Melrose Georgetown Hotel , Washington DC

Orientation tour of Washington this morning. This afternoon two fine public gardens – United States Botanic Garden & Arlington Cemetery to see the changing of the guard ritual at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Welcome dinner included tonight.

Mt Vernon is your destination this morning, on the banks of the Potomac River; the home, garden and plantation of George Washington with upper and lower gardens, flower and kitchen gardens, Orangery, family burial vaults and slave graves. You will get a real sense of a pioneering, energetic, eighteenth century man and his gardens. River Farm is next, on the Potomac River, once part of the of George Washington’s original five farms, now headquarters of the American Horticultural Society. Return to your hotel with dinner included this evening and then a tour of the famous Washington Monuments, all illuminated, including US Capitol Building, World War 2 Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, White House and Martin Luther King Junior Memorial.

Morning visit to Dumbarton Oaks, once the home of Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss who found their ideal country house and garden within Washington, DC in 1920. They purchased a fifty-three-acre property and hired landscape gardener Beatrix Farrand to design the gardens. Working in happy and close collaboration for almost thirty years, Mildred Bliss and Beatrix Farrand planned every garden detail, each terrace, bench, urn and border. The result is a triumph in garden design; terraces are sculpted with grass, brick, mosaic pebbles and planting. In 1941 Dumbarton Oaks was donated to Harvard University and is faithfully maintained. Travel on to Philadelphia.

Renaissance Downtown , Philadelphia

Travel into the nearby Brandywine Valley to Longwood Gardens, a horticultural tour-de-force, recalling the great pleasure gardens of Europe. Gardens here were created by Pierre du Pont who laid out the first flower garden at Longwood in 1907 and went on to create water gardens and fountain displays to rival anything he had seen in Europe; 434 ha of complex gardens, 20 indoor gardens in elegant glass conservatories and spectacular illuminated fountains. After a guided orientation tour of the gardens, there will be time for lunch and free time for you to explore. Fountains have been restored – so we won’t miss them.

Back to Brandywine this morning and this time to visit Winterthur, home and garden of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969). He selected plants from around the world to enhance the natural setting. He created a flowering understory of rhododendrons and azaleas beneath a woodland canopy and was meticulous with colour planning. Close to the house is Sundial garden, Reflecting Pool and Peony Garden that serve to link the house with the wider landscape. Lunch included.

We are heading to New York with a morning visit Chanticleer, a “pleasure garden” designed to illustrate the beauty of the art of horticulture. The summer home and country retreat of Adolph Rosengarten. See the Ruin Garden,‘Old Tennis Court’ garden, Pond Garden, Gravel Garden, Teacup Garden and Cutting Garden. Continue to New York, check-in to your hotel, for the next four nights, centrally located in the heart of the city a short walk from Central Park, Carnegie Hall, Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Dinner is included this evening.

The Iroquois , New York

Morning visit to the widely acclaimed ‘High Line’, an urban green space built on an old railway line, elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side with views of the city to the Hudson River. Focus is practical and aesthetic. Piet Oudolf designed planting schemes, with trees and verdant gardens. Free afternoon; option to visit Chelsea Market Manhattan, a great place to eat as well as shop, a true New York experience.

A guided tour this morning of Central Park designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, with attractions spread throughout its 843 acres of landscape. There are sprawling waters, green meadows, bridges, performance space, educational facilities, Central Park Zoo and Wildlife Centre, gardens and classical architecture. But above all else, this is a recreation space for the people of New York, one of the busiest cities in the world. The Conservatory Gardens are magical when the crab apples and the wisteria pergola are in bloom. There are three gardens, one on either side of the central wisteria-pergola garden. Bryant Park is delightful with sophisticated gardens flanking a large lawn and throngs of joyful New Yorkers on countless ‘French’ bistro chairs. Free afternoon.

We are heading to Providence, capital of the State of Rhode Island, a quintessential New England town. Morning visit to Hollister House and garden in the English Arts and Crafts style. Travel on to Providence. Dinner included this evening.

Omni Hotel , Providence Rhode Island

Morning visit to the Newport Flower Show, presented in the Marble House (1888-1892), built for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt in the ‘Beaux Arts style’, an eclectic style of architecture inspired by classic architecture and promoted by American graduates of the École des Beaux Arts (School of Fine Arts) in Paris. The style was popular in the late 19th century among America’s wealthy industrialists. On show will be floral designs, garden displays, horticulture exhibits, shopping opportunities, lectures and demonstrations. Free time in Newport for lunch. Afternoon visit The Breakers, the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial pre-eminence in the Gilded Age. Take the scenic Ocean Drive, 10 miles of commanding coastline before we return to Providence.

