Long story short ! We wanted to cancel the flights, customer rep from cancellation team quoted the airline charges and their cancellation fee (AUD 150 per per person). We agreed on their terms without any problems and asked them to call back in few days. Contacted them again and now the same consultant quoted the same amount but in USD. Asked him that why the amount is changed to USD now while we paid the tickets in AUD. He said, "it was my mistake" !! Won't get any help, any answer from them. Absolutely pathetic customer service ! This company is dodgy , reason behind - when I called the airlines , they could not locate the booking ref number in their system which was given by Best and Less. Also, they requested us to change the dates after few days of booking which we gladly accepted without asking any questions. And when we needed help from them, there was very poor response. I am going to report it to Consumer Affairs shortly. Clearly, I can understand now why they have received more "terrible" reviews here and on other websites than "excellent" If you are reading this before booking the flights with them, think twice and save yourself.

I spoke with Anny this afternoon, asking for a quote. I emailed her a detailed itinerary, as mine is a multi-destination trip. She called me back saying she can't understand my email, which is the same email I am using to get quotes from other travel agent, and they do not have any issues with understanding the email. Anny called me back, with a very rude and unfriendly telephone manner. After I explained to her so she can have better understanding of my itinerary, she hung up on me. Very rude. I emailed her back and now telling the www that rude people/employee like Anny have no right answering the phone and dealing with customer service. She should perhaps attend more studies so she can better understand simple English and take simple readings on customer service and telephone manners I should have read earlier negative reviews from Google and other sites about how other people experiences dealing with them- which are all negative.

good customer service but if you want to change dates they will treat it as buying a new ticket cathey pacific airlines says they will change dates and do price match with any travel agent, i think it is better buying direct from airways, as best and less is not supporting once the ticket is purchased. I do understand that it's bussy period the prices will be high but, they want us to pay full payment for new tickets and only return small amount from around 900 will be back. i saw the feedback@best.. email and sent a mail with no reply back, . apart from all it is not fair that we would have able to change dates with a fee instead of no change because of best and less travels greed.

The traditional home of the Gadigal people of the Eora Aboriginal Nation, Sydney has evolved from a humble British penal colony founded in 1788 to a thriving port city.

Today, nearly half of Sydney's residents, known as "Sydneysiders," were born overseas. The city’s rich cultural makeup is now reflected in its diverse food scene, where just about every major international cuisine is represented in increasingly creative ways.

Among the city's most recognizable attractions are the iconic Sydney Opera House, with its distinctive white "sails," and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, affectionately known as the "coat hanger." But there is plenty more to love about this showstopping waterside metropolis.

Sydney's moderate climate and variety of beaches and parks make it ideal for outdoor activities, and an ever-expanding roster of luxury hotels offer plenty of options to lay your head at the end of each day.

Sydney's long-running obsession with artisan coffee makes it easy to find a perfect brew. Some claim the flat white (espresso with steamed milk and only a thin layer of cream) was first served in Sydney.

In general, visitors will find that prices are high in Australia compared to the U.S. (outside New York City, at least), including in Sydney. However, tipping is not customary or expected in Australia where tax and service are included in the bill by law, and minimum wages are higher than in the U.S. For excellent service in restaurants, taxis, hotels, and tours, you may wish to add 10-20 percent as a "thank you."

Retailers that sell alcoholic beverages in Australia are called "bottle shops," and a standard glass of beer is called a "schooner." Smoking is banned in all indoor public spaces and certain outdoor areas, including beaches, national parks, and public transport stops.

Sydney has some of the world’s best tap water; plastic bottled water is available, but frowned upon.

The Opal card can be used on all public transport, including trains, ferries, buses, and light rail.

Sydney Buses : Buses connect all areas of the city, including those without rail or ferry transport. NightRide services replace most train routes between midnight and 4 a.m.

Sydney Trains : Six of Sydney’s eight trains run through the city center, including the line to Sydney Airport. The main terminus for local and regional trains is Central Station at Railway Square. Maps and timetables are available at Transport NSW.

Regional Trains : Departing from Central Station, regional trains and coaches service destinations that include the NSW South Coast, Blue Mountains, and Central Coast.

Sydney Light Rail : Sydney’s three light rail lines run through the city center, providing easy access to Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, and beyond.

Sydney Ferries : From Circular Quay ferry terminal in the CBD, ferries offer a scenic and convenient option for traveling to Manly Beach, Taronga Zoo, and attractions beyond.

The Rocks and Circular Quay : Sydney’s first neighborhood, The Rocks still features cobblestone streets and plenty of colonial-era buildings, among them several characterful pubs. Adjoining this historic area, the buzzy ferry hub of Circular Quay is home to the Sydney Opera House and Museum of Contemporary Art.

Darling Harbour : This waterside neighborhood — home to the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, Imax, Madame Tussauds, Australian National Maritime Museum, and a variety of dining and entertainment options — is ideal for families. A number of Sydney Harbour sightseeing cruises depart from here, too.

Central Business District (CBD) : Skyscrapers shoot upwards from the heart of the city, also home to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and the lion’s share of Sydney’s art galleries, museums, theaters, and hotels. Previously not much of a culinary destination, the area’s bars and restaurants are now among the city’s best.

Eastern Suburbs : Stretching from the eastern edge of the CBD to the golden sands of Bondi Beach, Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs are dotted with some of the city's finest restaurants, with key dining and nightlife neighborhoods including Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Potts Point, and Bondi Beach.

