Your Trip to St. Louis: The Complete Guide

travel info st louis mo

There’s no longer a need to escape to the coast for a vacation rich in culture and experience. You can find all of that and more—at budget-friendly prices—right in the middle of the country in St. Louis. Thanks to the city’s low cost of living, tech startups and creative types moving in, St. Louis is doing an excellent job keeping up.

With a vibrant food and drink scene and plenty of free activities, the Gateway to the West is the ideal destination for all kinds of travelers: families, couples, urban explorers, and more.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Late spring through early autumn, when the weather is warm and free activities abound.
  • Language: English
  • Currency: US Dollars
  • Getting Around: St. Louis is incredibly spread out, so driving is the most common choice. There is limited public transportation via the MetroLink train system. Uber and Lyft is widely available and residents use both services often.
  • Travel Tip: Pack layers because St. Louis weather is unpredictable and can change on a whim. While the temperature is unlikely to vary too much in summer, other parts of the year can bring unforeseeable weather changes.

Things to Do

St. Louis is full of fun activities year-round. The city is best known for its baseball, barbecue, and breweries, but there’s much more to it than that! You can find live music and outdoor dining just about anywhere on a warm day, and the parks are constantly packed no matter the weather. No matter your interests, you’re sure to find an activity or event that you’ll be talking about for years to come.

  • Take in a game at Busch Stadium. Even if you’re not a big baseball fan, there’s nothing like seeing a game at Busch. Right in the middle of downtown, Busch Stadium is the baseball mecca of the Midwest, and the fans’ enthusiasm for the Cardinals is infectious. It’s a great way to experience an event that’s important to many St. Louisans, with the added bonus of a great view of the St. Louis skyline.
  • Explore Forest Park. Home of the 1904 World's Fair and Summer Olympics, Forest Park is the city’s largest park covering 1,300 acres. Around 13 million people visit Forest Park each year making it the sixth most popular park in the country. The park is home to many important cultural institutions, including the Zoo, Art Museum, History Museum, The Muny Theatre , Science Center, and more.
  • Play around the City Museum. More a playground-cum-art-installation than an actual museum, the City Museum is certainly one of the most unique places you’ll ever see. It’s a collection of found objects, architectural pieces, and larger-than-life art, almost all of which is meant to climb in, on, and around. Definitely wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes; you never know what nooks and crannies you’ll end up discovering. Don’t miss the 10-story slide or the Ferris wheel on the rooftop! Be sure to make a detour to Gateway Arch National Park, it's home to the tallest monument in the United States!

And that’s just a short list of St. Louis’s most famous attractions! Add to your itinerary with the help of our articles on the top tourist attractions , things to do under $10 , and fun things to do with kids (that adults will enjoy too).

What to Eat and Drink

Historically, St. Louis food hasn’t gotten much nationwide praise. Though the city is (in)famous for its thin-crust pizza topped with provel cheese, toasted ravioli, and gooey butter cake, it’s also becoming a verifiable foodie destination. In 2020, eight St. Louis-area restaurants and chefs were James Beard Award Semifinalists.

If you’re in the mood for old-school Italian food, the Hill has dozens of “red sauce” joints and daytime-only sandwich shops. South Grand has an extensive list of international restaurants and you can find Mediterranean, Ethiopian, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Moroccan, and Brazilian cuisine all on one street! For foodie restaurants with inventive menus, venture into the Central West End, Lafayette Square, and Grand Center neighborhoods. Chefs from around the country have discovered the versatility of Ozark-region ingredients and are moving in and bringing new techniques along with them, giving you the opportunity to try new dishes at a relatively affordable price. Additionally, local chefs who have long-known St. Louis’s appetite for excellent food continue to thrive, and several James Beard winners and nominees own some of the best restaurants in town.

One such local chef, Gerard Craft, who was awarded the James Beard award for Best Chef in the Midwest, has made his name in the city thanks to his several excellent restaurants. You could do a full food tour on Craft’s restaurants alone by visiting Clayton (Sardella and Pastaria), the Central West End (Brasserie and Taste), and downtown (Cinder House). Another chef with a James Beard nod, Kevin Nashan, runs Benton Park’s Sidney Street Cafe and Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co., which flies their fresh seafood in daily.

St. Louis is a decidedly pro-drinking city, even during Prohibition when there was a flood of speakeasies and moonshiners. With lax liquor laws and a microbrewery on seemingly every street, there’s never a shortage of beer no matter where you are. St. Louis is best known for its largest brewery, Anheuser-Busch , which you can tour almost every day for free. You’ll learn about the history of brewing in America (and specifically in St. Louis) and will see the brewing process up-close! If you’re not an AB fan, never fear: There are plenty of microbreweries around, each with their own distinct identity. Try local brews from Civil Life, Urban Chestnut, 4 Hands, Schlafly, and more to get a real taste of what St. Louisans like in their beer. If beer isn’t up your alley, St. Louis also has excellent spots for award-winning handcrafted cocktails or for working your way through carefully curated wine lists.

Explore our articles on the most famous restaurants in St. Louis and a beer-lovers’ guide for specific recommendations!

Where to Stay

St. Louis is made up of fairly distinct neighborhoods that all have their own personality. Because the city is heavily suburban, there aren’t as many hotels as you’d expect to find in a larger city. That’s why it’s a good idea to look into Airbnb. Not only can you find beautiful apartments or even whole houses at a relatively low price, you’ll be able to experience what life is really like as a St. Louis resident. Most homes are built with traditional red brick on tree-lined streets. The Shaw, Tower Grove South, and Central West End neighborhoods are the most popular; they’re centrally located, historic, safe, and incredibly beautiful.

If you’re looking for a room service experience instead, why not skip the more recognizable chains and try one of St. Louis’s new boutique hotels? Look into Hotel St. Louis in downtown St. Louis, the Chase Park Plaza in the Central West End, the Moonrise Hotel in the Loop, or Hotel Ignacio in Grand Center. All of these hotels will give you the luxury experience you’re craving at a price you can stomach!

For more hotel recommendations, check out this list of the best hotels in St. Louis.

Getting There

St. Louis is centrally located in the middle of the country and it is an easy drive from pretty much anywhere in the Midwest. Three interstate highways — Interstate 70, Interstate 64 (often referred to as Highway 40 in St. Louis), and Interstate 44 — run right through it, making it a few hours’ drive from many major cities.

You can also fly into St. Louis’s airport , Lambert International (which is not actually an international airport anymore!) which served 15.6 million passengers in 2018. Many flights into St. Louis are very affordable. The airport is less than half an hour from the city itself, so you should either rent a car, call an Uber or Lyft, or take the MetroLink to your destination.

