15 Nov The Travels of Rizal

Disillusioned with how Filipinos in the Philippines were regarded as second-class citizens in institutions of learning and elsewhere, the National Hero Jose Rizal left the country in May 1882 to pursue further studies abroad. He enrolled in a course in medicine at the Universidad Central de Madrid in Spain. In June 1883, he traveled to France to observe how medicine was being practiced there.

After his three-month sojourn in France, Rizal returned to Madrid and thought about publishing a book that exposed the colonial relationship of Spain and the Philippines. This idea was realized in March 1887, with the publication of the novel Noli Me Tangere in Germany.

Rizal was actively involved in the Propaganda movement, composed of Filipinos in Spain who sought to direct the attention of Spaniards to the concerns of the Spanish colony in the Philippines. He wrote articles for publications in Manila and abroad; convened with overseas Filipinos to discuss their duty to the country; and called on Spanish authorities to institute reforms in the Philippines, such as granting freedom of the press and Filipino representation in the Spanish Cortes.

Rizal returned to Manila in August 1887, after five years in Europe. However, his homecoming was met by the friars’ furor over Noli Me Tangere . The Archbishop of Manila issued an order banning the possession and reading of the novel, an order that was later reinforced by the governor-general. Six months later, pressured by the Spanish authorities as well as by his family and friends to leave the country and avoid further persecution, Rizal left Manila for Hong Kong.

From Hong Kong, Rizal traveled to Macau and Japan before going to America. Entering San Francisco, California, in April 1888, he visited the states of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Illinois, and New York. He jotted down his observations of the landscape in his diary.

Rizal arrived in England in May 1888. In August, he was admitted to the British Museum, where he copied Antonio de Morga’s massive study of the Philippines, Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas , which Rizal later annotated for publication “as a gift to the Filipinos.” In the museum he devoted his time reading all the sources on Philippine history that he could find. He kept up his correspondence with various people, including his family, who were being oppressed by the Spanish religious landowners; the Filipino patriots in Spain; and his Austrian friend, Ferdinand Blumentritt, with whom he planned to form an association of Philippine scholars. From 1888 to 1890 he shuttled between London and Paris, where he wrote ethnographic and history-related studies, as well as political articles. He also frequently visited Spain, where he met with fellow Filipino intellectuals like Marcelo H. del Pilar, Mariano Ponce, and Graciano Lopez-Jaena.

In March 1891, Rizal finished writing his second novel, El Filibusterism o, in France. He planned to publish the book in Belgium, but was financially hard up. His brother’s support from back home was delayed in coming, and he was scrimping on meals and expenses. Finally, in September 1890, El Filibusterismo was published in Ghent using donations from Rizal’s friends.

Meanwhile, a rivalry had ensued between Rizal and del Pilar over the leadership of the Asociación Hispano Filipino in Spain. Rizal decided to leave Europe to avoid the worsening rift between the Rizalistas and Pilaristas, and to help maintain unity among Filipino expatriates. After staying for some time in Hong Kong, where he practiced medicine and planned to build a “New Calamba” by relocating landless Filipinos to Borneo, Rizal came home to the Philippines in June 1892.

