Digging into the Data: Travel Nurse Demographics
By Cristal Mackay, Workforce Consulting and Analytics .
Workers from every industry have taken time in recent years to reflect on their personal and professional goals. In healthcare, nearly one in five workers have quit their job during the pandemic, citing COVID-19, poor pay and burnout as reasons. [1] While there has been a significant amount of attention surrounding the increased popularity of travel nursing, only 66,790 registered nurses were employed in the temporary employment market, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics May 2021 National Industry-Specific Occupational Employment Report. This only represents 2.34% of the total employment market of 3,047,530 registered nurses.
Why do travel nurses only constitute a small percentage of registered nurses? One leading cause is that it requires a lifestyle that is not a good fit for everyone. Travel nursing requires individuals to leave their homes and the comforts of their social networks and family behind. Because of the unique mobile lifestyle required to be a travel nurse, it raises a question: who is most likely to become one?
We took a deep dive into our data, which encompasses the widest base of travel clinicians, and we uncovered a few noticeable trends in our analysis. We hope this data provides healthcare leaders with insights and takeaways to help develop stronger employer value propositions to retain staff who are likely interested in becoming a travel nurse or recruit travelers into their permanent positions.
The majority of travel nurses are under the age of 35 and single.
The 2020 National Nursing Workforce Survey by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing states that the average age of registered nurses in the United States is 52 years old and that nearly half of all nurses are over the age of 50. Alternatively, travel nurses have an average age of 35 years and only 11% are over 50.
Additionally, an estimated 71.5% of all RNs are married. The inverse is true of travelers with only 30% married.
Travel nursing is part of an overall lifestyle choice that has a strong appeal to a younger demographic that is single and able to be more mobile. Traditionally, they are not tied down with a mortgage or have school-aged children. This younger generation of workers as a whole seek more flexibility for work-life balance. According to Deloitte’s Global Millennial survey, 67% of millennials (individuals born 1981–1996, currently between the ages 26–41) feel that flexibility promotes a better work-life balance. In order to attract this demographic into hospital systems for permanent positions, healthcare leaders should explore adopting time off programs beyond the standard paid time off. Some creative types of paid and unpaid leave programs that many companies have incorporated for their employees include unlimited time off, mandatory time off to recharge, time off to volunteer for non-profit causes that are important to them or sabbatical programs.
Many travel nurses, like Kaylee T., a medical-surgical nurse, take time off between assignments to recharge and spend quality time with friends and family. Others, like Kathryn L., an ICU nurse, and Ryan S., a behavioral health nurse, volunteer on medical missions. Some individuals even decide to take longer periods of time off, like Dallas G., an OR nurse, who takes the summers off to work on an organic farm.
Travel nursing provides the flexibility that travel nurses seek from their employers. Because travel nurses usually work on 13-week contracts or shorter, they choose assignments based on their goals and priorities. Whether they use the time between assignments to visit to exotic destinations or enjoy extended time with their family, travel nurses enjoy the flexibility and empowerment that comes from dictating their schedules.
The proportion of male nurses compared to female nurses in travel are nearly double the overall RN workforce percentage.
In the United States, 9.4% of RNs identify as male which is an increase of 0.3 percentage points from 2017. Based on our travel RNs who chose to self-identify, the percentage of male travel RNs is a great deal higher at 18.3%.
Bianca Frogner, director of the University of Washington’s Center for Health Workforce Studies shares that in a previous UCSF study [2] , researchers found that male RNs tend to be slightly younger, more likely to be married and more likely to have children. Frogner states, “While being married with children may make one less mobile, travel nursing provides the financial bandwidth to support a family on a single income, allowing their spouses not to work and move with them. Married traveler nurses may also be coupled with similarly mobile spouses, who may also be health care professionals.”
The travel nurse population is more diverse than US nursing overall.
According to the 2020 National Nursing Workforce Survey, approximately 76% of RNs reported being White/Caucasian. For traveling RNs, only 63% reported being White/Caucasian, with 37% selecting a race/ethnicity other than White/Caucasian, two or more races or other, compared with a 25% rate overall for RNs in the United States.
Given the diversity of the travel nurse population, hospitals should consider including travelers in surveys to get a real-time pulse on your organization. Travelers arrive into your health system with a fresh perspective and can give feedback on their experience to determine if your organization and team members are providing an inclusive and supportive environment.
At Aya Healthcare, one aspect of our data-driven approach includes analyzing our data in a multitude of ways for a greater understanding of market trends. We use this data to help our hospital clients optimize their contingent labor programs. More importantly, we help our clients to understand the workforce trends and collaborate on their overall workforce development strategies including permanent recruitment. Our workforce consulting and analytics team can provide a deeper dive into the different aspects of our travel nurse demographics including average years of experience, home state, education background and more. Tornadoes and powerful thunderstorms tore a path of destruction across Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas over the weekend, causing at least 21 fatalities, including children.

