A Guide to Santa Fe’s Summer Events

Image may contain Person Teen Architecture Building House Housing Villa Walking Clothing Hat Backpack and Bag

For centuries, Santa Fe has held its own as a maverick of a city—an artist enclave, a spiritual haven, a mystical land beckoning travelers from around the globe. This didn’t happen by chance. To understand Santa Fe’s appeal, one must simply take a look back in time.

The oldest capital city in the US, Santa Fe was established in 1610 serving as the capital of the Spanish “Kingdom of New Mexico.'' Long before that, the city was home to New Mexico’s 23 Native American tribes, nations, and pueblos, each its own sovereign nation. All this historical context explains why Santa Fe is an inherently fascinating place; it was built on a melding of traditions that layered upon each other to create something entirely new. Every dish you taste, gallery you visit, and landscape you witness is an embodiment of the city’s singular culture, one that must be experienced to be fully understood.

The best way to take it all in is with a visit to Santa Fe in the summer months. A slew of exciting events take to the streets every year from May to August, offering visitors the chance to interact with locals and understand how The City Different earned its name. Here’s everything you won’t want to miss this summer in Santa Fe.

SWAIA Native Fashion Week - May 2-5, 2024 The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) Native Fashion Week is right at home in Santa Fe’s vibrant community, celebrating the intersection of traditional Native American artistry with contemporary fashion design. Kicking off with an opening cocktail party at the Governor’s mansion, this four-day event includes runway shows, panels, pop-ups highlighting the creativity and diversity of Indigenous designers.

Santa Fe International Literary Festival - May 17-19, 2024

It’s no surprise a notable international literary festival chose Santa Fe as its home base, for the city’s vast history is rooted in the oral and written art of storytelling. Bringing together an inspired group of prize-winning authors, the Santa Fe International Literary Festival includes mainstage lectures, walk-and-talk opportunities with authors and attendees, and inspired one-on-one author conversations, all crafted to explore the art of writing during a time period of extraordinary change.

Santa Fe School of Cooking Santa Fe’s deep-seated food culture reflects a crucial facet of the city’s soul, telling the stories of the various groups of people who have called it home over the past centuries. Explore these rich traditions with the help of a contemporary chef at a hands-on cooking class centered around the vast landscape of Southwestern fare. Whether it be a red chile workshop, a tamale-making class, or a Native American cooking demonstration, you’ll come away with a new appreciation for Santa Fe’s cuisine.

CURRENTS New Media Festival - June 14-23, 2024 Emerging technology has transformed the landscape of every facet of modern life, including art, and CURRENTS is a testament to this convergence. The annual art and technology festival creates a space for emerging and established new media artists to showcase their work in dynamic formats like VR, mixed-reality environments, and AI-artist collaboration. Santa Fe Opera - June 28-August 24, 2024 There’s opera, and then there’s the Santa Fe Opera. Visitors flock from around the globe to catch a show in this majestic setting; an open-air adobe structure with views of the mountains to the east and colorful New Mexican sunsets to the west. Living up to its moniker The City Different, Santa Fe’s opera entails an elegant sort of tailgating beforehand—white tablecloths, sophisticated picnics, and wine are the norm.

Santa Fe Margarita Trail Santa Fe was the first city in the New World to import tequila from Mexico, so it makes sense that the margarita is a staple cocktail. To explore the city’s vibrant bar scene, secure a Margarita Trail passport or download the app and make your way around the city to taste 50 different signature margaritas—not all in one day, of course. Get your Margarita Trail passport stamped at each bar and unlock prizes as you go.

20 th Anniversary International Folk Art Market - J uly 11-14, 2024

Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious folk art festivals in the world, the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe brings artists and artisans from dozens of countries to showcase their traditional crafts—textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and other handmade items are featured. This year’s event marks the 20th anniversary of the market, a true testament to the staying power of the folk art form.

Traditional Spanish Market - July 27-28, 2024 Located on the historic Santa Fe Plaza, the Traditional Spanish Market is the oldest and largest juried art show of its kind in the nation. Celebrating the rich heritage of the region’s Hispanic and Spanish-speaking communities, the Spanish Market entails an exciting slate of events, from the competition to live flamenco performances to regional Hispanic bands on the bandstand.

Stroll Down Canyon Road Aside from its photogenic charm—a half-mile, tree-lined pedestrian stretch—Canyon Road has the highest density of galleries in the country. Once all private homes, the charming adobe structures on Canyon Road now feature works of art from all over the world. Expect everything from contemporary to traditional, Western to Native American.

