Notes about Vieques Beaches

Please help out.

When you hit the beach,  please do your part to keep the beaches & island clean . The beaches don’t clean themselves, nor does the government clean them - real people like us clean them, sometimes in organized groups and sometimes we just do it when we visit the beach. If all you do is pick up your own trash we love it, but if you want to be a hero, pick up an extra bit as you leave, even if it is just a single plastic bag or a beer can.  Thank you so much for your help!  (PS. You can do this on any beach you visit, worldwide!)

Sea Turtles

If you need another reason to pick up trash, here's one: it harms our friendly & beautiful sea turtles! In Vieques, there are three major turtle species: Tinglar (Leatherback), Carey (Hawksbill), & Verde (Green), all wonderful in their own right. Nesting seasons run from March through September. So in addition to trash pickup,  please stay clear of the nests, hatchlings, and nesting females, and fill in holes and sandcastles on the sand . The turtles thank you! For more information, you can visit one of our favorite groups in Vieques,  Ticatove  (say tee-kah-toe-vay).

Some of the northside beaches we have listed are "short". By that I mean there isn't a lot of sand between the water and the jungle. And that means that a high tide can cover much or all of the sandy part with water! So for those beaches, we use this  tide-forecast site  and if it's a high tide, or on its way to high tide, we simply choose another beach. A few examples of these "short" beaches are  Starfish Beach ,  Airport Beach ,  Cemetery Beach , and  Sea Glass Beach .

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Vieques, Puerto Rico

This Caribbean island has secluded white-sand beaches and a bioluminescent bay — no passport required.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Things to do, best restaurants, areas to visit, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

On the island of Vieques, not a single stoplight stands between leafy, tropical hillsides and some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Wild horses roam free, waves glimmer with bioluminescence, and dramatic black sands welcome visitors to a Caribbean island that has escaped the test of time.

It's no wonder why Vieques has earned spots on  Travel + Leisure  readers' annual list of the best Caribbean islands  for several years running.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Stay at 14-room boutique hotel Finca Victoria — or book a retreat for a wellness-focused vacation.
  • Kayak around Mosquito Bay, known as one of the most vibrant bioluminescent bays in the world.
  • Explore the expansive and ecologically diverse Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Get a taste of modern Puerto Rican cuisine at Placita.
  • Visit between December and April for pleasant weather and a lively atmosphere.

Vieques is located just six miles off the coast of Puerto Rico and is a part of this U.S. territory, but in many ways, these islands couldn't be more different. "Puerto Rico has an infectious energy and vibrancy. But there's nothing like the deep connection to nature and profound relaxation you'll find in Vieques," says Sylvia DeMarco, the founder of the boutique hotel  Finca Victoria  located in the lush heart of the island.

An increased flight lift to the Caribbean is making reaching Vieques easier than ever -  no passport required for U.S. travelers . Read on for the insider guidance you'll need to plan a trip to the island that feels a world away.

Meet the Expert

Sylvia DeMarco is the founder of the boutique hotel Finca Victoria in Vieques.

Vieques has none of the chain hotels or beach resorts found in Puerto Rico, and it's all the better for it. Instead, tiny guesthouses and a slew of new boutique properties offer travelers an intimate connection to the island.

Finca Victoria

Perched on a lush hilltop in the center of Vieques,  Finca Victoria  is a modern retreat intimately intertwined with nature. This 14-room boutique hotel offers accommodations ranging from tree houses and cabins to a vintage airstream, all with a healthy dose of breezy Caribbean style and available for short stays or longer ayurvedic retreat experiences. This property made  T+L's list of the best new hotels in the world  the year it debuted.

El Blok  has the laid-back attitude of a Caribbean resort with all the style of a modern, design-forward city hotel. Steps from the beach and the oceanfront walkway in the heart of the lively town of Esperanza, El Blok is in the center of all the island's action. The hotel's rooftop pool and bar offer panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, making it one of the best places in Vieques to watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand.

Hacienda Tamarindo

Sweeping ocean vistas and tropical breezes await at  Hacienda Tamarindo , a small but mighty bed-and-breakfast lifted above the shores of southern Vieques. A swimming pool and hearty tropical breakfast are some of the perks of a stay, but the friendly service at this family-focused accommodation is the true highlight.

Kayak in bioluminescent Mosquito Bay.

The most famous attraction in Vieques is  Mosquito Bay , where phosphorescent plankton turn the waves into a sea of blue light at what is considered the most vibrant bioluminescent bay in the world. Local tour operators guide visitors by kayak through the glowing waters for an experience that can only be described as magical. Many travelers visit Vieques just to experience this phenomenon, though it's just the start of the island's natural wonders.

Sail, swim, and snorkel.

Getting out on the water is the best way to experience the island of Vieques. Vieques is also home to numerous unique diving sites, making it a haven for PADI-certified travelers. Local insiders from  PADI  recommend visiting Angel Reef, home to nearly pristine coral where divers can spot old Spanish anchors wedged among the rocks.

Hit the beach.

Even the island’s most idyllic shorelines are nearly empty during the high season. DeMarco recommends Punta Arenas on the island's northwest coast, as well as Caracas Beach, which landed a spot on  T+L's list of the best beaches in the Caribbean . Visitors can't come to Vieques without visiting the aptly named  Playa Negra, where jet-black sand  sets it apart from the rest of the island's powdery white shores.

Taste local rum.

No trip to the Caribbean is complete without sipping the local rum. Sample the local spirits at Crab Island Rum  Distillery, the small yet impressive operation that was the first-ever artisan rum distillery on Vieques. Take a tour or pop into the distillery's shop from Thursday through Saturday between 12 and 8 p.m. The party really gets started on Saturdays, when live music is also on tap.

Reset on a wellness retreat.

Finca Victoria is home to more than just beautiful boutique accommodations; it's also the first and only  ayurvedic retreat space  in the Caribbean. The hotel's bespoke panchakarma retreats last for a transformative 7-10 days, but the spa is open for massages, herbal baths, and Chinese medicine treatments even for those who aren't staying there.

Located on the beachfront in Esperanza,  El Quenepo  offers one of the few fine dining experiences on Vieques. An insistence on using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and the breezy, open-air dining space with Caribbean Sea views keeps it friendly and tropical. El Quenepo is open from Tuesday through Saturday, and reservations are required.

Hotel El Blok's restaurant  Placita  is among the most well-respected kitchens in Vieques. Executive chef Alex Espinal offers a menu of modern Puerto Rican cuisine that changes frequently based on the daily catch and ingredients available from local suppliers. The restaurant is open from Thursdays to Mondays, and reservations are recommended.

Hidden behind an unassuming corrugated steel facade,  Tin Box  is an island favorite serving up the odd combination of delicious barbeque and fresh sushi. It's a formula that somehow works perfectly to keep a packed house at this roadside staple. Calypso nights — on Mondays during high season — are among Vieques' best live music events.

Located along the seaside walkway in Esperanza,  Bananas  feels like the casual beach restaurant every traveler is looking for in a Caribbean vacation. Classic Puerto Rican dishes like mofongo shine, while fresh favorites like fish tacos and coconut flan are menu highlights.

"It's impossible to understand the island's unique makeup and geography without understanding its past," shares DeMarco. In the 1940s, the U.S. Navy transformed almost half of the island into a naval base, leaving locals with just a small section of land in the central third of the island. "This led to a more vibrant and populated section of Vieques, and two undeveloped but beautiful ends on either side, which is a makeup that remains today."

Vieques National Wildlife Refuge

When the U.S. Navy began to abandon operations on Vieques in 2001, the lands they left behind became the  Vieques National Wildlife Refuge . Occupying almost half of the island, the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge is considered the most ecologically diverse wildlife refuge in the Caribbean. "The beaches here remain quite untouched and very pristine, a small benefit of a dark history," says DeMarco.

Located on the southern coast of Vieques, Esperanza is a small town with lots to see and do. The oceanfront walkway, known as the  malecón,  is the heart of Esperanza, home to some of the best beachfront restaurants on the island and a smattering of small guesthouses and cool hotels like El Blok. Proximity to many of the island's best beaches and the bioluminescent Mosquito Bay makes Esperanza an appealing base for travelers.

Isabel Segunda

The administrative center of Vieques, Isabel Segunda is located on the northern coast of the island. Home to the island's airport and ferry terminal, Isabel Segunda is most visitors' point of arrival on Vieques. While Isabel Segunda has plenty in the way of shops and conveniences, most travelers tend to pass through on their way to Esperanza and the beaches of the island's southern coast.

The best time to visit Vieques is between December and April, when the days are relatively breezier and sunny skies and clear waters are the norm. Though this is the high tourism season on the island, locals affirm that Vieques never feels crowded like some neighboring Caribbean islands do. Prices are higher at this time of year, but the lively atmosphere and perfect weather are well worth it.

While May through August have a higher chance of wet weather, it is an affordable and peaceful shoulder season worth considering for a trip. During these months, you'll find mostly locals from the main island of Puerto Rico who know what a lovely season this can be for exploring Vieques.

September and October are the island’s low season; these months are also the height of the Atlantic hurricane season. Prices will be at their lowest, but many restaurants and hotels shutter for renovation, upkeep, or a much-deserved break during these quiet months.

All transportation to Vieques starts in Puerto Rico, whether you'd prefer to reach the island by water or air.

Ferries to Vieques depart Puerto Rico from the small town of Ceiba, located about an hour and a half east of San Juan. The ferry makes the 35-45 minute journey between the islands several times a day.

Vieques also has a small airport, offering a more hassle-free travel option via quick flights from San Juan.  Cape Air  flies directly from San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, making these flights the best choice for travelers heading straight to Vieques upon arrival in Puerto Rico. Or, take a  Vieques Air Link  flight from San Juan's smaller Isla Grande Airport, about a 10-minute drive from San Juan's international airport.

Alternatively, book a catamaran or yacht for a private trip to the island, be it from Puerto Rico or neighboring Caribbean islands.  Dream Yacht Worldwide  offers charters to Vieques from nearby St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . Spend your days leisurely exploring the best beaches and pristine waters of Vieques before heading to other destinations like nearby Culebra with its world-famous Flamenco Beach.

There are no Ubers and few taxis on Vieques, meaning visitors should plan on renting a car to explore the island properly. Drivers share the road with golf carts and bicycles, also available for rent (but more challenging for navigating the hilly terrain in the center of Vieques).

More than just any rental car, locals recommend booking a 4x4 vehicle to properly access the island's more remote destinations. Reaching some of the island's best beaches, especially those in the Vieques National Wildlife Reserve, can be a treacherous endeavor without a proper four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Martiza's Car Rental  and  Vieques Car Rental  are among the island's reliable car rental companies. Locals recommend booking a rental car far in advance of your stay, even as soon as you book your accommodations. This is especially true if you're traveling during high season, as it's not uncommon for car rental companies to be entirely sold out during the busiest months in Vieques.

Vieques, Puerto Rico (2024 Guide) – All You Need To Know

image of Vieques, Puerto Rico

Vieques is an island located off the coast of Puerto Rico.

