Leaders in Responsible Travel

Responsible Travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in Asia. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting true sustainability in the protection of local communities, natural environments and wildlife.

World Firsts

We proudly pioneered the first commercial cycle trip in China (1978) and also in Vietnam (1990), where our inaugural group was met personally by the president on arrival. We also offered the first trek along Japan’s Omine Pilgrimage Trail, and our unique Footsteps of Mongolia itinerary has been awarded one of National Geographic’s Top 50 Tours of a Lifetime.

Innovative Multi Active Itineraries

We’re always looking to provide new and unique experiences to get you off the well-trodden tourist trails. One of the best ways to do that is by joining one of our superb multi activity Asian adventures. Whether you enjoy cycling, hiking, kayaking or all of the above, travelling under your own steam is an incredibly rewarding way to explore the hidden gems of Asia.

Great Value

Quality services at the best prices make our adventures great value for money. We include bikes on our cycle adventures with back up vehicles in case you want to hang up your gloves for the day, kayaks to enable you to paddle to scenic spots, many meals and atmospheric accommodation. We also include national park fees, domestic flights and sleeper trains on most of our adventures.

Expert Guides

Our guides in the field are the real key to our success. From Tim Cope, one of the world’s leading Mongolia experts, to Stony Xiao, who has been guiding our trips in China for more than 15 years—our expert guides are the difference between a good and an excellent adventure.

Exploring the Panda Research Centre in Chengdu&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Alana Johnstone</i>

From China to Japan and Mongolia to Thailand, Asia is blessed with natural and cultural beauty. Despite this beauty, dense populations, emerging economies and the industrialisation of many Asian countries make this area of the world particularly susceptible to environmental and cultural deterioration. To minimise our impact on the natural environment we practice the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', in addition to supporting local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct and Child Welfare Code of Conduct ensure the well-being of animals and children encountered on our adventures.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3 to 4 star properties that are centrally located, atmospheric, and reliable and where we have seen a good track record with traveller satisfaction over many years.

In various parts of Asia, we use quality lodges situated in natural environments. They offer comfortable, authentic accommodation that is clean, well maintained with good facilities and the best choice for the location that they are in.

Traditional style ryokans offer travellers a true taste of Japanese culture, sleeping on comfortable ‘futon’ bedding, laid out on tatami mat floors in wonderfully minimalistic rooms. Modified by sliding rice paper partitions, shoes are always left at the entrance upon entering these serene spaces.

Stay on board a traditional ‘junk’ boat, built entirely of aromatic wood with style and comfort that create the perfect balance of modern convenience and traditional Asian ambience. Cabins are twin share with private facilities. Features vary by vessel; however they may include a viewing platform, dining halls, panoramic windows and a library.

Enjoy fully supported camping with quality two person tents erected in scenic wilderness settings, a dining tent and a toilet tent with a sit toilet. Our crew looks after all logistics including food preparation as we focus on keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum.

During homestays, a local family opens their home providing wonderful insight into the local culture, cuisine and lifestyle. Expect simple but clean and comfortable communal lodgings with shared bathrooms and a warm reception from your hosts.

A ger is a circular felt tent used by the nomadic people of Mongolia and sometimes in Central Asia. Spacious with comfortable beds, our gers allow you to experience ‘life on the steppe’ as you interact with a local family. In the evening, candles illuminate the gers providing an atmospheric night time experience.

Asia Travel

Tour asia: everything, everywhere, all at once, all the time.

Sum up touring Asia in a paragraph? Good luck. Positively massive by just about every measure, the sole thread that unites this diverse continent is the sheer diversity of experiences it presents to travellers. Arid deserts and towering peaks; secluded temples and bustling markets; tiny villages and sprawling cities; ancient history and cutting-edge modernity; teeming crowds and places so remote you won’t find another human being around for miles—Asia encompasses all this and so, so, so much more. Don’t expect to absorb it all; dive on in and let it seep into your skin.

People drinking, having fun and smiling in Asia

Welcome to Asia, the most populous, energetic and contradictory continent on earth.

Across one vast landmass you will find almost everything. Sci-fi skyscrapers in Japan , whitewashed mountain monasteries, honking moped shoals and silent Taoist temples, neon cityscapes and saffron-clad monks bent in prayer. If you’ve come for the familiar, you’re in for a surprise. You can munch deep-fried grasshoppers with white pepper in Thailand. Ride across the Mongolian tundra. Explore the rice paddy fields in Bali.  Swim with Burmese sea-gypsies. You will begin to understand - this place is where ordinary goes to die.

When it comes to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in  Quang Binh  Province,  Vietnam , travellers usually remind themselves of the most impressive and largest cave in the world – Son Doong Cave which could house a 40-story building. However, this UNESCO Heritage Site has much more than that. This is home to many majestic caves – Paradise cave, En Cave, Phong Nha Cave and Dark Cave, to name a few. Besides the caves, there are more than 140 mammal species and plenty of rare flora and fauna which offer you an unforgettable adventure trip.

