ITALIAN GUIDED WALKING TOURS OPERATED BY LOCALS

Welcome to walk about italy: experts in walking tours.

I’m Gianni Stanghellini, owner and guide at Walk About Italy. I am a Ph.D. geologist with over two decades of experience in the realm of guided walking tours in Italy. For the past 22 years, I’ve dedicated myself to crafting remarkable journeys through this enchanting country. Hailing from Siena, a captivating medieval town nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, I remain firmly rooted here. The allure of this exquisite place has held me steadfast, and it’s from here that I continue to operate and shape unforgettable experiences.

Walk About Italy: Exploring Tuscany and Beyond

At Walk About Italy, our focus is on select regions, ensuring the pinnacle of Italy’s guided walking tours: Tuscany , the Amalfi Coast , Sicily , Umbria, Assisi & Le Marche , the Cinque Terre , Italian Alps & Dolomites and The Italian Lakes These seven destinations embody the rich tapestry of Italian beauty, each unique and awe-inspiring in its own right, beckoning to be explored.

A Boutique Enterprise Embracing Local Essence

Central to our ethos, we exclusively enlist local guides and drivers. Moreover, we gravitate toward intimate, family-owned restaurants and venture to small farms, offering you the opportunity to engage with the very heart of Italy’s agrarian heritage. Our commitment to fostering authentic connections means we facilitate interactions with locals at every turn.

In the words of G.K. Chesterton, “ The traveler sees what he sees; the tourist sees what he has come to see. ” Here at Walk About Italy, we invite you to transcend the role of a mere tourist, and instead, become an astute traveler, delving into the true essence of Italy.

Umbria, Assisi & Le Marche Marvels

Umbria & Le Marche are really off-the-beaten-path. Although Assisi is well known because of Saint Francis, the area remains very genuine. Food and wines are superb here. The tour starts in the medieval town of Orvieto, one hour train ride from Rome. Continues to the small towns of Trevi, Montefalco and Bevagna and ends up in the Le Marche green countryside of Urbino, on the Adriatic sea.

ROMANTIC ITALIAN LAKES

Step into romance, wander through enchanting landscapes, and embrace the allure of our Romantic Italian Lakes Walking Tour – where every step is a dance and every view a love letter to the heart of Italy

Cinque Terre September 2023 This Cinque Terre 7 day walking tour was absolutely amazing! It’s worth every cent. Amazing walks, breathtaking scenery, scrumptious Italian food and wine. So well organized! This was my 5th trip with Walk About Italy.

Tuscany has my heart! This was a trip dreams are made of. I have always wanted to see Tuscany but I am not into touristy type trips. I was a little skeptical of this tour but booked it anyway. I was blown away….It exceeded my expectations. Our guides Daniele and Chiara were a JOY to be with. They shared their countryside with us and they shared themselves. Beautiful souls. For me the hiking was wonderful and I would have done more…but beware this is definitely more of a hiking than walking tour. The food was wonderful and the wine amazing! I highly recommend. I can’t wait to try another tour.

A fantastic, boutique walking tour. Ermes and Gianni were great guides who were very accommodating and supportive; Hotels were in great location, clean and friendly staff. Breakfast was great. Great food. The ability to accommodate for individuals food requirements was great. Ermes and Gianni were fantastic guides. They complemented each other with their guiding and jokes etc. We would recommend this tour to others.

I recently embarked on a captivating tour through the picturesque regions of Umbria and the Marche in Italy. Our itinerary included enchanting stops in Montefalco, Assisi, Spello, Urbino, and the stunning Adriatic coastline. Our experienced guides, Federico and Roberto, made the journey even more engaging. Gianni, the owner of Walk About Italy, joined our group for three days, infusing a personal touch into the experience. This adventure was genuinely extraordinary, and I can’t recommend it enough!

HIKING TOURS IN ITALY

Italy represents the magnum opus of trekking destinations. whether you are traveling through the alpine summits of northern italy, or enjoying coastal walking in the tyrrhenian sea, you will notice the consistent italian commitment to quality..

Commitment to a delicious variety of food, to excellent accommodation – even in the most remote huts in the Alps, and finally a commitment to maintaining one of the world’s largest and most scenic trail systems .

Ryder-Walker offers tours in three major regions of Italy. The Italian Dolomites, our island tours on the Tyrrhenian Island of Capri and the Aeolian islands surrounding Sicily, and finally in the heart of the Italian Alps along the border with Switzerland – where the Mont Blanc and Matterhorn sit proudly.

Italy offers the absolute best in terms of mountain accommodation, set in a breathtaking landscape.Nowhere on earth has a more committed hospitality industry with the Italian Alpine hotels representing some of the absolute best in the world, regardless of whether they are trailside inns or world-class hotels.

Culturally the Italian Dolomites are a unique setting, home to the Ladin culture – a language and lifestyle that harkens back to the Roman empire. The Dolomites also drip with history, with the rugged ridgelines along the Austrian border still bristling with ruined encampments and vertigo-inducing military trails called Via Ferrata, or iron pathways. Ryder-Walker offers three distinct guided tours through the Dolomites. The Via Ladinia takes you through the Ladin heart of the Dolomites, visiting some of the region’s most remote and serene villages. The Dolomiti di Brenta trek explores the unique Brenta Dolomites, an isolated limestone group, home to the famous Via delle Bochette – one of the world’s most impressive Via Ferrata. Finally, our Italian Dolomites Trek is perhaps Ryder-Walker’s most classic offering, visiting only the most tried and true locations in Italy. For our self-guided clients we offer the Italian Dolomites Trek , the Dolomiti di Brenta , the Via Ladinia: Heart of the Italian Dolomites , as well as the Ambiance Italian Dolomites and Via Ladinia Pastorale which are our gentler variations on the the self-guided Italian Dolomites Trek. Finally, the Italian Dolomites Rifugio Trek is a fresh take on the region that spends extra nights high in the mountains in Italy’s magnificent Rifugio system.

