Ranking the best stores to buy appliances

Where to buy appliances, where can i get the best deals on appliances, should i buy an appliance online or in-store, are regional appliance stores better than national chains, the best places to buy appliances in 2021, according to experts.

Shopping for a new appliance? For the best deals and overall experience, you may want to consider purchasing from a regional retailer — or becoming a Costco member.

Consumer Reports recently polled 48,000 shoppers for their thoughts on where to buy appliances. Participants rated the 76,000 appliance purchases they made between early 2019 and mid-2020.

So where should you make your next major appliance purchase? We go over some of the top-ranked retailers below. While the overall rankings from the Consumer Reports survey are helpful, it's more important to know if a store even delivers to your area or has the brands you want.

Thus, we'll be taking a look at the benefits — and drawbacks — of buying from some of the top major appliance retailers across the country. 

Only one national chain made it into Consumer Reports' top five (Costco, 4th place). Regional appliance retailers otherwise dominate the top of the list, with Chicago-area Abt Electronics taking the number one spot.

What do regional chains offer that big box stores like Best Buy (16th place) and Lowe's (20th place) do not? Quality of service, product selection, and in-store atmosphere are areas in which regional retailers boasted at- or near-perfect scores compared to most national chains. 

As for price, most national appliance sellers fell somewhere in the middle while many regional retailers scored above average. However, per the survey, Costco provides the best appliance deals overall.

One caveat to note: given the timeframe of purchases, these results may not fully reflect the inventory problems that arose during the pandemic. 

Here's a closer look at what some of the best major appliance retailers do well, and where they also fall short. 

Abt Electronics

This Chicagoland-based retailer not only specializes in small and large appliances, it also sells consumer electronics, furniture, and mattresses. It tops Consumer Reports' list of best places to buy appliances for the 11th year in a row and delivers to all 50 states plus Puerto Rico.

Pros: 

• Excellent customer service
• Wide selection of major brands and models
• Free shipping on most orders over $35

Cons: 

• Delivery times much slower for much of the western USA
• Competitive prices but not always the lowest out there

Costco's fourth-place ranking on Consumer Reports' list of where to buy appliances is largely due to its outstanding deals. Although it's a members-only warehouse, non-members can also buy from Costco; however, non-members will be on the hook for an additional fee.

• Most appliances are only available online

Nebraska furniture mart.

Nebraska Furniture Mart sells much more than what its name suggests. The retailer — which has physical stores in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Texas — took fifth place in Consumer Reports' survey thanks to its wide selection of brands and superb customer service. It delivers to most areas of the United States, except for Alaska, Hawaii, and California.

The ever-ubiquitous Amazon ranks 10th on Consumer Reports' list. It may not have the widest selection of well-known brands, but Amazon does serve up competitive prices — along with free delivery to any room of your choice for most items.

• Beware of less-than-savory third-party vendors
• Decent selection but stock is often limited

Tech superstore Best Buy may not have cracked the top 10 of Consumer Reports' list — it ranks 16th — but it's still among the best national retail chains for buying major appliances. Along with regular appliance sales, Best Buy also offers a price match guarantee.

National hardware chain Lowe's barely edged out The Home Depot for 20th place on Consumer Reports' list of appliance stores because of its above-average selection of brands and models — especially at its retail locations.

Most appliance stores roll out sales during major holidays, especially toward the end of the year. Alternatively, you can save on seasonal appliances (like grills) when you buy off-season. 

Buying an appliance online is more convenient — especially if you find a great deal from a regional store outside your area. However, in-store shopping allows you to see products up close and provides a more direct means for talking your way into extra savings on delivery costs or multi-item purchases.

Buying from a regional retailer has its benefits — namely when it comes to pricing and quality customer service. However, buying from a national chain is fine if you know exactly what you want; they also tend to have fewer area restrictions for delivery.

Looking for a unique experience? Try visiting the KitchenAid Experience Center in Greenville. This retail store in downtown Greenville showcases KitchenAid's countertop appliances like the stand mixers that made KitchenAid famous as well as attachments, food processors, cutlery and kitchen gadgets.

