Who has won the ATP Tour finals the most times?

At the end of each calendar year, the curtain comes down on another action-packed season at the ATP Tour Finals. With every major prize handed out, with four more Grand Slam winners crowned, eight men battle it out for the right to finish on the highest of highs.

Emerge victorious in the last event of the campaign and the winter break will feel a little more festive for those able to place another shiny memento on the mantelpiece. All of the hard work that has gone before will feel worth it if feet can be put up with another title added to the collection.

It will not take long for attention to turn towards the start of another quest for honours, with the latest tennis odds favouring 6/4 shot Novak Djokovic, 11/4 Daniil Medvedev and 7/1 Rafael Nadal to go well at the 2023 Australian Open. When it comes to tennis tips today , the cream will always rise to the top.

There is one more major hurdle to clear before then, though, with many a legacy enhanced at the ATP Tour Finals. Who, though, has collected that particular prize the most throughout the years?

Roger Federer

The end of an era, merci Roger ❤️ @rogerfederer | #RForever pic.twitter.com/QwnRERud0p — ATP Tour (@atptour) September 23, 2022

The winner of eight Slams as a player, before going on to help Andy Murray break his duck in that department as a coach, Lendl often saved his best for the big occasion. The enigmatic Czech was a force to be reckoned with throughout the 1980s, winning five Tour Finals titles – including a run of three in a row between 1985 and 1987.

Pete Sampras

There was a time when Sampras’ achievements at the highest level appeared set to earn him standing at the top of any winners list. The classy American has been nudged down that particular chart, but few can claim to have matched his exploits at the ATP Tour Finals – with five successes enjoyed between 1991 and 1999.

A man that can appear invincible when performing at the peak of his powers, Djokovic will believe that he is not done yet when it comes to the ATP Tour Finals. He opened his account in that department back in 2008 and enjoyed a faultless run of four triumphs between 2012 and 2015. The iconic Serb could easily top this chart by the time he heads into retirement.

Ilie Nastase

Another mercurial talent that actually won more Tour Finals than he did Grand Slam titles. Nastase triumphed at the French and US Opens, but it was at the end of any given season that he really burst into life, claiming the last trophy of the year in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975.

It may come as some surprise to find that Rafael Nadal – the most successful player in the history of men’s tennis – has never won the ATP Tour finals. He will be competing in that event for the 17th time in 2022, with the Spanish superstar getting another shot at adding his name to a roll of honour that feels slightly incomplete without him.

Top 10 all-time ATP career-prize money earners: Novak Djokovic widens the gap at the top

A joyful Novak Djokovic

He added “only” $9.1 million to his total this year, but world No 1 Novak Djokovic remains well clear of the field in the all-time ATP career-prize money earners list.

Djokovic led the way at the start of 2021 and increased his advantage at the top on the back of another brilliant season that included three Grand Slam titles.

There is only one new addition to the top 10 with Alexander Zverev making his debut following his ATP Finals success.

Top 10 all-time ATP career-prize money earners

10 tomas berdych (czech republic) – $29,491,328.

Despite retiring in 2019, Berdych still finds himself in the top 10 all-time money earners and he is one of three players on the list who doesn’t have a Grand Slam title on their CV.

The closest the Czech came to winning a major was in 2010 when he finished runner-up at Wimbledon while he also has a host of semi-final appearances at other Grand Slams to his name.

Berdych won 13 ATP Tour singles titles during a career that spanned 17 years.

9 Alexander Zverev (Germany) – $29,728,875

The German makes his top-10 debut after winning the ATP Finals, two ATP Masters and two ATP 500 events. His ATP Finals victory was the big game changer as he walked away with a cheque of more than $2 million.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Alexander Zverev (@alexzverev123)

Zverev now has 19 ATP singles titles to his name, but a Grand Slam trophy still eludes him as he only made it to the semi-finals at Roland Garros and the US Open this year.

8 Andre Agassi (United States) – $31,152,975

Eight-time Grand Slam winner Agassi has been clinging onto a top-10 spot for a few years and he is likely to remain there for a couple more more years as the chasing pack is still some way adrift.

