How To Spend A Perfect Day in Beautiful Sidney, British Columbia

sidney bc places to visit

  • British Columbia
  • Destinations

For years I drove right by Sidney, BC. We arrived at the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal minutes from Sidney on our yearly family vacations and had the end destination in mind: a freshwater-saltwater lake called Nitinat.

I was always curious about Sidney by the Sea. I had heard tales from boating friends mooring their boats here and wanting to stay longer. What was this town at the southern tip of Vancouver Island and the northern tip of the Saanich Peninsula that was so appealing and that I had driven by a million times?

Fast forward many years, and I have now had the opportunity to spend time in Sidney by the Sea and know first hand its appeal and seaside charm.

Where Is Sidney, British Columbia?

Sidney, BC, is located on the northern tip of the Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It is located less than 2 miles from the Victoria International Airport. Sidney is also located less than a 10-minute drive from the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, where ferries come and go regularly between mainland BC (Vancouver) and the Southern Gulf Islands.

Sidney is also the only Canadian port of call in the Washington State Ferries system with ferry connections to the San Juan Islands and the Anacortes.

Note: Due to COVID, this route is not currently in service (October 2021).

Sidney is a great base for exploring Canada’s Gulf Islands, is only a short drive to the famous Butchart Gardens, and a 25-minute drive to downtown Victoria. Sidney, though, warrants some dedicated time.

Explore Sidney at the beginning of a trip to Vancouver Island or as the grand finale and plan on more time than less. It’s laid back. You’ll want to slow your walking pace. Here is how to spend a day in Sidney by the Sea.

Sidney, BC waterfront walkway

1. Stroll The Sidney Waterfront Walkway

Sidney is nestled right into the shoreline and without question has amazing seaside walks. The Waterfront Walkway, a flat, paved walkway that is 2.2 miles long, hugs the shoreline and has interesting statues to examine. The views along the Sidney Waterfront Walkway are spectacular and include Mt. Baker and nearby Sidney Island. The fresh salty air, the seabird life, and the changing shore with high and low tides will thrill any curious ocean loving soul!

If you want a longer walk keep heading south towards Lochside Drive. Walk past the Sidney- Anacortes Ferry Terminal and Tulista Park and choose to stroll either the upper or lower pathway or perhaps a combination of both. I love the naturally stacked-up, bleached driftwood. Perch on a carefully selected piece of driftwood, or on one of the available benches, face the Salish Sea and contemplate life.

2. Browse To Your Heart’s Content In Sidney, Canada’s Only Booktown

I’m always drawn to the bookshops in a town or city. I love browsing, soaking up the literary atmosphere, and seeing what second-hand titles I can add to my collection. If you are a bibliophile, you’re going to love Sidney, BC. There are at last count six, but I did read somewhere that there are nine, independent bookstores, which in Canada is quite something. Thus Sidney’s title, Canada’s Only Booktown!

These inviting bookshops are all within walking distance. Four are located on Beacon Ave, Sidney’s main street and the others are around the corner. Here are a few names to get you started: Tanner’s Books, Beacon Books, The Haunted Bookshop, and Galleon Books and Antiques. Allow some time for the book-lover in your group to peruse the bookstores in Sidney BC! Who knows what title will be found!

Wooden pier in Sidney, British Columbia

3. Watch The Crab Fishing On Sidney’s Pier

Walk down to Sidney’s pier and just watch. Crab traps are pulled up, captured crabs examined, and either kept or tossed back in the sea. More bait is added to the traps before being dropped back into the water. There’s a hum of concentrated delight on the Sidney pier.

Jellyfish at the aquarium

4. Visit The World-Class Aquarium

One of only two aquariums on Vancouver Island, The Shaw Centre For The Salish Sea in Sidney, is a not-for-profit aquarium dedicated to the ecological diversity of the Salish Sea. The Shaw Centre For The Salish Sea, situated on Sidney’s waterfront on WSANEC Coast Salish Indigenous territories, has over 3,500 animals representing 160 species from the Salish Sea. Gorgeous displays of sea life, a hands-on touch pool, a rare orca skeleton, and displays of Coast Salish art make this a “must-do” on your visit to Sidney.

