Wandering Bear Coffee Review: This Cold Brew Coffee On Tap Has Got Me Wired

Umama kibria.

In partnership with Wandering Bear.

My cold brew journey began during the pandemic, when every morning felt like a Saturday morning thanks to the luxury of time and many, many homemade batches. I love the full coffee experience: freshly roasted espresso, chilled overnight, iced – add a splash of creamy oat milk, 5 pumps of sweetener, and shake it right up.

However, I regularly spend $12+ on my coffee shop order and delivery now that my life has returned to its normal routine. I was looking for a way to cut down on this outrageous cost when my friend Kristen posted an Instagram story of the cold brew coffee she keeps on tap in her fridge. I responded right away: Me: WHAT IS THIS WIZARDRY? Kristen : Wandering Bear coffee on tap! I’M WIRED! Me: *Adds to Cart*

Battle of the Brew

Wandering Bear is an organic strong and smooth cold brew coffee on tap. Think boxed wine, but cold brew coffee. Like most great startups, Wandering Bear was born on a college campus. Co-founder Matthew Bachmann doesn’t describe himself as a morning person. That’s why a homemade caffeinated cold brew was the fuel for his existence. He walked into his Columbia grad school class to find fellow classmate Ben Gordon (his co-founder) with a homemade cold brew, too. It was love at first sip. Their relationship quickly turned into a battle of the best brew – who could make the strongest and smoothest batch.

Most of the cold brews on the market lacked freshness, were full of sugar and had shelf lives that killed the caffeinated energy they were seeking. In 2014, they launched their first coffee kitchen in Queens, New York. Wandering Bear was the first to revolutionize the bag-in-a-box cold brew coffee on tap. Now, Matt and Ben are bringing coffee shop quality cold brew at the push of a button to a fridge near you.

What’s This Cold Brew Craze About? ‍

As the first coffee on tap, Wandering Bear checks the box but for convenience – but how strong is it? Very. The coffee is made with 100% organic arabica coffee grown in Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Get a punch of extra caffeine with 2 espresso shots in every 6 oz serving (that’s 150mg of caffeine). The brand locks in all that flavor with its thoughtful boxed packaging that keeps it fresher longer. It stays fresh for up to 30 days without diminishing the flavor or strength.

Wandering Bear is known for being big on taste, but small on environmental impact. That’s why each case is 100% recyclable (even the tap cap is made of sugarcane!). But that’s the only sugar you’ll find near this cold brew. Wandering Bear has zero sugar or artificial sweeteners.

The brand has a variety of offerings: cold brew boxes (from $26.09), pods (from $11.67), beans (from $15.99), cartons (from $8.99), and single serves (from $47.99) in flavors like straight black, vanilla, caramel, mocha, hazelnut, and decaf black.

An Honest Review ‍

I got the Straight Black and Vanilla cold brew coffee boxes. The Straight Black is hands down my favorite. While I typically drink my coffee milky and sweet, this classic black goes down smooth. It starts off strong and finishes with a chocolatey undertone (and no bitter acidic aftertaste).

Vanilla is typically my least favorite flavor because most vanilla cold brews overpower the coffee with artificial sweetness. I was pleasantly surprised at how light this vanilla flavor is. Just enough to get a whiff of the smell plus a mild and natural vanilla sweetness.

Taste: 9/10

The caffeine hit me almost instantly. But not the kind that makes you run to the bathroom (IYKYK). You feel it in your heart and mind. It’s strong, yet smooth. The box reads that each 6 oz cup serves up 2 espresso shots. I’d say you maybe feel 1-1.5 shots if you’re a 2 cups a day caffeine-aholic like me. It’s a great sip on it all day, steady-state energy flow, kind of cold brew. I’m also amazed at how long it stays fresh. I went on vacation for a week and came back to coffee just as strong as Day 1.

Caffeine: 8.99/10 The best part of Wandering Bear is its convenience: I roll out of bed and go straight to the fridge for a quick morning pour. This cold brew delivers that coffee shop quality with the push of a button. I love how sleek the box fits into my fridge, too.

Convenience: 10/10 ‍

‍ Goodbye Coffee Shop Coffee!

5 More Reasons To Love Wandering Bear:

As a busy mom of two and also training for a marathon , I’ve often wished for a convenient solution that doesn’t compromise on the fresh, robust taste of a coffee-shop brew. The dilemma of time versus quality can feel like choosing between a peaceful morning run or a tantrum-free school drop-off.

Enter Wandering Bear Iced Coffee .

I have been seeing ads all over my Facebook feed for this coffee and recently decided to order some to see if it lives up to the hype.

In this blog post, I’ll share with you my experience and if the coffee is worth ordering.

About Wandering Bear Coffee

My experience and review, packaging and design, price and value, pros and cons, the verdict, frequently asked questions.

If you’re looking for a delicious and convenient coffee option, Wandering Bear Coffee might be just what you need.

This New York-based company offers a range of high-quality coffee products that are perfect for busy coffee lovers.

Company History

Wandering Bear Coffee was founded in 2014 by two friends, Matt Bachmann and Ben Gordon. The company started as a cold brew coffee stand at a farmers’ market in New York City and quickly gained a following for its delicious and smooth coffee.