The islands of Italy have no shortage of fame, and all of it deserved. While the Italian coast may be known for its elegant reputation and stylish living, it also offers some of the most relaxed and scenic hiking in the world . In Capri, Ryder-Walker’s self guided Isola di Capri trek explores the island known as the Jewel of the Tyrrhenian. Home to the Azure Grotto, the Villa Jovis which belonged to Emperor Tiberius, and the village of Anacapri situated atop the island’s precipitous summit. Back on the Napol coast self guided clients can explore the colorful Cinque Terre .   The Sicily Aeolian Islands trek, which we offer self guided as well, is a true island-hopping experience, which explores the volcanic archipelago that runs towards the sea from Sicily. If you’re looking for warm water and fresh fish cooked in a traditional Italian style, these trips should be at the top of your list.

The Alps along Italy’s Northwestern border are the most impressive mountains in Western Europe. Giants like the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, and Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) rise up with awe-inspiring relief, and from a much quieter and more forgotten angle than the villages below the same mountains in Switzerland and France . Ryder-Walker’s Tour du Mont Blanc and shorter self guided TMB Vitesse visits all three countries, circumnavigating the truly gigantic Mont Blanc massif. On this world-famous adventure, you will explore legendary mountain towns such as Courmayeur and Chamonix, as well as tackle some of the highest passes in the Alps. The Matterhorn Trek explores both the Italian and Swiss sides of the Matterhorn, visiting Zermatt while contrasting it with the truly sleepy and mysterious mountain towns on the Italian side of the mountain. While you may be visiting to see the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa might steal the show with its gargantuan glaciated face towering over the Italian valleys below.

Finally, we offer a couple of new self guided outings: our Italian Lakes District: Como & Bellagio trek explores the hills above the lively and lavish Italian Lakes District. Our Tuscany: A Path Through History hike explores the pastoral landscape and medieval villages surrounding the historic city of Florence.

Walks of Italy started with a simple goal: giving outstanding tours of the Roman Colosseum.

15 years, 8 destinations and 50+ tours later, our philosophy remains the same: We believe the best way to travel is to take walks.

Every Italian destination has a story to tell—but you won't hear it on a tour bus! The only way to truly understand Italy is to meet people, hear stories, and dive deep… and that's exactly what we're all about at Walks of Italy. Even when it comes to iconic attractions like the Roman Colosseum and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, we strive to find new and better ways to discover them.

You’ll experience Italy at ground level, with a small group of like-minded travelers and a new, in-the-know local friend: your guide!

“...one of the best vacations ever...”

Peggy and I had a fantastic walking tour in Tuscany! We want to give everyone in the Girosole organization who helped contribute a big “molto bene” for making this one of the best vacations ever. It’s obvious that Girosole had done a lot of research on the route, towns, accommodation and ristorantes. Everything that Girosole provided was first class. But what stood out for us was the customer service. We highly recommend Girosole and hope we’ll have the opportunity for returning – perhaps to explore Cinque Terre next time. Thanks once again for a memorable vacation.

Ann, Tarryn, Hilary, Karen and Junette

“...wonderful and memorable experience...”

A truly wonderful and memorable experience! Luca was not only very knowledgeable and good company; he was always prepared to go the extra mile and nothing was too much trouble for him. We felt thoroughly spoilt. Thank you so much for all your efforts on our behalf. It really was a pleasure dealing with Girosole. Just as an aside: perhaps you should suggest that clients allow for A LOT of extra baggage space for pecorini cheese, paneforte, chianti classico vino, shoes and handbags!!!!!

Harry Vayo & Linda Woods

“...enjoyed our trip immensely...”

Our trip was wonderful! Luca was an excellent guide, very efficient, knowledgeable, and personable. I enjoyed practicing my rusty Italian with him, & he taught me several proverbs & expressions. When he saw I was very interested in Alpine wildflowers he helped me find & identify some along the trails. He was a delightful companion. The tour was very well designed, in terms of our hiking ability & fitness level. We started with a fairly easy hike & worked our way up to more challenging. At the end we felt like we’d had a good workout, but were not exhausted. The other couple in our group were very close to us in terms of experience & fitness. We’d recommend your tours to any active people who want to see Italy off the beaten path. We enjoyed our trip immensely & will remember it (& Luca) fondly. Thanks!

Christie and Bill Waters

"...the perfect combination..."

We had a marvelous trip, and much of it was due to the planning that went into the Girosole itinerary – it was the perfect combination of walking, scenery, history, culture, time spent with the group, and time to explore on our own. I can’t imagine a better way to see the Amalfi coast. Our guide Ulisse was very friendly and helpful – he did a wonderful job of keeping us organized, giving us the history of the area, and providing advice on things to do when we were on our own. We would like to travel again with Girosole (maybe Tuscany next time) and will certainly recommend the walking tours to all of our friends.

"Angelo was a friendly, informative guide and we felt safe in the hands of Pino our driver. The inclusions stated visits to the UNESCO archeological sites but the entrance fees were not . This was confusing and an added cost we were not expecting. So you need 90euro in entrance fees and 20 euro in city taxes. About $180au per person extra.

Italy walking tours

Small group walking tours to italy.

Italy is known for its unparalleled mix of wonderful landscapes, rich cultural history, fabulous food and wine and of course for its friendly and outgoing people. In the north, the Italian Alps are every bit as magnificent as their French, Swiss and Austrian counterparts, with year-round snow covering and impressive glaciers running off their flanks. Treks in the Mont Blanc (or in Italian ‘Monte Bianco’) region usually include days in Italy as well as France and Switzerland. If you’re looking for challenging treks in the high mountains there are numerous choices in the Italian Alps, including the spectacular, pale silver Dolomites in the north-east. Famous for their craggy limestone cliffs and spires, which make them arguably the most spectacular string of mountain peaks in Europe, the Dolomites attract walkers, trekkers and climbers from all over the world.

Best hikes in Italy

The Amalfi Coast On Italy’s celebrated  Amalfi Coast , just south of Naples and the looming presence of Mount Vesuvius, you can walk through some of the most sublime coastal landscapes anywhere in the Mediterranean. With its near vertical cliffs, neatly terraced slopes, and picturesque villages impossibly located on the ridges and folds of the hills, the Amalfi Coast is superb for hiking.  You can explore a network of ancient paths and stairways criss-crossing this landscape from village to village, through vineyards, lemon orchards and chestnut groves. Amongst these classic walks the renowned ‘Path of the Gods’, with its breathtaking views over the whole Sorrento peninsula, has been called one of the most picturesque hiking trails in the whole of Italy.