Admission Prices: Adult: $14.50; Senior (65+): $11.70 (USD)

Orcas off of Vancouver Island

5. Go On A Whale Watching Tour

There are many places on Vancouver Island to access whale watching tours. Right here in Sidney, which is located in the midst of the Gulf Islands, is a great choice. This area sees transient orca pods, seals and sea lion colonies, and plenty of seabirds. Hit the water and be wowed by stunning scenery and remarkable wildlife. Book a tour with Sidney Whale Watching .

6. Enjoy Some Gin And Craft Beer Tasting

Victoria Distillers , situated on the waterfront in Sidney, creates award-winning spirits, most notably gin. Tastings are available Thursdays-Sundays from 12-6 p.m. and, of course, the retail store is the perfect place to pick up a gorgeous bottle of the unique indigo-hued Empress 1908 Gin for the gin lover you know.

Canada is crazy for micro-breweries. It is great fun for the beer lovers in the group to taste-test different flavored small batch beers. Just opened in October 2021 is the newest one on the block. Beacon Brewing Ltd , a family-owned distillery, is in the heart of Sidney. Swing on by and sample its beers. How about a Better Late Than Never Pale Ale or a Ladder Truck Lager?

Galloping Goose Trail, British Columbia

7. Cycle Sidney

The outdoorsy side of you might be elated in Sidney! Rent a bike and hit the trails. Ride along the seaside paths in Sidney and take a break here and there at a restaurant or pub. If you’re up for a longer ride, head over to The Flight Path , a mostly flat 5.8-mile trail that circles the Victoria Airport. This bike trail on the Saanich Peninsula passes through farmland and has views of Mt. Baker and the Salish Sea.

If you feel like having a cool drink and a Vancouver Island cider tasting experience, cycle about 25-minutes to Sea Cider Farm and Ciderhouse .

Pro Tip: Rent a bicycle in Sidney here .

8. Where To Eat In Sidney

There are plenty of places to eat in Sidney. There are unique local restaurants as well as chain food outlets. Here are my suggestions:

The Farmer’s Daughter : One of my favorite experiences in Sidney was going to the Farmer’s Daughter for a cheese and wine flight. Perhaps it was my experience living in France or possibly just a love of cheese and wine but the careful pairing of artisan cheese and wine was a winner. I had the white wine flight while my daughter had the red. The Farmer’s Daughter has a warm ambiance that invites you to sip and savor. If you don’t have time to linger, why not purchase a carefully sourced cheese from its storefront and add it to a picnic feast by the Salish Sea.

The Rumrunner Pub and Restaurant: No visit to Sidney is complete without sitting on an outdoor patio (weather permitting) and sipping a refreshing drink with a spectacular sea view. At the Rumrunner, there are two outdoor patios and fireplaces indoors for the colder weather. A focus on west coast cuisine, including plenty of seafood choices, paired with an inviting, fun atmosphere is a good reason to pop over to the Rumrunner Pub and try it out!

9. Where To Stay In Sidney

The sidney pier hotel and spa.

Stay at the lovely Sidney Pier Hotel And Spa . Staying by the ocean, it is always a bonus to have a glorious view from your hotel room. Book a room with a view and with the hotel’s central location, you can park the car and walk everywhere.

The Beacon Inn

The Beacon Inn , a Bed and Breakfast with nine uniquely designed rooms is right in the heart of Sidney and provides that cozy, homey feel.

The Brentwood Bay Resort

Although not right in Sidney, Brentwood Bay is just a short drive away. The Brentwood Bay Resort is a luxurious resort with views over Brentwood Bay and the marina. The dining room is excellent.

Pro Tip

Located just off the shore of Sidney is Sidney Island. At the northern tip of Sidney Island is Canada’s newest national park, Sidney Spit Marine Park . The long sandbar or sandy spit is ideal for a day trip from Sidney. Pack a picnic and plan on exploring tidal flats, salt marshes, and hiking along beaches or through conservation areas. Birdlife alone will keep you interested for hours.

