  • Ystaepels 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles GoBeyond Bangkok - Great Experience I arrived in Bangkok on the 19th of July and did not yet plan my 3 week trip at all. The GoBeyond office was next to my first hostel so i stepped inside to see if i could book some trips in advance. That's when i met Bua who really went beyond to help me plan my journey. Although i booked only a couple trips through GoBeyond (cooking class, elephant sanctuary visit and a three day Khao Sok tour), she kept on helping me throughout my stay! We stayed in contact through WhatsApp where she gave me tips on booking transportation or on restaurants i should really give a visit. There is nothing Bua would not do for you (even when she is free during the weekends...). I hardly recommend visiting the office and asking for Bua if you don't know what to do in Thailand. We have had an excellent 5 days trip our guide @Neil Guide, visiting Chiang Mai - Pai - Mae Hong Son, incl. 2x2 nights. We enjoyed many fine attraktions during the ride. We are in particular interested in nature, culture and people. Neil understood that very well, and we got all information needed, and much more, over the days, as we were met with engagement and a very professional approach. From the market visit and getting to learn about, smell and taste all different vegetables and herbs, to the actual cooking class, everything was top notch. I loved that everyone got to pick their own menus and cook their own dishes, as opposed to most "shared" cooking classes where you don't have any say in what is prepared and you only get to take turns at the cooking. Adults and children all loved this one, and the instructor was helpful and knowledgeable and so patient! Read more Written January 15, 2020

  • DrDimaaa 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Sometimes it was hard In General, I liked the trip. But there were downsides - chief among them for me is a small time on the biggest waterfall in Asia, and modest (not delicious) food in Karen village, dirty (very) posledenee linen, tent camping is the simplest. During the trekking back it would be possible to make more stops along the river to swim in the exhausting heat. I was ready to swim, but of the 11 people who came with us, apparently, no one thought (no one was warned) about it and it was not convenient to swim there when everyone is waiting for you. Phet was very knowledgeable and fun which are the most important things you need from a guide. We took a slow train from Bangkok first and it was an unique experience which showed me the life of the locals and how kind they were to strangers. After arriving in Ayutthaya we rented bikes and used them to get around the city. You would sweat a lot but if you enjoy biking you will love this experience - I loved it! For lunch and snacks, Phet also made sure we could get authentic taste of Thailand and it was really good. Thanks Phet for this trip! Read more Written April 7, 2019

  • Joshua R 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour, but beware of the heat It's hard to imagine a more cheerful tour guide than Phet. She was very accommodating and exposed us to many different snacks. Ayutthaya is spectacular, but extremely hot. I recommend bringing your own water bottle in addition to those that the tour will provide. We went in early April. I recommend doing it when the weather is cooler. Much of the cycling was on the road, so I wouldn't recommend this for the faint of heart, or for those who aren't decently fit. We weren't offered helmets, either, but to be fair, we didn't ask. The quality of the bikes were decent, but not as good as those of a tour we did the day before. All that said, this tour delivers on its promise to make travel to Ayutthaya from Bangkok easy, while maximizing the time spent in Ayutthaya. And Phet really is a pleasure to spend time with, as she not only explains the typical touristy stuff, but opened up to us about her personal journey in life. Read more Written April 5, 2019

Thi Lo Su falls is the sixth biggest waterfall in the world, so it’s pretty amazing that in order to reach it during most seasons, you must take a 4×4 on terribly flooded, muddy roads for hours just to make the 1.5 km hike from the park gates. It’s often nearly impossible to do the trek without a trekking company, as was the case when Allie and I decided to get off Thailand’s beaten path and head to Umphang.

Options for the trek usually include rafting, trekking or elephant riding (very bad, DO NOT RIDE ELEPHANTS), and an overnight stay in a Karen Village (a Burmese ethnic group that has migrated many of their tribes to Thailand). Most agencies will tell you that this is only doable in 3 days, and that to do it in 2 days would be extremely difficult. However, we did it in 2 days and while it was tough, I’ve done much harder treks that I’ve been told were easy! Remember, Thai people can be very lazy!

After visiting a number of agencies, we inadvertently stumbled upon Umphang House, a hostel that also does treks. For 2,500 baht, we got the whole package (minus elephant riding, this is a no-no!) and did it in 2 days, not 3!