It is home to a bioluminescent bay (Mosquito Bay) and black sand beach .

I lived in Vieques for several years and explored every corner of this magical island.

In this article I will share:

– What is Vieques? – Where is Vieques located? – Do you need a passport to go to Vieques? – Why is Vieques famous? – How much does it cost to visit Vieques? – Can you visit Vieques without a tour? – How much time do you need in Vieques? – Is Vieques worth visiting?

What is Vieques?

Vieques is a small island located off the east-coast of Puerto Rico’s main island.

Puerto Rico is made up of more than one island. The main island is the largest. However, there are smaller islands such as Vieques and Culebra .

Vieques is known for its undeveloped beaches, wild horses and bioluminescent bay .

image of a group of horses in Vieques

Known locally as “La Isla Nena,” this nickname refers to Vieques as the little sister of Puerto Rico’s main island. Vieques island is only 21 miles long and 3 miles wide.

There are two towns you need to know about when you visit Vieques. One is Isabela II on the north shore, where the ferry will drop you off, and the other is Esperanza on the south shore.

There is very little development taking place on Vieques each year.

A visit to the island transports you back in time, and its slow pace makes it easy to relax.

Below is a video tour of Vieques:

Where is Vieques located?

Vieques is located less than ten miles off the coast of Puerto Rico’s main island.

vieques tourist map

The island is close to the US Virgin Islands, so you are likely to meet people from St. Thomas or St. Croix on your trip. The islands of Vieques and Culebra are sometimes referred to as the “Spanish Virgin Islands.”

The only way to get to Vieques is by air or sea.

Air carriers include Cape Air, Seaborne Airlines, and Vieques Air Link.

If you take the ferry, reserve your tickets before your trip to guarantee your spot.

Below is a Google Map that shows the location of Vieques:

Do you need a passport to go to Vieques?

Vieques is a part of the United States. Residents do not need a passport. For international travelers, it is required.

image of Vieques aerial view

The currency is the United States Dollar.

The first language of the island is Spanish. Many residents are bilingual, especially the younger generation and people working in tourism.

Why is Vieques famous?

People travel to Vieques to visit Mosquito Bay .

image of a hand dipped in the lagoon

Mosquito Bay is a bio bay which contains a high concentration of single-celled plankton, known as Dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates emit light (bioluminescence) when disturbed in the water at night.

image of two people in a kayak in the water with bioluminescence glowing around them

Mosquito Bay has a very narrow opening to the ocean, so many of these organisms have a hard time escaping.

This fact combined with the bay being surrounded by mangroves that act as a nursery for the organisms results in the largest concentration of bioluminescence in the world.

You can only visit Mosquito Bay via a guided tour so be sure read up on When The Best Time Is To See Bioluminescence and plan your trip accordingly.

image of Vieques island

The other reason Vieques is famous worldwide, is now an important part of Puerto Rico’s history.

From the 1940s to 2003, the US Military used the island for training and bomb testing.

Vieques made headlines in 1999 when a military jet dropped a bomb on the island during training that resulted in the death of David Sanes.

Protests amplified and arrests were made, including many celebrities from the US mainland and Puerto Rico who joined the efforts.

Following intense community pushback and international attention, the military left the island after over 60 years of occupation.

How much does it cost to visit Vieques?

Typically, the most economic way to visit the island is by ferry, which costs less than $5 per person.

image of Ceiba Ferry Terminal

The ferry departs from Ceiba, which is a one hour drive from San Juan . Parking near the docks costs under $15 per day.

The average cost for a small public flight hovers around $100 round trip per person from San Juan.  You can also charter a boat from Ceiba or take a private aircraft.

If you don’t have a rental car, you can still get to Ceiba from San Juan, via the public van depot in Rio Piedras.

Learn more about the public vans and the ferry in the video below:

Ground transportation

Scooters are a great option if you don’t want to rent a jeep or take public vans.

vieques tourist map

A Jeep can cost up to $100 per day. You can not bring the car you rented on the main island to Vieques on the ferry.

If you don’t have car rental arrangements on Vieques, don’t worry, there will be a public van waiting for you at the ferry dock. It typically costs less than $15 to ride from Isabel II, the town on the north shore, to Esperanza, the town on the south shore.

image of town of Esperanza in Vieques

If you don’t have a car, I recommend staying in Esperanza. The town sits directly on the Caribbean Sea and from here, it’s easy to access the main bars and restaurants of the Malec ó n (boardwalk), or meet your guide for a bio bay tour. Sun Bay is within walking distance.

Accommodation

The average night’s stay on Vieques costs under $200.

Hostels or camping on Sun Bay is a great way to save on your trip.

If you are camping, just show up at Sun Bay (pictured above). At their on-site office, you can reserve a spot within the grassy area next to the beach.

Vieques has no shortage of amazing restaurants to choose from.

The Green Store in Esperanza has all your basic needs. Near Isabel II, you can find Morales, a larger grocery store.

When eating out, plates range from $8.00-$18.00 on average.

Can you visit Vieques without a tour?

You do not need a tour to visit Vieques.

Once you are on the island, you have the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of tours from snorkeling to horseback riding and private boat charters.

You will have an easy time navigating the island on your own whether you rent a car or use public transport.

Use the Google Map below for your Vieques bucket list:

How much time do you need in Vieques?

Two days is my recommended minimum.

image of Playa Negra in Vieques

Different things can happen along the way, like a delayed flight or ferry ride.

You want to allow enough time for surprise delays and some time to relax and enjoy the island’s slower pace of life.

Is Vieques worth visiting?

Absolutely! If you are looking for memories to last a lifetime, Vieques has it all.

Vieques’s most secluded beaches are in the nature preserve. You will need a vehicle to access these beaches as they are not within walking distance from either town.

vieques tourist map

Sun Bay is the most accessible beach on Vieques.

The Sun Bay coastline hosts three different beaches. Media Luna is great for children that are scared of waves, while Navio offers a surfing and bodyboarding experience on occasion.

vieques tourist map

The beaches on the northern shores of the island have a bit more waves in the winter, but you likely won’t find any waves like you would on the main island at Steps or Maria’s Beach .

Some important things to consider when planning your trip are that if you want to have a vehicle, rent a car with Avis or Maritza’s well in advance as they book out quickly.

The island does not have a hospital that is equipped to handle medical emergencies, so if something happens you will be transported back to the main island of Puerto Rico.

There is a small clinic in the town of Isabel Segunda.

Final thoughts

Vieques is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves nature and connecting with a more relaxed way of living.

The island holds a special place in the heart of many travelers, including myself.

The bio bay in Vieques is unique, but it is difficult to get to due to its location. If you want to visit a bio bay that is closer to San Juan, then I recommend that you visit Laguna Grande Bio Bay which is only an hour drive from San Juan.

Before your trip, be sure to check out our articles: When Is The Best Time To See Bioluminescence and How To Get To Vieques From San Juan .

10+ Things to do in Vieques Puerto Rico (Guide and Itinerary)

Vieques is a destination I’m really interested in visiting. I found out about the island from our first trip to the island of Puerto Rico way back in 2014. Here are things to do in Vieques Puerto Rico. We also cover reasons why you should visit this island and provide one and two day itineraries for Vieques Puerto Rico.

Thank you to the Women in Travel Summit and Discover Puerto Rico for hosting me on this trip.

Things to do in Vieques Puerto Rico

El fortin de conde mirasol (fuerte de vieques), caracas beach (red beach) , town of esperanza in vieques puerto rico, town of isabel ii (isabel segunda) in vieques puerto rico, ceiba tree park: see the oldest ceiba tree in vieques puerto rico, mosquito bay: vieques’s own bioluminescent bay, sun bay beach, la chiva beach – blue beach in vieques , black sand beach (playa negra), seaglass beach (cofi beach) , can you do a day trip to vieques from san juan puerto rico , flying to vieques from ceiba , which airlines fly to vieques from ceiba airport , what to expect before you board a flight to vieques island, can you do an uber from san juan to ceiba airport , can i take a ferry from the mainland of puerto rico to vieques , is vieques island expensive , two day itinerary in vieques: things to do in vieques puerto rico, share this:.

While you can theoretically do a day trip to Vieques from the mainland, it is going to either be a really long day, or an expensive trip if you opt to fly. Here are some places you can visit if you only have a full day in Vieques Puerto Rico.

  • Ride the airplane from Ceiba to Vieques (Antonio Rivera Rodriguez Airport)
  • Book a car rental or pre-book a tour of the city
  • Visit the Vieques Ceiba Tree Park and see the semi-wild horses of Vieques
  • Mosquito Pier to see if there are any sea turtles (or to snorkel)
  • Visit El Fortin de Conde Mirasol (fort)
  • Isabel II for the square and the murals around the city
  • Esperanza for lunch and for the small beach by the town
  • Caracas Beach
  • Drive past Sun Bay Beach to see more semi-wild horses
  • Airport to fly back to Ceiba Airport or Ferry to Ceiba from Isabel II
  • Back to San Juan

Weekend or Two-Day Itinerary in Vieques Puerto Rico

Two days in Vieques is the ideal amount of time to visit, in my opinion. The island is small enough to discover almost everything you can do on the island:

  • Do the above (except you will stay in Isabel II or Esperanza overnight instead of going back to the airport). We’ll also add the bioluminescent bay (Puerto Mosquito) as an activity in the evening before heading back to your accommodation for the night.
  • Breakfast in the town
  • Sea Glass Beach
  • Blue Beach (La Chiva)
  • Black Beach (involves a 15-minute walk/hike)
  • Green Beach
  • Vieques airport to fly back to Ceiba airport

Here is a condensed list of things to do in Vieques. Two days is generally enough to do most things on the island if you don’t intend to stay the whole day on a beach. You can beach-hop and see the differences between them yourself!

a canon on top of a wall on top of the El Fortin de Mirasol in Vieques Puerto Rico

Included in the National Register of Historic Places, this fort on top of a hill overlooking the island is a hidden gem. The walls of brick still stand, with some antique canons lined up on top, ready to fire for any intruder.

The grounds of the fort are free to visit. There are so many beautiful photo spots in the area so spend as much time as you want. If you want more history, there is a museum on the fort, which accepts donations, but is free of charge to enter.

Caracas Beach, also known as Red Beach, is home to some semi-feral horses and a crescent-shaped beach. There are some caves shaped by the waves which makes for good photo spots on the right side of the beach. On top of the caves are cliffs, which you can use as a jump-off point if you are so inclined and are daring enough.

There are no facilities available directly on the beach. The closest bathrooms are within the state park, but you will have to drive there. There are some shaded areas where you can put your stuff and have a picnic, but no place to buy water or food either. The shade may have some horses you can get up close to. They usually stay there hoping for scraps of food or water from visitors.

If you are looking for sea turtles, head to the left side of the beach. There is some sea grass in there where they could hang out. Otherwise, that spot is the place to see fish. It is shallow on the leftmost side of the beach, and the water is clear, so you may not need to snorkel to see the fish and turtles.

coconut tree and some shrubs on a beach in Vieques Puerto Rico

This is considered the place to be when visiting Vieques. Most of the hip and boutique accommodations are in Esperanza. The restaurants are located within walking distance of the town too. Everything is so compact, and there’s even a small beach close to the road in front of the restaurants and hotels.