Northern Beaches : The scenic 30-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay to Manly, at the southern tip of the city's Northern Beaches, is a quintessential Sydney experience (whale sightings are common during the winter months). Manly is also the dining and nightlife hub of the Northern Beaches, which stretches for more than 18 miles, ending at Palm Beach.

Sydney has a humid subtropical climate, with rain spread fairly evenly through the year for a total annual rainfall of about 47 inches. In general, the weather is mild.

Summer (December-February) temperatures reach the high 70s, with humidity in the 60 to 70 percent range. Autumn (March-May) sees less humidity and comfortable temperatures. In winter (June-August), temperatures fall as low as the mid-40s and rainfall is higher. Spring (September-November) becomes warmer with less humidity than summer.

July is the coolest month, and January is generally the hottest. August and September are the driest months of the year.

How to Enjoy Sydney on a Budget: Our Best Tips

Expensive but possible on a budget, Sydney is spectacular for its natural beauty, enviable for a fun, relaxed culture, and relatively easy for solo travelers.

Sydney is a culture hound's heaven and a natural gateway to Australia. It's situated on the largest natural harbor in the world, offering miles of coastline and beaches. The Blue Mountains are about two hours away by train for dramatic hiking trails and small town exploring.

This post will help you eat, sleep, and explore Sydney on a budget. And the timing for the post is right – New Year's Eve is coming soon and Sydney is one of the best places in the world to celebrate. Sydney is known for its fantastic fireworks display over Sydney Harbour .

Best Time to Visit Sydney

Because I don't like humid heat, I try to avoid Sydney in January and February. However, if that's your thing, it's a great time to go. December, the first month of summer is only slightly cooler but worth the heat for things like the holiday season and New Year's fireworks. Fall, winter, and spring are all quite comfortable during the day and drop down during the night. June, July, and August are the coolest months ranging from 17°C (63°F) during the day to 9°C (48°F) overnight.

Getting Around Sydney on the Cheap: Public Transport and More

• Take public transit. To turn Sydney into budget Sydney, start by taking public transit. From ferries crisscrossing the harbor to an extensive subway system to buses, public transit is, after walking, the cheapest way to get around.
• Use your Opal Card to save more . An Opal Card is the tap pass you can use to pay for public transit in Sydney. You can buy an adult pass at most convenience stores and newsagents. You tap in and tap out every time you use transit. With the Opal Card there is a cap on how much you pay: $17.80 a day, $50 a week, or $8.90 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Plus, there's a 30% discount when traveling on weekends, public holidays, and outside of the peak times. Get the full details here .
• A harbor tour for about US$5.00. Tour Sydney Harbour by the ferry transit. Join locals who use the ferry to get around and get a tour of the harbor at the same time.
• The Harbour Bridge north to Kirribilli and Blues Point which includes the Secret Garden.
• The Harbour Bridge south to the Sydney Opera House (currently celebrating 50 years), The Royal Botanic Gardens , and Art Gallery of NSW .
• The Harbour Bridge south to The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Rocks for shopping (markets Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

Sydney on a Budget: Cheap and Free Things to Do

• Sydney Greeters . Whatever your interests, with luck, you’ll get a volunteer tour guide who shares them and will show you their beloved Sydney.
• I'm Free Tours of Sydney . Free tours but it’s important to tip – I think $5 is the minimum.
• Government House . Guided tours run every 30 minutes from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The tour takes 45 minutes and is free. Check the website for occasional closures. Identity such as a passport is required.
• Sydney iVenture Card . The  Ultimate Sydney Attractions Pass  will save you money on a variety of attractions from the Sydney Opera House to jet boating.  This link takes you to a full range of Sydney activities .
• The Museum of Contemporary Art  offers free entry to their permanent collection. I like it because it focuses on local artists.
• The Maritime Museum . The permanent collection was free but it seems now there is a charge. It's still an interesting museum that should be considered.
• The Art Gallery of New South Wales . Almost everything is free and it's right near the Botanical Gardens, which are also free.
• The Queen Victoria Building.  This isn't a museum but rather a stunning historical building turned into a high-end shopping mall. Go to level 3 to watch the clock chime on the hour.
• The Sydney Opera House.  Tickets to the opera in Sydney are somewhat more affordable than in many cities. But there is so much more that goes on at the Opera House, from small lectures to comedians. It's really worth  checking out their schedule while you're there. If you want, you can simply take a tour of this fabulous building .
• Manly Beach
• Balmoral Beach
• Bondi Beach

• Go hiking in the Blue Mountains.  Go on a Sunday and the trip will be just $2.50 return. Read  Beyond Sydney: Bushwalking in the Blue Mountains .
• Top of the Shangri-la . It's free to enter, buy a drink or not, and enjoy the view of Sydney Harbour. It's especially dazzling at night.
• Top of the Old Clare Hotel.  When you're in Chippendale, maybe grabbing a meal at Spice Alley, go to the pool/bar at the top of the Old Clare Hotel for a cold drink.

Traveler Recommended Things to Do In and Near Sydney, Australia

Dayle – Definitely catch a train down to the Illawarra, Wollongong and Kiama area. Lots of beaches, ocean pools, and walks that are totally free and not as busy as Sydney itself.

Tracy – for a short stay you can do the BridgeClimb of Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was super fun and not as difficult as it may seem. I was 63 when I did it and I was just fine! You can also go to the Taronga Zoo and take in a concert at the Sydney Opera House.

