It sounds ridiculous, and it is," Siegel says. "It's a great way to see Boston, though, especially for first-timers, and it's fun. Is it worth the money, and is it a trap? You decide, but it's probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience."</p>

3. Disney World (Orlando, Florida)

While some travel across the country to visit Disney World in Orlando, Florida, the theme park is often considered a tourist trap, and a very expensive one at that. But if you're firmly opposed to a Disney trip, you might want to reconsider.

"Plenty of people all over the world gripe and groan about how Disney is a tourist trap," Taylor Beal , Europe travel blogger  and content creator behind Traverse With Taylor, tells Best Life . "They say it's overrated, over-priced, and packed full with people—so much so that it makes it unenjoyable. But the reality is that Disney World really is one of the most magical places on Earth."

According to Beal, this Floridian attraction gives you the opportunity to escape into a world "where life is a celebration and most things are simple."

"Everywhere you turn, there are characters, parades, rides, delicious food, and a million other things to see," she shares. "For the best visit, consider a time during a festival like Epcot's Food and Wine Festival. You can avoid major crowds by staying away from holidays or weekends."

Three Billy Goats Gruff

  • Retold by S.E. Schlosser

Three Billy Goats Gruff

Snippity-snip, snap and swill, The tale begins upon a hill…

The air was crisp and cool. The sky was an endless blue. The green meadow grass swayed in a gentle breeze. And Big Billy Goat Gruff was bored.

“I am tired of eating in the same old field every day,” he told his brothers. “I want to eat in the meadow on the far side of the stream.

“Ohhh no, Big Billy Goat,” said little brother. “We cannot walk through the stream for it is too deep and too fast. We would be swept away!”

“And we cannot walk over the bridge,” said middle brother, “because there is a big troll under the bridge who will gobble us up if we try to cross it.”

“I am not afraid of the troll,” said Big Billy Goat Gruff, tossing his bold head with the huge round horns. He stamped the ground – once, twice, thrice – with his big hooves. “Let him try to eat me! We shall see who wins the fight!”

“But we won’t be there to see,” said Middle Billy Goat Gruff practically, “Because Little Billy Goat Gruff and I will have been eaten.”

“Not so!” cried Big Billy Goat Gruff, dancing around the meadow excitedly, his large hooves making holes in the mossy turf under his feet. “I have a plan!”

The three billy goats put their heads together and whispered for a long time. Finally they broke the huddle and all three of them trotted across the wide meadow to the narrow bridge that crossed the fast-flowing, deep stream in the ravine dividing their meadow and the one on the other side.

Taking a deep breath for courage, Little Billy Goat Gruff stepped onto the rough wooden bridge. Trip-trap, trip-trap. His little hooves made the bridge spring up and down a little as he moved carefully forward.

A pair of huge round eyes peered out from the darkness under the bridge. “Who’s that trip-trapping over my bridge?” rumbled the troll. A big hairy arm reached out from the darkness and huge fingers gripped the rail beside Little Billy Goat Gruff.

“It’s just me,” said Little Billy Goat Gruff in a very small voice. “I am the teeny-tiniest Billy Goat Gruff, all skin and bones, going over to the meadow to make myself fat.”

A second huge hand joined the first on the rail. “I am coming to eat you,” said the troll, his voice rumbling so deep that it shook the whole bridge.

“Eat me?” asked Little Billy Goat Gruff, shaking from head to toe, “I am too little. Not even worth a bite for a big troll like you. You should wait for my middle brother to come. He is much bigger than me.”

This made sense to the troll. Why go to all that bother for one small bite of Billy Goat when a bigger Billy Goat was on its way?

“Gerroff my bridge then,” the troll roared, slipping back down into the darkness underneath. “And don’t come back here until you are big and fat!”

“Yes sir,” said Little Billy Goat Gruff, trotting off the far side of the bridge in triumph and heading up into the wide-green meadow above. The plan was working!

When Little Billy Goat Gruff reached the top of the hill, Middle Billy Goat Gruff stepped onto the rough wooden bridge. Trap-rap, trap-rap. His medium-sized hooves made the boards of the bridge spring and sway under his weight as he moved forward.

A pair of huge round eyes peered out from the darkness under the bridge. “Who’s that trap-rapping over my bridge?” grumbled the troll loudly. Hairy arms reached out from the darkness and huge fingers gripped the rail beside Middle Billy Goat Gruff.

“It’s me,” said Middle Billy Goat Gruff in a very medium-sized voice. “I am the Middle Billy Goat Gruff, all skin and bones from the winter. I am going over to the meadow to make myself fat.”

Two blazing troll eyes over a long, twisted nose glared at him through the rails of the bridge. “I am coming to eat you,” said the troll, his voice rumbling so deep that it shook the whole bridge.

“Eat me?” asked Middle Billy Goat Gruff with a laugh. “Why do you want to eat me? I am all skinny from the winter. Barely two bites for a big troll like you. And my bones will get stuck in your throat and make it feel all scratchy and horrible. You should wait for my big brother to come. He is huge! Much bigger than me.”

This made good sense to the troll. Why go to all that bother for one bony, medium sized Billy Goat when a bigger Billy Goat was on its way?

“I’m off then,” said Middle Billy Goat Gruff, trotting to the far side of the bridge in triumph. He headed up to the wide-green meadow above and joined Little Billy Goat Gruff at the top of the hill. Then both of the brothers peered down at the bridge to see what Big Billy Goat Gruff was going to do.

As they watched, Big Billy Goat Gruff stepped onto the rough wooden bridge. Stomp-tromp, stomp-tromp. His huge hooves made the boards bend and give protesting creaks under his massive weight as he moved forward.

