If you’re looking for an unforgettable Swiss experience, look no further than Oeschinensee, one of the prettiest lakes in Switzerland. We’ve visited this lake many times, bringing friends and family here to admire it’s super blue water nestled amidst majestic mountain peaks.

This alpine lake is easy to reach for all ages and abilities thanks to a gondola and easy path to the lakeshore. Many spend the day here lounging with a picnic, swimming, renting a boat to row across the lake, or soaking in the view from one of the restaurants.

If you enjoy hiking, we suggest the spectacular panorama trail that traverses the mountain high above the water. For a little thrill, make sure to ride the mountain coaster, one of the most scenic rides in Switzerland.

Keep reading for everything you need to know to plan your Oeschinensee visit and tips for success.

How to get there

Oeschinensee is located southwest of Interlaken, in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland (see on Google Maps ).

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Take the train to the Kandersteg, Bahnhof station. From Interlaken, it takes 1h12 with one change in Spiez. This connection runs hourly. See train schedule to Kandersteg on SBB.ch .

From the train station, it’s about 15 min walk to the gondola station as shown on the map below ( see on Google maps ). It’s easy to find. Simply follow the signs or the other people walking there.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Tip! Don’t wait for the bus

Although there is technically a bus from the train station to the gondola, it runs very infrequently and it’s not coordinated with the train schedule. It’s much better and quicker to walk to the gondola.

Drive to Kandersteg and follow signs to the Oeschinensee cable car ( Oeschistrasse 50, 3718 Kandersteg ). From the main road through the village, you will turn onto a narrow road leading towards the mountains.

There are multiple parking lots next to the gondola station, so don’t worry if they look full. If you drive past the cable car station, you’ll see overflow parking in a big grassy field. Don’t forget to pay for the parking!!! You can pay with coins at the meter machines or via an app.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Tip! Use a parking mobile app.

There’s often a long line at the parking meter, particularly with tourists that don’t understand how to use the machine. Instead, using the EasyPark app , which works for many Switzerland parking lots.

In the app, you enter your car license number (even for a rental car) and credit card number. When you park, open the app, confirm your parking location and set the duration of the parking. If you end up staying longer than planned, you can easily adjust your parking time via the app.

Overview map

This map shows the important elements of a visit to Oeschinensee. From Kandersteg in the valley, you ride a gondola up the mountain. At the top station, there is a restaurant, toilets, and the mountain coaster behind the gondola station.

To reach the lake, you walk on the dirt road (blue line), following signs to Oeschinensee. At the lake, you’ll find rocky beaches, picnic areas, restaurants, and hotel. If you want a mountain hike, you can follow the red line for the panorama trail above the lake. All of this is explained in more detail below.

Gondola ticket prices

To reach Oeschinensee, most people start by ride the gondola up the mountain. Compared to other Swiss mountains, the Kandersteg-Oeschinensee gondola is more affordable.

In 2024, an return ticket cost CHF 32/adult, CHF 16/child aged 6-15, under age 6 free. Dogs need a ticket for CHF 5. See website for current prices .

view of Kandersteg village, mountains and gondola car to Oechinensee

Discount 50% for Swiss Travel Pass , GA, Half Fare travelcards.

Discount 20% with guest card from your hotel or other accommodation in the area.

Free for kids aged 6-15 ride with the SBB Junior Card . But you can’t get the free ticket for them online or at the automated machines. Instead, buy your tickets then go to the gondola “Fast Lane” (not ticket booth). Show your ticket and the Junior Card. They will give you a ticket to use for your child.

Free with Berner Oberland Pass . This travel pass covers all public transport and most mountain transport in the Berner Oberland region for set number of days. This is a great option if you are traveling for several days in the Bernese Oberland Region (including Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, etc.).

For example: If you were staying in Interlaken, it would cost CHF 52 for your round trip ticket to Kandersteg and CHF 30 for your gondola ticket. Total CHF 82. If you bought the travel pass for 6 days at CHF 330, your average daily cost would be CHF 55.

See more Switzerland budget travel tips

Skip the line with eTickets.

Ticket lines at Oeschinensee can be long. So it’s best to buy your gondola tickets on the Oeschinensee website . If you are traveling by train, you can purchase your whole journey, including the train and gondola ride on the SBB Mobile App or website.

In either case, you get a QR code (bring on your phone or printed) that you can scan directly at the gondola entrance. You don’t have to exchange a voucher at the ticket booth. Online tickets can be used any day until the end of current summer season. You can even buy these online tickets while you are waiting in the ticket line.

There are also a few automated ticket machines, which typically have a shorter line than the in-person ticket booth. You can change the language to English so you understand what is happening.

Hike up from Kandersteg

If you want to skip the gondola (or its not running), you can hike up from Kandersteg on a dirt path below the gondola. The hike adds 2km and 450m of elevation gain to the easy 2km from the gondola to the lake.

There are a few benefits: you save money, you can go when the gondola isn’t running (sunrise, sunset, off season), and you can get a little exercise. I wouldn’t hike this (particularly with kids) because I’d rather spend my effort up at the lake. But I know lots of people who have hiked it and enjoyed it.

There’s also a private road leading to the lake, but often this road is closed to pedestrians because of rockslide danger. So best to check the SchweizMobil website for any warnings and trail closures. See a suggested route that skips the gondola .

Mountain coaster

At the top of the gondola, you’ll find the summer toboggan ride just behind the gondola station. I suggest riding this before you walk out to the lake because the lines can get really long in the afternoon.

The alpine slide is 750m long, descending 150m of elevation. One ride costs CHF 6/adult or buy a 5 pack for a small discount. Before 11:30 am, tickets are cheaper, only CHF 4/adult. You can buy tix online so you can skip the line.

summer toboggan ride at top of Kandersteg-Oeschinensee gondola

Tip! Ride the mountain coaster in the morning. Lines are much shorter in the morning and it’s discounted before 11:30 am. So instead of saving it for the end of your day, do it first thing.

Trail to the lake

The lake is not directly at the top of the gondola. You have to walk about 30 mins to get to the lakeshore. There are two paths that lead to the water. Most people take the easy walk on a gravel service road directly to the water. If you have a stroller, you should take this route.

If you prefer a quieter footpath, follow my trail map below that goes to the lake on a footpath and returns on the service road. See map on Komoot .

Shuttle to lake

If you prefer not to walk to the lake (good option for those with limited mobility), you can pay to ride a little shuttle bus to the lakeshore or back. The shuttle gives priority to those with reduced mobility. It can accommodate wheelchair users.

It costs CHF 10/adult one way. Since the way back is mostly uphill, it may make more sense to ride the shuttle only on the way back. Learn more .

Photo story of walk to lake

To access the lake, head out on the dirt road toward the mountains, following signs to Oeschinensee.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

You start on a dirt service road. If you have a stroller or have trouble walking on uneven surfaces, stay on the dirt road.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Otherwise, you can take the footpath that branches off to your left, after a few minutes on the road. I like that path better because it has a little variety as shown here.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

When you reach the restaurant you see in the picture below, the trail splits again. There is a trail that goes straight down in front of the restaurant.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Here’s the lake shore, lots of room to spread out. Depending on what time you come, the water level may be higher or lower than shown here. The lakeshore can be very rocky and dusty, so I recommend bringing a soft blanket to sit on.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

When you are ready to leave, follow the service road back to the gondola. It’s always more uphill than I remember and we are all huffing and puffing on our way back up. If you are too tired, you can ride the shuttle back to the gondola. It runs every 30 mins and costs CHF 8/adult.

Things to do at Oeschinensee

At the lake shore, you will find a restaurant, row boats to rent, a picnic area with fire pits, a sculpture garden and lots of places to lounge.

Stroll the lakeside

I’d guess that most people that visit Oeschinensee simply stroll, take lots of pictures, and perhaps find a nice spot to lounge with a view. If that’s all you do, it was definitely a day well spent!

If you walked on the service road, it leads you to the busiest part of the lake where you’ll find the restaurants and big picnic area. Many people stop here and don’t explore farther. It’s very nice but I think it’s a bit nicer if you keep following the road for a bit the forest.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

After just a couple minutes, you’ll exit the forest at this nice rocky beach. Many people will sunbath here and have picnics. There are also lots of trees for shade and more room to spread out. This area can also get crowded, but I think the view is a little nicer than over by the restaurants.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Picnic at the lake

There are several official and unofficial picnic areas along the lakeshore, some with tables and fire pits. If you need to pick up supplies before your visit, you can shop at the Coop grocery near the Kandersteg train station ( see on map ).