Walk around the Malecon, the boardwalk by the water, which has a small beach you can utilize while staying in town. The small beach has swing tires and other places to get great photos in. The facilities are the restaurants or your accommodation on the town nearby. There are no beach chairs or umbrellas available: you’ll have to bring your own.

You will need to arrange transportation to get to Esperanza from the airport or the ferry port. It is on the other side of the island and there are no buses or public transport (except taxis or pre-booked private transportation).

Isabel II is the main town in Vieques and is named after Queen Isabela of Spain. It has small grocery stores, gift shops, and accommodations. The town also has its own farmers market and a fair share of museums, albeit small. This town is the jumping-off point when taking the ferry to or from San Juan.

There is a small beach very close to the pier, so if you are looking for a last minute beach spot before going back to the Fajardo, that’s the place to go.

big ceiba tree, the oldest located in Ceiba Park in Vieques Puerto Rico

The ceiba tree is the national tree of Puerto Rico, and one of the top things to do in Vieques is to go to Ceiba Tree Park. You can take a photo with the tree, and it’s also a spot where the semi-feral horses seem to frequent. Aside from the tree, there’s nothing else much to do in the park, since there’s no facilities and is just an open area.

Puerto Rico has 3 bioluminescent bays in total. One is located in Vieques, while the remaining two are on the main island of Puerto Rico. There is one near Fajardo, called Laguna Grande, which we visited and kayaked before, as well as La Parguera on the southwest coast.

However, the most brilliant of the bioluminescent bays is located in the island of Vieques. Located on the east side of the island, the best way to experience the bioluminescence is by booking during a New Moon. Several tour operators offer tours to the site, and you can opt between doing a regular kayak tour, or a clear bottom kayak.

Since the bioluminescence can only be seen in the evening, it is not advisable to go out kayaking on your own. When booking a tour, you’ll have guides who know where to go and how to navigate the waters so you won’t get lost in the lagoon.

Looking for a huge stretch of sand with facilities nearby and a place to park your car? Also looking for a spot where you can see a lot of semi-wild horses in one go? Head on over to Sun Bay Beach. This long stretch of sand is pretty cool, with plenty of parking spaces and a small restaurant/cafe to eat in. There’s toilets available within walking distance of the beach and the parking lot.

There are so many horses hanging around this area so you don’t have to look too far to find them if you go straight here. This area is known by the horses for the fresh water that accumulates on the field near the beach, so they are drawn to it by the masses.

If you think that the Blue Beach in Vieques has blue sand or something, guess again! The beach got its name from the US Navy, who used the island for military exercises. There are some parts of Vieques where the public is not allowed in, like La Chiva Key, because of some unexploded bombs in the area, from when the Navy had control of it. Blue Beach is commonly known for the turquoise waters around it, with a different tone of blue water on the horizon.

The Black Sand Beach is so called because of the black sand of the beach. Be warned though, the sand is not as black as you would expect when visiting a black sand beach formed from volcanic activity.  It seems that the black sand in the beach has been mostly washed away, so you will need to keep walking to the right side of the beach to find the black sand, instead of closer to the trailhead.

Black Sand Beach is not wheelchair-friendly. To get to the beach, you’ll need to hike 15 minutes on a trail from the parking area, 30 minutes round trip. The hike is fairly easy, but bring water shoes (do not wear flip-flops!) on the hike.

Seaglass Beach got its name because it used to have a ton of sea glass mixed in the sand. Now that the word is out and most people visit trying to find sea glass, the sea glass is getting harder to find.

Seaglass isn’t really great. You can think of it as litter: It’s glass that got smoothed by the waves and the sand after being washed away. Glass does not deteriorate as quickly, so it’s a sign of pollution. However, people collect seaglass and incorporate the material into their craft projects on other things.

If you have the budget for it but not enough time, you could theoretically take a day trip to Vieques from San Juan. Everything must be pre-planned and booked in advance though.

On a day trip to Vieques, you will need to:

  • Book your round-trip transportation from your San Juan accommodation to Ceiba Airport
  • Book a round-trip flight from Ceiba Airport in San Juan to Vieques
  • Have transportation prebooked in Vieques
  • Mapped out what you want to see and do in Vieques

It is going to be a long day, so expect to start the day early, especially if you’re planning to take the ferry. It takes at least 2 hours to get from Old San Juan to Ceiba, and another 2 hours back.

Drive an hour from Old San Juan and head east to Ceiba Airport. There are nonstop flights from Ceiba, on the main island of Puerto Rico to Vieques. Total flight time between the islands is between 8 to 10 minutes, but boarding and waiting for a plane may take a bit longer.

There are two airlines that fly to Vieques from Ceiba Airport: Cape Air and Vieques Air Link. We flew the latter (Vieques Air Link) on our tour of the island but both airlines were flying small island hopper airplanes. These airplanes are propeller planes that have the capacity to seat 8 with a small cargo hold in the back.

The airlines flying to Vieques Island are strict when it comes to baggage: they weigh everything before you board the plane. This means you will be weighed as well as all your luggage, including personal items. The reason why they weigh everything is for the weight and balance of the airplane.

Your personal items have to be placed in the cargo hold behind the plane. There isn’t any space to store purses of any size. This includes any luggage you may have. You can bring a small wallet and a phone with you on the plane. Take lots of videos and photos. You’ll be up in the air and back down before you know it. Trust me, the experience of flying on this plane is pretty incredible.

Why do I need to be weighed before my flight to Vieques?

Since the airplane is generally tiny, your seats will depend on the weight balance. They will put your party together on the same row as much as possible, but if you are traveling solo, you won’t have a choice where to sit. You could be seated without a window, or in the back row, or the front row behind the pilot.

There is no air-conditioning in these tiny airplanes. Dress accordingly .

For aviation geeks, the plane used on this inter-island hops is called an Islander.

Yes, but you have to pre-book the return trip from Ceiba to San Juan in advance. While there are plenty of Ubers in San Juan, there’s very little available outside of the city. Alternatively, you can book private transportation that can handle the trip to the airport and back from San Juan.

Yes, it costs $2 one way for 40 mins for a passenger ferry. If you are taking large amounts of cargo, it takes 1 hr 10 mins for the passenger and cargo ferry to make the crossing.

There is a new ferry terminal called Mosquito Pier but it’s not open to the public yet. Currently, the pier is on the town of Isabel II and doesn’t look like a pier. It’s super small and off the main road. You can just walk to the town as soon as you get on the ferry.

Yes, but not overly so. But like any other island in the Caribbean, expect to pay a price for your vacation. The food itself will cost at least $40 for lunch (with a non alcoholic drink and tip).

Hotel prices are an average of $200 per night. The airplane shuttles between Vieques and the main island of Puerto Rico cost an average of $320 round-trip.

We think Turks and Caicos and other Caribbean Islands are more expensive than going to Vieques overall. However, there are ways to make the trip a bit more affordable in Vieques such as taking the ferry to the island ($2 one way) and renting a car instead of flying.

a sign that says i heart vieques with puerto rican flag banners on top and a sign on top that says things to do in Vieques Puerto Rico

Most things to do in Vieques can be done within in two days. The island is small and has its charms. While you are in Vieques, your next destination should be in Culebra. Culebra is another island in Puerto Rico and used to be a military facility, so you will see remnants of it when you visit. It has long been a bucket list destination of mine to visit Culebra!

Alternatively, stay longer in San Juan to explore the other cities and towns on the island. There’s more to the island than Old San Juan or Condado, and is easy to spend more than week exploring the mainland.

Hopefully, this post helped you plan your trip to Vieques! As always, if you made it this far, thank you. If you feel we have left behind other cool stuff to visit on the island and want to highlight them, feel free to leave us a comment below with your suggestion.

Measuring 21 miles long by 5 miles wide, Vieques is substantially bigger than Culebra and distinctly different in ambience. Though still a million metaphorical miles from the bright lights of the Puerto Rican mainland, the larger population here has meant more choice of accommodations, swankier restaurants and generally more buzz. It's renowned for its gorgeous beaches, semi-wild horses and unforgettable bioluminescent bay.

Sandy Beaches in Vieques Puerto Rico with water, sand and sun

Introducing Vieques Puerto Rico!

2 ladies standing in front of an I Heart Vieques sign beginning their Vieques Itinerary in Puerto Rico

Why you should visit Vieques.

Chances are that if you are visiting this blog post, you have Vieques on your radar and are looking for things to do in Vieques and what to put on your Vieques Itinerary !

I most likely don’t need to convince you to take a day trip to Vieques, but just in case you are still on the fence a bit…..

Vieques is a tropical island and lush paradise in Puerto Rico. It is well known for its beautiful beaches, wild horses, largest natural wildlife refuge in the Caribbean, and the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay.  There were many centuries of Spanish influence on the island, so it still retains a lot of that heritage, and, like Puerto Rico, it is often considered a part of the Spanish Virgin Islands.

It is easily visited on a day trip from San Juan to Vieques. We did it on our trip and I’ll explain how you can do it too!

PRO TIP : If you are from the USA, you don’t need a passport to visit this heavenly wonderland!

Internationally, Vieques has been known for many protests against the US when they were using it as a testing ground for bombs.  Can you imagine using such a beautiful place as a bomb site????

Due to all the protests, the US Navy left Vieques in 2003 and the land is now occupied by a national wildlife refuge.  Some of the refuge is still closed to the public due to contamination and the potential for unexploded devices.  Seems like there needs to be a lot more cleanup from the US military!

Thank you to @Discover Puerto Rico and Women in Travel for showcasing Vieques to us. I traveled there with my daughter and we had a wonderful mother-daughter Day Trip to Vieques with some other fellow travel bloggers.

Where is Vieques?

Vieques, Isla de Vieques, is one of the offshore islands of Puerto Rico.  It is a small island located just 7 miles to the east of the main island in Puerto Rico in the northeast part of the Caribbean.  It is only about 60 square miles in area.

Vieques vs Culebra Islands

colorful I Heart Vieques sign in Puerto Rico

Is Vieques or Culebra better?

The other main island of Puerto Rico is Culebra.  We also took a day trip to Culebra .  If you have extra time in your itinerary, you can plan a trip to both islands, but if not, you will have to choose.

Pick Culebra for the small island atmosphere and quaint beaches.  Choose Vieques if you prefer a larger selection of beaches and ESPECIALLY if you are interested in the Biobay –(discussed in the Things to do on Vieques Section below!).

Should you take a day trip to Vieques?

A weekend trip to Vieques is the best way to vacation on this beautiful island, but if you only have a limited time to spare in your Puerto Rico itinerary , see if you can squeeze in at least a day trip to Vieques.  If you plan out your Vieques itinerary right, you can still see some of the main sites and make it back to the mainland feeling fulfilled.

How to get to Vieques Puerto Rico

If you are wondering how you get to Vieques Puerto Rico, there are two answers. You can reach Vieques by small plane or ferry.

