlorine compounds, which are used as a disinfectant in most public water supplies and are the cause of the off-flavor that many people dislike about tap water.

But we have reservations about filter bottles in general. Most of them make you suck the water through the filter, and that’s not exactly easy—it’s like drinking a thick milkshake through a straw. And most bottle filters remove only chlorine, not other things you may be concerned about, like lead, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), and microplastics.

If you have access to another source of filtered water, such as a filter pitcher , office water cooler, or under-sink filter , then using that to fill a reusable water bottle is a more convenient and versatile way to bring along fresh-tasting water that’s likely more thoroughly purified too.

The bottle itself is well designed for carrying with you to work, school, outdoor events, and errands. It’s sturdy, didn’t leak a drop in our tests, and was easier to drink from than some of the competition, thanks to its comfortable mouthpiece. It comes in many colors, a few sizes, and both insulated stainless steel and BPA-free plastic (which is not insulated) versions. The plastic version is dishwasher safe for cleaning, and the replacement filters, which last about two months, are less than $3 apiece.

The research

In testing and writing about water filters for Wirecutter since 2016, I’ve spoken with the two main US filter-certification organizations, NSF and the Water Quality Association, to understand how their testing is conducted. I’ve interviewed engineers and product managers at many water filter manufacturers to interrogate their technologies and claims. And I’ve spent years just living with and using multiple types of water filters, since overall durability, ease and cost of maintenance, and user friendliness are important considerations in something you use multiple times a day.

Filtered water bottles create better-tasting water wherever you go. The kind we tested are aimed at commuters, high school and college students, caretakers, and other people who are always on the move. The bottles are sturdy, attractive, and slip easily into a backpack, purse, briefcase, or messenger bag.

The filters usually work by removing the chlorine disinfectants that give lots of tap water an off flavor. But that’s all most of them do. Most do not protect against other contaminants that may be of concern to you, like lead, PFAS, or bacteria.

The filter bottles we tested (with one exception ) are not meant for hikers and wilderness adventurers. That’s because they aren’t designed to be as small and light as possible, to be compatible with a variety of bottles and storage containers, or to remove disease-causing pathogens from untreated water.

That means they’re also not meant for emergency filtration, such as during a boil-water order following a flood or other natural disasters.

Finally, our testing showed that they’re not practical for children. Most filter bottles require you to suck the water through the filter, and that takes considerable force. Youngsters will have a far easier time using regular bottles filled with water from a filter pitcher or other filtered source.

Frankly, so will adults. Bear that in mind when deciding if you need a filter bottle at all.

We applied the same criteria for filtered water bottles that we do for filter pitchers and dispensers, faucet-mount filters, and under-sink filters: Any claims that bottles remove heavy metals like lead and mercury, industrial compounds like pesticides, and pathogens like bacteria had to be NSF/ANSI certified or tested to NSF/ANSI or similarly stringent standards by accredited independent labs, with the test results publicly shared.

For filter bottles that claim only to make water taste better—which is by far the most common claim—we didn’t require stringent certification, because that’s an extremely simple thing to do. You just run the water through an activated-carbon filter, which are cheap and widely produced.

We did limit our search to filter bottles from well-known brands that have a history in the filtration sector. Numerous filter bottles are now available from small, little-known companies, and though many of them likely perform just fine, we place a lot of emphasis on accountability and an established record in an area as central to well-being as clean drinking water.

We eliminated bottles with pour-through filters, where you fill an upper reservoir and wait for the water to drip through the filter via gravity. They’re slow, and they take several fillings of the upper reservoir to create a full bottle of water—the opposite of on-the-go convenience.

Our testing focused on livability and usability factors. Is a bottle comfortable to hold? To drink from? To refill and to clean? Because filter bottles are generally tall and narrow, their interiors are hard to wash by hand, so we gave points to dishwasher-safe models.

We also came to prefer bottles whose mouthpiece is covered by a cap when not in use. Some have exposed flip-up mouthpieces, and though they’re convenient, they can also pick up dirt while jostling around inside a bag.

We filled our test bottles and kept them upside-down for several hours, shaking them vigorously every 30 minutes or so, to check for seepage. A spill inside your bag is annoying at best, and quite expensive if it ruins some electronics.

We assessed if replacement filters are easily available and affordable. Filters have finite lifespans; you’ll need a new one every few months if you use your filter bottle daily.

