Jenny Peters

LAST UPDATED BY Jenny Peters November 19, 2021

After a pandemic year that shut down the usually sunny and warm holiday season in Los Angeles, Angelenos and visitors from around the world are really ready to celebrate in 2021. Live events are back this holiday season, so whether it's Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's, the Winter Solstice or some combination of them all that you celebrate, there's something for everyone to enjoy in the Southland. Mickey and Minnie go all out at Disneyland, Harry Potter and the Grinch transform Universal Studios into a holiday haven, parades abound and ice skating rinks pop up, too. Los Angeles is famous for its New Year's extravaganza, as the 133rd  Tournament of Roses Parade  will be televised all over the United States. Visiting SoCal for the holidays means you can go to the parade in person, but to get good viewing spots, you'll need to join the throngs camping out along the parade route the night before, or splurge and buy seats to watch the parade live. The annual Hollywood Christmas Parade brings out Santa and the stars, too; and you'll find the ultimate holiday adventure in Santa Monica complete with shows, shopping and Santa Claus. Just don't expect any real snow!

Tournament of Roses Rose Bowl Parade

Tournament of Roses Rose Bowl Parade

The 133rd Tournament of Roses Rose Parade kicks off on January 1, 2021, at 8 a.m., traveling 5.5 miles along Orange Grove Boulevard and Colorado Avenue in Pasadena. Presented by Honda, and themed "Dream. Believe. Achieve.," there will be around 40 floats, as well as numerous marching bands, horse-drawn carriages and more. LeVar Burton is this year's Tournament of Roses Parade Grand Marshal. Admission is free along the parade route, with people camping out the night before to get prime spots on the sidewalk. Tickets may be purchased for various grandstands, ranging in price from $60 to $110, depending on the spot along the route. The festivities conclude by 1 p.m. when the Rose Bowl college football game begins.

Things to do in Los Angeles in December

How to Have Fun in Los Angeles in December

Last Modified: August 3, 2023 //  by  Anda //   20 Comments

Southern California is one of the best places to visit during the winter months. With daytime temperatures in the upper 70s, winter will be the last thing on your mind at this time of year. But even though it’s not cold outside, L.A. surely dresses up for the Holidays and puts on a real show in December. So if you happen to be in town at this time of year, here are some fun things to do in Los Angeles in December:

Table of Contents

1. Visit the L.A. Auto Show

2. attend a christmas concerts at walt disney concert hall, 3. experience the enchanted forest of light show at descanso gardens, 4. enjoy the newport beach boat parade and ring of lights, 5. surf and ski in the same day in l.a., 6. enjoy a queen mary christmas, 7. drive down the most festive street in los angeles, 8. watch the hollywood christmas parade, 9. visit the unique l.a. holiday market, 10. experience the tournament of roses rose parade, 11. ice skate at the l.a. kings holiday ice rink, fun things to do in los angeles in december.

One of my favorite things to do in Los Angeles in December is attend the L.A. Auto Show. The show is an annual event that takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in early December.

attending the Auto Show is one of the fun things to do in Los Angeles in December

The event is open to the public for ten days each year, filling 760,000 square feet (71,000 m 2 ) of exhibit space. Whether you love admiring the newest makes and models, or are simply looking to upgrade your ride, this is the place for you!

The Los Angeles Auto Show is perfectly designed and organized and it promises to capture the interest of every visitor.  Even of those who believe they are not-so-much-into-cars (like me).

visiting the L.A. Auto Show

I was completely taken by the multitude of cars, the variety of models, and makes, some of which were so fancy and luxurious. It’s amazing how much progress the automotive industry has made in such a short time.

Another fun thing to do in downtown Los Angeles in December is attend one of the many outstanding Christmas Concerts. Among the most beloved musical events in December are the numerous Christmas Concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

From internationally acclaimed groups like the Canadian Brass, or Chanticleer, to local celebrities like the LA Master Chorale, or the A Philharmonic Orchestra, you will be delighted with the most outstanding music.

attending a Holiday concert at Walt Disney Hall

And if you have never visited Walt Disney Concert Hall –a truly architectural marvel– now is the best time to test its perfect acoustics.

If you visited Los Angeles but have never heard of the beautiful Descanso Gardens in La Cañada-Flintridge don’t feel bad. Many Angelenos didn’t hear about it either, although it’s one of Southern California most beautiful gardens.

visit la in december

In a way that’s understandable, since getting there from Downtown L.A. requires driving through a confusing combination of freeways. But if you happen to be in L.A. in December, make sure you attending the light show at Descanso Gardens.

Every evening starting November 20  through January 8, Descanso lights up with a beautiful holiday light display called  Enchanted Forest of Light . The light show features several interactive displays which let you manipulate lights and sounds in the garden.

Christmas parades are always fun to watch. They kick off the holiday season and put everybody in a festive, holiday mood. How about a parade that instead of floats on the street has boats on the water and fireworks?

visit la in december

Every year for 5 days in December Newport Bay is richly illuminated with millions of lights and hundreds of themed estates. This isone of the largest decorated boat parades in the country!

Hundreds of decorated ships of all sizes compete for top awards in different categories.

attending the Newport Beach parade Los Angeles in December

The 109 year old tradition is watched by over 1.5 million people each year and is one of the largest boat parades you will likely ever see. Millions of holiday lights are a part of the Newport Beach Boat Parade and Ring Of Lights decorations making Newport Bay a “must see” for the holiday season.