We started off the first day around 9 am with the rafting section. Having just finished   whitewater rafting on the Pai River , this was a joke. We were not given life jackets nor helmets nor paddles. We just relaxed in the raft for three hours (plus a 20 minute break to lounge in hot springs) while two guides gently paddled us down the river. Although there really were no rapids, it was easily the most beautiful rafting I have ever done. The river was lined with waterfalls and mist, and although we did get poured on for about an hour, afterwards we saw tons of tropical birds including my favorite, the kingfisher, and even heard the occasional gibbon call.

Thi Lo Su falls Umphang Thailand

We hiked around the falls to the different levels and swam in a few. The water was cold but refreshing. After about two hours, we were called back by our guide to start the long and exhausting trek to the Karen Village.

Thi Lo Su falls Umphang Thailand

I will write a full article about our night in the village, but we had a blast. With thighs burning, we were greeted at the entrance by kids laughing at the river and motioning for us to come play.

IMG_3066

The next morning we slept in and then headed out for another, even tougher 3 hour trek to the pickup spot. It was hot and buggy and mostly uphill. But it was also the deepest into the jungle that I had been thus far, so it was pretty cool as well.

Awesome pics! Why are elephants a no-no?

' data-src=

Elephants go through a very harsh "breaking of the spirit" process in order to be able to be ridden by people. And the elephant masters carry large machetes that they dig into the elephants in order to steer them when tourists are aboard. I'm glad that you are enjoying the blog so much, thanks for all the feedback! I plan to write an article about elephant riding soon too!

I find it offensive that you catagorize Thai people as all "lazy". Beside the fact that it is stereo-typical and judgmental, it makes it difficult to think your interpretation of your trek has much merit. I have been working with Thai people for many years. If you call it lazy to own and work a restaurant that is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner than your arrogance is beyond reproach.

Cindy, I never said "all" Thai people are lazy and I am sorry if I came across that way. I ammended the sentence that offended you and I am sorry that it did. I was simply speaking in terms of trekking, as this is an adventure travel blog. At the end of the day, my interpretation of my trek is simply my interpretation of my trek. The only merit that it claims is just that. I love Thai people and their culture more than I have ever loved another culture, trust me I am no enemy to you or the amazing people that you work with! Thank you for your activity on the site, I hope that you will subscribe and continue to read No Strings Travel, we have many adventures ahead and we hope that you do too!

I am planning to trek in Umphang as well, but I only have short time to stay. Do you know any company offer 3 day 2 night tour to Umphang? As I can only find 3 nights tour which the schedule may be too tight for me. Hope you can help, thanks!

I am sorry, I do not know any agencies by name but there are lots of them in Umphang and they can be very flexible with tours and will work around your needs.

' data-src=

Hi I’m interested to do this trekking. I’m traveling by myself and many tour are private so I can’t do it because I’m alone. Could you give me the name of your agency please ? Thank si a lot

Marie, I recommend that you go to Umphang and talk to the various agencies in person. Your best bet is to visit all of the different tour agencies and see if they have space in their groups. When I did it, I was with my girlfriend and we got paired up with two other people that we did not know in order to fill the group. Speaking to the agencies in person is what I recommend.

' data-src=

Hi there, do you have any contact details of Umphang House, the guest house with whom you've booked your trekking? I can't seem to find them online. I can't seem to find any tour operators or agencies to contact in Umphang or are they all hostel or guest house owners?

Hi Eline! Unfortunately we just found the guest house by showing up in town and walking around for a while looking for a place to stay. Umphang is a very small town that does not see a lot of tourism, so booking ahead online may not be possible.

' data-src=

hello, how did you get to and from umphang? we were wondering if it was possible to go from chiang mai to umphang and then from umphang to kanchanaburi via bus. we were also wondering if it were possible to do all of this within 4 days (travelling and the trek) Thanks Alyssa

Hey Alyssa! I hope I'm not too late getting back to you! We had to travel first to Mae Sot by bus. We stayed a night there and then caught an early morning Songthaew (pickup truck with a carriage cover over the bed). The only way to get out of Umphang is to go back to Mae Sot. Umphang is super off-the-beaten path. We only saw two other tourists the whole time that we were there. But that made it one of our favorite stops in all of Thailand! You definitely need to see the huge cave there too! Even if it was possible to do all of this in 4 days, I really think that you will want to spend at least 4 days just in Umphang! Traveling there and back from anywhere in Thailand is going to take at least two full days, so I do not think trying to do it all in 4 is worth it. Feel free to email me at [email protected] for more help and quicker responses! Have an amazing time!