St. Louis is a multicultural city that has historically been very welcoming to immigrants. There is a large Bosnian population in St. Louis, centered in Little Bosnia in the city’s Bevo Mill neighborhood. In fact, it’s the largest Bosnian population outside of Bosnia. There are also many Vietnamese and Thai restaurants, thanks to its many east Asian immigrants. If you are not an American citizen, you will feel at home in the city’s many international restaurants and neighborhoods.

However, the city has historically had a racial segregation problem, which was made worse by a large amount of white flight several decades ago. While the city and its citizens are working to repair these divides, it is important to be cognizant of these issues as you explore new neighborhoods.

For instance, the Old North neighborhood north of downtown has some excellent restaurants and boutiques, but it’s not recommended for many tourists to venture there at night. Additionally, there is a distinct socioeconomic divide that runs along Delmar Boulevard, particularly near the Central West End, and it’s not recommended for casual tourists to go north of Delmar without being aware of their surroundings.

Money-Saving Tips

If you’re vacationing on a budget, you’ll be delighted to hear that some of St. Louis’s most beloved cultural institutions are free every single day.

  • The St. Louis Zoo is completely free to all visitors.
  • The St. Louis Art Museum is one of the best in the world and is completely free, with the exception of some rotating exhibitions.
  • The St. Louis Science Center is also free and is an excellent place for children (of all ages!) to learn about science and technology.
  • There are a massive amount of free activities and festivals in St. Louis, particularly in the warmer months . While many of these festivals center around food and drink, usually you don’t need a ticket to enter.
  • Find even more wallet-friendly things to do with these lists on free things in St. Louis and free things to do with kids .

Settled on the western bank of the mighty Mississippi River, St. Louis has long been a destination for curious travelers.

The Native American Mississippian culture flourished in this area until the 15th century, constructing dozens of elaborate earthwork mounds and a city that rivaled the population of London. Founded by French fur traders in 1764, St. Louis soon passed into Spanish hands as war spoils before returning to France again and then being signed over to the United States. St. Louis was the starting point of the 1804 Lewis and Clark expedition to figure out exactly what had been bought as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

Even though the city has impressive historic credentials, St. Louis is hardly stuck in the past. Just as the lively river courses past the city, St. Louis is always on the move, while maintaining a classic no-fuss Midwestern personality.

Here are the must-include things to do on your trip to St. Louis .

Downtown St Louis, MO with the Old Courthouse and the Gateway Arch at sunrise

Ride to the top of the Gateway Arch

A symbol of St. Louis and white western migration, the 630ft-high Gateway Arch , more than double the height of the Statue of Liberty, promotes the city’s historic role as the “Gateway to the West.” Small trams that feel like 1960s space capsules straight out of The Jetsons take just four minutes to trundle to the top of the arch, releasing passengers into a narrow viewing area with windows that provide unbeatable views over the city. Back at ground level, the free-to-visit Museum at the Gateway Arch has interactive exhibits that detail the history of St. Louis and the architectural and engineering feats required for the arch’s construction.

Fly down a 10-story slide at City Museum

Don’t you dare let the dull name put you off: City Museum might be the most fun you’ll have in St. Louis. Part playground, part architectural salvage, part art installation, this fun house is a wild ride – literally. Seven- and 10-story slides cascade down through the industrial building, a century-old former warehouse for the International Shoe Company, and relics from demolished buildings are portals to other floors (and maybe even other worlds). Don’t miss the school bus and Ferris wheel perched on the rooftop – the extra excitement is worth the additional fee.

Find your space in Forest Park

Clocking in at 1371 acres – almost 45% larger than Central Park in New York City – Forest Park is the green heart of St. Louis. The park has plenty to keep sporty types occupied, from tennis courts and a golf course to a boathouse and wintertime ice rink, but history buffs and culture vultures will love it too. The park was the venue for the 1904 World’s Fair and Summer Olympics, and today it has an impressive host of top-notch and surprisingly free-to-visit museums, including the Missouri History Museum and the St. Louis Art Museum plus the St. Louis Zoo , that are worth an afternoon at an absolute minimum.

Tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery…

Say what you will about Budweiser, but the lager remains one of the best-selling beers in the US. The Anheuser-Busch Brewery , a huge red-brick brewery complex, was opened by German immigrants in the 1850s, and the public has been allowed to gawk at the ornate interiors and production line for more than 130 years. Visits are free, as are the samples at the tour’s end.

...but drink up St. Louis’ excellent craft beer scene

While St. Louis might be better known for its mega beer brands, the city’s craft brewery scene is one of the finest in the Midwest. The juicy Rockmelon Cantaloupe IPA from 4 Hands Brewing Co – an easy e-scooter ride down the street from Anheuser-Busch – won our hearts immediately, as did the laid-back atmosphere at 2nd Shift Brewing and the out-of-this-world flavors at Earthbound Beer (Chicken and Waffles Blonde! Thai Basil IPA!). If you have wheels, head to the western suburb of Maplewood for Side Project Brewing , which in 2019 was named the second best brewer in the entire world by RateBeer . Their experimental barrel-aged beers include spontaneously fermented wild ales and fruity saisons.

Facade of St Louis Union station at dusk

Admire the architecture of Union Station

You might not be able to catch a train at Union Station anymore (though you still can from the slightly depressing Gateway Transportation Center about half a mile away), this grand structure, opened in 1894, is worth a visit. The Grand Hall, now a hotel bar, is a perfect vantage point for admiring the train station’s Roman Revival architecture, including original terrazzo flooring, gold-leaf detailing and a Tiffany glass window in which women in brightly colored dresses depict the cities of San Francisco and New York, with St. Louis in the middle linking them together. The expansive 65-foot barrel-vaulted ceiling is best appreciated during an evening 3D light show, where soaring birds, dancing flowers and exploding fireworks are projected every hour from 5pm to 10pm.

Sample St. Louis’s favorite foods

St. Louis’s foodie specialties reflect the diversity of the immigrants and newcomers who have called this city home over the centuries. The Hill is a long-standing Italian-American neighborhood with a delectable selection of delis and restaurants, and it’s the best place to try toasted ravioli, breaded and deep-fried pockets of meat. Sample them at the source at Charlie Gitto's , where they were “invented” in 1947 when a chef accidentally dropped a ravioli in hot oil instead of water.

For even more of a carb overload, try St. Louis–style pizza: the super thin-crust is cut into squares and topped with your standard pick of meats and vegetables and then covered in buttery-textured Provel, a custom combination of cheddar, Swiss and provolone cheeses that you won’t find far outside the city’s boundaries. Local chain Imo’s has been serving Provel pizzas since the 1960s, and with more than 70 outlets across the St. Louis metro area, it clearly has a strong local following.