Our honeymoon in Vietnam wasn't just romantic, it was like stepping into a history book - and Asia Links Travel was our expert tour guide! We had them customize the "Journey to the Past" itinerary since we’re both history lovers. The guides at each stop made us feel like we were living in a history book.

Forget dusty buses and crowded tours - Asia Links Travel showed us Cambodia in its true beauty! We cycled through lush rice paddies, kayaked along serene rivers, and even cruised down the mighty Mekong in a comfy boat powered by! Recommend this agency for Indochina trips.

My family booked a trip to Ninh Binh in Jan and was completely happy with what we got. They took care of everything from transfer to hotels, even the tiniest thing on our trip. Thank you for your services.

South East Asia Active Tour Reviews

Had the time of my life, would recommend to anyone
The tour was amazing, lots to do and see and very well organised!!
Embarking on the "Jungle Hikes & Island Nights" group journey from Bangkok to Singapore was an adventure of a lifetime, magnificently organized and flawlessly executed. From start to finish, the expedition was a resounding success, thanks to impeccable planning and an itinerary that promised—and delivered—an extraordinary experience. The locations we explored were nothing short of spectacular, offering us a diverse palette of experiences that ranged from the serenity of lush jungles to the vibrant nightlife on picturesque islands. The balance between exhilarating hikes and lively parties was just right, ensuring that every day was filled with new adventures and opportunities to create lasting memories. A significant part of this trip's charm was the fantastic group of fellow travelers I had the fortune to journey with. It's rare to find such a harmonious blend of personalities and backgrounds, but we clicked instantly, transforming a group of strangers into lifelong friends. The camaraderie that developed amongst us added a whole new layer of enjoyment to the experience. A special shoutout is deserved for our CEO, Fon, whose expertise, passion, and warm personality made her not just a guide, but a true friend. Her dedication to ensuring that we all had an incredible time was evident in every aspect of the trip. Fon, you are a gem, and your efforts were genuinely appreciated by all of us! However, no adventure is without its lessons. The pace of the tour, while exhilarating, sometimes felt a bit rushed. Extending the itinerary by a day or two could provide a more relaxed pace, allowing for some much-needed rest days amidst the action-packed schedule. For travelers like myself, towering over 185cm, be prepared for a squeeze, especially on the night trains which proved to be quite the challenge. An additional note for future adventurers: consider booking an extra night in Singapore to fully explore the wonders this city has to offer. The tour's conclusion in Singapore feels like just the beginning of another adventure waiting to be discovered. In summary, the "Jungle Hikes & Island Nights" trip from Bangkok to Singapore was an unforgettable journey filled with incredible sights, sounds, and experiences. While there's room for minor adjustments, the overall experience was profoundly impactful, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime. To those seeking adventure, camaraderie, and a touch of magic, this journey comes highly recommended.

Best places to visit in asia.

From megacities to remote islands, Asia's top travel spots offer a hearty dose of adventure, ancient history and culture. And with most Asian destinations now fully open after years of pandemic restrictions, there has never been a better time to plan a trip. After considering local prices, accessibility and the variety of attractions in each destination, along with traveler feedback, U.S. News ranked the best places to visit in Asia. Contribute to next year's list by casting your vote below.

Sagarmatha National Park

Railay beach, guilin and lijiang river national park.

asia travel adventure

If your dream vacation involves posting up on a postcard-worthy beach, the Maldives is for you. This far-flung destination, which is located about 370 miles from civilization in the Indian Ocean, is made up of more than 1,100 idyllic islands (roughly 200 of which are inhabited). The Maldives feature lush tropical landscapes, unparalleled white sand beaches, crystal-clear ocean waters and coral reefs that prompt extensive exploration. The best way to experience this slice of paradise? Stay in one of many overwater bungalows , of course.

asia travel adventure

Tokyo is as fast-paced as cities come – it's the most populated city in the world, after all. Japan's capital features neon-lit skyscrapers and crowded streets that novice visitors may find dizzying, but its one-of-a-kind offerings can't be missed. Spend days touring quirky museums, exploring fascinating architecture or visiting Odaiba for its premier shopping scene. Or, take in some quieter, more peaceful moments at a holy site like the Meiji Shrine or Sensoji Temple. Tokyo's unrivaled gastronomic landscape (think: sushi, ramen, sky-high cocktail bars and more Michelin darlings than you could hope to visit) also makes it a bucket list destination for foodies.

asia travel adventure

Phuket, Thailand's elongated beaches and cerulean waters embody a paradise that few other Asian destinations can rival. Besides swimming and relaxing on the beach, visitors can take traditional, wooden longtail boat tours to James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay to see the surreal limestone rock formations that rise from the sea. The towering Big Buddha statue is also a top attraction, while Phuket's buzzing beach clubs and nightlife options hold appeal for those looking to let loose. What's more, like most destinations in Thailand, travelers can find relatively affordable lodging options here.