In 2016, Wandering Bear Coffee launched its first product line, which included cold brew coffee in a box. The company’s products are now available in retailers across the United States (mainly on the East and West Coasts) as well as on Amazon and their own website .

As any busy parent can relate, I’m always on the hunt for shortcuts to simplify my day without compromising on quality.

Whether it’s a new workout routine on the Peloton or a family-friendly meal prepping hack, I’m all in.

So, when I kept seeing ads on Facebook for Wandering Bear Iced Coffee , specifically their tantalizing Coconut flavor, it felt like the universe was sending me a sign. I love coconut iced coffee, so I knew I had to try it!

The promise of a convenient, coffee-shop quality brew right from my fridge was too good to pass up.

Ordering (or Attempting To)

With high hopes and a serious need for caffeine, I ventured onto their website, ready to place my order. But unfortunately, the Coconut flavor was nowhere to be found on the site. The dream of tropical coffee bliss was starting to seem more like a mirage.

After reaching out to customer service, they informed me that their seasonal flavors tend to sell out quickly – a testament to their popularity, but a disappointment for latecomers like myself, especially since they were running an ad campaign.

But I wasn’t ready to abandon ship just yet.

I decided to go with their Black Iced Coffee, hoping it could at least fill the void left by the elusive Coconut flavor. And oh boy, did it deliver!

Tasting the Coffee

Upon tasting it, the richness and depth of flavor were instantly noticeable. The smoothness was reminiscent of the cold brew from my favorite coffee shop, and it was certainly stronger than the coffee I whip up with my Nespresso.

This wasn’t just some off-the-shelf iced coffee; this was a high-quality brew that could hold its own.

Aside from the remarkable taste, the convenience of having this box in my fridge cannot be overstated. With a whopping 16 cups in each box, I found myself set for a good while.

And the price tag?

At $28.99 per box, each 16 oz pour works out to be just $1.81 – way cheaper than a trip to the coffee shop where I’m paying over $4 for a cup of cold brew.

So, despite the initial setback with the Coconut flavor, Wandering Bear’s Black Iced Coffee has proven to be a worthy addition to my fridge , promising a quick, delicious start to my busy mornings.

Now, as a coffee lover, you and I both know that great taste is only part of the equation. We also care about the packaging, convenience, and, crucially, the freshness of our beloved brew.

In these aspects, Wandering Bear doesn’t just wander – it strides confidently.

The packaging design of Wandering Bear Iced Coffee screams modern, clean, and functional. The box itself has a minimalist vibe with a cheeky bear logo, clearly reflecting the brand’s laid-back yet bold personality. It’s also pretty compact, so it doesn’t take up too much precious space in the fridge.

opening wandering bear tap

It’s a fun addition to the fridge and a great conversation starter when friends drop by for a visit.

But the real show-stopper is the in-built tap. It’s a game-changer for those of us accustomed to fumbling with jars and containers in the early morning hours.

Just place the box in your fridge, and the tap is ready to dispense your fresh iced coffee whenever you need it.

No fuss, no mess, just a steady stream of chilled, aromatic coffee at your fingertips.

Even better, the tap system ensures your coffee stays fresh for 30 days . That’s right, a whole month of delicious coffee-shop quality cold brew right in your own home.

It’s a testament to the brand’s commitment to delivering quality and convenience hand in hand.

However, if you’re thinking, “A whole box is too much for me,” Wandering Bear has got you covered. They also offer single-serve options that provide the same quality brew in a smaller, equally convenient package.

It’s evident that Wandering Bear caters to all kinds of coffee drinkers, ensuring we all get to enjoy their exceptional coffee, regardless of our consumption habits.

outside of wandering bear box

All in all, Wandering Bear has thoughtfully designed its packaging to be as consumer-friendly as possible, making it easier than ever to enjoy a fresh, high-quality iced coffee at home, anytime you want.

  • EXTRA STRONG: Our cold brew has 150 mg of caffeine per 6 oz. serving. That’s two espresso shots right there. And you get about 16 glasses of cold brew in the 96oz box.
  • SHELF-STABLE: Our cold brew can be kept at room temperatures until after you open it. This means you can buy in bulk and store it.

Wandering Bear Coffee

When it comes to the cost of Wandering Bear Iced Coffee, I’ll admit, the initial price tag might make you do a double take. But, when you consider the quality, convenience, and pure deliciousness of this coffee, the numbers begin to make sense.

Let’s start with the basics: you can choose to buy individual boxes or opt for a bundle, where buying more saves you more. It’s a neat option for the caffeine-obsessed among us, or if you’re thinking of splitting the cost with a friend or two.

And let’s not forget about the membership option. For a small annual fee, you’re granted early access to sales and those enticing limited edition flavors.

Imagine having first dibs on the holiday Peppermint Mocha or the tantalizing Coconut before everyone else!

As for the smaller quantities, they offer compact cartons and single serves, perfect for the occasional iced coffee drinker or if you’re looking to add some variety to your caffeine routine.

And here’s where it really pays off: their subscribe and save option. You can arrange for monthly deliveries of your favorite brew and save 10% while doing so.

The cherry on top?

You don’t have to fret about storage. Unopened coffee can be kept at room temperature until you’re ready to indulge.