Tuscany One of Italy’s finest regions for walking and trekking is  Tuscany , whose open landscapes, gently undulating hills, Renaissance cities and impossibly beautiful medieval hill-top villages are famous the world over. In the less-visited hills of northern Tuscany lies a hidden gem, the Garfagnana Valley, whose green meadows, forested hills and undiscovered villages offer some of the best hiking in the region.  From here you can walk up onto the high ridges and peaks of the Apennines and the Alpi Apuane, with quite breathtaking views out across the patchwork of fields and forest lying below. Further south in Tuscany there are beautiful walks through the classic rolling hills and vineyards of the Chianti region, along cypress lined avenues with centuries-old farmsteads and villages perched on the surrounding hills.

Sicily The focus for most walkers and trekkers in Sicily are the volcanoes. However there is so much else to enjoy too, including the rich history, the food and wine, the traditional and largely unspoilt towns and villages and the Sicilian people themselves: warm, outgoing and welcoming. You can  hike up Mount Etna , Europe’s highest volcano at 3330 metres, following little known trails to avoid the sightseeing crowds. You can also climb Vulcano, with its beautiful views across the Tyrrhenian Sea, and Stromboli - one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Stromboli is one of the very few places on earth where you can see live eruptions in relative safety. You will be accompanied by a specialist guide.

The best seasons for hiking in Italy are spring and early fall – avoiding the scorching heat of mid-summer – though the window is shorter in the Alps and Dolomites (late June through September).

Most Italians go on vacation in August, so trails are at their most crowded, and rifugi (mountain huts) in Italy's best national parks are usually packed, so you’ll need to book your bed well in advance. Wild camping is a gray area – it's prohibited in theory but sometimes tolerated in practice, providing you avoid tourist hotspots, beaches and protected areas like nature reserves. If you do, go remote, arrive at dusk and leave by dawn.

Most local and regional tourist office websites can give you the inside scoop on walking in their area. The  Italian Parks organization  lists walking trails through each of the country’s 25 national parks. Tabacco produces a decent range of topographic 1:25,000 hiking maps and apps.

Hiker relaxes in the mountainous landscape of the Italian Alps along the Sella Herbetet Traverse

Sella-Herbetet Traverse, Gran Paradiso, Piedmont

Best hike in the Italian Alps

20.5 km (13 miles) round trip, 10 hours, challenging

If you’re craving an Alpine challenge, the Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso  i n the Graian Alps is a feast. Snug against the French border in Italy's northwest, this mind-blowing wilderness has piercing blue lakes, deep forests, rushing rivers and some of the country's highest, gnarliest mountains, topping out at its eponymous 4061m (13,323ft) peak.

Starting in Valnontey, this classic one-day loop trail takes you right to its heart. From the town bridge in Valnontey, the Alta Via 2 leads along an old mule trail up to 2588m (8490ft)  Rifugio Sella , a former hunting lodge of King Vittorio Emanuele II. Between here and Casolari dell'Herbetet (a park ranger's base to the south), things get more exposed, with a traverse where you can cling on to a length of chain for protection.

The day's ascent is 1180m (3871ft) and – oh joy! – the trip is virtually downhill all the way back to the village from the casolari .  The views across the valley will make you gasp: spiky peaks, small glaciers glinting on the eastern skyline and the mighty Ghiacciaio Tribolazioni below Gran Paradiso itself. Herds of ibex and chamois graze peacefully on steep patches of grass, and you should also be able to hear and see marmots.

Tackle this one on a clear day; you’ll need to be surefooted and have a head for heights.

Two hikers stand and admire the jagged peaks of Cadini di Misurina mountains in Dolomites, Italy

Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Dolomites

Best hike in the Dolomites

9.5km (6 miles) round trip, 4 hours, moderate

Madre Natura sure was generous with Italy in the looks department, but she went the extra mile in the Dolomites , puckering up in the country’s northeast. The cloud-scraping limestone spires, buttresses and towers that punch high above meadows, lakes and spruce forests here offer some of Europe's most compelling walking country. If you're going to do just one day hike here, make it the Tre Cime di Lavaredo Circuit in the Parco Naturale Tre Cime .

Kicking off at Rifugio Auronzo, the trail weaves to Rifugio Lavaredo  and  then clambers up to 2454m (8051ft) Forcella di Lavaredo with pop-up views of the Tre Cime – a trilogy of photogenic peaks shaped like bishops' miters – slowly cracking open, before heading on to Rifugio Locatelli and back to Rifugio Auronzo.

Get an early start to appreciate the trail at its silent best (it can get busy as the day goes on, especially during the summer) and avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Access the route via the toll road from Misurina (€30).

A group of friends standing on the edge of a cliff and taking photos of the coastline below on the Path of the Gods in Campania, Italy

Sentiero degli Dei, Amalfi Coast

Best hike for a sun-kissed stroll

8km (5 miles) one way, 4.5 hours, easy to moderate

True to its name, the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) presents a heavenly canvas of southern Italian landscapes, with sensational views of the rugged, densely wooded Lattari mountains that dive down to the glittering Mediterranean and candy-colored villages tumbling haphazardly down hillsides and distant glimpses of Capri. You can nail it in half a day, but with scenery like this, why on earth rush? Pack a picnic and grab a map of the walk from local tourist offices.

Following an elevated, often rocky mule trail linking postcard-perfect Positano to the ancient fishing village of Praiano , the path unzips some of the area's least-developed countryside with minimal effort and is immediately spectacular. You'll traipse past terraced hillsides, lemon orchards and fragrant macchia (scrub) of rosemary and holm oak. A flight of 1500 steps trips gleefully down to Arienzo, where you can pause for a cooling dip, seafood lunch and cocktail at the beach club. The sunsets here are something else.

Corno Grande, Abruzzo

Best hike for climbing a mountain

9km (5.6 miles) round trip, 7 hours, moderate to challenging

Presiding over the jagged rockscapes of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga (one of Italy's largest national parks), 2192m (7191ft)  Corno Grande ("Big Horn") is the highest peak in the Apennines. Its distinctive craggy profile etches the horizon and is visible all over Abruzzo, right in the heart of Italy.