Sweet tooths should save room for a "concrete" from Ted Drewes , where cups of thick frozen custard are mixed with chocolate, fruit, nuts, hot fudge and caramel sauce. The location on Chippewa Street, opened in 1941, served generations of travelers along this historic branch of Route 66.

Mosaics in the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis

Marvel at the mosaics at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis

With two lofty spires, a grand dome and a huge rosette window, the imposing Romanesque-style Cathedral Basilica wouldn’t look out of place in Europe. Though construction was completed on the cathedral in 1914, work on the famous mosaics continued until 1988. Nearly 42 million glass mosaic pieces in 7000 colors cover the walls and ceilings throughout this huge building, and it’s the largest collection of mosaic art in the western hemisphere. The mosaic museum on the cathedral’s lower level goes into detail about their design and installation, and guided tours are offered on weekdays.

Cheer on St. Louis’s sports teams

The love of sports of all sorts runs deep in St. Louis, which has been named one of the best sports cities in the country . Catch a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game at Busch Stadium – the team has won the World Series 11 times, second only to the New York Yankees. The St. Louis Blues hockey team won the Stanley Cup in 2019 and makes frequent appearances in the Stanley Cup playoffs. After years of proposals, the city will soon get its first Major League Soccer team, St. Louis City SC, which is expected to have its first season in 2023 in a brand new purpose-built stadium. St. Louis also has a handful of minor league teams and college teams, so sports fans are never long without a game.

Listen to live jazz at Venice Cafe

Covered in glittering mirrors, colorful mosaics and quirky bric-a-brac – think repurposed ashtrays, boat hulls and taxidermy – Venice Cafe is where art and music meet up for a great night out. Many legendary names in music, including Scott Joplin, Chuck Berry and Miles Davis, got their start in St. Louis, and this bar doesn’t miss a beat, with live blues, rock and jazz almost every night of the week. The cash-only bar serves cocktails, beer and wine, and there’s also a menu of Caribbean dishes.

Get to know the region’s earlier residents at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

One of the most intriguing archaeological sites in the Midwest, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site was once a sprawling Native American city from 800 to 1400 AD with its population of tens of thousands on par with London, England, at the time. Today the quiet, grass-covered remains of this sophisticated prehistoric civilization cover 2200 acres, and the Unesco World Heritage-listed site preserves 70 of the original 120 earthen mounds, which were used as building foundations and for burials.

A reconstructed astronomical observatory made of wooden posts arranged in a circle, nicknamed Woodhenge, aligned with the movements of the sun to indicate the changing seasons throughout the year. Climb the stairs to the top of Monks Mound, the largest indigenous earthwork in the Americas, which is nearly 100 feet tall. From here, on a clear day, you can see the Gateway Arch and St. Louis’s skyline.

You’ll need a car or ride-hailing app such as Uber or Lyft to get to Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. The site is about a 20-minute drive east of downtown St. Louis, on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River.

Why Go To St. Louis

With a slice of Midwestern Americana and a hint of cosmopolitan flair, St. Louis' charms are best viewed in the reddened stands of Busch Stadium , in the nostalgia of the iconic Judy Garland film "Meet Me in St. Louis," or at the bottom of a pint of Budweiser. And yes, there's the  Gateway Arch  – that gleaming curve of stainless steel looking westward. But beyond its star attractions, you'll find a vibrant city that has plenty to offer for beer, food, sports and music enthusiasts.

To start, it's the birthplace of iced tea and ice cream cones, both mainstays for a summer visit. What's more, it’s home to the National Blues Museum. And with 79 distinct neighborhoods to tour, including tranquil  Forest Park  and historic Soulard, there's plenty to see, eat and do in this Midwestern metropolis. Plus, sightseeing here won't put a major dent in your wallet: St. Louis boasts tons free attractions, from the zoo to the art museum to the grounds of the Gateway Arch. So, take a cue from Lewis and Clark, who "discovered" the area in the early 19th century, and start your exploration of the West – and St. Louis – here.

Best months to visit.

The best times to visit St. Louis are in April and May and September through October. St. Louis experiences hot and sticky summers and long, cold winters. The spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and set the stage for a full event calendar.

Weather in St. Louis

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

It's multicultural  Although the Gateway to the West offers its fair share of classic Americana (think: Cardinals baseball and barbecue), St. Louis also boasts a sizable immigrant population. In fact, this Midwestern city is home to the world's largest Bosnian population outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It's hopping For a night out, head to The Loop in the West End. This area features a vibrant set of watering holes, plus dance lounges and several live music venues.

It's a barbecue town St. Louis' version of barbecue is tangy and sweet. To sample some of the city's finest barbecue, visit traveler-approved barbecue joints like Bogart's Smokehouse in Soulard and  Pappy's Smokehouse in Midtown.

How to Save Money in St. Louis

Be mindful of the Cardinals' home schedule Although hotel rates stay fairly consistent throughout the year, prices can rise when the Cardinals play at home. To avoid these higher prices, plan your visit in the offseason or when the Cardinals are away.

Take advantage of the city's free attractions  One of the draws of this Missouri city is its abundance of free activities. Save some money by sticking to St. Louis' free attractions , such as the Saint Louis Zoo  and the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis .

Use public transportation  If you're hoping to avoid the added expense of renting a car or paying for parking, consider using Metro, the city's light rail and bus system. One-day Adventure passes, which cover unlimited rides on all buses and light rail, cost $5.

Culture & Customs

Like Chicago and New York City , St. Louis is home to a plethora of immigrant communities. In addition to the world's largest Bosnian population outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the city boasts large German, Indian, Libyan and Mexican enclaves. Neighborhoods like The Hill are prime spots to try authentic cuisines from all around the world. Other neighborhoods, such as The Ville, are essential for understanding St Louis history. The Ville was the home of many prominent Black figures during the 1920s, including Annie Malone, one of the country’s first Black millionaires. It's also where Sumner High School still stands. The high school was the first school west of the Mississippi to provide secondary education for Black students. If you'd like to learn more about Black history in St. Louis, pay a visit to the Missouri History Museum , which features exhibits on the civil rights movement, as well as seasonal guided walks through The Ville.

Music is also an integral part of St. Louis. The birthplace of ragtime – a precursor to jazz music that was popular in the late 19th century – St. Louis offers multiple kinds of music (think: rock, jazz, reggae and swing) at its performance venues. Traveler's favorites include Broadway Oyster Bar , The Ready Room and Off Broadway . For a complete list of clubs, check out Explore St. Louis' website . And to learn more about blues music specifically, pay a visit to the National Blues Museum.