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Visit the waterfall

In spring, when the snow is melting and the lake level is low, a huge waterfall spills down to the lake and you can walk over to investigate a little closer. It’s a lot of fun and worth the small extra effort to explore this area. This pic was taking the first week of June 2019.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

However, by July, the lake is so full that the path to the waterfall is underwater. You can see in the photo below how the water level goes almost all the way to the trees and covers the path. Also, sometimes the waterfall dries up by the late summer. There was no waterfall when we visited end of July. But another time in mid August, the waterfall was still going strong.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Swim in Oeschinen lake

Every time I go to Oeschinensee, I think I won’t want to swim, but I always do once I get there. So bring your swimsuit and towel just in case. If it’s a warm summer day, you’ll see lots of people jumping in and you won’t want to miss out.

The water is icy cold and you won’t want to stay in long. There’s no changing room, so bring a big towel if you want a little privacy. Don’t forget sunscreen and a plastic bag for your wet things so your backpack doesn’t get soaked.

See more Swiss alpine lakes for swimming

Rent a rowboat

Renting a rowboat may be the nicest way to explore the lake. You can escape the crowds and explore the far corners of the lake that you cannot reach by foot.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

In 2023, rowboats cost CHF 19/30 mins and CHF 29/60 mins. They are open from 10:30 – 16:00. You cannot make a reservation; just wait in line until one is available. They provide life vests. They may close the rentals due to bad weather. See more info on Berghaus Arva website .

Short wander to higher viewpoint

Even if you don’t want to go on a long hike, I suggest wandering up the panorama trail from the lake. You’ll get a little above the lake for a different perspective and pass by another waterfall and river if you walk far enough. Even just 10 mins of walking is enough to make it worth it. We did this once when we were short on time and had a visitor with us.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Fishing at Oeschinensee

You can purchase daily or weekly fishing permits from the restaurants at Oeschinensee. They do not rent or sell equipment or bait. A fishing permit for one day costs CHF 32/adult, CHF 26/youth (17-25), CHF 20/child (under 16). Learn more .

Hikes at Oeschinensee

Panorama trail – most popular.

Our favorite hike at Oeschinensee is the Panorama Trail high above the lake. Many pictures you see of Oeschinensee are taken from this trail, giving you a bird’s eye view of the lake. We’ve done this hike several times with our kids and friends and it’s one of our very favorite hikes in Switzerland!

hiker on the panorama trail above the Oeschinensee with mountain views

The hike is an 8.5 km loop, starting from the gondola station. It has some steep climbs, ascending and descending about 430m. The path is moderate difficulty with some steep climbs and uneven terrain. It has a few exposed sections with steep slopes to one side and no barrier, which may make some feel uncomfortable.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

It’s suitable for casual hikers and children 6+ with hiking experience. Best done with good hiking shoes. If that sounds within your skill level, I highly recommend it. See a Panorama trail hiking map .

Via Alpina Stage 13

If you want a challenging hike, you may like the Via Alpine Stage 13 that hikes over a neighboring mountain pass before reaching the Oeschinensee.

The hike starts in Griesalp , hikes up to the Blüemlisalp mountain hut at 2840m. Then down towards the Oeschinensee, eventually joining the panorama trail to the lake. Then continuing all the way to Kandersteg. The full route is 17 km, 1450m up and 1700m down, about 7h30. Experienced hikers only.

Learn more about Via Alpine Stage 13 .

Planning your visit

Where to eat.

There are three restaurants and cafés at the lake. We always eat the Berghotel Oeschinensee , which has the nicest view in my opinion. It used to have table service, but I heard it’s self-service now as their staff was tired of poor treatment by rude customers. Please be nice!  You should reserve a table, especially on weekends and for groups larger than 4.

travel to kandersteg switzerland

If you can’t get a table, there is a kiosk next to this restaurant with snacks, sausages and ice cream for takeaway. See menu .

If you want to eat at one of the restaurants overlooking the lake, best to book a table ahead, particularly if you have a large group. You can book a table online with Berghotel Oeschinensee . I didn’t see online booking for Arva , the other restaurant near the lake. But you could call them and ask. In either case, ask if you can reserve a table outside with a view of the lake.

I hope you enjoy your visit to Oeschinensee!

Where to stay

There are many hotels in this region, both in the Kandersteg village and near the lake. My first choice would be the Berghotel Oeschinensee directly on the lake. In Kandersteg, we stayed once at Belle Epoque Hotel Victoria , which had an indoor pool and wonderful breakfast buffet.

For a special adventure, you can hike up to the Blümlisalphütte and stay overnight in this remote alpine hut. From the top of the gondola, it’s a 7.9 km hike to the hut, gaining 1250m of elevation. Best to reserve a few weeks in advance as they can book out quickly. See Blümlisalphütte website for details .

When to visit Oeschinensee

The summer season is from early May through mid October. For hiking, it’s possible that the panorama trail and higher elevations may have snow until mid June or later. So check the trail status for making firm plans.

The cable car runs generally from 8:30 to 17:00 (until 18:00 from mid June to mid Sept). I suggest arriving by at least 9:00 to get good parking and avoid the long lines. But even that early, I’ve still seen lines at the entrance, so it’s not a guarantee.

Tip: Leave early. If possible, I would try to leave a bit early in the day, maybe 14:00. The line for the gondola down the mountain can get very long in the late afternoon. We waited about 30 mins last time we went in July at about 15:00.

Oeschinensee is extremely popular and can get very crowded, especially on sunny weekends. If possible, it’s best to visit this lake on a weekday, preferably in June or September. But if you must go on a nice Sunday in July, you should still go.

Oeschinensee in fall

One of our favorite trips to the Oeschinensee was in the middle of November on an unusually warm day. The grassy meadows had turned golden brown, the larch trees had turned yellow, and the peaks were dusted in snow. It was so beautiful and so different from our other visits in summer.

Even though the gondolas officially close in late October, if the weather is nice, they may stay open on weekends through mid November. Check the current opening times .

travel to kandersteg switzerland

Oeschinensee in winter

You can also visit Oeschinensee in winter. The cable car usually runs from mid December to early March. Even if you aren’t skiing, you can walk a snowy winter trail to the lake. If the lake freezes, you can walk and skate on the ice, usually only in January. See current winter offers at Oeschinensee .

Nearby places to visit

Oeschinensee is an easy day trip from Interlaken and Jungfrau Region. See our other favorite hikes near Interlaken .

Kandersteg is part of the Adelboden-Lenk holiday region. See hikes we like in this region .

If you loved Oeschinensee, you might enjoy some of our other favorite lakes in Switzerland .

Is Oeschinensee accessible for wheelchairs and strollers?

The Oeschinensee gondola is wheelchair accessible with assistance from the staff. Strollers can be taken on the gondola but must be folded.

The path to the lake is obstacle-free and possible with a stroller or wheelchair. However, the road is a bit steep at times and would require good brakes. It’s probably better for wheelchair users to use the lake shuttle bus , which gives priority to those with reduced mobility.

Can you bring your dog to Oeschinensee?

Yes, dogs are welcome at Oeschinensee. You do need to purchase a gondola ticket for your dog for CHF 5 (SBB Dog Pass valid here). Dogs should be on the leash, particularly in any field that has cattle and on mountain trails to protect the safety of other hikers.

Can I swim in Oeschinensee?

Yes, swimming is allowed at the Oeschinensee. But the water is always very cold, even in summer. There are no changing room facilities and no lifeguard on duty.

What should

Can i store my luggage somewhere.

The Kandersteg train station has 18 lockers . The bigger size is 31.7 x 61.5 x 75.0 and costs CHF 5/day. The Kandersteg-Oeschinensee gondola has lockers at both the valley and mountain station.

Do I have to book ahead to visit Oeschinensee?

No, you do not have to book tickets in advance for Oeschinensee. Tickets do not sell out and can always be purchased on site. However, you can avoid long lines by purchasing tickets online, even the same day.