From the main parking lot at Campo Imperatore, hook onto the via normale (normal route). It's a surprisingly straightforward climb along moraine-streaked slopes to the summit, with 782m (2565ft) of ascent and some easy scrambling on the final leg. At the top, you’ll be gripped by views of rippling mountains and the Adriatic, a distant glimmer on the horizon, as well as tantalizing glimpses of Europe's southernmost glacier, the Calderone.

If you’re an experienced hiker up for more of a challenge, choose the alternative ascent that zigzags directly to the summit, a much tougher climb. In the quiet of the early morning or late afternoon, you might spot a nimble-footed chamois or a royal eagle wheeling overhead.

The best window for this hike is from early June to late September when the mountain is free of snow.

Woman walking on a path toward Corniglia, a beautiful town in Cinque Terre coast in Italy

Sentiero Azzurro, Cinque Terre

Best hike for hugging the coast

8.5km (5.2 miles) one way, 4 hours, easy to moderate

Yes, Cinque Terre   really is as jaw-dropping as the photos you’ve seen. The five precariously perched fishing villages painted in ice-cream colors look as though they’ll topple off the cliffside with the merest puff of wind.

The Sentiero Azzurro   (Blue Trail, marked No. 2 on maps) used to string them all together, teetering past vines, olive groves, forests and terraced hillsides, hugging the contour of the coastline cliffs along the sapphire Ligurian Sea. However, because of landslides, some sections of the route are currently inaccessible and are being pieced back together. For the latest updates, visit the website , which details the sections that are open.

The route is best walked east to west, from Riomaggiore to Monterosso . However, the first section of the trail, Riomaggiore-Manarola, is likely to be closed until 2024, so you'll need to start your hike at vine-wreathed Manarola , where houses cling to the sheer clifftops in a fresco painter’s palette of colors. You need to purchase a Cinque Terre Card (€7.50 for one day), which gives you access to the national park and use of its facilities.

Selvaggio Blu, Sardinia

Best hike for a hardcore multi-day trek

45km (28 miles) one way, 4–7 days, challenging

If other hikes aren’t quite hitting the off-the-radar sweet spot, oh, intrepid one, this epic jaunt along Sardinia ’s ragged east coast never fails. Often hailed as Italy's toughest trek (and you’d better believe it), the Selvaggio Blu , or "Wild Blue," throws you in at the adventure deep end.

Threading its way along the Golfo di Orosei on Sardinia's east coast, this hike is a never-to-be-forgotten, away-from-the-world adventure that requires mountaineering experience. Signs and water are desperately lacking, trail finding is tricky (even with GPS), and the going can be grueling, with abseils of up to 45m (148ft) and UIAA grade IV+ climbs.

But it's worth it. Heading south to north from Pedra Longa to Cala Fuili, the multi-day hike wriggles along one of Italy's wildest and most isolated coastlines, with deep gorges, impenetrable vegetation, cliffs dipping up to 800m (2625ft) and unrivaled views of the Mediterranean. Old shepherds' and charcoal burners' paths weave past silent coves and dramatic overhangs.

By night, you’ll camp under the starriest of night skies at remote beaches and in caves. Unless you are familiar with these parts, you will need a guide, such as mountaineering and climbing pro Corrado Conca .

Hikers walking on gray ash at sunset on Stromboli volcano on Sicily, Italy

Stromboli, Aeolian Islands, Sicily

Best hike for a volcano ascent

7.8km (4.8 miles) round trip, 6 hours, moderate to challenging

There’s no better way to get a handle on the smoldering beauty of Sicily’s Aeolian Islands than by hoofing it up to Stromboli 's perfect pyramid of a volcano. Thrusting above the cobalt sea, it certainly has the wow factor. It's not every day, after all, that you get to trek up to a permanently active cone.

The most captivating of the Aeolian Islands, Stromboli is a whippersnapper in volcanic terms, formed only a mere 40,000 years ago. For nature lovers, the climb to its crater is one of Sicily's not-to-be-missed experiences.

The hike is as diverse as it is exhilarating, with wild capers and Sicilian broom lining the trail. It gives adventurers incredible panoramas over Stromboli town, as well as starker, high-level elevation landscapes that contrast with dramatic sea views.

Go at sunset to witness the crater's fireworks at the 924m (3032ft) summit as day fades to night and then hike back down to town by flashlight in the darkness. Authorities strictly regulate access – you can walk freely to 400m (1312ft), but you'll need a guide (such as the knowledgeable guides at Magmatrek ) to continue any higher.

Remember that this is an active volcano – with a major eruption as recently as July 2019 – meaning this climb, though beautiful, comes with additional risk.

A woman walks along a path next to the archaeological ruins on the Via Appia Antica in Rome, Italy

Via Appia Antica, Rome-Brindisi

Best hike for history

12.9km (8 miles) one way, 3 hours, easy to moderate

All roads lead to Rome on the Via Appia Antica   (the Appian Way). The first mighty highway of the Roman Empire, it was built between 312 BCE and 190 BCE to link Rome to the port of Brindisi on the southern Adriatic coast, 483km (300 miles) distant. The arrow-straight path takes its name from the man who laid the first stone: Appius Claudius Caecus.

While much of it is off limits and overgrown these days, this stretch gives you a tantalizing peek of what travel would have been like more than 2000 years ago, as you tread cobblestones polished smooth by millennia of cart wheels, horse hooves and hobnailed Roman caligae (heavy-soled military sandals) and leave the frenetic buzz of Rome behind to slip into peaceful, cypress tree-dotted countryside.

It’s wrong to assume that all of Rome’s cultural big hitters are all in the center. Strike out along this path, and you’ll be amazed by the monuments and milestones that confront you at every turn, fully immersing you in the city’s enthralling past: the romantic ruins of villas where Rome's elite lived, catacombs, above-ground tombs and mausoleums.