Flying to Vieques

lady stand in front of a plane bound for Vieques Puerto Rico

Getting a flight is probably the best way to get to Vieques in order to manage your time efficiently.  The flight is quick and easy (versus the ferry –see below). If you are only spending a day in Vieques, you won’t have to waste a lot of time getting to the island, so flying there is your best option.

There are many flights to Vieques from San Juan or Ceiba. Ceiba is on the eastern side of Puerto Rico, closer to Vieques, and a good option for SOME travelers –but we will discuss that option second.

@moyermemoirs We flew from the main island Puerto Rico to the smaller island Vieques for a day with a group of 8 people and it was cheaper than getting a ferry!!!! It was only an 8 minute flight! DM me if you would like more information. ✈️ #witspuertorico #discoverpuertorico #liveboricua #travel #plane #traveltiktok #travelblogger #moyermemoirs #puertorico #privateplane #vieques ♬ Sunset Lover – Petit Biscuit

Flight from San Juan to Vieques

wheel of airplane of blue water

Flights from San Juan are the most convenient way to get to Vieques.  There is ample transportation to get you to the San Juan airport, where you can hop on a 30-minute flight to Vieques that is offered many times throughout the day.  The typical cost for this ticket tends to be around $100.

Check out these small airlines for domestic airline tickets to Vieques:  Air Flamenco ,  Cape Air ,  Vieques Airlink or   Seaborne Airlines .

Flight from Ceiba to Vieques

Ceiba Sign with arrow to the airport in Puerto Rico

The Ceiba to Vieques flight is only 10-minutes and is the faster way to get to Vieques. However, these flights are a lot more difficult and expensive since you will also need transportation to get to Ceiba (and back). Ceiba is an hour away from San Juan which will be quite pricey for such a long ride in a taxi (like another $100 each way in addition to your air ticket!)!.  However, if you have a rental car in Puerto Rico , then this might be an option for you.

Ferry to Vieques

white boat at a dock for Ferry to Culebra Puerto Rico

Taking the ferry to from Ceiba to Vieques is definitely the cheapest way to get to Vieques. However, it is also the slowest! It can take 45 – 60 minutes for the ferry transfer, however, there are also other considerations to take into account that add into the travel time.

Remember that you will need to get to Ceiba first for this option –which is a good hour away from San Juan. In addition to the travel time to Ceiba, you will need to arrive at the dock at least an hour before departure time.   So you see if you add up the 1 transfer time to Ceiba, the 1 pre-boarding time, and the 45 minutes of ferry travel time, you get close to 3 hours of just traveling to Veiques which eats into the free time you will have for your Veiques itinerary.

If you have a rental car in Puerto Rico , driving to Ceiba is an option.  Arriving the night before your day trip to Vieques and getting an overnight room in Ceiba will definitely maximize the time you will have to explore the island.

PRO TIP:  You can’t take your rental car with you to Vieques.  The cargo ferries are reserved for residents of Vieques only.  You will need to pay for parking at the ferry dock, which is around $15.

Still want to travel by ferry to Vieques?  Here is the scoop!

Tickets are around $3 each way for adults.

Tickets often sell out, so the best way to plan a ferry trip to Vieques is to book online ahead of time.

Only 20% of ferry tickets are sold online. The remaining 80% is sold at the ferry terminal.  Schedules and ticket sales usually open the previous month, though there is not an exact date to release the schedule for the next month. Check the ferry website frequently to see when tickets are released for purchase so that you secure one of the 20% sold online.   Don’t panic if ticket sales aren’t opened until the last day or two of the month — they will open!

If online tickets are sold out for your desired departure time but there is a later ferry ticket available for online purchase, purchase the later ticket. Monitor the ferry website for the number of tickets available for sale at the box office for your desired time, and you can decide if it is worth traveling to the ferry dock to exchange your ticket for an earlier ferry.

If you can’t get tickets online in advance, you can take a chance and try to get them at the ferry office on your travel date.  There are often last-minute tickets available and sold at the ferry office in Ceiba.

THINGS TO DO IN VIEQUES

Explore vieques, wild horses in vieques.

two horses walk past a tree on Vieques Island in Puerto Rico

Vieques is known for all the horses that are running wild throughout the island.  Are they wild horses?  That depends on your definition.  They do have owners, but they are not kept on a specific spot of land.  The horses are allowed to roam free and ‘wild.’

The wild horses add to the blissful atmosphere of the island.  You will spot them everywhere as they seem to be minding their own business while they graze in the grass or wander along the white sandy shore.  These magnificent creatures enhance the tranquility of the peaceful nature scene throughout Vieques.

Horseback Riding

With the abundance of horses on Vieques, are you surprised that horseback riding is a popular activity on Vieques?  Several tour operators offer horseback riding tours like riding on the beach into the sunset,  walking a scenic hilltop loop, or traveling through the quaint, little village of Esperanza

PRO TIP:  Most horseback riding tours in Vieques have weight limits so make sure to check out ALL the restrictions that are put in place for your safety and the safety of the horses.

Ceiba trees are the national tree of Puerto Rico.  There are a few around the island of Vieques.  The oldest Ceiba tree in Vieques is a tourist attraction for good reason.  It is estimated to be over 400 years old and is HUGE. It is worth a stop to get an idea of the grand size of this old tree.

Relax on a Beach in Vieques

There are tons of beautiful beaches in Vieques Puerto Rico.  After all, it is a paradise to add to your Caribbean island Bucket List !

Enjoying the beaches in Vieques is a captivating experience, with pristine shores offering breathtaking views and tranquil waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Whether lounging under the sun or exploring hidden coves, the beauty of Vieques’ coastline never fails to enchant visitors.

Put some of the beaches in Vieques on the top of your list on your Vieques Vacation!

Playa Caracas

sandy beach in Vieques in Puerto Rico with turquoise water and a palm tree in the foreground

On our Vieques day trip, we stopped at Playa Caracas first.  It was not very crowded early in the morning.  We were able to enjoy the soft white sand and clear turquoise water in peace and quiet.  This Vieques beach is in a protected cove, so it makes the water calm and gentle.

When I had enough of the Caribbean sun, there were gazebos to take refuge in or palm trees to relax under

Playa Caracas is located on the southern coast of Vieques in the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge (see entry below).  The beach is easy to find since you can just follow abundant signs to the Refuge.

Sun Bay Beach

palm trees in the sand in the foreground and blue water in the background with a boat in Vieques Puerto Rico

Sun Bay Beach is another popular beach on Vieques Island.  It has smooth waves with lifeguards on duty during the daytime.  It has showers, bathrooms, and even a Caribbean food kiosk –everything you need for a relaxing day at the beach in Puerto Rico!

There are also plenty of palm trees to go around!

Sun Bay Beach is on the southern coast of Vieques and really close to Esperanza.  We stopped there after our lunch (see my lunch recommendations below).

Best Vieques Beaches

Some other beaches in Vieques are Media Luna, Playa La Chiva, Playa Negra, Coconut Beach, El Gallito, Playa Esperanza, and Secret Beach.

Use the Vieques Beach map to find the perfect beach to put on your Vieques Itinerary!

Vieques National Wildlife Refuge

The Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, created by Congress with lands formerly managed by the Navy in 2001 and 2003, spans over 18,000 acres of diverse ecosystems. Its habitats include beaches, wetlands, and dry forests, providing sanctuary for various wildlife species of the Caribbean islands like the Antillean manatee, the brown pelican, and four species of sea turtles. The refuge is renowned for its efforts in protecting endangered sea turtles, such as the hawksbill and leatherback turtles, during nesting season.

Visitors to the refuge can enjoy activities like birdwatching, hiking, and wildlife photography amidst the tranquil natural surroundings.

PRO TIP:   The Refuge is the largest in the Caribbean and is open year-round with no entrance fee.

Snorkeling and Scuba in Vieques

Vieques offers exceptional snorkeling opportunities with its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, while its scuba diving sites boast stunning underwater landscapes and the chance to encounter rare species such as sea turtles and eagle rays. Adventurers can explore Vieques’ pristine waters and discover an underwater world teeming with beauty and wonder.

Bioluminescent Bay

boat in dark water in front of the setting sun

Mosquito Bay is a natural bioluminescent bay .

The Mosquito Bay on Vieques holds the Guinness Book of World Records title as the brightest biobay in the world . The large 160-acre area off the coast of Vieques in the Caribbean Sea is known worldwide for its magical sparkles in the water from the dinoflagellate that inhabit it and glow bright as the sun sets.

The best time to experience the bio bay is during a dark sky, so try to book your tour during a new moon.  The darker the night, the better your view of the sparkles.

The best way to experience the mesmerizing glow of the biobay is to book a kayak tour of the shallow waters of Mosquito Bay.

PRO TIP:  Book a tour with a company that has a clear bottom kayak for the ultimate best view of the spectacular display of light. That way you will be able to see the sparkling glow all around you and underneath your kayak as you paddle through the biobay

How can I see the Biobay on Vieques?

Best Vieques bio bay tour: Book one of these tours of Mosquito Bay on Vieques in Puerto Rico

What makes this biobay glow?

There are 700,000 dinoflagellates per gallon of water in Mosquito Bay.  They are a single-cell microorganism that converts internal chemical energy into light whenever they are disturbed –like by a kayak paddle!  This is their defense mechanism that wards off their predators.

Is it harmful to see the biobay phenomenon?

Scientists say the bioluminescent reaction does not harm the dinoflagellates at all.

How to get around Vieques Island

Golf Cart Rental

Although Vieques is a small island, it’s not THAT small and you will still need transportation to get around.

I recommend renting a golf cart or jeep.  The main roads are paved, but there are still a lot of bumpy dirt roads (some with potholes!) that will be tricky to safely navigate in a rental car (and keep the rental car in decent shape!).

PRO TIP:  Secure your rental ahead of time.  Many rental companies sell out.

Where to eat in Vieques

Duffy’s was our lunch spot in Esperanza. The fish bites and waffle fries were delicious and really hit the spot after a long morning at the beach soaking up the sun. We sat on the patio and were able to enjoy the view of the calm blue water while we sipped our tropical drinks and nibbled on our lunch.

Is Vieques worth visiting?

group of ladies standing under a palm tree on a beach i n Vieques

In conclusion, YES. Everyone that went on this Vieques Island Day Trip had a great time!!!

Vieques is not a typical mega-touristy Caribbean island with cruise ports teeming with tourists or all-inclusive high-rise condos lining the beaches. It doesn’t have golf courses or casinos.

It is laid-back and relaxing, filled with beautiful sandy beaches so that you can drift away under a palm tree listening to the sound of the surf. You can spend a day in Vieques or a week in Vieques, depending on how much you want to put on your Vieques Itinerary. One thing is for sure though, make sure you at least plan to take a day trip from San Juan to Vieques Puerto Rico to see all that this beautiful island has to offer!

18 Beautiful Vieques Beaches – A Guide To Where They Are & How To Get There

The best beaches on the island of Vieques, including photos, directions, and a map to get you there.

