Hey Journey owners! I have a 16 Jeep Compass and I have the same 4 cylinder 2.4 as some of you do. I have been dealing with this P000B code for a minute now and getting desperate as I can’t pass emissions. I’ve replaced - both cam sensors, both vvt solenoids, and the oil pressure switch. Everything checks out. Oil pressure is good, the car runs completely healthy no stutters. Code still pops up. The only thing however, the car would shake when I’m stopped in drive, not sure if that means anything.   

I’m down to diagnosing the wires. I used a digital multimeter to check the connectors on both cam sensors, both sides checked out at 5v. HOWEVER, I checked the opposite side where both VVT solenoids are, and both connections are giving me 0v. I read online this should be 12v.   

What are the chances both connections are bad? Am I just testing them incorrectly? I did the same exact way as I did with the cam sensors. Could this be the wire or the PCM itself? Any help/input is appreciated. Need someone to save me lol

Code is for EXHAUST camshaft position sensor SLOW RESPONSE. How long have you been going on oil change intervals?

  Check/clean/replace the oil control solenoids for the VVT system mounted on the cylinder head.

LOL, I see you say you already replaced OCS solenoids. RECHECK that oil is getting to them sufficiently for operation. You may have good engine oil pressure, but that does not mean the cylinder head is getting proper flow. How many miles on this 5 year old 2.4 motor?

74k miles. Oil change has been kept up all its life. Checked both cam sensor connectors with a digital multimeter, they both came out to 5v. I checked the vvt solenoids connectors, both intake and exhaust side said 0v. Read it’s supposed to be 12v. Idk if I’m doing the test right or it’s just completely dead, I did the same exact steps for all connectors.

The thing about the wiring being dead is, there are separate circuit malfunction codes.. not this dumb P000B.

And that is why I focused in on oil. SLOW RESPONSE, wiring is most likely OK. You may need to open up the Valve cover and confirm for possible sludge and oil supply passage for the Exhaust OCS. NOT plug and play parts or electricals.

Test The Sensor Circuit Hall Effect sensor: Start by checking the ground side of the circuit. To do this, connect a DMM set to DC volts between the battery positive terminal and sensor ground terminal on the harness side of the connector. If there is a good ground, you should get a reading of about 12 volts. Next, check the 5-volt reference side of the circuit by connecting a DMM set to volts between the battery negative terminal and the sensor reference terminal on the harness side of the connector. Turn the  Check the ground side of the circuit. To do this, connect DMM set to DC volts between the battery positive terminal and sensor ground terminal on the harness side of the connector. If there is a good ground, you should get a reading of about 12 volts. If not, the circuit will need to be diagnosed and repaired. Test The Oil Control Solenoid Remove the solenoid connector. Use a digital multimeter set to ohms to check the internal resistance of the solenoid. To do this, connect the meter between the solenoid B+ terminal and the solenoid ground terminal. Compare the resistance measurement to the factory repair specifications. If the meter displays a reading out of specification, or out of limits (OL) indicating an open circuit, the solenoid should be replaced. It's also a good idea to remove the solenoid to visually inspect the screen for metal debris. Check The Oil Control Solenoid Circuit Check the power side of circuit: Remove the solenoid connector. With the vehicle ignition on, use a digital multimeter set to DC volts to check for power at the solenoid (usually 12 volts). To do this, connect the negative meter lead to battery negative terminal and the positive meter lead to the solenoid B+ terminal on harness side of the connector. The meter should read 12 volts. If not, the circuit will need to be diagnosed and repaired. Check the ground side of the circuit: Remove the solenoid connector. With the vehicle ignition on, use a digital multimeter set to DC volts to check for ground. To do this, connect the positive meter lead to battery positive terminal and the negative meter lead to the solenoid ground terminal on harness side of the connector. Command the solenoid on with an OEM equivalent scan tool. The meter should read 12 volts. If not present, the circuit will need to be diagnosed and repaired. Check the timing chain and VVT actuators If everything checks out up to this point, the problem may be with timing chain, corresponding, or VVT actuators. Remove the necessary components to access the timing chain and actuators. Check the chain for excess play, broken guides and/or tensioners. OBD II fault code P000B is a generic trouble code that is defined as “B” Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 1”, and is set when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects a slow response from the camshaft labeled “B” on cylinder bank # 1 on V-type engines that are fitted with variable valve timing. Note that-

  • This code only applies to engines with VVT (Variable Valve Timing) systems
  • “Slow response” refers to the camshaft being slow to respond to commands from the PCM to either advance or retard
  • While “Camshaft B” typically refers to exhaust camshafts, this labeling convention is not observed by all manufacturers, so be sure to consult reliable service information to identify the camshaft labeled “B” on the affected application
  • “Bank 1” refers to the bank of cylinders on V-type engines that contains cylinder #1

The primary purpose of VVT (Variable Valve Timing) systems is to improve engine power and performance while improving fuel economy and decreasing emissions at the same time. In terms of operating principles, variable valve timing systems use pressurized engine oil to act on actuators that rotate the camshafts either against or with the camshaft’s normal direction of rotation.

By rotating the camshaft against its normal direction of rotation, the valve timing on that camshaft is advanced, i.e., the valves open sooner than they would normally have opened while rotating the camshaft with its normal direction of rotation has the opposite effect, i.e., the valves open later than they would normally have opened. Note that on some engines, only the intake camshaft can be adjusted, while on others, both the intake and exhaust camshafts can be adjusted both relative to each other, and relative to abase setting.

