The music of Bill and Ted 's band, Wyld Stallyns , has created a utopian future society. Rufus now works as teacher at Bill & Ted University . He used the Time Booth to travel back in time to bring historical figures; Thomas Edison , Sir James Martin , Johann Sebastian Bach and Ria Paschelle to the future to teach his students. In one such lesson Chuck De Nomolos , who detested this society, steals the phone booth and sends two robots Evil Bill and Evil Ted back to the late 20th century to prevent Bill and Ted from winning the San Dimas Battle of the Bands . Rufus attempted to stop De Nomolos by leaping after the booth but seemingly becomes lost in the Circuits of Time .

In the present, three years after Bill and Ted first traveled through time, Wyld Stallyns is preparing for the contest. Though Bill and Ted's current fiancées and former 15th-century princesses Elizabeth and Joanna have become skilled musicians, Bill and Ted are still inept. Despite this, the organizer Ms. Wardroe assures them a slot in the contest as the final act. Bill's stepmother Missy divorces his father in favor of Ted's father , who threatens Ted with military school should they fail the Battle of the Bands. Evil Bill and Evil Ted arrive, and the robots eventually replace Bill and Ted, killing them by throwing the two over the side of a cliff at Vasquez Rocks. The robots behave rudely to the princesses and work to ruin the duo's fame.

Bill and Ted's souls are met by Death who challenges them in a game for their souls. Bill and Ted escape after giving Death a " Melvin ". They attempt to alert their families, but their ethereal forms prove difficult, and at one point, are cast down into Hell at a séance held by Missy. In Hell, they are tormented by Satan , made to face their own fears, manifesting as Col Oates , the Easter Bunny , and Granny S Preston , and realize their only escape is to take Death's offer. Taken to Death's chambers, the spirit gives them the option of what game to play. Bill and Ted, to Death's dismay, select modern games like Battleship, Clue and Twister, easily beating Death. Death admits defeat and unwillingly becomes their servant. Bill and Ted recognize they need to locate the smartest person in the universe to help build robots to counter De Nomolos' evil robots. Death escorts the two to Heaven, and with God's help, are directed to an alien named Station who has the ability to split into two identical twins, and readily offers to help Bill and Ted.

Death brings them back to the mortal world, where it is the night of the Battle of the Bands. Bill and Ted take Station to a hardware store, and then race in their van back to the concert while Station constructs good robots. Just as the evil robots take the stage, Bill and Ted arrive, and Station's robots easily defeat the evil ones. De Nomolos appears in the time booth, ready to defeat Bill and Ted himself, and overrides the broadcasting equipment to send the video footage of this to everyone on the planet. The two recognize they can later go back in time to arrange events for De Nomolos to be trapped in the present, aided by Death and Station; though De Nomolos is apparently able to do the same, Bill and Ted gain the upper hand with the explanation that it is only the winners who get to go back, and De Nomolos is arrested by Ted's father, after suffering a "Melvin" at the hands of the Reaper. Ms. Wardroe reveals herself to be a disguised Rufus, having assured Bill and Ted's spot in the concert, and urges them to play.

As Bill and Ted reunite with their fiancées, they realize they are still terrible musicians, and the four use the time booth; though they return immediately, "an intense 16 months of guitar training plus a two-week honeymoon" have passed for them, they have married the princesses, and each is raising a young infant " Little Ted " and " Little Bill ". They begin to perform a stunning rock ballad, joined by Death, Station, and the good robots. The worldwide broadcast set by De Nomolos continues, and Wyld Stallyns' music is played across the globe, creating harmony. Over the credits, it's shown through newspaper articles that the band, along with Death, go through many perks of fame before eventually taking their act to Mars.

Soundtrack [ ]

As was particularly common at the time, the soundtrack album focuses on the rock music heard throughout the film. An album of the full orchestral score by David Newman would not become available until 2007.

The song Bill and Ted play for the battle of the bands is "Final Guitar Solo" by Steve Vai, which he wrote to help blend into "God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You II" by Kiss, although Bill appears similar in appearance to Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top.

There's also a reference to the lyrics from "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison.

Adaptations [ ]

Marvel comics [ ].