While Wandering Bear Iced Coffee may seem pricier than your average off-the-shelf iced coffee, the value you’re getting in return is substantial. This is a high-end, coffee shop quality brew, conveniently boxed and ready to pour whenever you need that caffeine fix.

Factor in the taste, convenience, and the variety of options available, and you’ve got yourself a pretty sweet deal.

Currently Wandering Bear has the following flavors available:

Straight Black

Dirty Vanilla Chai

Peppermint Mocha (seasonal)

Pumpkin Spice (seasonal)

Almond Armaretto (seasonal)

Toasted Coconut (seasonal)

They’re always adding new seasonal flavors to the rotation so keep an eye on their website.

Let’s boil down my Wandering Bear Iced Coffee experience into a list of pros and cons to help you decide whether it’s right for you:

Here are a few pros of Wandering Bear coffee:

The coffee itself is top-notch. It’s smooth, strong, and delivers a flavorful punch that rivals a coffee shop cold brew.

Convenience

The fridge-ready box with a built-in tap means you have fresh iced coffee on demand, whenever you need it.

It’s fun and modern, adding a little whimsy to your refrigerator landscape. Plus it doesn’t take up too much space!

The tap system ensures your coffee stays fresh for up to 30 days once opened.

Serving Size Options

From a hefty 96 oz box to 32 oz cartons and 12 oz single serves, they cater to a variety of needs.

Despite the higher initial cost, the per-serving price rivals that of many premium coffees.

Membership Benefits

Early access to sales, secret menu items, and limited edition flavors.

The coffee doesn’t need to be refrigerated until it’s ready to use, saving you valuable fridge space.

While there are a lot of pros, let’s take a look at a few of the cons of Wandering Bear Coffee.

Seasonal Flavors Availability

Their limited edition flavors sell out quickly. This might be disappointing if you’re eager to try a specific flavor, though membership can alleviate this problem.

For some, the initial price might seem high, although the overall value considering quality, convenience, and per-serving cost is excellent.

Website Navigation

While this didn’t affect my overall experience, the initial difficulty finding the desired flavor on their site is worth mentioning, especially since they’re advertising it.

Overall, I found the pros significantly outweigh the cons.

Wandering Bear Iced Coffee is a quality product that offers an excellent balance of convenience, taste, and value, especially for those of us who crave a good cup of iced coffee to kick-start our busy days.

wandering bear coffee nutrition

To wrap it all up, my experience with Wandering Bear Iced Coffee has been overwhelmingly positive.

Despite some initial hiccups in the ordering process and a higher-than-average price tag, the taste, quality, and convenience offered by Wandering Bear make it a clear winner in my book.

The fun, eco-friendly packaging and the ease of having a fresh, delicious iced coffee on tap right from my fridge far outweigh the cons.

And let’s not forget about the excellent value you get in the long run, not just in terms of cost per serving but also the time and energy saved from brewing or making that daily coffee shop run.

Plus, with the additional benefits of the membership, Wandering Bear makes it easy for all coffee enthusiasts to enjoy premium, coffee-shop quality cold brew from the comfort of their own homes.

So if you’re in the market for a convenient, high-quality iced coffee solution, I recommend giving Wandering Bear a try.

Wandering Bear Coffee Review

Wandering Bear Coffee

When you think about coffee, does your mind jump to the familiar aroma of freshly brewed beans and the comforting warmth of your favorite mug? If so, you're just like us! But if you’re looking to mix things up and add a twist to your everyday caffeine routine, Wandering Bear Coffee has you covered.

It's an innovative brand that has redefined the world of coffee thanks to its bold, smooth, and rich cold brew. Easy to enjoy either on its own or when paired with milk and sweetener, Wandering Bear Coffee has a lot to offer, and we're here to explore what this brand is all about!

What is Wandering Bear Coffee?

Wandering Bear Coffee is a top-of-the-line coffee brand that has revolutionized the way we consume and appreciate our daily cups of Joe. The brand’s history began when two graduate students named Matt and Ben found themselves relying heavily on caffeine to get through the demanding nature of their studies.

However, their passion for coffee went beyond consuming it — they were eventually determined to create the best cold brew of all time. Their obsession with perfecting the flavors and aromas of cold brew led to countless hours of experimenting and refining their brewing process, ultimately giving birth to Wandering Bear Coffee in 2014.

Wandering Bear Coffee is known for its bold, smooth, and delicious taste. The secret to this exceptional cold brew lies in the meticulous brewing process, which involves steeping high-quality, organic coffee beans in cold water for hours. This results in a balanced, rich, and full-bodied flavor with a hint of natural sweetness.

It’s also worth mentioning that the company sources its high-quality organic beans from Peru, Mexico, and Nicaragua, which ensures a consistently delicious taste in every cup. Also, in addition to its signature cold brew, Wandering Bear also offers a variety of flavors that can be enjoyed as you please.

For instance, the brand recently introduced its Dirty Vanilla Chai coffee, which is made from Fair-Trade beans infused with vanilla and spices like cinnamon and cloves. It’s a delicious blend that offers the same rich flavor and balanced sweetness as Wandering Bear’s other brews, just with an entirely new and unique taste profile.

