Milos and Santorini, both nestled in the Aegean Sea, are no exceptions. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself on Milos and plan to venture to Santorini, you’re probably wondering how to travel between these two dream destinations. To help you find the best route, here’s my quick guide on how to get from Milos to Santorini .

Santorini Essentials

Before traveling from Milos to Santorini, there are a few things you need to know to guarantee a seamless trip.

• Santorini is the most famous island in the Greek Cyclades. Make sure to book accommodation at least 3-4 months in advance. See my top picks below or search for the best hotel deals on  Agoda  or  Booking.com . 
• Many blogs recommend renting a scooter or ATV in Santorini. While this is certainly an option, I highly recommend renting a car instead. There are some serious hills in Santorini! Best Ways to Get from Milos to Santorini

Getting from Milos to Santorini is pretty straightforward. That said, it does require some planning to ensure a smooth transition between these two dreamy islands. Essentially, there are only two ways to travel between them: by ferry or plane. Both have their pros and cons. To help you determine which route is best for you, here’s what you need to know about each transport option. 

Milos to Santorini by Ferry

The  easiest way to travel between Milos and Santorini is by ferry . The distance between the ports of Milos and Santorini is roughly 150km. The ferry crossing between these two islands takes anywhere from 2 to 5 hours.

The  departing ferry port in Milos is Adamantas , in the harbor town of  Adamas . The port is roughly a 12-minute drive from Plaka, the capital of Milos, and less than 20 minutes from the charming seaside village of Pollonia. 

While there are two ports in Santorini, Athinios and the Old Port, the  main port for passenger ferries is Athinios  (also known as New Port, Thira Port, or the Port of Santorini). Athinios Port is located on the island’s southwestern coast. It’s about a 16-minute drive from Fira, 35 minutes from Oia, and 20 minutes from Kamari. 

Which Ferry Operators to Use

Seajets  (high-speed vessel) and  Zante Ferries  (standard vessel) are the main ferry companies operating the Milos Santorini route. 

For the fastest crossing, you’ll want to book a high-speed ferry that will get you to Santorini in roughly 2 hours. The most popular operator is Seajets . They have  at least one daily crossing  between the two islands from  late March to early October  (weather permitting) and  up to 2-3 connections a day during the peak season (Jul-Aug) . Finding a ferry crossing during  winter  is still possible, but note these are usually limited to  two weekly crossings . 

The  Seajet ferry departs at   11:50 at Adamas Port  and  arrives at Santorini at 13:55 . A one-way ferry ticket costs  EUR 93.70 . As mentioned, more connections (up to three) are usually scheduled during the peak season. Therefore, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Ferryhopper  website.

If you’re on a tight budget (or have lots of time), another option is to sail with  Zante Ferries Dionisios Solomos . The ferry ticket only costs  EUR 18 . However, there are only a few weekly connections, and it’s a slow way to travel between Milos and Santorini. If none of the schedules above fit your travel itinerary or tickets are sold out, another option is to take a ferry with connections. The journey involves a stopover at one of the other islands, and you’ll need to transfer to another vessel. While it is an option, you should know tickets usually cost more than the direct ferry. 

Tips for Taking the Ferry

• If you’re visiting Santorini during peak season, know that tickets sometimes sell out. As a result, booking your ferry tickets  well in advance is best.
• Arrive at the port at least one hour before departure. And always remember to double-check departure and arrival locations to avoid any headaches.
• Ferries in Greece often get delayed due to bad weather conditions. If you’ve booked your ticket via Ferryhopper , you’ll be notified of any delays via SMS or email. But it’s a good idea to download the app to track the vessel. You can also check in via the app and access the boat with a QR Code. Online check-in is usually available from 72 hours before departure. 
• Each vessel has its own baggage allowance policy , but most ferries typically allow at least one large piece of luggage. Check your boats policy beforehand. You can keep small carry-on luggage with you, but large suitcases are stored in designated luggage areas on the ferry. 
• If you suffer from seasickness , take medication beforehand, as you’ll be on the water for quite some time.
• Most ferries have a snack bar where you can buy drinks and snacks. But you can also grab some snacks at Puerto  by Milos Port. (Definitely try the spanakopita — it’s so good!) 