Can you drive to Oeschinensee lake?

No. To reach the lake, you can either ride a gondola up or hike up the mountain. There is a private road leading to the lake, but is only for service vehicles.

Just went Oeschinensee at the end of January and the lake was completely frozen and you could walk all the way…what an amazing place! Thank you for your detailed description of what to expect, my wife was worried at first but after reading your article she got confident and excited and she loved it!

So wonderful that you were able to visit Oeschinensee in winter! I went this week and walked on the frozen ice. Absolutely magical!

Oooooo girl! Excellent advice and details on your amazing website. We are doing our family trip this year to Switzerland just short of a full 2 weeks in early September. This will be my first trip to Europe. My husband is a BASE jumper so he’s been a couple times. We are staying primarily in Lauterbrunnen but plan to do day trips and hikes with our 11 yr old son. I am reading ALL the day planning, hikes, and coaster info and trying to narrow down what we can fit into our trip without overdoing it and including some spa/downtime. My bucket list included Lindt museum, the longest and/or fastest mountain coaster, best/memorable dinner restaurants, and of course trying new things. Did you have a specific page of must see and try section while in Switzerland? Food recommendations etc?

Hi Nichole, There are so many great things to do in Switzerland, it’s not really possible to pick a small list of “must do” things. It depends more on where you are staying and on what types of things your group likes to do. You might find my Bernese Oberland posts helpful: https://swissfamilyfun.com/region/bernese-oberland/

Hello, can you confirm please whether one can take just a one way ticket for the gondola and hike down by foot instead of riding true gondola again? Thank you

Yes, that’s possible. You can see the trail options down from Oeschinensee to Kandersteg on their website.

Hi, I am curious on how to make a reservation at these lake side restaurants as you suggested?

Hi. Berghotel Oeschinensee has online booking here: https://www.berghotel-oeschinensee.ch/en/restaurant-oeschinensee/

Hi! Are there toboggan runs near Lucerne or in the Jungfrau region that we can hike to or can drive directly to (ie. without having to pay for another expensive cable car or gondola ride)? I see for this one there’s a hike option but it’s a long, steep one.

You might find my Alpine Coaster post helpful: https://swissfamilyfun.com/best-alpine-coasters-switzerland/ The coasters that don’t require a gondola are not near Lucerne or Jungfrau Region. They are Atzmännig, Kronberg and Pradaschier in Eastern Switzerland and Robella in northwest Switzerland.

Thank you so much for this site! I saw that the hike without the cable car is 1.5 hours, is it only one way? And return the same way?

Hi. I included a trail map for hiking up to the lake without the gondola. It’s about 2.2 km to hike from the bottom to the top of the gondola. Then another 1.5 km to the lake. Total time about 90-120 mins depending on how fast you hike. You could return the way you came or follow the loop in my trail map: https://www.komoot.com/tour/196994800

It is written that the opening day is May 14th. Could it change? we are going to be in the area, just few days before. Is it possible to get there without the funicolor?

Sorry for my late reply. Yes, sometimes the opening dates change based on the weather conditions. Best to check the website for current status.

Hi, do you know if it is possible to get by car to Rodelbahn? Or you can only take cable car there(except from walk of course)?

No, it’s a private road leading up to the rodelbahn, only allowed for residents and service vehicles. You have to take the gondola.

Hai I’m going to the lake end of this March do you know if the cable car is open on March?

The gondola is open for winter season through 22 March 2020. You can see the schedule here: https://www.oeschinensee.ch/gondelbahn/

Great article!

Where would you recommend we stay for 3 nights with good access to this day hike? Is the Interlaken area a good home base? FYI: We are family with 3 small children and grandparents in-tow. 🙂

Yes, Interlaken would be a good base, as you would have quick access to other mountains as well. Oeschinensee is about a 45 min drive from Interlaken, 1hr10 by train.

Hi, I can see from the photo you have posted is that there are 3 things, 1. Alphine Swing 2. Path to the lake 3. Panorama loop can you please let me know what is the panorama loop and is it enough to do all 3 things in 4 hours.

The panorama trail is detailed in a separate post: https://swissfamilyfun.com/oeschinensee-panorama-hike/ This includes the path to the lake, just a longer hike. The Panorama trail took us about 3 hours. So I think in 4 hours you can probably do the alpine slide and the hike.

Hi I know in November the cable-car is closed, but do you know if I am still able to get to the lake from Kandersteg by walking?

Yes, you can walk up the road from Kandersteg to the lake, its about 3 km with about 400m elevation descent. My friend walked down it last week and said it was quite steep and rather unpleasant. But I know lots of people do it. The trails seem clear at the moment. All restaurants and services will be closed.

Can you set-up a fire for sausages anywhere around the lake?

Yes, unless there is a fire ban for dryness, which would be indicated by signs. Of course, you should make a fire pit to safety. You’ll find lots of fire pits all around this area so use one of those if you can.

Hi Tanya, I discovered your website few weeks ago and I took your advice for a trip to Lauterburnnen. I must say it was splendid!!! The tips and the details you have put on your webiste are so good, it makes the whole planning stuff piece of cake 🙂 Thank you so much for this good work. I am planning this small hike (probably extend it the panorama trail if my wife agrees to walk :P) to Öschinensee. I was wondering if one could skip the cable car and walk the way up to the lake?

So happy I could help! Yes, you can walk up from Kandersteg to the lake instead of riding the cable car. I think it’s on a dirt road and not nearly as scenic as above, but it’s certainly a good way to save some francs. If possible I would spend your energy on the panorama hike instead. It’s really special! But whatever you do, it will be beautiful and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

  • Pingback: Wandering and Swimming along Lake Oeschinen in Canton Bern • Family Matters Switzerland

This looks wonderful. We have a day to drive from Colmar to Chamonix….would you recommend this hike as a stop along the way. The drive is approx. 5 hours and I wonder if this would be a worthwhile stop. Assuming the hike and whole trip can be completed under 2 hours? Or would you have another recommendation. Thanks. Mona

It would be a long day but it looks like Kandersteg is on the way to Chamonix, so it would be convenient. If you do just the short walk to the lake, it shouldn’t take that long. But you have to factor in riding up the cable car, picture taking time, etc. If you are on a very tight schedule, I’d skip it. But if you are a little flexible, I think it would be worth a visit.

Very helpful info, your blog really motivated me to go for hiking in Swiss.

Thanks a lot for your wonderful website!

It’s just great!

We will try one of your trip soon!

Please share this post:

Mountains, in my opinion, are the ultimate travel destination for three reasons: the awe-inspiring views, the thrill of adventure, and the tranquility of nature. That’s why Switzerland, especially the Alps, is such a magnet for travelers (like me), despite the high cost.

One lesser-known gem in the Swiss Alps is Kandersteg. This town, part of the UNESCO Jungfrau-Aletsch area and located 69 kilometers south of Bern, boasts stunning mountain vistas and serene alpine landscapes.

While it may be overshadowed by more famous Swiss attractions like Lauterbrunnen , Zermatt , Grindelwald , and Interlaken , Kandersteg offers its own unique and impressive experiences to visitors.

1. Explore Picturesque Village of Kandersteg

Let’s start our Kandersteg adventure with a simple yet wanderlust-satisfying activity: Taking a leisurely stroll around the scenic town of Kandersteg.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Town of Kandersteg

Kandersteg might not be on every list of Switzerland’s prettiest towns, but with its surrounding 3000-meter-high mountains and cozy chalets, it’s a town that invites leisurely strolls. The Bernese Alps rise majestically above the town’s traditional houses, which are decorated with vibrant flowers.

The Church of Saint Mary and the Gasthof Ruedihaus are among the town’s charming structures, each exuding a quaintness reminiscent of a bygone era indie movie.

Church of Saint Mary

Nestled in the heart of Kandersteg, just a stone’s throw away from the tourist center, is the Church of Saint Mary, a charming chapel of the Catholic Church.

It’s an easy walk (around 5 minutes) from Bahnhof Kandersteg train station — just head northeast across the bridge and continue east past the tourist center. After a few steps, you’ll catch sight of the church.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Church of Saint Mary

While the Church of Saint Mary may not be as grand as some of the churches in Switzerland’s larger towns, it has a unique charm that truly captures the spirit of the Alps. Its stone structure, spire, and location amidst lush green meadows make it a sight to behold.