Sustainability is at the heart of Wandering Bear Coffee’s mission, ensuring that their love for coffee doesn’t come at the expense of the environment. The brand sources its beans from organic, Fair-Trade-certified farms, and its packaging is designed to minimize waste while reducing the company's carbon footprint. Also, the brand’s innovative bag-in-box packaging for its cold brew not only keeps the coffee fresh for longer but this packaging also uses less material than traditional packaging methods.

Wandering Bear Coffee is not only dedicated to providing exceptional coffee but it also educates and engages with its customers. The brand’s blog is a testament to this commitment, covering a wide range of topics, like cold brew and gluten-free diets or why you should take coffee breaks every now and again.

The Wandering Bear Coffee website also features a dedicated recipe section that showcases creative and delicious ways to enjoy the brand's coffee products. This can serve as a treasure trove for coffee lovers who are looking to elevate their coffee experience by incorporating Wandering Bear Coffee into various beverages, desserts, and even savory dishes.

Wandering Bear Coffee has successfully garnered a significant following on Instagram with over 85,500 followers  as well . This impressive number is a testament to the brand’s ability to create visually appealing, engaging, and relevant content that resonates with coffee enthusiasts and casual browsers alike.

Wandering Bear Coffee Reviews from Customers

After reading through Wandering Bear Coffee’s official website, Amazon store, and Instagram profile, we were quite impressed with the overwhelmingly positive feedback and rave reviews from satisfied customers. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what people have to say about their experiences with Wandering Bear Coffee products!

Customers consistently praise Wandering Bear Coffee for its bold, smooth, and rich flavor profile. Many have mentioned that it’s the best cold brew they’ve ever tasted, with some even claiming that it has converted them into cold brew lovers.

One customer shared their experience with Wandering Bear Coffee as an on-the-go coffee option they take with them while traveling. They mentioned that, at home, they rely on an  espresso machine for their daily coffee fix. However, when they travel, they often end up spending a significant amount of money on high-end coffee shops and chains.

So, as an alternative, they decided to give Wandering Bear Coffee a try before their trip, and they were pleasantly surprised! The coffee was easy to take with them in the car, and after refrigerating it overnight, they woke up to a deliciously satisfying cold brew the next morning.

Another first-time customer expressed their delight with Wandering Bear Coffee’s vanilla-flavored cold brew. They appreciated that the vanilla taste was subtle instead of overly sweet, allowing the quality of the coffee base to shine through. Overall, they were happy with their purchase and enjoyed the well-balanced flavor of the cold brew.

The quality of the coffee is also highly regarded, with users appreciating the organic and Fair-Trade sourcing of the beans.  Also, a customer shared that their initial reason for purchasing Wandering Bear Coffee was to find a bulk cold brew option to mix into their pre-workout protein shakes. Upon receiving the product, they were impressed by the clever packaging, particularly the spout and box design.

But before they started mixing it into their shakes, they decided to taste the cold brew on its own. To their surprise, the coffee exceeded their expectations, and they found it to be incredibly delicious. The customer noted that the cold brew had a refined acidity, nutty undertones, and an excellent finish without any bitterness. They compared the quality to the kind of cold brew they’d typically only find in specialty coffee shops that use intricate brewing equipment.

Wandering Bear Coffee’s unique packaging — particularly the boxed cold brew with a spout — has also been a hit among customers. They love the convenience of having a ready-to-drink cold brew on tap in their fridge, making it easy to enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee during the day, no matter how busy you are. Plus, the packaging also maintains the freshness and flavor of the coffee, which customers appreciate.

Additionally, Wandering Bear Coffee’s subscription service has been well-received by customers who collectively seem to love the convenience of having their favorite cold brew delivered to their doorstep. One customer who enjoys sharing their coffee with friends was able to do so without worrying about running out.

The exceptional customer service provided by the Wandering Bear Coffee team has not gone unnoticed. Customers have shared positive experiences with the company’s responsiveness, helpfulness, and willingness to go above and beyond in order to ensure the satisfaction of its customers. This level of care has undoubtedly contributed to the brand’s loyal fanbase.

Watch: Black bear gets up close and personal at Gatlinburg theme park concession stand

wandering bear.com

Guests and employees of an East Tennessee theme park received a startling encounter from an unexpected visitor last week.

According to a press release from Anakeesta Mountaintop Adventure Park  in Gatlinburg, a black bear entered the “Bear Can" concession stand at the park around 9:30 p.m. Thursday through the employee entrance.

In a viral Tik-Tok video , the bear is seen behind the counter, rustling through food and then briefly encountering an employee. The bear proceeds to lunge at the employee, making brief physical contact before running off. The startled, but seriously uninjured employee quickly rushed inside and shut the door.

According to the press release, the employee decided not to receive medical attention and the park's operations were not affected by the incident.

Located within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, black bear sightings are a common occurrence as the bears are native to the area and are highly populated. The park said it works alongside the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to create a safe space to co-exist with the native wildlife and encourage guests to enjoy bear sightings at a safe distance.

“Bears are a big part of the magic in the Great Smoky Mountains,” said Communications Manager, Austin Martin in a press release. “The Anakeesta team works diligently to create a safe space to co-exist with the native wildlife.”