Santa Fe Indian Market - August 17-18, 2024 If you haven’t already noticed, summer is art fair season in Santa Fe, and the Indian Market is one of the crown jewels of the season. Hundreds of Native American tribes gather over this weekend fair, transforming Santa Fe’s historic plaza into a kaleidoscope of Indigenous artistry. Intricate works range from jewelry to sculpture to pueblo wooden carvings to beadwork and much more. Exploring the market is not only a premier art experience, but an opportunity to hear firsthand the stories of strength and resilience expressed through these incredible works.

100 th Anniversary Burning of Zozobra - August 30, 2024 Summer comes to a close in Santa Fe with the highly anticipated Burning of Zozobra. The towering effigy, created by a local Santa Fe artist, is a grimacing figure cloaked in black robes, gloomy and dark. As the sun sets, the fire spirit is unleashed on Zozobra. Excitement mounts as he burns, symbolizing the destruction of fear and anxiety.

Santa Fe Farmers’ Market A visit to one of the oldest and largest growers markets in the country is a requisite while visiting Santa Fe. More than 150 farmers bring delicious, fresh produce, prepared food, and wares to sell at the thriving market held twice weekly, every Tuesday and Saturday during the summer. The market promotes sustainable agriculture in New Mexico and provides healthy food for visitors and locals alike. Everything sold at the market is grown locally in New Mexico and is sold directly by the growers and producers themselves.

Santa Fe isn’t like any other place you’ve been, and a summertime visit will leave you rejuvenated, inspired, and ready to return. To learn more and start planning your trip today, visitsantafe.com .

Grinchmas at Universal Orlando

Citizens of Whoville spread holiday cheer and the Grinch himself stars in a retelling of the story about when he stole Christmas. You can even get an autograph after the show ends.

Christmas Candylane at Hersheypark

Hersheypark

Hershey, Pennsylvania, aka "Chocolate Town USA", serves up a lot of family fun every year during Christmastime, including opportunities to see Santa. Most notably, the Hersheypark theme park opens up for  Christmas Candylane , with more than one million twinkling lights, Santa and live reindeer, a Christmas show, a giant carousel, and other decorated rides.

The Polar Express and Other Christmas Trains

Napa Valley Wine Train

"The Polar Express" is a beautifully illustrated children's book (and blockbuster movie) by Chris Van Allsburg about a child's  train ride to see Santa  at the North Pole. In a number of locations in the U.S., a family can have a "Polar Express" experience: a real-life train ride for kids, that re-creates the mood and even some events from the classic book.

Victorian Holiday Wonderland in Breckenridge, Colorado

GoBreck, Breckenridge Tourism Office

Breckenridge is one of Colorado's excellent ski destinations and is also a quaint town with Victorian architecture that dates back to mining days. Have fun with your kids in the Victorian Christmas atmosphere, with decorated shops on Main Street and the Lighting of Breckinridge when Santa arrives in town in a horse-drawn sleigh.

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

Colonial Williamsburg is fun throughout the year, with a beautifully restored historic district, peopled by real-life actors bringing to life the days just before the American Revolution. Create a Swedish Santa out of yarn at Bassett Hall; visit Hennage Auditorium and meet Russia's Grandfather Frost, Italy's La Befana, and America's Santa Claus; and learn about the history of Christmas around the globe.

Holiday Windows in New York

littleny/Getty Images

In New York City, the Christmas spirit gets started with Santa's appearance at the  Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade , which kicks off the season of  Christmas sparkle in NYC . Catch a glimpse intricate window displays at retailers like Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and more.

The Christmas Town in Bethlehem, Connecticut

Connecticut Office of Tourism

Bethlehem, a pretty place to visit, in Connecticut's Litchfield Hills, is a small town that makes the most of its name at Christmas time. Each December, thousands of people make a pilgrimage to Bethlehem to mark their Christmas mail with not only the Bethlehem postmark, but also special rubber-stamps known as "cachets". The best time for families to visit is during the Bethlehem Christmas Town Festival, a two-day event in early December. Opening night has a candlelight processional, and the arrival of Santa to light a 75-foot Christmas Tree.

Santa Claus, Indiana

 Santa Claus, Indiana

Santa Claus  is a great name for a town, most kids would agree. This town in southern Indiana got its name way back in 1856. By 1935, someone had seen the potential for the place to be a tourist attraction, and "Santa's Candy Castle" was opened, reportedly the first themed attraction in the United States.

Christmas in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Bill Heinsohn/Getty Images

Santa Fe , with its adobe architecture, and a mix of Anglo, Hispanic, and Native American cultures, is a strikingly beautiful city to explore. At Christmas-time, traditions from these three cultures come together for a unique festive season.

For starters, there are the "farolitos", the "little lanterns", also called "luminarias": hundreds of glowing lights line walkways and rooftops, each one a small paper bag with a candle set in sand inside. On Christmas Eve, the Santa Fe Plaza glows with farolitos.