And with the towering three-thousand-meter peaks nearby, you can snap a picture of the church against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Don’t forget to jump in the photo yourself for a memorable souvenir of your visit to Kandersteg!

Landgasthof Ruedihus

Another cultural treasure in Kandersteg is the Landgasthof Ruedihus, a hotel and restaurant that’s been recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

With 250 years of tradition under its belt, it offers an authentic alpine atmosphere and specializes in Swiss cuisine. Don’t miss out on trying their Suure Mocke (marinated pot-roast) and Schnifu Büürehamme (special cured farmhouse ham).

While the food at this centuries-old hotel restaurant comes highly recommended, I personally find the dining experience itself to be the real highlight.

As someone who’s more about the ambiance than the cuisine, I can tell you that the architecture and exquisite alpine decorations create a truly unique atmosphere. As you savor their authentic Swiss dishes surrounded by such beauty, I think you’ll understand what I mean.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Landgasthof Ruedihus

Just picture yourself standing in front of the stunning facade of Landgasthof Ruedihus, savoring delicious fondues and raclettes. It’s a feast for both the stomach and the eyes!

Located on the southern outskirts of town, Landgasthof Ruedihus is just a quick 2-minute drive from the Kandersteg tourism office, or a leisurely 15-to-20-minute hike. Simply head south along Kandersteg’s main street from the tourism office.

Here’s the  map location of Landgasthof Ruedihus  if you need directions. You can learn more about Landgasthof Ruedihus .

2. Ride on Kandersteg Mountain Coaster (Sommerrodelbahn)

Nestled in the eastern part of town is the Oeschinensee gondola lift station – your starting point for a host of exciting activities and scenic spots in Kandersteg.

One standout attraction is the Kandersteg Mountain Coaster, better known as the Rodelbahn Oeschinensee. This exhilarating ride offers a mix of adventure, thrill, and awe-inspiring views. All you have to do is sit back, hold on tight, and let yourself slide down a half-tube metal track for some unforgettable alpine fun!

With a length of 750 meters, or 2460 feet, and a vertical drop of 150 meters, or roughly 950 feet, the Rodelbanh Oeschinensee’s metal track promises an exhilarating ride. Feel the thrill as you navigate each curve at high speed! But make sure to keep your eyes open! The coaster boasts stunning views of the mountain cliffs to the west of Kandersteg.

It’s a ride that will fill your senses with pure joy and is an absolute must-do! Have a look at the fun that awaits you:

The Oeschinensee toboggan run is open from mid-spring to mid-autumn, but only when the weather is dry – safety first, after all! During the summer months, you can enjoy the rides from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but note that they close an hour earlier in the non-summer months.

For more details about the Kandersteg toboggan run, you can visit its official website . It’s a handy resource for checking ticket prices and even booking your tickets online.

3. Visit The picturesque Oschinensee from Kandersteg

Oeschinensee’s toboggan run offers fun for all ages, making it a popular choice for families visiting Kandersteg.

However, if you’re traveling solo like me, you might find the nearby Lake Oeschinensee to be an even more enticing attraction.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Oeschinensee

Considered one of the most picturesque high-altitude lakes in the Swiss Alps alongside Riffelsee and Schwarzsee near Zermatt and Bachalpsee near Interlaken, Lake Oeschinensee is a sight to behold.

It’s situated 4 kilometers east of Kandersteg, but a gondola lift ride brings visitors closer to both the toboggan run and the lake. The remaining distance from the Oeschinen Gondola lift station to Lake Oeschinensee is roughly 1.5 kilometers.

While minibusses sometimes operate between the lake and cable car station, many opt for a scenic 20-minute hike instead. Sitting at approximately 1500 meters above sea level, Oeschinensee freezes over in winter, offering a range of activities and making it a popular spot all year round.

Oschinensee During Winter in Kandersteg

Oeschinensee usually freezes over in December and stays that way until May, giving you a solid five months of winter fun. The lake transforms into a massive ice skating rink, allowing visitors to glide smoothly across the ice without having to turn too often.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Oeschinensee during winter

The frozen Oeschinensee skating rink is also excellent for family vacationers and friends who want to play together or engage in fun activities.

Individual travelers can try ice fishing in Oeschinensee. Ice fishing is a popular activity in Oeschinensee from January to mid-March. If you plan to go ice fishing, you can expect to find different types of fish such as Arctic char, lake trout, and rainbow trout.

However, ice skating and ice fishing in Oeschinensee aren’t always available, even in the middle of winter. Availability depends on the weather and the assessment of local authorities. Factors such as ice thickness and avalanche warnings are evaluated before allowing visitors to come to Oeschinensee.

Before you set out for Oeschinensee from Kandersteg, it’s a good idea to visit the official website and check for any updates from the authorities.

Oschinensee During Summer in Kandersteg

If you’re journeying from afar, the best time to experience Oeschinensee is when the lake has thawed.

This is typically from spring through to autumn, ideally during the shoulder seasons to avoid large crowds. This is when you can witness the lake’s waters transform into a radiant turquoise blue under the sunlight.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Oeschinensee

A visit to Oeschinensee comes highly recommended by nearly everyone who’s been there. The sight of the towering rock walls surrounding the lake is truly breathtaking, especially when you see the mountains reflected on the lake’s surface.

This stunning ‘mirror’ view can be enjoyed from the beach near Berghotel Oeschinensee and along the hiking trails on the northern shore. While it’s possible to hike around Oeschinensee for different perspectives of the lake, it’s always a good idea to check with the tourism office about trail availability, as routes may be closed due to rockslide risks.

To make your hike easier, consider following this trail map I created using Komoot, which takes you along a gradual incline through some of the most scenic parts of Oeschinensee.

The hiking trails to the east of Oeschinensee, nestled among towering rock walls, offer unique views of the lake that you won’t often see on social media. However, these trails are quite challenging and may not be suitable for those with a fear of heights, as they require some rock climbing skills.

But don’t worry, Oeschinensee will already take your breath away the moment you reach the beach near the hotel and restaurant. There’s no need for strenuous hiking to enjoy your visit.

You can rent a kayak, take a swim in the lake, or even try your hand at fishing! Just remember to bring your own fishing gear like rods, hooks, and bait. And don’t forget, you’ll need a permit and should familiarize yourself with local fishing regulations before you cast your line. Keep in mind that fishing permits can be a bit pricey, ranging from CHF 20 to CHF 32 depending on your age.

Fishing permits are available at the restaurants near the Oeschinensee.

4. Have Fun in The Nordic Arena Kandersteg

Should you find yourself in a group of 10 and seeking more excitement after the toboggan run, don’t miss out on the next big thing in Kandersteg: The Nordic Arena.

At the Nordic Arena, you can participate in a variety of sports training and fun experiences, one of which is mountain tubing. This heart-pounding activity lets you slide from the top of a ski jumping hill to the bottom at speeds reaching 90kph (56mph). It’s fun and quite a sight seeing your friends or family members’ faces light up with thrill as they zoom down the hill!

Mountain tubing is open from June to September, every day at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., except Saturdays. You’ll need to register and make a reservation ahead of time. Please note that mountain tubing is only available when the weather is dry. The cost for adults is CHF 35 and for kids aged 10 to 15, it’s CHF 20. Group discounts are also available. For more information and to make a booking, visit the official Nordic Arena website .

5. Hike Sunnbuel-Gemmi Pass and Visit Schwarenbach Hotel from Kandersteg

Exploring the Alps often involves a good hike. If you’re in Kandersteg and looking for more trails beyond Oeschinensee, consider the Sunnbuel-Gemmi Pass. It’s one of the top 10 hiking trails in Kandersteg and is a great choice if you’re interested in visiting another town, Leukerbad, after your hike.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Sunnbuel Gemmi Pass

The Sunnbuel-Gemmi Pass hiking trail winds its way from the southern part of Kandersteg, through the Sunnbuel plateau, all the way to Gemmi Pass and Leukerbad. Essentially, you’ll be crossing the boundaries of the cantons of Bern and Valais.