asia travel adventure

This Nepalese national park is famous for housing the behemoth that is Mount Everest, the highest point on earth, and promises a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. However, it is important to know that Sagarmatha is not just Everest. The UNESCO-listed park also offers several other sky-high Himalayan peaks, as well as sweeping valleys, scenic glaciers, deep gorges and incredible wildlife, including snow leopards and red pandas. Just note, seeing the park's top attractions typically requires at least two weeks of trekking, and due to Sagarmatha's high elevation and rocky, steep terrain, a trip here isn't for the faint of heart.

asia travel adventure

A British colony until 1997, Hong Kong's strong Western influence sets it apart from China's mainland metropolises. Beyond Hong Kong's sleek, towering skyscrapers (best admired from Victoria Peak), visitors can find natural and cultural gems on the more than 250 outlying islands, such as Lantau Island, or shop the city's bustling street markets. Dim sum is a must, but Hong Kong's robust dining scene also offers everything from street food to Michelin-starred fine dining. And when the sun goes down, watch the Symphony of Lights laser show dazzle the skyline along Victoria Harbor.

asia travel adventure

Tucked among lush mountains in northwest Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a sized-down version of Bangkok's buzz paired with a tranquil culture and natural beauty. Your urban itinerary should include tuk-tuk rides, tours of breathtaking temples like Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara and Wat Phra Singh, trips to night markets and a cooking class to try your hand at pad Thai. Then, step outside of the city walls to visit an ethical elephant sanctuary or two and a wander through beautiful Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

asia travel adventure

History lovers and Instagrammers alike will revel in the sites of Kyoto. The city, which used to be Japan's capital until imperial times, is awash with centuries-old shrines and temples, including the gilded Kinkakuji and Fushimi Inari Taisha, a shrine that dates back to A.D. 711. In addition to saving time for religious sites, be sure to visit the famous Philosopher's Path, preferably during cherry blossom season, and the mystical Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. When hunger strikes, treat yourself to kaiseki: a traditional multicourse meal native to Japan. For another essential Japanese experience, stay at one of the many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in Kyoto.

asia travel adventure

From the moment you touchdown at Singapore Changi Airport (a tourist destination in itself), Singapore shows off its futuristic embellishment. But this Southeast Asia jewel is also unique for its amalgamation of cultures. This fusion takes form in the city's colorful neighborhoods, eclectic culinary scene and overall modern atmosphere. After shopping on flashy Orchard Road and chowing down in cultural enclaves like Little India or Chinatown, head downtown to take in the towering skyscrapers from Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer or the sky-high Gardens by the Bay.

asia travel adventure

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches and ruins without the tourist crowds of other popular Asian destinations. Despite its small footprint, Sri Lanka features 26 national parks, many of which are ideal for a safari excursion to encounter elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Meanwhile, ancient sites like Sigiriya, a 600-foot-high fortress, and the temples of Polonnaruwa hold their own appeal, and the palm-fringed golden beaches that line the shores are never too far away for those seeking a more laid-back vacation.

asia travel adventure

Hanoi is perfect for first-time Vietnam visitors, with tranquil lakes offsetting its fast-paced bustle and darting motorbikes. The country's capital offers plenty in the way of history, culture, shopping, dining and natural splendor. Start your day off with a Vietnamese coffee, then head to Hanoi's central Old Quarter for a stroll through the many narrow, colorful streets and a taste of mouthwatering street food. After that, check out one of the city's many temples, including the ancient Temple of Literature, which dates back to the 11th century, or head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a must-visit for history buffs.

asia travel adventure

Bali's natural beauty is so profound, travelers have been known to refer to the Indonesian destination as "heaven on Earth." Here, lush rainforests, picturesque mountains, sweeping valleys and scenic beaches all sit side by side. You'll also find a handful of serene temples in this Southeast Asia hot spot, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples – both excellent places to catch a sunset. And no first-time trip to Bali would be complete without on a visit to Ubud, Bali's cultural capital and home of the region's famous rice terraces.

asia travel adventure

Whether you visit in spring (for cherry blossoms), summer (for climbing), autumn (for foliage) or winter (for nearby ski resorts), Japan's highest peak and imposing attraction is sure to capture your attention. Mount Fuji lies about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, perfect for a daytrip from the city or a glimpse from a train ride, but this active volcano is also worthy of deeper exploration. Base yourself in the Fuji Five Lakes area to enjoy picture-perfect views at Arakurayama Sengen Park or from one of Lake Kawaguchiko's onsens (hot springs), and don't leave without sampling local hoto noodles.

asia travel adventure

If you only have time to go to one beach in Thailand, make it Railay Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Located in the country's Krabi province, Railay Beach features glistening white sands and is surrounded by limestone rock formations (covered in leafy green vegetation) that jut out from the sea. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the area's natural wonders with a rock climbing excursion or go for a nighttime kayak trip to see bioluminescent plankton. As if this beach destination couldn't get more alluring, you're only able to reach it by boat. Daytrips from nearby Ao Nang are popular among travelers.