Annette – To explore Sydney on a budget, catch the train to Cronulla then the ferry to Bundeena for a beach day. Or walk along the footpath to Bass and Flinders Point. Or both would be better! You can take the ferry from Circular Quay to Watson’s Bay then walk to South Head for great Harbour views. If you’re into art, there is a great little gallery at Gymea (by train) called Hazlehurst, which has some interesting exhibitions and a good cafe.

Helen – If you have a long haul flight, go straight to Coogee Beach and stay for a few days to recover from any jet lag. The sea air and relaxed vibes work wonders.

Julia – Book a tour of Cockatoo Island. Or, go in winter (late May-mid June) when VIVID is taking place. This festival of lights is a real stunner and much of it is free.

Affordable Dining Options on a Budget in Sydney

• Save on tipping . Tipping is appreciated but not necessarily expected. If you want to tip, 10-15% is considered generous, which is certainly less than in North America. It should be noted that the wait staff is generally better paid in Australia than North America.
• BYO and save . Many restaurants in Sydney allow you to bring in your own wine. They'll likely charge you a corkage fee of $1.50 to $3.50 per head or per bottle. Here's a list of 60 .
• Pack a lunch from a specialty store or market. The beach is a big thing in Sydney as are parks and gardens as noted above. Pack a lunch from one of the many specialty food stores or markets and have a picnic in the fabulous outdoors.
• The Rocks – The Rocks Markets  are held every Saturday and Sunday for great “art, beats and eats”.
• Kirribilli – Pizzeria Rio, Fitzroy Street.
• Blues Point – The Point Deli, Blue Point Road.
• Chippendale – Spice Alley has a wide variety of Asian cuisine in a really fun space.
• Seafood is a must in Sydney . Go to the  Sydney Fish Market  to see the mongers selling their wares and enjoy a fabulous selection of fresh sushi and other delectables for lunch.

Best Places to Stay in Sydney on a Budget

Sydney Harbour YHA The Sydney Harbour in the Rocks YHA Hostel has a great location in a central area in the city with many things that you will want to see and do nearby. The hostel’s rooftop and BBQ area feature a stunning view of the city, the harbor, and the iconic Opera House. The hostel is only a few years old and is quite modern inside. There is a large kitchen for guests with lots of storage space for food. Each bed has its own light and power plug and each bed has its own large-sized locker with a shelf for smaller items. Inside each locker there is also another power plug so you can charge your devices while they are securely locked away.

Sydney Boulevard Hotel For its location in the Sydney central business district you really can't beat the price. You can walk to many of the major Sydney attractions from this hotel, and if you can't, several bus and train stations are within a 5-10 minute walk as well. It's clean, the staff are friendly, it has great restaurants (although a bit pricey at times), and if you want to pay a bit extra for a harbor view room, the view is amazing!

But if you’re staying in Sydney for longer than a few days, you may want to take some day trips outside the city. 

The areas of NSW that surround Sydney are packed with natural beauty and fun activities like hiking, camping, wine-tasting, and more.

There are some stunning sights to see, from the famous Sea Cliff Bridge , to the rich green hills of the Southern Highlands , to the chalky white cliffs of the Royal National Park .

How to get around on the best day trips from Sydney?

For most of these day trips from Sydney, having a car and driving yourself is the best way to get around. You’ll get to your destination faster than public transport, and you’ll have more freedom and flexibility.

However, not everyone has a car or wants to rent one in Sydney.

Where possible, I’ll mention how to get to each day trip destination using public transport. Sydney has an excellent train system that can take you to places like the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, and the South Coast of NSW.

I’ll also include some guided tours that are available to cover all your transport for the day. For places like the Hunter Valley a tour is recommended as there is no direct public transport and you’ll want to indulge in lots of wine!

15 Best Day Trips From Sydney, Australia

If you’re wondering “where should I go within 2 hours of Sydney?”, all of these day trip destinations around New South Wales are 2 hours away from Sydney or less.

At the end I’ll include my two favorite weekend trips from Sydney. They are 2.5 hours away, which is a bit much to do in one day.

All of these day trips I’ve done myself, and can highly recommend them to all other travelers in Australia !

1. The Blue Mountains National Park

• Distance from Sydney: 1-2 hours, depending where you go in the national park
• Public Transport: Blue Mountains Train Line from Central Station, get off at Leura, Wentworth Falls, Katoomba, or Blackheath
• Recommended tour: Blue Mountains day trip from Sydney

Can you do the Blue Mountains as a day trip from Sydney? Absolutely, and I’ve done it many times.

The rugged mountain range of Blue Mountains National Park is one of the most popular day trips from the city. It’s only an hour west of central Sydney, and you can either drive or catch the train to Katoomba (one of the main towns in the Blue Mountains). 

Once you arrive is this beautiful area, there are so many fun things to do. 

Go hiking , swim in waterfalls, and hit some of the viewpoints that overlook majestic mountains and valleys. Also, check out the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden or visit Scenic World.

Pulpit Rock Walking Track , Hanging Rock , and Empress Falls are some of my favorite spots in the Blue Mountains.

2. The Southern Highlands

• Distance from Sydney: 1.5 hours
• Public Transport: Southern Highlands Train Line from Central Station, get off at Bowral
• Recommended Tour: Southern Highlands and South Coast Private Tour

This lush area of natural beauty and rural charm is one of my favorite day trips from Sydney. 

Rolling green hills, vineyards, waterfalls , and small towns are scattered all over the Southern Highlands.

Some of the best things to do in the Southern Highlands are wine-tasting , wading in the natural pools on top of the massive Carrington Falls , and enjoying the view from the Hindmarsh Lookout near Belmore Falls . 