The trail features two beautiful lakes, Arvenseeli and Daubensee, and a charming hotel known as Hotel Schwarenbach. This hotel is well-loved for its delicious tarts, cozy atmosphere, and top-notch service. Personally, I’m a fan of the hotel’s design. The stone structure and wooden windows really enhance the alpine feel of the trail.

The real reward comes after hiking the Sunnbuel-Gemmi Pass when you arrive in Leukerbad. Known as one of Switzerland’s largest spa and wellness resorts, Leukerbad boasts numerous thermal baths filled with healing waters that reach temperatures of 51°C/123°F.

Taking a dip in these thermal baths is the perfect way to unwind after a hike. The Sunnbuel-Gemmi Pass journey begins with a cable car ride in Kandersteg (Sunnbuel) and concludes with another cable car ride in Leukerbad (Gemmi Pass).

To reach the Sunnbuel Talstation (valley station), you can either take bus #241 towards Eggeschwand or enjoy a 33-minute hike from the center of Kandersteg. You should find yourself at the Sunnbuel Talstation about 5-10 minutes after leaving the town center of Kandersteg. Under ideal conditions, hiking the Sunnbuel-Gemmi Pass trail should take around 3 hours.

Here are the specifics of the trail:

6. Feel the Thrill: Kandersteg Via Ferrata in Allmenalp

Are you up for an adrenaline-pumping adventure? Check out Allmenalp Via Ferrata, one of the most thrilling and scenic Via Ferrata routes in Switzerland. You’ll have the opportunity to scale a 350-meter high rock wall, right next to the stunning Almenbach waterfall.

Allmenalp Via Ferrata is not just about climbing walls — it also features zip-line rides and a three-rope bridge for a real adrenaline rush. On the Hulster scale, Allmenalp Via Ferrata has a difficulty rating of K4, with K1 being the least challenging and K6 being the most difficult.

The course typically takes around 3 to 3.5 hours to finish, plus an extra 15 minutes for hiking. You can rent Via Ferrata equipment from the valley station of the Allmenalpbahn, situated near the Almenbach waterfalls to the southwest of Kandersteg.

The daily rental fee is CHF 25 per person. Once you’ve completed your adventure, you can take the cable car back to Kandersteg at a cost of CHF 14 for adults and CHF 7 for kids. The Allmenalp cable car runs from mid-spring through mid-autumn. You’ll find the schedule below, but be sure to check the official Allmenalp website for any updates or changes.

7. Relax in Blausee Nature Park near Kandersteg

If you prefer relaxation over extreme adventure, then your next stop in Kandersteg should be Blausee Nature Park. It’s not just any nature park, though. Inside, you’ll discover a breathtakingly beautiful turquoise crystal clear lake, along with amenities like a coffee shop, a barbeque grill garden, a bistro, and even a fish farm.

There’s also a hotel where you can rest and recharge. In short, Blausee Nature Park might just have everything you need to relax after your adventures in Kandersteg.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Blausee

Of course, the main draw of the nature park is Lake Blau, also known as Blausee in German. It may not be as expansive as Lake Oeschinen, but its vibrant colors and glass-like transparency are truly mesmerizing. Nestled amidst a forest, Lake Blau presents a magical view as it mirrors the surrounding trees on its surface when the sun shines. The sight is particularly spectacular during autumn.

A hike around Blausee is possible and can be completed within 10-15 minutes due to the lake’s compact size. As you wander around, you’ll likely see small boats gently floating on the turquoise waters of Blausee – a truly picturesque sight!

In summer, special boats with glass floors are available for rides on Blausee. Although you may see fish in the lake, fishing is prohibited. But don’t worry – there’s a trout farm close by where you can purchase fresh fish and cook them at the park’s spacious grill area. For more details about Blausee, check out its official website .

To get to Blausee from Kandersteg via public transit, first make your way to Kandersteg Bahnhof. Then, hop on bus #230 that’s going to Frutigen. You’ll need to alight at the 7th stop, known as Blausee BE. Once you disembark from the bus, you should immediately spot a big signboard for Blausee.

8. Visit Adelboden’s Giant Swing from Kandersteg

Adelboden, a town to the west of Kandersteg, is nestled on the valley on the other side of the towering 2000-meter-high mountains of Chlyne Lohner, First, and Bunderspitz. Despite these mountains, traveling from Kandersteg to Adelboden is quite straightforward.

It’s just an hour’s bus ride away on bus #230. Once there, you can visit Switzerland’s giant swing that offers a panoramic view of the entire Adelboden. While it might not be as thrilling as the toboggan run in Kandersteg, the breathtaking view and picture-worthy spot make it worth a visit!

Kandersteg Switzerland, Adelboden

At this spot, you can snap photos of yourself swinging high above the ground, with the stunning alps serving as a breathtaking backdrop. Just remember to be cautious and not swing too wildly, as there’s no protective gear – it’s just you holding onto the ropes to stay seated on the giant swing.

The swing is located on a ridge plateau known as Tschentenalp. To reach it, head to the Tschentenalp valley station, which is northeast of the Tourist Center Adelboden. Here, you’ll find cable cars that will take you directly to Tschentenalp.

You can discover more activities in Adelboden on its official website . However, apart from the giant swing, the top two attractions in this town are:

  • Engstligen Falls — a stunning 600-meter waterfall located in the southern part of Adelboden. It’s about an hour’s hike from Adelboden, but you can cut down on the trek by taking bus #232 towards Chäli.
  • Cholerenschlucht Adelboden — a highly-rated gorge located to the north of Adelboden, featuring steel pathways for visitors to explore. To get there from Adelboden, you can take bus #232 towards Adelboden, Ausserschwand. However, you’ll still need to hike for about 15 minutes to reach the gorge.

9. See the Triangular Shadow in Niesen Mountain

By now, I believe I’ve covered all the noteworthy activities to do in and around Kandersteg. But don’t forget, the journey to and from Kandersteg is filled with beautiful sights worth seeing too! One such attraction is Niesen Mountain, often referred to as Switzerland’s pyramid mountain.

Niesen is a spectacular mountain located in the canton of Bern, offering stunning views over Lake Thun. It’s one of the mountains you’ll spot on your journey to Kandersteg.

The beauty of Niesen is best appreciated when viewed from the opposite side of Lake Thun, near Interlaken, where it forms an almost perfect triangular shape. But you don’t have to cross the lake or take a bus ride around it to truly appreciate this mountain. In my opinion, the real magic of Niesen Mountain is experienced at its peak.

At the peak of Mount Niesen, a breathtaking view of the entire Canton of Bern awaits you. From here, you can observe the striking shift in Switzerland’s geography from the central plateau to the jagged peaks of the Alps. You’ll also have an overhead view of Lake Thun and Brienz, where you can see boats creating ripples as they glide across the water.

The best time to experience Mount Niesen is from afternoon until sunset. If luck is on your side, you may see Mount Niesen projecting a triangular shadow onto the fields and lake beneath.

Here’s a sample:

Kandersteg Switzerland, Mount Niesen

There are a couple of ways to get to the top of Mount Niesen. The first option is to hike up the entire mountain, although I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this. The second, and perhaps more convenient option, is to take the funicular. This can either cut down your hike or take you straight to the summit.

The funicular’s base station is located in the quaint village of Mülenen. If you’re traveling to Kandersteg from Spiez by train, Mülenen is the first stop. On the other hand, if you’re coming from Kandersteg, it’s the last stop before you reach Spiez.

10. Explore Lake Thun after Kandersteg

Given that Lake Thun is on your route to and from Kandersteg, it makes sense to include it in your travel plans. More importantly, Lake Thun is home to some truly beautiful attractions along its shores. Two notable ones are the Oberhofen Castle, a charming castle with a tower that extends into the lake, and the Saint Beatus Caves.

Kandersteg Switzerland, Oberhofen Castle

From Spiez, boat rides are available to these tourist attractions. For more information on Oberhofen Castle and Saint Beatus Caves, you can refer to my articles about Interlaken and Thun .

How do you get to Kandersteg, Switzerland?

You can get to Kandersteg by car or public transportation, but public transit is the preferred option, especially if you’re coming from major Swiss cities like Geneva , Basel , Bern , or Zurich . From these cities, you’ll need to take at least two train rides to reach Kandersteg.