I’ll let you in on a little secret that only Angelenos know. One of the most fun and cheap things to do around Los Angeles in December is ski in the morning and surf in the afternoon. Not many cities in the world can brag about this.

skiers in Big Bear near Los Angeles in December

Skiing in the morning and sunbathing in the afternoon at Santa Monica is one of our most beloved Christmas traditions .

The closest ski resort from Downtown L.A. is Mount Baldy, an easy  55 minute drive  ( 46.9 mi ) via CA-60 E. There is also Big Bear, a much bigger resort in the San Bernardino Mountains, about 2.5 hours from Los Angeles.  In fact if you are spending more than just a few days in L.A , you should take time to visit Big Bear. It’s one of the nicest weekend getaways from Los Angeles.

sunny beach in Los Angeles in December

The closest beach from Downtown L.A. is Malibu, a straight 42 minute drive  ( 32.8 mi ) on I-10 W and CA-1 N. Although the water is too cold for swimming in December, the air temperature is always pleasant for sunbathing.

The legendary Queen Mary Ship which is now permanently stationed in the Long Beach port invites everyone to embrace the holiday spirit at the Queen Mary Christmas in December. This legendary ship is one of the biggest attractions in Los Angeles , so don’t miss it.

What you can expect? There is ice skating at the outdoor North Pole Village, then you can jump aboard the QM Express Train, enjoy the strolling performers, or watch some live entertainment aboard the Queen Mary.

Things to do in Los Angeles in December: enjoy a Queen Mary Christmas

Aboard the ship you’ll find Old Saint Nick greeting people and Mrs. Claus reading stories to the kids. There is also a 4-D Theater aboard where you can watch Christmas movies like The Polar Express and others. It’s a truly magical experience!

Temperature wise, it may not feel a lot like Christmas in Los Angeles in December. But when it come to the Holiday spirit and Christmas decorations, there is no place like L.A.

Driving on Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena

If in summer we are used to driving down streets lined with Palm trees, in December we drive down streets filled with lights and Christmas decorations. And the most festive one of all is Altadena’s Christmas Tree Lane.

TOURS WE RECOMMEND:

The Hollywood Christmas Parade marks is quite the extravaganza that you shouldn’t miss if you happen to be in Los Angeles in December. The parade takes place December 1 and winds its way from Hollywood Boulevard (right at the Chinese Theatre) all the way to Vine Street.

watching the Hollywood Christmas Parade

There is live music, marching bands and a huge array of famous characters and floats. And of course, you will also see Santa Claus!

This December skip the Mall and shop at the Unique L.A. Holiday Market where more than 150 local small businesses and independent artists will share clothing, jewelry, apothecary items and other gifts. The Market will be held Saturday and Sunday, December 10 and 11, at the  California Market Center in downtown Los Angeles .

LA Holiday Market

The organizers promise the “Best shopping experience in LA!” Besides shopping from the best up-and-coming designers, artists & brands, you’ll also get free drinks, DIY projects, food, and DJs!

General Admission is $15/person and includes a brand new nylon tote (worth $12), free drinks + bar. VIP Admission is $50/person which includes a cozy winter VIP bag, a set of merino wool coasters, a chic enamel mug, and another surprise gift – plus a brand-new nylon tote bag (worth $12). All Weekend Pass costs $20/person and allows you to visit the market on both days (Saturday & Sunday).

The famous Tournament of Roses Rose Parade actually kicks off on January 1, but we can still consider it as part of the best things to do in L.A. in December.

Pasadena Rose Parade

The parade takes place in Pasadena, along Orange Grove Boulevard and Colorado Avenue. The Rose Ball Parade, which is nationally televised on New Year’s Day, is an extravagant display of floats that are constructed with thousands of flowers, roses and other beautiful blossoms.

All the big local companies and business are represented in the parade, like Honda, Bank of America, etc. Beside the floats, there are numerous marching bands, horse-drawn carriages and more.

One of the most fun things to do in Los Angeles in December is ice skate. So where can you do it? The LA Kings professional hockey team presents an annual outdoor ice skating rink in downtown Los Angeles, right next to Staples Center, where the team plays.

Ice skating in Los Angeles

Kids and adults alike can ice skate in the pop-up rink, operating is open between November 30 to January 12, including Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day as well. If you want to skip the line, you can purchase a Fast Pass online and be the first to get to skate.

LA is definitely going on my bucket list. Thank you for sharing this. The pictures that you have included are simply mind-blowing. Especially the one of Disney Concert Hall and Auto show.

December 25, 2017 at 7:41 am

These are some awesome and fun suggestions, Anda. The Descanso Gardens seem so breathtaking. I have to add them to my bucket list!

December 24, 2017 at 4:59 am

A trip to LA in the winter would be too perfect for me – it’d let me get away from the bitter cold of the Midwest and also let me enjoy LA without it being too hot. LA’s Christmas decorations would probably spoil Christmas decorations as a whole for me forever. The ones around here surely can’t even compare to what they do over there.

December 16, 2017 at 11:21 pm

I would love some warm weather right about now. I would have no issues with a warm December. It would be nice to go to the beach even if the water is too cold to swim in. I would also love to see that boat parade it looks really neat.

Anda Galffy

December 17, 2017 at 12:34 am

I believe you, Anisa. I don’t miss cold weather too much either, but around Christmas I would enjoy a little snow.

