Sadly, the last chance to watch live in the Rage Against the Machine reunion tour has passed for now. Rage Against the Machine’s reunion tour will begin on July 9th in East Troy, WI, rather than on March 31st in El Paso, TX. Only half of the 38-show tour has been postponed indefinitely. Rage Against the Machine, on the other hand, announced new dates for February, March, and April 2023.

When you asked, “Why did Rage Against the Machine cancel their current tour?”

During the North American leg’s second concert. On July 11th, 2022, in Chicago. We watched Zack de la Rocha injure his leg onstage and leave for a brief while before returning to the stage seated.

“I don’t know what happened to my leg right now,” Zack de la Rocha said of the injury night. We’re going to keep this crap going. This stage is crawlable for me. Tonight we’re going to play for you all.”

Here is also Zack De La Rocha’s press statement about canceling the 2023 tour dates so far:

“It’s been almost three months since Chicago, and I still look down at my leg in disbelief. Two years of waiting through the pandemic, hoping we would have an opening to be a band again and continue the work we started 30 some odd years ago. Rehearsing, training, reconciling, working our way back to form. Then one and a half shows into it and my tendon tears. Felt like a sick joke the universe played on me. As I write this I remind myself it’s just bad circumstance. Just a f***** up moment.

Unfortunately it is a moment that requires a lot of work and healing. I have a sever tear in my left Achilles tendon and only 8% of my tendon was left intact. And even that portion was severely compromised. It’s not simply a question of being able to perform again, but extends to basic functionality going forward. That’s why I’ve made the painful and difficult decision to cancel the remaining shows on our 2023 North American leg.

I hate cancelling shows. I hate disappointing our fans. You have all waited so patiently to see us and that is never lost on me. I never take that for granted. For you, I have the ultimate gratitude and respect.

To my brothers Tim, Brad, and Tom; to El P, Killer Mike, Trackstar, and the whole RTJ crew; to everyone on our production team: techs, cooks, drivers, assistants, security squad, to anyone and everyone who made the shows thus far possible, all my love and respect. I hope to see you very soon.”

Rage Against the Machine Announce Rescheduled Tour Dates for 2023

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

UPDATE (2/14): On Monday, Rage Against the Machine announced additional rescheduled dates for their tour, now slated for 2023. Along with their previously scheduled tour dates — which kickoff this summer — the group will hit the road again in February of next year.

“All tickets for the moved dates will be honored,” the group wrote. “Fans who would like a refund have until March 15th, 2022 and should contact your point of purchase.”

Among the stops are Oakland, Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Edmonton in Canada. Run the Jewels is set to join the tour as an opener.

Rage Against the Machine’s perpetually postponed reunion tour has been delayed yet again, with the group now set to kick off their Public Service Announcement Tour in July 2022.

The North American leg of the trek — which was originally scheduled to begin in March 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic forced a series of postponements — now begins July 9 in East Troy, Wisconsin, as the band announced Thursday that all 19 gigs from March 31 to May 23 will be rescheduled.

Rage Against the Machine noted that tickets for the postponed shows will be honored at the new dates, but fans can also request refunds starting Thursday for a 30-day window. Run the Jewels will still serve as a special guest on the tour.

“We will be back to you soon with the rerouted dates,” the band added. The North American leg is currently set to conclude with a five-night stand at New York’s Madison Square Garden in August.

Concerns about Rage Against the Machine’s 2022 tour dates first started to arise when the band was removed as a headliner from the 2022 Coachella festival, where they were previously announced as headliners after their 2020 and 2021 gigs at the fest were nixed due to the pandemic. On Thursday, organizers for the Boston Calling festival — which also booked Rage for a headlining set — announced that the band would no longer perform at that fest.

Rage Against the Machine Announce Rescheduled North American Dates for 2023

Rage Against the Machine Announce Rescheduled North American Dates for 2023

Rage Against the Machine have unveiled a fully revised North American tour itinerary after multiple postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After recently postponing the first leg of their 2022 tour, the band has rescheduled those dates for 2023. As previously reported, the band’s Summer 2022 dates will remain intact .

The 2023 leg kicks off February 22nd in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and run through a two-night stand in Detroit on April 1st and 2nd. Those shows are in addition to the summer 2022 run, which launches July 7th in East Troy, Wisconsin, and wraps up with a five-night stand at New York’s Madison Square Garden in August. Tickets for all shows are available via Ticketmaster .

RATM were slated to embark on their highly anticipated reunion tour in spring 2020, but those plans were shut down due to the pandemic. The band decided not to tour in 2021, with hopes of completing the entire trek in 2022. Now, those original spring 2020 shows will take place three years later than originally scheduled.

The good news is that Run the Jewels will still be on board as support for both the 2022 and 2023 legs. A full itinerary can be seen below.

Rage Against The Machine announce rescheduled ‘Public Service Announcement’ tour dates

The second leg of the tour will now commence from February 2023

Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello, Rage Against The Machine

Rage Against The Machine have shared their new tour itinerary, with half of their dates now set to take place in early 2023.