Another vital aspect of this Midwestern city is its baseball culture. The hometown team, the St. Louis Cardinals, regularly play at downtown's Busch Stadium . Some seats even feature views of the Gateway Arch .

What to Eat

From St. Louis-style barbecue to classic pub grub to authentic Bosnian and Italian fare, odds are you'll find plenty to sink your teeth into in this vibrant multicultural city. Many of the city's neighborhoods are home to a particular ethnic background and style of cuisine, so if you know what kind of food you're after, consult Explore St. Louis' Neighborhoods page  before venturing out for grub. Or if you'd rather heed the advice of past diners, try eating at one of the following traveler-approved eateries.

Should you crave a classic deli sandwich, previous visitors suggest checking out  Blues City Deli  in Benton Park or Adriana's on the Hill in – you guessed it – The Hill district. For American comfort food like burgers, wings and nachos, dine at Hendel's Restaurant & Market , Gourmet Soul or Stacked STL . And if you're looking for a quintessential rack of St. Louis-style ribs (which are slathered in sweet barbecue sauce before cooking on a grill), head to local barbecue hot spots, such as  Bogart's Smokehouse , Pappy's Smokehouse or Sugarfire Smoke House .

For fine dining, consider making reservations at Bait (for seafood), Olive + Oak (for elevated American fare), Brasserie by Niche (for a French menu), Vicia (perfect for vegetarians) or Juniper (for Southern eats).

No visit to St. Louis would be complete without sampling the city's twist on authentic Italian and Bosnian cuisines. The Hill's  Charlie Gitto's and Zia's on the Hill are two places known for traditional Italian fare and toasted ravioli, a local Italian-inspired dish that features filled pasta covered in breadcrumbs and pan-fried. If you'd rather try Bosnian cuisine, head 5 miles outside the city center to Grbic Restaurant & Events , a family-owned and operated restaurant that serves classic European dishes like goulash and Serbian stuffed cabbage, among other items. For authentic Mexican fare, locals suggest El Toluco Taqueria & Grocery (order a torta), and Mai Lee for Vietnamese and Chinese classics like pho, rice porridge, noodle bowls and more.

St. Louis is relatively safe to visit, but like other metropolitan areas, it's best to exercise caution while visiting, especially in areas north of Delmar Boulevard and across the Mississippi River in Illinois’ East St. Louis. Explore St. Louis recommends several tips for staying safe during your trip, including hiding your valuables in parked cars hidden and walking with others at night. For more safety suggestions, consult Explore St. Louis' website .

Getting Around St. Louis

The best way to get around St. Louis is by car or MetroLink. Metro's efficient light rail system offers stops throughout the city, though locales removed from the main tourist areas, such as Grant's Farm , are generally harder to reach (if at all). Having your own set of wheels – which you can rent from St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) – will ensure you can get to all of St. Louis' must-visit sights, but this convenience comes at a cost: You'll have to pay between $3 and $25 to park in the downtown area on top of daily car rental fees. Metro's network also includes MetroBus routes, but its longer travel times make them less convenient. Hailing a taxi or renting a bike are other options, but cabs are pricey and biking is not recommended during the cooler months.

Head to the Illinois side of the Mississippi River for breathtaking skyline and Gateway Arch vistas.

Gateway Arch

In the center of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park is the Gateway Arch , a symbol of the city's role as the "Gateway to the West." This parabolic arch of stainless steel, 625 feet high, was erected from 1959 to 1965 to the design of Eero Saarinen, based on an unexecuted project by Adalberto Libera for the entrance to the Esposizione Universale di Roma of 1942. It is the tallest monument in the United States .

Eight elevators run up to the observation platform on the highest point of the arch. You can also view the arch from the water on one of the many riverboat cruises, or by air in a helicopter tour. Tickets for the Gateway Arch are sold at the Gateway Arch Ticketing and Visitor Center in the Old Courthouse, which is located eight blocks (a 10- to 15-minute walk) from the arch. Advance purchase of tickets for the observation platform is recommended.

Old Courthouse

On the right-hand side of Market Street is a massive domed building, the Old Courthouse , which is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park. It was built in the mid-1800s and has been the scene of several important trials, including the suit by Dred Scott for freedom from slavery and Suffragist Virginia Louisa Minor for the right to vote.

The courthouse now showcases exhibits from the Museum of Westward Expansion. The Gateway Arch Ticketing and Visitor Center is also located in the Old Courthouse.

The Old Courthouse is currently closed and in the midst of a major 380-million-dollar renovation that will include new galleries, an elevator, and critical behind-the-scenes infrastructure updates.

Address: 11 N. 4th Street, St. Louis, Missouri

Missouri Botanical Garden

The beautiful Missouri Botanical Garden is also known as the Shaw Garden, after the businessman and botanist Henry Shaw (1800-89) who laid it out in 1859. In the southeast part of the gardens are the richly appointed Tower Grove House, Henry Shaw's "garden house".

The gardens themselves comprise a lovely rose garden and the rather unusual Climatron, built in 1960, and today houses 2,800 tropical plants, a Japanese Garden, an "aqua-tunnel" under a water-lily pool, and a herbarium.

The Doris I. Schnuck Children's Garden is designed with youngsters in mind, with an aim towards educating and inspiring children in the field of horticulture. Within the garden are several tourist attractions, including a prairie village and treehouse. Special exhibits include the "Cave Experience," which is a man-made cave, and a wetlands area that includes a steamboat.

Admission is free to residents of St. Louis City and County on specific days and times.

Address: 4344 Shaw Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri

Forest Park Attractions

Forest Park sits on the site of the 1904 World Fair, and some of the structures here still date from that time period. The Jefferson Memorial sits on the north side of the park and houses the Missouri History Museum, which includes historical exhibits about the state, St. Louis, and Charles Lindbergh.

In the center of the park, the City Art Museum has collections of art from prehistoric through contemporary works, and nearby is the Zoo .

To the east, near the Highlands Golf and Tennis Center , the Jewel Box contains a conservatory with hundreds of varieties of flowers. Beyond this, on the outside corner of the park, the St. Louis Science Center has plenty of attractions and things to do, including a planetarium, IMAX theater, and interactive exhibits for all ages.

Tigers at the Saint Louis Zoo

The Saint Louis Zoo is located in Forest Park. You'll find it across the lawn, and an easy stroll from the City Art Museum. The zoo has more than 12,000 animals across 500 species. Residents include Asian elephants, hippos, gorillas, tree kangaroos, jaguars, and sea lions.

