Yellowstone National Park showcases some of the best and most diverse wildlife in North America. Our full day wildlife safari endeavors to highlight the hundreds of species of animals and birds that thrive in this protected ecosystem. We will visit valleys, river systems, and forests throughout central and northern Yellowstone, a region lovingly referred to as America’s Serengeti. Throughout the Northern Range especially, we will search for predators, like wolves and bears, as they hunt through herds of bison and elk. Each eco tour is led by a professional naturalist who will use high powered optics to find and observe wildlife at a distance as well as show you animal tracks and sign right at your feet.

Our safaris begin in the early morning hours to give us the best opportunity to view wildlife movement.  The tour includes small amounts of driving between great wildlife habitats as well as exploring them on foot. Our private safaris are completely customizable and can even focus on individual species of interest as well as ample time for other passions such as photography. Each day is unique and is filled with exciting encounters, surprises and new experiences.

Our guides will share their knowledge and experience with you as you explore Yellowstone National Park together. Throughout the day they will educate and converse with you about the incredible ecosystem as it is revealed. Yellowstone is special amongst our public lands in that it is home to all notable animal species that were present when European explorers first traveled through this area.  Each season allows for unique focus and special experiences accordingly.

Spring brings new life from every corner of the land. Mother bears traverse meadows with their vivacious cubs or yearlings. Tiny bison calves entertain with furry, orange exuberance. Elk mothers guard their calves as hungry grizzlies attempt to steal one away. Higher elevations are still blanketed with snow, and our safaris concentrate on lower grass-filled meadows and valleys.

Summer brings abundance and dispersal. Life spreads out over all the green fields and forests of Yellowstone as heat rises and days lengthen. Herds of ungulates move into the shade and predators shift to new areas for their somewhat slow and languid season. The often-tepid herds of bison become suddenly and incredibly active, as they court, fight and mate in the wild and violent rut season. Our summer safaris spread out in order to follow wildlife and the events that drive their lives. During July and August, our safaris explore the eastern parts of Yellowstone including Hayden Valley, Pelican Valley, and Dunraven and Sylvan Passes.

Fall brings cooler temperatures and unique wildlife viewing opportunities. The sparse deciduous trees of cottonwood, aspen and willow adopt a striking color change to the delight of photographers. Animals and birds start to prepare for winter. Impressive bull elk bugle to advertise their prowess and attract their harems of females, fighting away competitors in the hours of dawn and dusk. Beavers reinforce their dams against impending ice, and great migrations of geese, waterfowl and raptors move out of the region. Bears gorge on berries before their deep winter sleep, and a calm settles over the National Park in anticipation of winter.

  Wintertime is one of the most special in Northern Yellowstone. Against the backdrop of clean white snow, animals are visible at great distances, and we can take advantage of our high-powered optics to view them up to several miles away. Winter is the time of the wolf, who rules as top predator while bears sleep. The story of Yellowstone National Park’s wolves is front and center for our winter safaris , and we have great success in seeing one, or multiple packs over the course of the day. Other wildlife becomes more visible as well including bighorn sheep, moose, foxes, coyotes and otters. Temperatures may be chilly, but wildlife sightings are hot and the very limited crowds make it one of the best seasons to visit the Park.

Public Safari NORTH

Public safari east, private safari north, private safari east, pickup options.

For open tours, we have two entrance options. If you are staying in Bozeman, Paradise Valley, Gardiner or Mammoth , or are staying at Big Sky and would like to see Lamar Valley, choose the NORTH entrance . This route will begin in Bozeman and include potential wildlife sightings such as elk, deer, moose, pronghorn, bald eagles, and other birds throughout Paradise Valley and the Gardiner Basin before reaching the Northern Gate in Gardiner, MT. The safari then explores 50 miles of Yellowstone’s Northern Range passing through areas such as Blacktail Plateau, Tower Junction, Dunraven Pass, Lamar Valley, and the Northeastern corner of the Park where wildlife such as Grizzly and Black bears, Wolves, Coyotes, Bison, Bighorn Sheep and a variety of other mammals and birds are possible. We will always offer a stop at Mammoth Hot Springs as a final stop at the end of this excursion before returning back the way we came.