Milos to Santorini by Plane

If the ferry is not for you, flying from Milos is another option to get to Santorini. Milos has a small airport (MLO) with regular  flights via Athens   International Airport  to Santorini International Airport (JTR). Several domestic airlines operate this route, like  Aegean Air ,  Sky Express , and  Olympic Air , with multiple daily flights during high season. 

Since there are  no direct flights between Milos and Santorini , traveling times may be much longer, which might not be ideal if you have limited time. The journey can take anywhere from 3-8 hours, depending on the season and the airline you choose to fly with. If you still prefer to fly, you can find flights and compare prices here on  Skyscanner .

Where to Stay in Santorini

Santorini has some of the most dreamy accommodation options in the world. That said, they come with a steep price tag! Finding affordable accommodation during the peak travel season can be tricky, too. If you plan on visiting Santorini between June and September, booking accommodation at least 3-5 months in advance is wise.

Best Time to Visit Santorini

The best time to visit Santorini is  from April to early November .

Peak season runs from July to August . While the weather is ideal, you should know the island is packed with tourists, and accommodation prices are steeper. If you still want good weather but fewer crowds and cheaper hotel prices, rather visit from late April to early June  or  September to early   October .  

While it is possible to visit Santorini during the off-season ( mid Nov to March ), it’s not the best time to plan your dream vacay. The weather is miserable and there are fewer ferry connections. Added to that, many tour activities, accommodation rentals, and restaurants shut down over this period.

Can I take my dog or cat with me?

Yes, you can take your dog or other pet on the ferry but it isn't possible to book a space in the kennel in advance. All Greek ships by law must have some kennel space.

If you are travelling on conventional ferry (not a fast ferry or catamaran) there is normally space available in the kennels and you should also be able to have your dog on all deck areas (but not inside) with you. Strictly speaking, this at the discretion of the ferry company but in general you should have no issues - though please take a muzzle with you just in case and keep your dog on a leash at all times. Small sized dogs and cats can travel in the ship as long as they stay inside a special travel box.

The other option, for absolute peace of mind, is to book a pet cabin. These are like normal cabins but have linoleum flooring. They are also available for day crossings at reasonable prices. This way you don't have to worry about finding space in the kennels and you and your dog or cat can relax. In July and August ferries can get very busy with people and other dogs.

Fast ferries and catamarans will also have kennels but these will be limited in number. In addition, the majority of fast ferries (though there are exceptions) don't have open deck space accessible throughout the journey, so you will not be able to stay out with your pet during your crossing. However, if your pet is small and inside a travel box you will be able to keep him or her inside.

You basically have 1 way to get from Santorini to Milos : by the fast ferry . To be honest, it’s a very straightforward route but extremely expensive in my opinion. In general, ferries in Greece have become extremely expensive in the last years and island hopping can become very expensive quickly. Santorini to Milos ferries take about 2 hours to reach Milos and this is usually a route that is part of the typical long ferry routes from Piraeus that go through many Cyclades islands (such as Folegandros, Naxos etc).

If you cannot find any available route from Santorini to Milos on Ferryhopper is because usually the ferry operators announce the available routes and timetables around 4-6 months in advance only every year, so you should better check closer to your dates.