A good place for kids to see Santa and his elves is "Christmas at the Palace", with Hispanic, Anglo, and Native American Christmas traditions, carols, storytelling, Matachine dancers, and an appearance by Santa Claus. "The Palace" is the  Palace of the Governors , an elegant adobe-style building dating back to the 17th century. Christmas at the Palace dates are typically early in the month.

See Santa at Christmas Grottos in London

Alan Copson/Getty Images

Kids in the U.K. see Santa, not at his Workshop, but in his "grotto." His grotto isn't dark or cave-like, but rather a Christmas-y setting with elves, bright lights, decorated trees, etc.

Apparently, the tradition started in Adelaide, Australia, with a "Magic Cave" set up in a department store in 1896, and the practice caught on in British stores. Nowadays, you can find a "Santa's Grotto" at most department stores and shopping centers in the U.K. Kids line up to see Santa and get a little gift. Grottos are not always free; some charge the equivalent of $5 or more (and presumably Father Christmas then gives the kids a nicer little gift).

Families ready to grab their winter coats and off-season airfares can have a wonderful London Christmas that includes holiday lights at famous sights, outdoor skating rinks, the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, caroling, Christmas markets , and generally a good chance to imagine you're back in Christmas Past where Scrooge and Bob Cratchit walked the Victorian-era streets. London also has a gigantic New Year's Day parade .

Santa's Village, White Mountains, New Hampshire

Santa's Village

This amusement park for little kids is open for the summer season, with Christmas-themed rides like the "Reindeer Coaster" and the "Yule Log Flume Ride". Kids can see Santa and his reindeer even in July. Santa's Village re-opens after Thanksgiving for special weekends leading up to Christmas Eve. Most rides are open; fun includes Christmas carousel, ferries wheel, Santa's Express Train, and visits with Santa.

The Best Places to See Santa Across the Country

By Alexandra Macon

Macys Santa Claus 2016

The countdown is officially on. It’s T-2 weeks until Christmas, and if you’re like me you’ve left taking your kids to see Santa Claus to what feels like the eleventh hour. In New York City, finding a place where your children can sit on Saint Nick’s lap that’s relatively stress-free isn’t child’s play. There are queues to contend with everywhere you go—and waiting doesn’t bode well for my fidgety almost-2-year-old. Those in the know download apps that allow you to make reservations in advance. But even armed with technology, you often end up feeling powerless. There’s only so much your smart phone can do when you’re faced with weekends that are booked solid and relegated to a weekday time slot during regular office hours (not an easy feat for a working mom). After five Santa visits for two kids under my belt—for which I’ve spent countless hours in line—I have a thing or two to share about how to see dear old Saint Nick. Here’s hoping your encounter is merry—and there aren’t any meltdowns to speak of . . . from kids or parents.

Have a favorite Santa that we’ve left off the list? Let us know in the comments below, and we’ll add him.

Baby Braithwaite 102 West Paces Ferry Road NW This idyllic children’s store in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood hosts Santa on Fridays and Saturdays early in the holiday season. It’s $75 per sitting, but you walk away with a flash drive full of photos. Appointments cannot be changed or canceled and are nonrefundable—and a source claims they sell out four minutes after going live on their site. “That said, it’s so civilized, calm, and quiet,” says a mom of two who’s been five times. “Santa is also seriously handsome. I actually think he’s the real one.”

Phipps Plaza 3500 Peachtree Rd NE The Santa Claus at Phipps Plaza is practically famous in Atlanta. He’s been there forever and reportedly parents start making reservations as early as July. Rumor has it the old man brings in over $100k a season’s work—and people come from far and wide to see him. Parents who visited him as children get a real kick out of bringing their own kids.

James Island County Park 871 Riverland Drive Millions of multicolored lights decorate this county park for its annual Holiday Festival of Lights, which Coastal Living dubbed one of the “Top 10 Holiday Celebrations” and USA Today called one of the “Best Public Lights Displays.” Guests can take it all in by car or on foot, exploring more than 700 light displays, and then finish off their tour with a visit with Saint Nick. He’s on location at Santa’s Village every night through December 23.

** Marion Square **The intersection of Calhoun and King Streets Every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through December 18, Santa and Mrs. Claus are available for a photo op, situated in the corner of this park, in the heart of downtown Charleston. Music by local children’s choirs and bands often serves as a festive backdrop to this picturesque setting.

Macy’s 111 North State Street The former Marshall Fields store was converted into a Macy’s about a decade ago, but many still refer to Chi-town’s Santaland by its original “Cozy Cloud” name. Located on the fifth floor, Saint Nick has being seeing visitors from this space since 1948. More recently, a helpful texting system has been implemented. Once lines are 45 minutes long, customers’ phone numbers are taken and text messages are sent with estimated wait times so people can shop or eat while they wait.

North Park Mall 8687 North Central Expressway This upscale shopping mall has had the same Santa for over twenty-five years. He’s located on level one within Macy's Shopping Court and locals have made visiting him an annual holiday tradition. Story time with Santa is at 10:30 A.M. Monday through Thursday and at noon on Sundays. According to one Dallas-based mom, “He is classic—which a beautiful jolly face, white hair, and a beard. Dallas loves him!”

Los Angeles

The Grove 189 The Grove Drive Santa is at The Grove through December 24. Online reservations are already booked up, but walk-ins are welcome, just be prepared to wait. On Tuesday, December 13, you can bring your pets in for photos, too.

New York City

ABC Carpet & Home—Union Square 888 Broadway, between East 18th and East 19th Streets This extremely authentic-looking Santa Claus is legit. He boasts a real beard, rosy cheeks, and a button nose that’ll make you believe. His remaining appearances are limited to December 11 and 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and there are the lines to prove he’s in hot demand. The Cons: The majority of your time spent in line is outside, which can be hard on wiggly little ones and when temps are frigid. There’s also no professional photographer on site, so you have to have your iPhone ready while also skillfully positioning your child on Santa’s knee for your own personal photo op. The Pros: It’s free! And, he’s one of the best Santas we’ve ever seen. Parents can window-shop at ABC and scan the prices of Oriental rugs while they wait—and kids get a chic felt ornament as a parting gift afterward.

Macy’s—Midtown 151 West 34th Street, between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, Eighth Floor Macy’s Santaland is pretty much Mecca. Starting right after Thanksgiving and running through December 24, the store transforms a floor into a North Pole village complete with an enchanted forest and an awe-inspiring train display. To say the line is long would be an understatement, but while you wait, you wander through said village and that’s all part of the experience. If you want to hop the queue, you can sign up for an express pass up to 48 hours prior to meeting Santa, but then you get only a quick peek at Santaland before meeting the Big Guy.

The Plaza Hotel Fifth Avenue at Central Park South Located in the concourse level, The Plaza Food Hall is bustling with holiday shoppers grabbing a quick bite to eat. Santa is ensconced in a plushly decorated side area where he sits atop a chaise surrounded by lots of white faux fur. The Eloise Shop is just beyond the line that typically forms around 30 minutes before the Big Guy shows up. If you’re with another adult, one person can wait in line while the other takes the kids to check out the gift shop. You have to pay for image packages, but the setup is festive and the photographer does a good job of coaxing smiles from the kids, so it’s likely well worth it.

Brookfield Place 230 Vesey Street at West Street There’s an app you can download to make reservations. While you have to pay, nothing beats skipping the lines. They’re already booked up this weekend—but weekdays next week boast many an opening. There’s an ice rink outside where skating is free and a food court upstairs, so Brookfield Plaza is definitely a worthwhile option if you can get a reservation. The Nutcracker characters also show up on select dates, which can make for an even cooler experience. Photo packages start at $27, and while waiting in line kids can take part in holiday-themed activities like ornament-making. The schedule is a little wonky, though, so make sure you review the times on the website carefully.

Macy’s 170 O’Farrell Street Just like in NYC, Macy’s Santaland in San Francisco has pretty much cornered the market on creating the ideal Christmas setting for Santa to park his sleigh and meet with kids.

** Santa Under the Dome at Westfield Mall **865 Market Street You’ll find Saint Nick on Level 4 under the historic Dome. In addition to kids, there are designated days when pets can pose for pics, too. To take a shortcut, visit the website and book a Fast Pass in advance.

Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens Located about 10 miles southwest of downtown Savannah, the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens is a wonderful green space open to the public. From the Friday after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve, to celebrate the season, the garden is decorated with one million lights that guests can take in via a self-guided walking tour. Mrs. Claus steals the spotlight on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. when she hosts story time. And then, you can visit with Saint Nick on Saturdays between 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the exception of Christmas Eve—due to a pretty obvious prior obligation.

how to get this offer

I think you just go to bed on Christmas Eve and he just shows up. You might have to live in a first world and/or Christian country, though. I haven’t tested that theory.

River oaks golf course in Cottage Grove has a Santa breakfast!

Thank you, Jess. We will look into this and get it added.

FYI, I think the Caring Santa and the Bedtime Santa descriptions and links are mixed up.

Thanks for catching that, Kristen! I had to laugh thinking Caring Santa would have been fine with pajamas, too! 🙂

Where to see santa in san francisco this holiday season, santa is back in san francisco for christmas and here is where you can see him..

Santa Claus will be back in San Francisco this holiday season after a couple of years of COVID-19 restrictions that made it difficult for kids to visit with him and share their Christmas wishes.

SAN FRANCISCO— Santa Claus will be back in San Francisco this holiday season after a couple of years of COVID-19 restrictions that made it difficult for kids to crawl up on his lap and make their case that they’ve been good boys and girls over the last year.

Visits and pictures with Santa are at the heart of many families’ holiday traditions, but the coronavirus pandemic gave them a lump of coal. Malls and other places took social distancing measures in both 2020 and 2021 to help contain the spread of the virus, moving Santa meet-ups largely online.

Virtual visits are still an option in many places, but there’s nothing quite like seeing jolly old St. Nick live and in person. In San Francisco, kids have several chances:

Find out what's happening in San Francisco with free, real-time updates from Patch.

Children can visit Santa now through Dec. 24 at the Stonestown Galleria Mall, 3251 20th Avenue and have their picture taken with Santa. Reservations are not required to visit with Santa, but if you book a visit ahead of time, you can save 30 percent or more on your photo package. What Is The History Of Semana Santa

So, are you ready to find out more facts what is the history of Semana Santa?

Here, we’ll answer all your questions, such as “ where is Semana Santa celebrated in Spain ”, “Why is Semana Santa important?” and “ How is Semana Santa celebrated in Spain ?”

1. Origins and Early Observances

an illustration with Semana Santa celebrated in the past, what is the history of semana santa

“Semana Santa” in Spain means Holy Week, and it refers to how they celebrate Easter in Seville and, indeed, in other parts of the country too.

Semana Santa in Spain is a religious and cultural holiday, and it involves processions, parades, and celebrations that have a long history and heritage.

The religious meaning of Semana Santa is held dear throughout Spain, with many people of all ages remaining passionate about their Semana Santa traditions.

Although Easter festivals in Spain are customary, the South of the country is especially dedicated to its ancient customs, and so one of the best festivals in Andalucia is Semana Santa.

So, what is the history of Semana Santa? The traditional celebrations of Holy Week in Spain date back to the Middle Ages.

La Semana Santa in Spain has been celebrated in its current form since the 1500s.

Many of the elements seen during Easter in Andalucia date back centuries to a time when the Roman Catholic Church established the tradition of carrying out processions to explain the Easter story to the people.

For centuries, the Catholic church held rituals and masses to mark the celebration of Easter.

During Medieval times, Christians congregated together at Easter to show their respects to Jesus and his Passion.

In those days, different neighborhood Parishes would be led by priests to show devotion to different images representing saints.

Often, statues of a church’s patron saint would either be crafted by local artisans who would then donate them to their church or commissioned by one of the religious brotherhoods or cofradias who would raise the money to cover the cost.

Over time, artisans would adopt their own specific saint to represent their physical condition or job.

The statues that were created to venerate those saints would offer protection and security to those who prayed to them, particularly in times of war, drought, illness, or other kinds of trouble.

One ritual that evolved over time was the “ via crucis” or “ stations of the cross” – a set of 14 different events based on Jesus’ road to Calvary.

Even today, Catholics adhere to this tradition, either in church or on a larger scale in towns, as happens in Spain.

When the Crusaders returned from Jerusalem, they brought the “ via crucis” cult with them. As a result, processions during Holy Week became standard practice.

Part of the Easter celebration involved showing penitence for sins, and during Medieval times, monks would walk through the city streets during Holy Week and “self-flagellate” or whip themselves as a way to repent.

Some lay people began to copy them, and thus, penitent brotherhoods formed amongst the local craft guilds, who would join in with this Eastertime penance.

At this time, the church was also keen to help demonstrate to the people the meaning of Easter in a way that they could understand and engage with.

To that end, they established Passion Plays and Parades that would showcase various elements of the Easter story.

Thus, the Spanish Easter Procession as we know it today was born.

2. Semana Santa during the Spanish Inquisition

night processions holding candles, what is the history of semana santa

What is the history of Semana Santa and what’s the impact of the Inquisition?

For example, the pointed, conical-shaped hats that are worn during Easter Week in Seville and other Andalucian cities have their origins in the Inquisition.

Those who were required to show penance for their sins in public were forced to wear conical hats to mark them out from the crowd.

The Spanish Inquisition began during the 15 th century and continued until the early 1800s.

During this time, there was a strong emphasis on Catholicism, resulting in a renewed religious fervor and a move towards more visual demonstrations of faith.

It was in 1448, just before the Inquisition began that the church had given Franciscan monks in Seville permission to form their own flagellant brotherhood or Hermandad .

In the early years of the Inquisition, in 1487, they then approved a similar brotherhood in Malaga as a way to re-catholicize the city as it recovered from Islamic domination.

Thanks to the improvement in the Spanish economy due to its New World expansion, there was more money available to create ever-more dramatic celebrations to mark religious occasions, and thus, the Easter processions became increasingly impressive.