December 16, 2017 at 10:59 pm

I am not inclined to go to the Auto Show but I have heard it is great. My husband has been with friends and, of course, he cannot stop talking when he comes home after the event. I may go one day. The Descanso Gardens light are pretty and I would like to stop by.

December 17, 2017 at 12:35 am

Descanso Gardens light show sells out pretty quickly every year. If you plan to go, you should look into it at the beginning of December.

December 16, 2017 at 12:25 pm

Anda, I love the ski and surf idea! It is truly unique! Although I can skip skiing easily! I much prefer the beach:)

December 16, 2017 at 2:58 pm

Yea, I hear you, Victoria. Living in Boston, you probably don’t miss snow too much.

December 16, 2017 at 12:03 am

That enchanted forest of light looks like a lot of fun! It’s funny when I tell people on Christmas you can go to the beach, but if you want snow, you only need to drive 2 hours away (to Julian, for me)! People don’t imagine that California can also have snow!

December 16, 2017 at 2:59 pm

Yea, I know, Lolo. It’s hard to imagine that only two hours away from the sunny beaches of LA there is snow.

December 15, 2017 at 11:41 pm

How wonderful that you can visit both the snow ánd the beach from LA!! Excellent. I hope not too many will be affected by the aftermath of the forest fires, so they can have relaxing holidays!

We have had our first few days of heatwave already this year. Having spent almost every Christmas of my life in Sydney, Australia I couldn’t imagine a cold Christmas so i think I would fit in quite well with a warm LA festive season.

December 15, 2017 at 7:36 pm

I was born and raised in Europe, where Christmas is usually “white”. I kind of miss the snow at this time of year…

December 15, 2017 at 12:55 pm

I’ve been to LA once, but in mid summer. Your photos make it look very pretty in the winter. I never knew that inhabitants of LA were referred to as Angelenos – now I do 🙂

December 15, 2017 at 7:37 pm

LA is way more beautiful in winter, Upeksha. There is no smog and no heat, just perfect.

Rhonda Albom

December 14, 2017 at 12:28 pm

Wow, It looks like winter down under! I know LA doesn’t get cold in the winter but your photos have it looking like outright summer. I can’t imagine that there is a lot of ice at Santa Monica 🙂 .

December 14, 2017 at 10:13 pm

To be honest, Rhonda, I love it when it sunny and warm like that. I miss a little cold and snow only around Christmas, but other than that let the sun shine!

December 14, 2017 at 8:27 am

A Christmas Concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall would be a must for me. I love the orchestra and classical music – all these Christmas songs in real life: it simply creates the holiday mood right away! I´ve never heard of the Descanso gardens though – will make sure not to miss them when in LA next time.

December 14, 2017 at 10:14 pm

Descanso in quite beautiful in summer too, but at this time of year it’s magical. Thanks for dropping by.

best things to do in LA in December

December is always a busy month, and there are always a ton of demands on our time. We’re rushing here, rushing there, as well as trying to do all the Christmas shopping, get all the food, do the social rounds etc. Maybe you’re looking for something different to do with friends or family, maybe you want to escape the treadmill for a few hours and do something worthwhile, something fun, with that special person. If you only had time to spend doing all the necessary research… Well, you don’t need to waste any time! We’ve done it for you and distilled the infinite number of possibilities that are out there, down to this list of the 10 best things to do in LA in December. Have fun, stay safe and see you next year!

Events & Activities in Los Angeles This Month

1. the nutcracker (december 1-26).

What could be more Christmassy than going to see this Yuletide staple, presented by the Los Angeles Ballet? What’s more, there are several performances at the magnificent Dolby Theatre. That’s right – where the annual Academy Awards – AKA the Oscars – are held. It’s actually a great venue for ballet too, as it has a huge stage and plenty of room for a seventy-piece orchestra. It also has great acoustics and sight-lines too.

More information here .

2. THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER (ALL MONTH)

What can we say about the little chap that hasn’t already been said. Many times. But surely the world of Harry Potter is perfectly attuned to Christmas. Universal have broken out immersive rides such as Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff for the holidays, as well as offering interactive wands for young wizards.

3. CHECK OUT THE GROUNDLINGS (DATES THROUGH DECEMBER)

The Groundlings is a breeding ground for comic talent that often ends up becoming famous, alumni include Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte, to name just two. Their theatre in Hollywood has performances almost every night in December, and the sketch comedy shows are always very funny. Not to mention reasonably priced too, especially for LA. You may even see some well-known faces in the audience, Jennifer Aniston was in the audience one night I went.

4. CATCH A SHOW (ALL MONTH)

The Hollywood Pantages Theatre, on Hollywood and Vine, has a couple of Christmas-appropriate shows appearing on its stage in December. Dr Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and Mamma Mia! Either one could be one of the best things to do in LA in December. Why not have dinner on the boulevard, either at Musso and Frank Grill , Yamashiro or Palms Thai , and see a show?

5. TIME-TRAVEL BACK TO GOLDEN AGE HOLLYWOOD (EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT)

Who isn’t, on some level at least, fascinated with ‘the dream factory’? Who wouldn’t want to be a 1930’s movie-star? Getting chauffeured from your Santa Monica beach house to the studio lot around 10 am, wrapping on your close-ups by lunch, and then, after a short siesta, going to the premiere of your new movie in the evening. To be followed by the after-party, which is at the glamorous Cocoanut Grove Nightclub, of course.

Well, join us for the evening as we take you back to those halcyon days on our Hollywood Speakeasy Bar tour. We’ll show you around a variety of speakeasies, roof-top bars and classic movie-star hangouts on our nighttime adventure. Cocktails are recommended, but not obligatory.