Be sure to stop by the towns of Bowral and Robertson as well. They have some nice quiet and adorable local shops and cafes. 

Also nearby is Kangaroo Valley , a similarly lush and beautiful area. It’s a bit further south from the Highlands, but it also has lots of waterfalls and hikes, and you can kayak on the Kangaroo River. If you have time, definitely consider checking out Kangaroo Valley as well.

3. Symbio Wildlife Park

• Distance from Sydney: 1 hour
• Public Transport: Train from Central Station to Helensburgh Station, then take Bus #15 to Symbio Wildlife Park

For travelers in Sydney who want to see some Australian wildlife , this is an amazing place to go.

Symbio Wildlife Park is just over an hour south of the city and is one of the best day trips from Sydney, Australia.

This family-owned business is home to lots of native Australian animals, including koalas, kangaroos, wombats, and more. Animals are all treated with the highest level of respect and care. 

4. Kiama 

• Distance from Sydney: 1 hour and 45 minutes
• Public Transport: Take the South Coast Train Line from Central Station in Sydney to Kiama
• Recommended Tour: Southern Highlands and South Coast Tour

Kiama is a truly gorgeous town at the end of the Grand Pacific Drive .

Aside from stunning coastal walks and a quaint town center, Kiama is best known for its two blowholes. 

The Kiama Blowhole is a cavern of jagged coastal rock. When water rushes into the hole at high tide, it then shoots upwards out of the rocks like an erupting volcano.  The Little Blowhole is the same, just a bit smaller. 

Both are cool natural phenomenons to witness. Try to visit during stormy weather when there’s lots of swell so you can see the blowholes in all their glory!

5. Royal National Park

• Distance from Sydney: 40 minutes
• Public Transport: South Coast train Line to Otford, or you can take the ferry from Cronulla to Bundeena
• Recommended Tour: Private day trip from Sydney to Royal National Park

As one of the most common day trips from Sydney, this huge national park is located directly south of the city. 

The opportunities for adventure are endless in the Royal National Park. 

Complete the Royal Coast Walking Track and admire the dramatic white cliffs. Or float in the naturally symmetrical Figure 8 Pools . 

Surf at Garie Beach or cliff-jump at Wattamolla . Go camping, hiking, swimming, and more!

6. Bouddi National Park

• Public Transport: You can take the train to the Central Coast but you’d have to catch a few different buses to make it to Bouddi National Park. You’re better off just driving.

This beautiful and peaceful national park is a great way to escape the crowds of Sydney.

Drive north of the city about 2 hours and you’ll reach the Central Coast Region . Then head towards the coast and you’ll reach Bouddi National Park.

There are 3 beachside campgrounds in Bouddi National Park that make for an enriching stay in nature.

The highlight of the park is the Bouddi Coastal Walk . It crosses over beaches and bush, and you’ll get to see some amazing coastal views.

7. Wine Tasting in the Hunter Valley

• Distance from Sydney: 3 hours (better suited to a weekend trip but can be done in a day!)
• Public transport: None that is direct, your best option is driving or booking a tour (book a tour if you want to drink lots of wine and not have to drive)
• Recommended Tour: Hunter Valley day trip from Sydney with wine and cheese tasting

Going wine tasting in the Hunter Valley is a super fun day trip from Sydney. You can either visit an urban winery in the city for a more local experience, or take a day trip out to the Hunter Valley.

Hunter Valley is one of the most famous wine making areas of Australia, and it’s about a 3 hour drive from Sydney.

So it’s quite a hike to get out there, but it can be done in a day. You can book an organized tour that covers your transport and ensures you have an amazing experience in the Hunter Valley! Plus, a tour means you can drink all the wine you want without driving as there is no direct public transport back to Sydney.

8. Kelly’s Falls

• Public Transport: You can take the South Coast Train Line to Helensburgh and then get a taxi

Located near Symbio Wildlife Park, this majestic woodland paradise is hidden from most tourists . It’s rather difficult to find, but worth the adventure.

If you leave Symbio Wildlife Park and head east on Lawrence Hargrave Drive , you’ll see a small sign on the side of the road indicating Kelly’s Falls.

There is a small picnic area, and a walking track that leads to the top of the main waterfall.

You can venture off the walkway and climb down a steep and difficult-to-find trail that will lead you to the bottom of the falls.

Here you get the best view, and you can even walk through the woods to a second waterfall. This is the type of place you should visit with someone who knows the way, as it is a bit obscure and not well marked!

9. Wollongong

• Public Transport: South Coast Train Line from Central Station in Sydney to Wollongong

This small city about an hour south of Sydney is incredible. 

Wollongong is home to lots of university students, young working adults, and travelers. So it has a very multicultural and vibrant community. 

You can check out the art gallery , browse through the local street markets on Thursdays and Fridays, or indulge in the nightlife . 

In addition to the culture and cuisine of Wollongong, you can visit the beaches , hike the nearby Mount Kiera , relax in the Botanic Gardens , or go for a bike ride along the coastal path. 

Also consider driving just 15 minutes away to visit Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere .

10. Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park and Palm Beach

• Public Transport: Take the ferry to Manly then catch Bus #199 to Palm Beach (or just skip the ferry and take public bus the whole way)

This is the second oldest national park in Australia , after the Royal National Park.

Here you’ll find lots of hiking trails, wildlife, aboriginal art, and beautiful nature. Situated on the Hawkesbury River , there are lots of natural attractions in the area.