asia travel adventure

Siem Reap is the home of Angkor Wat, an ornate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century that is believed to be the largest religious monument in the world. The impressive landmark is just one of many must-sees within Cambodia's UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor. The complex also includes the equally detailed Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm Temple. Because of the immense popularity of Angkor (the site receives millions of visitors per year), you may want to travel during a shoulder month like March or November to avoid bumping elbows with fellow travelers.

asia travel adventure

Travel to the capital of Indian state Rajasthan to marvel at the "Pink City's" incredible architecture. Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone palace that was modeled after Hindu god Krishna's crown, is Jaipur's biggest claim to fame. The property's astounding 953 honeycomb-patterned windows allowed the original ladies of the royal family to view the comings and goings of the Indian city without being seen. Other structures worth seeing are the Jaigarh Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund and Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that displays larger-than-life astronomical instruments.

asia travel adventure

Thailand's capital city is filled to the brim with eye-catching Hindu sites, nonstop nightlife and incredible Thai cuisine. Sacred sites like Wat Arun and Wat Pho are pockets of calm amidst Bangkok's skyscrapers. Shoppers can enjoy the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest street markets, or venture to one of the floating markets located outside the city. While in Bangkok, grab as much grub as possible from the street stalls, and at night, you won't want to miss the lofty views from one of the many rooftop bars.

asia travel adventure

This national park is so loved and respected, its image is featured on China's paper currency. Guilin and Lijiang River National Park is located in the Guangxi region in the southeastern part of China. The Lijiang River runs about 50 miles from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing stunning landscapes and towering green karsts (eroded limestone) along the way. The best way to take in the otherworldly scenery is by boat cruise, though you may want to splurge on a luxury option since the trip can take up to five hours. Tourists who prefer to travel on their own time can also hike or bike along the river.

Disney Cruise Line to set sail in Southeast Asia: Here’s what to expect

Disney Cruise Line

MANILA, Philippines – Ahoy, mate! All aboard the Disney adventure of a lifetime, because the Disney Cruise Line is finally bringing the Disney Adventure Cruise to Asian passengers in 2025.

In an online press conference on June 26, Disney announced the upcoming docking of Disney Adventure Cruise in Singapore next year, in collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board. It is set to sail for at least five years starting in 2025.

Embark on an adventure

Since the cruise line’s launch in 1998, Disney started the tradition of naming a character as the ship’s Captain. For this cruise, it’ll be Captain Mickey at the helm. The cruise will sail for three- and four-night voyages.

“Consumers in this region have shown such strong affinity for Disney, and we are thrilled to bring an unparalleled Disney Cruise Line vacation to their backyard,” Sarah Fox, regional general manager of Asia, said at the press conference.

“By infusing Disney’s signature service with handpicked experiences unique to Asia, guests can look forward to the magic at sea through personalized touches, a selection of global cuisines, and abundant retail offerings carrying a distinct local flavor,” she added.

Laura Cabo, portfolio executive creative director for Disney Cruise Line at Walt Disney Imagineering said that guests can enjoy seven immersive theme areas for guests of all ages.

Different areas, different fun

First is the Disney Imagination Garden , branded as the emotional heart of the Disney Adventure.

Located at the very heart of the ship, this imaginative garden space allows guests a firsthand experience of Disney’s 100 years of legendary adventures, from Moana’s sea feats to Mowgli’s daring quests in the jungle. This garden is made special with open-air performances set in an enchanted valley.

Designed specifically to ignite the spirit of discovery within each visitor, three themed areas lie within the cruise’s landscapes. Shop and dine tirelessly at one of Disney Discovery Reef ’s establishments heavily inspired by aquatic characters and nautical stories from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios such as The Little Mermaid , Lilo & Stitch , Finding Nemo , and Luca .

In the northwestern part of Disney Adventure is adorable personal healthcare assistant Baymax from Big Hero 6 ! Watch as he parades through the vibrant street markets, shops, and entertainment centers located in another area: San Frasokyo Street .

Another open-air oasis where “the sky meets the sea” is Wayfinder Bay , located just south of San Fransokyo Street. It is a poolside retreat, inspired by the Pacific Islands of Moana , that is just as beautiful during the day as it is during the night.

Upon boarding the Disney Adventure, a forest fit for royalty is filled with shops, lounges, restaurants, and entertainment venues, exuding the magic found in Tangled , Cinderella , Frozen , Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , The Princess and the Frog, and more princess films.

Want to meet your heroes? Check out the Marvel Landing and Toy Story Place , where guests of all ages can ride a race car just like an Avenger, or get lost in the whimsical world of Pixar’s Toy Story . From the well-loved Buzz Lightyear or genius billionaire Iron Man, there’s no telling who you’ll bump into here.

The Disney Adventure’s home port will be at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Singapore.

The ship will have an estimated capacity of 6,700 guests, with 2,500 of them crew members. It will be similar to the five fleets prior: Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish.

Other details such as onboard offerings, rates, and itineraries will be announced at a later date.  – Fore Esperanza/Rappler.com

Slow travel to asia with anantara: elephant sanctuary, river cruises and luxury trains.