6. WATCH HOME ALONE LIVE AT THE WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL (DECEMBER 20-22)

A true holiday favorite, this beloved comedy classic features renowned composer John Williams’ charming and delightful score performed live to picture, conducted by David Newman. Macaulay Culkin stars as Kevin McCallister, an 8-year-old boy who’s accidentally left behind when his family leaves for Christmas vacation, and who must defend his home against two bungling thieves. Hilarious and heart-warming,  Home Alone  is holiday fun for the entire family! Music Center

7. CYCLAVIA: SOUTH LA (DECEMBER 3)

CicLAvia is without doubt one of the best things to happen to Los Angeles since 2010. When whole neighborhoods, which had been lost to pedestrians and cyclists and taken over by motor vehicles, are periodically reclaimed by banning said vehicles, it’s amazing what can happen. People walking, cycling and having fun in a much cleaner environment. Suddenly Los Angeles feels like a very different place and we can truly realize that actually LA  wasn’t designed around the car, in spite of what many people think.

8. SANTA MONICA PUB CRAWL (DECEMBER 16)

Did someone say pub crawl? Then sign me up! Part of the joy of Christmas is the sense that it’s allowed – and even encouraged – to have just a  little  too much to drink… Only to get into the spirit of the season of course. And when you combine that with a pub crawl, well, you’re getting some exercise too.

Santa Monica must be the perfect place to have a pub crawl (the other is downtown), since there are so many great bars within walking distance of each other. This event is even raising money for good causes, with proceeds going towards the Westside Food Bank.

9. LA COUNTY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION (DECEMBER 24)

This is a really fantastic, FREE, annual event, that’s held at the Music Center in downtown. All kinds of performers and artists are appearing, from Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, to Reverb Tap Company, to the Los Angeles Gay Men’s Choir, to South Side Symphony. There’s something for everyone in the program, which runs from 3-6 pm.

10. GO TO A COMEDY SHOW (DATES THROUGH DECEMBER)

The Christmas Holidays are definitely the right time to do this! Who doesn’t want to laugh until they cry at least once a year – it’s therapeutic.

Hollywood Improv  has a full slate of shows in December and  The Comedy Store  on the Sunset Strip nearly always has a great line-up of established and up-and-coming comedians.

Or how about  Don’t Tell Comedy ? They feature pop-up standup shows at “secret” venues, including parking lots and rooftops around Los Angeles.

  • Los Angeles In December: 10 Experiences To Witness The Magical Side Of The City!

23 Mar 2023

If you’re thinking of going to LA in December, be rest assured that all the major tourist attractions will be packed. Theme parks are sure to be busier than ever, and even museums are full of people. LA usually gets 10 hours of daylight every day, so extract all the fun out while making sure you don’t freeze yourself off. Hardships aside, there are still a plethora of things and activities to keep you busy during the winter.

Keeping all the haze and confusion aside, LA can be a pretty great place to spend the month of December at, whether you choose to snuggle up under cozy blankets, with your loved ones by you, or you choose to relax in a lounge at an Oceanside rooftop bar with a cocktail by you.

Top 10 Things To Do In Los Angeles In December

Here’s a list of 10 things to do in Los Angeles during December to have a soul-filling experience and take memories home that you will cherish forever!

1. Wade through a deserted Disneyland

Deserted Disneyland

You would expect the least amount of resistance in the crowd during the Winter Weekdays if you choose to visit Disneyland at LA during December. The vibe you experience is truly magical as you navigate your ways through a park devoid of people, as you stroll right into the Splash Mountain, which, fair warning, can be just as wet in the winter. One con would be that some of the rides can be un-operational for refurbishment, but there are plenty of others to compensate.

3. Detoxify with a hard-earned vacation

As a tourist, your primary priority should be to explore your destination to the best of your abilities, and the inclusion of snow-covered mountaintops should be an added blessing. One of the most fun things about LA is that you can never scrape off enough snow from your windshield and can at the same time always expect to slip carelessly on a random sidewalk over heaps of snow. Baldy for an icy escape, situated within an hour’s traveling distance from the city. Or you can always go old school with having snowball fights with your friends and family, and you’ll find suitable locations near Newcomb’s Ranch for your endeavors.

Beachside temperatures usually touch a comfortable 20 degrees, which is cold enough to keep passionate tourists away but warm enough to let loose under a comfortable sweatshirt. Los Angeles in Winter: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

Winter can be a great time to visit Los Angeles, and depending on the weather, you might luck into some great beach days too.

The Weather

Winter daytime temperatures tend to reach the mid-60s, but only for a few minutes, rather than all day. During the summer, the beaches are cooler, and inland areas hotter, but in the winter, this is usually reversed, with colder temperatures inland, and the beach staying temperate. The winter rainy season is from November through March or April, with most rainy days in January and February. There are usually a couple heat waves during an average LA winter, bringing summer-like temperatures. The city has also had weather in the 80s and 90s in January  and February, so it's pretty unpredictable.

The Pacific Ocean: The water off the coast of Southern California is cool to cold all year long, maybe reaching 70 in a really hot summer. Surfers have thicker winter wetsuits and thinner summer wetsuits. Even if the temperatures are in the 80s during a given week in winter, the water will still be cold. There are no lifeguards on duty in the winter.

