“ Your ideal spot to shop for freshly harvested organic produce to promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle from the field to the palm of your hands .” Mazaraa Farm Shop

Looking for a new family-friendly activity in Abu Dhabi? Head down to Mazaraa Farm Shop, a hidden gem in Al Bahyah, that offers visitors a wholesome outdoor activity. There’s an array of fresh produce available to purchase, an outdoor cafe with specialty coffee and fun animal interactions for children.

Mazaraa Farm Shop and cafe are part of Abu Dhabi Organic Farms who are spearheading organic and sustainable farming methods with zero waste, the farm to fork concept that’s proving to be more and more popular with local consumers. Visitors are welcome to wander through the sunflower edged polytunnels where rows of crops are waiting to be harvested or alternatively purchased from the well stocked farm shop.

An abundance of well-priced colourful fruits and vegetables are grown and sold at the farm including tomatoes, sweet potatoes, chillies and eggplants to name a few alongside eggs, juices and jars of homemade pickles. There’s a good selection of olive oil, dates and honey but they are more pricey. The whole concept is well thought out and presented in the style of a traditional farm shop. It was somewhat disheartening that the tomatoes I bought were sold in plastic packaging and the free shopping bags were also plastic (bring your own bags or use the boxes provided).

Younger members of the family can enjoy meeting goats, rabbits, horses, ducks and chickens as well as picking some veggies while learning first hand about how the produce is grown. Highly recommend grabbing a delicious coffee, ice cream or acai bowl and relaxing in the aesthetically pleasing outdoor cafe.

While the farm shop and cafe are free to enter there’s an entrance fee (AED 25 per adult, AED 15 per child 4 & over) for the farm itself which includes complimentary water/juice and popcorn. Small dogs on leads are allowed in the outdoor areas. No advance booking is required but it does get busy at the weekends however to eat at the kitchen you do need to pre-book with the team.

Even with the harsh desert climate local farms are proving that it’s possible to grow a variety of organic fruit and vegetables here in the UAE. A visit to Mazaraa Farm Shop not only provides outdoor fun for all the family but also supports a local business and helps save the environment. A win, win all round.

At this Abu Dhabi farm, customers — and their children — do the harvesting

On the fringe of Abu Dhabi city lies an oasis that not only produces farm-fresh foodstuff but educates kids on sustainability. Sangeetha Swaroop pays a visit

2125041674.jpg

Tucked away on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi and less than an hour’s drive from Downtown Dubai, lies an idyllic spot where nature lovers, fresh produce enthusiasts and young children flock to every weekend. What brings them here every Saturday morning from late October to May is the promise of all things organic, local and sustainable, and an opportunity to stroll amidst nature, discover where the food we eat comes from, and partake in the simple delights of picking up veggies directly from the soil.

Spread out on approximately 16,000 sq m, in the laidback suburban town of Al Rahba, lies the organic Farm 182 that sees a flurry of activity when it opens its doors to the public every Saturday from 8am to 5pm during the heart of the growing season in the UAE. Here, the greyish sandy soil has been converted into pockets of fertile green strips creating a lush verdant paradise where colourful vegetables, fragrant herbs and leafy greens thrive. Not a mean feat in a region known for its harsh climate, water scarcity and soil salinity.

Al Rahba Organic Farm 182 belongs to the farm network of Integrated Green Resources UAE that have been producing and distributing organic vegetables in the UAE since 2008 on a total surface area of around 900,000 sq ft. Although the company has several farms including in Al Rahba, Al Khawaneej in Dubai, and in Al Ain, Farm 182 is the only one that is open to visitors, says Ronald Manjoro, Agricultural Engineer at IGR, who leads us on a tour of the premises.

At 10am, the place is abuzz with the cheery sounds of little kids, sporting around with paper bags that will soon be filled up with their choice of vegetables. We hear a rooster repeatedly crowing in the distance and cars stream in continuously onto the gravel path, bringing in couples and families. The regular visitors have brought their own shopping bags and baskets while others pick up paper bags at the market corner where small heaps of colourful vegetables are neatly laid out in wicker baskets. Vans from other farms belonging to the IGR network regularly replenish the stock with varied produce as the morning wears on.

abu dhabi farm visit

As we head out to the fields, Ronald tells us that both protected and open farming are practised at Farm 182, a certified organic farm by the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA). “We also follow EU regulations in our farming practices and hold audits every year to ensure that the right standards and principles of organic farming are consistently adhered to.”

While organic farming generally refers to the growing and nurturing of crops without the use of synthetic based fertilisers and conventional pesticides, there is a lot of speculation amongst consumers on whether a product is really organic or not, asserts Ronald. ‘Many are unclear what it really means while there are others who look at it as a marketing ploy. By following a certification system that verifies, inspects, and maintains record of practices and procedures, we are not only guaranteeing that this farm complies with the required regulations, but also instilling confidence in our consumers that the produce they pick here at the farm or at the outlets we retail are 100 per cent organic.’

Products sold with labels such as free-range, natural and locally grown do not necessarily have to be organic, he informs us. Neither are genetically modified organisms allowed on a certified organic farm. ‘We also rely on balanced agricultural principles like crop rotation, organic waste for manure and biological pest control to take care of our crops,’ he explains.

It is to the greenhouses that we make our way while Ronald cautions that it is not always open to the visitors so as to eliminate risks arising due to infiltrations of viruses, pests and other crop infections. ‘Pest management is vital to keeping greenhouse plants healthy,’ he says, ushering us into a fairly large climate-controlled space where deep orange, yellow, red, green and black bell peppers in varying stages of growth hang from every sapling planted there.

abu dhabi farm visit

‘Some vegetables such as capsicum, cucumber, beans and tomato grow better in protected environments such as greenhouses where the cool air keeps temperatures well below 30 degrees which is essential for their healthy growth,’ he explains as we make our way to the area where cucumbers are grown. We feast our eyes on a sea of sunny yellow flowers and admire the fruits developing with every pollinated flower. The somewhat triangular-shaped leaves, though, feel rough and prickly to the touch.

The humble cucumber, that is generally dipped, doused or dunked in salads and dressings, is harvested throughout the year, explains Ronald, as he plucks out a couple of juicy cucumbers from the vine. We sink our teeth into the waxy tender skin and savour its crispy, crunchy freshness. ‘Cucumbers are grown all over the UAE as it can withstand excessive heat. We pick them while they are still slightly immature — they are full of flavour at this stage of growth and contain no seeds.’

Ronald shows us rows of trays planted with saplings in its tiny cube-shaped receptacles, ready to be implanted into the soil as soon as they are well-rooted. It takes only 3 to 4 days for cucumber seeds to germinate in the trays, and it is transplanted into the firm soil after 8 to 10 days. The first harvest is ready within just 30 days and a single plant yields 900g to 1kg of cucumbers at a time, he adds.

abu dhabi farm visit

Pointing to sprouts of romaine lettuce, butterhead lettuce and papayas, he explains that one of the chief advantages of ‘growing crops in a greenhouse is that it allows us to extend the growing season and plant a wider variety of vegetables.’

We visit other greenhouses too where chillies and tomatoes in a varied range of colours are also grown. It is in the open fields that Ronald shows us the rows of freshly planted white and red potatoes that, he says, would be ready for harvest by end of January. The crops are planted directly in the sandy soil, he explains, which is then enriched with poultry manure and organic compost to ensure healthy and productive growth.

The farm runs on drip irrigation to both conserve water and improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture leading to higher yields, he informs us.

We then head to the compost area where we notice a large pile of shrivelled vegetables and wilted leaves. ‘All crop left overs, including plant cuttings and discarded vegetables are turned to organic compost,’ he explains. ‘Once it is broken down into small particles, it is turned every four days for aeration and left to decompose in the open air for several weeks or months. This organic matter conditions the sandy soil, helps retain moisture and is extremely nutrient-rich.’

slide

As we walk beside beds of coriander, parsley, mint and rucola, we notice that the crowd at the farm has swelled. One visitor checks the bright green corn husk before breaking it off from the stalk while another cuts a firm and shiny eggplant close to the stem with a small knife. Fresh stalks of spring onion can be seen peeping out from almost all the bags while there are many who are picking the tender leaves and pods off the drumstick (moringa) tree — a trending superfood at the moment.

Eight-year-old Lilia has come specifically to see the goats, she says, as she feeds them fresh corn leaves plucked from the field nearby. There are around 15 sheep and 30 goats including kids in the fenced-in pen and Lilia gently strokes and rubs the belly of a mother goat through the barrier.

We make our way through lush lime trees — not in season at the moment — and pass by the pigeon coop to venture out further into the farm where all at once the sight of light green fernlike fronds perks our interest. ‘This aromatic plant is the fennel that adds both flavour and layers of complexity to any dish,’ explains Ronald. ‘It takes around 8 to 10 weeks to produce a good-size bulb — which is what most people use, although the entire plant is edible.’

Alongside this green patch are rows of yet another superfood — kale and curly kale. Closely related to the cabbage family, their broad deep green leaves with curly edges are packed with proteins, minerals and vitamins. The white stemmed bok choy with their unblemished dark green leaf blades also pack a nutritional punch, he adds. ‘Popularly known as Chinese cabbage, both leaves and stems are edible.’

Yonder is a patch of Brussels sprouts which, explains Ronald, has been planted as a trial run. ‘We frequently experiment with growing different types of vegetables to know what will work here and what will not. One of the main challenges we face on the farm is to make available different types of produce for our customers throughout the harvest season. We field test various crops to increase the diversity within the farm and to also identify what is suited for the hot climate and saline soil conditions in the region.’

abu dhabi farm visit

Nearby, nestled amid tangled vines and underneath a canopy of large, dark green leaves are pumpkins of varied shapes and sizes, ripe and waiting to be picked and transformed into a nourishing soup or pie. The butternut squashes, marrow and celery are also ready to be snapped up, as are the different varieties of courgette. It is here that we meet Olivia, who is almost 6, and her two and a half-year-old brother Harry, searching for courgettes in the open field. ‘This is one of their favourite vegetables, and they love to eat what they pick at the farm,‘ says their father, Steve. His wife, Beth, adds, ‘Apart from getting them outdoors, visiting the farm also gets them involved in the whole process of making a healthy meal.’

When we move further out into the okra field, Ronald warns against walking through the crop. ‘You need to wear long sleeves and use gloves to harvest the pods as the tiny hairs on the plant can cause itching or irritate your skin.’

The cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage varieties at the farm still require more time for harvesting.

At the cash counter near the entrance, we notice that customers are adding more vegetables to their bags, apart from the ones they have picked. There are colourful okras and bell peppers and white, red and orange tender carrots with fluffy bright green tops. Eggs from the nearby hen coop are also available as are dates from the palms at the farm, and honey collected from its apiary.

Joshua, who has come in with his wife Ginger, son Jonah and two-year-old baby, says green beans and tomatoes are their all-time favourites at the farm. ‘We are regulars here; it’s a great way to spend time amid nature with the kids. More importantly, this is where they can learn and see for themselves where their food comes from. It is an important life lesson as they get to see the hard work and effort that goes into creating the food they eat every day.”

Jonah, he adds, enjoys picking his own choice of veggies and joins the family in the kitchen while preparing the dishes. ‘We always pick something we haven’t tried before, and experiment with new recipes. Visiting a farm and picking the fresh produce motivates you to eat a diverse range of vegetables.’

For Rana, a mum of a 7-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl, spending time on the farm with her children is a great way ‘to teach them to appreciate the gift of food especially as they see firsthand the amount of work that goes into growing food. My kids love to eat what they have picked — so now there is greater variety in their food choices for which I am grateful!’

abu dhabi farm visit

Being on the farm also makes them more aware of nature, she adds. ‘Every time we come here, it is a journey of exploration both for the kids and me.’

Desert Organic Farm, Wadi Al Amardi, Al Khawaneej

Homegrown cherry tomatoes in UAE farm

Specializing in harvesting more than fifty different crops over four hectares of land, the Desert Organic Farm relies on sustainable farming practices to grow fresh produce, which includes a large variety of fruits and vegetables. Depending on the cultivar, crops take 25 to 60 days from planting to the first harvest. Some plants, such as broccoli, continue to produce for the season; others, such as carrots, are phased in planting to ensure a continuous supply. The property also has date trees that grow different varieties of fruit, and visitors can also buy organic eggs, which are sold on-site.

My Farm Dubai is a self-sustaining, eco-farm that combines nature and technology to grow fruit and vegetables in the middle of the Dubai desert. Located in Al Khawaneej, the property also produces herbs, spices, and honey that visitors can harvest in group or private sessions during a two-hour weekly tour. Below Farms , Abu Dhabi

Finally, how about mushrooms? Below Farm’s fully automated controlled environment systems allow the team to grow mushrooms in the desert all year round. The indoor vertical farming technique has a seven-level stacked grow structure that requires minimal space, can be set up anywhere, and does not need arable land.

The team at Below Farm will shortly be offering unique visits to the farm, where guests can take home their mushroom grow kits. Starting February 25th, the team will offer bookable open farm days. For AED150, guests will get a tour, attend a mushroom BBQ tasting, and take home a mushroom home grow kit.

Greenheart Organic Farms , Sharjah

Greenheart is 100 per cent chemical free and grows over 180 different types of crops, specialising in organic produce and using sustainable practices like underground water reserves to water plants. The vegetables and fruit are harvested daily at the farm in Sharjah, reaching consumers within hours of being picked from the ground.

Additional Local UAE Farms

While unavailable for individual visits, there are other local and community farms to consider supporting. Consumers should be reminded that plant-based viruses and diseases are the biggest threat to organic farming. This is why many UAE farms restrict access and refrain from permitting customers to pick their own.

At Mary Anne’s Fresh Produce , the team is committed to bringing an incredible variety of products grown locally through sustainable methods. The UAE farm develops innovative products to help local chefs take their dishes to the next level. Products range from edible flowers to microgreens and specialty leaves.

Wherever you choose, there are abundant farms to choose from, visit, and support in the UAE!

Visiting Abu Dhabi with kids: theme parks, speed boats and farms

Feb 21, 2024 • 6 min read

Read on for the best activities and top planning tips for a family trip to Abu Dhabi © Cristian Negroni / 500px

Against a backdrop of golden sand and turquoise-lined islands, Abu Dhabi is packed to the dunes with kid-friendly adventures. And thanks to the traditional warm Arabian hospitality afforded to all visitors in this part of the world, families headed to the UAE capital can expect a warm welcome.

In fact, Abu Dhabi is an incredibly child-friendly destination where most hotels boast facilities just for little ones, with kids clubs, splash pools and kid-specific menus more common than not. As well as tons of child-specific attractions, Abu Dhabi has plenty for families to discover together. The city is also extremely safe, meaning parents can enjoy peace of mind while exploring with little ones in tow.

Is Abu Dhabi good for kids?

Abu Dhabi makes traveling with kids easy with family check-in desks at Abu Dhabi airport, baby changing facilities in most bathrooms and handy breastfeeding rooms in the city’s malls for nursing moms. Children are also welcome in most restaurants and bars, although check if there are evening restrictions if the venue serves alcohol. In fact, the only real challenge families will face in Abu Dhabi is the heat. How to beat it? Don’t come in summertime – and plan outdoor activities first thing in the morning or in early evening.

Where is best in Abu Dhabi for children?

Families trying to decide where to stay can consider Yas Island on the outskirts of the city, which is filled with theme parks galore. The waterfront Corniche is another good spot with a seemingly endless golden shoreline and plenty of nearby malls, restaurants and hotels.

A young boy climbing the fence at Al Zeina residential complex, Abu Dhabi, overlooking the channel that separates Yas Island.

The best things to do in Abu Dhabi with babies and toddlers

Go vegetable picking at mazara farm.

It may be the desert, but that doesn’t mean things don’t grow in Abu Dhabi, and a visit to Mazaraa Farm proves exactly that. The UAE’s first certified organic farm is perfect for little ones to try vegetable picking and to meet goats, donkeys, rabbits, horses and camels. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments in the farm’s boho-style cafe.

Spend the morning at Umm Al Emarat Park

One of the oldest green spaces in the city, Umm Al Emarat Park has a blooming botanical garden, water fountains and a music garden – where children can bang around on glockenspiels and bongos. On warmer days, make a beeline to the three-floored Shade House, which boasts brilliant views of the park and beyond. There are plenty of cafes and food trucks inside the park for when little ones get peckish.

Soak in culture at Manarat Al Saadiyat

Museums and galleries may not be traditionally baby-friendly, but there’s no reason to miss out on culture because you have kids in tow. Manarat Al Saadiyat hosts a revolving calendar of painting, photography and cinema exhibitions, and has a permanent outdoor space with a street-art-adorned skate park. The adjacent garden boasts six colorful public artworks and is a great place for kids to burn off some steam. Larte – a contemporary Italian eatery – is also located here, and has a bambino menu for kids and happy hour every weekday for the adults.

Decorative arches at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with a small group of visitors in the foreground

Best things to do in Abu Dhabi with kids

Visit the sheikh zayed grand mosque.

Sparkling crystal chandeliers, mirror-like pools and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet await in the 22,400-sq-meter (241,111-sq-ft)  Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque , Abu Dhabi’s most famous landmark. Free to visit, it’s a great learning opportunity for the whole family and complimentary tours will answer anything you ever wanted to know about the Islamic faith and Emirati culture. Unsurprisingly for the UAE, you reach and depart the mosque via a shopping mall which means there’s plenty of coffee shops around to rehydrate after your visit – no food or water is allowed inside the mosque.

Speed through the mangroves on a Rhino boat

Home to thousands of mangrove trees and over 60 bird species, the Mangrove National Park is Abu Dhabi’s most impressive natural asset. Head out on the water on specially modified speed boats known as Rhino Riders  and keep your eyes peeled for flamingoes, herons and turtles. A stop at a private sandy island and a dip in the water wrap up this fun experience that’s open to everyone aged three and older.

Get to grips with art at Louvre Abu Dhabi

France’s largest overseas cultural project can be found at Louvre Abu Dhabi . Fantastical architecture and a light-filled central dome house an impressive permanent collection. It’s also where travelers can find the Children’s Museum , the capital’s only child-specific museum. Here, little visitors get the chance to experience art through immersive workshops and activities. Aptitude Café is a good pick for refreshments afterwards, where the sunset views almost make up for the steep prices.

Visitors are zooming down a water slide on their stomachs at Yas Waterworld aquapark in Abu Dhabi

Best things to do in Abu Dhabi with teenagers and tweenagers

Explore yas island’s theme parks.

Yas Island is theme park central and a funnel of fun for kids of all ages. Ride the world’s fastest roller coaster at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi , or cool down at Yas Waterworld , where there are rides, slides and rapids galore. Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi , the world’s largest indoor theme park, is also here and has captivating themed “worlds” including Bedrock for littles, Cartoon Network for kids and Gotham City for teens.

Visit Abu Dhabi Falcon hospital

Specializing in the care of the UAE’s national bird, Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital welcomes visitors (aged five and over) wanting to find out more about these storied creatures. A two-hour tour explains the significance of falcons in traditional Bedouin culture and kids can watch the birds getting their talons trimmed and flying through an open aviary. If you’re lucky, you might even get to watch a bird surgery take place.

Get adventurous at Hudayriyat Island

Connected to Abu Dhabi via a huge suspension bridge, Hudayriyat Island is the place for outdoor adventures. With cycling and jogging tracks, sports courts, golden beaches and endless crystal-clear waters, teens can also show off their skills in the skate park, head out on the ocean via a Jet Ski, whizz across a mountain bike trail or tackle the largest permanent obstacle course in the UAE. Younger siblings will love the pirate-themed Splash & Climb park and there’s a host of cafes here, making it easy to find a place to dine for even the fussiest eaters.

Planning tips for traveling with children in Abu Dhabi

Have a chat with your kids to educate them about the UAE’s Muslim culture, especially if you plan to visit the Grand Mosque. Children are welcome here but it’s not appropriate for them to run around and make loud noises. This might not seem ideal but learning about the expectations of other cultures is a critical part of travel.

The Entertainer discount app might be worth purchasing if you plan to do lots of sightseeing as it’s filled with two-for-one offers to the city’s attractions, restaurants and leisure offerings.

Top 15 things to do in Abu Dhabi, from Yas Bay to Qasr Al Hosn

W hether you're new in the UAE , or a long-term resident looking for things to do, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about exploring Abu Dhabi.

The UAE capital has something for everyone , from indulging in culture via world-class art or exploring nature in the emirate’s mangroves , to spending the night at one of the city’s luxury hotels or taking the children for a day out at the theme parks on Yas Island.

Here are our top 15 places to visit in Abu Dhabi.

1. Dine and enjoy sunset views at Yas Bay

Whether you're looking for a place to go out with friends, somewhere to eat with family or just want a romantic dinner for two, there's plenty of choice at Yas Bay . The leisure and entertainment hub on Yas Island has a three-kilometre-long boardwalk with restaurants and sparkling views of the Arabian Gulf and Al Raha Beach skyline.

There's also Pier71, which features a number of restaurants such as Asia Asia, Daikan Izakaya and Paradiso , and sits opposite the five-star Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island . Meanwhile, for those who want to do more than eat, Cafe del Mare is an Ibiza-style beach club and Central has a bowling alley and arcade inside.

In addition to dining, there's also Etihad Arena , which hosts events such as concerts, stand-up gigs and UFC fight nights. During cooler months, it's also worth taking advantage of the public art installations which include new works by Kaws and Takashi , as well as oldies by Murakami Beastman, Fatspatrol, MonkeyBird, SupaKitch and four works of Astrocats by CoolrainLabo.

2. Explore Al Qana

The 2.4km-long waterfront destination houses a number of exciting restaurants and cafes. Whether you’re looking for a bite to eat or a place to go for a leisurely stroll, there’s plenty to do. It’s home to The National Aquarium , the biggest of its kind in the Middle East, and The Bridge Lifestyle Hub , an 8,000 square metre wellness space.

Opening soon is CinemaCity, which will house a 26-metre-wide screen and be one of the biggest in the city, and Pixoul Gaming , a massive eSports and virtual reality complex.

3. Enjoy the opulence of Emirates Palace

The five-star luxury hotel Emirates Palace still continues to be a draw ever since it opened in 2005. Now it is under new ownership, having transferred from Kempinski to Mandarin Oriental in 2020. The hotel is known for its opulence with a majority of its suites furnished in gold and marble.

Head to the hotel's cafe to enjoy a 23-karat gold-flaked cappuccino, a camel burger or afternoon tea. For those who aren't staying overnight, there are also a number of fine-dining spots such as Hakkasan, Talea by Antonio Guida, Martabaan by Hemant Oberoi, Las Brisas and Mezlai.

4. Learn more about the history of Abu Dhabi at Qasr Al Hosn

Discover the extraordinary history of Abu Dhabi by taking a visit to its oldest heritage site, Al Hosn, which has sections dating back to the 1760s. It also has Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest and most significant historic building in the capital, which housed the ruling family for centuries and was the emirate’s original seat of government.

The complex’s other major components include the Cultural Foundation , established in 1981 as the first multipurpose cultural centre in the UAE, and the House of Artisans , which is dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Emirati crafts and practices.

5. Have an adventure at West Bay Abu Dhabi

West Bay Abu Dhabi is a beach club and popular sundowner spot near the Corniche. For those wanting to dine, find venues such as West Bay Lounge, Blu Ocean Cafe and Escape Beach Bar.

Meanwhile, the space is also home to water sports activities, a beach restaurant, fitness centre and spa. There is an Adventure Park, too, which offers a zip line, rope course, wave pool and outdoor climbing park.

6. Visit Louvre Abu Dhabi

If it's culture you seek, then Louvre Abu Dhabi should be your first port of call on any visit to the emirate. Surrounded by the Arabian Gulf, the gleaming silver dome of the Arab world’s first global museum is almost otherworldly and effortlessly sets the scene for an afternoon admiring some of the world’s finest art. Inside, exhibitions change regularly with pieces often on loan from the world's most-visited museum, the Louvre in France.

The museum grounds are also a beautiful place for a stroll, with lots of al fresco exhibits to see and, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can sign up to kayak around the museum — tours leave nightly at sunset and require pre-booking. If you’re visiting with family, don’t miss the Children’s Museum, where you'll find hands-on, interactive exhibits. Children also enter free of charge, meaning it's not an expensive day out.

7. Wander Qasr Al Watan

One of the newer additions to the capital's cultural line-up is the breathtaking Qasr Al Watan , or the People’s Palace. Located on the seafront near Emirates Palace, the landmark is inside the presidential palace compound. Visitors can find out more about the UAE’s traditions and values by exploring this beautiful structure.

Wander the ornate hallways of the national palace, where there’s a host of exhibitions, artefacts and architecture on display. For something special, visit on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening to see the impressive Palace in Motion light and sound show.

If you’re visiting with little ones, be sure to get them set up with the children’s multimedia guide. This audio tour includes simplified explanations of the palace's treasures, interactive games and virtual badges to collect as they tour Qasr Al Watan, keeping them easily engaged.

8. Soak in nature at Jubail Mangrove Park

When the weather cools, one of the most serene places to do explore nature in the capital is on Jubail Island.

Start at the Jubail Mangrove Park , where you can wander over the waterways via a winding boardwalk, with various trails to choose from depending on how long you want your walk to be. Keep an eye out for local birds, fish and animals as you wander, stopping at the park’s floating platform for a better view of life under the water.

There are specially trained rangers on hand to answer any questions you may have about this sprawling mangroves habitat and you can also hop on a kayak to see some of the more hidden sections of this million-square-metre area.

If all that fresh air whets your appetite for a nature-inspired sleepover, book a room at Pura Eco Retreat , Abu Dhabi's first eco-resort. Here you can spend the night in a nature-surrounded dome with unrestricted access to Abu Dhabi’s mangroves or if you're not looking for a staycation, book a table to enjoy dinner by the waterside.

9. Marvel at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque needs to be on every Abu Dhabi itinerary. Dominating the skyline as you approach the capital, it’s one of the world’s largest mosques and has an open-door policy encouraging visitors of all faiths to come and see inside, and gain a deeper understanding of the emirate’s cultural and religious beliefs.

The sprawling landmark can hold up to 55,000 people at a time, and hourly tours are free of charge. The mosque took 10 years to build and has 82 white marble domes, 1,096 amethyst-and-jasper-embedded columns, gold-plated Swarovski chandeliers and a courtyard featuring one of the largest marble mosaic artworks in the world.

It’s also the Guinness World Record holder for the largest hand-woven carpet. The reflective pools around the outside of the mosque are a great place to take perfect shots.

10. Turn up the tempo on Yas Island

Crank up the action with a visit to Yas Island. Less than an hour from Dubai, this is the place to go for theme-park action in Abu Dhabi. If you’re coming for the weekend, the Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island is a great place to stay as guests get free theme-park tickets included with each booking.

Take your pick from world-class theme parks including Ferrari World Abu Dhabi , which is home to the world's fastest roller coaster, and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi which is made up of five lands – Metropolis; Gotham City; Cartoon Junction; Dynamite Gulch and Bedrock, all packed with rides, experiences, attractions and interactive games.

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi opened this year and features eight marine environments across a five-floor indoor venue, with more than 35 interactive experiences and rides, plus 17 dining options and 13 retail outlets.

Yas Waterworld offers family-friendly fun via rides such as Al Raha River or the Amwaj wave pool, and even pearl diving.

Also on the island is Yas Mall, where you'll find some great shopping and dining options as well as Clymb Abu Dhabi, home to the world's tallest indoor climbing wall. And if you're visiting next month, you could be among the first guests to stay at the world's first Warner Bros hotel . The WB Abu Dhabi opened to guests last year.

11. Enjoy pristine shorelines on Saadiyat Island

If it’s pristine shorelines and endless blue water that you crave, then Saadiyat Island should be on your to-do list. Spend a few nights on the island to really unwind; you'll have your choice of several five-star hotels including Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island, The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi and Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort. All of the hotels have gorgeous swimming pools, private stretches of beach and some top-notch places to dine.

If you’re not staying overnight, you can still enjoy the Saadiyat shoreline. Spend the day at Saadiayat Beach Club or head to Soul Beach, part of the Mamsha Al Saadiyat Community. Visits to this beach cost from Dh50 and include access to a kilometre of pristine shoreline, sun loungers with parasols and friendly staff ready to serve you ice-cold beverages and snacks.

While you're there, keep your eyes peeled for hawksbill turtles that nest on the beaches at certain times of the year, and there have also been dolphins spotted off the coast.

12. Make a night of it at Coya Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi often gets a reputation for being quiet and more family-oriented. And while it certainly does tick both those boxes if that's what you're looking for, there's also plenty of upscale restaurants and decent nightspots if you're seeking a more grown-up affair.

For fine dining and a fun night out in the heart of the city, complete with waterfront views and live entertainment, dinner at Coya Abu Dhabi is well worth considering.

Located in Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at The Galleria Al Maryah Island, the split-level restaurant offers a huge terrace overlooking the water that’s the perfect place to dine in the cooler months. Feast on delicious Latin American dishes paired with creative drinks that use herbs grown in the restaurant's on-site plant nursery.

If you want to get more hands-on, try the interactive masterclass where expert chefs will guide you through everything you need to know to be able to whip up several ceviches, Peru’s most famous dish. After dark, enjoy live entertainment and DJs in the brightly decorated bar.

13. Go-karting, boarding or shooting at Al Forsan

For a spot of adventure, include a stop at Al Forsan International Sports Resort on your itinerary. This sprawling activity centre offers wakeboarding, go-karting, shooting, horse-riding and more, with plenty on offer for the whole family. Karting fans will love the floodlit track which is packed full of hills, ramps and hairpin bends to keep races exciting.

Next door, the wakeboarding park offers some of the region's first cable ski lakes where beginners and advanced boarders can hone their skills in a purpose-built lake with artificial waves. You could also get some target practice under your belt or blow off steam with a shooting session. Inside the air-conditioned building, there is a 25-metre and a 50-metre indoor range, each with 10 lanes and a wide choice of guns.

14. Take a stroll along the Corniche

Stretching across eight kilometres in the heart of the capital, Abu Dhabi’s picturesque Corniche is a great place to enjoy the winter sunshine, talk a sunset stroll or have a family picnic by the ocean.

Sunseekers can enjoy the two-kilometre beach on the Corniche which is divided into three sections with areas for families, singles and larger groups. There are showers, changing rooms and cabanas available, and sun loungers and umbrellas can be hired for a fee. Sunbathers can enjoy views of the Arabian Gulf and Lulu Island, backed by towering palm trees.

If you're looking for something more active, there's several children’s play areas, cycle lanes and pedestrian pathways and free sports facilities, including five volleyball courts, two football pitches and three playing fields.

Rent a speedboat to see the Abu Dhabi skyline from the water or enjoy a bite to eat al fresco at the several cafes and restaurants dotted along the walkway. And if you walk to the very top of the Corniche you'll be at Emirates Palace , which is the place to go if you want to tick off sampling a gold-dusted cappuccino from your bucket list.

15. Savour the views from the Observation Deck At 300

While Dubai might be home to the world's tallest building, Abu Dhabi isn't afraid of heights, either. Observation Deck at 300, Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers , is the city's highest building. Perched 282 metres above the city, the glass-fronted restaurant is on the 74th floor of the hotel and offers amazing views of the capital with vistas over the Arabian Gulf, the Corniche and Emirates Palace.

Telescopes are available for zeroing in on any specific parts of the view you want to see in more detail, and if you time your visit for sunset, you're in for a treat. If tiny sandwiches, delicate cakes and hot-toasted scones are something you enjoy, the afternoon tea allows visitors to drink in the city views alongside a freshly brewed cuppa and a tiered platter of treats.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) has announced that the dates of the Eid Al Adha holiday for the private sector will be from Saturday, June 15, to Tuesday, June 18.

One paid holiday is given to mark Arafah Day, the holiest day in Islam, on Dhul Hijjah 9, as per the Hijri calendar. This falls on Saturday, June 15, in the Gregorian calendar.

Three days off are granted for Eid Al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, which is being observed from Dhul Hijjah 10 to 12 — or June 16 to 18 in the Gregorian calendar.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Employees in the public sector will also mark the holiday on the same dates.

The crescent of the month of Dhul Hijjah 1445 was photographed from Abu Dhabi on Friday, June 7.

On Thursday, authorities in Saudi Arabia announced that the crescent Moon was spotted, indicating that the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah begins on June 7. For the kingdom, Eid Al Adha will also begin on June 16.

Other countries — like Oman, India, and Pakistan — are marking the first day of the festival on June 17, based on Moon observations.