Go for a swim at Pearl Beach , kayak down the Hawkesbury River, or visit the nearby Brisbane Water National Park for more waterfalls and hikes.

Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park is just an hour north of the city, so it’s one of the easiest Sydney day trips.

Also nearby is Palm Beach , an affluent coastal town of Sydney just west of the park. Here you can embark on a short walk to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse and enjoy some incredible views. After the hike, spend the day walking around the scenic Palm Beach area.

Combining the second oldest national park in Australia with the beautiful Palm Beach is one of the best Sydney day trip ideas!

11. Killalea State Park

• Public Transport: South Coast Train Line to Albion Park then Taxi or Uber (no direct train available)

For a fun day of surfing, swimming, and sunbathing, Killalea State Park is a fantastic day trip from Sydney, Australia. 

Also known as The Farm , this local surfing reserve consists of a gorgeous beach with golden sand and turquoise water. 

Soft green hills surround the beach, and small tide pools sit at the edges of the sand. The long beach has small, easy waves for beginner surfers and bigger waves for more advanced surfers.

• Distance from Sydney: 2 hours
• Public Transport: South Coast Train Line to Berry

Berry is a quaint, historic town that is one of the best day trips from Sydney, Australia.

If you’re taking a day trip to Killalea State Park or Kiama, Berry isn’t too far away so you could stop here as well. 

There isn’t tons to do in Berry besides walk through the small town, admire the adorable shops, and chill out in one of the rustic cafes. 

The highlight of Berry is the famous Berry Donut Van . This little takeaway shop sells delicious, fluffy cinnamon donuts that are well-loved on the South Coast of NSW. It’s worth stopping in Berry just for the donuts!

13. Dharawal National Park

• Distance from Sydney: 1 hour and 20 minutes
• Public Transport: None that gets you close enough, you’re better off driving

For forests, waterfalls, wildlife, and untouched natural beauty, visit Dharawal National Park.

It’s only just over an hour drive southwest of the city so it’s one of the quickest and easiest day trips from Sydney.

This park is home to the traditional land of the Dharawal Aboriginal people , and there are still some remnants of the land’s ancestors, like drawings.

My favorite thing to do in Dharawal National Park is visit on a hot summer day and hike to a swimming hole.

The Jingga Walking Track and Minerva Pool Walking Track both reward hikers with large natural freshwater swimming holes.

14. Grand Pacific Drive

• Distance from Sydney: 30 minutes – 2 hours depending how long you follow the route for
• Public Transport: The South Coast Train Line stops at all the towns along the way but driving yourself allows you to take your time and soak in all the views
• Recommended Tour: Wildlife, Waterfalls, and Wine Small Group Tour

If I had to recommend just one day trip from Sydney, it would be this one.

If you drive south of Sydney along the coastal route, you’ll find yourself on the Grand Pacific Drive. This road actually stretches all the way to Kiama, but you can follow it for as long as you like. 

The most popular sight on this route is the Sea Cliff Bridge ; a huge cliffside bridge that sticks out over the ocean.

There are also a few hikes through the Illawarra Escarpment where you can get a good workout and enjoy beautiful views over the coastline. My favorite is the Sublime Hiking Trail in Thirroul. 

Gorgeous beaches, nice cafes, and coastal walking and biking trains line this whole coastline. 

So spend a day exploring along the Grand Pacific Drive. It’s one of the best trips from Sydney as it’s just over an hour away and it’s packed with beauty. 

15. Stanwell Park 

• Public Transport: South Coast Train Line to Stanwell Park

At the northern end of the Grand Pacific Drive lies Stanwell Park, another one of the best day trips from Sydney. 

This quiet town is most well known for its large beach that is fun for swimming, surfing, and relaxing. 

Just north of Stanwell Park is Bald Hill , an amazing lookout point that provides sweeping views of Stanwell Park beach and the surrounding hills. 

You can also head just south of Stanwell Park to Coalcliff and hike the Wodi Wodi Trail . This bushwalk only takes about 30 minutes and offers incredible views from the summit. 

Bonus: 2 Best Weekend Trips From Sydney

(can also be day trips from sydney).

These next two destinations in NSW are about 2.5 hours away from Sydney. So it is possible to visit them as day trips, though that’s about 5 hours of driving to do in one day.

These are two of the most beautiful places in NSW in my opinion. If you’re short on time, you can see them in one day if you start early!

But I recommend spending at least 1 night and 2 days in these spots so you can really enjoy everything without rushing.

#1 Best Weekend Trip From Sydney: Port Stephens

Distance from Sydney: 3 hours

Port Stephens is a quiet and peaceful destination that makes a great weekend or day trip from Sydney.

The coastline here is surprisingly rugged. There are many mountains, hills, inlets, bays, sand dunes, and islands, making it an incredibly scenic spot.

Visit one of the many beaches, including Fingal Bay, Zenith Beach, and Wreck Beach.

The best thing to do in Port Stephens is hike Tomaree Mountain . It’s only a 30-minute climb and provides an amazing view of the hilly coastline. I recommend going at sunrise for beautiful lighting!

Also consider a boat tour or snorkeling in the waters of Great Lakes Marine Park or going sandboarding down the Stockton Sand Dunes.

#2 Best Weekend Trip From Sydney: Jervis Bay

Jervis Bay is 3 hours south of central Sydney. This coastal area is also very peaceful and relaxing and is packed with picturesque beaches.

Completing the White Sands Coastal Walk is the best way to see all the best spots; you’ll weave in and out of the bush and stop at amazing beaches.

