Using Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART)

  • Frequently Asked Questions

San Jose and San Francisco are only 50 miles apart. You can travel between the two cities using a bus, train, or automobile.

But no matter how you travel, there are drawbacks. After you get to San Francisco, it can be a long walk to the most popular San Francisco sights and hotels. Ridesharing surge pricing can run up your bill fast. Public transit buses and trams might fill the gap, but they're a hassle if you're traveling with luggage or small children.

Choosing the best transportation for your trip is tricky. This guide can help you decide what's best.

How to Get from San Jose to San Francisco

These are the options to consider:

  • Train: 1 to 1.5 hours, $12
  • Bus: 1 to 2 hours, $10
  • Car: 50 miles, 1 to 2.5 hours, no tolls

If you're looking for a low cost and can walk to your destination from where you get off, think about taking a bus. However, Caltrain costs only a couple of dollars more, stops in more places, and you can take more items on board (including bicycles).

If you're in a hurry and it's not rush hour, driving is the fastest way to go. Caltrain's tracks are traffic jam-free during rush hour and will get you there faster.

Caltrain is the only train between San Francisco and San Jose. You can get on at Diridon Station in downtown San Jose or Santa Clara, Palo Alto, Redwood City, and Millbrae. The San Francisco station is at Fourth and King Streets.

Caltrain is also the best way to get to a San Francisco 49ers football game in Santa Clara, a San Jose Sharks hockey game in downtown San Jose, or a San Francisco Giants baseball game at Oracle Park.

Caltrain runs frequent trains about 20 hours a day. Local trains take 90 minutes to reach San Francisco, but Baby Bullet and limited-stop trains are faster. The Caltrain mobile ticketing app is fast and easy to use, but you can also buy your ticket at the station or on the Caltrain website . Caltrain's Twitter account shares information on delays and other news.

From the Caltrain station, it's a 30-minute walk to Union Square. It takes an hour to walk to Fisherman's Wharf. Golden Gate Park is more than four miles away.

For decades, people have been asking: "Can you take BART from San Jose to San Francisco?" but it's not entirely possible yet. Currently, BART runs on the east side of the San Francisco Bay between Oakland and Milipitas. It may take another 10 years for it to reach downtown San Jose. And even then, you'll have to go to Oakland to catch a train to San Francisco.

That doesn't mean BART is useless for your trip. If you want to go to the Mission District, Civic Center, Market Street, Union Square, or the Embarcadero, transfer from CalTrain to BART in Millbrae.

What you need to know about the trip from Millbrae to San Francisco is in the guide to getting from SFO to San Francisco on BART . You can see schedules and buy tickets on the BART website or use the BART app .

Public transit buses are impractical because of too many transfers and connections, but Flixbus is a low-priced commercial bus that's worth a look. They run a handful of buses per day from downtown San Jose to the Embarcardero in San Francisco, which takes 50-90 minutes, depending on traffic. You can take one checked bag and one carry-on. Get schedules, find pickup locations, and buy tickets on the Flixbus website .

Greyhound also runs from San Jose Diridon Station downtown to the San Francisco transit hub at 425 Mission Street. Their fares are low but beware of itineraries that go through Oakland, require transfers, and take up to two hours.

If you need to go from the San Jose Airport directly to San Francisco International, Monterey Air Bus runs buses every hour or two, and their reasonable rates are even lower if you book online.

At best, with no delays, the 50-mile car trip between San Jose and San Francisco is about an hour's drive. But no matter how much Northern Californians like to pretend it isn't so, Bay Area traffic consistently ranks among the worst in the country. During rush hour, that hour can stretch to two hours or more. It's easy to figure out when that happens by checking the carpool lane hours: 5 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. But don't think count on the carpool lane to save time: It's often as jammed up as the other lanes.

Freeway congestion aside, driving is by far the most flexible way to travel. You can go directly to anywhere in the city, without schlepping luggage (or yourself) from one mode of transit to another. But—and this is one of those big buts—San Francisco traffic congestion is among the world's worst. And trying to find a parking spot can give the most patient of drivers an uncontrollable case of road rage. To avoid that, use a parking app like ParkMe or Spot Hero to find parking lots and garages.