January 21, 2020 By //  by  Michael Leave a Comment

A visit to Puerto Rico wouldn’t be complete without taking at least a one-day trip to the island of Vieques . This island, about 8 miles east of Puerto Rico (although the ferry trip is 18 miles) is well-known as a haven for people who want to explore relatively quiet sand and surf. Vieques beaches are some of the best beaches in all of the Caribbean. The island has been listed as one of the top 15 places for beaches in the world .

The great thing about beaches in Vieques is that even the popular ones aren’t all that busy. The secluded beaches in Vieques have few, if any, people at all.

We went to all of the places on this list and we took all of the photos. We totally get that tourism boards will want to show you the best Vieques beach photos possible. But our goal was to show you real photos of the beaches in Vieques – to show you what they actually look like so you can decide for yourself if you want to go.

Related post: Want to hit the beaches? You have several transportation options in Vieques . So, what kind of vehicle should you rent there to get to the beaches below?

Still have questions?: Check out our list of answers to common questions about Vieques . They may be helpful as you plan your trip!

Here are the 18 Vieques beaches we visited, with directions along with a few comments about each of them. Read about all of them or simply click the Table of Contents to get information about a specific beach you’ve heard about.

A note about the photos: We traveled to all of these Vieques beaches over a period of a few days when it was quite windy on the island. You’ll no doubt notice there are a lot of waves. Don’t worry to much about that. Keep in mind that on a nice, calm day, the waves at most of Vieques’ beaches will be substantially smaller.

Table of Contents

Beaches in Southeast Vieques

Southeast is not really the right way to put it. What I really mean is the beaches on the south coast that fall within the National Wildlife Refuge. They are “east” only in that they are to the east of the other beaches in the southern part of Vieques.

1. Caracas Beach – “Red Beach”

Caracas Beach in Vieques. The Red Beach. A palm tree in the foreground and people in the background.

Caracas Beach is probably one of the most popular beaches in Vieques. most people also think it’s one of the prettiest beaches in Vieques. It’s easy to see why. The beach is very wide and very long. You can have as much or as little privacy as you like. While there weren’t many people here on the day we visited, it does get quite popular during high season. Caracas Beach has toilets (primitive), shelters with barbecue pits, a volleyball net, and plenty of parking spaces.

You’ll probably see several wild horses hanging out in the grassy area, too.

How to get to Caracas Beach: Take Route 997 to the VIeques National Wildlife Reserve until you see the sign. Caracas Beach is the first beach you’ll see after you drive down the road a bit.

2. Pata Prieta – the “Secret Vieques Beach”

Halef motioning a shushing sound on The Secret Vieques Beach

The Secret Beach wasn’t so secret. Three other people were there when we arrived. Heh. It’s a small, horseshoe-shaped beach with about 20 feet of sand separating the water from the shade. More in places.

There’s lots of soft sand here, but several rocks as well. When we stopped by, the waves were rough, but it was nice to sit here, relax, and listen to them in peace.

How to get to the Secret Beach: Take Route 997 into the National Wildlife Refuge. You’ll drive past Caracas Beach and the road will suddently become a dirt road. This beach is a little tougher to get to because there is no pavement and the road can be rough. We got here on a golf cart, though a 4-wheel drive is recommended. Park and walk about 300 feet down to the beach.

3. La Chiva Beach – “Blue Beach”

A woman laying on a towel on La Chivas Beach in Vieques. The Blue Beach

Playa La Chiva used to be known as “Vieques Blue Beach.” It’s quite a large beach with several entrances, at least 12 of which have a wooden shelter for shade. The waves here are large when it’s windy and there’s lots of small vegetation around the beach, including a few trees for shade.

On a calm day, it’s a great place for snorkeling and there are lots of good places to spread a beach towel.

La Chiva Beach doesn’t have many facilities. But it does have one toilet.

How to get to the La Chiva Beach: Route 997 and enter the Vieques Wildlife Refuge. La Chiva Beach is a very long beach farther in along the dirt road. Spots on the beach are numbered and areas 7 through 15 are probably the best.

4. Escondida Beach

Escondida beach in Vieques. Not much beach area available with lots of seaweed on the sand.

I’m not really sure why this one makes it into lists of beaches to visit in Vieques. Perhaps it’s usually a lot different. But when we were there, it was quite messy. It’s a lovely little beach only because it’s all-natural – meaning that it would need a good clean-up in order to use it as a recreational beach.

When I saw this beach, my first thought was that it might be the kind of place my friends and I would come to drink when we were underaged – knowing no one else would show up!

Because it’s quite distant from populated areas, cellular reception here is basically non-existent. That means it’s a little riskier to swim here. It’s not necessarily more dangerous here, it’s just that even if you have a signal, it will take longer to get to you. So be extra careful.

How to get to Escondida: Route 997 and enter the Vieques Wildlife Refuge. Escondida Beach is one of the last beaches along the dirt road. The only one farther is Playa La Plata.

5. Playa La Plata – “Silver Beach”

Playa La Plata - "Silver Beach" Not a lot of beach space. Palm tree in the foreground

Even though it’s a fairly long beach, it’s not very wide. As pretty as it is, it certainly wouldn’t be my first choice for a beach day in Vieques. There’s almost no shelter from the sun. The waves were quite high because we showed up on a windy day. But are usually nice and calm.

Playa La Plata has several numbered entrances where you can park a vehicle or two. It’s the last beach on the road. After that, you’ll just find a boat ramp.

The same warning applies here. There is little or no cellular reception.

How to get to Playa la Plata: Take Route 997 and enter the Vieques Wildlife Refuge. Just keep driving. Playa La Plata is the last accessible beach on the drive.

6. Punta Galinde

Punta Glainde beach. The beach is empty and there is lots of space to lay out in the sun.

Although it’s possible I missed this during the research I did for this post, I didn’t see Punta Galinde mentioned in any of the lists of Vieques beaches I found. That’s good though because it means few people know about it and you’ll have it to yourself. It’s a secluded Vieques beach with nice waves and a gentle breeze.

While we were here, I did see someone sunbathing topless. I’m not surprised she was because it’s the perfect place for it. Lots of shade, too. You can set your beach towel up right under a shade tree.

I even saw when I think was an eagle ray jump clear out of the water here. I’m not 100% certain it was an eagle ray, but it was definitely a ray of some kind. Lots of little lizards hang out in the bushes as well.

How to get to Punta La Galinde beach: Take Route 997 and enter the Vieques Wildlife Refuge. Punta Glanide beach is between the Secret Beach and Playa La Chiva. You’ll see a small sign pointing to it.

7. Bonus stop: La Rampa

A concrete dock or ramp going out into the water with large rocks at the end.

I wouldn’t exactly call La Rampa a beach because it’s not. But I haven’t seen it mentioned in other places and I think it’s worth a stop – especially given that La Rampa is so close to the other Vieques beaches above.

It’s what its name says – a ramp. It’s actually a very large cement pier that juts out a little into the water. The views here are wonderful, although I was hoping to see little crabs on the rocks. It didn’t happen. The sign outside says it’s great for fishing and swimming. I can’t tell you for sure if the fishing is good. We didn’t try. But I think it would be a little rough swimming here. I certainly wouldn’t let children go in this water.

How to get to La Rampa: Take Route 997 and enter the Vieques Wildlife Refuge. La Rampa is very close to Punta Galinde and you’ll see it listed int he same sign.

South Coast Vieques Beaches

8. black sand beach.

Michael in the water at the Black Sand beach in the Vieques town of Esperanza.

Although it’s number 8 on our list of Vieques beaches, we chose to make the Vieques Black Sand Beach the last that we visited. We kind of knew that we would like it even before seeing it. We were right.

In our opinion, this is the prettiest beach in Vieques.

Black Sand Beach seems to be a kind of “niche” beach that attracts a younger crowd. I expect during the busy season, it’s a place where people come to party a bit, have a few drinks (or other pleasurable indulgences), and play good music. It has that vibe, even though there were only 6-8 people around while we were there.

Here, the waves aren’t terribly high, and you can certainly go out into the water on the main part of the beach (where the sand isn’t black). But once you get over to the black sand area, the water is much rougher.

The sign for Playa Negra in Esperanza, Vieques

How to get to Black Sand Beach: In the town of Esperanza, continue west on Route 997 along the waterfront. When Route 997 ends, turn left and drive just a short distance until you see a nice sign at ground level on the street that says “Playa Negra” (see above). Just at the top of the small hill, there is parking on the left. Park there and go back to the sign. Follow the trail for about 10 minutes and it’ll open up at the beach.

9. Playa Grande

Playa Grande - a very lengthy beach with absolutely no one on it.

As the name suggests, this is probably the largest of the Vieques beaches. Personally, I didn’t think it was special beyond that. There’s a lot of room to spread out here, but there is absolutely nothing else, including shade.

There are far better beaches to spend your time on than Playa Grande, in my opinion. The area is also a lot more susceptible to wind than many of the other beaches on Vieques.

One big plus is that it’s a great place to come and watch the sunset.

How to get to Playa Grande: From Esperanza, continue west on Route 997 along the waterfront. When Route 997 ends, turn left and continue for about 7 minutes. Then turn left onto Laguna Playa Grande road. Drive to the end of the road, which (unsurprisingly) ends at Playa Grande.

10. Sun Bay Beach

Sun Bay Beach with Michael far int he background and several small palm trees blowing in the wind.

If you want to be around people on a beach that’s a little more developed and where there’s a lot more socializing going on, then you should go to Sun Bay beach. While not our personal favorite, I think it will be for most other people. Although there’s no resort in the area, it’s like a beach you’d likely find near one.

Sun Ray beach has a cafe with food and drinks, modern bathrooms/toilets, and outdoor shower areas where you can rinse off the sand after your day. If you’re going to be in Esperanza and want a nice, normal beach experience in Vieques, this is the place to do it.

Plenty of wild horses around as well. Don’t worry, they’re very calm and friendly. And chickens – so many chickens (but not on the beach).

How to get to Sun Bay Beach: From Esperanza, take Route 997 east for about 6-7 minutes. On your right, you’ll see a gated entrance to the park. Drive in, park anywhere, and enjoy the beach.

11. Esperanza Beach

The view of Esperanza beach from the dock. Calm water and lots of trees in the background.

As the name suggests, Esperanza beach is right in the town of Esperanza. I wouldn’t say it’s a great beach, but it’s right outside all of the main restaurants, guest houses, and other businesses. It’s the perfect spot if you’re staying right here. You can go to the beach and, if you get hungry or thirsty, it’s a 2-minute walk to buy anything you want.

There’s a restaurant across the street called Bananas. It’s a great spot with good, American-style food and some Caribbean-inspired dishes as well. Super casual. In addition to that, there are stalls all along the beach where you can book any of the activities you want to do on the island.

How to get to Esperanza beach: This one is easy. If you can find the town of Esperanza, and chances are, you already have if you’re here, the beach is right in front of you. If you’re coming from the Ferry Terminal, it’s about a 20 minute drive. Take Route 200 to Route 997 and turn right. Route 997 takes you directly to Esperanza. If you’re driving at night, be aware of horses along the highway.

