Kenya tourism

Kenya Tourism

It was in the early 1930s, when Kenya was still under British Colonial rule, that the first wildlife safaris in Africa, in the form of expeditions into the unexplored wilderness teeming with magnificent wild animals, were held. This marked the beginning of Kenya Tourism. To view a wildlife paradise in incredible places like Masai Mara and Amboseli, the Safari package originated in modern-day Kenya.

Kenya Safari Packages & Tours

Kenya Map

The original safari package destination, Kenya in East Africa stretches from the Indian Ocean coast in the east to Lake Victoria in the west, and borders  Tanzania in the south. Encompassing savannah plains, fresh water lakes  and acacia forests – and home to the  Big 5 (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino), Kenya promises a classic safari experience. There’s a nostalgia here that recalls canvas luxury tents with gin and tonic sunset cocktails. On a Kenya safari package holiday, it’s easy to believe you’re in a scene straight from “Out of Africa.”

Those in the know will tell you that the ultimate luxury Kenya safari package includes wildlife viewing and luxury lodges. Witness the Great Migration in the Masai Mara . See the snow-capped vista of Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli National Park , and take part in authentic cultural encounters with local Maasai tribes.

Of course, it is the Great Wildebeest Migration travel packages that are the main drawcard for Kenya safari travelers. The annual event sees some 1.4 million wildebeest and a few hundred thousand zebras travel through Tanzania ’s vast Serengeti National Park into the famed Masai Mara, Kenya, in search of new grazing. Beyond the well-known Masai Mara, Kenya is also home to Lake Nakuru National Park , famous for its large herds of antelope and hundreds of colorful bird species, as well as the community driven conservancies of Laikipia in the north (situated close to imposing Mount Kenya ). Don’t be surprised, however, if the tall and dignified red-robed Maasai steal the show. These semi-nomadic people are one of the world’s last great warrior cultures and an enduring symbol of traditional Kenyan culture.

Kenya is a picture-perfect destination for bush-and-beach vacations. When you have had your fill of the wild, head straight to the country’s tropical Indian Ocean coastline, home to the pristine shores of popular island-style destinations such as Diani Beach. Here, the white sandy beaches invite you to go on adventures like diving, snorkelling , windsurfing, or just to put your feet up, kick back and adjust your body clock to Kenya time. When exploring Kenya, make sure to visit the Kenyan coast and the idyllic seaside city of Mombasa .  Kenya also combines easily with Tanzania, and Rwanda , allowing you to  add  gorilla trekking to your combo Kenya safari package.

For honeymooners , a Kenya safari package with Explorer Safari epitomises  classic luxury. For families , a Kenya vacation is a more affordable option than other, more remote regions in Africa, with plenty of child-friendly lodges catering to the needs of young adventurers (and adventurers who are young at heart).

Best Time to Visit Kenya on Safari:

Game viewing on a Kenya safari is at its best during the dry seasons (May to September, and January through February). The safari high season runs from July through November, when the annual Great Wildebeest Migration is in full swing. If you’re a bird-watching enthusiast, visit Kenya between October and April when the migrant species have arrived.

The Masai Mara in Kenya offers spectacular game viewing and is a popular destination for Great Migration tours.

Witness striking Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli National Park, home to the biggest tusker elephants in Africa.

Learn about the lifestyle of the Maasai people, Kenya’s fascinating pastoral tribe.

Top Destinations in Kenya

The Masai Mara National Reserve  is  Kenya ’s flagship game park, and  forms  part   of  one  the largest natural ecosystems in East Africa, extending over the Kenyan border into  Tanzania , where it meets the Serengeti National Park.   The park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including the  illustrious  Big 5  (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino).

The biggest drawcard for visitors on safari in Masai Mara is  t he Great Wildebeest Migration ,  in which almost  2 million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra migrate from the  Serengeti  to the Masai Mara.  Mos t people choose to book a Masai Mara safari during June and July,  when  the migration arrives at   the infamous Mara River for the deadly crossing s .   As crocodiles snap up wildebeest, zebra and gazelle, photographers delight in capturing the incredible moments on camera.

However,  the  Great M igration is not the only attraction. The  Masai Mara Nationa l  R eserve is known for its truly spectacular game viewing  all year round . L ion, elephant, cheetah and leopard are all seen regularly  in the wide-open s avannah  plains  and hilly landscape s of the game reserve . Kenya is also  a top-class  bird watching destination,  and the Masai Mara is no exception.

A   safari in the  Masai Mara  provides opportunity for authentic cultural experiences.   A lso known as ‘ The Mara ’ by locals,  the national reserve  was named in honor of the ancestral Maasai people who still live traditional lifestyles in the area. A visit to one of the local villages is a real highlight. You’ll get to experience their unique way of life, and perhaps even witness the competitive jumping dance of the warriors!

Best Time to Visit the Masai Mara:

A Masai Mara safari offers year-round game viewing, during both the dry and green season. If you are keen to witness the wildebeest crossing of the Mara River, then you’ll need to be in the reserve in June – July. But be warned! This is high season in the  Mara, and you’ll want to book your Great Migration   package far in advance to ensure your spot. Consider combining your safari with a trip to Amboseli National Park for exceptional views of Mount Kilimanjaro, with Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley region, or with Laikipia in northern Kenya.

Amboseli National Park is an interesting place. Wholey part of Kenya , its one great attraction is its exceptional views of Mount Kilimanjaro, situated across the border in Tanzania . The largest free-standing mountain in the world – and the largest in Africa – towers above the plains, i ts snowy peak quite frequently covered by cloud. But it provides a jaw-dropping backdrop to an Amboseli  safari and  sets the scene for giants.

The iconic views of Amboseli, with Kili in the background, include herds of elephant, some of whom boast the largest tusks in Africa. The park is ideal for year-round  game-viewing, as its grassy plains are dotted with low scrub making it easy to spot  large game like elephant, buffalo and lion. Other popular wildlife to spot in Amboseli include cheetah, leopard and wild dog, as well as giraffe and a variety of antelope species. Birder s are encouraged to keep an eye out for raptors!

Amboseli is situated south-east of Nairobi and is best accessed via a short flight over the plains. It is not a large park, but it offers spectacular views and e xceptional game-viewing, plus there is a variety of safari accommodation on offer – including lodges and tented camps.

We recommend combining a stay in Amboseli with a migration safari in the Masai Mara , but it’s also easily accessible from Tanzania, so a cross-border trip to the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater is entirely possible. If you’re looking for a n intimate stay, then consider adding on a couple of nights at  neighboring  Chyulu Hills National Park, which enjoys ancient volcanic, hilly terrain.

Best Time to Visit Amboseli

The best time to visit Amboseli is normally in the dry season months between May and August, however game-viewing continues to be superb throughout the year. The wetter period from late November into February brings forth much new life to the  region and  is more popular with birders.

Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya’s largest soda lakes and  is best known for attracting large flocks of bright pink greater and lesser flamingos, whose bright plumage can be seen for miles.  The Lake is truly a birder’s paradise, and during the right season or when the weather conditions are  a m e nable ,  tens of thousands of water birds gather to feed on the shores.

Some of the  birds  worth watching out for include the great white pelican, the blue-billed teal and the greater blue-eared starling. Do note however, that the flamingos visit Lake Nakuru perennially, also making visits to other soda-lakes in the Rift Valley region.

The best time to visit Lake Nakuru for birding is between November and April – which includes the shoulder season and wet summer rains. Breeding season is in full throng, and the males show off fantastically with their puff ed-up, bright plumage. But Lake Nakuru is also a national park, and  its  expanse is also home to a diverse number of animal species, such as impala, waterbuck,  baboon  and warthog. You may even spot the rare Roths child’s giraffe, and both black and white rhino.

Lake Nakuru is situated in west-central Kenya and forms part of the Great Rift Valley region, which is  characterized by several s oda lakes. Make sure to add a visit here into your longer K enyan safari itinerary, as it’s a wonderful link  between the  Aberdares  and Mount Kenya National Parks, and the Masai Mara for the Great Migration .

Best Time to Visit Lake Nakuru

The best time to visit to visit Lake Nakuru is during the wetter summer months (November through April) as this is ideal for birding. However, the game-viewing is good throughout the year, and a visit here can be enjoyed during the peak dry season  when safaris are most popular in the Masai Mara and Amboseli .

The vast Laikipia Plateau stretches from the slopes of Mount Kenya to the rim of the Great Rift Valley and is set against the edge of Kenya ’s Northern Frontier. This unique landscape is  dedicated to both conservation and community, allowing the local pastoral people a place to exist in their natural state as well as to contribute to their ow n traditional lands in terms of wildlife protection and biodiversity.

Laikipia is made up mostly of conservancies and ranches which are knitted together along with the cattle ranches and fa rms in the region.  The conservancies, which include  Loisaba , Ol Pejeta, Solio Ranch, Ol  Lentille  and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, have a variety of outreach programs for the local people in their communities, as well as some significant wildlife protection initiatives.

Endangered black and white rhino, Grevy’s zebra, northern elephant herds and large predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena, are some of the animals that enjoy the protection and conservation of the local conservancies  in Laikipia. Visiting one of the lodges or tented camps here will allow you the opportunity to learn more about what is being done to preserve Kenya’s wildlife, as well as to see how t he local farming and ranching communities play their part in conservation.

We recommend combining a trip to Laikipia with a Masai Mara safari , as you will truly experience two very different safaris in one trip. Laikipia is also close to Mount Kenya National Park  and Shaba National Reserve, which is famous for being the setting of the book and film  Born Free  featuring  Joy Adamson and the lioness Elsa.

Best Time to Visit Laikipia

The best time to visit Laikipia is during the dry season (June to September) when the game-viewing is at its optimum. However, do note that June to October and December through March are considered peak season, and you will need to book in advance to secure your spot to the area.

Tall and imposing, Mount Kenya looms above the Great Rift Valley in Central  Kenya , and  holds the title of highest mountain in Kenya – and  second  only to Mount Kilimanjaro in  neighboring   Tanzania in the whole of Africa. This stratovol c ano is a tough climb. Eroded slopes and steep valleys  characterize   Mount  Kenya, and even a few glaciers make up part of t he terrain.

While the upper echelons of the mountain may be restricted to those more experienced high-mountain climbers, the lower slopes and mountain forest at the base has been proclaimed a National Park   and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.  The varied landscape provides excellent forest trekking opportunities where you can spot several species of monkeys, antelopes, the tree hyrax, po rcupines and bigger game such as elephant and buffalo. Hyena and leopard are also found in the National Park.

One of the great attractions of Mount Kenya  is both trekking and climbing. Visitor s   c a n   o p t   t o   e n j o y   a   m u l t i – d a y   t r e k   u p   t o   t h e   s u m m i t   a r e a ,   o r   t o   i n c l u d e   t h e   f u l l c l i m b   s e q u e n c e   w h i c h   i n c l u d e s   s u m m i t t i n g   o n e   o f   t h e   m a i n   p e a k s .

T h e r e   a r e   a l s o   a   n u m b e r   o f   s m a l l   e t h n i c   c o m m u n ities living around Mount Kenya, including the Kikuyu,  Ameru  and the Embu  – and all hold the mountain in great esteem and spiritual signifi cance. Many of the camps and lodges in the area both employee and support the local people, and your visit contribut es to this.

We recommend adding  Mount  Kenya to a larger Kenyan itinerary, which can include visits to the nearby Laikipia region , to  Aberdares  National Park towards the south, or with popular reserves like Amboseli and the Masai Mara .

Best Time to Visit Mount Kenya

The summer season between December and March offers the warmest, sunniest weather and is considered the best time to visit Mount Kenya. You can expect some rain between March and May and again from October onwards, which may draw up cloudier conditions so that your mountain views are restricted. However, the National Park is worth visiting all year round.

Kenya’s picturesque coastline was once a haven for Arabian traders and European  colonialists, but  is now  most well-known for its beautiful white-sand beaches, vibrant community markets, local fish sellers, diving expeditions and variety of various resorts and hotels. This is not to say it’s been untouched by it s past; a unique collection of mosques, churches, ruins and forts are scattered from Diani in the south, Mombasa in the center and Lamu in the north.

Mombasa is perhaps most well-known. This high-profile Kenyan coastal town attracts a variety of  holidaymakers  and locals alike. If you’re looking for a fun-filled holiday, where you can go from beach sand to night club or restaurant, Mombasa is your choice.  For those who enjoy diving or  snorkeling , or deep-sea fishing, Mombasa also packs a punch.

On the southern coast, you’ll find popular Diani beach – ideal for families or groups of friends. This is the classic Kenya beach holiday destination – beautiful views, exceptional off-shore reefs and plenty of relaxation.  North of Mombasa you’ll find Malindi, which is  popular  with expats and  holidaymakers  from the  United States, the  UK and Europe. This  clean and pretty  beach town offers a more secluded, quieter holiday experience.

In the far north you’ll find the Lamu Archipelago, a tiny little island cluster just off the Kenyan coast. A holiday here is dreamy and private, with private beach villas and a real down-to-earth relaxed atmosphere.

We recommend combining a few days on the Kenyan coast with a full-scale Kenya safari to some of the country’s top parks, like the Masai Mara , Amboseli and Lake Nakuru .

Best Time to Visit Kenya’s Coast

The best time to visit Kenya’s coastal towns and beaches is usually between October and January, as the conditions for diving and snorkeling are optimum. However, the humidity on the coast  is fairly high all year  round,  although we’d suggest avoiding the mid-March to May rainy season. With most safari experiences at their best during the dry season (May – August), adding on a beach holiday after that is  enjoyable .

Its national parks provide you the ideal opportunity to become a part of all kinds of activities that range from sunbathing and scuba diving to spa hopping and hiking. Holidays to Kenya is incomplete with a visit to Masai Maara, home to the Great Migration, is the most famous national park in Kenya, but Mount Kenya is equally enthralling.

Travel Highlights

  • Visit the islands off the coast of Kenya.

Travel Tips

  • Bring your malaria pills! There is a high possibility you could get sick if you forget them.
  • Bugs can be more dangerous than big animals; bring bug spray and long sleeves and pants.
  • If you’re in Nairobi, be careful and ask your hostel which parts are safe for visitors.
  • Be prepared for hot weather, but also pack options; the weather can be a little unpredictable.
  • Never approach the wildlife, no matter how safe or docile they may seem.
  • Drink only bottled water.

PLAN & BOOK TODAY!

Plan ahead to ensure a seamless experience. Booking a trip to Masai Mara should ideally be made six to nine months in advance, especially for peak season travel in July and August during the Great Migration phenomenon, often regarded as the most incredible wildlife show on the planet. Travel agents, camps, lodges, and Kenya safari companies can efficiently assist in planning and booking your safari, which can also include cultural Maasai visits, bush walks or hot air balloon safaris, night game drives, and horse safaris.

A well-planned and booked Masai Mara Safari tour through a reputable Kenya operator provides a hassle-free experience and an opportunity to secure a spot in one of the top-notch lodges and camps in Masai Mara. Masai Mara Holidays Limited is a local operator company in East Africa known for its best Masai Mara safaris, as recommended on TripAdvisor. Our safari experts are always readily available to assist with planning.

Visitors can choose different safari circuits based on combinations with other parks, such as the Rift Valley Lakes, Amboseli National Park, Samburu National Reserve, Serengeti National Park in Tanzania or a mountain gorilla trek in Uganda or Rwanda. Booking off-season or outside the park can also reduce costs. However, considerations should be made to budget for airfares, visa, tips, medications, and other sundries and souvenirs.

MASAI MARA SAFARI COST

When planning your Masai Mara safari, it's important to factor in all the costs involved. Most packages offered by safari agents will include transfers, park entrance fees, 4x4 game drives with a guide, meals, and accommodation. It's recommended to compare quotes from different tour operators to find the best deal.

masai mara safari holidays

Booking directly with a lodge or camp may result in all-inclusive prices, which cover accommodation, meals, and game activities. However, transfers to and from the park may not be included, so it's important to factor those in as well. Additionally, budget for airfare, visas, tips, and souvenirs. To cut down on costs while still enjoying a comfortable safari experience, consider staying in a lodge or camp outside the park, booking in the off-season, and researching for cheap flight options. With these tips, you can make the most of your Masai Mara safari without breaking the bank.

MASAI MARA SAFARI PACKAGES AVAILABLE IN KENYA

The price range of your Masai Mara tour will usually be determined by the type of safari package you choose. In Kenya, there are three main types of Masai Mara packages available, including luxury, midrange, and budget packages.

LUXURY MASAI MARA PACKAGES

If you opt for a luxury Masai Mara safari, you can expect to be accommodated in top-of-the-range lodges and camps that offer a host of luxuries like spa treatments, hot showers, comfortable beds, and fine dining experiences. Prices for luxury packages range from USD 400 to USD 1500 per person per night sharing a double room. If you are traveling alone, you should expect to pay a single supplement. Additionally, most luxury packages include chartered flights to and from the park, but you can also opt for ground transfers using a spacious 4x4 pop roof safari Land Cruiser.

MIDRANGE MASAI MARA PACKAGES

For a balance between luxury and budget, midrange Masai Mara safari packages offer moderate accommodation that is both comfortable and reasonably priced. During peak season, you can expect to be accommodated in a comfortable lodge or camp at a cost of $180 to $250 per person sharing per night on full board. However, prices tend to drop a bit in the low season, making midrange packages even more affordable.

BUDGET MASAI MARA PACKAGES

If you're on a tight budget, there are plenty of budget Masai Mara safari packages available that aim to offer the lowest prices possible. To cut costs, most budget packages include tented camps outside of the Masai Mara, but relatively near the closest gate of the park. Prices for budget packages can range from $150 to $300 per person sharing per day, depending on the number of people in your group. However, even with a budget tour, your package should still include park entrance fees, transportation, meals, and accommodation.

EXPERIENCE THE BEST AFRICAN SAFARI WITH KIDS IN THE MASAI MARA

A trip to Masai Mara in Kenya with your children is an ideal destination for a family vacation. While there may be some pre-tour requirements, such as vaccinations, the adventures and experiences that await are ultimately worth it.

masai mara

Witnessing the Great Migration with your kids is undoubtedly one of the most unforgettable and memorable experiences you can share as a family. But even outside the migration season, watching wildlife up close, witnessing lion cubs at play, and cheetahs darting across the plains are all moments your children will treasure for years to come.

When planning your safari, it's crucial to let your operator know that you'll be traveling with children so that they can customize the experience to suit your family. Kids often adapt to new environments and cultures easier, and watching them interact with Maasai children will create memories that will last a lifetime. Educating your children on new languages and traditions will also ignite their curiosity and interest.

For comfortable lodging, opt for midrange and luxury accommodations that cater to children's needs. Safari lodges are especially child-friendly, with the flexibility to add an extra bed and offering unique programs for children to engage in while adults embark on game drives and other activities.

Lastly, a combination of a Masai Mara safari and beach vacation is an excellent way to keep your kids entertained and happy. After witnessing the beauty of the Mara, bask in the sun and sand for the ultimate family holiday

CHOOSING YOUR MASAI MARA LODGING OR CAMP

When deciding on the perfect lodging or camp for your safari in the Masai Mara, there are several factors to consider. The choice of accommodation is vital in determining the kind of experience you will have in the Masai Mara. There is a wide range of lodges and camps available, from tented camps to safari lodges, with varying levels of comfort and style.

To make the right choice, it is important to consider your priorities. Smaller camps and lodges offer a more personalized experience, with staff more likely to accommodate your preferences in terms of scheduling. Larger properties, on the other hand, tend to have a more rigid schedule but are generally more affordable.

masai mara holiday

Location is also a critical element to consider. Lodges and camps located within the Masai Mara provide better opportunities for game viewing, but they can be more expensive. If budget is a concern, lodges located outside the park might be a better option.

Different areas of the Masai Mara offer different opportunities for game viewing, depending on the time of year. Some lodges and camps are located along the migration routes taken by wildebeest during the great migration, which is ideal for those interested in witnessing the migration up close and personal.

masai mara safari

When making a decision, it can be helpful to look up reviews from past guests to get an idea of what your experience might be like. However, the best approach is to book with an experienced African safari operator who knows the area well and can help guide your decision. They can recommend lodges and camps that provide the best game experience, food, service, and accommodation within your budget. In the end, choosing the right lodging or camp can greatly enhance your Masai Mara safari experience.

WHEN TO VISIT THE MASAI MARA?

Generally, weather in Kenya is governed by two seasons; dry and rainy seasons. The best months for visiting The Masai Mara are during the dry months as game viewing is spectacular at this time of the year. Dryer months also mean lesser mosquitoes and easy access to most remote parts of the park. The dry months are January to March and June to September. If you are interested in the wildebeest migration as it happens in the Masai Mara, July to early October is a good time to visit Masai Mara Kenya .

masai mara safari

Many Accommodations in Masai Mara will close during the long rains of April and May considered as the low season, this is a perfect time to score the best deals on lodging when you visit the Mara. However, getting around during these rainy months (October and November as well) can be difficult, as dirt roads turn into mud and many become impassable.

THINGS TO DO IN THE MASAI MARA

The Masai Mara is a remarkable destination year-round, but from July to October, the park comes to life with the spectacular Great Wildebeest Migration. Millions of wildebeest and other grazers undertake an epic journey through the plains, trailed by prides of lions, lurking leopards, solitary hyenas, and packs of hyenas. This is the perfect time to witness the animal kingdom in action, with unrivalled safari experiences that are not to be missed.

GUIDED WALKING SAFARIS:

EXPLORE THE MASAI MARA

The central plains, situated in the southern part of the park, are bordered by the Mara River in the west and Sand River in the south. This area is characterized by rolling grassland and isolated low hills. Most notably, it is home to the legendary "marsh pride" of big cats near the Musiara swamp. During the migration, thousands of wildebeests and other grazers graze here, making it an ideal location for game viewing. The riverine forests bordering the Mara and Talek rivers are also great spots to witness elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and bushbucks.

Rhino Ridge and Paradise Plains are the perfect spots to catch a glimpse of cheetahs in action, with open grasslands providing a good vantage point. Leopards can be found in the vicinity of Leopard Gorge, while the prominent Rhino Ridge offers a good place to spot black-backed jackals. The look-out hill offers a spectacular view of the Mara River crossings.

masai mara

The Mara and Talek Rivers are the only perennial waterways in the Masai Mara. Both rivers are home to pods of hippos, though the Mara River boasts the largest and most permanent group. Nile crocodiles, otters, and various riverine bird species also call the rivers home. Elusive leopards, vervet monkeys, and bushbucks can be found in the riverine forests bordering the rivers.

The most spectacular event in the Masai Mara is the migration of wildebeests as they cross the Mara River. About eight crossing points can be found, with the four most regularly used spots along the 5km stretch of the Mara upriver of its confluence with the Talek. The Mara Triangle, the most picturesque part of the reserve, is located west of the Masai Mara and is an ideal location for spotting big cats and other members of the big five.

masai mara holidays

For the ultimate luxury experience, visitors can split their Masai Mara safari between the Masai Mara National Reserve (for quick access to the migration) and private conservancies such as The Mara North Conservancy, Naibosho Conservancy, Olare-Orok Conservancy, Olarro Conservancy, Olderiskesi Conservancy, and Siana Group Ranch and Conservancy. These private conservancies offer more privacy and exclusive access to game viewing, making them ideal options for those looking for a more intimate safari experience.

WILDLIFE AND BIODIVERSITY

Besides the Big Five, Masai Mara is also famous for its cheetahs, the fastest land animals that can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour). The cheetahs are often seen hunting their prey, such as gazelles and impalas, on the open plains. Masai Mara is also the home of the largest population of wildebeests in the world, estimated at 1.5 million individuals. The wildebeests are the main participants of the Great Migration, along with zebras, elands, topis, and other herbivores. Masai Mara also hosts a variety of other wildlife, such as giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, jackals, foxes, mongooses, warthogs, baboons, monkeys, and antelopes. The birdlife in Masai Mara is equally diverse and colorful, with over 570 species recorded. Some of the notable birds include ostriches, eagles, vultures, storks, cranes, flamingos, kingfishers, bee-eaters, hornbills, and weavers.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

The Great Migration is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. It is a seasonal movement of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Masai Mara in Kenya and back again. The migration is driven by the availability of food and water, as the animals follow the rains and the growth of new grass. The migration cycle lasts for a year and covers a distance of about 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles). The migration is not a linear or predictable process, but rather a complex and dynamic one that depends on various factors such as weather, predators, and human activities. The migration can be divided into four phases: calving, rutting, crossing, and grazing.

The Great Migration in the Masai Mara is a unique and awe-inspiring spectacle that attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to witness this natural wonder.

CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

To address these threats, various conservation efforts have been initiated in Masai Mara by different stakeholders such as government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private sector entities, and local communities. Some of these efforts include:

- Anti-poaching initiatives: Anti-poaching initiatives aim to prevent and combat poaching through law enforcement, surveillance, intelligence, and education. Anti-poaching initiatives involve the collaboration of rangers.

HOW TO GET TO MASAI MARA KENYA?

If you're planning a trip to Masai Mara Kenya, you'll find it easy to get there from Nairobi. Most Masai Mara safaris begin and end in the capital city, so you can fly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and then either fly or drive to the park. Game drives in Masai Mara are typically conducted in open vehicles that offer excellent visibility of the park's wildlife. There are two types of open vehicles: 4x4 Safari vans or land cruisers with a pop roof, and open sided vehicles that are commonly used by lodge and camp operators. While open-sided vehicles provide unobstructed 360-degree views, open vehicles offer more protection from the elements.

masai mara safari tours

If you're driving to Masai Mara, it's a 4.5-hour trip on a smooth, tarmacked road. This drives takes you through Nairobi's suburbs to the Great Rift Valley View Point. From there, it's a two-hour drive to the park gate. Flying is a popular way to get to Masai Mara, and flights depart from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to one of several airstrips in the park. The choice of airstrip is dictated by your booked accommodation, which can also arrange to pick you up at the airstrip. In term of wildlife, the Serengeti boasts of huge numbers of wildlife spread over a larger expanse that cannot be fully explored with limited time, whereas the Masai Mara equally offers huge amounts of wildlife spread over a relatively smaller area that can easily be explored on a minimum of 3 days trip .

MASAI MARA SAFARI IN THE MAIN RESERVE OR THE PRIVATE MASAI MARA CONSERVANCIES?

If you are looking for a safari experience with out the crowds, it is advisable to book your Masai Mara safari within a private conservancy. Generally, the conservancies offer a more exclusive experience, since vehicles based in the main reserve won't have to be traversing rights over the private lands where number tend to be limited.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GO TO MASAI MARA?

The park fee to Masai Mara National Reserve is USD 80 per adult or USD 40 per child, however, the fees to access the private conservancies of the Masai Mara are often higher as they may include access to the main reserve if you are to stay in one of the conservancies. The general cost of a private safari to Masai Mara varies with your lodge or camp and vehicle preference on top of the number of people that will be visiting. We recommend you get in touch with a reputable Kenya Safari Masai Mara Operator to get the best out of your trip and cost .

IS KRUGER BETTER THAN THE MASAI MARA?

Kenya's Masai Mara together with South Africa's Kruger National Park are some of Africa's best wildlife safari destinations. Both parks boast of a variety of wildlife to include the big five. Whereas wildlife is what makes them one, these two animal kingdoms are totally different . The Masai Mara is dominated by a Savannah grassland landscape with is notably best for wildlife viewing whereas Kruger on the other hand is highly dominated by a bush landscape known to hinder wildlife viewing which is why most Kruger safaris require an expert known as a tracker whose job is to look into the bushes which n game drives to easily spot wildlife. It is guaranteed that you will easily see much more in terms of wildlife in the Masai Mara than you are likely to see in Kruger National Park. However, if you can afford the luxury of visiting both parks then that's a chance not to be missed.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN THE MASAI MARA?

Depending on your preference, budget and time of visit, the Masai Mara can be visited on a shorter 3 day trip with 2 nights in the park. However, 12 to 16 hours of this time is spent on ground transfer to and from the park therefore an extra day is highly recommended to explore the Masai Mara on an 4 day trip to make the most of your Masai Mara safari .

Kenya Safari Tour Reviews

My 6 day safari with Bon Voyage Safaris to Maasai Mara and Serengeti was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The professionalism, expertise, and passion displayed by the staff, coupled with the breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife, made it an experience beyond compare. I highly recommend Bon Voyage Safaris to anyone seeking an unforgettable safari experience in East Africa.
It was definitely an experience of a lifetime and you would not regret it.
Absolutely fantastic! I was with a lovely group of people, the guide and driver were brilliant and the accommodation was out of this world. Only down side is lots of travelling but the experience made up for it. Loved the Fig Tree and masi mara.

"Peregrine Tour – Classic African Safari Feedback Overall experience: Excellent The principal objectives of this tour were all achieved. We were able to view and photograph nearly all the animals we hoped to see. We had good leaders and drivers and excellent company. Accommodation was satisfactory to excellent and transport was effective if subject to a few deficiencies. There were some hiccups but there was clearly a desire on the part of Peregrine to rectify these as possible. Health and safety One concern as that the transport truck on the last two legs had problems with broken bindings for one of the fuel tanks. The door to the passenger compartment also was jammed and could not be opened from the inside – a worry when we found ourselves sitting directly above the unsafe fuel tank. The door problem was eventually rectified but the fuel tank bindings broke a second time. Itinerary This was comprehensive and a reason we felt this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience most of the attractions of east and south Africa. The trip was certainly undertaken in an environmentally and socially responsible way. Culture We had good interactions with Maasai people, San bushmen and the Cape Malay community as well as with accommodation staff and other guests at the relevant venues. Local drivers/guides for the game drives were also communicative. Accommodation Most venues were excellent. There were some changes from the advised itinerary (which others in the party were given advanced warning of but we were not). Some of these were probably a change to better facilities (e.g. Lake Nakuru Lodge rather than Sleeping Warrior tented camp & Trailblazers Camp rather than Dqae Quare Lodge in Ghanzi). However, inability to stay a second night at Mopane Lodge, Damaraland and the need to move to Khorixas Rest Camp was a definite downgrade. Also the inability to stay at Namibia Desert Lodge and diversion to Swartfontein Hunting Lodge was a major problem given the additional time (2h15m each way) to reach Sossuvlei and Sesriem, despite the excellence of the Lodge itself. Half our group opted not to go on that day trip because of the additional time and the state of the vehicle. Transport – poor Activities – Excellent Meals – excellent The transport was something of a let-down. We appreciate that availability of good appropriate transport in Africa may be limited and what there is may suffer greatly regularly because of the state of the roads. Our benchmark was the truck used when we toured with Peregrine in Mexico last year which had been much more upmarket. However we had problems with each of the trucks used in Africa: 1) Kenya. Reasonable truck. There was no air-conditioning but it was not required in those temperatures. No microphone system for leader. Did have fridge and lockable safe. 2) Maasai Mara. Appropriate vehicles for game drives. Because of rains, tracks had become muddy and local drivers did not appear to have either expertise or equipment to cope and frequently got bogged. This caused a delay of over an hour for us to be picked up after a balloon ride. 3) Tanzania. Truck seemed similar to that used in Kenya but had problems with engine pressure and stalling so (thankfully) we had more time in game drive vehicles than planned. The truck also proved to be very leaky in both passenger and luggage compartments. 4) Victoria Falls-Cape Town. Truck was smaller than the previous two with uncomfortably narrower seats. There was a roof that could be raised but this was unsuitable unless people were very tall. The bindings securing it were continually failing so it rattled throughout. The actual roof was quite low and a real hazard for taller members of the group. It was not a suitable vehicle for an extended game drive (for which it was scheduled in Etosha) as those on inner seats would have had very limited views. The entire group opted to pay an additional US$90 each to use game drive vehicles provided by the lodge. There was an air-conditioning unit of variable effectiveness and initially it leaked badly and had to be switched off. There was no safe or fridge available. More seriously, half way across the Namibian desert, bindings for the second fuel tank broke. Some of the passengers helped to secure it temporarily with a chain and it was “repaired” in Swapokmund but promptly broke again the next day. Safety issues with the jammed door are mentioned above in “Health and Safety”. The transport company replaced the vehicle with a “Sprinter” bus which gave a much more comfortable ride over rough roads but had more limited viewing facility. 5) Namibian border. Because of the change of vehicle, the exit bureaucracy at the Namibian border caused major problems. The transport company were reputedly “too busy” to forward replacement papers for a few hours and we had to wait for 3-4 hours before we could leave the country. Crew Our leader on the first leg was excellent with good local knowledge and excellent communication skills. He demonstrated extraordinarily good prediction skills about the likely movement of animals. He was responsive to the needs and request of the group. The driver on our first leg was competent and safe. Our leader on the second and third legs was also first rate, enthusiastic, approachable, organised and communicative. Both leaders showed a commitment to a high level of responsible tourism. The driver on our second and third legs was also safe and helpful although did get caught a couple of times exceeding the local speed limit (we felt sorry for him as the signs had not been all that clear and helped with his instant fines). The roads were challenging to say the least and he coped well with the difficulties and the broken fuel tank straps. He was rather shy socially but did join the group and we enjoyed looking at his family photos. Booking process There were many emails back and forth but the local contact was always patient and helpful. Trip notes Some of these were out-of-date when we travelled but we had not been notified of alterations, especially regarding changes of accommodation (some others had received updating emails). Had the change to Swartfontein Lodge been notified well in advance with a caution about the transport distance but a well-deserved complimentary description of the lodge, this would have caused less disgruntlement among the party. General comment Peregrine may not be the cheapest tour company but do have a commitment to quality. When inevitable problems arise they do make a strong effort to ameliorate or correct them.

"The Gorilla Experience was amazing, but the overall trip was quite poorly planned. It resulted in us travelling on the bus for8-10 hours a day, often arriving at the camp site only an hour before it was dark. If I had known that this was going to be the case, I would have just flown to Uganda and gone straight to the Gorilla Park! Also our guide was not very good- very little information was given so I felt quite disconnected from the countries.

Most Popular Kenya Tour Packages

Kenya tourism.

Tourism is a vital part of Kenya’s economy. It is the second biggest source of foreign revenue, the largest being agriculture. There has been a lot of growth in the past few years in Kenya’s tourism. Last year, it welcomed more than 2 million tourists, which was 33 percent more than the growth compared to the past years. Consequently, it had a significant impact on the economy. This is why the country takes exceptional care about tourism. The booming economy is attracting a lot of businesses as well, which further improves the scope for Kenya tourism . Travelers plan a Kenya holiday trip because of its beautiful sights and exotic culture. There are a variety of Kenya packages that offer different experiences depending on one’s needs and requirements.

Places to Visit in Kenya

When it comes to booking a Kenya trip, things can get quite overwhelming as there are a lot of popular spots to cover. Every Kenya tour package must include a visit to the famous Masai Mara National Reserve, Maasai villages, community conservancies, and group ranches. The Masai Mara Reserve showcases an amazing ecosystem of flora and fauna. The migration of millions of wildebeests is a sight to behold. There are other national parks in Kenya as well where visitors have a chance to spot the rare and endangered black rhinos. A visit to one of these national reserves is included in all Kenya packages. Wildlife enthusiasts can also opt for a wildlife safari during their Kenya trip. For travelers who want to relax and soak up the sun, there are several beaches including Diani Beach, Nyali, Shanzu, and Vipingo.

Another must-visit location is Lamu, an old town located on a tropical island with a unique culture. Because of the geography of the country, a Kenya holiday trip allows one to experience all kinds of terrains. Mount Kenya is the perfect example of this diversity. It is the second highest peak in Africa. A trek to the summit is quite difficult but reaching its sister peaks is possible in 3 to 5 days. Lake Naivasha is another tourist attraction that should be a part of all Kenya tour packages and should top the list of places to visit in Kenya . It is a freshwater lake whose surroundings have become one of the prime agriculture regions because of its fertile soil and abundant water supply.

Besides the natural beauty in Mombasa, there are a lot of other tourist attractions like Fort Jesus, Mandhry Mosque, Jain Temple, Lord Shiva Temple, and the famous Spice Market. The city is home to beautiful beaches and several temples. Kisumu, which is the third largest city in Kenya, showcases a calmer and more relaxed aura. The small Simbi Lake should be on every traveler’s list. It is a great spot for bird watching. There are several other experiences to indulge in, like going for forest explorations, shopping in the city, visiting museums and monuments, among others.

Best Time to Visit Kenya

The best time to visit Kenya  is during July through September as this is when the great migration takes places and one can witness wildebeests in huge numbers. Travelers can also look for Kenya packages during the rainy season as tourism numbers subside and consequently, exploration and accommodation become easier. July to November is considered as high season while March to May is the low season due to heavy rainfall in some locations. March, April, and May comprise the peak season for rainfall in Kenya. The various national parks and reserves have their best time during this time. So when booking a Kenya tour package, make sure to keep the seasons in mind.