The quickest route from Basel, Bern, or Zurich is via a train ride to Spiez. From there, you can catch another train to Kandersteg. Kandersteg is situated at the end of its valley, and on the final leg of your train journey from Spiez to Kandersteg, you’ll pass through the towns of Mülenen, Reichenbach im Kandertal, and Frutigen.

If you’re traveling from Geneva to Kandersteg, you can also take the route via Spiez. However, a faster option would be to take the IC train to Brig and then catch another train to Kandersteg.

When to Visit Kandersteg

Given that Kandersteg’s attractions are primarily outdoor, weather plays a crucial role in planning your visit.

The ideal time to visit is during the summer, particularly from July to August, when the weather is at its warmest and temperatures usually remain below 25 degrees Celsius. Summer is particularly suitable for water activities at Oeschinensee.

However, if you’re more interested in sightseeing, consider visiting during the shoulder season for a less crowded and more budget-friendly experience. For a unique sight, especially around Oeschinensee, an autumn visit offers a view of stunning fall foliage. Plus, autumn is the driest season in Kandersteg.

How Many Days in Kandersteg

A single day is ample to experience the beauty of Kandersteg, especially its highlight, Oeschinensee. Start your day by exploring the charming village of Kandersteg. Then, head over to Oeschinensee, where you can spend the majority of your day. You can hike, relax by the lake, or even participate in water activities!

If you’re staying in Bern or Interlaken, a day trip to Kandersteg is a great choice as it’s only a couple of train rides away.

Going for a day trip to Kandersteg? Make sure to peek at the Oeschinensee webcams before your Kandersteg day trip. This way, you can be certain of having a great time. If the weather’s fine, go ahead! If it’s not, don’t worry, there will be a next time!

Spending two days in Kandersteg is a fantastic idea if you’re looking to add some extra fun to your trip. After a day of exploring the village and Oeschinensee, why not try the thrilling mountain coaster? You could also visit nearby attractions like the serene Blausee and the exhilarating Adelboden Giant Swing.

In my view, Kandersteg is an ideal weekend getaway, particularly for those in Europe seeking a couple of days in a lesser-known destination.

Where to Next After Kandersteg?

Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Kandersteg is close to numerous destinations in Switzerland. Within a couple of hours, you could be exploring another charming village in Switzerland or a city that’s just a stone’s throw away from the Swiss Alps .

If you’re seeking the closest destination, the Jungfrau Region should be your first stop, where you’ll find Grindelwald, Interlaken, and Lauterbrunnen. These places are, in my opinion, the jewels of Switzerland, boasting a wide array of attractions. To experience the whole Jungfrau Region, you’ll need to spend 7 days in Interlaken .

Zermatt is another key place to visit in Switzerland that’s not far from Kandersteg. It’s a place you really should see because it offers the best views of the famous Matterhorn mountain .

If you’re interested in a blend of cultural and alpine experiences, consider visiting larger towns a bit further from the mountains, like Gruyeres . This town is renowned for its cheese, chocolates, and charming streets at its medieval city center.

In fact, there are fantastic destinations in the Alps that offer a mix of experiences as well. They a nice destination for travelers looking for hidden gems. Take Sion , Brig , and Thun for instance — these alpine cities boast medieval castles that tower over the rest of the city. If you’re after a combination of lake, mountain, and culture, Lucerne or Montreux should be on your list.

Lastly, it’s important to note that Kandersteg is only a short 40-minute train ride away from Brig. Brig has a direct train service to Milan , making it a convenient starting point for your travels in northern Italy , including destinations like Lake Como , Bergamo , or Cinque Terre .

Oeschinen Lake: How to Visit, Best Things To Do & More

oeschinen lake

Oeschinen Lake is about as blue and beautiful as a lake can be. Nestled in the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Bernese Alps, it is home to magical scenery, azure blue waters, hiking trails, great fishing, and lots more.

Visiting Oeschinensee is kind of a must if you are in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland over the summer, and we have all the details you need to explore it in the best way possible.

Stay by the lake, row boats across it, hike to peaks close by, catch fresh trout, and even enjoy a toboggan ride. There is a lot to enjoy along with the breathtaking scenery.

Where is Lake Oeschinen Located?

oeschinen lake

Oeschinen Lake is located in the Bernese Alps at the southern end of the Canton of Bern in Central Switzerland, just above the village of Kandersteg. It is actually along the road to the Lötschberg Tunnel which takes you on a train to Valais. The closest major town is Interlaken which is about a 45-minute drive away.

Lake Oeschinen is surrounded by stunning mountains and the only way to get up there is via a cable car/gondola, or by walking.

Map of Oeschinensee Lake and Kandersteg (hikes included)

How to Get to Oeschinen Lake

Getting to Lake Oeschinen is easy and you can use either public transport or drive. You can not drive to Oeschinen Lake though, even though Google Maps says you can, and will have to use the Lake Oeschinen cable car/Oeschinensee Gondola.

Take the train to Kandersteg train station which, from Zurich HB is a 2-hour ride changing at Bern and Spiez. You can get to Kandersteg from any train station in Switzerland if you need to, but travel times will vary, of course.

Once you have arrived at Kandersteg, walk to the Oeschinensee Cable Car station which takes about 15 minutes. Buy a ticket for the cable car ride, CHF 22 one way, and 30 CHF return, and then ride up to the top cable car station, which takes about 15 minutes.

Once you reach the top, it is about a 30-minute walk to Lake Oeschinen from the cable car station. You can also take a bus for 8 CHF if you are short of time or don’t fancy the walk.

Note, the cable car operates from May to October for the summer season and then from January to March for the winter. It is open from 8:30 am and runs to 5:00 pm. There is a cable car every minute so you won’t have to wait long.

There is a large parking lot by the cable car station which is the perfect place to park if you are driving. Just put the cable car station into your maps and enjoy the scenic drive up the mountains.

When you arrive, follow the same instructions I described above for using cable cars.

You can also hike up to Lake Oeschinen if you want to avoid the cable car. It is a 4.8-mile hike with very steep terrain.

You will have to go up 1800 feet of elevation, so it might be best to take the gondola ride to visit Oeschinen Lake as it saves a lot of time and effort.

Another option is to take the cable car up and hike back down, enjoying the lovely views as you go!

Accessibility

The team operating the cable car to the Oeschinensee has put some serious thought into accessibility .

  • There are specific parking spots by the cable car ticket office
  • The gondola is wheelchair accessible
  • There is a free electric shuttle to the lake ( learn more )

Things to Do At Oeschinen Lake

Hiking in Oeschinen Lake

Oeschinen Lake is best known for its hiking trails and there is a range of them to suit all abilities.

The easy hike is the short hike to the lake from the cable car station which has very little elevation gain and takes just 30 minutes. The views along the hiking trail are stunning as you see the towering Alps and then eventually the turquoise blue color of Lake Oeschinen.

The Panorama Hike is a 5.4-mile loop hike that takes you from the cable car station to Lake Oeschinen, up the mountain valley via the Berghaus Unterbärgli , Oberbärglibach waterfall , around the mountains, and back to the cable car station.

It is known as one of the best hikes at Lake Oeschinen with incredible views of the lake from above. You will also walk through wildflowers, past streams, Swiss cows, and more. It truly is a beautiful hike but there are some steep sections so it is not for anyone who is unfit.

You can also extend this hike into a long hike that takes you to the Blüemlisalphütte mountain hut or the Fründenhütte mountain hut way up in the peaks.

If you are visiting Oeschinen Lake in the summer months, then do not miss the chance to go swimming in the lake. While the water is glacial and very cold, the azure blue color is so inviting, and talk about a swim with a view.

Just imagine going for a swim in ice-blue water surrounded by mountains. It will be a swim you never forget.

Make sure you have a change of clothes with you as the water is rather cold (max 20 degrees celsius at the height of summer), so you will want to change pretty quickly. If the sun is out, a spot of sunbathing on the lake shores is not a bad idea either.

Boating in Oeschinen Lake

Rowing boats are available to rent on the shore of Oeschinen Lake and there is no better way of enjoying the stunning scenery than taking a boat out into the lake.

Rowing boat rentals cost about CHF 25 an hour and they are very popular when the weather is good so make sure to hire a boat early in the day before they run out.