A pair of huge round eyes peered out from the darkness under the bridge. “Who’s that stomp-tromping over my bridge?” roared the troll. He sprang out onto the top of the bridge in a single leap. Big Billy Goat Gruff narrowed his eyes at the large, hairy troll. “It’s me,” he said, lowering his huge head so the curved horns were pointed at the troll. Then he charged.

Wham! Big Billy Goat Gruff slammed into the troll. “Arrrgh!” screamed the troll as it was lifted clean off its feet and thrown way, way, way up into the air. The troll landed head down on the bridge, making it shake and rattle from top to bottom. Big Billy Goat Gruff stomped and tromped on the troll with his huge hooves until the troll was smashed flat on the wood boards. Then he tossed him into the raging stream with his huge horns and the troll sailed down the ravine and out of sight, never to be seen again in those parts.

And Big Billy Goat Gruff went up the hill to join his brothers in the meadow. All summer long they ate the lovely green grass in both meadows until they all grew quite fat. And they walked back and forth over the troll-free bridge whenever they wanted.

Snippity-snip, snap and snout, This little tale has been told out!

We were having a sleepover at my house that Saturday night.  Me and my four best friends; Alex, Bianca, Sabrina, and Lacey.   We made cookies and watched movies and did our hair and makeup.  By midnight, we’d run out of planned activities.  It was time to improvise.        “Let’s try that Bloody Mary thing,” Lacey suggested.        Alex, who was sitting crossed-legged on her sleeping bag, said:  “What’s the Bloody Mary thing?”       Sabrina, who was lounging on top of her own sleeping bag on the far side of the room, said:  “Come on, Alex.  Everyone knows the Bloody Mary thing!  You stand in front of the bathroom mirror with a lighted candle and say the witch’s name three times.  Then her ghost appears, looking just the way she did when she died; all horrible and bloody with scars all over her face!”        “She sounds gorgeous.  Just why, exactly, do you think I would want to see the ghost of Bloody Mary?” Alex asked skeptically.       “Why not?” I said from my place on the pull-out couch in the living room.  “I’ve always wanted to see a ghost! It could be fun.  Besides, I’ve heard she can tell your future if you summon her correctly.”        “And if you don’t summon her correctly – or if she’s in a bad mood – the ghost of Bloody Mary will rip your eyes out and leave your face horribly scarred,” Lacey said dramatically.  “Or you will be found dead with claw marks all over your face and body.”         “Or you could be trapped in the mirror with Bloody Mary for eternity,” Sabrina added.        “Ooo, that sounds like fun!  Disfigurement, death or entrapment.  What a fabulous way to spend eternity,” Alex said sarcastically.  “Where do I sign up?”       “It’s a load of crap,” Bianca said as she tried to balance on one foot on the arm of the pull-out couch.  “It’s just a story told to scare little kids.  Bloody Mary isn’t real.”        “I’ve heard its real,” I said.  “My friend Katie tried it once and saw the ghost in the mirror.  Bloody Mary told Kate that when she grows up she is going to become a research doctor who cures cancer and saves lots of live and wins a Nobel Prize.”       “Hogwash,” said Bianca dismissively.        “There’s only one way to know for sure,” said Sabrina.  “Come on!  Let’s try it.”         I ran to the supply closet to get a candle and matches, and all of us, even Alex and the disbelieving Bianca crowded into our large downstairs bathroom.        “This is a bad idea,” Alex said nervously as we lit the candle.        “Not it’s not!  It’s the perfect thing to do at a sleepover,” I said.  “Like telling ghost stories.  Only this one might be true.  Here, you hold the candle.”  I thrust the flickering candle into Alex’s hand.          Once the candle was lit, Bianca turned all the bathroom lights.  As we stood before the bathroom mirror, I told everyone the story of Bloody Mary.        Bloody Mary was the name of an evil witch that live back in Colonial times.  The witch used her black arts to make her young again by killing a bunch of young girls in her village.  When the villagers discovered Bloody Mary was behind the murders, they burned her at the stake.  Bloody Mary used mirrors to help her locate and enchant her victims, and she cursed all mirrors when the villagers executed her, so that anyone chanting her name three times would be pulled into the mirror with her to spend eternity in the flames!        By the time I finished the eerie tale, all my friends were looking a little nervous.  But we were excited too.  Maybe we’d see a real ghost!  The candle in Alex’s hand flickered a moment and then steadied as the five of us chanted Bloody Mary’s name 3 times in front of the bathroom mirror.      I held my breath, not know what to expect, and wondered what Bloody Mary might say about my future.  Maybe I would marry Robbie when I graduated from college!  (Robbie was a cute boy that I liked in my science class.)       The five of us waited tensely as we gazed without blinking at our faces reflected in the glass.  The only sound was the ticking of the little wind-up clock my Mom kept in the bathroom.  I strained my eyes, trying to see through the mirror into some nether realm that I both dreaded and hoped might be there.          Finally, Bianca said:  “Nothing’s happening.  Let’s just get out of here.”      She reached for the doorknob and turned it.   The door wouldn’t open.       The door wasn’t locked when we started the ritual.  I knew this for a fact because I checked the door in case we needed to make a quick getaway.  After all, there was the possibility – however faint – that it might not be just a scary story told to frighten little kids.        I rushed to the door, pushed Bianca aside, and unlocked it.  But when I tried the knob, the door wouldn’t open.  Something… or did I mean someone?…was holding it shut.        Suddenly, Alex screamed and pointed at the mirror.  I whirled away from the locked door and saw a glowing white figure staring at us from the mirror.  Her face was twisted with malice and flames seemed to flicker around her.  In one hand she held a bloody knife!  It was Bloody Mary.          We all screamed and my friends backed away from the mirro r; all but Alex who stood frozen by the bathroom sink with the candle still clutched in her shaking hand.  All of a sudden, Bloody Mary lunged forward, her knife-hand coming straight out of the mirror and striking Alex fiercely in the face.  Long scratches appeared on Alex’s cheeks and she stagger backward with a gasp of pain; hands coming up to protect her face.   A wave of heat and anger poured out of the mirror in a blast that blew us head over heals.  My forehead struck the wall and I felt senseless to the floor.        I woke in darkness a few moments later and groped desperately for the light switch.  When I turned it on, I found Lacey unconscious beside me and Alex blacked-out beside the bathroom sink with deep scratches all over her arms and legs and face.        Sabrina was huddled sobbing behind the toilet.  I pulled her out, and gasped when I saw she was also covered in scratches.  She’d been standing too close to the mirror and the ghost had knifed her too.        I shook Lacey and Alex awake and the four of us clung together weeping and shaking with fear.  “I told you this was a bad idea,” Alex gasped.          My eyes widened suddenly when I realized there were only four of us crouching on the bathroom floor.        “Where’s Bianca?” I cried in alarm.  I leapt to my feet and stared at the bathroom mirror, but it only reflected the wall and my frightened face.  Oh dear lord, what if Bianca was pulled into the mirror with Bloody Mary?  Would we ever see her again?  What would I tell her parents?        “Try the door again,” Alex gasped, lunging forward to grab the knob.  It opened immediately.  Apparently, the door was released from the lock spell as soon as Bloody Mary disappeared.         We ran to the living room, hoping to find Bianca huddled in her sleeping bag.  She wasn’t there.  We searched all over the downstairs for her.   I was about ready to wake my parents and confess the whole stupid mess to them when Lacey gave a yell from the laundry room.  Bianca was lying unconscious beside the washing machine with blood and scratches all over her face.    The ghost had scratched a message deep into the flesh of her right forearm.  It said: “I AM REAL.”           My stomach lurched and I wanted to throw up when I saw Bloody Mary’s message.  Instead, I knelt down and shook my friend’s shoulder, trying to wake her up.  After nearly a minute of calling her name, Bianca finally opened her eyes.  She groaned and rolled to a sitting position.        “What happened to you?” I asked, dabbing at her cuts with a hand towel from the bathroom.         “After that…that horrible ghost knocked the four of you down, it grabbed me by the hair and pulled me through the mirror,” Bianca said with a shudder.  “I felt something scratching my face and hands, and I tried to fight back but I was knocked to the ground and dragged along a cold floor by my hair.  The ghost tossed me into a dark room.  I couldn’t see anything, but I felt the ghost clutched my arm and there was this terrible pain.  That’s all I remember until I heard your voices and the light came on.”        She saw the look on our faces and glanced down at her sore arm.  She went so white I thought she would faint again, so I pushed her head between her knees until the dizziness passed.        We cleaned up the blood on Sabrina and Alex and Bianca and then the five of us huddled in the living room for the rest of the night; too scared to sleep.  We made up some story in the morning for my parents about bumping into the furniture while playing a game to explain the scratches on my three friends.  No one showed them the message on Bianca’s arms.       We’ve had other sleepovers since that night, but my friends and I never tried the Bloody Mary ritual again.