The BPA-free plastic Brita Premium Filtering Water Bottle is our pick among the filter bottles we tested. It’s sturdy, comes in a variety of colors and sizes , and is NSF/ANSI certified to reduce chlorine (PDF) , which is the main culprit in bad-tasting tap water. (Note that the plastic versions we recommend are not insulated, although some listings online label them as such. The insulated stainless steel versions keep water cold longer.) Here’s what we liked about the Brita bottle:

It’s relatively easy to drink from. The effort required to suck water through the straw-like filter is lower than with some competitors—though it’s still like drinking a thick milkshake through a straw—and the soft, rubbery mouthpiece is a comfortable size and shape.

It can make tap water taste better. The bottle uses a simple activated-carbon filter. It efficiently captures the chlorine compounds that are commonly used to disinfect water supplies, which, to many people, make the water taste bad.

The flip-top cap allows for one-handed drinking. The cap protects the mouthpiece and keeps it clean when you’re not using it. You just press a button, and the cap pops open to let you take a drink. We preferred its convenience to bottles with twist-off caps, which require two hands and can be dropped or lost. And we preferred both of these designs to bottles with flip-up spouts, which aren’t protected by a cap and can pick up dirt inside a bag or purse.

We didn’t experience any leaks. To test for leaks, we filled all of our contenders then placed them upside down for several hours, giving them a vigorous shake every half hour. The Brita bottle didn’t leak a drop (and neither did any of the other bottles).

The plastic parts are dishwasher safe. Like any reusable bottle, the Brita bottle should be cleaned regularly. To clean yours in the dishwasher, remove the filter from its housing and then place the housing and all other parts on the top rack. (Brita said the stainless versions should be hand-washed.)

Replacement filters are inexpensive. The replacement filters (model BB06) cost less than $3 apiece. They’re rated to last for 40 gallons or two months.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

This is a flaw of the category, not the Brita bottle specifically, but it bears emphasizing: Filter bottles are harder to drink from and fussier to refill than plain reusable bottles. It takes real effort to suck water through the filter. The straws drip when you pull them out to refill the bottle, and they’re just one more thing you have to clean and maintain.

If you have a convenient source of filtered water available—from an office water cooler, say, or a pitcher or under-sink filter at home—you’ll probably be happier with a versatile reusable bottle such as the ones we recommend .

The carry handle on the Brita bottle is attached to the flip-up cap. That puts the weight of the entire bottle on the small plastic latch that keeps the cap closed. Using the handle to pick up the bottle shouldn’t stress the latch too much, but we would not recommend carrying the bottle by the handle, hanging it from a carabiner while walking around, or pulling the bottle out of an overstuffed bag by yanking on it.

If you’d like a filter bottle that both makes treated water taste better (by removing chlorine) and also removes bacteria and protozoa (like Giardia ) that can be present in untreated water, we recommend the BPA-free plastic LifeStraw Go Series bottle . It comes in multiple colors and two sizes (22 and 34 ounces), and an insulated stainless steel version is available in 24 and 34 ounces.

All of LifeStraw’s bottles use a dual filter, with an activated carbon element to reduce chlorine and a hollow fiber membrane filter that physically blocks waterborne bacteria, protozoa, and other particles above 0.2 microns in diameter, including microplastics. (It does not capture viruses, which are smaller still.) You can read LifeStraw’s in-house and independent test results here (PDF) .

The hollow fiber membrane filter takes more strength to suck water through than the Brita Premium Filtering Water Bottle’s plain carbon filter, and because pathogens are not present at dangerous levels in properly treated tap water, the Go bottle is overkill for most everyday use. However, if you travel frequently to places where unsanitary tap water is a concern, the Go bottles are more convenient (and stylish) than camping-oriented filters or chlorine tablets.

A screw-on cap protects the bottle’s mouthpiece from dirt when it’s not in use, and it prevented any leaks in our testing. However, it requires two hands to use, and while detached, it can be dropped, lost, or separated from its companion in a dish rack or crowded cabinet.

The carry handle is molded right into the lid, and it’s sturdy enough to stand up to moderately rough trail hiking. Commendably, LifeStraw sells replacement carbon filter elements on their own. They need to be switched out far more frequently (every 26 gallons, or about two months) than the hollow fiber filter , which is good for 1,000 gallons.

The Larq Bottle Flip Top effectively reduces lead and some industrial compounds as well as chlorine, which is unusual for a filter bottle. Larq shares the test results (PDF) publicly, as we require. But it has a pop-up mouthpiece that’s always exposed to dirt and other schmutz. And the filter—which is necessarily denser in order to be more capable—takes more strength to suck water through than our top pick from Brita. Replacement filters are also expensive at about $15 to $20 every two months. A regular bottle filled from a filtered water source is a better option if you want extensive purification.