The zoo is a free attraction in St. Louis, making it available to everyone. Although you still have to pay a modest fee for parking, this is the only cost you'll have to bear, and it's a small price to pay for what the zoo has to offer.

Innovative pavilions house animals from around the world, and two of the best are the polar bear and hippopotamus pools. Here, you can be mere inches from these huge animals on the other side of thick glass.

The Sea Lion show is a favorite. You'll see high dives, Frisbee tosses, flipper walks, and other entertaining and educational antics. A small fee is charged for the show. Apart from the animals, fun rides for the kids are available, including a carousel, the miniature Zooline Railroad, and a 4D theater.

Magic House, St. Louis Children's Museum

Located in a three-story Victorian home, the Magic House children's museum provides hands-on exhibits about science, communications, and computers. Exhibits are divided into themed areas and encourage engagement from children. Each area is designed to enhance curiosity and experimentation.

There is a designated play area for babies and toddlers, as well as the Calming Corner, a room filled with activities and toys that are soothing, which is a haven for children who need a break from sensory overload. The museum café specializes in healthy fresh-food options; many of the ingredients are grown on-site.

City Museum

The City Museum , housed in a former shoe factory, is a bizarre and delightfully entertaining facility that both children and adults will appreciate. Exhibits include a giant aquarium, an architectural museum, art activities, and a participatory circus, among many others.

In addition to all that, the museum has caves, slides, a treehouse, tunnels, and even the world's largest pencil.

The museum's major structures and installations were made entirely of materials found within the St. Louis municipal area. The building itself is an impressive piece of architecture, and its design is the brainchild of sculptor and artist Bob Cassilly.

Address: 701 North 15th Street, Saint Louis, Missouri

Market Street

Across the I-70, beside the Gateway Arch, is the start of Market Street. The city's main street, it is lined by important buildings and halfway along opens out into St. Louis Memorial Plaza. On the left-hand side is the gigantic rotunda of the Busch Stadium , which has seating for 50,000 spectators.

The stadium is home to the St. Louis Cardinals, the city's baseball team, whose history is documented in the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame. The neighboring National Bowling Hall of Fame does the same for bowling.

Farther along Market Street, on the left, is City Hall, which was modeled on the Hotel de Ville in Paris. There are some interesting buildings in the streets running north from Market Street. On 14th Street is the Soldiers Memorial Building, commemorating all fallen American soldiers. At the corner of 14th Street and Market Street is the Kiel Auditorium.

Old Cathedral (Basilica of St. Louis, King)

Southwest of the Gateway Arch is the Old Cathedral , the Catholic Basilica of St. Louis of France. Built from 1831 to 1834 on the site of the first church of St. Louis (1770), it survived the 1849 fire unscathed. On the west side of the cathedral is the Old Cathedral Museum, covering the history of the city.

The interior of the church is decorated with complex mosaics, and ongoing restoration projects have returned the dome and bell towers to their original glory. Free self-guided tours are available — the brochure is on a pedestal in the main entranceway. For a deeper dive into the church, guided tours take place every Sunday after noon mass.

There are several interesting neighborhoods in St. Louis, but first-time visitors who plan to sightsee would be best off finding accommodation right downtown. This is where the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park and the Gateway Arch are located, along with many other important attractions. Below are some highly rated hotels in convenient locations:

Luxury Hotels :

  • Located downtown in the entertainment district, near the Gateway Arch, is the posh Four Seasons Hotel , with a beautiful outdoor pool and patio area overlooking the Mississippi River and the Arch.
  • One of the most unique hotels in St. Louis is the St. Louis Union Station, Curio Collection by Hilton , set in the grand old Union Station building dating from 1894. The Grand Hall lobby of this hotel is exquisite.
  • Also downtown is the boutique Magnolia Hotel, a Tribute Portfolio , with a contemporary feel. It offers regular rooms, suites, and an extended-stay program.

Mid-Range Hotels :

  • Housed in three beautifully renovated historic buildings and within easy walking distance of the Gateway Arch is the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch .
  • Attached to the Convention Center and near many of the downtown attractions is the Courtyard St. Louis Downtown/Convention Center .
  • Nearby, but closer to the river and the Gateway Arch, is the Embassy Suites by Hilton St. Louis . This LEED-certified all-suite hotel is perfect for families, with two-room suites and a pool.

Budget Hotels :

  • Since the city center lacks budget hotels, the best option is to find a hotel outside the city center, although this requires a little driving. The Red Roof Inn Plus St Louis-Forest Park/Hampton Avenue is a good value option about a 10-minute drive from downtown.
  • Even closer is the Hotel Avyan , with basic but comfortable rooms.

St. Louis sits at the eastern edge of Missouri, while at the far western border is Kansas City , known for its barbecue and jazz music. Outside its two big cities, Missouri has several attractions worth visiting, including Silver Dollar City in Branson , Wilson's Creek National Battlefield in Republic, and the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal.

North of St. Louis is Springfield , the capital of Illinois , and beyond it is Chicago . About the same distance from St. Louis as Kansas City are Indianapolis in Indiana and Louisville in Kentucky , both to the east, and the Tennessee cities of Nashville and Memphis are to the south.

St. Louis

St. Louis is known as the Gateway to the West. This was certainly the case for Lewis and Clark, who stopped here for provisions during their famous expedition. In the years that followed, the city became a manufacturing center for wagons, guns, blankets, saddles, and everything pioneers would need on their journeys west.

St. Louis was originally settled by New Orleans fur trader Pierre Laclède in 1764 at the junction of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. This location proved ideal, and St. Louis quickly surpassed its downstream neighbor, Ste. Genevieve, in growth—by 1860, the city had more than 160,000 residents.

Because of its size and location, St. Louis became a center for government and finance, and the 1904 World's Fair brought increasing growth and diversification to the local marketplace. The Roman Catholic Church dominated the religious life of early St. Louis, and it remains a powerful voice in the local religious, social, and political debates to this day. The city's educational institutions, including Washington University and St. Louis University, are global leaders in scientific and social research. Forest Park's Muny Opera is the largest open-air theater in the nation, and the St. Louis Art Museum is known throughout the world.

But St. Louis is indisputably a baseball town, and a fanatic love of the sport—and specifically the Cardinals—is a way of life for many here. Fans also support the NFL's Rams and the NHL's Blues, but rooting for the redbirds trumps everything.