What to Pack

What to pack for a winter visit to  Los Angeles  depends on what you plan to do while you're here. If your budget doesn't include high-end restaurants and nightclubs, you can get by just about anywhere in LA, including  the theatre , in jeans and casual shirts. Layers are your best bet to go from cold mornings to sunny warm afternoons and nights that can get close to freezing. Fleece is always good.  Despite the rumor that nobody walks in LA, it's a good idea to pack a  comfortable pair of walking shoes  for exploring the city, shopping or visiting theme parks or doing a little hiking. If you're a shopper, pack light and plan to spend some time shopping in LA .

Things to Do

  • Outdoor Ice Skating in LA:  Outdoor ice skating is all the rage in LA these days, despite the relatively warm weather. Rinks start opening in October and most stay open into January with at least one lasting through February. Find out where to go outdoor ice skating in Los Angeles .
  • Skiing, Snowboarding and Snowshoeing Near Los Angeles:  Los Angeles is the perfect destination if you want to combine fun at the beach with fun in the mountains. You can go from surfing the waves to skiing the nearby slopes in about an hour and a half. Check out all the places to go skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing near Los Angeles .

Travel Tips

  • Crowds are typically gone at this time, and lines are much shorter at amusement parks. However, theme parks may have shorter hours or limited days to close some rides for maintenance.
  • It's typically easier to get tickets to popular shows and possibly at lower prices.
  • Hotel rates are also often half their summer price.

  • Miracle Mile Until Apr 30, 2025

It’s more than just the low clearance: This exhibition at the Petersen explores the custom paint, engraving, upholstery and, of course, the gravity-defying suspension of the lowrider scene. In addition to iconic cars, the exhibit spotlights influential artists in the Chicano lowrider art scene. Even if you have no interest in cars, this colorful showcase of 20-plus lowered cars and bikes is excellent: The candy-colored paint jobs are dazzling, and the craftsmanship of the customizations—many vehicles are on display with their engines and undercarriages visible—is remarkable. You’ll learn a little bit of history here, how the “low and slow” movement is rooted in the postwar Mexican American zoot suit counterculture, but largely this is an excuse to ogle some L.A. automotive icons.

CicLAvia

  • Until Dec 8, 2024

The term CicLAvia stems from a similar Spanish word for “bike way,” and in L.A. it’s become a shorthand for the temporary, festival-like closing of L.A.’s streets. The event (inspired by the first Ciclovías in Bogotá, Colombia) welcomes bikes, tricycles, skateboards, strollers and basically anything else without an engine to ride a rotating cast of car-free routes. You’ll inevitably always find a route each year around Downtown, but past events have taken it anywhere from the harbor to the San Gabriel Valley. Expect music, street performances and food trucks, as well as general whimsy and shenanigans along the way. Shop owners and restaurants along the CicLAvia route also tend to host specials. It goes without saying that you should bike or take the Metro to your desired spot along the route.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish

  • Inglewood Dec 15 Dec 17, 2024

Out of context samples from The Office, horror movie-inspired music videos and the slurping sounds of an Invisalign being removed may not seem like the makings of a pop jugernaut, but L.A. local Billie Eilish has become a free-spirited icon of her generation.

Wicked

  • Hollywood Dec 4, 2024 Feb 2, 2025

Forget Dorothy and her ruby slippers—head to Oz for the story of Elphaba and Glinda. Follow the Wicked cast down a different yellow brick road for a beautiful tale of friendship, love and courage. The ever “Popular” show returns to the Pantages to expose the back story of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. You don’t even have to paint your skin green, just belt out “Defying Gravity” and “Something Bad” to fit in here. Wicked and its “Wonderful” set will inevitably win over your heart, and change your perspective on Emerald City “For Good.”

Aerosmith

The Best Things to Do in LA in December

Decorated Christmas tree in Greater Los Angeles

Just because SoCal doesn’t have the traditional “white Christmas” doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of holiday spirit to enjoy throughout the Greater LA area.

From the world’s best destinations for holiday shopping to some of the most impressive lights displays in the region, here are some top things to do in LA in December.

Fantastic Outdoor Light Displays in Greater LA

Sleepy Hollow Holiday Lights Extravaganza in Torrance near LA

There are plenty of neighborhoods in LA that celebrate the holidays by decking out every visible surface in an impressive array of lights. While this list is subject to change depending on ever-changing city-wide restrictions, there are a few local favorites you shouldn’t miss:

  • Christmas Tree Lane (Santa Rosa Avenue, between Woodbury Ave and Altadena Drive in Altadena)
  • The famous Venice Canals
  • The “Sleepy Hollow Christmas Lights Extravaganza” in Torrance
  • Upper Hastings Ranch in Pasadena

LA’s Enormous Christmas Trees

There are plenty of places to check out LA’s most impressive tree displays. You can visit all of them for a DIY Christmas tree tour. Here’s where to go:

  • Americana at Brand
  • The Manhattan Beach Pier
  • Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade
  • Multiple spots around DTLA

Snow in the Angeles National Forest

visit la in december

For an authentic “white winter” experience, take a day trip up to the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. The preserved land encompasses parts of the Angeles National Forest and the San Bernardino National Forest.

Up in this higher elevation, there’s plenty of snow during the winter months to play in. It’s just 90 minutes outside downtown LA but feels a world away.

Local tip: For this trip, make sure to use a safe, snow-equipped car to drive on the icy mountain roads, and be respectful of local restrictions and travel recommendations since many of the mountain communities are smaller and can be more vulnerable to the spread of COVID-19. As with any trip outside the home, wear a mask.