These Notorious So-called 'Tourist Traps' Are Worth Visiting, According to Travelers

Travelers are speaking out to say these spots aren't half bad.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Ah, the traveler’s debacle: To follow the crowd to major, must-see sights knowing they’ll be met with overpriced services, entertainment, food, and souvenirs — or to avoid these sites completely and search out hidden gems void of other tourists. To some, visiting Paris without going up the Eiffel Tower isn’t seeing Paris , while to others, the complete opposite is true.

It’s a question — or way of traveling — that isn’t always black-and-white. Most of us want to see the major sites — preferably without giant tour groups and overpriced crêpe stands — and stumble upon authentic places that few others will get to experience. So when is it worth following the crowd to a site you really want to see, even though it’s probably a tourist trap?

One user on Reddit , u/MarathonMarathon, posed that question , noting that for them, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel in Shanghai was a tourist trap they ended up genuinely liking. “It's basically this short 5-minute tourist trap light show tram thing that takes you across the Huangpu River from the Bund to Pudong, with bizarre voice-overs. Sort of like some Disney attraction, but sadder, the very epitome of a kitsch tourist trap.”

The Reddit community responded, sharing the tourist-trap-inclined sites and tours that they genuinely liked and would recommend to others. Below are the “best” responses in order:

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour — Niagara Falls, U.S.

The 20-minute Maid of the Mist boat tour, which claims to be “the original Niagara Falls boat tour” — takes travelers to the foot of Niagara Falls where they can feel the power of 600,000 gallons of water crashing down and enjoy the resulting mist.

“You wait in line forever, the boat is packed, it seems cheesy ... and then you get up to the Falls and feel their power, you realize that the boat has the engine running at full power yet it struggles against the current and you realize that yeah, this is awesome,” said u/twoeightnine.

Original Sound of Music bus tour — Salzburg, Austria

The Original Sound of Music bus tour takes travelers through Salzburg, where "The Sound of Music" movie was filmed. The bus visits Mirabell Garden and Pegasus Fountain, where Maria and the children danced in the movie; Schloss Leopoldskron, the house, where the Trapp Family lived; and Church Mondsee, where Maria and Baron von Trapp got married, along with other sites.

User u/opuntialantana said the four-hour journey included, “Glorious views, drinks, snacks, and a Maria von Trapp lookalike leading us in singalongs as we drove from one filming location to the next. It was cheesy and it was perfect.”

Hobbiton Movie Set Tours — Matamata, New Zealand

At Hobbiton , visitors can walk through the lush pastures of the Shire and through the movie set used in "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" film trilogies. The part-bus, part-walking tour includes visits to the series’ most famous locations, including the Hobbit Hole where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins lived.

