Midsomer Murders Tour of Locations

Read reviews

The Midsomer Murders tour offers fans a delightful 8 hour tour through the picturesque English countryside that serves as the backdrop for the iconic television series. This tour takes you through the idyllic villages, charming churches, and historic manors where the fictional crimes of Midsomer county unfold, blending the quaint beauty of rural England with a hint of mystery.

Starting in London you will head to the towns and villages of the deadly county of Midsomer which are actually situated across several English counties including Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

The tour includes a visit to the historic market town of Wallingford in Oxfordshire, which doubles as the fictional town of Causton, the heart of Midsomer. Here, you can visit the familiar sights from the series, such as the Corn Exchange and the Town Hall

The village of Warborough is another iconic location. Warborough’s church, The Church of St. Laurence, and its surrounding graveyard have been used in numerous episodes. The village green, complete with a traditional English pub, is another familiar sight where many community events (and crimes) in the series have taken place.

The tour also includes a visit to Dorchester-on-Thames, a picturesque village that appears in several episodes. Here, you can explore the Abbey Church of St Peter and St Paul, whose ancient, atmospheric interiors have provided the perfect setting for many a Midsomer mystery.

Lunch is held in Henley-on-Thames, where the River Thames adds a scenic backdrop to some of the more dramatic episodes. Walking along the riverbanks and through the charming town, you’ll recognize several spots where pivotal scenes were filmed.

You’ll be getting on and off the bus a number of times so you can take pictures of the pretty locations or crime scenes, depending on your point of view.

This tour not only immerses you in the world of Midsomer Murders but also provides a deeper appreciation for the stunning English countryside that brings the series to life. Whether you’re a devoted fan or simply love the charm of rural England, this journey through the real-life Midsomer is an unforgettable experience.

Thame – A Major Midsomer Filming Location

Thame is one of the most frequently used filming locations for the popular ITV series, Midsomer Murders . The town regularly features, either as Causton, or as any one of the many villages in the fictional Midsomer County. The series is still going strong in its 27th year 2024 with regular screenings, not only in the UK, but all over the world.  Many Thame landmarks have been featured in different episodes over this time, including Thame Town Hall, the Market House, Rumsey’s Chocolaterie , the historic Swan Hotel and the Spread Eagle Hotel , the Black Horse Pub & Brasserie , together with many other locations.

Fans of the detective series can pick up a free Midsomer Walking Tour leaflet from the Town Hall Information Centre or Thame Museum ( during opening hours – check the Thame Museum website ) and discover all of the deadly locations around the town. Lovers of DCI Barnaby can also have their photograph taken outside Causton Town Hall. Simply pop into the Town Hall Information Centre to pick up the Causton sign so you can feature it in your photo. You can also purchase a wide variety of Midsomer-themed books and gifts in the Information Centre.

A recent tour participant commented:

My friend and I are on the train back to London so I thought I’d take the opportunity to drop you an email to let you know how much we loved the tour. It was really interesting how it mixes real history with facts about the show, and what a beautiful town! Alan was a wonderful guide – very warm and considerate, and of course brimming with knowledge. The photo opportunity outside Causton Town Hall at the end was a particularly lovely touch. I will definitely be recommending it to any Midsomer Murders fans I know.

Midsomer Murders in Oxfordshire

Discover the various filming locations of the famous TV and book series Midsomer Murders; many of which were filmed in Oxfordshire.

Oxfordshire is an ideal place to follow in the footsteps of Inspector Barnaby of Causton CID, and fellow characters of the popular series, to explore Midsomer county; the home of traditional pubs, village greens, fetes and Sunday afternoon cricket. However, Midsomer is not as idyllic as it appears, as murder, kidnap and blackmail are all common crimes committed by the inhabitants of this fictional English county.

While many villages in Oxfordshire were featured in Midsomer Murders, five towns are particular favourites for the filming of the TV show. Henley-on-Thames , Wallingford , Dorchester-on-Thames, Thame and Watlington, are all home to a variety of different Midsomer Murder film locations, which can be explored with their very own Midsomer walking trails .

Henley-on-Thames :  In the episode, L ast Year’s Model , the Grade II listed Town Hall of Henley was used as the ‘Court House of Causton’. The Town Hall was also used as the ‘auction room’ in Black Book. Additionally, the Gabriel Machin butcher shop, which has existed in Henley since 1861, was featured in The Magician’s Nephew episode as a double for ‘Anton Thorneycroft’s butcher’. And the popular Royal Regatta, which takes place in Henley every year, became the Midsomer Regatta in Dead in the Water, which Barnaby and his wife visited for a picnic. Café Vinters, where Barnaby bought drinks in the Dawn Amongst the Dead Men is also located in Henley and was transformed into La Bodega, a restaurant and tapas bar.

Wallingford : Wallingford is the original location of Causton, home to main character Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby and a real-life location with trails designed to take in the filming locations around the town and neighbouring areas. Wallingford’s most recent appearance was in ‘Breaking the Chain’ which featured the town’s Festival of Cycling and aired in January 2016.