For guests staying in Cody, WY or nearby, choose the EAST entrance . This route begins in Cody with a journey through the Shoshone River Canyon where bighorn sheep, deer and eagles are frequently seen, and enters the Park through the East Gate. We then ascend Sylvan Pass with gorgeous views of the Absaroka mountains and amazing alpine wildlife potentials such as goats, pika, deer and bears, before descending to Yellowstone Lake at Fishing Bridge. This eco tour passes through Hayden Valley, enjoys several brief views of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and explores another incredible mountainous region over Dunraven Pass, before venturing out into Lamar Valley with all of its amazing wildlife possibilities from apex predators such as grizzlies and wolves, to vast herds of bison, various small mammals, and wild flocks of birds. The route returns the same way.

For all open tours, you will meet your guide at designated central meeting locations . When you reserve, we will confirm your exact pickup time and location based on the season and proximity to your lodging. We’ve been to Yellowstone many times but never did a "wildlife tour". What a great experience! So much more wildlife we would have missed on our own. Saw grey wolves and their pups - bison of course but also elk, mountain goats and even a great horned owl. Our guide was great! He was very knowledgeable and ensured we had a thoroughly enjoyable day. We will definitely come back!

What kind of wildlife can I see in Yellowstone National Park?

Yellowstone National Park is known for the diversity of wildlife found there. Because it was protected from settler development early on, it has maintained the integrity of a wild landscape, with opportunities to see a variety of species in their natural habitat. You may see bison, elk, wolves, grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, and other large and small mammals as well as avian species, reptiles, amphibians and insects.  It’s all here – a fully functioning ecosystem on display – you just have to know where to look.  A guided tour offers the best opportunities to see wildlife in the National Park.  A professional guide is also able to provide insight and education on animal behavior and give context to what you’re seeing on the landscape.

Are there bears in Yellowstone?

Yellowstone National Park is home two both grizzly bears and black bears.  In fact, it’s one of the only areas south of Canada where you can find grizzly bears and black bears coexisting.  During the summer months they are both active in certain areas of the park and during the winter months, both bear species will hibernate.  Their physical characteristics are quite different, easily identified if you know what to look for.  They exhibit behavioral differences as well.  Your guide will be able to speak to these differences, how their physical and behavioral characteristics are identified and how they interact in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

5 Stars Our tour guide was perfect for the journey we wanted. He was connected with the watchers (especially wolf watchers, which is what we wanted in addition to coyotes, mountain goat, of course bison, bears, and other native species), obviously interested in the wildlife and their lives, connected to what makes his clients happy, caring about the wildlife AND the clients. The BEST part was following a long female wolf near Little America and her adventures among bison, mousing, crossing the road. And then we were with him when a young black bear was too familiar with people and had some kind of injury or disability. I learned a lot, and I could have continued tracking wolves for days. He made sure we understood the key landmarks for watching wolves, bison and mountain goats, which we wanted; took us to the perfect picnic spot; and despite all kinds of opportunities, got us back to our car at the agreed-upon time (though I could have gone on and on). Definitely recommend. And if you don’t really know what you want, he’ll find wildlife for your connection, which I think is what most people want / need. CL B.

5 Stars Booked a day tour for just my husband and myself. We were staying at Old Faithful Inn and were met our guide at Mammoth Springs Lodge. About an hour away due to speed restrictions at 25mph (bison do not pay attention to the green cross code). Our guides met us on time and immediately we both knew that this was going to be a highlight of our trip. They drove us through Lamar Valley explaining the landscape the whole time. Our first sighting was of a grizzly with her cubs in the distance. I would have been happy if that is all we saw. We then saw a bison carcass with a wolf, coyote and a lot of ravens. If there is a large amount of ravens this is usually due to there being a carcass. Took a little detour down Slough Creek which was so beautiful. Driving further on in to the valley our guide spotted a mountain goat high in the mountain. I think he must have Superman vision!!! We stopped at a lovely spot for lunch. Picnic areas in the UK do not look like that. On the drive back to Mammoth Springs we saw another wolf who was trying to cross the road to get to the carcass we saw originally. Our guide then spotted a Bald Eagle that was just sitting in the middle of the grass. I could carry on forever with how amazing this day was. We both wish that we had booked another day to maybe go further in to Lamar. Need to get myself one of the amazing scopes so that better pictures could have been taken. Will we see any hot springs on this tour?

Each of our tours is tailored to the desires of our guests.  On this wildlife safari tour, we have the option of stopping at Mammoth Hot Springs, one of Yellowstone National Park’s most famous thermal features.

Will we see the Lamar Valley?