To coincide with the release of the Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Marvel Comics released a one-shot comic book adaptation of the film, hiring Evan Dorkin to adapt the screenplay and pencil the art. Like Archie Goodwin's adaptation of the first Star Wars film film, Dorkin worked from the original script, which included many deleted scenes such as the fears from Hell attempting to block Bill and Ted from the concert, and Evil Bill and Ted killing Bill and Ted before they remind the Reaper that they are owed lives from beating him so many times. Death was portrayed as the archetypal skeletal figure. Due to the popularity of the comic, Marvel commissioned a spin-off series, Bill & Ted's Excellent Comic Book, which kept the talents of Dorkin, DeStefano, and Severin. The series ran for 12 issues, featuring original stories, such as Death taking a vacation, a medieval version of Bill and Ted, Bill and Ted gaining a band manager, a return by DeNomolos, an attempt to stop John Wilkes Booth, and meeting Little Bill and Ted from the future.

Reception [ ]

Critical reception to the movie was mixed. Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, reported that 54% of 50 surveyed critics gave Bogus Journey a positive review; the average rating was 5.93/10. The film's consensus stated: "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey has the same stars—and cheerfully wacky sense of humor—as its predecessor, but they prove a far less effective combination the second time around."

  • Progressive rock/metal band Primus appear as themselves during Battle of the Bands, performing Tommy the Cat.
  • The original title of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey was “Bill & Ted Go To Hell”.
  • Another story idea for Bogus Journey had been to let them take an English test and have them get into books and whatnot.

Now streaming on:

There were parts of "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" I probably didn't understand, but that's all right, because there were even more parts that Bill and Ted didn't understand. This is a movie that thrives on the dense-witted idiocy of its characters, two teenage dudes who go on amazing journeys through time and space with only the dimmest perception that they are not still playing video games. I missed the enormously popular movie that introduced these characters, "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," and felt myself blessed at the time. But now I'm not so sure. Their "Bogus Journey" is a riot of visual invention and weird humor that works on its chosen sub-moronic level, and on several others as well, including some fairly sophisticated ones. It's the kind of movie where you start out snickering in spite of yourself, and end up actually admiring the originality that went into creating this hallucinatory slapstick. The movie begins far in the future, where students at Bill & Ted's University have the opportunity to chat personally with Thomas Edison and Beethoven, and to study such artistic classics as the " Star Trek " TV series. An evil overlord of time, named De Nomolos and played by that gravel-voiced, white-haired villain Joss Ackland , vows to rewrite history by destroying Bill and Ted (played as before by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves ). He has invented robots that look and act exactly like the two heroes, and are just as dumb, and he sends them rocketing back through time in a telephone booth. Bill and Ted are meanwhile trying to win a rock band contest with their own group, the Wyld Stallyons, which includes a couple of girl musicians they picked up in the 15th century. Startled by the appearance of their robot-doubles, they commence their own journeys through time and space in a desperate attempt to destroy them, save themselves, preserve the book of history, stay cool, and meet cute chicks. The funniest thing that happens to them is their showdown with the Grim Reaper ( William Sadler ), who looks just as he does in Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal." In that film (as most of the audience for this one will probably not know), Death played chess with a medieval knight, with the knight's soul at stake. This time the dudes challenge the Reaper to a pocket video game, and beat him, even after he tries to weasel out with an offer of best of three. Death, having lost, has to accompany Bill and Ted on their journey and do what they tell him, and this leads to some of the funniest moments I have seen in any movie in a long time, including one where the Reaper does a little comparison shopping for scythes at the hardware store. One of the stops on the bogus journey is Heaven, created with great imagination and a lot of light and echoing sound effects and a most peculiar conversation with the Deity. Bill ands Ted handle this summit meeting, as they handle everything else in the film, like two dudes for whom "Pee Wee's Playhouse" would be too slow and intellectual. All of the actors (including George Carlin , who turns up in an important supporting role) have a lot of fun with this material, and it turns into more delicate fun, based on more subtle timing, than you might imagine. Many of Sadler's laughs as the Grim Reaper come from simple physical cringing, as he conveys his embarrassment and lost dignity.