The Phillips GoZero Filtration Bottle is similar to our pick, the Brita Premium Filtering Water Bottle, in form and functionality, but its mouthpiece is shorter and harder to grip between your lips, so it’s more difficult to suck from.

The cleverly designed Grayl 24oz GeoPress Purifier is intended for camping and adventure travel, and we tested it largely to see if it might be a surprise winner for urban and suburban adventures, too. We found that it isn’t: Its plunger action, in which you fill the container and then force the filter through the water, requires a lot of strength and a location where you wouldn’t mind a few splashes. It would be a conversation starter in an office or classroom, but it belongs in the great outdoors.

Insulated water bottles are an essential gear item for summer — that much is obvious. But they also have lots of great uses throughout the year. Check out the best insulated bottles of 2024 here.

If you’re looking to purchase a water bottle for outdoor adventures, an insulated bottle should be high on your list. Insulated bottles are designed to keep cold liquids colder longer (and hot liquids hotter) and are usually higher quality and more durable than their plastic counterparts.

Plus, having a reusable water bottle is great for the environment. For this review, we looked at water bottles that have some form of insulation (whether stainless steel construction or otherwise) and a good-sealing cap or lid. And we evaluated each on factors like insulation, shape and volume, durability, and price. All told, we’ve sourced, filled, and drained more than 40 different water bottles since 2021, and pulled together the top 15 in our line-up today.

These bottles didn’t get off easy, either. Each vessel underwent our in-house testing regimen, which saw them all examined for timed ice retention, a leak test, as well as a quasi-scientific taste test. Safe to say, these bottles have been vetted, and to choose the best of the best, we ranked each bottle on features, feedback from our testing, and price.

Sometimes you don’t want to mess with the OG. Hydro Flask’s Wide Mouth ($50) won out as the best insulated bottle, with a massive following both in the GearJunkie offices, as well as with adventurers abroad. There may only be so many ways to craft an insulated bottle today, but Hydro Flask hits the nail on the head with this one.

Astute observers will note that our top spot has long been occupied by Hydro Flask’s Standard Mouth offering, but all tides change eventually, and after consistent testing side by side, we now lean on our Wide Mouth bottle more to slake our thirst on a hot summer’s day. The wide mouth also better accommodates loading ice cubes in the bottle, keeping it ice cold for longer.

No matter the model, the brand’s double-wall vacuum insulation and pro-grade stainless steel construction are designed to maintain drink temperatures for hours without altering taste — an impressive 24 hours of cold and 12 hours of heat retention.

And we found during testing that this bottle is pretty durable as well, thanks to its powder-coated exterior. We will note that even the best has a limit, and dropping the Wide Mouth bottle from a good height is liable to lead to some dings.

Our testers raved about this bottle for its great insulation and lineup of more than 12 fun colors. Also, being on the skinnier side, it fits in most cup holders and pack pockets. While it also comes in 20-, 24- and 32-ounce sizes, we like the 40-ounce best for most activities. The Hydro Flask Wide Mouth is easily the bottle we reach for the most often as we head out the door.

RTIC Vacuum Insulated Bottle

RTIC is a well-respected player in the cooler and drinkware market for offering high-quality, durable products at a more reasonable price than some of the other big brands. Their Vacuum Insulated Bottle ($20 for the 32-ounce size) hits the mark for simple quality at an unbeatable price.

The RTIC Bottle shares many similarities with comparable models from Hydro Flask and YETI, like stainless steel construction, double-wall vacuum insulation, and a powder-coated protective finish. We’re also big fans of the flip-top lid that lets you drink from the bottle without removing the entire lid. In our years of hydrating at home, at the office, in the car, or out in nature, we can’t tell you how many spills we’ve had with other bottles from accidentally leaving the lid partially open. It’s still possible to leak a little out of the flip-top lid, but you won’t be drenching yourself like you would with a completely open bottle.

While the RTIC Bottle looks and performs similarly to the Hydro Flask and YETI models, it doesn’t feel quite as heavy-duty and indestructible. Having said that, we haven’t experienced any quality or durability issues in our testing. Also remember that you can buy two RTIC Bottles for the same price of one of the others, which is why it earns our pick as the best value option.

YETI Rambler Chug Water Bottle

YETI’s 26-ounce Rambler Bottle ($40) is another amazing insulated bottle. This one is tied with our top choice for its stainless steel construction and insulating performance, however, it weighs slightly more — although that also gives it points for durability.

Available in an impressive five different volumes, there’s bound to be a Rambler bottle for any sized adventure you might be planning. The bottle comes standard with YETI’s Chug Cap, which is about the only controversial feedback among testers — some loved the two-part narrow mouth cap, and some didn’t.