Sidney Spit is accessible all year by boat or kayak. A passenger ferry runs from the wharf on Beacon Street in Sidney from mid-May until Labor Day weekend in September.

So much to do and see, in beautiful ‘Sidney by the Sea’

April 12, 2023 //  by  Daniel Shipley

It was April 1, and as my wife and I drove toward the small seaside town of Sidney. B.C. , the parting clouds and brilliant sunshine made the rainy forecast seem like an April Fool’s Day joke.

Known as ‘Sidney by the Sea,’ the town is a popular tourist destination, especially in the spring and summer. Located a 45-minute drive out Highway 17 from downtown Victoria, at the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula, Sidney is just minutes away from the Victoria International Airport and the BC Ferries terminal at Swartz Bay.

A spirited welcome

We started our afternoon with a visit to Victoria Distillers , located in the heart of town, and just steps from the Sidney Waterfront Walkway . Although they’re not currently offering distillery tours, the retail space and tasting room is open Thursday through Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m.

Victoria Distillers is one of Canada’s oldest small-batch spirits companies, and the unique waterfront distillery features copper pot stills, producing a range of spirits – most notably their award-winning gins.

A sampling of spirits at Victoria Distillers is a great way to start off an afternoon exploring beautiful Sidney. B.C. Dan Shipley/West Coast Traveller photo.

As big fans of their Empress 1908 Indigo Gin – inspired by the historic Fairmont Empress Hotel in downtown Victoria – my wife and I were excited to see if they had any new releases, and we weren’t disappointed.

As we entered the tasting room, adorned with an array of brightly coloured spirits, the friendly staff said they were indeed releasing a new gin that day!

The Empress 1908 Elderflower Rose Gin with its delicate rose hue, is a blend of nine floral botanicals, inspired by the many flowers that give Victoria the moniker ‘The Garden City.’ This combination produces a flavour and aroma that’s smooth, fresh and light, and as we sipped, we learned that the rose undertones of the colour comes from an infusion of black carrot.

Victoria Distillers also produces brandy, vodka and a chocolate liqueur called Cacao that’s made with fair trade Ecuadorian cacao nibs and husks, refined by Victoria’s Sirene Chocolate Makers . We finished our tasting tour of this unique Sidney attraction with sips of the sweet spirit before heading to our next stop, wondering about the potential medicinal properties of elderflowers.

Craft brews and artisan eats

A few blocks’ stroll from the Sidney waterfront we found Small Gods Brewing Co. , a new, family-owned and operated brewery, perfectly suited for this quaint but evolving town.

We were welcomed by a bright, open space, alive with the sounds of laughter, conversation and children chattering. Designed to be inclusive and family-friendly, it was busy and quite loud, but the atmosphere was by no means oppressive.

Opened in August 2022, this unique brewery features an array of tasty craft brews and delicious artisan eats, all wrapped up with a literary twist.

“We wanted to fit within the fabric of the community,” says co-owner Chris Bjerrisgard. “There are more bookstores per capita in Sidney than anywhere else in Canada, and my wife is a writer with built-in industry connections, so it’s something we have a real passion and understanding for.”

Small Gods hosts monthly events, including author readings, literary trivia nights and a book club. The taproom boasts shelves stocked with books, an antique typewriter and games and books for kids.

“Small Gods is also intended to be a safe, inclusive community,” Bjerrisgaard says. “I’d been working my way up in the industry since 2009, but when I got laid off during COVID, I had time to sit back and assess things, and saw that there needed to be a reckoning in the industry in terms of inclusivity and acceptance. I realized that to make that happen, I needed to be an owner and a leader, and that was the catalyst that started it all.”

The first Sunday of each month is their Storyteller Series, an evening of readings from local and visiting writers. Tickets are only $5, and are available online and at the door.

“We had our first reading last month,” Bjerrisgaard says. “We released a pink guava hazy pale ale called Uncertain Kin at the same time, which went over really well.”