If you are a fan of fishing, then there isn’t a more beautiful place to catch fish than Oeschinen Lake.

Oeschinen Lake is home to rainbow trout and arctic char. You can buy a fishing license from one of the restaurants close to the lake which costs CHF 32 for an adult and there are discounts for younger anglers.

You can fish from the lake shore or you can hire a fishing boat for a day CHF 80 or half a day, CHF 40.

You are allowed to keep the fish you catch for dinner too but you have to bring your own fishing equipment. Spinning, bait, and fly fishing are all allowed on the lake.

Mountain Coaster / Tobogganing

A great thing to do at Oeschinen Lake if you are with kids or like a bit of adrenaline is to go on a mountain coaster .

You will find the summer toboggan run at the top gondola station. It is a 750-meter slide that you can ride on every day during the summer so long as the weather permits it and is a great mountain coaster overall.

You can rush down the run solo or as a duo. It costs

  • CHF 6 for a ride
  • 27 CHF for 5 rides

Note: Kids have to be over 6 years old to ride and get a small discount.

Activities During Winter At Oeschinen Lake

The winter season at Oeschinen Lake is of course a little different. Lake Oeschinen is frozen solid but still looks spectacular, especially with the surrounding scenery of snow-capped mountain peaks.

You can still get up to the mountain station via the cable car and there are some great winter activities to be had as well.

Sledding at Oeschinen Lake is a ton of fun in the winter months and it is very affordable too. It costs just CHF 12 to rent a sledge for the day and you can rush down the 3.5 km sledging course down the mountain.

It starts at the top mountain station and ends at the cable car station in the valley. You will zoom down the fast run in a matter of minutes and be filled with adrenaline. It is the funniest way to get down from Lake Oeschinen in the winter.

Winter Hiking

Winter hiking in Oeschinen Lake

If you know how to winter hike , hiking around Oeschinen Lake in the winter is a lovely activity to do. You can even hike across Lake Oeschinen once it is frozen solid enough.

All the hiking trails around this blue lake are open in the winter except the trail between Oeschinen Lake and Kandersteg as it is covered in skiers.

Winter hiking certainly comes with its risks and you need to stick to the trails, plan around the weather, and bring the right equipment and footwear for the hike you are intending to do.

There is a small ski area at Lake Oeschinen which is great for kids, beginners, and more advanced skiers too. You can use the cable car to access the downhill run for advanced skiers that runs from the top station back to the bottom.

There is also the Oeschiland children’s park next to the mountain station with kids’ ski lifts and a magic carpet for learning.

Cross-country skiing is also excellent around Lake Oeschinen. Whatever level you are at, skiing around the spectacular scenery of the lake is wonderful.

Ice Skating

Ice skating in Oeschinen Lake

Once the lake is frozen solid it is an excellent place for ice skating. The ice is usually around 15 cm thick which is more than enough to hold your weight.

You can rent skates for just CHF 8 per day for adults and CHF 6 for kids. There is an abundance of space to skate on the lake and you really will be ice skating with a fairytale background.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is allowed on Oeschinen Lake between January and March when the ice is thick enough. You will have to bring your own ice drill and fishing equipment though, plus buy a fishing license.

The fishing licenses are available from the Tourist Center in Kandersteg or at the Alphüsi Food Truck. They cost CHF 32 for adults and CHF 20 for kids.

The fishing is excellent but it is a bit chilly!

Best Time to Visit Oeschinen Lake

If you have a choice of when to visit Oeschinen Lake, then I would recommend June and early September as the best months. June and early September have excellent weather and it is less busy than the holiday months of July and August.

You should have clear days to see the lake in all its glory and have access to all the summer activities and hiking trails too.

If you want to visit in winter, then January through to March is when the cable cars and slopes are open.

Best Places to Stay Near Oeschinen Lake

Lake Oeschinen is so beautiful that leaving it is not easy. Luckily, there are two hotels right along the lake shore where you can stay for a night or two.

Arva – Berghaus am Oeschinensee and Berghotel Oeschinensee offer excellent accommodation and each has a restaurant too. Imagine seeing the sunset and sunrise with beautiful Lake Oeschinen in the background.

In Nearby Kandersteg

You also have the option to stay in Kandersteg Village at the bottom of the hill below the lake. There are lots of different hotels to choose from including an affordable campsite in the summer.

Some of the top hotels in Kandersteg include Belle Epoque Hotel Victoria and Blümlisalp , plus there is lots to do in Kandersteg too. So, although you can spend the night up at the lake, there are a lot more options and activities down in Kandersteg.

Where to Eat At Oeschinen Lake

There are 4 places to eat around Oeschinen Lake, and these include the two hotels I mentioned above, Arva – Berghaus am Oeschinensee and Berghotel Oeschinensee as well as Restaurant Zur Sennhütte and Berghaus Unterbärgli which is a hike up the valley on the Panorama Trail.

All the restaurants offer excellent food and drinks with a varied menu. The views across the lake from all of them are spectacular, but it might be best to book in advance as they can get very busy.

Not all the restaurants stay open over winter but a few of them do so you always have somewhere to have lunch while at Lake Oeschinen.

Tips When Visiting Oeschinen Lake

Oeschinensee Lake

  • It takes about 45 minutes to an hour from the bottom gondola station to get to the lake, so arrive early to maximize your time
  • Arrive early and get the first cable car at 8:30 to get ahead of the crowds
  • Take a picnic and swimming gear in the summer for a lovely lunch
  • Try and pick a clear day to visit the lake as it looks its bluest in the sunshine
  • Take care when hiking as some of the trails are very steep
  • Bring your fishing gear with you as the fishing is excellent
  • Sledding is the most fun way to get down the mountain in winter
  • Only pick hiking trails you are fit enough to manage
  • Don’t forget that the last cable car leaves at 5:30 pm
  • Hiking back down to Kandersteg is lovely if you have the time
  • There is a bus to the lake from the mountain station for less abled walkers, and anyone can jump on if there is space

History of Lake Oeschinen

Lake Oeschinen was formed around 3200 years ago when several massive landslides occurred that brought a large mass of material down from the Doldenhorn. This material blocked the valley and formed a dam that created the lake you see today.

Of course, the material is porous, so there is a small river, called Öschibach that starts underground then tumbles downhill from Lake Oeschinen and joins the Kander River in the valley below. This underground drainage is one of the reasons the level of the lake also varies so much throughout the year . This is because the amount of snow and glacier melt does not match the outflow exactly.

You can also see obvious marks of the former landslide when you are up at the lake. You have to look above the Doldenhornhütte to see them.

Alpine Kandersteg

1-Getting-an-adrenaline-rush-on-the-Klettersteig.jpg

Traditional, yet modern. Buzzing with activity, but filled with peaceful pockets of relaxation. Where the Kloster Dhammapala (a serene Buddhist monastery) huddles in the shadow of the Klettersteig (a heart-pumping level-4 climbing path). Whatever paradox you're looking for can be found in Kandersteg, your Backroads gateway to a spectacular alpine adventure and the starting point of our Switzerland Family Multisport trip . Without a doubt, Kandersteg is one of my favorite places on earth. In fact, if I could convince my husband to give up his job and move to Switzerland, I'd be writing this right now in the shadow of the Blüemlisalp from my very own cheery Swiss chalet. Surrounded by picture-perfect peaks, the town is the ideal location for a low-key weekend before a Backroads trip - but also as a base for the adrenaline junkie who wants to scale towering cliffs or paraglide off a rocky ridge.

cow-parade.jpg

A village of approximately 1,200 souls, Kandersteg is nestled in the Bernese Oberland (Highlands) southwest of Interlaken (about a 2.5 hour train ride from Zürich). It's not a transportation hub - in fact, it's at the end of a road. The only routes continuing from Kandersteg are via train (through the 100-year-old Lötschberg Tunnel) or by hiking over the windswept Gemmi Pass (following in the footsteps of Mark Twain, Pablo Picasso and Sherlock Holmes). However, don't come expecting a dead-end village with broken signs hanging from rusty hinges. Amidst the traditional architecture and main street cow processions (hey, they have to get up to the grassy hillsides somehow!), the village maintains an up-to-date, lightly international vibe.

mountain2.jpg

You'll definitely hear Swiss-German as you stroll past a bäckerei (bakery), but keep your ears open for a melodious mix of several other languages floating on the breeze. Not only is Kandersteg a mecca for hikers from around the globe, it's also home to the Kandersteg International Scout Centre , welcoming young people from more than 40 nations every year. It's always fun to try to guess the scouts' countries of origin - it's easiest when a bunch of kids in kilts get off the train! Even when the streets are overrun with visitors, Kandersteg still has a small-town feel . The owner of the grocery store always had my nusstorte pastry waiting on Saturday morning. The bank manager, out for a run, would stop by to update me with new information on an ATM fiasco. The Concours (horse-jumping festival), held every July, is reminiscent of a Midwestern county fair - with a Swiss twist (Wisconsin 4-H events never included a Rick Springfield doppelgänger dancing on my table whilst playing the alphorn)!