• Santorini to Milos Ferries depart from Athinios port in Santorini.
• Between April and October  there can be more than  2 ferries a day  from Santorini to Milos; there are far fewer ferry options in the winter (November-March) 
• How long is the ferry ride from Santorini to Milos:  it takes around 2 hours and 10 minutes to get to Milos; the same obviously applies to the ferry from Milos to Santorini
• How much does it cost to take a ferry from Santorini to Milos:  it obviously changes every year but in general, it can cost around 93 euros (yes, it’s very expensive for a 2 hour ride and one of the most expensive routes in the Aegean sea)
• You must  book your ferry online  and you can then enter the ferry with the barcode that will be on the email that will be sent to you. This will be clearly written on the email you will receive from Ferryhopper and it is now the system that most ferry companies use BUT some smaller companies may ask you to get a printout from a kiosk that is outside of the ferry and it is this print out that will allow you to enter the ferry. As a rule of thumb, if your ticket you got through email from Ferryhopper has a barcode then you can enter the ferry directly.
• Strikes in Greece: strikes can happen anytime in Greece and for any means of public transportation (including the ferries) within short notice; usually, they may happen on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays; yes, they may mess up your trip but they are necessary for the hard-working people of Greece so that they can have decent salaries and benefits for their lives. So, get over it and try to find some alternatives for your trip.
• Strong Winds – Ferries Cancellations: in case there are strong winds (which can be pretty common in August in Greece), then the Greek Port Authorities may stop all ferries from departing, so bear in mind this is also a possibility that can mess up your trip; as an average, there might be 4-5 days during the summer months that this can happen so it’s good to have that in mind
• Business Seats on Ferries in Greece: in my opinion, they are not worth the extra money as you only get a bit more space and a slightly quiet area to sit but even the standard seats are very spacious
• The Ferry Schedule for all greek islands is announced only 4-6 months before the actual trips, so if you cannot find any scheduled ferries for your trip 3 years from now, please check again 3 months before your actual trip. Ferry tickets to greek islands never sell out and you will always find a ticket.

Santorini to Milos Ferry Schedule

The Ferry Schedule from Santorini to Milos is only announced a few months before the actual dates of the trips, which means that the times for the busy summer months of May, June, July, August and September are only announced around January or February of the same year.

However, there are not that many changes usually as there are usually ferries that depart sometime in the morning and go through several Cyclades islands.

The winter ferry schedule is less frequent with probably 1 ferry a day.

BLUE STAR FERRIES

Bluestar Ferries  are the biggest you can take to go to Ios from Santorini and are the most stable but also the slowest. There are no Blue Star ferries connecting Santorini and Milos.

No matter how bumpy or windy it is, you won’t feel much on Bluestar Ferries, but in case there are strong winds the Greek Port Authorities may not allow any ferries to depart, for safety reasons.

The best way to check for the available  Blue Star Ferry times schedule is to visit the Ferryhopper website.

Where can you book Blue Star ferry tickets from Santorini to Milos?

I highly recommend you book your ferry tickets online through Ferryhopper before you even land in Greece. It is the easiest and safest way to guarantee you are going to get a seat. In fact, for July, August and September, I recommend you book the ferry tickets online at least 1 month in advance. To be honest, you will always find a seat on a ferry but if you are planning to get your vehicle on the ferry then you need to book very well in advance as there are limited spaces for cars and motorbikes in their garages.

BE CAREFUL THOUGH:

As long as the email you receive from Ferryhopper has a barcode on it, you will be fine to enter the ferry with these ones. It will be very clear on the email you will receive from them, though. Otherwise, you will get instructions on how to get the printout ticket as some smaller ferry companies don’t have a barcode system on their tickets (very old-fashioned indeed…). This is not a problem however and all you have to do is to go to a kiosk outside of the ferry itself and people there will print out the ticket for you. Ferryhopper will give you instructions on where to go exactly.

SEAJET FERRIES

SEAJET Ferries  are the fastest you can take to go from Santorini to mILos and are the less stable and also the most expensive.

I highly recommend you book your ferry tickets online through Ferryhopper .

FLIGHTS TO IOS

Milos does have an airport but it only operates flights to and from Athens.

You basically have only 1 option for the Santorini to Milos ferries: the fast ferry SEAJET. My honest recommendation is to take the slow ferry instead of the fast one because it’s much cheaper and it’s not worth it in my opinion.