A coastal Rhode Island garden this morning, The Sakonnet Garden, private and highly individual, with unique design ideas, superb plant selection and exquisite planting schemes. Travel in to Boston this afternoon with a walking tour of the Old Town. Check in to our hotel.

Park Plaza Hotel, Boston

Morning visit to Harvard University’s Museum of Natural History and the Glass Flower collection. Guided walk of Boston’s Historic Emerald Necklace, an 1,100-acre chain of green spaces. Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour  (Long Beach, California)

May 6 and 7

Mary Lou Heard was a passionate horticulturist who created a garden tour in 1993 to highlight the small gardens cultivated by local homeowners. Every year brings more fans to this self-guided tour of “real gardens by real people,” tucked into Long Beach’s neighborhoods. This year’s event includes  44 home gardens , 13 of them new to the tour. This year will also feature drought-tolerant gardens in an effort to reflect California’s changing climate. No tickets are required for the two-day event (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), but donations are accepted at each of the locations (funds go to the Sheepfold, a shelter that helps women with minor children in crisis).

Tulip Time Festival  (Holland, Michigan)

In spring this Michigan city rivals its namesake in the Netherlands with millions of  colorful tulips  filling its fields and parks for the public to enjoy for free. At the Window on the Waterfront Park, take photos next to the life-size statues in traditional Dutch dress and stroll walking paths through acres of tulip fields and beds. In addition to free activities, there’s Veldheer’s Tulip Gardens and De Klomp Wooden Shoe & Delft Factory, where you can watch artists hand-carve your own traditional wooden shoes from a block of poplar wood or hand paint blue and white Delftware pottery. horses stand in a field of blue bonnet flowers in ennis texas

Ennis Bluebonnet Trails and Festival  (Ennis, Texas)

The bluebonnet, a wildflower that blankets the fields, meadows and rural roads throughout the Lone Star state, holds the title of state flower. And the small town of Ennis, a 36-minute drive south of Dallas, has the Texas Bluebonnet Trail and is the self-proclaimed  "Bluebonnet City of Texas .” The bluebonnets peak in mid-April but since they are a natural occurrence, their blooms may not be in the same exact place year to year. (The locals defer to Mother Nature each year on the best trail sightings.) People trek from all over the country for the Bluebonnet Trails opening (April 1) and the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival, a weekend of music and activities celebrating the beautiful blue wildflower (April 14–16). To explore the trails, download the map for self-guided driving tours. All events are free.

gamble garden spring tour in palo alto california

Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden Historic Home Spring Garden Tour  (Palo Alto, California)

April 28 and 29

In 1902, when the Gamble House was built, the city of Palo Alto was considerably smaller, with a population of 3,000 compared with 69,000 today. Thanks to the Garden Club of Palo Alto, which assisted in creating a nonprofit organization to restore the garden and maintain the buildings, the Gamble House and garden continues on as a beautiful example of Colonial-Georgian Revival architecture, complete with restored gardens of the era. The original family gardener, Elizabeth F. Gamble, was well known for her love of flowers and her extensive collection of prized camellias. While you can take a free self-guided tour anytime, during the spring tour  you can see what a restored 1900 garden looks like, from camellias, roses and wisteria to the front lawn’s three surviving Canary Island date palms. Live music, a silent auction and special shopping experiences are part of the tour admission. Plus, five private Palo Alto gardens will be open for tours April 28 and April 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Note: The private gardens on the tour are not wheelchair accessible, but all activities at Gamble Garden are fully accessible. Admission includes the five garden tours; $30 for members, $45 nonmembers; $50 at the door.

Gardens in USA

America is strong in landscape architecture but not quite such a leader in garden design. Americans tend to be a garden-loving people who do not have a great love of gardening. The climate tends to be too hot or too cold for working in gardens to be as much of a pleasure as it is in the gardens of Northern Europe. America also has a lack of aristocratic garden estates and many of America’s public gardens are run as publicly-funded botanic gardens. In addition to these American Garden Finder entries, please see Garden Tours in America for information on tours, self-guided visits, tailor-made tours and gardens open to the public in USA.