Dorchester-on-Thames:  Dorchester-on-Thames, is known as one of the prettiest Midsomer county villages and a great place to stay for an authentic Midsomer stay. Choose between three historic Inns, which were all featured in past episodes. Dorchester is also home to ‘ The house in the woods ’, known today as Abbey’s Museum, which was the place where Barnaby’s wife met with the conservation group.

Watlington:  To find the ‘ Causton library ’, you have to visit Watlington and its very own library. In addition, Watlington is home to Calnans, which represented Dorset’s Family Butchers in Judgement. In the same episode, the Grade II listed Town Hall at the top of the High Street was used for the scene in which Joyce Barnaby is a judge in the Perfect Village Competition.

Thame : Thame has featured in many episodes and there are over 20 filming locations in the town centre. Notable among these are Thame Town Hall, used as Causton Town Hall in Shot at Dawn , Not in My Backyard , and Days of Misrule , and as Causton Arts Centre in The Maid in Splendour . Buttermarket was used in Vixen’s Run, Picture of Innocence, Midsomer Life and Dead in the Water . Market House was used in Vixen’s Run and Midsomer Life . Rumsey’s Chocolaterie (8 Upper High Street) was used extensively in Picture of Innocence as Madrigal’s Camera Shop. The Black Horse (11 Cornmarket) featured in Neil Dudgeon’s first episode, Death in the Slow Lane . The Spread Eagle and The Swan Hotels (Cornmarket) were used in Vixen’s Run and The Spread Eagle was also used as The Morecroft Hotel in Midsomer Life . Thame Museum was used in Secrets and Spies .

Pubs visited by Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby

  • The Argyll , a 17th-century pub, was visited by Barnaby & Jones to meet clinical psychiatrist Pru Plunkett.
  • The Six Bells , a 16th-century pub was frequently featured as the ‘Black Swan’.
  • The Black Horse , a 17th-century pub, was used in ‘Death in the Slow Lane’, the first episode featuring Neil Dudgeon as DCI Barnaby

Full description.

Midsomer Murders Tour / Turville

Take a trip through some of England’s most verdant villages.

Leaving from London , this tour will guide you through several English counties, including Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire . These have been the filming locations for Midsomer Murders for more than two decades. Their relaxed and idyllic atmospheres work in stark contrast to the high-drama storylines of the TV series.

One of the main attractions on the  Midsomer Murders Locations Tour from London is Wallingford . This Oxfordshire town on the banks of the Thames regularly features as Causton , the home of DCI Barnaby . Diehard fans should recognise the Wallingford streets and buildings. You might even see a few familiar faces, as the locals often work as extras in the production.

But Wallingford can’t lay claim to all of the Causton glory. The town of Thame also lends a few of its buildings to the fictional village. Most notable is the Thame town hall , a regular Causton filming location.

Another regular filming location throughout the years has been Mapledurham House . The estate has represented many different locations in many different episodes. Most recently it featured as a health spa. Needless to say, it has also been the setting of many mystery killings.

Midsomer Murders Tour / Hambledon

Another hub of murderous activity over the years has been Turville , a village in Buckinghamshire. But Midsomer Murders is not Turville’s only claim to fame. It has featured in many small and big-screen productions. You’ll be sure to recognise some of its settings from the Vicar of Dibley, Goodnight Mr. Tom , and even Chitty Chitty Bang Bang .

Other rural locations used in the TV show include Warbourough, Dorchester-on-Thames, the Chilterns, and more. Whether it’s historic architecture, thatched-roof pubs, or just rolling green hills, each offers a unique backdrop. Throughout the tour, your guide will be sure to point out all of the notable scenes shot in these areas . They’ll also provide you with some anecdotes from behind the scenes , revealing some of the mysteries behind this long-running whodunnit!

Recognisable by many Midsomer Murders fans, The Stag and Huntsman is located in the beautiful village of Hambleden.

The Stag and Huntsman has long been established in the village, changing its name in 1820 from the Dog and Badger. The pub’s ethos is to be quirky rather than quaint and to offer high quality at affordable prices. This combined with its family and dog friendly nature means that this is a must visit if you are in the Chilterns. As well as offering food, The Stag and Huntsman also offer accommodation. The individually designed rooms offer an extra luxury to your visit and provide you with a fantastic central point from which to explore the area.

Fans of the DCI Barnabys will know that this popular television drama takes place in one of the most picturesque corners of England, the fictional county of Midsomer. • The traditional market town of Wallingford, the original 'Causton', with its 9th Century streets, half-cobbled square and Elizabethan town hall. The first ever episode was filmed here. The local theatre doubles as Causton theatre and Barnaby is often seen walking in the Market Place or driving across Wallingford Bridge.
  • Dorchester-on-Thames, one of the prettiest Midsomer villages, where the medieval Abbey church, coaching inns and post office are all locations.
  • Thame, often used as a general backdrop, to see the Town Hall which appears as Causton Town Hall, plus a local hotel and tea room which also feature in the series.
  • Stonor House, one of the oldest manor houses in England.
  • Historic Mapledurham House and Watermill, now the only working watermill on the Thames, where visitors can enjoy a traditional cream tea made with flour from the watermill. Filming has taken place here twice recently.