The 7 Best Hotels in Sydney

Sydney is where most travelers start their trip to Australia . It’s the country’s largest city (almost 20% of the entire population lives here), boasting incredible beaches, a fun nightlife, and lots of museums and galleries.

I’ve been visiting the city since 2007 and always have an amazing time. Sydney is gorgeous and I never get tired of admiring the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. But while the city has plenty to keep you busy , it is a bit spread out. That means picking the right place to stay is important.

Over the years, I’ve stayed at countless hotels. There’s a lot in the city and picking one can be overwhelming. Here’s my list of the best hotels in Sydney:

1. Mercantile Hotel

A mid-range hotel, the rooms here are simple, minimalist, and practical. While it’s not super arty or unique, the rooms are large and the beds are comfortable. There’s free Wi-Fi, AC, and a coffee/tea maker in each room too. The bathrooms, while small, are well-kept and everything is in good condition. There’s no breakfast available, but there are lots of options nearby. The emphasis here is more on location than amenities, but you still get good value. It’s the best place to stay in The Rocks on a budget.

2. Coogee Bay Boutique Hotel

Breakfast is served at the hotel’s beachside bar and grill, and the hotel also has an art-deco style cocktail bar and sports bar. If you have a vehicle, there’s private parking too (which is rare in the city). If you want a quieter, more relaxing stay, this is the hotel for you.

3. Crystalbrook Albion

Each room is unique, but all are bright and airy, with lots of natural light. The beds are large and comfy, and rooms also have flatscreen TVs, desks, coffee/tea makers, and plush bathrobes. The bathrooms are also spacious and bright, with large rain showers and boutique design touches like colorfully tiled walls. There’s a cool rooftop terrace too, and the breakfast each morning includes lots of fresh pastries. I think this is a gorgeous, stylish hotel, perfect if you want to splash out.

4. Glasgow Arms Hotel

The rooms, while not particularly large, are bright and have lots of natural light. There’s a desk, flatscreen TV, and free Wi-Fi in each. The bathrooms are on the smaller side but have nice showers with great water pressure. Everything is clean and comfortable, making this a good choice for travelers looking for value and simplicity.

5. The Darling at The Star

The rooms are large and spacious, with lots of natural light. They have a sleek, modern design and feature tons of perks, including flatscreen TVs, minibars, desks, plush bathrobes, and Egyptian cotton sheets. The bathrooms are also bright and spacious, with marble features and huge bathtubs. If you want luxury in the heart of the city, this is the hotel for you.

6. Hotel Bondi

While the hotel itself isn’t anything to write home about, the price for the location is fantastic. After all, Bondi Beach is right across the street!

7. Sydney Potts Point

It’s not super fancy place, but everything is well-maintained and there’s even some art in each room. I like that everything feels modern and clean here.

9 Charming Small Towns Less Than Two Hours From Sydney

These picturesque towns come with excellent markets, scenic lookouts and stunning architecture.

Dotted across NSW are these picture-perfect towns with miles of rolling hills, lush forests, cascading waterfalls and of course, spectacular beaches . There’s a distinct quality to these small towns, maybe because they haven’t succumbed to the madness and rush of their metropolitan counterparts or because they allow us to step into a time warp with cobblestone streets and vintage shops . If you’re looking to get out of the city, add these small towns just under two hours from Sydney to your list.

1. Berrima, Southern Highlands

Berrima is a quiet village in the Southern Highlands full of history and charm. Enjoy a moment of pause in this idyllic spot and sip on its many delicious wines or head to one of its picturesque riverside walks . The Berrima Heritage Walk takes you through the history of the place dating back to the 1830s. As you saunter along Berrima’s main street, you’ll find a number of quaint cafés, antique shops and bakeries lined along the historical village. Other must-do activities include the Berrima River Walk where you can find yourself up close to some adorable platypuses and a visit to the Courthouse Museum .

If your idea of an ideal weekend includes a book, a cosy corner and a drink, you’ll want to add Berkelouw Book Barn to your list. At the century-old bookhouse , you’ll find a number of literary treasures and a quiet space all to yourself. There’s also a winery close at hand which is always a plus. 2. Berry, South Coast NSW

Berry is yet another of those scenic towns with a laidback atmosphere and a tight spirit of community. Located in the Shoalhaven region of the NSW South Coast , Berry provides holidayers with a bit of everything — the coast, the bush, valleys, great eats and everything in between. Head to the Berry Historic Museum and learn more about the town’s history or browse for souvenirs in one of its many heritage shops. Have a lazy afternoon tea at The Berry Tea Shop or indulge your sweet tooth at The Treat Factory . A visit to Berry is also incomplete without a stop at its iconic Donut Van .

If you prefer the outdoors, you’ll want to explore Kangaroo Valley and Jaspers Brush or make your way to The Berry Markets , renowned for their local produce, flowers, breads and cheeses. See our full guide to Berry here .

3. Bowral , Southern Highlands

The Southern Highlands never disappoint, especially Bowral. It’s the ideal town to enjoy nature, a glass of wine and experience a slice of country life.

Cafe hopping in Bowral comes highly suggested with some of the most Instagrammed cafés in NSW located in the town. Trawl for your favourite classic reads at Plantation while enjoying their famed coffee or have high tea at Your Vintage Occasion — a cafe plus vintage emporium and antiques market . Lookouts and walking trails at Mount Gibraltar Reserve, Corbett Gardens and a picnic at Cherry Tree Walk are also worth exploring. Here’s all you need to know about Bowral .

Distance: 1 hour, 45-minute drive from Sydney.

4. Wollombi, Hunter Valley

Situated 29 kilometres southwest of Cessnock, Wollombi might be the Hunter’s best-kept secret. The historic town is a maze of well-preserved streets, pretty cottages and fine country pubs. The town will throw you back to the 19th century with its magnificent architecture . Head to St Michael’s Church, St John’s Church and the Wollombi Endeavour Museum for a little glimpse. And of course, while you’re in the Hunter Valley you can’t not make a pit stop at one of its wine shops .

The Undercliff Winery comes highly recommended for some of the best wine tastings in the region. If you’re visiting around Easter, make sure to stick around for the Wollombi markets, popular for their cheese, jams, breads and of course, wine.

5. Leura, Blue Mountains

Leura is a small town just east of Katoomba and is often hailed as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Blue Mountains. The town also comes with a wide range of attractions to choose from. Head for brunch to the Instagram-famous Sorensen’s Glasshouse or get your fill of Mediterranean cuisine at Leura Garage .

Take a leisurely stroll down the expansive Everglades Gardens which beautifully blend the Australian bush and with European-style landscapes or just walk around taking in the sights. Leura also has a number of fascinating bushwalks . Some to add to your list: Leura Cascades, Gordon Falls, Leura Forest, Sublime Point and Jamison Lookout . There are heaps of warm and pleasant cafes lining the streets and a distinct Edwardian-style charm to the village.

Distance: 1.5-hour drive from Sydney.

6. St Albans, Hawkesbury

The trip to St Albans is as pretty as the town itself. Passing through the outer suburb of Dural, you’ll travel along the Old Northern Road to the village. Have lunch at the delightful Settlers Arms Inn , nestled between mountains and valleys, it serves both amazing pub grub and genuinely great views.

For theatre, entertainment and dining options the Maltings Mall is an ideal option. For sailing, rowing and other activities, water enthusiasts will want to add Stanborough Lakes , a 126-acre water park to their list.

7. Blackheath, Blue Mountains

The quiet town of Blackheath is another gem in the Blue Mountains . And all the best things in the village are free. Anchored by stunning lookouts right from Govetts Leap to Anvil Rock , Blackheath is the place to be for the wild at heart. Lined along its beautiful streets are a number of cafes and galleries along with an exceptional shopping scene.

The Grand Canyon Track is an excellent spot to add to your itinerary with all the rainforest vibes and lush hiking trails.

8. The Entrance, Central Coast

If you’re after coastal towns , The Entrance makes for an excellent day trip. An old favourite amongst Sydneysiders, there are a number of activities to keep you occupied in this lovely seaside town . Beachgoers can swim or surf in the turquoise waters of The Entrance Beach while adventure enthusiasts can cycle the Tuggerah Lake to brilliant views. At the foreshore and high street, you’ll find a number of eateries and pubs along with live music and ice cream parlours. It’s one of two idyllic towns side by side; neighbouring Long Jetty comes with a variety of retro shops and cosy cafes.

9. Terrigal, Central Coast

Living in NSW means being surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And while there’s no dearth of stunning beaches in Sydney, if you’re looking to get away from the maddening crowds, Terrigal on the Central Coast is one of the most easily accessible towns to visit from Sydney. Expect sandy beaches , exciting nightlife and loads of underwater activities .

Worth exploring is the tranquil Terrigal Beach , the Terrigal Haven , a small, sheltered cove across the main beach and its thriving local market scene. Also highly recommended is The Skillion , an iconic landmark with spectacular, gold-from-the-sun views of the town. Absolutely unmissable is the Avoca Beach Theatre which has won a number of accolades for its old-school vibe and nostalgic charm.

Distance: 1.5 hour drive from Sydney.

If you travel frequently and are looking for a card to help you rack up points you can redeem for future travel, this card is a decent option. Additionally, those looking for a way to fill gaps in their points earning strategy will benefit from the flat 1 point per dollar spent on other purchases outside of the main travel categories.

Another great perk the Autograph Journey features is an annual $50 statement credit triggered by an airline purchase of at least $50. You’re also getting an up-to-$100 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit  once every four years along with Priority Pass Select membership. And Chase’s slate of transfer partners allows plenty of opportunity to get the maximum value from your points.

Those looking for elevated earning rates and extensive travel protections should have this card in their wallet. The 50% redemption bonus when you use your points to pay for travel through the Chase portal  is also a nice perk.

Travel vs cash back credit cards

A travel credit card is a card that is geared toward travel spending and a cash-back credit card is a card that earns cash back on purchases made with the card.

Generally, when we are talking about travel credit cards we refer to cards that earn points and miles like the Platinum Card from American Express or the Hilton Honors Aspire card. The Platinum Amex earns transferable points which can be used with any of Amex's travel partners while the Hilton Honors Aspire card only earns Hilton points which can be redeemed at Hilton properties. These cards do not earn cash back on any purchases.

Cash back cards generally offer cash back as a flat rate or feature bonus categories that earn an elevated cash back rate. Select cash-back cards can also be a great travel card such as the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express which offers 3% cash back on transit including rideshare, trains, buses, and more. Even though it is a cash-back card, the Blue Cash Preferred offers an elevated return on select transportation which potentially makes it a solid travel card option.

How do travel credit cards work?

Travel credit cards work like other reward credit cards: They help you earn rewards, primarily points and miles, on your purchases. This section will primarily focus on transferable rewards credit cards, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve and The Platinum Card® from American Express, as they are what are typically considered travel credit cards.

How to earn transferable points

Transferable points credit cards earn points or miles when you make a purchase on the cards. These points and miles can then be transferred to travel partners for rewards like flights, hotel stays and more. Different cards will have different currencies, but they are generally called either “points” or “miles” (depending on the issuer). All transferable reward credit cards, airline credit cards and hotel credit cards will have their own currency that is redeemable for travel rewards. 

Travel cards have varying rates for different purchase categories. For example, the American Express® Gold Card card earns 4 points per dollar spent on restaurants but only 3 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline or Amex Travel. While the Amex Platinum may be a better card for travel as it earns 5 points per dollar spent on flights (booked directly with airline or Amex Travel and up to $500,000 per calendar year), the Amex Gold can be a good addition for Platinum holders who spend a lot of money on dining out.

How to redeem points and miles  

Once you’ve decided on a travel credit card and earned a welcome bonus, it’s time to put those points or miles toward free travel. There are many ways to redeem your rewards with travel credit cards. Many cards feature an online booking portal through which you can use your rewards to book things like flights, hotels and car rentals. Before booking your flight, you should consider doing a  flight portal comparison to ensure you're getting the best redemption. Others allow you to transfer your points or miles to individual loyalty programs. Depending on the redemption, this could unlock even more value.

There are plenty of ways to ensure you don’t make mistakes with your travel rewards . For instance, be sure you do your research with your rewards to get a high-value redemption and make sure your accounts are in good standing so you don’t risk losing them.

It’s up to you to decide whether a specific trip is worth spending your rewards. Some travels are more affordable in cash, but you can always save your points to splurge on a business-class flight to Europe or an overwater bungalow at a luxury resort. 

How to use travel credit card portals  

In the world of travel credit cards, the four major players are American Express, Capital One, Chase and Citi. These issuers also have their own travel portals which can be used to earn and redeem points for travel. 

Some issuers, like Capital One and Chase , offer an incentive to book travel through the bank’s portal but it is not always worth booking through a portal. 

We do not recommend booking hotel travel through card portals as it typically does not honor elite-status benefits or elite-qualifying stay credits. 

Luckily, flights typically allow you to earn bonus points through a card issuer’s portal and with the airline. Keep in mind that this does not apply to all cards. When purchasing in cash, there generally is little variance in booking through a portal or on the airline’s website so if your travel credit card offers incentives to book through the portal , it can be a great way to earn extra points.

Points and miles redemptions will have a fair variance, especially if there are incentives to book through the travel portals. Overall, travel portals can be a great addition to your points redemption journey if properly used. Always remember to compare the price or redemption value of booking through a portal or directly with an airline. 

Booking through a portal may make matters complicated if you ever need to change or cancel your flight.

Types of travel credit cards

Typically, when talking about travel credit cards, we are referring to transfer rewards credit cards, airline credit cards and hotel credit cards. The points and miles world can be confusing for new credit card users but it doesn’t have to be. While transferable rewards cards are arguably the best way to earn points and miles for travel, they can also be incredibly confusing. Fixed-value credit cards and cash-back credit cards are good alternatives for beginners who are looking to get into the travel credit card world.

Fixed-value cards earn points or miles that are always redeemed for the same value. For example, the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card earns points worth 1 cent each. These cards are great for beginners who haven’t quite gotten the hang of maximizing transferable points or casual travelers who are looking for their first travel credit card . Fixed-value credit cards are often the best travel credit cards for beginners. 

As more hotels and airlines move to a dynamic pricing model where award pricing shifts dramatically, fixed-value rewards programs are becoming more popular.

Another great credit card option for casual travelers or credit card beginners is cash-back credit cards. You don’t have to worry about points, transfer partners or maximizing your rewards with these cards. Cash-back cards provide a percentage of cash back on your spending and provide a simple way to save on your upcoming travels.

Travel credit card benefits

Some travel cards offer automatic elite status with various programs when you sign up and can also accelerate the journey to elite airline status by converting points to air miles. If you are loyal to a particular hotel brand, status with that brand will be valuable. You’ll be entitled to room upgrades, resort credits, early check-in, late checkout and more. If you’re not loyal, it won’t. The same goes for elite status with an airline — you’ll get lounge access, upgrades, increased baggage allowance, etc. When comparing the perks of various cards like elite status, be realistic about which ones you will and won’t use.

One of the coveted perks of premium travel credit cards is complimentary airport lounge access. Many premium travel credit cards come with Priority Pass lounge access , a membership that allows access to airport lounges across the world. These lounges are a great place to relax before your flight or have a snack during a long layover. Amenities will vary between lounges but most lounges provide wifi, private seating and refreshments. Be sure to check the priority pass guest policy as many lounges allow you to bring a complimentary guest (or guests).

TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are both expedited screening programs for travelers. TSA PreCheck is reserved for expedited security screening for domestic flights and Global Entry provides expedited customs screening for international travelers when entering the United States. 

The application fee for TSA PreCheck is up to $85 and $100 for Global Entry. If you are approved for the program, the membership is valid for 5 years. Many travel credit cards will offer statement credit for the application .

Generally speaking, you need at least a very good credit score in order to get many popular travel credit cards. According to FICO, the scoring model used by most lenders, this is a score of at least 740. However, there’s no hard-and-fast rule, as each individual credit card issuer looks at a variety of factors in addition to your credit score when deciding whether to approve or decline your application.

Thankfully, there are a number of ways to check your credit score for free , so you can get an idea of where you stand before wasting an application (and a hard inquiry on your credit report) for a card for which you’re unlikely to qualify.