The 2.5-hour tour ends with a visit to the Green Dragon Inn , where a free drink concludes the tour of Middle-earth.

Guinness Storehouse — Dublin

The home of Ireland’s most iconic beer offers daily self-guided tours that include entry to the Guinness tasting rooms and a pint of Guinness. If you’re a true beer or Guinness connoisseur, you can opt for a “ premium experience ,” like a guided tasting with storytelling or a tour through the brewery’s historic sites — including their famous underground tunnels.

“When anyone came to visit [sic] me I always took them there; it never got old! It’s a well-curated museum and of course, the tap room is always fun to go to. Also, all my Irish friends were happy to go with me when I first moved there so it seems to be well-liked among people that live there too,” said u/tcpower2.

Hofbräuhaus München — Munich

Reddit user u/Triple10X said they initially went to Hofbräuhaus München “just to say that we've been there.” But after visiting several smaller German beer halls they felt that Hofbräuhaus was the best.

The three-floor beer hall has a Bavarian restaurant and ongoing shows that take place in a historic, 16th-century building. According to u/Triple10X, “The food we got was phenomenal, the beer was obviously good and the atmosphere was eclectic with multiple couples around us all talking to each other in different languages.”

What Is Guilt Tripping?

Frequently Asked Questions

A guilt trip means causing another person to feel guilt or a sense of responsibility to change their behavior or take a specific action. Because guilt can be such a powerful motivator of human behavior, people can wield it as a tool to change how others think, feel, and behave.

Sometimes this might involve leaning on something that someone already feels guilty about. In other cases, people might induce feelings of unjustified guilt or responsibility to manipulate the other person's emotions and behaviors.

If someone has ever made you feel bad about something you’ve done (or didn’t do) and then used those bad feelings to get you to do something for them, then you have experience with guilt tripping.

This article discusses the signs, types, and impact of guilt trips. It also covers some of the steps you can take to cope with this type of behavior.

Signs of a Guilt Trip

Guilt trips can be intentional, but they can also be unintentional. There are chances that you have even guilt-tripped people into doing things before.

Sometimes guilt tripping behavior can be easy to spot, but it can also be much more subtle and difficult to detect.  Some key signs that others may be guilt-tripping you include:

  • Making comments suggesting that you have not done as much work as they have done
  • Bringing up mistakes that you have made in the past
  • Reminding you of favors they have performed for you in the past
  • Acting as if they are angry but then denying that there is a problem
  • Refusing to speak to you or giving you the silent treatment
  • Making it clear through their body language , tone of voice, and facial expressions that they disapprove of what you were doing
  • Suggesting that you “owe” them
  • Engaging in passive-aggressive behavior
  • Making sarcastic comments about your efforts or progress

It is important to note that this type of indirect communication can occur in any interpersonal relationship. Still, it is more likely to take place in relationships that are marked by close emotional connections.

It can show up in romantic relationships, but guilt trips may also be utilized in family relationships, parental relationships, and even work relationships.

Types of Guilt Tripping

There are many different types of guilt trips that people may utilize depending on the ultimate goal or purpose of the behavior. Some of the different purposes of a guilt trip include:

  • Manipulation : Sometimes, the primary goal of a guilt trip is to manipulate someone into doing something that they normally would not want to do.
  • Conflict avoidance : In other cases, people may use guilt trips to avoid directly talking about an issue. It allows them to get what they want without having to engage in direct conflict.
  • Moral education : Guilt trips can also be a way of getting someone to engage in a behavior that the individual feels is more moral or “right.”
  • Elicit sympathy : In some cases, guilt-tripping allows the individual to gain the sympathy of others by casting themselves in the role of someone who has been harmed by the actions the other person is supposed to feel guilty about.

Guilt isn't always a bad thing. While often troubling and unpleasant, it can serve an important role in guiding moral behavior. When people experience guilt, they can fix their mistakes and avoid repeating the same errors in the future.

Researcher Courtney Humeny

A guilt trip does not appear to induce the benefits of guilt, such as making amends, honesty, and mutual understanding.

Impact of Guilt Trips

Invoking feelings of guilt to change someone’s behavior can have a wide variety of effects. Whether guilt is wielded intentionally or not, it prevents healthy communication and connections with others. Some of the most immediate effects of this form of covert psychological manipulation include:

Damage to Relationships

Research suggests that guilt trips can take a toll on close relationships. One study found that people hurt by their partner's criticism were more likely to use those hurt feelings to make their partner feel guilty and offer reassurances.

However, the study also found that the partner who had been guilt-tripped into offering assurances was more likely to feel significantly worse about the relationship.

In other words, inducing feelings of guilt may work to get your partner to do what you want—but it comes at a cost. It can impair trust and cause the other person to feel that they are being manipulated.

One of the reasons why guilt trips can poison relationships is because they can lead to lasting feelings of resentment.

"A guilt trip imposes aversive states associated with guilt, along with feelings of resentment from feeling manipulated," Humeny suggests.

A single occasion of someone using a guilt trip to alter your behavior might not have a serious impact on your relationship. Repeated use of guilt trips can leave you feeling bitter.

If you feel that your partner is always going to guilt you into something that you don't want to do, it can decrease intimacy, reduce emotional closeness, and ultimately make you start to resent your partner.

Research suggests that appeals to guilt are a common type of persuasion technique . However, while guilt can compel people to take certain actions, it can also sometimes backfire.

Low-level guilt tends to motivate people to act on the persuasive message. High levels of guilt, however, often fail due to what researchers call "reactance."

"An individual in a state of reactance will behave in such a way as to restore his freedom (or, at least, his sense of freedom), for example, by performing behaviors that are contrary to those required," explain researchers Aurélien Graton and Melody Mailliez in a 2019 article published in the journal Behavioral Sciences .

In other words, guilt trips can backfire and lead people to behave opposite how someone else wants them to act. For example, someone guilt-tripping you into calling them more often might actually result in calling them less.

Poor Well-being

Feelings of excessive guilt are associated with several mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression , and obsessive-compulsive disorder . Being subjected to guilt trips may contribute to the development or worsening of such conditions.

Experiencing guilt can also lead to many immediate and unpleasant emotions and symptoms such as anxiety, sadness, regret, worry, muscle tension, and insomnia.

This type of covert manipulation may also sometimes contribute to the development of a guilt complex , which is a persistent belief that you have done (or will do) something wrong.

Over time, guilt can lead to feelings of shame. Shame can affect your self-image, which can then contribute to social withdrawal and isolation.

How to Cope With Guilt Tripping

There are a number of tactics that can be helpful when dealing with a guilt trip. Some steps you can take include:

  • Acknowledge the request. Let them know that you understand that it is important to them. Responding with empathy and showing that you see their needs may help them feel that they are not simply being ignored. Validating their emotions may help lessen the intensity of those feelings.
  • Share your feelings . Explain that you also see how they are trying to make you feel guilty so that you'll do what they want. Then tell them how that type of manipulation makes you feel. Suggest that interacting in that way will lead to resentment and that more direct communication forms would be more effective.
  • Set boundaries . Boundaries help set limits on what you will and will not accept. Even if you do end up helping them with their request, make sure you clearly articulate your limits and explain the consequences of crossing those boundaries. Then be sure that you enforce those limits if they are crossed.

Other things that you can use include protecting your self-esteem and distancing yourself if needed. You're more likely to fall for a guilt trip if you already feel poorly about yourself, so find strategies to build up your sense of self-worth.

If the other person keeps trying to manipulate you with feelings of guilt, reduce your communication with them or even consider ending the relationship.

Protecting your own well-being should be a top priority. A person who tries to manipulate you with toxic feelings of shame and guilt does not have your best interests at heart.

Getting Help for Guilt

If you are experiencing feelings of guilt or related symptoms of anxiety, stress, or depression, talk to your health care provider or a mental health professional. They can recommend treatment options such as psychotherapy or medications that can help manage symptoms and improve the quality of your life.

Your doctor or therapist may suggest a type of therapy called cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) , which may help reduce inappropriate guilt feelings. This type of therapy can help you identify and change the negative thoughts and cognitive distortions that can contribute to feelings of guilt.

Your therapist can also help you learn to recognize the signs of a guilt trip—and help you practice strategies to cope with this type of emotional manipulation.

An example of guilt tripping might be your friend calling you and saying, "I know you are too busy with work to hang out. I'll just spend the evening by myself. I just thought that since I helped you get that job you would make sure to make a little more time for me." This type of comment is designed to induce feelings of guilt and bring up the idea that you "owe" them in some way.

Guilt tripping is often designed to manipulate other people by preying on their emotions and feelings of guilt or responsibility. This can be a form of toxic behavior that can have detrimental effects on a person's well-being as well as their relationships.

While both behaviors are destructive and toxic, they differ in key ways. Gaslighting is a type of emotional abuse that involves denying another person's reality and making them question their own experiences. Guilt tripping, on the other hand, is about causing another person to feel guilty in order to get them to change their behavior.

  • The Best Exercises

Traps may be the new abs to strength athletes — at least in the sense that they’re hard to obtain and signal to the world that you take your fitness goals seriously. Just like you can’t get abs without following a strict and calculated diet, big traps require years of heavy lifting, smart recovery, and targeted programming.

A bodybuilder's shirtless back.

Exercise selection also plays an important role. There are more ways to build a set of steel traps than just barbell shrugs , and we’re going to show you how. On the list below, we outline 13 of the best exercises for the traps, along with a deep dive into the benefits of trap training, and the best trap workouts you can perform .

  • Cable Shrug
  • Dumbbell Shrug
  • Overhead Barbell Carry
  • Farmer’s Carry
  • Dumbbell Row
  • Trap Bar Deadlift
  • Dumbbell Prone Y-Raise
  • EZ-Bar Upright Row
  • Rope Pull Apart
  • Dumbbell Lateral Raise

1. Trap Bar Shrug

Trap bar shrugs are a great way to overload the traps because you can use heavy loads safely. The trap bar has you assume a grip that helps minimize the stress on the anterior shoulder, elbows, and wrists.

[Read More: The Best Shoulder Exercises for Building Muscle ]

The trap bar shrug can also be programmed for strength, muscle hypertrophy , or power development, making it a versatile training tool.

How To Do It

  • Perform a standard deadlift with the trap bar to begin the exercise from a standing position.
  • Once motionless, shrug the shoulders up and towards the ears.
  • Once at the top, lower under control.

Coach’s Tip : Focus on elevating your shoulders without rounding them forward.

Sets and Reps : Shrug for 3 sets of 12 reps.

2. Cable Shrug

The cable shrug is an excellent exercise to target the traps, rear delts, and upper back. The cable stack allows for precise loading, which is beneficial for higher rep sets and methods such as drop sets , tempo, and pauses.

[Read More: The Best Back Workouts ]

Unlike some of the other exercises on this list, the cable’s constant tension ensures that you fully fatigue the traps throughout their entire range of motion.

  • Stand in front of a cable machine and grab the rope attachment with both hands and feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Keep your shoulders down, chest up, and hold the rope with arms extended.
  • Without using your arms, exhale and bring your shoulders towards your ears and then pull back slightly.
  • Pause and slowly return to the starting position.