Agassi won 60 ATP singles titles and his eighth place is not too bad for someone who retired in 2006.

7 David Ferrer (Spain) – $31,483,911

The Spaniard is the third and final player on the list without a Grand Slam trophy to his name.

Ferrer, who hung up his tennis racket in 2019 having won 27 titles, was considered the nearly man as he found himself playing in the same era as the Big Three of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

The closest he came to winning a major was in 2013 when he finished runner-up to Nadal at the French Open.

6 Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) – $34,778,261

Three-time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka has struggled both with form and injuries in recent years and has dropped outside the world top 80.

The 36-year-old Swiss, who has 16 ATP titles to his name, collected only $145,551 in prize money this year and chances are slim that he will move up further on the list given he is quite some way off the man in fifth.

5 Pete Sampras (United States) – $43,280,489

Sampras has 14 Grand Slam titles to his name, which puts him fourth on the all-time list, while he won 64 singles titles in a career that spanned from 1988 until 2002.

You expect him to hold onto fifth spot for a few more years given that a young player like Alexander Zverev is still $14m plus change off his total.

4 Andy Murray (Great Britain) – $62,314,306

Following a few injury-ravaged campaigns, former world No 1 Andy Murray had a decent season and added $520,937 to his grand total. A long way off the $16,349,701 he earned during his best season in 2016.

After missing the first part of the season due to injury and a positive coronavirus result, Murray will be pleased that he competed in 15 ATP Tour events.

And while he is unlikely to crack the top three, the three-time Grand Slam winner is unlikely to be passed any time soon by one of the up-and-coming youngsters.

3 Rafael Nadal (Spain) – $124,961,595

One of only three players on the ATP Tour above the $100m mark, Nadal added $1,478,830 to his bank account this year.

The Spaniard, who missed the second half of the season due to injury, earned most of that money from winning the Italian Open and Barcelona Open, and making it to the semi-final at Roland Garros and quarter-final at the Australian Open.

Nadal’s best season in terms of prize money earned came in 2016 when he collected $16,349,586.

2 Roger Federer (Switzerland) – $130,594,339

The 40-year-old Federer earned “only” $647,655 in prize money this year as he played only a handful of tournaments due to injury, and he is likely to only be involved in one or two events in 2022 as he continues to recover from injury.

The 2107 season remains his best year for career-prize earnings as he added $13,054,856 to his bank balance that season.

1 Novak Djokovic (Serbia) – $154,756,726

The gap between first and second is getting bigger and it is likely to grow further over the next few years.

Djokovic enjoyed another spectacular season as he won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon while he also finished runner-up at the US Open. Outside of the Grand Slams he won the Paris Masters and Serbia Open.

However, the 20-time Grand Slam winner’s earnings was heavily affected by the coronavirus pandemic as he earned $9,100,547, which is well short of the record $21,146,145 he earned in 2015. Heck, it doesn’t even come close to the $15,967,184 he collected in 2018, but we are sure he won’t complain too much.

Tommy Paul's impressive week at the Queen's Club Championships could end with a first grass-court title in Sunday's final against an equally in-form Lorenzo Musetti. The 27-year-old has a whole lot riding on events at the Cinch Championships, as success over the fifth Italian to reach a tour-level final on grass will make the first-time finalist at the ATP 500 event America's No. 1 player, overtaking Taylor Fritz. While Paul was tipped to edge countryman Sebastian Korda in Saturday's semi-final at Queen's, a straight-sets win over his nemesis was unforeseen. Regardless the 27-year-old triumphed 6-4, 7-6 (2) over the man who held a 4-1 advantage in their head-to-head before the semis.

Andy Murray wins at Queen’s in 1000th tour match

Britain's Andy Murray celebrates after winning against Australia's Alexei Popyrin during their men's singles round of 32 match at the Cinch ATP tennis Championships at Queen's Club in west London on June 18, 2024. (Photo by Ben Stansall / AFP) (Photo by BEN STANSALL/AFP via Getty Images)

The loud shout of “let’s go” reverberated around the brick terraces over looking the grass. Andy Murray had won his first point at Queen’s Club in west London, and the UK grass-court tennis season was truly in session.