Anantara is not just one of Asia’s leading luxury hotel brands, it is also a sustainability trailblazer. Now, Anantara invites its guests to experience Southeast Asia the slow way, with a series of curated experiences designed for the sustainably minded traveler.

Mekong Kingdoms is a three-day, two-night journey along the Mekong River.

Sustainable Travel in Asia

For years, Anantara has sought to preserve the destinations in which it operates, contributing to social and environmental projects and supporting local communities through grassroots involvement. Some of its most high-profile initiatives include a coral reef protection project in the Maldives and an elephant welfare program in Thailand.

The brand is also constantly looking for new ways for its guests to interact more sustainably with their travel destinations.

The Vietage by Anantara is the only luxury rail experience in Vietnam.

Sustainable Rail Travel In Vietnam

Rail travel is making a comeback the world over, but Anantara has been on board for some time. This year, one of its most beloved experiences, a luxury railway carriage that takes visitors on a slow journey though Vietnam, has been extended to include a second route.

The Vietage by Anantara is now operating a second railway carriage, offering a daily return journey between the southern Vietnamese coastal resort town of Nha Trang and Quy Nhon, a former fishing village known for its pristine beaches and stunning coral reef.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

The new route is an extension of the existing rail service between Da Nang and Quy Nhon. Together, the two routes offer a one-of-a-kind luxury journey exploring the coast of South-Central Vietnam, and not just a way for people to get from A to B, as Kate Jones, Anantara’s Director of Public Relations in Vietnam, explains.

The Vietage by Anantara provides a rail link between UNESCO-listed Hoi An and Da Nang to the north ... [+] with Nha Trang and Quy Nhon in southern Vietnam.

From Da Nang to Nha Trang, via Quy Nhon

"This is an additional experience within your overall vacation, allowing you to see parts of the country that you would never catch a glimpse of from 35,000 feet, an experience that harks back to a nostalgic way of sophisticated travel, moving at a slow pace, while enjoying silver service fine dining, and the opportunity to dress up for the occasion," she says.

The two, six-hour journeys meander slowly through the Vietnamese countryside, allowing guests to catch a glimpse of water buffalo, Vietnam’s national animal, alongside lotus ponds, rice paddies and all the flora and fauna of Southeast Asia. This, in addition to long stretches of coastline and glittering bays fronting the East Sea, before the train heads inland into the mountainous province of Phú Yên, home to one of Vietnam’s Champa people communities.

Watch daily Vietnamese life go by from your private booth aboard The Vietage by Anantara.

"There is nothing like it!" exclaims Kate Jones. "Sit in your private booth drinking a traditional Vietnamese cà phê sữa đá iced coffee, or a locally-inspired cocktail, while watching daily Vietnamese life go by, from the fishermen casting their nets, to lotus ponds in full bloom, and rice paddies blossoming ready to harvest."

The experience connects two of Anantara’s most popular hotels: Anantara Hoi An Resort , with its postcard-perfect setting in the heart of the old town of Hoi An, the UNESCO-listed ancient town famous for its fairytale colorful lanterns and riverboats, and Anantara Quy Nhon Villas , one of Vietnam’s most luxurious beachfront resorts.

Anantara has partnered with Loy Pela offer river cruises along Bangkok’s Chao Praya River.

River Cruises And Elephant Sanctuary In Thailand

In Thailand, Anantara has partnered with Loy Pela to offers a magnificent river cruise along Bangkok’s Chao Praya River. Sailing along the historic River of Kings, guests are given the opportunity to experience Thailand's natural beauty, culinary delights, cultural heritage, and storied past. This voyage offered by Anatara Riverside Bangkok connects Thailand’s vibrant modern-day capital Bangkok with the ancient capital, Ayutthaya.

In northern Thailand, more specifically the remote mountainous province of Chiang Rai, Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort invites guests to embark on a three-day, two-night journey along the Mekong River between to Anantara Luang Prabang in Laos. The voyage aboard the Gypsy, an exclusive 134-foot rice barge with just two deluxe cabins, is filled with activities and locally sourced feasts, as well as visits to remote elephant camps, silk-weaving villages, and ancient caves.

Back at Anantara Golden Triangle, guests can also bond with the elephants at the resort’s caretaker village and even sponsor one of them. There is a spa in the jungle with healing treatments inspired by local wisdom and designed to enhance wellbeing.

Canopy dining at Anantara Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai.

Another popular experience from Anantara Golden Triangle, Canopy is a treetop dining experience, where breathtaking jungle vistas serve are the backdrop for a once-in-a-lifetime culinary adventure. Diners enjoy panoramic views over the area where northeastern Myanmar, northwestern Thailand and northern Laos meet, known as Thailand’s Golden Triangle, from a canopy capsule set among the treetop branches.

I Spent Years Chasing Adventure and Almost Ended Up on the Doomed Titan Submersible — Here's What I've Learned About Staying Safe

After a scary ski accident, this writer resolved to reevaluate her approach to risky travel — and then get back out there.