A final note — one of the best parts of buying from an established brand like YETI is the broad range of supplementing accessories available. We counted five different lid styles available for the Rambler , which makes it a super versatile bottle to match whatever hydration needs you might have.

Of all of the insulated bottles we’ve tested over the years, offerings like the Rambler consistently held up better than their counterparts, making this bottle one tough option for those who leave the kid gloves at home.

YETI Rambler Colster

When the heat of the summer comes on, water isn’t the only thing we’re looking to slake our thirsts. Your favorite foam can koozie may get all the laughs, but a true insulating can cooler like the YETI Rambler Colster ($25) will keep your favorite beverage chilled for far longer. We found the Colster to be the best of the bunch, with a simple design that just plain works on a long day outside.

Made of the same double-wall stainless steel construction as the rest of YETI’s insulated offerings, the Colster retains the same high performance in a smaller package. And by utilizing a simple lock ring design, this can cooler will holster any 12-ounce can with ease, though it won’t accommodate the other can styles made today.

Luckily, YETI makes the Colster in additional 12-ounce Slim Can , and 16-ounce Tall Can versions. We did find the Colster a bit hefty for what it is but chalked it up to being necessary for adequate insulation.

For those who like to sip a little slower (or have trouble remembering which can they were drinking from), the Colster is the perfect companion to your next six-pack.

MiiR Growler

One of the things that bedevil many insulated bottles is carbonated beverages — but not the 64-ounce MiiR Growler ($60). This insulated brewtainer keeps your favorite IPA locked down, thanks to an innovative threadless lid and locking clasp that seals in freshness and carbonation.

MiiR considered all the niceties as well, incorporating a lid that locks into place in the open position so as to not impede a good pour. The Growler holds an impressive 4 pints of liquid and keeps them chilled for a long time. We will note the rubber seal that’s used can hold onto the scent of whatever is stored last, but this can be removed and washed separately.

One of the things that sets MiiR apart from other manufacturers is the company’s ingrained global philanthropy, funded by a portion of the sales of every product. To date, MiiR has donated $3.75 million to various nonprofits, ranging from sustainable food systems to land and water protections. You can feel good knowing your Growler is doing something positive for the world.

Excellent for bringing the party with you (and keeping it chill), the MiiR Growler makes the cut for anyone looking to transport their brews and enjoy them too.

Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler

At larger volumes, many insulated water bottles won’t fit in a car cup holder. The Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler ($45) solves this problem with a tapered bottom designed for cup holder compatibility, even in the 40-ounce size. Fill up this tumbler before your next road trip, and you’ll stay hydrated for the long haul. 

The 3-position lid features a reusable straw for sipping and a wider mouth opening for chugging. We especially liked using the straw while driving; it makes it easy to keep your eyes on the road while enjoying your beverage. It’s worth noting that the rotating mechanism on the lid does not seal, and this lid is not leakproof. If you are looking for a bottle to throw in your bag while on the go, this tumbler is not the ideal choice.

We recently brought the Stanley Quencher on a drive into the mountains for an overnight backpacking trip. Drinking water is important before big days in the mountains, and we hit the trail feeling well-hydrated. We left the tumbler half full in the car overnight, and we were pleasantly surprised to enjoy cool water after the trip, even though the car was sitting in the sun when we returned. 

While we wouldn’t recommend this for hiking or backpacking, the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler is our new favorite road trip companion.

Thermos Funtainer Bottle With Straw

A fun and trusty water bottle is a great way to encourage your kids to stay hydrated. The 12-ounce Thermos Funtainer ($20) from Thermos is a durable, safe, and affordable bottle designed for kids of all ages. Plus, it comes with a built-in straw.

This compact and packable bottle comes in all sorts of kid-friendly colors and patterns. Though the capacity is a fairly small 12 ounces, it’s the perfect size for small hands. This bottle fits easily into most school bags and lunch boxes.

Made from BPA-free stainless steel, this bottle is both lightweight and thoroughly durable. The click-shut lid is easy to open and quite leakproof when properly closed (which was our only complaint). When tucked away with the lid closed, the Funtainer keeps liquids cold and refreshing for a full 12 hours.

Right at home in any lunch pail, the Thermos Funtainer keeps tykes hydrated all day long.

Igloo Sport Sipper Bottle

Going budget doesn’t have to mean scraping the bottom of the barrel, and the Igloo Sport Sipper Bottle ($20) is proof positive of that. The brand has been getting coolers right for 75 years running, so it’s unsurprising that its foray into insulated bottles has produced a winner.