" — Kathy and Greg Stern, Jefferson, Maryland

Dear Garden Enthusiast,

Welcome to COOPERSMITH'S, North America's oldest and most trusted international garden and stately-home tour company, now in our 40th year of crafting One-of-a-Kind Tours® for the discerning traveler.

Over the years, people have asked me, “What made you decide to go into the tour business?” My answer, simply put, is that travel has been in my blood for as long as I can remember. Having grown up in New Jersey, some of my fondest childhood memories were the car trips our family took to places like Niagara Falls, Smokey Mountains, and Williamsburg. While in high school, I savored week-long bicycle tours in Nova Scotia and Martha’s Vineyard.

Later, while attending the University of California, Berkeley, I hitchhiked annually between West and East coasts. Upon graduating, I set out for Europe, where I thumbed my way around the Continent for six months before settling in London. In the ensuing three years, I researched and wrote a guide book for like-minded travelers ( Rule of Thumb: A Hitchhiker’s Handbook , Simon & Schuster, 1973).

Back in Berkeley, where I supported my travel habit by working for over ten years as a landscape gardener, contractor, and garden designer, I co-founded A Taste of Britain, later to be renamed COOPERSMITH'S One-of-a-Kind Tours®. My passion was, and still is, crafting unique, small-group, upscale garden and manor-house tours that I, myself, would feel comfortable being part of.

The following elements have always formed the foundation for those tours:

World-class tour leaders, with a minimum of ten years' experience in the field

Exceptional gardens, featuring private tours by owners and head gardeners

Small groups: as few as six and never more than 20 participants

Relaxed pace: on average, one visit in the morning, and one in the afternoon

Limited time on the motorcoach, with plenty of extra seats

In-depth focus on one or two regions of one country

Four-to-seven-nights in atmospheric country inns and manor-house hotels

Gourmet meals, often locally-sourced

Now, four decades later, we’re still going strong. Our tours typically fill up 12 to 18 months in advance. We have dozens of clients who travel with us on a regular basis, some up to two or even three times a year. I love what one of our clients once wrote on his feedback form: "Going on a COOPERSMITH'S tour," he said, "is like taking part in a traveling house party, focusing on beautiful homes and gardens, with Jeeves doing all the work!"

When people go on a COOPERSMITH'S tour, odds are they’ll be signing up for another one soon - sometimes even before finishing the one they’re on! Come join us in 2024 and help us celebrate our forty years in the business. And see for yourself what makes our tours truly One-of-a-Kind®!

Happy travels,

"A company that specializes in small groups [where members] are often taken to private gardens rarely seen..." — The New York Times

"My wife recently had the good fortune to meet and speak with [famous English horticulturalist] Penelope Hobhouse, who recommended your garden tour as one of the two best in Europe..." — Collier Espy, Jr., Dothan, Alabama

13 Magnificent Private Gardens

An informal sense of an American country landscape was the desired aesthetic for this New Jersey garden which includes French formal boxwood plantings, English borders and an interplay between trees and allees. This is one of the more than 350 gardens included in The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program which features private gardens not normally open to the public and is America’s only private garden-visiting program of its kind.

Take a Tour of Martha's Most Beautiful Gardens—and Learn How She Created Each One

From her first home to her current estate in Bedford, N.Y., Martha has dedicated much of her life to creating stunning landscapes along the East Coast.

Melissa Ozawa is the features editor at Martha Stewart Living.

american garden tours

When Martha was four years old, her father handed her a screwdriver and showed her how to wiggle it between the cracks of a cobblestone path in their Nutley, New Jersey, yard to dig out a weed. Within a few hours, she'd cleared the whole path and discovered a lifelong passion for gardening.

Since then, she has filled acres of landscape with everything from colorful perennial borders and fruit trees to thriving rose bushes and an allée of boxwoods. Here, she walks us through four of her homes—past and present—that have shaped her as a gardener, and shares the decisions and details that make each one spectacular.

Turkey Hill: Westport, Connecticut

As a young mom in 1971, Martha moved with her family to Westport, Connecticut, where she embarked on the ultimate DIY project: fixing up a 1805 farmhouse and creating an unforgettable landscape. She started Turkey Hiwith two acres and gradually expanded to six as adjacent properties came up for sale. Those years spent planting and tending perennial borders , orchards, herbs, and a potager gave her what she calls a "college education" in gardening. "I would not be who I am today without the vast knowledge I gained there, on that small bit of paradise," she wrote when she sold the property in 2007.