It was the first point of Murray’s 1000th ATP Tour match, against Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin, and the five-time champion in West Kensington came through a three-set match that showcased the highs and lows of his late career, as well as some of those of all 1000 matches. 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The symmetry was appropriate, in a match that veered this way and that before settling on the Briton’s side.

He dropped in another let’s go on the first point of the final game, serving his way to victory as the sun dipped over the grandstand. The next point, a swished regulation forehand in the net, was met with resigned anguish. That’s pretty much how the whole thing went, with Murray spending the second set looking all of his 1000 matches, 37 years, and one organic hip, jumping from his chair at the changeover as early as he could to avoid tightening up. But the 739th win duly arrived with a sweet, short cross-court backhand volley, a drop of his new Yonex frame to the floor, and a roar.

That brought up a win percentage of 73.9, that puts him fifth among active men’s players, behind Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner — exactly the company one might expect. Murray said on court that he’d “not got too many wins this year, and any win you can get is important.” One or 1000, it matters not.

atp tour titles all time

‘This is where it all began for Murray’

Analysis from Charlie Eccleshare at the Queen’s Club in London

This was where it all began for Murray, 19 years ago. His first ever tour-level win came at Queen’s in 2005, against the then world No. 110 Santiago Ventura Bertomeu in what was the Scot’s second ever main-tour match. He then backed that up by beating the big-serving American Taylor Dent, before losing in the third round against former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson after succumbing to several prolonged bouts of cramp.

A lot has changed since then.

On Tuesday against Popyrin, he became the 19th player to reach the 1000 milestone, and a near-constant in Murray’s tennis life has been good performances at Queen’s, where he has won a record six titles (five singles and one doubles). He’s yet to reach the quarterfinals in the singles here since winning the last of those five titles eight years ago, but there was still something comforting about Murray walking out for the teatime slot, which he has occupied so often here and at Wimbledon over the last two decades.

He was given a huge reception by a crowd which knows this will likely be Murray’s last ever appearance here. They were similarly enthused for the opening stages of this match, as Murray outmaneuvered a more powerful opponent like he has done so many times before and won the first set thanks to a single break of serve. After so many empty seats at the French Open, it was a big positive to have a packed-out crowd, all fixated on the action. Murray lost the second set — he never did like doing this the easy way — and with the support teams positioned right next to the court, his coaches were right in the line of fire for a few customary ventings of frustration.

go-deeper

Fifty Shades of Andy Murray

It was a jovially aggravated exchange with umpire Mohamed Lahyani that seemed to galvanise him though, grabbing a break at the start of the decider with a brilliant cross-court forehand return winner and a backhand passing shot: the strokes with which Murray has defanged so many players with over the years. Then as the match neared its end, the sun poked through the clouds and Murray once again roared in celebration in London’s W14, soaking up the crowd’s adulation and appearing conscious that he probably doesn’t have too many of these victories left.

It felt fitting that he was followed onto the court by Jack Draper, the new British No. 1 who will have to carry the weight of the nation’s expectations once Murray goes. For now, Murray remains the biggest draw for the home crowds here and at Wimbledon, and he next faces Australia’s world No. 43 Jordan Thompson, a player who beat him in the first round here in 2017 when he was a two-time defending champion.

It was a match that sparked alarm in Murray about the state of his hip, and preceded him limping out of Wimbledon at the quarter-final stage a few weeks later. That’s the thing with playing 1000 matches — there are little stories and sub-plots everywhere you look, even if, for those at Queen’s on Tuesday, there was simple contentment at the fact that match 1001 is coming later this week.

2024 French Open men's final: Carlos Alcaraz defeats Alexander Zverev in 5 sets at Roland Garros

Alcaraz becomes youngest man to win a grand slam in all three surfaces.

After an intense five-set battle, world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz won the 2024 French Open with a 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 4 Alexander Zverev. This is the 21-year-old's third Grand Slam trophy.

Sunday's result helped Alcaraz make history as the youngest man to win a major on all three surfaces, passing his countryman Rafael Nadal who did so at 22 years old.