Illustrations by Marcos Montiel

“No, no, no!” I screamed frantically while lying on the ski-patrol exam table, as a first responder prepared to pull off my boot. “It’s going to hurt,” she warned me, “but we have to do it.” I’d broken my leg, and I was in for a long, lonesome night. Soon enough, I’d be shuffled from the mountain to a local ER and onward to a larger hospital where I’d undergo immediate surgery for a tibial plateau fracture.

Prior to that accident in the Kootenays of British Columbia, I’d always found travel to wild places both thrilling and rewarding, and I admire those who push their limits. In fact, I gave serious consideration to joining a June 2023 trip organized by OceanGate Expeditions to view the wreckage of the Titanic . That trip, which I turned down, ended with the loss of five lives, along with the Titan submersible.

The near miss, coupled with my injury, forced me to reckon with risk. Things like evacuation plans and travel insurance are now top of mind, no matter where I’m headed. Still, I’m not giving up my adrenaline-pumping trips. I’m just approaching them with a new mindset — and embracing this advice.

Dig for details.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions before you book, says Shannon Stowell, CEO of the Adventure Travel Trade Association . “The good operators will have a risk- and crisis-management plan,” he says. “Ask them, ‘What’s your plan for getting somebody out?’”

Get covered.

Standard-issue travel insurance policies don’t cover all scenarios. A souped-up Explorer Plan from World Nomads , on the other hand, is broadly inclusive, even if you’re doing things like paragliding, rock climbing, heli-skiing, or cage-diving with sharks.

Be your own backup.

Getting certified in wilderness first aid can give adventurers peace of mind. Organizations including NOLS and Wilderness Medical Associates International offer multiday, hands-on training in the basics of life support as well as more advanced first-aid techniques.

Carry critical communications gear.

Most off-the-grid operators will pack a satellite phone as part of their emergency kit. Individuals can also carry their own SOS beacons, such as the Garmin inReach Mini 2 .

Know whom to call.

In some parts of the world, simply reaching emergency services can be a challenge. The U.S. Department of State has a list of country-specific corollaries to 911 on its website. In Chile, for example, the number for emergency medical help is 131; Australia’s line is 000 — or 112 if you’re calling from a cell phone.

Keep your contacts in the loop.

Share emergency-response plans and the phone numbers for search and rescue services in the area you’re visiting. “Update everybody with all the phone numbers and details,” says Matt Mosteller, one of Canada’s top adventure and outdoor experts. And don’t forget to check if your emergency contact will be in reach during your travel dates.

Rethink your goals.

“Things go wrong when people venture out on their own, beyond their experience level,” says Saveria Tilden, founder and CEO at AdventurUs Women . “People get too focused on their goal,” she says, whether it’s reaching a summit or making a difficult passage by sea. “The goal should always be to come home.”

I've traveled to 20 countries in 2 years. I found the most stunning coast in one of the least-visited countries.

  • I traveled to Timor-Leste in May and spent four days exploring its capital city.
  • Timor-Leste is one of the least-visited countries in the world.
  • While inaccessible and expensive, it was worth visiting for its unspoiled coastline.

Insider Today

I've spent the past two years traveling to 20 countries . While most of these countries — from the Maldives to France — were among the world's most popular, it was the off-the-beaten-path destinations that I enjoyed most.

Last month, I traveled to Timor-Leste , a country located in the South Pacific. The country comprises the eastern part of Timor Island and two smaller islands. At 5,800 square miles, it's comparable in size to the Bahamas.

It's also the 14th least-visited country in the world and the least-visited in Asia, according to a January report from CEOWorld magazine . Some 81,000 tourists visited Timor-Leste in 2023 — putting it just ahead of Chad and Sierra Leone, per the report.

The lack of tourists is not a direct result of the pandemic either. Back in 2019, only around 80,000 tourists had visited, per the National Statistics Directorate Timor . While researching my trip, I struggled to find information online for tourists — save for a handful of short vlogs on YouTube. I ended up having to learn along the way.

Here are seven things that surprised me about Timor-Leste.

1. It's difficult to fly there — and even harder to get around.

Only a handful of airlines fly to Dili, the capital, where the only international airport in Timor-Leste is located. Tourists can only fly to Dili from Bali , Indonesia, and Darwin, Australia. I was in Bali for three weeks, so I decided to fly with the Indonesian budget airline Citilink. Dili's airport is tiny — there's only one departure gate and one runway.

There are no ride-hailing services in Timor-Leste. While there are some taxis to help tourists get around, I only spotted them around the airport and in the city center. I ended up meeting Fernando, a local, who took me around the city on a scooter. I found that traveling via scooter was the best way to sightsee from the coasts to the surrounding mountains.

2. There aren't many options when it comes to accommodation.

While Hilton plans to open a hotel in Dili's business district later this year, when I visited, there were no luxury resorts or international hotel chains in Timor-Leste. With only around 70 hotels and guesthouses in the country listed on Google Hotels, lodging choices online were limited. I booked three nights at Timor Plaza Hotel & Apartments, a three-star hotel located next to a small mall in the city center.