TWRA plans on euthanizing bear if caught

According to TWRA, the bear will be killed if caught.

A trap has been set and if a bear that fits the physical description of the bear in the video is caught, it will be euthanized, said TWRA Communications Coordinator Matthew Cameron in an email to Knox News.

The TWRA does not indiscriminately euthanize bears, however the bear entered a concessions stand with humans present, made contact with an employee causing minor injuries to the employee's arm. Cameron said that when these situations occur, many people choose to blame the wildlife agency in charge of killing the bear and not the actions of others.

"TWRA did not feed this bear, allow it to have access to unnatural foods, or leave unsecured garbage for it," said Cameron. "The actions of irresponsible people are what will kill this bear but TWRA will have to perform the physical act."

"It is upsetting, frustrating, and heartbreaking for our biologists and officers to have to do this," he added. "We did not pursue a career in natural resources management to kill wildlife."

The TWRA will not be using DNA confirmation, as there is no DNA evidence available in the case. DNA evidence is used to confirm or deny that the correct bear was euthanized. According to the TWRA, DNA takes several days to process and it is inhumane to hold a wild animal in a trap for that timeframe.

How to stay safe during an encounter with a bear

According to the National Park Service , bears in national parks are wild and can be dangerous. Their behavior is unpredictable and although rare, attacks can cause serious injuries and even death. When face-to-face with a bear, there is no single strategy which can guarantee safety as each bear and experience is unique. However, there are basic guidelines which can minimize the threat.

The National Parks Service recommends the following:

  • Identify yourself by talking calmly so the bear knows you are a human and not a prey animal.
  • Remain still; stand your ground but slowly wave your arms.
  • Stay calm speak in low tones and don't imitate bear sounds or make high pitched noises.
  • Pick up small children immediately. Do not run, make sudden movements or attempt to climb a tree.
  • Hike and travel in groups. Groups are intimidating to bears because of their size.
  • Make yourselves look as large as possible. For example, move to higher ground.
  • Do not allow the bear access to your food and do not drop your pack.
  • If the bear is stationary, move away slowly and sideways which will allow you to keep an eye on the bear and avoid tripping.
  • Be especially cautious of females with cubs. Never place yourself between a mother and her cub, and never attempt to approach them. The chances of an attack escalate greatly if she perceives you as a danger to her cubs.
  • Leave the area or take a detour. If this is impossible, wait until the bear moves away. Always leave the bear an escape route.

Video captures shocking moment when worker comes face-to-face with black bear at Tennessee park

wandering bear.com

Update: The bear was euthanized , the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) said Monday.

A concessions stand at an amusement park in Tennessee, coincidentally named "Bear Can," had an unlikely customer over the weekend.

Around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, a black bear entered "Bear Can" at Anakeesta , a mountaintop adventure park in Gatlinburg, through the employee entrance, which is off limits to visitors, the park said in a news release.

The bear started exiting the stand just as a park worker was entering it, giving the worker and the animal quite a surprise as they turned the corner.

"At that point, the bear and employee made brief physical contact," the park said, adding that the employee was not seriously injured in the encounter and opted not to receive medical attention. Anakeesta's park operations were also not impacted by the incident, the park said.

Video footage, recorded by a person present inside the concession stand, shows the bear scouring for food while holding some in his paw.

"Oh, look he's drooling," a person can be heard saying in the video. "He's all about this gumbo."

After looking around and dropping some items, the bear exited the stand and ran into an employee who was entering. The animal jumped at the female employee, pawing her, before scampering away while the employee ran into the stand, shutting the door behind her.

'Bears are a big part of the magic,' says park spokesperson

Surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on three sides, Anakeesta is no stranger to bears given their high population in the area. However, encounters such as these are rare, and the park works closely with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and other local agencies to ensure such interactions are limited.

“Bears are a big part of the magic in the Great Smoky Mountains,” a spokesperson for the park Austin Martin said in a statement. “The Anakeesta team works diligently to create a safe space to co-exist with the native wildlife.”

The park, in its news release, added that Anakeesta is "dedicated to giving people a unique outdoor adventure in the Smokies" and encourages "guests to enjoy the views of the bears, at a safe distance."

Anakeesta is located about 42 miles east of Knoxville and is approximately 220 miles from Nashville.

Bear may be euthanized

A spokesperson with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, meanwhile, told USA TODAY that the bear may have to be euthanized based on the agency's "Bear Nuisance Matrix," which serves as a guide for dealing with human/bear conflict. The spokesperson added that TWRA does not indiscriminately euthanize bears, but because the bear entered a concession stand with humans present and injured an employee, the best course of action would be to euthanize it to avoid further conflicts.

TWRA has already laid out a trap for the bear, the spokesperson said. While the agency sometimes relies on DNA evidence to ensure it has the right animal, in this case no DNA evidence is available.

The spokesperson also urged the public to exercise responsibility in areas with high concentration of wildlife by making sure leftover food is properly disposed, and all garbage is secured so that animals, like the bear, do not have access to unnatural food sources and are not attracted to areas frequented by humans.

Bear euthanized after injuring worker at park concession stand in Tennessee

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: June 25, 2024 / 3:52 PM EDT / CBS News

Wildlife officials in Tennessee euthanized a bear matching the description of a bear that wandered into a concession stand and helped itself to food before charging at an employee, authorities said.