The obvious routes for your drive are US Highway 101 and I-280. You can get details of their pros and cons, along with all the sights along the way in the guide to driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco .

Try this hack if the predicted drive time is more than two hours. Take an impromptu tour of the peninsula on city streets. Get on El Camino Real near Santa Clara University and follow it north until it merges with Mission Street in San Francisco.

Best ways to get from San Jose to San Francisco

Car

1.  Car

San Jose and San Francisco are linked by two, nearly equidistant stretches of highway, Interstate 280 and Highway 101. Each route should get you to your destination in about an hour (busy morning and evening commute times can add thirty minutes or more). The Interstate 280 route is slightly lengthier, but often less congested and ultimately quicker than the 101, but check your traffic app of choice before choosing a route. If you don’t have a car, you can easily rent one with Getaround which offers an assortment of privately owned, shared vehicles within walking distance—no need to huff it to the airport—for any duration of time. Their app quickly scans your surroundings, and lets you unlock the doors to your rental in minutes. The relatively short distance between the cities also makes a ride hailing service such as Lyft and Uber an option with conventional fares averaging $65.

Bus

2.  Bus

You’ll see numerous coaches en route between San Jose to San Francisco, yet the bulk are private coaches shuttling employees to major tech firms such as Google and Facebook. For everyone else, there’s Greyhound which runs seven daily buses between San Jose’s Diridon Station and San Francisco’s shiny new Salesforce Transit Center . Hoping to appeal to a younger, tech-savvy crowd, the long-standing provider offers free WiFi, power outlets with every seat, and an app for e-ticketing and tracking your bus. Expect a ticket to run between $6-$15.

Train

3.  Train

Caltrain offers a compelling alternative to the busy freeways. The popular commuter rail line zips between San Jose’s Diridon Station and San Francisco’s Mission Bay station. One-way fare costs $10.50, and tickets must be purchased in advance from station vending machines. Nearly 50 trains run each day, with a regular trip duration of one and a half hours given the many stops along the way. Seek out the Baby Bullet express train for fewer stops and a shorter trip. San Jose’s Diridon station is a major hub for Greyhound, Amtrak, and San Jose’s VTA light rail system. From San Fransico’s Caltrain station you can walk to Oracle Stadium, the waterfront Embarcadero, and MUNI trains which can deliver to other points

Helicopter

4.  Helicopter

By 2023, Uber hopes to fly commuters from San Jose to San Francisco in just 15 minutes via  futuristic-looking, electrically powered, vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (or, eVTOL). Until then, travelers hoping to soar above traffic can secure a helicopter ride via Voom . For $250 each way, the Airbus company will find you a seat aboard a privately owned helicopter with a licensed flyer that’ll take you from San Jose to San Francisco in roughly 20 minutes. Trips can be booked online or via their app no less than one hour in advance. Passengers also have the option of booking ground transportation to the heliopad which is often at San Jose International Airport (SJC) and San Francisco International (SFO).

Top airline flying from San Francisco to San José

No water for a 5 hour flight entertainment not working seats with little room for knees when person in front of me reclined kept bumping my knees.

I don't think anyone actually reads these comments, so I won't spend much time on this submission. If you want to talk, you know how to reach me. The D/FW manager of Avianca (self-identified), Juan Calderon, insisted I buy an onward ticket from San Salvador even though I have diplomatic status in El Salvador and live here. It cost me $1,393 and Mr Calderon would not let me make the ticked flexible so I could get a refund. He went out of his way to be rude to me. He gave me seat 32K -- windowless window seat in the last row and did not offer to let me upgrade even though there were plenty of seats. I have flown well over a million miles in my life and this is the worst experience I have ever had. I would like a refund on the ticket I was forced to buy. Just awful!

This is the Spirit of Latino travel. And don’t even get me started on customer service.

