Bono Sing 2 Music for Screens

It’s rare for an author to do a second leg of book tour dates, but U2 have always been about breaking the mold and singer Bono’s tour in support of his “Stories of Surrender” memoir is no exception.

However, all of the dates will be at New York’s Beacon Theatre, starting on April 16, 2023. The dates appear below.

Bono will once again be joined by musicians Gemma Doherty (Harp, Keyboard, Vocals) and Kate Ellis (Cello, Keyboard, Vocals), as well as Musical Director Jacknife Lee for an evening of “words, music and some mischief…”

Popular on Variety

Of the first date at the Beacon, Variety wrote, “Bono’s voice was strong and clear while performing the hits, soaring over the tasteful arrangements on anthems such as “Beautiful Day,” “Where the Streets Have No Name” and “Desire.” But his Irish lilt was humble in storytelling, whether recalling a life-saving heart surgery or recounting his weekly conversations with his father, Bob, in their local Irish pub, which continued well into the band’s success. The banter between the duo was revisited several times throughout the performance, which includes charming run-ins with icons like Princess Diana and Luciano Pavarotti.”

About Bono’s memoir ‘ SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story’

November 1 st  2022 saw the release of Bono’s memoir titled  ‘ SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story’ ,  the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him. The subtitle, ’40 Songs, One Story,’ refers to the book’s 40 chapters, each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created 40 original drawings which will be featured throughout the book. In his unique voice, Bono takes readers from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends, and faith that have sustained, challenged, and shaped him.

Additional information about  SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story   is available at  surrendermemoir.com .

Bono Extends Book Tour with New York City Residency in 2023

by Tina Benitez-Eves December 13, 2022, 11:40 am

Videos by American Songwriter

Returning to the Beacon Theatre, where the tour kicked off in November 2022, the Stories of Surrender residency will start on April 16 and run through May 3 and is centered around the U2 frontman’s memoir.

Centered around stories in his book, the show is one part theatrical performance and the other a rock concert with Bono balancing memories and anecdotes with musical interludes.

For his performances, Bono will be joined by musicians Gemma Doherty on harp, keyboard, and vocals, Kate Ellis on cello, keyboard, and vocals, along with musical director Jacknife Lee.

The book follows the earlier days of the singer, born Paul David Hewson, from growing up in Dublin, the loss of his mother at 14, and finding his future bandmates The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr., and Adam Clayton at school in 1978. Surrender also explores Bono’s philanthropic work and activism linked to helping to fight poverty and combatting AIDS, along with stories of the people who impacted his life.

“When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs, the people, places, and possibilities in my life,” said Bono in an earlier statement in his memoir. ‘Surrender’ is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book.”

He added, “I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. ‘Surrender’ is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress…with a fair amount of fun along the way.”

Bono Announces New York City ‘Stories of Surrender’ Residency

Bono 's Stories of Surrender book tour will continue next spring with an eight-date residency in New York City.

He's returning to the historic Beacon Theatre, where this tour opened  in November. The new residency begins April 16 and continues through May 3. Tickets will be available starting Thursday . You can view a complete list of dates down below.

These performances are centered on the U2 frontman's recently released memoir,  Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story , as Gemma Doherty (harp, keyboard, vocals), Kate Ellis (cello, keyboard, vocals) and musical director Jacknife Lee join Bono for a show that's part theatrical performance and part rock concert. Bono relays snippets from his book in between brief musical interludes, beginning with his childhood in Dublin and stretching through subsequent philanthropic work and some of U2's biggest moments.

"When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I'd previously only sketched in songs – the people, places and possibilities in my life," Bono said in an earlier news release. "It is preposterous to think that others are interested in your story. ... This has all been a bit surreal," Bono added at the November tour opener.

He also noted that it was strange to be performing without his U2 bandmates. "I have their permission," Bono assured fans.

“I miss being on stage and the closeness of U2’s audience,” Bono comments in a statement. “In these shows I’ve got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell… Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, Surrender, which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here”.

Spanning 40 chapters, each named after a U2 song, Bono’s book walks readers through his early days in Ireland, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s journey to the top, and his years-long commitment to good causes.

“When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs. The people, places, and possibilities in my life,” he explains. “Surrender” is “a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book.”

Bono is no stranger to the stage. As a member of U2, the band re-wrote the history books with the 360° Tour which, in 2011, passed the $580 million mark, making it the then-highest-grossing tour in Billboard Boxscore history (Ed Sheeran has since overtake that figure).

The 62-year-old singer has also flirted with writing. In 2007, he was tapped as the first-ever guest editor of Vanity Fair , a year after filling-in for the same role at the U.K.’s Independent .

Bono Announces 14-Date Solo Concert Tour to Promote 'Surrender' Memoir: 'I Miss Being Onstage'

The tour, which kicks off at New York's Beacon Theatre on Nov. 2, coincides with the release of the U2 rocker's new memoir

bono book tour 2023

Bono is going on tour!

Earlier this week, the U2 frontman, 62, announced a series of solo shows in support of his forthcoming memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story , which is due out Nov. 1.

"I miss being onstage and the closeness of U2's audience," Bono said in a press release. "In these shows, I've got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell... Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, Surrender , which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here."

The tour kicks off at New York City's Beacon Theatre on Nov. 2, and Bono will make stops in cities including Chicago and Los Angeles before heading overseas for shows in Europe and wrapping the run in Madrid on Nov. 28.

Published by Alfred A. Knopf, the book — named after a track on U2's 1983 album War — comprises 40 different chapters, each named after a U2 song and featuring original drawings by the Irish rocker.

Surrender chronicles Bono's Dublin childhood, including the loss of his mother at 14, U2's rise to fame, and his activism in the fight against HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty with "candor, self-reflection and humor," according to a press release.

"When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I'd previously only sketched in songs," Bono said in a statement. "The people, places and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me."

He continued at the time, "Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim's lack of progress . . . With a fair amount of fun along the way."

Bono will also narrate an audiobook through Penguin Random House.

In May, an animated video with an excerpt from the chapter titled "Out of Control" was released. The video featured some of the star's drawings which documented the story of Bono writing U2's first single on his 18th birthday in 1978.

Tickets, which will include a copy of the book, are on sale now. More information is available at the Surrender website .

Bono to Sing Stories and Tell Songs on Surrender Book Tour

Portrait of Justin Curto

Bono’s going to sing his songs with or without U2 . The rock star is set to promote his upcoming memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story on an intimate tour this November, and he’ll sing a bit, too. “In these shows I’ve got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell,” Bono said in a statement. “Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, Surrender , which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here.” Hey, no one ever said the man isn’t earnest. The 14-date tour is Bono’s first outing since U2’s 2019 Joshua Tree tour and comes ahead of his band’s return to the stage in 2023. Surrender , Bono’s first book, is out November 1, the day before the tour kicks off in New York City. We’ll hold out hope that he plays all 40 songs then.

Bono will make you sing, laugh and cry at Stories of Surrender limited engagement

bono book tour 2023

NEW YORK – Bono stands alone in a spotlight with no accompaniment, liberating the 19th century Italian song "Torna a Surriento" from his insides.

His voice a beautiful rumble, the frontman for U2 unleashes the pain, glory, sorrow and joy he’s shared the past two hours through story and song.

Leading up to that stunning culmination – an ode to his late father , Brendan Hewson – you’ve felt the bruises on his heart. But with this finale, Bono will take whatever is left of your own heart and break it.

In October, the loquacious singer-writer-activist released his memoir, “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.” A few weeks later, he embarked on a 14-city international tour to present passages from the book threaded with reframed versions of several U2 songs.

Bono at the Beacon Theatre in New York

Now, Bono is back for a spring run, taking place only at the Beacon Theatre in New York, with shows Friday and Saturday as well as seven scattered dates through May 8. Though tickets sold out instantly, production holds have just been released via ticketmaster.com for the May 4, 7 and 8 shows.

At the first of his return dates on Sunday, Bono joked about his U2 comrades continuing to indulge this solo detour. “I told the band it was one night only,” he said with a mischievous grin.

A relaxed storyteller with a flair for theatrical flourishes – he did lead U2 through tours adorned with space stations and massive mirror ball lemons, after all – Bono also proved a sincere, reflective host.

And, of course, a commanding singer.

Bono gets a musical boost even without U2

Backed only by musicians Gemma Doherty (harp, keyboard, vocals), Kate Ellis (cello, keyboard, vocals) and producer Jacknife Lee (musical director, electronic percussion), Bono studded the show with 17 U2 songs, opening with the band’s love letter to New York, “City of Blinding Lights” (“Lucky we, lucky me,” he improvised at the end of the gliding anthem).

The selections from U2’s 40-plus-year catalog correlated to a story shared from the book:

  • “With Or Without You” was woven into the origin tale of meeting wife Ali (who was present at Sunday’s show) the same week as U2 bandmates Larry Mullen Jr., Adam Clayton and the Edge .
  • “Out of Control,” the first song Bono said he wrote after being musically schooled by The Ramones (his saviors after the death of his mother, Iris, when he was 14).
  • “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” an Edge creation so defiant on record that Bono turned haunting and hushed.
  • “Beautiful Day,” shared after the tender recounting of the last moments with his father, his “Da,” in 2001.

Through them all, Bono’s voice soared with few accoutrements, the elegant stringed instruments and electronic pulse an undercurrent, but not the drivers of these malleable classics.

The production is magical, intimate and unforgettable. And best of all, these shows come with a no-devices-allowed mandate (phones will be stored in Yondr bags on the way in), allowing fans to commit special moments to memory, uninterrupted by filming, texting and views impeded by self-involved boors.

What does Bono talk about in his Surrender shows?

In his black outfit, pinstriped vest and trademark shaded glasses, Bono alternately stalked the stage, sipped from a pint of Guinness, pointed at his sketches illuminated on the screens behind him, and sat in a chair to recount conversations between himself and his father.

The topic of Luciano Pavarotti – a favorite of his Da, a tenor singer with a love of classical music – ran throughout the show. Bono frequently imparted how his father could never understand why a legendary opera singer would want to work with his son (Bono and the Edge performed at the 1995 Pavarotti & Friends concert).

Bono can captivate with a soliloquy about air (the story of the heart defect that almost killed him in 2016), prompt easy laughter with the recollection of his Da – no fan of the royal family – being immediately disarmed when meeting Princess Diana ("800 years of oppression, forgotten about in eight seconds," Bono quipped), and break into amusingly accurate impersonations of his bandmates and former President Bill Clinton (Bono worked with many a politician in philanthropic efforts such as the One Campaign).

Bono is both professor and maestro of this production, handling both roles with skillful ease.

What is next for U2?

It’s already been a visible several months for U2. The band received a Kennedy Center Honor in December, while “Songs of Surrender,” their collection of 40 rerecorded catalog gems arrived in March, as did a Disney+ documentary spotlighting Bono, the Edge, David Letterman and Dublin.

In September, the band will open the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas (sans Mullen Jr., who is sidelined by recovery from surgery) with a high-tech extravaganza dubbed U2: UV Achtung Baby Live at the Sphere (dates will be announced soon).

No doubt, the enduring success of U2 can be attributed to their close-knit democracy and brotherhood. As Bono underscores in his show, “It turns out maybe you can change the world and have fun”– a credo both he and U2 have turned into an art.

Bono Adds Dates to ‘Stories of Surrender’ New York Residency

bono book tour 2023

Tickets for the additional shows of “Stories of Surrender” at the Beacon go on sale starting on Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. and will be available here . Each ticket purchased comes with a copy of the book. All tickets purchased online will be delivered as secure mobile tickets. There will again be a four-ticket limit per person. The tour is tagged, “An evening of words, music and some mischief…” Bono will once again be joined by musicians Gemma Doherty (Harp, Keyboard, Vocals) and Kate Ellis (Cello, Keyboard, Vocals), as well as Musical Director Jacknife Lee.

“I miss being on stage and the closeness of U2’s audience,” said Bono in the original Oct. 3 announcement of the November tour. “In these shows I’ve got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell… Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, SURRENDER, which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here.”

From the publisher’s original book announcement: As one of the music world’s most iconic artists, Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender , it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends, and faith that have sustained, challenged, and shaped him.

bono book tour 2023

Surrender ’s subtitle, “40 Songs, One Story,” is a nod to the book’s forty chapters, each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created forty original drawings for the book, and an animated video, narrated by Bono and based on some of his drawings, has been released. The video illustrates an extract from Surrender ’s “Out of Control” chapter, in which Bono tells the story of writing U2’s first single on May 10, 1978 – his eighteenth birthday, 44 years ago. Watch it below.

In the announcement, Knopf publisher Reagan Arthur said, “Seven years ago, the late Knopf editor Sonny Mehta, acquired the book, because he knew Bono fits into the tradition of literary Irish storytellers, and we were lucky to have Sonny’s notes on an early draft of the manuscript. We’re luckier still that Bono not only has a dramatic personal history to tell, but he’s also a truly gifted writer.”

Says Bono, “When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs. The people, places, and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress . . . With a fair amount of fun along the way.”

Bono “Stories of Surrender” Book Tour (Tickets are available here ) Apr 16-17 – New York, NY – Beacon Theatre Apr 21-22 – New York, NY – Beacon Theatre Apr 26 – New York, NY – Beacon Theatre Apr 28-29 – New York, NY – Beacon Theatre May 3-4 – New York, NY – Beacon Theatre May 7-8 – New York, NY – Beacon Theatre

(May 4, 7 and 8 performances added on Jan. 5.)

Bono appeared on  Good Morning America to promote the book.

Bono was born Paul David Hewson in Dublin. He met The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr., and Adam Clayton at school, and in 1978 U2 was formed. The band released their first album, Boy , on Island Records in 1980 and to date have released fourteen studio albums that have sold over 150 million copies worldwide. The band’s record-breaking 360° Tour (2009–2011) remains the highest-grossing concert band tour of all time. U2 have won numerous awards, including twenty-two Grammys, more than any other duo or group, as well as the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award. In 2005, U2 was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They were awarded Kennedy Center Honors in 2022.

Alongside his role in U2, Bono is a groundbreaking activist. He cofounded sister organizations ONE and (RED). ONE is a movement of millions of people dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease. With ONE, Bono has lobbied heads of state and legislatures all around the world, helping to ensure the passage of programs that have helped to save tens of millions of lives over the past twenty years. (RED)—which partners with companies to raise public awareness about, and corporate contributions for, the AIDS crisis—has to date generated more than $700 million for the Global Fund to treat and prevent AIDS in Africa.

Bono has received a number of awards for his music and activism, including the Freedom of the City of Dublin (with U2), Chile’s Pablo Neruda Medal of Honor, the Légion d’honneur from the French government, an honorary British knighthood, the Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, and TIME magazine’s Person of the Year (along with Bill and Melinda Gates). He lives in Dublin with his wife, Ali Hewson.