  • READ MORE:  Tom Morello: “In the past, I’ve wanted to use music as a battering ram for social justice”

The band, who first announced their second reunion back in 2019, were set to begin their ‘Public Service Announcement’ tour in March 2020. Ongoing complications surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, however, has forced the tour to be rescheduled several times over – the most recent of which came in January, where half the tour was postponed from April to July and the other half was postponed indefinitely.

Now, the band have confirmed that the North American tour will take place across two legs. The first will commence in July 2022, while the second will see the band performing from late February through to early April 2023. Run The Jewels , who were originally announced as the opening act for the tour, will retain that slot for every date except the band’s appearance at Festival D’Ete De Quebec in Quebec City.

The band have also announced that, while all purchased tickets will be honoured, those unable to attend the rescheduled dates must file a request for one by March 15. All remaining tickets for the band’s tour are available via their website .

2021 saw Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello release two new solo albums: ‘The Atlas Underground Fire’ and ‘The Atlas Underground Flood’. The albums featured contributions from acts such as Bruce Springsteen , Eddie Vedder , Bring Me The Horizon , IDLES and Chris Stapleton .

The latter, meanwhile, was praised as being “bold, brilliant and surprising”. “‘Flood’ finds Tom Morello out to prove that, just like his beloved electric guitar, he has a fascinating future indeed,” it read.

Tom Morello Talks Rage Against the Machine’s Reunion Tour, Band’s Future, and Ticket Prices

By Matthew Ismael Ruiz

Rage Against the Machines Tom Morello

Last July, on the second stop of their world tour in Chicago, Rage Against the Machine ’s frontman Zack de la Rocha severed his left Achilles tendon , leaving a mere eight inches of the tendon intact. He soldiered on for 17 shows—including a three-night run at Madison Square Garden—performing while seated on a flight case, but the group skipped the tour’s European leg , and, by October the band had canceled every remaining date , 38 in all. The shows have yet to be rescheduled. In a new interview with Rolling Stone , guitarist Tom Morello has reflected on the truncated tour, the possibility of rescheduling the missed dates, and Rage Against the Machine’s recent nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame .

“Zack toughed it out that night,” Morello said. “And for the next 17 shows, he was more compelling as a frontman sitting on a box in the middle of the stage than 99 percent of the frontmen in the history of all time.” He also attempted to clear the air about which COVID-19 precautions were enforced at the shows (“No fans at any show in the history of Rage Against the Machine have ever had a vaccination requirement to be in the room. Ever.”) and their use of Ticketmaster’s controversial dynamic pricing.

Morello explained that with the exception of “about five to 10 percent,” every other ticket sold to the band’s shows cost $125. The exceptions were subject to dynamic pricing, which adjusts ticket prices to the most-wanted seats based on demand. The practice recently caused an uproar among fans of Bruce Springsteen, whose latest shows saw the face value of tickets climb as high as $4,000. Morello said every penny collected over $125 went to charity. “In New York City, we raised over a million dollars for activist organization charities,” he said. “There was a total of about six or seven million raised on that tour in what was basically a Robin Hood tactic.”

When pressed for details on when Rage Against the Machine might perform again, or whether or not they were even still a band, Morello demurred, saying he himself did not know.

“Rage Against the Machine is like the ring in Lord of the Rings ,” he said. “It drives men mad. It drives journalists mad. It drives record industry people mad. They want it. They want the thing, and they’re driven mad. If there are Rage shows, if there are not Rage shows, you’ll hear from the band. I do not know. When there is news, it will come from a collective statement from the band. There is no news.”

Rage Against the Machine are among the nominees for the 2023 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It is the fifth time the band has been nominated. The organization recently came under fire from Courtney Love, who criticized the Rock Hall’s “ sexist gatekeeping ” in an op-ed for The Guardian . Morello has said he will attend if the band is inducted, but avoided speculating why the group has been shut out four times.

“I do know there’s a funny mix of people that do the voting,” he said. “It’s people that are already in. There’s an age component. There’s a leaning mainstream component as well. I think that [fellow nominee] Willie Nelson deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and artists from various genres do as well. If you saw any of the Rage Against the Machine shows last summer, you’d be hard-pressed to make an argument against us.”

Morello is currently preparing for upcoming dates with his band the Freedom Fighters Orchestra. Last year, he joined Wayne Kramer’s MC5 revival on a new song called “Heavy Lifting.”

New Lollapalooza documentary highlights festival's progressive cultural legacy

"lolla: the story of lollapalooza," a paramount+ docuseries, features festival co-founder perry farrell, ice-t, trent reznor and more..

ratm 2023 tour dates

Since 1967's Summer of Love, the point at which popular culture and social change beautifully collide with the most significant impact has been a fertile one conjured by less than a dozen hands.

For three decades, one of those pair of hands has belonged to 65-year-old Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros band member Perry Farrell via the Lollapalooza Festival.

"Lollapalooza has created a space for society to mature and pursue the embrace of selfless, friendship-driven humanity," Farrell says in an interview with The Tennessean on a bright spring Saturday afternoon.