The bear was caught on camera inside the concession stand — fittingly named Bear Can — on Thursday night at Anakeesta, an outdoor adventure park in eastern Tennessee, officials said in a news release. The bear stood on its hind legs for a few seconds while looking at customers and eating food, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

The bear appeared to be on its way out of the stand when it encountered a worker, startling them both and resulting in "brief physical contact" with a park employee, the agency said. The worker suffered minor, superficial injuries to her arm and back.

Afterward, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency caught several bears. One bear "fitting the description of the bear involved in the concession stand incident" was euthanized after being caught, the agency said. Two others — a female with four cubs and a larger male bear — were caught and then released.

"TWRA does not enjoy having to euthanize any wildlife, especially bears, and we don't do it indiscriminately," Dan Gibbs, a state black bear coordinator, said.

The agency uses a Bear Conflict Matrix to determine if euthanization is appropriate, Gibbs said, adding that this bear was not a candidate for relocation because it had entered a stand with people present and made physical contact with a worker.

Officials with the wildlife agency and the park met on Monday to discuss temporary garbage storage and food access issues inside the park. After the incident with the bear, Anakeesta bought temporary electric fencing and electrified "unwelcome mats" for use when the park is closed to guests, state officials said. The park also ordered steel caging to secure concession stand doors.

There is a large population of black bears in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which surrounds Anakeesta on three sides. "Bears are a big part of the magic in the Great Smoky Mountains," said Austin Martin, Anakeesta communications manager. "The Anakeesta team works diligently to create a safe space to co-exist with the native wildlife."

Tennessee is home to approximately 5,000 to 6,000 bears.

WHAT IS COLD BREW COFFEE?

Cold brew is a type of iced coffee made by steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period of time (between 12-24 hours). Traditional iced coffee is made by brewing hot coffee and then pouring it over ice. The cold brew process eliminates heat and brings out the big, bold flavors of coffee while leaving behind some of the acids and oils that make traditional iced coffee taste so bitter. Our cold brew has everything you love about coffee -- rich chocolate and dark fruit notes, full body, and a surprisingly smooth finish -- without the things you don't, like bitterness or acidity. Cold brew coffee is the best iced coffee.

‘Chronicles of a Wandering Saint’ Review: Are the Meek Blessed?

It’s clear that Rita’s life in rural Argentina could use a bit of magic. But her willingness to bend the truth to achieve it heralds disaster.

  • Share full article

In a blue room, a man wearing a halo is photographing a woman sitting in a teal-colored wooden chair.

By Beatrice Loayza

“How do I know if something is a miracle?” This is the question that Rita (Mónica Villa), a 60-something Catholic woman living in rural Argentina, poses to a search engine — though deep down, she already knows the answer. A statue that Rita found while tending to her duties as the local chapel keeper isn’t the long-lost figure of St. Rita. But it’d be a miracle if it were, and miracles mean glory, attention and prestige in her small town.

Rita’s simple life — scrubbing pews, tolerating the pretenses of other church volunteers, coming home to her spacey but loyal husband, Norberto (Horacio Marassi) — could use a bit of magic. Yet this desire, and her willingness to bend the truth to achieve it, herald disaster.

Directed by Tomás Gómez Bustillo, “Chronicles of a Wandering Saint” begins as a slow-moving scammer comedy. Halfway through, the film receives a jolt, and Rita’s drab surroundings take on an enchanted quality that places the film within the robust tradition of Latin American magical realism.

The visually elegant film can also be overly precious and whimsical, though that might be a virtue by some measures. In this regard it shares DNA with the laconic comedies of Aki Kaurismaki. The superior second half, in which Rita’s reality is upended, eases into a realm of fantasy that is admirable — and more effective — because of its uncanny, inventive minimalism.

That miracles happen under the most banal circumstances is a bit of a cliché, but the film tackles this conceit with the kind of originality and intelligence that makes you forget there’s a blueprint in the first place.

Chronicles of a Wandering Saint Not rated. In Spanish, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 24 minutes. In theaters.

Opinion Federal workers are going back to the office — any year now

Despite the Biden administration’s promise, progress is glacial and opposition is strong.

wandering bear.com

Last August, 3½ years after the pandemic sent millions of government workers home, President Biden’s chief of staff, Jeff Zients, told federal agencies to “aggressively execute” a pivot back to in-person work.

This January, Zients emailed Cabinet members: Agencies “are not where they need to be. ... I ask that you double down on your leadership to increase in-person work.”

This April, in a speech to the Economic Club in Washington, Zients said, “We don’t yet have the return-to-work levels that we should have across the federal government.”

This summer marks 4½ years since covid-19 altered the meaning and location of work for many Americans. Most people are back at their place of employment, most of the time. But government workers remain largely at home, so much so that 17 out of 24 federal agencies were using only about one-quarter of their headquarters’ office space last summer, a Government Accountability Office report found.

The president has urged workers to put on shoes and get back downtown, but it’s not working. Taxpayers shell out about $5 billion a year to lease offices for federal employees, plus another $2 billion to operate those buildings and the more than 500 million square feet of office space that Uncle Sam owns.

