This is a relatively heavy tennis racquet, built for control and feel. The Pro Staff is one of the top 8 tennis racquets for control . The 16×19 string pattern allows you to generate plenty of spin on your groundstrokes or slice on your backhand like Federer himself.

The Pro Staff is an Excellent Racquet for Control & has Great Stability

When compared with some of the other best tennis racquets for advanced players , the Pro Staff has fantastic control. The racquet’s narrow frame and smaller head size allow you to move the ball around the court with precision.

Singles players will find that their groundstrokes, volleys, and returns are more accurate with the Pro Staff. With the open 16×19 string pattern, you can still create good spin as well.

Doubles players will love the control, feel, and touch from the Pro Staff. You’ll be able to hit more accurate volleys and better drop shots too.

The Best Alternatives to the Wilson Pro Staff

My Experience Playing with the Wilson Pro Staff 97

I played with the Wilson Pro Staff 97 v14 for a few practice sets and drills. When hitting with the newest Wilson Pro Staff, I didn’t notice a significant difference from the previous v13 model.

The Control, Feel, and Touch of the Pro Staff are Still Off-the-Charts

This is still one of my favorite racquets for control and feel. The racquet feels so comfortable and stable on contact that I can redirect the tennis ball with ease. The volleys and transition shots are especially effective with the Pro Staff.

Similar to Ons Jabeur, who uses the Pro Staff, my drop shots and short angles were extremely accurate.

The Pro Staff’s Stability Helped Me Defend Against Pace

The Wilson Pro Staff offers great stability because of its weight. This, of course, varies depending on which version you choose.

I had no issues volleying against hard-hit groundstrokes. Even when I made contact slightly off-center, I still had decent control. The ability to absorb pace with this racquet is excellent.

Returning against big servers was also a nice bonus. I could stretch out on my backhand or forehand side and still hit a solid return. Again, even slight mishits were getting over the net and staying in the court.

The stability made defending hard-hit balls much easier. The Pro Staff allowed me to stay in the point and transition to the net with ease.

My Depth & Baseline Power was Lacking

The only drawback to playing with this racquet was the lack of power from the baseline, especially if the opponent hit a slower ball. I did not easily hit the ball with depth on my groundstrokes, and my serve was definitely slower than normal.

I was playing mostly doubles, so I tried to get to the net as quickly as possible, where this racquet excelled.

After testing the Wilson Pro Staff v14, I’d recommend it for high-level intermediate & advanced players who like to get to the net and can generate their own power from the baseline.

If I were to stick with the Pro Staff, I think I would love it for the 3 games I’m not serving (in doubles). However, since I don’t generate much natural power on my serve, I struggled to get free points from missed returns.

There’s also a 100 sq. In. version exclusive to Tennis Warehouse called the Six One. I’m not good enough to use a 98 or 97, but the 100 is a the perfect balance of power, spin, and control. It’s been a total game-changer for me.

How does this compare to the TEAM edition? Why pay extra, i mean for 100 sq inches when does it for cheap?

Hi Johnny, the Team version is lighter and has a bigger head size. It’s better for beginner or intermediate players who need something more forgiving with a bigger sweet spot.

Thanks for the helpful review. I’m looking to move from a prestige to a pro staff and the 97 v13 rounds right in my ball park. My only concern is lack of power, would you recommend a certain string to address this and added weight in the head?

Hi Richard, those racquets are very comparable. You shouldn’t lose much power from that switch. If you do feel like you’re missing some power, you can do one of three things.

1) add some lead tape to the head 2) change your string type to a more power-oriented string 3) lower your string tension

I’d recommend trying out a lower tension first if you already have a string you like. Adding lead tape would be the next best option.

Hi Will, I really love pro staff feel and touch but i have some problem with it. The weight of the pro staff when i carry it around the court and the swing of it made me struggle after 3 games.

Hi Sai, it sounds like you just need a lighter weight version of the Pro Staff. They make several lightweight options.

I have been playing with the RF97 and earlier models for years and I like the stability and control of that racquet. They are getting harder to find however, and I was wondering if you have a replacement idea. I’m a 4.0, strong enough to wield it, and play doubles exclusively.

Hello Will, thanks a lot for the helpful review here. Im struggling a bit with depth and power in my backhand and service too, im trying to find a new frame that gives me the same feeling i have with the ProStaff 97 CV ( i use it with poly strings at 22kg already to get more power). What do you recommend for 2024? I grew up using Prince racquets so the prince sinergy 98 seems interesting, maybe yonex? Im an advanced player, have been playing for more then 25 years. THANKS!

Hey Nestor! I’m Nate, the new racquet expert for Tennis Tribe. Based on what you’ve mentioned , you have a few choices. First, don’t be afraid to try to drop the tension even further, to the 18-20kg range. Poly strings work great at low tensions.