Built with a reliable stainless steel double wall construction, the Sport Sipper claims cold retention of up to 24 hours, and up to 6 hours with hot beverages — numbers that we were able to confirm in our own testing. Not too shabby for a cool $20 out of your pocket.

With a mostly round exterior profile, the Sport Sipper bottles also feature a flattened edge for your thumb along the front of the bottle. Not only does this give you some gripping power, but it also lines up the straw for quick access. Smart.

Flipping up the straw is a snap, and the rubberized bottom helps keep the important side down. The bail-style handle, while handy, was a bit floppy in our usage (and despite our best fixer efforts, no tightening of the hex screws would alleviate it). No deal breaker in our opinion, just something to keep in mind when toting the bottle around.

For less than you might spend on lunch, the Igloo Sport Sipper slides in as an affordable way to keep your beverages cool this summer.

Owala FreeSip Vacuum Water Bottle

When it comes to insulated water bottles, it’s tough to imagine anything new under the sun. But with a spout design that impressed us right out of the gate, the Owala FreeSip ($33) proves that there’s still innovation to be done.

While many other bottles have interchangeable lids that offer different means of drinking, the FreeSip spout is a bit of a hybrid, combining both a straw and open-mouth neck. You have the choice of either sipping or chugging. The whole affair is protected by a stout flip-top lid, and in testing, we came to really enjoy drinking from this bottle.

Backed up with a triple-layer vacuum construction, the Owala FreeSip has all the tech to do what insulated water bottles do best, and we had no problem keeping our water cool all day. Our only slight arose with the carry loop, which has a detent (or catch) for locking it down in the closed position, but not in the up.

Other than that small flaw, it’s perfect for drinking on the go. The FreeSip is high on our list of best water bottles on the market today.

Hydro Flask Insulated Sports Bottle

A “sports bottle” might seem like an out-of-place inclusion in a roundup of Best Insulated Bottles, since on its face it’s an entirely different class. But Hydro Flask bucked that logic when it designed the insulated, double-wall stainless steel Sport Bottle ($40). It bears a striking similarity to the brand’s hallmark products, with a twist — or rather, a grip.

This 20-ounce, wide-mouth bottle has an ergonomic girdle that’s perfect for grabbing and holding while biking, running, walking, or even standing still. But that groove belies the real function of the Sport Bottle; while your instincts will tell you to squeeze the bottle, that’s not how it works.

A pop-spout sport cap, similar to a standard bike bottle, dispenses liquid with the help of a pinhole air valve. When upturned, water dribbles out mechanically. It’s not a gush, but it’s not painstakingly slow either.

It can be a little counterintuitive if you’re accustomed to squeeze bottles. And while you can suck to increase flow rate, you need to allow air to refill into the bottle to keep drinking. In other words, it’s not the fastest or most explosive bottle out there.

But it has all of Hydro Flask’s quintessential style and thermal performance, in an ergonomic, trendy design. Best of all, the Sport Bottle is compatible with any wide-mouth Hydro Flask lid, and likewise, the sport cap is backward-compatible with any previous wide-mouth bottle. So mix and match to your liking!

Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Water Bottle

Borrowing from the company’s successes in the realm of thermoses , Stanley has produced a great insulated bottle with the IceFlow Flip Straw Water Bottle ($32). We don’t have too many straw-drinking lids in our review, but this bottle executed it perfectly.

The contoured bottle shape fits well in our hands, and the oversized bail on top meant we weren’t scrambling to keep a hold of it. Because it’s a straw bottle, you’re limited to only using cold liquids in it. Our biggest complaint, however, was the rubber seal is particularly deep inside the lid and not ideal for washing.

With a good pedigree, the IceFlow bottle comes from a long line of keeping hot things hot and cold things cold and is the perfect fit for walking and drinking on the go.

Hydro Flask Lightweight Wide Mouth

Hydro Flask’s new Lightweight Trail Series bottles have r eally won us over . If it weren’t for the price, this bottle might be in our top three.

The Lightweight Wide Mouth ($50) weighs just 11 ounces, has a perforated strap to keep weight down, and is designed to work with most backcountry water filters. Hydro Flask did some metal wizardry on this bottle, giving it tapered walls that are thicker on the bottom for durability, and thinner on top for weight savings.

Compared to the Wide Mouth Hydro Flask , we did note some diminished ability to keep drinks cold for as long, but the difference is small. When you’re counting ounces, the Lightweight Wide Mouth comes in clutch.

Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide With Twist Cap

This Klean Kanteen bottle ($45) has a wide mouth, is vacuum-insulated, and holds 32 ounces of your drink of choice. It’s more expensive than others on this list but has everything you need: a cap and fold-down carry handle, a stainless steel interior, and insulation to keep liquids hot for 24 hours and iced for an incredible 83!