More Cofradias were formed with lay people processing in masks, bearing crosses that were on fire.

Rapidly, the cult of processions grew amongst the many guilds in the cities, and more and more money was being spent on Semana Santa festivities – something which did not please the church authorities.

In the early 1600s, the church decided to try to control and organize the practice of Easter processions and licenced Cofradias so that they would have specifically controlled routes and times.

This kind of organization continues today.

Despite attempts to ban guild-based Cofradias in 1783, allowing only the religious orders to carry out processions, the practice continued and was widespread once more within a couple of decades.

The 1800s saw a decline in processions because of many traumatic events that affected the country, including famines, plagues, and environmental disasters, as well as political upheaval and the Napoleonic Wars.

Yet the tradition still remained strong in the hearts and minds of the people, and by the century’s end, the practice was revived, only to be once more subjected to upheaval during the time of civil war.

1921 saw General Franco promoting the reinstatement of the Cofradias and the Semana Santa celebrations as a way to express Catholic feelings.

The practice has continued to grow and develop as time has gone on, and today, it is both a national institution and a tourist attraction.

3. Evolution of Processions and Iconography

man dresses in a white robe carrying a cross for Semana Santa, what is the history of semana santa

One of the key elements regarding what is the history of semana santa is its religious floats or pasos, which parade through the streets of participating cities and towns, often for several hours.

These floats were born from the original statues that were created during the Middle Ages and kept in various churches.

As the cult of processions and the stations of the cross took hold, the statues developed into impressively decorated floats that would be carried around the neighborhood, and often to the cathedral before returning to their place of origin.

Each paso belongs to a different brotherhood and represents a specific element of the Easter story.

Many of them are centuries old and they are elaborate, beautiful, and carefully carved. They are also exceptionally heavy and require many people to carry them.

The people who carry the floats are known as penitents, and they participate in the processions as their own public penance. Some may even complete the entire procession barefoot.

Some of the participants in the procession are known as Nazarenos . They wear the traditional conical hats with veils to cover their faces, leaving only their eyes on display.

While this headgear is somewhat problematic these days as it conjures up images of the KKK, there is no connection between the two things.

The idea was originally that the Nazarenos would be masked so that they could carry out their penance without any kind of public recognition.

The processions can involve as many as 3000 people, with some involving children.

Crosses are carried as well as candles, which are lit during the evening parades for even more atmospheric impact.

Each city’s Semana Santa celebrations are slightly different and involve different types of artistic expression.

For example, in Seville, there are Saetas , or religious acapella songs, performed at regular intervals.

Music is a key element of the festivities, and it adds even more ambiance to the celebration.

4. Semana Santa in Modern Times

Semana Santa in Malaga, people with blue robes parading the city, what is the history of semana santa

Although only around 18% of people in Spain practice Catholicism regularly, Holy Week in Malaga, Seville, and other parts of Andalucia, and, indeed, the rest of Spain, still sees a lot of participation.

Even those who aren’t devoutly religious value the traditional way that Easter in Granada and the surrounding areas is celebrated and want to play their own part in the festivities.

It is a cultural rather than a religious occasion today.

The Cofradias are really about being a community in the 21 st century, and their unique identities, costumes, and floats are a special way to mark that sense of community rather than purely being a religious devotion these days.

Even those who are not religious, and who are not even Spanish immediately think of these dramatic processions and want to be part of the experience.

It’s no surprise that so many people come to spend Easter in Malaga, Spain so that they can sample a taste of the authentic side of Andalucia.

Easter Week in Malaga, Seville, or any of the other major Southern cities is something that every keen traveller should participate in at least once in their lifetimes.

Tourists from all over the world are now asking, “What is the history of Semana Santa?”

They are being drawn to this part of Spain to see for themselves exactly how the Spanish demonstrate their cultural heritage.

It’s clear that not only is Holy Week a culturally and traditionally significant time for the Spanish people, but it’s also an opportunity to achieve greater global recognition and boost tourism – something that is crucial for the nation’s economy.

People come from all over Spain, not to mention from other parts of the world, to eat, drink, stay in local hotels and apartments, and spend their Easter holiday in a setting that still respects its true meaning.

Spain’s La Tomatina 2024: the fullest guide to the messiest festival

If it’s the last Wednesday in August, it’s got to be the world’s messiest festival.

In Buñol, Spain  – 40km (25 miles) west of  Valencia  – La Tomatina festival is a wild, silly and very, very saucy tomato-throwing spectacle that draws 20,000 produce-pitching revelers each year. If you’ve always dreamed of throwing your, um, tomato in the ring, here’s all the information you need to squeeze the most out of this chaotic, one-of-a-kind celebration.