"My advice to new gardeners is to go to nurseries and find something you love, and just start digging and planting," Martha says. "You're bound to make mistakes—I make lots—but you'll learn from them, and you can always dig up a plant and try again."

Turkey Hill: Colorful Blooms

As she expanded the gardens at Turkey Hill, Martha leaned into creating a colorful palette. "I never thought I would love so much color," Martha says. "But seeing Monet's garden at Giverny in all its glory blew my mind." She planted an exuberant sea of blooms at Turkey Hill that unfurled from April through October. Here, clusters of tulips and daffodils blend with sweet pink bleeding hearts that jubilantly trumpet spring.

Mixing lots of different hues is challenging—shades can clash and overwhelm. One of Martha's secrets is to stick with tried-and-true varieties. "There are certain old plants that you can't get wrong combining, like purple Higo and Siberian irises, orangey-red and pink Oriental poppies, and columbines," she says. "Put them together, and you have a magnificent tableau that you couldn't get with other plants."

Turkey Hill: Vining Plants

Martha is a fan of vining plants— specifically clematis . "The fragrance of pink Clematis montana var. rubens is one of the best smells ever," she says. "I planted it so the vines would cover my kitchen pergola."

Turkey Hill: Pool Wisteria

A narrow path led from the house to the pool, which was framed by a stone wall and perennial borders. A wisteria tree marked the entrance.

Lily Pond: East Hampton, New York

Martha considers her former beach retreat in East Hampton, New York—which she purchased in 1990 and sold a few years ago —a revelation. "Everything grew so easily! It was such a joy to garden there," she says. Amazed at the way plants flourished in the rich, silty loam and mild coastal climate, she filled her yard at Lily Pond with a riot of roses , including heirlooms, climbers, and English varieties. Before she sold the property, she transplanted them to her current estate in Bedford, New York, giving her grandchildren a thorn-free space in which to play outside the house.

Lily Pond: Foliage Galore

After Hurricane Sandy destroyed trees and plants in the sideyard, Martha decided to rethink this stretch. Keeping the palette tight, she layered the beds on either side with varieties of cut-leaved Japanese maples, such as Acer palmatum var. dissectum "Red Dragon," and a mix of perennials, from feathery ferns to large-leaved hostas. With the exception of a few blooms, like lush stands of white hydrangeas, foliage reigns over flowers. "It's now a beautiful contemplative garden," she says.

Lily Pond: Gravel Path

The gravel path in the shady side garden leads to an elegant latticed gate, which opens to the property's backyard and pool.

Lily Pond: Container Plants

A large strawberry pot (with pockets on the sides) filled with giant alocasia, purple scaevola, chartreuse creeping Jenny, and trailing silver dichondra sits by the pool.

Lily Pond: Moss-Covered Walkway

This mossy brick walkway runs behind the pool and is flanked by tall hornbeam hedges, low-growing ferns, and bright hostas.

Bedford: Bedford, New York

When Martha bought this 153-acre property in 2000, she found herself in vast, empty fields with only a small smattering of trees—"a blank canvas," she says. Today, Bedford is bursting with flora and fauna. She's planted a dramatic boxwood allée, thousands of trees ( including a fruit orchard ), prolific plots of vegetables , flowers, and shade plants . She also fenced off paddocks for her horses and donkeys, added greenhouses, and built a pool.

"My father taught me that you can do it all from scratch, starting from seeds or cuttings, and if you nurture them, they will produce," Martha says. "I still do this: I grow trees from saplings and boxwood from rooted cuttings, and pretty much all my flowers are from seeds sown in the greenhouse. I enjoy seeing them develop. I think a gardener learns more this way."

Bedford: Daffodils Galore

Martha's farm is always evolving, she says. Storms take down trees, turning a shady spot into a sunny one. Overly vigorous plants get pulled and alter the look of a border, pests force plots to move, and new interests ignite a flurry of plantings. And that's the thrill of gardening: You are constantly learning and adapting.

To create this swath of daffodils, Martha mapped out waves of cultivars, plotting about 100 bulbs in each group. Every spring, the flowers explode in drifts of yellow and white, multiplying each year.

Bedford: Border Garden

Before it became unwieldy and took over her pergola border , purple nepeta grew beautifully on Martha's property. It's since been replaced with more alliums, Camassia, and grape hyacinth, and she's edged the front with small boxwood shrubs she raised from cuttings.