I was intrigued by their Sweet Thursday Gummy IPA, which Bjerrisgaard informed me “tastes like gummy bears and fuzzy peach candy due to the two kinds of hops we use.” He was right! The flavour was full-bodied but not overly sweet, and though I don’t normally choose this kind of brew, it was fantastic!

Although not much of a beer drinker, my wife enjoyed a tropical sour brew called The Girl from Everywhere, which was lighter than expected, so right up her alley.

The menu features snacks and sides like a hummus plate, antipasto, warm soft pretzel and salad, and mains like spaghetti and meatballs, mac and cheese and an assortment of sandwiches on bread baked fresh in-house.

“We reduce food waste by using our bread in different ways depending on freshness,” Bjerrisgaard says. “Once it’s no longer fresh enough for sandwiches, it goes into our meatballs. We also try to source our food as locally and sustainably as we can.”

We both enjoyed delicious sandwiches – I had the Classic Italian and my wife ordered The Geno – before exchanging waves with the friendly servers and heading back toward the waterfront to enjoy the sun.

The perfect way to walk off an afternoon of food and drink is a stroll along the Sidney waterfront to enjoy the Seaside Sculpture Walk. Dan Shipley/West Coast Traveller photo

Seaside sculptures

The perfect way to walk off an afternoon of food and drink was a waterfront stroll along the Sidney Seaside Sculpture Walk . Many of the pieces are for sale, while others are public art commissioned by the town.

We finished our walk at the town’s iconic fisherman’s pier, where you can visit its fish market or try your luck casting a line or dropping a crab trap. Here we found the walk’s final sculpture, Old Man by the Sea , and a cheerful local couple told us his name is “Henry” and that people often leave flowers or a beer in his hand!

There was still so much more to see in this friendly seaside town, but this seemed like a wonderful way to wrap up the afternoon.

  • Victoria Distillers is located at 9891 Seaport Pl.
  • Small Gods Brewing Co . is located 9835 Third St.

Sidney, BC: All the best things to do here

Interested in visiting Sidney, BC? I can help. I’ve been coming to Sidney ever since I was four-years-old. Less than a 30-minute drive from the capital city of Victoria , there’s a lot to do in this sparkling seaside town. We’ll share the best activities depending on your buisness.

Sidney, B.C.: Check out the amazing, fun things to do here

Disclosure: Travels with Baggage sometimes receives compensation and/or hosted travel and sample products related to blog posts. This story may include affiliate links for which we receive a small commission at no extra cost to consumers.

I vaguely remember the original trek – moving cousins out to this BC town when I was four-years-old. Since then, I’ve been back and forth too many times to count. And if you’ve ever taken the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria, you’ve likely visited too, as Sidney is where the ferry terminal is, plus it’s the closest town to the airport.

Table of Contents

Officially known as Sidney-by-the-Sea, this B.C. gem is a charming town with a population just over 10,000, anchoring the Salish Sea (more on that below). Here, you’ll rack up plenty of outdoor time without even trying. There are pebbly beaches to comb, green spaces to explore and lovely trails for wandering in Sidney BC.

Besides marine life, Sidney is well placed for anyone interested in going sea kayaking, whale watching and even the famed Butchart Gardens is nearby. You can visit all year round as it has some of Canada’s mildest weather. I love visiting in late winter and early springs – whenever I’m in need of a good dose of green and fresh seafood.

Sidney, BC: What to know about this royal hideaway

Salish Sea

You may be confused with references to the Salish Sea when researching things to do in Sidney or even Vancouver Island. This body of water refers to the coastal waters off the south coast of  British Columbia.

Basically, the Salish Sea refers to these bodies of water: the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound. These waterways were officially designated the Salish Sea in 2010. Some folks, however, don’t love this designation on the basis that this waterway is truly a series of interconnected straits ,  sounds and inlets and isn’t technically a sea by definition.

I’m in favour of the name change. And FYI the Coast Salish are the indigenous Peoples living in southwest BC and northwest Washington along the Salish Sea.

Sidney, B.C. shopping

Of course, shopping is one of my favourite things to do and Sidney, B.C. has quite a few quaint stores and coffee shops. (More on their charming bookshops below). There’s loads of public art – both outdoors inside the many cafes. Sidney even has its own waterfront sculpture walk.