Of Bill and Ted, I can say that I have not seen Alex Winter much before (he was in " Rosalie Goes Shopping "), but I have seen Keanu Reeves in vastly different roles (the FBI man in the current "Point Break," for example), and am a little astonished by the range of these performances. Like Sean Penn , who immortalized the word "awesome" in a Bill & Ted-like performance in " Fast Times at Ridgemont High ," he brings more artistry to this cretinous role than might at first meet the eye. Who is the movie intended for? Your basic "Bill & Ted" audience, for starters -- upward-bound young moviegoers looking for something one notch more challenging than " Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ." But also for lovers of fantasy, whimsy, and fanciful special effects. This movie is light as a feather and thin as ice in spring, but what it does, it does very nicely.

  • The world of our distant future is a veritable utopia, thanks to the lyrics of two simple-minded 20th-century rock-and-rollers, Bill S. Preston, Esq., and Ted "Theodore" Logan. However, a would-be conqueror threatens to throw history off-track by sending "most non-non-heinous" evil robot Bill and Teds back to kill their good counterparts. Finding themselves dead, the boys must outwit the Grim Reaper and traverse Heaven and Hell to return to the land of the living, rescue their "babes," and have a "most triumphant" concert at the all-important Battle of the Bands. — David Thiel <[email protected]>

But fed-up with Bill and Ted's peaceful world and even more fed up with heavy metal, Chuck De Nomolos decides to do something about it. In 1990, Bill and Ted are sent to hell by the cyborgs. Cyborg Bill and Cyborg Ted make time with the real Bill and Ted's girlfriends, Joanna and Elizabeth, and prepare to take the human Bill and Ted's places in the Battle of the Bands. The film opens in the utopian future that results from the music of Bill ( Alex Winter ) and Ted ( Keanu Reeves ). Chuck De Nomolos ( Joss Ackland ), who detests this society, steals one of the time-traveling phone booths with the aid of two robots fashioned after Bill and Ted named: Evil Bill and Evil Ted, and travels to the late 20th century, with the intent to prevent Bill and Ted from winning the  San Dimas  Battle of the Bands. Rufus ( George Carlin ) attempts to stop De Nomolos but becomes lost in the circuits of time.

In the present—three years after the events of the first film—Wyld Stallyns is preparing for the contest; though Bill and Ted's current fiancées and former 15th-century princesses Elizabeth (Annette Azcuy) and Joanna (Sarah Trigger) have become skilled musicians, Bill and Ted are still inept. Despite this, the organizer Ms. Wardroe ( Pam Grier ) assures them a slot in the contest as the final act. Bill's stepmother, Missy ( Amy Stock-Poynton ), divorces his father, in favor of Ted's, who still suggests that Ted should go to military school (although has considerably lightened up since the last movie), should they fail the Battle of the Bands. Evil Bill and Evil Ted arrive and the robots eventually replace Bill and Ted, killing them by throwing the two over the side of a cliff at  Vasquez Rocks . The robots behave rudely to the princesses and work to ruin the duo's fame.

Bill and Ted's souls are met by  Death  ( William Sadler ) who challenges them in a game for their souls. Bill and Ted escape after giving Death a "melvin" . They attempt to alert their families but their ethereal forms prove difficult, and at one point, are cast down into Hell at a  séance  held by Missy. In Hell, they are tormented by Satan (voiced by  Frank Welker ), made to face their own fears, manifesting as Col Oats, the Easter Bunny, and Granny S Preston, and realize their only escape is to take Death's offer. Taken to Death's chambers, the spirit gives them the option of what game to play. Bill and Ted, to Death's dismay, select modern games like  Battleship ,  Clue , and  Twister , easily beating Death.

The two recognize they can later go back in time to arrange events for De Nomolos to be trapped in the present, aided by Death and Station; though De Nomolos is apparently able to do the same, Bill and Ted gain the upper hand with the explanation that it is only the winners who get to go back, and De Nomolos is arrested by Ted's father. Ms. Wardroe reveals herself to be a disguised Rufus, having assured Bill and Ted's spot in the concert, and urges them to play.