Due to the flooding in northern Yellowstone in June 2022, the access to the Lamar Valley has been severely restricted.  The National Park anticipates restoring access to all areas of the park by summer 2023.  In the meantime, we are free to explore several similar areas, and we have made adjustments to our tours to provide an equally exciting experience.

How much time will we spend walking?

We tailor each departure to the wishes of our guests, so we will spend as much, (or as little), time spent walking as you desire.

How many wolves are in Yellowstone?

There are currently 120 wolves in Yellowstone as of March 2024, but puppy season is in April and the numbers change yearly based on survival of pups and intra-pack dynamics which determine whether wolves stay in the Park boundaries or leave the Park to explore new territory. Average numbers yearly have maintained around 100 since the early 2000’s.

How have wolves helped the economy in the Yellowstone National Park area?

Since the wolf reintroduction to Yellowstone in 1995/96 visitors from around the world  have flocked to the region with the unique opportunity to view wild wolves in their natural habitat. Very few places on Earth can provide such intimate, consistent wolf watching. Yellowstone currently sees around 4 million visitors each year through its 5 Gates. Of the visitors to the Parks top goals, Wolves are in the top 5 for about 75% of guests. This means that tens of millions of dollars being spent in Yellowstone and its border towns on a yearly basis are a direct result of wild wolves being present in the ecosystem.

Kyle was a great guide and found us a lot of wildlife and a bear which my wife loved. Lots of geysers and great scenery.

This was a great way to see the park. Kyle was well versed in the park, its history, the flora and fauna, and the geology. It was the perfect tour for our trip of a lifetime. Very special.

There are not enough words to express how impressed we were with this trip. We were a group of 19, 11 kids / 8 adults. We spent two days with the most incredible guides, including Kyle. They were beyond knowledgeable about the wildlife, plant life and the park overall. We all learned a tremendous amount of over the course of the two days. Our guide knew where to look for the best wildlife – we were able to see two wolves feasting on an elk, which sounds a little gross but to see the wolves in their natural habitat living free was incredible. We saw bears, grizzlies, goats, elk, and of course Bison.

Kyle was not only amazing and so knowledgeable but had the instinct of where we could see a grizzly and her cubs. He was so easy going and flexible and knew exactly how to navigate the crowds at Yellowstone to give us a truly relaxing and unique experience. Lunch was good also.

Our guide Kyle was super friendly but also very knowledgeable and flexible, not hesitating to do extra hours to allow us to see more of the rich Yellowstone wildlife. We could spot bisons, elks, bears, coyotes, but the most memorable is that we could see a pack of wolves hunting! Fantastic!

With our guide’s help we were able to spot wildlife before anyone else. He knew approximately the time, area and habits of the wildlife in order for us to get a glimpse through a scope lens or binoculars (both provided). In a 8 hour tour we saw a pack of wolves and herd them howling, a coyote hunting, a black bear laying in the grass feeding on berries, mountain goats on a cliff, and two other wolves and tons of bison. It was a great day!

Kyle was amazing! He was so knowledgeable about everything. He was kind and patient when my husband couldn’t walk very fast. Absolutely loved our tour and would highly recommend it to everyone. Thanks again!

Road Conditions

The road between Mammoth Hot Springs and the northeast entrance is the only park road open to regular traffic year-round, weather permitting (closes in winter east of Cooke City, MT). All other park roads are closed to wheeled vehicles (cars, vans, motorcycles, etc.), and open to limited  snowmobile and snowcoach  travel from mid-December to mid-March. Before coming to the park, be sure to check the following:

• Park roads : the current road status and seasonal road opening/closing dates.
• Road improvement projects : active and planned construction projects that may cause delays and closures.
• Webcams : a live look at traffic approaching the north and west entrances to the park.

You might think wildlife would avoid active geyser areas, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Thermal areas provide a vital role in the Yellowstone ecosystem. Elk, bison, moose, and coyotes often hang around Mammoth Hot Springs, West Thumb Geyser Basin, Norris Hot Springs, and other areas. Old Faithful almost always has bison. It’s important to note that you should give wildlife a lot of space if you see one in a thermal area. They often cross boardwalks or hang close to parking lots. This does not mean they are tame, and you should give them at least 25 meters (75 feet) of space. 

3. Hayden Valley 

Grizzly Bears favor more open landscapes, making sighting easier in locations like Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley. It’s nearly impossible to pass through this area, located between Lake and Canyon Village, without seeing a large herd of bison. The Yellowstone River winds through this section of the park, attracting many different kinds of animals, including otters, bald eagles, black bears, coyotes, and more. Like other valleys in Yellowstone, dusk and dawn are the best times for wildlife spotting.

4. East Entrance of Yellowstone 

Entering Yellowstone from Cody, Wyoming, where we operate our wildlife tours , is one of the best places to encounter wildlife. The East Entrance to Fishing Bridge goes through a section of the park that is home to the most grizzly bears. There is almost always one hanging out a short distance from the road. If you know where he or she has been spotted recently, you will likely catch a glimpse of them. The drive from Cody to the east entrance also offers additional wildlife viewing opportunities, including big horn sheep, mountain goats, bison, and black bears. 

Wildlife Safety in Yellowstone National Park

It’s vital to remember – these animals are wild! Wildlife safety is one of the essential rules of visiting Yellowstone. Stay at least 100m (300 feet) from grizzly bears and wolves. Keep 25m (75 feet) from all other wildlife. Many visitors get too close to bison, elk, and moose, thinking they are less threatening than other wildlife. The truth is these three animals are often more aggressive than bears, especially when it comes to protecting their young. Never approach wildlife, even if they seem tame. Since Yellowstone roads are closed for regular vehicles in winter months, the best way to visit is by taking a tour with either a snowcoach or by snowmobile.

You didn't say in which season you are traveling - there are indeed fewer possibilities in the winter season than in the summer, but it's still possible to find a nice tour. Hi Anne, for Lamar Valley and Mammoth Springs, it's probably best to enter and stay in the north (Gardiner). You can also visit Grand Prismatic from there, but probably not on the same day (or you'll be driving more than sightseeing). East entrance at the Lamar Valley would also work if you start or end your trip at that side. And the West entrance is best for Grand Prismatic. It's really not that much about which entrance to take, rather your whole itinerary - where do you arrive, how much time you have, where do you leave, etc. As for tours, this 2-day tour visits all these places and more. This 4-day tour visits all these places too, and spends more time there, pus it also includes a day in Grand Teton. Both these tours start/end in Jackson Hole, WY. I don't think I have seen a 1-day tour that would cover all these places in a day. Most day tours focus either on the Lower Loop or on the Upper Loop, but not both. Hope this helps.

“This was really the best tour experience I’ve ever had. Our guide was Julie Johnston, and when she picked us up we said we wanted to pack in as many animals as we could over the next two days, and man did she oblige. She has a terrific eye for spotting things that you’d never see in a million years, and so she found three different moose, a grizzly, seven wolves, elk, mountain goats, a black bear, a bunch of different birds…  I’m probably forgetting some things. With her spotting scope she made it feel very up-close, and it was great to have a wolf look us in the eyes at what felt like arms-length.  We did also manage to visit all the scenery high points, from Old Faithful, (which obliged by going off as we arrived), the Grand Prismatic, and so on. But the animals were the high point, and I’m so glad we took this tour. 5+ stars.”

“Probably 95% of people that come to Yellowstone visit Old Faithful, but Old Faithful is just a tiny fraction of what Yellowstone National Park is all about,” said Richard Jehle, an interpretive specialist at Yellowstone. “There are so many places in Yellowstone that if they were by themselves, they would be their own national park. Yellowstone Lake , the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone , Mammoth Hot Springs , other geyser basins like Norris Geyser Basin are all just spectacular resources in their own setting.”

What is Yellowstone famous for?

Yellowstone is known for its thermal features, like Old Faithful.

“A geyser is a hot spring that throws water up in the air. That's the rarest of the thermal features, but we've got probably 10,000 or more hot springs, fumaroles or steam vents or mudpots in the park as well,” Jehle said. “Just the geysers themselves, like Old Faithful, there's more in Yellowstone than the rest of the planet combined.”

He noted the park has the largest concentration of geysers and hot springs and thermal features anywhere in the world, but that’s not all. 

“Yellowstone is also home to the largest concentration of native wildlife anywhere in the lower 48 states. More native species of wildlife like bison and elk and grizzly bears and moose and pronghorn are found here than anywhere else in the continental United States,” Jehle said, adding that the park is considered the largest relatively intact natural ecosystem anywhere in the temperate, mid-latitude section of the world. “So it's a large, more or less naturally functioning ecosystem, which is pretty rare these days. It covers almost 20 million acres, depending how you want to define it.”

Is Yellowstone in Montana or Wyoming? 

Both. The park spans parts of three states: Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.