The Perfect One Day in St. Louis Travel Itinerary

travel info st louis mo

I can only assume that if you’re on this page that you must be planning a visit to St. Louis, and let me tell you… You are in for a treat! St. Louis is a wonderful city! The food is delicious, the activities are exciting and unique and fun for the whole family, and the city is the perfect size… not so big that it’s difficult to get around, but not so small that you’ll struggle to find something to do. We had the privilege of visiting St. Louis back in May of 2021 and had a blast! If you’re a time-crunched traveler like us, don’t let that steer you away from this city. We only had 24 hours to explore and felt like we were able to get a good feel for St. Louis. We put together this itinerary that is perfect for anyone trying to maximize every second that they have in The Gateway to the West!

*Also, check out our “Missouri: 24 Hours in St. Louis” travel vlog for a closer look at our time in St. Louis*

Now, let's get started...

8:00am: Coffee/Breakfast

Park Avenue Coffee (1919 Park Ave)

Other Options:

Sump Coffee (3700 S Jefferson Ave)

Blueprint Coffee (6225 Delmar Blvd)

Anytime we’re in a new city, we love to find a great local coffee shop to get our day started right… with caffeine… and sugar! For this trip, we visited Park Avenue Coffee and definitely recommend it! Their Brown Sugar Lavender Latte was SO good and if you’ve never had Gooey Butter Cake, this is the perfect opportunity to try this St. Louis classic! If you like butter and sugar, you won’t be disappointed. It’s pretty rich though, so you might want to share!

9:15am: Explore Gateway Arch National Park & Museum (11 N 4th St #1810 )

After getting a taste of St. Louis history, now it’s time to get a closeup look at it! The Gateway Arch is undoubtedly one of the most iconic US landmarks and since getting a $380 million overhaul back in 2018 (when it became the 60th US National Park), it’s a site worth seeing! If you’re ok with small spaces and heights, the tram ride to the top is a must, but even if that’s not your thing, the museum below the arch is totally worth a visit. By the time you leave, you’ll feel like a St. Louis historian!

*Pro-Tip: Book your tram tickets in advance as they sell out most days.

travel info st louis mo

12:00pm: St. Louis Riverfront Cruise (50 S Leonor K Sullivan Blvd)

Once you’ve finished up at the Arch you’ll head over to the mighty Mississippi to catch a river boat cruise! This 1 hour cruise is a great way to get a different vantage point of the city. Plus, the captain of the boat narrates the entire ride with fun facts and history. There’s a full snack bar onboard as well as restrooms, so the only thing you have to worry about is sitting back, relaxing, and enjoying the ride!

*Pro-Tip: If you do plan to do the tram ride and riverfront cruise, you can book them as a combo deal online and save yourself some money.

travel info st louis mo

1:30pm: Lunch

Pappy's Smokehouse (3106 Olive St)

Bogart's Smokehouse (1627 S 9th St)

Blues City Deli (2438 McNair Ave)

After a morning spent soaking in the history of St. Louis, it’s time for lunch! Pappy’s Smokehouse is the home of the Best Ribs in America according to Food Network! And while we haven’t tried all of the ribs in America, we can attest to the fact that these are oh so finger licking good! Be prepared though… The lines here can be a little long, but the food is worth the wait!

travel info st louis mo

3:00pm: City Museum (750 N 16th St)

This stop will put all of those calories from lunch to use! Don’t let the name fool you, City Museum is more art installation than museum, and more playground than art installation. Housed in the former International Shoe building, City Museum consists largely of repurposed architectural and industrial objects that have been transformed into functional art. Around every corner is another cave, slide, or ladder leading to the next unexpected adventure! We spent way too long at City Museum and can only imagine how fun it would be with kids! It’s a must-visit place in St. Louis in our opinion.

*Pro-Tip: Wear active clothes, close-toed shoes, and bring knee pads and a flashlight/headlamp. Also, leave any bulky items in the car. You don’t want anything putting a damper on the fun!

travel info st louis mo

5:30pm: Happy Hour

360 (1 South Broadway)

Form Skybar (705 Olive St)

Cinder House Bar and Sky Terrace (999 North 2nd St)

If you have time and want to get a birds-eye view of the city (other than from the arch), head to 360 (located atop The Hilton) for amazing happy hour views of the Gateway arch and the St. Louis Cardinals’ Busch Stadium!

7:00pm: Dinner

Imo’s Pizza (multiple locations)

Stacked STL (7637 Ivory Ave)

Anthonino's Taverna (2225 Macklind Ave)

Once you’ve gotten all of the 360 views your heart can handle, it’s time to come back down to ground level for another St. Louis Classic… Imo’s Pizza! Claiming to be the Original St. Louis-Style Pizza, Imo’s is a MUST when in St. Louis. If you aren’t familiar with St. Louis-Style Pizza, let me give you a quick introduction… St. Louis-Style Pizza is made on a cracker-thin crust, edge-to-edge toppings, homemade sauce, and the most distinct ingredient... Provel cheese! And if you’re from anywhere outside of the St. Louis area, you’re probably wondering “What is Provel cheese?”. To answer that question, Provel cheese is a mixture of white cheddar, Swiss, and provolone, although it really doesn’t taste like any of them! St. Louis Style Pizza tends to get mixed reviews, but we totally recommend giving it a try. We really enjoyed it! Also... Get the toasted ravioli!

travel info st louis mo

8:30pm: Dessert at Andy's Frozen Custard

If you happen to go to the Imo’s location in Kirkwood like we did, then just down the street is this custard place serving up delicious “Concretes” which are essentially custard with toppings mixed in. I know it’s a chain/franchise with over 85 locations, but it started just a few hours west of St. Louis in Osage Beach, Missouri, so we’re counting it as “local”!

Ferry tales: Where the road meets the river in St. Louis

  • Jim Winnerman Special to the Post-Dispatch
  • May 30, 2024
  • 5 min to read
  • Robert Cohen

Ride aboard the Golden Eagle Ferry as it connects Kampville, Mo. in St. Charles County to Winneberger, Ill. in Calhoun County, across the Mississippi River on Memorial Day, May 28, 2024.

Early in the history of America it was not uncommon for an enterprising individual to erect a house on a riverbank and make a living providing a ferry service moving people and goods to the opposite shore. Historical records from 1797 indicate that at St. Louis, passengers on the east bank of the Mississippi would embark from Capt. James S. Piggott’s Ferry House to sit in hollowed-out tree trunks as they were paddled and poled across the river.

Later, ferries used horses harnessed onto a circular treadmill on the boat. As the horses walked in circles they powered a paddlewheel propelling the ferry across the water. Eventually steam and gasoline engines replaced the horses, and the size of the ferries increased.

Richard Bruner of Decatur, Ill., waits to board the Golden Eagle Ferry on the St. Charles County side of the Mississippi River on May 21, 2024. Bruner, joined by Scott Gilman, were headed home after riding to Wentzville to meet a group of Memorial Day riders headed to Washington, D.C.