12. Media Luna Beach

Media Luna beach in Vieques. Relatively calm water and beautiful grayish white sand. This is the view out to the ocean.

While it’s a bit of a rough drive to get to Media Luna Beach, it’s worth it. The horseshoe-shaped beach is nicely protected from the wind and it has some of the softest sand we’ve seen on Vieques. It also has several wooden shelters.

This was a pleasant beach to visit and there were several people here during our visit.

How to get to Media Luna Beach: Media Luna Beach is along the same stretch as Sun Bay Beach. Take Route 997 east from Esperanza for about 6-7 minutes. On your right, you’ll see a gated entrance to the park. After you go through the gate, drive in a little and take a left, making your way down to the beach are (away from the buildings). When you get to the beach, turn left again and continue driving along Sun Bay Beach. At the end of the road, take a left on the trail. Keep right at any forks and you’ll eventually make it to Media Luna. Worth it!

13. Navio Beach

A view of Navio Beach with two unidentifiable woman posing for photos in the background.

We lovingly refer to this as the “Vieques Instagram Beach” not because anyone else calls it that, but because the two women in the picture above spent the entire time we were there doing various poses trying to get the perfect photo. To be fair though, it’s a very beautiful beach and I can understand why they thought it’d make the perfect Instagram shot.

I think this would be a pretty decent place to learn to surf. The waves are not huge, but they’re definitely there. Plus, it’s a pretty secluded spot, so you won’t have to be embarrassed every time you wipe out!

How to get to Navio Beach: Follow the same directions as above to Media Luna Beach, but just keep driving until you get to Navio Beach, which should take just a few minutes. The road is quite rough, so if you’re not in a four-wheel drive vehicle, pay extra attention. We used a golf cart and it was rough. I wouldn’t take a car down here.

Vieques Beaches in the North

Vieques has several beaches in the north, and they’re some of the more accessible ones we went to (with the notable exception of Punta Arenas). That’s mostly because they are right along route 200.

Here they are:

14. Punta Arenas Beach – “Green Beach”

Punta Arenas beach with beautiful beige sand, trees, and calm waters.

Technically, Punta Arenas beach is in the northwest. In fact, it’s at the extreme northwest tip of Vieques. We’re including it in the “north” list because the word “north” is part of the word “northwest” which makes it true. And we didn’t want it to feel lonely all by itself.

This is a really great beach. It’s too bad it’s such a pain to get to. That’s probably why no one comes here. There are hermit crabs everywhere along the tree line and the water and sand here are perfect.

If you want a really cool beach to visit in Vieques, please come here. We drove a golf cart here and you can definitely do that. But it’s probably better to have a truck or Jeep.

Such a nice place.

How to get to Punta Arenas: Since this is probably the farthest beach from you, it’s going to take you at least 30-40 minutes to get here. Take highway 200 west until it ends. The road will change from paved to dirt and in some areas, there are lots of potholes. We were driving a golf cart, and we didn’t have any issues. You just need to slow it down a little. Eventually, you’ll come to a sign for Punta Arenas. There are a few entrances. Explore them all and find the spot for you. You’ll likely be the only ones here.

15. Cofi Beach – a.k.a. Seaglass Beach

Cofi Beach near the ferry terminal in Vieques. A shipwreck in the water and villas overlooking the beach.

If you’re staying close to the ferry terminal in Isabel Segundo, this is the closest beach to you. In fact, you can walk off the ferry and be here in less than 10 minutes.

This is a nice secluded beach right in town. Although there is not a lot of room on the beach, it’s a great place if you’re staying here anyway, perhaps in one of the villas overlooking it. Our Airbnb was just up the hill and we came here twice. That thing in the background is a shipwreck, by the way.

How to get to Cofi (Seaglass) Beach: This beach is literally a six-minute walk from the ferry terminal in Vieques. If you just got off the boat and want to relax immediately before you check into your accommodations, this is a great place to do it. Walk up the hill (Calle Plinio Peterson), past the Subway store and Supermercado Morales. Keep going until you reach a gazebo area with seating. Continue down the hill through a small group of apartments until you get to the beach.

16. El Gallito Beach

El Gallito beach with a weather vane and benches in the foreground.

El Gallito (The Little Rooster – a.k.a. “Chicken Beach”) is another beach in Vieques that I didn’t see mentioned in any of the “beach” posts, but it’s great. Maybe everyone missed it. There’s lots of room on the beach for a blanket and umbrella. Not only that but there are a couple of barbecue pits, and several benches set out in the parking area.

Why? Because it turns out El Gallito Beach is also a great place to catch the sunset. The parking lot is called the Sunset Love Garden.

How to get to El Gallito Beach: Take Highway 200 west and stay on it for just under 5 km – about 10 minutes. You’ll spot the beach pretty easily.

17. Airport Beach

An empty Airport Beach. You can see a small plane taking off in the distance.

This beach is called “Airport Beach” because it is right next to the train station. Just kidding. There’s no train station on Vieques (that we know of).

For those of you who appreciate a nice beach where you can watch planes take off and land, this is the beach for you. All of the planes that take off here are small ones – just a few passengers – but they’ll catch you by surprise like the one in the photo above. One second, silence. The next, a loud roar.

It’s nothing like Maho Beach beach in Saint Martin, so you won’t feel a jet blast. But this experience is a distant second.

Other than the occasional take-off, Airport Beach is a very quiet place.

How to get to Airport Beach: Look for the planes taking off and landing! Seriously though, this beach is right before you get to the airport. Follow Highway 200 from Isabella Segunda for about 6 km or 12 minutes. You’ll come to what looks like a dirt road on the right. That’s where you can park and walk a minute or so to get to Airport Beach. If you get to the airport, you’ve gone too far.

18. Mosquito Pier Beaches, Rompeolas

Mosquito Pier beach with the pier in the far background and calm waters.

Many years ago, the U.S. Government wanted to build a highway to connect Vieques with the island of Puerto Rico. They got it started but abandoned the project after residents said they just didn’t want it. At least that’s how it was explained to us anyway.

The result was a decently long beach, cut in two by the pier. The effect of the pier then is that it creates two distinct beaches. And the good news is that one of them is always calm.

For example, if the wind is blowing strongly in a westerly direction, waves on the east side beach will be crashing into the shoreline. On the west side beach, the water will be completely calm. So, all you need to do is figure out the wind direction to know which of the Mosquito Pier beaches is the best one that day.

How to get to Mosquito Pier Beaches: From Isabella Segunda, follow highway 200 west for just under 20 minutes. It’s hard to miss Mosquito Pier because it juts way out into the Atlantic. The beaches are on either side of the pier. Pick the side that has the calmest water ont he day you’re there.

Are Vieques Beaches gay-friendly?

While many of the beaches we visited were practically empty, we did see a few gay couples at some of the more popular beaches. Rest-assured, Vieques (and all of Puerto Rico) is making an effort to attract LGBTQ visitors to the islands.

You shouldn’t have any issues catching rays at the beaches on Vieques.

A travel guide to visiting vieques, puerto rico.

Vieques Puerto Rico Travel Guide

Did you know the territory of Puerto Rico is more than just the one main island of Puerto Rico? About 1000 miles from Miami, Puerto Rico includes the main island of the same name, plus about 5 other smaller islands and even more little islets, but only Vieques and Culebra are inhabited year round. Vieques is a perfect little island to enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean at a slower pace. I hope you find this travel guide to visiting Vieques, Puerto Rico helpful.

History of Vieques, Puerto Rico

The islands of Puerto Rico and its indigenous population were colonized by the Spanish in 1493 until 1898 when America acquired it in the Spanish-American war. Although Puerto Rico is not a state and residents can’t vote, they have been US Citizens since 1917 and can move between the islands and US mainland freely. Spanish predominates, but both Spanish and English are the official languages and are spoken regularly.

The island of Vieques has a unique history. In the 1940’s the US government purchased 60% of the land in Vieques from the local people and for 6 decades used it as a testing site for weapons. In 1999, a Vieques native working for the navy was killed when a bomb misfired and dropped well off its mark.

Protests erupted over the US bomb testing on Vieques and in 2001 a treaty was signed to have the US remove its military from the island and halt testing by May 2003. Celebrations ensued when the military left the island for good.

The eastern part of the island still contains contamination (and some unexploded artillery!) and the cleanup is a work in progress by the US Department of Fish and Wildlife. That are is closed to the public, but most areas of the island are accessible to tourists including many of the quiet, remote, beautiful beaches in Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.

Playa La Chiva Vieques

Unfortunately, some statistics about Vieques suggest the cancer rate among locals is up to 25% higher than that on the main island of Puerto Rico.

About Vieques

With the navy’s departure, Vieques had an opportunity to grow its tourism industry. It didn’t take people long to discover this quiet, undeveloped gem…but so far tourism hasn’t changed its quiet pace and uncrowded beaches. For US citizens, part of the attractiveness is no passport or visa is required to visit Puerto Rico.

Getting to Vieques

Only about 8 miles east of the main island, Vieques is a pretty quick flight or ferry ride from Puerto Rico island. And it’s a small island at just 20 miles long and under 5 miles from top to bottom.

Flying to Vieques

This is the most convenient way to get there, as you can just take a flight from the San Juan International airport or from one of the other 2 Puerto Rico airports on the main island. The flight from San Juan International airport is only around 30 minutes but the cost can vary from $150 to $400 roundtrip (yikes).

Just 15 minutes from SJI is a smaller local airport still in San Juan called Isla Grande. Flight times are about 20 minutes and prices are a little more affordable…but still not cheap, in my opinion, at about $80 per way.

Thirdly, there is an airport on the Eastern tip of Puerto Rico called Ceiba. It is right next to the ferry port. You can fly to Vieques in about 10 minutes and $80 roundtrip. The catch is it will cost you about 2 hours and a hefty taxi charge to get to that side of the island from San Juan.

The last option for flights is to book an air charter. With a large group, it could be worth it.

Click HERE for airline tickets to Vieques from Isla Grande or Ceiba

Take the ferry to vieques.

The ferry to Vieques departs from a small port called Ceiba. As previously mentioned, it takes almost 2 hours to drive there from San Juan. I hired a taxi driver ahead of time to pick me up from my San Juan Hotel and drop me at the ferry terminal. We also arranged for him to pick me back up and take me back to San Juan in a few days. The cost is about $80 per way, which wouldn’t be so bad if shared among others. I recommend taking an early ferry in case there is a cancellation due to weather, and you could still catch a later ferry or flight from Ceiba. Also leaving SJ at like 6 am avoids traffic and is quicker.

ferry port ceiba puerto rico

Tickets for the ferry cost $2.00 for nonresident adults (what a bargain!). To buy online ahead of time (which I recommend, tickets have an extra $3.00 service charge. CLICK HERE.

The ferry arrives at the top middle part of the island near the main town of Isabel Segunda. The airport is just to the west of the ferry port in the same area.

Getting Around Vieques, Puerto Rico

You’ll definitely want a car. The island is small, but you’ll want to explore it.