After chatting with other travelers, I found many were staying in local guesthouses by the beach. They're usually a simple set-up, comprising a small room with a bed, mosquito net, and a fan. You can spot signs at the side of the road showing if there are rooms available for the night. Since there are very few tourists in the country, chances are you can negotiate a rate and book your stay on the spot.

3. Locals use US dollars — which means it's more expensive than other nearby countries.

The US dollar is the official currency. While used interchangeably, The East Timor Centavo is only minted in coins and pegged to the US dollar at $1 to 100 centavos. This makes Timor-Leste more expensive than many other countries in Asia.

Related stories

In Bali, a plate of nasi goreng — an Indonesian fried rice with satay — costs an average of between $3 to $4.50. In Dili, I paid between $10 and $15 for a similar dish. In Bali, renting a scooter for a day can cost as little as $3. In Dili, it costs over five times more, between $25 and $35.

4. Not everyone speaks the same language.

While Portuguese and Tetum are the official languages of Timor-Leste, English and Indonesian are the working languages. However, only 13.5% of locals speak Portuguese, according to the US Department of State .

The majority of locals I met in Dili spoke Tetum and Indonesian. Due to the high number of ethnic groups in Timor-Leste, there are at least 16 additional languages between them.

As I grew up in Singapore and can speak some Indonesian , when locals didn't speak English, that was my fallback language. Although Fernando, my guide, told me tourists needed to be careful when conversing in Indonesian. He noted that some locals may get offended, considering the complicated history between these countries. I found that it was best to ask what language they prefer to speak when in doubt.

5. Very few American chains operate in the country.

Only a handful of American food chains exist in Timor-Leste, mostly in Dili's city center. I spotted a Burger King and a Gloria Jean's Coffee outlet next to each other right outside the hotel where I was staying — McDonald's doesn't operate in Timor-Leste. As an adventurous eater, I had all my meals at locally-run eateries and cafés, where I had Indonesian and Timorese fare.

A few stores sell American brands like Head and Shoulders and Maybelline when it comes to toiletries and makeup. But no-name brands are more common and are sold for much cheaper.

6. The landscapes are some of the most pristine in the region.

I found that Timor-Leste offered some of the most scenic views in Asia.

I spent most of my time at Cristo Rei Beach — which is overlooked by an 88-foot-long statue of Jesus Christ — at the northern tip of Dili. It's a natural white-sand beach with the clearest waters I have ever seen — even clearer than the Maldives . I could see the outline of the mountainous Atauro Island from the coast, famed for its rich, colorful reefs.

After traveling the region extensively, I found Dili the most scenic capital city I've seen. Its gorgeous coastline is flanked by towering mountains.

7. You won't find the local nightlife listed online — but you'll find it in the streets.

On Google Maps, there are only a few local nightlife establishments listed — and most have no photos, reviews, or information. But my guide, Fernando, shared that locals love drinking the local palm wine and dancing to Kizomba, a dance genre originating from Angola, in the late evenings.

I was fortunate to be in Timor-Leste on May 20, during National Day. It marks when the country gained independence from Indonesia . I found thousands of people partying by the beach and hundreds of motorcycles revving down the coast to celebrate the day. The energy was unexpected — and a memorable surprise that I'll never forget.

Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia and shares borders with Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It’s home to over 15 million people, most of which, follow Theravada Buddhism. There are minority groups which include Vietnamese, Chinese, Muslim Chams, and small tribal groups. Cambodia is unique in their beliefs, mixing Hindu, Buddhist and Animist ideas to create a culture like no other place on earth.

A – Z Activities

Cambodia is home to the world-famous Angkor Wat temple complex, lush tropical jungles, beautiful mountains, stunning beaches, waterfalls, islands, and “The Paris of the East” – Phnom Penh.

History & Culture

Cambodia has a long, proud, and at times tragic history. Evidence of people farming in the area date back to around 2,300BC with stone tools being recorded in 1,500BC. Major civilizations started to come in around 150AD along the Mekong River.

Travel Resources

The dry season from around November to February are the most popular months to visit Cambodia. It’s much cooler in the days and evenings during this time and it’s the busiest time of year as most people prefer to come. The rainy season shouldn’t put you off visiting Cambodia.

Top Attractions

No visit to Cambodia is complete without first visiting the Angkor temples. Angkor Wat is the temple everyone wants to see and it’s the largest and most magnificent of all the temples built by the ancient Angkor. However, it’s not the only temple to see.

'The Claman Countdown' panelists Bankim Chadha and Thomas Hayes unpack investing in cyclical stocks.

Disney Cruise Line has announced its first ship with a home port in Asia, and it will be setting sail for three- and four-night itineraries next year.

The Disney Adventure, currently under construction at the MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, will set sail in 2025 from Singapore's Marina Bay Cruise Centre for at least five years, as a result of a collaboration between Disney Cruise Line and the SIngapore Tourism Board.

"We're bringing the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Asia for the first time ever, and we want to give our guests the cruise relaxation and Disney fun they can only experience aboard one of our ships," Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line, said in a press release on June 26.