We were especially impressed with the thought put into the lid design. Using what Kleen Kanteen calls its TK Closure, the internal threads of the bottle are more like rows of bumps, meaning fewer nooks and crannies to clean. The lid is also fully vacuum insulated and sports a stainless steel bottom, meaning your water only sees steel on the inside of this bottle.

Some testers commented they didn’t like the ergonomics of the lid. We noted that it’s slightly narrower and shorter than other wide-mouths on this list. But if that’s no bother to you, the Kleen Kanteen TKWide bottle could be for you.

Purist Mover Bottle

Purist uses a glass interior coating to combat the odors and flavors some don’t like in their stainless steel bottles. Meanwhile, the exterior sports the tried-and-true stainless steel construction for durability. The brand’s medium size, the Mover 18-ounce bottle ($50), has a convenient sipping cap.

We also liked testing the 32-ounce, wide-mouth size (same insulation and materials, just holds more), although the 18-ounce fits much better in cupholders, packs, and bags. We like the muted colors and professional aesthetic of this brand.

Unfortunately, we did find the Purist Mover Bottle to be a bit lacking when it came to scratch prevention. With no powder coat finish, scratches showed up easily in the painted finish. For the price, this was a bit disappointing. For those who place taste above all else, however, the Mover bottle makes no exceptions.

CamelBak MultiBev Water Bottle

This is by no means a bottle you’ll want to take backpacking, but it’s a really cool design. CamelBak designed the MultiBe v ($50) for just what it sounds like — multiple beverages on the go. This bottle separates into both an insulated bottle, and a cup.

It’s great to fill up with water or coffee at the start of your day, and then have a reusable and insulated option for other drinks later. The incorporated cup is also great for sharing, and both components hold the cold and hot temps well.

How We Tested Insulated Water Bottles

Long a holdout to the niceties of an insulated bottle, GearJunkie Senior Editor Nick Belcaster finally came around to the wonders of insulated water bottles after being gifted a Hydro Flask. It turns out that having ice-cold water hours after leaving the house is worth it.

When you work and play in extreme environments, the benefits of keeping hot water hot and cold water cold start to click. Contributor Katie Griffith originally sought an insulated bottle so she could sip on a liter of hot chocolate during an ice climbing trip. Now she packs her Hydro Flask every day for work as a rock climbing guide in Joshua Tree and savors each gulp of cold water in the desert heat. 

Many in the GearJunkie offices enjoy bringing an insulated bottle to work, and we tapped into this collective knowledge to assemble our list of bottles. We then put them through the wringer and pulled together the best of the best insulated bottles you see here.

We started our foray into the world of insulated water bottles in 2021 with a slate of 14 bottles, aiming to cut through the noise and distill down a huge market into a handful of the best insulated water bottles available. In order to test our slate of insulated bottles, we subjected them to common-place use, such as on hot day hikes, bike commuting, or airline travel. We paid close attention to how long each bottle held onto chilled water as well as important issues such as leaking or denting.

In 2023, we expanded our horizons when Nick looked afar for the best bottles for more special circumstances, and tested models to include the best options for insulated growlers, can coolers, and self-cleaning water bottles. 

At the end of 2023, we tweaked our choices again, pivoting some of our award winners to newly updated standard bearers, and added significantly to our Buyer’s Guide to really dig deep into subjects such as volume, materials, and styles.

Style of Insulated Bottle

Insulated bottles come in many shapes and sizes. Some closely resemble other plastic sports bottles with spill-proof, screw-top lids. The best overall bottle, Hydro Flask’s Wide Mouth , falls into this category. These are often the most versatile option and may replace your Nalgene when weight isn’t a big factor. 

Beyond the standard water bottle, this list also includes tumblers, can coolers, and growlers. A tumbler more closely resembles a cup with a lid than a water bottle. The Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler is great for all-day hydration, but the lid is not spill-proof. You can’t pack it in a backpack like other water bottles. 

Other styles are even more specialized, like the MiiR Growler . This insulated container is designed specifically for storing carbonated beverages like beer or kombucha. The lid functions to seal in carbonation and freshness; you wouldn’t need this for your daily beverages. The YETI Rambler Colster is also not designed for direct drinking; this insulated can cooler slides around your bubbly water or beer to keep it chilled. 

Pick a water bottle with enough volume for all your activities. If you really love one particular insulated bottle, consider getting two sizes — one for daily use and one with more volume for longer trips or travel. (Also consider if the bottle you’ve chosen will work with a water filter or in your pack pocket if you know you’ll be taking it with you on the trail.) If you spend a lot of time driving, note that after a certain volume, fitting into most cup holders isn’t going to happen.