Coach’s Tip : Cables provide constant mechanical tension to your traps. Take your reps slowly and feel that tension from start to finish.

Sets and Reps : Perform 2 sets of 12 to 15 reps.

3. Dumbbell Shrug

The dumbbell shrug allows for unilateral strength training and helps to iron out potential imbalances. While it is more difficult to load up serious weight with the dumbbell shrug, you can use methods to increase tension such as performing drop sets, lifting with tempo , or adding pauses.

Plus, unlike the trap bar or barbell , dumbbells are particularly effective at improving grip strength .

  • Grab a pair of dumbbells and stand tall with your shoulders depressed and chest up.
  • Raise your upper traps towards your ears as high as you can.
  • Pause for a second and slowly lower your shoulders down to the hang position. Reset and repeat for reps.

Coach’s Tip : Avoid bending your elbows as you shrug.

Sets and Reps : Try 2 or 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps here.

4. Kirk Shrug

Kirk Karwoski started doing this shrug variation to increase grip strength for the deadlift . His coach, Marty Gallagher, thought this exercise would help him pull heavier — and Marty was right.

[Read More: The Single-Leg Deadlift Is the Best Pulling Accessory You’re Not Doing ]

Kirk pulled an 800-pound deadlift with the help of the Kirk Shrug . But they also discovered they built a bigger yoke too. By using a thumbless grip and a pause, this lift puts incredible tension on your upper traps.

  • Assume a thumbless grip on the barbell and perform a standard shrug from a standing position.
  • As you shrug, bend the elbows as you shrug as if you were doing the first half of an upright row .
  • Hold the barbell at the top of the movement if possible before lowering the weight to the starting position.

Coach’s Tip : The barbell should come up to about belly button height.

Sets and Reps : Perform 3 sets of 15 reps here.

5. Barbell Overhead Carry

There are many variations of the overhead carry , but the standard-grip version allows for the heaviest load — and thus the highest stimulation.

This exercise seriously challenges your upper traps, shoulders, core, and triceps isometrically, while also being a great accessory move to improve your overhead presses and Olympic lifts.

  • Set a bar at chest height in a power rack and unrack it.
  • Perform a press, push press, or jerk to secure the barbell overhead.
  • While keeping the barbell fixed above your head with locked arms, take small and controlled steps for distance or time.

Coach’s Tip : Fix your gaze on a point in front of you as you walk.

Sets and Reps : Try 2 or 3 rounds of 20 paces.

6. Farmer’s Carry

The farmer’s carry is a loaded carry workout variation that can benefit muscles across the upper body and lower body all at once. The traps play a vital role in stabilizing the scapula as it is the main muscle producing tension and stability in the upper back during any form of carry.

The farmer’s carry also helps with core strength and postural control, making it highly transferable to everyday life.

  • With a dumbbell in each hand — consider using lifting straps if you aren’t concerned with grip strength — take steady, controlled steps in a straight line.
  • Walk with an upright posture and don’t allow your body to list to one side or meander off your intended line.

Coach’s Tip : Let the shoulders hang away from the ears.

Sets and Reps : Try 2 rounds of 20 paces.

7. Dumbbell Row

Alongside the muscles of the arm, the one-arm dumbbell row challenges the traps in their role of scapular retraction (bringing the shoulder blades closer together).

This exercise packs a host of benefits, including the added need for stability compared to its barbell counterpart alongside its ability to focus on one side of the body at a time, enabling you to shore up weaknesses.

  • Place the knee opposite the arm you’re rowing with onto a weight bench , plyo box , or another stable surface.
  • Place the non-working arm down to support your torso.
  • Pick up the dumbbell with a neutral grip (palms facing toward the body) and row it up, leading with your elbow.
  • Pull the weight in a controlled manner without leaning your body to either side. Repeat on the opposite side.

Coach’s Tip : Make sure your back is straight and allow the free leg to extend behind you or to the side.

Sets and Reps : Bang out 3 or 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps.

8. Trap Bar Deadlift

The trap bar deadlift variation is one of the most underrated exercises around. It allows you to hold the load more in line with your body and with a neutral grip — which helps keep the torso more upright and allows for more weight to be loaded on the bar.

[Read More: Romanian Deadlift Vs. Deadlift — Which is Better for Your Program? ]

Although you are not actively shortening and lengthening your traps, they are still receiving a massive isometric stimulus as they stabilize the shoulder girdle while your lower body works.

  • While standing in the middle of the bar, squat down and grasp the handles.
  • Brace your torso from top to bottom, and then lift the weight by driving your feet through the floor.
  • Push until you come to a standing position with your knees locked out and your arms hanging down by your side.

Coach’s Tip : The action of the trap bar deadlift should feel more like a partial squat than a regular hinge.

Sets and Reps : Do 3 or 4 sets of 6 to 10 reps.

9. Rack Pull

The rack pull is a staple among strength and physique athletes alike. Sometimes controversial, this variation targets your upper and mid-back, alongside the lower body, and allows you to load up the bar with a truly insane amount of weight.

As with other deadlift variations, the intent of this exercise is to isometrically challenge the traps — an area in which the rack pull is king.

  • While standing in a power rack , set the safety bars to around knee height.
  • With your core tight and spine neutral, hinge at the hip , grab the bar, and then pull the barbell to lockout.
  • Slowly lower the weight to the starting position, resisting the pull of the weight on the way down.

Coach’s Tip : The rack pull should be performed with weights that are heavier than what you’d normally deadlift.

Sets and Reps : Go heavy and perform 3 to 5 sets of 5 to 8 reps.

10. Dumbbell Prone Y-Raise

The lower aspect of the trapezius has a key role in stabilizing the scapula. Its main function is to depress the shoulder blades and aid in upward rotation. The prone y-raise allows you to load the lower traps, contributing to gains in strength, size, and function.