For me, the best way to check timetables and even book your ferry tickets online has been  Ferryhopper for the last few years, and I highly recommend it to everyone looking to get a ferry to Santorini to Ios.

Here’s your ultimate guide to Santorini, the Cycladic showstopper that sets hearts aflutter.

Lovers and honeymooners gravitate to Santorini to meander amid cliffside cave houses that hover almost imperceptibly above a lustrous, inky Aegean Sea.

A catastrophic volcanic eruption some 3,600 years ago, which saw half the island swallowed by the sea, is responsible for the dizzying visuals. Famed for its sunsets, photogenic blue-domed whitewashed churches, and intensely mineral white wine, Greek tourism’s poster child has long epitomized romance. It’s no wonder Travel + Leisure readers have repeatedly voted the Cycladic superstar among their favorite islands in the world as recently as 2023. It’s that kind of mind-blowing destination you must experience once in a lifetime.

And while Santorini seems more geared toward couples, you don’t have to be partnered up to enjoy a visit. Most travelers stay in accommodations in one of the caldera-facing villages in northwest Santorini, namely Oia, Fira, or Imerovigli. It’s no coincidence that eight Santorini hotels made it into the top 10 Greece-wide among 2023 T+L reader picks .

Christos Stergiou , a T+L A-List Advisor and the CEO and founder of True Trips, said accommodations on Santorini’s “off-caldera” side are worth considering if you’re looking to dodge the crowds. Cruise ship passengers, in particular, make up many visitors who visit in the peak summer months.

“There’s an advantage to staying on the caldera because you have the views. You exit your hotel, and you’re in the heart of everything,” he said. “In recent years, we’ve seen quite a few hotels opening up inland on Santorini, offering more of a private refuge.”

Stergiou makes a similar recommendation in terms of sightseeing. “Hire a car and follow a road to see where it takes you,” he told T+L. “Or book a private walking tour to explore villages beyond Oia.”

Meanwhile, the island’s food scene has also improved in recent years. High-quality restaurants helmed by prominent chefs have opened within the island’s best hotels, showcasing superior local produce ranging from white eggplant to yellow split pea (fava). Fish tavernas on the waterfront and inconspicuous dining spots in the interior enhance culinary offerings.

Add black sand beaches and historical and cultural attractions, including an enigmatic ancient settlement and wine tasting at small-scale estates.

Hike between inland villages

A classic trek runs across the rim of the caldera, from Fira to Oia, with pit stops in the villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli and at Skaros, the first castelli (fortress) built on the island. Alternatively, hike ancient trails through the authentic settlements of Pyrgos, Exo Gonia and Mesa Gonia. Santorini Walking Tours offers small group and private guided options. 

Take a boat tour of the caldera

No Santorini visit is complete without witnessing the caldera from the sea. Step aboard a catamaran for a private or small group day or sunset cruise . You’ll have the opportunity to swim and snorkel, take a dip in hot (lukewarm, actually) springs off the volcanic islets of Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni and view a 19th-century lighthouse. 

Explore ancient Akrotiri

Akrotiri is one of Europe’s most significant ancient settlements. Santorini’s fiery eruption preserved it in Pompeii fashion but, strangely enough, no human remains have been found. Take a tour with a state-licensed guide to learn what life was like in this advanced Mediterranean Bronze Age city. Key excavation finds are on display at the Museum of Prehistoric Thira in Fira.

Assyrtiko, Santorini’s best-known wine, might make up about 90 per cent of production, however, the island lays claim to around 50 indigenous grapes. Santorini features some pretty cool beaches. Among them is Perivolos, known for its black sand and invigorating, deep blue waters. Located in the southeast, here you’ll find water sports like jet skiing, along with buzzy beach bars and casual restaurants. As the sun goes down, turn up the romance with a shoreline wander to admire the rocky peaks of Mesa Vouno rising up to the north.

