2014 dodge journey car seat installation

The Journey has a 5th lower anchor in the 2nd row – which theoretically allows a car seat to be installed in 2C with LATCH (but not when a car seat is in 2P)… but the reality can be quite different.

Below is an image from the owner’s manual, showing that there are 5 lower anchors (A through E). A and B are a pair to install a car seat in 2P, B and C are a pair to install a car seat in 2C, and D and E are a pair to install a car seat in 2D. B can NEVER be used by more than one car seat at a time.

Note: The 2009-2010 Journey does not have a head restraint in 2C – since 2011 there is a head restraint for 2C. Otherwise the back seats are identical in all model years.

i just bought a 2010 dodge journey and i can't install a car seat in the middle seat? (the middle row) because the seat belt doesn't lock?

is this a problem with just mine, or do all of them not lock?

i couldn't get it to install tight enough with the LATCH and it was too far over and taking up the other seat..

Do you mean that the retractor does not lock or that the latch plate will not lock in the belt catch?

Like

Generally you should have one of these seatbelt clamps,

they usually come with seat sometimes affixed to rear

of childs carseat.

From the manual:

In this mode, the shoulder belt is automatically pre-locked. The belt will still retract to remove any slack in the shoulder belt. The Automatic Locking Mode is available on all passenger-seating positions with a combination lap/shoulder belt.

Use the Automatic Locking Mode anytime a child safety seat is installed in a seating position that has a belt with this feature. Children 12 years old and under should always be properly restrained in the rear seat.

  • Allow the belt to retract. As the belt retracts, you will hear a clicking sound. This indicates the safety belt is now in the Automatic Locking Mode.

Unbuckle the combination lap/shoulder belt and allow it to retract completely to disengage the Automatic Locking Mode and activate the vehicle sensitive (emergency) locking mode.

I noticed the same on our 2011 Journey. Pulling the belt out all the way on the 2nd row middle seat does not engage the locking mechanism, even though the manual states that it should have the ALR. Not sure if it's an issue with our Journey, or if the manual is incorrect.

onecrazyfoo4u

You really should use the latch system...much better than seatbelts. If you don't think its tightening enough, then kneel (put all your weight) on the car seat while tightening. That's how I do it and they are rock solid.

You're right, I just tried the center belt in my 2013 and it does not have ALR either, yet the 2013 manual says the same thing - that it is available in all passenger seating positions with a combination lap/shoulder belt.

I agree you should use the latching system. I had no problem getting mine tight enough. I used those foam pool noodles so it would not dent the seat cushion and it is nice and snug, and only denting the pool noodle.

I see that this is an old topic but im just curious if anyone ever found out if this was a defect or not. We need to be able to switch cars easily and the Latch system is not as easy as the seatbelt.

The dealership is clueless about what a locking seatbelt is.

There is a clip that comes with most child safety seat s that clips the belt together

this is what it looks like in my situation. This will stop it from unspooling keeping the belt tight.

CIMG0772.JPG

I used the exact same clip for my daughter's car seat !  She 22 now, so these clips have been around for a while.

Locking seatbelts are on the outboard passenger seats (front passenger, second row left and right passengers, third row passengers.)  It is not available for the driver (as the installation of one would be a safety issue) and it doesn't exist in the second row middle seat.

To activate them, pull the seatbelt all the way out.  It will click, and then click repeatedly as you let it back in.  Only when it retracts to a certain point will the locking mechanism release.

To install a car seat using the ALR belts, position the seat first, route the seat belt through the seat, and insert the belt into the latch for that seat.  Then, fully extend the belt and release it, allowing the retractor to catch.  Tighten the belt as necessary.

For the middle seat, use the latch plate per the instructions of the seat manufacturer.

LATCH anchors are substantially easier to work with.  Keep in mind the weight restrictions of the vehicle (LATCH is usually about 65 pounds or so, but the exact amount is in the manual) for using LATCH anchors, and remember that this is the combined weight of the child and the seat.

3 Across Installations: Which Car Seats Fit in a Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey is one of the newest mid-sized SUVs / crossovers on the market, offering an alternative to a market full of SUVs like the Honda Pilot , Toyota Highlander , Ford Edge , Jeep Wrangler , and Jeep Grand Cherokee . It’s a sharp looking SUV and one of the only mid-sized SUVs out there that offers a 3rd row, along with SUVs like the Pilot, Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe , Ford Flex , and Volvo XC90 , which made me curious about how it does when it comes to successful 3 across car seat installations.