Awful. I checked in online and there was no option to pay for baggage, at the airport when I checked in my baggage was received and Iwas not charged. When I got to LA during the boarding process I was told I didn't pay for baggage, the crew resolved I was let in the plane. When I got to my final destination my baggage was not there. It took me two days to receive my baggage. Bad service ever!

There was no food or drink service, couldn’t even get a glass of water for free. It was a long and expensive flight to not offer food or beverage on the plane.

It is better at the jfk than my home country. It was very easy and everything was on time.

There is no food. There is no in-inflight entertainment. The seats are cardboard. The airline is a living hellscape.

My experience was amazing! They helped my elderly mother board on early through a wheelchair and were accommodating to have us sit together since our seats were in different locations. When landing at the airport in GUA they were very helpful with full of hospitality.

No complimentary snacks food, beverage (not even water), pillow and blanket on a 6 hours long flight (including economy comfort). A low form of nickeling an diming. Lost a recurring passanger over a soda. Avianca never again.

Flight departure late. Got late in Colombia making us take a different flight next day. Avianca airport crew messed up my ticket so when a I got in Brazil I didn’t have a ticket for my destination. Had to buy a new ticket out of my pocket.

If you are pressed for time, or if you are unfamiliar with both the San Jose and San Francisco area, booking a rideshare service just might be for you.

This option is the closest thing you’ll get to riding a private vehicle on this list, and it’s the most convenient considering that you can choose your pick-up and drop-off locations.

You just need to input the details on the ridesharing app, book the ride you want, then wait for your driver to arrive at your pick-up location.

However, this option can also be the most expensive, and prices are also subject to surge increases.

San Jose is located south of San Francisco and takes about 45 minutes without traffic (don’t forget rush hour), so make sure to consider this when planning your trip.

The community has organized a 300-vehicle lowrider parade on Sunday to pay homage to the Latino roots and history of East San Jose, a hub for lowriding since its initial popularity in the 1940s. The San Jose Police Department will take part in the cruise with its own lowrider — a far cry from last year’s highway ramp closures which city and state leaders called racist and discriminatory for singling out Mexican Americans during the cultural event.

“SJPD has been working collaboratively with the United Lowrider Council of San Jose in creating a safe and vibrant Cinco de Mayo celebration this year,” a police spokesperson told San Jose Spotlight.

Last year, SJPD, Caltrans and California Highway Patrol closed 10 highway ramps, jamming traffic and making it nearly impossible for residents to get to and from festivities. Councilmembers Peter Ortiz, Domingo Candelas, Sergio Jimenez and Omar Torres called for increased communication between police and the community in the wake of the city lifting its decades-long cruising ban in 2022. SJPD officials spoke against lifting the ban at the time, saying it helped stop dangerous activities such as sideshows.

Ruben Mendez, president of lowrider club Eastside Riders SJ who has been cruising for more than 35 years, said he has hope this year’s festivities will go better than last year.

“I understand that there’s a few knuckleheads that are ruining it for everybody, but we just (have) to learn to not single out the whole group for one person,” he told San Jose Spotlight. “There’s a lot of good people out there that go out there with their kids, their grandkids, their girlfriends or wives.”

There will still be road closures this year along Barack Obama Boulevard, West Santa Clara Street and part of South Market Street encircling Plaza de Cesar Chavez on Saturday. Partial closures are also planned Sunday for East Santa Clara Street, South Market Street and South King Road, including the Highway 680 ramps. Caltrans and CHP will help with the ramp closures.

But Councilmember Ortiz said the police have kept their word and increased communication with residents. He has met with the community regularly, including the office of San Jose’s Consulate General of Mexico and the United Lowrider Council of San Jose, to prepare for the event. He said police have worked with stakeholders along the way. SJPD began sharing maps of the planned closures a month before the celebrations.

“We’re expecting it to be a smooth event and we encourage everyone to come out and experience the east side, enjoy tourism and make an event that everyone can remember,” Ortiz told San Jose Spotlight.