Reflection Paper: The First Filipino

Lara Cagayan

Advent of a National Hero Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines and pride of the Malayan race, was born on June 19, 1861, in the town of Calamba, Laguna. He was the seventh child in a family of 11 children (2 boys and 9 girls). Both his parents were educated and belonged to distinguished families. His father, Francisco Mercado Rizal, an industrious farmer whom Rizal called "a model of fathers," came from Biñan, Laguna; while his mother, Teodora Alonzo y Quintos, a highly cultured and accomplished woman whom Rizal called "loving and prudent mother," was born in Meisic, Sta. Cruz, Manila. At the age of 3, he learned the alphabet from his mother; at 5, while learning to read and write, he already showed inclinations to be an artist. He astounded his family and relatives by his pencil drawings and sketches and by his moldings of clay. At the age 8, he wrote a Tagalog poem, "Sa Aking Mga Kabata," the theme of which revolves on the love of one's language. In 1877, at the age of 16, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with an average of "excellent" from the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. In the same year, he enrolled in Philosophy and Letters at the University of Santo Tomas, while at the same time took courses leading to the degree of surveyor and expert assessor at the Ateneo. He finished the latter course on March 21, 1877 and passed the Surveyor's examination on May 21, 1878; but because of his age, 17, he was not granted license to practice the profession until December 30, 1881. In 1878, he enrolled in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas but had to stop in his studies when he felt that the Filipino students were being discriminated upon by their Dominican tutors. CHAPTER 2 Childhood Years in Calamba Jose Rizal, like many Filipino boys, had many beautiful memories of childhood. His was a happy home, filled with parental affection, impregnated with family joys, and sanctified by prayers. In the midst of sue peaceful, refined, God-loving family, he spent the early years of his childhood. The beauties of Calamba impressed him as a growing child and deeply influenced his mind and character. The happiest period of his life was truly his childhood days in his natal town.

Stephen Clarence Tacud

Marvin D . Baronda

Growing up under Spanish rule, his early life, as depicted by Guerrero, sheds light on the challenges faced by his fellow Filipinos. He was the seventh child of Francisco Engracio Rizal Mercado y Alejandro and Teodora Morales Alonzo Realonda y Quintos. Raised in a family belonging to the affluent principalia class, Rizal received his initial education from his mother, Teodora, who instilled in him the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. In 1872, at the age of 11, Rizal continued his education at the Ateneo de Manila, a Jesuit school in Manila, where he excelled in his studies and demonstrated proficiency in various subjects. Despite his academic achievements, Rizal faced family troubles when his mother was unjustly imprisoned in 1871. This incident fueled Rizal's passion for justice and social reforms. In 1877, he enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas to study medicine but became disenchanted with the discrimination against Filipino students. This led him to transfer to the Universidad Central de Madrid in Spain, where he completed degrees in medicine and philosophy and letters. Rizal's experiences in Spain, where he became actively involved in the reform movement, significantly shaped his perspectives and convictions, laying the groundwork for his pivotal role as a national hero and advocate for Philippine independence. José Rizal's early years were marked not only by academic excellence but also by exposure to the cultural and intellectual influences of his environment. His family background in Calamba exposed him to the customs and traditions of the local community, fostering a deep sense of identity and pride in his Filipino heritage. Furthermore, his mother, Teodora, a well-educated woman, played a pivotal role in shaping his character and intellectual curiosity. During his time at the Ateneo de Manila, Rizal not only excelled in academics but also showcased his talents in various extracurricular activities. He was proficient in art, literature, and languages, setting the stage for his future roles as a writer and nationalist. Additionally, the social and political atmosphere in the Philippines during that period, marked by unrest and discontent, likely influenced Rizal's growing awareness of the need for reforms in the country. The family's ordeal with Teodora's imprisonment left an indelible mark on Rizal, strengthening his resolve to fight against injustice and advocate for social change. This early exposure to the flaws in the colonial system fueled his commitment to addressing the social issues plaguing his homeland. Rizal's decision to pursue higher education in Spain was a significant turning point. The move allowed him not only to expand his academic horizons but also to immerse himself in European culture and philosophy. His experiences in Madrid broadened his perspectives, and he became increasingly involved in the reform movement, collaborating with fellow Filipinos seeking political change and equal rights for their

Leon Maria Guerrero y Francisco was born on March 24, 1915, in Manila. He was a Filipino author and a diplomat. He is such a well-known writer for his successful translations of Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo and a biography of Rizal. The author of "The First Filipino" believed that Jose Rizal is the First Filipino that shows great patriotism and fondness for his compatriots. The book is a biography of Jose Rizal it completely and creatively covers the various life of Jose Rizal starting from his childhood and education, political and literary activities wherein Guererro explores Rizal's involvement in political movements, his literary works and his impact on Philippine society. It also wholly examines Rizal's tragic end and the enduring influence he left behind.

Renew an adult passport

Find out if you can renew your passport or need a new one. Learn how to renew your passport by mail, get it changed or corrected, or what to do if it expires soon.