You know the basics of best practices in car seat safety: rear-face as long as possible ( ideally until 4 !), and then forward-face as long as possible ( ideally until 8 !), and then booster until a regular belt fits your child ( which typically happens between 10 and 12 ).

However, for this information to be helpful, you need to know if a particular car seat will fit in your particular vehicle. Here are my experiences fitting a range of seats inside various years of the Dodge Journey. I’ll periodically update each page as I try more seats in more positions.

You can access  the complete 3 across guide for every vehicle here  and  the complete list of recommended seats here . 3 across car seat images are courtesy of Wikipedia.

Tips and Tricks:

This is the only generation of the Dodge Journey, and it is 192 inches long and 72 inches wide. Achieving 3 across installations should be relatively straightforward at that width in the 2nd row, but achieving even 2 across will be significantly more difficult in the 3rd row jump seats.

It may also be slightly easier to achieve a 3 across installation in the 2009 and 2010 model years than in the 2011 and later model years due to slight updates in the Journey’s interior trim linings.

It’s also important to note that in the Dodge Journey, there are no tethers in the 3rd row if a 3rd row is present, and there are only 2 tethers in the 2nd row. Some parents also state that the 3rd row Journeys are wider than the 2nd row Journeys, although I haven’t been able to verify this.

Furthermore, the center seat is the one I find most tricky for a good install with particular seats, due to the plastic hinges present as well as the locking latch plate on the seat belt itself. The buckle stalk is also fixed in place and rather short, which can also make things tricky.

I have a Dodge Journey and nine month old twins. We are starting to do our legwork in preparation of moving up from our infant carriers. First Issue, one of the twins is much smaller than the other. I have read about convertible seats such as the Alpha Omega Elite, but also heard they really don't function well for smaller babies in the rear facing mode. Our Graco carriers already touch the back of the front seats. Not sure which of the convertible car seats will function best in rear and front facing modes in our smaller second row seat.

By "smaller babies" we generally mean newborns. An AOE will fit nine month olds well. However, it isn't the highest recommended seat here. It can be a bear to install, has a 35 pound rear facing weight limit, the new ones have a 50 pound harness limit and 17.5" top slots, the 40 pound versions have a 14.5" top slot height, and they make lousy boosters. The good news is that generally convertibles fit better than an infant seat (are your Snugride handles up? That may save space. They can't be right at the top of the shell, either straight up or below the shell). They don't have to be so reclined and so they often take up less space. I'd look at the Learning Curve True Fit, the Graco My Ride, the Evenflo Triumph Advance, and the Safety 1st Complete Air. They should all fit, fit for a long time, and be easy to use and install. My friend has a Journey and a 9mth old. Her LO is in a Chicco infant seat, but will eventually move into a Britax Marathon rf, so they tried it and it fits perfectly. Her DH is really tall and can drive comfortably with the MA rf. It was an easy, easy install, too, in the Journey.

Learn how to install a car seat in your 2009 Dodge Journey. Regardless of whether your make has the latch system or the seat belt attachment method, this video shows how to tether a baby seat or a booster seat to the rear seats. In addition this video shows how to connect rear facing infant car seats, rear facing toddler car seats, forward facing child seats and booster with latch seats. The connection point to your 2009 Journey is then same regardless of what car seat is chosen. Note that most rear facing car seats do not utilize the center anchor point to connect the car seat but rely on the two lower anchor points exclusively. The center anchor point is typically only used for forward facing car seats. You should always defer to the owners manual for your specific car seat for size determinations and front vs rear facing recommendations. Determining whether your child should be front facing or rear facing in your 2009 Dodge Journey is dependent on the height and weight of your child and the specific car seat model. The rear facing position is safest and children should remain rear facing as long as possible. It is imperative that newborns are always rear facing.

2014 Dodge Journey Interior Review

The 2014 Dodge Journey's interior earns praise from test drivers who say its materials are upscale. The Journey comes with a standard touch screen, but reviewers prefer the optional 8.4-inch touch screen because its larger size makes it easier to use. They also like its intuitive interface and some say it's one of the better infotainment systems in the class. Although the Journey offers an optional third row, test drivers say it's too small for adults but adequate for little kids. One reviewer says the front seats offer mediocre comfort, good height and expansive visibility, but that tall drivers might have difficulty reaching the steering wheel. Reviewers appreciate the 2014 Dodge Journey's convenient storage spaces and say its built-in second-row booster seats are handy for families. Cargo space is small for the class, though the front passenger seat folds flat transporting longer items.