LA’s Best Warm Mocha and Hot Chocolate

visit la in december

Los Angeles is a mecca for good coffee — which means the opportunity to enjoy a great hot chocolate on a chilly day (which for Angelenos, is anything under 60 degrees). Popular choices for a soul-warming treat would be ChocoVivo, a specialty chocolate shop in the Culver City neighborhood, or the famed Alfred Coffee & Kitchen for a handmade mocha.

Shopping at LA’s Decorated Malls

visit la in december

Los Angeles is a global capital for shopping opportunities. Many of these malls are outdoors so you can enjoy the sunny December weather while you shop for everyone on your Christmas list. There are so many places you could go for holiday shopping, but these are some of the most popular, thanks to their festive decor and wide selection of stores:

  • Hollywood & Highland (also home to the TCL Chinese Theatre )
  • Westfield Century City
  • Santa Monica Place (right by the Santa Monica Pier )
  • Newport’s Fashion Island,

“Visions of Holiday Glamour” in Beverly Hills

visit la in december

The City of Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive Committee are debuting a new community outdoor holiday display this season, “Visions of Holiday Glamour.”

They plan to spread festive cheer with a Fashion Week-inspired runway spanning the entire center median from Santa Monica to Wilshire Boulevards. The runway will display festive mannequins dressed in glamorous holiday outfits fashioned from faux winter foliage, florals, and metallic ornaments.

Meanwhile, the 200 block of Rodeo Drive will embrace Hanukkah with a mannequin adorned by faux flowers and ornaments in hues of blue and silver. The famed palm trees in the center of Rodeo Drive will be embellished with dripping lights to mimic falling snowflakes.

When to go: “Visions of Holiday Glamour” will run Nov. 21, 2020, through Jan. 3, 2021.

Catalina Island’s Enormous Gingerbread House

Each year, Avalon builds a larger-than-life, Catalina-Island-themed gingerbread house. Past creations have included a gingerbread Catalina Casino and a gingerbread Catalina Chimes Tower. This year they will be creating a gingerbread zip line.

When to go: The gingerbread masterpiece will be on display in the Shops at the Atwater Dec. 4-26 this year.

Christmas Lights at the Inn

Each year, Riverside’s Mission Inn Hotel & Spa is covered in more than 4.5 million twinkly lights.

“Christmas Lights at the Inn,” a free six-week-long holiday tradition, begins the day after Thanksgiving and runs into January.

COVID-19 note: For the 2020 version of this event running Nov. 27 through Jan. 6, there won’t be an official “switching on” ceremony, and visitors must be either hotel guests or restaurant patrons in order to stroll the main walkway and admire the lights up close.

Best Times To Visit Los Angeles

The best times to visit Los Angeles are from March to May and between September and November, when the air is more breathable and the crowds are less oppressive. Average temperatures during these months range from the low 50s to the low 80s, which makes walking around and visiting outdoor attractions much more comfortable. During the summer, average highs soar into the mid-80s; the heat coupled with heavy smog levels often drive visitors and residents alike to the already crowded oceanside  neighborhoods . If you're looking for deals, consider a winter trip. Just make sure to pack an umbrella, since you're bound to encounter a little rainfall in January and February.

The 12 Best Places to Travel in December

By Caitlin Morton

Santiago Chile

When thinking about the best places to travel in December, you may be tempted to view the month through the lens of Christmas—which is understandable, given the wealth of cities that go all out for the holidays . And while we’re always down for a European Christmas market or dazzling lights display, there are plenty of reasons to travel this month outside of the holly and the jolly.

Whether you want to get a jumpstart on ski season or escape the winter doldrums in the Caribbean, here are the 12 best places to travel in December.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Miami

Miami, Florida

Many people head to Miami in early December for Art Basel Miami Beach , a glittering, four-day confab (scheduled for December 8–10 in 2023) that lures both the fashion and art worlds. The lineup of artists includes 24 first-time participants (out of 277 total) hailing everywhere from New York to Seoul, plus several guest lectures and dining experiences.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Miami beyond the final moments of Art Basel, of course—namely a booming high-end hotel scene. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is an art destination in and of itself, with geometric metal walls and massive sculptures hanging from the lobby ceiling. Other luxurious amenities, like private butlers and a gourmet burger bar, make this the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. For a beachier (but just as luxurious) stay, head to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne , located about 15 miles from South Beach. Its ocean views and tequila-stocked restaurant are great any time of year, but this December welcomes a slew of holiday-themed perks, like eggnog in the lobby and peppermint pedicures in the spa.

Yellowstone in winter

Yellowstone National Park

If you haven’t visited Yellowstone in the dead of winter, you are missing out on one of the most incredible travel experiences out there. Not only will you escape the typical summer hoards that make it nearly impossible to see wildlife and popular sites like Old Faithful—starting in December, the park is closed to cars and will only allow snowcoaches and snowmobiles to enter—but the relative quiet and icy chills of winter make our oldest national park feel even more like a mystical wonderland. Just imagine: sleepy bison with snow-dusted beards, bright blue pools set against a blanket of white, and boardwalks billowing with steam from the surrounding thermal features.

There are only a couple of in-park lodges open in the winter, but luckily they are incredibly cozy and convenient. Located in the heart of Yellowstone, Old Faithful Snow Lodge will get an extra dose of holiday magic this December, with trees set up throughout the hotel, in-room Christmas sweets, cookie decorating stations, and visits from Santa. Guests can also book several outdoor excursions from the lodge, ranging from guided snowshoe tours to wildlife photo safaris.