Another early means of power was to use a cable firmly strung from bank to bank and attached to the ferry. The cable kept the boat on course, and the current of the river delivered the power.

Piggott’s ferry eventually ended up in the ownership of Samuel Wiggins, whose name would be tied to river crossings at St. Louis for the next century.

It was not until 1874 and the opening of Eads Bridge, the first pedestrian span across the Mississippi, that St. Louis area ferries began a slow decline and bridge-building proliferated.

Today, a ride on a river ferry is a distant memory almost anywhere in the United States.

And yet, 150 years since the Eads Bridge opened, use of ferries in this area is somewhat of an anomaly. It may be a surprise to learn there are still several operating within the metropolitan area. These modern-day relics cross the Mississippi and Illinois rivers in areas still underserved by a bridge. They continue to stitch together gaps in the transportation network, and remain as a vital link for farmers and commuters.

Golden Eagle Ferry pilot John Ohlendorf waves to familiar faces as he and deckhand Ann Ray load morning commuters in Calhoun County for a trip across the Mississippi River to St. Charles County on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

Local ferries can be found crossing the Mississippi and Illinois rivers at Winfield, St. Charles and Ste. Genevieve in Missouri, and Grafton, Kampsville and Brussels in Illinois.

Farther from St. Louis a ferry connects Dorena, Missouri, to Hickman, Kentucky.

Even with the remaining ferries being important to local economies, tourists interested in a ride on a transportation antiquity are now an important contributor to keeping the ferries running. Ferryboat Capt. Mark Mayo who pilots the Dorena-to-Hickman ferry says tourists board almost every crossing. “It is not unusual for people to drive 100 miles out of their way on a vacation to cross the Mississippi River on our ferry,” Mayo says. “This is a bucket-list experience for people who enjoy the nostalgia of crossing a river ‘the old-fashioned way.’ For a few moments it is a voyage back in time.”

David Avis, president of the Warren County Historical Society in Warrenton fondly recalls being onboard many area ferries. “I always enjoyed crossings when I was a kid traveling with the family,” he remembers. “Especially the Gasconade Osage Ferry in Fredericksburg, Missouri. It is closed now, but I believe it was one of two inland ferries in Missouri. It crossed the Gasconade River west of Hermann. The other was Akers Ferry in south-central Missouri across the Current River.

“It is interesting as you look around the St. Louis and St. Charles County areas, you see roads and streets with ‘ferry’ in the name referring to where they connected to ferries crossing the local rivers,” Avis says, referring to Lemay Ferry Road, Tesson Ferry Road and Dougherty Ferry Road.

David Pohlman, fire chief at the Rivers Pointe Fire Protection District, hands his ticket to deckhand Ann Ray as he rides aboard the Golden Eagle Ferry to St. Charles County on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Commuters ride the ferry for $17 round trip.

As passengers load onto the Golden Eagle Ferry, pilots punch their arrival, separated into five categories on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

Sometime the memory of a historic ferry route is formally recognized. In Arrow Rock, Missouri, a ferry played a significant role in shepherding traffic across the Missouri River, onto the Santa Fe Trail and out into the western frontier. Today a plaque recognizes the importance of the site, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

There is a lot of old-time charm to riding a ferry. Instead of passing over a river in a minute or so while riding in a car. On board a ferry you can feel and see the river current, and enjoy the scenery, birds and other wildlife on shore.

Furthermore, it is almost impolite to sit in your car during a crossing. It is the perfect chance to talk to people making the trip with you and find out where they are going. There is a good chance someone will be from another country exploring the backroads of America, or an adventurous tourist from another state.

“I always see people get on board as strangers, and get off as friends,” Mayo says.

Memorial Day visitors from O’Fallon, Mo., who declined to be identified, ride aboard the Golden Eagle Ferry to Calhoun County, Ill. crossing the Mississippi River on May 27. Beside them Frank Harris pulls his 1953 Ford Jubilee tractor.

As the sun rises aboard the Golden Eagle Ferry, pilot John Ohlendorf, 61, mans the station as he has for 22 years as cars load north of Kampville in St. Charles County for a ride across the Mississippi River to Calhoun County, Ill. on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

And, because ferries are located where there are no nearby bridges, here the location is the pastoral heartland of middle America. When you get on, and when you drive off the ferry, it will be along picturesque roads you may have never had a reason to travel.

Even the downside of having to pass time until the boat returns from the opposite shore to pick you up can be considered an adventure. The wait to get on board might take longer than the ride across the water, adding to the anticipation of the short voyage.

If the ferry is on the opposite bank, a sign at the landing may give you the phone number on the ferry to call the pilot house onboard the boat to ask them to come and pick you up. At the Dorena-to-Hickman ferry there is a call button on a pole, while at the Ste. Genevieve ferry, cars are told to flash their lights to get the attention of the ferry pilot across the river.

Just the drive onto the ferry platform is an adventure. If the river is low, the approach can be a very steep descent down to the shore and onto the ferry platform. Then the ramp onto the boat makes unfamiliar sounds as the cars and trucks board, and the boat sways and tilts under each new load.

And, if you are the first car on board driving to the edge of the ferry it can be disconcerting knowing a misstep on the gas pedal could possibly propel you into the barricade at the end of the flat ferry deck.

Gunnar watches out for more visitors with treats after getting one from Golden Eagle Ferry deckhand Ann Ray, as he rides with Jeff and Tammie Smith of the Golden Eagle community on May 21. Jeff Smith, recently diagnosed with cancer, rides the ferry for free to his cancer treatments in St. Peters, thanks to the ferry company owners. “That’s a tremendous effort on their part,” said Smith.

Shawn Ohlendorf rests after work while visiting his dad, pilot John Ohlendorf, as his car rides aboard the Golden Eagle Ferry on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Shawn, who works an overnight 12-hour-shift at a cleaning chemical manufacturer in Maryland Heights, lives in Calhoun County, Ill.

Local ferries vary in how many cars and what they can carry in addition to automobiles, but the Dorena-Hickman Ferry has no restrictions. “As long as the cargo is not hazardous, we can take anything you can get on board,” Mayo says. “We can load up to 18 cars or a combination of farm combines and tractor-trailer trucks. Once we had an airplane on a trailer.”

Each passage is also an adventure for the ferryboat captain who uses a combination of river current, engine power and rudder to guide the front of the barge onto the ramp at the ferry dock.

Mayo says: “The current can change minute to minute. The wind makes a difference. Passing barges create waves. Sometimes we are dodging southbound trees floating downriver, and pleasure boats.”