Revelers at the annual Tomatina festival

What is La Tomatina?

The (ticketed) mayhem takes place in Plaza del Pueblo (Buñol’s main square) and Calle Cid. At around 9am the palo-jabón –  a large greased pole with a ham attached to its end – is hoisted into the air. A mad scramble ensues as people struggle against each other to pull it down.

At precisely 11am, regardless of whether someone has successfully grabbed the ham (which is rare), a firework provides a signal to parked trucks to start tipping over 100 tons of overripe, squishy tomatoes onto the square. For the next hour, everyone joins in a frenzied, cheerful, anarchic tomato battle – until a second firework signals the end of play.

Why does this wacky tradition exist?

The festival dates to 1945, according to the La Tomatina website , when a kerfuffle during a cultural parade in Buñol led to a market stall of vegetables falling victim to a fired-up crowd. Townsfolk reportedly revived the food fight the following year, bringing their own tomatoes from home. After the festival was banned in the early 1950s, a “tomato burial” held in protest in 1957 paved the way for La Tomatina to be recognized as an official festival. Since 2013, the festival has been ticketed to limit total attendance to a (somewhat) manageable 20,000.

You haven’t done really La Tomatina unless you…

Are still finding bits of tomato in your hair, up your nose, under your nails and between your butt cheeks for days or even weeks after the festival.

Revelers mock a swim in tomato pulp at the annual La Tomatina tomato-throwing festival, Buñol, Spain

What to pack for La Tomatina

Most important: a change of clothes, including shoes. You can usually leave this on the coach you’ll take to Buñol; if not, bring a backpack-style dry bag. Buñol City Council now provides showers, so you can freshen up to a degree before you get back on your bus.

Pack a chest strap if you’re planning to film the action with a GoPro, as you’ll need your hands free for hurling tomatoes (or shielding yourself from tomatoes being lobbed at you). And a fully waterproof phone case with a sturdy neck strap for your phone – if you dare to bring it.

What to wear to La Tomatina

Wear old clothes and closed-in shoes with decent grip, and a pair of swimming goggles to protect your eyes – that acidic tomato juice can really sting. Ski goggles will also work, but these can be pulled off more easily. Leave your hat behind.

Outer layers commonly get ripped off in the fray, so we recommend that women wear a tight sports bra or a crop-style bikini top and a swimsuit bottom underneath, and that men sport a snug Speedo.

How long does the tomato fight last?

Expect the tomato tossing to last for about an hour. The chaos concludes after the second firework.

La Tomatina: the “do” list

  • Do... ensure your tomatoes are fully squashed before you throw them. This will help to avoid injuring someone. Be warned, though, that others won’t always be so kind.
  • Do... remember to look up. Locals join in by pelting festivalgoers with their own tomato supplies from apartments above the square.
  • Do... look out for your mates, and the people around you. La Tomatina gets pretty hectic. If you’re not big on crowds, mess and discomfort, this isn’t the festival for you.
  • Do... stop throwing tomatoes when the second firework goes off. That’s when it’s all over, folks.
  • Do... verify your travel insurance. The festival ticket price includes insurance; make sure the policy provides adequate coverage for your needs.

La Tomatina: the “don’t” list

  • Don’t.. .bother trying to avoid getting pelted with fruit. Just let it happen.
  • Don’t.. .wear any jewelry. Hoop earrings in particular: these can get ripped out, painfully.
  • Don’t.. .bring bottles or hard objects. You won’t be allowed to bring them into the festival area.
  • Don’t.. .get too close to the tomato trucks. You really don’t want to get pushed under those tires.
  • Don’t.. .drink too much alcohol the night before (or the morning of). The stench of rotting tomatoes in the midsummer sun is no fun with a hangover. On that note, drink plenty of water before you enter the festival: it gets very hot waiting around for the fun to begin.
  • Don’t.. .get too rough. Pushing, shoving and ripping people’s clothing on purpose is not OK.

How do I get to La Tomatina?

It takes roughly an hour by bus to reach Buñol from Valencia. All festival tickets purchased via the La Tomatina website now include return same-day bus transport from other cities in Spain, such as  Barcelona , Madrid , Alicante , Almería , Benidorm , Dénia , Calpe and Cartagena, so you can just come for the (messy) day if you like. Keep in mind that buses from Barcelona depart at 3:30am.

What should I do if I want to return with a great story?

Have a go at climbing that greasy pole.

What is the biggest no-no at La Tomatina?

Bringing anything to the festival that you’re not comfortable losing.

Where should I stay?

Most festivalgoers who aren’t just busing in for the day spend opt to stay in Valencia, so book early.

You can also book hostel and hotel accommodations through the La Tomatina website if you’re keen to mingle with other attendees. A range of other operators, including Busabout , also offer festival packages.