Where do I fly into for Yellowstone?

Between May through mid-October, travelers can fly into Yellowstone Airport in West Yellowstone, Montana on Delta or United.

Year-round, visitors can fly into airports in:

• Cody and Jackson, Wyoming
• Bozeman and Billings, Montana
• Idaho Falls, Idaho

How much does it cost to get into Yellowstone National Park?

It costs $35 to enter Yellowstone National Park by private car. However, the park notes visitors coming in the south entrance have to travel through Grand Teton National Park , which charges its own entrance fee of $35 per car. Neither park requires vehicle entry reservations.

Can I see Yellowstone in one day?

No. “At a bare minimum, you need to have two full days to tour the park,” Jehle said.

He explained that’s partly due to the road system, which is laid out like a figure eight with a nearly 100-mile lower loop and roughly 70 mile upper loop.

“If you give yourself a complete full day – and I mean a full day – on each of those loops to allow yourself plenty of time to get around given traffic and wildlife and roads, you can get a pretty good feel for what the major features of Yellowstone are all about. But you can easily take a week, you can take two weeks and dive much more in depth,” he said, adding that he’s been there 35 years and is still learning about it.

What is the best time of year to go to Yellowstone National Park?

“Whenever it's open,” Jehle said. “Because it's a remarkable place and and it's never the same. Every day is different. You never know where where you're going to see something new or something magic,” 

Summer is the most popular time to visit, though he said the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn have grown increasingly popular. 

“Visiting Yellowstone in the winter is remarkable. It's like a totally different national park,” Jehle said. “Because of the cold, winter air, you will see geysers and thermal features that you don't even see in the summer because there's so much more steam … And the wildlife viewing in the winter, in some ways, is better than in the summer.”

Visiting during the winter can be trickier because park’s interior closes to cars starting in November. There is a 50-mile stretch of road between Gardiner and Cooke City, Montana, that stays open all year, but Jehle explained:

• From Nov. 1 through Dec. 15, interior roads close to the public to allow for enough snow to accumulation so roads can be groomed for snow vehicles.
• From mid-December to mid-March, only snowmobiles and snowcoaches are allowed on interior roads, mostly on third-party guided trips. However up to four groups of unguided visitors are allowed in the park daily with a lottery-based permit and other requirements .
• Interior roads close to the public again after March 15, so the park can begin plowing roads. 
• Interior roads begin to open around the third Friday in April, but depending on conditions, some higher elevation roads might not be cleared until after Memorial Day.

Visitors can find the latest road closures and conditions on the park’s website.

How did Yellowstone get its name?

According to the United States Geological Survey , “the name was attributed as early as 1805 to Native Americans who were referring to yellow sandstones along the banks of the Yellowstone River in eastern Montana, several hundred miles downstream and northeast of the park.”

Are there any Native American people in Yellowstone? 

Not residing there presently, aside from park staff. But the park’s website notes, “For thousands of years before Yellowstone became a national park, it was a place where people hunted, fished, gathered plants, quarried obsidian, and used the thermal waters for religious and medicinal purposes.”

“Yellowstone is your national park,” Jehle said. “I'm lucky enough I work here. I get to live here, but I don't own Yellowstone. The owners of Yellowstone are the American public, the people of the world.” 

“But with you know, with that comes a huge responsibility,” he added. “One of the primary reasons national parks exist is to pass on to the future, to our kids and their kids and their kids forever and ever in as good or a better condition as we found them . So by all means, come to Yellowstone, enjoy it, but take ownership of it and love it and pass it on.”

Summer is now officially here which means families are loading up their cars and heading west to take in all of the wild and beautiful sights and sounds of Yellowstone National Park.

Over 2.2 million acres of raw, natural beauty and wildlife is housed mainly in Wyoming, but spills a bit into Montana and Idaho. It was established in 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant, making it America’s first national park, and most likely the first in the world.

The park is home to over 69,000 native species of flora and is also widely considered to be the finest megafauna wildlife habitat in the world, home to nearly 60 species of mammals. Some of its most famous predators are grizzly and black bear, wolves, mountain lions, lynx, and coyotes, while herds of bison, elk, moose, mountain goat, and bighorn sheep roam freely.

Combine this with snowy mountain peaks, volcanos, waterfalls, hot springs, geysers, forests, meadows, and huge plains and you’ve got just about the closest thing we’ve got to heaven on earth.