Azores

The Azores, Portugal

This once-overlooked archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic is tailor-made for adventurers—think whale watching, hiking calderas, and rappelling down waterfalls. (The island of Terceira is home to the only volcano in the world where visitors can explore a chimney and secondary magma chamber, sitting side by side.) And while tourism has caught up to the Azores within the past decade, visiting during the winter gives you a glimpse of what Eden once looked like.

December isn’t chilly here, despite the archipelago’s Atlantic location—the Gulf Stream keeps the year-round temperatures surprisingly balmy, with the mercury rarely dropping below 60 degrees or so. The island of Santa Maria generally boasts the warmest climate, though swimming may be off the table in the winter. If you’re craving water time, pay a visit to a geothermally heated hot spring instead.

Best Places to Travel in December Salzburg at Christmas

Salzburg, Austria

Germany tends to get most of the attention when it comes to Christmas markets (for good reason), but neighboring Austria can be just as festive and charming—especially in the city of Salzburg. It’s not a surprise that the UNESCO World Heritage -listed Old City, which served as the backdrop for The Sound of Music, also fills its famed Christkindlmarkt with song.

With roots dating back to the 15th century, the market’s sing-alongs and traditional wind music are as much a part of the festivities as the mulled wine and stands selling ornaments and fluffy socks. We’re not mad about the bauernkrapfen (fried pastries), either. The market earns extra points for being just steps away from Hotel Goldener Hirsch , one of the world’s oldest luxury hotels and a perfect spot to warm up between outdoor shopping sprees.

Just down the Caribbean coast from the Yucatán with a fraction of the tourism, Belize has transformed from a backpacker haven into a luxury destination over the past few years. (Bonus: It’s only a five-hour flight from New York.) Along with world-class reefs for diving and Mayan ruins for exploring, the country is known for its conservation efforts, particularly when it comes to protecting ocean life. Many hotels and resorts have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon, including Turneffe Island Resort , which goes to great lengths to support the population of Antillean Manatees in the nearby Turneffe Atoll. Guests may get a chance to spot the gentle giants while staying on the resort’s 14-acre private island, while gift shop purchases go straight to the Belize Manatee Conservation Program.

Aside from offering an indulgent, adults-only stay on a true white-sand beach, Matachica Resort & Spa provides interactive workshops to learn about the Belize Barrier Reef, including guided scuba diving trips and helicopter tours. Given that December 4 marks World Wildlife Conservation Day, we say there’s no better time to pay these forward-thinking hotels a visit.

Switzerland

Switzerland

Switzerland is always one of the world’s most beautiful countries, but it becomes downright magical come winter: city squares dusted with snow and mountainsides transformed into the best ski slopes on the planet. It can be hard to pick just one Swiss destination to visit in December, which is why hopping on the Glacier Express is the perfect introduction to this wintery wonderland.

The Glacier Express is an eight-hour train ride that connects two of Switzerland’s biggest mountain resorts—Zermatt and St. Moritz—but it’s really more about the journey than the destination here. The train passes over 290 bridges, delivering panoramic views of landmarks like the Oberalp Pass and Matterhorn, and it even includes three-course meals to really help you enjoy every second of the ride.

Charleston South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina

If you want an immersive Christmas experience but aren’t a fan of cold weather, Charleston is the perfect destination for you. In fact, we’d argue that winter is one of the best times to visit, when temperatures hover around the 50s and 60s. Holiday attractions this year include the 34th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights (November 10–December 31, 2023), featuring an estimated 2 million twinkling lights, and Holiday Swing (December 2, 2023), a concert of reimagined Christmas carols courtesy of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

The city has no shortage of fabulous hotels, but some notable properties go all out for the holidays. The French Quarter Inn , voted one of the best hotels in Charleston by our readers, will be fully decked out with a Christmas tree and free gingerbread cookies in the rotunda, while the Sleigh Bell Suite comes with even more festive amenities: an in-room eggnog bar, freshly-baked cookies served by the fireplace, holiday movie screenings, and a special reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas from Santa himself. Over at The Spectator Hotel , personal butlers assigned to each guest can transform your room with personalized Christmas decorations, plus bring you any treats and drinks you request.

Whistler Canada

Whistler, Canada

If you’re desperately seeking slopes, you can’t do much better than the largest ski area in North America. With 8,171 acres of skiable terrain and hills ranging in difficulty from green to double-black, the twin peaks of Whistler Blackcomb truly have something for every winter sports enthusiast. Both the Big Red Express lift and Creekside Gondola were reworked a couple of years ago to hold more people, meaning the mountains will feel far less congested and visitors can enjoy even more rounds of powder.

Once you pack up your poles for the day, soak up all the après glory at Whistler Village. Here you’ll find the resort area’s largest concentration of bars and restaurants, ranging from the buzzy high-end seafood restaurant Wild Blue to the upscale yet relaxed Braidwood Tavern . In terms of hotels, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler looks (and feels) like a true fairy tale castle, nestled at the base of Blackcomb.

Santiago Chile

Santiago, Chile

Travelers often overlook Chile’s capital city in favor of splashier South American destinations like Rio or Buenos Aires—but we encourage you not to make that same mistake. Santiago is not only a superb base for outdoor adventure, thanks to its location between the Andes and the Pacific, but it’s an excellent standalone destination for anyone who loves great food, great wine, and plenty of shopping opportunities.