With reverence and ingenuity, Botrini today helms the restaurant that brought reimagined island fare to the fore. Splurge on a tasting menu, featuring dishes like cured bonito with rock samphire, local cucumber katsouni and pistachio paired with wines selected by Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis. 

Varoulko Santorini, Grace Hotel

Chef Lefteris Lazarou, whose Piraeus restaurant carries a Michelin star, quietly demonstrates his expertise with fish at his Santorini outpost. Linger over a laidback a la carte lunch at Varoulko Santorini or book for dinner, where degustation menus feature refined monkfish soup and crispy sea bream with smoked eggplant mousse, among other highlights.

In Vourvoulos, away from the celebrated caldera, you’ll find Roza’s . Seasonality reigns supreme at this downhome dining spot owned and run by a Georgian cook and her Greek husband. Rice-stuffed vine leaves with smoked eel and lime foam count among the delectable offerings, while there are plenty of vegan options. 

Best Time to Visit

“Late September through early October is the best time to visit Santorini. Crowds are thinner, prices are better, the weather is generally fantastic and the sea is warm,” Stergiou said. The shoulder season from late April through May is also a good time to schedule a trip though keep in mind the Aegean is still too cold for swimming, at least for most people. June offers long, languid summer days, making it a popular month. July and August are the busiest and hottest months of the year. And while rainy days are rare in spring or fall, it can be chilly. Stergiou said winter wasn’t an ideal time to visit as it’s mostly cold and damp and that’s also when construction and renovations occur. 

How to Get There

The quickest way to reach Santorini is by plane. Flights from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Santorini operate daily and take about 50 minutes. For those who prefer to island hop, take a ferry from Piraeus. A fast catamaran takes around four hours and 40 minutes to reach the island, while conventional ferries require between six hours and seven hours and 45 minutes. Santorini features on many cruise line itineraries including those of Virgin Voyages, Silverstar, Seabourn and SeaDream Yacht Club, though peak season means significant crowds. Viking Cruises and Windstar Cruises operate Mediterranean itineraries that encompass Santorini in winter. 

Areas to Visit

Santorini’s best-known village draws the crowds to its cobblestoned alleyways lined with elegant art galleries, boutiques carrying Greek designer labels and the island’s iconic blue-domed churches. Stop in at literary treasure trove Atlantic Books and lose yourself in Oia ’s backstreets to peruse stately neoclassical mansions once home to sea captains. “Everyone knows Santorini for its sunsets but dawn is equally spectacular,” said Stergiou, who suggested rising early, while Oia is still people-free. 

Few visitors venture to the low-key inland medieval village of Pyrgos, situated in the southwest, which Stergiou described as “underrated”. By day, visit the chapel atop Profitis Ilias, the island’s highest point, from where you can take in views across the island. Stergiou said he particularly enjoyed walking amid the town’s whitewashed houses in the evening to soak up the atmosphere.

Megalochori

Megalochori , another of Stergiou’s favorites, is brimming with living folklore and tradition. Located in the island’s southwest, the village is characterized by labyrinthine alleyways and ornate bell towers. Immerse yourself in music, art and mythology at family-friendly cultural center Symposion , where youngsters can learn to craft a panpipe. Fun is also guaranteed if you take a cooking class at Petra Kouzina . “There are a few tavernas and they’re all good,” Stergiou added.

How to Get Around

By Rental Car: Book a rental car well in advance, particularly if visiting during summer. “As long as you feel comfortable driving, I always recommend car rental, so that you’re independent,” said Stergiou. “Venture off without choosing a specific destination. Go check out wine country, for example.” Google Maps is mostly reliable. 

By Taxi: Silver taxis operate on the island but numbers are limited. Wait times can be long and traffic can spike fares. Cab ranks operate at the airport, Athinios port and near Fira’s central square. They may cost more if booked in advance or via a hotel. Taxis are metered and prices vary. It costs around €17 to €22 to reach Fira from the airport and about €30 to €40 to reach locations further afield. 