It’s such a lovely place to stroll and browse, especially since the speed limit in town has been reduced to 30 km. All the hustle and bustle of city life seems light years away.

Sidney, B.C. bookstores

One surprising thing about Sidney B.C. is the number of bookstores it sports. Saunter along Beacon Avenue, the town’s main drag, and discover why Sidney is known as Canada’s Booktown.

These bookstores have a wide range of topics. There’s a children’s bookshop, one that’s haunted, some even have antiques in them. They’re all very kitschy and lovely.

Salish_Sea sidney BC

Things to do in Sidney, B.C.

What’s great about Sidney, B.C. is that it offers plenty of diversions for all ages. Pretty much everything in Sidney is within easy walking distance, and the town is an affordable basecamp for families. You could easily stay here instead of B.C.’s capital city of Victoria and still get to see all the main attractions.

Since this unpretentious town anchors the sea, sea kayaking is one of the most popular things to do.   Blue Dog Kayaking offers rentals, lessons and tours, as does A Paddle in the Park and Sidney Whale Watching. There’s plenty of SUP to rent from the Sidney Marina, too.

SUP sidney BC

Playgrounds

If you’ve got kids, there are three main playgrounds you could hit up in Sidney. There’s Melissa Playground, but better I think is Tulista Park. It’s got a a skateboard park, sand volleyball, boat launch, picnic facilities and there’s plenty of free parking.

If views are what you’re after, head to the waterfront for Beacon Park. Here, you’ll find public art, more skateboard and picnic areas, a fenced playground area, and lovely walkways for strolling along the sea. If it’s a hot day, be sure to visit the lovely little splash pad at Iroquois Park.

biking along the ocean at sunset

For spa lovers, Haven Spa and Salon situated inside Sidney Pier Hotel and Spa is where you’ll want to decompress. I think you can tell a lot about a spa by the products they carry, and you can’t go wrong with the Eminence Organic Skin Care and Aveda Hair Care lines they feature. Haven offers all the top treatments – facials, massage, wraps, scrubs, mani-pedi, waxing and threading to choose from.

If you’re looking for things to do out of town, The Butchart Gardens is an obvious one. Lesser known, but equally as intriguing for children is Butterfly Gardens.

Less than a 20-minute drive away from Sidney, this tranquil indoor garden contains lush foliage and beautiful blooms. It’s also home to many rescued tropical animals including flamingos, tortoises and even poison dart frogs!

The big draw, however, are the thousands of free flying butterflies nibbling on fruit trees such as papaya and pineapple. Don’t be surprised if they like you so much they decide to land on you!

Whale watching in Sidney, B.C.

There’s plenty of whale watching tours that depart from Victoria (the B.C. capital city), but Sidney lies in the midst of the resident orca feeding grounds. This means that tours that depart from Sidney grant you more time for watching the whales vs commuting out to find them.

sidney bc whale watching

In addition to orcas, you may see grey whales, humpback and minke whales, too. Plus there’s loads of other marine life including too many sea lion colonies to count.

marine life vancouver island

Sidney Whale Watching begins tours in March and wrap up at the end of October. They boast a 95% success rate for sighting whales aboard their custom built 30 ft boats – built specifically for marine life viewing. And if you don’t spot a whale, they’ll let you take another tour free of charge.

Sidney, B.C. aquarium

You’ll be hooked upon entry at the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea . Access to this, the only aquarium in Sidney B.C., requires a journey in a tricked out elevator meant to invoke a submarine being submerged into the sea.

The floor rumbles, lights flash and all the bells and whistles go off until you’ve arrived at sea level AKA the basement. Devoted to discovering the Salish Sea, this aquarium offers more than the usual tanks and fish feeding frenzy. Kids interact with the ocean through a number of different stations.