After exploring the city’s coolest neighborhoods, tack on a side trip to Valparaíso—the former seaport home of Pablo Neruda and current headquarters for the Chilean Navy. It’s just a two-hour drive here from Santiago, but you’ll want to plan to stay overnight (and not just because you’ll be drinking a lot of wine). With its colorful hillside houses and abundance of museum-worthy street art, Valparaíso is not an easy place to say goodbye to.

Antarctica

If you’re anything like us, emerging from two years of lockdowns and closed borders has inspired you to finally book that once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ve always dreamed about—like an expedition to Antarctica , for example. The white continent is at its best from December to March, when wildlife is active and the sun shines for nearly 24 hours a day. And while trips like these typically require a lot of advance planning, there’s still time to book a spot on an expedition cruise ship before 2023 wraps up (although you may want to use this time to start researching for next year).

Ponant has about a dozen sailings available through the end of December, with trips ranging from 10 to 15 nights and including stops in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Another great option is Quark Expedition’s “Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent” voyage, an 11-day trip with six departure dates within the month of December (plus many in 2024). Each sailing includes the typical stops, but Quark also started offering a majorly cool add-on a few years ago: alpine heli-trekking, in which guests board a helicopter (just imagine those views) and fly to typically inaccessible terrain to enjoy hiking or snowshoeing.

Moskito Island British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 tropical isles, the British Virgin Islands are easily one of the best places to travel in December. The archipelago is the epitome of Caribbean relaxation with white-sand beaches and lush rainforests—not to mention some of the best hotels in the entire region. Richard Branson’s Necker Island is arguably the most famous resort, freshly reconstructed with an emphasis on sustainability. New wind turbines join the existing solar farm so that the resort runs on 90 percent renewable energy. Even the staff uniforms are made from recycled plastic.

Recent years saw the arrival of two new private island resorts, both of which appeared on our 2022 Hot List . Off the northern end of Virgin Gorda, Saba Rock ’s nine-bedroom boutique hotel boasts a bustling rooftop bar, spacious guest rooms, and a seemingly endless supply of water sports. Meanwhile, Branson struck gold again with Moskito Island , located just two miles away from Necker Island. Guests with deep pockets can choose from three private estate rentals, each with its own distinct style. Amenities like private chefs and house managers available to help 24/7—plus the chance of running into Branson himself on the tennis courts—offer a true taste of a billionaire’s vacation.

best places to travel in december Paris

Paris shines extra bright during the holiday season, from the lights along the Champs-Élysées to store window displays that rival museum art installations. This year is a particularly great time to plan a trip, with inexpensive nonstop flights with French Bee (France’s first low-cost carrier ) and a crop of new hotel openings. Be one of the first to stay at Bulgari Hotel Paris or Hôtel Madame Rêve , housed in a former 24-hour post office—or choose from one of the many established hotels in the city.

For an extra-special holiday experience, book a spot on the “ Paris at the Holidays ” group trip (November 30–December 7) from specialty planning company French Affaires. Curated by France travel expert Elizabeth New Seitz, the trip includes an evening tour of the city’s Christmas lights, a private tour of the Louvre, a Buche de Noel (yule log) cooking class, and French afternoon teas at some of the city’s top palace hotels.

Get ready, fliers: Memorial Day weekend will kick off a humming summer at LAX

Los Angeles International Airport officials are bracing for peak traffic.

Los Angeles International Airport is preparing for a busy Memorial Day weekend, marking the start of what promises to be a hectic summer travel season for fliers, officials said.

Airport officials expect an increase in daily passengers at LAX until the end of the month, with more more than a million total passengers between Thursday and Monday. Friday is expected to be the holiday weekend’s busiest day, with about 235,000 travelers, followed by Thursday with 232,000. Saturday is expected to see the fewest travelers of the weekend, with roughly 197,000.

Vehicle traffic is also expected to increase at the airport over the holiday weekend, with about 90,000 to 96,000 vehicles on each of the busiest days.

Traveling for Memorial Day? Expect 3 million on the road and gas over $5 a gallon

Gas prices are high, but that isn’t stopping Southern Californians from hitting the road Memorial Day weekend. Here’s what you can do to save money at the pump.

May 23, 2024

“With school breaks, relaxed workdays and a strong demand for travel to and from Los Angeles, we expect a busy summer,” interim Chief Operations and Maintenance Officer Doug Webster said in a statement. “Our airport staff and airline partners are aware of the projected wave of travelers to the region, and are ready and well-equipped.”

The following weekend is also expected to see hundreds of thousands of people, with an anticipated peak off 235,000 travelers on June 2, a Sunday.

Officials recommend the following tips for the upcoming hectic summer weekends:

  • Get to the airport at least two hours before departure.
  • Pre-book parking, because LAX lots are expected to reach capacity.
  • Use the cellphone parking lots at 96th Street and Alverstone Avenue and 96th and Vicksburg Avenue when waiting to pick up arriving travelers; the designated areas help reduce traffic at LAX.

May 3, 2024

LAX is the world’s fifth-busiest airport. Last year, more than 75 million people flew through the airport. Although that total represents a steady increase since 2020, it falls short of pre-pandemic numbers. In 2019, for example, nearly 88.1 million passengers traveled through LAX, averaging 241,000 a day.

Airport officials have said that widespread shifts to remote work reduced interstate air travel, but that LAX is once again seeing hundreds of thousands of travelers each week.