Considering all this, it’s no wonder so many people make the trip to see these wonders for themself each year, with over 3 million people each year making a visit.

But when you’ve got that many people, there’s bound to be more than a few idiots mixed in that will do what they do best: Wreak havoc on an otherwise great time.

Bison Sends Nosy Tourist Flying Into Tree

It’s a story as old as time.

Bison gets close to an area with some people. People notice bison and say “Wow, that’s so cool! Let’s get closer for a better picture!” Bison doesn’t like the people being there and charges. The bison wins.

In this particular case, this video from way back shows a man in Yellowstone National Park, standing very close to a bison with only a tree in between them, presumably trying to hide from the 1500 pound monster. Shockingly, it didn’t work.

The bison sniffs him out, starts kicking up dirt in a clear sign of “If you don’t leave I’ll hurt you”, then charges and absolutely launches the grown man high into the pines.

I mean sends him up there like a Christmas ornament, this guy got  tossed .

It just goes to show you… don’t pet the fluffy cows. They will mess you up.

Woman Approaches Grizzly Bear, Gets Charged By It And The Long Arm Of The Law

I get that the internet has inundated us with videos of wild animals looking all cute and cuddly, but does this lady not realize what that bear she’s creeping up on is capable of?

Despite plenty of warnings from fellow tourists (who were also too close), she just needed to get that picture and keep approaching the grizzly, who obviously didn’t like it very much and charged her. Fortunately, it was just a bluff charge to scare her off, because she reacted well after it would have been much too late.

Are you even appreciating being that close to an animal if you only look at it through your phone screen? I obviously don’t condone this, but at least get a good look with your eyes…

Turns out, getting that close to a wild grizzly is not just stupid, it’s illegal.

According to  NPR , the woman was sentenced to 4 days in jail after pleading guilty to willfully remaining, approaching, and photographing wildlife within 100 yards.

Baby Bison Euthanized After Man Places In Trunk Of Car

A textbook example of what not to do.

While visiting Yellowstone, a group of tourists  reportedly  grew worried that a baby bison needed to be rescued from the cold elements, picked up the small buffalo, put it in their car, and drove it to the ranger station.

Obviously, the buffalo was just fine and needed no help living in the 39 to 50 degrees of the day, and this whole ordeal would be funny if the end wasn’t so tragic.

Park rangers made multiple attempts to reunite the calf with its herd, but the efforts failed as the bison rejected it. The rangers were left with no choice but to euthanize it after it caused various issues by approaching people and cars near roadways after it was released.

As if it needs to be said, wild animals do not need your help…

Bison Tosses 9-Year Old Girl Into The Air After Adults Abandon Her

Not only did they make a bison charge them, they left a poor 9 year old girl completely helpless.

A group of tourists filmed themselves getting within 5 to 10 feet of a grazing bison multiple times over the course of 20 minutes before the beast had enough and charged at two adult men and a small child.

In a showing of the utmost degree of pathetic, both men took off running, leaving the young girl completely helpless and the closest target. She was tossed tumbling at least 10 feet in the air.

Luckily, she was fine, but my goodness, how awful can you get?

Drunk Tourist Taunts Bison, Almost Gets Flattened, Goes To Jail

I’ve done quite a few dumb things while drunk, but I’ve never been so intoxicated I thought playing chicken with a buffalo was a good idea…

Apparently, this guy and his buddies were on a road trip to have “one last hurrah” before entering an alcohol treatment program, and part of that hurrah was visiting Yellowstone and trying to get as close to a bison as possible.

So when one approached their car, he got out on the road and did his best matador impersonation, coming dangerously close (multiple times) to getting impaled.

While he was able to get out of the situation unharmed physically, he was sentenced to 130 days in jail: 60 for harassing wildlife, 60 for interfering with law enforcement, and 10 for disorderly conduct.

Hope that 15 minutes of fame was worth it…

Indigenous tribes welcome rare white buffalo calf in Yellowstone ceremony

WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. — Sage burned on the banks of Hebgen Lake as Indigenous tribal leaders marched in procession Wednesday morning to honor the birth of a white buffalo calf .

They sang songs and danced in a sacred ceremony under cloudy skies as hundreds of onlookers watched in silence.

The rare white calf’s arrival this month in Yellowstone National Park signaled, under tribal lore, both a blessing and a warning to the world.

“Mother Earth is sick and has a fever,” said Chief Arvol Looking Horse , spiritual leader of the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Oyate, known as the Great Sioux Nation. “It is the fulfillment of our prophecy.”