As the now Chicago-based but globally held and renowned festival prepares for its 27th iteration in August, its legacy is also being celebrated by "Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza," a three-part docuseries airing on Paramount+. Through interviews, extensive archival footage and first-hand accounts, Lollapalooza co-founder Farrell and festival performers, including Ice-T, Trent Reznor and Red Hot Chili Peppers member Flea, reconnect with the festival and reflect on its cultural significance.

The documentary is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and FunMeter in partnership with C3 Presents and is directed by Michael John Warren, the visionary behind Jay-Z's 20-year-old retrospective "Fade to Black."

Farrell and Warren, plus representatives of FunMeter's production company joined The Tennessean for an extensive conversation.

Lollapalooza's roots

Initially, the festival occurred because Farrell's work in the Los Angeles alt-pop and punk act Jane's Addiction was drawing to a close.

Ironically, this occurred as the band, via their "Ritual de lo Habitual" album and single "Been Caught Stealing," was the hottest act on alternative radio and a Grammy-nominated touring favorite benefitting from the latest era of MTV's cable boom.

However, 1990 also saw a trio of mid-tempo to near-ambient ballads — "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips, "It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette and Sinéad O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" — reach the top of the charts.

As a creator, Farrell is always one to provoke the trend that causes the wave.

Lollapalooza was also inspired by how far America's pop scene had strayed from a society where culture and change were synonymous.

Seeking that type of scene, Farrell headed to the U.K. in 1990 to perform at the Reading Festival as the Second Summer of Love era continued to grip the region.

Dance-ready Brit pop, classic East Coast U.S. and British punk, plus rock's hardest edges were all represented alongside a general era of good feeling.

Back in the United States in July 1991, Farrell and crew assembled nine other acts alongside Jane's Addiction for a 21-date North American tour. Yes, by 2023, roughly 20 times more acts were booked for the festival. However, the facets of the event's foundation that remain present in 2024 are profound.

Ushering in '90s era cultural evolution

"The Butthole Surfers' lead singer Gibby Haynes was walking around shoeless and firing buckshot in the air, while Henry Rollins, who looked like a muscled-out thug in jogging shorts, had set up a weight bench and was pumping iron," Farrell says.

"Then, a bunch of kids sitting in their houses playing in bands and watching MTV came out of their houses and went wild," he jokes.

Pop culture in the era found kids whose values did not align with the growing corporatization and materialism governing America's mainstream stage diving during punk shows at art houses and VFW halls. Until Lollapalooza, they were not gathering en masse, like their parents did, in amphitheaters and open fields.

Twenty-one times in the summer 1991, the festival day's starkest highlight was Farrell joining Los Angeles rap provocateur Ice-T's punk band Bodycount to perform a charged take on Sly and the Family Stone's 1969 track "Don't Call Me N-----, Whitey."

1991's inaugural Lollapalooza Festival opened only 137 days after Black motorist Rodney King was beaten by police in Los Angeles.

Regarding toeing the line between honesty and obscenity in 1991, a point about Farrell, and by extension Lollapalooza, becomes apparent.

"You can only have that moment occur in a space where everyone feels welcome," Farrell says.

"For three decades, at Lollapalooza, people from all walks of life, regardless of background, have had conversations governed by honest, intentional, respectful and responsible understanding — and yes, that means that the National Rifle Association and gun-control activists had booths next to each other — without causing a riot," says Warren.

On two occasions, Lollapalooza has successfully platformed the regeneration of global pop culture. That, more than the festival's revenue (in 2023, the American Lollapalooza festival contributed $422 million to Chicago's economy), motivates Farrell's continued desire to book the event.

In 1994, Lollapalooza's touring schedule intersected with events honoring Woodstock's 25th anniversary. Between both events, 100 acts were featured.

By 1998, Lollapalooza had been canceled. Some feel the lack of a headlining performer was to blame; others cite the mainstreaming of alternative rock as leading to the genre's declining popularity.

Lollapalooza's modern legacy

The festival was revived in 2005 to raise funds for Chicago's Grant Park and support arts education in Chicago's public school system. Just five years later, Lady Gaga — who had appeared as a side-stage act in 2007 — followed in a tradition hearkening back to Cypress Hill and Rage Against the Machine as former side-stage artists who can point to Lollapalooza as heralding their headliner-level acclaim.

"Underground punk kids will always make art for art's sake to reinvent culture and push the envelope forward," says Warren.

The immediacy at which digital, real-time, and streaming interactions deliver cultural evolution to a now perpetually global marketplace continues to benefit Lollapalooza. For the past decade, the festival has evolved into a genuinely intercontinental event, with dates booked in Asia, Europe, and South America.

"Beyond (merely) just being social, the festival occupying the same global and social system in which we're now forced to live, at all times, makes the love people have in their hearts that (governs our desires) do harder work not ever to feel phony," Farrell says.

When asked what excites him the most about what's forthcoming with the festival and his life in general, he pauses, then makes a statement that cycles society, in real time, back to what motivated him in 1991.

"I'm bored with culture's mainstream being so preoccupied with horrifying news stories," says Farrell. "I'd rather be more concerned with what Lollapalooza can do to make the world a better place."