Alcaraz laid on the court and took in the moment after an intense four hours and 20 minutes. Encounters between Zverev and Alcaraz always deliver, and Sunday's meeting was no different. Their head-to-head is now even at 5-5.

Zverev was off to a rough start as he registered two double faults at the beginning of the match. Alcaraz took advantage of the opportunity and gained some momentum. After 43 minutes, Alcaraz took the first set against the opponent who had beaten him in the quarterfinals of this tournament two years ago.

Alcaraz was first to serve in the second set and also found himself struggling. He picked up his second double fault late in the first game, but held on to take a 1-0 lead. Instead of knocking him down, this became a wakeup call for Zverev and the German star went on to win the second and third sets.

Alcaraz had a strong showing in the fourth set despite needing a medical timeout to take care of his left thigh. He forced the decider and took care of business against a persistent Zverev, who is still on the search for his first major title.

Carlos Alcaraz survives Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2

Alcaraz picked up his first trophy at Roland Garros, and third overall Grand Slam, after a competitive battle that lasted four hours and 20 minutes. The 21-year-old Spanish star was down two sets, but he forced a decider to make history as the youngest man to win a major on all three surfaces.

Zverev gave Alcaraz plenty of issues and put on quite a show, but he is still one of the most talented players without a major title yet.

Spanish star Rafael Nadal, who has won a record-14 French Open titles, congratulated his countryman on what he described as an "immense victory."

"So happy for your successes!!!" Nadal wrote.

Your guide to the Celtics’ championship parade: What to know if you’re going, and how to watch if you can’t

Rafael Campos, of Salem, held a homemade trophy before the start the parade on Friday.

Follow along with live updates from the Celtics’ championship parade

Clear your schedules, and plan to take the day off on Friday for the Celtics’ NBA Championship parade.

If you’ve forgotten the procedure in the six years since the City of Boston last hosted a championship parade, here’s a refresher: As many as 25 duck boats will begin their slow roll through the streets of Boston Friday at 11 a.m., starting in front of TD Garden on Causeway Street and ending on Boylston Street near the Hynes Convention Center.

Temperatures are expected to cool slightly Friday after a sweltering week in Boston , but it’s still going to be a hot one, so Mayor Michelle Wu reminded fans to stay hydrated.

The celebrations began Monday night after Boston blew out the Dallas Mavericks, 106-88, in Game 5 at TD Garden to win their NBA-record 18th title.

Read on for everything you need to before Friday, including the route, road closures, safety information, and more.

After returning from a trip to Miami, the Celtics will board the duck boats and travel through the city.

Celtics parade in Boston: What you need to know

  • Date and time: Friday, June 21 beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Location: The parade route will run from in front of TD Garden on Causeway Street, past City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common on Tremont Street, and end on Boylston Street by the Hynes Convention Center.
  • Events: The Celtics players and staff will not give speeches along the parade route. Instead, they’ll host a pre-parade event at TD Garden before getting on the duck boats.
  • Forecast: The temperature is expected to be in the mid-80s. Keep up with the latest forecast here .
  • Getting there: Wu urged residents to take public transit on Friday as the MBTA will be increasing service on all transit lines. Parking on certain streets in the West End, Downtown, and Back Bay will be closed just after midnight on Friday morning, Wu said.
  • Road closures: Streets along the parade route will be shut down to traffic starting at 9 a.m. Friday morning, Wu said. A list of closed street is available on the city’s website .

When is the Celtics parade?

The duck boats will depart from TD Garden Friday at 11 a.m. — the usual start time for the dozen other parades Boston Duck Tours has held between February of 2002 and February 2019 for the Patriots (six), Red Sox (four), Bruins (one), and Celtics (one).

Ed Davis, the former Boston Police Commissioner in the middle of the Title Town parade run that included the Celtics’ 2008 rolling rally, said that a morning start is a hedge against adult-beverage-fueled unruliness.

“From a police perspective, having something in the morning, it’s less likely to have violence associated with it because of alcohol consumption and things like that, so it just makes it a safer time,” said Davis.