With The Giant Whisk

I hope you'll one day get the chance to experience Kandersteg. Sleep with your windows open and wake at 7 a.m. to church bells tolling in the crisp alpine air. Jog along the banks of the river Kander or relax in the grass along the Muggeseeli. Dance the night away to an Austrian band singing John Denver classics . Take selfies with the giant whisk or panoramas of the snow-capped peaks. Consult your trail map while savoring a bar of Swiss chocolate. Crack open your laptop and send a beautiful photo to friends at home as you sit in a chalet built in 1643. Kandersteg is the ideal balance of old-fashioned and modern . Relaxation and exhilaration. The ultimate scenic grandeur hovering over the fragile beauty of a wildflower. A strong native identity with hints of international flair. Got your hiking shoes on and camera in hand? The mountains are waiting.

The Hike To This Alpine Lake In Switzerland Is Just As Dazzling As Its Bright Blue Water

A trip to the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland feels like you're stepping straight into a fairytale. In the colder months, the area looks like a winter wonderland with some of the best skiing in Switzerland and resorts and spas offering a luxurious playground that attracts jet-setters from around the world. In the spring and summer, the snow melts to reveal a breathtaking landscape of green meadows scattered with wildflowers, rugged mountains, and alpine lakes. The lakes nestled within the Swiss Alps are known for their stunning color — an almost shocking shade of turquoise caused by tiny bits of sediment that are washed into the lake as nearby glaciers melt.

Switzerland has around 1,500 incredibly picturesque lakes, but Oeschinen Lake is one of the most beautiful. The lake and surrounding scenery are so epic that Oeschinensee is included in the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site. Oeschinen Lake is a popular destination for outdoor recreation within the Bernese Oberland area. During the warmest months, you can even take a swim in the sparkling blue-green water. Surrounding the lake, you'll find an incredible hiking trail with some of the best views in Switzerland.

Hiking Oeschinen Lake

The easiest way to reach Oeschinen Lake is to take the cable car from the quaint little town of Kandersteg. Kandersteg is located a little over two hours from Zurich and about an hour from Bern by train. Tickets up to the lake on the cable car cost just under $30, and if you have the Swiss Travel Pass, you can get a 50% discount. Return tickets cost about $36. It's also possible to hike from Kandersteg to the lake, but you'll save a lot of time and energy by taking the cable car.

The Oeschinensee Panorama Hike is considered challenging. There are steep climbs, uneven footing, and loose rocks, according to AllTrails reviews . That said, you'll be rewarded with some of the best views in Switzerland. Remember that there isn't much shade on the hike, so it's a good idea to pack sun protection. The hike is 4.5 miles long and has an elevation gain of over 1,500 feet. Most hikers complete it in about three hours.

In an AllTrails review posted in September 2023, one hiker highly recommended the loop trail and mentioned there are a few places to stop for food and drinks along the way: "Definitely do this clockwise, you have amazing views and it is much, much easier this way. I would rate this moderate clockwise but hard counter-clockwise. Also, if you go clockwise, you can go for a swim almost at the end and then head up," he said.

Where To Stay

The closest town to Oeschinen Lake is Kandersteg. This charming European destination is the perfect picture of old-world charm. Surrounded by the majestic Swiss Alps, the little village is home to about 1,300 people. Wooden Swiss chalets line the streets, and cozy local restaurants serve traditional Swiss cuisine.

Visitors who hope to enjoy the natural beauty of Oeschinen Lake and hike the trails will find a variety of accommodations in town. Options range from laid-back bed and breakfasts to luxurious private chalets. Basic rooms start at about $120, and a 3-star hotel and spa is about $230. Airbnb is another option for finding accommodations, with prices starting around $130 per night.

The closest accommodation to Oeschinen Lake and the Panoramic Hiking Trail is Berghotel Oeschinenesee, right on the bank of the sparkling water. Originally constructed in 1892, the hotel has remained family-owned for five generations. There is a tasty restaurant with a large outdoor seating area overlooking the lake that serves up dishes like organic lamb raised on the family's farm. The hotel is open during the winter from December to March and during the summer from May until October. It can only be reached by foot or by taking the cable car. You will need to visit the hotel's website and call or email for rates and availability -- and definitely look into the Fondue2Go boxes to eat outside.

Kandersteg-Allmenalp via ferrata

TALK (Tourismus Adelboden-Lenk-Kandersteg) AG äussere Dorfstrasse 26 3718 Kandersteg Phone  +41 (0)33 675 80 80 kandersteg.ch

The Kandersteg, a 350-metre high wall, is a direct route which is not really suitable for anxious beginners. However, there are regular platforms where you can stop off and calm that beating heart.

A via ferrata in stunning countryside, along a 350-metre high wall, arranged in a series of columns and gorges, over which - and through which - the Allmibach flows, creating four waterfalls. For 20 years, paragliders have found promising thermals above this wall, which gets the full benefit of the morning sun. Since summer 2005, via ferrata climbers too have been making the climb, at a point not far from the northern end of the Lötschbergtunnel, to reach a cleverly laid-out via ferrata with a number of surprises in store. It is a route which does not artificially seek out the vertical, but does not shy away from it either. The Köppel brothers (who helped to design the Leukerbad via ferrata, the longest and most demanding in Switzerland) worked on the Kandersteg-Allmenalp via ferrata. As a result, the northern and southern ends of the Gemmi Pass, with its various climbs dating from the 18th century which can still evoke fear today, have modern iron ways for mountain sports enthusiasts who deliberately seek out the sensation of vertigo, and with safety in mind. Difficulty K4; the key to the climb is the vertical wall shortly after the start, with the most spectacular passage being the route below and above the roof overhang. Two three-rope bridges, each around 30 metres in length, cross the Allmibach; instead of using the upper bridge, there is also the option of using a Tyrolienne traverse to skim over the water. Two more Tyrolienne traverses are planned, leading from the via ferrata off to the right, to the rocky head and then back down to the climb. These should guarantee even more of that adrenalin buzz. The Kandersteg-Allmenalp via ferrata is open from the start of June to mid-October, when the Allmenalp cable-car is running. Warning: construction is during June 2005; official opening on July 30, 2005. Starting-point Kandersteg rail station (1,176 m) or Allmenalp-Luftseilbahn valley station (1,181 m) to the south-west of the village. Walk-in From Kandersteg rail station, take the hiking route into the valley. Where the Allmibach flows into the river Kander, turn right and to the north of the stream, reaching the start of the via ferrata at roughly 1,250 m. From the Allmenalp-Luftseilbahn valley station, cross farmland and a private bridge over the stream to join the route already mentioned. Route Climb, keeping to the left, along a 100-metre high wall, vertical in places. Cross a three-rope bridge over the Allmibach. A grassed slope leads to a step, with a roof which projects over it by 10 metres and which is conquered using a unique piece of design (a suspended walkway and a ladder which turns through 180 degrees). To the left of the second-lowest waterfall, the climb rises to an edge, behind which the Allmibach roars and falls. A second three-rope bridge crosses it again - brave via ferrata climbers naturally elect for the option further up, involving travel along a 40-metre long suspended rope. To finish, there is a final wall to the exit point, at around 1,600 m. It is a 20-minute walk up to the Undere Allme (1,723 m) with the mountain station of the Allmenalpbahn and the "Beiz-" (inn). Descent By cable-car. Alternatively, on foot via Ryharts and Schneitböde in 1 _ hours. Alternatively, take a tandem paraglider flight!