"When they set sail on the Disney Adventure, guests will find incredible, immersive areas that bring the worlds of Disney, Pixar and Marvel to life in ways like never before – and these uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they'll cherish forever."

The southeast Asian cruise is meant to be the ultimate family travel experience, with "dedicated spaces and clubs for kids, tweens and teens, while adults relax and unwind with premium dining, lounge and spa experiences."

Disney Cruise Line to homeport in Asia for the first time in 2025

S ailing from Singapore in 2025, the one-of-a-kind Disney Adventure will offer families throughout the region the ultimate holiday at sea. The first Disney Cruise Line ship to homeport in Asia will be a destination itself, sailing on three- and four-night voyages designed with magical days at sea and filled with immersive storytelling and captivating entertainment like only Disney can do.

"We're bringing the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Asia for the first time ever, and we want to give our guests the cruise relaxation and Disney fun they can only experience aboard one of our ships," said Sharon Siskie, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Disney Cruise Line. "When they set sail on the Disney Adventure, guests will find incredible, immersive areas that bring the worlds of Disney, Pixar and Marvel to life in ways like never before — and these uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they'll cherish forever."

New areas to discover aboard

The Disney Adventure will be both a journey and a destination, a voyage of limitless possibilities that brings to vibrant life the core pillars of Disney storytelling.

Through the magic of imagination, discovery, fantasy and, of course, adventure, guests will embark on voyages to seven uniquely-themed areas, each teeming with dozens of incredible characters and unforgettable experiences, without ever leaving the ship.

Disney Imagination Garden will be the emotional heart of the Disney Adventure, an enchanted valley, charming garden and open-air performance venue all in one.

Inspired by 100 years of heroic and heartwarming Disney adventures — from Moana on the high seas to Mowgli in the jungle — this imaginative gathering space will be guests' gateway to an unforgettable journey all their own.

At Disney Discovery Reef, families will shop and dine in an ethereal and ever-changing retreat evoking favorite aquatic characters and nautical stories from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, including "The Little Mermaid," "Lilo & Stitch," "Finding Nemo" and "Luca."

Inspired by the eclectic world of Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Big Hero 6," San Fransokyo Street will be a family entertainment area pulsing with the energy and atmosphere of a vibrant street market and boasting an assortment of interactive games and activities, shops, cinemas and more.

At Wayfinder Bay, guests will be called by "the line where the sky meets the sea" to an open-air oasis under the sun, where relaxation and exclusive entertainment await. The sophisticated yet casual poolside retreat will reflect the Pacific Islands-inspired artistry of Disney Animation's "Moana," offering some of the most stunning views of the sea and sky aboard the Disney Adventure.

Meanwhile, Town Square will be a celebration of Disney royals — a magical land dedicated to those who wish upon a star hoping their dreams will come true. This fantastical forest filled with shops, lounges, cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues will exude the enchanting feeling of summer in full bloom with nods to "Tangled," "Cinderella," "Frozen," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "The Princess and the Frog," and more.

At Marvel Landing, heroes will unite in a destination for fans of all ages. As a celebration of Marvel's larger-than-life personalities, this area will offer Avengers-level adventure, with all-new attractions and experiences that showcase imaginative representations of guests' favorite Super Heroes.

Finally, Toy Story Place will inspire guests to explore, create, connect and have fun in a whimsical, interactive play land with themed food venues and water play areas, where the world of Pixar's "Toy Story" movies and shorts springs to life in surprising and inventive ways.

Where magic meets the sea

The Disney Adventure will offer guests a Disney Cruise Line holiday on a grand scale, including the hallmarks of every Disney cruise — fun and relaxation for everyone onboard, incredible dining, world-class entertainment and exceptional guest service.

Every sailing will include an endless array of indoor and outdoor fun, with exciting attractions, interactive play areas, fun in the sun and special entertainment, plus so much more for families to enjoy together. Young cruisers will have the time of their lives with dedicated spaces and clubs for kids, tweens and teens, while adults relax and unwind with premium dining, lounge and spa experiences.

A highlight of every Disney cruise holiday is the world-class entertainment that brings the ship to life. Throughout the Disney Adventure, guests will enjoy unforgettable character encounters, dazzling stage shows brimming with Disney songs and characters, signature events, first-run films, karaoke and game shows.

Guests aboard the Disney Adventure will also enjoy the exceptional dining and impeccable service that Disney Cruise Line is known for. Guests will indulge in a collection of imaginative restaurants where dinner is more than a meal — it's a chance to feast on favorite Disney stories through immersive theming and distinctly Disney entertainment. Guests will be accompanied by the same dedicated service team throughout the voyage, adding a level of familiarity and attention to their dining experience.

When it's time to rest, guests will retreat to well-appointed staterooms complete with special Disney touches and family-friendly conveniences, such as Disney Cruise Line's signature split-bath concept, which allows two people to get ready at once.

Disney Cruise Line estimates the passenger capacity of the 208,000-gross-ton Disney Adventure to be approximately 6,700 with around 2,500 crew members.