Insider tip: Stake out your spot early. It’s best to get there a few hours before the parade begins if you want to get close to the action.

What is the route for the Celtics parade?

The parade will run from in front of TD Garden on Causeway Street, following Staniford Street to Cambridge Street, which turns into Tremont Street, and then along Boylston Street until the duck boats reach the Hynes Convention Center.

Here’s the full route:

What’s the weather forecast for the Celtics parade?

According to Globe meteorologist Ken Mahan, this week’s heat wave is expected to lift just in time for Friday’s victory parade. The forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid-80s and a heat index — how it actually feels outside — of 87. The humidity, however, may be high, making it feel extra warm and muggy.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, and pack your sunscreen if you’re planning to camp out along the route.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management will have misting tents ats City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common to help fans cool off.

Check out the full forecast here.

Celtics parade rules and safety information

The celebrations on Monday night were relatively tame, as police arrested eight people, mostly for disorderly conduct. Boston police commissioner Michael Cox said there were no other major security or safety issues reported, which he hopes will be the case Friday as well.

“For the most part it was a good crowd,” Cox told the Globe Tuesday. “It’s always a little much when you have that many people, sometimes not everyone listens, but for the most part all our fans did well last night, hopefully they’ll continue to do well going into this. . . . We just want people to celebrate responsibly.”

Mayor Michelle Wu said Tuesday that fans should expect a heavy presence of police — including both uniformed and plainclothes officers — and first responders outside TD Garden and along the route.

“We are also encouraging everyone to celebrate safely, and look out for each other,” Wu said. “Although the weather will cool off slightly by Friday, this is our first heat wave of the year, and we are expecting temperatures in the mid- to high-nineties through Thursday.”

Cox reminded residents “there is no public drinking or use of marijuana on the route in any way.” He also said there should be no climbing or standing on mailboxes, bus vestibules, rooftops, or light polls. If fans do not get down from those areas when asked by police, they could be arrested, he said.

“Any disruptive behavior, fighting, things of that nature, will not be tolerated,” Cox said. “Let’s remember that this is a family-friendly event and we expect everybody to act accordingly.”

Prohibited items at the parade include alcoholic beverages; large bags, coolers, or glass containers; drones; weapons (or replicas of weapons); and fireworks.

During the Celtics’ 2008 parade, police made more than 20 arrests for a variety of reasons, ranging from disorderly conduct to assault and battery.

Road closures and T service during the Celtics parade

Streets along the parade route will be closed starting at 9 a.m. Parking will also be heavily restricted in the areas surrounding the parade route starting just after midnight on Friday. For a full list of street that will be shutdowns and parking restrictions, visit the city’s website.

Wu urged fans to use public transportation to get downtown. The MBTA will provide increased service and modified Commuter Rail schedules to accommodate the anticipated large crowds. For more information, visit the MBTA’s website.

How can you watch the Celtics parade at home?

If you can’t make it downtown for the parade but don’t want to miss out on the fun, you can watch the festivities on NBA TV and the NBA App.

NBC Sports Boston and NBC10 Boston will have live, all-day coverage of the celebrations beginning at 5 a.m. and running through the end of the festivities. Brian Scalabrine will host the coverage and will be joined by analysts, reporters, current and former players, and other special guests.

How many duck boats are involved?

Cindy Brown, CEO of Boston Duck Tours, said Friday that the company is expecting to deploy anywhere from the high teens to 25 vehicles to transport Celtics players, coaches, staffers, and assorted Green legends through throngs of fans along the route.

The company will run a full schedule-through the day before, and then spend the evening and overnight preparing the duck boats for a parade. That includes taking out the seats on the top deck and installing a platform high enough for the celebrants to be seen over the railing as the convoy slowly moves past the throngs of spectators.

Boston Duck Tours doesn’t get paid for the use of its boats and it doesn’t pay the city or the team to use its boats. The company will have to cancel pre-booked tours on the day of the parade and swallow a day’s worth of revenue that is “far into six figures,” said Brown.

“Obviously the marketing opportunity and the pure joy for our staff to be involved in something so important to the city is worth it,” said Brown.

Michael Silverman contributed to reporting.