Most bottles we tested are available in volumes from around 12 to 64 ounces. A 12 or 16-ounce bottle is ideal for morning coffee or tea, while you’ll likely want a 24- or 32-ounce bottle to stay hydrated. For all-day, outdoor activities, bringing at least two liters of water is typically recommended, which would translate to about 64 ounces of capacity. We find that two 32-ounce bottles fit easier in a backpack than one 64-ounce vessel. 

Make sure the bottle you choose lists how long it keeps water (or other liquids) cold. The standard is 24 hours, but we’ve noticed in many of these bottles the contents will stay colder for longer . You’ll want to know how good the insulation is, especially if you live in a hotter climate.

What are the interior and exterior materials? Most insulated bottles use some form of stainless steel double-wall insulation, but not all, like the triple-wall build of the Owala FreeSip . Also, look at the exterior material: Is there a powder coating? Does it reduce condensation? Is there a rubber grip or protective design on the base?

Once you find a bottle you think will work for you, pick out a fun color while you’re at it! Colors are mainly just a preference but can also help identify your bottle in a crowd.

Temperature Retention

One of the most important aspects of an insulated bottle, temperature retention is how well it keeps the hot things hot and the cold things cold. The majority of insulated bottles will use some type of vacuum insulation to achieve this. 

Heat energy needs mass to travel through, so by removing the air in between the two layers of the bottle, the liquid inside is able to retain its temperature for longer. We’ve found that most bottles are able to keep hot liquids hot for around 12 hours and cold liquids cold for about 24.

An insulated water bottle is basically a thermos with different design features. Most thermoses are also built with vacuum insulation, but they typically come with a lid designed for pouring hot liquid and a cap that doubles as a small cup for sipping tea or coffee. 

Lids on thermoses can also be more effective at keeping liquids hot or cold. The lids on insulated water bottles focus on hydration, with straws like the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler or open tops like the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth . 

Don’t get us wrong; the insulated bottles we tested are still great at temperature retention. We filled the Stanley Quencher halfway with half-inch ice cubes and no water. After 24 hours in a 65-70 degree room, we found some water, but most of the ice cubes had shrunk only 50%.

Metal bottles can sometimes impart a metallic taste to water, often after being left for a long period of time. Bottles like the Purist Mover implement a silicon dioxide coating on the interior of the bottom to create a glass-like barrier. This can greatly reduce the metal taste that is imparted to water.

Keeping insulated bottles clean is also important to limit any off-tastes. Pay attention to how easy the bottle might be to clean. Look at the threads on the lid as well as how easy it is to remove any gaskets for cleaning. Many bottles are marked as dishwasher safe on the top rack but not all.

A quick tip for cleaning your insulated bottle: Mix two to three tablespoons of baking soda and warm water and shake inside your bottle. Let sit for a few hours and then rinse out with water.

Lids & Handles

A bad lid can ruin an insulated bottle. Manufacturers understand consumers have many uses for their bottles and produce a number of different lids to fit them. The most basic will be a simple screw cap, but there are also lids that incorporate straws, flip closures, and even magnets.

Lids will also have a good bit to do with the mouth style of the bottle. Narrow-mouth bottles can make sipping directly from the bottle nice and easy but will limit your ability to put ice into the bottle. Wide-mouth bottles can accept things like water filters with ease, but without a steady hand, they can lead to some spillage.

Some lids are designed to be leak-proof when closed, and some are not. YETI’s 26-ounce Rambler Bottle , for example, features a secure lid that doesn’t allow spillage when screwed on correctly. The Stanley Quencher is not leak-proof and doesn’t claim to be; what it sacrifices in spillage it makes up for in ease of sipping with the reusable straw. The rotating cover helps reduce leaking but doesn’t prevent it. 

Our tester performed a leak test on the Quencher by adding food coloring to water inside the bottle, screwing it shut, turning it on its side, and timing both types of covers for ten seconds. The Quencher was nearly full during the test. With the rotating cover closed, a small blue puddle formed on a paper towel within a short time. With the straw still in place, a big puddle spilled over a paper towel almost immediately. 

At their most basic, insulated bottles are sleek cylinders, which aren’t the most stable. Having a lid that you can clip a carabiner to can ensure it won’t make an escape. Others will sport a layer of silicone to improve grip or a contoured shape that fits your hand. We found the Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw Water Bottle to be one of the nicest to handle.

Lastly, think hard about your budget. These bottles are an investment but totally worth it, especially if (like us) you spend lots of time outside. And before buying, always check to see if your favorite bottle is on sale.