The young buffalo, which tribal leaders named Wakan Gli, or Sacred Return, was presumably in the wilderness with its mother during the ceremony near Yellowstone National Park.Its birth is seen as the second coming of the White Buffalo Calf Woman, who first appeared to the Lakota thousands of years ago when the buffalo were scarce and the people were hungry.

She taught the Lakota how to pray and honor the Earth through ceremony and promised to return one day in the guise of a white bison calf with black eyes, nose and hooves.

“I shall return to stand upon the Earth when nothing is good,” she told the Lakota people, Looking Horse said. “Her message speaks out loud and clear right now."

Preservationist and tribal advocate Devin Old Man said the white calf comes at a time of great peril for people everywhere, especially tribes that are increasingly isolated from one another and the world around them. “It’s hard to be a Native these days,” he said. “We have to look at the bigger picture.”

Bison have long held a near-mythic status in the U.S., even outside tribal culture. They were declared the first national mammal in 2016 when President Barack Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act.

Every year, millions of tourists visit Yellowstone National Park to catch a glimpse of the majestic animals, which were once hunted nearly to extinction.

Their numbers dwindled dramatically throughout the 19th century, but the population is slowly rebounding through conservation efforts.

In Montana, however, buffalo face a number of constraints that threaten them despite their popularity.They are not allowed to roam outside designated areas, including on private land without the authorization of the landowner. Last year, a harsh winter storm drove nearly 2,000 buffalo out of the park and into lower elevations. They were killed or transferred out of the area.

“These are the last remnants of the 30 to 60 million that were once on the continent,” said Mike Mease, a co-founder of the conservation group Buffalo Field Campaign, which works to prevent the slaughter of bison.

Mease estimates that just 5,000 buffalo now live in Yellowstone.

“This is where the buffalo should roam,” he said, pointing to the lush valley filled with meadows and streams.

In South Dakota, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe is working to increase the bison population in hope of reintroducing it as a main source of nutrition, said Ryan LaBeau, chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

“We want to get that food back to our people,” he said.

The birth of the white calf stunned not just tribal communities but also visitors to the national park.

Photographer Jordan Creech said that in all the years he has been leading tours through Yellowstone, he never imagined he would stumble upon the birth of a sacred animal.But on June 4, as he was driving a tour group through the park, observing badgers, bears and other wildlife, he came upon a scene like no other.

An American buffalo, or bison, was running along the road with her amniotic sac protruding from her belly. Creech knew she was about to give birth and tried to follow her. But the mother-to-be swam across a river and disappeared over a hill.

Some time later, Creech spotted the bison again, this time with her new calf. But unlike most newborns that have reddish-orange coloring, this calf was white.

“I know how important it is to the Native people,” said Creech, who was among the first people to snap photos of the white calf. “I’m still processing. It feels unreal.”

Looking Horse said he grew up hearing stories of the White Buffalo Calf Woman and hoped she would not return under his watch because it would be a sign the world needs healing. A white calf was born in Wisconsin in 1994, he said, and he remembers feeling both awe and dread as scientists began warning the world about the effects of climate change.

That another was born 30 years later feels prescient as heat waves and wildfires spread across the country, he said.

Bison have been integral to tribal culture for generations, providing an important source of food, clothing, fuel, tools, shelter and spirituality.

“I can’t believe this is the second warning,” he said, adding that Earth is a source for life, not a resource to be exploited.

‘1 in a million’ white buffalo at Yellowstone hasn’t been seen since its birth on June 4

(AP) - Yellowstone National Park officials said Friday a rare white buffalo sacred to Native Americans has not been seen since its birth on June 4.

The birth of the white buffalo in the wild, which fulfilled a Lakota prophecy that portends better times, was the first recorded in Yellowstone history and is a landmark event for the ecocultural recovery of bison, said park officials in confirming the birth for the first time.

It is an extraordinarily rare occurrence: A white buffalo is born once in every 1 million births, or even less frequently, the park said.

Whether the calf – named Wakan Gli, which means “Return Sacred” in Lakota – is still alive is unknown.

Each spring, about one in five calves die shortly after birth due to natural hazards but park officials declined to directly respond to questions about whether officials believed it has died.

They confirmed its birth after receiving photos and reports from multiple park visitors, professional wildlife watchers, commercial guides and researchers. But since June 4, park staffers have not been able to find it and officials are not aware of any other confirmed sightings.