As Bill and Ted reunite with their fiancées, they realize they are still terrible musicians, and the four use the time booth; though they return immediately, "an intense 16 months of guitar training plus a two week honeymoon" have passed for them, they have married the princesses and each is raising a young infant "Little Ted" and "Little Bill". They begin to perform a stunning rock ballad, joined by Death, Station, and the good robots. The worldwide broadcast set by De Nomolos continues, and Wyld Stallyns' music is played across the globe, creating harmony. During the end credits, fictional newspaper and magazine articles describe the worldwide impact of the Stallyns' music towards the Utopian future.

There are cameos from  Primus ,  Jim Martin  of  Faith No More , and future Linkin Park  guitarist  Brad Delson . Director  Peter Hewitt  makes a cameo as the scruffy-looking smoker in Builders' Emporium to whom Death mumbles, "See you real soon."

Writers  Ed Solomon  (with glasses) and Chris Matheson (in white shirt) appear as New Agers at Missy's seance. Ed is credited as 'Stupid' seance member, and Chris is credited as 'Ugly' seance member. They are given similar credits in  Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure . Also in the seance scene, the incantation Missy uses to send Bill and Ted to Hell is "D'lrow eht elur lliw sirhc dna de," or "Ed and Chris will rule the world" backwards. The character "De Nomolos" is also a reference to writer Ed Solomon, as it is his first and last name spelled backwards.

Soundtrack [ ]

Main article:  Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey: Music from the Motion Picture

The song Bill & Ted play for the Battle of the bands is Final Guitar Solo by  Steve Vai , which he wrote to help blend into " God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You II " by  Kiss , although they appear similar in appearance to  Dusty Hill  &  Billy Gibbons  from  ZZ Top .

When Bill and Ted are asked "What is the meaning of life?" they reply with the lyrics from " Every Rose Has Its Thorn " by  Poison .

Reception [ ]

Critical reception to the movie was mixed.  Rotten Tomatoes , a  review aggregator , reports that 57% of 37 surveyed critics gave  Bogus Journey a positive review; the average rating was 6/10. [5 ]

Desson Howe of  The Washington Post  called it "an entertaining, surreal journey" that is "funnier and livelier than the original." [6 ]  Janet Maslin of The New York Times  called it "amusing but sloppy and overcomplicated". [7 ]   Roger Ebert  gave the film 3 out of a possible 4 stars, writing, "It's the kind of movie where you start out snickering in spite of yourself, and end up actually admiring the originality that went into creating this hallucinatory slapstick." [8 ]  (Ebert did not see or review the first film.)  Dave Kehr , then of the  Chicago Tribune , also gave the film 3 stars. He stated that it is unusual for an Ingmar Bergman parody to show up in a teen comedy and referred to the film as a "genuine pleasure." [9 ]   Gene Siskel , also of the Tribune, gave the film only 2½ stars, but did believe the second film to be better than the first. [9 ] Leonard Maltin  also gave  Bogus Journey  2½ stars, a half-star more than he gave to  Excellent Adventure. [10 ]   Variety  wrote that the film has "a few triumphant moments, but not enough to sustain pic's running time." [11 ]

Marvel Comics adaptation [ ]

To coincide with the release of the movie,  Marvel Comics  released a one-shot  comic book adaptation of the movie, hiring  Evan Dorkin  to adapt the screenplay and pencil the art. Like  Archie Goodwin's adaptation of the first  Star Wars  film, Dorkin worked from the original script, which included many of the deleted scenes, and portrayed Death as the archetypal skeletal figure. Due to the popularity of the comic, Marvel commissioned a  spin-off  series,  Bill & Ted's Excellent Comic Book , which kept the talents of Dorkin, DeStefano and Severin. The series ran for 12 issues, featuring original stories. The first arc features negative results from Death's decision to take a vacation.

In 2010, Reeves indicated that Matheson and Solomon were working on a script for a third film, [12 ]  confirming in April 2011 that a draft was complete. [13 ]  Winter said in March 2012 that he and Reeves both like the finished script, which revisits the two characters after the changes of the past twenty years. Despite the script being finished and satisfied by both parties, no specific filming dates have been named. [14 ]

Bill & ted's bogus journey.

Once... they made history. Now... they are history.

Amiable slackers Bill and Ted are once again roped into a fantastical adventure when De Nomolos, a villain from the future, sends evil robot duplicates of the two lads to terminate and replace them. The robot doubles actually succeed in killing Bill and Ted, but the two are determined to escape the afterlife, challenging the Grim Reaper to a series of games in order to return to the land of the living.