The KitchenAid Experience also offers a cooking school with classes from gourmet cooking to everyday meal preparation.

In the lower level storeroom also features a museum with exhibits featuring old-time household appliances and of course the development of the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. One of the items on display is Julia Childs old friend, her blue KitchenAid Stand Mixer that appeared in many of her regular TV shows. The mixer was acquired by KitchenAid in 1999 when Julia requested a new mixer for her new show "Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home" . When the new mixer arrived at Julia's home, she sent her old mixer back to Greenville.

KitchenAid History

In 1908 Herbert Johnson, an engineer for the Hobart Manufacturing Company, invented an electric standing mixer. His inspiration came from observing a baker mixing bread dough with a metal spoon; soon he was toying with a mechanical counterpart. By 1915, his 80-quart mixer was standard equipment for most large bakeries.

World War I intervened before Hobart developed a model for residential use. However, by 1918 testing began on a smaller residential model. Company executives were the testers that took models home and let their wives put the new machines to work in the kitchen. When the testing period was about over, they decided it was time for putting a marketing program together. The testers were questioned about what they thought of the new mixers and what they thought would be an appropriate name. One executive was quoted

"I don't care what you call it," legend has one of the executives' spouses espousing, "all I know is it's the best kitchen aid I've ever had."

The name stuck and in 1919 Hobart introduced the KitchenAid Food Preparer for the home. The first 5-quart countertop KitchenAid mixers were not cheap:$189.50, or about $2,000 in today's dollars, and they weren't light-either. Weighing in at 65 pounds, the kitchen machine weren't exactly convenient either. That changed in 1936, when pioneering industrial designer Egmont Ahrens trimmed the mixer down and reduced the price to $55. The streamline shape has changed so little that Ahrens' bullet silhouette is patented.

The Model K, first introduced in 1937 as a more compact, moderately priced mixer and capable of powering all the attachments. Since then, every model introduced by KitchenAid has allowed for fully interchangeable attachments. The mixer's mechanics remain virtually unaltered, too. An attachment made in 1919, the pea shucker, will fit on today's model. Tens of millions of KitchenAid mixers have been manufactured at the same Greenville, Ohio, factory that produced the first one in 1919.

Taylor Swift has restructured her Eras Tour. Is this the show we'll see in Indianapolis?

At her first show in Paris, France, Taylor Swift had many surprises in store for fans: New outfits, set transitions and most noticeably, a new setlist.

It is assumed this will be the setlist used throughout the rest of the tour, which means Indianapolis may be seeing this version of the Eras Tour in November as opposed to the version she did on the first leg of her North American tour (but don't worry, it will forever be immortalized in the movie experience on Disney+ ).

Here's everything you need to know.

Did Taylor Swift change her setlist?

Yes. At her show in Paris, France, the first show after the release of her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department (or TTPD, for short), a live stream revealed that she changed up the setlist .

Fans were surprised she changed up the order of the different eras of her music as well as the addition of the newest era, TTPD.

Of course, to make room for the new section of the show, some cuts were made.

She removed "The Archer" from the "Lover" section, she removed "Long Live," from the "Speak Now" section, she combined the "Evermore" and "Folklore" sets to save time and removed "the 1," "tolerate it," "'tis the damn season" and "the last great american dynasty."

When is Taylor Swift coming to Indy?

Taylor Swift  announced in August  she is bringing her "Eras Tour" to Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium for three nights, Nov. 1, 2 and 3.

How to get Taylor Swift tickets for Indianapolis?

You may still have a chance to see the Eras Tour in November.

Ticket sales through Ticketmaster are officially over, however, several marked-up tickets are still available for the Indianapolis shows on re-selling sites like  StubHub  and  SeatGeek .

If you're still hoping to get tickets, they may be costly. Most tickets are priced are anywhere from $1,500 to almost $3,000 each, and the cheapest tickets are for seats near the top of the bowl.