Exercises that target the lower traps are of particular value if you feel you have poor posture, as this portion of the muscle tends to go under-stimulated by traditional shrugging exercises. Balancing out your trap work is key for both posture and performance.

  • Set an adjustable bench to roughly a 45 degree angle — the steeper the inclination, the more difficult each repetition will be.
  • Slowly raise a pair of dumbbells out in front of your body such that, if viewed from overhead, your body would make a “Y” shape.

Coach’s Tip : The Y raise requires very light weights to be effective — newer trainees may not need any weight at all if they’re just getting started at the gym.

Sets and Reps : Take it slow and do 2 to 3 sets of up to 20 reps.

11. EZ-Bar Upright Row

This free-weight row variation trains the upper traps and muscles of the shoulder in their function of scapular elevation, upward rotation, and shoulder abduction. The upright row can be used by bodybuilders to build more size to the upper back and neck, and strength athletes can use this exercise to build shoulder strength and reinforce their technique in Olympic movements.

[Read More: Use the Bent-Over Row to Make Big Gains With Big Weights ]

The EZ-bar, or cambered bar, will likely reduce stress on the wrists and elbows, making the move more comfortable.

  • Place your hands on the bar slightly outside shoulder-width.
  • With the body locked in place, raise the bar upwards as you elevate the shoulders, briefly pausing at the top of the row to flex the upper traps.
  • Lower the weight under control.

Coach’s Tip : Unwrap your thumbs from the bar if you have any wrist discomfort during the movement.

Sets and Reps : Do 1 or 2 sets of 12 to 15 reps.

12. Rope Pull-Apart

The pull-apart yields many benefits, including added strength and muscle to your mid-back, more functional and resilient shoulders, and increased postural control.

The rope attachment allows for a more individualized arm path, enabling the lifter to best match their preferred arm path as they pull the weight.

  • Grasp the rope with an overhand grip. Your stance should be staggered with a slight backward lean in your torso.
  • From there, pull the rope towards your clavicles by driving your elbows out and back.
  • Control the weight as you return to the starting position.

Coach’s Tip : This movement is similar to the face pull , but should allow you to lift much heavier weights.

Sets and Reps : Go for 3 or 4 sets of 15 reps.

13. Dumbbell Lateral Raise

It may be odd to see a well-known shoulder-builder on a list of trap exercises, but rest assured — the lateral raise can get the job done. Often touted to be a result of bad technique, tension in your upper traps during the lateral raise is actually a good thing if you’re trying to get yoked.

[Read More: What Are Workout Splits? Top 3 Most Effective Routines ]

The upper division of the trap has a role in opposing the force that the medial delt exhibits on the scapula. This makes the lateral raise great for challenging both of these muscles in one movement.

  • Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand and arms at your sides, palms facing in.
  • Position your feet roughly shoulder-width apart.
  • Raise your arms and lift the dumbbells up and out to each side, stopping when your elbows reach around shoulder-height.
  • Pause and hold for a second at the top of the movement.

Coach’s Tip : For added trap engagement, continue lifting your arms above your shoulders.

Sets and Reps : Try 2 or 3 sets of 15 to 20 reps.

3 Trap Workouts To Incorporate

Even if you’re not trying to build bigger traps, strong trap muscles support a more balanced posture and better performance on the best barbell exercises . But how should you start, and how do you progress from there? To take the guesswork out of the equation, here is the best trap workout for every experience level.

Best Trap Workout: Beginner

A beginner trap workout can be as simple as executing a solidly written back day. But to maximize growth, make sure you’re integrating full scapular (shoulder blade) movement.

Choose exercises that directly address your traps. Exercises that utilize an overhand or neutral grip and emphasize a hard squeeze of your shoulder blades will be extremely valuable here.

  • Face Pull : 3 x 15
  • Chest-Supported T-Bar Row : 3 x 10
  • Cable Y-Raise : 2 x 12

Best Trap Workout: Intermediate

The classic deadlift or any number of deadlift variations can serve as the centerpiece of your intermediate trap workout. Not only will it help to strengthen and beef up your upper back, but this overall strength will help drive your entire program forward for continued gains.

After the deadlift, aim for higher repetition isolation work and even some shrugs to cap your day (and your traps).

  • Conventional Deadlift : 3 x 5
  • Low-to-High Machine Row : 3 x 12
  • Chest-Supported Dumbbell Shrug : 3 x 10-12

Best Trap Workout: Advanced

Start with the most explosive strength and power exercises here to leverage how fresh you are. These movements can require high degrees of coordination, so they’re best performed just after your warm-up, before moving on to the smaller bits and pieces.

Finish a heavy bilateral farmer’s carry for the secret weapon to enormous traps and you’ll be all set.

  • Clean High Pull : 3 x 3
  • Rack Pull : 2 x 5
  • Cable Shrug : 3 x 12
  • Bilateral Dumbbell Farmer’s Carry : 3 x 50 feet

Anatomy of the Traps

Your trapezius is a large muscle, with most of it not visible to the naked eye. Understanding what it is and how it works is important in obtaining a stronger and bigger yoke. If your traps are weak, tight, or inhibited, you may experience poor overhead mobility.

This could force compensation from other muscles, which in turn will negatively affect performance in the gym. Keeping the upper back strong and mobile plays a vital role in the performance of your squats, deadlifts, and bench press , helping your shoulders stay pain-free.

Trap muscles

[Read More: The Best Online Workout Programs For Coaching, Cardio, Value, And More ]

The trapezius is a large, flat, superficial muscle that sits on both sides of the upper back. It originates from the cervical spine and all 12 of the thoracic vertebrae. Although it is one muscle, it’s usually referred to in three parts — the upper, middle, and lower traps.