Bedford: Dappled Shade

Two weeping katsura trees provide dappled shade for white alliums, clematis, and peonies.

Bedford: Autumn Colors

In fall, the farm is ablaze in gold and red foliage.

Bedford: A Variety of Plants

Every January, Martha dives into a stack of seed and plant catalogs to find unusual cultivars and species to grow next. "For me, gardening is all about scent, color, and variety, variety, and more variety," she says. Instead of ordering just one type of baptisia, for instance, she'll choose several to try out new colors and test cultivars to see how they fare. In her flower garden—which is inspired by Turkey Hill's—she fills the beds with multiple kinds of roses, irises, dianthus, phlox, columbines, and self-seeding poppies, which have the "nicest way of popping up in unexpected places," she says.

Bedford: Potted Begonias

One side of Martha's greenhouse is devoted to all kinds of begonias—tuberous, rex, semperflorens, fibrous, and her favorite, rhizomatous.

Bedford: Boxwood Allée

A 650-foot allée of undulating boxwood lines the path to the stables. She prunes the shrubs every autumn to keep them comely.

Bedford: Winter Care

At the start of winter, Martha's gardeners shroud her boxwoods in burlap to protect them from strong winds and heavy snow.

Skylands: Mount Desert Island, Maine

In 1997, Martha purchased her summer home on Mount Desert Island in Maine. "This is the only place I ever bought that had an established garden," she says. Designed in the 1920s by Danish-born landscape architect Jens Jensen for Edsel and Eleanor Ford, the property is filled with fir and spruce trees towering over carpets of moss , stone pools, meandering paths, and mile-long driveways that vanish into the scenery. Martha takes her responsibility as a steward of this American treasure seriously: "I revel in the fact that I have a landscape designed by someone of such importance, who in my mind made absolutely no mistakes whatsoever," she says.

Martha spends several weeks each summer at Skylands with her family and plenty of friends. "I love to water the plants in the early morning, or walk around and just take it all in," she says.

Skylands: Potting Overwintered Plants

Every year at the end of May, Martha heads north with a truck loaded with trays of small succulents and large agaves, aloes, and palms that she has propagated and overwintered in her Bedford greenhouses. She and a group of green-thumbed friends make a weekend of it, potting Martha's containers on the "cracked ice" terrace.

Skylands: Circular Driveway

The circular driveway at the entrance of the house encircles an abundance of greenery in various hues, heights, and textures.

Skylands: Statement Plants

A detail of a granite trough planted with echeveria and senecio.

Skylands: Scenic Views

When the sky is clear, Martha can see Seal Harbor from the terraces of the house, which was designed by New York architect Duncan Candler.

Skylands: Lillies and Sphynx "Guards"

Martha Stewart

Lilies fill Martha's large terrace, which she says is "guarded" by two glazed terra-cotta sphinxes designed by Émile Muller in the 19th century. "The two are stored indoors and taken out as soon as the warmer weather arrives," she says.

Skylands: White-Pine Needles

Martha covers the paths in white-pine needles every spring (a local tradition). The coppery color complements the bright-green moss.

Skylands: Cutting Garden

Martha uses the walled cutting garden to grow vegetables for fresh summer meals, as well as flowers like dahlias, snap-dragons, and lilies for arrangements .

Skylands: Sculptural Design

La Rivière , a bronze sculpture by French artist Aristide Maillol, rests below the stone terrace in a bed of ferns, moss, and other lush ground covers.

Your Botanic Summer Road Trip

The New England Edition

map

Published May 31, 2024

Summer has long been synonymous with road trips, and we can’t imagine that this coming summer will be any different. There are many reasons to pack up the car and get on the open road–family visits, beach destinations, the thrill of adventure, to name just a few. We’d like to offer one more: discovering new botanic gardens and all the plant wonders they have to offer.

One of your benefits as a Friend of the Botanic Garden of Smith College is free or reduced entry at over 300 gardens nationwide through the American Horticultural Society’s Reciprocal Admissions Program. It’s like a passport to public gardens across North America. A passport we encourage you to fill with stamps.

Individual memberships get one entry to participating gardens, and family memberships will get at least two. Be sure to check with individual gardens for details. All members have access to this benefit, no matter where in the country you’re located, so be sure to check your state for participating gardens at the American Horticultural Society website. But if you’re located near us in Western Massachusetts, we’ve highlighted some of our favorite New England botanic gardens that are free to you and well worth taking a day or overnight trip to discover.