Native American leaders earlier this week held a ceremony to honor the sacred birth of the white buffalo and give the name.

A Different Kind of Quiet: Finding Solitude in Yellowstone’s Wilderness

Quiet. Solitude. Wilderness.

As I tightened the last few straps on my backpack and hit the trail for three days deep in the backcountry of Yellowstone, I contemplated these three words and what they mean to me. It is becoming increasingly challenging to find quiet, solitude, or wilderness in our ever-modernizing world. But in places like Yellowstone, with vast expanses of mostly untouched and natural landscapes, it is still possible to connect on a deeply personal and spiritual level with our fundamental nature. 

With each step away from the road and into the wild, I can feel myself becoming more in tune with my senses and the world around me. The agitated chatter of chickadees is no longer a subconscious background noise but a lively conversation informing me that there is likely a kestrel, sharp-shinned hawk, pine marten, or other small predator in the area. The coolness of the clouds passing periodically in front of the sun is a reminder to keep an eye on the southwest for a sign of the thunderstorms forecasted to pass through later in the day. The smell of lush grass and wildflowers is a clue that this area has some ripe, nutritious forage, and I should keep an eye out for bison, elk, and black bears.

We enjoyed a spectacular sunset from camp on our first night of the trip.

The family of four I am guiding has never been backpacking before, and I want to make their first trip a unique and memorable experience. With both nights at the same campsite, I decided to spend the middle day taking them on an off-trail day hike to fully experience what “wilderness” truly feels like. 

High up on the slopes of the Buffalo Plateau, we encounter a small group of pronghorn — North America’s fastest land animal — who give us a curious glance before going back to grazing. The sound of the gushing Yellowstone River recedes below us in the distance, and the road a mile beyond the river feels like a distant memory. I am taking them on a route I first explored over ten years ago, and though I haven’t managed to hike this particular area since then, I still feel a strong personal connection to the landscape and my memories there.

We often watch bison, elk, and wolves traveling through this area from spotting scopes set up along the distant roadway. Up on the road, looking out at this vast hillside, even the mightiest bison looks like a tiny ant in the distance. It is hard to truly wrap your mind around the way the landscape unfolds from that long-distance view. But standing here amid that wild expanse, we become intimately familiar with every rise and dip of the hillside, every small drainage gushing with fresh snowmelt, every rock and antler dotting the landscape. 

We encountered several pronghorn on our hike. These creatures are known to be somewhat skittish when approached, but by keeping a respectful distance we were able to observe them without disturbing them.

Cresting the ridge, we level off into a small marsh tucked into a low spot in the mountainside. Out in the reeds, a pair of sandhill cranes are being chased around by a feisty blackbird, no doubt for the crime of trespassing too close to a nest. The juxtaposition of the tiny songbird making the four-foot-tall crane flee for its life is rather amusing. 

Closer to the edge of the marsh, a cinnamon teal sits on a nest of eggs, and a couple of soras — small marsh birds that are easy to hear but frustratingly difficult to see — call tantalizingly from the long grass. I am tempted to spend the next hour trying to catch a glimpse of one, but I know that is a futile mission, and the storm clouds to the southwest are inching ever closer—time to start heading for lower ground. The birds in this marsh seem unperturbed by our brief intrusion into their lives, and I am confident they won’t spare us a second thought after we move on. It is refreshing to know there are still places in the world where we are an unimportant aside in the lives of the native fauna.

We opt for a different route back to camp, traversing a steep hillside with incredible views of the upper reaches of Hellroaring Mountain. Along the way, we spook a small bachelor group of bison bulls and decide to head further uphill to give them a wide berth. After almost ten miles of off-trail wandering, there is a certain sense of tameness when we eventually link back up with the trail for the last mile into camp. But that’s not to say some small modern comforts are bad — I am thankful to relax with a couple of marshmallows roasted on a stick over the JetBoil after dinner.

After s’mores, my group heads into the tent to play cards while I elect to relax and watch the last hour of daylight go by from my trusty camp chair. I sit in silence, listening to the rush of Hellroaring Creek (muddy and bulging with spring snowmelt) and watching a family of bighorn sheep gently picking their way across the talus slope in the distance. A last dash of color illuminates the clouds from underneath, and then dusk’s muted blues and grays take over. In the morning, we will pack up camp and return to the hustle and bustle of the outside world. But for now, I am content to sit and enjoy the quiet and solitude of an evening in the remote wilderness of Yellowstone.