In addition to road closures, residents could see diversions to reduce traffic along East Santa Clara Street, South Market Street, South Fourth Street, South 10th Street, Alum Rock Avenue, King Road, Story Road, South Jackson Avenue, Ocala Avenue and Tully Road. Ramps along Highways 87 and 101 and Interstate 280 could be affected. Roosevelt Park will also be fenced off as usual due to resident concerns of vandalism and public drunkenness.

Mendez, whose dedication to lowriding began with a 1964 Chevrolet Impala, said his club will cruise the streets in the parade this weekend. He said the event is meaningful to him and the community, especially after they put so much time and money into their cars.

“It’s been in my blood. It’s in my family. It’s a thing that my uncle taught me that I’ve been involved with ever since,” he said. “It’s a passion for me.”

Breaking News

Economy | second-half goals help quakes beat lafc at raucous levi’s stadium, subscriber only, economy | san jose airport passenger rebound shows signs of losing altitude, weaker passenger pattern emerges at san jose aviation hub.

A Southwest Airlines jetliner travels over downtown San Jose on its way to San Jose International Airport, April 2024.

The airport handled 930,522 passengers in March — 13.4% above the passenger totals for February, but 3.6% below the passenger activity reported for March 2023. Over the 12 months that ended in March, the airport reported it handled 12.05 million passengers. That was down 0.4% from the 12.1 million passengers the South Bay travel hub accommodated during 2023.

The airport’s performance over the most recent 12-month period is far below the record heights San Jose achieved in 2019, the final year before the outbreak of the coronavirus and the resulting collapse of the worldwide travel industry due to government-imposed business shutdowns and transportation restrictions. The airport reported 15.65 million passengers in 2019, nearly 23% more.

“Prior to the pandemic, a significant portion of San Jose Airport’s traffic was driven by business travel,” airport officials said in emailed comments. “We suspect that the slow rebound in business travel, which is yet to fully recover globally, is having a significant impact on our recovery.”

The three major regional airports are all facing a feeble post-coronavirus recovery. Over the year-long period that ended in February 2024, Oakland International Airport handled 11.27 million passengers. That was 16% below the 13.38 million passengers Oakland accommodated in 2019.

San Jose airport officials, in the statement, also acknowledge the changes in air travel, saying, “We have welcomed the arrival of low-cost carriers, ZIPAIR and Spirit Airlines, that have entered the market to meet the growing demand for more leisure and family travel,”

ZIPAIR has added a flight between San Jose and Japan, which means six weekly departures from San Jose to Tokyo Narita International Airport.

Spirit Airlines has added nonstop flights between San Jose and the destinations of Los Angeles; Portland, Oregon; and the Baltimore-Washington region.

“Post-pandemic, we are adapting to the market,” the statement said.

Top 5 airlines serving from San Francisco to San José

Copa performed as expected for the amount of money I was willing to spend for the flight; it wasn’t exceptional but it was not bad in any way either. The crew was good; friendly and straightforward. The food was airplane food, so no expectations there and the entertainment was lacking but that was my fault for owning an IPhone with a charging port that’s not compatible with the rest of the world. I’d fly Copa again.

Left my bags in origin city on a business class ticket , spent about 2-3 days in the same clothes plus the flight .

the planes are not modern there are no phone chargers

As usual, the flight with normal legroom was not very comfortable, but the second flight was much better because we had paid for extra legroom. It was very nice to check our bags without an extra fee.

LOCKED MY BAG WITHOUT CONSENT. Had to have my zippers cut upon arrival in Costa Rica.

Some entertainment and food/snack service would have been nice

All the pessengers should be wait in a line útil the creo and piloto are arrived.

Planes seat could be bigger very uncomfortable for tall humans.

1 hour waiting for suitcases to come out traveling in business class and food in business class is a sandwich? Avoid Aeromexico .

No space reserved for anyone who didn’t have underseat in front of them. Made it inconvenient to get the backs secured. No inflight entertainment in the 190. Bring your own! Food was excellent and we were surprised to get a full breakfast.