See how sharp a killer whale’s teeth are, hold the rib of a grey whale or peer into a microscope to watch minuscule marine life. Especially exciting is the touch tank where everyone can get their hands wet petting jewel-toned starfish, spotted sea slugs and hypnotic anemones.

shaw centre for the salish sea

Sidney, B.C. fish market

Want to cook your own seafood? Pop into Satellite Fish Co., the main fish market, at the end of the pier in Sidney. This is the best spot to buy fresh off the boat B.C. fish and shellfish.

Satellite Fish Co really knows how to pack for travel, too. One of their fishmongers told me that a Chinese client returned home and their crab was still alive after 15 hours of travel. I rarely return home without some fresh crab, and you shouldn’t either.

Cedarwood Inn

Cedarwood Inn and Suites holds a special place in my heart. Every single time I’ve visited Sidney I’ve stayed at this motel. Pretty much every Easter I had as a kid growning up was spent here, searching for eggs in their lovely green space.

It can be hard to find reasonably priced waterfront accommodation, but you’ll find it at Cedarwood Inn . From a quick glance, it looks like a motel, but there’s more to it than that. It’s got a range of accommodation from motel-style rooms to kitschy cabins overlooking a central garden, and the new addition boasts condo-like suites with jet tubs, fireplaces and balconies overlooking the ocean.

Be sure to request a room with a kitchenette if you fancy preparing a seafood feast with your bounty bought from the docks . There’s also a communal BBQ and picnic tables outside. Cedarwood Inn is less than a 10 minute walk into downtown Sidney and is right across the street from the pebbly beach.

On the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula lies a small, seaside sanctuary fondly known as Sidney-by-the-Sea. In contrast to the nearly 90,000 people living in Victoria, Sidney’s population reaches about 12,000. Far from a boring small-town however, Sidney is riddled with things to do. In fact, it’s practically an outdoor lover’s paradise. For those fonder of the indoor things in life, the town is also known for its great shopping, books, restaurants, cafes and aquarium. As quaint as it is rich in activity, there is plenty to be discovered in this small, harbour town set on the Salish Sea.

Outdoor Adventures

Just a few paddle strokes away from some of the Gulf Islands and islets; a kayaking adventure out of Sidney is almost a necessity. Day trips aren’t the only ones calling from Sidney’s pier, however. The nearby Sidney Spit and islands make for the perfect locations to camp and extend the adventure into a multiday kayaking excursion. The small town has plenty of kayak rental companies. Beginners don’t have to worry either, as many will provide lessons and tours.

Being beside the sea, it’s only natural that the staple of the West Coast diet is seafood. It also means there are more than a few fishing charters that will take guests out onto the water. Try your hand at catching dinner for yourself. Lingcod, Salmon and Halibut are on the list for prized fishing possessions and make for a great meal. For those keen on trying out fishing, but who would like to keep both feet planted firmly on shore, crabbing off of the Bevan Pier is always an option. It’s located right in the heart of the coastal town. With a lot of patience and a dash of luck, fresh crab legs could be on the dinner menu. Just be sure to have the proper fishing licenses. If fishing isn’t your thing at all, you can always pop by the fish market near the pier and pick up the catch of the day.

  • Whale Watching

The waters around both Victoria and Sidney are home to a number of pods of Transient Orcas; they call the place home all year round. Pick a charter and prepare for a day of adventure on the water, while searching for these ocean beauties. Sidney boasts the title of Vancouver Island’s highest concentration of Orca sightings. Aside from Killer Whales, there are plenty of other whale breeds and marine life to be seen. Any day on the water is a day well spent.

Activities Under the Sea

Labeled as some of the best cold water diving that can be found, the waters surrounding Vancouver Island are rich in marine life. Sidney is not afraid to take advantage of these claims, and numerous dive charters and schools exist in the tiny town. Nearby wrecks and man-made reefs are home to numerous of these marine creatures, and they make for a fantastic day of underwater exploration.

If the idea of being cold, wet and below the waves all day doesn’t sound appealing, there is also the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. Don’t let this small ecological center fool you by its size – it is loaded with specimens and information about the Salish Sea. Conservation information, plenty of exhibits, touching pools and even a Coast Salish art collection wait to educate visitors. There, you’ll not only learn about the area’s waters and wildlife, but also about the land, culture and people as well. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of Silvia, the resident octopus.