Almost all of these gardens would make for a lovely day-trip destination from Western Massachusetts. If you’re looking for a grander adventure, we’ve mapped out three road-trip journeys: the Northern New England Tour which hits the coast of Maine, the Lower New England Tour which dips into Connecticut, and the Eastern Mass Tour because there are so many public gardens worth visiting in this part of the state. Each of these road trips offers at least three gardens to explore, and guarantees loads of botanical beauty to fill your summer.

Justin Morrill State Historic Site Gardens Strafford, Vermont The grounds at the Justin Morrill Homestead are defined by circuitous serpentine walkways, arabesque beds planted with colorful annuals, and historic specimen trees including a Magnolia kobus and the oldest Norway spruce in Vermont. The homestead is open for guided tours Thursday-Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 26 through October 8.

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Boothbay, Maine Yes, it is a bit of a drive to make your way to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens from Western Massachusetts, but we can’t think of a better garden to plan an overnight trip around. Located on over 300 acres along the Midcoast, this garden is a true Maine experience. Some of the highlights you’ll see on your visit are the Vayo Meditation Garden, a dahlia garden, and the Native Butterfly House—a 2,160-square-foot Gothic-style hoop house featuring a planting scheme dedicated to supporting the life cycles of moths and butterflies native to New England.

bedrock

Bedrock Gardens Lee, New Hampshire On a 30-acre former dairy farm, the creators Jill Nooney and Bob Munger designed and constructed a 20-acre garden notable for the variety of plants collected over the past 30 years. Original garden design features—including a fernery, the Dark Woods, the Wiggle Waggle water channel and the large Torii pergola in the middle of the 400-foot Allée—as well as many varied sculptures are found throughout the gardens. The main path, designed as a journey, winds its way through all these features.

Lower New England Tour

berkshire

Berkshire Botanical Garden Stockbridge, Massachusetts Berkshire Botanical Garden encompasses 24 acres of gardens. The vast display of plants is a testament to the garden’s long history, having been established in 1934. Some of the highlights you’ll see on your visit are the contemplative Pond Garden, the historic 1937 Herb Garden, the Foster Rock Garden, and native plant gardens. Overall, the garden features over 3,000 species and varieties of herbaceous and woody plants.

the mount

The Mount, Edith Wharton’s Home Lenox, Massachusetts Edith Wharton’s estate at The Mount showcases traditional French, Italian and English design—evident both in the architecture of the home and the gardens. Here you’ll find sunken Italian gardens, formal French flower gardens, and even a rock garden. If you’re in the area, you’ll definitely want to add this stop to your itinerary and take a guided tour and/or the self-guided audio tour for a richer experience.

Connecticut College Arboretum
 New London, Connecticut
The Connecticut College campus is home to a stunning arboretum which consists of 750 acres of plant collections. Some of these collections include the Native Plant Collection, the Caroline Black Garden, and the Campus Landscape
and Greenhouse (all have interactive online maps to make exploring them even more engaging). There are also natural areas to explore like Mamacoke Island.

Eastern Mass Tour

tower hill

New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill Boylston, Massachusetts New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill spans 171 acres. This expansive garden has something for everyone, such as its Garden of Inspiration, which is a formal garden with influences from historic French garden design, Pliny’s Allée, made up of a regal row of oak trees underplanted with lovely fothergilla, sweetspire and witch hazel, and the Wildlife Refuge Pond, which has a lovely viewing pavilion.

turtle

Garden in the Woods Framingham, Massachusetts For an immersive native plant experience, nothing beats a visit to Garden in the Woods (headquarters of Native Plant Trust). On these 45 acres, you’ll come across hundreds of plant species native to New England (as well as historical species from across North America). Throughout the both highly cultivated and minimally managed environments you’ll also come across a brook, a pond and lovely wetlands.

cherry tree

Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University Boston, Massachusetts The Arnold Arboretum is a full-day experience. This 281-acre preserve of trees and woody plants in the heart of Boston has been an aesthetic and educational resource since it was founded in 1872. Like our garden, the Arnold was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and is committed to the Olmstedian principle that everyone is entitled to open space. A research museum set in a public park, its gates are open to everyone, every day, free of charge

kousa

Mary May Binney Wakefield Arboretum Milton, Massachusetts The Mary May Binney Wakefield Arboretum spans over 22 acres in Eastern Massachusetts and features formal gardens, orchards, woodlands and wetlands. We recommend making the trip during the month of June, when over 300 kousa dogwood trees are in flower. They call this time of year the Dogwood Days. We call it the best reason to get on the road.

