Bringing your vehicle on the ferry to Ponza is not possible. Also, keep in mind that the circulation of cars is prohibited for non-residents during the summer.

Ferry luggage

Each ferry company operating on this route has different luggage allowance policies :

• On the hydrofoils of Laziomar , a maximum of 35x20x20 cm of luggage is allowed per passenger.
• With Vetor , each passenger can bring 1 piece of luggage with maximum dimensions of 50x30x15 cm .

Important : for luggage exceeding the above policies, an additional fee is applied.

There are no cabins on the Anzio - Ponza ferries, as the route is rather short and is operated by hydrofoils. However,  onboard seating is included in the ferry ticket price.

You can safely travel with your pet on the ferry to Ponza by booking pet tickets and following the policies of each company:

• With Laziomar , only animals of small size are allowed, preferably in a carrier or held by their owner.
• With Vetor , animals are only allowed on the deck.

In both cases, owners must carry all necessary  pet documents and certificates with them, while dogs need to be muzzled and on a leash.

Important : keep in mind that guide dogs travel for free.

We meet front of Caffè Cestia in Piazza di Porta San Paolo 1. Please note that above the bar the sign says “BAR PIRAMIDE” and not Caffè Cestia. The caffè is located to the left of OTTICA PIRAMIDE. Look for our representative wearing the color bright green and carrying a flag with the EcoArt logo.The cafè is open in the early mornings. The closest metro stop is the Line B - Piramide station.

It was a very good trip The meetingpoint was easy to find the guides were there early It is a bit a long way to Ponza but when you arrive it is worth it You go on a nice boat and you go around the island and make several stops You can swim and the guide Gina tells you nice things about the island The only thing we would like more if we had also a little bit time at the beach Overall very nice and we enjoyed our day a lot

Our boat excursion covers all the most iconic and beautiful locations the islands have to offer, from ancient Roman hand-carved cisterns to naturally formed arches. As we gently cruise the shoreline, we will listen to the story of Domitilla, exiled to the islands in complete solitude and how the islands were repopulated in the 1700s by inhabitants of Ischia near Capri. Several stops will allow you to take a swim in the inviting crystal waters and a hot plate of pasta will be served as your lunch onboard. If you’re lucky enough, a pod of dolphins might pay you a visit!

• Swim suits, beach towels, sun tan lotion, flip flop or sandals, sunglasses and a hat.
• Basic swimming abilities

Ferry to Ponza

Once we arrive at Anzio port you will have plenty of time to grab a Cappucino before the ferry departs at 8,30 am sharp.

Begin Boat Excursion

At Ponza port our excursion boat with crew will be ready for departure at 10,30 am. Your guide will be with you at all times.

Ponza Island

Boat excursion.

Our boat excursion will take you to the most breath taking locations of Ponza and Palmarola. Hear the stories of our captain as you bathe in the sun. Our excursion will stop several times to allow you to take a swim in the inviting waters.

Palmarola Island

Lunch break.

There will be a brief stop at the lovely island of Palmarola as the crew will prepare your pasta lunch.

Visit the Cale

Our boat excursion continues as we head back to Ponza. Here we will bring you to the various coves known as “cale” and to a natural arch formation.

Stroll and Shop

Slowly and gently our crew will steer us back to Ponza’s port. Once docked, you will have plenty of time to stroll around the little and quaint shops aligned along side the pier. The ferry back to Anzio departs at 05,30pm.

Transfer back to Rome

Once back at Anzio port, our private van will waiting for you to take you back to Rome at Piramide metro stop. Your guide will gladly give you recommendations, advice and assist you in any way if needed.

If you are looking for a relaxing and scenic day trip from Rome, Anzio Beaches might be the perfect destination for you. Getting There

By public transport.

The easiest way to get to Anzio from Rome by public transport is by train. You can take the regional train to Nettuno from Termini station, which runs every 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the season. The ticket costs 3.40 euros and you can buy it online or at the station. You need to get off at Anzio station, which is the second to last stop. From there, you can walk downhill to the main square and the beach in less than five minutes.

If you prefer to drive to Anzio from Rome, you can take the A90 ring road and then exit at Via Pontina (SS148). Follow this road for about 50 km until you reach Anzio. The driving time is about one hour, but it can vary depending on the traffic. You can find parking options near the beach or the marina, but they might be crowded during peak season.

• Enjoy the beach: Anzio has a long coastline with a blue flag beach that offers clear waters, golden sands, and plenty of services. You can rent a sunbed and an umbrella, or find a free spot on the shore. You can also swim, sunbathe, or play beach games.

Visiting Anzio, an easy day trip from Rome

One of my goals for 2018 was to make more one day trips from Rome . Even though the best places around Rome can only be seen by car, there are quite a few destinations that can be reached by train . Anzio  in Italy is one of them! I had a beautiful day trip to Anzio from Rome and enjoyed the beach. See my photos below, read my story and discover all the interesting things to do in Anzio.

HOW TO HAVE A DAY TRIP TO ANZIO FROM ROME

Anzio is   51 km. away from Rome and can be reached easily by train from Termini . The tickets are very cheap, less than 5€ and the train goes directly to the city center of Anzio. You can buy the tickets online from Trenitalia  but there is no reason to do that: the train is “ regionale ” which means that the price is fixed. You can just go to Termini, buy your ticket and hop on the first train!