Leisurely Outdoor Activities

Walks, Hikes and Bikes

As far as leisurely activity goes, Sidney is a hotspot. A sculpture and historical walking tour take guests along the waterfront. A trail of new facts and the stunning view lead the way. The Lochside Trail runs nearby, which is a perfect destination for those on two wheels, or who are looking to enjoy a scenic jog. As a bonus, the Sidney Spit is another local gem just 25-minutes away by boat. Once there, you will find yourself inside a unique National Park with pristine beaches and a number of hiking trails to enjoy.

Gardens and Golfing

Sharing the same temperate climate as Victoria means the numerous gardens and golf courses the two areas share are constantly open and in blossom. Visit any of the golf courses for a round nearly any time of the year. If you prefer greenery in the form of gardens to golf courses, the Butchart Gardens are a quick, 20-minute drive away from downtown Sidney. Well worth a visit, the Butchart Gardens always have something on display and are an infamous, household name.

The Sidney Night Market

While quaint and quiet by day, the town turns into a bustling festival hotspot on summer Thursday nights during the Sidney Night Market. With 150+ local vendors selling anything and everything your heart could possibly desire, there’s something for everyone. Wander Beacon Avenue to the sound of music, the scent of tasty artisan goods, bask in the glow of the lights and taste test to your stomach’s content. The night market is a summer highlight that demands to be attended should your trip overlap with the season. You may not have a choice; after all, it completely shuts down the main street.

Shopping and Other Activities

Unleash your inner bookworm in Sidney’s Booktown. Twelve bookstores exist within a four-block radius, right in the middle of the quaint town. Each is unique and you’re guaranteed to find the perfect read for your traveling downtime. Booktown was established in 1996 and is one of just a few that exists in the entire world! It also has the title of Canada’s only booktown in existence. Aside from books, the two main streets, Bevan Avenue and Beacon Avenue, are riddled with cute boutiques and other options. They’ll surely satisfy any desire to shop-till-you-drop.

Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries

Sidney is tucked into the coast of the Saanich Peninsula, which is called home by more than a few local wineries, breweries, a distillery and even a cidery. Their tasting rooms are constantly open, coaxing visitors in to sip their day away to some of the finest artisan products the area has to offer. Not to mention, most have a stunning view of the ocean. Hop onto a winery or brewery tour to ensure you can kick back and try it all.

15 Things to Do in Sidney BC

Wondering what to do while you’re visiting sidney.

Many boating enthusiasts who come to the Pacific Northwest from far and wide to take in the area’s stunning scenery make a point of stopping in Sidney by the Sea – a seaside community in British Columbia, Canada.

Sidney is located at the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The small town is where we here at Van Isle Marina call home.

Sometimes referred to as the gateway to Vancouver Island, Sidney is home to around 11,500 residents and is a popular tourist destination,

especially during the spring and summer months. It also happens to be the only Canadian port-of-call in the Washington State Ferries system, with ferries running from Sidney to the San Juan Islands and Anacortes. Sidney is also just minutes away from the Victoria International Airport and Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal.

If you are planning a trip to Vancouver Island , our friendly Van Isle Marina staff recommend checking out the following attractions in Sidney, BC.

Waterfront Walkway

After you’ve experienced Sidney’s waterfront from your yacht, Sidney’s waterfront walkway is the next best way to fully experience the town’s beautiful shoreline. Along the 3.6-km walkway, you’ll find Beacon Park and the start of the Sidney Seaside Sculpture Walk that ambles south towards the Sidney International Ferry Terminal. On this self-guided tour, stop to take pictures of the public art and sculptures, such as the Board Dog, Eye of the Ocean, and Double Spinner.

Sidney Pier

Along the waterfront walkway in Sidney, you’ll also happen upon the town’s iconic fisherman’s pier  where you will be able to grab a bite to eat or visit the fish market. Why not stay a while, cast a line, and see if anything bites? The pier in Sidney is also a popular spot for crab fishing.