Umphang-Trekking-Hiking-Tours-Thailand

Thi Lor Su, also spelt Tee Lor Su or Thi Lo Su, is Thailand’s most impressive waterfall. The huge waterfall is hidden in the middle of Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary which is one of Thailand’s most remote and untouched areas. Thi Lor Su Waterfall cascades off sheer limestone cliffs which are within touching distance to the Myanmar border in Tak province, Northern Thailand. The waterfall was only made accessible around 20 years ago, before that it was a secret only known by local hill tribe villagers.

umphang trek

Thi Lor Su waterfall stretches 400 metres across steep, jagged limestone cliffs. There are multiple levels with swimming pools totalling 200 metres in height. During the rainy season the falls can be heard from 1km away as water thunders down the cliffs into the river below. Water flows at Thi Lor Su all year round, during the dry season swimming is a must do activity in the large refreshing multi-level pools.

Thi-lor-su-Waterfall-Umphang-Tak

Hiking to the top of Thi Lor Su waterfall is another must do activity. There is an exciting trail leading to the top providing unique views of the falls along the way. On the way to the summit you have to cross small sections of river and climb up small waterfalls, all whilst getting soaked by the surrounding cool water.

Umphang-Trekking-Hiking-Tours-Thailand

The adventure doesn’t stop there as it’s a real adventure getting to and from Thi Lor Su waterfall. Umphang is 28 km away, this is the closest town to Thi Lor Su waterfall. Umphang is connected to Thi Lor Su by dirt track, the track is impassable during the wet season so the local authority close it completely. The only other way to get there is by trekking through the jungle from Umphang or by a combination of rafting and trekking starting on the Mae Klong river in Umphang town.

Umphang-Trekking-Hiking-Tours-Thailand

A 3 day, 3 night tour starting from Umphang town is a great way to see Thi Lor Su waterfall. Tours combine exciting activities such as jungle trekking, river rafting, camping and staying the night at remote Karen Villages. See an example of a tour here .

Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary

Thi Lor Su waterfall is located in Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is a UNESCO world heritage site and forms part of the largest area of virgin rainforest in Thailand. Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary is in Tak province in Northern Thailand. Tak, together with the surrounding provinces of Mae Hong Son, Kanchanaburi and Kamphaeng Phet are home to some of Thailand’s most exotic wildlife species including wild Elephants and Tigers. Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1989 and covers an area of 2600 square Kilometres.

rafting umphang wildlife sanctuary

Thi Lor Su waterfall is the main attraction of Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, but there are plenty of other good reasons to visit. The section of river linking Umphang town to Thi Lor Su is a very beautiful stretch of river. The river is lined with huge limestone cliffs, some cliffs overhang the river which is especially exciting if you are rafting beneath them. Several waterfalls drop directly into the Mae Klong river, most notably Thi Lor Jor and Thi Lor lay waterfalls. Rafting along the Mae Klong river is a fantastic activity for nature lovers. The river flows at a relaxing pace, it takes around 3 hours to reach Pha Lueat ranger station, Thi Lor Su waterfall is a further 3 hour trek through the jungle.

Seasons at Thi Lor Su Waterfall

During the wet season from June to October Thi Lor Su is spectacular. Water thunders down the cliffs and can be heard from the camp site over 1 Kilometre away. The sights and sounds provide a memorable experience for nature lovers. Swimming is restricted to a few safe bathing areas during the wet season but it is still possible to trek to the top of the waterfall. There are considerable dangers during the wet season so it is important to follow local guides.

The dry season from November to May provides a different experience to the wet season. During the dry season it is possible to swim in the two large pools at the top and bottom of the falls. For the more adventurous there is the chance to jump into the lower pool directly from the waterfall above.

The dry season does attract more visitors, particularly around Christmas time when it’s a popular destination for Thai tourists. During the wet season there is a good chance that you will have the whole place to yourself.

Facilities at Thi Lor Su Waterfall

There are a few basic facilities at the ranger station located one kilometre from Thi Lor Su waterfall. There is a camping area with toilets and showers and a small shop which sells simple food and drinks. Getting to the waterfall from the camping area is easy as there is a maintained path which cuts through the jungle. It takes 15 minutes along this nature walk to reach Thi Lor Su.