I thought at least one political party would have latched on to this as a pretty outrageous state of affairs. The campaign ads about massive waste write themselves, as anyone can see by wandering along K Street NW or in Federal Triangle, past shuttered storefronts along empty sidewalks, especially on Mondays and Fridays ... and Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wednesdays aren’t great, either.

Inside the offices, some very high-quality air-conditioning pumps into sparsely populated rooms: Just under half of all workers — public and private sectors combined — now show up to their D.C. offices, down somewhat from before the pandemic, according to card-swipe tallies by Kastle Systems.

The numbers for public employees alone are devastating: Only 6 percent of federal workers are working full-time in their offices; 30 percent are fully remote, according to a Federal News Network survey this spring. Some agencies are using less than 10 percent of their space.

That’s fine with most workers. An Office of Personnel Management report found that 84 percent of employees and managers believe staying home improves the quality of their work.

“People are coming back to the office more days, but to say the least, it’s not very practical or popular,” said Jacqueline Simon, policy director for the American Federation of Government Employees, the union that represents about 750,000 federal and D.C. workers. “They worked heroically throughout the pandemic. The idea that they have to go into the office to please Jeff Zients is absurd.”

Outrage about the workers’ absence extends beyond Zients and seems to be at least somewhat bipartisan. If agencies won’t require workers to come back, maybe the law can make them return. Enter Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Joe Manchin III (I-W.Va.), whose Back to Work Act would require feds to be in-person at least 60 percent of the time.

It’s not just conservative lawmakers who are appalled by the wasted tax dollars. Democratic mayors have watched in horror as tax bases crumbled and downtowns emptied out. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker (D) last month ordered all city workers back to their pre-pandemic schedules, effective in July.

In D.C., Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) has called on the White House to take “decisive action” to get federal workers back to the office or “realign their vast property holdings for use by the local government,” nonprofits, businesses or anyone willing to repurpose the space.

Zients says working in-person is vital to “build a strong culture,” boost productivity and train new employees.

Simon agrees that “there are benefits to being in-person,” describing how face-to-face training of a young new co-worker makes a difference. But she draws the line at making workers bear the burden of boosting the tax base. Government workers “don’t have an obligation to support restaurants downtown,” she said.

Biden promised in his 2022 State of the Union address that “the vast majority of federal workers will once again work in person.” Movement toward that goal remains glacial. Changes must be negotiated with unions. Agencies have proposed boosting in-person attendance to anywhere from two days a week to four days a week, but some have cut their proposed minimums in response to union objections.

Management mostly agrees with the rank and file, Simon said: “They’re almost apologetic at the bargaining table.”

The impetus to stay home is powerful. After four years of working steps from the fridge, the work pants don’t fit anymore. An hour on the Metro to get home is far less attractive than a commute from couch to kitchen. And it’s massively frustrating to show up and find the office mostly empty, negating any inspirational upside of being with other people.

But ideas blossom and serendipitous moments produce creative work when people share common space. Workers at the Labor Department’s Boston office know that in their guts. That’s why when they protested this spring against plans to force them back to the office, they didn’t do it on Zoom. They went back to the office.

Bear killed after wandering into concession stand and charging at worker, officials say

A bear that walked into a concession stand and charged at a “surprised” worker has now been euthanized, Tennessee wildlife officials said.

The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. on June 20 at Anakeesta Mountaintop Adventure Park, which borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

The employee working the stand briefly left the booth and propped the back door open, a video shows, likely allowing the bear to wander in.

The video recorded by a patron at the window shows the bear eating the food and turning to leave, right as the employee walks back in.

The worker turns and runs away, but the bear chases after her and appears to briefly leap up on her. The bear then flees as she hurries back to the booth and shuts the door.

Wildlife officials said the worker sustained “superficial injuries,” but they began the process of trapping the bear to prevent further incidents.

“Unfortunately, this bear was not a candidate for relocation,” TWRA black bear coordinator Dan Gibbs said in a news release.

While attempting to catch the animal from the incident, wildlife officers said they caught other bears, including a mother bear with four cubs, until they eventually caught one that matched the description of that bear and euthanized it.

“TWRA does not enjoy having to euthanize any wildlife, especially bears and we don’t do it indiscriminately,” Gibbs said. “We utilize what we call the ‘Bear Conflict Matrix,’ which was developed by wildlife professionals as a guide for addressing human/bear conflict. In this incident, the bear entered a concession stand with humans present and made physical contact with an employee causing minor injuries.”

The park is working with the state agency to take preventive measures as well. It bought temporary electric fences, electrified mats for after-hours and caging for the concession stand doors, officials said.

“Anakeesta is continuously working to improve the safety and security of our park, including limiting bear interactions,” the park’s communications manager Austin Martin said. “We are dedicated to keeping our native wildlife protected in their natural habitat.”

Anakeesta Mountaintop Adventure Park is in Gatlinburg, about a 35-mile drive southeast from Knoxville.

Jeremy Allen White in season two of 'The Bear'

To pea or not to pea.

'the bear' star lionel boyce on marcus' eulogy scene, season 3 cliffhanger, and whether anyone on the show is ok, 'the bear' returns, kevin costner premieres 'horizon' and this week's best events.