This walk begins at the 5th-century Porta San Sebastiano , the largest of the gates in the Aurelian Walls, and ends at 2nd-century Villa dei Quintili , towering over green fields. En route, factor in stops at tiny Chiesa del Domine Quo Vadis , where St Peter encountered a vision of Jesus; the Catacombe di San Callisto , where 16 popes, dozens of martyrs and thousands upon thousands of Christians lie entombed; and Villa di Massenzio , the 4th-century palace of the emperor Maxentius, where you’ll find Rome’s best-preserved chariot racetrack, the Circo di Massenzio .

Self-guided hiking in Italy

All of our hiking trips in Italy include charming hand-picked accommodation, detailed walking notes, maps and GPS tracks.

Italy’s charms are no secret. It’s wine and cuisine are world-renowned, as are its culturally rich cities and towns. What is often overlooked though, is the fact that Italy is also a fabulous and compelling hiking destination.

Few countries can offer such an incredible variety of spectacular landscapes, from the rugged mountains and pastoral valleys of the Alps and Dolomites to the famously beautiful northern lakes of Lombardy and Piedmont ; from the idyllic countryside and picturesque hilltop villages of Tuscany to the cliff-hanging trails of the Amalfi coast and the Cinque Terre , framed by lemon groves and terraced vineyards and overlooking the vast blueness of the Mediterranean.

With walking trails that are well marked and maintained, hiking in Italy is a pleasure – and with such a variety of trails and terrain there is truly something for everyone. The best seasons for walking are spring and early autumn, though the season is shorter in the Alps and Dolomites (late June to September).

Walking in Italy

Top walking destinations in Italy

Hiking on the first world war military mule road up the Pasubio massif in Veneto, Italy

10 of the best long-distance walking routes in Italy

A new ‘slow tourism’ initiative is promoting 70 trails from Sicily to Friuli. We pick some of the most beautiful

I o Cammino in Italia (I Walk in Italy) is a campaign by walkers, guides, tour operators and hospitality providers, set up amid the coronavirus pandemic to work with local authorities to promote “slow tourism” on the country’s long-distance trails. The aim is to help rural economies hit by months of lockdown.

“In just a few days our lives changed,” says leading member Gianluigi Bettin, a guidebook writer and sustainable-tourism expert. “We became suddenly aware of our vulnerability. Now, even if our bodies are healthy, we can see that our society is not, and it’s not all down to Covid-19. Many of us see the chance, even the need, to reassess our lifestyle and values. And one simple way to do this is to walk more.”

The network covers almost 70 trails (from four-stage walks of around 60km to one of 1,006km) and most are now well-organised with waymarking, GPS and accommodation listings. Websites are mostly in Italian, but the group’s Facebook page can be used to post questions in English.

Here are 10 rewarding routes – all waymarked – with standout places to stay and eat along the way.

Cammino di Santu Jacu Sardinia

two hikers on coastal path

Various routes across the island, 1,500km The Santu Jacu network – originally used by pilgrims heading to the north-west of the island to cross to Spain for Santiago de Compostela – takes in Sardinia’s wild interior and varied coast but also has historic and cultural interest, with bronze age nuraghe, Phoenician, Greek and Roman ruins, and Romanesque churches. A demanding stretch crosses the limestone massif of the Supramonte, with caves, ravines and bandit history; a southern section from Cagliari offers sweeping coastal views.

Stay Agriturismo Pranu , near Nuoro Farmhouse in 46-hectare forest run by the Meloni family, who also raise pure-bred Arabian horses. Doubles from €114 B&B.

Antica Casa Pasolini , Mandas Historic house amid wine lands north of Cagliari, with exposed stone walls, fireplaces galore and old wood and wrought-iron furniture. Doubles from €80 B&B.

Homemade bread at Su Gologone

Eat Su Gologone , Oliena A stalwart of Sardinian cooking for decades: try spit-roasted meats with homemade wafer-thin pane carasau (a flatbread), and don’t miss a walk to the eponymous spring, high in the limestone crags.

This is not a pilgrimage but a truly ancient route across the Apennines.

Unforgettable sights include the mosaics of Monreale cathedral; Santa Cristina Gela, a village 20km south of Palermo famous for cannoli and for Arbëreshë (a form of Albanian) being spoken; Prizzi, one of the highest villages in Sicily; and Sutera, at the foot of Monte San Paolino.

Bari-Matera, 170km Suited to less-experienced walkers, this route, part of the Cammino Materano network, runs across central Puglia into “Lucania” (now Basilicata). Endless olive groves, drystone walls and trulli give way to oak and pine woods, then deep ravines near Matera. Walkers can refuel on crusty Altamura bread (famed since Horace praised it in 37BC) with sheep and goat’s cheese while walking between ancient villages and rock-cut churches. Not one for the hotter months of the year.

Wood-fired Altamura bread.

Stay La Dimora di Federico , Altamura Great-value B&B between Altamura and Gravina with simple rooms and breakfasts of local murgiana produce. Doubles from €60 B&B.

Eat Pecora Nera country pub , Cassano delle Murge The Black Sheep pub, 25km from Bari, is a little way out of the village but famous among walkers for its beers and its braised pork shanks.

A suggestion – for carnivores – is to eat like a local in Santeramo in Colle , about halfway along the route. Several of the town’s butchers offer hot food to take away or eat at simple paper-covered tables. It’s mostly meat, naturally, with grilled horse a speciality, but lots of other choices, depending on the day.

This Gorgeous European City Was Just Named the Most Walkable Destination in the World

Looking for a great walkable city? Here's why you need to make your way to Florence, Italy.

walking trips in italy

Maremagnum/Getty Images

Ready to take a stroll? A new list is uncovering the most walkable cities in the world, including the No. 1 pick, where the top five local attractions are all within a half-mile radius.

Earlier this year, the financial website Insider Monkey shared its list of the most walkable cities in the world, which it created using sources like Tourlane and WalkScore. It then took those scores, mapped the distance between each destination's top five tourist attractions, and checked its air quality using IQAir data and crime and safety indexes to further ensure walkability. After looking at all the information, it named Florence the most walkable place on earth.

"Topping the list is Florence, Italy — a city that offers Renaissance history and timeless architecture with each step," the findings shared. "Florence's walkability seeps through in its historic center, where narrow lanes lead to landmarks like the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio."

According to the report, the city's air quality is also ranked well. Its major landmarks, including the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza del Duomo, and Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, are all within 0.5 miles of each other, making it easy to walk to them all within 10 minutes.