Sidney is an excellent place to stock up on books for your boat! With its five independent bookstores, Sidney is known as Canada’s only “Booktown” . Each of Sidney’s independently owned bookshops has a unique identity and focal point, with experts behind the counter who have put together special collections of thousands of titles to choose from.

Lochside Trail

Sidney is conveniently located on the  Lochside Trail  a 29-kilometre multi-use path that connects the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal to Victoria, where it connects with the Galloping Goose Trail. A great way to experience the Lochside Trail is to rent a bike in Sidney to head out on this trail that was formerly a railway line. You’ll zip past beaches and farmland, while exploring the suburban countryside.

BC Aviation Museum

For aviation enthusiasts, the British Columbia Aviation Museum is open seven days a week and features several aircraft and artifacts related to the history of aviation in Canada, with an emphasis on BC aviation history. The museum displays restored aircraft, engines, and pictures, photos and videos in addition to memorials of key figures of aviation history.

Sidney Museum

The Sidney Museum  features 8,000 artifacts and regularly updated permanent displays on local First Nations, industry, transportation, agriculture, and social history. Displays include a vintage kitchen, a vintage storefront, a rustic barn and a hands-on schoolhouse. In addition to its permanent exhibits, the Sidney Museum also features temporary exhibits. A schedule can be found on their website.

Wines, Beers & Ciders

In and around Sidney, there are numerous vineyards and distillers around to help quench your thirst, including Victoria Distillers’ new waterfront distillery in Sidney, the Sea Cider Far & Cider House in Saanichton, the Roost Vineyard Bistro in North Saanichton, and Deep Cove Winery , also in North Saanichton.

Roberts Bay

Enjoy an afternoon of hiking and birdwatching at Robert’s Bay and the Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary . You can birdwatch from your boat , or moor with us at Van Isle Marina  and walk over to explore the area on foot. Other nearby sites include Island View Beach and Horth Hill Regional Park.

Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea Aquarium

The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea  on Sidney’s waterfront is a world-class, hands-on aquarium featuring 160 species of marine life, a marine mammal artifact exhibit, and a Coast Salish art collection. It’s a great attraction for kids and adults alike with an events calendar that includes everything from children’s activities to informative lectures and workshops about the Salish Sea.

Downtown Shopping

Be sure to leave time to explore all of downtown Sidney, where there are plenty of boutique shops featuring the work of local artisans and crafters. Enjoy an afternoon of strolling through each shop for some truly unique finds. Sidney shops offer something for everyone, whether you’re looking for special artwork for your boat, gifts for your loved ones, or functional items for your home.

Sidney Street Market

The Sidney Street Market has been going strong since 1999! If you’re lucky enough to be in Sidney on a Thursday evening between June and August, be sure to make your way downtown and stock up on fresh ingredients and local crafts from Island vendors.

Sidney Spit

Sidney Spit , located on the north end of Sidney Island,  is part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. The area features stunning sandy beaches, wooded trails, and a host of birds and wildlife. There are campsites, dock spaces, and mooring buoys for overnight stays. Get there in your powerboat or kayak , or use the walk-on ferry service that provides access to the Island from May to September.

Sidney Whale Watching

The calm waters near Sidney make the region an excellent place for whale watching. Watch from the privacy of your own boat, or book through Sidney Whale Watching .

BC Boat Show & Other Annual Events

Sidney hosts a wide range of annual events throughout the year, including the 2019 BC Boat Show in May, where members of the Van Isle Marina team will be offering tours of our boats. Check Sidney’s featured events calendar to see what else will be happening in town during your trip.

Van Isle Marina & Sea Glass Waterfront Grill

As a bonus item on our list of Things to Do in Sidney, BC, we thought we might as well include ourselves! Take a walk on our docks and check out all the boats we have moored here. While you’re here, we hope you also check out the Sea Glass Waterfront Grill , which serves up contemporary west coast dining.

The boating experts here at Van Isle Marina are very familiar with Sidney, and we would love to answer any questions you might have about the town itself, and how to navigate to nearby communities and attractions, whether by car or boat. We look forward to welcoming you to our docks and the quaint seaside region we call home.