SUNNY DAY IN ROME? GO TO ANZIO’S BEACH

Anzio  in Italy is famous mostly for its beach : it has a blue flag and clear, blue waters . The coastline is quite big, and it has golden sands. Romans love this place, they tend to spend beautiful beach day trips from Rome, and a lot of them have already bought a house here.

If you are visiting Rome in the summer and you are planning to go swimming, you can easily rent a room or an Airbnb for a couple of nights here. If you are thinking of buying a house here, forget it: I took a look, and the prices are incredibly high! With 200k you just get a tiny 2-bedroom flat!

Apart from the beach, you have to know that Anzio is a small port . Or better to say a marina?

It has a lot of boats; you can watch the Italian fisherman bring ashore the fresh fish that will be cooked later at one of the restaurants by the sea .

The second thing you should know is that from Anzio you can get the boat to Ponza, Palmarola and Ventotene islands . If you have never heard of them, don’t worry, they’re some of the most favorite places where wealthy Romans tend to spend their weekends in June and July.

ANZIO’S CEMETERY

Furthermore, here has taken place one of the most famous battles of the 2nd World War. 7000 people lost their lives, and a big proportion of them were American. The American Cemetery is visited often by the relatives of the lost ones.

THINGS TO DO IN ANZIO IN THE WINTER 

But this place is not only being visited for the cemetery or the beach . Locals come all year round to eat fresh fish by the sea. There are so many restaurants in Anzio that serve fresh fish.

It was ok. I just had some pizza, gelato and walked by the beach.

The only negative thing about this trip had to do with cars . A lot of people decided to come with the car, and that resulted in a huge traffic jam in a tiny port. There was smog and noise, and I saw some drivers frustrated, not knowing where to park. I strongly advise you not to drive to Anzio, just take the train!

Conclusion:  I will visit this city again and the city of Nettuno that was very close too. Next time I will plan ahead my day trip to Anzio from Rome and make a reservation in a nice restaurant!

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

Oceania cruise ship rescues 68 migrants from stalled fishing boat, 6 dead

MADRID - A luxury cruise ship  rescued 68 migrants trying to reach the Spanish Canary Islands in a fishing boat that had stalled in rough seas, Spanish authorities and the cruise operator said on Thursday.

Six people died in the incident.

The archipelago has become the main point of entry to Spain for illegal migrants from Africa in recent years and the route is also the deadliest. Migration rights group Walking Borders said last week that nearly 5,000 migrants died at sea on that route during the first five months of 2024.

Bulk carrier Philipp Oldendorff sighted the boat adrift 440 nautical miles (815 km) south of the island of Tenerife on Wednesday and provided first assistance to the migrants, while the Insignia cruise ship was diverted to the area to pick up the survivors, the Spanish Coast Guard said in a statement.

The Insignia, which is owned by Miami-based  Oceania Cruises , also recovered three bodies from the boat. Bad weather prevented the recovery of another two bodies so the ship left a locating device to facilitate the search.

The small luxury cruise ship, which has a capacity of 670 passengers, is undertaking a 180-day trip around the world that started in January.

"Safety of life at sea is of paramount importance for all seafarers," said a spokesperson for Oceania Cruises, which is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

"We can confirm that the Insignia rescued 68 people from a vessel in distress between Cape Verde and Tenerife, brought them onboard for medical assistance and provided food, drinks, clothing and a safe place to rest," the spokesperson added.

A Spanish Coast Guard vessel was en route from the Canary Islands on Thursday to meet the Insignia and then locate the shipwreck.

J.Lo is Living the Under the Tuscan Sun Dream on a Solo Trip to Italy, and I Couldn’t Be Happier for Her

Celebrities respond to relationship rifts in myriad ways, from propagating the term “conscious uncoupling” to smoking cigs with Paul Mescal , but I have to say that I’m particularly fond of Jennifer Lopez’s response to her alleged marital strife with Ben Affleck: refusing to talk about it publicly ( as she should ), canceling her tour , and jetting off to Italy for a solo vacation. Nobody has ever been less bothered!

Obviously, the mere fact of being in Italy doesn’t mean you’re not still Going Through It on a personal level (for evidence, see the last season of The White Lotus , or, more anecdotally, the time I cried so consistently and loudly about a breakup during a trip to Rome in my early 20s that the proprietor of the Airbnb I was staying at quietly reduced the price of my room by half). But personally, I’m beyond thrilled to see J.Lo queening out by the sea in Positano—and all while clutching a Dior handbag, no less. Who says you have to stay in Los Angeles and rot in bed when relationship stuff isn’t going so well? (Granted, Lopez probably has minimal rot time, but I’m sure she has her own hyper-famous version of lying in bed with unwashed hair for a week and watching When Harry Met Sally on repeat.)

Obviously, the easy filmic comparison to invoke in Lopez’s situation is Eat, Pray, Love , but since Lopez’s solo trip doesn’t appear to involve any cringe appropriation of Indonesian spirituality , I’d prefer to liken it to another movie about a woman setting aside her less-than-fun pile of romantic trials and tribulations to enjoy la dolce vita in Italy: Under the Tuscan Sun. No, Lopez doesn’t appear to be accidentally embarking on a gay tour of Tuscany, as Diane Lane does in the movie (which also stars Sandra Oh and Kate Walsh as one of the most iconic onscreen lesbian couples ever), but there’s still time for that, right?