Joining Florence at the top of the list is Riga, Latvia, in the No. 2 spot, with its top tourist destinations all within 1.5 miles; Hamburg, Germany, in third with its spots within two miles; and Porto, Portugal in fourth, with its best attractions within 2.2 miles.

Rounding out the top five is Madrid, where travelers will find all the best attractions within 2.2 miles. The city came with a slightly lower air quality index than Portugal, dropping it just one spot further down the list. Still, it's a place the team notes is well worth walking around.

"The city's walkability is most evident in central areas like Puerta del Sol and Retiro Park, which are both historic landmarks," it stated. "Madrid also has an accessible public transport system which complements the city's walkable layout."

Italy travel guide: Everything you need to know before you go

I taly has it all. The big boot concentrates some of Europe ’s most beautiful landscapes, islands, beaches and lakes , mountains and rolling vine-covered hills, and adorns them all with more art and architecture than anywhere on the planet.

You can go back every year and never see it all. Because Italy has only been as a single country since 1871, each regions has developed its own distinct character, cuisine and wine. Whether you love art or archaeology, fashion or fast cars, or food, wine and la dolce vita , you’ll love Italy.

Best time to go

Italy is a year-round destination. Summers are hot and crowded (the Italians themselves go on holiday in August ) but that’s also the time for beaches, festivals and sitting out under the stars. Spring is a delightful time to visit, with numerous events, especially around Easter, while in autumn the colours are magnificent in the mountains and vineyards as the wine harvest takes place. Winter is stellar for skiing and snowsports, opera lovers, and visiting the cities and museums minus the crowds.

Top regions and cities

Italy’s capital, Rome , is one of the world’s great cities, the magnificent stage for a lion’s share of European history, a palimpsest where ancient, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque landmarks stand shoulder to shoulder. It is the only city that surrounds a sovereign country, Vatican City, yet alongside the grandeur of the Pantheon and St Peter’s, the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, the Castel Sant’Angelo and Spanish Steps and 900 churches, there is a sense of fun. Hit the lively bars, lick gelato under the parasol pines, and hire a Vespa to pretend you’re in Roman Holiday .

Synonymous with landscapes swathed in vines, olives and cypresses that look as if they were lifted straight from a Renaissance fresco, Tuscany is a rare region that achieved a kind of perfection by the 16th century – then had the sense to not change. Tuscany’s precocious capital is Florence , where wealthy patrons, notably the Medici, helped herald in the Renaissance and filled the city with works that changed the history of art and architecture. The smaller art cities – Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Arezzo – and hill towns are jewels, and beaches line the coast when you need a break from all that art and culture.

The dream city floating on water is almost too beautiful for its own good – in fact, so many want to visit that the city has started charging day-trippers admission. But La Serenissima deserves so much more than a few rushed hours. The Grand Canal, the Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s and its piazza, the Rialto bridge – all the iconic sights take on an extra magic when illuminated at night (and the day trippers have gone). Venice is exceptionally atmospheric in winter, when the mists rise, and you can have its churches and palazzi filled with masterpieces by Titian, Bellini, Tintoretto and Veronese almost to yourself.

The Bay of Naples

Passionate, noisy, chaotic, anarchic, fabulous Naples is the queen of the south, with its unforgettable views across the water to the still smouldering Mount Vesuvius. The volcano’s most famous victim, Pompeii, is only a short train ride away, and more fascinating than ever thanks to the recent excavations. The enormous royal Palace of Caserta with its endless gardens is just inland, while the three irresistible islands in the bay – ritzy Capri, beach-rimmed Ischia and tiny Procida – are a foretaste of the sublime, vertigo-inducing Amalfi Coast that begins just to the south.

The Mediterranean’s biggest island is a mini continent, with its own culture, dialect, cuisine and stunning relics of its ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman and Neapolitan past. Palermo concentrates much of the art, but then there’s Agrigento with its Greek temples, romantic Taormina with its Greek theatre overlooking Mount Etna, superb Roman mosaics at Piazza Armerina, Byantine Norman ones at Monreale, and the elegant Baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa. The small islands of Sicily’s coasts are equally fascinating, notably the volcanic Aeolian islands, where Stromboli erupts every few minutes.

Best under-the radar destinations

In between central and southern Italy, encompassing the highest Apennines, Abruzzo is the ‘Green Region of Europe’. More than half of its territory is protected in national parks and nature reserves, home to brown bears, wolves, golden eagles, porcupines and chamois. It’s an ideal destination for an active holiday, with its walking and cycle paths, mountain lakes, beaches, ski slopes, striking hill villages and archaeological sites.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

This little triple-barrelled region borders Austria and Slovenia, and is only a 40-minute drive from Croatia . Its capital, Trieste, was once the chief port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, lending it a unique Mittel European atmosphere and cuisine. There’s arty Udine, long part of the Venetian Republic, and Aquileia – one of the best preserved Roman cities – plus sandy beaches and rolling hills that produce some of Italy’s finest white wines. In the north tower the fanatical Friulian Dolomites and Julian Alps and in between, you’ll find the Tagliamento, one of the last wild rivers in Europe.

Valle d’Aosta

This emerald valley in Italy’s far northwest is framed by Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn and majestic Gran Paradiso National Park. Smallest and least populated of Italy’s regions, where both Italian and French are official languages, it’s dotted with castles, chalets and happy cows with huge bells who produced the valley’s famous Fontina cheese. The pretty capital, Aosta, is full of Roman-medieval charm.

The mountainous instep of the Italian boot was long unknown to most tourists, although it’s just beginning to be discovered. There are small beach resorts along the Ionian and Tyrrhenian, some beautiful villages, lovely Aglianico del Vulture wine, and the fascinating city of Matera, where people lived in caves in a river canyon into the 20th century; today it’s a Unesco World Heritage Site and stand-in for ancient Jerusalem in a number of recent films.

Best things to do

Eat in bologna.

The capital of Emilia Romagna (think prosciutto, Parmesan, tortellini, mortadella, etc), Bologna is foodie heaven. Its Quadrilateral market is a gastronomic epiphany, and will whet your appetite for a dish of tagliatelle alla Bolognese – the heavenly origin of spag bol.