DOWAGIAC — Guests attending the Dowagiac Area History Musem’s Spring Lecture Series finale Wednesday were presented with a sneak peak of a highly anticipated event.

Eileen Crouse of the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce Home Tour Committee discussed the six properties on this year’s Dowagiac Home and Garden Tour, which returns Saturday, June 22.

Crouse and local historian Corey Crocker presented the homes on this year’s tour, their interesting histories, and some fun facts about the people who lived there.

This year’s Home and Garden Tour features six properties, including the Arthur Beckwith house on Oak Street, the Blish House on Center Street, the Hubbard House on Main Street, the Cullinane House on Indian Lake Road and a rare viewing of the upstairs of the Wounded Minnow. Another highlight will be the Rockery on High Street, built by Fred and Kate Beckwith Lee in the 1890s. Most of the properties on tour have steep stairs visitors should be mindful of.

The tour is self-guided and takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets must be purchased to enter the homes. According to Crouse, the reception regarding the tour has been positive. As of Wednesday night, the tour had pre-sold 110 tickets. Last year’s event drew more than 400 guests.

The tour committee is chaired by Crouse and includes Alicea Rodriguez Cole, Allexia Money, Dana Sandoval, Jessica Shank, Zena Burns, and Ruth Ausra. Local historians Corey Crocker and Pamela Oliverez are providing research and background information on the homes.

Tickets are available online via the chamber website, under Events at dowagiacchamber.com, Imperial Furniture, 57530 M-51 South and at Cottage Gallery, 126 S. Front St., Dowagiac. Advance tickets are priced at $15, with day-of-tour tickets available for $20. All attendees must check in at the Dowagiac Area History Museum on June 22 to show proof of ticket purchase, or buy tickets, in order to receive the wristband that will allow entry to the tour homes, a list of addresses and tour map.

Individuals interested in volunteering for docent duties, which includes one free ticket, can contact Home Tour committee member Jessica Shank at [email protected] .

On a Journey to the Past at Old Westbury House and Gardens

Explore a world of timeless elegance at Old Westbury Gardens, a historic mansion turned into a museum home that nowadays offers guided tours, concerts, special exhibitions and more.

Ilse Castrejon

Balancing the towering skyscrapers that highlight New York’s skyline, Old Westbury House and it’s gardens invites you to step back in time and peek into New York’s opulent past.

Built in 1906 to fulfill a promise, this 200-acre home is better known today as a museum with a collection of priceless English antiques . While others might recognize it as a venue for concerts, shows, and cultural festivals.

Background on Old Westbury House

The mansion’s story goes like this: when John S. Phipps married Margarita Grace, he promised her a home in New York which would be similar to her family home in England . The result was the a 200 acres mansion now known as Old Westbury. The couple and their 4 children lived there until the estate opened it to the public in 1959.

Westbury House is a Charles II-style mansion with a red-brick and limestone accented façade. It is surrounded by formal gardens, beautiful ponds, pathways, and landscaped grounds.

The mansion has 23 rooms which house several fine antiques including furniture and artwork . A painting of Mrs. Henry Phipps and her grandson Winston is one of the highlights of the collection.

The gardens at Old Westbury are works of art in their own right. On your next visit be sure to see the Walled Garden and the Lilac walk , the ponds, the primrose path and beautifully landscaped areas that bloom from spring to fall. Don’t miss the Thatched Cottage – which was built as a child’s playhouse!

The house and its gardens have been featured in countless photographs, over 25 movies, and dozens of television shows.

Old Westbury Gardens

Where is Old Westbury Gardens and how can you get there?

The Old Westbury estate is located at 71 Old Westbury Road between the I-495 Expressway and the Jericho Turnpike. It’s about 20 miles east of New York City. Think of your visit as a day trip out of the city.

If needed, special parking is available for visitors with state-issued handicap parking. If you don’t have a permit, you can drop off the visitor at the mansion and then return to the parking lot. But note that the walk from the parking area to the mansion can be quite steep, and it isn’t short. Buses for group tours may enter from 60 Post Road.

Therefore, taking public transport can be more convenient. The Long Island Rail Road stops at the Westbury station from where you could take a taxi to your destination.