Hated every minute of it. This flight should have only taken 1.5hrs but was delayed over 10hours. Now I am being told I cannot be compensated or refunded my ticket price or extra leg room, which I purchased but did not receive, because the airline is throwing the blame on the 3rd party I purchased tickets through and 3rd party putting the blame on airline. No one wants to help. They received their money and that's all they care about. Im going on 3 days of still trying to get to my final destination, had to cancel car rental, car insurance and hotel. Currently staying in airport until hotels open up. Thank you Lufthansa, Kayak, Underpricer and United for making this trip the worst ever.

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

United WiFi is consistently unusable (it can take 10 mins to load a single web page). If you need Wifi to do work, be prepared to lose half a day of productivity.

Awful. I got stuck next to a person carrying a dog and behind someone with a dog. People need to board these dogs downstairs. The cabin is crowded enough with your pets

Packed in like sardines, very uncomfortable. Sitting the aisle my shoulder was rammed into numerous times by rushing flight attendants. Also flight was very cold.

Beverage and food services are excellent. We enjoy paying the extra for economy plus for the 3 inches more leg room to be exact.

Flight was delayed by 3 hours. The pilot made up 1 hour during the flight, but that made the wait at the airport 5 hours once you factor getting there 2 hours early.

Airline did not explain reasons why flight was delayed two hours. Explanations were badly needed and rarely provided. Problem seemed to clearly be the airline’s fault and not the fault of the weather or airport.

Very uncomfortable seats and seat backs, and I am only 5’9”. Delayed due to crew issues, spent a long time with no ventilation. Teeny overhead bins. Wifi worked well. Arrived safely.

I was delighted that we were able to get on the 4:40 pm flight rather than our original booking at 6:55 pm!! Other than that, the flight was comfortable and landed early😊

Not sure why JAL partnered with American Airlines because their service is no where near similar. Flight attendants were not friendly and didn’t smile. Food was horrible…

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Comfort of seats, ease of boarding. Food selection could be better

Food options were limited which is absolutely embarrassing for a Flight of this size The staff did not come around as much and I am not accustomed to such poor service from American Airlines Drinks I believe were limited to soda and water

Crew were attentive and friendly. Flight was smooth and early! I enjoyed the less crowded plane. Thank you!

We are gluten free, there were not any available complimentary gluten free options.

No meal on a cross country flight? SFO-MiA is pretty much the definition of a coast to coast flight. No meal provided. Sky high wi-fi rates too. Stop nickel and diming your customers.

The staff was unprofessional and didn’t communicate very well. The boarding process was very disheveled, potentially due to a power outage the previous day but there was no contingency plan to properly get passengers boarded the following day. Once boarded the aircraft stayed on the tarmac for over 45 minutes due to high winds. The communication was sporadic but an announcement was finally made an additional 30 minutes later that the flight was cancelled but we couldn’t get off the plane. Prior to deplaning one of the gate agents came on the plane and made an announcement for everyone to pickup their checked bags and take a card to rebook a new reservation because they didn’t have adequate staff. Flights were missed, passengers went to different airports and there was little to no assistance from AA.

You cancelled my flight by email then made it very difficult to get in contact with you. Then put me in a flight with a long layover in Mexico returning to the wrong airport in uk. Mind blowing my stressful. I missed see my grand dad because of you.

Apart from the delay due to unforeseen circumstances. The leg from sjc to dfw was fine. It was the leg from dfw to orf that we encountered issues mainly due to the flight attendant crew not being friendly. We had two small children and we needed some assistance to warm up milk so the baby would sleep. The crew just didn’t get it and made things very difficult. One made a remark that the baby’s dirty diaper smell was a “gift” to the plane in a rude way. Normally I’d brush that off as a funny comment if the rest of the trip the attendants were helpful or understanding of the difficulty we faced. But that wasn’t the case. We were met with rudeness on the second leg. Whereas on the first leg the crew were so nice and helpful.