My rental car company, Island Jeep and Coqui Car Rental , was just a block or two from where the ferry arrived, so I just drug my suitcase a little ways up the road until I found it. I rented a Jeep since many of the roads are potholed, dirt roads, and it isn’t cheap. I think I paid about $55 per day.

Island Jeep and Coqui Car rental vieques

Driving in Vieques is very easy. There are no big cities, the roads are decent, and the speeds are pretty slow. Just watch for the occasional wild horses in the road. Some of the roads in the National Wildlife Refuge are pretty bumpy and rocky. There was a time I turned around for fear of popping a tire and getting stuck out there alone.

Where to Stay in Vieques, Puerto Rico

I personally loved the little town of Esperanza on the southern side of Vieques. It takes about 15 minutes to drive there from where the ferry arrives and where I picked up my car. This side seemed to have prettier beaches and is very quiet. But the northern end of the island has a couple lovely looking hotels as well.

male con esperanza vieques

Malecon House

This is where I stayed in Esperanza and I absolutely loved it. It is such a beautiful little boutique hotel, everyone was so friendly, and you could easily walk along the malecon along the beach (not a great swimming beach though) and to the few little restaurants. There was easy parking, although you have to get out and open and close the gate if no one is around to do it.

They have a nice little complimentary breakfast and a small pool to relax by.

malecon house vieques

Finca Victoria

The jungle tree house vibes of this hotel are reminiscent of Bali. I didn’t stay here, but it would be at the top of my list for another visit and I have heard rave reviews from acquaintances.

Bravo Beach Hotel

If you want to stay closer to the ferry terminal in the main town, with plenty more restaurants and shops, Bravo Beach Hotel has good reviews and a nice view of the water.

Flamboyans Guesthouse

This cute little hotel with only 4 rooms is above Duffy’s restaurant. They have balconies with ocean views. There could be a bit of street noise with the location though.

This hotel in Esperanza is somewhat strange in style. It is very modern with a lot of concrete. I really liked it actually. I was only there for a few minute to meet with the group for a bioluminescence tour, but it would be somewhere I’d consider staying on another visit.

What to do in Vieques, Puerto Rico

This tiny island has a few fantastic highlights which make Vieques well worth the side trip from Puerto Rico. Aside from the undeveloped natural beauty and unspoiled beaches, Vieques offers two really unique experiences that I loved.

Bioluminescent Bay

Named Mosquito Bay, Vieques has what the Guinness Book called the brightest luminescent bay in the whole world. Located on the southern shore of Vieques, this makes staying on this side of the island another convenience if you want to do a bioluminescence tour. I had a great experience with  Taino Aqua Adventures .

We met at the El Blok hotel at the end of Esperanza where I was able to park my rental car in a large gravel lot. Then they take you in a minivan to Mosquito Bay where you get in kayaks and paddle out to the middle of the bay to see the phenomenon. The guides tell you about the ecology of the bay and if the moon is too bright, they bring covers so you can see the glow better. Time your visit during a new moon if possible! Also, you will get wet, so don’t expect to be able to bring a camera or any gear with you.

Esperanza Riding Company

This was my absolute favorite of all the thing to do in Vieques. Esperanza Riding Company  is professional, safe, and magical. The owner, Elizabeth, is from Virginia but she makes her home in Vieques much of the year and has an absolutely stunning home for her herd of island raised horses on a grassy bluff overlooking the ocean. They are healthy, well cared for, and loved.

esperanza riding company

Elizabeth is a pro. She refreshes you on the basics and accommodates any experience level. Helmets are provided and required, but she’ll let you take it off to get pictures on the beach. The rides can be booked as either private or part of a group depending on how many people book that day. I ended up being the only one, so Elizabeth and myself had plenty of time to chat. She’s an amazing human.

Esperanza riding company

The ride will take place either in the morning or late afternoon. We had originally planned for morning, but Elizabeth had to change the schedule and we ended up going at golden hour. I couldn’t be happier about this change. The colors and lighting were just magical. The ride took about 2 hours and we covered a ride through a part of town, a couple beaches including the black sand beach, and riding along a dirt path through the hills with a view. This was probably my favorite ride ever while traveling.

Best Beaches in Vieques

There are no shortage of awesome beaches in Vieques. They really are gorgeous and often times you can have an entire beach to yourself. So here they are in no particular order:

Sun Bay Beach

Sun Bay Beach vieques puerto rico

I didn’t edit any people out of this picture. It really was this empty. Granted I like to get to the beach early, say 9 or 10 am, but I pretty much had it all to myself much of the day. Sun Bay is one of the only beaches with bathroom facilities and little cafe. It is close to Esperanza, about a 5 minute drive, and you could walk there if you wanted. It’s about 1-1.5 miles from town.

sun bay golden hour vieques

There is an entrance fee of $4 if someone is manning the entrance booth. I think I paid one day and not the next. I found it well worth it. The beach has ample space to spread out and plenty of parking.

Playa Negrita “Black Sand Beach”

black sand beach vieques puerto rico

The black sand beach can be a little tricky to get to, but if you go horseback riding with Esperanza Riding Company, you’ll get to visit it. It’s really quite beautiful. You can also drive from Esperanza, it’s not far at about 1.7 miles but parking is limited. To reach the beach you walk down a “road” which is more of a creek bed. Alternatively, you could walk along the beach from town, which seems a bit tedious to me, especially if the tide was high.

Playa La Chiva “Blue Beach”

This beach and the rest of the following beaches I’ve listed are within the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. They’ll require traveling farther on dirt roads. I took an entire day to drive into the refuge and essentially explore every little dirt road that turned off to empty stunning beaches. Consider downloading an offline map so you can see what beaches you’re at.

Playa La Chiva offers some good snorkeling along the rocky areas at the end of the beach.

Caracas Beach

Caracas beach Vieques

I particularly liked Caracas beach. It is one of the first ones you come to in the wildlife refuge and it was just so picturesque with the big palm tree and white sand. There always seemed to be horses sleeping in the grass or walking near the beach. There are no bathrooms, but there are picnic tables and garbages. The whole place just enchanted me. I was there completely alone, so I felt like I was on a deserted island or something.

horses at Caracas beach

Pata Prieta “Secret Beach”

The road to this beach is unpaved and bit rocky. You come to a parking lot and then walk through the thick brush along a path down to the beach. It’s a smaller beach, but nicely framed by green foliage and again feels like you’re on a deserted tropical island. I posted up in the shade under a leafy tree and just relaxed for an hour or so.

Playa La Plata

A long stretch of beach at the end of the road, this is a great spot for a long beach stroll or wading way out in the shallow water. This is one of the places where I saw wild horses on the beach.

About the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge

The largest of only 9 wildlife refuges in the Caribbean, the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2000 to protect migratory birds and endangered species, to protect historical and archaeological resource sites, and provide a safe environment for the public to enjoy wildlife (source: US Fish and Wildlife Service) .

The entrance to the refuge is via a gate from 7 am to sundown (or earlier, so read the entrance sign). It closes automatically, whether you’re inside or not. A major portion of the eastern refuge is closed to the public due to danger of unexploded ordnance. Cleanup is an ongoing process.

Bring snacks and plenty of water. Drones are not allowed in the refuge and do not leave valuables in the car. I’d recommend renting a jeep or something with high clearance for driving around the refuge.

When to Visit Vieques, Puerto Rico

Personally, as long as I’m avoiding hurricane season from August to October, I’d be happy to visit Puerto Rico. The driest time of year is from December to March, which also makes it the high season. I went in mid December and the weather was perfect. Spring from April to June enjoys fewer crowds, lower prices, and usually still good weather.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this travel guide to Vieques, Puerto Rico.

The Complete 2023 Guide to Vieques Island

By: Author Kate O'Malley

Posted on Last updated: October 11, 2023

Home >> Caribbean >> The Complete 2023 Guide to Vieques Island

We lived on Vieques Island for six months, house sitting. This does not make us locals, nor does it make us tourists. We fall somewhere in between. It means we can offer you an amazing guide to Vieques Island. What it does make us is somewhat of authoritarians in so far as what you might want to know as a tourist or what it is like to live on Vieques.

When we first accepted the assignment to come and live here for six months, naturally the first thing we did was jump on the internet to find out firstly, where Vieques was exactly (that’s right, we had no idea!) and any information about what we would find here in as far as shops, facilities etc. The information we found was pretty lacking, to say the least. We had to ask the home owner if we needed to bring supplies from the big island (Puerto Rico).

We put together all the information we couldn’t find when we took a blind leap of faith and agreed to spend six months on this little Puerto Rican Island in the Caribbean.

Where is Vieques Island?

Vieques is an island in the north east Caribbean area. It is referred to as the Spanish Virgin Islands. Approximately 8 miles east of Puerto Rico, Vieques is 21 miles long and 4 miles wide, with a population of approximately 14,000.

How to Get to There

Getting to Vieques can be both easy and tricky. The first step in our guide to Vieques Island is helping you figure out transportation.

San Juan International (SJU-VQS) – a 30-minute flight. Isla Grande Airport (SIG-VQS) – 10 min cab ride from SJU, then a 20-minute flight. Ceiba Airport (RVR-VQS) – 1 hour cab from San Juan, then, a 7-minute flight. St Croix (STX-VQS) – 20min flight. All these flights are on small planes which have a less than normal baggage limit.  Last we checked it was 25lbs and $1 per lb for excess baggage.

The ferry leaves from the Fajardo Ferry Terminal which is about a 1-hour cab ride from San Juan. Vans are located outside the baggage claim at SJU. They can seat up to 10 people and will cost around $100 for the trip.

The ferry is 1 hour from Fajardo to Vieques. Prepare to wait and possibly bumped off if the ferry is full, regardless of having a ticket. Vieques residents are seated first and the system is not reliable. We got stuck on our first ferry ride. You can read about that here , but don’t be disheartened, just be prepared and patient.

Accommodation on Vieques

Vieques is not yet overloaded with your standard touristy island resorts people expect of the Caribbean. Even so, there is still a nice selection of accommodation options. To name a few (as there are only a few!) W Resort, Blue Horizon Resort, Horizon Resort, Hix Island House and the newly opened El Blok Resort.

There are also a number of smaller guest house style motels and B&B options in Esperanza and outlying areas of Isabelle II. Most people will opt for a private vacation rental, villa or casita. There are a number of websites offering private rentals.

Be mindful of theft on the island and always ensure your car is locked and valuables are not left in plain sight.

Getting Around on Vieques

Most people visiting Vieques rent a car and this is probably your best option. Most rentals on the island are 4×4 Jeeps, as the roads across the island can vary from okay to very bad to OMG someone has bombed the road. Access to many of the beaches is off road and can only be accessed in a 4×4. If you do rent a jeep be very careful of the wild horses roaming the island, they have a tendency to run out on the road, especially at night.

As with accommodation, do not leave valuables in the car – ever. Petty theft is rife on the island. You should leave your car empty and unlocked, especially at secluded beaches to avoid having windows smashed.