If you’re traveling independently, consider staying in Buñol for the week-long celebration, which involves music, dancing, parades and fireworks. The night before the fight, a paella-cooking competition is held. Book as early as possible to secure accommodation in town.

La Tomatina is surely the messiest festival in the world

Can I bring children to La Tomatina?

There’s no age restriction at the festival, but we’d advise against bring young kids as things can get very rowdy (dozens of people get injured every year). It’s easy to become separated in the fray, so if you do bring children, arrange a meeting point before the festival gets underway, and use a permanent marker to write your phone number on their arm/s.

A safer option for kids is the La Tomatina Infantil ( Tomatina Kids ) event (ages 4–12) held in Plaza del Pueblo the week before the main festival. This year’s “mini battle,” which lasts up to 40 minutes, will take place at noon on August 24.

What can I do after the festival?

One of the benefits of staying in Valencia is the easy access to the official after-party held in the city, with tickets available from the La Tomatina website. The birthplace of paella, Valencia is a beautiful coastal city well worth sticking around to explore afterward.

Is La Tomatina a waste of food?

The low-quality tomatoes purchased cheaply for the festival are on the turn or already rotten, so they are unlikely to have had an alternative future in someone’s salad.

I missed out on this year — how do I start planning for next year?

Tickets are already on sale for 2024 and will sell out – so book soon . Bookmark the official ticket site to be first in line for 2025 tickets, which go on sale several months before the annual event.

See them while you can: Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival returns for eighth year

The eighth annual Newport Beach Wooden Boat Festival gets underway with an opening night preview Friday, with the main festivities taking place on Saturday for members of the public.

Event chairman Steve Paljieg said his committee has been working for the last nine months to expand the footprint of earlier iterations of the festival. Previously, while some owners would allow a few tours of their woodcraft, those attending would only be able to observe the boats from the Balboa Yacht Club. But this year will have additional options, according to Paljieg.

For example, visitors can bid on participating in a variety of experiences on the water, as some wooden boat owners have volunteered their vessels for a fundraiser in support of the festival’s goals of maritime education, preservation and recreation . Those experiences include cruises around the harbor or kayak expeditions, with starting bids for some items as low as $150 while others start at $4,000.

The bids will be accepted through Saturday evening at newportbeachwoodendboatfestival.com/silent-auction .

About 30 boats will be featured, and one of the largest — a replica of the America, a 139-foot-long racing yacht originally built in the 1800s — will travel into Newport Harbor from San Diego early Friday morning, Paljieg said. Cruises on the America will take place Saturday, with three time slots allotted, and it’s recommended that those interested aim for the morning slot, as the afternoon and evening cruises are expected to fill up by the time the festival starts.

“One of the boats we’ll have out was built for the actress Judy Garland and that’ll be coming down from the Los Angeles Yacht Club for people to take a look at,” Paljieg said.

“We’ve always got great boats,” he added. “This year, we have a theme, ‘The Art and Craft of the Wooden Boat.’ We’ve designed a lot of our on-land activity based on that theme.”

Local plein air artists will be set up to paint near the boats, and craftsmen involved in building the vessels will demonstrate their skills, showing how planks are bent and sails are created.

Paljieg said the festival will include guests from the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Washington state; woodworker David Lake, who specializes in kayaks; John Gregg, who restored the Western Flyer, on which author John Steinbeck sailed to the Sea of Cortez; and Will Sofrin, who restored a boat called the Rose, featured in the 2003 film “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.” Both Gregg and Sofrin will give lectures Saturday.

“These boats are going away,” Paljieg said. “That’s the hard reality of it. They are really intense to maintain and they’re expensive to maintain, and it’s honestly harder and harder to source great wooden boats to come to this festival. I don’t want people to feel like it’s a dying breed, but it kind of is. I can’t forecast and say in 10 years that they’ll all be gone, but we’ve seen a number of great vessels that have gone to time. We lost one to fire earlier this year from San Pedro that usually would come [to the festival], so people should see them now because they’re not going to be around forever.”

The festival is an opportunity for people to really see the love and dedication that goes into maintaining wood vessels, he said.

“I’m not knocking modern boats that are made … but there is ... a huge amount of soul, care and research that’s put into [wooden boats]. It’s amazing, if there’s a part that needs to be replaced, how far a boat owner will search for an authentic replacement or look for someone to replicate that part to preserve the authenticity of a boat that was made in the 1940s or 1950s,” he said.

One of the festival’s sponsors, Kaiser Permanente, will be present to offer skin cancer tests — a move that Paljieg said was in light the fact sailors often get a lot of sunlight exposure.

Tickets, priced at $15 for Saturday, can be purchased online, and admission is free for children ages 12 and under. The festival begins at 9 a.m.