The traps main functions include:

  • Scapular retraction  (pinching the shoulder blades together)
  • Scapular elevation and depression  (lifting and dropping the shoulder)
  • Scapular outward rotation  (lifting the arm out to the sides of the body)

Your traps play a huge role in shoulder function and health both in and out of the gym. To leave them untrained means giving up a lot of performance in both strength sports and daily tasks involving the arm and shoulder.

The Benefits of Training Your Traps

Although the traps are not directly trained with the squats and deadlifts , they play an indirect role in “setting the table” for these lifts. Contraction of the trap muscles plays a role in keeping a neutral spine while other joints move in space.

Strong traps also help you keep the bar close when pulling on a heavy deadlift , which can help prevent injuries and ensure you keep setting personal records during your training.

Improved Posture

In today’s technology-driven world, where sitting and looking down at screens makes up most of our time, stronger traps may help prevent negative impacts on posture. What’s more, research suggests having a strong and muscular neck can help reduce the chance of getting and the severity of a concussion. (1) If you’re an athlete in a high-impact sport, such as football or mixed martial arts, a strong upper back can keep you off the bench and on the field.

Improved Pulling Strength

The traps are a key muscle group of the upper body, and they assist in pulling strength and shoulder stability for exercises like heavy carries, deadlifts, and the Olympic lifts. Both high level weightlifters and proficient powerlifters are known for having traps that touch their ears.

Trap Warm-Up

Before training your traps, it’s important to get the blood pumping and then mobilize them with a few low-intensity exercises to get your traps ready for action. You’ll want to first foam roll your upper back to get blood flow to the area and ensure it’s warmed up.

Once you’ve completed a general warm-up and some mobility workouts , some low-intensity primers like face pulls, pull-aparts, or wall slides for moderate to high reps with light weight will have you in fighting shape.

Putting It All Together

Big traps are one of the best ways to signal to the world that you’re no slouch in the gym. Beyond making you look better in a t-shirt, developed traps come into play on nearly every upper-body exercise in one form or another.

From being the prime movers in all shrugs and most types of high pulls, to assisting the lats in nearly every type of row, to holding the shoulder in place during your favorite overhead press, the traps are the power player of the upper back.

Customer reviews.

Excellent product and great customer service. The alarm works as it should quality built product.

Placed in the correct location, this is superior

Don't settle for cheap knock-offs, Fith Ops has the products that work

you can find these for half the price on ebay. Not sure if these are even manufactured by fith ops or if they are just adding their name to what appears a common product with many different brand names attached to it. However, it works for its intended purpose.

Hello Richard,

Thanks for the review. Yes, people bring up price a lot these days as they see cheaper ones on the internet. The thing is, the ones you see that are half price are not the same quality as the ones we make, nor are they USA made (which drives the price up about $5). It's important for the spring to be strong and to last a long time, and the chamber must be percise so the pin strikes the primer just right every time. The super cheap ones you see are not designed to such quality. They don't always work, and the worst ones use our pictures to sell you the cheaper knockoff.

There is one black-colored kockoff going around normally for $30. That one is acutally pretty good. It's not USA made, and the spring still isn't as good as the one we use, but it will work. Probably won't last as long as the ones we make though.

I should also note we have not raised the price in quite a long time. The product gets more expensive to manfacure due to inflation but we are holding strong at the $35 price point.

Hope this clears things up!

not sure how to try it out, maybe july 4th, but it does 'snap' when i pull the pin.

Mississippi State Extension

Trigger Mechanisms

Root sticks.

Root Stick with Bait

Setting It Up

The root stick consists of two sections of rebar (reinforcing bar) or two sticks called set stakes driven into the ground at a 45-degree to 60-degree angle (with the ends pointing away from the trap door). A length of rope or cord is attached at one end to the drop door and at the other end to the middle of a strong stick or piece of scrap lumber, called the root stick.

How It Works

The door is held open by wedging the root stick behind the set stakes. Bait is placed around and on top of the root stick, and the trap is sprung when feeding and rooting pigs push the root stick out from behind the set stakes. Note: The root stick trigger is dependent upon gravity and is best suited for use with a sliding drop door.

Corral Trap Trip Wire

The trip wire is a line or wire strung across one corner or the rear section of the trap, run around one side of the trap, and attached to a triggering device (pin, hook, or prop stick) on the trap door.

When stringing the trip wire from the trap door to the rear section of the trap (the point at which it will change direction and cross the width of the trap), position the line or wire high enough so that the backs and heads of adult pigs will not disturb it and spring the trap too soon.

Once sufficient pressure is exerted on the line or wire, the trigger device releases the door and the trap is sprung. The amount of pressure required to spring the trap can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the trip wire.

When using a multicatch trap door, a trip wire works best. The action needed to pull the prop from the saloon-style door or to release the door panels on the root door work much more smoothly and reliably with the trip wire. Note: Trip wires used with saloon-style doors and root doors should be one continuous length.

Trip Wire Placement

To reduce incidents of the trap being sprung early by nontarget species, such as raccoons and opossums, suspend the trip wire across the rear section of the trap 16 inches to 20 inches above the ground. Suspending the trip wire at this height will also help reduce the chances of younger and smaller pigs springing the trap too soon.

Root Sticks vs. Trip Wires

Both the root stick and trip wire are proven triggering mechanisms for trapping wild pigs. However, because of their varying levels of trigger sensitivity there are times when it may be more tactful to use one versus the other. Whereas trip wires are more sensitive to disturbance, root sticks are less so and require more effort on the part of pigs and nontarget species to spring the trap. If pigs seem to be purposefully avoiding the root stick trigger or soils are too loose or too compacted to use a root stick, then a trip wire is the better option. See the figures below for converting a root stick to a trip wire.