You can find insulated bottles that won’t break the bank in the $15-25 range like the RTIC Vacuum Insulated Bottle and the Igloo Sport Sipper. Some of our favorites lie in the $30-50 range, including the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth or the YETI Rambler Vacuum Bottle. Though a little spendier, both of these come in larger volumes and feature a coating that improves durability. 

The most specialized bottles come with the highest price tag, including the MiiR Growler, Hydro Flask Lightweight Wide Mouth , and Purist Mover Bottle . All sports technologies that go above and beyond daily hydration needs like holding in carbonation, adding a taste-free liner, or being made from uber-thin materials to cut down weight.

On this list, we have selected the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth 40-ounce bottle as the best overall insulated water bottle. This option provides a useful blend of quality insulation and heavy-duty construction. We also like that it fits easily in most cup holders.

Still, the best-insulated water bottle is the one that meets your needs. If you are looking for a bottle with smaller volume, you may want to go with the 26-ounce YETI Rambler or 32-ounce Owala FreeSip .

All of the bottles on this list will do a great job at keeping your hot liquids hot and your cold liquids cold for impressively long periods. That said, the YETI Rambler Chug Water Bottle performs exceptionally well when filled with hot contents. It’s a lightweight bottle that keeps liquids piping hot and is thoroughly leakproof.

It is important to regularly clean reusable water bottles to prevent the growth of bacteria. Many insulated water bottles are dishwasher safe, and others can be easily cleaned with dish soap and hot water.

On this list, many of the bottles are made from easy-to-clean materials such as stainless steel and linings such as glass or copper. After cleaning, it is a good idea to take the cap off of your bottle and let it fully air dry.

Generally, it is safe to fill insulated water bottles with contents other than water. For coffee and tea, an insulated water bottle can allow you to enjoy a hot drink all through the morning.

However, it is especially important that you clean your bottle thoroughly after filling it with anything other than water. Because of the different shapes of insulated bottles, some are easier to clean than others.

For food like hot soup or oatmeal, you’re going to be better off with a food-specific thermos. These are similar to insulated water bottles, but their short and stout shape makes them easier to use and clean. A good thermos can keep hot food at a safe temperature for hours — an excellent counterpart to an insulated bottle!

Yes, many insulated water bottles are dishwasher-safe. Always double-check the manufacturer’s directions before washing your bottle. If your bottle is not dishwasher-safe, it can be cleaned with hot water, a little dish soap, and a thorough rinsing.

Always check to see what the manufacturer suggests. Many insulated water bottles can be washed in the dishwasher, which is an effective way to thoroughly remove any bacteria that may be present.

If washing by hand, scrub the inside and outside of the bottle with hot water and dish soap. Be sure to fully clean out the threads on both the cap and bottle. After cleaning, let all parts fully air dry.

Thanks to hardy stainless steel or ceramic construction, a good insulated water bottle should last many years — or potentially decades for the careful owner. We’ve all seen those old green Stanley bottles that are three decades old and still going strong.

The biggest threat to insulated water bottles is puncturing. If the double or triple-walled insulation of your bottle is punctured, it will lose its ability to insulate. To prevent this, avoid dropping your bottle onto jagged or hard surfaces. Plastic insulated water bottles are less prone to dents and punctures, but they are generally not as rugged overall.

If an insulated bottle becomes punctured, it will lose its vacuum and be replaced by air molecules. Since there is now matter in between the inner and outer bottles, heat transfer occurs much quicker.

To test if your bottle still has its vacuum sealing: Carefully fill the bottle with boiling water and wait five minutes. Then feel for any hot spots, which would indicate loss of insulation.

King County Sheriff's detectives are asking for the public's help to identify a woman caught on camera smashing a light rail rider in the face with a partially filled sports drink bottle.

SEATTLE - King County Sheriff's detectives are asking for the public's help to identify a woman caught on camera smashing a light rail rider in the face with a partially filled sports drink bottle. 

On Sunday, April 21 around 3:25 pm, the victim was sitting on the Light Rail when the suspect walked by to get off at the Capitol Hill station.  As the train came to a stop, video shows the woman gripping a partially filled Gatorade bottle with both hands and approaching the sitting rider before smashing her in the face.   

The victim appeared stunned but fortunately, sustained only minor injuries. Because of the violent and unprovoked attack on a stranger, detectives are concerned for the safety of the public until the suspect is identified and arrested.

The attacker is described as approximately 5’7" with brown hair. She was last seen wearing a gray full-zip hoodie, black shirt, black pants, white sneakers and had white headphones on.    

Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for any information that leads to her arrest.