By bus: Santorini has a fleet of 23 buses known as KTEL that connects all island villages. Fira is the main hub for all bus routes. One-way tickets start from €2 (daytime fare) and €3.10 (night-time fare), respectively.

Choosing which islands to visit for a Greek island-hopping itinerary can be quite a daunting (but exciting) challenge.

With more than 6,000 Greek islands to pick between, it’s not the easiest task for anyone who is even the slightest bit indecisive. If you look on Google for answers, it’s even more overwhelming. A quick search of ‘best islands to visit in Greece’, and you’ll still get a list of 20 or so islands each sounding so beautiful and also slightly similar. So it doesn’t end up being that helpful. You could end up with more than 10 potential islands that sound unmissable for your Greek island hopping trip.

So this is my itinerary for Athens , Santorini and Milos (plus a brief detour to Folegrandos). In this post, you’ll find everything you need to know for planning a Greek island-hopping itinerary, from how to arrange transport, the best routes, accommodation and of course, an overview of these destinations.

Planning your Greek Island Hopping route

When planning your Greek island hopping route, the first thing to consider is time. The longer you have, the more islands you can comfortably visit (obviously) – but also, you must consider that transport between islands isn’t as simple or cheap as you might have hoped. We were in Greece for 9 days, and chose to visit three destinations in this time. We started and finished in Athens, because it was the cheapest place to fly in and out of, by far.

Then, I had some long lived dream of visiting the whitewashed town of Oia in Santorini so popped this beautiful island on my list. Finally, I wanted the third Greek island to be somewhere a little lesser known and less touristy . Fortunately, there are plenty of islands falling into this category. I chose Milos , which receives a moderate number of visitors.

Greek Islands: How to Choose

The first step should be to look at a map of Greece to get an idea of the groups of islands geographically. You’ll spot there are several groups, these include:

The Ionian Islands: Located NW of the mainland peninsula of Greece, these include Corfu, Paxos, Zakynthos and Kefalonia. These have somewhat moderate termperatures even in Spring and Autumn, making them great for outdoorsy visits in the shoulder months.

The Dodacanese Islands: Located near Turkey, these islands have a different feel to the rest of Greece. The better known islands here are Rhodes and Kos, both of which are close enough to Bodrum in Turkey which makes for a great day trip.

Crete: This island is the largest in Greek by far. Although it can be included on a Greek island hopping itinerary, there’s plenty to do on this huge island for a whole week or longer.

The Cyclades Islands : This group of centrally located islands are the most easily connected and make for a great island-hopping itinerary. Santorini and Milos are easily connected, and for this reason, a combination of Cycladic islands can make for a great Greek-island hopping itinerary. These islands include Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Milos, Folegrandos, Sifnos and Ios.

Athens does make a good natural starting point for any island-hopping route, especially as international flights can often be cheapest here. It can also be a good finish point to round off a trip too. Unless you choose to finish the route on an island with a large enough airport to fly back to your international destination.

Now you’ve got a feel for the island groups in Greece, it’s good to consider routes on the ferries and by plane.

Between the islands, flights can be somewhat irregular (or non-existent). Nearly all islands are connected to Athens but there isn’t a very comprehensive network between islands. Therefore, ferries can be better – but even these run between fairly fixed routes.

So for choosing your islands, I would pick one island that really jumps out to you as essential, and work your itinerary around its location. For me, this was Santorini.

Things to know about transport in Greece

Unfortunately, unlike places such as South East Asia, you can’t just decide on the day that you want to move islands. Most ferry routes (especially in the summer months) get booked up way in advance, the same way seats on planes do. Prices can also rise. Therefore, you are very likely to have to pick your days and dates in advance. This can make a very spontaneous Greek island hopping trip quite difficult.

I would not leave any ferry travel to your final island/destination. Ferries can be disrupted easily in Greece. All of our journeys were delayed or cancelled. Flights are more reliable. Ferries are more easily delayed or cancelled in high winds (a real issue in Greece), than flights.