Keep Your Valuables Safe on the Beach : We’ve rounded up the Best Beach Safe Solutions to help you have a relaxing day at the beach or by the pool.

Vieques island, Wild Horses

There is a taxi service on the island as well as public vans. The public vans are identified by the “Vieques y Sus Barrios” sign on the windshield (Vieques and Neighborhoods). You can wave the vans down on the street or call to be picked up. They are also parked just outside the Ferry Terminal on the right as you head into town. Expect a minimum $10 fare if not sharing or around $3 per person.

Some of the public vans will take you to the main Wildlife Refuge beaches such as Playa Caracas (Red Beach) but not all. Only a few of the main beaches can be accessed by public vans as they are not 4WD.

Shopping on Vieques

Now it’s time to share the guide to Vieques Island shopping. Vieques has two towns, one on each side of the island. The main town is Isabelle Segunda (Isabelle II) and the other is Esperanza. Isabelle II is the administrative centre and capital of Vieques. Here you will find postal and banking services, doctors and dentists, as well as restaurants and a small collection of boutiques.

Esperanza is the small tourist town on the other side of the island. Here you will find a small strip of restaurants and bars as well as a few small souvenir boutiques and a basic colamado store. Vieques, whilst not having a lot of retail variety, has all the stores you need to provision for a holiday or for day to day shopping needs.

Here you will find a complete guide.

Eating & Drinking

Vieques has loads of great restaurants, mostly Puerto Rican and American. Restaurants range from great street-side vendors to upscale dining. There are many options, so we will not list them all, we will, however, share some we consider to be the better dining experiences on the island. Our perfect guide to Vieques Island restaurants! These are just some of the choices we have found to be worth a mention.

Beaches on Vieques

One of the big draw cards bringing people to Vieques is its stunning Caribbean beaches. This is one of the rare Caribbean islands where you can have a beach all to yourself. Well not all of them all of the time, but a lot of the time!

There are loads of beaches on Vieques and all of them are special for one reason or another. Some are hard to find, some are hard to get to, and some you are always guaranteed to have to yourself. So make the effort to visit as many as you can when on Vieques.

Here is a list of just a few to get you started.

Things to do on Vieques Other Than Beaches

Mosquito pier snorkelling.

Now it’s time to share our guide to Vieques Island experiences. If you drive out of Isabelle II on the 200 past the airport you will see the turnoff to Mosquito Pier. Drive all the way down until you reach the security gate and park your car. On the left-hand side near the security office, you will notice a set of concrete stairs leading into the water.

The stairs were put there by local dive companies and make a great entry point for snorkelling along the rock wall and pier. Turtles are frequently seen under the pier and there is a good assortment of fish and fan corals.

Bio Bay Bioluminescent Tour

Vieques has the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world and is a must-see when visiting Vieques. Pick a night with little or no moon and book with one of the operators who are licensed to enter the bay. You can take kayak tours or visit by electric boat. Either way, it is a magical sight and a great way to spend an evening.

Horse Riding

Vieques is famous for the wild horses that roam the island, so why not go for a horseback ride along the beach. There are a number of local operators offering rides along various beaches.

Paddle Boarding and Kayaking

Vieques has lots of protected bays with small islands and inlets to explore. There are a number of operators in Esperanza offering paddleboard and kayak hire and tours.

Explore the Central Playa Grande Sugar Mill Ruins

Closed since the early 1940s these ruins have been reclaimed by the jungle and make for a great explore. Here you will find all the details from our afternoon adventure there.

Visit the Old Fort

One of the last forts built by the Spanish in the Americas. It sits on the hill overlooking the town of Isabelle II. The old fort houses a museum and is often the venue for local concerts and art shows.

Vieques has the annual Fiestas Patronales , usually in the third week of July. Five days of party and celebration to honour the patron saint of Vieques and fishing. You can read about it here .

Go to a Cock Fight

Probably not most people’s cup of tea, but like it or not cockfighting is legal in Puerto Rico and is a very organised sport. Vieques has a cockfighting venue on the 200 just down the road from the big Morales supermarket. If you are curious or fancy a flutter (excuse the pun) most weekends during the season you will find some action there. You can read about our day at the cockfighting arena here .

The Do’s and Don’ts of Vieques: Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors

October 31, 2023 //  by  Gwen Engler //   Leave a Comment

Headed to Vieques for the first time? These Vieques travel tips will help you have a great first experience in one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets!

Oh, Vieques. You little hidden gem.

Blessed with beautiful Caribbean weather, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world, and a coast lined with pristine and protected beaches, Vieques is the tropical getaway you didn’t know you needed. Despite its many charms, however, it’s still relatively undiscovered by tourists.

Although no Puerto Rico itinerary is complete without a journey to Vieques, the island isn’t without its quirks and challenges. This post aims to help you navigate some of the more unique aspects of traveling to Vieques so that you can focus on enjoying this amazing place.

Vieques Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors

Do: consider splurging on a flight, at least one way..

There are two ways to get to Vieques: by air or by sea. The cost difference is significant; the ferry to Vieques costs less than $15 per adult per way (including luggage, taxes, and fees), while flying will set you back anywhere $150-$400.

While that price difference alone may be enough to have you headed for the ferry terminal, there are a lot of benefits to spending the money to fly to Vieques. First is convenience: the ferry terminal is over an hour from San Juan, so you’d need to rent a car to even access the boat. Another is that the ferry is notoriously unreliable and chaotic, with ticketed passengers frequently getting bumped off of departures and a seemingly complete disregard for order and process when embarking and disembarking.

Flying directly from San Juan allows you to bypass all the drama and head straight to your island paradise.

PS: If you do decide to take the ferry, don’t miss my list of Vieques ferry tips !

DON'T: Visit Vieques during or close to the full moon.

Perhaps the biggest reason to put Vieques on your Puerto Rico itinerary is the island’s incredible bioluminescent bay, which is the brightest in the world. If you want to be able to appreciate the phenomenon of millions of tiny organisms lighting up Mosquito Bay with a blueish glow, you’ll need to make sure the night will be dark enough to see it.

If you can, try to plan your Vieques trip as close as possible to the new moon, the phase when the moon is invisible and gives off no light. At the very least, avoid the week around the full moon, when the moon is brightest. Many tour operators won’t even offer trips to the bio bay during this time.

DO: Reserve your rental vehicle well in advance.

While you can certainly use  publicos – shared vans or cars that operate as taxis – to get around Vieques, it’s much better to rent your own vehicle. Not only will you have the flexibility of going where you want to go when you want to go there, but publicos don’t travel to the more remote beaches on the island… which are some of the ones most worth visiting!

I suggest reserving your rental car as soon as you know you’ll be traveling to Vieques, as availability is scarce and they frequently sell out. (Please note that you’re not allowed to bring a rental car from the mainland.) I also recommend springing for a four-wheel drive vehicle over a sedan, as the dirt roads to some of the farther-flung beaches can get pretty rough. You won’t want anything to hold you back from exploring!

DON'T: Rent a golf cart unless you have no other choice.

You may be tempted to rent a golf cart on Vieques, as they’re less expensive and more plentiful than rental cars and seem super convenient and fun for buzzing around the island. Resist! Golf carts are fine if you have limited mobility and need some help getting around the tourist hub of Esperanza, but they’re entirely unsuited to the rougher roads of the rest of the island. This is especially true for the roads you most want to travel: those on the way to the gorgeous beaches in the nature preserve!

We heard lots of stories from locals about what a nuisance golf carts are on Vieques, including a publico driver who spent the entire drive from Isabel Segunda to Esperanza regaling us with horror stories of the many recent golf cart crashes by tourists across the island. Do yourself a favor and just rent a car or use publicos.

DO: Arrange transportation to your hotel before you arrive.

This is especially true if you’re arriving by ferry. The terminal area can be a bit chaotic after a boat arrives, and the street in front of the terminal is narrow and congested. Make sure to arrange pickup before you arrive so that you don’t end up waiting forever for transportation.

One of the most popular and reliable services for public vans and private taxis is 741-TAXI (787-741-8294).

DON'T: Go into the wildlife preserve unprepared.

One of the absolute best things to do on Vieques is to spend a day (or more) exploring the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge . This wonderland of pristine, secluded beaches provides the ultimate opportunity to relax and get away from it all. And for those who seek a more active vacation, there are plenty of hiking, biking, kayaking, horseback riding, fishing, snorkeling, and other opportunities available, as well.

No trip to Vieques is complete without spending some time in the preserve, but it’s not to be done lightly. It doesn’t take long to lose cell reception, and other services – food, bathrooms, etc. – are extremely limited or nonexistent. Make sure to bring plenty of water, food and snacks, reef-safe sunscreen, and anything else you’ll need for your time. Unless you’re driving yourself, you also need to pre-arrange pickup, as you likely won’t be able to call for a publico inside the preserve.

DO: Stay more than one night.

Many people come to Vieques, take in the bio bay that night, and then head back to mainland Puerto Rico the very next day. While Mosquito Bay is certainly worth the trip, it’s such a waste not to spend at least one more day on the island! There are so many gorgeous beaches, great restaurants, fun hikes, lush mangrove forests, and lovely places to stay that you’re selling yourself short with just an overnight visit.

I suggest spending at least two full days on the island, which not only allows you time to take in more of Vieques’s many fun things to do but also gives you a backup night if your bio bay tour gets canceled due to weather.

DON'T: Ignore warning signs.

For decades, the United States used the island of Vieques for military training and exercises as well as weapons testing. While most of the island has been cleared of unexploded ordnance and other evidence of the US military occupation, there are still some spots where you could possibly encounter leftover munitions. (A large portion of the eastern side of the refuge, for example, is closed to the public for this reason.)

Always obey posted signs and  never venture into restricted areas. If you happen to spot an unexploded ordnance, or even have a suspicion, leave the area immediately and report your find.

All of this sounds very serious – and it is – but there’s no need to be fearful in coming to Vieques. Unsafe areas are clearly marked, and there’s no need for concern in the towns and populated areas and open beaches.

Tourism in Vieques

For many years this precious island was a secret escape for visitors in search of pristine  beaches  and seclusion.  Two-thirds of the island was in control of the Navy for six decades for bombing practices.  Since the Navy’s departure in 2003, Vieques became the new hottest destination in the Caribbean.  Ironically, the Navy presence kept the island like the Caribbean of the past, un-crowded, lush and serene with miles of beaches free of development.  Every time you visit the island you’ll find new changes, more restaurants, improved hotels and a good sense of prosperity and change.  Articles by major magazines and newspapers have given the island much exposure in the past years.

vieques tourist map

In 2017 Hurricane Maria ravaged the island causing major damage.  The people of Vieques, the business community and a helping hand from organizations joined forces to restore the island and welcome visitors again.  Choosing Vieques as your vacation destination or simply visiting for a day makes a significant impact on the island.

Even after all the challenges Vieques had to endure over the past years,  the island made it to the list of   Travel & Leisure’s World’s Best List “Top 15 Islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda & the Bahamas.

We invite you to come and experience why so many people fall in love with our island.