As a practical matter, adjustable camshafts return to their “normal” or base setting when the engine is not running (or is running at low speeds), and the PCM obtains data from dedicated camshaft position sensors to confirm this setting when the ignition is turned on. This information is used to identify cylinder #1, as well as to calculate appropriate ignition and fuel injection timing strategies for cylinder #1 when the engine is cranked. This information is also compared to the position of the crankshaft relative to a fixed reference point, and the position of all other adjustable camshafts on the engine for purposes of monitoring the correlation between the crankshaft and all camshafts on the engine.

In practice, VVT systems are controlled, managed, and monitored continuously by the PCM that obtains data from several engine and driveability sensors to determine under what conditions the VVT system should be activated. When the PCM deems operating conditions suitable, it opens oil control solenoids to allow pressurized engine oil to act on the camshaft actuators, and in a fully functional system, the PCM expects the desired change in valve timing to occur in a predetermined amount of time, which is typically measured in milliseconds.

However, in cases where the change in valve timing takes longer than expected, miscorrelations between camshafts and/or the crankshaft occur, which has the effect of increasing both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, while reducing engine power, at the same time. Therefore, if the PCM detects that the camshaft labeled “B” on bank 1 is slow to respond to commands to alter its position relative to its normal base setting, it will recognize that it cannot control the valve timing effectively, and it will set code P000B and illuminate a warning light as a result.

This image shows the location (arrowed) of a camshaft position sensor on a 2014 VW Jetta. Note though that the locations and appearance of camshaft position sensors vary greatly between applications. In some cases, like the example shown here, the sensor is easily accessible, but in many other instances, camshaft position sensors can be hidden inside timing covers, behind unrelated components, or under cosmetic engine covers. Therefore, it is recommended that reliable service information be consulted to identify and locate the affected sensor correctly to prevent the inadvertent replacement of the wrong parts.

Common causes of code P000B are largely similar across all applications, and could include one or more of the following-

  • Damaged, burnt, shorted, disconnected, or corroded wiring and/or connectors
  • Defective oil control solenoid
  • Defective or malfunctioning camshaft actuator
  • Dirty, degraded, contaminated, or unsuitable engine oil
  • Insufficient oil pressure
  • In some cases, damaged engine timing components such as worn or damaged timing chains, timing chain guides, or timing sprockets can contribute to code P000B

Symptoms of code P000B are largely similar across all applications, but note that the severity of one or more symptoms listed here may vary between applications and engine designs/types-

  • Stored trouble code and illuminated MIL (CHECK ENGINE) light
  • In some cases, multiple other codes relating to camshaft/crankshaft correlations may be present along with P000B
  • Depending on both the application and the nature of the problem, mechanical noises may be present
  • Fuel consumption may increase noticeably
  • Varying degrees of power loss may be present
  • Exhaust emissions may increase to the point where the vehicle may fail an emissions test, or where catalytic converter failure may occur
  • Engine may run roughly at all speeds, or only at some speeds
  • Engine may stall frequently and/or unpredictably
  • Engine may be hard to start both when it is hot and cold
  • Gear shifts may be harsh, erratic, or unpredictable

I don't have a whole lot of experience with the challenger's camshaft position sensor yet, but I have bad this problem on other dodge vehicles. I've replaced a few of them in other vehicles. Did the engine run rough when that code was thrown ? In the past, when mine went out the vehicles would run rough, or not at all. Well as an update, I took my car in again yesterday morning for the check engine light and it had the same code again. Dealer had no loaner vehicles for me to drive and as of right now they still dont know whats wrong with it! This is fustrating. I have not even owned this car 2 months and its been to the dealer 3 times already! Ugghh.

Sounds to me the Cam sensor needs replaced. Typically these are a magnetic sensor and from what I understand can develop "dead" spots. How this happens is beyond me, but I had a sensor go out in a similar fashion on a different vehicle. Typically the sensor is stationary and the the cam is the thing that rotates. 2015 dodge journey p000b

Cam and crank sensor go out way too often. It senses the speed of each, and can detemine a timing chain failure if the speed delta is too high. I havent dealt with this on a Dodge, but on 4 other vehicles. When they start to go, you usually get a hesitation when you hammer it, as the worn sensor has a lapse before reading a good speed. When it finally fails, most cars wont start. The computer doesnt allow spark to avoid valve to piston contact.

The "ECO" part does make sense since that's MDS being activated and it's tied into VVT. If the cam timing isn't working right then MDS is likely being disabled. I'm surprised the dealer hasn't just replaced the sensor. Obviously clearing the code isn't fixing the problem, how many more times do they think is reasonable to just clear the code before taking some other action? Dealers do want to reproduce the problems before making repairs, but sometimes that's not possible and they should just replace the sensor, IMO. Good luck, let us know how it works out!

Picked up my car this morning. It is fixed. Sticking oil valve was the problem. Wierd. Oh well its done and hopefully fixed for good. Thanks for all the help!  

Ah, the infamous "oil control valve". Must be reasonably problematic as these have been updated and "back ordered" for the last few weeks. Good to hear that she's running well again.

very satisfied so far, speedy service and customer friendly, This is my 3rd one in the past year, the last 2 were purchased from a Florida re-builder and both times they failed within 3 months. there prices were higher and there turn around time between 6 to 9 weeks.

A local shop wanted to charge me $4,500 to install a new TIPM, I removed mine and sent it in to Module Masters. They repaired it and had it back to me in a week and I was able to install it and get back on the road!

After reinstalling my Module Master rebuilt TIPM, everything electrical is working correctly!! Thanks so much for a quality job!