Although ferry hopping (or flying) can sound a bit more hassle, it’s definitely worth doing over a Greek island hopping cruise. Firstly, you can spend longer than a day in a port, but also you’ll be able to beat the crowds from cruises and be able to sample more local food.

Ferry passes are not a thing, and each journey needs to be booked separately.

Ferry tickets in Greece aren’t too expensive, but they’re not as cheap as you might have hoped. If you’re visiting Greece on a budget, I wouldn’t pick too many islands purely for this reason.

The best sites to book through are Direct Ferries , which can compare prices for various companies. Alternatively, you can book direct through Blue Star Ferries and Seajets , which are two of the main ferry companies linking these islands.

Accommodation in Greece

As with most European destinations in the summer months, the Greek Islands get busy and accommodation will get booked up way in advance. Especially on places like Santorini or Mykonos. If you leave it to the last minute, it’ll either be terribly expensive, or terrible quality. It’s best to book as early as you can, so you can stay in the best place for your budget.

Airbnb is always another option, but leaving this to the last minute can leave you to some very basic accommodation.

My Cyclades Itinerary: Athens, Santorini and Milos

So this is how I ended up picking these as my main stops for my Greek island hopping trip. I would say this combination of Cycladic islands is the best for first-time island hoppers.

The capital of Greece is an ideal place to start a Greek-Island hopping trip. Athens has it all. From some of the world’s most iconic historical landmarks and museums, to a lively bar scene and funky street art. We chose to spend just a day here as visiting in the height of summer can be hard work, with both large crowds and high temperatures.

Some of the very best things to do in Athens include:

• Explore the Acropolis
• Visit the Panathenaic Stadium
• Stroll in the colourful quarter of Anatofika
• Stop for breakfast or lunch in pretty Plaka
• Enjoy some greenery at the National Gardens
• People watch in Syntagma Square
• Sample rooftop drinks at some of the cities coolest bars, such as Couleur Locale
• Take in a sunset over dinner with a view of the Acropolis

Beautiful Santorini is the picture-perfect Greek island of dreams. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, whitewashed villages and world-class sunsets, it’s an excellent island to visit. Connected to Athens by both air and by ferry, it’s an easy first island to get to.

Despite the hordes of tourists that descend on Oia, and the island’s capital, Thira every single day from the cruise ships, it’s still definitely worth visiting. Santorini is still one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

Top things to do on the island of Santorini include:

• Enjoying the scenic hike from Oia to Thira along the caldera ridge
• Visiting Oia Castle
• Swimming in Ammoudi Bay
• Catching an iconic Santorini sunset
• Drop by the unusual Red Beach

• Exploring the island by quad bike

Buy your ferry from Santorini to Milos through Direct Ferries here

Milos, another beautiful island in the Cyclades group, yet far lesser visited then Santorini and Mykonos, is the ideal second island to visit. Calmer, less expensive and a totally different feel, Milos is a special place.

To travel from Santorini to Milos, you need to take a ferry on either Blue Star Ferries or Seajets. There’s a brief stop in between at Folegrandos, but the overall journey time should be around 2-3 hours.

The main port is Adamas, which is also a great place to stay meaning you can skip transfer or taxi costs. This is unlike Santorini where taxis are rather expensive – its port is at the bottom of a steep zigzagging cliffside road.

Top things to do on the island of Milos include:

• Visit one of the island’s stunning beaches including Fyroplaka or Tsigrado
• Lunch in one of Pollonia’s excellent restaurants
• Spending long sunny days at Sarakinikio, exploring the moon-like rocks or jumping in the sea
• Dinner in the quaint fishing village of Mandrakia
• Sunset cocktails in Plaka
• Enjoy a day trip aboard a sailing boat with a local company
• Hire an ATV and go well off the beaten track

Folegrandos

Well, we went to Folegrandos by accident.