Still, while many enjoy riding ferries for pleasure, the boats remain an essential transportation service to the communities they serve. “A ferry is located where it is the most convenient way across the river, and when the closest bridge shuts down, we’re ‘it,’” Mayo says.

The Golden Eagle Ferry prepares to dock north of Kampville in St. Charles County from Calhoun County, Ill., as commuters ride across the Mississippi River after sunrise on May 21.

John Ohlendorf pilots the Golden Eagle Ferry from Calhoun County, Illinois, to St. Charles County across the Mississippi River on May 21. Ohlendorf, 61, lives in the Golden Eagle community and has been a ferry pilot for 22 years.

Vivian rides the Golden Eagle Ferry in the lap of her owner Jennifer Firestine-Scanlon as they head to Lindenwood University across the Mississippi River where she works as a chemistry professor on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

“I got my first paycheck in the fifth grade,” said deckhand Ann Ray as she visits with pilot John Ohlendorf aboard the Golden Eagle Ferry on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Ray has worked in her family’s business since grade school.

Golden Eagle Ferry pilot John Ohlendorf parks his ferry as barges move north on the Mississippi River on May 21. Ohlendorf stays docked until river traffic passes when the vessels approach a half-mile separation.

Damn Fine Hand Pies now open in Shaw

The farmers’ market favorite opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the South City neighborhood on June 1.

Fans of the hand pies, doughnuts, and fritters from Damn Fine Hand Pies have a new place to get their fix. Owners Gene Bailey and Madeline Hissong have moved to a brick-and-mortar eatery at 4000 Shaw Boulevard.

After signing a lease last fall, Bailey and Hissong revamped the former barbecue restaurant space into an oasis of sweet and savory baked goods. Thanks to the increased kitchen space, they’re able to offer new items, ranging from cakes to toasts to sandwiches, while still keeping the favorites that made their farmers’ market stall such a success.

Soon the website will be up and running for preorders, but for now, the menu is first-come, first-served. Here’s what to know before you go.

The iconic items from the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market menu are still available, though the market stall is on pause while they get the new restaurant up and running. These include hand pies such as sausage gravy and dill cream cheese with everything seasoning, as well as sweet versions. (Strawberry gooey butter cake is the special for opening weekend.)

The doughnuts are there, too: various flavors of sourdough or vegan sourdough brioche, fritters, and old-fashioned cake (including their best seller, the classic brown butter)—and, of course, seasonal fruit-filled variations, such as strawberry-rhubarb.

Then there are the breads, both simple versions such as the country or brioche loaf and the olive oil and sea salt focaccia, as well as more complex flavors such as Calabrian chili and lemon zest focaccia.

Newly added items include an angel food cake that received rave reviews during pop-ups, focaccia toast with jam, and a breakfast sandwich with eggs, cheese, aioli, and optional bacon fried on the grill.

Gene Bailey

Bailey says there are many reasons that he and Hissong clicked as business partners. One is their willingness to work in any facet of the business, including assembling kitchen equipment. Bailey is at home in the kitchen, while Hissong has strong business sense. And they both have a strong instinct for hospitality, honed over many years in the industry.

They met at Juniper, where Bailey was consulting after a decade of working with his brother, Dave Bailey, on various restaurants including Baileys’ Chocolate Bar, Rooster, and Bridge Tap House. Hissong, who is originally from a small town in Indiana, where her grandmother was a celebrated piemaker, was part of the culinary team.

“Madeline has an infectious warmth and kindness, but she can also be tough as nails,” Bailey says. He wasn’t surprised about the dedicated community that she built up via her market stand and pop-ups—and he wasn’t daunted when she stuck to her own timeline for growth, including her initial reluctance to add the sourdough breads that are now a menu staple.

Madeline Hissong

Many of the menu items have stories behind them, including the sourdough. “Our starter’s name is Daphne, she is 4 years old, and she brings the extra flavor to our breads,” Bailey says. The doughnuts came about when Hissong poked a hole in some brioche dough and fried it. The fritters were in development for roughly a year before their first employee, Michael Allen, shared the know-how that led them to perfect the recipe. The strawberry gooey butter cake originated with their baker, Hay “Wojo” Wojcicki, who has a background at some of the region’s top bakeries.

Expect similar creativity from the coffee menu, which is being developed by an in-house team. “Madeline and I are OK baristas, but these guys are killing it at that station,” Bailey says.

20240526_DamnFineHandpies-5985_websize.jpg

Another connection between Bailey, Hissong, and some members of the team is their journey toward sobriety. Bailey is going on eight years sober, while Hissong celebrated her fifth anniversary during the week leading up to the restaurant’s opening. “The strength it gives me each day among the stress is amazing,” Bailey says. “It’s running through the veins of everything we do.”

Bailey is proud of the supportive team that has assembled around Hissong, which includes her boyfriend and mother, who tirelessly washed dishes after market days and has been crocheting doughnuts to hang in the café.

The Atmosphere

In building out the kitchen and sales counter that dominates the shop’s front room, Bailey says they prioritized space for the bakery and for prep. “The most fun part was figuring out how to re-create the Damn Fine Hand Pies experience,” he adds.

20240526_DamnFineHandpies-5976_websize.jpg

They were fortunate to have many contractors and artisan builders within their network of family and friends, including Tyson Rinderknecht as general contractor and the woodwork expertise of Nome Furniture. Graniterra cut the counters to their exact specifications to allow space for the racks that double as display cases and for the sales registers, which are positioned to mimic the setup at the market stall.

20240531_144331.jpg

Nicolas Holman

Bailey is eager for visitors to check out the restroom, where hand-painted pastries seem to levitate off the walls. Fellow market vendor (and frequent customer) Nicolas Holman customized the room, complete with one of the bright-pink Simpsons -like doughnuts that Hissong makes for fun and two of Holman’s signature fried eggs.

Although the space is diminutive, Bailey and Hissong have maximized the layout and adapted as needed—for example, the walk-in cooler is actually located behind the building.

Bailey says their initial sales goals were based on their two-day-a-week appearances at the farmers’ markets, but based on the sales volumes and per-ticket amounts, they will likely surpass their goals quickly.

They also intend to continue offering catering—both baked goods and full menus for events, such as weddings—and selling breads to wholesale customers. “We want to get our catering menu up soon so customers can see those offerings,” Bailey says. They also plan to do pop-ups and occasional appearances at the farmers’ markets where the Damn Fine Hand Pies legacy began.

“We have the team now to move things from idea to product much faster,” Bailey says. “The sky’s the limit when we have these new kitchen tools and these amazing people.”