Truly one of the most impressively bonkers sequels ever made

Kind of avoided this franchise for the longest time because it feels like it has “comedy legend” status and I’m always worried those movies will never live up to that, which means I gotta be the buzzkill at the party who interrupts the quote-off to say “I do not actually like the movie you all enjoy.” (Cool guy to be.) But I did like it! It’s pure 80s/90s schlock in all the best ways, down to there being absolutely no moral or lesson to learn (because movies can just be for fun sometimes!) and the whole thing ending with a big concert with all the characters you’ve met through the film and the obligatory cameo by real musicians. (Unfortunately it’s…

So bananas. These two films have always been paralleled for me - but Bogus Journey is the real deal, baby.

Let me start by giving credit where credit is due; the AMAZING William Sadler as 'Death'. He became one of my favorite character actors when I was seven years old because of his hilarious, harmless but still somehow ominous Bergman Reaper. The entire Non-Heinous Hell sequence with Satan/the Easter Bunny/Granny Preston Esquire is truly some kind of neo-expressionist mastery, playing out like one of Tim Burton's finest early moments or any given scene from 'Dr. Caligari'. The whole film toys with heavier more layered plot devices and does it most seamlessly.

I think it's failures are due to it's successor…

If I die, you can have my Megadeth collection.

So dumb it's a masterpiece. This movie is life to me. Everything I love about rock music, cinema, and the 90's is in this movie.

It has Keanu Reeves. It has young Keanu sporting a John Wick beard. It has Death. It has Bill and Ted play Death in a series of board games in a loving homage to one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. It has air guitars. It has evil clone robots. It's loaded with humor so preposterously stupid you can't help but laugh at everything. It has "the babes." It has Heaven. It has Hell. It has God. It has Satan. It has a telephone booth…

32 Of The Best Lines From Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Party on, dude, and enjoy the best lines from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves

In the history of cinema, there are some all-time great slacker teens, but none may have gone from zero to hero in quite so grand a fashion as Bill and Ted. Bill and Ted introduced many of us to Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter , and it was so popular that they ultimately starred in a trilogy of films, but it's difficult to argue that it ever got better than one of the best '80s movies ever, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

The first Bill and Ted movie is nearly infinitely quotable. There are some classic lines here that movie fans still throw at each other to this day. From the hilarious to the surprisingly profound. Here are the best lines from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure .

Alex Winter as Bill in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

I’m Bill S. Preston, Esq.

From the moment we meet Bill and Ted, we know that these two are a bit... different Bill S. Preston would be unique enough to include his middle initial in all introductions, but for some reason he has decided to give himself the title of esquire, despite, as far as we know, not being a nobleman or a lawyer.

Keanu Reeves smiling in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Well, How Can We Have Decent Instruments When We Don’t Even Really Know How To Play?

Bill and Ted, like so many young people have dreams of being rock stars. They are so committed, they won't even let something like an inability to play even get in their way. At least Ted is honest about the fact, however. They really do need Eddie Van Halen.

Mr. Ryan quizzing Bill

So Bill, What You’re Telling Me, Essentially, Is That Napoleon Was A Short, Dead Dude?

To be fair, Napoleon was a short dead dude. Technically speaking Bill isn't actually wrong. Still, Bill and Ted's history professor is far from impressed. Honestly, if we had to spend a whole school year with Bill and Ted, we'd be exhausted too.

Bill and ted

We Are In Danger Of Flunking Most Heinously

Bill and Ted's slang is so sock-thick in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure that it often gets used in ways that aren't quite appropriate. Here, however, Bill is quite right. These guys are going to flunk and it's going to be heinous.

ALex Winter looking confused in Bill and ted's Excellent Adventure

That's Captain Ahab Dude

Despite being certifiable idiots, Bill and Ted both have flashes now and then that proves they're not complete idiots. Bill at least can remember the difference between a fictional whale hunter and the first President of the United States. Though this information implies he either read Moby Dick or was at least paying enough attention in class to learn the information, and that doesn't seem right.

Bill and ted on a staircase

"Remember When I Asked Her To The Prom?" "Shut Up Ted."

Bill's stepmom Missy isn't actually old enough to be Bill's mother, which makes the fact that she insists on being called that awkward.  Bill is unable to handle having a stepmom all the guys in town are interested in. The fact that this includes Ted certainly doesn't help matters.

George Carlin as Rufus

Greetings, My Excellent Friends

George Carlin is an icon. Even Keanu Reeves was starstruck by the comedian on the set. Rufus is one of the great highlights of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, mostly because despite the film's insanity he plays the movie entirely straight. The comedian acts like this line is a perfectly normal way to introduce yourself to strangers, and honestly, it should be.

Bill and Ted at the Circle K

Strange Things Are Afoot At The Circle K

One of the all-time great quatable lines in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure . If you saw this movie in theaters and didn't start saying it to your friends every time you left a Circle K or 7-11, then I don't even know what you were doing with your life. Unfortunately, the iconic Bill & Ted Circle K closed a couple of years ago.

Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves smiling together in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

69 Dudes

Obviously, Bill and Ted from the future are going to know the number that Bill and Ted from the past are thinking about. Of course, the fact that Bill and Ted from the past don't even need to discuss what number they are thinking of, is hilarious, as is the fact that Bill and Ted are clearly shook when their future selves guess right.

George Carlin as Rufus

Gentlemen, We’re History

Delivered any other way, and by anybody else, this line would have been the corniest line in the movie, but somehow George Carlin delivers it was absolute sincerity. An excellently delivered line, showing why George Carlin is actually the coolest guy in the movie. And he looks good in those shades.

Bill and Ted looking concerned

Ted, This Has Been A Most Unusual Day

Bill hilariously explains the glaringly obvious. Of course, it certainly has been a most unusual day, though the most unusual stuff to happen to Bill and Ted hasn't even happened yet.

Alex Winter on the phone in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

This Is Deputy Van Halen Down At The Station

Look, Bill was under a time crunch to get Ted out from under his dad, and you can't expect him to come up with a better alias on the spot. Honestly, though, Ted's dad really should have been able to see through this one. Has he not even heard his kid talk about Van Halen?

Bill and Ted in the old west

How’s It Goin’ Old West Dude

Ted probably isn't going to drastically alter the timeline by introducing himself to every "old west dude" that he meets. Probably.

Bill and Ted with Billy the Kid

Sounds Good Mr. The Kid

Billy the Kid's actual name was Henry McCarty, but to be fair, most people don't know that, so I'm not sure we can blame Bill and Ted for not knowing it either. At least they're being respectful to the dangerous outlaw by calling him Mister.

Bill and Ted in ancient Greece

All We Are Is Dust In The Wind, Dude

Progressive rock band Kansas, and their hit "Dust in the Wind" doesn't actually seem like the sort of music that Van Halen and Led Zepplin loving Bill and Ted would listen to, but this just shows that their tastes in music are wider than they would appear. Maybe this is why their own music ultimately brings people together.

Bill and Ted with Socrates

Like Sands Of The Hourglass So Are The Days Of Our Lives

The Days of Our Lives joke probably went over the heads of your average Bill and Ted fan in 1989, the moms of those fans who took them to the theater probably thought it was hilarious though.

Bill with Billy the Kid

Billy, You Are Dealing With The Oddity Of Time Travel With The Greatest Of Ease

The funniest part of Bill pointing out that Bill the Kid is totally cool with the concept of time travel is that at no point does anybody have a hard time accepting time travel. Bill and Ted take a minute to believe what they're seeing which is the most anybody acts in even the slightest shock.

Bill and Ted looking at the

It’s a History Report, Not A Babe Report

Considering these girls were at least noble, there probably is some historical record about them, which would make them worth covering in your history report. I'm just trying to help out here.

The Royal Ugly Dudes

How's It Goin' Royal Ugly Dudes?

It's not just the phrase "royal ugly dudes" that makes this one art. It's the absolutely earnest way that Bill greets them, apparently thinking that calling them this is a perfectly reasonable way to greet somebody who can almost certainly kill him.

Bill on the phone

I’m Sorry The Number You Have Dialed Is Not In Service At This Time Please Check Your Directory And Dial Again, Party On Dude.

The phrase "party on dude" is apparently so ubiquitous in the future that even the automated phone company recording uses it. Imagine for a second how weird it would be if the customer service person at Verizon said this to you right before you hung up the phone.

Napoleon eating ice cream

He Ate The Pig, Thus Proving That He’s A Zyggee Piggy

It seems like you should get more of a reward for eating that much ice cream than a couple of underpaid employees making pig noises at you but once you've heard these guys call Napoleon a Zyggee Piggy (and yes, that's how it's spelled, no I don't know why) you'll never look at an ice cream sundae the same way again.

Sigmund Freud in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

How’s It Goin’ Freud Dude?

This one doesn't work nearly as well in print as it does when you hear it, because in the film, Ted is somehow able to mispronounce Sigmund Freud's last name so that he rhymes the name "Freud" with the word "Dude." I'm amazed the sequel to Excellent ADventure didn't involve them trying to avoid failing grammar.

Genghis Kahn going for a twinkie

Want a Twinkie Ghengis Khan?

It's not the fact that Genghis Khan apparently loves Twinkies that makes this bit so great. It's the fact somehow this idea makes all the sense in the world. To be fair, who doesn't love Twinkies?

Bill and Ted in the booth

That Conversation Made More Sense This Time

The scene where Bill and Ted talk with Bill and Ted is one of the highlights of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure . It's a hilarious conversation both times, but Ted likely echoes the audience's feelings when he admits that it all makes a lot more sense the second time around.

Bill and Ted yelling and Ted's brother

You Ditched Napoleon?

Bill and Ted are right to be upset with Deacon when they learn he ditched Napoleon in San Dimas. Honestly, other than eating all the ice cream he doesn't appear to have been that bad a guy.

San Dimas High School Football player

San Dimas High School Football Rules

Sometimes the best moments in a movie go to the random extras. This poor jock, who may have been a bigger part of an earlier version of the film based on what we know about Excellent Adventure behind the scenes , is in worse shape than Bill and Ted when it comes to giving his history report. He doesn't know what he's doing, so when he gets stuck, he just appeals to basic high school instinct. It was a hilarious moment because we all knew this guy in high school.

Bill and Ted at Police Station

We Could Do It After The Report

The time travel rules of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure are, to be clear, complete nonsense. Maybe that's actually why Ted has a flash of utter brilliance here showing that he understands how time travel works implicitly. This one line sets up one of the movie's best sequences as our heroes are saved by their future selves doing all the work for them.

Bill and Ted with Sigmund Freud

Nah, Just Got A Minor Oedipal Complex

Bill and Ted may both be failing history but Bill has to be acing English class since we can only assume that's why he has a total understanding of the story of Oedipus. We can only imagine that this revelation led to some awkward moments around the Preston family dinner table.

Gengis Khan on stage

This Is A Dude, Who 700 Years Ago Totally Ravaged China, And Who We Are Told, Two Hours Ago, Totally Ravaged Oshman’s Sporting Goods

It's probably a bad move for Ted to admit that Genghis Khan was the one who destroyed the sporting goods store. Genghis isn't going to be around much longer and with the sporting goods store probably looking for somebody to pay for the damage, Bill and Ted are going to end up on the hook for all that.

Beethoven playing in Bill and Ted's excellent adventure

Beethoven’s Favorite Works Include Mozart’s Requiem, Handel's Messiah, And Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet

It's unclear when Ludwig Van Beethoven had a chance to experience Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet during the events of this movie, especially considering the man is basically deaf at this point in his life. Maybe they were playing it at the mall? Still, that album does totally rock.

Abraham Lincoln in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Be Excellent To Each Other And Party On Dudes

When Bill and Ted say their iconic lines earlier in the film, it's good. But anything anybody has ever said would almost certainly sound better coming from Abraham Lincoln, and this line is no exception.

George Carlin in pain in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

They Do Get Better

The ongoing joke of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is that global harmony was achieved thanks to a pair of well-meaning morons who can't even play the music that will bring about peace. In the final line of the movie, Rufus assures us it will all work out...eventually. And he was right.

While Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is certainly the best movie in the franchise, the success of this movie would spawn Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey a couple of years later before the story finally culminated in Bill and Ted Face the Music more than three decades after the first film. We love Bill and Ted, and many of these great lines are the reason why.