Renew early. Passport processing times  vary. And some countries and airlines deny entry if your passport expires in less than 6 months.

Determine if you can renew your passport

If any of the following are true, you cannot renew your U.S. passport and must instead apply for a new passport in person using Form DS-11:

  • Issued before your 16th birthday
  • Issued more than 15 years ago
  • Damaged, lost, or stolen. Learn how to report a lost or stolen passport.
  • Issued in your previous name, and you do not have a legal document like a marriage license to prove your legal name change

If none of the above situations are true, you can renew your U.S. passport.

Can you renew an expired passport?

You can renew an expired passport, but only if it was issued within the last 15 years.

How to renew your passport and what documents you will need

Passports can only be renewed by mail, and the renewal process for passport books and cards is the same. You will select which type of passport you want when you fill out the application form. Online renewals are currently paused. Because it can take up to three months to process your application, it is important to renew your passport before it expires.

Typically, you will need the following items to renew your passport:

  • You can fill out Form DS-82 online , or
  • Download Form DS-82 and fill it out by hand, or
  • Find your local passport acceptance facility or regional agency and pick up a copy.
  • Passport photo
  • Passport fee
  • Your most recent passport - Your most recent passport will be mailed back to you separately after your new passport is mailed.
  • Name change documentation, if necessary

Learn how to submit all your documentation and passport fees and where to mail them.

Check with the Department of State to find out the current processing times for passport renewals .

If you need your passport quickly

Learn how and where to get your passport fast for emergency or urgent travel or to get expedited processing. The time it takes for each varies throughout the year, and there may be additional fees. Use the fee calculator or chart.

Check the status of your passport renewal

Learn how to check the status of your passport renewal online . Or check its status by phone (call wait times may be long).

If you need to change your name or correct your passport

After you receive your renewed passport, if you change your name or find an error, you will need to get an updated one to reflect the change. The process, cost, and forms you need depend on how long you have had your current passport. Follow the steps from the State Department to change your name or correct your passport.

If you are outside the U.S.

Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate near you to request a passport while outside the U.S.

If you need help with your passport application

If you have questions about your U.S. passport, the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) can help. Get contact information for NPIC and find out when to contact them based on when you are traveling.

Be aware of passport expiration rules for your destination

Some countries and airlines will not allow a U.S. passport holder to enter if their passport expires in less than 6 months.

Check your destination country's U.S. passport expiration rules on the  Department of State's country information page .

  • On the left, search for the country name in the "learn about your destination" box.
  • On that country's page, look for "passport validity."

Resort plants mangroves to replace forest it destroyed; what's next in ongoing DEP case

A Port St. Lucie resort that illegally hacked about 944 mangrove trees to nubs last year has planted about 2,780 new ones, which the state will inspect and monitor quarterly in the first year and annually for the next four years.

Sandpiper Bay Resort , part of the Trademark Collection by Wyndham , must replace any trees that die as well as prepare an alternative plan if the trees don't grow after two years. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection aims for 80%, or 2,224 trees, to survive.

The mangrove forest, estimated to be at least 25-50 years old, could take at least 25 years to regrow to its former glory, said Keith Rossin, co-founder of MANG nursery in West Palm Beach, which supplied the new trees.

Mangled mangroves: Case shows need for greater environmental responsibility

The resort has paid both its fines , among the steepest in state history: $110,395 to DEP and $72,000 to St. Lucie County to spend on mangrove restoration at the Bear Point Sanctuary on the Indian River Lagoon in Fort Pierce.

The resort contracted workers to cut down the forest of red, white and black mangroves along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River in April 2023. They leveled a half-acre, a 961-foot-long swath about the length of the Caribbean Princess cruise ship . They covered the nubs with sand, which washed into the river, potentially affecting seagrasses.

The destruction created a beachfront and unobstructed view of the river from the pool.

The resort blamed a tornado for yanking out the trees; however, the  National Weather Service  told TCPalm there was no twister. At worst, a tornado more likely would have removed the trees’ leaves, not entirely knocked down nearly 1,000 mature trees, said Lorae Simpson, a Florida Oceanographic Society scientist in Stuart.