It’s possible that Carmy has always been Hamlet, the prodigal son returned from studies abroad to a death-rocked kingdom he doesn’t recognize anymore, a fatherless figure in search of mentorship and yet failing as a mentor himself.

After two seasons that pushed the narrative forward at an astonishing rate — sandwich shops very rarely become fine-dining establishments in such short order — the third season of The Bear finds Carmy in a true morass. He escapes the prison of his restaurant’s freezer to turn the entire establishment into a prison of nebulous rules and unmeetable aspirations. He’s stuck, but doesn’t realize he’s stuck because he’s turned a professed desire not to repeat himself into its own sort of repetition.

The Bear has, in this season, become a series filled with characters out of Hamlet. Sydney ( Ayo Edebiri ), who might seem like Ophelia if you’re fueled by the truly bizarre desire to forge a romance between Carmy and Sydney, is unable to make herself sign a partnership agreement that would give her what she once dreamt of. Richie ( Ebon Moss-Bachrach ), who might have found purpose last season thanks to a week staging at high-end restaurant Ever, seems like he could be Laertes, on the verge of leading a front-of-the-house revolt. But he can’t even make himself RSVP to his ex-wife’s wedding.

On an episode-by-episode basis, the third season of The Bear is as good as anything the show has ever done. Possibly better?

The season stars with the deceptively titled “Tomorrow,” directed by series creator Christopher Storer . Think of it as a deconstructed “Previously On” montage, stretched from three minutes to 36, or almost as an elevated clip show, looking backward as much as forward. It’s an expressive tone poem that chronicles Carmy’s journey , both the moments that filled him with wonder and the moments (courtesy of guest star Joel McHale) that irreparably damaged his psyche.

Speaking of this as a season of birth, the premiere is almost natal in its treatment of the culinary canal through which Carmy has emerged. With very little dialogue and no storyline to speak of, disconnected and beautifully shot memories — practically every guest star the show has ever had makes a return engagement — are fused by Joanna Naugle’s editing and a miraculous ambient and amniotic score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (the 2025 Emmy races in several categories feel like they’re already over).

It’s one of those episodes where, by the time you fully realize and internalize what it’s doing, it’s finished and you’re thrust into the true season of the show with the equally impressive “Next,” an abrupt transition from the elegiac to more trademark chaos.

Indecision can be exciting and I found the risks The Bear takes in these 10 episodes to be thrilling. But if you’re hoping to see things progress at an adrenalized rate, this is a season in limbo that reflects its main characters and their respective holding patterns.

It all builds to a finale that’s impossibly joyful and impossibly miserable, perhaps as pure an evocation of the rollercoaster of depression as I’ve ever seen on television. The restaurant is part of Carmy’s family legacy — “legacy” is one of many running themes this season — but depression is as well and if the big question of this season isn’t “So… Now what?” it’s “What do you do when you get the thing you want and the thing you want doesn’t make you happy?”

What does it mean for viewers, when the show appears to have reached a point its characters wanted to reach and decides not to make audiences happy?

If Carmy and Sydney and Richie aren’t finding gratification, why should you? If Carmy is paralyzed by his inability to reconcile the things Claire (Molly Gordon) overheard him say in the finale, why should the show rush? If the delay in a review from the Chicago Tribune is tormenting Carmy, why should the show rush that review to the screen? If Nat is tied in knots by an ongoing pregnancy she worries will never end and will end too soon, why should the show rush that childbirth?

Hamlet at least had the decency to end with nearly everybody dead, as closed as closure gets. This, then, is less Hamlet than an Empire Strikes Back situation, where the point we reach in the finale won’t satisfy anybody, in musical theory terms a calculated denial of what is called “the tonic.”

But, again, it’s very easy to be satisfied on an episode-by-episode basis. “Next” is as funny and manic an episode as the show has ever done, another celebration of the series’ peerless use of editing to capture that razor’s edge between hilarity and tension.

Longtime series first assistant director Duccio Fabbri makes a confident directing debut on “Doors,” which somehow ratchets the chaos to new highs, while Edebiri makes her own effortlessly exceptional debut behind the camera on “Napkins,” which single-handedly makes up for how underused I felt the tremendous Liza Colón-Zayas was in the second season. “Ice Chips” is an intimate counterpoint to last season’s “Fishes,” booking Elliott’s seat at the 2025 Emmys.

Oh, and let’s start the “Thomas Keller for guest actor in a comedy” Emmy campaign now, because the French Laundry proprietor and chef has one monologue that convinced me he’s got a career as a wisdom-spouting character actor if that whole cooking thing doesn’t work out for him.

White is as impeccably frenzied and weary as ever, never softening the character’s escalating flaws. Moss-Bachrach continues his push toward making Richie the show’s hero, never fully erasing the character’s diminishing flaws. Except that Sydney is obviously the show’s real hero and Edebiri continues to deliver hilarious and heartbreaking earnestness like nobody else.

So maybe season three of The Bear really is just wheel-spinning and dragging things out. Maybe it gives the impression of being an indecisive show rather than, as it actually is, a show about characters trapped in a moment of indecision. I can’t say if this season will make viewers who watch for the plot happy, but these 10 episodes made me very pleased indeed.

Exit, pursued by thoughts of The Bear .