Another option would be to customize your racquet by adding a little bit of weight at the tip of your racquet. If you’re looking to switch racquets though, the Prince Synergy 98 would definitely be a good racquet to check out. The main difference you’ll notice is that your Pro Staff will be a little more head light and easier to swing.

The other racquet I’d recommend demoing is the new Yonex Percept 97. They added a little extra stiffness to the racquets with this update giving them a little more power than the previous version. I have a couple of questions, what is X in pro staff v14? What is the difference between Pro Staff v14L and TEAM? What do you recommend between both?

Hi David, this is Nate, the new gear reviewer/expert. The “X” is just the name of the new 100 square inch version of the Pro Staff. It is a little lighter and more forgiving than the standard Pro Staff. As for the 97L vs the Team, the two main differences are the head size and the weight/swing weight. The 97L has a 97 square inch head, while the Team has a 100 square inch head. The Team is also a little bit lighter than the 97. If you’re a beginner or low-intermediate, I would recommend the Team because it is a little easier to swing and more forgiving. If you are a higher-level intermediate or a promising junior player that prefers more control but isn’t quite ready for the weight of the standard Pro Staff, then the 97L would be the better choice.

I am using PS97 v14 for the last 2 months Till now I have been using Ezone 98 Tour

I love Pro Staff using with Confidential at 50lds. Nice felling and excellent control.

But what I noticed is that few shots go long beyond base line Is it related to launch angle or string or someting else? Any recommendations?

Hi Konstanitinos, I’m Nate, the gear reviewer/expert here at The Tennis Tribe.

You are already using a fairly low-powered string with good spin potential, so it probably isn’t the strings. While both racquets have a 16×19 string pattern, the Ezone 98 Tour actually has a slightly pattern. One way you can see this is by noticing that there are 8 holes in the throat of the Ezone 98 Tour, but only 6 holes in the throat of the Pro Staff.

If you want to achieve a lower launch angle with the Pro Staff, I would recommend increasing the tension 2-4 pounds.

Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90 Review

I had never tried the first edition of the pro staff 90 before, so it was high time for Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90 Review.

The Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90 is pretty much synonymous with Roger Federer. This was likely the racquet he used until 2013 when he switched to the Pro Staff RF97 Autograph . He used it under various paint jobs: nCode, the k-Factor, the BLX, and the Amplifeel. I have tried all the retail versions, but this is the first time I play with the Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90 and for me, this is the best one. Perhaps because it’s the closest one in feel to the legendary Wilson Pro Staff 85 .  So it was a lot of fun to do this Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90 Review.

The Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90 was the racquet/paint that Federer used when he won his first Wimbledon title in 2003 and I think he stayed with that mold. But let’s go through, briefly, how the different models of the Pro Staff Tour 90 played. I am also keen to hear which one was your favorite.

The Pro Staff Tour 90 – A legend in tennis racquets

The nCode was a bit more muted in feel and lighter to swing, the k-Factor was heavy and stiff but offered a good amount of power, the BLX was again a bit lighter and muted and the Amplifeel version that Federer won the 2012 Wimbledon title with was again rawer, but with a lower swing weight and the most user-friendly version.

I haven’t hit the Pro Staff 90 in a few years and I was keen to take this one on court. I bought it used and it was strung with a synthetic string that had likely been in the racquet for years. I had no time to restring it before my first session, but I actually preferred it with the synthetic gut over the multifilament/poly hybrid I installed after this session.

The Pro Staff Tour 90 has a razor-thin 17 mm beam, perimeter weighting system at 3 and 9, a braided graphite and kevlar construction for stiffness and stability. Mine was grip 2, so I added a half-size shrink sleeve to get the size up to 2.5. At first, I tried adding a full size to get it to three, but then the racquet came in at 367 grams and that is a bit much so I removed it and put on a half-size. I strung it up with Mayami Tour Hex 1.23 in the mains at 53 lbs or 24 kg and Tecnifibre Triax 1.38 in the crosses at 25 kg or 55 lbs.

I played nice, but I liked the pocketing and feel better with the synthetic gut and I would have preferred a full bed of Triax. This is not a knock the Mayami Tour Hex string, which is one of the best polys for my game right now with excellent tension maintenance.

My strung specs were: 360g, 31.4 cm balance, and 337 swing weight. Yes, not for the faint of heart. Below are the specs from prostocktennis.com

How does it play?

This racquet is a dream to hit with, but it won’t forgive your sloppy footwork or lazy preparation. If you bring your A-game, the racquet delivers in spades. It’s the best Tour 90 I’ve hit with and if you want the feel of the Pro Staff 85 in a slightly bigger head size, I think this is the one. So as long as you hit the sweet spot, you’re gold with this frame. It almost made me want to call Roger up and say: Why did you ever switch? But then I remembered I don’t have his number.

When you’re hitting your forehand well you can create really impressive angles with this frame. And it rewards you with great control, but some pop too. On my weaker backhand wing, I struggled a bit more to find the sweet spot. Despite Roger being a true tennis black belt, I could see why he would struggle against Rafa with this head size. Shanking is very likely when you get high balls on your weaker wing. But if you move around and protect your backhand, it provides surprising maneuverability.

I miss the mids. You can still play great tennis with them. Sometimes I would love it if they restricted head size to 90 sq inches to make tennis a bit more difficult for the pros. It would definitely create some entertainment in my mind. I have played the IG Prestige Mid and the Pro Staff Tour 90 side by side and they’re both great in different ways. The Prestige is more controlled, softer in feel, while the Tour 90 is more powerful and raw.

I could take this into a tournament just for the fun of it. It would look like a brilliant idea on a good day and a ridiculous idea on a bad day. It shines a mirror on your tennis game. If you’re Roger, you can win 16 slams, if you’re a happy tennis nerd, you can just appreciate the beauty of a real tool on the court.

Great review Jonas. I have all the Pro Staff 90 and I agree the 1st version is the best one. I’d probably rate PS90tour > K90 > BLXPS90 (2012) > N90 > BLX90. btw since Wilson just launch v13 RF97, any chance you can compare all the RF97 from v10 to v13?

Aren’t the “versions” of the Pro Staff 97 RF Autograph just updates in paint job?

Speaking of paint jobs, but semi off topic, what’s the deal with the reissued Six.One 95 in a shiny all black paint job (infinitely better than the white/red!). The so called ‘Pro Labs’ racquets were supposedly launched sept. 28 yet no tennis shop sells them yet. Furthermore on the Wilson US website the price is $249 and in Europe (DE/UK) wbsite the price is €290 !! What’s up with that Wilson?

I have had the pleasure to play for most of my tennis time. I have 3 of them. Not because I needed 3 in my bag but because I liked to keep one at my parents place to play when going home. Sadly my back is causing me too much trouble (I am only 35 :/ ) so I will say goodbye to two of them. How much would you value them ?

Used to play with the blx 90 and switched to the rf97. While serves and backhand has more pop, I really miss the fh angles that the 90 could produce. Is there a racket out there now that plays closest to the Wilson 90s but a touch more forgiving?

After watching your review I just bought a mint Hyper Pro Staff Tour 90 and I can say without questions, this is the most connected I’ve ever felt to a racket. The balance is perfect and it really doesn’t feel heavy. It is surgical at the net and you’re right, you can get some crazy angles even from the baseline. Definitely punishes you if you aren’t setting up early and tracking the ball well, but the feel and pocketing makes it worth it. Didn’t expect to love this frame this much, but so glad I purchased one.

Wilson Super Tour Pro Staff Backpack Review

The Pro Staff franchise presents its Super Tour backpack to add to the family of products that we’ve come to know and love from Wilson. The simplicity of the all-black design does not aim to stand out or catch your eye the way the Roger Federer DNA line might. Instead, the bag stands out with how practical and easy it is to carry from home to court. The bag can follow you to school or work before going to practice without requiring much storage space or raising the eyebrows that a 12-pack bag might do when it’s outside of the tennis sphere. 

The Wilson Super Tour Pro Staff Backpack is a nice compact product that has the room and compartments to store all your necessary equipment. The smooth black design will look fresh on your back without commanding attention.

Storage Capacity

The Pro Staff backpack has enough space to store the necessities on your way to and from the court, as well as being practical to carry around with you in your off-court life. The bag’s racket compartment has space for two rackets to fit comfortably, and the padded back means that you won’t be feeling the frame of the rackets while you have the bag secured on your back.

The main storage compartment features a padded panel perfect for a laptop or tablet if you have to go to school or work before practice. Also in the main storage compartment is a smaller back pocket great for fitting some of your personal essentials. The compartment has sufficient space for balls, a change of clothes, and a few other accessories. 

The front of the bag is a large ventilated pocket perfect for storing your shoes and/or your clothes post-match. Keeping this pocket separate from the main compartment allows the unpleasant odor of your tennis gear to avoid the rest of your belongings. The ventilation also helps your gear breathe and reduce any mold build-up should you forget to air out your bag after practice.

Lastly, the bag has two exterior side pockets adding storage for some of your smaller items. One of these pockets has a thermal lining, great for keeping a water bottle or snacks cool while your bag sits on the side court. The other side pocket is not thermally lined but is a good spot for your wallet, keys, phone, or other personal items. 

As with all Wilson products, we can expect this bag to be well made from quality material that is built to last. This bag features a polyester shell fabric with a polyurethane coating that will keep your equipment safe and secure while in transit.