2014 Journey Photos

2014 Dodge Journey Angular Front

  • "Inside, the Dodge Journey's materials are high in quality, the design is clean and modern and the available technology is pretty easy to use. We especially like the extra-large 8.4-inch touchscreen interface offered in all models except the SE. It's available with or without navigation." -- Edmunds
  • "The materials are upscale in look and feel, and the dashboard manages to look sleek and dressy without compromising the Journey's gauge legibility or ergonomics." -- AutoTrader
  • "In place of the old Rubbermaid interior is a thoroughly improved cabin highlighted by a rich-looking soft-touch touch dashboard and Dodge's three-spoke corporate steering wheel." -- Left Lane News
  • "Journey's cabin is class competitive, with good fit and finish. Materials might seem a bit dull, but nothing feels cheap." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

The Journey seats five, or seven with an optional third-row seat. Critics agree that the available third row isn't suitable for adults, but has just enough room for two small children. The second-row seats recline and are available with built-in child booster seats, which reviewers say is a convenient feature for families. One reviewer says that if the driver’s seat is set too far back, tall drivers might have trouble reaching the steering wheel, because it doesn't telescope very far. He also notes that while the front seats don't have remarkable support, there’s great outward visibility from the driver’s seat. The Journey has standard cloth seats, while leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats and a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat are optional on upper trims.

  • "The Journey's front seats offer mediocre support, but they do sit you up nice and high, affording an expansive view of the road. The steering column telescopes on all models, though those with long legs may still find the wheel too far away." -- AutoTrader
  • "Also helping that cause is the Journey's available third-row seat, which is bundled with a separate rear air-conditioner. This seat is far from adult-friendly, but if you need to take a couple extra kids to a T-ball game, it's handy." -- Edmunds
  • "The first and second rows of seats drew praise from their occupants, but the consensus opinion is that the third row is more appropriate for the kids in the family." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The available booster seats are a boon for families with children who have outgrown their car seats, but are still required by law to be in boosters. They're an inexpensive option that's well worth having." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

Standard features on the 2014 Dodge Journey include a 4.3-inch Uconnect touch-screen radio with an auxiliary jack, a USB port, a six-speaker stereo, heated mirrors and dual-zone air conditioning. The Journey also comes with Dodge's Enter 'n Go keyless entry and push-button start system, which allows drivers to enter the vehicle and start the ignition without having to use a key fob. Optional features on upper trims include an 8.4-inch touch-screen Uconnect infotainment system with Bluetooth audio, hands-free texting, navigation, a rear-seat 9-inch video screen, remote start and a rearview camera.

While the Journey's touch screen is a feature not offered standard with many rivals, some reviewers say the screen and interface are a bit too small. Test drivers recommend buyers choose a trim that includes the 8.4-inch touch-screen Uconnect infotainment system, which they say works intuitively and has a clear display.

See the full 2014 Dodge Journey specs »

  • "But the big technology news in the Journey is the 8.4-in touchscreen (optional on the SXT model and standard on the Limited and R/T models), which brings iPad-like crispness and ease-of-use into your driving experience. It's one of the best infotainment interfaces on the market, and it even includes an SD-card interface to give you more options in portable media. We highly recommend it." -- AutoTrader
  • "Select the available audio system with the 8.4-inch touch screen and Uconnect communication and connectivity choices, and you'll be operating one of the industry leaders in intuitive functions." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The standard touchscreen interface is a bit on the small side, but it works well enough." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

The 2014 Dodge Journey has 67.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row. Five-seat models have 39.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row, while seven-seat models have 37 and 10.7 cubic feet of space behind the second and third rows, respectively. The Journey has a storage compartment built into the floor in front of the second row, and test drivers say it's great for toting snacks and small items. Reviewers like the Journey's convenient small-storage spaces, which include a storage compartment under the front passenger seat, which one reviewer says is good for stowing small valuables.

  • "There are useful storage areas, too. You can store snacks and cold drinks in bins built into the floor of the second-row seating area, and a compartment under the front passenger seat is handy for stashing valuables." -- Edmunds
  • "Prospective buyers will be attracted to its interior, which is full of clever and handy storage spaces, including under-floor compartments beneath the 2nd-row seats and a front passenger-seat bottom cushion that lifts to access yet more space for odds and ends." -- Kelley Blue Book

Where to Find Free Car Seats

State or local health departments.

State or local health departments are government-run organizations that oversee public health issues at a state or local level. Examples include the Texas Department of State Health Services, the California Department of Public Health, the New York State Department of Health, among others.

You can find these departments by searching for your specific state or local health department’s official website or contacting them through their official phone number.

They often serve low-income families or those who demonstrate a specific need, but some programs may serve all residents.

It’s important to note that the availability of programs and eligibility criteria can vary by state or even by county. Contacting the department directly provides the most accurate information.

Many of these departments’ programs require you to take a short safety course before receiving a car seat.

Non-Profit Organizations

Non-profit organizations operate independently from the government and are dedicated to addressing a particular social issue or advocating for a specific cause. Examples include Safe Kids Worldwide, United Way, Baby2Baby, and Buckle Up for Life.

The latter has donated tens of thousands of car seats to low-income families and often requires participation in safety classes.

You can find them through an online search. Websites like Charity Navigator can help determine their legitimacy.

They may serve a wide range of individuals, but usually those who demonstrate a specific need or fall within a certain income bracket.

Non-profit organizations often rely on funding and donations, so the availability of Free Car Seats can be contingent on these factors.

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Programs

WIC is a federal assistance program providing nutrition education, healthy food, breastfeeding support, and other services for low-income women and children.

You can search for your local WIC agency online or through local government resources.

WIC generally serves low-income women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, postpartum, or have children under the age of five. If you’re already enrolled in WIC, you may have access to a car seat program.

Similar to other programs, WIC often requires you to take a safety course before receiving a car seat.

Medicaid is a state and federal program that provides health coverage to people with low income, including some low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities.

You can apply for Medicaid through the Health Insurance Marketplace website or your state’s Medicaid website.

Medicaid generally serves low-income individuals and families. Those eligible for Medicaid might also be eligible to receive a free car seat.

Similar to other programs, Medicaid often requires you to take a short safety course before receiving a car seat.

Insurance Companies

Insurance companies are organizations that provide insurance policies to individuals or entities, covering a range of risks. Examples include State Farm, Allstate, Geico, etc.

If you’re looking for your current insurance provider, you can visit their official website or contact their customer service. If you’re searching for new insurance providers, online comparison tools can be useful.

Insurance companies generally serve their policyholders, but it can depend on the specifics of the policy and the provider. Many insurance companies provide car seats free of charge to insured new mothers or pregnant women.

The availability of Free Car Seats can be a part of specific insurance benefits. It’s crucial to read your policy carefully or speak directly to an agent for accurate information.

State Car Seat Inspection Stations

State Car Seat Inspection Stations, including firehouses and sheriff departments, are locations where certified technicians can inspect car seat installations for safety. Examples could include your local fire station, police department, or sheriff’s department.

You can locate these stations using the NHTSA’s Child Car Seat Inspection Station Locator or through an online search of your local city or county’s resources.

They serve the general public, providing safety services and occasionally Free Car Seats to families in need.

Not all inspection stations offer Free Car Seats, so it’s advisable to call and ask in advance. They often have programs for the free installation of car seats and can help you find new car seats for free as they are familiar with various charities.

Local Churches

Local churches are religious institutions that often have community outreach programs.

You can search for local churches online or through a directory.

They typically serve community members. Churches may be able to connect you with charities or institutes that provide resources to low-income families.

Availability of resources may vary widely, so it’s best to reach out directly.

Pregnancy Life Centers

Pregnancy Life Centers are often non-profit organizations that offer various resources, support, and education for women during pregnancy and early parenthood. They can provide important aid such as maternity items, baby supplies, and even Free Car Seats.

To locate a Pregnancy Life Center, you can do an online search specifying your local area. Some well-known national networks of pregnancy centers include Care Net and Heartbeat International, but there are also many independent centers that may be local to your area.

Pregnancy Life Centers primarily serve women who are pregnant or recently became mothers. They aim to support these women through their pregnancy journey and beyond, often extending their services to the early years of child-rearing.

Most Pregnancy Life Centers offer their resources and aid as part of a wider program, often involving parenting or childbirth classes. Expectant mothers who enroll in these classes may be eligible to receive items like car seats free of charge. The specifics of what’s provided and the requirements for receiving these items can vary by center, so it’s best to contact them directly for detailed information.

Do remember that these centers are often funded through donations and community support, so the availability of specific items may fluctuate. They strive to provide as much assistance as they can to support mothers and their children.

Hospitals and Health Care Systems

Hospitals and Health Care Systems are medical institutions that provide patient treatment with specialized staff and equipment. Examples include Kaiser Permanente, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, etc.

You can locate these through a local directory or online search.

They typically serve pregnant women, new parents, or families with young children who are patients within their system. Hospitals may provide car seats without any cost or direct you toward some great local resources.

Not all hospitals or healthcare systems offer this service. It’s best to directly contact the hospital or health care system for information on any available programs.