The resort told DEP it didn’t know  Florida law protects mangroves  or that it needed a permit or a professional trimmer to cut them.

Store Capital Acquisitions LLC owns the property and leases it to  Altitude Hospitality LLC , which paid $55 million for the former  Club Med  in 2022. The 216-acre resort has 335 guest rooms, banquet facilities and a golf course.

2023 timeline

A Timeline of Kate Middleton's Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

From her abdominal surgery in January to when she began preventative chemo, here's everything we know about the Princess of Wales's diagnosis and treatment.

Kensington Palace did not specify when Kate learned she had cancer, only saying she was. made aware of the diagnosis "once post-operative tests had been completed and results reviewed." Here, a full timeline of the Princess of Wales's cancer diagnosis and treatment:

January 16: Kate undergoes planned abdominal surgery.

Kate: grace under pressure.

Kate: Grace Under Pressure

Kensington Palace publicly shared the news of her surgery a day later. "Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales was admitted to The London Clinic yesterday for planned abdominal surgery," Kensington Palace said in a statement . "The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery. Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

They added, "The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private." At the time, it was understood her surgery was not cancerous.

January 29: Kate is discharged from the London Clinic.

After thirteen days in the hospital, Kate was discharged . (Coincidentally, on the same day King Charles was discharged from the same hospital .)

"The Princess of Wales has returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery from surgery. She is making good progress," Kensington Palace said in a statement . "The Prince and Princess wish to say a huge thank you to the entire team at The London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they have provided. The Wales family continues to be grateful for the well wishes they have received from around the world."

She began recuperating at home at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor.

Sometime in February: Kate begins chemotherapy treatment.

Following her surgery, post-operative tests found cancer, and at some point in late February, Kate began "a course of preventative chemotherapy," according to a Palace spokesperson.

"The surgery was successful," Kate later shared in a video message . "However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment. This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family."

March 22: Kensington Palace announces Kate has cancer, and releases personal message from the Princess.

preview for Kate Middleton Speaks Out About Her Cancer Diagnosis

News of Kate's cancer diagnosis was made public in March, along with a video message from the Princess ( watch above ). The Palace said they will not be sharing what type of cancer Kate has. "The Princess has a right to medical privacy, as we all do," a Palace spokesperson said.

The Palace has not shared a specific timeline regarding Kate's recovery, end to her chemotherapy treatment, or when she could return to her public duties . In her message, Kate said, "My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery."

A day after Kate's diagnosis was made public, Will and Kate thanked the public for their well wishes . A Kensington Palace spokesperson said in a statement, "The Prince and Princess are both enormously touched by the kind messages from people here in the UK, across the Commonwealth and around the world in response to Her Royal Highness' message. They are extremely moved by the public's warmth and support and are grateful for the understanding of their request for privacy at this time."

April 29: Kate and William celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Kensington Palace shared a never-before-seen picture of the couple from their wedding day , taken by photographer Millie Pilkington (who just photographed King Charles and Queen Camilla for their 19th wedding anniversary ). "So excited and honored that they should wish to share it," Pilkington wrote on Instagram.

May 20: Kensington Palace gives an update on Kate's work.

Kensington Palace gave an update on the Princess of Wales's business task force , and a spokesperson said she was "excited" about the developments . However, the spokesperson added, "This should not be seen or reported on as Her Royal Highness returning to work. The work of The Prince and Princess’ projects is ‘always on,’ and that has been no different for the Centre over the past five months with a great deal of progress being made…Early childhood is a huge priority for the Princess and so she has been kept fully updated throughout the development of the Taskforce’s work and she has seen the report."

A senior royal aide also said "she will return to work when she has had the green light from doctors," but what that "green light" looks like is as yet unclear. The Palace has not provided any specific timeline for Kate's return to royal duties .

Donald J. Trump in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt.

By Jesse McKinley and Maggie Astor

  • May 30, 2024

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .
