How to view your location history in Google Maps

Google Maps has a nifty Timeline feature that lets you browse the places you've visited along with the routes traveled. The Timeline received a good overhaul in 2015, and Google has since added the ability to collate images you've taken at particular locations, allowing you to get a better overview of all your travels. This feature certainly comes in handy if you're looking to see all the images you took at a particular location or if you're trying to get a highlight of your weekly or monthly activities. Here's how to view your location history in Google Maps.

How to disable location tracking

• Launch Google Maps .
• Tap your profile picture on the top right corner.
• Tap Your Timeline .

• Swipe left or right to switch months .
• Tap a date to view your location history . You'll see the route traveled, along with the duration and length of the overall journey. Source: Namerah Saud Fatmi / Android Central

Timeline is certainly a useful feature if you're interested in browsing your previous travel data, but it also comes off as creepy (Google tracks everything ). Fortunately, you can easily turn off location tracking in Maps to stop Google Maps from storing your location .

Android Basics : How to View Your Location History

Your smartphone has a GPS chip inside of it that can pinpoint your location down to the nearest 4 meters, and this little device stays in your pocket or purse all day. Combine those two facts and you start to realize that your phone knows exactly where you've been during every moment that has passed since you've owned it.

That might sound a little creepy to some, but rest assured, this information is not logged unless you explicitly chose to enable location tracking. For those that are comfortable with this concept, there's a simple way to view and manage your location history, so you'll always be able to know exactly where you were on a particular day.

Enabling Location History

As I mentioned, Android does not keep a log of your location history by default. There are prompts that appear the first time you log into your device, however, so if you've already enabled location history, you can skip ahead to the next section.

If you haven't enabled location history yet and you'd like to start keeping a running log of where you've been, start by opening the Google app. From here, choose the "Settings" entry in the side navigation menu, then select "Google activity controls."

Next, select the "Google Location History" entry on the following screen. From here, simply enable the overall service with the switch at the top of the screen, then make sure to enable the service for the device you're using as well. Starting now, your device will keep detailed logs of all the places you visit, and this information will only be accessible to you.

Viewing Location History

Once your device has accumulated some location history, it can be accessed at any time by opening the Google Maps app. From here, head to the side navigation menu and select "Your timeline," where you'll see the location data for today.

From here, you can tap the month at the top of the screen to expose a calendar view, where you can pick any date to see where you were. Once you've selected a date, you can swipe down to expand the map view, or swipe up to expand the list view.

From here, you can tap an entry if you'd like to view more details or perhaps delete this location from your history. Then if you have geotag features enabled in your camera app, you'll even see the pictures you took at certain locations on your timeline.

How to see your Google Maps timeline in the mobile app

How to see your google maps timeline on the website, how to check your google maps timeline and see every place you've traveled.

• Your Google Maps timeline shows all the countries, cities, and attractions you've visited.
• You can see your timeline in the Google Maps mobile app and on the website.
• You'll need to make sure you have Location History enabled on your Google account for the timeline to work.

Nearly every major app tracks your location in some way. And while most try to keep this a secret (and won't even tell you why they need it), Google Maps is pretty public when it comes to using your location.

But Google Maps doesn't just use it to give you directions and show your current location . If you have it enabled, you can also create a Google Maps timeline , which lets you see where you traveled on a specific day, any attractions or restaurants you've visited, towns you've been to, and countries that you've traveled in.

Here's how to check your Google Maps timeline — and how to enable Location History so you can make a timeline in the first place.

1. Open Google Maps on your iPhone or Android, and tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.

2. Tap Your timeline .

The screen will change, and a large menu will appear with a variety of options at the top. They'll be a bit different depending on whether you're using an iPhone or Android.

On both devices, you'll see:

• Day: Here, you can see all the places you've visited in a single day. It'll also show you how you got there (via subway, car, etc.) and how long you spent at each location.
• Places: This shows the different restaurants, attractions, shops, hotels, and more you've visited. They'll be sorted into different categories, which you can tap to see a full list.
• Cities: You'll get a list of all the towns and cities you've visited, and when you visited them. Tap a city name to see where you went in that city and how often.
• World: A list of all the countries you've traveled to. Tap a country in the list to see which cities you've gone to.

If you're using an Android, you'll also see Trips and Insights . Trips shows (as the name suggests) the vacations and getaways you've taken. Insights tracks how much time you've spent walking, driving, and taking public transit every month, along with how far you've traveled and what you spent your time doing.

You can find the timeline on the Google Maps website too, but it looks a bit different.

1. Open Google Maps on your computer and click the three stacked lines in the top-left corner.

2. Select Your timeline .

You'll be brought to the Timeline page. Here, you can:

• Click one of the blue bars at the top-left of the screen or enter a specific day to see all the places you traveled on that day.
• Click the red Places option in the bottom-left to see every business, attraction, and place of interest you've visited.
• Click the More Trips box to check out the vacations and get-aways you've been on.

You can also double-click a red dot on the map to check out the exact day you traveled to that spot.

If you clicked something and want to reset the map, click Timeline in the top-left to return to your main Timeline page.

Want to know how to view Location History in Google Maps? After all, Google knows everywhere you go, so why shouldn't you be able to access that information too?

Location History is a feature in your Google account that saves details of all the places you visit and the routes you take there. It works on any mobile device on which you're signed into your Google account and have Location History turned on.

The data collected by Location History is available to view in Google Maps, in both the Maps website in your desktop browser and in the Maps app for Android or iOS.

When you view your Location History, you're likely to be alarmed by the amount of information Google has stored about the places you've been. Even if you've turned off the feature it still hangs onto the data from your past travels, until you tell Google to delete it.

Here we'll explain the best ways to explore your Location History, delete activity data that you don't want Google to store and prevent it from tracking you in future.

How to view Location History in Google Maps: In your desktop browser 

1. Go to the Google Maps website in your browser and click the three-line Menu button in the top-left corner. If you don’t see this button, click the arrow to expand the side panel. 

When the menu opens, choose “Your timeline.”

2. Google Maps will now display a map showing all the places you’ve been , while Location History was enabled on your phone. There are two ways to browse this information.

3. First, you can explore your Location History using the Timeline feature in the top-left corner. 

Click the drop-down menus to choose a year and month, or a specific day , to see the places you visited during that time period on the main map. 

Alternatively, hover your mouse over the Timeline and click the left and right arrows to move back and forth through time, and select a time period that way. The map will adjust accordingly. 

4. The second method is to view your Location History by place. Click the rectangular red box in the bottom-left corner that shows how many places you’ve visited. 

This will open a horizontal panel listing all those locations, which you can filter to show only your “Most visited.” Use the slider along the bottom to explore the places you’ve been.

5. When you hover your mouse over a place, a pin will appear on the map to mark its location. Click the place and choose "Last visit in timeline" to see the date you were last there, and even how you got there from your saved Home address.

Choose "Place details" to view more information about that location, such as its address, contact details and website, and directions for how to get there.

6. To stop — or "pause" — Google Maps storing details of everywhere you can go, click the Manage Location History button . When the Activity Controls page opens, move the Location History slider to Off .

7. You can make Google delete your Location History automatically after a set period of time. Click “Auto-delete” on the Activity Controls page and choose to automatically delete location data after three,18 or 36 months . 

8. Alternatively, you can delete your entire Location History now. Click the trash can icon in the bottom-right corner of the main map . 

When the “Permanently delete all location history” message appears, check the box “I understand and want to delete all Location History,” then click Delete Location History.

How to view Location History in Google Maps: In the mobile app 

1. Open the Google Maps app on your Android or iOS device. Tap your profile picture or letter in the top-right corner and choose Your Timeline . This will show you a list of all your visited places.

2. The Google Maps app provides a lot more options for viewing your Location History than the website. 

As well as exploring places by day, you can tap Trips to see details of your travels , including the venues you visited and how far you travelled there. 

3. You can also tap Places to view places grouped into categories, such as Shopping, Hotels, Food and drink, Attractions and Airports. 

Select Cities to see when you last visited a particular town or city, and how many places you visited while there. Or tap World to see how many towns and cities you’ve been to in a particular country.

4. Tap your profile picture again and choose “Your data in Maps.” Here you can turn Location History off and on , and view and delete details of your activities by choosing “See and delete activity.”  

5. Google Maps lets you save your Location History before deleting it. Tap “Download your Maps data” to open Google Takeout. 

Select the data you want to download , then tap Next and choose how you want it to be delivered: via email or added to Google Drive or another storage service.

Tap “Create export” and you’ll receive a zip file containing your Location History, to keep forever and explore at your leisure.

How to View and Manage Your Location History in Google Maps

While Google Maps helps you to look for new places and find the best routes, it also saves these things in your Location History. You can use the Timeline feature on Google Maps to track every place you have visited. However, you might want to remove some visits from your history.

Among all the neat tricks Google Maps has up its sleeve, Timeline has to be the most useful one. It can help you retrace your steps easily. Whether it’s the name of the gift shop you visited last month or photos you took along your last trip, Timeline can help you relive all those memories.

Let’s see how you can view, edit or delete your location history in Google Maps.

Google Maps app works pretty much the same on both Android and iOS. So, for this post, I am using an Android device.

How to View Location History on Google Maps

To view your travel history of any particular day, week or month, follow the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Open the Google Maps app on your phone and tap on your account circle in the top right corner. Then, select the Your Timeline option from the list.

Step 2: Swipe down on the bottom half of the screen to see detailed information about each trip, including place, distance covered, travel time, and mode of transportation. In case of incorrect or missing information, Google Maps also lets you edit or remove the trip from your timeline.

With the Timeline feature, you can also view your location history of any particular day by selecting a date from the calendar on top.

Additionally, It also keeps a list of all sorts of places, cities, and countries visited throughout your history.

How to Turn Off Location History on Google Maps

Although the Timeline feature can be handy in certain situations, the idea of Google tracking your location can be creepy for some. Thankfully, you can disable the timeline feature with a few easy steps.

Step 2: Now click on the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner and go to ‘Settings and privacy’. Swipe down to the Location settings, and tap on ‘Location History is on.’

Step 3: In the Activity controls window, toggle off the Location History button. Then, the app informs you about what will work and what won’t once it’s turned off. Finally, click on the Pause button to turn off the location history.

Note: Turning off the timeline feature doesn’t remove Google’s access to your location data as long as you use it for navigation and Google searches.

If you’re concerned about your map activity being saved, Google Maps also has an incognito mode just like the one on Google Chrome and YouTube.

How to Delete Location History on Google Maps

If you don’t intend to use your past location data, Google Maps also has an option to delete it. Here’s how to do it.

Step 2: Click on the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner and go to ‘Settings and privacy’.

Step 3: To delete the entire location history, tap on ‘Delete all Location History’. After that, select the checkbox that says ‘I understand and want to delete’ and press the Delete button.

Alternatively, you can choose to delete the location history of a specific time period by tapping on ‘Delete Location History range’ and entering the start and end date.

On top of that, you can also set up an auto-delete feature to delete history periodically by selecting ‘Automatically delete Location History’.

Bonus: How to Create a Heat Map with Google Location History

By combining your location history with third-party API and tools, you can create your own heat map of all the places visited during a trip. Here’s how.

Step 1: Go to Google Takeout to download your location data. Under ‘Select data to include’ click on Deselect all. Now scroll down and mark the checkbox that says Location History then click on Next step.

Step 2: Choose the Delivery method, File type & size, and Frequency, then click on Create export. Once the export is created, click on the download button, and a zipped file will be downloaded to your device.

Note: The download process can take a while depending on the size of your Google maps data.

Step 3: Now unzip the downloaded file and open the Location History folder within.

Step 4: Head over to the heat map feature on Location History Visualizer and upload the LocationHistory.json file.

And there you have it. Your own heat map made of your location data. You can navigate the heat map just like Google Maps and take screenshots of it.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

You can revisit old memories by checking out your location history and also helpful to pass on the same route to friends and others. It can be easy to forget sometimes, but Google keeps track of all places you've been through the Timeline feature and uploads them to the cloud so you can look at it from any device. It's meant to be a "convenient" feature, but it can get problematic, especially if other eyes that are not yours get access to that data. That's why Google is moving it away from the cloud and for your device's eyes only.

Google Maps is overhauling its location data storage practices, shifting from cloud-based backups to local storage on users' devices. The change, part of what might be an increased focus on privacy by, means you will no longer be able to access your Timeline history via the web after December 1st. It's a big tradeoff to take into account if you happen to be a frequent user of that feature, especially from the browser—I know I've checked info about past trips a few times from my browser. At the same time, the prospect of someone being able to access your Google account and see all the places you've been, including the roads you took, in pretty deep detail is probably pretty scary.

If you're not familiar with the feature, Timeline tracks users' routes and trips based on their phone's location data. Instead of linking this information to Google accounts, the data will now be tied to individual devices. So you will still be able to access the data, just not from your computer or from any device that you didn't take with you to your travels.

You have until December 1st to save your travel history to your mobile device. After that date, Google will attempt to transfer the most recent 90 days of data to the first device a user signs into Google on, deleting any older data. To continue using Timeline, users must adjust settings in the Google Maps app on their mobile devices. They can choose to retain location data indefinitely until manual deletion or opt for automatic deletion after three, 18, or 36 months. This is not the only move Google has taken to protect users and their privacy, as the company has taken measures such as removing sensitive locations from history and limiting authorities' access to location data, but this is certainly the most drastic.

You still have a few months to manually backup your location info if it's something you care about, but the clock is ticking.

How to See Your Google Maps Location History

It's no longer a secret that Google tracks you in the background. The Timeline feature capitalizes on this, giving you a way to check your location history.

The critical thing to note is you must have your Google account's Location History turned on to use the feature. With Location History enabled, you can view the countries, cities, and other places, like restaurants, malls, etc., that you've been to in the past.

Follow these steps to check whether you have your Location History enabled:

• Open Google Maps and tap your profile icon or letter in the top right.
• Select Your data in Maps from the pop-up menu.
• If you see On under Location History , that means you have it enabled. Otherwise, tap Off , and Google will take you to a page where you can switch it back on by tapping Turn on .

If you have just enabled your Location History at the moment, or you deleted your past data to protect your privacy in Google Maps , there won't be anything in your Timeline.

How to View Your Google Maps Timeline

Otherwise, with that out of the way, here's how you can see where you've been in the Google Maps app:

• Inside Google Maps, tap your profile icon or letter in the top right.
• Select Your Timeline from the pop-up menu. Google will take a few seconds to load the Timeline page.
• The Timeline page will show today's location history by default at the bottom. It provides additional data like how you went to a specific location, the amount of time used during the commute, and an estimate of your time in an area. Tap Today to select a particular date in the past.
• If you want to see your past trips, select the Trips tab at the top. Google will show you the number of trips you've been on, how long they were, and in which month and year.
• The Places tab showcases specific places you've gone to presented in different categories like Shopping, Hotels, Attractions, and more. You can also go to the Cities and World tabs to view the cities and countries you have traveled to in the past, respectively.

In the Day tab, nearby places you've visited in the past will be shown as dots of different colors on the map. Each color hints at the kind of activity done at the place.

The amount of data in your Google Maps Location History depends on how long the Location History feature has been enabled on your account. If you have set up your account to auto-delete your history, or if you chose to instantly delete your location data in Google Maps recently, the data will be much less.

Minube is a bit of a newcomer to the travel app game, but it has a lot of impressive features that make it one of the fastest-growing players. It acts as a travel planner and organizer, and you can even book hotels on the app. It also suggest more places to visit based on your location and interests. You can keep track of the places that you visit as well with photos that will be automatically tagged and added to your trip log, which you can also share as a guide for other travelers. The free mobile app can be downloaded on both iOS and Android devices.

5. Tripcast

If you are traveling in a group or participating in a volunteer project, Tripcast is one of the best trip logging apps to use. You can create shared photo albums, so that every member in your group can add the photos that they take on their phone and save them in one place. Everyone can view photos and share them with loved ones to keep in touch. The app will create a map for you based on photo geotagging, and you can see where you’ve traveled. Plus, you can use it on the web as well as on iOS and Android devices.

Perhaps the greatest feature with the trip logging app Momento is the power to connect all of your posts to a wide range of networks like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Spotify and even Medium. For those that don’t really care too much for writing but still want to capture their trip moments, Geospike is the app for you. The app, which you can download on  the Apple  store for free, allows user to log their trips with photos and an interactive map. It doesn’t have all the “bells and whistles” as some of the other travel apps, but its strengths are its impressive mapping features and simplicity. It has almost zero learning curve, so anyone can use it to log their trips. Plus, you can syndicate posts to Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr quickly.

Day One is another easy-to-use trip logging app. One of the biggest benefits for users is that it can serve as a way to journal daily life or around a specific event, activity or trip. You can check the weather and tag your location, as well as other posts to search for them in the future. All of your logs can be accessed later and saved or exported in a PDF file, and you can add an extra layer of security with your own passcode to unlock your log. But, it is only available on iOS devices and will cost you between $5 and $10 to download.

Maps New feature, Your Timeline Helps You Track Your Travel History

You can view your location history by diving into the My Account dashboard for your account. The difference now is that it will be available. In a more user-friendly manner right from the Maps menu on the desktop or Android. Mashing up your data even further. Photos users will also see any photos they took on a given day. At a given location inside the Your Timeline feature. If, for example, you visited Coney Island on July 2, as you perused your voyage around the area that day. You’ll see photos next to the entries for the places you took them, assuming you uploaded the images to drive.

Why this matters:  This is yet another example of what Google can do with your data resulting from the  company’s privacy policy changes in 2012. It’s commendable that it is making the data it collects about you readily available to you. And for those who love the idea of maintaining fine-grain journals of their day. This feature will be a perfect fit for taking trips down memory lane. Not everyone will be pleased with Your Timeline. However, Google is taking pains to claim that you control your data.

Your data, Your Way?

Hoping to fend off any privacy concerns, Google says Your Timeline is private and visible only to you. When you’re signed in to your account. You will only see Your Timeline if you enable location history storing with Android. Any Now user on mobile devices has this feature enabled unless they’ve manually disabled it. For more control, the company says you can delete a specific day, location. Or even your entire history whenever you want. Locations you frequent are named on the map. Such as a relative’s house or your favorite coffee hangout.

While all these features sound nice and privacy-protecting. Remember that any of your location data stored on Google’s servers is also available to law enforcement. Or other interested government parties that file the proper paperwork. That said, there’s no denying that Now is a beneficial service. Your Timeline may also be handier than you realized. If only to retrace your steps the day you lost your backpack. Google should have mentioned in its post whether the feature will come with sharing or embed options. While the more privacy-minded may not like that. Others may appreciate the ability to share a specific day or trip on their blog or website.

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.

Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.

Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.

My favorite app on this list is Flighty, a must-have for any frequent flier . The free version is fantastic, but I recommend splurging for the premium version, which gives you even more useful information and comes at a reasonable cost of $48 per year. The functionality it provides more than justifies the price.

The free version allows you to input all future flights plus past journeys you've taken within the last year. It provides updated information if any schedule changes occur to upcoming flights and allows you to track all the miles you’ve flown in one place.

The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.

Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.

There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.

This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.

Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.

This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Users can also create easily accessible guides filled with up-to-date information to help you plan your own trip.

Steller is another app that a friend recently introduced me to, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. It uses a combination of AI and user experiences to help you plan trips around the globe. From recommendations of things to see, like the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires or the Royal Palace of Naples, to full guidebooks created by users, you can get inspired, book experiences, and discover hidden gems within this app.

How Accurate is Google Timeline? We Put It To The Test.

Most of the major applications track your location to some extent. And while most try to keep this information private and often don’t explain why they need it, Google Maps is quite transparent about its use of your location.

In addition to providing directions and displaying your current location, Google Maps also allows you to create a Google Maps Timeline, which helps you view your travel history on a particular day, including any places you visited and the time spent at every location. This makes it easy to identify patterns, optimize your schedule, and improve your business operations.

What is Google Maps Timeline?

Google Maps Timeline is a feature of the Google Maps app that provides an estimated record of the places you may have visited and the routes you may have taken during a particular time based on your location.

When Timeline is enabled, Google Maps will periodically track your location and store the information on your Google account. This data can be accessed anytime, anywhere, through the Timeline page. You can review and edit your Timeline, delete your location history, and set up location-based reminders. Your Timeline is private, so only you can access it.

Plus, you can add notes and photos to track important details. It’s a handy tool if you keep forgetting where you’ve been or when you need to recall your past movements for both work and personal reasons.

How Google Maps Timeline Works?

Google Maps tracks your location through the Google account and displays the information on a map. 

Here is a deeper look at how this works:

Location Tracking: To start, ensure that location tracking is enabled on your device. This helps collect your data in the background, which creates the timeline.

Accessing and Creating the Timeline: To view your timeline, open Google Maps on your computer or mobile device and tap on the three-dotted lines in the upper left corner. The Timeline shows the places you’ve visited, including the date and time of each visit.

Timeline Editing and Sharing: It’s easy to edit your timeline by adding or removing places you’ve visited. You can even add notes and photos to every location. Of course, you can delete your entire Google Maps location history if you want. 

It’s also possible to share your timeline with others on your Timeline. Select the “Share” button and choose how you want to share it (either through email or social media). A link will be sent to their timeline.

Privacy Setting: When sharing information, it’s important to ensure that users are aware of and comfortable with the privacy and data security settings. On the Google Timeline feature, users can control their privacy settings, delete their location history, or turn off location tracking altogether. They can also share the location data with others or keep it private.

How Accurate and Reliable Is Google Maps Timeline?

Google Maps Timeline is considered a reliable tool for tracking your location history and providing information about your past activities. While this might be true, we discovered that the location accuracy and reliability vary depending on various factors.

First, Google’s Timeline depends on the location data available in your mobile device or other devices connected to your Google account. This means that the accuracy depends on factors such as the GPS signal from the GPS receiver, the presence of obstructions such as buildings and other structures that may interfere with the signal, and the availability of location data from different sources, including Wi-Fi networks and cell towers.

Second, Google Maps may fail to pick the correct mode of transportation used at a particular time. For example, it may mistake a car ride for a bus ride, thus leading to incorrect distance and speed measurements.

Finally, the settings on your device, such as the airplane or battery-saving modes, can affect the accuracy of Google Timeline.

We also discovered that Google Timeline doesn’t track your location once you log out of your Google Account on your iPhone or Android. Your location history is connected to your Google Account; you must be signed in to record accurate location reporting. When you’re logged out, location tracking is turned off, and your location history is no longer recorded.

Overall, Google Maps Timeline seems useful for tracking location history and providing detailed data about past activities. That said, its accuracy and reliability depend on the factors mentioned above, which means it may not be 100% accurate all the time.

How Often Does Google Timeline Update?

Google Timeline is updated automatically and continuously as long as the location services on your Apple or Android devices are enabled and granted Google permission to track your location. 

That said, we found out that the frequency of updates depends on several factors, including the user’s device strength of cellular or Wi-Fi signal, battery level, and the frequency of geolocation requests and notifications.

Google Timeline updates your location history every few minutes or every time there is a significant change in your location.

 You can manually edit your location history to correct any inaccuracies or remove any locations you don’t want to see.

You can also turn on, pause, or turn off location completely if you don’t want Google to track your movements.

Can Google Maps Timeline Track Mileage?

From our observation, we discovered that Google doesn’t have a dedicated Google Maps mileage tracker to help the maps user track mileage and see their tax deductions in the same place. That said, Google Maps Timeline can track the places you’ve visited, including the routes you have taken using the location history, which can be used to keep mileage logs.

You can discover how far you’ve traveled and how you traveled, whether it’s walking, driving, biking, or on public transport. 

To see your mileage information on Google Maps Timeline, follow these steps:

• Open the Google Maps app on your computer or mobile device (both iOS and Android)
• Tap on the three horizontal lines in the top left corner of your screen.
• Select “Your Timeline” from the menu.
• Scroll down to the day or date range that you want to view.
• A map will contain all the location history for that day or date range. To see the distance you traveled, tap on the “Total distance” option just below the map.

Google Timeline displays the distance traveled in miles or kilometers, depending on your settings. To see the distance between locations, tap on the individual sites on the map.

 It’s important to remember that your location needs to be extremely precise for Google Maps Timeline to calculate the distance you’ve traveled accurately.

Can I Use Google Timeline In Business for Employee Tracking?

Google Timeline is designed to help individuals keep track of their location history. These quirky institutions tell the stories behind everything from sewers to perfume, medicine to magic

From the Louvre to the Musée d’Orsay, there’s no question that Paris has some of the best museums in Europe. But not all of the city’s cultural institutions are world-famous.

Just under the radar fly many smaller Parisian museums that make space for the fantastic, the gritty and the unexpected. At the Museum of the History of Medicine, the gallery is filled with nightmarish surgical equipment, while fragrances rare and beautiful bloom at the Museum of Perfume. At the Museum of Magic, the secrets of magicians and spiritualists are kept under lock and key, while inside the Museum of Fairground Arts, a historic warehouse full of vintage carnival rides and games, “visitors are transported to a magical otherworld where they can learn while rediscovering their childlike spirit,” says its general manager, Clémentine Favand.

From tunneling into the subterranean sewer system to shining light on the discovery of radiation, these eight weird and wonderful Parisian museums are well worth a visit during the 2024 Summer Olympics and beyond.

Museum of the History of Medicine

The Museum of the History of Medicine isn’t meant to be gruesome, but it just can’t help itself. “The collections exhibited are concentrated on surgical instruments and other medical apparatuses, especially those from the 16th to the 19th century,” says Andréa Barbe-Hulmann, the museum’s curator. It was in those long dark days before anesthesia that doctors and surgeons relied on tools that, while innovative for the time, look today more like torture devices than medical aids: hand saws, crude mechanical respirators, guillotine-like amputation devices and limb-replacing metal prostheses. Among the collection’s most prized artifacts, says Barbe-Hulmann, are “the scalpel used for King Louis XIV’s fistula operation in 1686, and the wooden anatomical dummy ordered by General Napoleon Bonaparte in Italy in 1796.” Each is laid out in glass cases lining the long, cavernous hall on the second floor of Paris Cité University—a hall of horrors that were once at the cutting edge of health care.

Museum of Perfume

Though it’s not often considered as essential as sight or sound, scent has a profound effect on memory, mood and experience. The Museum of Perfume , presented by Paris’ Fragonard perfumery, is dedicated to exploring the methodology and history behind perfume making—an art used as much to enchant as to mask objectionable odors (especially in the days when baths were few and far between). The olfactory journey spans five continents with scents both recognizable and obscure, like the musk secreted by the glands of the nocturnal civet . At its end, visitors are welcomed into the perfumer workshop, where they can craft their own signature scent with the same techniques and fragrances used by the pros.

Museum of Fairground Arts

The Museum of Fairground Arts is more like a 19th-century carnival than a museum. Almost everything, from the curiosity cabinets to the carousels, demands interaction. “The museum is brought to life by our visitors,” says Favand. “Objects can be touched, and there’s the possibility to play with centenarian fairground attractions or ride old merry-go-rounds operated by the guide.” Some of the artifacts housed in the historic Bercy wine warehouses are extremely rare. It took more than 20,000 hours of work to restore one of the last remaining draisiennes, an early bicycle used by the elite. A velocipede carousel from 1897 was one of the first to be operated by both steam and electricity, and it would have been most fairgoers’ introduction to the carousel. As immersive as it is whimsical, “most visitors tell us the Museum of Fairground Arts is the best museum they have seen in Paris,” says Favand.

Sewer Museum

A museum dedicated to the Parisian sewer system may seem like an unusual choice, but there’s more to this subterranean city beneath a city than meets the eye. Visitors have been flocking here since guided tours of the modern waste system began at the 1867 Paris World’s Fair, riding through its tunnels in boats or dredger wagons pushed by sewer workers. Both modes of transportation were discontinued when the Sewer Museum was officially founded in 1975, and they were replaced by walking tours that travel more than a third of a mile through underground flush tanks, spillways, and passages strung with water pipes and cables. Exhibitions housed in now-defunct tunnels focus on the evolution of Parisian sanitation over the years, the essential workers who keep the system running day after day, and the network’s modern automation. Just be forewarned: Although visitors never have to come face to face with raw sewage, there’s no escaping the stench of the Sewer Museum.

Museum of Magic

Travel through a thousand years of sleight of hand at the Museum of Magic . There’s no otherworldly wizardry here. Instead, the collections at this museum open a window into the secrets of magicians through the centuries, including Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin , who opened France’s first performance hall dedicated to the magical arts in 1845. Among the artifacts on display in what were once cellars beneath the home of the Marquis de Sade are a richly decorated “sawed-off woman” trunk from 1923, trick boxes that held everything from fire to silk, and the slates and levitation tricks of spiritualists who claimed to speak with the dead. Colorful posters and engravings dating back to the 1600s offer a look at the image of the magician throughout history. Don’t miss the automaton gallery by the museum ticket office before you go. It’s the home of more than 100 vintage push-button toys that, while not exactly magical, are powered by what was once considered an astonishing new electromechanical technology.

Curie Museum

It was on the site of the Curie Museum that the field of radioactivity was revolutionized. In its original laboratory, physicist and chemist Marie Curie spent 20 years at work at the height of her career. The year she died, her daughter and son-in-law, Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie , discovered artificial radioactivity in the same lab—a breakthrough that earned them the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1935. Those are just a few of the things that make the Curie Museum special, says cultural action and communications manager Nathalie Huchette. Today, the lab, preserved with some of its original equipment and archives, and its adjacent galleries tell the story of the Curie family’s impact on science, the radium craze that followed its 1898 discovery and the history of radioactivity in cancer treatment. Perhaps more importantly, the Curie Museum is one of only a handful of science museums around the world in which women play a starring role—and that’s struck a chord. Of the more than 36,000 people who visited in 2023, the majority were women between the ages of 18 and 34. The museum “is an important step for the visibility and recognition of women in the history of science,” says Huchette.

Police Prefecture Museum

The current exhibition at the Police Prefecture Museum couldn’t be timelier. The show, dedicated to the evolution of competitive sports and the role of the city’s peacekeepers in maintaining safety for both athletes and spectators, channels the Olympic fever that burns in Paris this summer. It joins the small museum’s permanent collections, a fascinating mix of equipment, ephemera and evidence inside the police headquarters of the Fifth and Sixths Arrondissements. The museum’s newest acquisition, a series of screen prints made by contemporary artist Alix Delmas from archival criminal photographs, delves into the anthropometric quest to identify repeat offenders by their physical measurements. It’s a colorful addition to perennial eye-openers like an authentic guillotine and German machine guns from World War II.

Smoking Museum

Millenia before tobacco and cannabis became commercial products, inhaling them and other potent plants was a spiritual act, one that allowed smokers to experience the divine. Tobacco use has fallen out of favor in recent generations, but, according to the Smoking Museum , examining its history and artifacts reveals a lot about how behavior, society and religion have shifted over time. In the museum’s permanent collection, a hemp resin-extracting sieve, ornate Chinese opium pipes, kitschy smoking paraphernalia and live plants are crammed into every corner. Works of art—everything from ancient Maya drawings to original engravings to portraits of smoking celebrities—line the walls. The Smoking Museum is a reminder that in the story of humankind, smoking is a nearly universal practice.

LINTHICUM, Md.— The summer travel period has arrived in full force and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for the highest passenger volumes that the agency has ever seen at airport security checkpoints nationwide during this summer’s travel season, which began Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day. In fact, during the course of the past five weeks, TSA has seen several days make it into the top 10 busiest days in TSA’s 22-year history—including the top three days ever.

TSA officials at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) also expect it to be extremely busy and the agency has been working in close coordination with airport, airline and travel partners to ensure that we are ready for this summer’s increased travel volumes.

On a typical day, TSA screens 27,000 people at the airport checkpoints, but since mid-May, TSA officers at BWI have been screening closer to 33,000 people per day. The busiest times of the day at BWI checkpoints are from 4 to 8 a.m. and from 3 to 7 p.m. Those are the peak hours when the most people are all looking to get through checkpoints to get to their gates around the same time.

“My advice to travelers is to get to the airport early because it will be crowded here and at other airports across the country,” said Christopher Murgia, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Maryland. “By early, I encourage you to arrive at least two hours in advance of your departure time. It will take you longer to find an available parking spot and you can expect to see a line at your airline check-in counter. And that’s before you head to the checkpoint.” 

TSA’s second piece of advice is to “know before you go.” By that “I mean to know the contents of your carry-on bag,” Murgia says. “It’s best to begin packing for travel with an empty bag, because that way travelers are less likely to see their carry-on bag trigger an alarm. If you start with an empty bag, you know with certainty that you do not have anything prohibited inside.”

TSA has multiple ways to find out where an item should be packed. You can download the free myTSA app, which has a handy “What can I bring?” feature that allows you to type in the item to find out if it can fly. Or ask on Twitter or Facebook Messenger at @AskTSA. Travelers may also send a question by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872).

“If you have not traveled recently, we want you to be aware of new checkpoint technology units that we have installed here in time for the busy summer travel period,” Murgia added.

TSA has installed automated screening lanes (ASLs) with computed tomography (CT) scanners at the airport checkpoints to enhance security efficiency and decrease the amount of time travelers spend in the security screening process. Installation of the lanes began in late spring.   

“We are always looking to incorporate innovative technology throughout the terminal to improve the passenger experience while improving upon our security posture,” Murgia said. “The new screening lanes offer enhanced security as well as an expedited screening experience.”

The CT scanners provide a clear 3-D image of the contents of a traveler’s carry-on bag. Using a touch-screen monitor, TSA officers can rotate the image to get a more complete view of what is inside each bag. In doing so, TSA officers are able to better identify items inside a bag, which results in fewer bags needing to be pulled aside and opened. The 3-D images also enable TSA to better and more quickly identify any threat items that might be contained in carry-on bags.

The ASLs include several new features designed to improve the screening process for travelers going through the security checkpoint including:

• Four divesting countertops per lane designed specifically to enable up to four passengers to place their items in bins simultaneously;
• Automated and powered conveyor rollers that move bins into the X-ray machine tunnel and then feed the bins back to the front of the security checkpoint;
• Automatic diversion of any carry-on bag that may contain a prohibited item to a secure conveyor belt, which allows other bins containing other travelers’ belongings to continue through the screening process uninterrupted;
• Bins that are 25 percent larger than a typical bin and are able to hold a carry-on suitcase;
• Unique Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags on each bin, which provides additional accountability of a traveler’s carry-on property as they move throughout the security screening process;
• Cameras that capture digital images of the contents of each bin and are linked side-by-side to the X-ray image of a carry-on bag’s contents to easily match a bag to its X-ray image.

TSA continues to expand the number of automated screening lanes in use at airports across the country. To date, TSA has overseen installation of 205 automated screening lanes in security checkpoints at airports nationwide.

TSA also reminds travelers that starting on May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or driver’s license to fly within the U.S., make sure you have a REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID. If you are not sure if you have a REAL ID, check with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. For questions on acceptable IDs, visit TSA’s web site. “Put REAL ID on your summer to do list,” Johnson recommended.

Travelers can contact TSA with questions may contact TSA by sending a text directly to 275-872 (“AskTSA”) on any mobile device or over social media by sending a message to @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger. An automated virtual assistant is available 24/7 to answer commonly asked questions, and AskTSA staff are available 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET for more complicated questions. Travelers may also reach the TSA Contact Center at 866-289-9673. An automated service is available 24/7.

Passengers who need additional assistance through security screening may request a TSA Passenger Support Specialist (PSS). A PSS is a TSA officer who has received specialized training, including how to effectively assist and communicate with individuals with disabilities, medical conditions or those who need additional screening assistance. Individuals should request passenger assistance at least 72 hours in advance by contacting our TSA Cares passenger support line at (855) 787-2227. Live assistance is available weekdays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET, or weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.

The Jagannatha Rath Yatra festival began with estimates ranging from the 12th to 16th centuries. Stories and myths surround its origins. Some say it represents Lord Krishna’s visit to his mother’s birthplace. Others believe it started with King Indradyumna, who supposedly set up the rituals.

Historical documents show the festival became more important during the rule of Odisha ’s Gajapati kings. Over the centuries, the Jagannath Rath Yatra has changed and grown, but its core purpose has remained the same. It’s a powerful symbol of Odisha’s rich culture and the deep faith of millions.

At the heart of the Jagannatha Rath Yatra lies the symbolic journey of three deities: Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and their sister Subhadra. These deities are believed to emerge from the confines of the Jagannath Temple in Puri and embark on a nine-day sojourn to the Gundicha Temple, about 3 kilometres away.

Jagannatha Rath Yatra 2024: Rituals

The Jagannatha Rath Yatra unfolds in captivating rituals, each steeped in symbolism and tradition. A day before the grand procession, the deities undergo a ceremonial bath (Rath Snana) involving 108 pots of aromatic water and sacred items, signifying their purification before the journey. This is followed by the Rath Pratistha (Consecration of the Chariots), where priests chant mantras and bless the newly built chariots, transforming them into vessels for the divine journey. The pinnacle of the Yatra arrives with the Rath Yatra (Chariot Procession). Thousands of devotees throng the streets, chanting hymns and brimming with fervour as they pull the majestic chariots towards the Gundicha Temple. Here, the deities reside for nine days, allowing devotees to seek their blessings. After this sojourn, the Bahuda Yatra (Return Journey) sees the deities return to the Jagannath Temple in a similar procession filled with joyous celebration. The Yatra culminates with Niladri Vijaya, the dismantling of the chariots, symbolising the conclusion of the divine journey and the promise of its renewal in the year to come.

For example, location data may be saved as part of activity on Search and Google Maps when your Web & App Activity setting is on, and included in your photos, depending on your camera app settings.

Find your travels

You can find how far you've travelled and the way that you travelled, such as walking, biking, driving or on public transport. Whether Timeline measures distances in miles or kilometres is based on your country or region.

• On your computer, open Google Maps .
• Sign in with the same Google Account that you use on your mobile device.

• To find another date, at the top, choose a day, month and year.

Find your home and work on Timeline

If you've saved your home and work addresses, they show up on Timeline. In addition to Timeline, this information may also be used in other Google products and services.

Edit Timeline

If a place is wrong on Timeline, you can edit the location and when you were there. 

• On your computer, go to Timeline .

• Choose the correct place or search for a place in the search box.
• To edit when you were there, click the time.
• Click the day that you want to delete.