Strong tornadic storms damaged homes and businesses across several states, including Texas and Kentucky, over the holiday weekend.
At least 21 people are dead, including children, after severe weather spawned several reported tornadoes that tore a path of destruction across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kentucky since Saturday night.
Standing in front of what was left of a destroyed AP Travel Center near Valley View, Texas, about 55 miles north of Fort Worth, Sheriff Ray Sappington said two children, ages 2 and 5, were among the people killed in what he described as mobile and modular homes in rural Cooke County on Saturday night. “It’s just a trail of debris left. The devastation is pretty severe,” Sappington told The Associated Press .
Those dead in Texas included three family members who were found in one home near the small community of Valley View. At least two additional children in Cooke County were also reported missing in the wake of the storm, and crews were continuing search-and-rescue efforts amidst the destruction.
"It took some time to get back in there because of all the damage with the power lines, and trees were down. It was kind of a monumental task just to get back to where they were,” Sappington said. Sheriff Sappington also said 60 to 80 people were injured at the AP Travel Center between Valley View and Sanger early Sunday morning during the storm.
At least 26 tornadoes touch down throughout the Midwest on Tuesday, May 21, following days of consistent warnings from AccuWeather experts.
Several miles down the road, near the town of Sanger, a suspected tornado overturned tractor-trailer trucks and motorhomes, damaged homes and knocked down power lines and trees throughout the area, Dawn Cobb, a Denton County, Texas, spokesperson, said in a news release. Deputies responded to multiple locations, including “homes and RV trailer parks.”
The fire department in the city of Denton, about 37 miles north of Forth Worth, Texas, posted on X that emergency personnel were responding to a marina “for multiple victims, some reported trapped.”

Across state lines, officials also confirmed two deaths in Mayes County, Oklahoma. Details about the dead were not immediately available, said Mike Dunham, the county’s deputy director of emergency management.
Damage was also reported throughout Rogers County, Oklahoma, after a possible tornado. About 28 miles east of Tulsa, police in Claremore, Oklahoma, said the city was “shut down” due to storm damage, including downed power lines, trees and inaccessible roads. Officials say the damage is extensive and power will be out for much of the city “for an extended period of time.”
At least five people were reported killed in Arkansas. A 26-year-old woman was found dead outside a destroyed home in Olvey in Boone County, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Management. Another person died in Benton County, and two more bodies were found in Marion County.
Another death was reported in Benton County, Arkansas. Melody Kwok, a county communications director, said multiple other people were injured.
A state of emergency was declared in Kentucky on Monday in the wake of deadly storms, including one that roared through the community of Charleston, located in the western part of the state.
Storms in the south-central U.S. caused hail, flooding, tornadoes and major damage over the weekend. Debris and destroyed buildings were seen throughout northwestern Arkansas.
According to poweroutage.us , around 68,000 homes and businesses throughout Missouri were without power Monday morning and more than 63,000 in Arkansas. Major outages were being reported in Kentucky, with more than 184,000 customers without power, as well as 34,000 in Tennessee as the storm moved east.

Woman gives birth in minivan in hospital parking lot, says nurse turned her away just hours before
PHOENIX ( KPHO /Gray News) - An Arizona woman says she had a shocking birth experience after her mother delivered her baby in a minivan in front of the emergency room early Monday morning.
Scherazade Vedarte-Gonzalez said it happened because nurses at the hospital sent her home just hours before her daughter was born.
According to the family, it’s a blessing the baby is healthy, and they hope spreading the word helps prevent this from happening to anyone else.
“It was really traumatic,” Lucy Villanueva, Vedarte-Gonzalez’s mother, said.
Villanueva shared that her daughter was in a lot of pain last week, so they went to the Banner Casa Grande Medical Center three times to make sure everything was OK with her pregnancy, but they were sent home every time.
She said they were at the hospital the same morning Luzbella was born when a nurse told them to leave around 1 a.m. and wait for her induction date on May 25.
However, when they got back home, Vedarte-Gonzalez’s pain got even worse. So, they rushed back to the hospital around 3 a.m., just two hours after she was discharged.
“She said, ‘Mom, it’s coming! We got to go!’” Villanueva said. “‘It’s coming! I feel it. It’s already coming out,’ and I couldn’t believe it … when I opened the door, I saw the head already.”
Villanueva said she was the one who delivered her granddaughter right in front of the emergency room’s entrance before medical personnel stepped in to help.
“I didn’t know what to do. So, I just placed the baby on her and I ran inside and I said ‘Help! help! You know, she’s having a baby! The baby’s out!’” she said.
Hospital staff ended up taking over care in the parking lot before admitting the new mother into the hospital.
According to Villanueva, her daughter stayed one night in the hospital and a pediatrician said Luzbella is doing great.
A spokesperson for Banner Casa Grande Medical Center released the following statement regarding the situation:
“Scherazade Luz Vedarte-Gonzalez was seen and assessed prior to delivery. She was not in active labor and chose to go home. She delivered several hours later. We are happy that both Ms. Vedarte-Gonzalez and her baby are doing well following delivery.”

Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery Provides Fishing For Local Nursing Homes
Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery provided fish for the annual Nursing Home Fishing Event at Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center. With residents unable to travel to Hatchery Creek to fish, staff at Wolf Creek NFH decided to bring the hatchery to them and have been doing so for the last several years. This year, Project Leader James Gray, Biological Technician Alan Kimbler, and volunteer Dana Crowley loaded up fishing poles, bait, a large pool, and rainbow trout to give residents at Fair Oaks a morning of fishing fun!
Residents enjoyed watching the trout swim in the pool, trying to get a bite, and sharing past fishing stories. We are proud to be able to support our community and provide fishing opportunities, whether it be at Hatchery Creek or at events like this where getting to the creek or lake to fish isn't always possible.