Garden hop on the Italian Lakes

Few places on earth can match the gorgeous scenery, villas and gardens that grow in the singular microclimates of Italy’s enormous alpine lakes – Maggiore, Como and Garda . Regular ferries and boat services will get you there – or hire your own boat.

Take in an opera

Along with Italy’s cathedrals of trilling arias – Milan ’s La Scala, Venice’s La Fenice or Naples’s San Carlo – there are wonderful summer festivals in Verona’s Roman Arena, Macerata’s Sferisterio in the Marche, Rome’s Baths of Caracalla, and others dedicated to composers, like Puccini in Torre del Lago (Tuscany), Verdi (Parma), and Rossini (Pescara).

Race a Ferrari

Fancy yourself a racing driver? Try your hand on a simulator at the Enzo Ferrari museum in Modena, the capital of Italy’s ‘Motor Valley’. For more Ferrari action, there are factory tours in nearby Maranello, plus the chance to visit the homes of Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani and Ducati with their museums and factory tours.

Getting around

Italy has a superb rail network, and the high-speed service between the major cities makes taking the train cheaper, more convenient and more comfortable than flying. Frecciarossa (red arrows) trains go up to 300km/h (186 mph) between Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Naples and Salerno, and between Turin, Milan, Verona and Venice. Coaches to towns and villages not on the rail lines are also excellent and usually depart from the nearest train station. In the cities, public transport (metros, trams, buses and, in Venice, boat-buses called vaporetti) are also easy to use.

Money-saving tip

If you aren’t bring the kids, you’ll save hundreds of pounds by avoiding travel during the school holidays, when flight and hotel prices soar. Some major attractions, such as the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, also charge less if you go between November to February.

What time zone is it in?

What’s the weather like.

It can get uncomfortably hot in July and August , especially in the south and Po Valley. Spring and autumn are mild (October and November are the rainiest months); winters require coats, even in Sicily.

What currency do I need?

What language is spoken.

Italian, but English is widely understood.

Passo Giau, Dolomites, Italy

A brand-new 7-day hiking trail is now open in Italy

The Cammino Retico journeys through 10 villages, through lush valleys and past some ancient historic sites in the Dolomites

Liv Kelly

Italy is certainly addressing its problem with tourist numbers, with authorities implementing everything from a tourist tax in Venice to an ice cream ban in Milan . But it’s not all about restrictions – the government is working on spotlighting lesser-known destinations to encourage more sustainable tourism , too.

One of the vintage tourist train routes from Rome to the Dolomites launched back in December, but in further efforts to attract more visitors to this ‘uncontaminated’ spot in northern Italy, a brand-new hiking trail has also just opened.

The Cammino Retico , plotted by social association Carpe Diem, is a 170km circular route that begins in Aune di Sovramonte (near the city of Belluno) and can be completed in seven days. Altitudes range from between 400 to 1,450 metres above sea level, and there’s plenty to see.

Journeying through 10 different villages in the Veneto and Trentino regions, the route – which is named after the pre-Roman Raeti people who lived here – incorporates pre-marked paths such as the ancient Claudia August and routes drawn out by Italy’s Club Alpino.

There are rugged limestone mountains, pretty lakes and lush valleys, as well as various points of historical interest. Monte Avena is where traces of Neanderthal populations were discovered, but you’ll also pass by the twelfth-century Sanctuary of Saints Vittore and the seventeenth-century Villa delle Centenere.

Already, there are 50 different accommodation options on offer, including amongst a mountain community in the walled town of Feltre and in Arsiè, a lakeside village.

‘It is a chance for tourists to discover the culture and traditions of these uncontaminated, rural areas,’ said Francesco De Bortoli from the Carpe Diem association to euronews , ‘And walking is the best way to do this.’

However, if you’re more of a two-wheeler than a two-booter, we’ve also got some good news: from 2025, a twin route for cyclists will be laid out as well. Sounds like it could be an addition to the best hikes and the best places to cycle , right?

Did you see that you’ll be fined €3,000 for stealing sand from Italian beaches?

Plus: A brand-new night train travelling the length of Italy is launching this summer .

I really enjoyed the tour thank you so much ! I did the 5 hours walking tour of NYC It was my first day in New York and that was the best way to explore it the city for a first time ! My tour guide was super nice and did the tour even if I was the only one on this day ! It was really easy to get in touch with him before the tour . The meeting point was easy to find the walking tour was really interesting and the guide was really welcoming funny and super nice ! I would strongly recommend it to everybody !!

walking trips in italy

Greenwich village ghost tour was a bit ghost lite. No drama or great storytelling- guides not completely to blame, New York is! but when you're shown 'the hanging tree' and told it's because the branches used to hang and annoy people so they cut them off, just about sums the experience up! Ghost lite

Photo of Anne T.

Liz was a great guide and so knowledgeable! The weather wasn't great, but we had an amazing time and even booked a private tour after we did the food tour ! HIGHLY recommend!!!

Skier Jean Daniel Pession and Girlfriend Elisa Arlian Die After Mountain Fall, Found in “Final Embrace"

Professional skier jean daniel pession and his girlfriend elisa arlian died after falling almost 2,300 feet off a mountain in italy, where they were found still tied together..

The skiing community has suffered a heartbreaking loss.

Professional skier Jean Daniel Pession and his girlfriend  Elisa Arlian  have died in "a tragic mountain accident," the Italian Winter Sports Federation confirmed June 1 . He was 28 and she was 27.

The couple suffered an almost 2,300-foot fall while hiking Mount Zerbion in Aosta Valley, Italy, according to a translated article by Italian outlet RAI . Their bodies were discovered, per the outlet, buried in the snow by search and rescue teams hours after their families reported them missing when they didn't return from the hike.

"It took hours and hours of flying over to locate them: there were no traces on the rock to suggest where they had fallen," RAI wrote , per translation. "Perhaps, while they continued along the ridge that divides the north and east faces, they slipped on the snow or the ground gave way."

The outlet added that a device was able to grab onto one of the couple's cell phone signals, helping search and rescue narrow in on their location.

"They were almost at the summit, just a step away, when suddenly they were betrayed by the mountain they loved so much," RAI reported in a video shared to X, formerly Twitter, and translated by  People . "When they were found, they were still tied together, like in a final embrace."

In its statement, the Italian Winter Sports Federation noted Pession's many accomplishments throughout his skiing career, including placing fifteenth in the 2021 final World Cup, as well as 22nd at the World Championships in 2022.

"A terrible tragedy strikes the world of winter sports and speed skiing in particular," the statement included. "President  Flavio Roda  and the entire Federation express their condolences to the Pession family for this tragic misfortune."

Aosta Valley's Regional Council President  Alberto Bertin  also expressed his condolences.

"Two young lives broken by an accident in the mountains, that mountain which was their passion," he said via translation, per RAI. "In this moment of profound sadness, we express our closeness to the families, friends and the entire sporting community, holding us close to them with affection and compassion."

Making Memories Together

Heartwarming Moments

Alongside the August 2022 photos, Elisa wrote, translated to English, “Moments that fill your heart.”

The couple celebrated Elisa’s graduation from The University of Aosta Valley in June 2023.

In the caption, Elisa thanked her boyfriend, per Instagram translations, “for always encouraging me, for coming to my aid and for always believing in me, especially when I didn't do it myself.”

All About Sophie Turner’s Boyfriend, Peregrine Pearson

preview for SOPHIE TURNER'S FASHION EVOLUTION OVER THE YEARS

In early December, 2023, Sophie Turner was seen again with rumored love interest Peregrine “Perry” Pearson, kissing one another in London. That was their second session of PDA after they were photographed together in late October, that time sharing a kiss in Paris. Turner split a few months earlier from husband Joe Jonas, with whom she shares two daughters.

The outing in October was documented by The Sun , who reported the new couple was at Gare du Nord railway station, then headed to Stade de France for the Rugby World Cup Final.

Here's everything we know about Peregrine Pearson and his connection with Turner so far.

Who is Peregrine Pearson?

Pearson is an aristocrat, officially the heir to the 4th Viscount Cowdray, which is a county in Sussex. After inheriting, he'll be the 5th Viscount Cowdray and his official full name is Hon Peregrine John Dickinson Pearson. However, he goes by Perry.

Pearson has a degree in business, management, and marketing from the University of West London. Peregrine's family has a very high net worth, reportedly over $270 million, and own large family estates.

They have been converting some of them into businesses, turning the Cowdray Estate into a location for a Polo Club, a farm shop, café, golf club, and cottages. Pearson started as the director at Cowdray Estate in 2016, according to his LinkedIn , and became the director of Weetman Developments in 2019.

“Traditionally, estates were run like holiday homes,” Pearson told The Gentleman’s Journal . “Someone got very successful, bought a home, and then used it as a way of doing whatever they wanted—polo, shooting, fishing—without really having to pay.”

He added, “But the dream is to pass it on to my son or daughter in better nick than it’s in now. That’s the mentality when it comes to estates. You’re so grateful that you’ve been given this opportunity, you want others to have the same opportunity that you had.”

While he's willing to talk business, Pearson has a private Instagram and rarely shares much about his personal life.

Who else has Pearson dated?

That said, Pearson dated King Charles III’s goddaughter, Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece and Denmark. They were first linked in 2020, but when he was not at her 27th birthday in July, it was rumored they split. The Daily Mail reported that they had officially broken up and photos of Pearson disappeared from the princess's Instagram.

How are Turner and Pearson doing in January 2024?

On Wednesday, January 17, Turner and Pearson were seen walking in London together in the evening, smiling and chatting. Pearson had his arm wrapped affectionately around the actress, who was in turn holding his wrist. The aristocrat was wearing a navy blue sweatshirt under a green jacket, denim jeans, and black sneakers. In one of his hands, a few mini alcohol bottles were visible. Turner wore an oversized beige wool coat over brown leather pants and leather slip-ons lined with fleece.

Then, on January 29, Turner might have confirmed their relationship on Instagram. She posted a photo dump from a recent ski trip with friends, starting off the carousel with a group selfie featuring Pearson seated right next to her on a ski lift.

Another group picture showed them standing close, with Pearson grinning.

When did Pearson and Turner first start becoming serious?

On Jan. 31, 2024, a source described Pearson and Turner’s relationship as escalating to Us Weekly . After a few months dating, things are “getting fairly serious,” the source said. “They had an immediate spark when they first started dating. Things have only grown closer between them since.”

Turner “never expected to find someone she cares about this quickly [after her breakup from estranged husband Joe Jonas],” the insider added.

“Of course, the physical attraction is there,” they continued. “But Perry treats Sophie with nothing but respect and he makes her laugh, which is also so important to her.”

That treatment allows her to have “a level of familiarity with him that makes her feel comfortable,” the source said. “Things are going really well, and Sophie couldn’t be happier.”

They made a public appearance together in February 2024.

The couple attended Stanley Zhu's Year of Dragon celebration on Saturday, February 10, posing for photos in the venue. Turner wore a silvery off-the-shoulder crop top with a matching body-hugging skirt. She paired the look with black heels and some small gold pieces of jewelry.

stanley zhu's year of dragon celebration

Pearson was wearing a classic black suit with a dragon on his lapel.

Pearson and Turner were seen together twice in March 2024.

On Sunday, March 3, the actress and the aristocrat were spotted leaving a luxury hotel in Paris. In some photos obtained by Daily Mail , Turner has a small smile on her face as she walks out of the hotel’s front doors with Pearson trailing right behind her.

Turner was likely in France for Paris Fashion Week. She wore a long black trench coat and cream-colored flats, while Pearson wore a polka-dot button-up shirt under a black jacket with black jeans and Adidas shoes.

Then, the very next day, TMZ released pictures of Turner and Pearson cuddling up as they walked arm in arm down the streets of the City of Lights. In one photo, Pearson planted a kiss on his girlfriend’s forehead. They both were dressed casually in jeans.

The couple enjoyed a romantic trip to Italy in May 2024.

On Friday, May 31, Pearson and Turner were seen in Capri, Italy, enjoying a relaxing moment. Pearson was sipping a glass of white wine while Turner had a cigarette. He was wearing a black shirt with white pants, while Turner wore a blue sweater, jeans, and carried a Louis Vuitton purse.