We only had an evening and a morning, but what a charming and untouched island. This is the ultra-local, lesser visited island in Greece you might have been dreaming of. Not only is it tiny, but it’s easy to get around and the locals are very welcoming. Between visiting its traditional Greek tavernas, visiting empty beaches and its charming villages, it’s a very pleasant island to include.

Mykonos: An Alternative

We didn’t choose to include Mykonos on our island-hopping itinerary as we were already going to Santorini, and that would be our touristy island. However, Mykonos can easily be included in this itinerary as the Cyclades’ ferries connect Mykonos with Santorini and Milos.

The island of Mykonos has a global reputation of being a party island, with glitzy bars and glamorous people from the around the world. It is definitely this, plus expensive. However, you can still visit the Mykonos Old Town, and explore its quaint whitewashed streets and charming cafes and tavernas.

So there you have my suggestions for a wonderful island-hopping round amongst the Greek Islands. A truly special corner of the world, offering a summer destination like no other. Charming whitewashed villages, unusual beaches and sublime food, island hopping in Greece is one of my favourite trips ever. Mykonos and Delos

Surely you have heard many things about Mykonos, that beautiful and exuberant island! Beautiful beaches, a typical Cycladic architecture -located in the center of the Aegean Sea -, many clubs, pubs and bars, where you can dance the night away. Also, some of the places of interest are the island's windmills, the old town and the Little Venice area, which is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods on this lively island. Also, just a few minutes away by boat, there is the historic island of Delos, which, according to Greek mythology, was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. This small island, inhabited since 3000 B.C., was one of the most important cultural and religious centers of antiquity. In 1990 Delos was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and, today, only 24 people, among them archaeologists, police officers and custodians of the archaeological museum, are allowed to remain on the island after sunset.

Santorini, the "Princess" of the Greek islands, is listed as one of the best tourist destinations in the world. If you are also a travel enthusiast, you should take the opportunity to visit this romantic island. You will enjoy unforgettable sunsets, beautiful landscapes and a mesmerizing view of the deep blue of the Aegean Sea. You should keep in mind that Santorini is made of volcanic rock from the Minoan Eruption (between 1639 and 1616 BC) and that is why the mounds of sand and pebbles are not only golden, but also black and red! The image of the city of Fira crowned by its white houses, perched on the cliffside and overlooking the volcano, makes it one of the most famous images of this amazing and picturesque island. In addition to the capital Fira, the most important places on the island are Oia, Acrotiri, Pyrgos and Megalochori.

There are so many things one can write and be enthusiastic about in Crete - its long and important history, idyllic villages and wonderful nature. In particular, Crete is the largest island in Greece and each place has its own tale to tell. Crete is also the island of contradictions. On one hand, visitors can find bustling but also pristine beaches; urban landscapes with modern clubs and on the other hand wild nature ... Here can also be found the oldest city in Europe, dating from 7000 B.C., Knossos. Today, the modern visitor can enjoy gorgeous beaches, traditional taverns, museums, galleries, and labyrinthine paths, the myth of the Labyrinth originated here, too! Finally, Cretan cuisine is something you must try at least once in your life.

This island, worldwide known for being the place where the statue of Aphrodite of Milos was discovered, is not only famous for its Minoan, Hellenistic or even Roman and Byzantine past; it is also renowned for being the island of lovers. Milos is a small Greek volcanic island, less touristy than other neighboring islands. Its beaches are very diverse in style, both rocky and sandy. The beaches are surrounded by beautiful hills, typical backdrop setting of the island. The archaeological remains, such as the catacombs and the ancient amphitheater. are really worth a visit.

It is the largest island in the Dodecanese island complex. Rhodes is known in Greek as the "Island of the Knights", due to the numerous monuments left by the Order of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, from the period it occupied the island. In 1988, the famous medieval city of Rhodes was proclaimed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The most famous creation was the Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Its construction lasted 12 years and was completed in 282 BC. Another important attraction on the island is the Butterfly Valley, a natural habitat that provides shelter to the rare Panaxia Quadripunctaria butterfly.