What should you expect when you visit?

Old Westbury Gardens attracts horticultural enthusiasts, art students and families. Nevertheless, you should keep in mind that it’s only open for visitors between April and October . You can take a guided tour of the property or wander through the 23 rooms and the gardens on your own.

With so much history and beauty inside and outside the house, Old Westbury Gardens is popular with children and adults. Apart from people on family outings, Old Westbury is popular as a venue for cultural events, weddings, outdoor photography sessions, and educational workshops.

To avoid these crowds and enjoy a more relaxed experience, plan your visit on a weekday in the latter half of the day.

Preserving the Old Westbury Gardens is a priority and – from time to time – some sections may be temporarily closed for restorations.

All tickets (except for Old Westbury Gardens members and library pass holders) must be purchased in advance ; although, children under the age of 6 have free admission to the venue. Furthermore, Old Westbury Gardens also participates in many discount ticketing programs.

Old Westbury Gardens

What else can you do when you visit Old Westbury Gardens?

Old Westbury Gardens hosts educational and cultural events of all kinds for children and adults. There are painting workshops, yoga and tai-chi sessions, extended tours, gardening programs and more. You can also enjoy a picnic on the north lawn or grab a bite at the Café in the Woods. Before you leave, don’t forget to buy a souvenir at the Estate gift shop.

Nearby, don’t miss the chance to explore the charming village of Old Westbury or visit the picturesque Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park for more outdoor adventures.

Can you schedule a professional photoshoot?

Yes, you can schedule a professional photoshoot for headshots, an engagement, wedding, prom, etc.

Are service animals allowed at Old Westbury Gardens?

While pets are not allowed on the premises, service animals are welcome .

What are visitor timings?

It is open every day except Tuesday from 10 am to 6 pm, with a half-hour lunch break from 1 pm to 1.30 pm.

A historic mansion nestled in lush gardens, Old Westbury House and Gardens promises an unforgettable experience. From the opulent mansion and beautiful landscaped gardens to the array of cultural events and activities, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Spend the day here and immerse yourself in an era gone by.

Cyndi Lauper announces 2024 ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ tour. Get tickets

Girls just wanna have fun…and put on farewell tours.

New Wave and pop icon Cyndi Lauper announced she’s taking her sizable stable of hits — who could forget “Time After Time,” “True Colors” and “Goonies R Good Enough” — to arenas all over North America for her 2024 farewell ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Tour.’

That includes a stop at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Special guests will be announced at a later date.

This nationwide jaunt comes on the heels of the release of the new Paramount+ Cyndi Lauper documentary “Let The Canary Sing,” which hits the streamer on Tuesday, June 4.

However, if you want to see her “have fun” in person, tickets for all ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ concerts are available as soon as today.

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming shows on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale is Friday, June 7.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all North American tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

The last headlining gig Lauper played in the U.S. was back in July 2019 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl.

Here’s what she took to the stage that night, as confirmed by Set List FM :

01.) “All Through the Night” (Jules Shear cover)

02.) “I Drove All Night”

03.) “Unchained Melody” (Hy Zaret & Alex North cover)

04.) “She Bop”

05.) “Hope”

06.) “Shine”

07.) “Sally’s Pigeons”

08.) “I’m Gonna Be Strong” (Frankie Laine cover)

09.) “Time After Time”

10.) “Money Changes Everything” (The Brains cover)

11.) “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”

12.) “A Part Hate”

13.) “True Colors”

On Tuesday, June 4, “Let The Canary Sing” hits Paramount+.

According to a press release, the documentary will cover the pop star’s ascent from her Queens upbringing to the top of the pop charts in the 1980s and beyond.

About the project, director Alison Ellwood said, “Like many people, I assumed when Cyndi Lauper burst onto the music scene in the early ’80s, that she was another young star experiencing a meteoric rise to fame and success thanks to MTV. Her music videos were wild and colorful, her songs like ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ were infectious. But as it turns out, her story is one of hard knocks, hard work and dogged determination. Cyndi wanted her voice not just to be listened to, but a voice to be heard. The documentary will be a full portrait of Cyndi Lauper – her ‘True Colors’ shining through.”

The 70-year-old Lauper isn’t the only megastar from way back when on the road this year.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss live these next few months.

•  Pat Benatar

•  Taylor Dayne and Tiffany (Tiffany joins Dayne on select dates)
